Hi_Rob,
I recently took my family to Singapore for vacation and was able to take this picture of the Marina Bay Sands hotel. I took this picture with my iPad mini, removed the color with the PopAGraph app then added the "ii" with the app Over.

Apple - Press Info - FY 13 Second Quarter Results Conference Call
We will get to Apples quarterly conference call at the end of today's episode. I actually recorded most of today's episode
Monday night - and then will finish up the episode right after I listen to today's quarterly conference call. So there will be some speculation in this episode recorded before the call - and by the end of the episode we will see how good or bad said speculation was. Also a little clarification from ep 264 at the 57:20 mark - I said get a little ahead - as in ahead on my emails. I did not say what some of you thought I said - but I will say my wife thought I said it as well when I played it for her. And now into the news.
Apple says small number of Apple TVs have WiFi issues, opens replacement program | 9to5Mac
This first item was supposed to be on the last episode - but I assigned it to the wrong episode in my notes on evernote. Sorry about that. This is with regards to Apple TV 3rd gen - and Apple replacing units that have wifi connectivity issues. So if you have an Apple TV 3rd gen unit and it is having issues connecting and staying connected to your wifi network - look for the link in the show notes titled Apple TVs have wifi issues - and see if your serial number is covered as one Apple will replace - and then take it to your local Apple store and get a replacement. And please let me know afterwards how your experience went.
March Tablet Update: iPad Usage Share Rises for First Time Since December, Now at 81.9% | Chitika Online Advertising Network
Chitika reported that iPad usage share for US and Candian traffic went up in March to 81.9% of all traffic - what is interesting this was the first monthly rise since December. Thoughts on this - well In December - lots of people were given / purchased non-iPad tablets. And they started using them in December and by March - well they discovered using them not as compelling as those with iPads - and that is why iPad traffic grew in March vs Jan and Feb - when people were still in a honeymoon phase with non iPad tablets. If this theory is correct - we should expect another rise in market share for April. Try to remember this one for next months report from Chitika. Chitika speculate the rise might be due to Apple offering refurbished units for sale on line - I am not buying that logic. Again I just think it is about Android users not having as good an experience with their devices as iPad users. But in any case - iPad usage at 81.9% of US and Canadian traffic does re-enforce that iPad users like using their iPads.
Thanks to Ed for the heads up on this next one. Which is more iOS vs Android data - this one is with regards to Ad traffic for mobile platforms. This being global ads across Oprea Mediaworks ad subsidiaries - AdMarvel, Mobile Theory and 4th screen with combined serve over 50 billion ad impressions each month. What they see is iOS in first place with 44.53% of all ad served. Android in 2nd with 31.26%, Other at 14.29%, Symbian at 5.6% and Rim at 4.23%. And when you looked at a % of revenue generated - iOS was even more dominate at 49.23% vs Android at 26.7%, other at 15.39%, Rim at 6.19% and Symbian at 2.46%. Per iOS break down - the iPhone was most dominate followed by the iPad and then the iPod touch. Traffic wise the iPhone was about a 5 to 1 ratio vs the iPad. On the Android side the phones were a 30 to 1 ratio vs the tablets. Boy going over all these numbers kind of makes you wish you had something from the folks at Durex - but hey we will get to that later in the show.
First off in the email bag we have the following:
Hi Rob,
I believe Ryan in Episode 0264 asked for a Music App with a Sleep Timer, not sure if this helps, but if he's happy to still use the Stock Music App then he could also use the Stock Clock App to turn off the music. Here's how too do it:
1. Open up the Clock App
2. Select Timer
3. Decided how long you want the Music to play for
4. Select the option 'When Timer Ends'
5. Scroll all the way to the bottom and
Select 'Stop Playing'
6. Hit the 'Start' Button.
It doesn't matter if you start your music playing before or after you've performed the above step, and as I'm sure you've guessed, when the timer runs out the music will stop playing.
Hope that helps, keep up the good work and always look forward to listening too your Podcasts.
Kind regards
Mark T. of Quarry Bank, England.
Thanks Mark and also thanks goes out to Jose, Darrin, Robert, Shannon, Bernard, Heather, Mitchell, Chelsea and a few others who also sent in the same reply on this one. Guess it is one of those tips I should have known, See even after 6 years of doing this show I am still learning new things. Staying on this subject.
Hello Rob,
One of my favorite apps is iHome+Sleep. Along with being able to set multiple alarms to wake you up with the music of your choice, you can also fall asleep to music. I first started using this app for the alarm feature but quickly fell in love with the app's sleep tracking function. When you want to go to sleep, you simply slide to sleep. When you are ready to wake up, you slide to awake. Under the Stats tab, you are able to see daily, weekly, and monthy sleep times, wake times, hours of sleep, and snooze cycles. If you need to adjust your times, you can do that too. I hope this helps!
Stacy
Rob,
A caller ask for an music app that allows you
to set a timer to have the music stop playing
after a duration (sleep timer).
With this iPhone app, you can enjoy Music with Lyrics, watch Music Videos and study using Special Mode and use an sleeper timer.
It works pretty good. When it gets to the time, it gradually lowers the volume and stop the music instead of abruptly ending the music.

Hi Rob,
For the gentleman who wanted to be able to keep track of his and his wife's daily spending, you could use a simple spreadsheet with built in formulas so that the balance updated after every entry and store it in Dropbox for easy access from both parties. This would eliminate the need to use the same iTunes account

Hi Rob,
I’m emailing you in regards to your listener Shannon who was asking about an app that could sync expenses between he and his wife. I’ve tried several apps and have spent quite a bit of money on different apps hoping to find this type of expense tracking app for my wife and I. I finally found an app called EEBA. It’s an envelope budgeting app that can be used to create individual budgets for your monthly expenses. However I’ve found that by not creating a budget but rather just creating an envelope that’s labeled ‘checking account’, my wife and I are able to put in our daily expenses and deduct from that envelope-our checking account and it immediately syncs both of our phones. It’s completely free and I’ve found it to be extremely useful. Hope this information is useful.
Thanks for the great show!

WORST NEWS POST TITLE EVER - From CNN.com - quote Verizon iPhone sales tumble 33% unquote. Wow - how totally deceitful and full of link bait. CNN clearly is having issues when resorting to titles like that. Yes - quarter over quarter the number of iPhones sold at Verizon dropped - of course they did - the previous quarter was the first full quarter of the iPhone 5 and the Christmas quarter. Better to look year over year - and in that case the iphone sales at Verizon were up 25% - that is up 25% from last year - that is the news - not that iPhone sales dropped from Q4 2012 to Q1 2013 - of course they did. Also news - iPhones represented over 55% of the smartphones sold last quarter at Verizon - so Yes - All Android phones, Windows Phones, and Blackberry Phones combined were still not even close to the iPhones sold last quarter. For the record there were 4 Mil iPhones sold last quarter at Verizon. Interesting according to Verizon only about half of those were LTE - so per people saying Apple needs a low cost iphone - seems consumers already found it - as in the iPhone 4 and 4S. Well at least in the US where there are subsidies.
As Straight Talk starts selling the iPhone, TracFone sees jump in subscribers, revenue — Tech News and Analysis
One thing I think not be factored into iPhone sales growth is the low cost carriers in the US. When I said on the last episode I thought there would be about 40 Mil iPhones sold last quarter - I figured some of that growth would be coming from lower cost carriers that have the iPhone - like Straight Talk - and Straight talk is reporting some good numbers as far as subscriber growth goes. Guess the question is how much of that growth is via new iPhone sales vs those people picked up on the used market. Plus looking at Verizon's numbers - there was a 25% gain year over year. And last year in the first quarter Apple sold 35.1 Mil iPhones - if that 25% gain was indicative of all carriers for Apple - then Apple should blow away 40 Mil iPhones sold and be closer to 44 Mil iPhones sold. We will talk about this at the end of the show with the actual sales.
0026 - Slowdown in Apple orders weighs on LG Display's first-quarter profit | Reuters
Ok one more data point that might not bode well for my projections - this one from LG Displays - and they did their quarterly report on Monday and reported drop in production orders last quarter. Now Apple is about 30% of their business - and it is very possible that the drop in orders was from their other customers. So on one side we have Verizon and Straight talk showing good numbers - on the other side we have vendors showing not so good numbers. Will be an interesting end of the show today.
Apple's iWatch hits the big time: Changewave claims iPad level demand | Computerworld Blogs
Changewave did a survey to measure the interest with consumers of an iWatch - and what they found is that 19% are interested in this device Actually 5% are very likely to buy said device and 14% are somewhat likely to buy said device. While 19% might not sound high - and some blog posts are titled over 81% are not interested in an iWatch. Which is link bait at best. But 19% of likely or very likely buyers for an unannounced product is actually 1% higher than the 18% of buyers interested in an iPad in Jan 2010 before it was announced. So based on that comparison - said iWatch if it was a real product would probably do pretty well. I know I am very likely to buy said product and I would guess so are most of you listening. Ofcourse there are a few things that could change that 19% - like Price - Specs - and oh yeah - the product actually existing. Which so far is well more than a minor detail.
Lower-Cost iPhone's Plastic Rear Shell Reportedly Surfaces - Mac Rumors
On the has not been announced but highly speculated front is the lower cost iPhone rumor - and now there are some pictures of what is supposed to be the back casing of said lower cost iPhone - and if true shows it to be a plastic back - i.e. iPhone 3G and 3GS. Of course it could just be a plastic case for an iPhone 4 / 4S or 5 - since there are no dimensions given.
New app helps Icelanders avoid accidental incest
Thanks to Mark for this next one which will be of interest to our listeners in Iceland - especially the single listeners. The app is called islendiga App - and it is there to help icelanders avoid accidental incest. You bump your iPhone with the person you are looking to hook up with and it emits a warning alarm if they are closely related. I guess according to the article this is something that is a problem in Iceland. Where you go to a family party only to see someone you recently hooked up with. Or so says the article from USA Today. Now I was going to do a West Virginia Joke or an Arkansas joke - but actually in W. Virginia and Arkansas it is against the law to mary your first cousin - but you know where it is not against the law - NY and CT - yeah - so just remember that folk in the NY area before making fun of People in W. Vir or Arkansas. Just Sayin.
0039 - MALWARE DESIGNED FOR ANDROID-BASED SMART PHONES<br><i>Has been downloaded about 9 million times</i> | FEATURE NEWS | Sky Valley Chronicle Washington State News
Thanks to John in Gilbert AZ for this next one. Which is another Android Malware story - this time about apps with malware that may have been downloaded up about 9 million times - but not from un-official Android app stores - but rather from the Google Play app store. Seems Google's idea of a walled garden - forgot that whole walled part. Ouch. Sucks to be an Android user.
Hi Rob,
Love the show. I'm always learning stuff and I love hearing about new products and apps.
Here's a little trick you might like. You don't need to jailbreak and you don't even have to have Siri. You can actually use Siri's voice for your ringtone. For example, when your mother calls, you can have Siri say: "WARNING...Your mother is calling. Would you like me to send it to your voicemail or ignore it?"
Or when you get a new voicemail... "You're so lazy. Because you wouldn't get up off your butt you now have a new voicemail!"
I've attached a couple samples.
PLAY VOICEMAIL - TIP_BRANDON_MOTHER
Here's how.
1. You need 2 iOS devices. They don't need to have Siri.
2. On device #1, make sure you have "speak selection" on. You can find this under settings>general>accessibility. You will want to adjust the speed too.
3. On the same device go to the notes app and type what you would like Siri to say.
4. On device #2 download create ringtones! From the App Store.
5. Follow the instructions on how to record your own ringtone.
6. On device #1 select the text and tap on "speak" at the same time as you tap "record" on device #2.
7. Follow the instructions in the ringtones app on how to sync the ringtone back to your device through iTunes.
8. Assign it to your mothers contact in the contacts app. Or your regular ringtone or alert tone under settings>sounds.
DONE!!
If you want to make the recording better quality you could use a device like the iRig between the devices. I haven't tried it yet but it should work in theory.

Durex to launch vibrating underwear controlled by iPhone app - NY Daily News
Durex the condom people - are launching I kid you not - vibrating underwear for him and her - that are controlled by an iOS App - so now when you are away from the one you love you can set up a Skype call and literally reach out and touch them. Yes by touching on the iOS app - it causes the other persons underwear to vibrate. Our I guess you could touch the iOS app and have it vibrate your own under ware - you may ask why you would need an app to do that - well you could launch the app while in a conference meeting and turn a boring meeting about last quarter results into a more stimulating meeting. Sure beats biting the inside of your cheek to stay awake - just sayin.

I really don't like the new podcast app. I have several stories I listen to that several episodes were uploaded on one day. Instead of playing episode # 1, 2, 3..., the podcast app plays 3 2 then 1. I can not control the order they are played even in a play list. Urg
You advised me to uncheck "use cellular data" to keep from using all my data downloading unwanted podcast and I am sure glad I did that. It automatically downloads when I am home on my wifi.

Hi Rob,
I tried the podcast app only once and will not waste my time on it anymore. This is a major misstep for Apple along with Maps. The market may not be kind of more missteps. Samsung is biting at the heels but I'm committed to apples "closed" system where "we" are the customers and not the bait for advertisers.
I use stitcher and icatcher. I know you said the podcast app had a provision now similar to stitcher and that's good.
Stitcher now has a download and save option but I stream stitcher and use icatcher for downloads.
It looks like Facebook is trying discreetly to move in on googles advertising revenue with Facebook home. I expect google to do something.
I left Facebook. Didn't need the partyline. A good target to be hacked with all the membership was a big factor. I was spending too much time there.
All the best. And let's hope that the summer will be a boring news time for the USA. I am about 40mi from the explosion in West,Tx of the fertilizer plant. Our thin windows rattled and the bedroom door rattled. It was hard to believe but we thought it was thunder we didn't hear at the time.

Hi Rob,
A listener asked about the best app to stream podcasts. The app that immediately come to mind, because I use it daily and was actually using it to listen to the Today in iOS podcast from which the caller asked the question. I am heavy podcast listener; however, I have not downloaded a podcast in a while. Since my iPhone 4S days, I have only streamed podcasts using the free app - Stitcher Radio. Stitcher streams just as well on the 3G, 4G, LTE or
WIFI networks. Stitcher allows you to mark podcasts as favorites or create playlists for your podcasts. It is called Stitcher because it stitches your list of podcasts together to create your own personal radio station. It doesn't matter whether the podcast is a daily, weekly, monthly or whenever they get a chance to update the podcast show, Stitcher will play the next available podcast with the newest content. You can place the shows in the order that you desire, so you can place the daily shows at the top so that you get the latest content first. The longer you listen to your personal show, the older content will play eventually play. You can jump to any show or even a particular episode of any show at anytime.
You can get recommended shows that are similar to the shows that you are listening to or have saved as favorites or in your playlists. So this feature allows you to find content that you may never know about if you were just listening to podcasts in the Apple Podcast app. Additionally, they have a channel called "Smart Station" that will automatically add shows to this smart station based on your thumb ups and thumb downs.
Lastly, They even have live radio stations that allows you to listen to live radio stations that are near your location or via category based selections like talk, sports, music or location. I love this app and I listen to it twice daily; in the morning as I
head to work and again or the return trip home. My car has a Bluetooth enable radio and I love streaming it into the car's stereo system, but mostly I enjoy it via my LH HBS700 Bluetooth headset, Jambone JamBOX Bluetooth speaker or BOSE QuietComfort 15 wired headphones.
Thanks,

Hi Rob,
Thought the listeners would enjoy this tweak. It adds a toggle in options in the camera app.
When phototorch is turned on, whenever the camera flash toggle is turned on (not auto) the flash constantly stays on instead of just flashing. Very helpful for night pictures.

Hi Tash - not that I know of - At least not with out Jailbreaking - if anyone knows of a way with a jailbreak to close out all the open tabs in Safari on an iOS device - please let us know.
Hi Rob,
Is there a backgrounder like tweak in Cydia that works with iOS 6?

Hi Rob,
I went to register for the full version of PDANet for my jailbroken iPhone 5 today, fully expecting to pay the full $29, and was pleasantly surprised to see that the full version is on a promo sale right now for $16.
I couldn't find any info on the duration of this promo, but hopefully it'll stay on long enough for your listeners to get wind of it.
If anyone else out there has been holding off on buying the full version of PDANet, now seems like a good time to go for it.

Thanks matt for the heads up - and folks if your were thinking about getting PDA net the full version - now seems to be the time.
0065 - Sound Cylinder™ | Definitive Technology®
One of the items I have been testing out of late is the Sound Cylinder from Definitive Technology. This is one of the best looking Bluetooth speakers I have seen - actually it is the best looking. It is beautifully crafter Cylinder that offers 2.1 sound - meaning it has 3 speakers - a left and right speaker and a subwoofer for bass from both left and right combined. 2Watts for each the left and right speaker and 4 Watts for the sub-woofer. If you like base this speaker offers some nice base. While it is a cylinder it does have a kickstand and a mounting bracket where you stick in your iPad so you can have your iPad mounted up on this and watch a movie or music videos. You can also mount it on top of your Mac Book Pro screen. There is a notch out that is the right size so as to not block your cam and mic on the top of the screen. For battery life they said it is about 10 hours - my testing seemed to go longer than that - as I was able to run it for at least 3 days with on and off usage each time through out the day. Dave's lounge sounded great. Now this is not a cheap speaker - this is a higher end speaker - it runs $199. The only downside I saw with it at all was when an iPad was mounted in it in portrait mode - if you bumped into it - it could fall forward - I did not see this happen with it when it was in landscape mode. So just be careful and I would recommend if using it in Portrait mode to make sure you keep an eye on it and push it back on the kickstand to make sure it is leaning back when you first mount it. But sound wise and looks wise it really is a beautiful and great sounding speaker. It also accepts a standard 1/8th inch line in if you don't have bluetooth. If you have a mac book pro or an iPad - this is a really high quality addition for nice loud and full sound. One nice thing with this speaker it switched effortlessly between my iPad and iPhone - with the speaker turned on and running my iPad - I turned off the iPad and turned on bluetooth on my iPhone and it connected with out having to turn off the speaker - some other speakers I have - required some effort to switch off. This one switched really easy between devices. Search for Sound Cylinder in the show notes for ep 265 over at today in iOS dot com.
A quick heads up Netflix updated their app on Monday the 22nd to Version 4.0. What is new you ask - well according to iTunes what is new is quote This new app release makes watching Netflix TV shows and movies an even better experience.
• Easy episode selection with a brand new episode selector on the iPad
• Redesigned audio and subtitle selector on iPad and iPhone
• Bug fixes
unquote.
I will say if you are JB and using xcon to trick it into thinking you are not jailbroken - you may want to hold off updating until it is clear wether this new version causes any issues with xcon users. Oh and yeah if you don't like change any change - yeah maybe you don't want to update either. But then again you are probably still on the original iPhone and this version does not work with it anyway as it requires iOS version 5.0 or later.
Hi Rob.
I am told that Bluetooth 4.0 exists in the iPhone 4s/5 and supports video streaming. Do you or your listeners know of a Back-up Camera that utilizes this and transmits video directly to the phone? If not, maybe a developer can start a Kickstarter project that provides this function! It would be nice if when I hit reverse gear, it would send me a notification on my iPhone and when selected, opens up the video stream.
Thanks for all you do.
Brian in Toronto.
Hey Rob,
Ever since two versions of iTunes ago, every time I sync my iPhone 5, about 20 songs sync every time. After much research on google and apple forums, my songs still sync.
The only thing I have now determined these songs have in common is there all songs I purchased on iTunes. They appear to be AAC. Do you know or have you heard of how to stop iTunes from syncing purchased AAC music every sync?
Thanks so much for you help and I really appreciate the work you do on my favorite podcast!

Hi Rob,
Low on space? Have Pimp Your Screen installed? Check its storage usage! Settings -> General -> Usage. You may need to show all apps.
I was looking at my app usage and found PYS was using 550MB! Of course, one could just delete the app and reinstall it, right? But where is the fun in that? There has to be a harder way! :-)
For jailbreakers:
Install AppLinks from Cydia. This creates relabel directory names for all yout apps. Open AppLinks and click on the refresh icon in the bottom left. When done, close the app.
Using iFile (from Cydia), go to your home directory. Go to AppLinks -> Pimp Your Screen. Now you are in the app's home folder.
Go to Library -> Cache -> Three20. For me, there were 429 files that seem to average a little over 1MB each in size. Deleted all of the files to the Trash. Emptied the trash.
Now PYS shows 63MB. Much better!
I could not find any settings for PYS in-app or in Settings. So, I didn't see any way to force PYS to clear its cache.
Thought this might help some listeners.
You could leave out the jailbreak stuff if you want to make the segment a lot shorter. :-)
Enjoy life!

Rev = $43.6 Billion (vs $39.2 Billion a year ago quarter and $54.5 Billion last quarter)
Total Cash = $144.7 Billion (up $7.6 Billion for the quarter from $137.1 Billion)
Last Quarter Sales:
iPhones Sold = 37.4 Mil (vs 35.1 Mil a year ago quarter and 47.8 Mil last quarter)
iPads Sold = 19.5 Mil (vs 11.8 Mil a year ago quarter and 22.9 Mil last quarter)
All iPod's Sold = 5.6 Mil (vs 7.7 Mil a year ago quarter and 12.7 Mil last quarter)
iPod Touches Sold = Not given as usual but over half of the 5.6 Mil iPods sold
Misc:
>850,000 iOS apps

Tim Cook when asked about the 5" display - said there are a lot of tradeoff's for the large screens and they would not build a larger screen while those trade offs existed - which to me sounds like Apple speak for they are working on a 5" display.
