Hi_Rob, hope you and your family are well. I produced this piece of artwork for your show with an app called Fakers Gold. It allows you to create your own newspapers and magazines. I have great fun putting my family and friends in them, and now it's your podcast's turn! Hope you like it.

-------------------------------
So if you have the Tii App - last week you got a push on the 24th saying that WWDC tickets would go on sale on the 25th at 10:00 AM PT - Thanks to Jeff I for the heads up on that initially. After I sent the push to all of you with the Tii App - I then sent an email to my boss and said if we wanted to send anyone we needed to buy the tickets as soon as tickets went on sale - because I felt they would sell out in 10 minutes maybe 20 minutes worst case. Wow was I off - they sold out in just 90 seconds. 1.5 minutes. oh my. So if you are a Father / son dev team - and you wanted to go to WWDC as a family event you could only buy one ticket at a time - which means there was no way for you to get through the process for both tickets in the 90 seconds it took to sell out - at $1600 dollars a ticket. For the 5,000 tickets. By that way that means Apple made about $8 Mil in ticket sales in under two minutes. And cheese - I thought getting on line at Southwest 2 minutes late to get my boarding pass was horrible - at least there I still get on the plane - even if it is at the end of a B group. Philp Elmer Dewitt at Fortune had a post on this and to compare how quickly Apple sold out this year vs past years in a chart - he had to go to a logrithmic scale. I did love one of the comments to the post quote Analysts were expecting a sellout in 89 seconds. This drastic miss on expectations clearly indicates that the growth of developer interest in iOS and OSX is slowing. unquote. Kudos to LTMP for his spot on snarky humor.
Oh and Per the Date of the event Apple announced that this years WWDC would be June 10th to the 14th. Which is kind of when people felt it would be. Given Tim cook's comments about no new products until the Fall - it seems WWDC again this year will be all about the software.
0015 - iPhone Predicted to Surpass Android Market Share by 2015 - Mac Rumors
Interesting numbers and predictions out of the Yankee Group this past week. This comes from a survey they did of 16,000 US smartphone users. They found 91% of iPhone owners plan to purchase another iPhone when they can upgrade. While for Android the number is just 76% and 3/4's of the one quarter looking to switch are looking to get an iPhone. The Yankee group then Used those Loyalty numbers to project what the Overall Cellphone market in the US would look like in 2017 and what they found is come 2017 - the number one OS for cellphones would be iOS - not just smartphones - but all cell phones. And they have iOS with 42% of the market up from 2013's 20% market share. Android would be number 2 at 34% of the market - which is the same % they have every year from 2013 to 2017 according to their predictions. Number 3 in the list would be non-smartphones - with 12% market share - down from 2013's 32%. Windows phone in 2017 would be at 7% of market share. Although they show them with 4% in 2013 - Hmmmm - that does not seem likely. Blackberry will be at 2% in 2017 down from 3% in 2013. I guess some people just don't like change. Yes I am looking at my Wife on that one.
Interesting numbers overall. But the basic premise is that a much smaller % of iOS users plan to leave iOS - and a much bigger % of Android users plan to leave and over time that means More iOS users. Logically that all makes sense - and you can even prove out the math - except 2017 is a long way off - and there will be lots of product launches between now and then. I hope they are right - guess come 2017 if you are listening to this then please remind me to go over the numbers to see how they did.
iPad tops in satisfaction among tablet owners | Apple - CNET News
And for the second year in a row - JD Powers has the iPad as the highest rated tablet. Shocker. Which means if Apple holds it loyalty numbers for Tablets like it does for iPhones - come 2017 - the iPad should also still be the top selling tablet. Surprisingly the number 2 tablet on the survey was Amazon's kindle fire - which runs an older version of Android and well is kind of cheap feeling. However the Survey rankings are based on a score from 4 different areas - Performance, ease of operation, features and cost. I am guessing the Kindle fire did pretty well in the cost area. I kind of gave up mentioning the JD powers survey's on the iPhone - because well it was year after year of the iPhone being on top. Guess the same is likely for the iPad.

Rob,
Yes you are able to close all the tabs in Safari on an iPhone/iPad/iPod.
This can be done in Settings. Go to Safari & toggle Private Browsing on or off and it will ask you if you want to close or keep all pages that are currently open.
Hopefully iOS 7 will allow an easier way to access Settings to make this easier with less taps.
Regards,
Mr. Nilo
Hi Rob,
Go to the Settings app > Safari and toggle Private Browsing On, tap Close All, then back off (selecting either). Done.

Hi Rob,
For the guy (shannon?) in episode 264 who wants an app that updates budgets between his an his wife's phone: he should try "HOMEBUDGET". I find it does exactly this and after downloading you just enable family sync and you're live. I currently use it find it works perfectly.

Hey Rob,
For the listener who wants a music app with a sleep timer. I would suggest "Songza". It also has nature sound playlists to help you get to sleep, like ocean waves, tropical rainforest, or thunderstorms.
Second a listener was looking for a banking app. I have recently found "Pageonce" and have loved it. If you sign in to your banking online account it can view and update all of your activity automatically. And if you pay bills online(credit cards, utilities, phone bill...) it can do that too, with alerts telling you when you have a new bill to pay.
Third to the listener in podcast hades. I use "iCatcher" I have never had a problem with it. You can stream or download any and every podcast automatically or manually over 3G/4G. It also has a sleep timer if you listen before bed.

AT&T had their quarterly call last week and gave out numbers for iPhone sales - which was 4.8 Mil iPhones sold last quarter out of 6 Mil smartphones sold overall. It used to be the iPhone was mentioned and asked about multiple times - this time however the word iPhone only shows up one time in the whole transcript for the call. Last year - it was mentioned 7 times. You would think for a device that made up 80% of AT&T's smartphone sales last quarter - it would have received a little more attention then it did.
0025 - Sprint’s Q1 2013 iPhone Sales Show Flat Growth, Off The Pace Worldwide And At Home | TechCrunch
Now interestingly last week when Sprint had their call the iPhone was mentioned 8 times during the call. Sprint sold 1.5 Mil iPhones last quarter and a total of 5 Mil Smartphones overall - so the iPhone was only 30% of Smartphone sales at Sprint - yet the iPhone was mentioned 8 times in the call. Guess it is one of those inverse things - no reason to mention it at AT&T since it is 80% of smartphone sales - but at Sprint where it is only 30% - people and by people I mean Anal-ists are wondering what is going on at Sprint and why the low % of iPhone sales.
My guess is over time if those loyalty numbers we heard about from the Yankee group earlier in the show are true - as more and more Sprint customer come up on their upgrade cycle - they will move off Android and onto iPhones - we shall see.
Apple iPhone 5S to have 12MP Camera and HDR Video Recording - Tapscape
A Vietnamese Blog is reporting that the next iPhone will have a 12 MP camera and HDR recording. In the past early rumors about new Apple ware - coming out of Vietnam have proven to hold up - some times - and much more so than other areas - but not 100%. Does it make sense for Apple to go to a 12 MP camera - sure does - because most people love to play the numbers game and well Apple has pretty much improved the camera for each new version. After all the iPhone line is the most used camera line in the world when you look at uploads to photo sharing sites. And the iPhone is also been known for having the best camera over all -
and I would and anyone with a pulse would expect Appel to increase the camera - and guess what Sony's next gen camera module that is an upgrade from the one in the iPhone 5 - is you guessed it a 12 MP module. So yeah - this rumor makes sense - even if all they did was just connect the dots and speculate. Of course what the iPhone 5S really needs in the way of an improvement is better low light photos. That has been the one weakness for the iPhone line over the years - and hopefully something Apple addresses with the next iPhone. I think when the next Rumor Bingo card comes out - the 12 MB rumor will be right up there in the top left corner box.
0030 - Rumor: Leaked KDDI document claims 'iPhone 5S' pre-orders go live June 20, launch in July
There is a supposed leaked document out there from KDDI that claims the iPhone 5s pre-orders go live June 20th with a launch in July. Ummmm - No. The chances anyone and I mean anyone at KDDI or any other carrier at this time knows when the next iPhone will be launched and what it will be called - ZERO - Zip - NADDA - not the CEO of KDDI - not the CEO of AT&T or Verizon or Sprint or any other carrier anywhere in the world. Apple just does not share that info this early on. This is Apple we are talking about. And oh yeah there is that whole Tim Cook comment about nothing new until the fall too.
Boston bombings: Car jacking victim left iPhone in his car so police could track Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev | Mail Online
One of the reports coming out of the Bombings in Boston is that the bombers were planning on going to New York City the day they were killed / captured. And if they had gone to New York they would have set off bombs in Times Square. One of the key reasons they were killed and captured before they could actually carry out that deranged plan - was thanks to the Guy who they carjacked and forced to drive around with. The guy a 26 Tech entrepreneur had an iPhone and when he had a chance to escape - he purposefully left his iPhone behind because he knew he had find my iPhone turned on. He called the police and they used that feature to track the bombers and then confront them. Kudos to the guy that was carjacked for having the where with all to leave his iPhone behind and help save lives and really change the lives of many in NY that would have likely been injured or killed by those two lunatics. Which is now a good reminder - if you don't have find my iPhone turned on - now is a really good time to go and do that.

Hi Rob,
I noticed today on Verizon's website that my upgrade date on my iPhone was moved from Dec 24th, 2013 to April 24th, 2014. Verizon used to let us upgrade 4 months ahead of our actual contract date so I assumed it was a mistake. I called Verizon to discuss this and they said it wasn't a mistake, it was their new policy to not allow anybody to upgrade early anymore. They are only allowing it if your upgrade date is before September of this year. I told the rep that I thought it was poor business ethics to not even inform us of this change. He basically said that's the way it was and if I had a complaint, I would have to write a letter to their West Area Correspondence Team in Elgin, IL. They won't even let you talk to them or email them. Anyway, just thought I'd let you & all the listeners know about this.
Regards,
Shannon H, Fountain Hills AZ.
Hi Shannon - Thanks for that feedback - Seems interesting they said Anyone before September could do the upgrade early - almost as if they expect or now of a big Phone launch in September. If anyone else has had there upgrade date change please let us know and your thoughts on this. 206-666-6364 - that's 206-moon-dog - or email me at today in iOS at gmail dot com - and keep the language a clean as possible.
Hey Rob . I have been Listening since 2007.
I just got some Tmobile iPhones and they actually allow you to share you're 4g Internet with devices around you.
Just go to settings on the tmobile iPhone and and scroll down to hotspot sharing. They will give u a temporary pass key that you then log on with you're other devices. Sweet.
I now have 3 Tmobile iPhones in a family plan which we are currently paying just $30.00 a piece for unlimited service service. Every single phone I add is only $10.00 more for unlimited service which if I add two more will bring us down to a divided plan of just $20.00 a month plus the extra $20.00 that you would pay to finish paying off the phone itself. Still , way better plan than anyone else out there.

Hi Rob,
Greetings: I would strongly suggest the ios app: Pocket Casts. I rank it number one in reliability and flexibility. This app can import a unique podcast feed url not listed in their database of podcasts. Also, Pocket Casts supports PUSH notifications. It was created by a group of Australian developers (Shiftyjelly) but there is nothing that should prevent anyone from using it on their iphone.

Hi Rob,
in response to Bruce's question regarding a Podcasting app. My app of choice is Downcast. It is 1.99 in the App Store, but it is an extremely powerful and easy app to use. You can subscribe and update all your podcasts within the app, and create playlists that you can sort manually, by date or alphabetically. I use it every day and I can also vouch for the developer who is very quick to offer support for his app. This is my recommendation.

Hi Rob
This is a update since my email just over two months ago. I am happy to report that my brydge keyboard has now been replaced with a working unit of which I am now typing this email on. i am happy that in the end the story had a happy ending but to think the journey of two months to get to this stage could have been quicker and the brydge as a company could have dealt with the return processing a lot smoother without me having to chase them. The reason for the delay was they were not geared up to do international returns with mine being one of the first.
The keyboard has arrived in time for two conferences I am due to attend this week so it means I can leave my macbook at home and take the brydge. The keyboard has a lot to live up to when compared to the Zagg keyboard I have for my ipad 3 but I am enjoying the typing experience a lot better.
The lesson I have learnt from this experience is to think about my kickstarter backings in future so that I am not spending over £60, they actually have a product or the necessary permissions in place (eg iexpandr) and the product has a quick delivery time.
I'll get back to you in a couple of months to advise you of the long term thoughts.
Kind regards
Craig C
To Kickstarter we go - this week one of the projects that I found is the Hoodi - spelled - h o o d i - it is a magnetic shade for your iPad Maxi 3rd and 4th gen or another one for the iPad Mini - this project has a very modest goal of $10,000 and they are 41.57% of the way there and have until May 24th at 2:59 AM ET. So good chance they will make it. The hoodi costs $30 - and what the hoodi is is basically blinders for your Pad mini to block the sun from shinning on it so you can see what is one the screen - so if you are out at the pool this summer - you can use your iPad - and I am sure the hoodi on there will not hurt your chances with the ladies at all. But hey if you care more about reading your email then scoring with some hottie at the pool - then the hoodi is for you. Delivery for these is scheduled to start in July. This is kickstarter - so take that with a big grain of salt and a chlorine tablet to boot. In all seriousness - it does actually look like it could work - or at a min help quite a bit - for those of you that have used or tried to use the iPad at the pool - you know why this would be a good thing. Search for hoodi at kickstarter.com that is h o o d i - for hoodi that is not kickstarter.
0050 - Turn your iPad (*gasp*) into a Microsoft Surface with new Logitech FabricSkin Keyboard Folio | 9to5Mac
There were a few of you when Microsoft introduced the Surface said you liked the keyboard. Well Surface keyboard envy you shall no longer have - as Logitech introduced the Logitech FabricSkin Keyboards for the price of $150 - which is not to bad - since the surface keyboard costs $100. Also with the Logitech Keyboard it is really a case and keyboard and it is waterproof - so while at Starbucks and someone walks buy and spills their coffee on your iPad you are covered - literally. This is for the iPad Maxi - 3rd and 4th gens. It comes in Mars Red Orange, Carbon Black, Mystic Blue and Sunflower Yellow. It does actually look pretty nice and they are taking pre-orders now. And with that - there really is no reason to look at the Microsoft Surface ever again.
Swype VP confirms talks with Apple on revolutionary keyboard technology | 9to5Mac
I have heard from some that were saved from the Agony of Android that one app they do miss is Swype - it is a gesture keyboard that is pretty popular on the android side and it comes from Nuance - who has a relationship with Apple for its Voice recognition technology used in Siri. Well now a Swype exec has confirmed the company has had talks with Apple with regards to its Swype tech. What was not confirmed is what they talks were - it could be - Nuance saying Hey Apple - Hey Apple - want to see something cool - and Apple saying Thanks but not thanks. I mean those are talks. Hopefully however the talks were more along the lines - of Hey Nuance - Hey Nuance - want to see something cool - it is a check book. And now all they need to do is figure out the placement of the decimal point.

Hi Rob,
I have a First Gen iPad with IOS 5.1.1. When I am in the iTunes Store App for any length of time, anywhere from 30 seconds to 2-3 minutes, the app crashes. I can go back in, but it crashes repeatedly. I kill all the open apps and reboot the iPad and it lasts for a couple of minutes and crashes again. I even tried a factory reset with no restore. I think it's related to 5.1.1.
Is there something I can do to fix this or will Jailbreaking my iPad help in any way?
Regards,
Frank M
Hi Frank - I was going to respond - Nope not seeing this issue - can't help - but I would have only been half right - as I went and looked at my iPad 1st gen as well - and guess what - sure enough after a couple of minutes playing in the iTunes app - it quit and it did it again and again - even after closing out all other apps and doing a reset. So if anyone else has noticed this issue with iOS 5.1.1 and iTunes just quitting after a couple of minutes and knows of a fix - please help out Frank and I by letting us know what said fix is - 206-666-6364 or sending an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com. Oh and if you have a first gen iPad and think you don't have this issue - Well you might want to check the iTunes app store app out again - you might be surprised by what you find - I know I was.
Hi Rob,
Does anyone know of a app on ios that works like dashboard on Mac .could be good for apple to do this as it could ease the need for widgets. If anyone knows of one please help me out. Regards - Cameron B
Hi Rob,
Do you know of an iOS app that will show how many times an app has been used and or last time opened? I've gotten a lot of apps that I end up forgetting about. I'd like to use an app as I described to weed out what I don't use.
Regards, Gary in Boise
Hi Rob,
What is the best app or tweak on Cydia to backup all of my apps and tweaks that I have installed?
Regards
Max. Baltimore, MD.
Hi Max - One that has been mentioned before on the show and is recommended by Chris in London - is PKGbackup - Commercial version is $9.99.
Thanks to Mike for this next one. Which is about a jailbreak theme for iPads - that will allow you to make your iPad look and feel like a Mac. The Theme will set you back $3.50 and is from the repo - fnetdesigns.com/cydia/repo. Look for the link titled Transform your iPad into a Mac OS TEN Tablet in the show notes for ep 266 over at today in iOS dot com
Thanks to Tash for this next one. Which is about an update about an update to the Reeder App - as you may remember Google totally hosed a whole bunch of people with their decision to 86 Google Reader. Which is something the the Reeder App and many other apps relied on. Well v 3.1 of the Reeder app was just released and it comes with Feedbin and standalone RSS support. Feedbin being where many people that used to use Google Reader have migrated to. Important here is if you use Reeder and were using Google Reader - you can now import from Google Reader - and you have until July 1st to do so - as that is the pull the plug date for Google Reader. This update is for the iPhone version - iPad and Mac App users will have to wait just a bit longer to get their update.
0075 - Google Fiber app for iPad lands in App Store, no iPhone version yet | The Verge
I live surrounded by Towns that have announced or have Google fiber - to the East - West and North - their is google Fiber or at least plans for google fiber - but still no announcement that my city - Overland Park is getting it - but that is the rumor at least. In the mean time if you are one of the lucky few that does have google fiber - and prefer the iPad. Good news - you now can get the Google Fiber App for the iPad. At this point it is just for the iPad and not the iPhone - but Google did say an iPhone app is in the works and should be out soon - probably a lot sooner than any of us will see Google Fiber. Really at this point going into any features of the app would just be rubbing salt in our wounds. But hey if you want to be hated by all and you have Google fiber - go ahead and call in with your review of the Google fiber app for the iPad.
From the email bag.
Hi Rob,
I'm looking for a movie tracking app to keep track of movies I've seen and want to see. I'm looking for one that is able to combine movies in theaters now and movies on DVD or streaming. I see apps that do one but I haven't been able to find an app that combines both.
I don't see every movie in theaters, and then I tend to forget what I want to see by the time they are released on DVD or streaming.
