Thanks JEFF for the music and folks I will put the full song at the end of the episode. I also want to thank KEVIN for sending in the Artwork for today's show. KEVIN had the following to say.
Hi Rob,
I used an app called Photo Editor by Aviary on this picture. It's fast, simple, free and makes every photo magic.
Sorry about the Jayhawks.

Kevin Crossman
Born in Stanford CA
And Kevin modified a picture I posted on twitter of myself from 29 years ago where I was painted half red and half blue for a UD game - no not just my face - it was my whole body - I was more than a face painter I was a body painter.
KEVIN Thanks again for sending in this artwork and folks you can see KEVINS artwork in the Tii App in the extras for ep 301 or if you subscribe via iTunes on your computer as the album artwork and also as a stand alone post in the VIP section and at Facebook.com/todayinios.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote “E-readers will outsell iPads because of the simple economics of the consumer device market.
It’s triple the weight and 30% thicker than an e-reader. You need two hands to hold it. It’s got a backlit screen, and it’s too expensive to give one to everyone in your house.”
Russ Wilcox, CEO E-Ink (makers of Amazon’s Kindle), 28 January 2010
So Russ Former CEO of E-Ink how did that prediction work out for you? Guess maybe we should check with the Current CEO of e-ink - just saying.

-talks/6806363/
Sunday was not sure what the lead story would be this week - but thanks to the wall street journal and their need for link bait and bingo bango bongo - we have a lead story - and that is that Apple and comcast are getting close to announcing that Apple will supply set top boxes to Comcast customers. Well that is what it appears the rumor is. Like any rumor from the wall street journal - it has lots and lots of people picking up a few small bits of info and then overly speculating what else might be going on and when. Mind you from the WSJ article - it just said talks are still preliminary. But hey this comes back to what we had been saying for the last few episodes - it sure would be nice if the next Apple TV also worked as a set top cable box. And that is what this seems to be indicating the two parties are working towards.

fallon-used-to-duet-with-billy-joel-on-the-tonight-show
Quite a few of you sent in a link for this next one which is about Billy Joel's guest appearance on Jimmy Fallons The Tonight show - and the use of the app called Loopy HD - which even had tim cook comment on the segment. Which showed Billy Joel and Fallon using the app loopy HD and a couple of wireless mics and an iPad to record the different parts of the lion sleeps tonight. Which the results are incredible. And it looked like all you needed was that app and the mics Except there was some tech they did not show - so in addition to the iPad and the $7.99 app Loopy HD they also were using the apogee quartet to connect the wireless mics to the iPad. The Apogee quartet by the way costs 13 - 99 - not $13 dollars - but 13 hundred and 99 dollars that is.
So there was a little bit more needed then shown. But if you want you could use the Audio-Technica 2100 USB mic for $65 and the Apple camera connection kit for $29 and then do this with just one mic sans the Apogee Quartet. But that would not have looked as cool.
Link in the show notes to the video of them doing the recording and the results - along with info on the set up. Thanks again to all that sent in links for this one.

Dear Rob,
Regarding Mike in CT in episode 300, he mentioned that when he gets a call he taps the button on the handset. That is the problem. In my experience, whichever device you use to answer the call is the one the audio goes through, so if you tap the answer button on the phone, the call goes through the phone, but if you push a button on the Bluetooth device itself, the call will go through Bluetooth.
I did not catch if he is using a monaural or stereo headset. I have used both. The important thing is to make sure it supports the Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) if you want to listen to music or podcasts. For driving, I have been using a Jawbone ICON for years. The only thing it lacks is Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) so you can easily play/pause, but the newer Jawbone "HD" devices support AVRCP.
For stereo, I like the Plantronics BackBeat 903+, which supports both A2DP and AVRCP. I prefer the soft, flexible cable that connects the earphones behind my head, as opposed to ones which have a hard plastic band, which makes uncomfortable to wear in bed or a comfy chair.
Regards,
John in San Mateo
Thanks John and few others that emailed in about if you answer on the handset instead of the headset it does not go to the headset BY DEFAULT - and that is important because as this next emails shows it is a default setting.
Hi Rob,
On your show 300 show, a caller asked about his problem with receiving calls on his handset when he really preferred to answer on his actively paired Bluetooth device.
There is a setting he can activate to more reliably do this.
General
Accessibility
Incoming calls
3 options there
1. Default
2. Headset
3. Speaker
- Default setting will direct the audio to the device that he uses to accept or initiate the call. He may hear the ring on his paired Bluetooth device but if he answers the handset (iPhone) it will defer to the handset for audio. If he uses this Default setting, he really needs to answer the call from the Bluetooth device directly (by use of a button or tapping, whatever the Bluetooth device uses) if he wants audio to utilize the Bluetooth device
- Headset – if he activates this setting then all calls will be directed to the headset even if he answers the call with the handset
- Speaker – if enabled, all call audio will be directed to the iPhone speaker
Regards,
Fraser, from Ontario
Fraser - thanks for the heads on on that. I love learning something new.
Hi Rob,
On episode 300 you had a caller interested in a way to send a text directly from the pebble watch. I use "Email to SMS" by Antonio Asaro. It does work in a round about way, by sending the text as an email. You can Google the carriers email address but you have to know the persons carrier who you are sending the text to. I use it for my wife since most of the time all others can wait. Your not able to reply directly but it does get the job done.
Also I use the Plantronics Voyager Legend UC (https://www.plantronics.com/us/product/voyager-legend-uc)
Tons of features and very smart. Works flawlessly between all Bluetooth (iPhone, iPad, all rental car Bluetooth system devices) devices that I have tried to date. Also has a USB that plugs into your PC/Mac to use as soft phone. I work from home and travel a lot and use it every day all day.
I have had a Jawbone icon in the past, which had the best background reduction in my experience. However I lost it like I have most other headsets. The Voyager Legend UC comes with a great carrying case that charges it too so it's harder for me to lose.
It retails for $200 but is only $119 on Amazon. (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B009ZJ3MUM?pc_redir=1395091984&robot_redir=1)

We are now well over 500 members in our Google+ community.
Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.
Hey you know how I know the community is getting big - because now I am getting the spammers applying to join in. I reject a good 20 plus last week - so if you applied to get into the community and did not get accepted - email me - it is possible I rejected one of you legit folks by mistake.
One question in the community was from James Cipriano he asked quote Can someone explain the difference between powering down, reseting by holding the power button and home button, and reseting network connections in settings. What is an example for use of each. unquote
As mentioned in the thread - a simple power down - hold the power button for a few seconds and then slide the slider - will put the phone basically in a deep deep sleep - and when you power back on - it goes back to where you were - and if you had issue - back to those as well.
A hard forced reboot - is really not recommended - that is when you hold the power and home button until said device shuts downs and reboots.
And then there is what I often recommend - which is the reset network settings - which clears out all open communication sessions and reboots the phone. The reason this seems to solve lots of issues is that lots of issues are with apps and the radios getting stuck when trying to communicate. This fixes those issues by resetting everything communication wise - guess what if you have lots of radios in a device - some times there are conflicts and issues. Is it a cure all - No absolutely not - but from my experience and many callers experience it is a cure many. James I hope that helps.
And there were dozens and dozens and dozens of other posts in the Google+ community - and all in an Android bois free zone and spammer free zone. Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

http://www.idownloadblog.com/2014/03/21/how-to-place-folders-within-
folders-on-ios-7-1/
Ok - again thanks to all that sent in the link on this next one - which is a way to get nested folders back in iOS 7.1
This comes from Jose Rodriguez and it requires some planning and quick reflexes. It works like this - have your folder you want to nest in another folder set up. next to it have two apps not in folders - drag one app on to the other app - as it is creating a folder tap and hold the folder you want to nest in the new folder and drag it on to and into the new folder. I did this and it did work for me. But it does take some getting used to. And is not as simple as taking your current folders and dragging them into another folder you had already.
But if you plan right you could then drag two other apps together and take that first folder your created and nest that in there - and then you are three layers deep in folders.
But forget about placing anything new in the nested folder - once that folder is nested - you can not add anything to it. So again if you want this to be useful you need to do some advanced planning - which honestly seems like way way too much work - I would rather just play a game or chess If I have to start thinking 5 moves out.

http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/03/22/apples-iphone-5c-failure-flop-
outsold-blackberry-windows-phone-and-every-android-flagship-in-q4
Thanks that sent in the post from Apple Insider - which goes over again the Myth and the reality of the iPhone 5C sales. The myth is that the iPhone 5C is an abysmal failure - the Edsel of the smartphone industry or maybe even worse the Dell Ditty of the smartphone industry.
And then there is the reality - in the fall - the iPhone 5C was either the 2nd or 3rd best selling smartphone at all the major US carriers.
The article is nice to calling to task those that most helped propagate the myth or fabrication or lie that the iPhone 5C is not selling at all. And those people according to the article are Lorraine Luk, Eva Dou and Ian Sherr from the WSJ and Brad Reed and Chris Ciaccia from BGR
Now to be fair to Reed and Ciaccia at BGR - Apple insider also pointed out that in the past others at BGR have called the 4S a failure, and the 4 and the 3GS. Yeah - the all failed if you call being the top selling smartphone globally during the initial release only getting knocked off by another iPhone - and I guess from that perspective - the 5C definitely does not live up to it predecessors - as it was never close to being the best selling smartphone in the world - because it had the unfortunate situation where it was released at the same time as the iPhone 5S. The point is this - if someone calls the iPhone 5C a failure or a flop - they can only be talking with respect to how it sold vs the iPhone 5S - because if they compare it to any other smartphone in the world sold last quarter - then will only the 5S beat it - not even the Galaxy S4 sold as many as is projected that the 5C sold last quarter.
I am guessing Blackberry would kill to have a flop or failure like the 5C.

http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9247123/iOS_tops_Android_for
_Web_browsing_in_U.S._and_other_developed_nations?
Well there is another group of web surfing numbers released for mobile devices. Hey and same as it ever was. Even though there are more Android devices out there - the majority of web browsing on mobile devices by a wide margin is once again done on iOS devices. 62% of ALL mobile web browsing from the US in 2013 was done on an iOS device.
But the US was not the country with the highest % using iOS - the UK and France were at 65% - Japan was at 68% - Canada was at 73% and Australia showing once again it has the smartest people in the world - had 74% of mobile web browsing from an iOS device.
In China - it was only 49.5% from iOS. But expect that number to rise now that Apple is finally on the largest carrier there. Actually it is amazing it is 49.5% as that was for 2013 all prior to the launch on China Mobile.
Again interesting stats - but given that Android devices are out selling - with selling in quotes - iOS devices in all those countries - it does not matter as iOS devices are actually you know used more in all those countries and it is not close for the developed nations.

Thanks to Mark H for the heads up on this next Gaff - oops - um - it is a good thing Balmer is not at MS anymore story.
And that is about a tweet from Joe Belifiore - who is the chief of Microsoft's windows phone dev and design - In his tweet he posted a shot of Bill and Melinda gates speaking to his twitter account from an iPhone - dooohhh. He said he just happened to be doing competitive testing on the latest iOS - but really - posting a public tweet from an iPhone while testing - what are you doing showing everyone at MS and the world that the iPhone running iOS 7 can post to twitter - I think Ellen degenerous already proved that point. Hi Rob,
I just wanted to make a comment you said when you were comparing upgrading from the 4 to the 4S or to the 5 that you would not recommend going from a 4s to a 5 well I will have to disagree with you because in my opinion with Verizon that was a major upgrade going from 3G to 4G LTE
Regards Steve
Hi Steve - valid point if you were on Verizon - but pretty much every other carrier at that point and time for the majority of their users - the update from the 4S to 5 - did not bring a big update in download speeds. Sure for some users it did - but most user did not have access to LTE speeds when the 5 launched. But yes for those that did - that was a nice bump - that said - when I did my comparisons of the different updates - I actually factored in LTE and gave it a +3 in my scale.
http://tii.libsyn.com/i-phone-5-how-big-an-update-vs-past-updates-for-i-phone-4s-and-4
I will put a link to my blog post from Sept 12th where I compared updates - and in that comparison - it was clear the 4S update was a bigger deal compared to the 4 than the 5 was to the 4S - even when including the LTE update. of course if you had verizon service and traveled a lot and download speed is your most important factor - then LTE vs 3G might for those users be more important than everything else.
Hello Rob
You previously mentioned about Apple acquiring some sapphire from a company. I have seen rumors on the Internet about an iRing coming out to control your iPod. I think this is what the Sapphire maybe use for more than anything, please let me know your thoughts on this.
Thanks

Nope - and Nope - as is nope the sapphire is not for the iRing and nope there is no iRing.
Hi Rob,
Congratulations on your 300th episode.
I'm commenting on the notification bug a caller shared with a particular app which calls the notification arrow to show nonstop on his iPhone. I'm having the same problem with the app foursquare, in which the notification arrow stays lit on my iPhone home screen even though the app is closed out and not running in the background. But when I go in the privacy settings to switch off the notification for Foursquare the arrow goes away. I have done the steps you recommend to the other caller:
•To clear out all of the background apps
•Reset network settings.
The problem is still there. Do you have any other recommendations before I contact the people at Foursquare and let them know this is a bug?
Grace & Peace,
Brian
Hi Brian - here is an email from Ben K.
Hi Rob,
A caller said he was having problems with location settings on all the time. I think it is because of iOS 7.1. Background app refresh now functions without apps being in multitasking. Settings general background app refresh and if he turns that off, it should be fixed.
Regards,
Ben K
Brian I hope Ben's email helped you and the caller from Ep 300.

without-a-signal
Thanks to Ben K for the heads up on the app FireChat - which is Yet another Messaging App - hey one Messaging app gets 19 Billion dollars and what you think no one noticed. Ok - so what sets this one apart from others is that it uses a peer to peer mesh network. That means if you have multiple iOS devices with wifi or bluetooth running even with no internet connection - they can connect together and messages can move across the mesh network these devices create - this is thanks to a feature in iOS 7 called Multipeer connectivity framework - Which again is called a mesh network from the 1990s terminology. Which is cool - as a group of people at a party or university could set up their own mesh network with the app sending messages to one another that never get seen by the NSA or anyone not on the mesh. Overly Practical for the masses - probably not - but very cool to see implemented and maybe for some niche it will find a home.

http://stanfy.com/blog/get-on-apples-radar/
This next one is for the devs out there. It is a post titled - Get on Apple's radar - and gives suggestions on how to get Apple to notice and feature you. This offers some pretty good advice and goes along with what I have seen work for Podcasts. At the end of the day Apple only has a limited number of slots where they can feature Apps - and many many more times the number of Apps then said slots. So it helps if you know someone at Apple - and knowing someone at apple means putting in some work to meet some one at apple at a live event - wwdc or one of their dev tours - or as they recommend - submitting bug reports during the beta process and afterwards. You would be surprised how well the do something nice for someone else - and have something nice done for you approach works. Anyway if you are a dev - this is a nice read. Most of these type articles I tend to skip over - but this one made the cut. Look for the link titled - Get on Apple's Radar in the show notes for ep 301

I want to take a minute now to talk about Hover - if you go to hover.com and use promo code - tiiTV you can get 10% off your domain name registrations and transfers when you sign up as a new hover user.
And today I am going to talk about Email - Hover offers up custom emails. Which if you are trying to look professional - you at your own domain dot com looks more impressive then your name 64 @ gmail dot com. I know I go to my rob@podcast411.com email when I am reaching out to someone new and trying to impress. Plus I am going to NAB in April and I got a press pass and one of the requirements was your email could not be from a free email account. So todayinios at gmail would not work - but rob@podcast411.com did.
Hover has great tutorials on how to set up your custom email for your iOS device as well as many other tutorials on setting up the email for other platforms and software.
Hovers email offering is everything you would be looking for - POP and IMAP - Webmail - 2Gig of storage - email forwarding and wait for it - Customer support. Yes with hover your get great customer support - which is one thing I hear back all the time form listeners that use hover - they love the customer support. All that for $20 a month. $35 a month gets you to 10 Gig of storage. Or $5 a month will get you email forwarding to your gmail account.
No matter which one you choose - it is much more professional sounding to have your name at your domain dot com - that something at gmail dot com.
Remember to save 10% on your registrations or email accounts go to hover.com - and use promo code tiiTV - that is tii T V. Isn't it time for you to like registering domain names again. Thanks Hover for supporting this show.

Hi Rob,
I have seen some posts about battery life being worse in 7.1 but on my iPhone 5, it seems better.
I used to lose 10% battery over 8 hours at night if I did not plug it in…now I lose none.
Maybe it fixed something running wild but I tried everything including getting a new phone on my Square Trade warranty and it as all the same.
Weird.
Edgar P
Tampa, FL
Edgar - not weird - you see what I see and many other see - no change or improved battery life. It is those squeaky wheels that get the blog posts. Plus blog posts with the title - Of Battery life stays the same and may go up a little in iOS 7.1 - don't get the link bait love - that "Lots of iOS 7.1 users are experience dire battery life" or something else more ominous sounding.
Hi Rob,
Apple definetly headed in the right direction with
7.1 with some of the accessibility optoins, but my hope
is they can improve some things.
1. The keyboard text could be even bolder like
the older iOS versions.
2. The background being more of a beige shade like
the older iOS versions.
I will say though that Touch ID does work more smoothly for me and seldom
have to enter a passcode.

Rick from East Haven, CT
Hi Rick Go Huskies.
HeyRob! It's Laura in Nashville! Wondering what you think of this app that actually downloads from this website and not the App Store? It shows tons of free movies and cartoons, even new movies like frozen. Sounds too good to be true so it probably is, but seems sketchy that it acts like if you click on take me to the App Store button it just downloads the app to your home screen
http://gappcenter.com/cartoon/
Hi Laura,
Wow seems really really sketchy.
That they show the Available on the App store link and all - but when you click on that for an iOS device it will put a webapp on your iOS device. And who knows what is happening with the videos it streams.
My guess is they are really going after android users with maleware and side loading an app - and they added the iOS part to make the site look legit. If you notice there is the Google Play button there that does not take you to google play.
This is why there is male ware issues out there - and what better bait then with free videos - now usually they are for disney nasties - You know movies staring some 18 year old named bambi and some hairless dude named thumper that they use to lore victims in and not real disney movies like Frozen. But you have to admit they did a really good job making the site look legit.

Hi Rob,
I Just posted the story on 7.1 Jailbreak to the google Plus community. Its a good start. Here is the link.

Thanks Chris for the link - so far it looks like they have the iPhone 4 running iOS 7 jailbroken - but it is going to be some time before they get them all and get a non-tethered jailbreak for iOS 7.1 for all devices - which means if you need to jailbreak - and are jailbroken - do not - repeat do not upgrade to iOS 7.1. Just need to chill for a while - and it could be a long while.

Thanks to Bob B and a few others for the heads up on this next one. Actually this is one that in the future is destined for feature in the how wrong were they segment. And it is about the Anal-ist - Trip Chowdhry - with Global Equities Research who said quote
""They only have 60 days left to either come up with something or they will disappear," It will take years for Apple's $130 billion in cash to vanish, but it will become an irrelevant company ... it will become a zombie, if they don't come up with an iWatch."
Yes - because only an iWatch will save Apple from becoming I guess well what Dell has become. Sounds like Trip is taking the money clients gave him and he is spending it on cheap booze and LSD. Because he clearly is tripping out if he thinks if Apple does not release an iWatch before WWDC - that they will essentially become dead man walking.

Hi Sharde - I could not replicate this issue using my iPhone 5S - and my 4S is jailbroken at a lower level - so I am going to through this out to anyone in the audience - are you having issues with Siri not being able to set a reminder in your iPhone 4S running iOS 7.1? If so give us a call 206-666-6364 - thats 206-moon-dog or send an email to today in iOS At gmail dot com.
Hey Rob:
So excited that iOS 7.1 includes CarPlay. Apple has done their side, now I am waiting for Honda to do their side of things, which will be some sort of update at the Honda dealer. When I called Honda America Customer Service, they knew what I was talking about (!!!) and said the update would be coming "soon." They said there would be a notification on the HondaLink Owner's site. That was over a week ago, so I am wondering if you have any idea of what is happening?
I have been a Today in iOS podcast listener for about a year and love hearing what is going on, and actually understand some of it!
Thanks for all you do. Keep up the good work and congrats on Episode 300!

Hi Rob,
Have you or any listeners had this happen? I searched for autozone. Found the app. I clicked FREE. I clicked INSTALL. Then I get the message
Quote - The Item you tried to buy is no longer available unquote
Any ideas what is going on. I restarted my iphone and got the same results.
Thanks for all you do. Ive been a listener since day one and still learn something every episode.

Hi Guy - usually that means the app has been pulled down or put on hold by the dev - maybe they are getting ready to do an update or they noticed a major bug - and have an update getting ready to submit. Or it could just be an issue on iTunes side as a re-index is going on. iTunes sometimes acts flakey - but when I have seen this before for some of our apps at libsyn - it was because we had put it on hold as we got ready to update.
That all said - the app in question downloaded fine for me - which was the free Autozone app.
