In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote “Microsoft will ultimately muscle-out Apple as the leader in smartphones and tablets. Apple’s insistence on controlling every aspect of both its software and hardware puts it at a disadvantage to a more flexible Microsoft. unquote

Yay - Another Apple live event - which means most rumors are squashed - a small number proven right - and a few pushed out to next years Rumor bingo card.
Today's event was on Apples Campus.
And it started with a good Propoganda film showing those waiting on line for iPhones and them coming into Apple stores and them coming out with iPhones - nope did not show the guy in Australia dropping his.
Then Tim Cook came out with shirt untucked and gave numbers with out numbers - as Ken Ray would say. No Actual numbers were given about the iPhone sales. Just saying in the first 30 days more orders were taken then ever before for the first 30 days by a large margin - numbers without numbers.
Then it was on to ApplePay - which will begin on Monday the 20th - and there are more partners on board or will be before the end of the year.
Then on to Apple Watch - and the announcement of WatchKit for devs rolling out in November.
Then Craig Federighi came out with shirt tucked in to talk about iOS 8 and OS X.
48% of iOS users are now running iOS 8. iOS 7 is now 46%. In just 26 days.
He showed a 3rd party keyboard for klingon.
Then talked about iOS 8.1 - and the bringing back Camera roll and supporting Apple Pay - which means iOS 8.1 will be launched on or before Oct 20th.
Then a lot of Yada Yada on Yosemite - Continuity - Yada Yada - Demo. Ok - Demo was cool. And then they called Steven Colbert. Colbert had a good joke about you know what I see when I look at my wrist? My Wrist - get to work chop chop.
Yosemite is available today the 16th. iOS 8.1 - available on Monday the 20th. I hope at this point I don't have to say it - but wait a bit before updating.
Tim came back on stage to talk about the iPad.
Over 225 Million iPads sold to date. 70 mil iPads last 12 months.
iPad Mini Retina - 100% customer satisfaction.
675,000 iPad Apps.
Then intro'd the iPad Air 2. Thinner - and it is Gold - and yes if you try you can bend it.
Then Phil Shiller came on stage - shirt untucked - to talk about the iPad Air 2 - 6.1 MM thin. Worlds Thinnest Tablet.
Less then half the thickness than the original iPad.
Added Anti-Reflective display. "lowest Reflectivity of any Tablet"
Announced A8X - chip. 40% Faster CPU vs A7.
Graphics performance is 180 Times better than Original iPad.
Still get 10 Hour battery life.
And yes the M8 Co-Processor.
And Yes a Barometer.
Camera - is flush - not sticking out - but it is an 8 MP camera. 1080p HD video. f/2.4 Aperture, 1.12 u Pixels.
This means it is a really good camera on the iPad Air 2.
Burst Mode photos added as well as Time Lapse and slo-mo - 120 fps - not 240 fps like iPhone.
Improved Facetime - front camera.
Faster Wifi - 802.11AC as expected. And Faster LTE bands.
And Yes - it has Touch ID - as expected and leaked the day before.
Apple Pay - online - ONLY - So NO NFC - guess they needed to hold that back for next years iPads.
They did a demo of Pixelmator - and ummm - I need to get that app.
To quickly go over the iPad Air 2
Improved Retina Display
2nd gen 64 bit A8X
New Cameras front and back
Touch ID
802.11AC Wifi
6.1 MM thin
And available in Silver, Space Grey and Gold.
Pricing $499, $599 and $699 for 16 Gb, 64Gb and 128GB
So a $100 price drop for the top two levels.
And last years iPad Air - starts now at $399.
The iPad Mini 3 - only has a 5 MP camera. vs the 8 MP camera on the iPad Air.
And for Wifi - it is 802.11n - Huhh? Why not go to AC like everything else?
And the iPad Mini 3 - still has the A7 Processor.
Essentially the difference between the Mini 2 and mini 3 is touch ID and the new Gold option.
It seems like someone or everyone on the iPad Mini Team just threw up their hands and said awww what does it matter the iPhone 6 and 6+ are going to kill off the iPad Mini sales anyway. I would like to say they phoned in this update - but that would be an insult to Phones.
Pricing for the iPad Mini 3 -
$399, $499 and $599 also for 16, 64 and 128 GB versions.
So yes again a $100 price drop for the 64 and 128 GB versions.
And the Original iPad mini is now $249, iPad mini 2 - is now $299
You can Pre-Order the iPad Mini 3 and iPad Air 2 on the 17th - shipping next week. I don't expect anyone waiting on line for these devices. At best you could say evolutionary change - and even there that is really pushing it - lets call it an incremental change to these devices.
Then on to they went Mac.
They went over the new iMac - and then talked about a new iMac Mini - which I know quite a few devs get this for coding on. So you will be happy to know it is now starting at $499.
Tim Came back on stage and that was it. Ended 80 minutes after it started. Yikes - No new Apple TV? Obviously their tag line its been to long - was not a prediction about todays event.
Plenty of Time available in the presentation to Introduce a new Apple TV - Kinda shocked by the lack of that introduction.
What say you.
Into the email bag we go:
Hi Rob,
I must say… the most exciting thing to come out of Apple’s iPad announcement today was the reduced pricing on the older models. Especially with the Mini 2. Checking out the refurbished section in their online store, old Mini’s are going as low as $209.00. Even last year’s model is just $250.00 to start. Even the Minis with cell service you can now get for around $320.00 or so.
The touch ID is nice and all and if you’re into flashy gold, then I suppose that’s good too, but other than that, this year’s Mini feels more like something Apple just put out to not goa year without releasing a small tablet model.
I guess the enhanced photo and video editing will be compelling to some folks, but honestly…my Air from last year has served me quite nicely.
You figure that they would do away with the 16GB versions on the phones and tablets at this point, but who knows, maybe in their own way they are. By making the 64GB and 128GB devices basically $100.00 cheaper whose going to bother with the 16GB option? Perhaps the 16GB iPhones and iPads are aimed more for businesses or institutions that issue devices to their employees or even students where the number of apps and content and corresponding storage size is irrelevant?
Anyway, I’ve been holding out on getting an Apple TV hoping that it would be updated, but since that’s not the case at least for the next six months I’m guessing, I’m going to go grab myself a $75.00 refurbished model from the Apple store now.
I don’t necessarily want to say that today was underwhelming, because I have no doubt that the new Air is going to be the best tablet experience out there, but is it enough to warrant me dropping another $700.00? Especially when Apple’s offering such good prices on their older stuff that is still nothing to sneeze at? I’ll say no.
Just my thoughts.
Cris from California
Hi Rob,
I just glanced at the iPad Mini Iii’s specs and am a bit disappointed that there is no A8 chip. So now i have a hard decision: Since the mini is basically last year’s model with touch ID and no NFC, do I get that one or just save money and suck up the storage issue and go with last year’s? Only did a cursory glance, as been busy doing quantum, but I might want to get a pre-order in so am trying to make a decision soon.
Hope you can give your thoughts on the show. Really not sure if I can wait another year, as Continuity intrigues me very much. If it had the a8 there would be no question.
Regards,
Chelsea
Hi Rob,
Am I crazy or did they really skip Apple TV again?
Regards,
Laura B
Hi Laura - I can't answer the crazy part - but I can answer the did they skip Apple TV again - Yes - Yes they did.
Simply amazing.
What again did the tag line - Its been way too long - actually refer to?
I am guessing the invite for the event that the Apple TV is announced in will have the tag line - The devil is ice skating - or The Cubs win the Word Series - or something like that.

http://tii.libsyn.com/oct-2014-apple-event-rumor-bingo
So how did the bingo card do this time around.
Items that were a Yes - iPad Mini 3rd Gen - Yes. iPad Air 2nd Gen - Yes - and Touch ID for the iPad - Yes but those were kinda a given being Apple themselves spilled the beans on those two via a screen shot for the iBook for iOS 8.1 - oooppps.
A8X - Processor - Yes - almost gave that a kinda - as it was only for the iPad Air 2. But since the rumor on that one got the name right A8X - and not just A8 - we will say yes for it. And that was the only Bingo.
Other items correct in the rumor mill - A Barometer Added, a Gold Colored iPad, New Macs and Launch of Yosemite. And that was it for solid yes's
Partial Yes's - were the 8MP rear camera, iOS 8.1 Released - or at least it was announced it would be released on Monday - and Wifi 802.11AC for the iPad Air 2 - only.
And then straight up misses - Anything to do with Apple TV - The Camera Sticking out the back of the iPad, Reversible USB Cable, Larger 12.9" iPad, New Beats Headphones, NFC for the iPad, Apple Pay launching this weekend and a New iPod Touch 6th gen.
So lets get this right - no new Apple TV and no new iPod Touch - It's Been Way Too Long - for what exactly?
VOICEMAIL - Rick_MD_FDVBK_802_no_issues
Rick - thanks for the feedback - for some with 8.0.2 there were no issues - but I had many others that had issues.
Here is what My recommendation is right now per updating.
iOS 8.1 comes out on the 20th - which is Monday. Wait - again don't be the first to update. I will release another episode later next week - that will go over next weeks Quarterly report - but likely will be a couple of days later. Also in that episode - I will go over any issues that came up with 8.1 - but with some luck - this might be - hopefully will be the release I say - yes update to - but again - NOT yet - let others be the test subjects. And I had others asking about iCloud drive and can they update to that - now that Yosemite is for OS Ten is out. I say wait a week - lets see how iOS 8.1 is - and then you will want to first update ALL of your iOS devices and Macs to the latest iOS 8.1 and Yosemite respectively - and then and only then turn on iCloud Drive. But again - please wait one more episode.
Then on the next episode we can finally start talking about iOS 8 features. I have been holding back on that - as well I did not want to give mixed messages.
once again - I will do a shout out to those that do like to jump in right away - and do update - let me know you favorite new features in iOS 8.1 next week and for those that turn on iCloud Drive - let me know your thoughts there as well. But again that is just for the BASE Jumping Adrenaline Junkies out there.

I guess I am getting a little obsessed with the whole GTAT disaster. And the more I read - the more it sounds like something in the fiction section of Audible. One of the more curious bits of info to come out is the COO of GT Advanced Technologies - A Mr. Daniel Squiller - sold nearly $2 Million in Company stock between when it looks like the first signs of trouble appeared and when GTAT filed for bankruptcy. Not Saying it was insider trader - but he was on the inside and he was trading and he started trading after it appears GTAT missed some milestones and Apple withheld a payment. He sold $1.2 Million in May and then another $750k between May and the September 9th announcement. Again not saying this was insider trading - just that he was on the inside and doing some trading - I am sure it was all on the up and up.
Looking at news of the Apple Payments - it does appear Issues were there early last year. Apple's loan of $578 Million was to be paid out in 4 different payments - but only after GTAT hit certain goals. The 3rd payment due in Feb was not made until April. And that final 139 Mil payment was originally due in April. The last payment then was supposed to be made in October - again based on GTAT meeting certain goals. That last payment was never made and those goals it now seems were not just not met - but likely could not be met by GTAT.
When you look at the dates for the goals - I think it becomes even clearer - Apple planned to have Sapphire on the iPhone 6 and 6+ this year.
What many are speculating now is that the big furnaces GTAT built specifically for Apple to get the larger size boules of Artificial Sapphire from which to cut out the screens - well they just were not producing high enough quality sapphire. And sadly they might never be able to.
https://www.kccllc.net/gtat/document/1411916141006000000000023

https://fortune.com/2014/10/11/apples-got-a-mess-on-
its-hands-in-mesa-arizona/
So what is Apple to do now - There really is no one else to turn to. Really at this point Apples only course of action - and I am not going to say best course of action - as there may not be a best course - is to hire all the employees they can from GTAT, Bring in a few other experts in the field of Crystal growth. and then look at the furnaces and see what can be done if anything to get them to produce the quality level of Sapphire they need.
Crystal growth is a large part Art - as much art as it is science - and usually a little more on the Art side.
I know my days working with Artificial Quartz - you really could have wild swings in quality - especially at the high end - from the same manufacturer.
I hope Apple does not just walk away - not if they think there is a chance they could get the quality and quantity they need. But then again - GTAT did more than just walk away - they put a noose around their own neck and kicked the horse.
I am guessing at this point Apple is saying forget what was sunk into this so far - what is it going to take to move forward with good Sapphire. And if that number does not make sense - I could see Apple just saying enough is enough - and sticking with Gorilla glass.
29:34
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-10-15/gt-
advanced-delays-hearing-on-sealed-documents-wind-down.html
But in the near term Apple has another issue to deal with - and that is the Bankruptcy papers and hearing GTAT will go through - and their explanation on what the heck happened - and part of that will be to go over their dealings with Apple - which Apple whom does not like anything public - especially contract terms with one supplier made available to their other suppliers.
It was also found out Apple has a $50 Million fine per infraction against GTAT - for each private detail they reveal. One current legal battle for GTAT right now is getting that term and other terms in their contract with Apple waived. Apple again is fighting that and has until the 20th to list specifically what details they want kept hidden in the Bankruptcy proceedings.
30:34
https://gigaom.com/2014/10/10/gtat-bankruptcy/
What is also interesting in the filing GTAT made is this quote quote GTAT believes it has many claims against Apple arising out of its relationship with Apple, unquote
Another is this quote “The [Apple] agreements imposed oppressive and burdensome terms and obligations on GTAT.” unquote
So I guess I need to ask GTAT's CEO - was it a 12 gage or a block? As in what type of Gun did Apple have pointed at your head that forced you to sign that agreement last year.
This sounds like major sour grapes from a company that clearly wanted to play ball with the big boys - and now is crying because they got hurt playing said ball with said big boys.
The Officers at GTAT will have a lot of explaining to do in the coming months. And hopefully in the next few months we will find out what really happened - because the GTAT collapse was not about Oppressive and burdensome Terms - it was more about how GTAT could not deliver what they promised - and finding out what they promised to deliver is the one big piece of info I am sure Apple does not want coming out.
31:48
http://www.cnet.com/news/why-the-iphone-6-isnt-
rocking-a-sapphire-crystal-display/
One last article this week on the Sapphire disaster - and it is an article from Sept 10th over on CNET - that tries to go over why no Sapphire this year.
Which I think missed that key possibility - GTAT was not up to the task when it came to Apples needs. Or as GTAT would say when it came to Apples oppressive and burdensome terms and obligations.

First - I want to say thanks and sorry for those I got with the Hey Siri bit on the last show - I had a few listeners say it did actually work on them and their phones sent the tweet. Including one listener Paul who wrote:
Hey Rob,
I was listening to your podcast this morning on my MacBook Pro while charging my iPhone 6 Plus, when half way through your podcast ep 323 (at 44:33) you commanded Siri to tweet "Go Royals" – and she did! https://twitter.com/kineticbranding
Funny, but I'm a Seattle Mariners fan.
Regards,
Paul in Bend, OR
Oooopps or he he . Thanks Paul and others again for being good sports about it. And Paul did send me a link to his tweet or is it my tweet - oh lets just call it our tweet.
But I did want to point out how someone with a Podcast could take control of you iOS device to send out a tweet. I guess this would be considered HeySiri Gate.
Hello Rob,
Just listened to your show and I expected to get a glowing review and go ahead to update to iOS 8. Instead I received a very nice recommendation from you to avoid iOS 8 if I wanted to keep Bluetooth connectivity while driving a car. Cheers Rob on the warning! My wife uses Bluetooth with her iPhone in her car and she would have been oh so upset if that stopped working.
I think I'll pass on this update and see what you say about 8.1. No software is perfect but I believe Apple will do better next time.
Another warning to share that may affect some of your listeners is with Words with Friends. It seems the built in chat feature is suffering a bug where some can't see their new chats that come in whole they are playing the game. They have to exit the game, force-quit it and then get back in the game to see them. Doing this multiple times would be a pain!
As of today I don't believe there is a fix but Zynga is working on it.
Staying with stable iOS 7,
Regards,
John D
Thanks for the feedback John - and hopefully ep 325 I can finally recommend iOS 8.1 to update to.

We are now well over 1,500 members in our Google+ community and growing.
Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.
One new popular post in the G+ community this past week came from -
Edgar Perez - he asked quote
Trying to explore all the features in my new iPhone 6. Currently struggling with M8 coprocessor. I cannot seem to easily find what apps use the motion processor. Seems like something Apple added that really is not a big win. What have you all tried or use that used the motion coprocessor. unquote
There was a great response from Mark Page who said
Unquote - The health app will record the number of steps and the miles you have walked/ran. You need to go to the health data and then click on All, scroll down to Steps and then toggle to Show on Dashboard.Do the same for Walking and Running Distance. unquote
Ken Lecomte and Jade Starr both suggested the app Lark, with Jade also mentioning Sleep Cycle, Withings, fit port and myfitnesspal.
Edgar the M7 and now M8 coprocessor are there to monitor motion data in the background even when the main processor is asleep - And more importantly when it is awake and working on something else. It is there to support the main processor by taking over the task of tracking motion data. Edgar thanks for posting that question.
- And this past week there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android bois free zone and spammer free zone. Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.
Folks Go to today in iOS dot com slash community to join in.
And thanks to all 1500+ of you already in the community and contributing.
Also from the G+ community was this post from Kelvin Brooks
quote
I believe I have found a fix for the iOS 8 wifi issue. I could not wifi sync since downloading iOS 8. I have since turned off "Handoff" which I think was causing the problem. When iOS 8.1 comes out I believe it will permanently fix this issue. unquote
Thanks Kelvin for the heads up on that. Yup - hope iOS 8.1 fixes that issue.

Some Sad news for all those that go or have gone to MacWorld - and that is MacWorld slash iWorld is going to sleep with the fishes. Or as they put it they are taking 2015 off - and going on hiatus - which is a nice way to say - it is over - don't call us - and here are all your records back.
There is an article over on the Loop - link in show notes for ep 324.
Since Apple pulled out of MacWorld - I really think this has been more of a when will it end - rather than will it end question - and now we know - 2014 is when it ended.
Again very sad news - to bad Apple could not support them more.

Ok - The Tii App is updated to version 2.0.2 - which makes it iOS 8.x compatible. This means you can now print the PDF about proper steps to update and also the PDF about battery saving tips - directly from your iOS 8 device.
So no need to email me for those PDF's anymore.
I did hear from about 3 or 4 listeners - that the last episode only - ep 323 - would play for about 1 minute and crash for them with the latest version. I saw this happen on one of my iOS device - I deleted the Tii App and re-installed - but that device was running iOS 7.1.2 - my Wifes iPad Mini 2 - but the rest it played fine.
If you have this issue - please email today in iOS at gmail dot com - and let me know - especially if after deleting and re-installing it does not fix the issue. Again it was only a few people reporting this issue and only for ep 323 - I did not do anything different from other episodes - but I did update iTunes between eps 322 and 323 - and I am wondering if that caused an issue.
That all said - The now Free Tii app version 2.0.2 is waiting for you - search for Tii in the app store. One thing you will see is the post for Bingo Card in there between eps 322 and 323. And if you go back further - you will see the PDF posts. Or if you tap on PDF in the episode list you can see them even easier.
I really like the new UI for the Tii App - especially in Car mode if you turn your iPhone sideways when playing an episode.
Again search for Tii in the iTunes app store to download for free - and make sure you accept Push Notification to get notices of when new episodes go live.

Hi Rob,
I have 1 unlimited grandfathered iPhone 5S and 2 iPhone 6 plus and 1 iPhone 5 on AT&T good service.
I was wondering when I get the iPad Air 2 should I get AT&T or go with T mobile?
I'm in Springfield MO 65803.
Which should I go with? Or Verizon? Sprint is out of the question. The iPhone's get I think 2gb of data except for mine unlimited. Any insight will be appreciated.

I have an iPhone 6 on iOS 8.0.2. I do not currently use a case.
Since I got the phone, the phone seems to register phantom touches. It is usually while I'm holding the phone, but it happens even after I put the phone down without having locked the screen.
By phantom touches I mean that apps open by themselves, keys on the keyboard type themselves, I involuntarily LIKE things on Facebook, etc..
In all of these cases I did not touch the screen. The phantom touches seem to be concentrated on the left side of the screen, at or below the half.
Is anyone else experiencing this phenomenon? What can I do to fix it?
Regards,
Air-ee
Thanks for the email - That is a strange one - I am not seeing that on the 6+ - but if anyone else is seeing this on the iPhone 6 - please let us know.
206-666-6364 - 206-Moon-Dog - or send an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com.
hey rob,
last year iOS 7.1 came out much later than iOS 7. Why is it this year that iOS 8.1 beta came out almost immediately after iOS 8? On macrumors they said Apple is expected to release 8.2,8.3...
Why not 8.0.x updates?
Regards,

Well I think 8.1 is earlier - not because of all the other issues / bugs with the first 3 version of iOS 8 - but rather to bring in support for Apple Pay and continuity with Yosemite. So there are those releases that were needed. Somewhere there will be a .X release also for support for Apple Watch. So we know at least by quote early 2015 unquote there will be at least a 8.2 update for our Apple watches.
Per what 8.3 would be or what would be between Apple Pay and Apple Watch - I am not sure. But yes definitely at least two major updates are needed.

I want to give a you some feedback on my experience unlocking my iPhone 5S from AT&T. As you know I moved to T-mobile when I purchased the iPhone 6+. Since I had the iPhone 5S less than two years - that meant early termination time for me. It worked out to an ETF of $242.63. Which T-mobile said they will cover me on.
So with the ETF paid and my account closed - I went to the link AT&T says to go to unlock the phone which is att.com/deviceunlock
and entered my info which include my old cell number, my IMEI Number and some other info. And submitted the form. A few hours later I received word back that I was not eligible to be unlocked because I had not completed my service Agreement - which I had and I had paid my ETF - so I was in good standings. I then called - 1-800-331-0500 - and was told the by the automated attendant to go online to request the unlock - so I asked to speak to a representative - and it acknowledged I was asking to speak to a rep about unlocking - and after waiting a few minutes a very helpful rep came on and helped me with the unlock - which I am told I will have the info I need on the 20th in an email to unlock it. Seems they needed to do it manually on their end. So just a heads up if you are trying to unlock an iPhone on AT&T - and are told no at the URL - you should call them and talk to a human.
Thanks AT&T and specifically Tan J for your help.
