TRANSCRIPT FOR EPISODE 418
Welcome to the show I am your host Rob and this is the Today in iOS podcast -
Sorry no music for this episode. I am all out of music created on an iOS device.
I want to thank JOHN for sending in the Artwork for today's show. JOHN wrote the following:
Hi, Rob.
Happy New Years, Rob.
This is an original photo of a winter sunset on the campus of UBC (University of British Columbia, Vancouver Canada) I took in Dec 2016 and added the logo/text using snapseed.
Regards,
John Poyser
Thanks JOHN, for sending in this artwork and folks you can see JOHN'S artwork in the FREE Tii App via the BONUS button for ep 418 - or at instagram.com/todayinios and also as a stand alone post in the VIP section and at Facebook.com/todayinios.
If you have some artwork and or music you have created on your iOS device that you would like to share with the audience please email it to me at today in iOS at gmail dot com and please make sure to include which app or apps you used to create said artwork and or music.
One thing I would love to do this year - is if you can get a picture of yourself in front of your local Apple store - Take that picture - put the Tii or Today in iOS branding on it - and also the City and state or Country on the artwork saying which apple store it is. I would like to kick that off starting in April with the 10 year anniversary of the show.
AND as I mentioned I am completely out of Music - so if you have some music you created on an iOS device - please send it in.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote -- quote
“Google glasses may look and seem absurd now but (Brian) Sozzi says they are “a product that is going to set the stage for many other interesting products.” For the moment, at least, the same cannot be said of iPhones or iPads. unquote
Jeff Macke, Yahoo! Breakout, 27 February 2013
Ouch - head spinning and about to explode with that level of complete wrongness in that quote.

1021-beta-to-developers-and-public-testers
If you remember back to Ep 416 - I mentioned a rumor from Sonny Dickson. He is known for getting Mechanical samples smuggled out of Apple production houses. Well he took his try on a rumor about Software and said iOS 10.3 beta would be released on Jan 10th - I was skeptical - and well the 10th came and went - and a week later - still no iOS 10.3 Beta.
But there was on Jan 9th iOS 10.2.1 Beta 3 and on Jan 12th - iOS 10.2.1 Beta 4.
Sonny - Stick with the hardware rumors - just sayin.
So what does iOS 10.2.1 beta 3 and beta 4 bring us - well exactly what we would expect - Bug fixes and optimization.
No new features I could find or see mentioned in any articles.
It is interesting to see Apple continue with the multi-beta releases in a week. Something they never did prior to iOS 10 - they now seem to be doing regularly.
If you are a dev or beta tester - as of Monday the 16th of Jan these are the beta’s available for you:
iOS 10.2.1 Beta 4 - released Jan 12th
Watch OS 3.1.3 Beta 2 - released Jan 9th.
tvOS 10.1.1 Beta 2 - Released Jan 9th.
But nope - no iOS 10.3 beta 1

finder_for_airpods_has_been_removed_from_the/
On the last episode near the end I talk briefly about an app called Finder for AirPods.
The app is supposed to help you find a lost AirPod - the dev sent me a promo code for the app - and I downloaded it but had not had a chance to test it out prior to recording the last episode - well right after the last episode came out - the App got yanked from the app store. I was skeptical at best of the app being able to work - and evidently Apple felt there was an issue.
I had said on the show - I would hide an AirPod in my house and see if I could get my kids to find it.
After it was yanked - I figured not much use in testing - but what the heck - I will test it and be able to validate that the app was bogus and did not work and Apple did the right thing by yanking it. Yes - I am coming from a biased or highly skeptical point of view.
I took one AirPod - and placed it in an impossible to see location walking around. I then gave the iPhone to my 10 year old son Henry - and said Ok - the AirPod is somewhere on the first level of the house - they had 5 rooms it could have been in - I then said go find it with this app. I explained that the level bar shows how much signal there is - and the more of the level bar the closer you are.
I sent him on his way. I fully expected him to be at least 15 to 20 minutes before he gave up - giving me some time to catch up on emails - Not that I thought I was sending him on a wild goose chase or anything. 3 minutes later he found it.
I was surprised - especially where I had placed it - no way to find it with out the app in that amount of time.
I then re-hid it - and gave the iPhone to my Wife - told her what I told Henry - and off she went - and Less than 3 minutes later she found it as well. My wife is sooooo un-techie - if she could find it - anyone could find it. No offense honey.
To the dev - Kudos.
Now the app is not perfect - it will not find the AirPods in the Case - so if you loose both and the case -or just the case - you are SOL.
But if you loose one of the AirPods - you place it down or it falls in the cushions of a chair or sofa or more likely - you leave it in your coat or pants pocket - this app does - or should I say did actually work.
Sadly - Apple has removed it from the App store.
The App again is Finder for AirPods - and is currently not in the App store.
I have an email into the Dev asking for an update on the Apps status - And he replied and said - Quote Unfortunately the app will not be returning back in the App Store with no chance of it being approved again. unquote
Anyone from Apple listening - Booooo - put the app back.
If you are one of the lucky ones that downloaded it - kudos to you. Hold on to it and don’t delete it. Again not perfect - but actually useful.

http://www.redmondpie.com/64gb-apple-tv-
might-have-a-use-after-all/
When the 4th gen Apple TV came out there were two versions 32GB and 64 GB - I said at the time - GET THE 64 GB - I received a little flack from a few saying it was a waste of money - no need for the higher storage.
Well - Apple just changed things - before where apps for Apple TV were limited to just 200 MB - Apple will now allow for apps up to a new limit of 4GB. Or you know just 8 of those app for the 32 GB unit vs 16 for the 64 GB version.
Ok - Granted most and almost none will be at the 4GB size - but eventually some will start pushing up that high - and really - it will not take many multi GB apps to fill up your device - at least with the 64 GB version it will take twice as many.
So for all those that purchased the 64 GB versions - you can now rest assured you purchased the right version for the future.
The biggest benefit of these app size changes will be in the speed of the App UI - currently with the 200 MB limit - it required the app to download extra elements if they wanted to offer more of an immersive experience. Some of those downloads took quite a bit of time depending on their size and your connection speed. I had a couple I just quit playing altogether as it was not worth the wait - now - they will be able to bundle that all together in the app - and no more delays waiting for assets to download - assuming they can fit it all in 4GB. If not - then You can host up to 20GB of additional content on the App store for download as needed. But at least you now get 3.8 GB more downloaded in the app to start with.
Easy prediction here - Next Gen Apple TV’s with 128 GB of storage and maybe even 256 GB of storage. Coming this fall.

http://appleinsider.com/articles/17/01/12/apple-
was-working-on-airpods-since-at-least-2015-patent-filing-shows
This next story backs up what I have said for years. When ever you see an Apple Patent story for something Apple has not released - chances are they will not be releasing it. Because this next one is about a patent filing from Apple from June 2015 that was just released and you know what it was - it was the Apple AirPods and Case.
This is for Apples Application for quote wireless audio output devices unquote and it describes how two untethered AirPods communicate with each other, their carrying case and the device supplying the audio content - such as an iPhone or Apple Watch.
The diagrams from two years are go - are spot on the AirPods and case. And again it goes back to show when Apple is going to release a product it patents - it waits until it is released for the patents to come out.
Keep that in mind every time you see a story about a folding iPhone is coming because Apple has a patent for one.
The interesting thing to me - was how spot on the details in the patent application were to the finished product. Again take rumors about unreleased apple product based on Patents with a huge huge grain of salt.

https://9to5mac.com/2017/01/11/ios-market-share-kantar/
Speaking of taking things with a huge grain of salt - Kantar Has some data on Market share for Smartphones - for the 3 months ending November last year. I say take this with a huge grain of salt - because Apple has yet to release numbers for last quarter which includes October and November - 2 of the 3 months for this report.
So what did Kantar find or report to have found.
Well year over year - iOS went from 37.1% to 43.5% of market share. Windows Phone dropped from 2.3 to 0.8% - and Android dropped from 60.4% to 55.3%.
Kantar looked at 10 different markets. In 8 of the 10 iOS devices increased Market share from the year before. Only in China and Germany did their Market share go down. In China it was the biggest drop from 25.3% for Sep to Nov 2015 to 19.9% for the same period in 2016.
The Markets iOS went up were - UK, France, Italy, Spain, US, Australia, Japan and EU5.
The biggest increase was in the UK going from 39.2% to 48.3%
Windows Phone had a decline in 9 of the 10 markets - only in Japan where it went from 0.3 to 0.4% was there any increase. Its biggest drop was in the UK where it dropped from 9.1% to 2.1%
From Kantar was this interesting quote.
iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPhone 6s were the three most popular smartphones in the US at the beginning of the holiday period, for a combined 31.3% share. The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge were the fourth and fifth best-selling phones in the US, with Samsung capturing 28.9% of smartphone sales.
Obviously if the Note 7 had not gone up in flames - it does look like Samsung would have out paced Apple in the US market. Either that or those that were going to get a Note 7 - just goes the S7 or S7 edge instead.
In any case - these are all just numbers guessed at by Kantar.
15:51
http://www.macrumors.com/2017/01/11/
airpods-slice-intelligence-data/
And speaking of Guessed out numbers - here is a new set of data.
This data was guessed at by Slice and has to do with the Wireless Headphone Market - Yes someone tracks that.
And here is what Slice found - In December in the US - an estimated 75% of revenue from Headphones sold online came from Wireless models - up from 50% in December 2015.
Apples AirPods are estimated to have captured 26% share of the online Revenue. Because you know - Apple reports thats directly to Slice. Or not.
The AirPods stole the top spot from Beats - but don’t feel sorry for Beats - remember they are owned by Apple. I am saying that to myself - I keep forgetting that.
Beats had 15.4% of the revenue for Dec 2016 down from 24.1% in December 2015.
Combined Apple had 41.4% of the revenue for Wireless headphones.
Slice said their research shows that 85% of those purchasing AirPods were male - see ep 417 and my wife’s comments on what she thinks of my AirPods.
As always remember - Slice gets their data by looking at email receipts from up to 353,000 US online shoppers - And Apple gets their data from actual sales.
It will be interesting if Apple gives any real numbers on AirPods in their quarterly call - AirPods will fall under their hodge podge category - lumped in with Apple Watches and accessories and Beats and Apple Pens and Dongles - lots and lots of dongles.

Hi Rob,
Since someone asked on the last show and since I couldn't wait when the game came...Here's the situation on sharing Mario Run below, essentially you can't share in-app purchases with family sharing (see link Apple sent below). It sounds like if you're sharing the same Apple ID then having Mario Run on multiple devices won't be a problem.
Regards
Eric
Schertz, Tx
From Apple quote
Please allow me to explain why you were charged for the same item. I would like to share with you that In-App purchases are not shareable in Family Sharing. You can share the main application to your family members but not the contents inside the application. For more information what types of contents you can share in Family Sharing, see this page:

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.
We are going to get a little soap boxy here for the next few minutes.
One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode was from Myron Uecker who wrote the following in reference to an article titled - Apple’s Activation Lock is Bogus :
quote
This person is an idiot! Activation Lock was one of Apple's better additions to iOS because it greatly reduces the value of a stolen device. It could be improved, but mainly in the form of helping police track down stolen devices by requiring the passcode to power off a device, or allowing the device to connect to any available hotspot or wireless network to share its location.
Just because a few people sold a device and forgot to unlock it, or a few people forgot their pass codes, doesn't justify removing a feature that protects your data and reduces the value of your stolen device. I got a phone back a year after it was stolen because the thief couldn't use it.
Apple’s Activation Lock is Bogus - CWL

unquote
This article Myron referenced is not just bad it is irresponsible. The author basically tries to say Activation lock is a conspiracy by Apple to make more money.
Apple Dystopia replied
quote
I'm actually in the process of writing an article about Activation Lock. It can be bypassed, but not everyone can do it. There are services that do it for $150. That said, it has dramatically reduced iPhone theft. After all, thieves are losing $150 in resale value if they unlock it, and they could be caught in the process. Specifically, my article focuses on how to verify that a used iPhone isn't stolen.
In the first year of Activation Lock, it reduced iPhone theft in NYC by 25%, SF by 40% and London by 50%. It's not just theft. People get beaten, and even murdered over their iPhone. It has literally saved lives.
It's really poorly written too. The author is a multi-faceted idiot..
unquote
I put this in his comments :
Quote
"Claiming that Activation lock is is Disingenous - shows a complete lack of understanding of the History of the iPhone and the issue of "Apple Picking" - and the calls of Police Chief's calling on Apple - Begging Apple to implement Activation Lock. Prior to Activation lock - Crime in NY City had rissen almost exclusively due to "Apple Picking". This article completely ignores history and the realities of the world. People actually died getting mugged for their iPhones. Those stories are history. Do the responsible thing - and delete this article. Rob - Host of the Today in iOS Podcast"
unquote
The author of that article replied to me and said
quote
Rob, respectfully, you're wrong. Those of us in affluent countries can't see the forest for the trees (more on that later). While the statistics may show (something like 19% in the first year) that activation lock caused a drop in iPhone theft, it does not stop theft of all Apple devices mainly because they're status symbols. 19% is a drop in the bucket. But, do you know how many devices are out there, bricked but not stolen or otherwise illicit? No, you probably don't (if that data out there, I'd like to know). I'm highlighting a problem I think few talk about and - again - in rich countries, ever see. Apple knows though, their massive profit says so.
unquote
I love that he Chides me for not knowing how many Bricked devices are out there - and then says he love to know that answer too. That is like him saying - Your so dumb you don’t even know the answer to Hilbert’s 15th or 16th problems.
I replied back
quote
Kevin Costain You are respectively not just wrong your are being irresponsible with your article. According to Reuters iPhone theft dropped 50% in London, 40% in San Francisco, 25% in New York City. That based on the 12 months following the introduction of Activation lock with iOS 7. Your argument about sellers "Forgetting" about activation lock is laughable at best. The data shows that theft of iPhones has been greatly reduced thanks in large part to Activation lock. No longer do you need to hide your iPhone in public in most cities. Kids are not getting dragged to their death or people pushed down stairs to their death as robbers try to abscond with their iPhones. Your article basically is saying - it sucks to buy a stollen iPhone on the grey market - yes - in that case I agree - but maybe buyers need to make sure the device is one they can activate prior to paying the money - or set up a 3rd party to hold the money to resolve any disputes. But to Say Activation lock is a conspiracy by Apple to make more money - I am sorry but respectfully - you need to take down this article. That is just crazy talk. Plus Government regulations around the world now require Activation lock or kill switches. So No - Apple will never remove Activation lock - NOR SHOULD THEY.

Apple for the 3rd year in a row has been declared the most Environmentally friendly Tech company in the world - according to Greenpeace.
Apple received a Final Grade of an A - with a clean Energy Index score of 83%
Google and Facebook - also received A grades - with Clean energy scores of 56 and 67% respectively. I guess they grade on a curve.
Adobe Received a B.
Amazon, HP and IBM - received C’s
Alibaba - got a D
And BaiDu - received an F
These grades were based on how the companies data centers were being run.
This report was not about Products Apple sells.

10th-anniversary-iphone/
Since the last Episode - The iPhone had its 10th anniversary - sorta - It was the 10th Anniversary of when Steve Jobs was up on Stage at Mac World Jan 9th 2007 - and introduced the iPhone to the world. The Real 10 year anniversary will be the end of June - when it actually made it to our hands.
There were a lot of articles talking about how the iPhone changed the world in the last 10 years - but sadly the biggest change the iPhone introduced - And I only say Sadly - because it was needed then and is still an issue for some - was where Apple introduced a device not touched by the carrier. It was the first time a smartphone was introduced that the UI was not influenced or controlled by the Carrier. That was the big thing - that and the touch interface.
Today sadly - many smartphones still have carrier bloatware - but not iPhones.
If you want a fun listen - go back and listen to the early episode of what was then Today in iPhone - Those episodes from April 2007 to June 2007 - prior to the iPhone launching. While not everyone was convinced the iPhone would succeed - I think you will see one podcast host and a bunch of listeners in those early days that were pretty convinced of its success. You will also hear me that spring and summer of 2007 - calling for Apple to allow for native apps.
$60 Billion dollars to devs later - I think that was the right call.
Of course Tim Cook does not really want to look back as much as look forward - he states the best is yet to come. Well actually Tim Cook said quote
“iPhone is an essential part of our customers’ lives, and today more than ever it is redefining the way we communicate, entertain, work and live, iPhone set the standard for mobile computing in its first decade and we are just getting started. The best is yet to come.”

The next 10 years should be very interesting to see where the iPhone goes.

5-inch-ipad-pro-mathematical-argument/
One of the rumors for the iPads - is a new Smaller iPad Pro vs the 12.9 inch size - but bigger vs the 9.7 inch size. The new size would be 10.5” and would be edge to edge. Those reporting this rumor - say it makes sense - because if you go to this size and use the same amount of pixels - the pixel density works out to what the pixel density of the iPad Mini is.
It seems multiple rumors are out there about the next iPad Pro being in that 10.1 to 10.9 range. This to go along with an updated 12.9 Inch iPad Pro.
And yes - there would still be a 9.7 iPad Air.
Rumors are still pointing to a Q2 revamp of the iPad Line.
They are saying the 12.9 and 10. something designs would have the A10X chip - while the 9.7 iPad air would have the A9 chip.
So far I have not seen any quote leaked unquote photos of the 10 point something size iPad with edge to edge screen. This makes me very very skeptical of these rumors.
on the iPhone next gen front - there were a bunch of reports out about the bezel of the next iPhone - those reports go back to Digitimes - and hence no link is included - as Digitimes rumors that start with digitizes are pretty much always wrong.

http://loupventures.com/our-expectations-for-iphone-x/
Speaking of almost always wrong - there is Uncle Gene Munster - who just came out with a whole months worth of how wrong were they predictions.
He has this to say about the next iPhone.
quote
A word on the name: We expect the next iPhone to have a new design. Apple will likely break from it’s historical naming convention and call this iPhone something other than iPhone 7S or iPhone 8 because it will be the 10th anniversary iPhone. Like they did with the 10th version of the Mac OS, it seems logical that they’ll call the next iPhone: iPhone X.
We expect iPhone X to feature:
- - An OLED screen
- - Wireless charging (a step they’ve already taken with Apple Watch)
- - Dual lens camera systems on both the smaller- and larger-screen models
- - A (possibly dedicated) processor capable of 3D modeling and real-time 3D image processing
- - More sophisticated proximity sensors
- - The iPhone X may be the iPhone model we’ve discussed that removes the home button, using haptic feed back for button presses on the display itself for home button functions. This would enable an edge-to-edge display for an iPhone without a bezel.
With iPhone X, we see Apple doubling down on AR and extending it’s lead among AR-capable devices.
unquote
Some of these rumors / many - we covered on the last episode.
But Uncle Gene seems to have moved his past obsession with a full size Apple TV - to an Apple AR solution.
I have heard the iPhone X rumor before - I think People think Apple is more obsessed with numbers than they are. I don’t see them skipping iPhone 8 and iPhone 9. I really don’t even see them skipping iPhone 7S and 7S+ at this point.

Hey Rob, long time listener...
Question: I'm pretty sure you've mentioned that I can download one of your podcasts to my iPhone, which, in turn, appears to copy it to my Apple Watch 2. So I wanted to try to listen to a podcast independently from my iPhone, like taking a walk while leaving the phone at home. Except, I can't for the life of me figure out how to play it directly off the watch. It seems I can't make the watch the source of the podcast. Do you have a link you can send me on the how to? By the way, I'm loving my new wireless earbuds, they work great!
Regards,
Steve

Hi George and Steve,
I have been remiss in explaining this before.
First you need to download the episode on the phone.
Once that is done, go to the detail page for the episode. On the detail page, there should be a watch icon within the download button. Press the watch icon in the download button to upload the downloaded episode to the watch. This can take some time to transfer, I found that the transfer happens quicker if the watch is charging. Also you need to tap exactly on the Watch iCon - if you miss it will ask if you want to delete the downloaded file.
Once the file has transferred to the watch (the watch icon will show as a solid black icon), you can play the episode on the watch by doing a force press and selecting "Change Playlist" and choose the "Watch Playback" list. The watch will now show all episodes that have been uploaded to the watch and can be played without the phone.
Thanks for listening to the show

Hi Rob,
Hmm, this is interesting. Just iMessaged a friend about the movie Rogue One. After I sent the message, I saw the words Rogue One were underlined. Tapping on the "link" brought up info on the movie. I didn't know iMessage would do that!
BTW, thanks for "airing" my piece about using generic shopping baspgs instead of Apple s"patented" bags.
Regards,
Steven

secure-your-airpods-no-strings-attached?ref=nav_search
For kickstarter this week we have a project called - AirHooks.
Quote - A simple way to secure your Apple AirPods in your ears. No Strings needed.
These are reverse hooks with a place to put your AirPods through.
I am going to say this - my AirPods have not fallen out. Every single time they have come out of my ears it was because I was pulling them out. Not one time have they fallen out.
That said - if you are really worried about this - then check out the AirHooks kickstarter project.
You have about 20 days to back this. Pricing on this one is about $18 for one set.
They say this will ship in March 2017 - but only if they hit their goal of $12,000 - of which they have raised $86 dollars so far - not $86k - just $86 dollars as in 4 Twenty dollar bills - and 3 two dollar bills.
Search for AirHooks in Kickstarter dot com or in the show notes in Ep 418 at today in iOS dot com.

Or you know you could just plug in your lightening cable to them.
Actually $12 is not a bad price at all - and it looks nice.

Some not supported - Comcast, Verizon, Google Fiber, And TimeWarner Cable / Spectrum.
Yeah - so not missing much.
Come On Eddie - get those agreements going.
On the App side - ABC and NBC are supported - but no CBS, and NO Netflix.
But ESPN and Watch ESPN Apps both just gained support.
There are other apps supported as well.
But still lots more work on Apples side to get this really rolled out in the US.
