Episode 236 Transcript
-----------------------
So a quick update on the Apple v Samsung case - Both Apple and Samsung have now presented their case. In between Apples part and Samsungs part the Court paused to Hear Samsung Argue that Apple failed to meet its legal burden and that the case should be stopped. Judge Lucy Koh said ummmm No - After which Samsung then had to present their case. Which they did this past week. Judge Koh did during the week lay into to Apple for a briefing they presented that was far from Brief - asking Apple lawyers if they were smoking crack for presenting such a long brief. For Apples part the lawyers did assure the judge they were in fact not smoking crack. Judge Koh did set closing arguments for Tuesday ensuring the jury will start debating among themselves if Samsung is not just a copiest but also a patent infringer. In a similar type case between Oracle and Google earlier this year that jury took about a week to reach a verdict. So sadly that may mean it is two more episodes before this is all behind us.
Well Here is some Audio from the Conan Obrien show about this case. Which by the way is when you know you made big when you are a skit on late night TV.
Ok switching gears to well something more interesting. There will be lots of reports between now and Sept 12th of Apple or one of their carriers dropping the price of the iPhone 4S - and All I can say is don't bite. Stay the course and wait for the iPhone 2012 to be released. Now is not the time to buy a new iPhone - regardless of the price reduction. Try restoring your old iPhone to factory settings if it is acting up and only re-install those apps you absolutely need. Do what you need to do - but hold off until Sep 12th - until you see what the iPhone 2012 really looks like and what new features it offers. If you really feel the need for a new iPhone or smartphone now - maybe find a doctor that could put you in a medically induced coma until the 12th. Do what you gotta do - but don't buy a new iPhone now - you want to wait.
Hi Rob,
The app the person was asking for about in ep 235 to allow direct TV to play on a jailbroken device is called X Con. It is free on the Cydia store Regards,
Steve from Arizona
Hi Rob,
I just listened to ep 235. I'm not sure what version of OSX the person was running, If he can upgrade to 10.8 Mountain Lion. The Notes app built in to OS 10.8 synchronizes with IOS.

Delmaurio W
Hi Rob,
For those listeners interested in Straight Talk, the iPhone does NOT have to be unlocked. All one needs is ST's sim card and the plan's service pin each month. The sim card is a one time charge.
I've used ST off and on for a few months and it works perfectly with my locked iPhone 4.
Regards,
Harold
Harold - thanks for the heads up - If anyone else was able to get their iPhone that is not unlocked to work on Straight talk - please let me know - 206-666-6364
We have talked about Apples Podcasts app a few times with air quotes around few. And we will talk about it a bunch more no doubt. But it seems Apple this past week was trying to stack the deck in its own favor by well eliminating the competition. So to speak that is. What Apple did is when you searched for the word podcasts - there came up just a single app in the results in iTunes. And it was of course just their Podcasts App that showed up. Now things are back to normal - and a search for Podcasts in iTunes gives you many different apps - but with Apples Podcasts App in the first position - of course. Hey Apple - Hey Apple - Here is a thought put the time an effort you spent on rigging the search results into you know improving the app. So Not kosher on the rigged search results - just sayin.
I think at this point when it comes to the iPhone 2012 - The thought of the iPhone 2012 coming with a new smaller dock connector that does not work with any of your accessories or cords - well yeah - that sadly seems like a forgone conclusion at this point. So much so is it a forgone conclusion that the debate really is on how many pins for the connector. Initially it was reported as it being a 19 pin connector. But now the 9 pin connector rumor camp seems to be the ones making the most noise. Part of the back up for the 9 pin connector comes from iOS 6 Beta software where there is a reference to quote copy device supports 9 pin unquote all one word - that was found in the code. You know what spec requires 9 pins as well - USB 3.0 - that requires 9 pins. There are also some rumored photos showing up of an 8 pin connector - well 8 pins on the connector plus the grounding of the connector make 9. The best of the articles I came across on this comes from Gizmodo. Look for the article titled - Next iPhone's Rumored Foolproof Dock Connector - in the show notes for Ep 236 over at today in iOS dot com. If this is the connector apple goes with it will be a big improvement vs the 30 pin from a connection / reliability perspective. But it will still suck that none of my accessories will be compatible - and will likely be the main reason I am not even thinking of updating to the iPhone 2012. Well that and the fact I am nowhere even close to eligible for an upgrade.
Hi Rob,
With more leaked New iPhone parts from china today pointing to a launch soon, but if a new iPad mini is coming out at the same time would we not be seeing leaked parts for that too
My guess would be that there is no iPad mini in the pipeline - not for the sept launch anyway.
This happened last year with loads of leaked parts appearing for the 4s on the run up to the launch and no 'iPhone 5' parts. The various rumour websites were still saying there would be an iPhone 5 to accompany the 4s, but we now know this did not arrive
Just my opinion
Regards,
Chris Gough Nottingham, England
Hi Chris,
Actually there have been some photos of supposed iPad mini parts including a the back casing and just recently the bottom connector and head phone jack - but you are correct it is no where near what we are seeing the iPhone 2012. I would agree it will not launch on Sept 21st - when the iPhone 2012 is supposed to be launching - I would guess the iPad mini - if announced on Sept 12th - which does seem to be likely now - well the iPad mini would not likely start shipping until at least a month after the iPhone 2012. And maybe not even until after the US election. Apple may want to move out the iPad mini shipping until about 2 weeks after the election so as not to be over shadowed by all the election talk in the US. But that is just my guess.
Per the iPad mini and what it will look like - the general thought is a mix between the iPad and iPod touch. The supposed pictures of the iPad mini dock and head phone connectors - show not only would it have the new 9 pin dock connector - but that it would also have the head phone jack at the bottom the iPad mini. Just like with the iPod touch. Also the guess is that the screen would be closer to the side of the case than with the iPad. Essentially the rumors are that the iPad mini is not a 7" screen but a 7.8" screen - so a bigger screen than the Nexus and Kindle fire - but physically about the same size for the unit dimensions.
Assume it will be much lighter than the iPad - and also much thinner - but battery life comparable to the iPad. Over all it will be a Nexus / Kindle Fire killer - at a price of around $299 or $249.
Thanks to Jim M - for this next one. Which goes over some tests done on iOS 6 show that it does scale to 640 x 1136 - giving more fuel to the large iPhone 2012 rumors. Essentially using the a developer tool called iOS simulator and setting a resolution of 640 x 1136 - with iOS 6 beta - it allowed for 5 rows of apps above the tray vs just 4 rows of apps above the tray when a similar test was done on iOS 5.1.
So essentially this builds on the rumor of a 4 inch screen for the iPhone 2012 one that is longer and a little wider - with a 16 x 9 aspect ratio. And that the iPhone 2012 would be the same width as the iPhone 4S.
Add to that the loss of the Youtube App - bluetooth file sharing and no need to put in passwords for free app downloads - we are starting to see a better picture of what iOS 6 will support and do that was not talked about on stage by Apple in June.
Into the email bag.
Hi Rob, Will next iPhone be called iPhone 4G, iPhone 5, iPhone 6, all new iPhone or something else? Best guess?Regards,
Mike
Hi Mike
100% it will NOT be CALLED the iPhone 5 - Anyone calling it the iPhone 5 is clueless and should not be trusted.
100% it will NOT be the iPhone 4G - see Australia and lawsuit there.
iPhone 6 - hmmm - maybe - as it actually will be the 6th iPhone - which is why it will not be the iPhone 5. But not very likely it will be called the iPhone 6 either.
I think the 6th iPhone - the iPhone 2012 as I call it now - will most likely just be called the new iPhone
And all these numbers and letters will go away.
Just like the Mac Book Pro is the Mac Book Pro and not the Mac Book Pro 9

Hey Rob,
Just wanted to send in my review of the Parker Planner app. Its been out for a couple months but just recently dropped to 99 cents so I finally got it. I really like it so far because it combines a planner page with a notes feature and todo list. I think this makes planning from my ipod much easier because I don't have to constantly switch between the cal app and my todo app. The app still needs a little work before it perfect, the todo feature is good but doesn't seem to be fully flushed out yet so I am hoping that will get better with future updates that will add alarms and sorting features. Anyway its a good calendar app that will use any calendar that is synched with you iphone, but gives you the ability to control which ones will display. Hope some of your listeners will check it out.
regards,
Ben
Hi Rob,
This is Paul from Mississippi. I have wanted to do an review of some of the Kickstarter things I have backed around 20 of them and all iPhone and iPad related.
Here are two the LilyPad iPad case now called the Kudo iPad case and the EscapeCapsule waterproof iPhone case.
The LilyPad iPad case did not work but the maker did a great thing a replaced all of them with the new Kudo case that does work. This was $165. Funded oct 2011 shipped around Jan 2012 then replaced around April 2012
The EscapeCapsule waterproof iPhone case. I got the Kickstarter only edition “Green and glow-in-the-dark” for $80. This was one of my first things to back on Kickstarter Funded Sept 2011 shipped around june 2012 a very long wait. In that time lots of new waterproof iPhone cases came to market. This is a nice case but not as good as some others out there. (side note mine is on eBay) The glow-in-the-dark is not to good. You can’t charge the phone in the case. The case just does not fit like you would think it should.
Regards,
Paul
Hi Rob,
Here is a Kickstarter project that looks cool.... i have no affiliation. It is called the HumanToolz Stand for iPad 3 with Humantoolz being one word with a Z at the end not an s Regards, -- Scott L
Hi Scott thanks for the heads up on this Kickstarter project which is an iPad stand. It does look cool but sadly at just $12.7 k in funding and only 21 days to go to get to a goal of $80k - unless these guys get on a big marketing / social media push - this one is likely not going to get funded.
If you are looking for a good looking and functional stand for your iPad 3rd gen - to you know go along with probably a few others you already have - search for Humantoolz Stand in kickstarter or look for the links in the show notes for ep 236 over at today in iOS dot com.
Thanks to Mark H for this next one - which is for all the Craigslist users and eHarmony and match.com users - it is the burner App - that lets you set up temporary phone numbers - that expire after 7 days during which time you get up to 20 minutes of talk and 60 texts. The owners claim this is not for nepharous use - but I can't imagine they would say other wise - after all they are not going to say if you are Dominatrix you could use this service. Nope they claim this is for those that use craigs list and dating sites that don't want to give out their permeant number. Clearly this is not for Johns that are in a town for a week on business and are looking for a call back from a pimp. Or at least the owners would say it is not for that. Any way the App is called the Burner app and it costs $1.99 per each new temp number. Expect to see this as a plot line in an upcoming law and order SVU episode.
Hey if you are listening to this prior to August 20th - then there is a free app called Silent Film Director - which does as the name implies. Search for Silent Film Director 3 words in iTunes and get it while it is free.
Hi rob i have a question for you is it possible to take my Verizon iPhone 4 and use it as a prepaid iPhone on straigt talk. This iphone dosnt have a slot to insert a prepaid SIM card so i was wondering do u no if its possible to make it prepaid
Regards,
No name - no sim card.
Well NNNSC - Nope you can not take that iPhone 4 for Verizon and move it to Straight talk - because it is a CDMA phone - Straightalk is a GSM carrier - or technically a MVNO using the GSM network of AT&T.
Back to the email bag,
Hi Rob
I have a windshield-mounted dock (TomTom) and when it gets hot, sometimes my iPhone will shut off due to temperature unless I run the defroster to cool it off. It usually comes without warning, but I've found a warning sign. If you have less than 100% on the battery and it is showing the "plugged in" icon (battery with plug) instead of the "charging" icon (battery with lightning bolt), it is getting too hot. Hope this helps other dashboard iPhoners and fellow Wazers (users of the Waze app, a great app). Regards,
Lou V
Hi Rob,
Just a heads up - Best buy now has star wars cases for iPhones.
Regards,
Levi.
Hi Rob,
Thought your listeners might be interested in Square's pricing structure change given the recent user reviews you've had on your show.
Looks more affordable!
No More Swipe Fees For Small Businesses Using Square Payment Processing
Regards, Erik
Hi Erik,
Thanks for the heads up. Here are some interesting items about this change quote Small businesses who make less than $250,000 per year will no longer have to pay the standard 2.75 percent per swipe processing fee (though they can still opt for this) if they pay one flat rate currently set at $275 monthly.
Square has also dropped transaction limits for new users. Before the change, Square held funds over for new users who brought in over $1000 in a week. This is no longer the case; all new businesses that use Square’s mobile card reader for Android or iOS will have all of their funds available in their bank account by the followingbusiness day. unquote.
Not sure how this compares to others out there - but it does look like Square realized they were loosing some small business folks.
Ok - Apple TV rumor time - or really iTV rumor or is it Apple Console TV rumors. Well you know the rumors about a big 40" or so TV from Apple. And in this case rumor is probably being generous as this is coming from an Anal-ist - Pete Misek from Jefferies and CO to be specific. He said the following in a research note this past week.
Quote We believe the iTV is in full production. Recent data out of Sharp, Hon Hai, and other specialty chemical and TV component suppliers support this. Also, JDSU noted that they have a new non-gaming customer for its gesture control modules. They indicated this is a new "living room" based customer. We believe Apple will leverage AT&T's and Verizon's content deals for the iTV. Additionally, the WSJ's sources indicate Apple may also consider a set-top box version for the cable operators. unquote
Misek is apparently already modeling for 2 million iTV's to be sold in this calendar year - those 2 million units would be selling with an average sales price of $1,250. Ummmm Yeah - 2 Million iTV's sold at $1,250 by the end of the year for a product not rumored about by any of the sites known for apple leaks - a product not announced - a product that replaces something you replace oh once a decade if at that rate. Yeah that product will sell 2 million units at $1,250 a unit - Well looks like we found out who was smoking that Crack the Judge Koh claimed was an Apple Lawyer. Nope it was just an Analyst covering Apple.
This past week the Wallstreet journal had a couple of articles talking about apple and its TV plans. Or more specifically its Cable TV plans and possibly coming up with a set top box to supply to Cable operators. Yes - that really really attractive Set top box business the one with really low margins.
It seems One Anal-ist Rich Tullo from Alfred Fried & Co. suggest that apple just buy TiVo and they could easily do so for just about 2 billion dollars. The argument being that if Apple wants to be in the set top box business the fastest way there is via TiVo. But given Apples history of acquisitions - a 2 Billion dollar Acquisition would be 5 times larger than their largest ever. Just does not seem likely.
I am not saying I would not like to see Apple acquire Tivio and bring that tech to their other products As I definitely would like to see that I am just saying that I do not see it likely to happen - given Apples very conservative nature in acquisitions.
Back to the email bag.
Hi Rob,
Wanted to let you know of something I came across. It is called AirParrot which you can find at air parrot dot com.
For people with older Macs like mine. I have a 2008 15" MacBook PRO
and a HP Windows 7 PC that this works on.
Trial only lasts 20 minutes but it is only $10.00 for the full version.
It lets your PC or older MAC use your Apple TV to Mirror your screen to your Big TV. regards,
ÐaVîd
Thanks david for the heads up on Airparrot.
Hi Rob,
Figure you've already heard of the guy
That got hacked. Laptop/iPhone/iPad.
Saw his data diss spearing before his eyes!
I just listened to this weeks "on the media" podcast in which it was the ending story.
Mike R
Texas Trucker
Hi Mike,
Yup - he was on TWiT 2 weeks ago.
And they talked about it on Mac OS Ken early this week.
As I see it - this is not an issue with iOS or iCloud.
But rather about a determined hacker that went way above and beyond to get access to a users account and errors by the end user in how he had his passwords set and issues with Amazon and Apple on allowing resets over the phone and in Amazon's case allowing the addition of an email account over the phone.
At the end of the day - this is not something that would effect even the smallest % of regular users.
Hence why I have not reported on this story - I don't think it is a story - in as far as this is something any listeners need to worry about. It is like people being afraid of sharks - when it is cows that kill 27 times more people in the US each year than sharks.
The more important thing here is to make sure you have different passwords for different accounts and your most secure account is where you send password resets to for the other accounts.
It is funny how much press that quote unquote story received. Which is almost as funny as how little press a story about Android Malware tends to get. Russian Security firm - Kaspersky lab just reported on their Q2 findings and they claim the number of new Mal ware programs targeting Android has almost tripled in Q2 of 2012. With over 14,900 new programs with Mal ware were added into their database - that means those are just the ones they found out about.
This vs quote just unquote 5,441 in Q1. Ouch fun to be on Android.
I think what is most telling is not the total number of programs with Mal ware but that Kaspersky says in the future these programs will be more effective and more targeted on Android to steal users money - via getting your financial records and credit card numbers.
Open is good again how?
iOS is not without some security issues. Ad Pod2G made news this week calling out Apple about security issues with SMS. Where essentially hackers could send you a text message where the ID of where the text message is coming from is spoofed. Ie made to look like it is coming from say AT&T or worse yet your bank. Why Pod2G sees this as an issue is that because when you reply to said message it sends you not to your bank but back to the hackers site. Or as he says quote
- pirates could send a message that seems to come from the bank of the receiver asking for some private information, or inviting them to go to a dedicated website. [Phishing]
- one could send a spoofed message to your device and use it as a false evidence.
- anything you can imagine that could be utilized to manipulate people, letting them trust somebody or some organization texted them.
unquote.
Pod2G ends his post with the advice to never trust any SMS you receive on your iPhone.
Per this issue Here is a post about on the loop - which I am going to read pretty much verbatim as Apple replied to Jim on this - thanks Jim.
Quote Apple on Saturday responded to reports of a vulnerability to SMS spoofing that can be done to users of the company’s iPhone. From Apple quote “Apple takes security very seriously. When using iMessage instead of SMS, addresses are verified which protects against these kinds of spoofing attacks,” an Apple representative told The Loop. “One of the limitations of SMS is that it allows messages to be sent with spoofed addresses to any phone, so we urge customers to be extremely careful if they’re directed to an unknown website or address over SMS.” unquote There is a key point in what Apple told me (me being Jim and not me - we are still in Jims quote). A lot has been written in the press about how the “iPhone” has this problem, but Apple isn’t alone. The vulnerability is not with the iPhone, but rather with the SMS technology. The iPhone is not alone in being susceptible to this type of attack — all phones that use SMS can be tricked in the same way. That’s why the verification and security of using iMessage is so much better.
Unquote.
Again that is from an article over on the loop - link of course in the show notes for ep 236
So essentially Pod2G ended his article with don't trust an SMS on an iPhone - and I guess Apple is saying don't trust an SMS on any smartphone.
Sweet
Thanks to Jim for this next one. Remember there was rumblings that AT&T might charge for FaceTime over cellular - well now AT&T has stated that they will not charge on one little condition - you have to be on any of their Mobile Share plans to use FaceTime over cellular for free. What the Frack - AT&T do you really really really want us to jailbreak that bad? Or maybe you just want people to switch to Sprint - that does not try any of this crap. Either way this is sooooo un cool AT&T. I use AT&T and I have stuck with them through thick and thin - but more and more they give me reasons not to want to stay. Luckily for me I will just keep jail breaking and using tweaks to get around the Insane policies. Data is Data - and I have an unlimited data plan - I should be able to do with my data as I please. Again only Sprint seems to understand the meaning of the word Unlimited - which is why I invested in Sprint early this year when the stock was at $2.19 a share - and now sits at $5.19 a share - ka ching. Thanks AT&T for doing your best to make Sprint a much more attractive carrier for anyone new looking for an iPhone - just sayin.
Into the email bag.
Hi Rob, I just discovered a trick to get FaceTime over 3G now without Jailbreaking. You need a tether.com account (not sure if it works with the tether app that was quickly pulled from the App Store). Connect your MacBook to your iPhone via tether. Run FaceTime on your MacBook. Apparently, FaceTime thinks the MacBook is on a wifi network and works (though choppy). Regards,
Lou V
Hi Rob,
I created a guide to photography on the iPhone 4S:
It teaches positioning, editing, different options with the built-in camera app, and more.
Thanks for all that you do.
Regards,
Ben.
Hi Ben thanks for the heads up on the link - folks search for iPhone Photography guide in the show notes for Ep 236 over at today in iOS dot com .

Episode 235 Transcript
----------------------
On the last episode I mentioned that BGR was chastising two other sites for their record of past rumors - this being in regards to these two sites saying that the iPhone 2012 would launch on Sept 21st. Well now iMore is claiming to have even more info from their unnamed sources - which they claim said the Apple event introducing the iPhone 2012 would be on Sept 12th with the launch on Sept 21st - backing up what the sites BGR knocked were saying. And then All Things D and Jim Darymbell and a bunch of others are claiming they are hearing the same thing. Funny - BGR can't even be right about someone else being wrong when it comes to Apple rumors. Just sayin.
Anyway some of the other info iMore is claiming is that the iPhone Mini and the iPod touch 5th gen may also be announced on Sept 12th.
iMore is sticking with the 19 pin smaller dock connector - as well as a 4" screen for the iPhone 2012. As well as the latest rumor from iMore that all the iOS devices will be updated to the new smaller dock connector - so not only will the new iPhone 2012 be introduced with the smaller dock connector, but also the iPod touch 2012, and the iPad Mini 2012 and the iPad maxi - 2012 fall will be introduced with the new dock connector - this not to be confused with the new iPad 2012 Spring - with the 30 pin dock connector.
Yeah - if you are having a hard time buying that Apple would introduce a new version of the new iPad - the one introduced in March - well you would not be alone on that.
Putting aside for a minute that iMore's source is saying the iPad will be updated as well - or there will be an iPad mini announced - It does appear the sept 12 date is all but confirmed by Apple - as the typical apple media mouth pieces have all confirmed the date of the announcement and the launch date of the iPhone 2012. So based on assuming the Sept 12 announcement is real - some are now starting to speculate what that means for Apples competitors - and one that it appears to effect the most is Microsoft and their Surface tablets. But you know what - no one but Microsoft is to blame for that - they refused to release all the details about the surface earlier when they announced it and when they finally get around to announcing the details - all anyone will likely be talking about is the new iPhone 2012 and other potential new Apple products. Leaving Microsoft there to only make news by giving the price and battery performance of their surface tablets. And guess what the price while for the lower end will be close to or equal to the low end iPad 3rd gen - in that $499 price range - the higher end surface will likely be much higher and battery life is likely to be much much worse for the higher end device.
In other words when the rest of the world is fixated by new Apple toys - those covering MS surface or those MS are begging to cover them are only going to get to talk about pricing that is on par or slightly more expensive than the iPad and the Surfaces battery life being not nearly as good.
But then again - that is all just speculation. But the longer MS waits to reveal Price and real world tech specs - people will start to speculate
Microsoft would really surprise everyone if the low end Surface is less than the low end iPad and had better battery life - but even then - that likely would get over shadowed by the iPhone 2012 launch.
Yup kind of sucks to be launching anything new tech wise between Labor day and Halloween in the US this year that does not start with i and have an apple logo on it.
One thing about the Apple v Samsung trial going on that is nice is the info behind the curtain at apple we are privy to - that in the past we never would have been privy to. Such as when Apple executive Eddy Cue sent an email in January 2011 to CEO Tim Cook and others recommending that the company build its own 7-inch tablet.
Quote I believe there will be a 7-inch market and we should do one, unquote Eddie Cue wrote in the email. Well I guess if Apple execs were already starting to lean that way in Jan 2011 - maybe seeing a 7 or 8 in tablet in 2012 is not so far fetched after all. Especially now that the Nexus 7 is getting good reviews. Could / should be an interesting Sept 12 event.
Into the email bag.
Hi Rob,
There's been talk about the new iPhone possibly having a small dock connector. But, I am thinking, is there really a need for the dock connector at all?
We already have WiFi sync, AirPlay and AirPrint. What if Apple decided to include induction charging? There really would be no need for the dock connector at all.
Just a thought.
Tony L San Francisco
My thoughts on this are close to yours - except - I think there will still be a port on the bottom and it will be a mag safe type port for charging and audio / video in / out only.
Not for data sync'g which will be done via Wifi / bluetooth and NFC modes now.
I don't think it will be a 19 pin connector as reported in the past and present by many - but again a mag safe type port for charging / audio and video.
You kind of have to have a charging port for a device and can't rely on just inductive charging - especially for a phone - where you are mobile and will not always be near an inductive charging matt / station.
So there has to be a port - but I do agree that for sync'g the device - that no longer needs to be done via a port at the bottom, or top or sides for that mater.
More thoughts on this.
Hi Rob,
I don't believe there will be a 7" iPad, per se. The only thing it would compete with is the full-sized iPad. However, it seems to me that the dedicated mobile gaming market is something that Apple could exploit more - so a 7" iPod Touch marketed as such would be a good possibility.
Going back to the connector controversy, I don't see any point in going to a different connector if it uses the same basic technology - but I was very impressed by the magnetic power cable connection on the MacBook Pro my friend just got. Moving to new technology like that would be a big jump up.
Regards,
John.
I really don't want to talk about the Apple v Samsung case - just the juicy tid bits that leak out. That said there is a nice slide that breaks down Apples argument nicely - it shows the Samsung Smartphones pre and post the original iPhone launch - and well It is very clear post the iPhone - Samsung designs look like nothing they had ever done and the only way to show an evolutionary trend is by going through the iPhone.
Hi Rob
Ya think Apple's legal team has contacted him yet? Lol!
Ryan L
Thanks Ryan for the heads up on this - and this being that the president of Sharp confirms shipments of displays for the new iPhone begin this month. Dooohhh - I think that some suppliers are not as afraid of Apple now that Tim is in charge.
That said I also wonder if this might not actually be something Apple approved. Seems a lot of info getting out awfully early this year about that Sept 12th and Sept 21st dates. You know - a lot of current iPhone owners or wanna be iPhone owners are holding off now upgrading - but I have to image many buyers of other devices are holding off now - just to see what the new iPhone will really be like. I wonder if all these Apple Rumors are hurting the other guys sales this quarter.
Ok - iOS 6 Beta 4 is out. One of the biggest changes with iOS 6 beta 4 - or so I hear - Is the elimination of the Youtube app - That's right - the last app in on the original iPhone - the one we speculated about for weeks leading up to the launch of the iPhone - that same Youtube app - is now gone. Apples official wording about this is the following
quote Our license to include the YouTube app in iOS has ended. Customers can use YouTube in the Safari browser and Google is working on a new YouTube app to be on the App Store. unquote.
So what this means is now - if you want Youtube on your iOS device go in via safari to youtube.com - and then select the button that is the box with the arrow coming out and select "add to home screen" and that puts an icon on your home screen to quickly get you to Youtube - reality is it is not that big a deal once you do that - because you could not use the Youtube app in off line anyway - so a web app for youtube is close to the native app - but for many users - they just don't know about creating the icon on their phone and for then youtube usage will drop. As Apple said - Google is also going to come out with their own app you can install - but again people have to install it. Which is never ideal. Guess Google did not want to keep paying for placement. Actually googles response to this was
quote “We are working with Apple to ensure we have the best possible YouTube experience for iOS users.” unquote
Because you know having to find and download the Youtube app is soooo much better an experience for the endusers than well having it installed when you update your iOS software or get a new iOS device - Just sayin.
Oh well - I am sure there will be a lot of posts out about this over the next few weeks plus.
Into the email bag.
Hey Rob, Could you also include your Audible recommends in your show notes? Regards, Rel
Ok - I will try to remember to do that - for the last two weeks it has been cloud atlas - again I will try to remember to put that in the show notes for ep 235.
Hello Rob,
In order to get data and MMS working on Straightalk, here is a simple tutorial.
You will need either a T-Mobile or Verizon micro sim card as well as your Straight Talk card.
1st - Open an app such as the notes app.
2nd - Insert the non straight talk sim into the iphone. Go to settings, general, network.
Wait for the apn setting to come up and click on it.
3rd - Eject the non straight talk sim, and insert the straight talk sim.
4th - Double click multi task to the notes app. Wait until straight talk comes up on the carrier in the upper left corner.
Double click back to the settings where the straight talk info should be filled in the apn settings.
5th - Now you can replace the relevant information supplied with your sim card or from Straight Talk Website.
Hope this helps,
Curt
The most important metric for any public company is profits. Are you making money doing what you are doing.
And when you look at the mobile space - for quite some time Apple has been kicking butt and taking names when it comes to profits. IDC is reporting last quarter Apple generated a mind blowing 77% of profits from all the smatphones and tablets sold world wide.
Forget market share forget lawsuits and injunctions - just think 77% of all the profits from the mobile smartphone and tablet industry is going to one company and funding one companies R&D efforts. That bodes well for future cool products from Apple - well the future so bring I kinda need to wear shades.
Pocket Gamer did a test of 53 different tablets for battery life and the results. iPad 3rd gen was number 1 and iPad 2 was number 2. As if there was a doubt. They tested each device for web browsing over wifi - The 3rd gen iPad lasted 761 minutes that is about 12.7 hours. The iPad 2 lasted 590 minutes - in 3rd place was the Nexus 7 at 550 minutes. The average time was 381 minutes for the 49 non Apple tablets tested. So yes the iPad 3rd gen has double the battery life of the average non Apple tablet. In last two spots was the Asus EEE pad at 335 minutes - maybe they should rename it the eek pad. The Moto Xoom2 media edition tablet came in far worse at 221 minutes. Because nothing says are we there yet like kids whose tablet died with a couple hours left on your trip.
Be still my beating heart - an Apple TV story that is actually about an additional feature or in this case button or is it App - well either way Hulu+ has finally finally finally made its way on to Apple TV. If you do not see Hulu+ on your Apple TV - simply do a restart of Apple TV and you all see it appear. You can register for Hulu+ right from your Apple TV or do so from a webpage. If you do so from a webpage or already have an account you then just log into your account via the Hulu+ app on Apple TV.
Please note - Hulu+ does not - repeat does not carry AMC shows - it is more about the big network shows - especially NBC and FOX shows.
So if you are thinking about signing up for Hulu+ I highly recommend you see what shows they do cover first.
That all said you know if you have listened to this show for a while I used to bemoan that Hulu+ was not on Apple TV - it made it where to watch modern family I had to do it on my laptop or iPad. Of course I have long since given up on Hulu+ - Netflix is where I waste any free time these days
Thanks to John for this next one - which is just for Mac people and it is with regards to Mountain Lion - which is OS 10.8 - the latest version of the OS. And one of the great new features in OS 10.8 aka mountain lion is airplay mirroring to Apple TV. You do need a 2011 or newer mac for this to work. But this is a nice addition - One thing I am looking forward to using this for is DVD's. I have a Mac Book Pro 2011 - 15" and I use it for playing my DVD's I get from Netflix - now I can watch those on my big screen TV in my bedroom via Apple TV. Or at least I hope I will be able - I have not updated to 10.8 - as I need to do a screen cast - and so far the software I use is not 10.8 compliant yet. So anyway if anyone was able to airplay a DVD from Netflix via Apple TV to their big screen TV - please let me know.
Hi Rob,
Just wondering if you ever installed the back door for your phone with the glowing apple? And how did it go and work for you. Levi in Riverside, CA
Hi Levi - actually I did put the back case with the glowing Apple logo with Steve jobs in the logo - on my iPhone. It took a little bit to do and get it to connect correctly. But I got it done and showed it off last month at KFEST. It is still working - the only down side is that the edge of the back case is cracked or really separated from the seam. I think I did this when putting it back together - and let me tell you these 45 year old eyes had a tough time getting it all together correctly - it actually took a few tries.
My best suggest is set aside 4 hours to do this - it should take less - but if you have lots of time set aside - you might not rush it and do better than I did. I tried to originally do it under an hour - Nope - no way.
Also make sure to ground your self.
Again - it is working fine - except the back case is separated from the seam of the case.
FYI - No soldering is required - so if you need to bring your iPhone in for repair work - you can quickly remove the internal LED pad with no signs of anything having been done. Oh one other issue - some times depending on the shorts I am wearing you can see the logo coming through the pocket on my shorts. Which just looks strange. Until I show what it is - then it just looks uber geeky.
Hi, Rob,
Just got my Touchfire today. It's a Kickstarter project that is a thin membrane keyboard for the iPad that allows touch typing. It works great! It attaches easily to the Apple Smart Cover and just as easily rests on the screen keyboard when the iPad is in landscape mode. It stays in place using the iPad's magnets. You can rest your fingers on the keyboard as with a standard keyboard and not accidentally hit letters. Fantastic idea and stays with your iPad all the time and still allows the iPad to sleep when the cover is closed. I typed this email quickly and easily using the Touchfire. We're one step closer to laptop obsolescence...
Thanks for the show, Bob S
A little update on the Pair with Pear Kickstarter project I am sponsoring - Or should say that was on Kickstarter - seems the project is gone - off of Kickstarter - why you ask - seems it has to do with lawyers - Shock and dismay followed. Anyway here is the update from Brendan who was running this project.
Where is Pear on Kickstarter you ask or what has happend to Pear? Well, that’s a great question. Seems that someone thought we were treading on their trademark so they hired a bunch of lawyers and knocked on Kickstarter’s door. (I guess it’s too hard to just send a simple email…or pick up the phone…it’s not like we couldn’t have changed it over the next 4-8 weeks just prior to tooling. This is a “project” and we would have LOVED to have our backers feedback of our new design…)
Where is Pear on Kickstarter? Well, Kickstarter received the letter and then removed our project.
Where is Pear on Kickstarter? Well, we are down, but not out… We are going to use this time to finalize many of the requests our backers had.
Where is Pear on Kickstarter? We will be back… but, in case we need to contact you again, please do us a favor… send us an email: media@PairWithPear.com or follow us on twitter: @PearMedia1 or like us on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/PairWithPear
Oh yeah, and tell your friends… This will be a great story someday!
And the support we are receiving has been awesome! There are great ideas flowing in as well as people spreading the word. We have had contact via Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, and our own site. Thanks!
Brendan.
I hope to have brendan on the show in the near future to go over his product - how it will work - and the night mare he is having with lawyers and kickstarter.
Hi Rob, Just backed this. think the idea is great. Tired of having to use a wii-mote for emulator games. regards, Levi
And what this is a project called the Bladepad - which quote turns your iPhone into a true gaming system complete with dual joysticks, dual bumpers and a detachable protective case. unquote - You know some of those cases that have a slider keyboard under that tucks away under the iPhone when not in use - that is the principle here except it is gaming controls that slide out of the way when not in use.
While it looks good - it is likely not getting funded - it is at only $12.7k vs a goal of 55k - and just 18 days to go.
If you want to help out on this one search for bladepad - one word in kickstarter.
Price for this is $69 buck.
Thanks levi for the heads up on this one.
Thanks to Tony for the heads up on this next one - Do you Remember the Pebble Kickstarter Project - the one that raised over $10 Million in Pledges. Yeah - Well success breeds imitation - and now there is another smart watch Kickstarter Project with a long list of features that sound pretty much like the Pebble - this one is called the Strata - and comes from the former connected team at Fossil. This one is not being funded at anywhere close to the rate of the Pebble. But if you missed out on the pebble or just are curious on how it compares to the pebble you ordered search for Strata over at Kickstarter or in the show notes for ep 235
FYI - they have raised over $236k which is pretty good vs a goal of 100k and they have 12 days left to go with funding ending on August 20th at 12:59 AM ET. So if you want this one - it will happen as they are past their goal.
Thanks to Thomas in Alabama for this next kickstarter project and it is a project that is funded - they had a goal of 50k and are at 72k with 20 days to go.
What is said project that is funded - it is called - Try iOS colon - iPhone App development course. So what is it - well it is per a course to teach iOS app development - quote learn how to build iPhone apps by watching videos and coding in your browser - no downloads needed unquote.
So for $25 - the price of one of those learn iOS dev books at Barnes and noble - you could get permanent access to the course once it is released.
If you have been saying you need to learn to code for iOS - this might be what you are looking for. At a min check out the video is you are curios - you have until August 28th at 7:01 pm ET. Search for Try iOS in kickstarter or look for the link in the show notes for ep 235 or go to code school dot com. Thanks again Thomas for the heads up on this one.
We have in the past mentioned how Verizon actively was pushing LTE only smartphone - read NOT the iPhone - But now BGR is reporting AT&T was going one step further - trying to push those that came in for an iPhone into an Android or Windows phone and that AT&T employees were not allowed to have an iPhone for their company phone. BGR's tag line is the three biggest letters in tech - if those letters are l i e - Yes I would agree - And this story smells so bad I can't believe others are reporting it - but they are. Sadly. AT&T for their part actually responded and to BGR and said unt uh. Why I feel this is just BS from BGR - one not one person before this story has sent in an email or phone call that they were steered away from an iPhone at AT&T Nor has that been reported anywhere else - 2. None of the AT&T employees that listen to this show have said they were not allowed to have an iPhone anymore nor was that reported anywhere else and Oh yeah the number 3 reason why this BGR story is BS is last quarter 75% of smartphones sold at AT&T were iPhones - that does not sound at all like a company that was steering customers from iPhones. Plus steering people from a phone they asked for makes no sense from a sales rep perspective - someone walks in the door asking for your most expensive phone - you write up the ticket run their credit check and get them signed up before they can change their mind. Duhhhh.
Hi Rob,
I while ago I did a beginner's Photoshop Touch Tutorial, and many people asked for a more advanced one.
So I just made one: http://iosstuffandreviews.com/2012/08/06/advanced-photoshop-touch-tutorial/
In this tutorial I went over some compositing and a little color correction.
Thanks for all that you do, I enjoy the show.

Hi Rob,
The Parrot ZIK bluetooth headphones (designed by Philippe Starck) are not only beautiful and elegant, but also has elegant external touch controls.
See the website here
The Parrot Audio Suite is a free app dedicated to the headset that will allow you to control active noise cancellation, equalizer and check battery levels
Just the way it's designed makes me want to go out a get one... if it didn't have a $399 price tag.
If any of the listeners have tried these, I'd love to hear about it.
Thanks Rob for all you do.

Hi Cameron - thanks for the heads up - I sent in an request for samples to test - surprise surprise no response yet. If anyone has tried these - please let us know how they worked are working for you.
Back to the emails -
Hi Rob,
Thanks for your show and your work. I have a basic question. Is there a way to place a podcast episode on "repeat"?
In the early versions of iOS, there existed a "repeat" button because podcasts were treated identically to songs. More recently, apple removed the repeat button for podcasts and replaced it with the"playback speed" button. But, even with that change, podcasts were essentially songs and thus any episode could be added to a playlist and the playlist could be repeated. Now, podcast cannot be added to playlists on the latest iOS and there is no simple way to automatically repeat an episode or series of episodes.
Is there a non-jailbreak solution to this problem? Do any of the third party podcasting apps allow for automatic replay?
regards,
Juan in Atlanta
Hi Juan,
With the Tii App you can go into the more tab and then settings and set it up to repeat current episode.
However with the Podcasts App that option is not there as you mentioned.
I will do a shout out to users of other Podcast catchers out there - which ones have a repeat that episode feature?
206-666-6364 - thats 206-moon-dog - or record your feedback and email it to today in iOS at gmail dot com.
Hi Rob. Here is a great Jailbreak tweak it is called Maximization It Gets rid of that pesky status bar in most Apps. Regards, Chris in London
Hi Chris thanks for the heads up - and the neat thing about this tweak is that you can choose which apps it is active for. So maybe you make it active for just mobile safari.
Hi Rob, Just ran across the tweak CameraConnector in cydia and bought it. Thought other listeners would be interested. regards, Levi
Thanks levi - and what CameraConnector is - is a tweak that allows you to use the Camera Connection kit from Apple on your iPhone and iPod Touch - yup - so up until now you could not connect you camera / usb device to your iPhone through the 30 pin dongle - just to the iPad - but this tweak lets you do just that.
Me personally as a podcaster am think an App like Boss Jock - would benefit from this - as it would or should allow you to connect a USB mic to the iPhone for recording on Boss Jock. Something to test out for sure. Search for CameraConnector - one word in Cydia.
It is $0.99 and it says it works with USB HID - human interface devices.
Under the category of how the heck did that get approved is the App - Amazon Instant Video. It is a free app - officially from Amazon - and just for the iPad - This is an app that works with a users Amazon Prime Instant Video account. Maybe Apple figures there are a bunch of people that got Kindles that have prime accounts - that now mostly use the iPad - and not the kindle fire - and they let the app in to appease that group. But just seems odd as it seems like a very competitive app to apples iTunes service. Any way if you are someone with an Amazon Prime account and you have an iPad - then you will want to check out the free Amazon Instant Video app.
Hi Rob,
A couple days ago, I started getting the error message below from PDANet. All I could do was exit with the Home button. Respringing and rebooting didn't fix the issue. I went onto Cydia and did a reinstall of the app. Works great, now.
Just thought I'd Pass along the tip in case you get other emails about the issue. I don't know what caused it. Regards, Steven (in Houston)
Rob
I am on Mountain Lion and am thinking of jailbreaking my iPad 3. Is it safe to use Redsnow as Absinthe doesn't work on ML. Is it a similar procedure
Please advise
Steve from AZ
Ummmm - I think so? Ok - that is not a really good answer - If anyone has used Redsnow with OS 10.8 - please let us know if all worked good for you with the jailbreak.
Hi Rob, i just downloaded the Directv app that claims that one can watch Directv programming anywhere. Problem is my iPhone 4s is Jailbroken and i guess i'm SOL. Just thought i'd let you know. Love the show and as always keep up the great work. Martin Infante Parlier, CA
Actually there is a jailbreak tweak I believe that hides the fact your are jailbroken - and I can't remember the tweak name. I think Chris in london had sent in an email on it in the past - but for the life of me I can't find it - and this email came in right before I started recording. So if Chris or anyone else can remember the name of the app - that makes other apps think you are not jailbroken - please let us know that app / tweak. Thanks
Hi Rob, I have listened to your show for a while now, you do a great job!
I am very interested in getting an iPhone, but I have a few questions. First I would like to buy the iPhone 4S unlocked from apple.com and use it on straight talk because I think its a great deal to get unlimited everything for 45$'s a month, But I hear all the rumors about a new iPhone coming out in the next couple months would you recommend I wait to buy that one? And if I would wait to buy that phone and it has the 4G LTE like the rumors say it will have will i still be able to buy a unlocked one at full price form apple and take it to straight talk? Even though it will be 4G and straight talk only only supports 3G could I just take to new iPhone to them and have it only work on the 3G? 4G is certainly neat but it does not appeal to me that much as I am in wi-fi alot and when I am not I really don't use anything that needs super fast data usually just internet radio and facebook... Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Sincerely, Ryan
Rob-
I was considering buying a used iPhone 4 or 4s and using it on the straight talk program. I understand it needs to be a AT&T phone. I was looking for advice on buying used either thru Craigslist, eBay or someplace you would suggest. I am concerned about cost and ending up with a phone that has problems. I figured it would be best to wait till the next iPhone is released in order to take advantage of more people looking to upgrade. Any idea what will be a good price on either model at that time? I didn't find a article on your website on buying used, if missed it could you provide me with a link.
Thanks,
I had quite a few listeners email in about The FCC stopping Verizon from charging for tethering. I had the following feedback. Hi Rob, I believe what this really means is that third party tethering apps are not illegal, meaning apps like mywi and pdanet are legal. It does not mean that the carriers will be forced to stop charging for tethering. I also don't think this means that tethering for free apps will start appearing in the app store because Apple still has the right to regulate what is available in their own store, but they can no longer claim that you are stealing from them by using third party tethering apps. Verizon and other carriers, which will be forced to follow this ruling can still charge for tethering, but as this news becomes more out in the open they may re-think their price structure for tethering. No matter what, it is a good thing for the consumer
Regards,
Todd P.
In the oh yeah - that is classic category comes the report of out london that Bill and Melinda gates were spotted and stopped on the streets in London by what appears to be some non-US olmpians and they ask for them to pose for a picture and Bill and Melinda graciously agree and once everyone is posing they pull out an iPad to take the picture. To which Melinda gates is heard saying you can't use an iPad to take the picture. I am assuming she meant it from a tact point of view and not a technical one. Still classic and almost as good as the Microsoft employee holding up his iPhone to take a picture of Steve Balmer.
Hi Rob, I have recently had a problem with my contacts where I have looked for a particular name (such as my wife's name) on my contact list and it hasn't been there. I noticed this happened before and after going into an apple store to speak to the tech guys, they told me it was probably something to do with google (as my default contact list is google) but somehow within 24 hrs it resolved spontaneously. It has recurred again twice in the last 24 hrs and I am tired of looking for contacts which I need every day (some of whom are on speed dial) and not finding them there having not deleted them. I find that if I scroll down in the contact groups and search in the gmail global address list I can then find them but this is annoying especially when u just for instance want to give someone a contact detail quickly or when there isn't any Internet connection.
I am tired of this happening and at this point would like to switch over all my contacts to iCloud now and I was wondering if u or any of your listeners know how this can be done. I will appreciate your help.
Thanks and keep up the good work. By the way love the show loads.

Hey Rob, just a quick question I'm wondering if you or your users know the answer to. How does the App store sort your available app updates? It doesn't seem to be by date or alphabetical order, and is there anyway to control this setting? Sometimes I do not update all my apps and I would like to be able to tell which ones have been sitting around for a while but it can be hard to keep straight without opening up each update since a new update will appear right in the middle of the list.
just wondering if anyone knows,
Thanks,
Ben
For those of you that use the Gmail for iOS App - just a heads up you have an update awaiting for you. For the most part it seems most of the changes we under the hood to help with performance. But one new feature lets users save picture attachments to their iOS photo library - which you know kinda sorta should have been there from day one.
This is not a podcast on Android - Although I do like to bash Android from time to time. And Recently I upset some hyper sensitive Android Fan Boys by saying that people buy Android phones just to make calls and they buy iPhones to do more than make calls - and part of that observation was based on the 10 to 1 ratio of podcast downloads on iOS devices vs Android. Well you know who also realized this - Google - that is who. And Google faced with the fact that Android users are just not in mass consuming podcasts - well they decided they would completely redo their Android native app - Google Listen - and by completely redo - I mean give up on it. Concede defeat to Apple - With Google basically admitting they have no idea how to make a good Podcasting client - and in essence saying to podcast listeners - if you want to listen to podcasts - get an iPhone. So for all you podcast listeners new to the show after Google basically told you to leave - welcome over.
Yeah as a Podcaster and working for the Largest podcast hosting company - Google decision to kill Google Listen - was really really disappointing. But as a iOS podcaster - the decision was yet just more proof to the point - iOS is for more than making calls and Android - is for those that just want to make calls. Even Google now realizes that.
If I was a Google employee I would be pretty embarrassed right now. Just sayin.

Hi Rob
I have had my iPhone 4 jail broken for about 2 weeks and I love it. There is the occasional disappearing Phone app when I install a tweak but well worth it. I enjoy Jailbreaking so much I am considering waiting to buy the new iphone until the untethered jailbreak is available
My question is this. The apps as they are displayed in ITunes are not in folders or are organized. The apps on my iPhone are arranged as I want them to be.
I have been backing my phone up to iCloud and ITunes.
When I buy the new iPhone and I restore from backup will my apps be like they are on iTunes or like they are on my phone.
Thanks
Steve from AZ
Hi Steve,
One down side of jailbreaking is it is harder to manage your Apps if you have a lot on iTunes on your computer - as apps often times don't show up in folders - as you are seeing. But the answer to your question is this - if the folders are standard iOS folders you created by dragging one app on top of another - and not any special jailbreak tweaked apps - even though the apps on iTunes on your computer are not showing up correctly - the next time you restore from the backup - it will look the same on your iOS device as it did before.
So short answer - what you see on your iOS device now is what you will see after your restore.
One exception would be is you use an app like 5 columns - where you get well 5 columns of apps on each screen - then all bets are off.

Rob W

Episode 234 Transcript
---------------------------------
Apple had their quarterly conference call earlier this week and Per the Analysts Predictions of iPhone sales the winner was… Well No one - Everyone went over the actual number of 26 Mil iPhones sold in the quarter. Katy Huberty, T. Michael Walkley and Shaw Wu tied for closest as all 3 had guessed 27 mil iPhones would be sold last quarter. I came in 2nd worst with my what was I thinking guess of 35.5 Mil iPhones sold. Only one analyst was higher than my guess. Themelani Kewtane had a 38.50 Mil prediction. Still it is a rare rare rare event when Apple's actual performance was worse than ALL the analysts including the ones that are almost always very bearish on Apple.
Switching to the iPads sales last quarter - the winner of guess the closest was Analyst Robert Cihra with a guess of 16.5 mil which was pretty close to the 17 mil actual number. I thought it would be around 18.75 Mil - Nope - Too high this time. Guess I need to go back guessing conservatively low again.
Other bits of interesting details from the call.
Apples total cash now is at 117.2 Billion dollars up 7 Billion for the quarter.
iPods sold a total of 6.8 Mil in the quarter - per usual Apple did not break out numbers specifically for the iPod touch other than to once again say iPod touch accounted for over 50% of iPods sold.
To date over 410 Million iOS devices have been sold. There are over 650,000 iOS apps in the App store. And over 225,000 iPad specific apps in that group. The iPhone is now available at over 250 carriers in over 100 countries.
iPad is now for sale in 97 countries.
Apple to date has paid out $5.5 Billion dollars to developers.
And Apple sold 1.3 Million Apple TV's last quarter and a total of over 4 Million in the last 3 quarters.
Now there has been a lot written since the quarterly call. If you want to see if someone is an Apple fan boy or Apple basher - just look at the title of their posts. Those that talk about / mention just the iPad sales record - those are Apple Fan boys.
Those that talk about the iPhones sales and the big drop from the past 2 quarters and being below all Apple analysts predictions - yeah those are the Apple Bashers.
Here is how I look at - they are both partially correct - Apple did have great iPad sales - 17 Mil is a new record and represents over 2/3 rd of the unit sales for Tablets and over 80% of Revenue and probably somewhere north of 95% of Profits for tablet sales for the last quarter.
But the iPhone drop off was pretty significant. And that was not the bad quarter for iPhone sales - this current one is. So expect this quarter that number to dive much lower.
Now again all was not horrible on the iPhone side - we talked about iPhone sales at Verizon last episode. And since then AT&T reported their numbers - AT&T said Tuesday that it activated 3.7 million iPhones during the second quarter, down from 4.3 million in the first quarter. But that 3.7 mil represented nearly three-quarters of the total 5.1 million smartphones it sold last quarter. Or put another way - Windows phone 7 that AT&T spend more marketing money on than the launch of the iPhone - yeah it and all the Android phones and Blackberry phones it sold only added up to 1.4 Million units vs the iPhone 3.7 Mil units.
Switching to Sprint - they reported their sales last quarter and said they sold 1.5 Mil iPhones in the quarter. Of those 1.5 Mil iPhones sold - 40% were to new to the Sprint network - which Sprint was very happy about. They also commented on how the iPhone costs less than other smartphone to support. No numbers were given on Smartphone sales overall. But it is important to note that last quarter Sprint sold about the same number of iPhones - so unlike Verizon and AT&T where there was a significant drop of iPhone sales last quarter vs the previous quarter - with Sprint the iPhone is holding the line and per Sprints accolades bringing in new customers to sprint.
And by the way those that were / are down on apple - just remember this - Microsoft just posted it first quarterly loss in company history. Now granted the loss was really a paper loss due to write downs. But still at 18.06 Bil in Revenue for the quarter Apple's 35 Bil in Rev was almost double that of Microsofts. Or put another way Apples revenue last quarter was more than Microsofts, Googles, RIMs and Netflix's combined.
Ok and that is enough of the Financial stuff for now.
Play VOICE MAILS ON STRAIGHT TALK.
Hi rob You can use the iphone on straight talk. To activate data you have to change the Apn. The easiest way i found was to be connected to wifi. After you insert the sim and activate your plan you open safari and head to unlockit.co.nz very simple sight and in 2-3 clicks you are all set with unlimited everything for $45 a month. On a jailbroke and software unlocked 3gs it took me aroun 15 min total but imessage and mms(i think) do not work. Iphone 4 it was around 10 mins total and everything works perfectly. Those 2 phones save me ~$120 a month. Now i am waiting to get out of this stupid verizon contract and straight talk will have another customer. Please pass this info on to everyone that uou can. If the big 3 notice enough people leaving maybe they will improve service instead of just raising prices. Thanks Dan

Thanks all that called in and sent in info about Straightalk - so if you are in the US - you have one of those officially unlocked from AT&T iPhones - and want a cheap service - it sounds like a visit to unlock it.co.nz is something you want to look into. FYI - that is a site we have mentioned in the past for other updates on APN's - so it is not a site we are just hearing about for the first time - this is one many listeners used in the past.

Hi Rob, Regarding the question about the message "Charging not supported with this accessory" mentioned in a recent podcast: I had not seen that on my iPhone until I installed the podcast app. Actually, the podcast app was open when I plugged my phone into a computer using the USB cord. So, I'm wondering if there is any connection between the podcast app and that message? My phone is up to date with iOS updates and I have not changed anything else lately. Regards,
Frank P
Hi Frank - I highly doubt that is the issue - I am running the Podcasts app all the time and I have not seen that issue.
Rob, for your listener on July 19 episode asking about a good stylus that has a small point. Here is the link to a Kickstarter project I ordered 6 of them for family members & friends. We need for writing orders & signing documents. Your listener should find these to be the smallest tips! Other cool factors & features too! http://handstylus.com/ Regards, Phil C
Hi Rob, The stylus that I use is the JOT and it is far superior to any other stylist that I have used. They make several styles like the mini, the classic, and soon to release a Bluetooth one, with two buttons that can be assigned to different types of brushes. Regards,
David V
Thanks to John for this next one which is about a contest - which you can enter - the City of St. Petersburg Russia is planning on a monument / statue / tourist attraction featuring the late steve jobs and they want your ideas - the best idea will win some apple gear - you have until August 6th to submit your idea. Obviously submitting the idea of a naked steve jobs posed as the rodin's thinker holding an Apple - yeah - I am sure that one is taken. my first thought was that of bronze 3d version of Sistine Chapel Ceiling Artwork you know the artwork with Adam and God reaching out a finger towards each other. Except replace Adam with God and God with Steve and Steve holding an iPad and God reaching out to touch the iPad. Yeah that would be cool - and I can't at all imagine the church objecting to that Or some of you for that mater - please note that was meant tongue in cheek.
Hey - an iPod Touch 5th gen rumor. This one comes from KGI Securities Analyst Ming-chi Kuo - and he claims that Apple will be updating the iPod touch later this year with an all new design. Ok up to this point not much of stretch - as the 4th gen iPod touch is basically two years old now - so a new update this year would be more surprising if it did not happen then if it did and a new design - well year the iPod touch design is a bit dated.
ming-chi also said it would have the new in-cell touch display and 4 inch display making the rumor rounds for the iPhone 2012. So again - nothing special.
He did say the design would be one of buffed aluminum of the rear shell vs the highly reflective Stainless steel case of the current 4th gen iPod touch.
One other item that was strange is the report of a hole in the lower back of the iPod touch.
This info of course comes from un-named sources.
But if the parts about the iPod touch turn out to be true sans the hole in the lower back - it is possible the whole was just added to let Apple know which prototype it was - and track back leaked photos to those Apple new they gave it to.
Guess we will be waiting until late Sept / early Oct for more info on this one.
File this next one away in the back of your mind for future Apple offerings - Seems Apple just purchased the company AuthenTec for $356 Million. Authentec is the leading supplier of smart sensors and embedded security devices such as Fingerprint readers. This seems to go well with rumors about NFC and smart wallet tech that might show up in a future iOS device. Anyway - that this is something Apple would do - is clear from the purchase price. $356 Million is a lot of money for an acquisition for Apple. Sure it is small compared to what Microsoft or Google do - but Apple is not one that acquires many companies. To put this in better context - This is the 3rd largest acquisition Dollar wise Apple has ever made in its entire history. And the two ahead of it. At 390 Million dollars was Anobit back in Dec 2011 - they provide tech for Flash memory - kind of an important part of iOS and now macs. And the number one acquisition was at $400 Million - and that was NEXT - which brought Apple two important things - the base code for OS ten and Steve Jobs. So yes - at 356 Mil for AuthenTec - this was not an acquisition that was on a whim - it is strategic and look for this tech sooner rather than later in Apple ware.
PLAY VOICE MAIL FROM KEVIN ON IPAD MINI
Ok this next one falls into that iPad Mini rumor territory. It is a post from Mashable - that I have to admit makes a really good point - and they make the point with a chart. They show all the price points for the iPod line up. And all the price points for the iPhone lineup. And then they show the iPad price points - and you can see there is a glaring hole below the $400 price line. Now some are saying the price point of the iPad mini needs to be in the $200 range to match the nexus - Ummmm no. Apple does not need to match the competitions price point - just be within $100 of it. So a 16 GB iPad Mini at $299 - would actually be within $50 of the 16 GB Nexus. At the end of the day most consumers will pay a little bit more for a simpler device with a much better eco system.
Plus Apple does not sell products for a loss. So I just don't see a price below $299 if and when Apple announces an iPad mini or whatever it will be called - which is almost definitely not the iPad Mini.
Hi Rob,
I have an alternative theory around the mini iPad.
I don't think Apple will make one. Instead I think the iPod touch will be upgraded to a 7 in screen.
The target demographic for the iPod touch seems the ideal one for a bigger screen.
As of now, due to the lower cost of prior generation iPhones through carriers, I don't think
it makes much sense for the existing iPod touch. Parents would typically buy the touch to
save money, but with a free 3GS or an iPhone 4 for less than $100, it makes sense for a
parent to buy an iPhone instead of a touch and have the added benefit of phone access for
the child. Now, an iPod touch with a bigger screen will introduce a new lure for the device which
is very distinct from the iPhone and the iPad without any cannibalization.
Regards,
Sergio
Hi Sergio the only hole in your logic and it is kinda a big one - is that iPhones are not quote free unquote from carriers - you still have to spend thousands for the cellular plan - so an iPod touch is a great one time purchase - no additional cost option for parents to get for their kids.
I am of the belief that there will continue to be an iPod touch similar in size to the current iPhone. Per an iPad mini - I think eventually there almost has to be something that falls somewhere between the size of the iPod touch and the iPad - what is now being called the iPad mini. Just not convinced that is a 2012 device - I think it will be 2013 - but we shall see.
One thing to remember about Reuters - They do do link bait. Which I think some people forget or do not realize - you can trust everything they say when it comes to Apple rumors - or actually most of what they say on the rumor front - Reuters does link bait - well some did not realize that and put out posts titled - Confirmed next iPhone will have a smaller dock connector.
Now it is very possible maybe at this point likely that the next iPhone will have a smaller dock connector. But at this point all it is is rumor attributed to unnamed sources at best.
Remember that when reading posts about the smaller dock connector being confirmed and they lead back to the Reuters article and their sources familiar with the matter.
Hi Rob I have an iPhone 4, running ios 5.1.1. Recently my battery performance has gone down significantly. I usually get at least a day and a half on a full charge. Maybe more. However over the last couple of weeks I'm lucky to get a day out of a charge. I wonder if it's caused by the new ios? I'd be interested to find out if anyone else is having the same problem. Regards
Paul M.
Hi Paul - it is likely do to an app you recently installed requiring location data - check to see if you see a purple triangle at the top on the right half of the iPhone. If so go into the settings and turn off location settings for all the apps you have that you don't feel need your location data. Actually do that even if you don't see the triangle. There are way to many apps asking for your location info - with the only reason being for ad networks.
FYI - a few of you sent in links to the Best buy page / flier showing that Verizon has lowered the price of the iPhone 4 to $49.99 - Ok - beyond what I said back in October - which was don't buy the iPhone 4 - just the 4S. What this reduction means and why I am mentioning it - it does seem to be something done to clear inventory. I was pretty much of the mindset the iPhone 2012 would not launch until mid to late October. But given the big drop off in iPhone sales last quarter - maybe a September launch is not out of the question now. And one indicator of an early launch would be when folks like Verizon and best buy and Radio shack start dropping prices. Thanks to those that sent in the emails on the lower price iPhone 4.

Hi Rob - with the upcoming adidtion of VIP lists in iOS6 it got me thinking.
Why doesnt Apple colour code each of your mailboxes, so when viewing the Unified Inbox, you can see at a glance which email is allocated to the various email addresses i have.
My iPad currently has 6 email addresses, and the ability to link a colour or even a coloured icon on the email would make my workflow a lot simpler.
Appreciate your thoughts Rob
Thanks

Great idea - Hopefully someone is listening in Cupertino - and if not there then a dev on the Jailbreak side hopefully is listening.
As always if you get a project you heard about here from Kickstarter - I highly encourage you to send in feedback on said projects when they finally ship. One product that just started shipping in the last two weeks is the Geode - that was the case with the finger print scanner and swipe card programmer - so you could make your swipe card look like any of your swipe cards - and this way you would not have to cary your credit cards, debit cards or any other rewards cards - well I have a couple of detailed reviews of the Geode - but since they are detailed and that means long - I will put them at the end of the episode today. So after the music at the end - stick around for the feedback on the Geode. Thanks Hector and Bob for your feedback.
Well Apple update the Podcasts App - and most of the update was to help bring more stability to the app - which you know is kind of important for an Apple App. It does appear to have worked - at lest for me with the new version of the podcasts app appearing to crash a lot less for me and pause a lot less. Still not instant access on launching - but much better.
Officially here is what changed / updated on the podcasts app.
- Significant improvements to performance and stability
- Podcasts in your library now show the number of unplayed episodes
- Top Stations now show the podcast title if artwork is missing
- Playback speed is now remembered when playing the next episode
- Fix for a problem where the Subscribe button is inactive
- Resolution of an issue where Top Stations artwork may not appear
I had the following email come in on the Podcasts App.
Hey, Rob, I really like the podcast app after using it for just a couple days. One comment: I find it annoying that the latest episode is at the top of the list. I like the idea that one plays after another and I can keep my hands on the car's steering wheel, but I wish the order of the episodes could be reversed so last in would be the last played. Maybe I just don't know how to do that yet. Regards,
Frank Phillips
Hi Frank thanks for the email - yes you can do this.
Here is how you do it - Launch the Podcasts App and then make sure you are on the Library side - that is where you manage your podcast subscriptions. Select one of your podcasts - Then at the top right you will see an arrow pointing right - tap that - That brings you to the quote settings unquote screen. If you scroll down you will see the Options for Sort this podcast - just select oldest first. You may also want to change the number of episodes to keep - especially for a podcast with lots and lots of episodes. For example for Mac OS Ken - I set it to keep the last 5 episodes and sort oldest first. This way if one week I get behind I can go to the oldest episode at the top hit play and it will continue down the list. Frank I hope that helped you out.

Good Morning Rob
It's about time the Apple Podcast App got an update! On the whole the app does appear more solid & a lot more stable but it's still very much, a work in progress.
There's still no Playlist or even Catalogue Grouping options or Push Notifications when new shows drop & more worryingly it would appear that the app WILL download new shows via 3G, there doesn't appear to be any options yet to download via WIFI only. This is a must when you only have 1 gig of data a month! Where is the app wide options? Why do I have to set up options for each individual podcast?
It's an improvement but still only a 2 star app, Downcast is still King.
Thanks for all you do
Cheers
Craig

Philip Elmer Dewitt over at fortune had a good article about Apples fight with the DOJ and the basic petty nature of the DOJ in this case. Look plain and simple - the US government is siding with Amazon who was basically in a monopolistic position when it came to ebooks. And well it is crazy. When public comments were allowed there was a 10 to 1 ratio of comments for apple vs the US Government. Heck even Chuck Schumer - the US senator from NY put up an op ed piece in the Wall Street Journal calling on the current administration to drop this case.
Any way this is a perfect example of the US Government backing a monopoly and hurting an industry that was already hurting.
Hopefully someone in Washington wakes up and drops this case. And kudos to Apple for not caving on this.

Hi Rob,
Since I upgraded to ios 6, beta 3, Siri does not work. Do you know if anyone else is experiencing the same thing? Regards, Steve Appleseed
St. Louis, Mo.
Hi Steve - Nope have not heard that from anyone else. Did you do a partial update over the air - or the full update via iTunes on the computer?
If anyone else out there is experiencing the same issue - please let us know.

Hi Rob,
Below is a picture of my New iPad (AT&T) in the Washington, DC metro area running the SpeedTest app.
I live close to Philadelphia and can't wait until LTE comes to my area.
Regards,

Hi Walt thanks for the photo which showed 19 MB down and 26.26 MB up. Nice - again folks if you have an LTE iPad run a speed test and let me know what you are seeing for upload and download speeds in your area.

Hi Rob,
We Dutch and I think the French have a problem with the addressbook of the iPhone/Ipad.
Oure full names you can split in four parts instead of three.
Example: Jan Pieter van der Zand "Jan" is the first name "Pieter" is the second name "van de" is the insert and "Zand" is the last name
French example: Jean Claud e la Monde "Jean" (first name) "Claud" (second name) "de la" (insert) "Monde" (last name)
When we put the "insert" into the "last name" field, the names are sorted by the "insert". When we put the insert into the "second name" field they seem to be sorted well but in web forms the "second name" is ignored, because some forms you have to enter the "insert and "last name" field. On other sites you need to enter the "insert" seperately.
OK, I know you're not from Apple, but maybe you or some users with much better English can help to get the "insert" field in the iOS addressbook.
Regards,
Marcel van de Lindt
Apple has a new Siri commercial this one starring Martin Scorsese or as Siri calls him - Marty. I love the homage to Taxi Driver - as the whole commercial is out of the back of a NY Taxi. Interestingly I saw a couple of reviews of the commercial that stated most people would not know who Martin Scorsese is? Hmmm Really guess I am out of touch with the masses on this one. But I do love movies and am from NY originally.
We talked previously about a Russian hacker that figured out how to work around in app purchases so that you did not need to you know purchase them. Well that Hacker is reporting that in iOS 6 - Apple has a fix to the exploit he used. Apple also says iOS 6 will fix the issue and then gives advice to devs on what to do in the interim to patch their apps to prevent this.
This includes being allowed to use a previously restricted API.
If you are a dev and need more info on this - look for the link in the show notes for ep 234 titled - Apple says iOS 6 to fix in-app-purchase fraud
over at today in iOS dot com.
My son recently said to me and I paraphrase Dad you can have to much ice cream and you can have to much candy but you can never have too many toys. Oh such wisdom for such a young boy. Anyway I mention that because it appears with iOS 6 you can have too many toys or in this case apps. In the past you could only see 11 screens of apps - but you could have any amount you wanted on your iOS device - as long as you had enough storage for all the apps.
However in iOS 6 beta it seems there is a limit to the amount of toys we can have on the iOS device.
Essentially what is being reported is that when you have over 500 apps installed you will begin to experience slow booting issues. Exceed 1,000 apps and your iOS device won't even boot at all.
I know some of you in the past have emailed in or called in about having well over 500 apps and a couple of you reported over 1000 apps. If you are one of these people and you are running iOS 6 - please let us know what your experience has been.
Hi Rob, I have photos and videos in events in iPhoto. I use iTunes to sync what events I want to my iDevices. Sometimes I want the videos in the events to be synced too, sometimes it depends on the event. I know the check box in iTunes that says "Include Videos" but that is a setting that is too large for me. Do you know of a way to choose which events sync photos AND videos, and then other events not sync the videos so it doesn't fill up my iDevices with videos of stuff that I don't want? Thanks, Drew K
Hi Drew I think you are SOL on this one - I do not know of a way to do this - but if anyone has any suggesting for Drew - Please let us know - 206-666-6364 - that 206-moon-dog - or email today in iOS at gmail dot com.
Hi Rob, as far as you know, is there any such limit specifically for photos on the iPad? I have read in several discussion forums that people experienced limits restricted to 16 GB regardless of whether they had a 32 or even 64 GB iPad? And these people supposedly had way more than enough available storage left in their iPads to accommodate the photos otherwise.
Regards, Ben
Hi Ben - I know of no such limit and was able to easily get over 16 GB of photos and movies on my iPads. However I did not have of 16 gb of just photos - so I will ask if anyone knows for sure that they have over 16 GB of photos on your iPad - let us know - call or email

Hi Rob,
Do you know if I can have one iCloud account to two iPhones (me and my wife)?
I already backup my iPhone to iCloud since it doesn't backup to the computer and I want to backup her iPhone also to iCloud because her backup to computer stuck and doesn't manage to finish (me and my wife use different computers).
Thanks for your help

Hi Alon - Don't thank me - as I am not really sure. I will send this one out to the audience - For those of you that use iCloud for backing up your iOS devices - Can you send some advice for Alon.

Thanks to John for this next one. In the gee never saw this one coming category comes the story of a women that brought her iPhone into best buy and handed it over to a geek squad member. This women wanted the geek squad member to transfer hundreds of photos, numbers and contacts to her newly purchased iPhone. Now you can see the issue already - yup - in those photos there were racy photos and the geek squad member copied them to his computer and not her phone and then told her to come to his house if she wanted them back.
Folks - If you put racy photos of yourself on your phone and you give said phone to a stranger - a likely under sexed geek squad type person - ummm what did you think would happen. Ok in fairness his telling her to come to his place is way way way to creepy. In most cases all that happens is the photos wind up on some amateur porn site. And this case was way worse than that - but still it comes back to the original person handing over a device with racy photos - which you should never do.
Thanks to Tony for this next article - which is more a really really really long rant about iOS v Android from the perspective of a dev trying to make money. So if you are a dev and are thinking of crossing over and developing on the Android side - well you definitely want to check out this post - look for the one titled Closed for Business in the show notes for ep 234.
This next one has nothing to do with the iOS universe other than reminding you the grass is definitely not greener on the other side. It is a post from ZDNet about malware for Android - I know nothing special there - ton of that on the android side - but this one is funny from an iOS perspective because the malware is packaged with a legit copy of the opera browser. What does this malware do - well it sends international text messages which cost the user mucho denaro. As the article points out the first sign the user is infected with this malware is when they get their phone bill. But hey on the glass is half full side - here is an example of some devs making money on the Android. Just Sayin.
I often get down on reporters - be it for blogs or mainstream media for their lack of anything close to journalism 101 behavior. And this past week saw a great example of that when WPCentral reported the Surface Tablet prices would start at $1,000 - which lets face it - it just bat dung crazy - Say what you will about Balmer - but he ain't that dumb. But that did not stop a whole bunch of people on reporting it. I think the best article I read about this was from Ed Bot at ZDNet that really called out a few on this - and I just wanted to say kudos to Ed Bot for his article - Well done. Nice to see some sanity in a see of craziness this week.
In the Oh no they didn't category. Comes the following quote - quote Both PhoneArena and App4Phone, neither of which has a proven track record with pre-release iPhone rumors unquote - This is with regards to the latest rumor of Sept 21st for the iPhone 2012 launch. That quote was from wait for it wait for it - BGR. Yikes. Talking about people in glass houses throwing stones. If not for Digitimes BGR would have the worst track record on rumors. But for now they will have to just settle for second worst record. Just sayin.
Curious to see what some iPad and iPhone prototypes that were created and rejected by Apple look like - well normally you would never get to see said prototypes - unless one winds up on ebay - and then yanked shortly there after.
But thanks to Apple v Samsung - some photos of different iPhone and iPad prototypes have made the light of day - the Verge has a nice post showing a bunch of photos - which they got from the legal docs filed in the case. One has octagonal corners - kind of looks like something you would have seen in Battlestar galactica - and interestingly it had no doc connector. There are some others sans the home button. There is even a thinner iPhone barely wider than the 30 pin doc connector - Over all - it is pretty clear why many of these never made the cut. But still interesting to see none the less.

Hi Rob,
I noticed I had never submitted a review of the Tii app so I have corrected this oversight.
Perhaps you could mention that others should also write a review so they can post your rating for the most recent version.
Hi John - Well I think you just did mention it on the show - Thanks. Folks - if you have the Tii app and like it a positive review in iTunes would be great - if you don't like - then yeah - ummm - well we are working on it. But if you don't have the Tii App - it is just $2.99 in the App store and it is the best way to consume this show. Forget Instagram or the Podcasts App - only the Tii App gets you Push messages from me and only the Tii App lets you email or call in to the show directly from the app. Just search Tii in the App store.
As mentioned earlier - here is some of the feedback on the Geode Kickstarter project that just started shipping.
Hi, Rob -->
I backed the Geode on Kickstarter and got mine last week. Here's a very early review:
The Geode is an iPhone case that is supposed to be a digital wallet. It contains a card with a magnetic strip that can be configured to be all of the credit/debit cards you currently carry in your wallet. Additionally there is an e-ink window on the back that can display your so-called loyalty cards. Mine arrived late last week and I followed the instructions to download the app and let the app walk me through the setup. The setup was very well done. In putting the case on the phone, I noticed it didn't quite fit...there are two clam shell pieces that don't slide together as nicely as they did when there was no iPhone in the case. That left a small gap, but it doesn't seem to affect the operation.
I managed to get all of my debit/credit cards scanned in easily. They provide you with a small magnetic strip reader that temporarily attaches to the base and it works well. Likewise, using the phone's camera I was able to scan in my loyalty cards. There is a fingerprint scanner at the base of the unit and it works well. I scanned in my right thumb in setup and the scan seems to work every time. I tried to trick it using other fingers and it wouldn't let me into the app.
When I first tried to magnetize the Geode card I got an error message stating that there was no card in the slot. I contacted iCache and they got back to me immediately and FedEx'ed a new card, acknowledging the fact that some other users had a similar problem. The new card arrived today along with a $15 iTunes card for my troubles. Nice touch.
Now, here's the problem. The Geode card is thicker than a credit card. Today when I went to use it at an ATM it wouldn't fit! Not good. I'm sure it will swipe just fine at point of sale scanners, but not if you have to insert it into a slot. I haven't used the e-ink feature yet, but it appears that it should work. I'll let you know more soon, but I'm not sure if I'll be using the Geode much. From the time you launch the app and scan your fingerprint and the card is magnetized and the e-ink is updated takes about 25 seconds. I can pull a card from my wallet in 2-3 seconds. Additionally the 30-pin connector is swallowed up in the case, negating any peripherals such as the custom phone holder/charger on my dashboard. They give you a mini USB cord to charge without removing the Geode case, but that doesn't help much with peripherals, so I have to continuously put on and remove the Geode. Not sure how the plastic case will hold up to that.
I'll keep you posted. Hopefully they can address some of the issues that make the Geode not nearly as convenient as a wallet and actually unusable in some instances. Regards,
-Bob Stewart
Hi Rob,
I received my Geode from Icache one week ahead of the scheduled delivery date and right of the bat I found an issue. I received a faulty card that would not activate and show a data error with card not found. It turns out that they had a few reports already so they are going to ship me a new card on Monday. The device seem great but the right side seam where the top and bottom meets does not like to stay flush not to much of a big deal but I wish it would get and stay together like the other side. I found that you can charge the phone with the geode on but you can’t sync via the micro usb, and being that the geode will always be on for most people you would figure they would find a way to make it sync with out having to remove the geode (Time for me to look into air sync). Overall I like the feel and look of the geode on my phone, it feel like it is more firmly and secured on my hand and I don’t feel like it's going to fly out of my hand at any minute.
The fingerprint feature it great, it allows you to setup more than one finger to be use with the geode. It is pretty sensitive, my thumb had a little dirt on it which I had wiped away with a cloth and it would not recognized my thumb until I washed my hand.
All buttons are easily accessible they did a good job with that. The barcode generator looks great but I have not had a chance to use it yet.
Battery, yes it does make your battery diminish a little quicker not too much so I don’t mind it but do expect a change in how long your battery last. It would be nice if in the future they came with a battery backup also but that could be little bulkier.
The geode software very nice, you can tell they took the time to plan all the extra details like the credit card images and they way they would display on the screen. The cards when generated get a color assigned to them and I wish there was a way to assign a color of your choice maybe in the next release that would be an option.
Well that's all I have for now I am liking the geode a lot.
Regards,
Hector From Auburn NY.
Hi Rob
Hector again, I found that the goede will sync via the micro usb connection. What I found is that it depends on the micro usb cable you use if it will sync. I have a few of those cables so opted for using one of my own instead of the one that came with the device, while using the phone I had a another cable at work which was from samsung and that showed the phone on the computer actively connected but I did not have itunes at work.. So once home I tried the cable included with the unit and we have sync, the cable is branded monoprice and I bough from them before but I wonder what is different able all this 3 cables. The samsung will connect but will bot do a full sync it will disconnect half way through and the other cable only charges while the one that came with the unit from monoprice will work just fine. Can this be a propertary thing where we have to get the cables from the makers of the geode? In any case I wait ti hear what others say about the geode.
Thanks Hector from auburn ny.
Hi Rob,
icache sent me two geode cards so far and my geode fried both of the cards so now I have 3 useless geode cards. They are going to ship me a hole new unit with a new geode card so lets see how this one works out. They sent me a 15 dollars Itunes gift card with every piece of mail they sent so far so I am very happy with support plus they responded with in hours every time you send them a message. Just trying to keep you in the loop on my geode experience.

On a jailbroken and software unlocked 3gs it took me around 15 mins total but imessage and mms(i think) do not work. Iphone 4 it was around 10 mins total and everything works perfectly. Those 2 phones save me ~$120 a month. Now I am waiting to get out of this stupid verizon contract and straight talk will have another customer. Please pass this info on to everyone that you can. If the big 3 notice enough people leaving maybe they will improve service instead of just raising prices. Thanks Dan Aberdeen. Wa

Hi Rob, I used the info in the Fireworks Photography app that you gave out promo codes for recently to take this photo with my DSLR on the 4th of July, then imported it on to my iPad and added the words using A+ Signature App and cropped in Snapseed. REGARDS,

Episode 233 - Transcript
----------------------------
Verizon CFO Fran Shammo hinted at a major smartphone launch in Q4 of this year - IE the iPhone 2012. That was the highlight most posts started off with from the conference call - but really that is not news just a confirmation of what was expected by almost all.
What was news is this past quarter Verizon sold 2.7 million iPhones - vs 2.9 Million Android smartphones combined. So yes once again the iPhone was the best selling smartphone on Verizon. That the iPhone and ALL Android phones combined were so close in sales is amazing when you considerVerizon sales staff has been pushing new customers to 4G / LTE Android phones the entire quarter.
According to CNET overall Verizon sold 5.9 Mil smartphones. So that you don't need to go to your calc app - that means RIM sold 300k smartphones at Verizon last quarter - Yikes!! Ouch !!! oh my and simply Wow - but not in a good way wow. I should note - That looking at the transcript at Seeking Alpha - I could not confirm that 5.9 Mil number.
To put the 2.7 Mil iPhones into perspective Verizon sold 2.3 Mil in the year ago quarter - but sold 3.2 Mil in Q1 of 2012.
Since the last episode Apple has released iOS 6 beta 3. I think the biggest news of iOS 6 beta 3 is that it does something Apple said iOS 6 would not do - and that is allow VIP lists for the iPhone 3GS and also allows Shared Photo Streams. As I ranted before on the show those were a couple of the features I felt there was no technical reason for apple to exclude from the 3GS - it was purely a marketing decision - and well Apple thanks for making me look good - but more importantly I hope this change in the beta is permanent and that these features and also safari's offline reading list are there for 3GS owners when iOS 6 goes gold master. Right now the offline reading list is still not supported with the iOS 6 beta. Some of the other new things in iOS 6 beta 3 are new section in the settings app for the new maps app you can switch between miles and kilometers. You can toggle between english always or using the local language for Map Labels. And you can change the size of said labels. The maps in iOS 6 also appear much more detailed. In safari there are now icons for bookmarks, reading list and history instead of worded labels.
Overall these beta updates are more about making more stable and less about new features.
That said if you found anything in iOS 6 beta 3 - well you would not be able to tell me as that would break the NDA - So I can not ask you to call 206-666-6364 that's 206-moon-dog and give an update on any new features. Nope I can't ask you .
This next story comes out of the iOS 6 beta 3 update. Seems one other quote feature unquote of the beta 3 version is that it looks like AT&T might be getting ready to charge for FaceTime over cellular - like they try to do for tethering now. This is all based on error messages some running the iOS beta 3 got when trying to use FaceTime over cellular. Now only those on AT&T are getting this error message - those on Verizon and Sprint when they try to do a FaceTime call over cellular are not getting the error message.
This is where we miss steve jobs - if he was still with us and rumors started to abound about AT&T trying to essentially castrate FaceTime over 3G with additional BS charges - Steve would pick up the phone after his PA dialed it for him and then rip someone on AT&T's side a new one. Or at least that is what I think would happen. I imagine Tim Cook is a little more cordial that that. Still I hope Tim had that call made and I hope AT&T backs down from any plans to charge additionally for FaceTime over 3G.
When AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson was asked about this he said he had heard of the rumor and that it was too early to talk about pricing. So it seems AT&T may still be thinking about what it wants to do pricing wise - yup - sure would be nice right now to have steve around to kick butt and take names.
I really hopes AT&T comes to their senses on this one and decides not to screw over their customers. After all there is still Skype and Google+ hangouts that already work over Cellular.
Into the email bag.
Hi Rob,
In regards to the user asking about the Craigslist app I use craigspro+. They have a free and a paid version and I believe it is worth getting the paid app.
I hope that helps
Héctor from auburn ny.
Hey Rob!
Stop Danielle in from going to the Windows tablet thingy!

Thanks Kevin for the help.
Hi Rob,
Voice directions work in Canada with beta 3.
Though my dad says they have the street he works on (a one way street) going in the wrong direction. Do you know who I should report this to before there is an accident?
Regards,
Johnny Appleseed
Ummm - Yikes - Hopefully Apple is on that. Actually to report a problem when you flip up the map from the bottom right corner - you will see right above "print" in very small text a report a problem option - tap there and let them know of the street and the issue.
Thanks to John M - for the heads up on the app iExplorer. This is for your mac or pc - and lets you use your iOS device as a flash drive. It is a 100% freeware app and it works with your iOS device even if it is not jailbroken. So no need to jailbreak to use this free app. This is per the caller / emailer a couple of shows back that had asked for an app like this for windows - but in this case there is also a version for mac. Again it is free - Interestingly tonight they had a message on their site saying it was not available to download - but if you then go to the downloads page - it was there. Looks like an update is coming in about 3 days as there is a countdown timer on the iExplorer page - but again click on downloads at the top and find iExplorer and click download and that worked for me.
The also had a banner on their site saying they are making their iOS App - Awesome files available for free one day only - July 20th - so hopefully you are listening today on the 20th and if you are this is normally a $4.99 app that allows you to manage your documents and multimedia files on your iOS device. Again it is free just on July 20th so jump on this one now.
Thanks again John M for the heads up on this one.
I as you know avoid most of the legal fight stories - but there is one story that comes from the fight between Apple and Samsung - that is definitely worthy of mentioning - it seems in the legal documents for one of the legal fights between these two - some photos of early designs of an Apple Tablet have come out. This is a device that became the precursor for the iPhone and then the iPad. Initially it looked a lot like a white mac book - but with a touch screen, And these pics go back to 2002. So if you are interested in seeing what the great great grand father for the iPad looked like go to the article titled Earliest known photos of an iPad in the show notes for ep 233.
Each year there are cases for the iPhone that are released prior to the next iPhone that supposedly show what the new iPhone would be shaped like and well 2012 is no different - with a few cases already popping up for the iPhone 2012 or as they so wrongly call it the iPhone 5. Interestingly the photos of supposed iPhone 2012's on Alibaba show the standard config for the bottom of the unit - i.e. 30 pin dock connector. Of course it just might be old photos from the current iPhone 4S.
When prepping for my speech this past week over at KFest I reviewed my speech from last year at this time - and last year I guaranteed them the photos of the then supposed 5th gen iPhone being shown exclusively on This is my next which became the verge - were BS and that is not what the 5th gen iPhone would look like - I promised them that and said the 5th gen iPhone would look exactly like the iPhone 4 - and of course I was right. This year - I am not so sure what the iPhone 2012 will look like - I am leaning towards the photo from 9to5 mac that showed a slightly longer iPhone with a metal back. That has a 4 inch screen - but again I am just not sure what it will be other than being afraid it may have the new smaller dock connector. About the only thing I am 99.9999% sure of is the name will not be iPhone 5. And any site that calls it the iPhone 5 well they loose lots of cred in my book.
Hi Rob, Just heard your latest episode stating that there is an NBC Olympics app that'll stream live video of the olympics. Looking at the information, the streams are only available in the IS and it appears that you'd also need a tv, cable or satellite service to be able to use it. There is another app by the good old BBC here in the UK that also streams all the live olympics events, and it's free and it doesn't appear to require any other services. The app also does not state that it is UK only, so I'd assume it will be available to use in the US aswell. Check it out. Keep up the podcast. Gary
Hi Rob.
I am a consultant with Acme Crowbars and i would like to provide a general reason why android might be more for calls than iPhone. Acme provides us with corporate phones. For three or four years, I have had my personal iPhone for everything and an ACME issued phone for calls. Some of the ACME issued phones were android, but not iPhone. So I, like a lot of my colleagues, have an ACME Issued android phones we use for work calls and personal iPhones we use for everything else. More and more I see many people carrying two phone devices and using them the same way I do. I downloaded three or four apps when i got my android phone but that is it. My iPhone is holding 150+ apps. regards E P

Hi Rob, my name is Luis, from McAllen, Tx. I am still to find a good stylus for the ipad. How come they only make soft rounded-tip styluses? They seem to not slide freely on the surface of the ipad. Do you know of a stylus that has a sharper tip in order to have more precision on what you write or draw? regards,
Luis
And I send that question out to the artists in the audience - what is your favorite stylus's today for drawing on your iOS device. It has been a couple of years since we did this subject so will be interesting to see what stylus's people are using today. My mom still uses the pogo stylus's - that is the type you don't like.
Thanks to Mark H for this next one. And it is a Kickstarter Project for the photogs in the audience. It is called eye click - one word spelled e y e c l i c k. It is a way of doing a remote click of the camera for the iPhone. And it also has a periscope for connecting to the case it comes with to allow the back camera to take photos on the screen side - so you can use the back camera when looking at the screen and get the better resolution photo. So for just the case a it costs $30 I think. And with the HD lens it costs $35 and if you want the remote clicker the HD lens and the case it costs you $65 and you also get a stand. They also are stating they will have another one that will be compatible with the 6th gen iPhone - iPhone 2012 or as they wrongly call it the iPhone 5 - ok rob get over it already.
Anyway if you are looking for a way to take remote pics with your iPhone and to get the back camera to take pics on your side - then this is for you - if you can figure out the pricing. This is another one of those projects with way to many pricing options - 22 pricing options to be specific - yikes. At this point their goal of $20k has not been reached probably because no one can figure out which option to choose - they are at just $9k with 9 days to go - this one closes on Jul 29th at 1:39 AM ET.
If you like this one then start spreading the news. Again this project is the eyeClick over at Kickstarter.
Staying with the kickstart theme - Thanks to Tony for the heads up on this next one. It is one I actually pledged once I saw the video. What is this amazing device that it was able to pry $40 from my tight fists. It is the Pair with Pear. That is P A I R with P E A R - it is a bluetooth dongle that plugs into the 30 pin docks - but not at the iOS side - rather at the accessory side - this lets you pair your iOS device via bluetooth to say your old bose dock that is sitting in the den. This one had a goal of $40k - I say Had as in past tense as they raced past their goal and are at $100k now and have 52 days to go. This one closes on Sep 10th with an estimated dlvry of Nov. So if say in the future Apple does go away from the 30 pin dock connector - you will be able to plug this device into your speaker with the 30 pin connector and still get music to play. Anyway - more on this one in the future. For now go to kickstarter and search for Pair with Pear or just look for the link in the show notes for ep 233.
I have not mentioned this - but for those of you that live on Facebook - I have a Today in iOS fan page go to Facebook dot com slash today in iOS - and one thing you would see there is a picture I uploaded yesterday which shows the iPad and the iPad Mini - it shows the difference in the sizes with a hand on each device. This photo was created for the speech I did as a little spoof - My son basically has the same hands as me so I had him put his hand on the original iPad and I put my hand on the new iPad and then shrunk my photo to match the size of my hand with his hand. That is the type of photo that typically winds up on BGR. Anyway there is a lot of chatter recently about the iPad Mini. And that Apple will launch it soon. Almost to the point of it now be a foregone conclusion it will be launched in the next couple of months. I say not so fast. Now do I think Apple is working on a 7 Inch tablet - absolutely - and a 6 inch and probably a bunch of other sizes. But the latest rash of rumors comes from articles at the Times and bloomberg and others - in mainstream press. Where it has not come from is the ones that usually get it first - i.e. All things D or the Loop or Daring fireball. I just think at this point we are looking at 2013 before said iPad mini or iPod touch maxi. I was recently quoted in an article over on Forbes titled A 7-inch iPad question mark not so fast. If you want to hear more of my thoughts and those of Erika Morphy.
Speaking of my Facebook page - a big shout out thanks to Keith Paul Jr Kelly for helping bring in the like love to the page. If you are on Facebook - again go to Facebook dot com slash today in iOS and like the page.
A key reason for all the chatter about the 7 inch iPad is that google just launched their 7 inch sell it for a loss Nexus 7 tablet and from reviews this is the first Android tablet that feels good and works good and is priced less than $299. Actually it is priced at $199 for the 8GB version and $249 for the $16 GB version - which means an iPad mini with 16 GB would be in the $299 range. It is yet to be seen if this 7 inch tablet from Google will catch on and sell in any real quantities. But from reviews so far - including one from MG Sigler - their reviews have been positive. And up until now 7 inch tablet reviews have been well you get what you pay for type reviews. Now the questions is if Apple will move on the 7 inch market because of this. And I would expect them to wait until after the holidays to make that move - unless the nexus 7 just starts eating into iPad sales. And so far no other tablet has ever done that.
Hi Rob,
What's your take on this? regards John
And this that john does speak was a link to an article over at popular mechanics called Can you use the same power adapter for the iPhone and iPad?
The article starts out stating the official answer from Apple is YES. However the article then asks and tries to answer should you. They kind of make it sound like if you charge your iPhone with your iPad charger you might over stress the iPhone battery and over time degrade the performance - maybe kinda sorta in theory with out knowing how the iPhone fully is designed - type answer. And they end their advice saying get the two year warranty and charge it how you like and if the battery starts to falter get it replaced.
So my thoughts on this. I already use my iPad charger to charge my iPhones and vice versa. I don't worry about it - never have. And the battery life on my 5 year old iPhone is still pretty darn good. One thing I think apple knows better than anyone else - and that is batteries.
If you want to read the whole article look for Can I Use the Same Power Adapter for iPhone and iPad? in the show notes for ep 233.
Hi Rob,
This should be obvious to me but can you sync a jail broken iPhone to iTunes and backup as normal
Thanks
Steve from AZ
Hi Steve - I get this question quite a bit - yes you can still sync a jailbroken iOS device to your computer just like you did before - jail breaking add features it does not take any away.
Hi Rob,
I have a original IPhone 8G I accidentally upgraded recently to 3.3 frpm Itunes. my Itunes screen showing Sim card is not supported on this phone. I used to have it unlocked - now it seem like I'm stuck with this problem that I can not unlock my phone and jailbreak my original IPhone. I try to search on the web of any way to unlock this my iPhone . but unfortunately i can not find a web site unlocking the original IPhone.
Can you give me advise or links on the web on how to unlocking and jail breaking my Original IPhone.
Regards
Albert H
Hi Albert I checked he links I had for the original iPhone for jail breaking and unlocking and it seems they all no longer work - so I will send this out to anyone in the audience if you know of a way that still works to jailbreak and unlock your original iPhone - please let us know - 206-666-6364 - that's 206 moon-dog or email us at today in iOS at GMAIL dot com.
Hi rob. I was updating my phone and download files from dropbox and the phone hung up and dropped off wifi. I got an email the next day saying I have been tethering from AT&T and it state that they were gonna upgrade me on next bill cycle. I explained to them that I was downloading files from my dropbox after an upgrade. The lady insisted that i was using a tethering and suggested I should update my phone. Even I already told her I did. So anyway my point is this is proof that they don't detect an tether up but a surge in network traffic. I'm in unlimited but average around 3gb per month. So I went from 1gb to over 3 overnight. Now I will be slow down for 3 weeks when It usually happen with a couple days left.
Regards, Jose M from Virginia beach, Va. Please say happy birthday to my girlfriend on the air :-) (Sofia) we love the show.. Take care!
Hi Sofia - Happy Birthday. Also happy birthday to my Brother which his birthday is on the 22nd.
More of those legal stories I don't like but this one has a strange twist - A UK judge has order Apple to put a notice on its site stating that Samsung did not copy any aspect of the iPad when it designed the Galaxy Tab 10.1 Device. This is the same judge that said consumers would have no trouble telling difference because the Samsung tablet was quote not as cool unquote as the iPad. Ouch. But now Apple has to mention on its site and in ads in the UK that Samsung did not copy the iPAd. If I was Apple I would make lemonade out of these lemons and put in the quote from the judge - and have an ad that says - We at Apple acknowledge that Samsung did not copy the iPad - the Galaxy is no where near as cool - according to the UK judicial system and well using the Galaxy tab will get your shunned by your peers cause acne and maybe even bed wetting - were not sure - as we are cool since we use the iPad and well so are you - since no one really buys the galaxy tab anyway. Or some wording similar to that. Oh yes if you are keep track at home this is the same product that was recently banned from sale in the US by one our judges and the one that Samsungs lawyers in Australia could not even tell which was their product when the judge held up both the Galaxy Tab and iPad next to each other - just a scant 10 feet away. But still legally speaking - the Tab is not as cool as the iPad.
Thanks to John and Oscar for the heads up on this next one - which is a post over at Gigaom - that tries to help break down the new complex pricing plans for shared data plans from both AT&T and Verizon. Essentially as we mentioned before if you are with Verizon and you have unlimited data now - you can keep that plan when you upgrade to the iPhone 2012 - if and only if you are willing to pay full price for the new phone. Yikes. AT&T does not do that draconian measure - yet. If you are a potential new iPhone customer and looking for a carrier in the US - you can read this post and then at the end remember this - Sprint - they are the only one of the big 3 now making it easy to understand plans and pricing - as they offer unlimited everything plans still. Which is why I have been long on Sprint stock since the beginning of the year. If you confuse consumers - they will go elsewhere - remember when the iPhone first launched one of the nice things about it was a very simple price plan from AT&T that Apple helped dictate. That really made things nice for the consumers. Now AT&T and Verizon are trying to make it business as usual once again. Just sayin - Anyway look for the link titled. Explaining AT&T and Verizons’ complex shared-data plans in the show notes for ep 233 over at today in iOS dot com.
Oscar actually asked the following
Hello Rob,
I getting married next month and my future wife and I are going to
combine our phones bills into one,
My question is would it be worth it to get either AT&T or Verizon's
mobile share plan which is suppose to included tethering, and
give up my unlimited data plan? On average I don't use a whole
lot of data I jut like the fact that I have no limit on my data plan.
Any thoughts on this would greatly help thanks a lot for all that
you do Rob.
Hi Oscar - combining everything when you get married is usually
advice - except this time I am not sure. I have some AT&T people
in the audience - let me know your thoughts on what Oscar should do
Same from the Verizon folks - although I am going to guess you
would say drop the AT&T plan and go with Verizon.
My only advice at this point is wait until October before you do
anything.
Hi Rob,
I don't know about you or anybody else, but I have one major issue with AT&T and Verizon's shared data plans. I have the same issue with any of Sprint's current smartphone plans. They save lots of money for
people who use their phones for talking and/or texting, but for people like me that barely use my phone as a phone, they are a lot more expensive. My wife and I roll over more than 400 minutes of our 500 minute plan, and we rarely send text messages except to each other, which is free between iPhones. No matter which new shared plan I select from AT&T or Verizon, it would cost us at least $30 more per month. The same is true if we wanted to switch to Sprint. I think the carriers are figuring out that there are many options that don't require texting, voice or data to use an iPhone so they are throwing in the voice plans and basically charging for data only now. At least AT&T has large data plans now.

Hi Rob,
Today's mission: find someone who actually owns one of these 600k Nokia Symbian phones in North America. They must be a resident, not a tourist.
Talk about a scavenger hunt!
Have a great day!
John
Hi Rob,
Recently I hit a deer and so I had to get a loaner which happens to be a ford fiesta with Microsoft sync and I plugged in the iPhone and all works great. However I also have a windows phone so I said to myself let's see how the sync works with the windows phone. To my surprise sync will not even recognize the windows 7 phone isn't that something a Microsoft os not working with Microsoft windows phone7 yet it work great with the iPhone. Regards,
Héctor from auburn ny
Guess the best response is Doooohhhh
Thanks for the feed back hector.
One last story - and that is of the China Launch of the iPad today - early reports are so far void of throwing eggs or other items and it seems rather organized and sans drama. The question to be seen is this due to a lack of interest or more because of the online ordering program apple implemented this time around or because those that really wanted the iPad got it on the grey market already. In any case this seems to be so far the first chinese launch that did not involve pushing, shoving, throwing, breaking or some combination there of.
As always if you were at this role out of the Apple iPad - please email or call in with your experiences.
