Thanks JEFF for the music and folks I will put the full song at the end of the episode. I also want to thank ROD for sending in the Artwork for today's show. ROD had the following to say.
Hi Rob,
I am not an artist or graphic designer by trade but I do like to 'have a go' and see what I can knock together.
Since buying the iPad Air in November of last year it has truly enhanced my creative passion and made it so much more portable and convenient. Also thanks to its great wealth of productivity apps that I just in general couldn't get from Android it has enabled me to shelve my laptop. I bought and tried the Microsoft Surface RT tablet, various Android ones too. Not even close!
FOR THIS ARTWORK Apps I used where:
- iDraw. An excellent Vector art program - I used this for the layout and design of shapes, images and the shading effects
- iPhoto. (Photo editing) this I used to remove the sterile feel to the draft image
- Snapseed. Photo editing) I used this for the stylised border
This is first time I have tried anything like this on the iPad it was great fun and for me very intuitive.
Regards
Rod Bailey, Bristol, England.
ROD Thanks again for sending in this artwork and folks you can see ROD'S artwork in the Tii App in the extras for ep 299 or if you subscribe via iTunes on your computer as the album artwork and also as a stand alone post in the VIP section and at Facebook.com/todayinios.
If you have some artwork and or music you have created on your iOS device that you would like to share with the audience please email it to me at today in iOS at gmail dot com and please make sure to include which app or apps you used to create said artwork and or music.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote “I think this will appeal to the Apple acolytes, but this is essentially just a really big iPod Touch. book lovers will continue to opt for lighter, cheaper e-readers like theAmazon Kindle, while people looking for a small Web-ready computer would gravitate toward netbooks. unquote

Ok - last year I blew it with the NCAA Tournament bracket - no I am not talking about my picks - that is a given - I mean about getting one set up for the show.
So this year I set it up early - look for the link in the show notes - but the group name is todayinios - and the password is tii
Please join and remember - you need to submit your picks before Tuesdays first games in Dayton. So picks must be in prior to lets say 5:00 PM ET on Tuesday the 18th.
Again if you have the CBS app or goto the website - our group name is todayinios - and the password is tii
Winners of the contest will get free app promo codes when they want them and I will see if I can get anything else donated to give away. But most importantly - you will get the pride in knowing you won this shows bracket - up to 3 entries per person.
And once again - you must submit prior to 5:00 PM ET on Tuesday the 18th.

Ok - now into the news - and it is a good thing I decided not to record last night - because today Apple released iOS 7.1 Finally.
Before you upgrade to iOS 7.1 I always always recommend - one you wait a few days to make sure there are no issues.
Two follow these directions:
Sync over all your photos you may have taken to iPhoto or whatever you use - you don't want to loose any recent photos.
Next force quit all your open apps
Then sync and back up your iOS device to your computer.
Then go to Settings and Reset and select Reset network settings.
Once your iOS device reboots - rejoin your Wifi network - which if it has a password you need to re-enter.
Then go and do the upgrade.
Following the above steps does seem to make upgrades go better and with fewer issues.
As always if you are a jail breaker - stay away from the update - and really - what does it hurt to stay away until next week to see if there are issues with this update even if you are not a jail breaker. Don't be in such a rush. Plus some are reporting looong download times this evening - as the masses are starting to download the update - so now you really are best waiting until next week.
That said for you all - I have upgraded a few of my devices today.
I upgraded the iPhone 4, iPhone 5S and iPad Mini Retina - so far so good with them. However I could not get the download to work for my 3rd Gen iPad - kept getting a network Error and now it says 6 hours remaining for the download which is what it said over an hour ago. So yeah - that one may be waiting a bit before it is upgraded to 7.1 - So you might not have any choice but to wait. Not a good idea to upgrade once things bog down like that. So be patient - wait until the next episode next Monday to hear how things are going.
Per what is new in iOS 7.1 -
well as you know if you have been listening for the past few months - I have been using the beta for a few revs and we have talked about new features - but if you are like me you probably forgot what most if not all of them were. So I went back into the show notes for past episodes and here are the key highlights of the changes for iOS 7.1
1. At least for me - iOS 7.1 fixed the issue of crashing and re-booting. so that goes to the top of the list.
2. There is also improved contrast overall - where you have the option to reduce transparency turning the Dock and folder backgrounds a dark grey - so there are actually two options to chose - one called Reduce Transparency and the other called Darken Colors. This is under Settings - General - Accessibility - Increase Contrast. I actually saw a couple of people not liking how the new dock looks - and this is where you change that. Also under this category new to 7.1 is Reduce White Point. This slightly darkens the screen.
3. There are some camera updates - There is also a new HDR auto mode. Which it then looks at all 3 exposures and picks the best one for you. And if you select HDR now - it remains on the next time you open the camera app. Even after force quitting the camera app. Now you can also choose wether or not to upload all your burst mode photos.
4. Settings for touch ID and passcode have been bumped up to the main menu of the Settings App. No longer in General.
5. There is a new option to turn on button shaped in settings -- General and then accessibility.
6. There are new iPad wallpapers and for all iOS devices that support parallax - There is now a new option to turn on or off Parallax i.e. motion when selecting wallpapers for the iPad. the option to disable parallax for the iPad Wallpaper is now called Perspective zoom instead of reduce motion - when in the Wallpaper area - but over in Settings - General - Accessibility - yeah there you still turn on Reduce Motion to turn off parallax. So one place you turn on to turn off and another you turn off to turn off and they are called two different things - Pretty clear to me. Obviously Apple has been recruiting from the Android ranks again.
7. The iPad has gained a new Siri Voice gender option for the UK, Australia, Japan and Mandarin. As is normal with better sounding Siri - you will need for your iOS device to be connected via Wifi and plugged into a power source for it to download the improved siri voice files.
8. The Music App also now has new shuffle and repeat buttons that stand out much more.
9. CarPlay support - more on that later.
10. With siri - keep holding down the home button while you speak and release when done.
11. Improvements to Calendars to add a list of items under the month - when you tap on a day.
Other observations from the betas and the release of 7.1 - Animations are noticeably faster. Hearing that from many that just upgraded. There are a bunch of new animations and buttons in 7.1 from slide to unlock to powering down. There are also other fit and finish type changes with updates to fonts and text sizes. There is a redesigned shift and caps lock keys on the keyboard as well.
That said was one thing that went away that was in beta 1 of 7.1 that never came back and that is the option to enable Dark Keyboard. That was a nice feature and not sure why apple removed it - hopefully it will be back in the future.
Now that is not ALL the changes for iOS 7.1 - just the key ones in my mind - if there are some others I missed you think should have been covered or interesting to you - let me know - 206-666-6364 - 206-moon-dog - or send an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com and speaking of emails Lets go to some of your early feedback on 7.1 so far.

Hi, Rob. Great podcast, but I wish they were more frequent.
Just to let you know, again, that the calendar bug I reported months ago still persists in iOS 7.1:
- Year 1921 does not exist!
- Years 1920 and earlier do get their calendars screwed up
Yep, I'm refusing to time travel to witness the first human flight until Apple gets these calendars fixed.
BTW, I reported this bug to Apple, but they never answered back. Is there another way to report this?
Regards,
Fabio E
Hi Rob,
this is new for iOS 7.1. This came up when I plugged my phone into my computer. I get a message that says
QuoteDo you want to allow this computer to access information on Ben's iPhone 5C? If you don't allow access, you will not be able to manage or sync your iPhone with this computer. unquote

http://recode.net/2014/02/28/apples-tv-hobby-is-now-a-billion-dollar-business/
And that is some Apple made by saying Apple TV has generated over 1 Billion with a B dollars from Apple TV in 2013 - so quickly people thought that meant they sold a billion dollars worth of Apple TV's something Apple quickly clarified - NO - it means that the Sales of the Apple TV units COMBINED with purchases people made from them - are greater than 1 Billion dollars. Also 2013 - does not actually mean Jan 1st to Dec 31st 2013 - but rather Apple fiscal 2013 which ran from beginning of Oct 2012 to the end of September 2013. So it did not include this past holiday season.
That all clarified - the News really is about Tim Cook saying quote it's a little more difficult to call it a hobby these days" unquote. This he said at the shareholders meeting.
17:55
http://qz.com/182763/apple-tv-is-apples-fastest-growing-product/
Right now it is looking like Apple has sold about 28 Million Apple TVs since the original unit back in 2007 - that compares to about 8 million for Roku it closest competitor in this space.
18:26
http://www.geeky-gadgets.com/new-apple-tv-to-feature-games-and-apps-rumor-04-03-2014/
The fact Tim Cook is talking about Apple TV and saying it is no longer a hobby is a pretty good sign we will see a new Apple TV sooner rather than latter - well that and the fact we are way over due for a new device - which means more rumors on the 4th gen Apple TV. From the Financial times comes this blurb.
quote The significantly redesigned hardware will include greater support for video-games, already a popular pastime on its iPhones and iPads, as well as other new features which could include bringing its App Store to the TV set for the first time.
The release, which was delayed from the end of last year, could come "any week now", this source said. Apple has not commented on the rumors. unquote
Apple also recently had a one week promotion where if you purchased an Apple TV from Apples brick and mortar stores and online at Apple.com - you would get a $25 iTunes gift card. Clearly that looks like a nice inventory clearing promotion.
So what is coming first - the NCAA Final 4 or a new Apple TV?
Note Jim Dalrymple at the loop recently said this was not an indication of a new Apple TV coming. But a simple Nope to speculation this means a new Apple TV is coming - leaves a lot to be answered - is that Nope it is not coming when the one week promo is over - or not coming this month or not coming period? Because well eventually it seems a new Apple TV is coming and why else would Apple offer a promotion for Apple TV if not to clear some inventory - this is Apple we are talking about - how often do they do promotions like this - ummm - answer would be almost never.
Any way I think there is a new Apple TV coming sooner rather than later - and would be shocked if it is not hear before end of May and really surprised if not here by Mid April.

We have a new Advertiser on the show this month and that is lynda dot com - and if you go to lynda dot com slash tii - that is l y n d a dot com slash tii - you will get a free 7 day trial.
I often get questions about how to learn to create an iOS app - and Lynda dot com has easy to follow high quality Video tutorials on how to program iOS apps - but lets say you don't know Objective C - well they have courses teaching Objective C - but lets say you don't know much or anything about programming - well they have courses that teach the fundamentals of programming too. For example first you could go through the Foundations of Programming Fundamentals or Maybe this is for your kids - then there is the Foundations of Programming - Programming for Kids. After you get through that class then you or they are on to the course Objective-C Essential Training - and then when done with those - you are ready for the course iOS App development Essential Training. And those are just 4 courses out of over 2,000 to choose from which cover not just programming but also Graphic design, and Software use - like Excel or Adobe Creative Suite or Final cut pro, courses on Business skills like SEO and Project management, Even courses for Photography and Negotiating. Which combined could lead to an interesting line of work. Hello TMZ. AND The great part about lynda.com is that you get access to All the courses - think netflix for training you new skills. You learn at your pace and your schedule. And the video courses come with transcripts - that is huge. I am going to be brushing up on my Objective C and I am going to get my oldest son started on the intro for the Programming for kids.
But you don't need to take my word for the breadth and quality of the tutorials - you can check them out right now for yourself for free for 7 days by going to lynda dot com slash tii that is

Let me now what tutorials you look at and what you learn. And of course if you do go the route of developing your own app and get it up on the app store - let me know and we will promote it here on the show. Thanks Lynda for sponsoring this show.

http://recode.net/2014/03/02/apples-ios-in-the-car-becomes-carplay
-due-in-models-later-this-year/
Ok - So Apple TV is no longer a Hobby for Apple and Tim Cook - well you know what they say Everyone needs a Hobby - especially CEO's. And rather then endurance racing or triathlons - it seems Tim's new Hobby is Cars. Or more precisely - CarPlay - which Apple just unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show - because someone else in Apple has skiing as a hobby no doubt. CarPlay is iOS in the Car - that apple talked about at WWDC back in June - so maybe unveiled is not the correct term.
Here is what Apple had to say about CarPlay quote March 3, 2014―Apple® today announced that leading auto manufacturers are rolling out CarPlay, the smarter, safer and more fun way to use iPhone® in the car. CarPlay gives iPhone users an incredibly intuitive way to make calls, use Maps, listen to music and access messages with just a word or a touch. Users can easily control CarPlay from the car’s native interface or just push-and-hold the voice control button on the steering wheel to activate Siri® without distraction. Vehicles from Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo will premiere CarPlay to their drivers this week, while additional auto manufacturers bringing CarPlay to their drivers down the road include BMW Group, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan Motor Company, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota Motor Corp. unquote
Apple also said quote CarPlay gives drivers access to all of their music, podcasts, audiobooks and iTunes Radioâ„ with easy navigation through listening choices from the car’s built-in controls or simply by asking Siri to pull up what you’d like to hear. CarPlay also supports select third-party audio apps including Spotify and iHeartRadio, so you can listen to your favorite radio services or sports broadcast apps while driving. unquote
Apple did not mention it in their press release - but Stitcher radio and Beast Music are listed on their website for Carplay was working as well.
It will be later in 2014 before we starts seeing any of these cars made
available and probably 2016 or later before all those mentioned roll this out. That said - it is a start - and well like I said Tim cook needs a new hobby. To me automotive interfaces that interact and are driven by your smartphone make more sense than getting another data plan for your car.

Thanks to Dex for this next one. Well it seems Apple and Sam Sung have officially split. No Not Samsung as in the evil company from South Korea - I mean Mr First name Sam - last name Sung - whom was mentioned some time ago as working at an Apple store in Vancouver BC. Some speculated that Sam sung were responsible in wooing away Mr Sung and I did hear from the Lawyers at the evil Sammy sung - A Mr Nicholas Atteen and Mr Alexander Keyhol - and they said they were not responsible for making Mr Sung leave Apple and have no knowledge of his whereabouts.
Good luck Mr Sung.

Hi Rob,
I had the same issue which the user in 298 reported about the faded songs on his device. I had tried to download my 1100+ songs from iCloud to my new iPhone 5S and only half of them downloaded, so I went to the Genius Bar, who told me to talk to the Apple support people by phone. After about half an hour, it was discovered that these songs were hidden, though I had not actually hidden them myself: must be something with setting up a new iOS device. Hidden items can be restored through iTunes (click on your login in the store, then "view account," then under the section "iTunes in the Cloud" select "manage" next to "Hidden Purchases") or on iOS (iTunes Store, scroll to bottom, tap on account login, sign in, then tap "Hidden Purchases"). Hope this helps and love the show.

Hi Rob,
A caller wanted to know what Bluetooth works well with Siri.
I used to have this one http://www.myblueant.com/products/headsets/t1/index.php
What I loved about it was that you can listen to podcasts or music on it, and it does work with Siri and multiple devices. Something to keep in mind though, you must hold the button until it asks you what you want to do, that is the device itself, not Siri. If you tell it phone commands then it immediately launches Siri. Not perfect, but I could listen to podcasts playing on my iPad and if I got a call or a text on my iPhone I would still get them. Read the manual if you set it up because it does matter which device is the first one paired with it.
Regards,
Jason H
Hi Rob, this is in response to your request in the last podcast concerning what Bluetooth devices we use to connect to our iOS devices in the car. I tried a few and then stayed with Belkin's AirCast Auto Hands Free. It was super easy to install. It draws power from the cigarette lighter plug and connects to the cars sound system through the AUX port. My son uses the same device and connects to his car's sound system through a cassette player adapter. I have found the AirCast Auto extremely easy to use for placing and receiving phone calls, for playing music from my music library, and podcasts from my pod cast player and music from online music players, and for communicating with Siri to do all of the above and even more. I have even dictated iMessages with only a few miscues due to similar sounding words. All-in-all I am very pleased.
This device switches easily between music or podcasts and phone calls and back again when the call is over.
The AirCast Auto lists for $80 on Belkin's website but you can beat that price by shopping around at other online stores.
I can highly recommend the AirCast Auto by Belkin.

Thanks to everyone that has joined.
We had over 90 posts since the last episode. Of those most replied to post there was one from Angel Voice that asked a question about upgrading from an iPhone 5 and remembering talk about S phones were the better time to upgrade. So essentially here is my thoughts on this - the upgrade from the 3G to 3GS - was much bigger than that from the Original to the 3G. The jump from the 4 to 4S was also more than from the 3GS to the 4. If you don't count the physical changes - which when the 4 first came out were an issue anyway. And again the different from the 5 to the 5S was much bigger than the different from the 4S to the 5. It was very hard for me to recommend anyone upgrade from a 4S to a 5 - but I don't pause to recommend going from a 4S to a 5S. But if you question is if you should wait a full year after the iPhone 6 comes out for the 6S - well at this time it is impossible to say - past performance / history is not promise for future results. Heck if the iPhone 6 has a sapphire screen and a 4K video recording feature - I am pretty sure I will bite the bullet and upgrade a year early. But I will not know for sure until Apple announces the next iPhone and that is not likely until some time in early to mid September.
Back to the Google+ community - well there were dozens and dozens of other posts - and all in an Android bois free zone. Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

end-135142614.html
Some other Apple employee news - Apple announced that Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer will retire and hand the reins to Luca Maestri in September - which is when Apples fiscal year ends. Mr Oppenheimer helped grow Apples cash horde from sub 10 Billion to in excess of 160 billion dollars. He also balanced the books when revenue went from 8 Billion a year to over 170 Billion. Guess it is always easy to balance the books when there is more money coming in than going out. Or at least a lot less stressful - if not easier. Mr Luca Maestri we look forward to hearing from you on future Apple Quarterly conference calls.

I mentioned Earlier the Tim cook was talking to Investors at Apples Investors meeting and Mr Cook had a great great quote at said Investors meeting - It was:
quote If you want me to do things only for ROI reasons, you should get out of this stock. unquote
By itself - that is just a great quote - it gets the extra great when put into context - Seems there was some idiot investor fund manager from NCPPR - they had pushed a proposal requiring Apple to disclose the cost of sustainability programs and be more transparent about its relationships with sustainability groups. That proposal was squashed like a bug. But then the guy from NCPPR questioned the effect of Apples sustainability programs on its bottom line and demanded Cook promise to do only things that are profitable - read socially irresponsible. It is not known if this guy was bald and stroking a white persian cat while saying all this - but it sounds like he could have been.
Anyway Mr Tim then angrily responded with that great great quote - quote If you want me to do things only for ROI reasons, you should get out of this stock. unquote
Companies that only focus on the bottom line quickly loose focus on the company and their products and their customers and their future.
Kudos Timothy Donald Cook on keeping some things more important than just the bottom line.

Thanks to Cretan for sending me a link for a little more pretext on Tim cooks comments from seeking alpha quote
"When we work on making our devices accessible by the blind," he [Tim Cook] said, "I don't consider the bloody ROI." He said that the same thing about environmental issues, worker safety, and other areas where Apple is a leader.
He didn't stop there, however, as he looked directly at the NCPPR representative and said, unquote - well he actually said that great great quote - but now you have even more pretext on it.

http://blog.laptopmag.com/iphone-5s-price-drop
Thanks to all that sent in links per this next story - and that is the iPhone 5S price has been dropped at Walmart to $119 for the 16 GB version. This offer looks to be in place for the rest of March - kind of a march madness event I guess. Basically the price is now close to where the 5C price was when it launched - yeah if you are looking for a new iPhone right now - the $119 price is pretty nice - that said I would recommend higher storage of at least 32 GB and really the 64 GB is my first recommendation. It shows the Higher capacities on line at walmart.com - but it does not show if they are then $229 and $329. In any case you need to check with your local walmart to get this deal.

http://seekingalpha.com/article/2057243-apple-outguns-intel
Thanks to Cretan for this next one - that compares some bench mark tests for Intels new Z3480 processor - that is their new top of the line mobile processor. And there should be lots of quotes thrown in that last sentence. Because top of the line for Intel and mobile - yeah - not so top of the line over all. The bench mark score for the Z3480 was 1327 - with higher better. That is just about the A6 processor - yes the one for the iPhone 5. Not the A7 found in the iPhone 5S which was twice the score of the new Z3480 from intel - yikes. Which is why you are not likely to see that processor in all to many devices any time soon or at all.
43:32
http://www.macrumors.com/2014/03/05/a8-chip-underway-tsmc/
This leads us into some rumors about the A8 chip the one likely to be powering the next gen iPhones and iPads - likely to launch early fall. Well in the past Sammy has been building the chips for Apple - but rumors are coming up that this time around the A8 will actually be built by TSMC with their 20 nanometer processing. And it would be a quad core 64 bit CPU with quad core Graphics processor as well.
Initially it was thought that TSMC and Sammy would split the production of the A8 - but now the rumors are saying it is all TSMC's business. Mind you last year a very similar rumor was spread just about this time of the year with regards to as then not announced A7 processor - and well that turned out to be a bogus rumor just as this one may also be.
But will be interesting to see what apple has in store for the A8 processor - as yet there is still nothing out there up to par with the A7 processor when it comes to benchmark tests.

student-hackers-make-apples-ios-7-siri-way-more-useful-spotify-support
Interesting article from Jonny Evans at computer world titled - Student hackers make Apple's iOS 7 Siri way more useful with Spotify support
Essentially four freshman students The university of Pennsylvania have hacked Apple's iOS 7s voice assistant to control third-party apps with Siri without jailbreaking their iPhone.
They were able to show siri turning on and off Hue lights - and playing songs on spotify - which sounds cool - but it is not something you will be able to use now. As it requires a man in the middle hack - essentially they called their hack google plex - and you would say google plex turn on the lights - and what happens is siri is hearing google as the action and plex turn on the lights - and their hack is to get your phone set up with a spoofed DNS s that requests from siri to search go to their servers and not googles. So their server gets the request for plex turn off the lights - and it performs the action - while they say this will be used with other apps - it seems - it is just a little to techie for most users.
Cool demo and genius implementation - but I don't see it overly practical - but hopefully Apple sees this and works to make Siri even more useful and allows in iOS 8 - more control from siri.
Links in the show notes to the article at computer world and also to the site these guys set up - better than siri dot com.

Hi Rob,
I really like the existing size of the iPhone. I have an iPhone 5 and will be buying the 6 if it is anything smaller than a Note! If they made it that big, which I'm sure they won't, I'll get a 5s. Speaking of Samsung (boooo and hisss), if you watched the Oscars you saw Ellen using a Samsung for all those selfies. if you look online, you'll see as soon as she went backstage, she went back to her iPhone. They have to pay celebrities to use their crappy phone!
Regards,
Steph in Henderson, NV
Samsung was a major sponsor of The Oscars last week - and it seems that Samsungs sponsor ship was turning it into more an informercial for Samsung with Ellen taking selflies with celebs using a samsung phone - out on stage and in the audience - but once she went back stage - seems Ellen took out the phone she really cared about - her iPhone and took more selflies and posted them on twitter and well it said taken with an iPhone. Which just slapped Sammy in the face - awe - kind of makes you feel sad for them - or not.

Hi Rob
I posted this in the Google+ community but I was wondering if any one else has this problem. I have the iPhone 5s that is NOT jailbroken, occasionally when I'm multitasking on my phone switching between apps it will basically crash and restart. It happens probably about once a day,

Hi Chris - I had some restarting issues as well before I went to iOS 7.1 - beta - and since I have been on the beta the issue for me is gone. So hopefully apple will pull the trigger soon maybe this week for iOS 7.1 for Gold Master release.
Hi Rob,
Have you've found that someone ask you or yourself, get what did I pay for that app if anything?
You go to look at see either a cloud icon or free even if you paid for it. It would be nice if apple showed the price but also that you already own it! Is there a way to know other than having to look way back on your purchase downloads which takes way to long? Sometimes u can "see" the price for a split second when u search for it in the App Store

Michael
VOICEMAIL - Derrek_Apple_TV_Rearrange_icons
Hi Derrek - Yes I am aware of that - what I was saying was a new Apple TV would give you a list of TV channels i.e. - replace your cable set top box - but rather than it be a linear set of channels stuck in some highly questionable order - you would be able to re-arrange the channels in any order you want - thus grouping all the sports channels together, and pushing others to the bottom of the list. But yes on Apple TV now - for the Tiles they have you can change the order around - move to towards the top the ones you care the most about.

Hi Rob,
With regards to kickstarter projects I thought this was a pretty cool desk and it looks like this one is funded!
Regards
Jason H
Hi Jason thanks for the heads up on the SlatePro - Personal TechDesk this is quote Designed for your office, home, or apartment and made for professionals, students, designers, gamers, or just anyone with a desk unquote. Essentially it is a desk with cut out and notches and slots designed for your digital lifestyle especially your iOS and Apple Lifestyle. But really it will work for anyone with multiple electronic devices - which I am guessing is everyone listening to this show.
One thing I noticed about it was that it was designed and shown for anyone with a desk if they were right handed - so I emailed the person running this and asked - hey what about us lefties and his response - which came back within minutes was.
Hi Rob,
Between you and me, I'll be posting an update with a stretch goal on Monday. There has been far too many requests for a left handed model. Thanks for writing in. The update should be posted Monday. Thanks!
Nathan
Ok - well now between him and me and all of you too.
Always nice to see thus running a Kickstarter project reply quickly to emails.
Per this project - he had a goal of $12k to start and is at about 50k now. So well past his goal. This one will go until March 27th at 8:00 AM CT. Pricing starts now at $448
Search for SlatePro - one word at kickstarter dot com or in the show notes for ep 299 at today in iOS dot com.

http://www.dreamjb.com/2014/02/apple-id-2-step-verification-system.html
One of the security features introduced by Apple is 2 step verification - and that system is just available in a few markets - but now it is coming to a few more - Japan, Canada and some European countries. Actually it has now been made available specifically to Japan, Canada, Italy, Germany, France, and Spain.
The 2 step verification is where you first enter your Apple ID and password as usual. Then Apple sends a verification code to one of your devices - and you enter that code to verify your identity and complete the sign in.
This is optional by the way

update-to-enhance-functionality-of-iphone-5s-touch-id
Hi Rob,
FYI. I raised this issue on your show about touch ID forgetting finger prints. I think people who didn’t experience the issue tended to minimize it. Glad to see Apple has finally admitted the issue and is doing something about it! It’s not been an issue for me since getting my 3rd iPhone 5s!
Regards,
Dr. Dave
Hi Dr. Dave - first - this article is just rumor at this point. Siting a source familiar with Apple - so don't get too excited or happy about Apple doing something - until well Apple actually does something. In the mean time folks if you have issues with fingerprints not working with touch ID - first make sure reduce motion is turned on - that turns off parallax - that helped a lot of people - and then next it going in and retraining over and over touch ID for your finger prints - for all parts of your finger.
Per Apple helping out - like suggested by a source familiar - well we will need to wait and see on that - Sources familiar is really a bloggers euphemism for I made up this next story based my own speculation - but will try to give it some street cred by saying it came from some unknown source. Please see The Verge and BGR for how this is done ad-nausium.

I want to take a minute now to talk about today's sponsor. And that is Hover - if you go to hover.com and use the promo code TIItv one word as a new user you can get 10% off your domain name registrations - that is TIItv
One of the great features of Hover is the ability to quickly and easily create multiple redirects from a single URL for no additional cost. There is no additional cost to hide the personal info on your domain. There is no annoying trick you into multiple upsell items you did not want when you use Hover - it is just a good customer friendly interface that is a joy to work with. So whether you are looking to redirect to your Facebook page or gplus page or twitter or tumblr pages - Hover is there for you to make it easy to tell people where to go to find you on the web. Like say how I did it with the Google Plus community - by you going to today in iOS dot com slash community
Hover just makes it so easy to create those redirects.
Remember control your namespace - it is the best thing you can do on the web. So as an example you could register your name.com and then set up your name.com /facebook to go to your Facebook page and your name.com / gplus to go your google plus page and so on. I am a customer and a very happy one of Hover and highly recommend them for your domain name needs.
IF you are a podcaster - you could register a domain and then forward your domain dot com slash feed to your current RSS feed - and then you own your feed.
Remember the promo code TIItv for new users of hover to save 10% on your purchases - that is promo code TIItv
Isn't it time for you to like registering domain names again. Thanks Hover for supporting this show.

Hi Rob,
Per Show 298 and The blind gentleman who had problems with Siri using the wrong contact.
How about suggesting he change his contact address to:
Last name, First Name.
That way there should be no confusion. Now if you have several Johnson's I would suggest
Last name, First initial
Regards,
Doug McV
Hi Rob,
I have not tested it yet, but what if you just create a unique nickname for the contacts and refer to them that way when using Siri?
Regards,
Fabio E
Hi, rob, on the last episode of tii, a listener asked how he could use Siri in the car with buuetooth without siri going over Bluetooth. I have a wavejamr Bluetooth music receiver that i use at home in my iPod docks but it also is advertised as being able to be used in the car. I find it annoying that it gives the behavior the listener is describing, but it does indeed provide that functionality. When you press and hold the home button, siri comes up and you can talk to it and her(or his) response will come through your phone speaker. Heres a link to this little device.

Hi rob, I saw there was an update to the gmail app that included backround app refresh. I hate waiting and I love this new feature. It was included in an update to the gmail all right after iOS 7 came out but mysteriously removed a few weeks later.
This feature is awesome. There are also some minor ui tweaks throughout the new version of the app.
Regards,

Hi Rob.
You've been a great help to me in my first 2 requests for advice so I'm hoping the trend continues.
Do you or your audience know of a way to clear the badge for the Messages app once I've looked at the message on the lockscreen, without having to go into the Messages app? I am jailbroken so I am willing to run a jailbreak tweak.

Chris

Hi Rob,
My car (2012 Honda Accord) has a USB connection that I can use to listen to audio through the car's sound system, but phone calls bypass it.
Do you or your listeners know of an app or hardware device that would allow a caller's voice to be directed through the car's speakers?

Preston B

There is a new update to the evasi0n jailbreak - version 1.0.7 - and according to the evaders team the way to find out if you need to update is to search for sslpatch one word in cydia - if it is in there - you do not need to update - if it is not in there - then cydia is not updating for you and you need to update.
This issue is such that you do need to rejailbreak fully - as they can't update automatically those effected - because the issue is the inability to update packages.

poor-5c-sales-analyst/
Hi Rob,
The picture is of a tweet from 9to5Mac "Opinion: Will Apple abandon the 'low cost' iPhone due to it's apparent failure"
And earlier I saw a cult of mac article titled something along the lines of iPhone 5c disappointing sales due to cases
Am I crazy, wasn't the iPhone 5c (this tremendous disappointment) not the 2nd best selling phone on 3 of the 4 major carriers in the US and the 3rd in the other beating Sammy's shiny new device? Maybe you have a how wrong we're they? segment almost current. and Gene Munster, wow, but hey I'm not an "expert"
Expert cynic more like it, but maybe I'm the one that's not getting it, guess we'll see with the next quarter announcement.
Regards,
Jason H
Hi Jason - yeah - it always cracks me up when people talk about the great failure the iPhone 5C is - yet it is the number 2 or 3 best selling handset at all major carriers in the US. Look the iPhone 5C was never meant to sell as well as the 5S - and given the technical differences vs price differences over all - I have no idea why it is selling at all. But it is and it is selling well very well vs other handsets not called the iPhone 5S. And it is not like 1. Apple ever said what actual sales are - or 2. Apple said what they expected sales to be. So yeah - how can anyone know if it is a disappointment to Apple or a amazing success - from Apples point of view.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fcc-speed-test/id794322383?mt=8
The FCC launched their own speed test app for iOS - seems the NSA just did not have enough info on you - and now they want you to install the FCC app so they can cross their t's and dot their I's when it comes to their dossier on you. Or maybe this is just an innocent app made by the FCC so you can check your local speed so they can see where in the US our network needs improving. And according to the FCC quote
Privacy is paramount. The FCC has taken significant measures to ensure the privacy and confidentiality of volunteers for this program. Using privacy measures developed and reviewed by a diverse team of privacy experts, any data that could potentially identify specific smartphones is analyzed and processed to ensure privacy protection. unquote
Yup any data that could potential identify users is analyzed by the NSA and processed to ensure protection. Link to the app in the show notes - just incase you know you are not overly paranoid and do want to help out the FCC to see how network speeds are in the US.

Hi Rob:
On episode 298 about the caller asking to unlock sprint iPhone, i do use sprint and sprint unlocks iphones for free after having the phone for at least 90 days, i renew my contract with the iphone 5 and since u travel overseas a lot i called sprint and they told me that i had to have the phone for at least 90 days, after the 90 days i called sprint back and they factory unlocked my iphone thru itunes.
About the caller having issues with imessage while traveling, i experience the same issue, after researching i found that you have to enable roaming to be able to use imessage, i opted to just use whatsapp or telegram while i travel and it can be used on wifi

Hello Rob,
I have heard on your show that you enjoy your pebble watch. I am looking into getting one, but I was wondering if you think the next iPhone coming out this fall will have the iWatch come out as well?
I really value your opinion and was wondering if that iWatch was coming out because if it's not I am going to go ahead and pursue and purchase a Pebble watch.

Hi Rob, I'm a first time writer long time listener. I just purchased the TII app, and used the easy email link. Here are some of my suggestions about photo apps. I use camera+ for shooting and light editing. It syncs all the photos in the lightbox over icloud from iphone to ipad so you can edit on either before saving to your camera roll. For detailed editing, Facetune is a great little app that let's you whiten teeth, smooth blemishes, patch spots, selectively blur areas, highlight details, even re-shape objects. It's great for fine-tuning a photo that's not quite right. Perspective Correct is another app that is great for adjusting the view angle of photos that are slightly off. For collages, the best by far has been Diptic PDQ (which stands for Pretty Dang Quick). It lives up to its name and makes putting multiple photos together very easy and fast.
One highly regarded photo shooting and editing app is VSCO cam. It is nice looking and to use, but once edited the photos seem to have a slightly "washed out" sameness to them. For some moody shots it's great though. One question for the listeners is if they know of any other photo apps that sync a photo editing lightbox through icloud between iDevices.
Regards,
Jordan from Massachusetts

Thanks again to our new Advertiser on the show this month and that is lynda dot com - and if you go to lynda dot com slash tii - that is l y n d a dot com slash t i i - you will get a free 7 day trial. Thanks Lynda for sponsoring this show and for the free offer.
Thanks again to our sponsor Hover dot com - remember for new users use promo code TiiTV one word to get 10% off your purchase. Hover is who I manage all my domains with and I really do love their service and recommend them even when they are not advertising on the show. Again use promo code TiiTV to save 10% when you first purchase domain names with Hover.
If you want to know when new episodes go up - look at the Tii app - not just the best way to consume the show - but also a great way to get a push message when a new episode goes live or there is other iOS breaking news. Just $2.99 in the app store - it helps you get the most out of the show and it helps support the show at the same time - plus it makes it really easy to email or call the show with your feedback. Again just search for Tii in the iTunes app store.
And Before we go today I want to remind you to send in your feedback to the show - 206-666-6364 - that 206-moon-dog - or record your feedback and email it to the show at today in iOS at gmail dot com - The feedback can be a question or comment per something someone said on this episode or it can be a question or rant you have about something else. An App or product review - good or bad - as long as it is iOS related - it is welcomed. I am always looking for new Artwork to feature that you created on an iOS device - just put some Tii branding on it and send it in. And of course we are always looking for more music created on an iOS device to play on the show. This is your show and your feedback is greatly desired. And don't forget to check out our new Moderated Google Plus community by going to todayinios dot com slash community.
Stick around for the end of the episode today after the music - I have some additional voice mail message with regards to Siri and the Reminders app that did not fit earlier into the show and thought they would go well together at the end of the show.
And that folks is kinda going to do it for us today.
