The New iPad - On Line

    ==========

8:05 AM CT - Leawood Apple Store - There were about 90 people in line when Apple let people in - about 10 minutes early.  I was out of the store a minute before 8:00 AM. Based on the number of units in the store about 800 units based on what was behind the genius bar (I took picks and counted) - it is doubtful they will sell out since there were less than 100 people that at opening.  Will be interesting to see if they do sell out this weekend at all.

Look out for iOS 5.1 if your are using Flashlaunch and home screen shortcuts
Look out for iOS 5.1 if your are using Flashlaunch and home screen shortcuts

As I always say (and say and say and say) - hold off on updating to a new versions of iOS when it first comes out.  While I have had some emails / voice mail messages saying all went great.  I have had others regretting the upgrade because they were using Flashlaunch and other home screen shortcuts.  Here are their emails.

    Rob,

Thought I'd let listeners know, the FlashLaunch App is no longer working for me on my iPad since upgrading to iOS 5.1. Anyone using the app may want to think twice before updating. Not a big deal to me on my iPad, but it's another reason why I won't be updating my iPhone now for awhile...nice to have a bit quicker access to Bluetooth, airplane mode and iCloud settings.

    Tim, Wisconsin

    Hi Rob

i've been making extensive use of the springboard shortcuts from jeff broderick at brkrck.me/settings

in iOS 5.1 apple has disabled it's URL scheme allowing those shortcuts to function

had i known, i probably would have held off on updating, but, oh well

    cheers,
    paul
    mill valley

    Hi Rob,

I updated to iOS 5.1 last night and today I'm noticing that the
Settings shortcut I installed (as a Profile) from

    http://brdrck.me/settings/

are no longer functional. I think iOS 5.1 undid some of Jeff
    Broderick's hard work.

Email from ATT likely indicates end of Grandfathered Unlimited plans for LTE iPhone

As you likely know AT&T has already gutted the "unlimited" data plans they offered up to those of us early adopters - with their recent announcement that "unlimited" really means 3GB and then throttled to unusable speeds after that.  But hey at least we still were in an "unlimitted" plan and there was always hope that when AT&T figured out their network congestion issues - maybe with the help of their LTE roll out - they would reverse their decision with regards to throttling.  Well we could hope? Right?

Sadly I just received an email from a listener (who has been emailing in for almost 2 years - so I believe what he sent is legit). The email is at the bottom of the post.  First with his Question to AT&T with regards to a data plan for an iPad and then the AT&T response.  Names Redacted to protect those involved.

The key line is highlighted in Yellow and what it likely means is that when the next iPhone comes out in the Fall - an iPhone that 99.99999% likely will offer LTE (4G) connection - AT&T will respond in similar kind and that will be - that your grandfathered unlimited data plan on your current iPhone - Well yeah - that dies with the 3G iPhones.  And starting with the LTE iPhones - there will be new data plans and no grandfathering of unlimited to 4G iPhones.

So anyone holding out hope against hope that AT&T would one day lift their 3GB throttle cap on their unlimited accounts - yeah - kiss those dreams goodbye.

Q2:Please enter your phone question below:
A2:I have an unlimited data plan with AT&T for my current iPad. Will I be able to transfer this plan to the new iPad.

    Dear XXXXXX,

Thank you for contacting AT&T about your wireless service. My name is AAAAAAA, and I will be more than happy to assist you with your inquiry regarding transfering data plans from one iPad to another today.

I understand your concern and frustration; after reviewing your account I would like to inform you that it is not possible to be grandfathered over unless you?re current and new iPad are both 3G compatible iPads. If your new iPad is a 4G compatible device then you will need to pick from one of the current data plans that we offer.

XXXXXX, if you have any additional questions about transfering data plans from one iPad to another, please respond to this email. If you have a question about another issue, please send us a new email via the Contact Us link in the lower left-hand corner of your myAT&T account. UPDATE:  3/9/12  1:30 PM CT

Below is an update from the person that sent me the original email.  Looks like AT&T has changed their decision with him and is now going to grandfather over the unlimited iPad plan he had.  I also heard from another call that talked to AT&T and they confirmed they will grandfather his unlimited plan - but he would need a new sim card.  So maybe there is still some hope of keeping your unlimited plan on AT&T for your iPhone when the LTE iPhone comes out.

    Hi Rob,

Wow, you post my e-mails on your site and the next thing I know is I get another e-mail from AT&T stating I will get to keep my unlimited plan with an iPad 4G.  Score one for the little guy! (at least for now).

I discussed the details of your present Session Based (Prepaid) Data Unlimited plan with an AT&T Consumer Data Support specialist. This is the group that provides most Customer Service support functions for an account such as yours.

This plan is compatible with the new 4G Apple iPad recently introduced. Very simply, this plan supports the iPad, whatever version. In fact, I see that you have changed in equipment in the past from the original iPad to the current iPad 2.

Mr. XXXXXX, if you have any additional questions about the compatibility of the present iPad Data Unlimited plan with the new iPad, please respond to this email. What I think is most interesting is the hits of Apple TV and OS 6 in the results.  This bodes well for a new Apple TV being announced this Wednesday at the March 7th Apple Event. And even more important - AppleCoreMedia is typically what you get for a result from Apps.  So maybe that means finally the announcement of Apps on Apple TV.

Ask Tii - Issues Upgrading and Jailbreaking iOS 5.0.1

    Hello Rob,

Reading your instructions on Jailbreaking and Step 0 was funny, however, it appies to me. I currently am running iPhone 4 (AT&T) iOS 4.1(8B117) Firmware 02.10.04 Jailbroken with Limerain and my wifes iP4 I believe is 4.3 JB with Greenpoison. Was never really necessary to unlock.

My question is how do I go about upgrading those? I tried to restore yesterday and got stuck in restore mode. I downloaded Redsnow and the 5.0.1 IPSW. Whether I tried to restore with the downloaded IPSW or just plain restore, got several errors.  If I cannot restore, how do I unjailbreak to upgrade?

I have been following and learning the JB stuff for quite a while, (aside from our phones and iPad, I have helped many of my friends once they saw what our phones can do) but I apologize for what may be a stupid issue.  I just have not found an answer for my situation online and this is the first time I have wanted to update.

Thank you for any help you can provide.  If you need more info, would be glad to provide.

    John

    Hi John,

First off - what I am going to tell you to do - to update to iOS 5.0.1 - will not just remove your current jailbreak (until you add in a new one) - but it will remove the ability for you to unlock your iPhones.  If you do not care about unlocking your iPhones - then please proceed.

First connect your iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes.

Next when you see your iPhone under Devices on the left hand side - right click on the iPhone and select "Backup"

Once it is done backing up.  On the right hand side select "Summary" Then select "Check for update"

Then follow the instructions for updating to iOS 5.0.1.

Once you are updated you can then go back to my tutorial to re-jailbreak.

    Good luck.

    Regards,

Tell Tii - Fixing issues with Home button that stopped working
    Hi Rob.

Apparently many iphone users have issues with the home button becoming non-responsive or unreliable.  I took it to the Apple Store and was told to replace my phone (for 149).  After doing full restore to factory condition with no improvement, I stumbled upon an article comment which seems to work:

First make sure that the problem is physical.. when you click the home button several times it does not respond to you .. everything else on the phone works perfect .. The problem is intermittent, that means most of the time the button works and one day it stops responding. Insert the charging cable, (make sure it is not blocked to the wall) Push the cable from the bottom to the top, as if you were trying to slightly rotate the plug around an imaginary axis where it is plugged to the phone. Very slightly, you don’t want to break anything. It is better to put one finger on the bottom across the plug and your thumb right under the home button (not on the home button) instead of trying to bend the cable toward the screen with both fingers holding the plug. When you hear a click while doing that, that is when your home button if fixed. You repeat that several time if does not work from the first time. Trying to bend the plug downwards does not do the trick. Be patient, don’t use too much force and good luck.
