    Transcript for Episode 259

    -----------------------------------

iOS 6.1.2 was released this past week - this update if for all iOS devices running iOS 6.x - and it fixes the Exchange server bug we mentioned on the last show.  So for those of your where you IT department warned you not to update to iOS 6.1 - but you had already done so - well now you can upgrade to 6.1.2 - and be kosher on your corporate network once more.  For those who were waiting for a exchange server bug fix but also want to jailbreak - good news - the Evasi0n jailbreak has been updates to version 1.4 - and it supports all versions of iOS 6.x - so everything from 6.0 to 6.1.2 is supported. And I did finally get my tutorial up - with all these changes I kept having to update it just as I was getting ready to release it - but it is out now - at today in iOS dot com - and if you are a first time jail breaker - this is tutorial for you.  It takes you step by step click by click on what you need to do to jailbreak - and then goes over how to use cydia and install an app for the first time.

Please note if you already are jailbroken with any other version of iOS 6.x and want to upgrade to iOS 6.1.2 - you will need to restore your iPhone to remove the jailbreak - and then upgrade to iOS 6.1.2 - and then re-jailbreak.  And if you plan to jailbreak you should upgrade to iOS 6.1.2 from your computer and NOT repeat NOT from an Over the Air update.  in other words no updatie on your iPhone - only updatie from your computer - comprende?

One thing that iOS 6.1.2 does not address is the security bug mentioned on the last show - that is the one where if you tap on this hold that - count to 3 tap on that swipe this and the tap quickly on a couple of other things you could get access to some info on an iPhone with out needing to know the passcode.  Well that is being addressed with iOS 6.1.3 - and how do we know - was it from Mac Rumor sites. Nope it is from the beta for iOS 6.1.3 that apple just made available to devs. Expect this one to go live in the next two weeks.

Strategy Analytics released Smartphone shipment numbers for Q4 2012 last week.  Part of that was Global Smartphone Shipments by Model.  Of Note is that the iPhone 5 outsold the Galaxy S3 in Q4 of 2012 - That really is not surprising it was the first full quarter of the iPhone 5 being available after all.  Not a real fair comparison  being it one device out for 3 months vs the iPhone 5 only out for one month before the quarter started.

What I found interesting is that the Galaxy S3 was only the 3rd best shipping Handset in Q4 2012.  And what was really surprising is the other phone model that outsold the Galaxy S3 to come in 2nd place - was it the galaxy Note - Nope - was it something from HTC - Nyet - was it a windows phone 8 phone - Nine - ok - now I am just being silly. No the Phone model that was second to the iPhone 5 in sales in Q4 of 2012 and ahead of the Galaxy S3 - is a phone that was released in Q4 of 2011 - thats right the iPhone 4S in Q4 of 2012 outsold the Galaxy S3.

    HI Rob,

Per the caller asking about marking a spot where you left your car.  I use G-Park to pin and mark the location of a parked car.  Works like a dream and is very simple to operate.

    regards

    Dave

    Hi Rob,

I found find my car app very handy and effective.

    Rob,

Here's a simple answer to the problem of locating a parked car:

    • Before you leave your car, open the native maps app.

    • Tap the arrow in the bottom left corner.

    • A pulsing blue dot will appear at your current location.

    • Tap the low right corner that looks like a page being peeled back.

    • Select the "Drop Pin" option.

Your current location is now saved with a purple pin until you elect to remove it.

    Regards,

    -Glenn

    Hi Rob,

For Holly - have her check out the app - The Training Notebook - three words in the app store.  It is a bit pricey at $14.99 - regards,

    Hi Rob

On a recent episode A Voice over user asked about resources to help with editing text on iOS, If they listen to episode 12 of my podcast -

"The iBlindTech Democast" at www.iblindtech.com it is specifically designed to help blind and vision impaired users "Get started and go further on iDevices"  In Ep 12 we talk about this issue.

Rob, thanks for the podcast, I really do enjoy it and you along with a number of other apple centric podcasters helped me to get into podcasting myself. I have found it incredibly rewarding. At first I didn't know if I was helping anyone much but have received lots of really lovely emails of thanks and some great suggestions for episodes from listeners.

    Garth from iblindtech dot com

Garth - always great to hear about more people getting into podcasting and love it when I was able to help in some way.

I had a bunch of responses to the question about recording phone calls on your iPhone but they were all about using a 3rd party service to make the calls and then have them record the calls.  What is really needed is a solution that allows you to use the native Phone app with your regular carrier that allows you to record your voice going in and the voice of the person you are talking with and to do this easily once a call is started regardless of who called who.  And so far I am not aware said app exists even on the jailbreak side.

    Hey Rob,

Here are some responses to listener comments:

    1. Regarding the Mailbox app for Gmail mail account; I am am number 25,350 in line. I will let you know what I think once I get it.

    2. Want to mention a strange Jailbreak crash that occurs and I have another user that confirms that it happened to that person as well. On one occasion, my iPhone 5 rebooted with the Apple Logo showing first.  It did not return to the Safe Mode state that is normal when a Jailbroken device encounters a "conflict". When this happened, the device appeared as if it was unJailbroken (no safe mode in status bar). It was a bit alarming, but a turning the device off and then back on fixed the issue. I have never seen this before with any other Jailbreak version previously (and I have tried them all).

    3. Finally, I did an instructional guide for Gridlee and also bought the iCade arcade stand for iPad which is tons of fun and has been a hit at every function or gathering I have had or attended with friends. I am 46 and my friends and I are the initial players of the these old arcade games and really get a kick out of this combo.

    iAmThereforeiPad.com

And folks you can see the link for the Gridlee guide by searching for Tutorial: Gridlee for iOS in the show notes for ep 259

Per the Mailbox app - one Listener Carlos has already received it and is having issues with images in emails causing the full email not to load - which the folks at Mailbox are aware of said issue and are working on it - so if you get your number called and see this issue - yes they are aware of it.

As you may have gathered I don't like Samsung - I think they clearly and purposefully ripped off the iPhone - that said I was not in favor of Apple suing Samsung - I felt it put Apple in a bad light and propped up Samsung because it made it seem like Samsung phones were clones of the iPhone - and if you can't afford an iPhone why not get a Samsung phone. Which guess what happened.

But now I have a reason to actually really really dislike Samsung. It has to do with a lawsuit they luckily lost in Germany and it is with regards to a patent Samsung has dealing with Voiceover features. Yes - Samsung sued apple over Voiceover features. What the Frack were they thinking. Or as John Pacxkowsi at all things d said - this is the PR equivalent of punching yourself in the face. Florian Mueller of Foss Patents agreed that Samsungs efforts here had crossed a line saying quote From a certain angle the voiceover patent suit is the worst [such patent lawsuit] because it's an attempt -- thwarted for the time being, but not dismissed forever -- to hold vision-impaired German Apple customers hostage. unquote. He tried to be diplomatic and say he did not thing Samsung was evil - but you will get none of that diplomacy from me - Samsung is clearly very very evil. I have a large number of blind and sight impaired listeners of this podcast - and they almost all to a tee say they love the iPhone because of what Apple has done to help those with sight issues. And no Samsung is trying at least in Germany to take away some of those features - If this was not a G-rated show - this would be a point where I would say things that would make Joe Rogan blush. Instead I will just say shame on you samsung - shame on you.

Apple has finally caught up with demand on the iPad mini with the iPad mini's now showing up on apples site as in stock. So almost 4 months from release to supply equalling demand. As always expect to see some articles about demand drop being the reasons - others saying increases in production output being the reason and the truth probably being a combination of the two.

Mac Rumors is reporting on a report out of Brazil where Apple is now being sued because they - wait for it - Updated the iPad too soon. From the lawsuit led by the institute of Politics and Law quote The institute claims that the iPad 4 is not [an] effective technological evolution [compared to] the iPad 3 or 'New iPad', characterizing [a] sort of "planned obsolescence". In practice, the accusation is that the Apple iPad 3 could have reached the shelves with the characteristics presented in the fourth generation - a processor, a connector and a camera a bit more advanced. unquote.

Huh?  Hey at least now we know in the US we do not hold a monopoly on really really stupid lawsuits.  I know I don't like to talk about lawsuits - but this one is just soooo dumb - I had to mention it.

Ok - lets get back into some real news or not - over on the Apple rumor front - this time we have photos of what was supposed to be the innards of the iPhone 2013 - showing an A7 processor - which is rumored to be a quad core processor with 2GB or RAM.  However after these photos made the blog rounds - they were shown to be fakes and left the site - iOSdoc with some egg on their face.

Google Glass is something I think really only the uber uber geeks with way to much money will be interested in the types that have $1,400 to throw away. Which is how much it is supposed to cost - vs say the $115 most Pebble pledgers paid.  But hey if you have $1,400 burning a hole in your pocket and you are in any way thinking of actually getting the google glass - then you will be happy to know that Google has officially said Google Glass will work with an iPhone.  I will not get into dogging Google Glass just quite yet - I think I will have lots of time to do that in the future.  But for now I just wanted to let you know Great News Google Glass and the iPhone will work together.

My Brother used to be a cop in NY City - up until mid 2012 when he hit his 20 years and retired.  One thing he talked about was Apple Picking and the big issue it was becoming.  Apple Picking is the name given to those robbing People of their Apple wares - specifically their iPhones - but really any Apple products they held out in open and made for easy grabbing.  The issue is so bad that when The Big Apple looked at crime stats they found crime had risen in NY city because of Apple picking - take Apple Picking incidents out and crime had dropped.  Well now it seems the Big Apple and Apple have teamed up to help curb the issue of the escalating thefts of iOS devices in NY City.  And now the NYPD is sharing unique identifying numbers of stollen iPhones with Apple so as to have Apple help track down the stollen devices.  NYPD said quote "We're looking for ways to find individuals who have stolen Apple products and return the products to their original owners, It is being done to learn the pattern who is stealing." unquote

And now it appears these efforts are starting to result in arrests - hopefully word will get out that is it not safe for robbers to grab apple gear and will switch over to picking Samsung products - or not.

Thanks to Stephen for this next one - which is about The Crowd-sourced trouble shooting website FixYa and their culling of data.  They issued a Smartphone Reliability report based on nearly a million combined issue posts and then they assigned each smartphone manufacturer a reliability score which was weighted based on Market Share.  The higher the score the better.  And guess who had the highest score - well of course it was Apple - why else would I be bringing it up. That they had the highest score is not surprising - it is that they totally blew away the competition - getting a score about 3 times higher than 2nd place Samsung. Or as FixYa said in their Press Release the iPhone is roughly 3 times more reliable than the Samsung, five times more reliable than Nokia and a whopping 25 times more reliable than Motorola.  Sometimes you do actually get what you paid for - as long as it is an Apple Product that is.  For Motorola - yeah not so much.

Not sure if you heard about the recent issue in the US with a Carnival cruise that had a fire and they lost power and it was a cruise from Heck basically - it even was the focus of a skit on Saturday night live.  Well one of the Tii listeners Mike W was on that cruise and he sent me a picture from the cruise - no not of people using plastic bags for their toilet needs - thankfully not - but rather of a rats nest of mobile devices plugged into tone of the only available outlets on the boat - where everyone was trying to charge up their devices.  There are at least 35 devices plugged in and over half are iOS devices.  Mike - thanks for the photo and sorry to hear your vacation was anything but.

I received feedback from a few listeners that upgraded to iOS 6.1.2 and iTunes 11.0.2 - that wifi sync is now working for them - where in the past it did not work at all or at least not consistently.  So if you are one of those with issues with wifi sync in the past - you should look into upgrading to iOS 6.1.2 and iTunes 11.0.2.  Good luck.

    PLAY VOICEMAIL - MITCH_PEBBLE_WATCH_REVIEW

    Hi, Rob -->

I received my Pebble last Friday and here's my review after one week. I agree with the reviewer from the last podcast who was hoping for more...the watch faces and apps shown on the website, getpebble.com, don't exist yet, a fact that doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere in the Kickstarter info or the website. Hopefully that will be remedied soon because the existing watch faces are pretty lame.

The watch works as advertized, though. It looks good and notifies me of incoming calls and texts. I chose to not have email notifications because I don't want the watch to vibrate at 3 in the morning. There are posts in the getpebble.com forums that complain about the battery life of the iPhone, but I've noticed no significant difference. There does seem to be a serious problem with the watch battery, though. I'm on my second charging...charge every three days vs. a claimed seven day battery life. I get less than fifteen calls or texts a day. To make matters worse, there's no indication on the watch that the battery is dying. The first time I had to charge it (after the initial charge), the watch just showed up dead one morning. I found that you have to go to the launcher on the watch and manually check for battery life. I've been doing that a few times a day for the past 24 hours and managed to avoid a dead watch this time.

    Thanks for the show,

    Bob

Just a quick update on the Almond+ Wifi Router mentioned on Ep 257. They are up to over 615,000 dollars pledged well past their goal of 250,000 dollars.  You have until Saturday March 9th at 5:19 AM ET to pledge for this one - go back and listen to episode 257 for more info on this or just search for Almond+ at kickstarter.com or in the kickstarter iOS App.

Another Kickstarter project we mentioned on Ep 257 was the Mauz - M A U Z - the Mauz is a minority report interface powered by your smartphone. And well per pledging this one is not doing so well.  It has a goal of $150,000 dollars and has just $26,599 pledged which is not good since when ep 257 came out two weeks ago they had a pledge total of $22,000 - so they raised less than $5,000 in the last two weeks.  This one will end on Mar 8th at 1:19 PM ET - but for all intensive purposes - this one is already over - not much chance of them getting funded - which is surprising for a product that was one of those picked as best in show at MacWorld 2013.

    Hi Rob,

The JB tweak for tricking TV and Video sites to give popup of not for JB devices is called 'xCon'

    Regards,

    Chris in London.

Thanks to Chris and to everyone else that sent in reminders on that app - yes it is one mentioned before on the show - a couple of times - seems I forgot the name last time as well.

    Rob,

If I'm on 6.1 and I'm jailbroken, do I need to restore before updating to 6.1.2? I saw that the jailbreak for 6.1.2 is compatible. I can't tell if it's okay to upgrade (connected to a computer & iTunes) while still jailbroken.

    Regards

    Tracy,

    Nashville

Hi Tracy - actually got this question from quite a few - As mentioned earlier in the episode you need to restore first to remove the jailbreak with you iOS device connected via iTunes - and then do the upgrade via iTunes to 6.1.2 - then do the new jailbreak - obviously you want to do backups before the restore and again make sure all photos and movies in your camera roll have been imported to your computer prior to restoring and upgrading.

    Rob,

If any listeners having issues with Siri. Like, "sorry can you say that again" over and over. Seems its a Tweak called 'Location Spoofer'

    Removed and working fine.

    PLAY VOICEMAIL - DAVID_CHI_JB_APPS

    Hi rob,

Ever since the latest jailbreak I have had a problem with the stock phone app in that every time I click on it to open it the app will crash instantly if I am on my recent calls tab -  any other tab in the phone app will work just not my recent call tab.  Have any of your other listeners experienced this problem and have they found a solution for it. For me I have found a temp fix which is to shut my phone down and hold the volume up button as it boots and it will all work then but then none of my other jailbrek apps or tweaks work - however the phone app is pretty much the most vital app on the phone so if anyone out there has a solution or knows what other app or tweak might be causing this issue I would appreciate it.

    Regards,

    Ryan

Ryan - the issue is with one of your installed apps / tweaks - which one or ones - I could not say - but by holding down on the volume up button - when booting up the iPhone you proved it is an issue with one of the installed apps - when in that mode - go to cydia and start removing apps one at a time and then reboot and test and see if the problem went away - yes a long process if you have a lot of apps installed from Cydia.  Which is why I have said - make sure if you have jailbreak apps you installed you are no longer using - to uninstall them - don't wait for an issue - be proactive.

One question that comes up is changing your root password on your iOS device once you jailbreak - For a while there the MobileTerminal App was not working - and you had to add a repository to get another version - but now that issues is fixed and there is another version of MobileTerminal available from the main BigBoss repository - it is called MobileTerminal - one word.  It is free and by installing it and changing your root password you make your jailbroken iOS device more secure than a non-jailbroken device.  That is because the root password on all iOS devices is set to the word alpine by default.  To change the password install the Mobileterminal app and launch it.

First enter the command su space root and tap return.

second type alpine and tap return

    third - type p a s s w d and tap return

fourth type in your new password and tap return - then type it is again to verify it and tap return.

fifth type in exit and tap return.  That changes your default SSH password - but there is still the mobile password - same password used but for different items.  To change this one - type p a s s w d and tap return.

next type alpine and tap return.

next type in your new password  - I recommend the same new one you just entered when changing the SSH password.

Verify it and tap return.  Then type exit and tap return.

That is it.  Your jailbroken iOS device is now more secure than when it was not jailbroken.  Well assuming you don't do something dumb and change the password iPhone or iPad or something like that.

Cult of mac had a list of their favorite Jailbreak tweaks for the iPad.  Some of which we have mentioned in the past like SwipeSelection - one word and free. And NCSettings also free.  Most of the others they mentioned are paid for - look for the link titled  Jailbreak Tweaks For The iPad - Cult of Mac in the show notes for ep 259 over at today in iOS dot com.

    Hi Rob:

Just received my Verizon newsletter, which I typically skim and delete.  This time I see they are pushing the "StarStar Me" vanity number service, where you pay 3 bucks a month to have your own custom "StarStar" phrase so that, as Verizon puts it, you can give out this more memorable number instead of "ten hard-to-remember digits." The service also has an app that allows you to send a custom auto-SMS text when you are not able to answer your phone.

My question is, does anyone out there know of another app out there that would allow me to send out a CUSTOM text message when I don't or answer? I like this idea, but I really don't need a vanity number or the $3 monthly fee.

    Thanks for all you do!

    Mari

    (Cleveland, OH)

    Rob,

Do you know if there is a way to lock a setting such as VPN so that the user cannot remove it without a PIN or password? I want to be able to have the phone always connect over VPN and prevent the user from being able to change that. Thanks much for all you do with your App and podcast!

    Regards,

    Sergio

If anyone has recently jailbroken their Apple TV 3rd gen - please send me links to the method and tools you used.  We have listener Lawrence looking to jailbreak his Apple TV 3rd gen - and I don't have one to do the testing. Send that info to today in iOS at gmail dot com.

Please only send the link if you actually did the jailbreak on a 3rd gen device.

    Hi Rob,

I found an excellent app called iMediaShare.

it allows you to wirelessly view content stored on your iOS device on other systems such as a Playstation 3 console.

Just start the app and after a few seconds an iMediaShare icon appears on the PlayStation's Menu.

Using that icon, you can then navigate through your phone to photos, videos or music, and stream them to your PS3.

The icing on the cake though is that it also allows you to copy content too, so you can copy any photos, videos and even music albums strait over to your Playstation.

I found it an excellent way to backup my media and free up space on my iPhone.

The app apparently also works with Xbox360, PC's and even some TVs.

There is a free version of the app in the App Store called "iMediaShare lite"

    Thanks for the show!

    Jailbreak - iOS 6.0 to 6.1.2 - Untethered - Evasi0n 1.4 (1.5.3 update)

An un-tethered jailbreak is now available for all iOS Devices running versions of iOS 6.0 to 6.1.2.

NOTE - This jailbreak is not for those that need to or plan to unlock.  DO NOT USE THIS JAILBREAK IF YOUR IPHONE RELIES ON AN UN-OFFICIAL UNLOCK.

    =========

There are some very good articles on how to jailbreak but many miss a couple of steps that new jailbreakers need to know especially when it comes to using Cydia - the resource for finding and installing jailbroken apps and tweaks. This tutorial tries to help those first time jailbreakers by covering both the jailbreak process step by step and also how to use Cydia to install an app.

Do not try to jailbreak if you don't like when things go to (expletive). If you need your device for your business and being without it for any period of time will cause you to loose your job - stop now.  If you get mad at your significant other at how they fold towels or put the toilet paper on a roll - Jailbreaking is probably not for your personality.  Sometimes things break and your device will likely crash more often then if it was not jailbroken.  Apple "claims" jailbreak voids your warranty if that is an issue stop now.  Note Squaretrade's warranties still cover jailbreaking.

Step 0 - Before you start make sure you update your iOS device to iOS 6.1.2  if you have not done so already.  Make sure to use iTunes to do the update to iOS 6.1.2 - not the over the air update.  If you do not know how to update your iOS device jailbreaking may not be for you.

It is also important you have a spot on one of your home screens for a new app icon to be added.  If all of your home screens are full with app icons and folders - you will need to make room for a new app to be added during the jailbreak process.  Also remove the lock passcode from your iOS device and your SIM lock passcode.

If you are already updated to iOS 6.1.2 make sure you do a sync and backup of your iOS device.  If you have any photos or video you shot recently - transfer those now to your computer from your camera roll.  Also force quit every open App on your iOS device and then go to settings and general and then go to Reset and select "Reset Network Settings".  This will then reboot your iOS device.  Next connect your iOS device via the USB cord directly to your computer - not through a USB hub or keyboard or Monitor - right to the computer.

(To force quit the open apps - From the home screen on your iOS device - double tap the home button - a tray will appear on the bottom of the device with your apps that are open - tap and hold one of the apps.  All the apps in the tray will wiggle and you will see a red circle in the upper left with a "-" in it.  Tap on all of the red circles until all of your apps are closed.)

Step 1 - Close out (Force quit) iTunes on your computer. Make sure your iOS device is still turned on and connected via the USB cable - per Step 0.  Also close out all your other open apps on your computer except for your web browser.  It is best to have as little running on your computer as possible.

Step 2 - On your browser go to the Evasi0n.com  website and click on version of the operating system your computer is running.

    Then download the evasi0n software:

Once it is downloaded - unzip the file.

You will see the evasi0n 1.4 1.5.3 folder (per above) - double tap to open it up.

    Step 3 - Launch - evasi0n app.

    Then simply click on "Jailbreak"

Sit and Wait.  After you click "Jailbreak" above you will see some messages about the status of the jailbreak (see below).

Step 4 - After a couple of minutes you will get a message about needing to unlock your device and tap the new jailbreak icon to continue  (see below).

Step 5 - On your iOS device slide to unlock the screen and then find the new evasion icon on one of your home screens.  Tap on it just ONE time.  It will quickly look like it is launching the app and flash black and then will return to the home screen rather quickly.  The jailbreak will then continue on (see below).

Step 6 - Once the jailbreak is finished - your iOS device will going through some restarting cycles - this should take a few minutes.  Once it stops going through the restarting cycles and it looks like it is in sleep mode - you can tap on "exit" and that is it - you now have a jailbroken iOS device.

Step 7 - If in step 0 you had turned off your screen lock or SIM Pin lock - now is the time to add those back.

Step 8 - To really see if you are jailbroken - unlock your iOS device and look for the brown Cydia App iCon - it should be in the same location as where you tapped on the evasi0n iCon in Step 5.

Launch the Cydia App. The first time you launch it you will see a message "Preparing Filesystem (cydia will exit when complete)" - and per the message Cydia will quit out / exit when done.  Once it does this - relaunch Cydia.  The second time you launch it you will be asked "Who Are you?"  with the options of "User", "Hacker", "Developer" -  if you are reading this - select "User" and then tap "Done"

Step 9 - Once it is done it will open up and you should see a screen that looks like that below.

One App almost everyone will want and that works on the iPhone's, iPod Touch's and the iPad is the app SBSettings.  This moves important settings / controls to the notification dock where they are always quickly available.

To install this app Tap on "Search" in the bottom row of Cydia and then in the search box type "SBSettings"

Next Tap on "SBSettings" the top one - not the one any of the others.

Read the warning.  Then Tap on "Install" in the upper Right corner

Then Tap on "Confirm" in the upper Right corner

The App will then install - when complete Tap on "Restart Springboard"

Then in the Settings App under Notifications - Go to SBSettings and turn it to "On".

Next launch the SBSettings app - and look at all the options.

That's it you are now jailbroken and have your first real jailbroken app running on your device.

Please understand sometimes installs of apps are interrupted - in which case you need to try and re-install.  Things are not as stable when you jailbreak - expect some additional crashes and conflicts between apps. Which is why if you install an app you no longer plan to use - it is best to delete said app - the more jailbroken apps you have installed - the higher the probability you will have a conflict.

Note: If you have an iPad - do not - repeat - do not - install Five icon dock - it will really mess up your iPad and you will need to restore it.  However that app works great on the iPhone and iPod Touch.

    Hi_Rob,

I used Image Searcher Pro to find a good Walk of Fame star and podcast logo.  Used Touch Retouch to remove Britney Spears name.  Finally, did the rest using ArtStudio for iPad.

    Transcript for Episode 258

    -----------------------------------

Ok - I think today's episode is going to be a long one - so you may want to put it 1.5 X mode for playback - just sayin

Seems iOS 6.1 was not the update we thought it was.  Or put another way - iOS 6.1 has had some issues.  Apparently Scott Forestall is still refusing to apologize.  Oh wait he is not there anymore - so not sure who will apologize about the latest issues.  As mentioned on the last episode there were some issues with iOS 6.1 and 3G connectivity especially in the UK - well iOS 6.1.1 for the iPhone 4S only was released early last week which fixed that bug.

However there were a few of you that sent me emails about your IT departments sending emails saying don't update to iOS 6.1 - and well that had nothing to do with the issues of 3G connectivity - nope that was / is about another bug - that was not addressed in iOS 6.1.1 - it is a bug with exchange server.  I guess what happens with iOS 6.1 is that it can cause your iOS device to do excessive logging on the Exchange servers which is both bad for the servers and bad for your iPhones battery life.  So if you are hitting a corporate Exchange server with your iOS device and you have not upgraded to iOS 6.1 - DON'T do it.

According to ZDNet a fix is on the way in the version of iOS 6.1.2.  So what do you do if you did upgrade to iOS 6.1 or 6.1.1 already - well one of the work arounds listed on the Microsoft support board was  do not process calendar items such as meeting requests on iOS 6.1 devices and to also immediately restart your iOS 6.1 device.  Some are reporting on the Apple forum boards that deleting your exchange server account, rebooting your iOS device and then adding back your exchange server account fixes the issues.  So if you are having issues - that is one thing to try.

But wait there is more - others are reporting battery life issues with iOS 6.1 and iOS 6.1.1 - but it is possible that the battery life issues relate back to the excessive logging from the exchange server issues.  Those with battery life issues are reporting over heating and quickly draining batteries.  So if you think your battery life is just a little bit shorter than before - that is not the issue - this is about people who used to make it the whole day on a single charge now not being able to make it to lunch on a single charge.

And if all of these issues were not enough - wait there is even more.  Seems there is also a security issue with iOS 6.1.  The security issue found has to do with getting past your lock screen with out the passcode and being able to get access to a persons contacts - where the hacker could view or modify contacts, check voicemail and look through your photos.

This is not an easy hack but it is now well documented on Youtube and elsewhere - so here is what needs to be done.

    First part:

-Go to emergency call, push down the power button and tap cancel.

-Dial your local emergency call number and tap green and inmediately red.

    -Go to lock screen.

    for the second part:

    -Go to passcode screen.

-Keep pushing down the power button for 3...seconds and before showing the slider "turn off"...tap the emergency call button and Then without releasing the power button press the home button and ready… And well I think I might have missed some points - so if you need to hack into your kids iPhone and check their voice mails you will need to check the youtube videos.

Yeah not the easiest hack - but it is repeatable and if someone stole your iPhone and wanted access to some of the data on your iPhone they could get it.  Which obviously when used as a work phone is less than ideal.

For Apples part they have said they take these type of issues seriously even if Scott Forestall refuses to apologize.  And that Apple is working on a fix which will be out shortly.  In the mean time simply don't loose your iphone or let someone have access to it - where you don't want them to see any sensitive photos or listen to sensitive voicemails.

So how serious has the Press viewed this issue - well it did make it to the front page of CNN and other mainstream websites.  Which was not surprising at all.  It is safe to say iOS 6.1 - is not Apples finest moment - not that iOS 6.0 was really much better.  That said if you don't have a passcode on your iOS device - like say me - then this security issue is not an issue - but if you are in a relationship with multiple people - yeah it could get ugly quickly - but then shame on you for being in a situation when you can't be open with your significant others.  But on the corporate side or Government side is where this really is a sticky wicket for Apple and why I think you will see a fix for this before the end of Feb - again in the mean time - just make sure no one steals your iOS device - see how easy it is to be secure.  More on this story for sure in the near future.

Hi Matt - thanks for the feedback - I believe the app he was talking about is Week Calendar - two words in the iTunes app store - it is $1.99 - and it shows the ability to copy and past items in their calendar. Matt - if this was not the app you mean - please send an email with a link to the correct app in the iTunes app store or the correct spelling in the Cydia store. But either way - Week Calendar which is in the iTunes apps store should work for what Dave was asking for.

    Hi Rob,

First, I want to say I'm a new listener to the show, I started on Episode 256, and I'm enjoying the show so far.

Onto my question, this past Christmas, I flew out of state to visit friends and family. I parked my car at the airport, but considering that it was 3:30 in the morning, I just drove an hour and a half, and it was starting to snow, it was hard to see where I was parked. Needless to say, when I returned, it took awhile to find my car.

To prevent this in the future, I was looking for a app that will mark my parking spot then I can use the GPS on my iPhone to remember where I parked. I looked on the AppStore and there were a few options but I want to know what you think. Thanks for your feedback.

    Regards,

    Mark

Mark - I am throwing this one out to the audience - folks if you have a favorite and easy app that you use to pin where your car is when you leave it at the airport or the mall - let us know.

Hi Rob, so, I'm getting pretty sick of Google asking me for my location every time I use it for research on my iPhone 4S any help with that?

    regards,

    David in Springfield

Folks - did anyone figure out a solution for this issue yet?

I mean other than changing your default search engine to Bing.

    Hi Rob,

I wanted to make sure you saw we just released an update for our Kindle app for iPad and iPhone.

Here’s what we posted in our customer forum about it:

Kindle for iOS 3.6 is now available in the Apple App Store. New features include:

    * Multicolor Highlights - Four color choices make it easier to distinguish important passages.
    * Book End Actions - Just finish your book? Share the accomplishment with friends on Facebook and Twitter. Rate and write your own review.
    * Brightness Control - the brightness setting will now be saved across device sleeps.

    Thanks,

    Kinley at Amazon.

Tim Cook spoke at a Goldman Sachs Tech event last week - Essentially he repeated much with which he has said before - so nothing really new that came out of the speech.  But one good zinger he had in there was with regards to iPad and its Tablet Market share and reports of it dropping.  Tim said quote “I have no idea what the iPads market share is, because we’re the only company that reports what we sell.” unquote.  Which is sooo true.  And even anyone else that has even hinted at numbers only gave shipment numbers - not sell through to the consume like Apple does.

In the well it sucks to be blackberry news segment - Home Depot announced they were dropping the Blackberry for their 10,000 executives, managers and corporate employees and switching over to the iPhone.  Evidently the new Blackberry10 was not enough to keep them on board.  Home depot joins a growing list of Corporate and government groups ditching the blackberry in favor of the iPhone.

Now of course it is not just the iPhone sales that are doing well - it seems if you combine the Apple iTunes revenue with the Apple Accessories Revenue that Apple generates - those combined revenues are greater than the revenues of all other smartphone companies sans Samsung.  Last quarter those two segments generated almost 6 Billion in revenue for Apple.  Vs just 5.4 Billion dollars for all of Nokia's smartphone revenue.  Apple's stock is where it is again why?

We have talked in the past of iOS device dominance when it comes to this strange thing called usage.  Well we are going to talk a little more on this subject now.  Freewheel a mobile online video firm reports that 60% of video clips viewed during Q4 were viewed on an iOS device vs just 32% viewed on an Android device.  Once more showing that in general Android users get an Android device to just make calls - but they get and iPhone when they need more than just a phone. Again in general.

Seems the CEO of Linked-In is an iPad mini fan so much so that he gave out iPad mini's to everyone of his employees - 3,500 iPad mini's or there abouts - That news was shocking to me - who would have guessed linked-in had 3,500 employees.  What the heck are they all doing?  I mean other than now playing Angry Bird and watching American Horror story on Netflix.

Since the last episode the rumors have been coming hot and heavy about an iWatch.  One rumor said that Apple already has a team of about 100 product designers working on a iWatch type device.  Another report says Apple is looking to purchase Pebble.  Pebble's CEO said quote I can't comment on anything like that unfortunately" unquote.  Now not sure if the unfortunately refers to not being able to comment or not being offered life changing money from Apple yet.  As mentioned last fall and around Christmas when the last batch of rumors came up on this subject - I think Apple will introduce an iWatch and hopefully sooner rather than later.  I just am not sure if this is just more smoke or if this time there is a little fire to go with it.  I so hate getting my hopes up on this subject - but this time - the smoke is a bit thicker than before.

Speaking of iWatch's and Pebbles - we have in our first listener review of a Pebble.

Staying with Rumors but switching to the iPhone - With supposed pictures surfacing in China of the next Gen iPhone this early - it does line up with the rumors the next gen iphone - the iPhone 2013 will launch in June time frame and not the fall as it did the last two years. Per the pictures it looks like the next gen iPhone will be the same look slash case as the iPhone 5. Going with the the iPhone 3G and 3GS and then the iPhone 4 and 4S also using the same case design for two generations. But again if these photos are real and they appear to be so - then a June launch seems much more likely and lines up well with the how soon past photo leaks came out for other generation of iOS devices. Or I could just be hoping that is the case because I am eligible for a full upgrade to a new iPhone in June as I am sure many many other iOS 4S owners are as well.

    Rob,

I know this may not be considered to be directly related to iOS but I use Dropbox extensively on my iPhone and I assume others do also. Box is something similar. Most free accounts of this type are only 2 to 5 GB. They are now offering 50GB free for life - which is a super good deal. It only takes about two minutes to complete the sign up process. I just signed up my whole family.

    https://www.box.com/signup/o/dell_50gb_give_get

    Don from Guntersville AL.

Thanks Don - Folks look for the link in the show notes for ep 258 titled Box 50 GB free for life to get this deal. Always nice to get some extra free cloud storage.

One of the stories make the rounds this past week was about a prediction by an anal-ist on how much revenue MS is missing out on by not having Office available for the iPad - the number by the anal-ist is an astonishing $2.5 Billion dollars - The problem is no one seems to be questioning his numbers. First he says it is based on 200 Mil iPads - when in reality there is not yet 150 Mil sold. Second he works the numbers out at $60 average sales price - that means to get to the $2.5 bil number after Apples 30% cut - 30% of the 200 mil ipad owners would need to purchase Office. Yeah - not going to happen. At 150 Mil that % jumps to 40% of iPad owners. And figure how many have two iPads and how many are to kids and yeah it quickly looks like 100%+ of adult owned iPads would need to be buying the $60 version of Office. Or you know they could just by the $10 version or Pages or $10 version of Keynote or the $10 version of Numbers or some combination there of for $20 or $30 max total. So yeah the $2.5 bil number is not pie in the sky numbers - it is cow pie in the sky numbers. Just sayin. So if you are someone that saw those numbers and thought that my kick MS in the butt to get Office out for the iPad - think again - I am sure they did similar number crunching I did - and came out with numbers much much lower than $2.5 Bil of lost revenue. While I think it would be great for MS to release Office for the iPad - I would not actually buy it - as I am happy with Pages / Keynote and numbers.

I guess time may soon tell on this one as the last rumor was a March or April release of Office for iPad.

Blackberry looks really really stupid right now with picking Alicia Keys for a celbrity spokesperson. First up until the day before they announced her as a new spokesperson she was busy sending tweets from her your guessed it - iPhone. Then last week she apparently sent another tweet from her iPhone - which was then deleted and followed up with a what the heck I must have been hacked tweet. O M G give me a break - do you think anyone believes that for even a second - especially since there are pics from your dressing room table at the grammy's the night before the tweet showing two iphones sitting there.

Where Blackberry really messed up - was in getting a celeb endorsement from someone that was not a blackberry user.

I am sure if they did their homework they could have found someone in hollywood or the entertainment world that still used a blackberry - and it would have been much more whats the word I am looking for - Oh yeah - authentic. And a heck of lot less embarrassing.

    Hi Rob,

Here we go again so last week you had a story about malware on the google play store. Now they are sending those malware makers your name and location info. People would be outside apple with torches and pitchforks if apple ever made a mistake of this magnitude. Thanks for all you do rob love the show.

    Regards Justin B

What justin is talking about is that when you are a Android user and you purchase an app in the Google Play store your name, general location and email is passed on to the developer and you are not in any way shape or form given any indication this is happening.

And That includes potential sending that info on to those that were putting malware in the Google Play store - Brilliant!!!! Good thing Google is not Evil - because then you know then they might also pass along your blood type and any history mental illness or Plastic Surgery. Just Sayin   And for the record - no this story did not make it to the front page of CNN or any other mainstream website.  Seems stories like this on the Android side don't get the same level of scrutiny as those with Apple.  But I can assure you if this was Apple passing along personal info about each buyer to app devs - the amount of outcry about this would have broken the inter webs.

Hi George the insurance is Square Trade - and you go to square trade dot com slash tii to get $30 off your iPhone warranty.  There is a banner over at today in iOS dot com with a link to the place on their site for the discount.

    Hi Rob,

My iPhone recently committed suicide jumping out of my pocket onto a tile floor, landing face first and shattering the screen.

Luckily I had square trade. I filed my claim that day, and i was surprised that one of the options was to have a full replacement sent to me, so of course I chose this. Heard back the next day, Unfortunately they had no stock of my iPhone 4s, :-( so I could  either send it in it take it to an apple store where I'd have to pay upfront, but they would reimburse me for this.

Because I can't even imagine life without an iPhone for an hour, let alone a few days, I chose to take it in to an apple store where they have me a new phone.

I was impressed with square trade's service throughout the process.

Once I got my new phone and restored from backup I was super impressed with iCloud. It re-installed ALL my old apps, music and settings. I had to re-log on to everything, but that's totally acceptable.

The one problem I am having is that iMessage won't verify the main email account I've been using for iMessage. I can't figure it out. It's working fine on my iPad. I've tried re-sending the verification email but I never receive it. Any help on this would be great. I'm missing a lot of messages because of this.

    Regards,

    - Jessi D

Hi Jessi - thanks for the feedback.  Again as I mentioned on the last episode another great feature about square trade is they do not care if you jailbreak - so when getting a new iPhone - if you go with a square trade warranty you can still jailbreak your iPhone and not void the warranty - as you would with Apple Care plus.  Plus if you go to square trade dot com / tii - you will get $30 off your warranty for being a Tii listener. Bringing a two year warranty down to just $94 - which is cheaper than Apple Care Plus as well.

    Hi Rob,

I recently had an iphone4 that was not being used anymore,  go missing. It had been used now just for games and music, when said iphone went missing I dove into action and from previous knowledge of listening to show had already had it registered with the find my iphone app, from there I set the phone first to play a sound to see if one of the kids had snagged it. But soon realized it was turned off and offline, I then sent phone into lost mode to be pending once phone would connect to wifi. Two weeks go by and I got the confession that my daughters friend was eyeing it when she was over at the house, and thinks she took it. All of a sudden today I get an email saying your iphone has been located, checked the map of where it was and that turned out to be an AT&T store. I called said store and asked if there was an iphone there that was in lost mode and confirmed that it was, gave them the proper identification and drove down and retrieved my iphone. Just another good reason to activate any old devices even if you are not using them as much with the find my iphone app.

    Regards,

    Kevin W

Kickstarter finally has an official app in the iTunes app store - and it is free - just search for Kickstarter in the App store.  They claim you can use it to discover new projects, watch project videos, and get updates from projects - that is for the backers.  It also has features for the Project creators - such as staying in contact with your backers, tracking your projects progress and most importantly posting updates to your project.

And speaking of Kickstarter Thanks to Thomas for the heads up on this next Kickstarter project and it is the Smarter Stand for iPhone and iPod touch - all generations of said devices.  They have already hit their goal of $15,000 - with $18,000 plus already and this one goes on for quite some time - until April 12th at 11:29 AM ET.  Right now there are still some early bird special pricing of $9 left.  Yes this is from the same people that made the smarter stand for the iPad - this time the device allows you to both wrap your head phone cord around the smarter stand - but also use it to prop up your iPhone or iPod touch.  Again right now it is just $9 - check it out quickly before they run out of early bird offerings and the price goes up to $12.

    Hi Rob

Not sure if you've seen the Helios Bluetooth Light Controller (LC1) for iPhone on Kickstarter.

It looks like a great device: lets you control your lights from your iPhone.

I've backed it but not convinced it'll be funded due to their high funding goal. Plus you can only pledge for one. Oh well. Fingers crossed.

    Search fro Helios - H E L I O S - at kickstarter dot com.

    Regards,

    Danielle

    Pemberton, BC, Canada

Hi Danielle - yup looks like one of those very cool projects - with a high goal in this case $300,000 dollars but with a low pledge amount <10,000 to date - and too short of a time frame March 7th at 8:24 AM ET - to really have much of a chance at this point of getting funded.

    Hello Rob,

As one of your visually impaired listeners, I would like to bring the article about fleksy to your attention. I think you should give Fleksy a try yourself, the developers have been awesome as far as supporting blind iPhone users and it appears that Fleksy is also attractive to somebody who

can see the virtual keyboard and why wouldn't it be, you can type away as fast as you can without having to worry to exactly hit each letter. I really look forward to hearing

whether you think Fleksy is pretty cool and whether you would set it as your default keyboard or at least include it in your keyboard choices were that is possible:

    http://blog.fleksy.com/post/43160706356/state-of-touch-typing-fleksy-goes-fr

    ee

Maybe after the other listeners hear about Fleksy they will give it a try especially since it's a free app now and some might call in to give Fleksy their vote whether it's positive or negative.

    Regards,

    Sieghard

Hi Sieghard - thanks for the heads up - I have downloaded it - but have not had a chance to try it out yet.  But I will do a call out to anyone that has used the Fleksy keyboard app - that is F l e k s y - and it is free in the app store - so if you have used or do try it out - please let us know your thoughts.  206-666-6364 - that's 206-moon-dog - or send an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com.

There was some news from HBO that their Go iOS and Cinemax's Max Go Apps now have airplay streaming capability.  Which is fine - but the real news I thought was the side part of their comments that HBO Go would land on Apple TV later this year as an App.  Wonder if this is just an special deal just for HBO - or if later this year Apple TV will finally be allowing apps to be installed.  Lets hope it is the later and not the former.

    Hi Rob,

Per a previous callers question about recording sound on an iOS device.

I have an app for my iPad that allows me to record the sound coming out of it called Notes Plus. It is only for the iPad though.

    Regards,

    Jessi

On the 14th I received the following email

    Hi Rob,

Nice to see Cydia back to normal. No warnings, SSH blobs back.

    Just saying.

    Chris

Thanks Chris - I agree - it looks like everything has finally calmed down and if you were holding off on jailbreaking - no time is better than right now.

Hi Rob, I have a iPhone 4S can I unlock it and jailbreak it? I'm gonna sell it. Is this okay or I should I just jailbreak it??

It's with AT&T and yes I payed it off. I upgraded to iPhone 5

    Regards, Robert

Hi Robert - I get this question often - and it is time to talk about it again.

First Call AT&T and ask them to unlock your iPhone.

They will unlock it for you.

You will then need to do a restore.

Once you restore after they tell you - the phone will be unlocked - You will now this because at the end of the restore it will say it is unlocked.

Then once it is unlocked you can jailbreak it.

FYI - unlocking it will increase its value more than jailbreaking it. Doing both is even better.

Thanks to Todd and the many others that let me know PDAnet has been updated for iOS 6.x which is good news.

    Hi Rob,

A great tweak is UIDeviceCrasher. This will show you after an App, Mod or Tweak is installed, that it may cause issues and may cause crashes. It loads and displays a Pop-up at the beginning, after the respring.

It says which apps may cause issues. And you can uninstall them. Rather than uninstalling one by one to find problems.

After saying all that. Mine says Auxo the App switcher Mod is a Problem. But its not really as far as I can see. Also says Winterboard is a Problem. But not seeing problems with it.

But in any-rate, good to use to see incompatibility issues, wether you act on them or not.

    Cheers, Chris in london.

    Hi Rob,

Seems Mobile substrate has been updated.  I like looking at what is new in updates.  While checking out MS, I saw this interesting tip.

So, it looks like if your iDevice goes into an infinite reboot loop, you can try holding down the Volume Up button to disable Substrate.  Might stop the looping so you can remove the offending tweak.

    Regards Steven W.

Thanks Steven - and he sent over a screen shot about the Mobile substrate tweak that said the following quote You can now disable substrate entirely by holding down the Volume up button as the device boots.  This feature allows you to bypass horribly broken extension (ones that prevent the device from starting up at all.  that you may have installed so you can open cydia and uninstall them. unquote.

So this is a powerful tip for anyone that jailbreaks and goes crazy with installing tweaks and apps and finds out one or some of them hose your iOS device - now rather than having to restore - you can boot in a kind of safe mode and uninstall tweaks and apps to get your device to work again.  Remember the more apps and tweaks you installs the higher the probability you will need this fix.  Things do go wrong with jailbreaking - this tip helps you deal with it.  Thanks Steven for the tip.

Hey Rob  I just updated to iOS 6.1 and then jail broke my sprint ip4S , as I was going thru my apps. I wanted to watch some of my movies on my Flixter app that I downloaded thru ultraviolet. But when I hit the download button I got a pop up telling me that my phone was jail broken and that I should update to an official iOS if I want to watch the content. How is it that Flixter app knows that and why to they feel the need to police the users on having a jail broken device???

    Regards Tono

Hi Holly and Tono - This has happened before where some apps dealing with digital media - put these checks in place to make sure you are not installing a jailbreak app that lets you get around some security they have in place.

I believe there is a jailbreak tweak that then tricks those devices into not thinking your are jailbroken.  So yes a jailbreak tweak that tweaks your device to trick others apps to not know you are jailbroken.

I can't remember the name of the app - but will send a call out to the audience for the tweak.  Which is what I guess I just did - if anyone remembers the name of said tweak - please let us know - 206-666-6364 - that's 206-moon-dog or send an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com.

A little jailbreak news - Yes iOS 6.1.1 came out last week for the iPHone 4S - but luckily it is still jailbreakable and evasion was upgraded to v1.3 and works fine for jailbreaking iOS 6.1.1 - as long as you did the upgrade to iOS 6.1.1 when connected to your computer via iTunes and not as the Over the Air upgrade.

Thanks to tash for this next one which is about a Cydia Tweak that allows all Notification Center Notifications to be sent to a Pebble Watch.  So if you have a pebble watch or more accurately if you have one on order and are waiting for it to come in - you will want to look into jailbreaking and then installing the Cydia tweak called BTNotificationEnabler - all one word.  It is free in the Cydia App store.

There are estimates that as many as 10Million iOS users have jailbroken their iOS 6.x device already.  Some are saying this is a huge number - and points to the general dis-satisfaction with iOS 6.x - however 10 Million out of 300 million is still a pretty small percentage at 3.33% - and in line % wise as past jailbreaks.  So really I think this is just about a small % of users wanting to do more with their iOS device.  I do believe Jailbreaking and jailbreak apps are a great showcase for Apple on what the iPhone can and many cases should do - and each update sine iOS 2.0 there have been new features added that were tweaks created first on the jailbreak side.  It will be interesting to see which current tweaks make their way to iOS 7 - but I hope Apple continues to monitor the jailbreak world and look at all the great tweaks available and ad as many as possible.

Thanks to Woody for the heads up on this next one which is a review of the Smartlav lavalier Mic for the iPhone.  It is $60 and if you are looking to podcast with your iOS device and use the boss jock app - this might be a nice option to look into.  They claim in their video that this is a professional grade Lavalier mic.  I have not tried it out - but will ping them for a review unit.  If anyone has actually purchased this or does purchase it - please make a recording and send it in.  I would be interested in hearing the audio quality on this.

I think I want to do a new segment near the end of episodes every so often - that segment will be my review of some accessory for iOS devices I am playing with.  For this episode I am going to talk about the RockSteadyXS bluetooth Portable Speaker.  This is a very compact size speaker with a very not compact sound.  Which I really like as I need a portable speaker for when I do speeches that can really put out some serious volume.  This one allows both Bluetooth and line in connections - so I can also use with my Laptop. They state it has a life of 10 hours with a full charge - I used it for over 4 days on the full charge they shipped it to me with for well over 10 hours of use - and it is still working.  Sadly no charge level indicator to know if I am about to run out or not - but their 10 hours of battery life is conservative which I like.  One really neat feature - the Lithium ion battery is easily removable from the base of the unit and is a standard BL-5c battery pack - So down the line when the battery has run out of charge cycles - you can replace it or better yet buy an extra one as a back up.  I saw some BL-5C battery packs online in a quick search for between $8 and $15.  The RocksteadyXS had really impressive sound for the size and is much louder than my current portable speaker which is over 3 times the size and weight.  So this will become my new portable speaker.   It also allows for charging of your iPhone via a USB power out port - you can plug your iOS devices charge cord into.  So it can also be an emergency battery back up - another reason to get an extra battery pack.  They have a list price of $99.99 - but who pays list price.  Amazon has it for $89.99 right now.  I was able to quickly pair it with my iPhone which uses Bluetooth 4.0 and with my wife's iPod nano which is also bluetooth 4.0 with no issues as well as with my iPhone 4 which is bluetooth 2.1. so it should work fine with all iOS devices.  All in all I found the RocksteadyXS to be a good looking - good sounding portable speaker with the features I need to be my new portable speaker.  Especially the easy replacement of the battery pack.  as I will be getting an extra battery back shortly for this. At $89.99 from Amazon it is a good price for the performance and features - especially when you it compare it to competitive speakers.  Link in the show notes over at today in iOS dot com.

    Loyal Listener

    Hi Rob

I wanted to try and help your listener out it's having trouble with his Apple TV.

I ran into this exact same issue on one of my Apple TV's.

My eight-year-old one day seen that there is an update for AppleTV and tried to install it on one of the jailbroken devices. This of course resulting in bricking it.

I then tried to apply the update using iTunes going to the exact same steps as your listener did with the same results. iTunes either would not recognize the device or would ask me to try to upgrade later.

I tried this on a Windows 8, Windows 7, and a Windows Vista machine all of the same result. I still have an old laptop running Windows XP I decided to give it one last shot before throwing my AppleTV away & to my surprise iTunes recognize the device. I'm not certain what the differences between Windows 8, 7, Vista, and XP, they are all running the exact same version of iTunes. But for whatever reason the Windows XP laptop was able to fix my Apple TV.

So my advice is to find a buddy with a Mac or PC and trying to reset it, keep going until it works. Your other option is to take it to an Apple store and beg to have somebody reset it to factory defaults.

    I hope this helps

    Transcript for Episode 257

    -----------------------------------

Obviously this episode is going to start off talking about Jailbreaking.  And now that the evasi0n jailbreak is live and had a chance to stretch its legs a little - I believe it is safe for most people that want to jailbreak to go ahead and do so.  I will be putting together a tutorial that covers the jailbreak and Cydia app this weekend.  I am myself waiting until the weekend to jailbreak my main phone.

As always not everyone listened and waited and the feedback from those that did not wait was well lets read some.

    Hi Rob,

Jailbreak Done. Easy and smooth. No issues

Cydia bit busy.  When Cydia calms done will do my Pkgbackup to restore my Cydia App and Mods.

I did look at the compatibility list and un-installed those tweaks I had that were not 6.1 ready before I started.

    Regards,

    Chris in London

    Hi Rob,

I had to refresh at the main page the "windows" link because it failed to find the file to download.

But once downloaded the jailbreak process went as smooth as can be.

You have to unlock the phone and press an icon on phone to finish the process.  But everything was explained as per what to do.

Second easiest jailbreak to do ( after jailbreakme.com !

But now that I have cydia and trying to download an app " bitesms" and others It's just returning with error codes.

But it's just good to have cydia on my phone again.

    Regards

    Dane

    Hi Rob,

Just wanted to let you know that I jailbroke my iPhone 5, iOS 6.1 last night using the evasi0n tool on my Windows 7 netbook and it went fast and smooth- with 1 exception.

At first, evasi0n was not detecting my iPhone. I would run the .exe, plug in my phone, but the "Jailbreak" button would not be clickable. I found out that you must have iTunes installed. I had recently formatted my netbook and put on a fresh version of Windows 7. I was especially excited to not have to install iTunes since I use Spotify for music now and OTA updates for iOS. Even though my iPhone was recognized  by Windows to access photos, installing iTunes installs additional drivers that evasi0n apparently requires.

After I installed the latest version of iTunes, the evasi0n tool worked like a charm.

    Regards,

    -Matt

    Hi Rob,

Good news is Cydia rather stable now. Most all I'm installing running fine.

Pretty much back to where I was. A few Apps and or Mods and tweaks still need 6.1 compatibility.

Took a while. But running great. faster, smoother, better battery life.

    Regards,

    Chris in London

    Rob,

I waited until Wednesday night to jailbreak to make sure the load on the servers was lighter. One friend had already jailbroken & said his only problem was downloading some apps from Cydia early on.

The only thing I ran into was with something I'd never tried before. When I clicked to install an app, I decided to "Continue Queueing" and see if installing multiple apps would save time. When I did that, something timed out and I ended up installing each one individually - respringing each time.

Thanks all for the feedback and there was much more - but there was one over riding theme from those that updated early - the Cydia store was pretty much useless the first day or so.  And well with out the Cydia store the jailbreak is really not useful.  Hence one of the reason I said wait - why jailbreak so early if there is nothing to do once the jailbreak is done.

Now it does appear most is finally working well - and one bug found has already been addressed - which had to do with the weather app not working right for many.

However I did get this email:

    Hi Rob,

i need some help... any idea why after jailbreaking and then syncing my phone did all my playlists go away :(.. i have them on itunes.. but not on my phone! helpppp!!

    Regards,

    Holly W

So if anyone else is having issues with play lists after jailbreaking - please let us know - 206-666-6364 that's 206-moon-dog or send an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com

And speaking of the weather app - one thing unhidden with the new jailbreak for iPad owners is the Weather app.  Which is something my son will like when I jailbreak my wife's iPad.  Mind you it is not a universal Weather app - it is just the iPhone Weather app - So it is not the prettiest thing on an iPad - but still it is the weather app on your iPad.

Make a “Backup” for your iOS device using iTunes or iCloud before use the tool of EvasiOn. Through this advices, you will absolutely sure that your data will not be untouched by any damage.

Remove password lock screen, do not put any protection foundations in your iOS so that EvasiOn will work without any defects or problems.

Be patient when you do the jailbreak process. Don’t run iTunes or Xcode during the jailbreak process.

The best thing for Jailbreak free from errors is not touching the computer in any way, so as to ensure the best results.

I did do a jailbreak of one of my iOS devices - my iPhone 4.  First off to do back ups of your iOS device and syncs of said device.  Also best to make sure said device is updated to iOS 6.1.

Once that is done - you need to close out iTunes - make sure it is completely shut down.  Not minimized - but closed out completely.

Make sure there is not lock passcode on your iOS device.

Make sure your iOS device is already connected via USB to your computer.  If it launches iTunes - make sure to close it out completely.

    Then go to the site - evasion.com spelled - e v a s i 0 n dot com

Then read over all the info on the front page.

Then click on your operating system of choice - Mac OS X, Linux or Windows - and click the button below the iOS devices on the page.

Then at least on the mac - click on the next screen where it says quote click here to download your attachment unquote

About a minute later on your desk top open the file that just downloaded.

Then in the window that opens up - double tap on the evasion icon.

Or if you prefer open the read me text doc. Which just gives a few more warnings.

After your double click on the evasi0n icon you will get a pop up.  Just click on the button labeled jailbreak.

Then you will see the progress bar of the jailbreak.

This is a good time to get some snacks or coffee or both.

A few minutes later you will get a flashing message that says - To continue please unlock your device and tap the new jailbreak icon. only tap it once! (with emphasis on once) the screen will quickly go black and quickly return to the home screen you were on.

So you know at that point do as instructed.  You need to then find the new jailbreak app icon on your iOS device - it will not likely be at your home screen - so make sure before you do this - you have some room to add an extra app.  Not sure what happens if your iOS device is full of apps and no room for a new app.  Probably best not to find out - just make some room before hand and you will be fine.

Once the jailbreak is all done you will get a message on the app on the computer that the jailbreak is complete and the device may restart as it completes.  Once you see your device has restarted - you can click exit on the evasi0n app on your computer.  You should then see the brown Cydia App in the same place where the evasi0n app was during the jailbreak.  Launch Cydia and go find some apps. Well after Cydia does its thing.

Even with me typing out these notes on what I was doing it only took about 15 minutes for the full process - from downloading the evasi0n app on the computer to jailbreaking my iPhone.

One of the reasons I did recommend you wait a few days to jailbreak is that there typically is a new version of the jailbreak released in the first few days that fixes a bug that was no discovered until millions of users start using the jailbreak and guess what that was the case again with version 1.1 being released rather quickly.  It fixes the bug with the weather app on iPhones.  The other reason to wait is that Cydia just can't handle all that traffic at once - and every new jailbreak it basically breaks Cydia for a couple of days.  Now it appears Cydia is almost back to close to normal - but even so - Thursday evening I was getting a little issue when trying to install the 5 icon dock tweak - it timed out the first time I tried to install - it did work fine on the second attempt.

This weekend looks like a good time for those that waited to finally jailbreak their iOS 6.x devices.

Good luck and I will put up a step by step tutorial shortly - I will send out a push when it is up.

For those interested in stats on the jailbreaking.  Pod2G put up a post going over the countries with the most traffic to the evasi0n site.  There were 3 million visitors from China for first place with 20% of the traffic.  The US was second with 2.5 Mil visits for 16.9% of the traffic.  France came in 3rd with 5.8% of the traffic.  This was all traffic through Wednesday.  So the over all numbers for the US and China and everyone else have grown.  But interesting to see China in first place vs the US.  If you are in China - what are the key apps you are jailbreaking for?

And one more piece about jailbreaking - or really Apples response there of.  Apple updated their dangers of jailbreaking article.  Which is titled quote  Unauthorized modification of iOS can cause instability, security vulnerabilities, shortened battery life, and other issues unquote

The important part of the article is the ending which reads quote Apple strongly cautions against installing any software that hacks iOS. It is also important to note that unauthorized modification of iOS is a violation of iOS end-user license agreement and because of this, Apple may deny service for an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that has installed any unauthorized software.   unquote

As stated previously on this show - Apple can deny a warranty claim even with apple care plus if your phone is jailbroken.  Hence why I recommend Squaretrade as their warranty covers jailbroken iOS devices.

    I  did get this email

    Hi Rob,

I'm thinking about jail breaking my iPhone 4S and I know how to do it. What are some of the risks involved and can it completely damage the phone?

    Regards,

    Joe

Well Joe and all - the biggest risk to jailbreaking comes to those that have an Apple care plus warranty - as Apple says they void said warranty if you jailbreak. Beyond that the next biggest risk is loosing data during the jailbreak if things go sideways. Which is why I say to back up before hand.  There is also the risk of bricking your device - which I have to say in all the years of jailbreaking - I don't thing I had anyone that permanently bricked their iOS device from jailbreaking - sure plenty bricked it - but with some effort they eventually were able to get their iOS devices working again.  But yes theoretically there is a risk.

The other risk - is that the device just becomes unstable and unusable - and that is not so much a risk from the jailbreak - as it is from installing apps on Cydia that don't play nice together. The more cydia apps and tweaks you install - the greater the probability of your iOS device acting flakey.  Jailbreaking is not for all - if you like order, peace and calm - jailbreaking is likely not for you.  Now if you are jailbroken and start to see issues - look at the apps you recently installed via cydia and start un-installing them one at a time until the issues go away.  Also as you go about with your jailbreak - and try many new apps and tweaks - please make sure to uninstall the ones you no longer use - again the more cydia apps and tweaks you have installed the greater the probability of issues.

Thanks to Chris in London for also pointing out that Apple launched iOS 6.1.1 to developers - key features listed are improvements for Maps for Japan - and by maps and japan - they mean security exploits and jailbreaking.  Obviously stay away from this version if you want to jailbreak.  Especially when it goes live.  Again if you see iOS 6.1.1 go live - don't upgrade if you plan to jailbreak or if you are jailbroken.

IDC released their Quarterly numbers for tablet sales for Q4 2012 and the iPad's dropped in market share to 43.6% of Shipments. I called Tom Mainelli at IDC and talked with him about this report. First question was about the Shipments part - As apples numbers are based on Sales not shipments. And Tom did confirm that their numbers for the others are based on shipments into the sales channel not Sales like Apple and he did suspect that there is a good amount of inventory still in the channel on the non-ipad side - in other words lots of android devices sitting on shelves looking for a home. So Apples % of Tablet Sales last quarter is something higher than 43.6%. I asked about how he came to the shipment numbers for others in the first place - as Apple is the only one publicly reporting numbers. And he did confirm that the numbers for shipments for the others is a combination of talking with the sales channel - ie where the devices are trying to be sold and talking privately with the manufacturers. The Amazon number was more about sales channel. We did talk a little about how if you remember from last year - Amazon put a lot of units into the sales channel in Q4 of 2011 - only to have in Q1 of 2012 a drop on the shipment side to less than 750,000 units. He did not say this outright but I will - expect that to be the case again with many of these other manufacturers. Again while the 43.6% number may be close when looking at shipments in the sales channel last quarter the number is very likely well below the actual % of sales of Tablets last quarter and for that Apple is almost certainly still well above 50%. Thanks to Tom at IDC for answering my questions.

To back up the idea of sales being above 50% for iPads.  Comes Chitika's tracking of on line traffic with tablets and they found iPads for January representing 81% of all web traffic from Tablets.  Number 2 was Amazon's kindles with 7.7% of traffic.  Sammy's galaxy tablets were 3rd with 3.9% of web traffic.  Googles nexus tablets came in 4th with 1.7% of traffic.  So clearly once again Apples iPads dominate Tablet web traffic.  So people can talk shipments all they want - for sales and use of said sold devices - Apple still clearly dominates the tablet space and 2nd place is not even close. And here is something more amazing to thing about - when it comes to world wide traffic - which this was not - just US and Canadian traffic - when it comes to world wide traffic the iPad is going to be even more dominant as the majority of iPad sales are actually outside the US - while the majority of 2nd place the Kindles are in the US. The kindle has very limited distribution. So again when you look at the difference between usage %  and shipment % it means either the Android tablets are sitting on selves waiting to be purchased or they are sitting in draws not being used - either one is good news for the iPad and Apple.

On the stats side - Comscore was looking at US Smartphone subscribers and what they found is that iPhones were up last quarter to 36.3% of all smartphone subscribers active.  vs 53.4% for Android and 6.4% for Blackberry and 2.9% for Microsoft.  When they looked at the manufacturers and not the OS.  Apple was in first with 36.3% vs Samsungs 21% in 2nd and HTC in 3rd with 10.2%.  Motorola was 4th with 9.1% and LG was 5th at 7.1%.  So yeah all that doom and gloom talk around Apple stock - still not getting it.

Another stats article - this one about browser usage for mobile devices.  Net Applications tracks usage of mobile browsers and saw a decline in usage by android devices last month.  iOS Devices are capturing 61% of all mobile web traffic vs 21.46% for all android devices.  But wait I thought there were more android devices out there than iOS devices - how could this possible be.  I mean it is almost as if those with android devices just got the phones to you know make calls and nothing else. Just sayin.

Sprint reported their quarterly numbers and per the iPhone they sold 2.2 Million last quarter which was a new quarterly record for them.  It is now being reported that last quarter Apple was the single largest seller of Cellphones - both smart and dumb combined in the US.  That's right Apple sold more iPhones last quarter than any other manufacturer of cellphones be it smart or dumb combined.  Wow.  And Apples stock is down again why?

Ok - one more article on stats and survey's I need to mention ok need is not a good word - how about want to mention.  This is a report from Forrester that claims that 200 Million IT workers want Windows Tablets.  What they found is actually based on as survey of 9,766 global information workers.  And of those 32% want a Windows tablet. 26% want an iPad, just 12% want an Android tablet.

Now I would say IT people are going to be more slanted towards Microsoft so the numbers make some sense.  But from what I have been hearing about the Surface Pro - Yeah - that is not the Tablet they are looking for.

Yeah - lots of surveys and stats out this past week.  And in summary for iOS devices it looks really good.  A much different picture than what you hear from some of the Tech talking heads and blogs out there.  Just sayin.

    Hi Rob,

For the benefit of the Aussie asking about SOS showing instead of the signal strength bars. It means you don't have coverage with your provider but could make an emergency call to 000 using another network.

    Thanks for the show,

    Cheers,

    Bert

Thanks Bert for the answer on that.

Also a thanks to Toni P in San Fran who was at Mac world iWorld in San Fran and was able to take a picture for Listener and artist Iszy Iszard - it was a picture of his artwork being shown at Macworld.  Iszy as done some incredible artwork in the past for the show - It is amazing what he can do on an iOS device.  If you go to i s z a r d dot com you can see some of his artwork.  Thanks Toni again for helping out Iszy.

Hey folks a quick heads up - All of Rovio's titles have dropped to $0.99 - seems to be something just for this weekend.  So if you are missing any of the apps in the angry birds franchise - now is the time to fill out your collection.  Be it Angry Birds Rio, Angry birds Space, Angry birds Start Wars, Angry birds Buckaro Bonzai in the 6th dimension, Angry Birds Battlefield Earth or any other Rovio title - now is your chance to get them cheap.

Thanks to Steven for the heads up on this next one.  Which is for all iCloud users.  It is a link to Apples post about limits for contacts, calendars, reminders and bookmarks with iCloud.  For example you are limited to a total of 25,000 calendar events and reminders.  And a max of 100 different calendars.  And there is many other items this post goes over with regards to limits with iCloud - so if you are a super users of Contacts, Calendars, reminders and bookmarks - check out this post - in the show notes for ep 257 over at today in iOS dot com.

If you are using vodafone and you have and iPhone 4S - then Vodafone wants you to know - do not - repeat do not upgrade to iOS 6.1 if you have not already done so. Seems that iOS 6.1 for some reason is causing issues with Vodafone users with the 4S when it comes to 3G connectivity. Which you know kind would suck. So again If you have an iPhone 4S - and it is just the 4S - and you are on Vodafone - then do not update to iOS 6.1. There are also some reports of other users of the iPhone 5 having issues with other non US carriers around the world - per connecting to 3G networks. So if you recently upgraded to iOS 6.1 on an iPhone 5 and are not in the US - and are having issues connecting to 3G - that is the reason..

Looks like Apple has lost the naming rights to the iPhone in Brazil.  A company IGB filed to register the trademark for iPhone in brazil back in 2000 and was awarded the rights in 2008.  The company IGB started to sell their own Android powered phone under the name iPhone in Brazil back in December 2012.  And now it looks like Apple is loosing the rights to the name.  So does that mean the only iPhone in Brazil will be one with Malware running an OS with version named after deserts.  No probably not - as the company IGB has already hinted that for the right price they will go away.  Well actually when asked about selling the names rights they said quote We're open to a dialogue for anything anytime unquote.  Guess we know what Apple is going to use some of its cash for in 2013.

OK - So yes - surprise surprise some people are using Vine for Porn.  But apparently Twitter is doing a good just of hiding said porn.  And really - 6 seconds of Porn?  Any way I tried out the Vine app last weekend when I was in St. Louis for some safe for work uses.  I am under the vine user name podcast411 - and I took shot a few Vines of my oldest son at his first Dayton Flyers basket ball game - and also with him eating his first white castle hamburger.  Both items are scrap book moments.  Per White Castle I should also mention I used the free white castle app to find the white castle in Columbia MO on my drive back from the Flyers game in St. Louis.  If you are curious about where the closest White castle is or if you plan to travel where they are located - check out the white castle app in iTunes.

But back to vine - one of the things that is tough with it - and I am sure it is on purpose is editing is just not intended.  It works where when you tap on the screen it records - when you release it pauses - you do that until you have 6 seconds of video - that then gets posted to vine and runs on an endless loop when someone comes across it.  You can also have it post out to your Twitter account and your Facebook account.  Will I be doing more vines -

maybe - as if you are looking to do a really short video - think a moving picture - then Vine makes it easy to get it out to the world.  But the lack of editing - where you simply go back a little really is annoying.  Maybe in future versions they will add a little editing and filtering to it.

I am guessing it will be more a fad then anything else.  Who knows.

We have report on Malware to talk about - Oh wait this is malware for Android - not iOS - Never mind.  Oh ok if you are going to twist my arm - sure I will go over this report.  Seems there is a new Malware found right in the google play store.  This one sends SMS messages, gathers info about the device, uploads any SD card plugged into the device, uploads SMS messages, deletes SMS messages, and it even will infect a PC that the Android device is then connected to.

Did we mention that this one was in Google Play - Googles official App store - so how did Android fan boys spin this - well by saying the following Quote I usually recommend sticking to Google Play to avoid the larger majority of Android threats, in this case the best advice is to only download apps with high download numbers and from trusted developers. unquote  Really - So the best advice to android users is to only download apps from the google play store to start and then only those with a large number of downloads - wow - And you know it almost makes me feel sorry for Android users.  Almost.

Ok - one of the stranger iPad news stories - In Atlantic City - there was a firefighters swearing in - and any swearing in you need to have a bible - that is common knowledge - right - well apparently not to the person that was supposed to bring the bible - so What did they do - well someone had an iPad and they opened the bible app on the iPad and did the swearing in on the bible app on the ipad. I kid you not.

    PLAY JON_CO_QUEST_APPS

    Hey Rob.

I've got a problem. I found a app that was only available at the UK App Store. I was offered the option to switch that store to get the app and I did. Now I don't know how to get back to US App Store. Do you how to switch back? I have the new retina iPad.

    Thanks,

    Eric

    Hi Eric,

In the App store app - go to the featured page - scroll down and click on your account - log in - and then you can change countries from in there.

    Regards,

    Rob

Hi Rob,  I just wanted to give you and the listeners a heads up on a game app that is shutting down and on some great news about how apple has responded.

Long story short, the game Monster Maestro is shutting down in March of this year.  They claim that they will transfer any in app purchases to one of their new apps via a method yet to be determined.  Well I don't want to play the new app I spent my money on this app.  I contacted apple about this app and their bait and switch tactics, and apparently I'm not the first, the apple support person told me that they can refund my in app purchases for Monster Maestro for any made in the last 90 days.  I was on the chat for a few minutes, and then my iphone blew up with all the paypal notices of the deposits (Yah, I spent a lot of money, so another reason I was extremely pleased.)  The refund was fast and super easy.

I am extremely pleased that apple has handled this so quickly and effectively.

I wonder if android users get this kind of support when one of their malware apps drains their bank account?  Just saying...

    Regards,

    Steven

Steven - thanks for that email - it is always nice to get a good Customer service report about Apple - everyone tends to focus on just the bad.

    Rob,

Thought this was interesting. I just bought something from iGear the other day and evidently the guy that started that company is doing this project.

    Regards,

    Don G.

    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1974299897/intellacase-the-worlds-smartest-phone-case?utm_source=iGearUSA+-+The+Big+List&utm_campaign=a0c3b61c6c-Black_Friday_sale_email11_22_2012&utm_medium=email

And what Don is talking about is the Intellacase - spelled i n t e l l a c a s e  - and it is over at kickstarter dot com. However this one looks like it has very very little chance of getting funded - it has until Feb 24th for funding and had raised just $4,500 vs a goal of $175,000 - like I say keep those goals down.  What the intellecase is is a combination of a case and car keys - with models for Audi, BMW, Chevy, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Toyota, Lexus and Mazda.  Sadly no volvo - as those keys run $400 bucks to replace.  But then again this project is not getting funded so it does not matter.  But if you want to see more on this search for intellecase at kickstarter.

This next one is already funded and it had a pretty high goal of 250 thousand dollars.  To date they have raised over 352 thousand dollars and they have until march 9th at 5:19 AM ET for the funding. So What is said project with so much interest in such a short time.  It is the really horribly named and I kid you not  Almond plus 802dot 11 ac touchscreen wifi router plus smart home hub by securifi.  Of course you can just search for almond and the plus symbol one word.  This is a quote blazing fast 802.11ac wifi 1.17 gb/s router compatible with 100's of z-wave and zigbee smart sensors all in one exquisitely designed device. unquote. It is being offered for $99 and they already have over 3,200 backers.  What is really nice about this router is that since it has a touch screen it can be 100% set up with out a computer.  Which is really great if you are an iOS household with out a computer.  And if I had not just plunked down almost $200 recently on a router I would definitely be looking at this one - The $99 price is pretty sweet - for a touch screen controlled router - then you add in the other features for sensors and home automation - and it is a really sweet deal - hence the reason they blew quickly past their  pledge goal.  I will make sure to check back in on this one on ep 259 as well and see where they are at on the funding side.

Thanks Tash for this next one - which falls under the category of where you find your self wishing you had some automatic way to clean your iPads screen say maybe a small roomba type robot you could just sit on the screen of your iPad when you are not using it and it would go to work cleaning your screen.  I mean come on - I am not the only one that has wished for this type of device am I?  Ok - maybe I am - but if you are wishing for this too - good news - it has arrived and it is called the Auto Mee S robot.  It is about $17 if your in Japan - And well the date is March 28th or later.  I guess in the mean time you are stuck you know using a cloth to manually clean your iPad.  How 2012.

Rumors and speculation that makes up being part of the apple news ecosystem - and this time we have a bunch of groups coming together for this next rumor.  First there was the rumor of a Retina iPad from iLounge, Then there was a report from Endgadget about a new version of the Apple TV 3rd gen - which is a 3rd gen version 2 - not a 4th gen Apple TV.  And apple recently confirmed to Endgadget there is a new Apple TV 3rd gen that will use a smaller version of the A5X processor than the original 3rd Gen Apple TV.  That admission then caused Marco Arment from Instapaper to postulate the reason Apple is running with the new smaller A5X processor in the Apple TV 3rd gen is to do a trial run of the processor leading up to its use in the next gen iPad mini - and the only reason to use this smaller A5X processor in the iPad mini is if you are going to go with a retina display - thus jiving with the rumor from iLounge.  Afterwards they all got on the phone and talked about how NASA faked the moon landing.

    Hi Rob,

Do you know if there is a jailbreak tweak available that will give the stock Calendar a capability it is so sorely lacking: the ability to copy and paste a meeting?  I would like to be able to select an event in the day view, select copy, and then go to a different day and paste a copy of it.

    Thanks,

    --David

Hi David - I will throw that one out to the audience if anyone knows of a good tweak for the calendar app for David - please let us know - 206-666-6364 - that's 206-moon-dog - or record it on your iOS device and email to today in iOS at gmail dot com.

     Hi Rob,

I'm wondering if you or your listeners could get me up to speed on the best jailbreak options for making my iPhone 5 into a WiFi Hotspot.

    Regards,

    > -Matt

Hi Matt - this is a question that comes up multiple times at every major jailbreak announcement - and honestly is one of the key reasons people jailbreak.

The one I had been using was PDAnet - the main reason I like it - is the hide data usage feature - plus it just worked well with iOS 5.x - however so far it seems PDAnet is not working with iOS 6.x .  If anyone has another Wifi Hotspot app / tweak that works with iOS 6.x  they want to recommend - please let us know - I used to use MyWi as well - if anyone is using that - please let us know plus let us know if there is something else you are using - 206-666-6364

    Dear Rob,

I'm thinking about tethering. But I recall that AT&T started cracking down a while ago, and I don't want to lose my unlimited data plan.

Could you, or your listeners, tell me how likely it is to get caught by AT&T using the different jailbreak tethering apps, or any other reasons why to choose one over the others?

I have found three: MyWi, PDANet and TetherMe, although PDANet has not yet been updated for iOS 6. Anything you can tell me would be appreciated.

    John in San Mateo, CA

Well John - PDAnet would have been what I recommended - hopefully someone will find a good solution and let us know about it.

    Hey Rob,

I saw this tweet from muscle nerd and was kind of curious about it. Is

there some particular reason that you're aware of that you believe

this might be the last jailbreak that we see? Just wondering. Roll Tide!

    Regards,

    Don from Guntersville Alabama.

    Hi Don,

I will let you get away with the roll tide - given you kinda had a good year or years  or will it be decade.  Plus I went to college with your basketball coach Anthony Grant and used to play pickup basketball with him in college.  Love to name drop.  But per your question - Well I have heard that before - when a dev team said this could be the last one.  But somehow someone figures it out.  So far Apple is a 0 for 6 in that each major revision has been jailbroken.  So I would not worry about the comment. If Muscle nerd can't figure it out - someone else will.

    Hi Rob,

Here is a link to a Handy list of Cydia 6.x compatible Mods, Apps, Tweaks.

Also After you get the basics. Get RespringCacheFix  all one word.

It gets rid of Temp files created on each App download and makes for faster restrings.

    Regards,

    Chris in London

Chris thanks for that list also thanks to Sebastian that also sent the link for it - folks you can find the list in the show notes for ep 257 over at today in iOS dot com - look for the one titled - iOS 6 Cydia Tweaks Compatibility - if you are jailbroken on iOS 5.x and have some favorite

tweaks and are thinking of upgrading to iOS 6.1 and jailbreaking - it is worth your time to see if you favorite app or tweak is available for iOS 6.1 - like PDAnet - which is not.

Thanks to Tash for the link to a best of macworld 2013 wrap up.  The folks at Macworld had for some of their best in show devices but the one I wanted to mention is the Mauz - which one a best of show device - despite the fact this device is still at the kickstarter stage.  Actually it will be at the kickstarter stage until at least March 8th at 1:19 PM ET.  So what is the Mauz - spelled M a u z.  It is a quote smartphone enabled pointed device that allows you to control computers around you using your phone, gestures and visual cues.  unquote.  Or as they put it further down on their kickstarter page - the Mauz is a minority report interface powered by your smartphone.  Pricing for this is $59 and they have raised $22,000 towards a goal of $150,000.  So think of this as a supper remote that combines the features of a wii remote and kinect that allows for physical gestures above your iOS device with the mauz.  Will be interesting to see how this one does.  If you want to find out more on it - search for M a u Z at kickstarter dot com.

    Hi Rob,

I guess I might get my letter read in a mocking tone, but I am a bit confused on how to upgrade my iphone 5. I'm not jailbroken.

I'm a long-time listener, love what I have learned, and sometimes have to look up the things you say to do to figure out how to do them. For a long while, I didn't know how to "force quit" my apps. Probably everybody else in the world knows how to do that. Take it easy on us "older generation". We are trying to figure it out.

I am currently running Version 6.0.2.

Your instructions for upgrading to 6.1 says the instructions are for upgrading from 5.X. Are these instructions still for me?

Yes - you still need to upgrade to iOS 6.1 - you can do that via over the air update by opening the Settings app - and then go to general and then to software update.

I am using a PC but I don't use much software on my computer to remove photos, can I just delete them from the phone itself?

No don't delete them from your device if you have not sync'd them over to a program on your computer.  I only recommended importing to them into another app like iPhoto - and then to delete them - but if you are not importing your apps into another program - then don't delete them.

How do you "remove the lock on the sim card?" Does that mean remove the actual sim card? Or is that a setting somewhere on the phone?

It is a software setting - again from the settings app - then the phone section - then to SIM Pin

    Then turn it off.

Remember after you are jailbroken to turn it back on.

May I ask what harm is it to just upgrade the phone using the Apple "Install Now" feature?

None - you can go and do that.

I'm not in a hurry to upgrade and will wait until I feel comfortable with it.

    Regards,

    Hey Rob

Just wanted to give my experience of the Evasi0n jailbreak. I downloaded the jailbreak as soon as it was available and expected cydia to be slow and buggy. It was but that only lasted a few days and Cydia was updated and working much better. Since then Evasi0n has been updated twice to iron out some bugs. Love having cydia and my modifications back:)

    Regards,

    Ivan from Toronto.

Hi Rob, I jailbroke my iPhone 5 last night and I would like to share my experience. This was my first time jailbreaking an iDevice and I am surprised at how straightforward and quick the process was. I started by deleting all of my unused apps and then performed a local backup to iTunes. Once that completed I synced my photos to iPhoto and removed the screen lock. I gave the iPhone a reboot for good measure and ran the evasi0n 1.1 jailbreak. It completed successfully in just under four minutes.

I want to point out that my iPhone is running iOS 6.1 and I updated from 6.0.1 over the air. There have been several warnings posted about possible issues with the evasi0n jailbreak for users who had updated to 6.1 over the air. I however could not find a single persons citing an OTA update as the cause of an unsuccessful jailbreak, so I decided to risk it and I'm glad I did.

I'd also like to pass along a quick app recommendation. PhoneClean is a Windows and Mac app that cleans up cache files and junk files left behind by applications. It's free, extremely simple and works well. A co-worker of mine was able to free up five gigabytes of data from a misbehaving app on his non-jailbroken iPad2 and I was able to free up nearly a gig on my iPhone 5.

    Regards,

    Marc T

    Hi Rob,

Just wanted to say my son and I have jailbroken our Iphones with no issues for 6.1.  We both have Iohone 4s Black 16 and 32 gig phones.

It took about 7 minutes for each phone with no issues at all.  Simply backup your phone and run the program.

I have not jailbroken my phone since IOS3.x.  Can you briefly review the 5 top apps needed such as APTBackup, OpenSSH to change the ROOT passwords etc.  It would be a great help as I don’t remember everything I need.

    Regards,

    Cedric G

Hi Cedric - if you have never changed your root password - then it is still a good idea to do so.  You need to install the mobile terminal app to do so.  Look for the link in the show notes for ep 257 titled Change SSH root password.  There are some good instructions there.
