In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote “The first troubling sign is the fact that you can still get an iPad today. They didn’t sell out. The pure slate form factor has failed all these years because, other than for vertical applications, people want and/or need a keyboard for regular use.” unquote

Jonathan Yarmis, Ovum, part of Datamonitor Group, 6 April 2010

Jonathan was correct about the iPad not selling out right away - it took a few days - then they were hard to find for months.  But what he did not realize is that Word of Mouth would then cause sales to take off - Once People used the iPad they quickly found out it was not like any other Tablet before it and they liked it - they really really liked it.

If you had any issues last weekend and early this week calling into the show - my voicemail line is fixed - 206-666-6364 - that is 206-moon-dog.  Seems k7.net had an issue with all 206-666 prefixes - and cell phones not being able to call those numbers - land lines worked fine for the most part - but cell phones got the this number is not in service message.  Again the call in number is working again.  And remember you can also just record a message on your iOS device and email it to me at today in iOS at gmail dot com.

Now lets get in to this episode.

On Ep 311 at the beginning of the episode I went over some of the new features and settings in iOS 8 - This episode we will pick up where we left off on the that episode - if you have not listened to ep 311 yet - you will want to go to the beginning of that ep around the 4 Minute 20 second mark to hear those other features.

Per new features and settings -

In the settings for Messages - You now have the option - Store Messages - by default this is set forever - but you can also choose for 30 days or 1 year.  For those complaining about messages taking up multiple GB's - this is one way to get back a lot of that space.

Under FaceTime options there is now the option for iPhone Cellular Calls for the iPad - this lets you use your iPhones cellular connections to make and receive FaceTime calls on your other iOS device.

For Safari - as mentioned before there is now the addition of DuckDuckGo for a search engine to go along with Google, Yahoo and Bing.

Aslo added to Safari is the Option Quick Website Search - When turned on it will use the smart search field to search within websites by typing the website name as part of your search.

Under Block cookies there are new options - before it was Always or never or From 3rd parties and advertisers.  Now it is block cookies - Always or never or Not from current website or Not from previously visited websites.

In the music app - there is now the option Genius - which if you turn on will send information about your library to Apple.  It is off by default - and you want it off for battery savings.

In the Photos & Camera App - there is a new option - iCloud Photo library -  quote automatically upload and store your entire library in iCloud to access photo and video from all of your devices unquote - and this one is turned off by default.

In the Podcasts App settings - there is now the option - Background App Refresh.  This is on by default - turning off will save some power.

And just as expected - iOS 8 Beta 2 came out this week.

Here is one email that came in - which is why I have not updated my iPhone yet.

    Hi Rob,

Something must have changed with Bluetooth. The Pebble cannot maintain a Bluetooth LE connection. I'm guessing it's going to take a Pebble update.

I'm getting poor battery life on the pebble and only texts notifications.

    Regards,

    Anonymous

And I did hear that from others as well - If you have a pebble watch - don't upgrade to the beta yet.  I am now holding off upgrading my iPhone 5S to iOS beta until at least I get back from NY after the 4th of July weekend.  Don't want to be traveling with issue with my Pebble.

Ok - The absolute biggest news about iOS 8 beta 2 - for podcasters at least is that the Podcasts App will now be native in iOS 8.  Joining the iBooks app as a stand alone app in iOS 8 moving to a native nope you can't delete it app in iOS 8.  Diggitty diggitty diggitty - this is huge huge news for Podcasting.  This means come end of October over 500 million iOS devices will have a native Podcasts app on them - and by this time next year well over 750 million iOS devices will have the podcasts app.  I will not go into to much detail here about what this means for podcasters - but listen to episode 24 of the Feed when it comes out in about 10 days and I will go over in great detail what it means for podcasters and what you need to do to prep your show for it.

Outside of the Podcasts app becomes native - some other news and new features for iOS 8 beta 2 are the following.

Apple updated Safari where it now blocks ads from automatically redirecting to the App store without user interaction.

Speaking of Safari - If on the iPad - and you have safari open and you pinch in - it will then show you what other browsers tabs are open not on your device but on other iOS device and macs. When I did this I could see a list of all the current browser windows open on my mac. and a list of those open on my iPhone 4S and 5S and my wifes iPad mini.  We are talking devices running OS 10.8, iOS 6.x and iOS 7.x - Really cool and really creepy at the same time.

Quicktype keyboard suggestions are now available on the iPad as well.  Quicktype is fun to play with - Start a sentence with Apple as the first word and then tap on the first suggestion and what you get is well gibberish. But if you get any funny sentence that are clearly easter eggs lets us know.

Under Privacy there is a new Home Data menu that will list apps that access your home data via homekit.

The Assistive touch menu now has options for Control Center and Notification center.

In Notifications there is a big addition - You now have one master toggle to turn off all types of notifications from an App.  Before you had to go and turn on and off each type.  Now one toggle off and they are all off.

The Photos App has new albums for Bursts Photos and Slo-Mo videos.  Nice.

iBooks now combines books that are part of the same series.

There is a new Raise to listen option for voice messages.

And there are some other tweaks changes to buttons - but that stuff is boring or at least more boring than what I went over.

Again if you have a pebble - and you like your pebble and you use your pebble - then you will want to stay away from iOS 8 beta 2 for now.

We will talk more about iOS 8 beta software on future episodes.

But if you are someone playing with iOS 8 Beta 2 - and have some feedback - anonymously of course - please let me know - shoot an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com.  Or not anonymous - by calling 206-666-6364.

    Hi Rob,

Love the show. Always look forward to it every week.

I had a thought regarding Apples mobile gameplan and wanted to hear your thoughts about it: Apple said a lot regarding Continuity, iOS and the Mac OS. All good stuff to keep their products interconnected with the ability to throw a phone call, message, webpage etc, amongst iDevices and traditional computers. What wasn't brought up or introduced was any new hardware. Some have wondered why, others are still going over the presentation. What has occurred to me is that the rumored "iWatch" / Apple Wearable device isn't simply going to be a smartwatch/wearable. This device is going to be an alternative to the iPhone. It will be the wearable connected device that will provide the internet connectivity, allowing it to do all the fun stuff Apple has stated. For some, no more fumbling with your phone, just fling it from your wrist to your iPad, iPad Mini, MBP or iMac.

Your Apple wearable is now the gateway for all of your other devices. If you're a watch wearer you'll never lose this, there will be no "butt dialing",  no chance of people shuffling through your stuff or any other intrusion that happens with smartphones and tablets just laying around. The gatekeeper is going to be on your wrist.

If this happens the way I've envisioned it, this will be the twist that no other manufacturer has foreseen. And if executed in true Apple style there will be a lot of naysayers and dropped jaws in the near future. This is going to flip the mobile market on its head! I could of course be wrong... What do you think?

    Best regards,

Thanks to all that sent in this next one - and this for those living in Europe.  Apple warns that certain USB adapters sold with iPhone can overheat and you can exchange them for a new adapter.  The hot hot hot adapters in question were sold with the iPhone 3GS, 4 and 4S models between Oct 2009 and September 2012 - they also sold it during that time as a stand alone adapter.  You can see if you are the lucky winner of a hot hot hot adapter by looking at the bottom of the device .  If it is model A1300 - congrats - you win a trip to your local apple store and replacement adapter.  If you have model A1400 - you have the new and improved adapter and nothing more is needed of you.

Thanks Jonathan.  Some other apps recommended are Realtor.com,  Redfin,  Mortgage Calculator and Mortgage rates app by Realtor.com, Credit Karma and Homesnap.  Those apps were actually recommended in an article from iMore about apps for home buyers - but I could see them all being important to Realtors.

I had this email come in.

    Hi Rob.

I wanted to ask you and the listeners who use Apple's Podcast App a question about playing back podcast episodes. I tend to download, sync, and then listen to episodes of lots of my favorite podcasts in "batches" so at any given time I might have 3 or 4 episodes of a particular podcast to catch up on.

I've noticed that in some cases, the Podcast App will play all the episodes I've loaded onto the device one after the other.  But in other cases, it quits at the end of an episode and I have to go back in,manually select the next episode I want to listen to, and start playing it.  I haven't been able to tell what settings control that.

I'm curious if there's a playback option somewhere that controls whether you playback ALL episodes or just ONE AT A TIME.

Just curious why this happens one way sometimes and another way other times - and what (if anything) I can do to specify how episodes are played back.

    regards,

    Jeff in Springfield Illinois

I sent Jeff the following - Hi Jeff,

    In the Podcasts App

Go to your list of shows - My Podcasts

Then tap on one of the shows.  Then tap again on that show near the artwork at the top.   Then under the artwork you should see

    "Settings"  and "Share"

    Tap on Settings

For Play it should be set to Oldest to Newest

For Sort Order it should be "Newest on Top"

If you have those settings - then you should be able to go to the oldest episode you have not listened to tap play and it will keep playing until you get to the end of the newest episode.

The only thing that will stop the playback between episodes is if you are on cellular.  Then you may get a popup that asks about using cellular data for the new episode - I do believe that pop comes between each episode.

Other than that - the episodes should play back until the end of the newest episode.

And then Jeff did reply to my comments.

    Thanks Rob,

    Your tip answered my question.

As I’d noted earlier, some of my podcasts were doing this and some weren’t.

I saw that the ones that weren’t playing back all episodes continuously had their Play order set to "Newest to Oldest".

But when I switched it to Oldest to Newest the podcast app does play them continuous.

This is what I want it to do MOST OF THE TIME.

    Regards,

    —Jeff

As stated earlier - the Podcasts App will be native with iOS 8 - so I expect more questions out in the ether about the app.  I also expect a lot more people to be consuming podcasts.

    Hi Rob,

I wanted to reply to the listener who said he was using Daylite on his Mac for Managing projects and clients. I was really surprised that he was searching for an iOS app to complement it because I’m using Daylite on my Mac and on my iOS Devices too. As you can imagine they are very compatible and sync everything.

I’ve been using Daylite for years now and I don’t know how I would manage without it… I’m running a small (one woman) design agency.

Also the staff at Marketcircle are super friendly and helpful.

    You can find it here

    https://www.marketcircle.com/daylite/

    Hi Rob,

A listener wanted a replacement for ACT! contact management software. I recommend VIPorbit. It is authored by Mike Muhney who is one of the developers of ACT!.

More information on VIPOrbit can be found on Chuck Joiner's MacVoices Podcast, episodes 13190 and 13203.

We are now over 900 members in our Google+ community and growing.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One post in the G+ community this past week came from -

Craig Shipp - he said he was looking for an app that allows users to search and listen to supreme court oral arguments and did anyone have any ideas.  One answer came from Andrew Paez who suggested Pocket Justice.  If anyone has any other suggestions please look for the June 15th post from Craig and leave a response there.

I also had to delete my first post that had replies in it - and that was with regards to a service called shou - which was first developed for android and now is available for iOS and is supposed to allow you to record screen casts. They install some software on your iOS device - non-jailbroken iOS device - via some sort of side load.  The devs are from China on this.  And well I pulled the post because I could not verify how legit and safe this service is - they are installing an app on your iOS device that can record all going on on your screen and transmit it back to their servers. Ummmm - yeah nothing could possible go wrong with this set up.  I am doing some research and when I learn more I will post back on the community about what I find out.

    - This past week there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Folks Go to today in iOS dot com slash community to join in.

And thanks to all 900+ of you already in the community and contributing.

    new-family-plan-makes-it-easy-to-solve-the-itunes-identity-crisis/

Thanks to Dr. John also to the article titled - Apples new family plan makes it easy to solve the iTunes identity crisis from Forbes.com

This article goes into details about why and how Apples new family plan works.  Which is one parent becomes the Admin of the family account and invites other family members for a total of up to six people.  All linked iTunes accounts need to share the same payment method slash credit card.

This means more separation of sync'd data via iCloud - which is good - I don't want some of the info I am accessing to sync up with my kids devices.  And don't want podcasts I download to sync up - Joe Rogan and Marc Maron - are not exactly the type of content I want my 6 and 8 years old getting on their devices.

So it seems one idea behind family sharing is you can still share apps purchased among family members - but some other data you don't want to share can be kept from other family members.

    http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-06-19/how-

    an-iphone-update-lowered-new-york-citys-crime-rate

Thanks to all that sent in links to the various stories covering this next one.  And that is About Activation lock introduced in iOS 7.  This is the one when first announced was met with some skepticism from some prominent lawmakers - well guess what - it has made an impact - a big impact in apple picking.

In a report published on Thursday robberies involving Apple products in NY City dropped 19 percent over the first 5 months of this year compared with the same period last year.

Overall in NY City during that period yr over yr - robberies in general dropped 9.4% across NY City - and since about half of robberies involve mobile device the over decline in crime in NY City is directly related to the release of iOS 7 and activation lock.

So kudos to Apple again for Activation lock and glad to see measured results showing it is doing what people had hoped for.

Now there is a push by some lawmakers to do what they do best and make a law requiring carriers and cell manufactures to have kill switches on all new phones.  But I say hey just let people know the iPhone is available and if they want a device with a kill switch - it is available with iOS 7 and greater devices.  Why was tax payers money on a law that is not needed.  I mean really who is going to steal an Android phone?  Well who in their right mind that is - and if they are not in their right mind a kill switch on an Android device is not going to stop them from taking the device anyway.

    http://9to5mac.com/2014/06/18/iphone-6-likely-to-sport-

    barometer-air-pressure-sensors-to-measure-altitude-weather/

With the release of iOS 8 beta 2 some people have started digging through the code for other hidden features and one thing they found is that the Coremotion API's reference new altitude measuring abilities.  And it appears these are in reference to new hardware - IE the iPhone 6 may be getting a barometer - and yes cue back to some long ago episode when I chided an Android device for having a barometer.  You know - I really still don't get it for the iPhone either.

But I am sure come September and the iPhone 6 unveiling Apple will explain it and why it is important - and I probably will still go - huh - I don't get it.

    http://www.macrumors.com/2014/06/19/iwatch-2-5-

More rumors on the mythical iWatch.  This time it will be a 2.5 inch screen diagonally with a slightly rectangular face -  this is right in line with past rumors which had it with a round face and 1.3 inches in diameter.  Oh wait no that is nothing alike.  Ahhh the life of a rumor reader a new week a new rumor or two or three.  I would get into more details but why bother - 2.5 inches across ummm - not buying it one bit.  Not unless Johnny Ive has a long time man crush on Dick Tracy - which might be possible - but well not very probable.

MacRumors put together a piece trying to tie up all the different rumors on he iWatch - Thanks Brent H for the heads up on this article.

Per the specs - as mentioned anywhere from 1.3 to 2.5 ".

Round or rectangular or maybe a square or trapezoid or well it will have a shape.

Some rumors say it will run full iOS - others not so much.

4 to 5 days of batter life targets - unless it has more or less than that.

It will have biometric sensors - because it has to.

And it will launch tentatively in October.

Some rumors have it using Sapphire glass - other say it will be Cornings new Willow glass.

After reading the whole article here is what I took from it - Nobody has the foggiest idea on what this will be or do or if it will be or doing anything - it could all just be a big rumor mess.  Which is why rumors of Apple hitting production issues due to well pick any of the following:

    Battery Life

    Sapphire glass shortage

    Display technology issues

Manufacturability - i.e. it is too difficult to put together.

    Wireless charging issues.

Issues with liquid metal used for case

And the every popular - Seeing low yields from production

Good to see Macrumors was able to clear all this up so nicely.

Thanks to Jim M for this next one.

And if you are a long time listener - you may remember back 4+ years ago I did a blog post titled - Bogus App review site has hundreds of paid reviews in iTunes.  I went through and found some clearly bogus app reviewers and the apps they were paid to review.  I called them out and sent the info to Apple and then NOTHING.

If you want to read the post on the Tii website - look for the menu bar item - blog posts - click on it and select the top blog post listed.

The long of the short - again clearly there were un-ethical people doing paid app reviews - some of which replied in the comments - and Apple did not yank the apps.

Well now it seems Apple is finally getting around to pulling App reviews that are fake.

Sadly many of the apps I mentioned in my post 4+ years ago - still are in the App store and still have the fake app reviews.

It is still easy to spot an app with fake reviews - if you look at the chart of reviews - it looks like the letter C.  With a group of paid apps making up the 5 star reviews and then the real reviews making up the 1 start reviews and very little for 2, 3 and 4 star reviews.

Of course sometimes it looks like the letter L - that is when they get lots and lots of 1 star reviews from real folks - like the App Stocks with Tapfolio HD - which I called out 4+ years ago.

Thanks to Max for this next one.

Which is one of those stories that make you thankful you are not on Android.  Seems a Smartphone coming out of China comes preloaded with Malware - because they figured - hey you are just going to download some malware eventually - so you might as well get it pre-loaded to start with.  The phone in question is the Star N9500 - This phone is for sale on several major retail websites.  the Security company G Data that discovered the malware issue said it could allow a hacker to steal persona data, place rogue calls or turn on the phones camera and microphone - you know nothing all that major.

For the Article via AP - Bjoern Rupp Chief executive of Berlin based mobile security company GSMK said such cases are more common than people think.  Last Fall German cellphone service provider e-plus found malware on some handsets delivered to its customers.

Back to the Star 9500 smartphones - the malware is sending personal data to a server located in china and is able to covertly install additional applications - because you know the initial malware was not enough.

Like I said - makes you glad you are not on the android side of the fence.

At least one company is stepping up to help on this issue - Ebay - yes the same company that does not allow the sale of Lawn darts - is taking that drive and they are barring listings for Star N9500 after they found out about the pre-loaded malware issue.

    VOICEMAIL -  Johnathan_Wire_headphones.m4a

    Hi Rob,

According to AT&T, even though you may be connected to a wifi network, you are actually still using cellular data unless you drill down into the phone settings and turn off cellular data (and then, of course, turn it back on when you leave the wifi network). THIS MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE TO ME! (Yes, I'm on a rant.) If this is indeed the truth, then I think AT&T is ripping off it's customers who are under the impression they are not consuming data from their cellular plan every month.

Have you ever heard of this phenomenon?

    Regards,

    Jonathan Miller

    Hi Jonathan - interesting question.

There is a very easy way to test this.

Go to your router and disconnect the internet from it.  Leave it on and running so you still get a wifi signal to connect to - but you should not be able to get email or surf the web or download a podcast.

If you can send / receive emails or surf the web while connected - then the internet connection is via Cellular.

My understanding is that with AT&T and other cell carriers - when connected to wifi - it does not use cellular data.

But once you loose the connection to a wifi hotspot - then Cellular kicks in.

Again it is a quick easy test for you to try at home - and when I just did the test I found it worked how I would expect.  And that is it stayed connected via wifi - but I could not surf the web, download podcasts, send or receive emails or check twitter.  I had no internet.  Even though I had a good strong LTE connection.  Which once I turned off wifi kicked in and I could do everything.  So at least from my tests no cellular data is being used when wifi is on and you have a connection to a wifi base station - even if that wifi base station does not have an internet connection.  A wifi connection neuters your Cellular connection - as it should.

    Hi Rob,

I was listening to episode 311 and you were talking about 3rd party keyboards in iOS8.  I have to admit that I am really looking forward to this.  I have been a very happy Android user but lately made the switch to both an iPad 4th gen and an iPhone 5S.  I am not new to iOS as I bought a iPod Touch 2nd gen with they first came out.   I used Swiftkey on both my Android tablet and my Samsung S1 and later S3.  It worked nearly flawlessly in the way that it learned how I type and what words I may use next.  I could type an email about 2 to 3 times faster on my S1 than I could on the iPod touch.  Between it learning my typing technique and the fact that after a few letters it would give 3 words to choose from, I didn't mind typing on it at all.  I got my iPhone about a month ago, and typing on it was driving me crazy.  Then I heard that iOS8 was going to allow Swiftkey, and I am very excited now.  I've tried the other keyboards you mentioned, but Swiftkey is the best.  Regards,

    Chad

For those with decent memories you will remember me talking about the Legion Meter on Kickstarter - well this week - I got the email saying the funding period was over and I was being charged my $39 for the  unit.  Right now they have an Oct 2014 estimated delivery date - we shall see.  Once nice feature they added to the Legion Meter is a slide switch - this lets you switch between faster charging and data pass through with standard charging.  A really nice thing about this feature is when you switch it to faster charging - it blocks the ability for people to pass data through to your device at a public charging station - that is one of those theoretical exploits that the researchers from GT showed.  So this works as a kind of prophylactic for your iOS device when you start putting it into unknown ports in public places.  This is one I am really excited to try out and talk about on a future episode of the show.  Hopefully that will be an October 2014 episode and not something in 2015.  You listening to me SOS Charger and Soundband folks - yeah - I talking about you.

Thanks to Tash for the heads up on this next one. Which is the LaMetric  customizable smart ticker for life and business found in kickstarter dot com.  Think Textlite display shrunk down and controlled by your iOS device.  For those not familiar with Textlite displays - you actually probably are you just did not know it.  They were the long black rectangular display with red front - and text would scroll on it.

I know a little about this as I worked for a computer repair company in high school as I mentioned - and they were the national repair center for these displays.

Anyway I digress quite a bit.

The LaMetric is a miniature version of this and it had a goal of $69,000 - because why not - and they have raised over $78,000 and have until Fri August 1st at 8:58 AM CT for the funding.  Pricing on this is $119 while slots are left at that level - Then it goes up to $129.

I used to want to get one of the textlite displays for my Car.  That way I could put it in the back window and send message to the person behind me - like - Nice driving - or hey are you available to go out.  Or maybe even both.  Ah the mind set of a 16 year old.  I actually had a scrapped unit I was working on repairing to do that when I left for college.  Sadly I never did get it done.  Maybe now I could relive my youth.  Or not.

Anyway - I am digressing or regressing again - if you want your own mini textlite display that works with your iOS device to display relevant data or just totally irrelevant data - your choice - search for LaMetric in kickstarter dot com - their descriptions are not skewed by flash backs to a 16 / 17 year old geek working in a computer repair store.

They need your support. They are almost halfway there.

I just got my Tesla Model S and just love it. I can't wait to tell and show all my friends and family about it. It feels like driving the future, and no bad after taste like when I drove my gas-engine car to my sail boat to enjoy a pollution-free day on the water.

    Best regards

You can always tell the ones that don't really listen to the show - they either call me Robert or Bob.  So I doubt Rolf ever knows this goes up.  That said - I did think it was worth mentioning.

Folks if you have an Electric Vehicle - then search for myEV at indiegogo dot com.

But Rolf did mention something - I should mention any stocks I own - I put in the about section of Today in iOS dot com.  And yes Tesla is one along with Apple, Facebook, twitter and GTAT - that last one is the company supposedly making the sapphire screens for the next iPhone.

    Hi Rob,

Thanks for previously mentioning Fotor on your podcast. Fotor has been updated to version 4.5.0.

I wrote to you hoping you could review for its new features.

    New features in version 4.5.0:

1.PhotoBox: all photos taken with the in-app camera will automatically be added to the "Fotor" album stored in your device's photo albums.

(Tip: Make sure to open the album permissions or your photos in PhotoBox will be lost.)

2.Soccer Stickers: Know any big soccer games in 2014? Kick off your next soccer game with these-themed stickers.

    3. All in-app-purchase items are free (June 19th - June 27th)

I'd really appreciate your consideration for a review.

    Regards,

    Sharon

Well Sharon - You just did the review for me.  Fotor is a free app with in app purchases - which now are all free until June 27th.  This is a nice app and to get to the in-app purchases - take a phone with the app - then go to the photo to edit it - you will then see a shopping cart for a few of the options - click on it and download them all - I think there were about 4 different shopping carts to find in all.

    Hi Rob,

To the gentlemen with the question regarding using Verizon FiOS apps with a wifi router other than the Verizon provided one, let me reassure him that what Verizon told him is flat out untrue.  In my home I have the standard Verizon wifi/router which is bridged over to an Apple Time Capsule. The time capsule provides the wifi connection to all my devices.  If set up this way, all the Verizon apps will work.  I use the apps to change channels, schedule recordings, mange my DVR space, etc.

Verizon Modem/router -> Bridge -> Apple Time Capsule -> Wifi Devices

    Regards,

    Jerry

    Hey Rob,

Regarding the Verizon router question from Wayne on Item 0311, I have Verizon Fios and use an Apple Airport Extreme and have no problems at all using any of the Verizon apps. I can control any of the 3 TVs in my home, schedule recordings, etc.

I do have a Verizon router. I then plug my Airport Extreme into it and have the Airport Extreme set to (I believe it’s called) bridge mode. This is where I allow the Verizon router to set all of the addresses. I then use the Airport Extreme to create the wireless network and login to that on my iPhone and iPad. I never connect directly to the Verizon router wirelessly.

I would suggest Wayne tries this setup.

    Hi Rob

Is there a way to attach a PDF file to an email? I know you can compose an email from the PDF itself, but this doesn't work when you want to respond to an email and a PDF to it. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Brisbane

And I replied back to Steve -

    You mean like this?

In which I replied with a PDF in the email.

To do this it is simple - just open the PDF in iBooks and email it to yourself. And then copy it in the email you received from yourself and paste it into the reply of the email you want to send it in.

    Dear Rob,

I am one of the many blind people who own and love the  i-Phone.

Descriptive video has been around for a couple of decades at least.

It is a way in which descriptions of movies and other video programming is made available.

Generally, the producer of descriptive video  writes a script which is fitted into quiet parts of the movie.

I watched American in with descriptive video and the long dance sceens came alive.

You asked about third party keyboards your listeners like.

I am writing this e-mail using MBraille, a wonderful ap which alows blind people to write and edit on i-phones and i-PADS in braille.

We put our fingers where the braille keys would be and type away.

Apple talked about braille  support in ios 8.

MBraille is the best braille app out there and I truly hope Apple recognizes this.

    Regards,

    Jan B

    Thanks Jan for that feedback.

Here are a couple of emails - First is a question and then the answer.

    Hi Rob

I have had 2 different answers from Apple on this, so am seeking your clarification. I have just sold an old iPhone 4 and am wondering if find my  iPhone needed to be manually turned off before I did erase all content and settings or does erase all content and settings turn off find my iPhone if it had been left on? Just need to know so I can do the right thing and ensure the new owner doesn't have a locked device.

    Regards,

    Steve in Brisbane.

    Hi Rob

Somemeone from Apple clarified. You do need to turn off find my iPhone before restoring to factory settings as if you don't, the device is locked for the new owner and they need the old user's password to access the phone. The only way around this is this happens is to get the old user to login to iCloud and disassociate the device from their iCloud account.

    Regards,

    Steve in Brisbane

Steve - thanks for the reply back on that. Something folks should know as we get closer to the iPhone 6 and I am sure more than a few of you will be selling your old iOS device.

    Hey Rob,

Do you think IOS 8 eliminates the reasoning for jailbreaking?

    Thank you,

    Shawna W

Hi Shawna - NOPE - as long as you still can't have Display recorder or use the Hotspot for a grandfathered AT&T plan - there are reasons to jailbreak. And those are just two for me.

There is also the ability to have locked folders and 5 icons in a row on the iPhone.

iOS 8 actually guarantees there will be a jailbreak for iOS 8.

But does it reduce the need for some - Yes - each version of iOS that added in a feature that was jailbreak only before - removes the need for a few.

But since there are more people joint the iOS world all the time - I still think it is net sum gain for those that would want a jailbreak.  And as more people come over from Android - there is even more of a need.

So over all I think we will see more of a demand for jailbreaking when iOS 8 launches.

    http://www.ravpower.com/ravpower-rp-wd01-filehub-

    3000mah-power-bank.html

Hi Rob - I recently purchased something I think may be of interest to your listeners. It's called the RavPower Filehub, and allows you to stream video's, music and images to your iOS device.

It's creates its own WiFi network (ie it doesn't require an external Wifi network or cellular signal) and allows up to 5 devices to join at once to view media stored on it. The device has a SD card slot and a USB port allowing pretty much unlimited storage.

Think of a long car journey or camping during a downpour with the kids, up to 5 of you can access 5 different movies to watch at the same time.

In addition it can double as an iPhone/iPad charger as it has a 3000mAh internal battery.

It's only $45USD, comes in black or white and is similar in size and weight to an iphone.

Another feature is the ability to transfer photo's from the iPhone/iPad back to FileHub to free up space on your device.

I recommend using something like the 'GoodPlayer' app to get best use out of it as the default app 'Rav Filehub' doesn't' play every video filetype.

I find myself using it all the time now, I've transferred a large number of TV and movie files to the 128gb SD card i have, and use it that way, rather than the usual manner of connecting the iOS device to a computer and transferring files to an app like VLC, AV Player etc.

    Here's the product page - bit.ly/filehub

Thanks to Tash for this next one - which is a combo iOS / Mac OS tip - and it is about what to do if you have too many contacts and you are having issues with them syncing back and forth.

Granted the person they use for an example has 18,000 contacts - and started having issues when he hit 10,000.  Think.

I start to think when you have over 10,000 contacts - you know - they really are not contacts - but just random peoples info you culled from the internet.  Just sayin.

But anyway what one of the things mentioned was about setting up smart groups.  Which you can search for contacts with no email and not phone number and put them in a group.  Which I thought was neat.

I have a bunch of contacts I need to better organize - and a bunch of duplicates I need to delete.

Again - just a quick mention for mac OS and iOS users.

    Hello Rob!

I have a problem I can't manage to resolve on my own by searching on the Internet.

I gave my iPhone 4S to my mother. She has the latest iOS 7.1.1 with no

jailbreak. The last 2+ months she loses randomly some old messages in

the message app but not all the messages whether they are imessages or

SMS. For example I have been sending her for 5 months and now she has

messages only from the day before yesterday. At the same time she has

    other messages from January.

I have already tried to reset all network settings but the problem remains.

    Do you have any idea?

    Greetings from Greece

    Hi Rob,

I suspect you mat know that the original technical spec for this format did say how to pronounce the name of the standard… the same as the peanut butter. It did even include the line “choosey programmers choose Gif”. I personally think that the people who create things get to name them.

    Chris C

    Hi Rob,

Regarding the controversy that was brought up in episode 311 about the proper pronunciation of GIF, there is no better place to go for the answer than the horse’s mouth, so to speak. And the creator of the GIF format, Steve Wilhite, revealed at the Webby Awards in 2013 "It's pronounced JIF, not GIF.” Like the peanut butter.

    http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/22/tech/web/pronounce-gif/

Now that this has been disclosed, we’re all free to go on pronouncing it however we like. :-)

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote “I think I’ve mentioned this once or twice before, but it bears repeating until it sinks in: the Apple iPad is not unique, nor necessarily the best of breed in the media tablet sector it is spearheading. And it ain’t gonna help Apple shareholders any.’ unquote

Anders Bylund (The Motley Fool), 11 March 2010

I think I've mentioned this once or twice before but it bears repeating - Any Financial guys from Wallstreet type blogs have a built in anti-Apple bias that has proven over the years to be almost 100% wrong.  Just Sayin.

    Hi Rob,

iOS 8 works well - but slow in some cases.  Best to reload heavy power apps like online games.

    Regards,

    Kevin K

    Hi rob

I upgraded to ios8 as soon as apple posted the links on dev site.

I really like the new keyboard. It's very smart specially replying to texts.

Only 2 bugs I noticed are … AND I REDACTED THAT PART

    So far very smooth.

    Regards

    Dev

Per my redacting the part about bugs - I don't want to talk about bugs in the betas - because well they are betas - and the reason they have us looking at them is to find the bugs.  It is kind of like me saying to my wife I don't like the color of her hair curlers before we go out for the night.  Or asking are your going to wear that out - when it is just a towel.  iOS 8 is not ready yet - plus we will have lots of time to talk about bugs when iOS 8 Gold master is released in September or there a bouts

That all said I did install the beta 1 of iOS 8 on my iPad 3rd gen - and this is with out a doubt the most stable fullish featured 1st beta Apple ever released - IMHO.  I will likely be installing the beta 2 on my iPhone 5s if the 2nd beta is as stable as this first one.  It is not perfect and I have had a couple of crashes - but my kids who use that iPad the most are not complaining and minecraft works fine on it as does Netflix and youtube - so they are happy.   I should point out I did do a fresh clean install - so my iPad 3rd gen is starting from scratch and not from a previous back up.  This means any legacy issues were removed from the equation.

Some of the features I have noticed.  In Settings General - Siri

There is now a new feature - Voice Activation - where if turned on and the iOS device is connected to power - You can activate Siri by saying "Hey Siri"  unless you live in Philly, NYC or LI - where you say Yo Siri - ok - I made that last one up.

In Spot light search they added an option for Spotlight suggestions

In Accessibilities - Speech - there is a new feature call Speak screen - When enabled - if you swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen you will hear the content of the screen.  And you can control how fast or slow it speaks them and even have them highlighted as it speaks them.  That is a pretty cool feature.

Staying with Accessibility - There is a new Grayscale Options - that for your icons or other colors converts everything to grayscale.  This is also added as one of the options for triple tapping the home button - along with Voiceover, Invert colors, zoom, Switch control and assistive touch.

There is now an option called Video Descriptions - Which when activated and when available with videos automatically plays video descriptions.  Huh? more on that one in the future.

Nice to see as always adding more features to Accessibility - Thanks Apple.

Another new feature comes under Usage - which is a cool one.  It tells you the % of battery used by different apps in the last 24 hours and last 7 days.  For example 66% of battery usage went to Minecraft, 23% to Netflix, 5% to youtube, 3% to the home and lock screen and 2% to the game blox -  It does not show usage when charging - just battery usage when well using the battery. Note to wife - need to get the kids off mine craft.

Under Mail - contacts - calendars - there is a new item called Left Triage Action - Your options are Mark message as  read or unread and flag or unflag message.  This is for when you swipe left on an email message - by default it will be set to mark message as read or unread.  I usually flag a lot more messages then mark as unread - so I changed it there.

Under Calendars part for default alert times - there is a new option turned on by default - called Time to Leave - and it uses your current location to determine a good time to leave for upcoming events - yup sounds like a battery waster - make sure to turn that one off.

Another one for potential battery hoggishness - is under calendars Called Time Zone Override - by default it is set off.  Quote The Time Zone override always shows event dates and times in the selected time zone.  When off, events will display according to the time zone of your current location unquote.  Anytime I hear current location - I think battery drain.  So turn that one on - again it was Time Zone Override.

Another new item under calendars is Alternate Calendars - You can now also select from Chinese, Hebrew and Islamic calendars.

And finally under calendars there are toggles for Week Numbers and also Show invitee declines.  The latter is on by default the former is not.

Those were the major and noticeable changes in the Settings app from Notifications down to Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

I will go over more sections on future episodes.

    http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/5/wwdc14-wrapup-stunning-

    display-innovation

From the Google+ community - Tony Law asked quote Did anyone noticed that during the HomeKit portion of today's keynote, there is no listing of Nest on the vendor slide for home automation devices? unquote

Hmmmm - Sell out to Google for $3.2 Billion and apple is not happy - Or just possible - Apple said we are not going to talk with Nest prior to announcing this - and now it is public they will talk to them - just because they did not want to give Android any heads up on this.

Per some features others are talking about.  HOMEkit is a big one.

And Homekit is pretty much what people rumored it would be prior to WWDC.  It is a way to easily connect and control devices around your home from Smart locks, lights, cameras, garage doors, plugs, switches and thermostats not called nest,  It will all work with siri - so you can say Siri I am cold turn up the thermostat.  Or Siri I am hot make it colder.  Or Siri I just stepped in something please turn on the lights and Siri unlock the back door I have pug that is going to sleep outside tonight.

Some of the 3rd party manufacturers shown on the slide that Apple is working with and will have products that work with Homekit are - iDevices, iHome, Cree, Chamberlain, Skybell, Honeywell, Schlage, Philips, Kwikset, Netatmo, Haier, August, TI, Marvell, Sylvania, Broadcom and Withings - Yup - 17 3rd parties mentioned and Nest was not one of them.

I am sure there will be more than a few Kickstarter projects to come that will work with HomeKit as well.

    http://gizmodo.com/ios-8-the-best-hidden-features-that-

    apple-didnt-show-y-1586023628

Gizmodo had a post titled iOS 8 - the best hidden features that Apple didn't show you.  Some of the ones they listed are:

Swipe to dismiss Notifications - The Notification center gets an upgrade in iOS 8 going from 3 tabs to two tabs - Today and notifications.  Yes - it is an upgrade.  You can quickly customize widgets and you can dismiss a notification with a simple swipe - so no need to accurately hit that smallish x.

Another item they mentioned - is a Smarter, safer Safari - And that is because of the addition of DuckDuckGo - as an option for your search engine of choice.  And there is a new list of your most frequently visited sites.

Fine-Tunes Camera controls are another item - you can now tap to focus when taking a picture and there is a little slider you can slide up and down to change the exposure.  no more tapping all over the place on dark or light areas to get it to hopefully change to the exposure level you want.

And the one I really like - is the improvements to the weather app - it now looks out 9 days ahead - and shows hourly weather for the next 24 hours.   On top of that it pulls the weather info from The Weather Channel - hopefully making it more accurate. So nice additions there.

And finally they mentioned - Location-based lock screen notifications - Quote We were so amazed when we first saw this on MacRumors, we had to go check it out for ourselves. Sure enough, Apple has built elegant notifications right into the lock screen. Just walk into (or by) a Starbucks and a tiny icon will appear opposite the camera shortcut. Pull up and you'll be magically transported into the app and ready to make a purchase. unquote

    http://www.redmondpie.com/swiftkey-swype-and-fleksy-third-party-

    keyboards-confirmed-for-ios-8/

I think one of the bigger announcements from WWDC with regards to iOS 8 - and this is one that a lot of people are saying finally more than Yeah - is the announcement of 3rd party keyboard support.  This is something already supported on Android - and on the android platform the three biggest 3rd party keyboard folks are - Swiftkey, Swype and fleksy.   With swiftkey previously launching their own app called Swiftkey note - that we mentioned previously on this show - back earlier in the year.

There is going to be a lot more about this in the future.  But let me know from those of you that came over from Android or are living in both worlds - which of the three keyboards are you most excited to get on the iOS side?

    apple-adds-credit-card-scanning-feature-to-safari-in-ios-8

Thanks to Michael for this next one which is Another new feature with iOS 8.  And said new feature is that when in Safari and you go to a website looking for credit card info - and you tap in one of the fields for the credit card - at the top of the keyboard is a new option - Scan Credit Card - and it does what you kind of expect it to - it turns on the camera on your iOS device and allows you to scan your credit card and then enters the info automatically in the fields.  I tried this with a few different credit cards - and some it did great getting my name and credit card number correct - others just the credit card number was correct and the name was not.  Mind you it is only beta - and it did not populate the expiration date - which would have been nice - maybe that will be added in an upcoming beta.

It is smart - and did not take the number off my debit card.  Just from Credit cards.

    1269398?piddl_msgid=221154#msg_221154

Not sure if this next one goes under the category of Not quite or just plain - Ummm No.

An article in InformationWeek said the following:

    Quote

Apple switches default search tool in latest OS X and iOS versions to Microsoft Bing.

    Unquote

Ummm No - yeah - that seems like the right category.  As I mentioned My iPad 3rd gen was wiped clean and then upgraded to iOS 8 beta 1 - and it is still using Google for safari search as default.   Yes in the past Apple switched to Bing search on iOS for Siri - but that is old news - and this article made it sound like in Safari the default search engine would be Bing - and that is not the case - at least not yet.

    http://www.latimes.com/business/technology/la-fi-tn-

    apple-icloud-pricing-compares-rivals-20140603-story.html

Thanks to Dr. John for this next one which is a comparison to the new iCloud pricing vs the competition.

And this is an article in the LA Times - that really would have been helped with a quick matrix chart.

    But let me summarize -

For a Free offering from the different services.

    Dropbox - 2GB free

    iCloud, gets you 5GB free.

Microsoft OneDrive - 7 GB free

    Box.com - 10 GB free

and Google Drive - 15 GB free

So Google Drive wins on the free front.

    For the paid options.

DropBox - $9.99 per month for 100 GB

Microsoft OneDrive - $8.34 per month for 200 GB

    Box.com - $5 per month for 100 GB

Google Drive -  $1.99 per month for 100 GB

iCloud you pay $3.99 per month for 200 GB of storage.

So the new iCloud wins there.  By the way the old iCloud was $8.34 a month for just 50GB.  So 4 times the storage at less than 1/2 the price.

So in summary - if you don't want to spend anything - Google Drive is the way to go - but if you need more than 15 GB - then the new iCloud is the best option.

    http://appadvice.com/appnn/2014/06/hidden-ios-8-settings-

    reveal-control-center-and-lock-screen-customization-options

Thanks to Tash for this next one - which is an article on Appadvice.com - that is titled Hidden iOS 8 Settings Reveal Control Center And Lock Screen Customization Options - these are hidden in the code - and not available yet to the beta users.  In the internal builds of iOS 8 - you can add/remove and reorder control center toggles and the are even scrollable - wrote the Dev Hamaz Sood on twitter.

And he even showed a screen shot about Global plugin properties - leading him to wonder if lock screen extensions are in the future for iOS 8.  Note these are hidden features - and we have seen things come and go in the past - so it might just be Apples devs testing things out - and we might not see these until iOS 8.1 or iOS 9 or maybe never.  But if we cross our fingers and all wish together maybe we will get it for iOS 8.0

Completely unrelated - but I know now when the Next iPhone will launch - will be Friday September 26th.  I know this for certain - because I just purchased tickets for a flight to LA on Friday the 26th.  Back when the iPhone 4 launched - I had tickets for a flight to Las Vegas when I played in the WSOP.  This time it is for Podfest.  But it seems when I travel - new iOS or iPhone or iOS devices are launched - so - now that I have my tickets purchased - I am pretty certain September 26th it will be.  But I actually booked the ticket for a 12:00 PM flight that day - giving me enough time to wait on line if need be - get my new iPhone 6 and still get the airport with time to spare and by spare I mean with like 30 minutes to spare - can you say check bags only.

    Hi Rob,

Heard your latest WWDC podcast where you welcome the new draft in IOS8 for email. The process you described copying to notepad etc. is not necessary. If you need some info from another mail or app, you can cancel the mail you are working on, then "Save Draft"

get the info you need, then return to the mail app, tap and hold the create new mail icon, Your drafts will then appear , select the mail you were working on and paste the info you were looking for.

Much easier then the workflow you suggested....

The new swipe down is a bit more comfortable, but just slightly.

My favorite for iOS8 is the cross device pickup of phone and read messages/sms.

    Regards,

    Wilco O

    Dear Rob,

iOS 8 has all I wanted!!!

I think I'll be trying beta 1 on my iPad mini. I'll wait for beta 3 for my iPhone 4S. I am in an upgrade year so I'll be getting iPhone 6 if they add everything we asked for also.

    Regards,

    Kevin

    Hi Rob

Here are 2 pics from the keynote that reveal the new devices!

    name redacted.

Actually I get this email after every WWDC - as it seems Apple uses the same faux phone for showing in their keynote presentations - it is the same one they have use the past few years.  Nope Apple is not slipping up and revealing anything about future iPhone designs - they just settled on a simple sleek faux phone outline to wrap around their iOS screen shots.

We are now well over 800 members in our Google+ community and growing.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One post in the G+ community this past week came from -

Per the WWDC announcements and Google+ David Finch said the following quote Lots for us devs to get our heads round this week. I think Swift might sink or swim... If the binaries can run on iOS 7 then fine, but iOS 8 is iPhone 4S and up, so I won't touch Swift yet if it rules out iPhone 4 users. Also, no mention of any automation in migrating Objective C code to Swift - looks more likely that Objective C code will coexist. Interesting that iCloud API now hosts the server side code though... Looking forward to that session this week to find out the details.  …   unquote

Well David - what is the verdict from the seminars?

From David - quote - Swift apps can be deployed to iOS 7 and 8, and Mavericks and Yosemite... Glad about that. Good work Apple! unquote

And from Emiko Freund quote Pebble firmware 2.2 is out. So far, so good. Right top and bottom buttons becomes volume up and down by long pressing the middle button in music app, and now you can change the order of menu again with long pressing the middle button. unquote

Thanks Emiko for that heads up.

This past week there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Folks Go to today in iOS dot com slash community to join in.

Apple has some really good deals right now on Refurbished iPad minis'  $379 gets you a 64 GB version - $150 off retail.

$319 will get you a 16 GB Wifi and Celluar iPad mini - which is $110 off retail.

Remember with Refurbished iPad's - Apple puts in a new battery and a new case - so it really is like new.

Apple had recently a 16 GB iPad mini for as low as $219 - but that is gone now.

The refurbished store is always a nice way to get a discount - especially for devs that are looking for additional devices for testing.

Speaking of Apple ware and discounts - Thanks to Penny for the heads on this next one - Best Buy at least on line - and it may be at stores - not sure - but at least on line - Best buy is offering up a $25 iTunes gift card with the purchase of an Apple TV - and you also get free shipping.

I am still bummed there was not new Apple TV announced at WWDC.  We are many many months over due for a new Apple TV.

Not sure if this is an inventory clearing exercise or just a random special deal - Link in the show notes to the page on Best Buy for this offer - which does not say how long it will last.  Personally I would recommend waiting for the next Apple TV - but I thought it was coming in March and before that in the fall - so who knows when the next apple TV will come - certainly not me.

Ok - Lets talk rumors - and this first one comes from the site Nikkei - Titled - Apple flexes healthcare muscles with new wearable device.

They are saying Apples iWatch so to speak will be very geared towards a wearers biometric info - working with the newly announced Healthkit app and it is expected to hit the market in October.  Quote -  It will likely use a curved organic light-emitting diode (OLED) touchscreen and collect health-related data, such as calorie consumption, sleep activity, blood glucose and blood oxygen levels. It will also allow users to read messages sent by smartphones. unquote

Nekkie and those great un-named sources claim Apple plans on monthly output of 3-5 million units.  It seems all this is based on mystery sources and speculation - with a heavy dose of the latter.

my heart has been broken with regards to the mythical iWatch so many times now - I think I am becoming numb to some of these quote reports unquote.

Of course others are not so numb and enthusiastically jumped on the reporting bandwagon including Recode.net - that is the All things D folks new site - and well there were hundreds of other posts out there all siting back to the post from Nekkei.

On Weibo, Taiwanese singer/actor/race driver Jimmy Lin posted photos of him holding the new iPhone 6 or so he say.  From his pictures and others around the web - it sure does seem like the next iPhone will be with a single flash - wonder if Apple figured out how to do the true-tone flash with a single LED.  This is also supposedly a 4.7 inch iPhone - this one shows the power button on the right side - moved down from the top of the iPhone.

Thanks to Dr. John for this next one - which definitely is still in the rumor section - and that is Per NPR that Apple is looking at dishing the standard 3.5 MM headphone connector - and instead have headphones plug directly into their lightening port.  So new iPhones at some point in the future - possibly even with the iPhone 6 - would just have the lightening port at the bottom - and no headphone port.  Which well none of the quote leaked unquote iPhone 6 photos indicate - they all show the headphone port right where you would expect it to be.

So all this talk about removing the headphone Jacks well that is kind of crazy speak - to do something like that Apple would need to have considerable cooperation from the largest manufacturer of headphones.  Oh Wait - Maybe Apple will go out and buy an headphone manufacturer.  No - that would be crazy speak.

Well that is one way to get people to invest in a new set of $300 headphones - change the connector and say there is some incredibly better acoustic response that only headphones that plug into the lightening connector can experience.  I mean after all if you are spending $300 on headphones - don't you really want the absolute best audio.

    http://www.tomsguide.com/us/iphone-lockscreen-

    bypass,news-18928.html

Another month another iOS 7 lock screen exploit.

This one is actually easy to reproduce.

First, two things needed before hand: In Settings —> Control Center, make sure "Access on Lock Screen" is on. Then call the targeted iPhone and hang up before it answers.

The first one a would be hacker would have not control over - if you do not have that set on - then you phone does not have this exploit.  The second would require the hacker knows the phone number.  Which actually is pretty easy to get if the hacker has another phone with caller ID - just activate siri and ask her to call that number.  And then you have the phones number - of course the phone would need to have siri active when locked - which iPhones do by default.

lets also assume most people have Control center turned on - which it is by default.  And for the second one lets say you know the number and want to do this as a parlor trick for friends.

So call their phone and hang up.

Next ask them to open an app - the message app is a good one to go with - as that can have some personal info most would not want to get out.

Then with the app active have them lock down the lock screen.

Next tap the home button - and swipe up from the bottom to bring up Control center - and tap to put the phone into Airplane mode.

Then swipe down to close control center and swipe down from the top of the screen to expose the notification screen

Then find the missed call and tap on it.

And viola - it displays the open app - and personal messages if you had the messages app.  Yeah - pretty easy exploit to reproduce.

If no app was active - and all were minimized - then the exploit does not work.  It only works if an app was active when the person tapped the power button to lock it or it just auto locked.

    Dear Rob,

I wanted to share with you why swift is huge for iOS. A development language that is focused on productivity makes it so the developer can focus more on providing new features that would be nice to have or concepts that haven't been made yet. I myself have been driven away from native development because Apple's old language was a lot more work to get even simple features thrown into the application. I've already started studying swift and know for fact that a lot of doors are now able to be opened because it's not going to take that long to develop complex features. Swift will definitely bring more fully featured applications that run far more reliably than ever before.

    Regards,

    Cody

    Hi Rob,

Earlier this year Tim Cook said that Apple would soon be releasing new stuff that "any reasonable person" would consider a new product category. I remember reading blogs at the time that speculated that maybe he was going to try to pass off a larger iPhone as a new category.

I'm sure Apple has other things up their sleeve, but I now wonder if he may have been referring to Swift, also Health Kit and Home Kit.

    What are your thoughts?

    Regards,

    Preston

Hi Preston - I am not sure I qualify as a reasonable person - but I would say Swift definitely is not a new product - in the sense of a product - it is a new language but at the end of the day it is a new tool for devs - and not something directly for end users - and I think it has to be something for endusers to be considered a new product - if you are a reasonable person that is.

    Hey Rob,

Love the show. I was wondering what your opinion is on the headphones for the iPhone 6 possibly having Beats technology. Do you think the new headphones will include it? Or do you think they will be kept separate? I'm kind of hoping for some new headphones. I have an iPhone 4S and am looking forward to this upgrade. I have yet to try the iPhone 5 earbuds but have heard good things. Either way I'm excited to get some new buds.

    Regards,

    Dey

I think at some point - Yes - Apple will integrate Beats offering with the iPhones - but definitely not iPhone 6 - just not enough time.  There is a lot of learning and cross cultural stuff that needs to take place first.  But in the future the iPhone 6S or 7 will likely have some Beats tech with it.

    Hi Rob,

Just wondering about the new hotspot feature where your Mac will connect with your phone and use its data for internet connectivity.

I have the old grandfather plan that will not allow you to use your phone as a hotspot like those that have the newer family share plan.

Is AT&T going to allow this to occur or do they not even have control over it in iOS 8.  Quite frankly the hotspot jailbreak apps are really the primary reason I ever jailbroke in the first place.

    Regards,

    Don from Guntersville, AL.

From all I have read on this - if you like me have the unlimited plan from AT&T - we will not be able to use the hotspot feature and keep the grandfathers plan.  If we want tethering we will need to give up the

    Hi Rob

at wwdc they announced a dark mode for mac OSX yosemite.

Before the announcement, one of the three features I wanted on iOS 8 was dark mode!

    Well, lets break it down.

in 2013, they had quick reply for mac.

now in 2014 they have quick reply for iOS.

    2014: dark mode for osx

    2015: dark mode for iOS?

whats your take on this? would you like a dark mode?

    Thanks!

    Usama

Thanks for the email and for pointing out that trend - yeah - that might be a feature that makes it to iOS 9.

    Hi Rob,

My name is Ton, and I've been a fan of your show since I discovered it around 2010.

I've recently developed a Kickstarter project with a group of close friends that I'd love for you to share with the Tii listeners. We looked around and saw how the premium headphone game has been going strong for the last few years. With the recent official news of Apple's acquisition of Beats, Apple will be pushing premium headphones by Beats. Also with the rumored increase in size of the iPhone, audiophiles will literally have their hands full, not to mention pockets. We decided to launch DELOOP on Kickstarter. DELOOP is the world’s first premium headphone bag built to protect virtually any pair of headphones while simultaneously carrying your mobile devices, personal belongings, and today's relevant digital media - all in one stylish compact design. For more information,  please visit our Kickstarter page by searching for deloop at kickestarter.com - that is D E L O O P

    Regards,

    Ton Choi

Well Ton - thanks for the email.  This Kickstarter project has until Jun 26th at 10:02 AM CT to get funded - currently they are over 12,000 dollars towards their goal of $20,000

Pricing for the DELOOP - is $68 dollars - while this level lasts - then it goes to $78.  Estimated delivery is October 2014.  And if they are late and you order it - I will give you Ton's email - Just kidding - kinda.

So if you are thinking some beats headphones are in your christmas future - or birthday future or you already have a pair of Beats or Bose or some other over the head and over the ears type headphones - go to kickstarter and search for deloop - d e l o o p

Seems Apple opened up its checkbook and wrote another check for a mapping company.  Tech crunch is reporting that Apple is acquiring the App spot setter - which is a social search engine for places.

Their technology quote involves layering social data on top of a maps interface - could be used to beef up Apple Maps with features competitor Google Lacks unquote

According to Techcrunch - the two founders of the company are ex-google maps engineer Stephen Tse - and Johnny Lee - whose linked in profiles now point to their move to Apple - which you know is a good sign it actually happened.

Another good sign this really happened is that the App was pulled from both the iOS and Android stores.  If anyone used this app - give us a call or send us an email and let us know what your thoughts of it are or were.

    Hi rob,

I’m a devoted TII listener ever since I discovered your podcast roughly around episode 190 or so and have asked for your advice and opinions previously.

My reason for writing today is regarding the Family Sharing feature mentioned for iOS 8. I Just recently bought an iPhone 5 32 gb to use on Ting and want to give my wife my old but perfectly good and in excellent condition 4S. She’s been using an old LG Android phone and can’t wait to get rid of it.

When I first heard of the new Family sharing plan, I thought it was a great idea and figured that this would be what we would do going forward as she already has an iPad Air registered under my account, but the more I thought about it, I’m no longer so sure it would really be worth it or even matter. I also read the other day on one of the Apple-centric sites that certain in-app purchases won’t be shareable (is that a word?) even with the new Family Sharing set up.

In your opinion, for a circumstance such as this where it is only going to be a couple of people under this new sharing plan is it even worth it? My wife does have an Apple ID, but other than buying some music through it maybe six or seven years ago, she only uses it now to be signed into Facetime and iMessages on the iPad and eventually the 4S once I get it set up for her. Currently, when I back up the devices via the computer, I do so under each other’s name. My iPhone, her iPad, etc. I have already bought quite a bit of apps with in-app purchases so she doesn’t even bother looking to buy anything under her account. It’s not like we’re secretive with what we buy where I don’t want her to see what I buy and vice versa either. We are each signed into our own Kindle, Dropbox, Google Drive Facebook services on our own devices as well.

I would assume that she could use the phone the same way she’s been using the iPad with being signed into my overall account, but use her own ID for the other individualized services mentioned above. Neither one of us uses iCloud. So that’s not really a concern.

I was also planning on getting my mother a Mini and am of the same mind with the ID set up.

Anyway, the more I think about it, the more I’m inclined to continue with this set up and thought I would ask if you had any opinions in favor or against it.

    Regards,

    Cris

    Hi Rob

I would like to know if there is an app that will allow you to record gameplay on your iOS device? I have heard of software called Reflector where you download it on your mac or PC and then use airplay to stream what you are doing from your device to your mac or PC, but I would like to know if there is an app you or your listeners could recommend so I don't have to go down this route and it is all recorded right on your iOS device? I have heard of an app called Display Recorder for jailbreakers, but I am looking for one that doesn't require jailbreaking. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Regards

    Steve

    Brisbane

Hi Steve - I have display recorder - on my non-jailbroken iOS device there was a short window when it was available in the app store - sadly - iOS 7 broke it on the non-jailbroken side - and the only way I know of recording what is going on on your iOS device directly on your iOS device is to jailbreak and use the updated version of Display recorder which does support iOS 7.  Sorry. But if anyone else has any suggestions for Steve - please give us a call 206-666-6364 or email us today in iOS at gmail dot com.

Thanks to Chris in London for the heads up on this next one - which is from 9to5 mac and titled -

Cydia gets updated with better repository and package management, iOS 7-style icon, other fixes .

So the next time you open Cydia you should be asked to upgrade.  Nice to see them do an upgrade and get it a little more polished looking.

Cydia always kind of looked very iOS 3.0 - which clashed pretty hard with iOS 7.

There is more info on this upgrade in the aforementioned post.  Including a note about improved authentication during checkout of purchasing an App or tweak.

    Hi Rob,

In Episode 309, two-step verification was discussed. My daytime (and usually nighttime) job is running a mobile security software and solutions company. This is a white paper we typically give out to our enterprise customers to explain the differences between two-step, two-factor and multi-factor authentication. Hope you find it helpful, all feedback on it appreciated.

Larry - thanks for the heads up on this - and any IT folks out there this is a nice Whitepaper to have to explain Apples Two Step Verification process versus others out there. Make sure you right click on the link and choose open in a new window if using safari. And if you go back to Ep 309 in the show notes you will see the link to Apples FAQ about Two Step Verification.

Hi Sal - I know from time to time with time to time in quotes - that I mispronounce a word or two or ten.  Like malware.  But in the case of GIF - to say it should be jif like the peanut butter because that is how Gin is pronounced - overlooks a few other examples - and that would mean we should say it is jive instead of Give or Jirl instead of Girl and Jod instead of God and well you get the idea.  So I am sticking with GIF - no matter how much flack you want to jive me over it.

    Hi Rob,

Just wanted to give YOU and the listeners a "heads up" on Freedompop Customer Service. Everything will go alongsmoothly & quickly as long as you're buying or upgrading your account. I'm speaking specifically about Free data for Tablets. It will take about 10 days to get your Photon or other device if you're lucky.

HOWEVER, please make it clear to  your listeners that IF you need to downgrade your account (such as return to all free data) FP will put you on eternal HOLD, hoping you will just give up. It is a rude but, effective strategy to maintain business. Sales, Tech Support & Customer Support have all be trained to do this by saying "OK, just a moment while I connect you to our Downgrade department". You may NEVER get a real human being to talk with. I don't know the answer but, sure would like you to WARN others. I only wanted to downgrade until I am able to actually USE freedompop consistently. VERY frustrating!

    Regards,

    Rob M

Hi Rob - thanks for that heads up.  Folks remember - if you need to downgrade and you get put into the downgrade hold chasm - what you can do often times is hit 0 then if it asks you a question - talk gibberish - that often times confuses voicemail systems - and they are set up to transfer anyone it does not understand to a live body.  Tell them no one is picking up and you are calling your credit card to cancel the billing if they transfer you to downgrade oblivion again.

    QUOTE FROM ALICE

Today's episode is one of those I am recording in two parts - the first part if all Pre WWDC - and it is being recorded Sunday Night.  Then there will be the second part of the show which will be all about WWDC and recorded as soon as WWDC ends - so I can get out this episode as quick as possible.  First part is Non-WWDC news and listeners feedback - then later in the episode we will get into WWDC news.  To me there are TWO REALY big announcements each year - the first is the one where Apple Intros the latest Gen iPhone or now iPhones.  And the 2nd which to me is actually the biggest announcement is WWDC keynote when Apple intros the next Gen version of iOS - that to me is more important because it will impact well over 90% of you listening - where as the new iPhone will impact at best 50% of you listening each year.  So I am excited for the WWDC event and what it means - but first lets get to the non WWDC news and listener feedback.

    http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/may/28/iphone-ipad-ransom-

    attack-icloud-hack-apple

To start a quick follow up to Last weeks lead story about iOS devices being held for ransom - Apple has commented on this - actually they did so right after the last episode went up - and it does appear the users were the victims of a phishing attack.

Apple said the following quote  “Apple takes security very seriously and iCloud was not compromised during this incident. Impacted users should change their Apple ID password as soon as possible and avoid using the same user name and password for multiple services. Any users who need additional help can contact AppleCare or visit their local Apple Retail Store." unquote

So again iCloud was not compromised / hacked - just certain users logged into a service they thought was iTunes and entered their user name and password willingly.   What is funny / sad - is recently a listener Bob B wrote in warning about an email Phishing scam - that email was read back on Ep 307 - In that episode we read the following:

    Hi Rob.

You might want to alert your listeners to this.

You might get an email asking to update your iTunes account.  Don't do it, it's a scam.  Look at the senders name.  It is iTnues, not iTunes.

    Bob B

    Hamilton, Ontario

So probably this is the same attack that was used to get those passwords from those that had their phones held ransom.   My advice to stay safe is both activate two-step verification and also listen to this show and listen to the warnings coming from fellow listeners of the show.  Thanks Bob B for that heads up again - maybe some of you out there listened and because of that Bob saved you a major head ache.

A few episodes back we talked about Apple buying Beats - and well at the time we talked as if it was basically a done deal - And well now it is officially a done deal.  Really no shocker here - I mean Dr Dre was in a Facebook video calling himself the first hip-hop billionaire.  The shocker would have been if it was not true.  but it is true and With the acquisition both Dr. Dre and Jimmy Lovine will join Apple.  The actual sales price was not the reported 3.2 Billion - but "just" 3.0 Billion - It is possible that Facebook Video was a 200 Million mistake by Dr. Dre.

Tim Cook had the following to say quote “Music is such an important part of all of our lives and holds a special place within our hearts at Apple, That’s why we have kept investing in music and are bringing together these extraordinary teams so we can continue to create the most innovative music products and services in the world.” unquote

So there is it - put a bow on it is a done deal - that will finalize in Apples Fiscal 4th quarter which is calendar 3rd quarter for the rest of us.

Congrats Dr. Dre and Jimmy Lovine - it will be interesting to see how this plays out and what if anything Tim Cook says about this at WWDC - maybe we will mention this again later in the episode.

    entire-ipad-lineup-in-education-discounts/

For those of you in school or teaching or that have access to someone that is and can get that sweet Educational discount from Apple - Good news.  Apple has now included the entire iPad lineup in the Education discounts it offers.

iPad Mini wifi - non-retina is just $279.  iPad Mini wifi with Retina is $379.  iPad Air is $469 at the low end.  Essentially for the iPad Line up - it is a $20 discount for everything except the iPad Air line up which is a $30 discount.

It is not a lot but it is better than nothing.  So next time you think of buying an iPad - ask yourself who do you know that is in school that I can use for the discount.  Interesting Apple intro'd this discount less than a week before WWDC - wonder is they plan some educational announcement at WWDC - will find out later in the show possibly.

    Hi Rob,

I can't stand how the i (info) button on Apples podcasts app links to the web. I can't scroll down to see what all your show is going to be about without hitting links that open up to web pages. Is this you or the Apple podcast doing this?

Great show and info, as always!

    Regards,

    Valerie

Hi Valerie - Well it is I guess a combo of the two.  But I look at it as a feature of the new podcasts app - where it now hot links to the links in your show notes / description from your RSS feed.  Which is a nice addition.  It also hot links to the call in number - which you will see in the show notes too.  My only suggestion be careful what you tap on - but I do really like this new feature in the Podcasts app - and to fellow podcasters make sure you put your call in number at the top of your episode descriptions now. Which is something I just went over in greater detail in Episode 22 of Libsyn's the feed podcast - that I co-host with Elsie.  All podcasters should be listening to that show - we give out really good tips for podcasters on optimizing for iTunes and Stitcher - it is not just about libsyn - actually most of it is about podcasting in general - not libsyn in specific.  Search for libsyn - l i b s y n - in iTunes if you are a podcaster or thinking of becoming a podcaster.

    Hi Rob

I heard in the last show that you can now use Siri to rewind and fast forward podcasts you are listening to a certain amount of time. There doesn't appear to be a way to do the same with music in the music app, but it does work with audiobooks. however You can use Siri to make a song go back to the beginning by simply saying "restart song".

Per the last episode and my inquires about apps to make an animated gif out of Burst mode photos - Via the Google+ community and a post from Emiko

quote I Found an app to make animated GIF from iPhone burst shots. Before opening the app you have to mark pictures in the burst shot by tapping 'Choose favorites'

And from the responses to that post - Javier recommended the app

    Echograph by Vimeo

and Kie recommend the jailbreak app - Giffy.

    Thanks all for those recommendations.

Hi rob, on the last episode of tii, you mentioned wanting an app that can make a gif out of a burst of photos. I have the Snappycam app that does this and much much more. It's amazing but no longer on the App Store as Apple bought the app. Not very useful but I thought I would let you know.

    Regards,

Hmmm - wonder if any of those features wind up in iOS 8 - will see later in the show - maybe.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One post in the G+ community this past week came from -  Ryan Boyle - and he found what was the best Photo Shop picture of the week. To give some background - Photos from inside the Mascone center where WWDC is being held were leaked over the weekend and one was a banner with water in the background and a big 8 centered up on the banner - obviously in reference to iOS 8.  Well that banner was photo shopped and the 8 was removed and in its place were the words - Seoul start your photocopiers.   Classic - Again fake - but it could just as well been real - as you know that is what Sammy will be doing and what Apple knows they will be doing.   Thanks Ryan for that find it made me laugh - still making me laugh.

This past week there were also dozens and dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

    6-revealed.html

The iPhone 6 - is pretty much what everyone is expecting Apple to call the next Gen iPhone - so much so Apple almost has to since calling it anything else would be so darn confusing.  Remember however the next Gen iPhone - will be the 8th Generation of the iPhone and the 9th Version of the iPhone.   The 5S was the 7th gen iPhone and the 5C - was really a 6th gen device but the 8th version of the iPhone.  So yeah to cut down on confusion and because everyday people are already calling it the iPhone 6 - apple needs to call it that but they also likely need to have multiple versions.  4" and 4.7" versions.

Ok that all said - there have been basically no pictures of a 4" iPhone 6 - and most leaked pics to date of an iPhone 6 show it as basically 4.7".   And yes more and more pics are leaking - another one was leaked on the australian blog  MacFixit.  One thing that seems to be consistent in the photos leaked so far - not one of them shows the two-tone LED flash that the iPhone 5S sports - so it likely means Apple figured out how to do that with a single LED rather than having to have two.  I just can not believe Apple would  remove a feature - especially one as well reviewed as the two tone flash.  Of course it could just mean all the photos to date are fakes.

Another rumor is that Apple will release the 4.7  in version in August and the 5.5 inch version a month later.  I am not buying the August launch rumor - but I could buy the launch the 5.5 in version a month later - with the 4.7 inch and 4 inch versions launching in September and the 5.5 Inch version launching in October.

We shall see when we see.

Thanks to Dr. John for this next one - which is a report from Chitika that heading into WWDC - almost 90% of iPhone users were running iOS 7 or greater.  89.7% to be precise.  This based on millions of mobile impressions from iOS device from the US and Canada between May 22nd and 28th.  iPad users were running at 84.8% running iOS 7 or greater.  This almost ubiquitous adoption of the latest version of iOS by 90% of iPhone owners is just "slightly" higher than the 8.5% adoption of kitkat by Android owners.  Yeah - fun times developing for Android - just saying.

    Hi Rob,

First let me just say I have been a Tii listener for a long time and haven't missed a single show.  I was writing you to see if I could get a shout out for my podcast. I am doing a gaming podcast that is geared toward iPad gaming only. I play games on my iPad more than I do a regular console. So with that I believe that people need a podcast that gives the iPad the respect of being just has good if not better than some gaming consoles. My podcast if called BSMGcast (Big Screen Mobile Gaming Podcast). Thank you for your time and great work!

For those of you like me that funded the SOS Charger - good news - looks like the devices are literally getting ready to get on a slow boat from china. Lets just hope they are not put in a cargo container that falls over board on the transit to the US.  Oh wait knock on wood that is.  This is one I have waited for a long time for - and it is nice to think we might finally be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel of this project.

Thanks to Michael for the heads up on this next one - which is the Kickstarter project iFind - which yes is yet another Locating tag on Kickstarter.  But and this is a big Butt.  He he he - This is quote Powered by our patent pending technologies, iFind is the world's first Bluetooth item locator that requires no battery. unquote.

You heard that right they are claiming their location tag requires no batteries as in zip - nadda - nothing - no batteries for you.  Put your tag on in your purse or wallet and forget about it - well until you need to find it that is.

They had a goal of $25k - that have reach 10 times that amount - and have until Jun 30th 2014 at 9:14 AM CT to finish up funding.

Pricing on this is $16 dollars well for the next 463 backers that is.  Then it goes to $18 dollars.  That is for one tag.

$30 gets you two and $70 gets you five.  Or pledge $120 and get 10.

They are about the size of a quarter.

Per how it works - they claim it recycles electromagnetic energy and stores it in a unique power bank.  It has a 200 ft - 60 Meter detection range and loud alarm.

Will be interesting to see if this one works as advertised.  To be honest the fact that tags previously did require batteries is a big reason I was not a fan of tags.  But this one has me rather interested.  I am almost willing to plunk down $30 to get two just to see if this is as good as advertised.

Search for iFind at kickstarter dot com - or in the show notes for ep 310.

    Hi Rob,

    Hope you're doing well.

Just wanted to let you know that my new book, iOS Access for All was released yesterday. The book covers all aspects of accessibility in iOS. I've published it as an ePub, and am selling it through my Web site. You can view the table of contents there, as well as a sample chapter.

Shelly is her self sight impaired and a long time tech writer and Apple geek - really I could not think of anyone better than Shelly to write a book like this.  Search for iOS Access for All by Shelly Brisbin in the show notes for Ep 310 over at today in iOS Dot com.  Note this is not in iTunes as an eBook yet - you do need to go to Shelly's site for this - so look for that link in the show notes or just go to iOS access book dot com

    QUOTE FROM ALICE

    Hi Rob,

I just returned from a week long trip to Moab, Utah, visiting, Canyonlands and the Arches National Parks with friends.  We all took our own pics and now would like to share with each other.  Most of us are IOS based, but a couple have other devices.  Is there a way we can all both upload and download to one place.  Simple is good, as at least one person is very technology challenged.

    Thank you in advance,

    Regards,

    Cathy

Hi Cathy - I am throwing this one out to the audience - if anyone has any suggestions for Cathy - give us a call - 206-666-6364 - that's 206-moon-dog or send an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com.

    Hi Rob,

Whoever decided to say mobile browsers would not have extensions because they're underpowered really didn't know what they were talking about. To prove this, I present to the Tii audience fully functional Mobile bookmarklets designed to enhance the already great browsing experience on iOS devices.

The bookmarklet I believe will help most people is called NightMode. This bookmarklet allows users to change the color scheme of web pages into something that is gentle on the eyes during night time reading. This, unlike inverse colors, darkens the entire page and dims the images for seamless and comfortable reading at night.

    Link to NightMode:

    Link for other bookmarklets:

Thanks cody for the heads up on your Web Apps.  Folks if you would like to check these out - do so via mobile safari on your iOS device - look for the links in the shows notes.  One for NightMode and then another with links to multiple other Webapps / bookmarklets from Cody.

    Hi Rob,

I have a jailbroken iPad running iOS 7.0, however I would like to download an app that requires iOS 7.1.  Are there any tweaks/workaround to allow me to do this?  I tried searching on the internet but nothing seemed to work.

    Regards Max C

Hi Max - Yup I am throwing this one out to the audience - if anyone has any suggestions for Max - give us a call - 206-666-6364 - that's 206-moon-dog or send an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com.

    Hey Rob,

Just got back from a trip where I used iBeacons to track my luggage. The app I used is "Travel Radar" by Aww Apps. The app allows you to enter the iBeacon information (UUID, Major, Minor), then after attaching the beacon to your luggage, it will give approximate distance, so no more guessing on the luggage carousel. If enabled, you can have the app send notifications to your lock screen of how far your luggage is. You can use the app to locate up to 2 iBeacons.

The physical iBeacon I used was the "RadBeacon Tag" by Radius Network. It required a little bit of set up, via the RadBeacon Config app, but once set up, it was ready to go. The Tag has a replaceable coin-cell battery that lasts from 1 month to 9 and a half months, depending on what transmission rate you set up.

For pricing (in USD), the Travel Radar app $1.99 on the App Store, the RadBeacon Tag is $39, with free shipping. Unfortunately, Radius Network is only selling them within the US at this point in time. The RadBeacon Config app is free on the App Store.

A final note, the night before my trip, I ran into an issue where either of the 2 apps could find the beacon but could not find a distance. I contacted RadBeacon, and they got back to me with the following:

    "Mark,

It sounds like you may be experiencing the effect of a bug in iOS CoreLocation API that prevents ranging from working correctly. Try resetting your phone by holding down the Wake/Sleep button and the Home button until the phone powers off. Once it restarts the problem should go away. Known bug, apple says they are working on a fix.

    David"

I followed the instructions, but also had to toggle Bluetooth off then back on again to get it to work. So just an FYI to your listeners who want to try this.

Love the show, keep up the great work, and bring on WWDC.

    Regards,

    Mark

    https://www.apple.com/apple-events/june-2014/

OK time to finally get to WWDC 2014 and what was announced at the Keynote.

Here is the play by play - the keynote started out at 12:00 PM CT - which makes it easy to play along at home.  at 12:00 PM CT it started out with..

A long ad / propaganda film about Apps and the importance of Apps and App developers.

Tim Cook then came out on stage and talked about it being the 25th anniversary.  2/3rd are first time attendees - lucky bunch.  Youngest Dev is 13 years old.  9 Million registered developers.  Up 47% from last year.  First up was OS Ten and the mac - That section ran from 12:10 pm to 12:45 PM   As normal I will not go over all or even most of what they said - except per the parts that relate to iOS and iOS devices - FYI OS Ten Ten will be called Yosemite it is going from Mavericks to Yosemite.  iCloud Drive is one item that will work with iOS devices.  Podcasters will be interested in Mail Drop - which lets you send huge files via iCloud. Up to 5GB in size. Think of it like YouSendit or WeTransfer built into Yosemite which again for podcasters co-hosting is a nice feature especially for double enders.

Apple talked about Continuity - which means more continuity between iOS devices and Macs.  First up - AIR DROP now works between iOS and the MAC - YEAH.  With Continuity your devices are aware of each proximity wise - If you are working on something on your iOS device as you walk up to your Mac - You can now continue working on it on your mac or vice versa.  Say you are typing an email on your iPhone as you walk up to your mac - you can now finish typing that email on your Mac and send it from the mac.  That is nice as you might be needing to get to the mac to add an attachment.

iMessage - now your iPhone will work as a relay to your mac - meaning you can get SMS texts on your mac - not just iMessages but SMS texts from those outside the iOS and Apple eco system.  And you can now get and accept phone calls on your mac - from your iPhone.  It links your iPhone with your mac. A call comes in on your phone and you are working on your mac - rather than have to dig around for your iPHone - you can answer the call and talk right on your mac.  So Yes your Mac Book Pro can now become a $2,000+ speaker phone.  Latter on the also mention this works the same way with iPads - so you can answer phone calls on your iPad as well.  and you can make calls from the Mac or iPad as well. So not just about answering them.

They did a test call from a mac to a new Apple Employee - Yup - Dr. Dre. It was a nice little tip of the Cap to their Beats acquisition - but that was the only time that came up in the presentation.

Per making calls from your mac - This is actually pretty cool for Podcasters - if you use my Skype recording setup at podcast411.com/mixer.pdf - you should be able to make and easily record calls with this feature.  Nice for interviews.

Yosemite Available to Devs today - This summer they will be doing a beta program for non-devs and full release in the Fall.

Next was iOS - Over 100 Million iPod Touch's sold, Over 200 Million iPads sold and over 500 Million iPhones sold for over 800 Mil devices sold. More importantly over 130 Million customer new to iOS in the last 12 months alone.  Many of these new customers were switchers from Android.  Which tim said they purchased by mistake but then were seeking a better life.

Overall satisfaction for iOS 7 at 97%.  Tim then mentioned the Chitika numbers I mentioned earlier.  Again essentially 90% using iOS 7 vs just about 9% using the latest version of Android.  Again which platform do you want to develop for.  And hey for those that give me grief for dogging Android - Tim Cook definitely did not pull any punches - talking about Android near dominance in the Malware marketplace.

Then Tim made the announcement of iOS 8 - shocker.  Craig Frederiki talked about iOS 8.

First new item is interactive notifications - Which means there is no need to leave an app to reply to a message.  If you get a text  you can right in the app at the top where you see the message come in pull down a little and reply to the text - all while keeping your main app open.  It also works on the lock screen and works with many notifications not just a text message - but  also from Facebook and again others.

Double tap now gets you access to recent people you contacted above the open apps.  This makes it easy if you want to call back or text your significant other or a co-worker you communicate with all the time.

In Safari on the iPad there is now an enhanced Tab view.

In Mail there were a few new additions slash improvements.

If you want to mark a message un read - just swipe to the right.  If you want to flag a message - pull to the left a little and the option to flag is there along with delete.  But if you swipe all the way to the left it will delete out the email.

But my favorite addition to Mail and maybe iOS 8 over all is you can now Swipe down an email you are creating and put it in essentially draft mode and then go and get access to other emails to copy something out of and then go back and paste that into the draft email and finish the email.  I can't count how many times I had to copy what I was working on - paste it to note app - then close the draft and search in another email from something - copy it from that email - and go and create a new email and paste that into the new email and go to the note app and copy what I previously typed and paste that over.  A real Pain in the back side.  Nice to see a real draft mode with the ability to search and go through other emails.

Next is the keyboard and what they are calling quicktype.  no reaction from audience on the announcement at all - crickets chirping.  Quick Type offers predictive suggestions - so as you type it will put a few different words right above the top of the keyboard you can tap on to use.  It is also going to give predictive answers.  The example they used was you get a text that says do you want to go for a dinner or a movie? It offers up three choices to tap on -  Dinner,   A movie  and not sure.

This is going to bring a whole new level of funny or just wrong predictive answers.   Can't wait to see some of the funny suggestions to text message questions.  Oh yeah - I guess it will save some time for you too - which I am guessing will be wasted by all the time we are going spend at the tumblr blogs looking at all those funny suggestions.

Per the predictive suggestions they are supposed to be based on you and who you are talking with.  It is supposed to learn about you and adapt to offer better and better suggestions - but all the learning is done on the device - not in the cloud or at the NSA.  Apple made the point of stating clearly - Privacy of your info is important and none of the keystrokes or info is being leaving the device.

Continuity was mentioned again - it is not just about iOS device to Mac - but also iOS device to iOS device - you can pick up on your iPad where you left off on your iPad and vice versa.

Messages - Apple mentioned it is the most frequently used app on iOS - and they added some new features.  In iOS 8 - for Group messaging you can name a thread.  You can add and remove people from the thread.  You can pick which thread on a per thread level which one to silence with Do not disturb or when to leave.  So if you are on a thread and a flame war breaks out between two people that you care nothing about - you silence it - and are not constantly bombarded with notifications of that thread.  Nice.

There are some location sharing and a tap to talk feature added as well - more on those in the future.

iCloud drive - lets you open and edit documents on a device with the changes saved back to the original document.  Ummm be careful what you edit and how you save is all I can say on that one.

Enterprise - 98% of fortune 500 use iOS devices.

Health - uses 3rd party apps and manage all your health activities.

family sharing - sharing photos and calendars and purchases of family members for media.  Up to six family members that share the same credit card.

Photos - Every photo available via iCloud to all devices.  Initially they did not talk about pricing - later on they tried to baloney sandwich it.  The First 5GB is free.  Then there is a per month fee for more storage.  $099 a month for 20 GB.  200 GB for $3.99 per month and tiers up to 1 TB.  More on this in the future.  But since this is for Photos and videos - for me alone I would be looking at at least 200 GB probably more.

New editing features in Photos app.  One is about managing lighting / exposures.

Now they had many other features they did not go over which included some of the following which were not talked about but flashed up on the screen

Time limits and countdown timer for guided access

Touch ID to exit from Guided Access

If I am right these two means you can set up your kids in say netflix - set their time limit and when up - you can get back control easily with your finger print.

    Shazam for siri

    FaceTime Call waiting

    Speak Screen

    Improved zoom for accessibility

    Alex voice for Accessibility

Braile Keyboard for direct 6 dot braile input

Multi-device support for MFi hearing aids

    In case of emergence card

    Camera Timer

    Battery usage by app

    Panoramic Photos on iPad

    Auto night mode in iBooks

    Purchase iTunes content with Siri

Private browsing per tab in safari

    iBooks built into iOS

    FaceTime Call waiting

    And more

They went back to tim at 1:22 PM - which means iOS got about 2 minutes more time than did OS Ten.  Tim Mentioned there were 1.2 Mil Apps available for iOS and that 300 Million people visit the app store each week.

The app store would be Adding trending searches - so you can see what people are searching for.  Yeah search optimizers are not going to abuse that info.

Apple will be Introducing App Bundles and App Preview videos into the App store.

The App preview videos will open a whole new business for those that create said videos - well it was a niche business already - but now it will boom.

And Apple will be introducing Test Flight for beta testing of the devs app.

They announced there are Over 4,000 new Developer API's for iOS 8.

To start with was Extensibility - Which Apple said quote With Extensibility application from the app store will be able to extend the system and offer services to other apps unquote.  Which got a big round of applause.

Essentially what Apple is doing is extending the sandboxing of apps - and an extension and app talk through an iOS service.  So Apple keeps security in place.

3rd party apps can define widgets for notifications.   (Get widget for Podcaster apps)

One key extension is being able to do 3rd party keyboards.  Swype keyboard can be an extension for apps.

Think of this as tweaks to apps - including Apples own core apps.

Touch ID API - Which means developers will be able to add touch ID as a way to unlock or open an app.  It does not give fingerprint data to the App - but rather the API allows for the verification of identity to unlock a keychain item. Essentially you could have an app with protected notes on an iOS device with touch ID - and you could lock the notes with your finger print - if it is one of the registered finger prints on the device - and then only that fingerprint could unlock it.  So if you have multiple people sharing a device - you could have security for your notes or photos.  Which could mean you could have pictures on your iOS device you don't want you kids to see of you and significant other - you know the type - the ones takin at night with where you are both dressed in your 80's outfits.  Yeah - think of the mental carnage on your kids seeing you in Parachute pants.  Well this type of app could save the kids from that carnage and they could not guess you passcode - only your finger print could unlock it.

Camera API's - Read and write to Photo library is now available.

HomeKit API - This is the oft rumored internet of things.  Where your iOS device could be securely paired with different devices around your house.  Even can add in siri integration - where you can say good night siri - and it checks to see all your doors are closed and closes down the garage door is open and locks doors that are unlocked - and turns off certain lights and maybe turns on others and even turns down your thermostat and turns off the coffee maker.  Or what ever other smart devices you have set up.

    Cloudkit - (look at bandwidth)

SpriteKit and SceneKit - for casual games.

New Programing language - Swift - which they basically explained as objective C with out the C.  Apple was very high on Swift - showing how it will supposedly be easier and quick to develop with it.  There is an iBook language guide now for Swift.  I would love to hear back from the Devs on your thoughts about Swift - is this something that will make it easier to develop for iOS devices?  What about porting of your apps - does this make it harder to do that?  Will be interesting to see how this plays out - the reaction in the crowd of Devs to Swift seemed pretty positive.  I am sure we will mention more about it in the future.

iOS 8 - beta available today for devs.  Available in the fall to all.  For the following devices.

    iPhone 4S and later.

    iPod Touch 5th Gen

    iPad 2 and later

    iPad mini's

I believe that means the iPhone 4 is the only device running iOS 7 that will be stuck at iOS 7.  Which sucks as my iPhone 4 was going to be my beta device for iOS 8 - now I guess it will be my iPad 3rd Gen.  I don't dare change my wifes iPad over to it yet.  But she was actually very happy to hear about draft mode for emails.  So maybe I get her iPad upgraded around the 4th beta.  I will probably upgrade my iPhone 5S around the 3rd beta depending on reports for the first two.  IF all is going well on the 2nd maybe for the second one - definitely not for the first beta.

Per What was not announced.  Well No new Apple hardware. Nothing - No iWatch - no new Apple TV - no new macs - Today's event was just about software and developer API's.

I will be going over the Keynote again in full the next week and add more thoughts on future episodes.

    attendees-jackets-and-25-gift-cards

For those attending WWDC this year Apple really went all out and is giving  WWDC attendees a whopping $25 App Store gift cards as well as WWDC14 Jackets.  The jackets have the number 14 pricing on the back and WWDC 14 prints on the front.  The jackets are made in the USA - so it is not like they completely cheaper out - but $25 gift card really?  Ok I get it it is the 25th WWDC - but why not $250 gift cards.

After all people spent $1600 for the tickets.

Go to the Google dev event and you get all kinds of electronic goodies. Hey but I am sure that jacket is really really nice.  Just Sayin.

QUOTE FROM ALICE - Kill them All

    Hi,

Per iOS 8 beta - I was wondering what your thoughts are of websites like https://regmyudid.com.  I used that one last year to gain access to iOS 7 before it's official release and didn't have any major issues that inhibited my usual iPhone use and I found it interesting to see how the iOS was refined through each release.  Are there risks using these sites and what are your thoughts?

    Regards,

    Ben from sunny Australia.

Hi Ben - What I have said in the past is the first beta is usually really really flakey - and really only for those that are devs and not for anyone that needs their iOS device for business.  Stay away from the first couple of betas.  Per using the service you mention - It is good to hear you had good success with that one last year - others used different services with hit or miss success.  My general feeling is the betas are for devs and those that do not mind when things go wrong.  If you do not like issues - do not like crashes - and need your iOS device for work - stay away from all the beta's - just listen to this show for the latest info on what is new in the betas.
