Thanks JEFF for the music and folks I will put the full song at the end of the episode.    I also want to thank ANTHONY for sending in the Artwork for today's show.  ANTHONY wrote the following.

    Hi Rob.

This image was made on my iPhone 5 using the LAYRS and the COLOUR SPLASH apps.

The original image was a long exposure photo taken of the clear night sky above a small church on the shores of Lake Taupo, known for its trout fishing. Credit to Ian Ashmore for the photo.

I used LAYRS to separate the sky from the church, then added a dazzle filter and changed the hue of the sky. I then captured the Tii logo from the Tii app wallpaper and overlayed the logo over the night sky.

Lastly I imported the image into COLOUR SPLASH and grayscaled the church.

Always enjoy listening to your podcast and staying up to date with all things IOS from here in New Zealand.

Well ANTHONY Thanks again for sending in this artwork and folks you can see ANTONY'S artwork in the Tii App in the extras for ep 315

    - or if you subscribe via iTunes on your computer as the album artwork and also as a stand alone post in the VIP section and at Facebook.com/todayinios.

If you have some artwork and or music you have created on your iOS device that you would like to share with the audience please email it to me at today in iOS at gmail dot com and please make sure to include which app or apps you used to create said artwork and or music.

Apple Released iOS 8 Beta 4 last week.  And the Beta keeps on getting more useful and stable from what I can see.

One of the major new features with Beta 4 was the introduction of the Native App Tips - it gives users tips on how to use iOS 8 on a weekly basis.

Display and Brightness are broken out from Wallpaper in Settings - but strangely enough the brightness settings are still also under Wallpaper.

Under Privacy - there is now an icon fro Home Data - which will list Apps requesting access to Home Data.

Under Messages - Audio and Video messages each get their own separate expiration options.

Under Mail, Contacts and Calendars - For contacts - under show in App switcher - you can toggle off Phone Favorites and Recents.  This will keep your contacts from showing in the App switcher.

Under Mail section - There are swipe options for swipe left and swipe Right.  So you can make swipe where it marks a message as read and another to flag the message for example.

In the Keyboard options for General - Quick type toggle to turn on / off - now is called Predictive.

Under the new features for chewing up your battery section is the new Section for Handoff & Suggested Apps - This has toggles for Handoff and for Suggest Apps - there are toggles for My Apps and App Store - According to the description quote Show installed apps or App store suggestions for apps relevant to your current location on the lock screen and in the App switcher as your phones location services drains down your battery like 6 year old sucking down a capri sun juice pouch.  unquote - will except for maybe that last part.  Battery Saving hint - toggle them all off.

When I sit here and Try to keep track of all the tips needed for saving your battery in iOS 8 it makes me feel like Apple almost needs to have its own app dedicated to recommending different tips.  Just Sayin.

Control Center got a slight tweak to its look.

There were some other slight tweaks / updates as we inch closer to the GM release well that and the fact  The Bug Report app is gone - that one is kind of a hint it is getting closer to the GM.

Is it perfect or 100% stable - heck no - I get random crashes especially with the podcasts app.  So I think we need at least one if not two more Beta's - but it may just be one more.

    http://fortune.com/2014/07/18/how-many-ipads-did-apple-

    sell-last-quarter-7/

Apple announced their fiscal 3rd quarter numbers - or what the rest of us call Q2 2014 numbers last week - leading up to the call the Anal-ists were all out there throwing around their Predictions - and as usual Philip Elmer dewit rounded up all these guesses.  For iPads - the analysts average 14.43 Mil units sold with a high guess of 16 Mil by Horace Dediu and a low of 12.26 by T-Michael Walkley - and the actual retail numbers was - 13.3 Mil units sold Putting Bill Choi of Janney Capital closest to the pin.

For iPhones sold - Alexander Peterc had a high guess of 39.68 Mil units sold last quarter - with Amit Daryanani guessing at 31.8 Mil and all the analysts had an average of 35.88 Mil units sold - with the actual number coming in at 35.2 Mil units sold. That means there was a 4 way tie for closest to the pin with  Daniel Tello, Stephen Turner, Timothy Arcuri and Uncle Gene Munster all guessing 35.0 Mil units sold.  Congrats to Uncle Gene - I guess I can not call him always wrong anymore.

That means to date over 550 million iPhones have sold, and over 224 Million iPads have been sold.

Some other info from the Quarterly call - iPod's sold - yes they still make iPod's - and last quarter 2.9 Mil of them found new homes.  Overall Apples Cash pile grew from 150.6 bil to 164.5 billion dollars - most over seas.  Apple had revenue of $37.4 Bil vs 35.3 Billion in the year ago quarter.  Apple Generate 10.3 Billion in cash flow and returned over 8 Billion via dividends and share buy backs.  Apple will also be doing another dividend payment of $0.47 per share in August - that amount per share is the same as before the split on an adjusted basis.

Some other miscellaneous trivia from the call - Apple said over 20 Million people watched the WWDC keynote session - a new record.

CarPlay is being integrated by 29 different auto manufacturers.  Sales in the BRIC countries for the iPhone were up 55% yr over yr.  13 Mil iPads have been sold to Education globally to date.  Devs have earned over $20 Billion dollars to date with over half of that in the past 12 months.

Now one downer for the call was the iPad sales - Tim cook did not try to get into explanations of shifting inventory and churn like last call - he simple said iPad sales were below what analysts expectations were and they were down year over year - 13.3 mil this year vs 14.6 mil in the same quarter a year ago.  The 13.3 mil number is the worst number for the past 9 quarters to put that in more perspective.

Forward guidance for next quarter was also lower over-all, than what anal-ists expected.   So iPhone sales just below expectations - iPads sales well below - and forward guidance below expectations - and all that would of course mean Apples stock has taken a beating since the call - right - I mean in the past couple of years news like this would mean a huge decline for Apple - right - ummm no.  Apple stock ended Monday at a 12 month high of $99.02 - just south of the all time high of $100 dollars and a few coins.  Seems Anal-ists are pretty excited about the iPhone 6 mockups out there.

Thanks to Dr. John for this next one - which kind of addresses on of the things Tim Cook discussed on the conference call - and that is about what happens to old iOS device.  Unlike old Android devices or heck even basically new Android devices - Old iOS devices don't just get stuck in a draw somewhere and forgotten.  There is no need for the island of Misfit iOS devices.  Seems when most people move on to a new iOS device - their old device either gets handed down to someone in the family - Hello my wife and boys.  Or it gets sold either to someone like Gazelle or Usell or directly to another consumer via a service like craigslist or eBay - and that brings us to the article from Dr. John that talks about how big a deal that is for eBay.  Nearly $2 Billion with a b dollars worth of slightly used Apple devices were sold on Ebay over just the past 12 months in the US alone.  This according to Apple.

    From the article quote

The iPhone dominated on the online auction site, accounting for 55% the $1.94 billion in sales of Apple goods. Meanwhile, Mac products accounted for 20% of Apple sales on eBay and iPad sales represented 19% of the total.

However, the iPod was a heartier competitor on eBay than it is in the market for new Apple products, accounting for 7% of all sales of Apple goods on the site.

unquote.   iPod sales by the way direct from Apple are now at 1% of revenue.

One of Cooks comments per the resale market was quote

"I think the great thing is that our products command a much higher resale value than others do. And so that leads to a larger trade-in. And from my perspective, that [means a] larger ecosystem [because] more people wind up getting on iPhone. And if we get somebody to try an Apple product and then buy an Apple product, the likelihood that they begin buying other Apple products is very high."

    unquote

It seems in Cooks and Apples mind they are going to support the price sensitive market by coming out with cool new products to get the early adopters to upgrade often and push their used Apple ware down to the more price sensitive parts of the market - get them hooked on Apple product and then hopefully they realize the value of buying more apple product and they move up the food chain when possible.

So to put it another way - Apple does not care if you drink the Kool-aid from their cup or from the cup of one of their customers - just as long as your are drinking the Apple cool-aid they are happy.   They just don't want people drinking that Android drink - you know the one - it was the horrible Orange drink you got at McDonalds back in the 70's for birthday parties - not quite a fruit drink not quite cough syrup - it lived somewhere in between.  Yeah - I bet that is a childhood memory quite a few you had suppressed for some time.   Anyway that Orange McDonalds drink is the best way to explain what the Android folks are trying to resell.

    Hi Rob,

I am a man with vision impairment from birth And have been given an apple iPhone  4s from my parents and it really easy to use with a vision impairment because it is easy to read and operate  with Siri I can't thank apple Enough for such a great device for the vision impairment people

    Regards,

    Jon P

    Hi Rob,

You brought up the  whole issue of accessability with regard to Apple. As a blind person it's difficult to explain how useful my iPhone and IOS devices are. I've been using computers now since the 80's (I'm 43) and when the first iPhone came out I was not a happy person. It was obvious to everyone back then that touch screens were the future. Well, obvious to everyone but BB and Microsoft. Anyhow, at that time I thought that touch screens spelled the end of accessability for mobile devices for blind people. However, in 2009 Apple proved me wrong when they introduced VoiceOver on the 3gs. This really was a revolution. I'd argue  it was a larger revolution than the original iPhone was for sighted people.  All these years later Android is still woefully behind and Windows Phone remains completely inaccessible; for the ten people out there who use it.

As for what Tim Cook said about ROI for making their devices accessible; well, I have a 64gb 5s and an iPad Air and Retina Mini both of which are 64gb cellular models. All of these devices were purchased to replace earlier models. Seems they are not losing money on me. Not to mention my 2013 13-inch i7 Retina MBP (which I mostly use for Windows on bootcamp). Windows still beats OS X for accessability.

Did I mention I am a happy Apple share holder? All good.

    Regards,

    Kevin B

    Hey Rob,

Great coverage of the NFB Resolution and accessibility on a mainstream podcast. Awesome! BTW: I know you were trying to get a point across, but the Amazon Kindle app has been accessible now since may 2013. Always yaaay to more books!

    Regards.

    Chelsea

Hi Chelsea - Thanks for the follow up on the Kindle App and thanks to others with the same follow up - and if I was really on my Game - I would have mentioned after reading that comment about the kindle - that since that time - Amazon put in the resources and listened to the users and made it accessible friendly. But that on their own it did take until 2013 to get to that point.  If I was on my Game I would have.  But way too many 5 Hour energy drinks to do that.

And did I mention what a nightmare I think the Health app is.  For those going how did we transition to that?  Well Because I tried to track my caffeine intake in the Health app - and wow - what an un-apple app.  If you want to use that app to track what you consume - yeah good luck with that. I know it is not fully released - but still - the UI is just plain daunting if you have to look for categories to enter what you are consuming.  There should be a way for items you put to your dashboard to tap and enter quickly a new consumption.  Like with caffeine - chances are each time you drink a drink with caffeine it will have the same amount as last time - why not have a quick plus button to add at that time your normal amount.  Ok - did I mention I am not a fan of the Health app.  Lets hope this gets the full apple treatment in the future and is more - much much more user friendly and well just useable for that mater.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

Per the Post we mentioned on the last episode about what type of iPhone 6 you want - here is an update to those numbers:

    3 People staying with 5S

6 went with the 4 in

    22 went with 4.7 in

14 went with 5.5 in - including yours truly.

    19 went with Space Grey

    9 went with silver

    11 went with gold

4 did not care on color

    8 went with 32 gb

    21 went with 64 gb

    13 went with 128 gb

    1 went with any storage

So the popular device looks to be a 4.7 Inch Space Grey iPhone 6 with 64 GB of Storage.

One new popular post in the G+ community this past week came from - the very evil Chris Andrews - who posted a picture of the stop watch app showing 8 1/100ths of a second with the following text Quote Who can beat my stop watch score. Start and stop the built in iPhone stop watch see if you can beat my time. unquote. To which many of us wasted some time trying to beat this time - and a few other posted their results with Javier M ultimately breaking the spell on all of us by posting a time of 1 1/100th of a second - for the best time possible.  Thanks Javier - your dedication is appreciated by many of us - but probably not by your employer.

    - These past couple of weeks there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

    http://techtonictimes.blogspot.com/2014/07/apple-iphone-

    6-photo-leak-shows-rear.html

Ok - How many people remember back when the iPhone 4 was the latest unit - the rear panel I talked about with the lighted apple logo of with Steve's image in the Apple?  It was a really cool and very geeky mod.  And one I loved to show off until I broke the back.  Well an iPhone that comes with a lit up logo officially has been kind of a dream of mine and others for some time and now it looks based on parts leaks as a dream that I and others will finally see come to fruition with the iPhone 6.  That's right a light up logo looks to be in my future once again.

This is no every day leak from the likes of Digitimes or BGR - nope this comes from Sonny Dickson - who seems to know exactly the right people to pay off on the production lines in China to get these type of parts.

Now another rumor per this part said the reason for the pass through opening for the logo in the back case was not for a light up logo or a logo that flashes for messages - but rather for the placement of an NFC chip.  Ummm no - I think NFC is N O when it comes to future Apple iPhones - I think iBeacons is the way Apple is going and not NFC.  It just seems like Apple has tried to distance itself from NFC in the past.  We shall see in the future.  But my Money is on a light up logo and no NFC.

    32:29

    http://www.businessinsider.com/iphone-6-parts-leak-

And to back up the leak from Sonny Dickson - comes another leak of components - this one claims to show some of the internal components Apple will use in its iPhone 6. And guess what the screw holes match up exactly with the base that Sonny dickson leaked a week earlier.  Nice to see the leaked photos of components fitting together.

Yeah the leaks just keep on keeping on.

If you are a long time listener of this show you know I say stay away from looking at Patents Apple is awarded as a future potential device - because if they are awarded a patent and said device or technology is not already out - it likely will not be out any time soon or maybe never at all.

And thus I am left in a big big quandary.  Part of me says - stick to your guns on that stance - it has proved true for the past 7 years of doing this show.

Then there is the part of me that for the last 18 months has been saying an iWatch is coming an iWatch is coming.

See Apple was just granted a patent for what can only be described as an iWatch.

Said iWatch's specs include what you would expect - Touchscreen, Accelerometer, GPS receiver, bluetooth, and alerts via Vibration. It would connect to a mobile device display notifications, and allow users to accept or decline phone calls - all pretty standard fare and much of what my pebble can do.  But then there are a few things a little more unique - like it having on board storage to store your music and videos - plus a headphone jack and you can use said iWatch with no phone necessary.

In the patent it is said the device could respond to specific movements from the user like shaking or tapping your wrist to accept or decline calls.  The patent even made mention of a nonmetallic band - and a square face.

So here is what I say about the patent - this per say is likely NOT the iWatch - but some of the features will be in THE iWatch - with some others not mentioned in the patent also showing up.

But I do find the timing of the release of the patent interesting.

Should be an interesting if not expensive fall.

Right now I am looking at getting a new iPhone 6 - if a 5.5 inch version is released, An iWatch and a new Mac Book Pro.

Thanks Lynda.com and other sponsors and supporters for making this possible.

    6-screen-sapphire-scratch-resistant-gorilla-glass-video

Lets talk a little about the Sapphire glass that may or may not be showing up on the iPhone 6 - again as I warned - don't be fooled into thinking it will be indestructible - it will not be.

And some recent videos showing the front panel - while they show it is much less likely to scratch - these videos show it can scratch. And is likely not pure sapphire.  One video shows them scratching the front of an iPhone 5S with sandpaper - but the Home button does not scratch.  Seems the Gorilla glass has a hardness rating around 6.4 - but the pure sapphire home button is the second hardest substance with a hardness rating of 9.  Diamond is a 10.  They used some sandpaper one with a hardness of 7 and one with 8 - and in both cases they easily scratched the gorilla glass on the 5S - but did not scratch the home button.

When both were turned on the reported iPhone 6 - both were also able to scratch the iPhone 6 glass - but not as much and not as easily.  This means one of two things - the glass is a fake and not really what Apple is going to use or two - Apple is not going to use pure sapphire for the main glass - but some hybrid mix with Sapphire.  Again the iPhone 6 glass did scratch but was much harder to scratch and scratched less.

As one expert said - the only way we will know for sure what Apple is using for the iPhone 6 is to get one when it is launched - and then break up the glass and look at it under a microscope.  And well expect some people to be falling over themselves to do just that and get the video up on youtube before anyone else once the iPhone 6 does launch likely September 19th or 26th.

    http://www.zdnet.com/the-apple-backdoor-that-wasnt-7000031781/

There was one non-story that the Apple haters were also quick to trip over themselves to report on and condemn Apple with not a single bit of oh what is that word or words I am looking for Ohh year Journalism or fact checking.  Seems this quote security expert unquote who goes by the title NerveGas - released a presentation at Hackers on Planet Earth in which he said he reported finding code being active in iOS devices that he could ONLY attribute to Apple putting in a back door for the government to use said code.  And well - NO - or as Apple basically put - HECK NO - no way - no how - never happened.  Doing your Fracking homework. And a few other choice words.

Now before Apple could vehemently deny said accusations which they did pretty quick and also explain what NerveGas found - here are some of the sites that quickly hung Effigies of Apple from the nearest light post and set them on fire.

The Guardian, Forbes, Times of India, The Register, Ars Technica, MacRumors, Cult of Mac, Apple Insider, InformationWeek, Read Write Web, Daily Mail,  ZDNet AND MANY MANY MORE.

They all condemned or re-reported as fact that which none of them bothered to even try to fact check or ask a real Security expert with out a name lifted from an 80's comic book.  Per the code that was found and its use here is exactly what Apple said - and which has been backed up by Real security experts.

    Quote

"We have designed iOS so that its diagnostic functions do not compromise user privacy and security, but still provides needed information to enterprise IT departments, developers and Apple for troubleshooting technical issues. A user must have unlocked their device and agreed to trust another computer before that computer is able to access this limited diagnostic data. The user must agree to share this information, and data is never transferred without their consent.

As we have said before, Apple has never worked with any government agency from any country to create a backdoor in any of our products of services."

    unquote

So for those of you that sent in links to the early articles - nothing to see here - move along - move along.

Now that is not to say Apple can't get your info out of your iOS device if it is locked down - as we reported here before a few times - they can - if say the government needs info off of it for a trial or court case and they have a court order they can send your physical device to Apple and 4 or so months later they will get it back unlocked - but it is not a quick process - and it is definitely not a remote access - just one they can only do when they physically have said device.

And all those quick to string up Apple are also ones likely with an Android device - Whom I guess do not need to worry about a back door vulnerability not when there are so many side doors the government and others can go through to get at their data - just sayin.

I think one Security expert I read on this subject summed it up best - the Hacker that did this presentation was looking for PR and those reporting on his findings were looking for web traffic - not a good combo.

Continuing with the theme of Bad reporting - Thanks to Jason Steele for the heads up on this horrible article.

The title of this next one is Quote Apple could be obsolete in 3 years: Analyst.

Now part of the horrible reporting is not that an analyst said Apple could be obsolete in 3 years - Yes and the earth could be hit by a giant Asteroid and the Royals could win the world series.  Two are completely far fetched ideas and the other is only slight far fetched.

No the horrible part of the article is the first paragraph which is often all many read and it is quote

Apple could be "obsolete" in three years, due to increasing competition and "make-believe" valuations in the technology sector, one analyst told CNBC on Thursday.

    unquote

Except if you watch the interview with said analyst or read the article fully - that is not at all what the analyst said.  He never ever said Apple was a make-believe valuation - that was later in the conversation talking about Netflix and Facebook and Amazon types with crazy PE's.  Apples PE is a conservative sub-20 - even with it sitting at a 12 month high.  But if all you did was read that first paragraph that is not what is said at all.

So CNBC in General and Arjun Kharpal - shame on you - please dig back out the J-school 101 book and do some re-reading.

    1. Hi Rob,
Clock experts say whensnooze alarms were invented, the gears in alarm clocks were standardized. The snooze gear was introduced into the existing mix and its teeth had to mesh with the other gears' teeth. The engineers had to choose between a gear that made the snooze period nine-plus minutes or 10-plusminutes.

    Regards, Luke G

    Hi Rob,

Further to the callers question in the last episode about the 9min snooze, please find a link that was discussed on the today in ios google plus page https://plus.google.com/102524769836185079840/posts/TpX55pxhMLa

Turns out that there is no way to change the standard stock alarm app, but some good suggestions anyways

    Hi Rob

I am responding to the caller in episode 314 that asked about adjusting the snooze time on the native clock app. The default 9 minute snooze length can't be adjusted, but say if wanted a 5 minute length, what you can do is set multiple alarms at 5 minute intervals. If you set an alarm at 5, 5.05, 5.10 for example, you are creating your own snooze period.

Alternatively I found this free app called Theme Clock Alarm in the App Store, that will allow you to control the snooze length:

    https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/theme-clock-alarm/id342151239?mt=8

    Hope that helps

    Regards

    Steve

    Brisbane

    Hi Rob

One other point to note is for the suggestion with the native clock app to work, you should go edit, then click on each alarm set and ensure snooze is off. This will avoid the default 9 minute snooze time occurring.

    Regards

    Stephen

    the-easiest-way-to-recharge-your-iphone

Thanks to Michael and others for this next one.

Which is the Kickstarter Project called - Cabin.

This one had a goal of 50k - and is over 152k - and has until Fri Aug 29th at 9:03 AM CT for funding.

So what is Cabin that it is able to raise over 150G's

Quote Cabin is the slim aluminum portable battery for iPhone that attaches magnetically for an unobtrusive and simple recharging experience. unquote

Ok - I think a simpler way to get across what this is - is think Apples Mag safe power adapter for your iPhone.  You plug into your lighten port a dongle that is flat on the outside - with mag connect points.  And then you can snap on your power cord.

The key ones on this are the MicroAdapter - that which plugs into your Lightening port for the iOS device and the MagAdapter - that your lightening cord plugs into.

I think the price for these two is $25 total - which in their description for that award level calls it a cabin adaptor and microadaptor.

They also have a case called the cabin and a dock called the Cabin Dock.

Their Kickstarter page is confusing to say the least.  Pricing is higher for the Cabin and cabin dock.

Yeah some people are successful despite their best efforts - guys - clean up your kickstarter page or at a min if you take the time to have an image with everything numbered and labeled - yeah keep the names the same in your awards section.  Just sayin.

Search for Cabin at kickstarter dot com or in the show notes for ep 315 at today in iOS Dot com.

Thanks to Glen or Blame this one on Glen - you pick.

This is another kickstarter project - and this one - has raised over 7.5 Million dollars.  And has until August 29th at 8:00 PM CT for funding.

So what is said kickstarter project that it could raise 7.5 Million dollars.  Well in a nutshell - it is a cooler with an 18 Volt rechargeable blender, and a detachable bluetooth speaker and USB charger, and LED LID light and wide easy rolling tires and integrated storage for plates and knife and cooler divider slash cutting board and gear tie down and well what really put it over the top - a bottle opener.

Yes a cooler - just raised over 7.5 Million on Kickstarter.  Ummm hello Coleman - seems your Marketing team has been slacking lately.  I mean how did they completely miss the mark on this obviously huge pent up demand for a much better Cooler.

This one is called Coolest Cooler - two words and From the kickstarter page for this.  quote

The COOLEST is a portable party disguised as a cooler, bringing blended drinks, music and fun to any outdoor occasion.

    unquote

Pricing for this cooler - $185 and change.

Rumor has it Samsung has already begun work on their own version they will call it the cooler coolest but it is not a complete rip off - they moved the blender from the left side to the right side and will have a gold color version.

Vs the Coolest Cooler which comes in well you know what - I think I went as far as I could on this one - look in the show notes for ep 315 if you are looking for a $185 swiss army knife of a cooler.  Thank or blame Glenn for this one.

    Love the show

    Thanks

    Jenny

Thanks Jenny - and this is per the article - Apple TV is a huge Cash Cow which is why Apple is in no rush to make it better - Yeah nice short pithy title.

Well the basic gist of the article is well what the title said - Apple is making a lot of money - over a billion dollars just from Media sales from those using Apple TV - so as such they are not interested in opening it up to the wild wild west of Apps - like say an app for Today in iOS - when they would much rather people be spending their time buying TV shows and movies.

Except - you know - you can already stream TII to your apple TV with Airplay that is in the Tii app today.  Plus the main reason people use Apple TV - Netflix - for which Apple gets - Nothing.  So yeah - not buying the argument being laid out here.

Apple has shown it is more interested in building a better ecosystem then milking a cash cow.

I guess when I said it will be an expensive fall - I forgot to mention a new Apple TV on my to purchase list if said device is released as well.

I am hoping Apple proves Ian Morris at Forbes wrong when they release the 4th gen Apple TV with app store.

Hi Rob. This past Christmas I upgraded my ipad from an ipad 2 to an iPad Air and I setup as a new device because I wanted a fresh start discovering new apps to use instead of the ones I had been using for years. I mostly used my ipad for GarageBand and lost a ton of music setting up as a new device. I backed up the old ipad to my imac, can I get those tracks back I lost on the ipad 2. I no longer have the ipad 2. Thank you! Peace, Love and ios!

    Hi Aaron,

When you go to iTunes on your Mac - goto - Preferences --> Devices

Then look under Device Backups and see if you can see the back up for your old iPad 2.

If tis is there - then you can do a restore from that back up for your current device to see if the tracks are still there.

I would recommend first - you do a full back up of your current iPad - before doing the restore from back up.

If the tracks are there then you are all set -  if not - then just do a restore from back up from that most recent back up.

    Regards,

    Rob W

    Hi Rob,

Do you know if an application that will show you the carrier cell coverage percentage of the travel when you going to trip? I travel a lot and would like to pick the best way in an area that may not have good coverage on Verizon.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

    Hi Rob,

Thanks for the accessibility coverage and promotion on your last show. You did it justice and a great job. Very enjoyable.

I am usually a very tech-savvy Apple watcher, but am in a bit of a predicament with the iPad. I received an iPad 2 in 2012 as part of a work deal and have grown to love the device because of its long battery life and opportunity to develop and use apps that require spatial awareness; the bigger screen than the iPhone is better. I’m looking into jumping up to an iPad Mini. As much as I’ve gotten used to the bigger screen, I still get lost occasionally and have small hands. I saw the configuration of iPad that I want on Amazon for $439, and am not sure if I should just hold out and wait till the next model arrives, possibly paying double the price. My iPad 2 is still kicking, but I’m noticing a performance hit. Particularly with VoiceOver running all the time, it helps to have a bit more oomph (I know, real technical term) in your processor for future-proofing. And then there’s the whole argument of whatever Apple releases in the fall—I really, really want an iWatch. I think there could be so many potential uses for a device like that in terms of health data gathered and indoor navigation.

Thoughts? when should I take the plunge? I would have sooner, but because of how I obtained it, selling the iPad 2 is not really an option.

    Regards,

    Chelsea

    Hi Chelsea,

Thanks for listening to the show and for the kind words.

Here is my recommendation to anyone looking to update right now.  If you can wait - then wait.   That way in 3 months time when the new iPads are out - you can still decide to get the device you are looking at today (but probably for less then) or if you really like the new device that will be announced you can pick it.

But if you update today - there is no choice.

So again if you can wait - then wait.  Future you will be glad past you waited today.  Either for saving money or for getting the hottest new tech.

    http://appadvice.com/appnn/2014/07/congress-passes-a-

    bill-that-once-again-makes-phone-unlocking-by-consumers-legal

I don't like to talk about the legal stuff - and not bills not yet signed into law - but I though this one was at least worth a mention.

The following is from Senator Patrick Leahy's office whom is a sponsor of this bill.  quote

The legislation approved by the House Friday, which the Senate unanimously approved last week, reinstates a 2010 rulemaking by the Librarian of Congress so that consumers can transfer, or “unlock,” their cell phones without running afoul of copyright laws. It also directs the Librarian of Congress to consider whether other wireless devices, like tablets, should be eligible for unlocking.

    unquote

Essentially this means once you complete your legal contract requirements - the carriers must allow you to unlock your phone and take it where ever you want - on top of that you as a consumer can not get software to do that unlocking for you - and those creating the software are not subject to arcane DMCA rules.

The President is expected to sign this one making it a law.

After it is signed and there is more info on what you need to do to unlock your iOS devices with out getting stuck in call waiting Limbo - I am sure we will go over it here on the show.

But I was kind of excited to see this bill passed by the Senate.

    http://appadvice.com/appnn/2014/07/vessyl-the-cup-that-

    tracks-what-you-are-drinking-rakes-in-1-million-in-preorder-sales

Thanks to Michael for this next one.  Which is the Vessyl - spelled not at all like anyone would spell it - V E S S Y L - of course.

    From their site quote

First introduced in June, Vessyl, the cup that automatically tracks your consumption, has reached a huge milestone. Preorder sales have reached $1 million.

    unquote

So what is the vessyl - it is a cup you pour your drink into - it then can tell you what said drink is and how many calories and other info - hey wait I was going to make fun of it like Colbert did and say - you know what else will tell you that info - the Side of the can you poured said drink from.

But after being flummoxed completely by the Health app - I could see the Vessyl communicating with your Health app to log in your drink info.

Pre-order pricing is $99 for this.

Supposedly it is able to tell you if you have Coke or Pepsi in the cup.  It will tell you how many calories you are drinking.  As well as other info - total grams of sugar, fat, caffeine and such.

I would say don't be the first or one of the fist to pre-order this one - let a few people get their hands and lips on it and see how it reviews first.

I was going to request one until I thought about how unlikely I would be to pour My 5 hour energy drink into it first - and yeah - I will just go back to eating less and exercising more and let the chips fall where the may. This whole tracking what you eat / drink thing is for the birds or I guess people with $100 smart Cups.

    Hi Rob,

Greetings from Chicago. I am a blind VoiceOver user.

I have a 32 GB iPhone 5 running iOS 7. I bought it unlocked on the

evening of winter solstice in 2012 at the North Michigan Avenue Apple

store.  It was a retail experience I will remember for a lifetime.

This was the first cell phone I had ever used or purchased in my life.

My main interest in the iPhone was all the incredible apps,

particularly those used for navigation and orienting someone to an

area. The store was a controlled chaos of hundreds of people swirling

around an open floor plan to catch the Apple vibrancy and catch the

buzz.  Staff struggled to identify customers from all the tourists.

Eventually, I connected with a saleswoman. I shared with her my

excitement for my new iPhone journey and how the device may transform

my life. She found an Apple trainer named Russell at the store and led

me to a private upstairs area away from the crowds.

To my amazement, Russell helped me with unboxing the phone for the

first time and then provided a 45-minute tutorial on the phone's

physical elements, accessibility settings, initial set up, and he

showed me how to perform the basic gestures to use the phone. He

seemed as familiar with voiceover as most blind iPhone users. Russell

showed me how to insert a nanno sim card and at one point he attached

an audio splitter to the headphone jack and we both listened to

voiceover through headphones so I could hear the demonstration in the

busy store and successfully learn the phone's basic gestures while

Russell offered iPhone coaching and feedback. He was patient,

    thorough, and totally

knowledgeable about VoiceOver for the blind and understanding how

helpful it is to my independence.

You are so right when you say that Apple is like no other technology

company. Google doesn't have the attention to detail to ensure that

end users have a seamless, highly effective use of their technology.

They only care about putting ads under your nose.

Nothing else can light a candle to the iPhone.   Apple's success is in

providing mass simplicity to high functionality with the company

deciding to champion simplicity over complexity.

    Hi Rob,

I also had a very bad experience with FreedomPop. I preordered one of their WiFi hotspots when it first started. The terms that they advertised (thanks to the Internet Archive Wayback Machine, they still can be seen) were, 500MB free, $10/gigabyte over that, and no other charges.  By the time my unit shipped, they changed the terms to $20/gigabyte unless you were on a monthly plan. I pointed out that that was not what they had advertised, and they denied it, a clear lie.  That reduced my use case from something that I would use often to something that I would use only in emergencies. Then 99 cent charfes started showing up on my credit card bill despite my not using the product. They had instituted a charge for each month you didn't use the device. I complained, and their solution was to cancel my account, leaving me with a $99 paperweight. A most unethical company, your comparison to GoDaddy doesn't even come close.

    Regards,

    Bob D

    hi Rob,

so i now have an iphone five on freedompop and it is nice.  download speeds of 13-14 mbs.

the freedompop app (dialer) still needs work, sometimes it won't register right away.  I have had a magic jack account for five years and must say that despite their almost non-existant customer service, and their other little shortcomings, the ios app is perfect So, in summary, if I run low on data, I will use their app (and their phone number).

By using the magic jack app I also don't need to "have" another number for everyone to learn.

    regards,

    JOHNNY

Built in always on intercom system linked to my AppleTV.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/27/upshot/hold-the-

    phone-a-big-data-conundrum.html

A parting shot to an article in the The Upshot section of the NYTimes - thanks to Emiko Fruend for the heads up on this one.

The article is one about a conspiracy theory that has popped up the past few years - and correlation vs causation.

See this is about the articles you will start to see popping up in 3 2 1..

    left ear

And that is that apple causes your iOS devices to start to slow down right before a new iOS device comes out and then more once it does come out to force you to upgrade.

    itch

This of course is pure BS - no one supports older devices longer with the latest software then Apple does in the mobile space.  That the iPhone 4S will be upgradable to iOS 8 is proof of that.

    left ear

And no your iOS device are not getting slower - there is no article showing the start times and launch times of iOS devices being slower at the end of August then they were at the end of December.

    itch

What you will see is that when you start to see how fast the new devices are - well then you start to feel like your iOS device is slower.  And truth be many of us are just looking for an excuse to upgrade.  Hey - I think there is a pixel out - time to upgrade.  Hey there is a scratch on the back of my iPhone 5S - time to upgrade.  Hey the Silver iPhone clashes with my Gold wedding ring time to upgrade - some of us will look for any excuse like I think my Mac Book Pro is running a little slower now and If I upgrade to a new Mac Book Pro I could save a good 1/2 hour a week combined and that is time I could spend with my family - time to upgrade.  See how easy it is.

    left ear

Others writing articles about the slowing of iOS devices know about the placebo effect and know if they write and article that says iOS devices slow down this time of year - people will go - yeah hey my iOS device seems slower know that you mention it - evil Apple - how dare they.

    itch

So anyway - be prepared in the next few weeks to see a plethora of these articles including like this article - charts showing the increase in searches about my iPhone slowing down that happens this time of year.

And how is your left ear feeling.

And Before we go today I want to remind you to send in your feedback to the show - 206-666-6364 - that 206-moon-dog - or record your feedback and email it to the show at today in iOS at gmail dot com - The  feedback can be a question or comment per something someone said on this episode or it can be a question or rant you have about something else.  An App or product review - good or bad - as long as it is iOS related - it is welcomed.  I am always looking for new Artwork to feature that you created on an iOS device - just put some Tii branding on it and send it in.  And of course we are always looking for more music created on an iOS device to play on the show.  This is your show and your feedback is greatly desired.  And don't forget to check out our Moderated Google Plus community by going to todayinios dot com slash community.

    Hi Rob,

I'm blind and use VoiceOver.  I connected my iPhone

to a Midi Keyboard as playing precise notes using the on-screen

instruments is quite challenging for me.  Having said that, Apple has

done wonders with accessibility and making GarageBand mostly

accessible has allowed me the chance to record this song.  Thank you

for including it in your podcast.

    http://www.cultofmac.com/286369/tweaks-added-ios-8-beta-3/

Well iOS 8 Beta 3 came out on the 7th - pretty much right on schedule well compared to years past that is.  And I did update not just my 3rd gen iPad this time - but also my iPhone 5S - which is my iOS work horse.  So far so good.

Per Beta 3 - nothing really big was added - also as expected - but lots of little to mid-size tweaks and adds.

Probably the biggest add in Beta 3 is iCloud drive is now available.  Which as it states Quote the easiest way to access your documents across all your devices. To access documents, upgrade all your devices to iOS 8 or OS X Yosemite and turn on iCloud Drive.  unquote

Which well I have not updated my Mac to yet - actually I still have not updated my Mac to Mavericks yet.  Guess I will be updating that soon.

A new iCloud drive icon has been added to the iCloud settings menu.  It can be toggled on and off to allow apps to store documents and data in your iCloud. There’s also an option to allow other people to look you up in apps by your Apple ID email address.  More on this in the fall I am sure

Also new in iOS 8 beta 3 Apple added the ability to track your steps and distance using the M7 co-processor - this obviously just for the iPhone 5S, iPad Air and iPad Mini Retina - those are the only 3 devices with the M7.  There is also new categories you can manually enter in data - like how much caffeine you consumed.  FYI - the 5 hour energy drink I consumed to get this show out - it is 200 mg of caffeine.  vs say 330 MG of caffeine for a grande coffee at starbucks or 415 mg for a venti - so yeah - don't give me grief for my once a week or so 5 hour energy drink.  It is cheaper than a star bucks too.  Sorry but manually entering data about caffeine intake - yeah - not going to do it.  Just too lazy.

Now that I updated to iOS 8 beta 3 for my iPhone 5S - I can say one of my most loved new features is the updates to the weather app.  You now get by the hour weather out 24 hours.  And you get per day weather forecast 9 days out.  The 24 hour one is really nice to see what will be happening the next morning through out the morning when planning for the kids activities.

In Beta 3 - they also centered a lot of the weather data.  This is the data in iOS 7 that is behind the temp at the top when you tap on it - this is now at the bottom - and you scroll up for it.  Plus there is other info like visibility and UV index.  Overall - I am very much liking the new Weather app.

There were some more new static wallpapers added.  I must say some of the wallpapers available would do well in the New Tacky video from Weird Al - just sayin.

Have not seen that video yet - Oh it is very good - google it.  OR bing it or duck duck go it.

One new feature over all in iOS 8 is the ability to see Recently deleted photos and Videos and recover them.  beta 3 adds a timestamp to each photo or video showing when each photo is set to be deleted from the deleted folder.

iOS 8 introduces Wifi calling - and beta 3 seems to have it activated for T-mobile beta testers. Not all carriers are supporting this to start - more on this in the future.

In Beta 3 there is now a toggle for Enabling Handoff - this is where continue using apps between all of your iCloud devices.  This is set on by default - Battery saving tip - turn it off unless you plan on actually using that service.

Another addition with beta 3 - adding a toggle under Settings then messages - for audio and video messages - you can toggle that on to automatically keep those message - before you needed to manually save each one.

Which I mean is a pain to tap extra keys when your significant other is sending you a private video message seeing how you might not have a free hand at that time.  Good things Apples engineers were all over that one.

ok 57 laughs to 6 unsubscribes for that joke - I can live with it.

Ok not sure who this one is for - but now you can turn off Apples quick type keyboard.  Go to Settings >> General >> Keyboard >> QuickType.

Again not sure who this is for - but I really like the quick type keyboard.  FYI - You always hide the QuickType bar temporarily by swiping down on it, and swiping back up to reveal again.  Along with Weather - quick type is one of my top favorite new features in iOS 8.

One more feature kinda for the set up of iOS 8 beta 3 there is now an option to to share App Analytics with App developers.  From Apple quote Help app developers improve their apps by allowing Apple to share crash dat as well as statistics about how you use their apps with them unquote.  Now if you select this to be on - Extra data and battery usage you will have - and maybe you want to turn it off later on - or maybe you did not turn it on and you feel guilty about not sharing your data with app devs.  Ok - the former is more likely that the later - but in any case if you want to change your initial choice go to Settings then Privacy - then Diagnostic & usage - and you will see the Toggle at the bottom.  It looks to be an all or nothing share - as in share with all app devs or don't share at all.

Well those are some of the highlights with iOS 8 Beta 3 - which I have to say is running really well on both my devices I have upgraded to it.  Which is my 3rd Gen iPad and my iPhone 5S.

I should point out my Pebble Watch is working fine with Beta 3 - I had heard from quite a few people that Betas 1 and 2 - that was not the case.

One feature I found by accident in Beta 3 - and it could have been there in other betas of iOS 8 is when you triple tap one time - you get the Zoom menu box pop up that has the options

    Toogle zoom

    Window zoom

    Choose Filter

    and

    Show Controller

Toogle zoom - turns zoom on and off.

Window zoom or Full Screen Zoom if you tap on it.  Lets you pick between zooming all of the screen or just a section.  when it shows full screen zoom in the menu it really means window zoom is active and vice versa - and also the option resize the window zoom lens is there.

Choose filter is a nice option and gives you the options for none, inverted, grayscale, gray scale inverted and finally low light.

Low light is nice as it changes the brightness level of your iOS device - say you are using it in bed - it essentially reduces how bright it can be - think of it as fine adjust for low light brightness.

Any way this looks to be new in iOS 8 beta 3 - and if not new - still new to iOS 8 and new to mentioning on this show.

Again that is a single triple tap on any screen including the lock screen - as long as you have zoom turned on in accessibility.

Again Apple adding great new accessibility features.

Here is some listener feedback on iOS 8 beta 3.

    Hi Rob,

Per beta 3 - It is very stable - I put it on my iPad as well as now my iPhone.  Still no problem other than longer startup time on my 4S.

    Regards,

    KK

    Hi Rob,

    Per Beta 3

I use to write software so I joined the developer team to gain access to tools and the betas. Last year I started downloading the betas at beta 3. This year is started at beta 2.

    Beta two was rough.

Now with beta 3 I have new issues.

I like the betas and have a high tolerance for failure (beta 2 pushed it to the limit a few times) that said I don't think beta 3 is ready for prime time.

    Keep up the good work

    Regards,

    BW

    apple-advances-ios-8-os-x-yosemite-as-android-users-left-frustrated-

    Hi Rob,

This shows how bad journalism (Reuters) leads to good journalism (Apple Insider) when reporters actually fact-check. Your contempt for tech bloggers who don’t know what they claim to study is shared by me with regards to the Reuters article.

    Regards,

    Chelsea

And Chelsea's comments were definitely on the kinder side of what many wrote in on this one - and it is per and lets be blunt here - a horrible schlock article written by Christina Farr and published by Reuters and edited by Edwin Chan and Peter Henderson. Let the guilty be named.  And her comments about Apple insider are per Daniel Eran Dilgers article - the best response I read on this.

I want to state normally any time there is public debate about usability issues for those with a disability - that is good.  However when there is an article as clearly slanted or just as plain wrong as is the case with Christina Farrs article - it has the potential to do real harm - if there is not a debate especially a strong swift debate.  Someone reading her article ONLY would come away with the feeling Apple products are not good for those with a disability - that the National Federation for the Blind is upset with Apple and that Apple does not care about those with disabilities.  That messaging beyond being plain wrong - can also be very tragic  for those with a disability that then go and make a purchasing decision based on that bad info.  Instead of getting an iPhone that has more features out of the box for those with disability they wind up with a far inferior device resulting in a much lower quality of life for the mis-educated user.  That is my concern with regards to this article from Christina Farr.

Now lets get into the deets so to speak.

From the article by Farr quote:

Rival Google Inc, whose Android operating system drives more phones than Apple, is also under pressure, but as the creator of the modern smartphone and a long-time champion for the blind, Apple is feeling the most heat.

    unquote

Farr wrote with regards to those with accessibility needs

quote Apple hasn't been a steady champion. unquote

HOLLY CRAP - I mean WOW.  REALLY.  Or as Jim Dalrymple from the loop wrote quote Dear Reuters, you f…ing morons,” unquote.

Can anyone  name a single high tech company that has been a bigger or more steady champion for the needs of those with physical disabilities then Apple has been?  Any tech company or any company at all?  And if so explain why that choice?  Because I am scratching my head to think of any company even remotely close.  Apple did not jump on the bandwagon of accessibility - Apple was offering up solutions in the 90's and 80's.  It has a very very long and consistent history of being THE champion for those with accessibility needs.  And this is not something that is hidden knowledge.  This is something a simple google search will tell you.

Here is a quote from Seighard W a blind listener of this show - it is from his first email to me on October 5th 2011. Quote  I think it would be nice to mention Apple’s commitment to accessibility and how revolutionary IOS devices are for a visually impaired person due to their out of the box accessibility at no extra cost. Previously we had to purchase often very expensive specialty devices which had a fraction of the features of an IOS device at often the same or even more cost. unquote

And from Steve R from June 2012

quote:"I am registered Blind from Surrey in the UK and i am an avid ios & Mac user since i first accidentally came across Voiceover on the iPhone 3Gs. Since that moment a couple of years ago i now own an iPhone 4s & 4, iPad 1 & 3, iMac 27", MBP with 27" Ex Display(i mainly use high levels of zoom) & the apple TV 2. every device has Voiceover which is what the Blind community has been waiting for and i can't tell you how much these products have transformed my life!!" unquote

And I have had many many other emails like that about how iOS devices have drastically improved the quality of life for the users.

It is as if Farr deliberately went out of her way to paint Apple in a bad light.  Normally I would say don't blame on malice that which could easily be explained by incompetence - but well this next part of the article has me rethinking that thought process.

    Quote

Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook in a 2013 speech at Auburn University described people with disabilities "in a struggle to have their human dignity acknowledged." He said, "They're frequently left in the shadows of technological advancements that are a source of empowerment and attainment for others." unquote.

And here is where I really questions the motivations of the author.

She left out the rest of the quote from Tim cook - essentially changing the entire meaning of what he was saying.  Tim continued

    Quote

... but Apple's engineers push back against this unacceptable reality, they go to extraordinary lengths to make our products accessible to people with various disabilities from blindness and deafness to various muscular disorders.

"I receive hundreds of e-mails from customers every day, and I read them all. Last week I received one from a single mom with a three year old autistic son who was completely non-verbal, and after receiving an iPad, for the first time in his life, he had found his voice. I receive scores of these incredible stories from around the world and I never tire of reading them.

"We design our products to surprise and delight everyone who uses them, and we never, ever analyze the return on investment. We do it because it is just and right, and that is what respect for human dignity requires, and its a part of Apple I'm especially proud of." unquote

Farr immediatly followed up her questionable truncation of Tim Cooks  quote with:

    quote

"the company declined to comment on its accessibility strategy or whether developers should be required to make apps accessible." unquote

Making it seem as if Apple was uncaring and unresponsive.

Daniel Eran Dilger mentions Apples entire section of its website dedicated to Accessibility issues and solutions.  Which you can find easily enough at

    https://www.apple.com/accessibility/

There are sections on Vision, Hearing,  Physical & Motor skills - and Learning & Literacy.  This is information Apple makes very easy to find and any reporter worth her salt could have found if they remotely tried or wanted to find it.

    As Dilger said quote

Reuters turned the story upside-down to portray Apple as indifferent to the needs of disabled users. unquote

And Farr did not even remotely mention or Hint at Tim Cooks comments from the Apple shareholders meeting earlier this year where Tim ripped into the representative from the National Center for Public Policy Research also known as the acronym S C R O O G E  - where they wanted apple to commit to only doing things that were profitable - Tim cook said quote "When we work on making our devices accessible by the blind, I don’t consider the bloody ROI," unquote

Lets be clear iOS is years ahead of Android when it comes to Accessibility in Part because of Apples commitment not to ROI but to what is RIGHT - not to point that out in the article or to imply other wise was incompetence at best.

Farr to her defense on Twitter tried to say the article was all about holding apple accountable for all of the app devs out there and getting them to require that their apps have in the proper accessibility features - just like Apples own apps - I added that last part - as she did not even acknowledge that much.

listener Kevin B back on Feb 19th 2013 wrote the following:

    Quote

As a blind user of both an iPhone and iPad I can assure you that the Kindle app is useless for blind users.

While Apple does much for making IOS useful for the blind the app developer has to do their part as well.

Amazon generally has given the whole blind community the middle finger; failing to make any of their kindle devices usable by the blind with the exception of the Kindle Keyboard original which was partly usable.

    unquote

Apple has created the tools and framework to make apps that are accessible.  It has provided guidance and suggestions to developers on how to do this.  Do All developers follow these guidelines or suggestions - of course not.  Should they - of course they should.  But this article whose goal may have been to point this out - did such a bad job of getting that message across as it devolved into what looks like a slanted hit piece either full of malice or incompetence.  And worst yet - cast Apple and iOS devices in a disingenuous light when it comes to accessibility features.

As Mark A Riccobono President of the National Federation of the Blind commented on their recent resolution that was passed that called for Apple to work with the NFB to create and enforce policies, standards and procedures to ensure accessibility of all apps and in particular to ensure accessibility is not lost when an app is updated.  Which is clearly a real world concern - especially when an App dev does a complete re-write of an app and they push to get the new version out when they may have not taken the time yet to put in the proper labels for all the button for voiceover to be effective.  With regards to the resolution passing and the article by Farr here is what the President of the National Federation of the blind said in a blog post

Quote I thought the chatter around the resolution would fade away until some media reports made inaccurate assertions about the resolution, its content, and what actions the NFB will take to carry it out. Many of these inaccurate assertions have been fueled by a provocative and poorly reported article from the Reuters news service, linked here only for reference. Reuters has already been forced to correct the article because it reported, inaccurately, that the National Federation of the Blind once brought suit against Apple, Inc. This never happened, although a demand letter was sent regarding the accessibility of iTunes and iTunes U, and the Massachusetts Attorney General opened an investigation. Those actions resulted in a voluntary agreement with Apple that was a significant step in getting us the accessibility we experience today. unquote

He continues late in the blog with this comment quote

Apple has done more for accessibility than any other company to date, and we have duly recognized this by presenting the company with at least two awards (including our annual Dr. Jacob Bolotin Award) and publicly praising it whenever the opportunity arises.

    unquote

For the record - I did reach out to Christina Farr the author and Edwin Chan and Peter Henderson the editors via email requesting they come on the show to talk about Christina's "article" and the rebuttal article by Daniel Eran Dilger from Apple Insider.  I reached out to all three on Monday July 14th - none of them replied - but I did reach Edwin Chan by phone the evening of the 15th - I called him - and in that call he said Reuters would not be pulling the article and was standing behind it - He said that even after I mentioned the comments from the President of the NFB.  Again I can't say this is malice but if it was - maybe they already cashed he check from Samsung.  Just sayin.  Honestly I can't understand why Reuters has not pulled this article - it really is that bad.

Once Again this article I believe was supposed to be about issues and frustrations - rightly so of users of apps with disabilities face from those apps that have no usability features or lack too many or worse yet those that when updated - loose features they once had.  And clearly that later one is the most frustrating especially if it is an app you rely on.  But sadly that is not the message the article ultimately conveyed and its apparent malice, poor reporting and mis-reporting at the end of the day had the potential to do more harm than good.

Apple is committed to usability improvements of iOS 8 - you heard me mention that on this show when I went over the new features for iOS 8 - as mentioned on ep 310 which includes:

    Speak Screen

    Improved zoom for accessibility

    Alex voice for Accessibility

    Grayscale

Braile Keyboard for direct 6 dot braile input

    and

Multi-device support for MFi hearing aids

Not to mention support for 3rd party keyboards which will definitely help on the accessibility side.

Can apple do more to help on the accessibility side? Yes of course - and will they do more? YES of course they will - how do I know they will - Simply Because no one has been a more steady champion to the needs of those with accessibility issues than Apple - Period.

But it is also up to individual app devs to do their parts and to use the tools from Apple to add in those features needed by all.  And to properly test their apps for said features - and most importantly to listen to the feedback of their users.  And Now I want to put my money where my Mouth is - two years ago I did a call to action for blind beta testers of the tii and libsyn apps - Thanks for all those that helped out.  And we are right now doing a complete rewrite of the Tii And libsyn apps - and we need beta testers again - If you are interested in being a beta tester for the Tii App and the libsyn core app that also powers hundreds of other podcasters apps such as WTF with marc maron, Aisha Tylers apps, Ben greenfields, Mac OS Ken and many many others - please email me Rob at libsyn dot com - and let me know you are interested in being a beta tester - again we are looking for those that use voice over and other accessibility features with iOS apps. Please email me rob at libsyn dot com - l i b s y n - or   today in iOS at gmail dot com.  whichever one you can remember. and please put beta tester in the subject line.  Thanks

    earnings-announced-for-july-22nd/

Apple announced that on July 22nd - they will be doing their quarterly conference call - Yippie - that timing works out well - as the next day I will be presenting at K-Fest again - that is the Apple II Conference here in Kansas city.  IT is a yearly thing I love presenting at - as it gets me out in front of the true geeks talking about Apple and iOS.

As always - I will have a post first as a blog post with a recap of the numbers and then a full on episode shortly there after.

The conference call as normal will start at 2:00 PM PT / 5:00 PM ET.  Look for the post right before the start of the call and then updates right after.  And a push notice as well. If you have the Tii app the post will be in the App - everyone else go to today in iOS dot com.

    IBM-Forge-Global-Partnership-to-Transform-Enterprise-Mobility.html

In Overland Park on Tuesday We were getting a cold front - it was down below 55 degrees when I woke up or went to sleep - they were to close to each other to matter.  They Said it was because of a Polar Vortex - this time in the summer - and strangely while it was very cool in Overland Park - it seems in both Cupertino CA and Armonk NY on Tuesday it was so cold Hell seems to have frozen over -  That is the only way to describe the joint press release by Appel and IBM that they are forging a global Partnership to transform Enterprise Mobility.

They announced quote an exclusive partnership that teams the market-leading strengths of each company to transform enterprise mobility through a new class of business apps—bringing IBM’s big data and analytics capabilities to iPhone® and iPad®. unquote

Holly ICE SKATES IN HADES Batman.

Also from the press release they said this partnership will be built around four core capabilities which are quote

    • a new class of more than 100 industry-specific enterprise solutions including native apps, developed exclusively from the ground up, for iPhone and iPad;
    • unique IBM cloud services optimized for iOS, including device management, security, analytics and mobile integration;
    • new AppleCare® service and support offering tailored to the needs of the enterprise;
    •
    •  and  new packaged offerings from IBM for device activation, supply and management.
    • unquote

This is Apple not saying they are taking Enterprise seriously with regards to iPhones and iPads - this is Apple and IBM SHOWING combined they are taking the enterprise seriously for iOS devices.

Per what Wallstreet thought - well initially they seemed excited the stock opened at a new 52 week high at $97 but at the end of the day it rolled off a cliff and ended at under $95.  Seems Wallstreet is much more impressed with rumors these days then hard cold facts - even if the facts are really really positive.

I think this announcement is huge as it helps secure Apples place in the enterprise - in other words - there are very few IT managers these days that I have to say go and fire - Go back six plus years ago and listen to my fire you IT manager rants about IT nazis that would not allow iPhones in the work place.

This announcement while what maybe pushing apple from 98% of the fortune 500 to 98.2% is not much - on that front.  But where it will matter is the % of those phones at each of the 98.2% of fortune 500 companies - where maybe many were just 1 or 2% of the work force using iPhones - also known as upper management - now iPhones can work their ways down to the whole work force with much less IT friction and maybe with some IT greasing of the wheels - thanks to IBM and their Apps and sales force.

Again - While Wallstreet was not impressed - Me and the devil - well we are skating figure 8's.

    VOICEMAIL MESSAGE - Justin_PA_answer_imessage

    Hi Rob,

I am just listening to your latest podcast and wanted to respond to Shandy who was disappointed that the Alex voice will only work on the 5S or later (I assume it requires the 64 Bit processor). . I am also completely blind and use Voiceover exclusively. I of course was also curious about the Alex voice and downloaded it (incidently it takes up 809 Mb of space) and I used it probably for all of 10 minutes before reverting back to the default female high quality voice. In my opinion Alex on the iPhone sounds muffled and less clear than the default high quality female voice especially at slightly higher speed.

I know from discussions with other blind people that text to speech voice preferences are very subjective and it will be interesting to see how many like Alex on the iPhone as it is. Maybe Apple will improve this, on the Mac Alex is a very good text to speech voice, but for now at least for me it has little appeal on the iPhone.

Lastly, if Shandy’s contract runs out in September, she can get a free 5S if she renews for 2 years. Actually, my niece and her husband both just upgraded to 5S phones here in Canada and paid $0 with Telus on a 2 year contract. I guess some carriers already started to get rid of older inventory by offering the 5S for free. Maybe she can convince her Mom with the argument that this would also mean she has a phone which is once again covered under warranty; if all else fails maybe a strategic “accident” might have to put the old 4S out of its misery!

    Regards,

    S for Canada

    Hi Rob:

I use Swype on my Android tablet. I love it. If Apple did not allow swipe style keyboards this time around, I was ready to jump ship. I have a muscle degenerative disease. Being able to swipe for a keyboard is absolutely essential for me. I'm glad now that I do not have to jump ship and can keep all my iDevices.

One listener said they will not be able to get Alex voice for VoiceOver on their iPhone 4S. I believe this is not true. iPhone 4S will be updated with iOS 8. iOS 8 will have Alex. I don't believe any betas have it yet. I don't know where they got their info but I haven't been able to find anything that would suggest that iOS 8 with regards to Alex will be different for any iDevice which can be updated.

I have searched for a definitive answer per Alex voice work on an iPhone 4S or not - and well to date I have not found that answer - just lots of speculation both ways.  If anyone knows the answer for sure and can send a link that tracks back to Apple for confirmation please let me know. Thanks

    Hi Rob,

I was writing about the gifting issue mentioned in episode 313. I know you can't send a gift using iTunes credit. The person needs to make sure they have valid payment information on the account which they could do on an iOS device settings > iTunes and App Store > tap Apple ID > sign in and tap payment info or on a Mac or PC in iTunes by clicking on their Apple ID in the iTunes store pane. Hope this helps!

    Regards,

    Jonathan N

    VOICEMAIL MESSAGE - Janet_OH_fdbk_shannon_imessages

    Rob,

I am guessing the caller, Shannon, who is having trouble with iMessages is not on AT&T.

AT&T is the only provider I am aware of that allows data use and talk at the same time. If he is getting an iMessage dump after getting off the phone it likely due to his data connection being unavailable until the call ends and iMessages requiring data and not cellular connection to transmit.

If his messages are showing up in green from this issue my best guess would be that the iMessage attempted to send or reveive and could not establish a data connection and then reattempted as a text. I know text uses the cellular connection but I do not know if non AT&T users can talk and text at the same time.

As far as his wife's phone showing his email and his not showing hers for iMessages this is probably due to her setup of iMessages and not having her email selected as a delivery method for iMessages when setting up the phone. To check you go to

"messages" then "send and receive" and you can see what delivery options are selected and can add/delete delivery options.

There is also the unlikely possobility that he does not have his wife's email address saved in her contact on his phone.

    Hope this helps.Regards,

We are now well over 1,000 members in our Google+ community and growing.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

Being over 1,000 members on Google+ seems to a mating call of sorts to spammers.  Yeah as soon as we hit 1,000 members the number of requests jumped with well over 3/4 clearly being from spammers - I am doing my best to reject spammers from the get go - Some are easy to tell - pictures of good looking woman with a guys name is kind of a give away.  Or a business name - note I do not accept business names.  Must be a real persons name. For the record I have nothing against good looking women if they are real - heck I am married to one - and if you are an attractive female and you did not get accepted - I am sorry for the symmetrical female facial features with lots of cleavage profiling - just email me and I will get you in.  That all said - some will get around my filtering - and when they post spam posts - I will delete the posts and kick them out.  Again over 99% of those getting accepted are legit users playing by the rules and putting up good posts. Speaking of which -

One post in the G+ community this past week came from -

Craig Lucas - and it was the most commented on post with 29 comments - His post was quote Ok fellow iOS folks, imagine the iPhone 6 launched tomorrow in 4 inch, 4.7 in & 5.5 in, all come in Gold, Silver & Space Grey, all come in 32, 64 & 128 gig. What iPhone 6 would you pick? unquote

    Updates-to-iTunes-U.html

One thing I did not mention on the last show was Apples announcement about updates to iTunes U - and one of the key parts of that announcement was quote The new in-app updates to iTunes U give teachers full course creation capabilities on iPad, with the ability to directly add rich content and learning materials from iWork®, iBooks® Author or any of the over 75,000 educational apps available for iPad. Taking advantage of the built-in camera on iPad, teachers can also capture photos and videos to incorporate real-world subject matter into any course, making relevant content available to all students in an instant. unquote

I had a few teachers email in and say they were really excited about this announcement and looking forward to trying this out next school year - well ok - maybe not looking forward to the summer being over - but interested in trying it out when the summer comings to a tragic end.

    will-feature-advanced-haptic-feedback-technology/

    Hi Rob,

I saw this article. I don't necessarily believe haptic feedback will be in the iPhone 6, but the part that apple would make their own "bulldog" version or license them. Apple has deep pockets. What are your thoughts

    Thanks for the Show

    Jason H

I think Haptic feedback has to be one of the oldest rumors for the iPhone there is. Going back to even before the first iPhone came out.  I am not sure I am even legally allowed to talk about about a rumor that is over 7 years old.

quickly looking through some old notes Back in July 2009 - we reported on an article at Mac Rumors where they talked about a recent Apple patent with regards to Haptic feedback. that was   5+ years ago - that patent was made public and in all that time - NOTHING - NADDA - ZIP -  And once again - Haptic was a rumor we talked about prior to the iPhone launching in 2007.

I am going to guess it is not going to happen this time around either.

But thanks for the trip down memory lane - now I just need to find a rumor about removable batteries and physical keyboard and we will be all set.

    50:56

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5R0_FJ4r73s

A couple of videos came out this past week showing what is supposed to be the actual front panel sapphire glass of the iPhone 6 - in the videos they tortured the glass - trying to scrape it with keys and a big old buck knife and hit it with a hammer and then try to hammer a nail on it and then twist it and bend it almost 90 degrees - and it survived all that with no scratches - but in one of the videos they then ran it over with a car tire and that finally shattered it.

Remember sapphire glass is NOT repeat is NOT transparent aluminum  - It is going to break - people will get the next iPhone with the Saphire glass they will drop it and they will have the screen shatter.  Some times that will be just dropping it from their lap.  It is not magic - it is not indestructible - you still need to treat it with care.  What is should be is harder to scratch than gorilla glass - much harder to scratch - and by default much less likely to shatter from small falls - unless those falls hit just right on something pointy sticking up.  Like the bolt on the floor between seats on a south west airliner.

There will be videos within a couple of days of people on youtube bemoaning their new iPhone 6 screen shattered and they are shocked and angry - because they thought it was magical.

If you watch the videos - you will see the glass is very strong and takes a lot of abuse.

The other nice thing was them showing how thin the sapphire glass is and how there is no distortion or color shift.

It looks close to invisible or completely transparent.  But just not quite as good as  Transparent Aluminum.

On the rumor front another new rumor is that the A8 processor will be clocked at 2 GHZ - but still stay at dual cores.  So essentially just going from 1.3 / 1.4 GHZ for the latest top of the line iOS devices using an A7 to 2 GHZ for the next top of the line devices.

Expect more rumors about the A8 over the next two months.

    http://www.cultofmac.com/286905/apple-reportedly-places-

    unprecedented-order-iphone-6-units/

In the hey lets make stuff up an count how many people report it like it is fact category comes a quote report unquote out of Taiwan's Business Weekly - saying that Apple has ordered at least 68 Million units of its new iPhone.  Which they claim is twice as large as the order Apple placed for the iPhone 5.

Not to be out done - Taiwan Topology Research Institute when they were not busy pulling monkey's out of their nether region also pulled out these numbers - saying the iPhone 6 would sell around 80 million units by the end of 2014 with the 4.7 inch version accounting for 70 million of those - while the 5.5 inch version would sell between 8 and 10 mil units during that time frame.

First they are skipping over the possibility of a 4 inch iPhone 6.  And second did they not look at our results in the google+ community - where only 55% would be going for the 4.7 inch version and over 30% would be going for the 5.5 inch version.

Again email in which version you want.

    watch-firm-tag-heuer-iwatch-rumors-swirl/2014-07-07

Adding more fuel to the iWatch rumor fire is that Apple hired an exec from Swiss watch firm Tag heuer.  Mr Patrick Pruniaux was the VP of sales for Tag Heuer.

It definitely looks like there is a lot of smoke coming from the iWatch rumors for their not to be a fire at this point.  Rumors and speculation about how many iWatches would be sold caused Apple stock on Monday to jump almost 2% points at one point in the day.

    55:30

    http://newsspear.com/apple-iphone-6-struggles-production-issues/

Of course the next day a completely baseless rumor about Apple having iPhone 6 production issues - caused the stock to pretty much give up all it gained on Monday.

For the rumor quote KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expressed in one of his research notes that problems Apple is facing with the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 are even more challenging for the 5.5-incher, possibly leading to delays.

I am trying to remember back to the last time there was a rumor leading up to the iPhone launch that said there were production delays that would lead to delays - let me think was it last year or the year before that or the one before that or hey wait - this rumor almost verbatim has been floated out there every single year prior to the launch of the iPhone.  Hmmm almost makes you think it is not true - again.

The report by Ming-Chi Kuo also stated the 5.5 inch version may not pass the drop tests.  because you know he watched a video of a car running over the sapphire glass and saw it shatter.

Some are also saying the 5.5 inch version will not launch at all in 2014 now or just in minutely sparse quantities and not until november best case.

Or again - this could all just be what comes out the back side of a Male Bovine.  Just sayin.

    http://www.loadthegame.com/2014/07/12/iphone-6-listed-

    amazon-japan-release-date-price/

There were a lot of posts about the iPhone 6 being listed on Amazon Japan with release date, price, display size and what not.  So lets look at the possible reasons for this.

    1.  Apple gave Amazon all this info for their system 2 months early because you know Apple loves to give out info about their products early especially to a competitor that just announce their own smartphone - and the info released is accurate.

    2. Someone at Amazon was creating a place holder for what most of the world expects will be the next iPhone based on the plethora of rumors and they just took some educated guesses - but wanted to get that place holder in place so they could do some tests.

Option 1 - Apple spills beans to competitor

Option 2 - amazon doing testing

Oh wait Option 3 - someone at Amazon Japan is just yanking all our collective chains.

Yeah now put them in order of likeliness.

    http://www.redmondpie.com/iphone-5c-outsold-the-mighty-

    galaxy-s5-in-may/

We have heard for quite some time the iPhone 5C sales are horrible - pitiful - embarrassing - and yadda yadda.

And now what we are hearing is in May the iPhone 5C outsold the newly release Galaxy S5 - yes - you heard that right - the lowly 5C - the ugly red headed step child of the iPhone 5S that was released in September bested the Mighty powerful Galaxy S5 in its first full calendar month of release.

Impossible all the Android fan boys say - it can not be - if that was the case then Sammy would be reporting much lower than expected numbers - right.

I will not get into the details of Sammy's woes - I am too busy wallowing in their misery right now to dig for more details.

    users-switching-to-larger-screened-samsung-galaxy-s5

Ok - I am done Wallowing - Here are some details - for May the Galaxy S5 was only the third best-selling phone in the UK – behind Apple's iPhone 5S and 5C.

Actually The 5C was best-selling with 11.1% of all sales, the 5S next with 11%, said Kantar. The Galaxy S5 had 9%, and its year-old Galaxy S4 7.4%. The Moto G had 6% of all sales. Together those five handsets had 44.5% of all sales.

Again The month of May included the first full month of sales for Samsung's new flagship phone, which has a 5.1in screen - much larger than the 4in screens of the iPhone 5c and 5S.

So much for the whole world wanting a 5+ inch size screen - or that the 5C is a flop.

Because if it is flop then everything else is a disaster.

    Regards,

    Zachary S

Zach first check your settings in the podcasts app in the settings app - go to podcasts - and look for setting for download episodes - it should be turned off - sounds like for you it is turned on.  Default is to turn it off.

For any show you are having issues with in the Podcasts App

Go to My Podcasts - lower left - select the show - tap on the title - then on settings and look for the setting for Download Episodes - make sure it is turned off.  Also check on iTunes for podcasts to see what you have your settings at.

That should take care of your issues with the downloads.

Hi Rob – thanks for all of the entertaining shows. I just wanted to write in about the Maps app. I hadn’t used it in a long time, relying exclusively on Google Maps. I was pleasantly surprised, and I really like how well Apple Maps integrates with iOS. When navigating, if you press the sleep button to power down the screen, the Maps app takes over the lock screen, and at important points in the navigation it will automatically turn on showing you the map. At any point if you press the sleep / wake button, the Maps app shows your current position on the lock screen. I didn’t know about this, IMO, great feature and reason to use Apple Maps over any other solution. I wrote you because I bet I’m not the only one that hasn’t used the app recently.

    Regards,

    Darrin

Thanks Darrin for the feedback - I am an Apple Maps liker - I have for some time - I guess I have been lucky and it always worked very well for me and never close to as bad as others said - that said - many have stayed away - and as you mentioned it has gotten better - so folks if you have not done so recently - give Apple Maps another chance - pull it out of the folder where you hid it next to the newsstand app.

    Hi Rob,

I am beginning to experiment with some solutions for tracking your checked bags, and locating these.

I have done testing on just 1 trip so far with:

    http://www.thetileapp.com/

as well as Find my iPhone on a spare phone.

I found with the Tile hardware tag  and associated Tile iOS app you can typically see when or if your bag is loaded on the plane from your seat on board.  However, the audio sound on the Tile is quite low for a noisy baggage claim area, though you are able to hear it in very close range.

I found the sound on Find My iPhone is quite a bit louder and easier to spot.

There are a couple of other products I want to test with including the

    http://travelradar.awwapps.com/

which uses iBeacons, and 1-2 others from Amazon.

Before iPhones & Bluetooth I would often use a lower tech device like a wireless doorbell.  But these devices will help to consolidate the items I have to bring and also bring more location aware functionality.

I am going on a trip later this week and will test some of the other products.

I will likely do an audio recorded demo at some point.  But I wanted to just let you know for now, and see if you have any preliminary thoughts, experiences, things you’ve read about, etc.?

Thanks to Max P for this next one. Which is a kickstarter project because yeah we are at the point of the show.

This one is the Swich - spelled S W I C H - it is a wireless charger or as they say quote Swich is a sophisticated wireless charger for smartphones. A mobile accessory made from sustainable materials. unquote.

They had a goal of 25k - they are well over 40k now and have until Jul 29th at 10:21 PM before this is completed.

Essentially this is a wireless charging stand that will also rotate when your iPhone is on it so you can look at in portrait or landscape mode.

Pricing for this is $170 Ummm yeah.

Did I mention it is made with sustainable materials and it swivels and it is wireless charging.  And by wireless charging it means a case that you put your iPhone into that then powers the iPhone when charging.

And it is $170 which gets you that case and the charging base.

Search for SWICH - S W I C H at kickstarter dot com or in the show notes for ep 314

Hey and some maybe good news from the SOSCharger front - they said shipment of SOSChargers that were on the slow boat from China have arrived at the Port and are awaiting custom clearance.  And we should be getting our survey shortly. So unless they come back with the shipment was stollen - or set on fire or were exposed to water or the documentation was wrong and they were sent back excuse - I should be seeing my SOSCharger in a few weeks - maybe.

    https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/shuffle-smart-communications-app-so

    -everyone-can-connect-privately

We have an indie go go project to also mention and that is Shuffle - Essentially this is something that has been asked about a few time by listeners - and that is a way to have multiple phone numbers on your iPhone.

Where you can one number for each of your gumahs.

Ok - actually a really useful reason - not that having a different number for each gumah is not useful - but a useful and more morally acceptable reason for having another number is simply one for work calls and one for personal calls.

Or maybe you sell things on craigslist and don't want to give out your permanent number - this lets you create and assign an temporary or throw away numbers.

Privacy is the big thing they are pushing as a reason to use their service as well. Or as they say quote  In an effort to protect the privacy of individuals in the modern world where personal information can be harvested and abused in many different ways, Shuffle was created. unquote.  ok not the best grammar there.

And well there are plenty of not so morally just reasons for this service that I am sure the walter whites and Michael Sullivan's of the world could find appealing.

They also claim shuffle will offer free voice calls and text messages between shuffle users when on wifi.

Any way if you are looking for a 2nd, 3rd 4th or more phone number for your iPhone - that is what Shuffle is claiming to offer.

This just launched - it had raised $2k towards a goal of $35k.

The rewards are more like plaques - in that you get your name listed on their website and App - because yeah nothing says privacy like having your name listed on their website and someone looking to get a private phone number.  Yeah not getting that as a good hook.

    http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/jul/11/factory-wipe-

    on-android-phones-left-naked-selfie-photos-and-worse-researchers-find

From Matt S in Winston-Salem comes this next one about the gift that keeps on giving from Android - well Android devices prior to version 4. So if you are someone that has switched over the to light side and ditched an old Android phone this one will be of interest to you - especially if you were taking any naked selfies.  Which apparently is something Android owners must like to do A lot before they get rid of their phones.

Seems that researchers looking at used Android handsets that had been quote factory reset unquote actually found hundreds and hundreds of naked selfless and intimate pictures of both men and women.  They discovered this after looking at just 20 handsets for units the old owners thought were completely wiped free - the researchers were actually planning on looking at more than 20 handsets - but see naked selflies of Android owners are not quite the same as naked selfless of nubile 20 year old college girls that use iPhones.  Apparently the researchers were found huddled in a corner scratching at their corneas  and saying over and over 240 lb 50 year old men should not wear thongs 240 lb 50 year old men should not wear thongs.   Some things just can not be unseen.

Seems that when the photos were quote wiped unquote - what actually happened is it just deleted the index to the photos - leaving the photos in place.  Nice.

I do need to say one issue I found with this whole study is that if you owned an old Android phone and you had compromising photos - and you thought you wiped the photos - this issue comes when you sell that old Android phone and the new owner then goes in and could find the photos.  Or so that is how they presented it.

But I really don't see the issue here - it is not like anyone actually buys used android phones do they? - Used Android phones have almost no value left once you drive them off the lot.  So I guess we will call this one a theoretical issue -

but I guess if you did have an old Android phone you GAVE to a friend or relative and it had naked photos you thought you erased - Surprise Surprise - lets hope they don't read this article.

I have a couple of questions about iCloud storage space. I have an iCloud email and an Exchange one. Is it just the iCloud email account that counts towards iCloud storage space or does the exchange account count towards it as well?

Also with photos, is it just your individual and shared streams that count towards iCloud storage space or does the camera roll count towards it as well?

    Regards

    Steve in Brisbane

Hi Steve - Exchange email should not be in your iCloud email as far as I know - it should all be up on your exchange server.

Per iCloud storage for Photos - I believe that is just what you put in your photo stream - and not what is in your camera roll unless you have your camera roll set up to be in your photo stream - But on that last item I am less sure - anyone else set up on iCloud storage space and photos - please confirm on that one.  today in iOS at gmail dot com.  Thanks

    Hi Rob

In one of your earlier episodes you mentioned the fact that legacy bugs can propagate as you update to later iPhones via  backup of previous versions. I have had every iPhone since the 3G. There are some apps which never seem to restore and I have to replace them manually every time I restore. Thankfully, once I sign in the user information seems to update. I was thinking of starting with a completely fresh operating system and not back up from previous when I get the iPhone 6. My question is whether the various user data such as game progress etc. will be restored when I copy those applications over to my new phone. I have a feeling that I would lose a lot of this stuff. Probably only apps which require a specific sign in or attached to something like game Center would probably work the way I am hoping. For example, I have a simple app which I use to record my blood pressure. I don't have to log into that. My user information would probably not copy over.  If that is true, then it's not worth me starting completely fresh. It would take lots of work with the 100s of apps I have and only the minimal reward of a completely fresh account and operating system.

    What do you think?

    Regards,

    Mitch

    Winston-salem

Hi Mitch to check how an app would work - find an old iOS device an wipe it clean - do a full restore and put in the apps you are interested in most and see how they work - and that will answer your questions - different apps work different ways.  So you will not know until you try - if you don't have an old iOS device just set up the iPhone 6 as a stand alone device not from a backup and see how it works for you - if it is too much of a pain - then do a restore from one of your old backups.  You can always do the restore from back up later on if it is too much work.  It really depends on if your legacy issues are a bigger pain point then the starting over issues. I have not decided yet which is a bigger pain point for me to tell you the truth.  Guess I have about 2 months to make a decision.

    Hi Rob,

After I jailbroke my 5S 7.1.2 with Pangu I noticed something interesting. Several of my apps asked me again if they could use my location and send me push notifications after I opened them for the first time after jailbreaking. I never reinstalled these apps, which would usually explain why I would be asked again. I'm curious for a technical explanation of this.

    Regards,

    Terry

    Hey Rob!

Hope you had a great 4th of July!  I wanted to share my experience with jailbreaking my iPhone 5s and iPad Air running 7.1.2. I was previously jailbroken on 7.0.6, but I'm the type where if there's a new jailbreak available, I want it!  I ran into a few hiccups, but I was able to get it done after some trial and error. The first thing you want to do is update iTunes to the latest version. After you download the latest version of Pangu (1.1), extract the .exe (I used windows) somewhere, like on your desktop. Right click so you can run as administrator.  Be absolutely sure that you backup your phone or iPad before you do anything!!  After you do that, restore your iDevice using iTunes.  That will give you a fresh 7.1.2. There's no turning back now!  Feel free to close out iTunes.  No need to set up the phone with iTunes. Follow the on-screen steps to restore from iCloud backup. Once you've made it to your home screen, you don't need to wait for all your apps to re-download. Run Pangu 1.1 as administrator. Once it recognizes your iDevice, click "jailbreak".  It will have you manually change the date to June 1st. Once the process begins, you will most likely get a red error message saying "check caches failed ".

All you need to do is force restart your iDevice by holding the lock button and home button at the same time until the phone reboots.  I would re-launch Pangu too. Again, wait for it to be recognized and click "jailbreak ".  It shouldn't give you the error message this time. It should then tell you to click on the "Pangu" icon that was installed. Click and wait for the iDevice to start rebooting. The next step is CRITICAL. Once you see the Apple logo during the reboot, unplug the USB cable from the computer and plug it back in right away!  If you don't do this, you'll get a "jailbreak timed out" message, and you'll have to start over!  It took a while for me to figure that part out, so make sure you do it!  Assuming everything went well, you'll see Cydia!

I'm happy to report that most Cydia tweaks are working just fine. Winterboard isn't available yet. The tweaks I can't live without are working just fine, such as MyWi, Activator (even though it says it isn't supported, it does work), Springtomize, Virtual Home, Zeppelin, Alkaline, flux, Flip Control Center, etc.

I hope this tutorial was helpful!

And that is Apple is back with a new EBAY store to buy refurbished and unlocked iPhones - the iPhone 5 this time.

Pricing is $499 for the 64 GB iPhone 5 GSM version.

    $479 for 32gb

and $449 for the 16 GB - so well you are not to smart if you buy the 16 and 32 gb versions based on that pricing scale.

Actually I would say save your money the iPhone 6 is coming anyway.

But if you are a business or parent and looking for an unlocked GSM phone - this is a pretty good price - especially for the 64 GB version.

They will cut you off at 400 mb unless you have upgraded to the "top up" option, an expense.

ALSO, if you try to downgrade ANY service from FP be prepared for LONG waits on HOLD. You will be the last incoming call taken. I attempted for a total of 75 minutes last week at various times to cancel ONE of 3 accounts I have with them. These were MY precious mobile minutes used to simply HOLD. I tried different times of day, on different days.

Finally at 4:30 on Friday afternoon July 4th I got through to a fairly friendly tech support person who TRIED & TRIED tosell me on keeping the service (offering FREE megabytes if I would do this or that----all upgrades.) I had received a defective device and was pretty frustrated with FP. If you would just Let your audience know to BEWARE.  Other than that FP is OK.

    Thanks so much,

    Rob M

Thanks Jeff for the music and folks I will put the full song at the end of the episode.    I also want to thank GEOFF for sending in the Artwork for today's show.  GEOFF wrote the following.

Hi Rob. I created this artwork as your podcast quenches my thirst for IOS news. I made it with an app called 'Share Your Can' and tidied it up with 'Photo Eraser' and then cropped it. Hope you like it,

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote “The forthcoming (June 29th 2007) release of the Apple iPhone is going to be a bigger marketing flop than Ishtar and Waterworld combined. Because its designers forgot Platt’s First, Last, and Only Law of User Experience Design (“Know Thy User, for He Is Not Thee”), that product is going to crash in flames. Sell your Apple stock now, while the hype’s still hot. You heard it here first.”

    David S. Platt, Suckbusters!, 21 June 2007

That is still one of my favorite Pre iPhone launch quotes - I like to pull it out around the anniversary of the iPhone.  If you did sell your apple stock when David said to well I am sorry.  But if you did the opposite and purchased Apple stock at that time - $100,000 worth of Apple stock on June 21 2007 would have been worth $527,700 on June 29th 2014 - the 7 year anniversary of the iPhone launch.  Where as if you had $100,000 in the S&P 500 on June 21st 2007 - it would be worth just $130,173 on June 29th 2014.  Just Sayin.

Ok Last week I heard a rumor at the end of the week iOS 7.1.2 would come out and - well they were close - Apple choose to wait until Monday of this week to release it.

So Yes iOS 7.1.2 is available - Once again Remember Rob's rule for any updates.  Force quit all open apps - Go to Settings app and then General - Reset network settings.  After reboot - reconnect Wifi and then backup - sync - back up - the iOS device to your computer - then do the upgrade.    Yes - this is where two or three of you send me an email and say I did not do that and it went fine.  And you were lucky this time.  This is also where a couple of people say I did not do that and I wished I had.  And finally there are those that listen and have no issues at all - I am in that last group - I updated and followed my own advice and have not had any issues with the devices I updated.

Now I did hear from Max P who sent me a link to an article on iMore about some people having their iOS devices freeze during the update to iOS 7.1.2.  This happened to Max - The answer if this happens to you is to hold down the home button and the sleep/wake button and keep them held down until the screen turns off and then comes back on again with the Apple logo - you know a hard reset.  I did Ask Max if he followed my recommended update procedure - and he said ????????

    Hi Rob,

Nope. I am one of the ones that never follow your suggestion on this and never had a problem. Now I realized that maybe I should consider doing that next time.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

    Regards,

    Max P.

See it does pay to listen to me from time to time. Just sayin.

So what is new in this update - Security and bug fixes - Some of which are per bugs previously mentioned on the show where they could get access to the most previously used app.  From Apple.

    • Impact: A person with physical access to a locked device may be able to access the application that was in the foreground prior to locking
Description: A state management issue existed in the handling of the telephony state while in Airplane Mode. This issue was addressed through improved state management while in Airplane Mode.

What it means - that bug is squashed.

We also reported in the past about someone being able to get access to Mail Attachments again if they physically had the device that was on ep 306 - and it was the one where the Sad German Security expert put up a blog post about how Mail attachments were not encrypted - well that bug is squashed - no word if the German Security Expert is now Happy or not.  In Ep 306 we did say that likely would get patched in iOS 7.1.2.  Thanks Apple for making us look good.

There was also previously a report about being able to disable find my iPhone without entering an iCloud password.  while it was not easy to do and required have some knowledge - it was still possible and will that bug was squashed.

There was the bug where you could get siri to display all your contacts if you could get siri to display multiple contacts - also reported in the past on the show and also squashed.

I believe all the bugs previously mentioned on the show with regards to iOS 7.1.1 - were squashed.  I did go back and check - maybe I missed one - but from what I can see at least - it does seem like Apple did a lot of bug squashing this time around.

There is a link in the show notes for ep 313 at today in iOS dot com titled About the security content of iOS 7.1.2 - this is a link to Apples list of what was fixed in iOS 7.1.2.

There was a google+ post from Nick B which said - Just updated my iPad Air to 7.1.2 and now the podcast app crashes. It will open for a few seconds then crash to the home screen. Tried a reset network settings etc. No fix. Read forums that it crashes in iOS 8 beta's also and for some users in iOS 7.1.2.

    Anyone else getting this happening?

And Billy W, Robert F also commented they were having the same thing happening and guess what so did I today.  What I did to fix - was forced quit all open apps - went to settings - general - reset - reset network settings - then after the reboot - I logged back into my wifi - and launched the podcasts app and all worked well - I also canceled the downloads in progress - I noticed it was trying to download two files when the issue happened - then I went and one by one downloaded the files It was downloading and that worked out for me.

As with all updates even double dot updates - don't be the first to download it if you don't like when things go wrong and if you are not having any issues - always good to give new updates a week or two before installing.

    http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/06/30/apple-testing-two-step-

    verification-for-icloudcom

Thanks Tim G for the heads up on this next one - which is well about potentially more security Apple is providing or about to provide for its users and ecosystem.

And what is this you ask - well it is two-step verification for iCloud web apps. According to Apple insider quote Apple is expanding its two-step authentication security feature beyond Apple ID management and iCloud-connected features to the iCloud.com Web app suite. Prior to the change, iCloud.com was accessible via a simple password.  unquote

Apple insider said they were apple to confirm this new iCloud security feature is indeed Apples normal two-factor authentication service.  However they said it was unclear if it was in testing or nearing a rollout.  Some Apple ID accounts they tested required the second verification while others did not.

No official word I could find on this from Apple.

    http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2014/06/26Apple-Brings-

    Vibrant-Colors-iSight-Camera-to-Most-Affordable-iPod-touch-Model.html

Sticking with the Apple news from Apple theme -  on the 26th of June Apple announced in the 3rd person quote Apple brings Vibrant colors & iSight Camera to most affordable iPod touch model.  unquote - link to full article in show notes - but a very quick summary - Well Apple killed off the lower end last gen iPod touch - and now all iPod touches are the latest gen.  16, 32 and 64 GB storage is the only differences between the devices - if you don't count the color differences.  Pricing is $199 for 16GB, $249 for 32 GB and $299 for 64 GB.  Interesting that apple just went to a $50 dollar increment for differences in storage - traditionally it was $100.  And by Traditionally I mean right now for every other iOS device except the iPod Touch.  iPad Mini Retina - $399 for 16GB - $499 for 32 GB and $599 for 64 GB.  HMMMM why is memory so much cheaper for the iPod Touch.  Same differences again for every other iOS device except for the iPod Touch.

To me this new pricing structure of $50 between levels of storage is the biggest potential news for future pricing of new iPhones and iPads in the fall.  I think it will be hard for Apple to stay with their $100 increments for those products now.

Also Apple started a back to school promotion where you get a $50 gift card when you buy an iPad or iPhone - Per the fine print  Purchases must be made from the U.S. Apple Online Store for Education Individuals, or from a U.S. Apple Retail Store, or by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE from July 1, 2014, through September 9, 2014. Purchaser must be eligible for Apple Education Individual Pricing.

So you also get the education discount as well - if you know qualify for it.  Or if the girl that babysits your kids qualifies or your niece or nephew qualifies.  Or that kid you buy the beer-verages for that cuts your lawn qualifies - ok - that last one would be wrong - I mean unless you were getting a mac book Pro and cinema display.

    http://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/apple-tv-adds-aol-

    espn-miramax-series-and-movies/#!6IYZN

Ok last item with iPod touch news and this next one is Apple TV news.  Yeah baby - we are covering the full spectrum of iOS devices today - and Yes - Apple TV is an iOS device.

Last Week Apple added an App store for Apple TV - oh wait - never mind - that was a dream I was having.

Ok What Apple did do last week with regards to Apple TV was add four more tiles - or channels or lets optimistically call them 4 more Apps.  These new apps include - ABC News - This will allow you access to a lot of current news story with some additional related news stories as well as access to 50 years worth of archives - which includes this week in history - which hey is updated you guessed it weekly.  If you are in NYC, LA, Chicago, Philly, San Fran, Houston, Fresno, Raleigh and Milwaukee??  you will also get your local news.  All access to content on this App is free.

The second App added is the AOL ON app which brings a bunch of video content as in over 900,000 videos - of which less than half involves cats.  These are mostly short clips from AOL and AOL partners like Huff Post, TechCrunch, ESPN and the New York times.  Supposedly there is some long form original content coming and again this is all free content as well.

The 3rd App is the PBS Kids channel - This is actually the one I as a parent thought was the best.  According to PBS quote PBS KIDS programming on Apple TV includes thousands of videos, with new content updated weekly.. Users can access episodes and clips from favorite series such as CURIOUS GEORGE, DINOSAUR TRAIN, PEG + CAT, DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD, ARTHUR, WILD KRATTS and SESAME STREET. Apple TV viewers can watch this content for free and personalize their PBS KIDS experience by creating a profile and identifying their local PBS station. unquote

I did not see anything about Kaiu or Cat in the Hat.

And the 4th App - well it is a sticky Wicket of an App.  It is the Willow TV App.

Ok that was a bad use of the term Sticky Wicket - of which the definition according wiki pedia is quote The phrase comes from the game of cricket. The pitch in cricket is also known as "the wicket" (According to the Laws of Cricket, this usage is incorrect, but it is in common usage and commonly understood by cricket followers). It can be affected by rain and the sun, causing the ball to bounce unpredictably: a pitch which had been wet would become increasingly difficult to bat on, as it dried out. Such a pitch was referred to as a "sticky wicket" for a batsman because the ball's bounces are unpredictable. unquote.

Well if you ever used that phrase but never watched a cricket match - now is your chance to rectify that situation. Yup Willow TV is all Cricket all the time.  Somewhere someone listening had a poster of Imran Khan or Brian Lara up on their wall as a teenager and is going Oh Yeah my Apple TV is finally complete.  Hey no offense to the Muthiah Muralitharan or Sunil Yoshi fans out there.  Oh and if you are a fan of Sir Don Bradman - well chances are you you still have flip phone.  Not to take anything away from Sir Don.

Into the email bag we go.

    Hi Rob!

I signed up for Lynda.com Sunday & spent 6 hours watching videos!!!  I can't begin to tell you how this has changed my life!  I learned more in those 6 hours than I did in my entire six yrs of college!!!

    I'm Hooked!

    Regards,

    Laurie B

    Frisco, TX

Laurie thanks for that feedback and also Thanks again to lynda for sponsoring this episode - if you go to lynda dot com slash tii - that is l y n d a dot com slash tii - you will get a free 7 day trial to their service.  They offer over 2,000 high quality video courses taught by industry experts.

These courses cover subjects including Business Skills like SEO, Viral Marketing, Content Marketing and Negotiating,  There are Software video courses covering MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite and Final Cut Pro,  And of course there are iOS App development courses - There are over 25 iOS Courses available at Lynda.com

If you are in the business world - one of the essential ways to move up is how well you do giving presentations.  That is just a fact of corporate culture.  I remember back in the late 90's  Bringing home the projector from work and putting my presentation up on the wall and practicing in front of my wife - me and a few friends would share what we learned about powerpoint.  One guy liam griffin had the best presentations and we would take them and dissect them. There was no Lynda to rely on back then.  But today there is and Lynda has a bunch of video tutorials just on presentations - there is Keynote 6 from outline to Presentation plus  Presentation Fundamentals plus Powerpoint Builds, transitions, animations and effects. plus Up and Running with webex Meetings - which I need to check out, And business storytelling with my good Friend CC Chapman.  Plus over 40 others - if you want to get ahead at your business you owe to yourself to check out these tutorials.  By Like Laurie B - and change your life.  Oh And Per Liam Griffin that I just mentioned - Today he is the Executive VP and Corporate General Manager at Skyworks and in 2013 his total compensation was north of $2 Million dollars - yes being really good at Presentations is really really good for your career.

Lynda is an all you can eat monthly service - Watch anytime and as often as you like from your computer or iOS device.  There are Searchable Transcripts as well as closed-captioned transcripts.

And you don't need to take my word for the breadth and quality of their tutorials and service - you can check them out right now for yourself for free for 7 days by going to lynda dot com slash tii that is

    VOICEMAIL MESSAGE - Joe_CA_Cellular_data_and_wifi

Hi Rob. You probably covered this in previous episodes, but at my age you don't remember as good as you used to. Is there a way of locking the orientation when you're in the maps program?

    Thanks, Scott in Milwaukee

Hi Scott - First up there are two different types of Orientation lock - there is the one available for iPads.  This allows you to use the mute button to be the orientation lock button.  Which lets you lock it in either Landscape or Portrait mode. You do this via the general settings - there is an option there just for iPads right below Multitasking - Use Side switch to:  One option is Lock Rotation the other is to mute the device.  On iPhones and iPod touches running iOS 7 - this option is not there.

For iPhones and iPod touches - there is a software orientation lock - but it is only for locking it in portrait mode. To activate this on an iOS 7.x device swipe up from the bottom of the screen - in the top row of icons on the right is the activation lock.  tap it and it locks the device into Portrait mode.

If you have an iOS device running iOS 6 - double tap on the home button and swipe right - and you will see the option to lock the orientation.  But sadly again it will only lock it in the Portrait orientation.  There is no way to lock it in landscape mode in iOS 6 or 7 for an iPhone or iPod touch.

And Scott - I don't know if we ever covered it in that much detail -so thanks for the question.  Honestly - I thought you could lock the iPhone in landscape mode - but that apparently is not the case.

Hi. My name is Shandy.  I'm going to rant about a new VoiceOver feature that will be coming in iOS 8. Now, this is a great feature that I, personally, have  been looking forward to for years. I'm talking about the Alex voice coming to iOS 8. I am really happy and really angry and depressed about this, all at the same time. Let me explain. I am a totally blind Mac user. I've been using the Mac for the past four years, and I don't use any other text-to-speech voice besides Alex when I use VoiceOver. Alex is my favorite. This may sound crazy, but I listen to Alex sometimes the way I listen to music. I love this Text to speech  voice so much. It's the best I've ever heard in my life, and believe me, I've heard a lot of text-to-speech. Absolutely nothing compares to Alex. So, you can imagine how excited I was when I found out that Alex was coming to iOS. In fact, the Alex voice is one of the main reasons why I really wanted to upgrade to iOS 8, as soon as I can. Well, a few days after WWDC ended, I found out, sadly, that Alex will only run on the iPhone 5S and later, and I'm really upset about this because the latest model iPhone I have is a 4S. My iPhone 4S works great, so I don't really need a 5S. Do I? After all, my mom always tells me that, if you just want something but don't really need it, you should not try to get it.But, I want the Alex voice so badly in my iOS installation, and the only way that's going to happen is if I get an iPhone 5S. I've been trying to talk myself out of asking Mom to get me a 5S for the passt couple of days, and it's not working! I can't believe I have to get a new iPhone just for the new text-to-speech voice! It isn't fair, especially since Alex runs just fine on my old Mac book from late 2009. Why can't it run on an iPhone 4S? I just don't understand! The only thing that makes me feel a little better is that my two-year contract for my 4S expires this September, right around the time iOS 8 is coming out. Still, it'll be really hard to convince Mom to get me a new iPhone just so I can enjoy the Alex voice, especially since I already use it on my computer all the time. Anyway, that's my rant.

    Regards

    Shandy W.

Well Shandy - I would say come October - you may be able to sell your iPhone 4S - and then buy a used 5S for not that much more.  If the iPhone 6 is half what it is rumored to be - there will be a bunch of people breaking contracts to upgrade early and then looking to sell their old 5S.  Hang in there - September is closer then you think.

We are now well over 900 members in our Google+ community and growing.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One post in the G+ community this past week came from -

Stephen williams and he was simply asking what is the maximum distance between 2 devices that airdrop will work.  And since it uses wifi and bluetooth as noted in the responses it is limited to about 30 feet or 10 meters.  Seems if you use meters to measure you get a few extra feet.  Really the limit on the range is the bluetooth part - again it does require both Bluetooth and wifi to work - essentially the devices need bluetooth to connect securely and wifi to do the heavy lifting of file transfer.

There were quite a few conversations about the latest jailbreak - which we will get to at the end of the episode.

    - This past week there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Ok - Well usually the most civil - last week I booted someone for not being civil - but it is definitely the best moderated G+ community when it comes to iOS

Folks Go to today in iOS dot com slash community to join in.

    Hi Rob,

Saw this at the Irvine, CA. Costco today. Nice to see Apple and Costco working together again. Costco also had Beats headphones discounted to $199.

    Best,

    Greg in L.A.

THanks to all that sent in this one - which us about Apple being back at Costco after a long absence.  So now when you are buying your 3 pound back of pistachios or your 5 pound bag of dried cherry's.  You can also pick up an iPad - which right now they have some discounted prices.  Some of the tablets are up to $100 off - but you will need to check with your local costco to see what versions and deals they have - seems quantities are limited as are the options.

    http://9to5mac.com/2014/06/22/foxconn-reportedly-hiring-

    100000-new-workers-to-assist-with-iphone-6-production/

Almost a rumor - more common sense or just a yearly ritual.  Seems Foxconn is reportedly hiring new workers to assist with the next gen iPhone build.  Shocker.

This time FoxConn is reportedly hiring 100,000 new workers.  Pegatron is also reported to be ramping up their hiring of new workers as they too are supposed to be getting up to 30% of the new iPhone build orders.

I guess I would just say - if this rumor was not circulating at this time I would be concerned - that it is circulating seems like just par for the course. Or maybe one under par.

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-06-24/apple-s-big-iphones-

    said-to-start-production-next-month.html

Ok - so if we accept that Foxconn is now ramping up production of the next gen iPhone - which if it is launching in September they definitely would need to be doing now.

What is it likely that they are building.

Well rumors are pretty much consolidating around two different versions - a 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch version.

Most rumors have it being a little thinner and a little more rounded on the corners and edges.

There are also now photos of what is supposed to be the 5.5 inch display coming from Sonny Dickson - who in the past had other samples that proved to be the real deal.

The other thing the rumors are agreeing on is that the sleep wake button has been moved from the top to the side.

There is the rumor that the screens will be sapphire - well some say it will be both - some say it will be the 4.7 inch version only - some say the 5.5 inch version only.

There are other rumors about higher resolution displays for both, Improved chipsets - kind of a given.  A new barometer - mentioned on the last show.  And just a single flash replacing the dual flash used for true-tone - but likely still a true tone flash.

But one thing I have not seen in any rumors - not a single one is the introduction of a new iPhone at 4 inches - the current size screen.

I believe there will be a new iPhone at 4 inches sporting the A8 chip - which is likely what will be the new processor for the iPhone.  I don't see the 4 inch size being completely given up on.

    limit-128gb-iphone-6-option-to-55-inch-model

How about if Apple releases 3 versions a

4, 4.7 and 5.5 inch and prices all three the same.

    Huh you say.

Well Think about this - getting all the electronics into the smaller package makes it harder to design and layout for manufacturability - a 5.5 inch device is likely to cost much less to manufacture then a 4 inch device - but will have a slightly higher  material cost due to the larger screen and battery - but over all it could be a wash between the 4 inch and 5.5 inch in total cost when you look at everything from design to testing to manufacturing costs to bill of materials and to yield.

That would be really interesting if they did that - and then only made the 5.5 inch version with the 128 gb capacity.

    hmmmm

Ok - wait this is Apple - of course they will raise the prices for the larger units. What was I thinking.  But there may only be $50 increments in price differences as we saw with the update iPod touch line.

    To the email bag.

    Hi Rob,

Do you think apple will get away from a "budget" iPhone 5C and just use older models as the lower cost options?

    Regards,

    Michael

It is possible What apple could do is kill off the iPhone 4S - kind of a given - and kill off the 5S - and then make an upgrade to the 5C to maybe be the 6C - and put in the A7 processor.  And that becomes your only 4 inch device.  With the iPhone 6 and 6+ being the 4.7 and 5.5 inch devices.  Of course that is not what I expect - I do expect as just mentioned - 3 sizes of the latest iPhone running the A8.  But wanted to throw out another scenario so I could cherry pick that alternative in September and say look I nailed it.  Oh wait never mind I don't write for BGR.

But it is possible that the 5C just lives on as is - and becomes the low cost device with absolutely no change at all - and the more I think about it - that to me seems like the most likely scenario.

Maybe the line up will be 5C 16GB lowest cost - Zero dollar subsidized, 5S 16 GB - mid price point - $99 subsidized, 4.7 inch 16GB low end storage and the traditionally standard price point - $199 subsidized ,  And 5.5 inch with 32 GB low end storage  at $249 subsidized.

I would expect a lot of the rumors over the next two months to start to focus on the pricing aspect - as on the technical side the rumors all seem to have come together and there is not much else new to say there.

    http://mashable.com/2014/06/21/iwatch-nba-stars/

Thanks to Dr. John for this next one. And that is the other place we should expect to see the rumors heating up on for the next couple of months and that is the iWatch.

There was a post on Mashable saying the Apple is testing the rumored iWatch with NBA star Kobe Bryant who would be one of several Pro athletes to test mythical iWatch.

They are reportedly working with some top athletes from the MLB, NHL, NBA.  They did not say anything about Cricket for some reason.  hmmm.  They also speculate Kobe Bryant was picked because of his relationship with nike and also his high popularity in China.  But in that case why not just work with Long Ma or Zhendong Fan or on the women's side - Ning Ding.

No photos by the paparazzi to back any of this up at this time - but there is a report Kobe Bryant was spotted on Apples campus last month where he supposedly met with Johnny Ive.

Hard to say if this backs up the rumor or is what caused the rumors creation in the first place.  It is just possible Kobe is an Apple fan boy and Ive is a Kobe fan boy and they just were meeting to say hi.

Thanks to Brent for this next one. Which is about YAMSFWA - Yet another major security flaw with Android.  This time it has to do with the Android google play store.  And quote there appears to be a fundamental flaw in the play stores infrastructure that leaves users potentially vulnerable to having their passwords and personal credentials logged without explicit consent unquote.  Or put another way - if this was happening on iOS - would have been the lead story on the local and national news. Just sayin.

No granted this is an exploit discovered by a Professor and PHD student - and no proof anyone nefarious types are taking advantage of this unknown and luckily very hidden secret.  Yup nothing to worry about here on the Android side.

And what Marshall is referring to is a new Trojan horse for Android called Android.hehe -  which was found by FireEye Labs and also reported on by symantec - quote Android.Hehe is a Trojan horse for Android devices that blocks incoming calls and SMS messages from specific numbers. The Trojan also steals information from the compromised device.

Hi Rob every time I try and tweet something from the Tii App I get a pop up with the message:

The tweet - Yada Yada cannot be sent because the connection to twitter failed.

I have deleted the app and put the twitter app back on my iPhone and this Msg is still popping up what am I doing wrong.

    Regards,

I sent Shared the following - Hi Sharde,

Are you logged into to Twitter on your iOS device.

Go to the settings app - then scroll down to twitter - and tap it and see if you have your twitter account info entered.

    Regards Rob

    She replied - Hi Rob,

ok I see now I did not put my password in the settings area for the twitter app thats preinstalled on my iPhone thanks rob its working now

So folks if you ever have an issue with any app sending a tweet - you need to make sure you are logged in at the Settings level for twitter and also Facebook for that matter.

    Hi Rob,

I thought Safari now provided unlimited browsing after initially being restricted to nine pages open, but this morning it refused to allow a 25th open page. Yes, I admit I need to be more organized - I am about to work my way through them all, I promise - but was I wrong to think unlimited browsing was on the cards?

    Hi Rob

One thing I hope iOS 8 will address is the continual annoyance of getting a popup saying "cellular data is off for an app" when you access the app in question. If you have turned it off, you shouldn't have to be reminded that you have done so. The workaround in the meantime is, say if this happens when you access the notes app, turn on cellular data for notes specifically, but turn off the main cellular data button at the top of the screen. This will mean the popup is disabled and you can access notes without it appearing. Hope that helps.

    Regards

    Steve in Brisbane

    Hi Rob,

Do you have tips to save data on a iPhone or iPad because I all ways go over my data

    Sincerely Zachary S

Hi Zachary - thanks for the email.  First thing to do is go into the settings app - Then tap of cellular - then scroll down to Use Cellular Data for:

And turn off every app that makes no sense or you could care less about allowing to have access to data - many of these apps only have access to data to deliver you ads.  Like Angry birds or candy crush or well you get the picture.  Restricting the apps you let get access to cellular data is important - then look at those remaining and see which ones are you biggest data hogs.  And then turn them off too.  You can always turn them on again later - but by turning off your biggest data hogs - you will at least be able to decide later on do you really need to watch that video on ESPN right now or can you wait until you have wifi and so on.

    meter-charge-your-smartphone-92-faster?ref=email

Previously I pledged on the Legion Meter - that is the multimeter for your iOS charger.  Well good news - I just got my survey from kickstarter - that is where they ask for your address - usually this is not done until right before they are getting ready to ship - which seems odd at the end of June for an October shipment - but maybe they have these done early.  That would be a shocker and not something I am used to with kickstarter.

Their kickstarter page still shows October for delivery.

Sadly my SOS Charger has gone completely dark - the last word from them was the Chargers were done and getting ready to be shipped via ocean freight - or put another way literally on a slow boat from China.  That was on May 29th - no word since then.  Ok - I did look it up and it is 29 to 35 days on average for transit time from China to most locations in the US.  And it take up to a week for your cargo to be loaded and another week for it to be cleared at the destination port.  So we are looking at end of Middle of July end of July before they have product.  Yeah - don't think I will be seeing it before my next conference in Mid august - drat.

Previously on the show we mentioned the iFind tag Kickstarter project part of what I said on Episode 310 when I featured is was quote Per how it works - they claim it recycles electromagnetic energy and stores it in a unique power bank.  It has a 200 ft - 60 Meter detection range and loud alarm.

Will be interesting to see if this one works as advertised.  To be honest the fact that tags previously did require batteries is a big reason I was not a fan of tags.  But this one has me rather interested.  I am almost willing to plunk down $30 to get two just to see if this is as good as advertised.   unquote.

Well Keven J was one of those that did actually pledge for it and on June 26th he received an email that said the following

    quote:

This is a message from Kickstarter’s Trust & Safety team. We’re writing to notify you that the iFind - The World's First Battery-Free Item Locating Tag project has been suspended, and your $120.00 USD pledge has been canceled. A review of the project uncovered evidence of one or more violations of Kickstarter's rules, which include:

    • A related party posing as an independent, supportive party in project comments or elsewhere
    • Misrepresenting support by pledging to your own project
    • Misrepresenting or failing to disclose relevant facts about the project or its creator
    • Providing inaccurate or incomplete user information to Kickstarter or one of our partners

Accordingly, all funding has been stopped and backers will not be charged for their pledges. No further action is required on your part.

    unquote

Ummm well I guess we will not get to see how it works after all.

At the time they killed it - there was over half a million dollars in pledges from almost 10,000 people.  The comments thread on kickstarter is best enjoys with popcorn.

    From Mike R

Is anyone like me and your jaw drop at the price of $200 headphones?

I found some for $50 that I like and others might too.

They are made by or sold by "MobileSpec" called "studio" model MS51BK for black. They have a inline mic for answering calls with a push button but no volume control. Of course dual ear headphones are not legal for driving and these do a pretty good job of background noise isolation. They sit on your ears not around but are comftorable for at least a couple hours. 48mm drivers. 10hz to 20,000 hz frequency response. Bass response sounds good to me and that's what sold me.

Sold at most truck stops in the USA and amazon. Most truck stops have a demo display to listen with your iPhone.

I'll be getting a second pair. There are two models on display, these for $50 and another for $10 less.

    Hi Rob,

I was curious, with how easy it is to access tethering from your iPhone on a mac, does that also work with iPad? I'm currently considering switching to sprints unlimited plan and it comes with 5 GB of tethering for my iPad, but since I'm not a developer, I don't have access to the betas.

    Thanks for the show,

Hi Rob, I was thinking about jail breaking my iphone 5 but I don't know much about it. I was wondering what are the cons of jail breaking? Would the security of my info be at risk while jail broken? Can I still use icloud with my Mac? I use online banking, can I still do that safely while jail broken? And lastly can you give me a link of how I can jail break it?

    Hi Rob,

Just wondering what you think of the new jailbreak Pangu?

    Regards,

    Levi M

    xx:xx

    http://9to5mac.com/2014/06/23/pangu-untethered-ios-

    7-1-x-jailbreak-released-but-proceed-with-caution/

Ok - First I was right and wrong when it came to a jailbreak for iOS 7.1.1 - I said I did not see the jailbreak dev team releasing a new one for 7.1.1 - and well they did not - but there was one released.  This comes from Pangu in China.   And not only does it work for 7.1.1 - it also still works for 7.1.2

Ok - first since this came from China - there were many skeptical and scared about the validity or safety of the jailbreak.

Because you know all those other jailbreaks by other hackers not in China were so safe with no possible chance of anything going wrong.  All Jailbreak devs are hackers which means they break rules - which is not a bad thing - but also not the most secure thing.  no jailbreak was done by Apple - and jailbreaking means you are reducing the security of your device.  But you know you can always trust a guy with a pinapple on his head.

Ok - that all said - when the Pangu Jailbreak first launched they did offer by default a piracy app store along with Cydia - that was not cool - and that is what gives jailbreaking a bad name.

That said - PanGu 1.1 is now available and for the English version at least only Cydia will be installed by default.  It works with iOS 7.1, 7.1.1 and 7.1.2

One thing they also did with Pangu 1.1 - is they changed some of the code they were using - seems they had lifted or borrowed some code from @iOn1c - and he was not happy.

One of the things Pangu does do to make the jailbreak possible is it uses expired enterprise certs and as MuscleNerd from the Devteam said - they don't do that because of legal issues.

Stefan Esser who is iOn1c - said Pangu's jailbreak technique might be a bigger deal later on as it uses quote many secret vulnerabilities unquote.  Also from Esser - quote “The Pangu jailbreak does not only use one info leak bug but several from my training. And there is basically my code linked directly into it, unquote

On top of all that Pangu 1.1 stopped using Essers code and used some new code - which means that might be two different vulnerabilities the Pangu team made Apple aware of and now has time to fix / patch before iOS 8 is launched.

So while this does mean right here - right now - you can jailbreak your iOS 7.1.2 iOS device - it may mean your iOS 8 device will not be jailbroken - not for a while after it launches at least and could take longer than even the iOS 7 jailbreak took.  And that is bad news for all interested in jailbreaking.

All of that said - what is the verdict on the street about whether this jailbreak is safe?

It seems to be a consensus feeling from those that are technical that have gone over this - that there is nothing malicious with regards to what it could do to you the end user.

Does that 100% mean it is safe - HECK NO.  And if you use your iOS device for work and have sensitive info on your iOS device that if you divulged you would loose your job - or cost your company lots of money or embarrassment - yes this jailbreak or any jailbreak for that matter is not for you.

Should you jailbreak right now - I would say wait until the next episode - which will likely not be for about two week - I am taking a week off as I travel to NY.

I say wait - just because well it works with iOS 7.1.2 - and the long 4th of july weekend will give more people to dive into the code more and re-confirm nothing bad is going on.

Again from what I read - it does seem safe.  I will not be jailbreaking until I get back from NY.  Just don't want to before traveling.

I will not put up a tutorial for some time on this.  But there is a link in the show notes:

Here is some early feedback on Pangu from listeners.

    Hey Rob,

So I restored from iOS 8 beta 2 to 7.1.1 and jailbroke my phone using pangu. Seems to work without a hitch. Cydia is changed buttons have moved. My fav app virtual button on 5s still works.

    Regards,

    Dev

Well I bit the bullet and did the Pangu JB on my iPad mini

I followed the instructions and the jailbreak was successful.

    Currently restoring Apps.

At one point my AVG anti- Virus did pickup up a Trojan Virus associated with Pangu Jailbreak. The Pangu tool itself.

going thru the App update for 7.1.1. Thats working as I type. Cydia did the basics at start. But many of my tweaks are not currently compatible with 7.1.1. Must wait for JB developers to update them.

If your still happy with your previous JB. You might want to stick with it awhile longer. Not sure yet if I regret the new JB. Still many iOS 7 Apps can be updated.

I just finished Jailbreaking both my iPhone 5 and iPad mini retina. Jailbreak went very smooth and it's so nice not having random spring board crashes. Even Siri sounds sexy lol. Got 90 of tweaks back on only a few I found shoot the devices into safe mode. The Jailbreak itself was a breeze.

    Hi Rob,

I've been having a frustrating battle with my iPad 3rd gen. over  the last few months. (On iOS 7.0.4) The spring board kept crashing when I used multitask mode. I was excited to hear about the jailbreak release and decided to take a chance. I backed up then updated my iPad 3rd gen. to iOS 7.1.1 (via DFU mode). I also updated iTunes (this is a must). Then downloaded the jailbreak and with a few easy steps I was jail broken. So far over the past 3 days I've had no issues and this solved my CRASHING springboard issue!! I have however noticed that many of the Cydia tweaks are not updated yet. (Activator)

    Just giving my two cents..

    Regards,

    Justin

At this point I have not heard any negative stories about this jailbreak.  But as Chris points out if you are happy with your current jailbreak and not having any issues - no real reason to upgrade at this point.

Lets see where we are when Ep 314 comes out.  Obviously some of you will be jailbreaking before them - please send you feed back to today in iOS At gmail dot com or better yet call it in - a little lite on the voice mail feedback lately.  Give us a call - 206 666 6364 thats 206 moon dog.

I wanted to give a review of my new Photon Hot Spot device from Freedompop.  After taking a look at their website, without making a purchase, Freedompop sent me an email offer to get a free Photon hotspot device plus 500 free MB of data, all I had to pay was 9.99 for activation, plus try their premier service for one month (cancel at any time).  So I did, and it was shipped free of charge within 5 business days.  The Photon is a tiny flat square and very light.  It came with a USB cord to charge it.  I have to say this 4G hotspot works great, as I have been using it flawlessly everywhere I traveled within Northern NJ and Metro NY.   I use it mostly with my Verizon Retina iPad Mini 4G and it works as well as Verizon's 4G Prepaid service.  Also, I downloaded Freedompop's free app onto my iPhone 4s and they gave me an additional 200MB of data for the first month. After about 20 days I called customer service to cancel the premier trial, because I'm not ready to do it as of yet, and within 5 minutes the customer service person canceled the service without a hassle.  I was not expected that.  So far Freedompop does what they say and I highly recommend trying their products and services.

    Thanks

    Dave O

Thanks Dave - and Dave is a long time listener sending in emails for the past 3+ years - so no he is not a FreedomPop plant.  And well I will be giving my Freedom Pop a work out this next week when I travel to NY - will be interesting to see how it does at the airports between flights.

    Hi Rob,

Do you think now with Amazon launching their new phone they might bring podcasts into their store?  It's not iOS but it would be kinda cool that they are better than google?

    Cheers

    Craig

Ok - It is not iOS - but it is podcasting and well - to answer your question - I hope so - because Android is vast waste land of lost opportunity for podcasters. If I have said this a twice I have said it a 100 times - Google is not a podcasters friend - the ratio of Podcasts download for iOS vs Android in May - over 6 to 1 in favor of iOS.  Android needs some help and Amazon might be the one to do that - they at least with Audible has some incentive - after all what is the best advertising platform for Audible - Podcasts.  So who knows Craig but in my Utopian future - Yes there is a native podcatching app on Android devices.  But right now Android is really just a distopian waste land - something Officer Rockatansky would feel at home in. +5 pts if you got that reference with out googling it.

Hey Rob, am I the only one having major problems with the last podcast app update?  First it crashed continually, then after bringing a fresh copy from the cloud it's insisting on downloading EVERY subscribed podcast I'm signed up for. I finally had to remove it all together. Are there any solutions for the original app?

    Steve R

Remember - the Podcasts app really really needs the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer - even is you are not directly sync'g with iTunes on your computer - there seems to be interaction between your podcasts list on your computer and the podcasts app even via just iCloud - and in all cases when I heard of the podcasts app crashing and burning after the last update - once the person updated iTunes on their computer - then the podcasts app worked fine.  So again make sure you update iTunes on your computer if you plan to update the podcasts app on your iOS device.
