In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote I can’t imagine anyone under the age of 30 wanting an iPad. A PS3, Wii, GameBoy, or even a useful laptop maybe, but an iPad? Furthermore, I do not recall ever seeing anyone under 30 actually using an iPad.” UNQUOTE
John C. Dvorak, PC Mag, 13 December 2010
I guess the real question is if John C Dvorak had seen anyone under the age of 30 at all since the iPad was released. Because it seems he was way out of touch with that age group. And now pretty much every kid I know uses an iPad.

http://www.iphonehacks.com/2014/08/ios-8-beta-5-whats-new.html
This weekend I could not find a good story for the lead - and then Apple released iOS 8 Beta 5 - thanks Apple. The 5th beta traditionally is the one where all is close and it is stable enough to say anyone with a dev account should check it out.
Most of the changes this time from what I have seen so far are very minor.
Like on the keyboard - if you tap and hold on the emoji icon - it pops up a choice for Predictive keyboard to toggle it off. Again Not sure why you would want to toggle it off - but if it is off - you can now toggle it back on via this option. Actually you can turn it on or off here before - it just was not a virtual toggle button.
Brightness control was removed from Wallpaper settings - if you remember in Beta 4 brightness control was moved out as its own menu item in Settings - but had remain duplicated still in Wallpaper settings - now it is just in the Settings main list.
Access to Spotlight was improved when swiping down to speed up the transition. It actually felt too sped up for me - maybe they will slow it down a bit in Beta 6.
With Beta 5 if you are on a carrier that supports the new Wifi calling feature - instead of just saying your carrier at the top it will say your carrier and Wi-Fi - so with T-mobile in the US which is supporting this now in text it says T-Mobile Wi-Fi in between the signal straight for cellular and signal strength for Wifi indicators.
Wonder how long before I see it say AT&T Wi-Fi - ok I jest - Yeah AT&T supporting this feature is not something I expect any time soon or at least not until at least everyone else supports it.
In the health App you can now have your medical info included on your lock screen. Such as adding in your Medical Conditions or Allergies and can add in emergency contact info and even blood type. So if you are someone that has a rare blood type or life threatening reaction to medicines - you can add that in and if in an accident those responding will have some extra info that could help save your life. You can also put in your height and weight and if you are an organ donor. I am guessing if the first responders need to look at the app to figure out how tall your were - then knowing about the organ donor info will come in handy.
Actually I saw this option for Emergency contact info was actually available in Beta 4 as well - but hey it is new to me and the show. And to say the info is on your lock screen is not entirely true - to get to it from your lock screen swipe for the passcode screen and tap on Emergency in the lower left - then tap on Medical ID also in the lower left - then you info shows - I have mine set up to show my wife's phone number as my emergency contact - blood type and that I am an organ donor. Well along with the aforementioned Weight and height info that I hope no one ever needs to use. Please note if someone finds or steals your phone they will be able to call whomever you select as your emergency contact - as it should be. But note if you ever find a lost iPhone - now you can go there - find the emergency contact info call it and say you found the iPhone.
With Beta 5 the iPhone now asks if you want to allow other devices to use your phone number for SMS Relay.
There is now an option for iCloud photo storage where you can keep the low res versions of a photo or video on your iOS device and put the high res originals in your iCloud storage - thus freeing up space on your iOS device. There is also a little note when you turn it on that says - You should have purchased the 64 GB version next time don't be so cheap and spring for the additional storage.
There were some other fit and finish updates like iCloud icons getting updated and new icon for Body data in the health app.
Over all it seems this update was more geared toward bug fixes than feature changes. Will see how it goes with crashes - because I can say there were a bunch with beta 4 and the podcasts app. And I already had a few with beta 5. I was thinking maybe Beta 5 would be it for the betas - but if I keep seeing crashes - maybe there will be a beta 6 after all. Last year Beta 6 came out for iOS 7 around August 19th. So that would be on par for the next beta release of iOS 8 - which right now I am leaning towards thinking at least one more beta before GM.
I am going to try and put together a nice list of battery saving options for iOS 8 - as some of the new default options I mentioned before are going to be battery draining features.

-iphone-event-on-sept-9/
Ok - and look for new news I need to no more. Apple Today the 5th of August let the folks at REcode - formerly All things D - know that they will be having their Apple Event on Tuesday September 9th. That means look for iOS 8 to go Live on Wednesday the 17th and the iPhone 6 to be launched on Friday the 19th. Yeah - no having to wait in line over night and then rush out to the airport to catch my flight to LA Podfest.
Very interesting that Apple leaked or informed or told the world about this so far in advance - past years would have this announcements with in a week of the event.
The Date of the even is not a shock - I think the biggest shock is how early Apple let the cat out of the bag. Must mean one of their competitors is getting ready to announce something - and Apple wanted to take the wind out of their sails.
Oh hey wait look CTIA Super Mobility Week event in Las Vegas kicks off on Yup you guessed it September 9th.
I know Apple would never admit it - but they sooooo love stealing the wind out of others sails.

fcc-verizon/index.html
I mentioned on the last show that Verizon announced if you were on an unlimited plan with LTE - they were going to do some network optimization with your account - and as I said it is never a good thing when your carrier targets you for network optimization.
Well guess who else did not think it was a good thing. The FCC - and specifically the Chairman of the FCC Tom Wheeler - who sent a letter to Verizon questioning its plan to castrate LTE users. He would have sent an email - but I guess his data plan was over the limit.
Wheeler didn't mince words when it came to his criticism of Verizon's plan - saying he was quote deeply troubled unquote by Verizons plan and said that network optimization is not a justification for slowing connections of paying customers. He said the actions were quote disturbing unquote and suggested that Verizon was trying to force people into a usage-based plan - He also asked if people liked his captain obvious pin that he was wearing.
Verizon for their part said they will send an official response to Wheeler once it had quote received and reviewed the letter unquote - but added the initial draft of their response was to hold up their first there fingers and ask Wheeler to read between the lines. Again that was just Verizon first draft - it is possible a couple of fingers may be removed for the final draft - Verizon said if that is the case on the final draft then their response to Wheeler would be right in line with their response to all their LTE customers on unlimited plans - and they said they like to keep their responses as optimized as possible to all parties.

Hi Rob,
One of the listeners was looking for an app that would allow him to download youtube videos onto his phone to watch later. I called in and left a message for you about one app that I use that does this. It is called Tdownloader. At the time, the app was no longer in the app store. But, I have since seen that it has resurfaced as "Total Downloader" by App Ideas.
I have not done the update yet that appeared this week. But, the original version I have will do several useful things that I have needed, and used it for. Just a few are the following....
Download youtube videos
convert them to mp3 or aac
convert them to other video formats
convert the mp3 to a ringtone ( you have to use iTunes to add it to your phone though)
These can all be done quite easily. I really like this app.
Regards,
Tim in Atlanta
Hi Rob,
Also, someone had a question about the alarm stop button not working. I've had a similar, albeit not identical, issue.
I use the timer for holding certain positions while exercising and many of those are for 1 minute. Meanwhile my Auto-Lock is always set for 1 minute. When the timer reaches zero and the auto lock reaches zero, the phone seems to be confused. Where I would normally press "stop timer" the button is there, but the whole screen is greyed in its pre-auto-lock mode. The stop timer button is inactive and I have to press the sleep button. The phone awkwardly shakes itself out of its confusion and is then restored to normal.
I'd be willing to bet that last week's listener. would have success if he would change his auto-lock to something other than 1 minute. I hope that works. Bear in mind that I'm using the timer and he's using the alarm clock. Sounds similar though.
Regards,
Matt
Hi Rob:
For some reason, Apple changed the search feature in the IOS Mail App so that you can no longer search for email by field, and the results no longer show in chronological order. This change was made in IOS 7 and has not been corrected in IOS 8. Do you know a work-around for this? Any suggestions would be helpful.
Regards,
Steve
Thanks Steve for the email - Yeah a year ago it was really annoying when Apple made that change. And now it is really disappointing they did not change it for iOS 8. Back in iOS 6 and earlier when in the native mail app and in the search bar you had the choices of search in From, To, Subject and All of emails. Sadly with iOS 8 as you mentioned it is just one search in ALL - with no options to just search just From or Just To or Just Subject.
If anyone has any suggestions for Steve - other than cross your fingers and wait for iOS 9 - I would love to hear them - give us a call - 206-666-6364 - that is 206-moon-dog - or send an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com.

We are now well over 1,100 members in our Google+ community and growing.
Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.
One new popular post in the G+ community this past week came from -
Craig Lucas - he asked about Podcasts App and if anyone did a study of them. Well I have not looked at all of them - but I have looked at most. And Most have a feature or two that makes them stand out. Most - not all. But what I can tell you is something about usage. Being I have access to the best Podcast download data in the world. Libsyn User Agent data. And here are the top 12 apps for July by usage:
1. Podcasts App - Apple - nothing even close.
2. Stitcher
3. Overcast (not bad for a partial month of availability)
4. Shifty Jelly Pocketcasts
5. Instacast
6. iCatcher
7. RSSRadio
8. Podcruncher
9. Castro
10. Downcast
11. Swell
12. Pod Wrangler
This does not mean these are the best apps in that order - just what the most people are using in that order. Some are free some are Paid.
I should point out the Number 11 app - Swell - that was recently purchased by Apple - I kind of am in shock of that news - as I am not a fan of that app or what it was doing. It was about discovery - and not about consumption - and its low numbers - I mean really low numbers were a reflection of how the app really was not a good fit for podcast consumers - who know what they want when they want it - they just are looking for something easy to consume the podcasts they want to consume at that moment. Which is why Stitcher and Overcast are so well used - that is their focus - as is the focus of Pocketcasts and Instacast and Castro.
And looks like Apple has already removed the Swell app from iTunes. I am shocked Apple purchased that app - it really was not a good user experience - and never saw any real traffic. I am guessing Apple was looking for their Algorithm and development team more than for the App - which Apples Podcasts App in My opinion is far far superior to - even back when it was at version 1.0. So the shuttering of the Swell app is not a loss for end users - well not many end users at least. Did I mention I did not like this app and I am shocked I tell you shocked Apple purchased them - Anyway - back to the Google+ posts - Thanks to Craig for the initial post in the google + community
- And this past week there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android bois free zone and spammer free zone. Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.
Folks Go to today in iOS dot com slash community to join in.
And thanks to all 1100+ of you already in the community and contributing.
Back to the email bag.
Hi Rob,
I don't know about you but my head is getting burned out with all these stunning podcast apps, I started several years ago with "Downcast" then tried the terrible "Apple" app & went back to "Downcast" until the iOS 7 version of apples podcast app became usable & I've basically stuck with that. I've dabbled with Stitcher, Pocketcasts, Castro, Network & the latest offering of Overcast. All of these apps bring something different to the table but I always end up back with Apples offering. The Siri integration is priceless in the car & it works with my Sonos via their app (as does stitcher) which non of the other apps do yet. I feel like I'm cheating on Apple using any other app too long, what do you & the listeners use to consume podcasts?
Regards,
Craig
Liverpool
Thanks for the feedback Craig - and clearly per the numbers I mentioned you are not alone - when I said Apples Podcasts app was number one - it was multiple times larger than ALL the other aggregator apps combined. Again 2nd place Stitcher is no where close to the Podcasts app - and that is in part because the integration is better and part most people mostly use the stock apps. But Siri integration with the Podcasts App is getting much much better. Well I guess any integration is actually a big plus.

http://newsroom.t-mobile.com/issues-insights-blog/plus-ten.htm
Here is another article that came to me via the Google+ community - Thanks to Francisco Tapia for this one.
Let me read a quote from this article Quote
I pulled alongside a bus covered with yet another ad for AT&T’s “Best-Ever Pricing” for families. These ads are everywhere. AT&T’s sinking some serious dough into marketing their latest-greatest family pricing, which strikes me as funny. Because their deal is no deal at all, and next to T-Mobile’s Simple Choice Family Plan, AT&T’s “Best-Ever Pricing for Families” is a joke.
UNQUOTE - while that might seem like a typical blog post from any tech blogger out there - this one was actually a blog post from John Legere - the President and CEO of T-Mobile - whom later says in the post He calls them on their BS.
But rather than just say it is a joke and BS per the AT&T best ever pricing claim - He laid out a chart that showed it to be a joke for a number of reasons.
In the chart there is T-mobiles Simple Choice - AT&T's best ever family - share value plan, Verizons More Everything plan and Sprints Framily plan. All based on 4 smartphone lines.
First up T-mobile offers unlimited - Talk, text & data. AT&T, Verizon and Sprint - just unlimited Talk and text.
There are no overages with T-mobile - there are with the other. Sprints Plan is just for 4GB of data total or 1GB per line. The others are 10GB LTE data.
But here is what is interesting on the pricing. AT&T, Verizon and Sprints plans are all $160 a month - so not sure how AT&T based on that can say their plan is the best ever pricing. As it is the same as Sprint and Verizon - and T-mobiles is already better at just $100 a month. So if T-mobile services your area - you have a need for 4 phones lines - you - your spouse / significant other - and two offspring. Then T-mobile will save you $60 a month. Now that does mean you will need to pay full price for your phones with t-mobile. Not sure what you get phone wise with the other guys for a subsidy. But some quick math shows at $60 a month - that means you are saving $720 a year for your plans. Vs say the $849 you would pay for the top of the line 64 GB iPhone 5S. Note that $849 phone would cost you $400 even with a subsidy So yes seems a better deal over all if you can shell out the upfront fee.
Now I should point out the fine print - Offer ends 9/30/14 - pricing for 4 lines only 2.5 GB per line/month until 1/2/2016 - then 1GB data per line. So that kind of is a little bit of BS there on T-mobiles part - when they say unlimited Talk, text & data - that does not appear to mean unlimited LTE data - as there is a 2.5 GB per line cap for LTE data.
Sounds like some plan break downs are going to be needed once Apple announces the new phones. I know I am going to have make a decision if they do announce a 5.5 inch phone about updating early. After all - why pay full price and then $110 a month for my AT&T plan plus $60 for my wifes T-mobile plan - when I can get 4 phone lines - for just $100 a month. I think I have some cost cutting to do in the near future. I might need to start watching Netflix full time on my iPhone via LTE until AT&T kicks me off the unlimited plan.

http://blog.streamingmedia.com/2014/02/
apple-building-cdn-software-video-delivery.html
So Apple has built out their own CDN - which stands for Content Delivery Network. This is what they will use to deliver the plethora of Movies, TV shows, Apps and most importantly iOS Updates. A report from an Analyst Dan Rayburn from Frost and Sullivan says that Apples CDN is now live and said Analyst also is reporting Apple has a deal in place with comcast - which I would assume involves Comcast not slowing down the last mile on Apple. i.e. - the dark side of net not neutrality.
Supposedly Apple has 10x the capacity in place today then they had in the past with Akami and Level 3. So does this mean you are safe to update to iOS 8 on September 24th or 17th or what ever day it first goes live - Heck NO. In Theory all will go well with the launch of iOS 8 - but the probability that Apples own home built CDN will not have a glitch when iOS 8 launches and 100's of millions of people start downloading iOS all with in a couple of hours of each other - Yeah - I would definitely take the over when it comes to the number of issues that are going to pop up. I hope that I am wrong - but for your own sake - as I have said many times in the past - don't be the first one to update to a new version of iOS - wait a week. Don't trust in the reports about Apples 10X capacity for their CDN - there is no reason to update on that first day - wait a week to 10 days + then do the update. I will talk about this more in September - but just remember - be patient.
And you know what you can do - go and rent SnowPiecer on AppleTV and watch it with the new faster download speed. And yes I did do that Sunday night and it did stream faster than with other movies I rented in the past - or it could just be a placebo effect where I thought it streamed faster. By the way SnowPiecer was pretty good - if you like post-appocalyptic - dystopian future type movies.

http://www.sbkuch.com/2014/07/apple-ipad-air-2-
release-date-specs-and.html
Hey finally some rumors about the iPad Air 2 - or next Gen Top of the line iPad. So what does the rumor say and share that is ground breaking and un-expected - Well actually it says it might have a 2k display or a 4k display. ummm what? Ok - it is likely going to be exactly where it is now - doubling it from where it is now makes no sense - let me explain.
Lets look at what 4K resolution is anyway - It really has been
U HD TV - or ultra High Def TV that has been adopted as 4k for Consumer 4K TV - and that is 3840 x 2160 pixels.
Compare that to the iPad air with a dimension of 2048 x 1536.
So a doubling of the iPad air would go to 4096 x 3072 - which is a lot of over kill vs Commercial 4K TV specs.
Industrial 4k TV is defined as 4096 x 2160 - so doubling the iPad air would allow you to cover both Commercial and Industrial 4K TV - but really is it needed and what does it get you? Just seems like a lot of overkill with little reward and well much higher costs of manufacturing and lower margins.
Even if Apple only went after Commercial 4k - that would mean upping the iPad air from 2048 x 1536 to 3840 x 2880 - if they wanted to keep the Aspect ratio in tact for ease of app migration / compatibility.
Again - I just don't see that happening this year. So that was the one rumor in the article that did not make sense - and the rest of the rumors on the specs - were no brainers. It is simple - look at the iPhone 5S - what does it have the iPad Air does not - and move those items over - and give the iPad Air 2 the best processor. So for the iPad Air 2 - likely / common sense specs would be-
An A8 Processor clocked at or over 2 GHZ.
Up the camera to the iPhone 5S camera - which means 8 MP
Add touch ID
And well that was kind of the rest of the specs suggested by the article.
Not sure a faster processor, better Camera, and touch ID are going to get anyone to upgrade from an iPad Air first gen or even an iPad 4th gen or 3rd gen for that matter.
Hmmm - maybe they will go with a 4K resolution after all - now that I look at the likely other spec upgrades. But then again there is lies the issue for Apple and the iPad's - they just made too good of a device - such that the original iPad is still a very useful and functional device 4+ years later. Will a 4K resolution screen, touch ID, A8 processor and 8 MB camera really get people to upgrade from an older iPad. HMMMMM - Personally I am not sure there is anything Apple could add to get me to consider getting a new iPad - I have the 1st and 3rd gen iPads, and a Retina Mini. But even with out the retina mini. And I am guessing that is exactly why Apple has seen some year over year declines in iPad sales - they have hit a saturation point with a device that easily has a 4+ year useful life.

http://seekingalpha.com/article/2353605-cornings-
results-suggest-no-sapphire-iphone-this-year
A few interesting articles out about Cornings recent quarterly conference call - with regards to question it received about Sapphire eating into Gorilla glass sales. Seems Corning did not say or indicate there would be any down trend in sales for Gorilla Glass this quarter - and analysts are taking that to mean Sapphire will not be on the iPhone 6 or at least not in mass.
Or as they said quote
- A review of Corning's Display Segment earnings results failed to find the definite impact to Gorilla Glass sales expected if Apple had switched to sapphire for iPhone 6.
- This indicates that Apple has delayed the use of sapphire into next year.
unquote
So there you go - no Sapphire for the iPhone 6.
Or maybe just maybe - what this means - Is that Apple plans to continue to build the iPhone 5S and 5C and iPad's with Gorilla glass - and only the iPhone 6 will be sapphire.
And Apple has not tipped their hand yet with regards to long term sales to corning. After all - last quarter there were reports that the iPhone 4S and 5C were selling as many units in a month as the 5S. So that means based on similar trends going forward - there is still going to be quite a bit of Gorilla glass needed by Apple - and Samsung and HTC and others. Maybe that is why Corning is projecting 20% growth in Gorilla glass sales - rather than Apple pushing out Sapphire until the iPhone 6S - where the S would be for Sapphire. Please note I am so wrapped up in the rumors about Sapphire it is very likely I have lost any objectivity about it being on the iPhone 6 - I almost think it has to be there - but that does not mean Apple thinks the same way. But then again Cornings future statements don't mean anything either - as there is still going to be plenty of Gorilla glass purchased by Apple for the next 12+ months. Especially when you figure iPads will remain Gorilla glass for the very foreseeable future.

http://appleiph0ne.com/apple-store-employee-reveals-
iphone-6-launch-and-release-dates
I mention this story because well there will likely be others - and that is a story claiming that Apple Store employees are being told when the iPhone 6 will launch. Hey folks you know who is the last to ever know about new Apple products - yup Apple store employees. I talk to a lot of them - and you know when they find out - when Tim Cook is on stage at an event letting the rest of the world know. Heck they don't even see a new iPhone until just a couple of hours before it goes on sale - early the morning it goes on sale. As in 4:00 or 5:00 AM of launch day.
So when a rumor breaks about what some Apple store employee said will be the launch date at this point - not only should you ignore it - you should look with a very skeptical eye at any site that re-reports that rumor as anything other than BS.
Ok - in this case the rumor was the iPhone 6 would not ship until October 14th - after a Sept 16th announcement. Ok - none of that timing makes any sense. In the past the iPhone went on sale typically with in 10 days of the announcement. So yes on Sept 16th announcement - a big BS NO on October 14th launch. I am still saying either the 26th or the 19th for launch of the iPhone 6 - and any rumors based on what "inside sources" or Apple store employees said - should be dismissed as Link bait at best.
Again expect a few more stories like this before the month is out and even into early next month.

android-captures-record-85-percent-share-of-global-
smartphone-shipments-in-q2-2014-269301171.html
Strategy Analytics: just came out with a report about Q2 2014 Smartphone Shipments. And they have Android Capturing a Record 85 Percent Share of Global Smartphone Shipments.
They estimate that there were 295 Million smartphones shipped last quarter with the iPhones making up 35.2 Million. or 11.93% of shipments.
They showed a yr over yr decline in market share for smartphone shipments - even though the iPhone did increase the number of units sold last quarter vs the year ago quarter.
Mind you what they did not show was the percentage of Smartphone Profits.
What we do know is Apple reports Quarterly Records for iPhone sales and Profits and Revenue. We also know that Samsung reported its lowest profit in two years as quote smartphone sales languish unquote. That with regards to the Galaxy S5 sales - and Samsung is predicting the rest of 2014 will quote remain a challenge unquote. This as the increased marketing expenditure to try and move a backlog of devices. Yikes - not good for Samsung.
Again - no mention in the Strategy Analytics report about Profit share for last quarter. But For Q1 2014 - Apples 15.5% of Smartphone shipments - represented 65% of all Smartphone Profits - Samsung was second in that quarter with 41% of profits.
Given Samsungs most recent quarterly report and how profits for them were way down - it is possible Apple may be over 80% of all smartphone profits for Q2 2014. Will be interesting to see where the next Canaccord Genuity report pegs smartphone profits at. It should be out in the next couple of weeks.
Does Market Share really matter when you are raking in over 3/4's of the profits in a segment?
And most importantly - developers are making the most money on your platform.
One interesting adder here - comes from a story at ZDNet talking about the Sept 9th event - in the Article - They quote an Anal-list - a Mr. Nicholas Landell-Mills from Indigo. He said Apples higher end premium approach is a flawed strategy - saying with few sales it makes it difficult for Apple to reinvest its profits into its products. Huh!!! Clearly Nepotism is alive and well at Indigo - because other then him being the bosses Son or Son-in-law - I can't imagine any reason to hire anyone so clueless. Yes because with 65% + of the profits in the cellphone space - Apple is really hurting for profits it can re-invest? And again that number is likely going to 80% - how much more profits does he want Apple to get? And going after the low end market is not going to bring profits - see Nokia, Motorola, LG and now even Samsung.
And lets not forget Apple has over $160 Billion in cash - seems like a total collapse of sales could happen - and Apple still has tons of money to re-invest back into the company.
Mr Landell-Mills - WOW - I mean really WOW. And that sums up why Wallstreet types don't get or understand Apple. It is not about market share it is about profit share.

apple-chooses-tsmc-for-a8-although-rumor-says-it-will-
produce-processors-for-iphone-7/
If you are a long time listener - you know I was never a fan of Apples Legal battles with Samsung - Yes sammy ripped off Apple - but Apple was also a big customer of Sammy's and their business helped lower costs over all for Sammy. And I said Apple should do what they can to design out Sammy in any way shape or IC. And now it looks like that strategy is one Apple has adopted and it starting to hit home with Sammy.
From their quarterly conference call - Samsung executives admitted that the outlook isn’t so bright for their IC business.
quote
“Sales and profitability from System LSI (logic chip business) worsened as demand from main customers continued to decline,” unquote said Robert Yi, Samsung’s head of investor relations said last week. His comments pretty much confirmed, how Apple’s slow migration away from Samsung as a vendor for their microprocessors was eating into Sammy's profits. Oh so sad for Sammy.
It looks like TSMC has been awarded the A8 chip business exclusively if rumors are to be believed. Would love to see what Percentage of the iPhone 6's BOM came from Samsung vs that of the 3G or 3GS?

vulnerability-allows-malware-to-compromise-most-devices-and-apps.html
Thanks to Tom D - for pointing out this next Its Time to Slam Android Article. You know these are some of my favorite articles.
Actually a few people sent in links to this one. Tom D just beat everyone else to the pouch.
The article title is Critical Android vulnerability lets malware compromise most devices and apps.
Either that is link bait at its best or Yikes if you have an android device.
From the article - Jeff Forristal - the Chief Tech Officer at Bluebox Security - said the issue is Android fails to validate public key infrastructure certificates chains for app digital signatures. Ummm yeah.
In a nut shell - what this means in Android there are some hard codes certificates from several developers like Adobe that allow those it thinks are adobe to insert code into other apps. And in theory Android is supposed to validate it really is adobe that is using the certificate - but it sounds like that it is easy for malware to spoof that validation or as Forristal said Quote it is very very easy for malware to use this attack it is silent, transparent, with no notifications to users unquote.
Now the good news is If your Android device is running 4.4 or later you are ok - Now the bad news - According to google - over 82% of Android owners are running 4.3 or earlier and are open to this vulnerability. So nope not link bait - this is a YIKES article.
As normal when this type of report comes out - it was on the front page of CNN - there were Senators calling for Action - and there were Pink Elephants flying around the room.
If you want to learn more - and there is more in that article that is actually scarier than when I said as in talking about potential issues with google wallet with regards to this attack and your credit card info - look for the link - Android vulnerability allows malware to compromise most devices and apps from Network World - in the show notes for ep 316 over at today in iOS dot com.

VOICEMAIL - Question_unlocked_Phone
Hi Rob,
One rumor I’m just not buying: the glowing Apple logo. Yes, I admit it would be cool for geek cred, but the iPhone already has such power-sucking features that why would you want to have another one? And so many people put theirs in cases. I just don’t see the usefulness outweighing the practicality of saving power and heat generation.
Regards,
Chelsea
Hi Chelsea - Actually the glowing Apple logo if done right could be used to notify you of a waiting or missed message - and they could use LED panels that actually use much less juice then their flash LED. So by going with the Apple logo lighting up - they could save electricity vs the True tone flash.
Hi Rob, both myself and my girlfriend have had similar issues recently.
Calls would come in but iPhone would not ring. It would vibrate and we can see on screen who was calling, but even then when we moved the slider across the phone the call would not be picked up.
We are on different networks in the UK.
My girlfriend’s phone would even more annoyingly, NEVER connect her the first time when she called out. Second time it was fine.
I work in IT and often help iPhone friends and customers out, but this one stumped me.
My girlfriend called her network (she got through on her second call) and they suggested doing the “network re-set” that you always wisely suggest to do before any system upgrade.
Since then everything has worked perfectly, so we thought it would be worth mentioning to everyone out there.
Regards,
Anthony and Sharon from London UK
Hi Rob,
Running the latest IOS 7 several people at work were noticing that recurring meetings were not showing up on our phones from our corporate Outlook 2010 calendar. One time meetings would show up just fine, but recurring meetings would not show up. This seemed to solve the problem, just in case other people are having the same issue.
========
Not seeing the recurring meetings on my iphone. The meetings show up in outlook and my PC, but not my Iphone. Other meetings seem to be okay
=======
Please go to settings à mail, contacts, calendars-àClick on your Outlook email account àthen turn off the calendar and then reboot the device and then turn on the calendar again.

Hi Rob,
Is there any way to remove scratches on iPhone screen?
Regards,
Zachary S
Hi Zach -
None that I am aware of.
Best thing to do if you have a scratch - get a good protective case from Ballistic or Nuguard or life case or Otterbox or something similar and then also get a screen protector for it.
If you drop it with a scratch it is much much more likely to fracture then without any scratches.
Good luck

Yeah - Just filled out the survey for my SOS charger. this is the one funded back on April 26th 2013 - with a delivery of August 2013 estimated - and now a delivery of August 2014 expected. Hopefully before August 15th - so I can take it with me to Podcast Movement expo. Hopefully this is worth the very long wait.
More hopefully on this on Ep 318.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/simple-
snap-iphone-ipad-screen-protector
This week we have an indie go go project called - Simple Snap - it had a goal of $10k - and has raised a little over $10k - so this one is funded.
What simple snap is - is a Screen protector that is simple to install with no bubbles on your iOS device.
So if you are someone that likes to have a screen protector - which I am and I recommend - but you can't put one on to save your life with out having bubbles - and bubbles really really annoy you - then you will want to look at this - the screen protectors start at $9 for the HD Anti-fingerprint version. and $15 for the tempered glass protector. Both of those for the 5, 5C and 5S.
Watch the video to see how this works - I don't think I can accurately explain it - as the video is much better at showing it in action.
Look for Simple Snap in the show notes for ep 316 or search for it at indiegogo dot com

article863182.html
Hi Rob,
I saw this article and thought you might be interested. It is about Iliad in France trying to take over T-Mobile in the US - If this ever goes through it will be a huge impact in the states.
I used free Iiliad in france for years that has shaken up the established telecom companies in France. for 30 euros a month they broke the model with triple play (internet ADSL, TV, and phone) all you can use including a free box with DVD (now blue ray), disk for saving tv shows, and fast internet and free unlimited phone calls throughout most of the world. in my Paris apartment I get 12MB speeds so I haven’t bothered to update to fiber.
For my kids I pay 16 or 20 euros for unlimited mobile and international calls. The iphone switches to to the free box wifi automatically if it can find it so it saves them money with the huge number of people that have switched to free. Also you are not locked into a contract! I bought an I phone 5 through them with 3 payments but you can also pick 1 or 2 year of low payments. The business model really makes sense and they are on the cutting edge. I like the iphone app that lets me program by tv and stream anything on my iphone or ipad. As there isn’t any cap, no problems...
For my Family and friends in the US, I hope this deal works out. This guy is a trend setter.
The analysts don’t understand the shake up this would cause and I think he could succeed
Regards,
Rick P
Hi Rick - Thanks for the feedback - reading the article - the Analysts think this is just a bid by Iliad to try and get a % of T-Mobile now at a lower price and sell in a couple of years to Sprint for a nice profit when Sprint finally gets their ducks in a row for their purchase of T-Mobile. It does not look based on the Analysts thoughts that this is an acquisition based on growing T-Mobile - rather just growing their bank book.
From what you say Iliad sounds like a very progressive shake up the establishment type company - and maybe the Analysts just can't understand that type of company and can't bring themselves to see how anyone would want to run the 4th largest carrier in the US. They just think you have to merge number 3 and number 4 to compete with number 1 and number 2. And anything other than merging 1 and 2 does not compute - other than again trying to turn a quick buck. Will be interesting to see how this one plays out over time - especially since I live a stones throw from Sprints headquarters - whom seems to be the one most impacted by this offer to buy T-mobile.

Here is another Google+ post from the Tii community I wanted to mention - the original post was from Chad Kay - and he asked if anyone had seen this issue before - with this issue being where the iPhone would get stuck in a loop between the home screen and the White Apple logo screen.
Advice to him was to get the unit into DFU mode and restore - which eventually is what fixed the issue for him.
Here is what Chad had to say quote Thanks for the tips. After several failed attempts DFU mode finally worked. I was not able to do a full restore as it appears some data which was on my last couple icloud backups was corrupted. I had to set the phone up as if it was new and sink my contacts from icloud which was the most important. Let this serve as an example: back up to a computer even if you use iCloud.
unquote
Thanks Chad for that reminder - do not just back up to the iCloud - I highly recommend you also do back ups to your computer.
So next time your iOS device is connected to your computer - go to iTunes and do a manual back up to iTunes on your computer. Sounds like Chad is wishing he had. And Chad - thanks for sharing - hopefully someone will listen and you will save them some grief in the future.

Hi Rob,
I'm hoping you or the listeners can help me , I'm having my Apple ID password repeatedly rejected . I'm talking about up to 10+ times on some occasions,
It's driving me crazy ! I don't dare try two step verification,
This is the fourth if not fifth time this has happened .
It can be iBooks ,iTunes any app that does this .
Even just signing in to my account on iTunes .
It'll say "password incorrect" I'll reset and then it will reject the new password on sign in to my account .
Any ideas would be helpful
Regards,
Jenny
Hi Jenny - I can't say I have that happen to me - but if anyone else has and they know how to help Jenny - please give us a call - 206-666-6364 - that is 206-moon-dog or send an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com.
Hey Rob,
Received the attached check for $40 in settlement for AT&T's "unlimited" plans. Thought it might be of interest to your listeners. Not sure whether I've heard you cover the settlement or not.
Best regards,
Jeff in Burbank
Hi Jeff - not sure if I mentioned it on the show - I tend to shy away from the Lawsuit stories if at all possible - this one is sad in that Apple was dragged into it - when Apple totally hosed apple on this deal - for those that don't remember - when the iPad first came out there was a promise of being able to use the cellular month to month on an as needed basis for a low fee and unlimited for that month. Then something happened - Apple sold way way more than AT&T or Apple thought they were and Apple back peddled faster then a hiker coming across a mama grizzly bear and her two young cubs. And Apple was miffed - and then came the class action lawsuit and Apple was doubly miffed with AT&T. Congrats on getting your $40 check and I am sure more than a few listeners received their checks as well.
I wanted to mention something about when you block calls. And I have George S to thank on this. As he asked. He wanted to know what the caller you block hears when they call.
Essentially what the person you block hears - business as usual - All seems normal - they just go right to voicemail - or they think their text was delivered.
So one thing you don't want to do is block an annoying client - because they will think you got the message.
You as the person that is blocking someone - will get the voicemail message - but it will be listed at the bottom of the list of voicemail messages in an area marked oddly enough - Blocked Messages. Which is right below Deleted messages - which is right below all your messages in your inbox. And no they don't show in your count of unread voicemail messages.
Long of the short - don't ever block someone you may need to get messages from especially in a timely manner.
Thanks again to George S for his help testing this out.

This one came in via Google+ and was kind of disturbing
From Chris Searle - he wrote. Quote
Hey guys I'm about to get my battery replaced in my 5s and I got a quote for $80.. CDN would that be considered a fair price or am I getting hosed? And what should I be looking when replacing the battery.. I was also told to consider a new lightning port, due to some corrosion. Something doesn't feel right about that..
unquote
As Robert Kelly told him and I told him - Go and take your iPhone 5S to an Apple store. It is under a year old obviously at this point - and the battery should not need replacing - if it does then it should be covered by the warranty. And that the guy also said you need to consider a new lightning port - RUN AWAY RUN AWAY. This person is far from ethical - first they should have told you to go to the apple store - and that they are trying to charge you for replacing the lighting port - that is really really disturbing.
Remember folks - there are people out there who's main goal in life is separating as much of your money from your that they can get. Once again Chris - RUN AWAY RUN AWAY - and run into an apple store. Same goes for anyone else that thinks they need a new Battery. Chances are by the way - nothing is wrong with the battery - you just might have settings wrong for different services. Don't forget about my Snapguide guide about battery saving tips for iOS 7 - there are over a dozen tips for reducing battery usage. Go to snapguide dot com or the snap guide app and search for Rob Walch - that is R O B W A L C H - and select How to improve battery Life in iOS7 for iPhone & iPad.
Hi Rob,
I was just listening to iTem 0315 and heard the bad review of the Freedompop hotspot. I've had the hotspot in my backpack for over a year now and love it. I've got an iPhone 5S and an iPad 3 both with data plans that I use very often and are not always connected to the hotspot. The Freedompop hotspot is a great backup, though. I've got it set up with no password required so if someone around me needs a little data (I've got kids and a wife without a data plan), I will just turn the hotspot on. Then, they can easily connect to the device without issue. It is only 500 MB so I always advise not to be watching video or anything. As for the 99 cent charge per month, that also happened to me. I called the customer service line and the guy happily took the charges off of my account and we went on our way. That was several months ago and I have not seen a charge since. Anyway, just thought you should know that I am very happy with my device.
