In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote ““Google glasses may look and seem absurd now but (Brian) Sozzi says they are “a product that is going to set the stage for many other interesting products.” For the moment, at least, the same cannot be said of iPhones or iPads. unquote

Jeff Macke, Yahoo! Breakout, 27 February 2013

The iPhone and iPad were industry changing devices that set the stage for all Smartphones and tablets that have come since.  Google Glass is an uber geeky product that other geeks make fun of those wearing it and everyone else looks at Google Glass users with distain -no offense to anyone in the audience wearing it - but - Just Sayin

    deals-apple-store-hours-announced/

As I mentioned on the last episode - I would be giving some blackFriday deals on this episode.  To start with - Apple announced their Apple store hours for the 28th - and that will be 8:00 AM Local time - 2 hours earlier than normal.

    04:09

    http://finance.yahoo.com/news/apples-black-friday-deals-

    213324461.html

And if you go to the Apple store what are you going to save.

Well for any iPhone that is $99 down or more - you will save $50.

Any iPad - you will also save $50.

Any Mac - Except Mac Pro - you will save $100

And iPod Touch or iPod Nano - you save $25 - same with any Apple TV and any Beats HeadPhones and Speakers.

So really the best deal is $25 off a $99 Apple TV.

    04:53

    http://www.tuaw.com/2014/11/23/black-friday-2014-best-

    deals-on-the-ipad-air-and-ipad-mini/

But as we have seen in the past - Apple Stores are not where you will get the best deals.  Other stores will offer even sweeter deals to try to lure you in their stores.

Lets start with the iPad Air 2 - Best Buy is offering $100 discount for All iPad Air 2 models - double what Apple is offering.  However Target is offering a better deal of $140 gift card off any iPad Air 2.

The iPad Mini 3 - you can get a $100 gift card at Target.

There are also a bunch of $100 discounts or gift cards for the iPad Air original at Walmart, Target, Sam's club, Staples and more.

If you are looking for a new iPad under $200 - You can actually find one at Walmart.  The 16 GB Wifi only iPad mini original - is $199 + a $30 walmart gift card - Available between 6 and 7 pm on November 27th only.  So a final price of $169 - which is also the price you would pay at Target well after you pay $249 and then get an $80 Target Gift card.

Speaking of iTunes gift cards - lots of places with them for 15% off - that is kind of the normal special discount through out the year - it is the %20 discount that is the rare and best deal when you can find it. And it looks like Sams club will be selling 4 packs of $25 gift cards for $79 - which is nice to stock up on for Birthday presents and presents for teachers.

I would suggest holding for buying iTunes cards at the 15% discount - as 20% discounts are the ones I think are special.

Office Depot is also offering up the 20% discount on a $50 iTunes gift card.

Personally I will be going to Sams club to stock up - limits 15 per customer and 50 per store.  Friday to Sunday - not that there will be any left even on Saturday.

    Hi Rob,

Stopped in a Costco in Kona, HI. They have $100 of iTunes gift cards discounted to $79.49 (4x25 limit 3.) That's the lowest I've ever seen. Not sure if this is the same deal at mainland Costco stores but if anyone is on the Big Island, it's a bargain.

    Regards,

    Greg from LA.

The Pebble Steel - If you can not wait for the Apple Watch - will be $150 at Best Buy for Black Friday - that is $50 off the current price and $100 off where the price was earlier in the year.

    spectacular-black-friday-deals-on-apple-products

I mentioned on the last show about the Crusta Case from Amzer - well they are offering 30% off Orders on their website on Black Friday - 12:01 AM to 8 PM CT - Use the code FRIDAY - It is a north American deal only.  Go to Amzer.com to see their product offerings - or go back to Ep 328 to hear my review of the Crusta - which is my iPhone 6Plus case of choice.

    http://www.amzer.com/crusta

A Reminder - if you put out a social push or wrote a review about Today in iOS in iTunes - and want to be entered in the giveaway for the Crusta Case - you have until Friday morning to send me an email letting me know where you promoted the show.  I saw a couple of tweets promoting the show - where the person did not send in the email to today in iOS at gmail dot com.

    Put Crusta - C R U S T A in the subject line.

    09:43

    http://www.plxdevices.com/product_info.php?id=MOBLLEGIONMETER

Another item I mentioned on the last show with a Black Friday deal is the Legion Meter - They are offering a special buy one get one free offer.  So for $70 you get two Legion Meters.

I have not sat down and charted out how much faster it charges my iPhone yet - sorry - but I can tell you one place I use it now - and that is in charging up my Pebble watch - one of the issues I have had with my Pebble is in getting the mag charge connector to make a good contact - sometime I think it is connected and 8 hours later it is not charged.  But with the legion meter I can see it go from no W's drawn to 0.4 Watts - and that means it is charging.  If you have a device that you are not sure if it charging - or just want to check to see if it is done - as in the amount of power being used drops way off - then the Legion meter definitely helps there.

This black friday deal is a good one - Link in the show notes.

Another product we mentioned on the show recently is also having a black friday deal - that is XPrintserver from Lantronix - they are offering up a 20% discount from 12:01 AM Friday the 28th to 11:59 PM Monday December 1st.  Use promo code - BFCM2014 during the check out process.  It really is a cool device for connecting your USB printer to your network and being able to print to said USB printer from your iOS device. Take a listen to Ep 326 at the 46:08 mark to learn more about this device.

I am going to pin the post for this episode to the top of the Google+ community - if you come across any other Black Friday or Cyber Monday details you want to share - please put them in the comments for the post of this episode - Ep 329 in our GooglePlus community.

    the-iphone-6-and-iphone-6-plus-an-app-store-record-falls

Thanks to Michael for the heads up on this next one - which is being reported and re-reported - with some mis-information - and it is per the report from the Research company Fiksu - the put out a report on Smartphone App downloads - one of the items being reported is the following quote In October, App Store downloads reached a record 7.8 million per day. This compared to 5.5 million per day in September. unquote

Except for one minor bit of info - that 7.8 M per day and 5.5 mil per day are the number of downloads from the top 200 free apps in the US.  So not only did they miss that US only part - they missed the fact it is just for 200 apps out of over 1 Million apps.  Doooohhhh.

Now don't get me wrong 42 % increase from Sept to October is impressive.  Most Impressive.  But there are a lot more than 7.8 M downloads per day for iOS Apps.

All signs do point to a major record breaking quarter for iPhone sales - The stock price is also indicating that as well - at over $118 per share and climbing.

    Hey Rob,

Just listened to your latest podcast -- keep up the good work as always

I am experiencing the same issue with my iPad that you talked about with your wife's. I have the 3rd gen iPad and the wifi is not usable when Bluetooth is turned on and connected to my Bluetooth speaker. If I disconnect from my speaker everything goes back to normal though. I have had this issue since since I updated to iOS 8. I would be very interested in finding out a solution for this.

    Regards,

    Ryan

From the comments on the post for Ep 328.

Quote for Jonathan in New Orleans, about his question about family share, per the apple website, only one account is the family organizer and it is THEIR credit card that all purchase are made from.  One way to work around this issue as I have an 18yr old son, he has an iTunes Gift Card and all his purchases are made that way.  when he runs out he re-fills it and continues to purchase that way and I don't get charged on my credit card for his purchases, but when he runs out of credits he could alway just purchase anything he wanted on my credit card without the system asking me for permission.

    unquote

    Francisco Tapia

Thanks Francisco - Great way to do it - where other users on your account can make purchases without a credit card - and if you go per earlier in the show and pick up some gift cards this weekend - you may be able to save 20% of those cards.

    Hi Rob,

When I ask to use Apple Pay at the McDonald's drive thrus near me, the workers stick the card reader out the window so I can  reach it with my iPhone.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came out is from Lawrence McFarland - and it is per the Pebble and Smartwatch Pro app - and if you get the Smartwatch Pro app you can get $20 off on the Purchase of a Pebble watch.  Thus bringing the price down to $79.  Thanks Lawrence for that heads up.

    - And since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Folks Go to today in iOS dot com slash community to join in.

And thanks to all 1600+ of you already in the community and contributing.

Oh and Civil means just that - if you are not civil and tell someone that asks a question to go search for it or some other snarky comment - I will boot you.  The whole idea of this community is anyone can ask any question related to iOS with no fear of someone getting on them about asking it.

Thanks to all that sent in this next one.

And it is that Apple will soon be letting 3rd party products use of the Lightening port.  Earlier this month Apple had their Made for iDevices Summit in China - and this is where they let their partners know what is up and what they can do officially if they want to get that Made For iDevice certification - and again this year the big news was the opening up of the lightening port.

One of the first products will be Headphones directly plugged into the lightening port - expect those first from Apple / beats.

Additionally for all those battery pack cases out there - going forward instead of the micro USB port for charging the battery pack - it could be a lightning port.  Thus only needing to take your lightening cord with you on a trip.

The other news out of the Meeting - was that Apple has now started accepting product plans for Homekit.  So expect a whole bunch of product launches or really announcements around CES this year.

    capable-of-4k-video-output-may-pave-way-for-ultra-

    high-resolution-apple-tv

Thanks to all that sent in links for this next one - which is that the A8 chip in the iPhone 6 and 6plus already technically supports 4K video output.

That said the screen is not able to truly display 4k video.  The iPhone 6+ is 1920 x 1080  vs 4k Video resolution of 3840 x 2160 - yes exactly double on both dimensions for those checking on their calculator app.

This discovery of 4K video support was made by the developers of WALTR a Mac App that allows quick upload of video files to a users iPhone from the Mac.  In testing the App they found they could playback 4K video on the iPhone 6.

What Apple Insider speculates is that the A8 chip could be used for the guts of the next Apple TV - thus allowing for 4k video playback via Apple TV.

And file this one under - ok one more straw on the next Apple TV's back.

    mobility-gap-left-receding-blackberry/2014-11-19

Thanks to Paul G for this next one.  Which is about Apple filling in the void left by Blackberry's implosion in the Enterprise space.

According to Data from Globo and Enterprise Mobility Management company - per their customers in 2014.  iOS made up 61% of mobile devices deployed vs 35% for Android vs 3.4% for Blackberry vs 0.6% for Windows Phone.  Yikes.

Globo pins Apples success per its non-fragments platform.  vs well Androids very fragmented offering.  They also said iOS's updates being able to get out quickly and regularly helps ensure that security patches are not just available but actually installed.  Plus having everyone running on the latest version of the OS means less conflicts when collaborating with colleagues.

Add to that Apples push with IBM - and you can see Apple is getting more and more serious with the Enterprise market.  Which makes sense - as Apples is coming close to saturating the personal Mobile space - and may actually get to the point of saturation this quarter.  As in Quarterly sales may peak this quarter with basically flat sales yr/yr to a slight decline a year from now at least in the direct to consumer market - meaning any growth would need most likely come from the enterprise market.  As well it does not make sense for Apple to go into the low end of the consumer market.

    26:05

    http://9to5mac.com/2014/11/09/home-depot-

    windows-breach-macbooks-iphones/

This next one just goes in the too funny category - seem Home Depot blames its epic and massive Security breach on Windows - and now Senior executives at Home Depot have been given MacBooks and iPhones

So to summarize - Home Depot has a security breach in which 56 Million Credit card accounts and 53 Million email addresses of customers were compromised by hackers.  The root cause a windows vulnerability in Home Depots main computer network.

So the execs that are in charge of making sure that all is ok between Home Depot and their customers - after preceding over one of the most epic fails in consumer history - yeah these folks are rewarded with new Macs and iPhones.  Well that will teach them.   Like I said - too funny.

    Hi Rob,

I updated (iPhone 6) to IOS 8.1.1 and all my credit cards (4) were removed from passbook, not sure why, it was kind of a pain to add them back. I hope every update does not remove them.

    Hi Rob,

Nice looking and clean new version of the Tii app. But I have been living with it since it has been released and am finding it like a new pair of shoes to fit into. Mostly, I seem to remember that when episodes were played they disappeared off the feed. Now they just kind of hang around like unwanted guests that overstay their welcome. Am I missing something? Is there a setting I need to invoke? Or is that just how it works now.

    Regards,

    Larry

    Hi Larry,

In the Tii App - Up at the top of the Episode list  - tap on More.

Then you can select Played or unplayed.

The old version only let you darken the played ones there was no removing the old episodes - But now you can get a list that just shows unplayed or just shows played.

Additionally it also now shows you what % of the episode you have played.

So if you looked at all audio episodes for example - you would see what % you have played for each episode.

I think you will see there are much nicer features that are more user friendly for the podcast listener with the new version.

Thanks to Michael for this next one.  Which is a link to an article about Ecamm's Call Recorder - this is a Mac App - but I am mentioning it - as you can use it on a mac to record FaceTime calls and Phone Relay calls - so if you get a call on your iPhone and answer it on your mac - you can then record audio calls with Call Recorder.  Again you do need a Mac and an iPhone from which to hand off the call from.

The App is Free to try and costs $29.95 from Ecamm.

    VOICEMAIL - Review_Case_Robert_CA_Caseology_review

    Dear Rob,

During the month it took Apple to deliver my two, yes two, iPhone 6 Pluses, I researched and ordered a few items. Took your advice to heart about Post iPhone Delivery Stress Disorder and decided to get the wife a new phone rather than handing her my slow-as-all-get-out iPhone 4S — It worked! She loves her new 6 Plus and lets me play with mine all I want.

Anyway, here are the accessories I ordered and a few notes about them.

Power Support AFP Crystal Film for iPhone 6 Plus screen protector ($19.95 for a two pack). Great quality and value. I’ve used Power Support protectors on all my iPhones over the years. They last, don’t scratch, are absolutely clear and the touch sensitivity is great. For the last few devices, I’ve been going with crystal rather than anti-glare because photos look so much more brilliant. One note: because the new 6s have curved edges, the protector is limited to the flat part of the screen, leaving a small gap. Power Support explains that going all the way to the edge would involve making a curved protector that could more easily come off. There is a slight edge that you feel when you use gestures that come from off the screen to on, but it is not too objectionable. Power Support has assured me they are working on putting a beveled edge onto future products. Phenomenal value at $10 for each protector and it will, trust me, last the life of any iPhone. http://www.powersupportintl.com/iPhone-6-and-6-plus-s/1885.htm

Power Support Air Jacket Clear for iPhone 6 Plus case ($29.95). This is a minimalist case that retains the look and feel of the naked iPhone. Beautiful execution and feel. Somewhat of a struggle to get on and off but Power Support has a video that makes it easier. I like that I get to use the real buttons with their distinctive click for volume, etc. And everyone who sees the case oohs and ahhs and wants one. It is a bit slick, and I’ve had a few near bobbles while handing my 6 Plus over to friends and family to look at my photos. Need to be careful with this one. http://www.powersupportintl.com/iPhone-6-and-6-plus-s/1885.htm

Tech21 iPhone 6 Plus Case (Classic Check - Clear & Blue) ($39.99). These are the most protective and easy to use cases going. My wife loves the look of her blue one and I think it is a bit more attractive than the clear, especially with a Silver iPhone. The case, because it has a protective bumper all the way around makes the phone wider, this is a bit of a problem for me with my small hands. Not so much for my wife. However, this is my go-to case when I plan to take a lot of photos, pulling the 6 Plus out of my pocket over concrete several times an hour. The fit is fantastic and the 6 Plus pops in and out with little effort and, yet, it is a secure fit. https://www.tech21.com/iphone-6-plus-cases

Griffin Trainer fo iPhone 6 Plus armband ($19.99). My wife uses this for running. A good value. Can operate the phone through the case. The iPhone must be put in the case naked except for the screen protector. Easy to use and with the Tech21 case, going from one to the other is easy. To take a photo, you have to pull out the lens. It isn’t waterproof in any way so for rainy days, my wife has to put the 6 Plus in a Ziploc bag before putting it in the armband. http://store.griffintechnology.com/iphone-6/trainer-for-iphone-6-plus

amphipod AirFlow Lite belt ($23.95). This is what I prefer on my runs. It is a belt that easily fits the iPhone 6 Plus and has a second compartment for keys or gel packs. It says it is “moisture resistant” but I’d still put the phone in a Ziploc for a downpour. This is a great option for my wife when she doesn’t want to carry a purse and isn’t wearing jeans with a large enough pocket for the 6 Plus. Comes in three nifty fluorescent colors and classic black. http://www.amphipod.com/products/holders/music/electronics/airflow-lite

So those are my recommendations for the moment. Hope this helps some of your listeners who were asking about such things.

Always, always, love listening to your podcast. It keep me up to date and there isn’t an episode, not one, where I don’t learn something new and useful.

I noticed apple made their own apps free but all third party ones get even if there is no in app purchases!  I think apple should do free for 100% free and get for in app purchase(s) or hardware needed

    Hello Rob,

I want to report the  disappointing saga of my i-Pad mini.

I purchased a 64 gig wifi and cellular i-Pad Mini II    in August from BestBuy.

I had problems which most of your listeners will not have because I am strictly a voice over user.

I decided to learn all of the keyboard navigation short cuts but found that my Logitek keyboard case wouldn't pair.

I went to the Apple store and they could not pair my keyboard either. They tried it with an i-Pad Air II. They also tried an apple keyboard and their Logitek keyboard without success.

They thought my unit had been corrupted so ordered another.

I went in on Monday to pick it up.

First, they updated it to 8.1.1 and again tried all of the above mentioned keyboards.

I went home as they requested and called Apple-care who sent me back the next day.

I also tweeted around and found some work arounds.

There has been a bug since the release of IOS 8 in which some keyboards and some units do not work with Voice over. If Voice over is turned off, the pairing works and the keyboards function. If voice over stays on, the keyboards simply don't function, or in some cases, crash the IOS devices.

, I took my i-Pad back to Best Buy and got a full refund.

I know most people have had good experiences with the Apple stores and until now, I have had fine experiences.

But, the employees are not trained to handle complexity. Most don't know anything about voice over and one was horrified to find screen curtain on when he picked up my i-Pad. I told him how to fix it, and I brought the screen back to life.

I comment here only because I am saddened that I am not able to use an i-Pad. Yes, I can and do most everything from my phone, but using an i-Pad totally with keyboard control was something I wanted to do.

    Be ware of complexity.

    Regards,

    Jan B

When you mentioned the app Fotor was having a sale on in app purchases in ep. 324, I thought I'd try it out. Here is a pic of our cat, Orbit, which I took with my iPhone 6 and edited totally with Fotor.  The app was pretty simple to use and to play around with.

    and-ipad-2-a-little-faster-kind-of-sometimes/

As expected Apple released iOS 8.1.1 to the masses.  And what do we know about it.  Well first off it breaks the current Jailbreak - Actually Apple in the release notes credits the Pangu Jailbreak team for 3 exploits that were patched with this release.  Not sure if that was meant as a tip of the hat or flick of the chin.  Obviously if you are jailbroken or plan on jailbreaking stay at iOS 8.1

For everyone else - It looks good to upgrade.  For those with the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 - it says in the release notes this update improves performance.  By how much they do not say.  And different posts I have read said different things - some say it was very noticeable - others said barely noticeable - but all did seem to say it was an improvement even if just barely.

Battery life for me on my iPhone 6 Plus does seem to be improved.  But that was just in the first day where it had 6 and half hours of use and was at 55% battery life.  But that was the first time through.  More reports on Battery life on the next episode - maybe.

I guess the best thing I can say about this update is that the number of complaints seems to be the lowest for any iOS 8.x update.

Again if you are not planning on jailbreaking - then it is best to update to the latest version now.

By the way according to Musclenerd from the jailbreak team - he is saying iPhone 6 and 6+ need to avoid iOS 8.1.1 if they want to jailbreak as there is not going back to 8.1 - You can't downgrade for those devices.

    Hi Rob,

I have an 128GB iPhone 6 Plus that I just updated this morning to iOS 8.1.1 from iTunes on my MacBookPro. The update seemed to go smoothly.  However, before the upgrade I had about 400 music albums on my iPhone and afterwards I had 5.  I’m resyncing with my iTunes library now so I’m assuming that things will be back to normal soon enough, but it’s still a pain in the butt.  My general feeling is that I’ve seen more bugs in Apple’s software in the past several months than I’ve seen in the prior several years.  So just a couple of words of caution to all my fellow listeners when they update to 8.1.1, “Look out!”.

    Regards,

    Sincerely,

    Mike Z

    Roswell, GA

From Bob Berberick - I Upgraded 2 iPhones and 2 iPads. All went well using Rob's instructions as usual. Also upgraded to Yosemite and iCloud Drive. I was expecting an issue or two but haven't had any yet.

I had others reporting in some issues with battery life - which is odd - because my initial testing seems to show better battery life - at least for the 6+.  I am in the midst of updating my devices to iOS 8.1.1 - and will have a better feel of any issues personally next week - but My wife did say today it seemed slower on the iPad Mini with iOS 8.1.1 vs 7.1.2 - or really as she put it - The changes you made slowed this down - thanks

I had others reporting where updating to 8.1.1 - solved issues they were having - like with Bob B in Hamilton Ohio - where some apps that were stuck and not installing are now installed after the update.

    http://fortheloveoftech.com/2014/11/18/apple-seeds-

    ios-8-2-beta-developers/

And this is exciting - no sooner did Apple release iOS 8.1.1 to the public - then they turn right around and release iOS 8.2 Beta 1 to Devs.

Seems the major reason for this beta is to support Apple Watchkit.  Which Apple just released the Dev kit for - as they said they would in November.

    According to Apple's Phil Schiller

quote With the iOS 8.2 beta SDK, developers can now start using WatchKit to create breakthrough new apps, Glances and actionable notifications designed for the innovative Apple Watch interface and work with new technologies such as Force Touch, Digital Crown and Taptic Engine, unquote

    12:54

    http://www.theverge.com/2014/11/18/7243085/most-

    important-apple-watchkit-discoveries

As with any good SDK - there are lots of bits of info we can learn about the Apple Watch that were not previously known.  The Verge had a nice collection of things we have learned about the Apple watch now that said SDK is out. Some of those key ones are

1 - An iPhone is required almost all the time.  Essentially a Watch App is a complement to your iOS device - at least to start.  And code for the most part will be executed on the iPhone.

    2. However - from Apple quote "Starting later next year, developers will be able to create fully native apps for Apple Watch. unquote.  Later next year in Apple terminology means December 2015 or there a bouts.

    3. There are two different resolutions - the 38 mm AW will be 272 x 340 pixels.  The 42 MM will be 312 x 390 pixels.

    4. There will be two type of Notifications on the AW.  Short look which is just seen briefly when you raise your wrist.  The App icon, app name and a brief message.  And then if the person keeps their wrist raised long enough the screen changes to a quote long look notification unquote - which will provide more info and is more customizable - plus the App icon and name move to the top of the screen and are shrunk in size.

    5. No Custom Gestures - At least to start - Apple gives a pre determined set of gestures and the initials apps must conform.

    6. Maps are static and non-interactive.  No scrolling map as you walk down the street.

    7. Videos not so much - But images are ok.  So Porn on wrist will be limited to Static images or gifs.

    8.  There is a new font - it is call San FranCisco and it will be all the rage on keynote presentations come 2015.

Essentially the way to think of Apps for AW in early 2015 is that the AW becomes a second screen for the iPhone it is tethered to wirelessly.  Processing is done on the iPhone for the most part - and the AW is more for displaying info and accepting User input via Apples predefined gestures or pushed of buttons or turns of the Digital crown.

Later on 2015 - will be when devs will be able to take the popular apps on the Pebble that are stand alone and port them over to Apple Watch.  Which means 2,000 stop watch apps before Christmas 2015.  Yeah.

Now to convince the Devs for the Tii App to add in Apple Watch control.  With support for per episode artwork on the watch face.  I might need to learn the SDK for that one.

We have a new sponsor today and that is Casper - who is an online retailer and manufacturer of Premium mattresses for a fraction of the price you are used to paying.

Have you ever purchased a mattress by sitting on it for just a few minutes at the store only later to regret it.  That happened with us for my Oldest son's mattress.  We thought we purchased a good mattress - but oh my - we learned we did not - we would lay down with him to get him to go to sleep and as we tried to get up he would hear us and feel us moving and would wake up - very very frustrating. But we were stuck with the Mattress -  However With Casper you get a 100 day risk free trial period.  You don't like it you get your money back and they come and pick it back up.  That said - the mattress they sent is great and is definitely not going back. It is a mix of Latex foam and Memory foam. No noisy springs to wake up your kid or significant other when you get up - which is also nice for those 2AM visits to the cookie jar or ice cream tub.

HERE is why I really love this mattress When we received our Casper mattress for my son - the first three nights he slept through the whole night - The last time he slept 3 nights in a row through the whole night - yeah that would be NEVER - not even in the womb.

Casper did an incredible job on the engineering and feel of this mattress - I have slept on it as well and it is a really great sleep. Actually the issue I have now if I need to get him asleep is I tend to fall asleep.

But just as important the pricing is really great as well.

Twin Mattresses are just $500, they also have Twin XL for $600, Full for $750, Queen for $850 and then King and Cal King - for  $950.  That is less than half the price my Parents just paid for their King sized mattress and they can't stand their mattress.  Like I said you have 100 days to return it risk free.

This is an american made mattress with delivery right now for the US and Canada only and it is free delivery. When said mattress is delivered - it is from UPS - in a squarish box that you think no way is there a mattress in there - But you get a cool little tool to cut open the package and the mattress opens up and expands to form.  We had friends over when it came and they really loved watching it open up.

And Yes - the Mattress box is now a fort for the kids in their play room.

As they say You spend 1/3 of your life in bed - ok maybe more if you have Apple TV and Netflix in bedroom or if you use tinder.  And for the cost of an iPad - is it not worth getting the best nights sleep possible - and that is what you will get with Casper or what your kids will get.  Again to Save $50 off of the prices I mentioned go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code t i i - all lower case on the promo code.  again casper dot com / tii - promo code tii to save $50 - thanks Casper for the great mattress for my son and for sponsoring this show.

Hi Rob,which carrier do you use at the moment please, thank you. Ricky.

I am using T-Mobile - a couple of the reason I choose T-Mobile - Pricing - for me and my Wife.  That was a key one.  And also the ability to use Wifi Hotspotting - with no need to jailbreak - that has already helped me out a bunch.  And well T-Mobile in the US seems to be willing to allow what ever new features Apple rolls out.  Unlike AT&T and Verizon.

    Hi Rob

With the new search tool in the Photos app with iOS 8, it says you can search photos by date and time. Do you know how to search by time as nothing I am trying works? Also, it seems that you can't search by exact date, only a month or a year. Is there a way to do this as well?

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community with lots of comments that went up since the last episode came out is from Giuseppe Marino - who was offering up a tip for Touch ID and how to improve its accuracy.  Then there were a bunch on comments - but the tip that Per Francisco and talked about in the past - What you should do to improve accuracy if you are having issues - is go to  Settings then Touch ID and then simply place your finger on the sensor until it recognizes it and do that again and again.  This does seem to improve accuracy.  Thanks for the post Giuseppe and the feedback Francisco.

Another Post from Chris in London was about Sony announcing a new camera sensor the Exmor RS IMX320 which will be ready to ship in April 2015 - This could bring DSLR quality auto-focusing a 21 Mega Pixel CMOS sensor and 4K video recording to the next iPhone if used.  So there we go the start of iPhone 6S rumors - Thanks Chris.  Expect Rumors about the next iPhone in Jan / Feb time frame talking about an un-named source saying the next iPhone will have basically those specs.  Hoping we would have forgotten by then.  So remind me when I re-report it - I had forgotten.  Thanks

    free-apps-in-the-app-store-with-a-new-get-button

A minor change in the App store - Free Apps no longer say Free - but rather Get.  No official word on why the change - but if I was to put money on the reason for the change - it is likely because many Free Apps are not Free - they have in app purchases - like recently my son asking to spend $5 for a sleigh in Jet pack joy ride.  I was like - Ahhh No.  Any way - looks to be that Apples Lawyers stepped in.  And the next time you look at the App Store app you will either see the price for an app or if it is Free - it will now say Get.

Seems there are some reports and growing numbers there of - that some people with iPhone 6pluses are getting Blurry photos - even when the subject is not moving and you are not moving - it looks as if some one was.  I have not seen this issue - except in really low light. I tried to get blurry photos by just using one hand turning HDR on and then off and then auto - then taping on the screen and then pushing the button.  The pictures were not blurry for me.  But if you have a 6 plus and are getting blurry pics most if not all of the time - go and see your local apple store - seems like a small % of users are having this problem and a small % of iPhone owners can quickly become a big number.

The Latest in the GTAT / Apple Soap opera has Apple telling Mesa AZ officials it is committed to bringing jobs and manufacturing to the area.  This is the quote I find most interesting from Mesa City Manager Chirstopher Brady - quote They’ve indicated their commitment to us: They want to repurpose that building and use it again unquote

Re-Purporse - as in use for a different purpose as in no more Sapphire.  Not that there was really any hope chance of that happening - but I think that quote sums it up - the plant Apple purchased to make Sapphire in will be used for something else.  Maybe final assembly of full size Apple TV -  Ok - Just kidding.  Kinda.

    memory-efficient-android-heres/

Thanks to Matt for this next one.

This is for all of you out there with that annoying Android Friend or Relative.  The post is titled iOS is twice as memory-efficient as Android Here's why -  and it is from cult of Mac via a post from Quora.  In a nut shell - iOS devices run better than Android devices with 2x the memory because Android apps use Java and need all the extra RAM to do garbage collection.  Which is a process of recycling memory once an Android App is done using it. With Android you need four or eight time more memory than you are actually using to be efficient.  But when the memory becomes constrained performance goes way down.

Per iOS - no need for Garbage Collection - it was designed to avoid that sort of processes - it just needs the memory it needs and not more.

And the issue with more memory is more battery drain.

So next time that annoying Android fan boy says something about the iPhone only having 1GB of memory let them know performance wise - 1GB of iOS RAM results in more performance than 3GB of RAM for Android.

Which I guess for Tablets means the 2GB in the iPad Air 2 is better than 6GB of RAM in an Android Tablet.

    one-trick-pony-223009105.html

one Anal-ist thinks Apples Stock ride will come to an end in 2015

quote "It's losing market share like crazy. It's becoming a one-trick pony. it is a phone company," said Bert Dohmen, president of Dohmen Capital Research.  Guess the best way to get attention is to say the opposite of everyone else.  He said that iPad and iPhone sales are down.  Well he is half right - iPad sales are down - but definitely not iPhone sales.  So already he qualifies for how wrong were they.

Per Apple being a one trick pony - it has one really big Pony - but there are others - the iPad - which granted sales are down yr-yr - mostly shed to people upgrading to the iPhone 6Plus and not needing an iPad - plus old iPad's still work great - including first gen.  Expect iPad sales to decline for another year or so.

But Apple sales for computers are up.  And there will be the Apple Watch and there is Beats headphones.

Yes the iPhone line is becoming bigger and bigger - and if next year iPhone sales drop yr-yr do to a lack of compelling reasons to upgrade - a very possible scenario - then yes there will be a pull back.  The question I guess is how high does Apple stock get between now and end of January - when Apple releases this quarters sales numbers and the iPhone becomes an even bigger % of overall revenue - and fears of that big pony getting sick send the stock dropping.  Yup the bigger the gap between iPhone and iPad sales - the bigger the worry will be.

    Hi Rob,

I've upgraded from the 5 to the 6 Plus, and while I love my new device, it's a bit clunky when I run.  I used to just carry my 5 in my hand while running but I feel like I'm going to drop my 6 Plus so I'm considering wearing an arm band instead.  Would you mind asking the community which arm band they use and recommend?  I'm having a hard time finding many for the Plus.

Well I received a kickstarter product I back - nope not the SOS Charger - which I am still waiting on - while he is busy shipping units to retailers and not to backers - Bad form.  Sorry but Backers should be the first ones to receive the units.  Not retailers - I realize it may be a financial necessity - but it still does not make it ok.  It is a slap in the face of the backers when they see the product they are waiting for - available in stock on a retailers shelves.

That said the one I did get that was funded earlier this year is the Legion Meter - I will talk more about this one on a later episode after I full test it out.  But so far it seems to be working as advertised.

    https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/bluesmart-world-s-first-

    smart-connected-carry-on

Thanks to Michael for this next one.  Which is another Take an everyday item and add the ability to charge up iOS devices and then get over a million dollars in pledges.  Remember when they took that cooler and added a bunch of features - yeah this time some folks did that with a Carry On suit case.  It is the Bluesmart over at indiegogo.  Actually the projects full name is Bluesmart: World's first smart Connected Carry-on

Per their description quote Bluesmart is a high-quality carry-on suitcase that you can control from your phone, like a boss. From the app you can lock and unlock it, weigh it, track its location, be notified if you are leaving it behind and find out more about your travel habits. You can also charge your phone 6 times over with a built-in battery. unquote

Pricing on this was $195 - then sold out - then $215 - then sold out - then $235 then sold out and not is $260.  Yeah not seeming like such a bargain.

They had a goal of $50,000 - as I mentioned they raised over 1 Mil so far.

There are a whole bunch of neat features and back in my 150,000 Plus miles a year traveling days - I am sure I would have been all over this.

There is a built in scale in the handle - that tells you on your iOS device how much it weighs.

You can lock and unlock the suitcase from your iOS device.

There is location tracking.  And some handy compartments for your iPad and Laptop.

Search for Bluesmart one word at indie  go go dot com or in the show notes for Ep 328.

I mentioned the Pearl Compact Mirror and USB rechargeable battery Pack on the last episode and that I funded it and then the project was Paused slash stopped by Kickstarter due to a DMCA Copyright complaint.

Well I read that Copyright notification at Kickstarter - and Wow - is All I can say.  Unless there is something they are not showing - I don't see how Kickstarter could have paused it from that letter / notification - It is not a valid DMCA takedown notice - not in the least.

Again maybe there is something more behind the scenes that was also supplied to kickstarter - but based on what Kickstarter is showing - there is no reason to have stopped this project - not with that wording.  FYI - there is specific wording needed for a proper DMCA takedown notice - and this letter was not it or even close.

    40:37

    https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/pearl-compact-

    mirror-usb-rechargeable-battery

And you know what the folks running this project felt the same way and even went over and opened an Indie gogo project for this.  So if you are interested in the Pearl - You can go now to Indie go go and fund this.  If you are not sure what the Pearl is go back to Ep 327 around the 38:24 mark to hear about it.

The good news is on Indie go go they have already raised an additional $16k plus of funding - which means they hit a stretch goal and will have 2.1 A output now available for faster charging.  And if they hit 30k on Indie go go - then we get a free Microfiber Pouch.

They did say if you already pledged at Kickstarter - keep your pledge there - and do not cancel or double order.  But for new pledges now - go to indie go go dot com

and search for Pearl or look in the show notes for ep 328.

Ok - I really really did not want to talk about this one - but lots of you sent in links and it was covered on lots of blog posts.

It is the XOO Belt by Nifty and it is on IndieGogo.  This is a Battery Pack in your belt and belt buckle for charging your iPhone when it is in your pocket.

Alright - so let me get this straight - I am supposed to wear this battery pack near my groin that is going to get nice and hot when charging my iOS device in my Pocket getting nice and hot.  Ummm not for me or any other man looking to keep up is count if you know what I mean.

Oh and when you go to the indie gogo page - it has in bold text - Say hello to our flex Beast.  And they are talking about a belt so ummm point towards ones nether regions they are basically saying Say hello to our flex beast - Oh my

Pricing for this is $155 bucks - ummm Yeah.  Well they are at over $30k in funding towards a goal of $50k - and have until December 18th at 11:59 PM PT for funding to reach the goal.

If for some reason this idea actually sounds appealing to you - search for XOO Belt at Indie Gogo dot com or in the show notes for Ep 328 to learn more.

    http://www.amzer.com/crusta/

For the first 6 weeks of having the iPhone 6 plus - I went around naked - well the Phone not me - but in many ways I felt more vulnerable and uncomfortable with the iPhone being naked then if I was.  I did not let my boys use it other than on the sofa surrounded by carpet.  The naked 6 plus just seems like it wants to jump out of your hands.  During that time I waited for some cases to get to me - and finally they did around the end of October - and tried a few out - and the one I settled on and am using now is the Crusta from Amzer - links in the show notes - but Crusta is spelled - C R U S T A.  I like this one as it is a good deal of protection.  Or as they say 4 Layers of Army grade protection.  Ok - a little heavy on the marketing hype there guys.

With this case you get a Glass Screen Protector.  Which actually was really easy to put on with the tools and instructions they gave and did not have bubbles under it.  Huge plus on that.

Next they have two layers of the case.  I went with Red on the outside and Blue on the inside - Yes the Colors for the Dayton Flyers.  But you have 7 outside colors and 6 inside colors to choose from - Some quick Array math says that is 42 different color combos to choose from.

The things I like about the case - one the buttons are just as easy to push for volume and power as when there is no case - something not always true with cases.  Although the button for the mute is a little tough to tell if it was slid or not.  Another thing I liked it has built in dust protector plugs for the Lightening and headphone jacks - I keep my iPhone in my pocket top down - meaning the ports are at the top and this keeps out dirt and lint.  And most importantly for me - there is a raised lip around the edge - meaning if your drop it on the ground the glass will not hit on a flat surface like concrete or blacktop.  Obviously if you have gravel or rocks where your drop it all bets are off.  But again it does come with a tempered glass protector.

One thing to note - this case does make the 6 Plus feel like the 6 plus plus - it is a substantial case - hence the good level of protection - but that protection and added lip does mean an increase in size to an already big phone.  So more then ever the 6 Plus feels like a tablet.  That all said - I do feel much less stress and anxiety using this case especially when I give it to the kids - which I did at the pool - where the iPhone 4S was once shattered.

It also comes with a belt clip holster - not something I used - but if you are into that kind of thing - it is part of the package.

Pricing for this is $45.  Tell you what - they sent me an extra case.  If you tweet out a link to this episode or mention it on Facebook - and send me a link to the tweet or Facebook post - I will pick a winner and send out the case to you.  I will pick one winner randomly after the next episode.  So again tweet a link to Ep 328 or Put up a Facebook post - or if you can't do either - then write a review of the show in iTunes and again let me know about the post or review via email - and I will enter you in a chance to win this case.  Since I am paying the postage - limit to US Residents only - sorry.

    foods-mcdonalds-walgreens/

Well some early results are in on how Apple pay is doing and at Mcdonalds - Apple Pay is already 50% of its tap to pay transactions.  Same with Walgreens.   Whole Foods put some numbers forward saying it already processes more than 150,000 Apple Pay Transactions.

And article in the NYtimes pointed out these tid bits - but also pointed out that Apple pay is still far from being a dominant payment system - you think.  It is only a month old and only on the 6 and 6Plus.  But early signs from some key stores do look good.

    Hi Rob,

In response to Home Depot and Apple Pay question in Tii episode 0327.

I've used Apple Pay at Home Depot a few times and it works flawlessly. In the self checkout line, I chose credit as the method of payment and just kept my finger on the iPhone home button and the transaction went through with a problem. I've also used it at BJ's, and McDonalds.

    Regards,

Gentlemen thank you and I am happy to say the Home Depot in Overland Park also had ApplePay working fine - oddly enough there was no symbol or sign that it supported Apple Pay or NFC - I just selected pay via Credit card at the self checkout line and then laid the iPhone 6 Plus on the screen for the credit card swipe and it worked.

    Hi Rob,

I've trained several cashiers on how it works in the past few weeks!

Had an interesting experience at a McDonald's drive through. When I got to the window and told the cashier, "I'd like to use apple pay", she said, "Oh you want to add on two apple pies?".

Still a lot of work to do! :)

    Regards,

Yeah sadly right now - the local McD - does not support Apple pay in the Car line - just in the store.

Hey Rob, I just wanted to comment about what I would love to see come to Apple Pay. It would be awesome if that, not only you got the totals of your transactions in Passbook but, you also got a detailed receipts of what you just purchased. Totally paperless transaction! Then you would have all your receipts in one place. Also, have a print feature that allowed you to print which recipes you needed for your taxes or whatever.

    Regards,

Hi Danny - While I agree that would be a nice option - I think Apple is trying hard to keep away from getting that data - they are pushing Privacy and Security along with ease of use as the the three core elements of Apple Pay - and collecting that data would seem to weaken the Privacy item.

    Hi Rob,

So my experience with Apple has been awesome, funny and down right pure magic to cashiers. One of my experiences was at BABIES "R" US. I asked the cashier did their particular store support Apple pay, he said no to my surprise, as I waited for him to ring me up, their it was the symbol of truth(NFC pay pass came on the accepted pay screen). So I went for it, to his surprise it worked. He was like, "well a guy tried it before you and it didn't work. I laughed and said under my breath"must of been a android phone"as I walked off. My next try was at McDonald's. I didn't ask if they supported Apple pay this time, I let her do her cashier thing and casually put my phone to the payment pad and "walla" paid in full. The ladies reaction after watching me do this was nothing short of amazement. She asked "how did I do that?what phone did I have? Is the iPhone the only phone that could do that?" She got so distracted by the Apple magic, her manager was trying to get her attention for something else that she was suppose to be doing. This thing that Apple does where they implement meaningful things in our life's is nothing other then pure genius.

    Regards,

    Saul L

    permacookie-stops-tracking-customers-internet-usage-for-now.html

Thanks Dr. John for this next one. Which is that AT&T killed off using the Permacookie for now.  The Permacookie was a way at the network level for AT&T to track where you went on the web - but unlike regular cookies you can turn off - what AT&T was doing was something you have no say over.  The reason for Permacookies is simple - So Advertiser can see what sorts of things you might be interested in and serve up related ads to you.  And again unlike with regular cookies - with permacookies there is no way of removing or blocking them.  It is all carrier side.

Now before you get all mad at AT&T for doing this at all - realize - Verizon is still doing this.

Actually if you are on Verizon and don't want to be tracked per what you do on the web - then you need to get a VPN or use Wifi or go to Sprint or T-mobile.

Also while AT&T said their initial testing is done - the did not say if this project is done as well - actually saying it quote may still launch a program to sell data collected unquote via permacookies.

Guess you need to ask if you value privacy or not in your actions.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote “Here are four reasons why I don’t think Apple’s stock will see $700 again:

    1. Growth in phones is slowing as competition increases

    2. Margins are shrinking

    3. Apple is losing its innovative edge

    4. Apple may no longer be a growth story”

This week we have promo codes for the iBook called Letting the butterflies go. Here is the written review from the Author -

Hi, I just released a comic book memoir to the iBook store in which all the drawings were created on the iPad. I spent the last three years working full-time on the project, importing the digital drawings into Adobe InDesign to create the layouts.  The book is called "Letting the Butterflies Go" and is in two volumes. Volume one is called "Pandora" and is 220 pages. Volume two will be released shortly and is just over 200 pages. Both are in full-color.

"Letting the Butterflies Go" depicts my memories: some bright, some gray, some very dark. The lavishly illustrated book immerses the reader in an intense experience not soon forgotten.Regards, "MMJ."

Well thanks to MMJ for her review of her ibook  Letting the butterflies go  and for sending in the promo codes to give away.  Folks if you would like a chance for a promo code for this IBOOK - send an email to todayinos at gmail dot com and put BUTTERFLY in the subject line.

A QUICK REMINDER if you are an App developer or an iBook Author email me if you want your app or iBook featured in the promo give away segment We Just need the 5 promo codes or more to give away. simply email me at today in ios @ gmail.com and please include a 60 sec or less audio review of your app or iBook - indicating you are the dev or author.  Also when you send in the promo codes - please make sure to let me know when they expire.

    about-wirelurker-malware

So Apple had a couple of Malware / trojan issues that made news the past two weeks.  The first one that broke was about malware called Wirelurker that a who bunch of sites jumped up and down about saying see here is Malware for iOS and making it sound like almost the end of the world for iOS.  Really any article you read or may read about Wirelurker that makes it out to be a real threat - is just completely link baiting.  Who this affected was those in China accessing a 3rd party App store for Mac's and downloading what they new to be pirated software of popular titles for their Mac.  Then once installed - it would wait until you connected and iOS device via a USB cable and then it would attack your iOS device - if it was Jailbroken it was able to install a bunch - if you were not - it could do just a little bit.  But the long of the short - if you were downloading pirated software for your mac from a 3rd party App store in China and you got infected - GOOD you deserved to.  And shame on you for downloading pirated software.  This really is a non issue and Apple actually responded quickly to this quote issue unquote saying the following

quote "We are aware of malicious software available from a download site aimed at users in China, and we've blocked the identified apps to prevent them from launching. As always, we recommend that users download and install software from trusted sources." unquote

Anyone affected by this and looking to me for sympathy - yeah - keep on looking.   This is one of those things you had to try really really hard to get infected by.

    http://www.fireeye.com/blog/technical/cyber-exploits/2014/11/

    masque-attack-all-your-ios-apps-belong-to-us.html

The second security issue to make news is actually one you need to be aware of and is the one that really is an issue.

If you think it is strange these two stories broke at the same time - the second story broke because the company FireEye - that discovered this in July and reported it to Apple - was sitting on it - and then when they saw the PR being generated by Wirelurker got jealous and did their own release.  I kid you not - here is what they wrote on the blog

quote  We have notified Apple about this vulnerability on July 26. Recently Claud Xiao discovered the “WireLurker” malware unquote

Yes they mention the other exploit in their post.  That Said - Apple had multiple iOS releases since July and should have addressed this issue.

So what is it that FireEye discovered - well they call it Masque Attacks.  Essentially here is how it works - the forces of evil will send out a link saying hey you need to update some popular App and you follow that link to a site they set up - and then using the enterprise Ad-hoc provisioning they can replace any app on your iOS device - and it usually is not the one they said they were updating.   For example it may say upgrade Flappy Birds - but when you go to do the upgrade it is the Gmail app or a banking app that gets upgraded.  This can affect any non-native app on your iOS device.

The issue exists because iOS 7.1.1 and later does not enforce matching certificates for apps.  So basically what happens is the evil folks replace a good app with one that is malware infested and can be used to collect data from your device.  Even making the UI look the same - which clearly is not good for any apps that deal with your financial info.

So how do you keep from being a victim of this attack?

    According to FireEye

    quote

iOS users can protect themselves from Masque Attacks by following three steps:

    1. 1. Don’t install apps from third-party sources other than Apple’s official App Store or the user’s own organization
    2. 2. Don’t click “Install” on a pop-up from a third-party web page,  no matter what the pop-up says about the app. The pop-up can show attractive app titles crafted by the attacker
    3. 3. When opening an app, if iOS shows an alert with “Untrusted App Developer”, click on “Don’t Trust” and uninstall the app immediately

    unquote

This one I consider an issue - as it can trick innocent users into upgrading.  Most of you listening would likely figure something bad is going on - but my mom or wife - not so much.

Of course I may be making this out to be more of an issue than it really is -  the folks at Endgadget had the following to say

    quote

We've reached out to Apple for its response to the flaw. Whatever its solution may be, the practical threat to your iOS gear is relatively low. Perpetrators effectively have to hit the jackpot; they not only need the privileges to install an untrusted app over the web, but your explicit permission. Apple can also disable enterprise apps by revoking certificates, so outbreaks are likely to be limited. You'll still want to exercise caution, but you'll likely be fine so long as you stick to downloading from the App Store.

    unquote

But now that it is public knowledge and the details are out on how it works - expect other forces of evil to quickly work to get out more of these targeted attacks.

Not sure what Apple was waiting on for this one - but hopefully iOS 8.1.1 has a fix for it and is released ASAP.

    developer-beta-of-ios-8-1-1-including-fixes-and-improvements

    Hi Rob -

I updated my iPad 2 and iPhone 5S to iOS8 as soon as it was released. The iPhone runs fine, but the operation of my iPad has become strange. Operation is sometimes halty while trying to open apps or attempt to navigate screens.

A prime example is when I try to open Angry Birds Rio when the screen goes black and I usually have to reboot my iPad to try again. During that reboot my lock screen seems to hang to black momentarily too. What is going on. Is there a fix?

    Ed K

    Columbus OH

Well Ed that leads us into this next story from Michael and others.  Which is that Apple has already done a beta release to devs for iOS 8.1.1

Now it also looks like the beta release is no longer available in the iTunes Dev Center and that it looks to have gone away just about the same time that news broke about Masque Attack vulnerability - That could be a co-oincednce and iOS 8.1.1 will be released this week or next or it could mean Apple said - Oh noooo - and pulled it back to add in the patch for the Masque attack.

One of the main things 8.1.1 beta said it addressed was performance improvements for the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S.

Hopefully more on this story shortly.  And really don't be surprised if 8.1.1 is out by the time you hear this.  Also don't be surprised if it is not - and it was pulled back to attack the Masque attack.  Obviously I am hoping for the later.

Also one of thing 8.1.1 is also supposed to fix is the vulnerability used in the latest Pangu Jailbreak. If you want to jailbreak - update to 8.1 ASAP and do not update to 8.1.1 when available.

    Hey Rob,

Here's a good tip for finding places that will accept Apple Pay. There's a free app in the App Store calledMasterCard Nearby that you can use to show retailers that have contactless payment, which Apple Pay works with. It may not be all-inclusive, but a good approximation. Thanks for the show.

    Hi Rob,

On Ep 326, a caller mentioned having limited iCloud storage and not being able to back up. There are a couple of things I would mention.

First, under iCloud->Storage->Manage Storage, you can choose what gets backed up on the device. Maybe turn off some apps that store data you don't need backed up.

Second, make sure you don't have backups lingering for devices you no longer own or renamed. Those iCloud backups remain until you delete them.

Third, photos and video generally take up the majority of space for me. If you are using iCloud Drive that space is shared among all of your devices. Your photo library won't back up per device any more because all of your photos are already in iCloud and on all of your devices.

My backups went from 5-6 gig to well under 2 gig per device when I enabled iCloud Drive. My iPhones back up about 700 Meg now and the iPads are about 1.5 Gig. I have a 12 gig Photo Library. Using optimized storage, even with all photos and videos on all devices now, iCloud Drive uses less data per device than photo library did.

    Regards,

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community with lots of comments that went up since the last episode came out is from Myron Uecker - who asked the following

Quote Am I the only one finding Swype to be slower than just typing? Whenever I use Swype I have to think about the word in advance. It seems to come more natural when I'm typing the words out. Of course, I generally just use two hands and I think Swype is better for single-handed use once you master it. unquote

There were a bunch of responses most were agreement with Myron's comments.  A couple said they like swype but there is a learning curve.  But most people seem to prefer the Apple native keyboard.  There was also a vote in there for Flesky.  Long of the short - it sound like there is a learning curve for swype and you need to commit to it for a couple of weeks to get through that learning curve.  That is a pretty big request of users.  Maybe the key reason it is so popular on Android is that the native keyboard is so bad.  And on iOS with the new Predictive keyboard the difference between it and Swype is not that big - and Swype has a bigger learning curve.  Thanks to all that responded on that.

    - And since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Folks Go to today in iOS dot com slash community to join in.

    http://www.chupamobile.com/blog/2014/10/23/apple-requires-

    ios8-sdk-64-bit-support-february-1st/

If you are an App dev - and your current app you are working on does not use the iOS 8 SDK and support 64 bit - it will need to if you plan on submitting it to iTunes Feb 1st or later.   Similar to last year when they made you go with iOS 7 SDK - so that is not really news - but this time they are saying no more 32 bit only apps for review - they must be universal - Again this is for submitting to review for new Apps or version of current apps - this will not affect those apps already in the store.

Even if you don't plan on releasing a new version of your app any time soon - it is a good idea to update to the iOS 8 / universal build - that way if you have to release an update to fix some unknown bug you are ready to go.

    http://www.apple.com/ipad-air-2/specs/

From Michael The iPad Air 2 has 2 mic holes and so close to each  by the same corner, how come no one is talking about that! And why did they ditch the switch!?

Michael - I would guess the ditching of the switch is just an iPad thing - for the iPhone I fully expect the switch to be around for quite some time - as the phrase please silent your phones - is not going away any time soon.  And having a switch to quickly mute your phone would be a huge info if removed.

However removing the switch on your iPad -yeah almost no one complained about that.

Per the mic holes - I have no idea why they are close - but there are also mic holes two of them near the camera as well. So lots of Mic orrifices to go around on the iPad Air 2.

    says-apple-used-bait-and-switch-tactic.html

Oh more dirt in the GTAT bankruptcy hearing.  GTAT claims quote With a classic bait-and-switch strategy, Apple presented GTAT with an onerous and massively one-sided deal in the fall of 2013, When GTAT’s management expressed obvious concerns to Apple regarding the deal terms during the contract negotiations, Apple responded that similar terms are required for other Apple suppliers and that GTAT should ‘Put on your big boy pants and accept the agreement.’” unquote

Ok - Not sure what rule of Business negotiation it is - but when someone tells you to put on your big boys pants and accept the deal - the appropriate reply is to flip them the Bird and stop the negotiations.

Of course Apple countered saying that it quote “committed to put at risk up to $2 billion in connection with this project” unquote Apple went on to say that it bent over backward to work with GTAT . Apple even made payments when GTAT failed to meet deadlines

Oh this story is going to provide great sound bites for months if not years to come.

And speaking of GTAT File this next one under - Wow never saw that one coming category. And it is that the SEC is investigating GTAT's Execs for suspicious trading activity. As we said previously on the show - We are not saying those stock dumps leading up to Apples Sept 9th announcement by the CEO and COO of GTAT were insider trading - but they were insiders and they were trading. That the SEC is investigating this is really a shocker for no one.  The only shocker in this case is if the SEC finds they did nothing wrong and it was simply a coincidence they dumped all their stock right before it became public that Apple was not going to use their product on the iPhone which would then lead to their need to file for Bankruptcy.  Nope not saying it was insider trading - that's for the SEC to decide.

Thanks to Dr. John for this next one.

Are you starting to look for the perfect gift for yourself or someone you know that drives a lot - but a new car is out of the question - Well Pioneer released Apple Carplay for US and European Vehicle Dashboards.  Pioneer actually released a firmware update for five units in its NEX line - so you might already have it if you already have an NEX line system.

If you don't have one - then for just $700 to $1,400 dollars you can get one for your car.

If you are in Europe the product line is not called NEX - but rather AVIC - and AVH series - to see the specific ones look for the link in the show note titled Pioneer releases Apple CarPlay for Ep 327

If anyone has purchased this or updated the firmware to get CarPlay - please call in with a review.

Well I think Show me the Market Share was the quote because that is all I hear from the Android Fan boys - With Strategy Analytics reporting that Android captured 84% of Global Smartphone shipments in Q3 2014.  Apple was second with 12.3%.  What else did Strategy Analytics say well there was this quote The Android platform is getting overcrowded with hundreds of hardware brands, Android smartphone prices are falling worldwide, and few Android device vendors make profits. unquote

Show me the Market share baby.

Oh if you are curious about where the Money is - well that is mostly over on Apples side - Latest estimates have Apple well over 75% of the total profits of global smartphones.  Basically Apples Profits share is close to Android's Market share.  Which one would you rather have.

    Hi Rob,

Sauce Digital just launched a Kickstarter campaign to crowdfund the production of Spritebox - an iOS app for creating games on iPhone or iPad, without code.

Spritebox aims to put games creation at the fingertips of everyone.

    Best Regards

    Morgan Davies

    Director

    Sauce Digital

And if you search in Kickstarter for Spritebox - one word - you will find this project which has until December 3rd at 11:25 AM CT to get funded - which sadly it does not look like it will - as they have a goal of $45,000 Pounds and to date have raised less than 1,000 Pounds.

It is sad - it looked like a nice app slash tool for developing games.

Their description of their project is the following quote

Spritebox is a mobile gaming ecosystem for creating and playing games that, with your help, will launch on iPhone and iPad.

    The foundation of Spritebox is a mobile app, that provides;

    • A system for creating great games on your mobile device, with zero code.

I will not go over the awards or pricing - as again this one is not likely to happen - but if you are interested in this - I would suggest you go and fund it now and start spreading the word.

Search for Spritebox one word at kickstarter dot com.

    made-charge-case-for-iphone-6-and-iphone

Thanks to Michael for this next one. Which is yet another iPhone case. This time for the iPhone 6 and 6Plus

It is called The Acme made Charge Case - it had a very modest goal of $5,000 - and they have over $6,000 pledged - so this one is go.  You have until December 8th at 5:05 AM CT to fund it.

What is it about this case that is its point of differentiation - well it stores a lightening to USB cable in the back of the case behind the kickstand.  So it is a think case with a nice charge and sync cord available to you anytime.

Pricing on this is now $35 for one.  There are still some 2 for $50 pledges left as well.

As is normal - I am not the best salesperson on this - but if you would like to learn more look for The Acme Made Charge Case at kickstarter dot com or in the show notes for ep 327 at today in iOS dot com.

Thanks to Daniel Saul from the google+ community for the heads up on this next Kickstarter project.  Which is called the Pearl Compact Mirror and USB rechargeable Battery Pack - which you guessed it - is a Compact mirror / Rechargeable battery pack.  This one had a goal of $30,000 - not surprisingly they have blasted past that and are well over $40,000 and counting.  If you want in on this one you have until Wednesday December 3rd at 2:00 AM Central Time to pledge.

They have a few different colors - Red, Silver or Gold.  Pricing is $25 while they last.  And that gets you a unit by Christmas.  And yes - this is one I actually did fund.  Hey any chance I can get a Christmas Present for the wife - I am all over it.  And they are guaranteeing Christmas Delivery - for a few more units of each color.  I went with silver.   Shhhh - don't tell my wife.

Per the battery Pack - it is a 3000 mAh battery pack - and there is a light around the mirror - so it is actually a really nice compact as well.  Given my wife is often running low on her charge - I can see this as something she will get a lot of use out of. Assuming she reminds me she used it and it gets charged back up.

Per those behind this kickstarter project - they are also the same folks that did the iStick project that shipped earlier this year.

Search for Pearl at kickstarter dot com or in the show notes for ep 327 at today in iOS dot com

Ok -Breaking news on this project.  As I mentioned I funded this - and earlier today I received the following email from developers of this campaign

    quote

Thank you for being a backer of our Kickstarter project, Pearl™: Compact Mirror + USB Rechargeable Battery Pack.

We were just informed a few hours ago by Kickstarter Copyright that an individual filed a copyright infringement claim against our invention.

The claim is baseless, false and ridiculous. Unfortunately Kickstarter Rules requires us to file a counter-claim, which we just did, prior to sending this message.

We are now working with Kickstarter Copyright to resolve this matter as soon as possible, within the next few days, if not the next few hours. As we have reached our funding goal, we are still committed to producing the Pearls and get them delivered to the early birds before Christmas and the rest in January 2015.

Seems Microsoft is finally getting serious about their iOS Apps for Office.  They updated them to editing without an Office 365 subscription.  You do still need a Microsoft account - but it can be a free account.  Also - Excel, Word and PowerPoint apps are all now Universal.

Note that while the apps are free to use - there are quite a few features that will require an office 365 paid subscription.

This all said - you can also view and edit Excel, Word and Powerpoint Docs with Numbers, Pages and Keynote apps on your iOS devices.  And those apps are free.

HOWEVER - I would guess with Powerpoint - there are still issues when exporting from Keynote to Powerpoint - so if you are looking at needing to quickly review and make minor edits to a Powerpoint, Excel or Pages doc - these updates make that possible and for that reason if you are in the business world - you should at least download these apps to your iOS devices to have them ready.

    Hi Rob,

Sam's Club to offer iPhone 6 and iPad Air at $100 off during special sale event on Nov. 15

    Regards,

    Michael,

Thanks Michael for the heads up - I will either go over the black Friday / Thanksgiving specials next episode or the one I do the week of Thanksgiving.  But looks like Target and others are already leaking their special deals - again more later in the month.

Hello Rob, I really enjoy you podcast . I bought the app a few years ago, worth the money, I have paid for apps in the past and regretted it but I use your app all the time to listen to your show.  I DK if it's true but I heard is free now but does not bother me at all because I've gotten plenty of use out of it and much information keep up the good work.

I have a question for you Rob, I have a jailbroken iPhone five running iOS 7.0 .4. I have A lot of tweaks and apps I got from Cydia and they still work just fine.

The problem is I cannot find the Cydia icon anywhere, i've done spotlight search I even went page by page cannot find it anywhere. I have a bunch of repo's like sinful iPhone and others. So I am unable to download anything else from Cydia, as a previously stated, everything I downloaded previously still works. The main reason I jailbroke west to use my MyWi7 or tether me so I'm able to use my iPhone five as a hotspot for my iPad and it still works. Do you have any suggestions on how I can get the Cydia  icon back on my iPhone 5 ?

    Regards,

    Christopher T

    Hi rob,

I am on 7.1.1 and jailbreak. I want to upgrade to 8.1 and jailbreak. Is it safe? Should I do it? What are your thoughts about it?

    Thanks,

    Alon from Israel

Hi Alon - at this point probably best to update to iOS 8.1 and jailbreak before Apple releases 8.1.1 and probably breaks the Pangu jailbreak

Hi Rob what do you think about the Pangu8 jailbreak? There have been some recent updates to it. It looks like the biteSMS team is working on their app for it as well. I'm thinking that as soon as its available for the Mac, I may wait a few days for any updates and then go ahead and do it. Thoughts? I've always been a sucker for the aesthetic changes, themes and whatnot, available through jailbreak. If anyone else wants to chime in, please do.

    Regards,

    Ryan L

Well - if you are someone looking to jailbreak - good news Pangu now has both Mac and Windows versions available to do the Jailbreak.

Some quick advice - if you are on iOS 7.x and jailbroken and wanting to upgrade to iOS 8 - now is the time before Apple goes to 8.1.1 - upgrade now to 8.1 and then re-jailbreak.

If you are thinking of it and are at 8.1 - when iOS 8.1.1 comes out - don't upgrade.

When you finally do go to jailbreak - make sure you iPhone is in Airplane mode and Find my iPhone is turned off.  And well of course make sure you did a full back up before hand and all apps you forced quit before starting the Jailbreak.

Also don't be surprised if the App quits out on your a few times - and takes a while. I tried to do the Jailbreak tonight on my iPhone 4S before the show - mistake.  It seemed to lock up and get stuck on Step 2 of 6 in the jailbreak.

The software is pretty straight forward - you download the Mac or PC version then open on your computer.  IF on a mac - you may need to change your security settings to allow for opening of an app downloaded from the internet from a non trusted source.  Go to System Preferences select Security and Privacy and then select the little lock symbol in the lower left on the General screen and change Allow Applications downloaded from - Anywhere.  Once done with the Jailbreak remember to change that back to your old settings.

Then once done - go to the Cydia app and download your favorite JB Apps and Tweaks.  Like this recommendation.

    Hi Rob,

AppLocker is Back. Great to lock individual Apps. Unlike the Main Password Lock. Turn that off and lock each App that needs locking. Lock whole folders too. Lock on the Fly. Enter Jiggle Mode and touch the Lock to lock… and locks the AppLocker itself to prevent unwanted changes in Settings.

    Great Mod..

Thanks to Tash for the heads up on this next one.  Which is an article from TUAW about Apple pay how it is an accessibility tool.

They had a good quote from Steven Aquino who has cerebral palsey and he describes how Apple Pay makes it easier for him to pay for items at the store.

    quote

More than security and convenience, Apple Pay has another huge advantage: accessibility. I've used Apple Pay twice now since iOS 8.1 shipped last week, and it's been every bit as easy - and dare I say, magical - as Tim Cook hyped it to be at the September press event. But more than that, Apple Pay has the potential to be such an asset to the disabled. In my case, as someone with low vision and (mild) cerebral palsy, no longer do I have to fumble around my wallet trying to find my credit card or struggle with swiping my card into the terminal. All I do is pull my phone out of my pocket, rest my thumb on the home button, and I'm done. No eye strain, no dexterity issues, nothing. Just tag and go.

This is one thing we had not touched on previously about ApplePay - and Thanks again Tash for the heads up on this article.

    Hi Rob,

Firstly, awesome work on the “good vs. evil” title on the ApplePay PDF. I won’t go into details here, but the MCX implementation sounds like a really bad deal for customers, let alone customers who have trouble scanning bar codes. Even though I don’t have a device capable of it, I’m firmly hoping for Applepay all the way.

I called Apple when the battery replacement program for the iPhone 5 first came out, and the representative assured me that my battery would still be replaced, even after the two-year purchase date of my iPhone had passed. I don’t have an Apple store anywhere remotely close to school, and (wow, we’re in 2014) didn't feel comfortable without my phone for the ten business days it would have taken to do mail-in repair. I just went home and took it in last weekend and had it swapped with no trouble at all. Now my battery life is awesome; about a day and a half, without bluetooth on and I’m ready for the new Continuity features.

My customer service experience has always been great with apple.

    Regards,

    Chelsea

To the email bag an I paraphrase on this one:

    Hi Rob,

Did you just recommend people leave there stuff at the counter for an employee to have to put back? This will at the very least inconvenience workers and probably make them work late etc.

Ohhh - Good point - OVER TIME - the Bain of any company - I was just thinking about the missed sales opportunity - but OVER TIME is soooo much more effective - Good Point  - Thanks for pointing out that extra benefit of leaving it at the counter.

Of course some might think it is childish to leave it at the counter - but is it any more childish then turning off the NFC readers and saying sorry this is my toy and you can not play with it - just sayin.
