In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote “Apple’s innovation problem is real.  Rivals have caught up to Apple in the markets it once dominated, and the tech giant’s rumored future products appear to be more evolutionary than revolutionary.”

Julianne Pepitone and Adrian Covert, CNNMoneyTech, 8 September 2013

What is the catch up you speak of.  The rivals for the most part are selling crap.  And all the profits remain with Apple as a result - as more then enough people show they will spend a little extra to get a lot more  --  Just Sayin

I want to thank Barry M for the heads up on an issue with the Chitika Map from the last episode.  This is something I realllllly should have noticed - This is per the article about which states had the highest % of iPhone Traffic for their ad network - and one State I mentioned - and well featured is the state I live in Kansas.  What I did not notice - but Barry did - was that in the Chitika map - They have the state of Nebraska colored dark and labeled as Kansas and they labeled Kansas as Nebraska - Doooo.  You would think give you know I live in Kansas I would have noticed.  Per my defense - I did actually work on that one from the iPhone and I was just looking at state names - but still pretty embarrassed I did not catch it and worse for Chitika for messing it up. Per if Kansas was actually at the higher level or was it Nebraska - not sure.

Apple did finally release update iOS 8.1.3  As with any double dot update it is mostly geared  toward bug fixes and not feature adds.

Well, I'm sorry to say that 8.1.3 didn't fix the Spotlight bug on my iPhone 6 like they said it would. It's disappeared twice so far since updating, anyone else noticed this?

    Regards,

    Shanon

In our Google+ community - Tosin O posted the following:

Just downloaded iOS 8.1.3. Hitch-free. What has been your experience?

To which he had many responses.  Here are some of them:

    Bob Stacy

JAll good, no problems at all

    Marc Parrish

Right after I installed 8.1.3 Google + crashed

    Jerry Goldbaum

No problems. Spotlight search seems ok now.

    Nhon Huynh

My finger print reader is not working consistency anymore after the update to 8.1.3.

Is anyone else experiencing any issue unlocking your phone using the finger print?

    I have a iPhone 5s from Verizon.

    Nhon Huynh

I figure out that the finger print reader doesn't work when lighting cable is plugged in. Unplug it then it works again.

    Very weird. 8.1.3 bug.

    Nhon Huynh

Figure print sensor is working now(plugged in too). That was weird. I noticed it stopped working after an hour after I updated.

    So everything is fine now.

    Francisco Tapia

Noticing that some apps now pause their animation transitions, were in 8.1.2 they were smooth.

    Gail Allinson

    No problems with it.

    Stephen Long

    Seems fine to me :-)

    Bruce Paterson

    All was well.

Based on what I have read and seen - it is ok to update to 8.1.3 - As long as you don’t plan on jailbreaking - if you plan on jailbreaking as always don’t upgrade.

Also before you upgrade - make sure you follow my recommended steps - You can see them as a PDF in the Tii App - Go to the Episode list - then tap on PDF - and scroll to the bottom - and tap on Recommended Update Procedure.  Then tap on Open PDF.

It is highly recommended you do this before each update.

Per myself - I have not updated yet - One - I was traveling this past week - so I never do updates when traveling.  Two when I made it back - I had a choice Do the update and delay this episode - or get the episode out tonight.  I choose the later.  I will be updating tomorrow - and will also be doing the iTunes update and the latest updates for OS Ten Yosemite.  Lots of updates this past week.

If you had any issues with the latest update - email me today in iOS at gmail dot com and let me know what issues you had - also let me know if you did the update per my recommended steps.  Not that I would be judging or anything.

    http://tii.libsyn.com/apple-q4-2014-quarterly-report

Lets talk a little about Apple’s quarterly conference call.

Apple Did something they have not done in a long time - not since Steve was the CEO and totally were sandbagging Projections.  What Apple did was they blew everyones expectations including their own way out of the water.

Revenue, Profits, Earnings Per share, iPhone Sales - toasted all expectations.

Revenue was $74.6 Billion vs 57.6 Billion a year ago and 42.1 Billion last quarter.

Total Cash now is at 178 Billion up 22.7 billion for the quarter from 155.2 Billion

Apple Generated 33.7 Billion in Cash flow and returned over 8 billon via dividends and share buy backs last quarter.

Apples 18 billion in Profitst for the quarter was not just an all time record for Apple - it was an all time record for any public company in any quarter ever.

Yet the press for the last couple of years and even some still are negative on Apple

Here is a great quote from Ben Thompson  at stratechery.com

    Quote

last quarter Apple’s revenue was downright decimated by the strengthening U.S. dollar; currency fluctuations reduced Apple’s revenue by 5% – a cool $3.73 billion dollars. That, though, is more than Google made in profit last quarter ($2.83 billion). Apple lost more money to currency fluctuations than Google makes in a quarter. And yet it’s Google that is feared, and Apple that is feared for. unquote

I think that sums up the irrational and sometimes downright inept Tech and financial press when it comes to their reporting on Apple.

Now lets talk units sold.  Last quarters iPhone sales of 74.5 Million were way above even the most optimistic anal-ist which was Kirk Burgess from the Braeburn group who had guessed 71.5 Million.  The average estimate was 66.5 Mil  So Apple beat the average by 8 Million.  Oh and the dunce hat that goes to Uncle Gene Munster from Piper Jaffray with a laughable guess of 61 Million.  Remember folks - Uncle Gene gets paid lots and lots of money to follow Apple full time and figure out what Apple is going to report.

Per my predictions on iPhone sales - I was right in one way what I said was quote My guess is Apple sold how ever many they were able to make last quarter - with Apple saying that sales were constrained by supply - and they did not equal equilibrium until This month. but If I was guessing I would have said 69.2 Mil sold.  unquote.

Again I was right that apple sold how many they could make - which is what they said on the call - and they also said it was not until January when they reached equilibrium.  So this quarter will be all about demand - not supply.

For iPad sales - Apple reported 21.4 Million sold vs 26 Million a year ago and 12.3 Million last quarter.  So yes as expected it was a drop. But only 0.1 less than Anal-ists estimated in Average.   Colin Gillis from BGC Partners was closest to the mark with a guess of 21.2 Million iPads sold.

Furthest from the mark to low goes to Aaron C Rakers with a guess of 16.3 Million - and furthest from the mark too high were Peter Misek and Uncle Gene Munster.  both with a guess of 25 Million units.

So Yes - Often Wrong Uncle Gene - was the worst when it comes to iPhone predictions and one of the worst for iPad predictions - and he is getting paid for following apple why????  All I have to say is don’t trust your money with Piper Jarrray - Just sayin

Per Macs sold - Apple reported 5.5 Million Macs were sold last quarter vs 4.8 Mil the year ago quarter and 5.5 the previous quarter.  That number was right in line with Anal-ists estimates.

They would have sold one more mac last quarter if they had released an updated mac book pro - which I am really really waiting for.  Hopefully Apple intros the new Mac Book Pros soon.

Turning to Miscellaneous notes from the conference call.

    - 200,000 unit decline in iPhone channel inventory for the quarter vs an increase of a 1 Million units in the year ago quarter.  So the 74.5 Mil number is even more impressive vs last years sales.

iPhone sales for the quarter worked out to an average of >34,000 iPhones sold per hour for the full quarter.

    - iPhone ASPs were $687 increase of $50 from the year ago quarter.  So going from 32GB to 64GB for the middle tier paid off.

    - The 1 Billionth iOS device sold in November - it was an iPhone - which apple has - Which really is that a sale if Apple still has it?  Hmmmm.  Anyway - there are now well over 1 Billion iOS devices that have been sold.

Apple said there have been over 25 Million Apple TV’s sold to date.

    - USA Technologies made Apple Pay available at 200,000 locations -  vending machines and parking meters and kiosks and laundry machines.

    xx:xx

    http://mashable.com/2015/01/27/apple-watch-april/

And One more thing I learned from the Apple call is what early in the year means - what middle of the year means and what late in the year means.  As Tim was so nice to break that down.

Early in the year is Jan 1st to April 30th.  Middle of the year is May 1st to August 31st and late in the Year is September 1st to December 31st.  So remember that the next time Apples says a new product is coming early or mid or late this or next year.

We learned all about this because Apple said the Apple Watch would be launched in April and one of the anal-ists asked why it slipped from early in the year to April.  To which Tim then gave everyone Apples definitions previously mentioned.

If you would like to see some charts showing all time Sales of iPhone and iPads - go to the Tii App and look for the bonus content you will see a PDF with updates charts.

One thing you will start to see is that iPad sales combined for the trailing 4 quarters are now starting to drop vs how the iPhone was doing at the same point in its life.  I know Apple has said in the recent past that total iPad sales were better than iPhone sales at the same point in its life - that is no longer true.  This is not a negative on the iPad - I think it is just that the iPad’s useful life is much much longer - and as you are seeing if you own an iPad - there really is no reason to upgrade better then once every 3 to 4 or more years.  Our Original iPad is still used almost every day by my kids - and my Parents are using their original iPad every day for emails.

A couple of other notes from the call.

    HealthKit is now in over 600 apps;

The Swift development tools have been downloaded 11 million times

over 30 auto brands have signed up for CarPlay

over 750 banks and credit unions are signed up to Apple Pay.

And finally one of the most interesting stats of all - and that is Tim Cook said over 85% of new iPhone sales last quarter were to switchers with most coming from Android.  Huh?  Wow - I mean if that is really true - wow.  That could be a good reason why by Friday of this week apple Stock was up to a new all time high of $120 during the day - It finished the day at $117.16 - there was a sell off at the end of the day where people and robots were taking profits.  Still if you look at the end of its week - it was one of the better end of the week positions for the stock for a week where earnings were announced vs the beginning of that week at least for the last couple of years that is.

We are very happy to have Casper back as a sponsor - Casper is an online retailer and manufacturer of Premium mattresses for a fraction of the price you are used to paying.

Have you ever purchased a mattress by sitting on it for just a few minutes at the store only later to regret it.  That happened with us for my Oldest son's mattress.  We thought we purchased a good mattress - but oh my - we learned we did not - we would lay down with him to get him to go to sleep and as we tried to get up he would hear us and feel us moving and would wake up - very very frustrating. But we were stuck with the Mattress -  However With Casper you get a 100 day risk free trial period.  You don't like it you get your money back and they come and pick it back up.  That said - the mattress they sent is great and is definitely not going back. It is a mix of Latex foam and Memory foam. No noisy springs to wake up your kid or significant other when you get up - which is also nice for sneaking off at 2:00 AM to write some show notes because I thought of a snarky joke to work in the next episode.

HERE is why I really love this mattress When we received our Casper mattress for my son - the first three nights he slept through the whole night - The last time he slept 3 nights in a row through the whole night - yeah that would be NEVER - not even in the womb.

Casper did an incredible job on the engineering and feel of this mattress - I have slept on it as well and it is a really great sleep. Actually the issue I have now if I need to get him asleep is I tend to fall asleep.  And the nights I record episodes - the boys go and sleep with mom - so when I am done I can sleep on his bed now and my back is not all out of whack in the morning.

But just as important as quality is Pricing and the pricing is really great.   Twin Mattresses are just $500, they also have Twin XL for $600, Full for $750, Queen for $850 and then King and Cal King - for  $950.  That is less than half the price my Parents just paid for their King sized mattress and they can't stand their mattress.  Like I said you have 100 days to return it risk free. And if you go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code tii - you will save $50 off those prices.

This is an american made mattress with delivery right now for the US and Canada only and it is free delivery. When said mattress is delivered - it is from UPS - in a squarish box that you think no way is there a mattress in there - But you get a cool little tool to cut open the package and the mattress opens up and expands to form.

And Yes - the Mattress box is still a fort for the kids in their play room.

As they say You spend 1/3 of your life in bed - ok maybe more if you have Apple TV and Netflix in bedroom.  And for the cost of an iPad - is it not worth getting the best nights sleep possible - and that is what you will get with Casper or what your kids will get.  Again to Save $50 off of the prices I mentioned go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code t i i - all lower case on the promo code.  again casper dot com / tii - promo code tii to save $50 - thanks Casper for the great mattress for my son and for sponsoring this show.

    Hi Rob,

I found a way to help the 2 callers that were trying to get Siri to recognize their kids' name when spoken. I have the same problem. My daughter's name is Lorelei (pronounced Laura Lie) and Siri always messes it up. Here's what I did:

-Add your child to your contacts (may not be required but that's what I did).

-Go to your contact and "add related name." (Again, may not be necessary, but that's what I did.)

-Launch Siri and say, "That's not how you say [name]." She'll ask you to pronounce it and give you choices to pick from.

After doing that, it seems to be working for me. Hope it works for you.

    Regards,

    Lou V

P.S.: I hope your mom is feeling better after surgery. Best wishes.

    Hi Rob,

There was a frustrated caller that just wanted to Siri to allow him to dictate the name of his son Jamon, which is a difficult alternative spelling of a non-English word.

I figured out a way to get Siri dictation to recognize and spell the name correctly.

    See https://plus.google.com/108456183855650206431/

    posts/8aiTxexHMMi

    Regards,

    Keith

    Hi Rob,

Just create a contact with that name

Siri will use it first before trying to spell it her self

    Regards,

    Trucker Alex

    Hi Rob,

Here is how to handle Siri Spelling names wrong and to teach her/him..

First the persons name needs to be in your contacts. Spelt Correctly.

Do the following after writing down the way Siri thinks it should be spelled.

    Go into contacts.

Go to the contact you are working with.

    Go into "Edit"

Scroll down to "Add Field" and go into add field.

    Go into "Phonetic First Name"

Spell in this field the way that Siri spelled the contact name that you wrote down.

    Hit Done.

Now Siri will recognize your contact the way you say it. Siri will also spell it correctly now.

    Regards,

    - Chris in London

    Rob

In your episode 335, a couple of listeners had Siri issues with misspelling given names for family members. I recalled an earlier problem finding a contact with Siri and recalled a solution.

Here is that solution oto help Siri understand a name and spell it correctly - this should help.

    -------------------------

    Open Contacts.

Go to the contact you are working with. (Or create a new contact)

    Click "Edit"

Scroll down to "Add Field"; click it select "Phonetic First Name".

Spell in this field the way that Siri misspelled the contact name that you wrote down.

    Click Done.

    -------------------------

Now here is a wrinkle - you may have other names in your 1000+ Contact entries that phonetically sound alike. For example, Corrie, Cory, Kari, Carey, Keri.

The phonetic first name field can't resolve those problems.

    Regards

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came out was from Anthony McDonald who asked

Quote Who thinks the iPhone 5 will get ios9 Unquote

And the simplest answer to this is the 4S is getting support for iOS 8 - so YES the iPhone 5 will get support for iOS 9 - and if you take it one step further - ANY iOS device currently for sale will get support for iOS 9 - and the iPhone 5C has the same internals as the iPhone 5 - the only thing different is the case.  So Double Yes on the iPhone 5 getting iOS 9.

That said I hope iOS 9 is 99.9% focused on bug fixes and performance enhancements - New features are not nearly as important to me - then seeing the next iOS run better, faster and more reliably on the current hardware.

And since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Folks Go to today in iOS dot com slash community to join in.

One other thing mentioned in the Quarterly call and also sent in by a few of you - is that Stanfords iTunes U course for learning Swift Programming is now available.  So if you were one that has used the Stanford courses in the past to learn iOS development - good news - the Swift version is now available.

Are you an App Dev or someone doing beta testing for An App Dev - And WERE You someone that liked test flight?  I say Were as in past tense -a as on Feb 26th - Testflight will be grounded.  Apple Purchased the company that created test flight.  If you want to know what to do - look for the link titled Test Flight in the show notes for Ep 336.

But in a nut shell - apple has some instructions for you to look over for beta testing.

I love the title of this next one - and by Love I mean Hate.  And by Hate I mean - I pitty the fool that wrote it - but it does show just how clueless some Tech writers / Android fan boys can be.  And this is from Silicon beat - and the title of the article is quote Despite Apple Gains, Android rules smartphones unquote.   Yes because Apples close to 90% share of smartphone profits - that does not mater.  This article is one of those - Don’t have a clue articles - but hey it is link bait so it worked.  They just don’t get that Android is not a single thing - it is a chaotic mess of many different versions each with modifications by the OEM and then more modifications by the Carriers.  What you experience on an HTC with T-Mobile in Germany may be very different then what you experience with Samsung on Verzion in the US or what you get with a Sony Erricson phone on SoftBank in Japan.  Mater of fact if you purchased a new phone per the examples above - you might find one is Kit Kat and another Ice Cream and another jellybean or some other version.  Point is you really don’t know what you will get from handset to handset and carrier to carrier.  But if you buy an iPhone 6 from any carrier in the world today - it will be the same user experience - with maybe a couple added features like Wifi Calling from T-mobile in the US - but other wise 99.9% the same.  The same base apps - and the same UI.  So yes maybe there are more Android phones sold - but they are not making their OEMs any money - and the experience for the end user is not consistent.  None of which was even remotely touch on in that Shlock of an article.

    Hi Rob,

Per the issue of not being able to remove songs It's an ios bug. Here's what I did

    1. Deleted all songs on iPhone via general settings.

    2. Went into music app to see what songs were not deleted and made note of those songs.

    3. Changed the music settings to show all songs.

    4. Re-download the songs that i wanted to delete

    5. Changed to music settings to show only songs on iPhone

    6. Go back into music app or general settings and delete songs

    7. Redownload songs you want from ITUNES app on iOS. DO NOT download via the music app.

Note: when downloading songs from music app it gets all buggy. Hope this helps.

    Hey Rob.

We were wondering if there were any negative effects of Field Test Mode and if so what are they? I found on the Internet that if you call *3001#12345#* you can enter FTM but the. If you hold the power button till the slider bar comes up, then press the home button. And if you repeat this two or three times then the numbers in the top left can toggle between the numbers and bars. Any negative effect, or is it all good news? I'm on AT&T in case that maters.

    Regards,

    Josh

P.S. January 15 2015 was the 100th anniversary of the first transcontinental phone call. Made by Alexander Graham Bell from New York to San Francisco. Have a good day Rob and sorry.

    Hello Rob,

If your listeners are looking for a wireless stereo bluetooth headset that fits over the ears, with......

    8 Hours of battery life

    Completely water proof

    100 feet wireless range

    Bluetooth 3.0

    HD Audio with nice base

    Complete set of ear buds

Well look no further, just pick up a BlueAnt Pump HD SportBuds.  I got mine at my local MicroCenter Electronics super center and I never take them off (including taking a shower) except to charge them every night.  The are light and comfortable and worth every penny of the $129.99 I paid for them.  Don't believe me, just check out the videos on YouTube. Buy these wireless headsets, you will not be disappointed.

    Regards,

    first-instant-camera-case-for-iphone-and

For our Kickstarter project this week we have one that had a goal of 50,000 dollars and has in a week raised half a million dollars - this is the Prynt Project with Prynt spelled P R Y N T  and what it is is a case that prints photos - think of it as a case that turns your iPhone into a polaroid camera.

They have cases for the iPhone 5 and 5S,  5C,  and iPhone 6 - sorry nothing for the 6Plus.

Most of the options are sold out.  Initially it was $99 for the Prynt case.

Right now there is a $150 version - that gets you the Prynt case a pack of 30 sheets of paper and a hall of framed mention - plus also a t-shirt.

There is also a $199 option to get you 2 prynt cases and 40 sheets of paper.

What is interesting about this case - one no wifi or bluetooth - it connects via the lightning port only.  And really interesting - no ink of the printer - the ink is in the paper.

    Hi Rob,

Stay away from The Outlook App. Especially, if in a corporate setting. Saves your credentials to MS Cloud Services. Which we all know have direct open doors to the NSA. and Microsofts Vulnerable Operating Systems. Even after App Deletion. The open credentials remain to your Data, emails and calendars.

    Hi Rob,

I had seen this Outlook app the other day and downloaded it.  It still was similar to the old Accompli App but thought you would want to see this article to warn others of the security issues.

    Regards,

    https://blog.winkelmeyer.com/2015/01/warning-microsofts-

    outlook-app-for-ios-breaks-your-company-security/

Well it seems like MS finally figured out how to get their products and Apples on the same security level - and that was to release a product that borked your security for lack of a better term.

According to IBM developer René Winkelmeyer, the app presents some major security issues for the companies that intend to use it.

quote “What I saw was breathtaking. A frequent scanning from an AWS IP to my mail account. Means Microsoft stores my personal credentials and server data (luckily I've used my private test account and not my company account) somewhere in the cloud! They haven't asked me. They just scan. So they have in theory full access to my PIM data, Those messages, calendar events, and contacts, along with their associated metadata, may be temporarily stored and indexed securely both in our servers and locally on the app on your device. If your emails have attachments and you request to open them in our app, the service retrieves them from the mail server, securely stores them temporarily on our servers, and delivers them to the app. unquote said Winkelmeyer

So in other words - be very very careful if you plan on using this app - and definitely check with your IT department first.

    6-plus-review-erotic-poetry

There is one article I have been holding off talking about - but since Valentines day is coming - I thought you might want to read this one to use for your V-Day Cards.

This is an article about how The Verge took iPhone 6 Reviews and pulled out different quotes to create erotic poetry.

I soooo want to read some of them on the show - but then I might loose the G-Rating.  So I will just say - if you are not sure what to right in your significant others V-Day card - I dare you to use some of the quotes used in this poetry - quotes about the iPhone 6 - in your card to your significant other.  Warning if they figure out what you are doing - it will be more than shades of grey you are seeing.  Probably a little crimson as well. Just Sayin  -  Look for the link titled - erotic poetry constructed exclusively from iPhone 6 reviews - In the show notes for ep 336 at today in iOS dot com  It is actually a funny read - and lets you see how over the top some or ok many reviews go.

    Hi Rob,

So you find an iPhone, iPad etc. You, as a good person want to return it. The device is locked. Press the Home button to activate Siri.

Then Ask -  Who owns this iPhone / iPad? -   Siri will bring up the owners Contact details.

    Simple. Give it a go.

For me had lots of passwords in my contact notes. So remove anything that may be embarrassing that would be reviled.

    Hi Rob,

I wanted to ask you and the audience about an issue that I am having with my iPad Mini 1st Generation. This was my first and currently only Apple product that I own and I'm noticing a burn in effect on my screen. I am seeing ghost like images around the sides of the screen when  working from app to app and I am wondering if either you or anyone else had this issue and what to do to repair it. This is a replacement of my original iPad mini which had a headphone jack malfunction and a battery defect.

    Hi Rob,

Just finished Tii episode 335 and heard Zack a question regarding the iPhone 5c.   I had this same problem on my 5c (long story short I disliked that phone).  I went to the local Apple Store to ask the "genius" boys there with this problem.  In short all they could tell me was yes they saw this in the forums and I should redownload the song to see if it will delete.  Personally I think this is was a software problem with this particular model.

Also I have an app for your show.  I recommend an app called Syncios.  I found this as a way of putting media onto my iOS devices without using the clunky iTunes dinosaur on my windows machine.  You simply download the software to the computer and sync your iOS device over usb and poof!  There is all your iOS info in a nice simple layout.  I have timed the difference in between iTunes and Syncios. And here is the difference- in the time iTunes took to load 1 album into my iPhone 6 I was able to load 4 albums through Syncios.  Genius!!   But one warning to listeners,  Syncios and iTunes must both be on the same drive for it to work.  I found the hard way that running iTunes off an external drive and not the laptop causes sync to crash.

    Regards.

Hi, Rob & Tii Listeners! :)

    I have a keyboard question...

I would like to try out some third-party keyboards but there is a feature in Apple's native keyboard that I can't seem to find in any of the others.

In the native keyboard, whenever you press a key, a larger version of that key appears above it, which is very helpful for those of us with vision impairments.

Does anyone know of a third-party keyboard that offers this same feature?

Thanks in advance and thanks for ALL you do, Rob. Your podcast is #1!!!!

    Hi Rob

Well the nightmare has happened. I've lost my phone. Tried calling the phone and it's turned off. I logged onto iCloud and clicked erase data, it said pending. I then stupidly in my panicked, not thinking straight mindset, removed the device from the account. From the research I have done, I know that removing the device would have cancelled the erase request if someone hadn't switched it on and connected to the Internet. If that had done so, the erase would have gone through. I also know someone can now restore to factory settings and set this up as a new device without an activation lock prompt. My concern is my data I had on the phone. I have iCloud and iTunes backups so I haven't lost my data, but I am wondering if someone will still be prompted to enter a passcode if they turn the phone on? I know I won't get the phone back and I know I've basically made it possible for someone to access the phone and use it as new, but am hoping with the chain of events that has occurred, my data won't get accessed by someone else. I am out of mind with worry.

    Regards

    Steve

    Brisbane

    Hi Rob

Following on from the previous email, I have had numerous discussions with Apple today and it seems that removing the device from iCloud simply removes the activation lock, rather than the passcode, so it sounds like the only thing someone could now do is set the phone up as new after doing a restore, which of course would wipe any data. If someone switches it on in its current state, they are likely to be promoted to enter a passcode. However, I just realised that Siri on the lock screen can be used to do certain things, so as such I have changed the passwords on my Apple ID, email, Internet banking and social media accounts. That is all I can now do. I can only hope that a would be thief is more likely to wipe my data off the phone and set it up as new for themselves rather than try and access what was on there when I lost it.

My advice for the listeners is if you lose your phone, take a breath and think logically so you don't make a mistake in a panicked state, like I did. I was stung by my carrier for early termination  fees of the contract, but the only positive is I now have a 6 plus. My wife thinks I lost my other phone on purpose as I have wanted one since it came out.

In future I shall be very vigilant with my iPhone. I will keep find my iPhone and location services on, so I can track it if necessary and I certainly won't be removing any more activation locks. Sometimes in life, you have to learn the hard way and I certainly have in this case.

    Regards

    Steve

    Hi Rob

Thanks for the email. I doubt I'll get it back. If a thief has got it, they are more likely to wipe the device clean either for themselves or to sell, so especially now I have changed my main passwords, I'm not worried so much about them accessing my data. My carrier has blocked the handset.

I can guarantee I won't let this happen again as it is beyond painful. Can you maybe on the show run through a security step checklist for listeners?

    Enable a passcode

    Enable Touch ID

    Use 2 step verification

Disable access on lock screen for everything under Settings/Touch ID & Passcode and allow access when locked.

Make sure find my iPhone under both iCloud and location services is turned on, with an active internet connection so you can track the device. Location services needs to be on as well.

    Regards

    Steve

    Hi Rob,

Never done this before but I came across this this app the other day and was messing around with it and then this idea occurred to me. I've used the waterlogue app to covert the real life photo I got from the "pimp your screen" app on my iPhone into a water painting and then annotated with evernote's skitch app on my iPad.

I'm sure you've got artwork lined up for your next episode but just in case, here's one you could use.

Hi ROB, I am developer of the BVS Solitaire Collection.

I have been developing solitaire card games for windows and mac OS X since 1996. Windows version gained popularity and was even featured in a movie  "The girl with the dragon tattoo" by Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist and Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander.

Today I would like to introduce the iOS version of the BVS Solitaire Collection. It is a multi-featured set of 224 solitaire card games and it provides you with endless hours of gaming fun. All your old time favorites are included such as Spider, FreeCell, Pyramid, etc. It also includes a lot of unique variations not found elsewhere. The app also allows you to modify rules of almost any of the included games, thus creating your own solitaire variations.

The app can be played in both portrait and landscape modes and it features excellent high quality card sets and backgrounds. BVS Solitaire Collection is solitaire done right

If you live in Alaska, Hawaii, Montana, Kansas, Mississippi, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont and Massachusetts - when you look around it may seems like most people have an iPhone - and you know what - you would be right - those are the states with 55 to 65% iPhone traffic according to Chitika.  At least that is the % of users causing traffic with apps that use the Chitika ads module.  According to those that put together the report - quote Our analysis does point towards state-level evidence on the factors affecting iPhone usage rates, iPhone usage shares are positively correlated with level of education and population density at the state-level. unquote.

What they did not say mention was What about correlation between states with. AT&T customers and iPhone users compared.  I am guessing there is still some influence per AT&T and iPhone users - at least where AT&T was more popular a few years ago.

Interesting the report covered % of iPhone use - the lowest group was 40% to 44% - meaning worst case - you are looking at 40% iPhone use as % of share in any given state.  On the highest end it is 65%.  Still saying iPhone usage varies betweens 40% and 65% in the US depending on your state is pretty impressive use.  So much for the myth that android is killing it in the US at least.

Thanks to Myron for the heads up on this next one.

And I want you to really think about this next one - which is the new that in 2014 - there was more revenue generated for iOS Apps then there was for Hollywood’s US Box office Ticket Revenue.  7 Years ago there was no revenue - It was not until the middle of 2008 that the App store from Apple came about.  Apple has created an incredible App economy - and the best thing is the devs are not forced to all be in Hollywood or cities right around it.  You can be an app dev in any city, town, hamlet or ranch anywhere in the world - as long as you have electricity and a connection to the internet.

In the US alone Apple estimates there are 627,000 jobs created for this App ecosystem.

It has been amazing to watch all this unfold - especially if you have a chance to go back and listen to some of the older episodes of Tii from 2007 - where Apple did not want an app store.  They were pushing for HTML5 / web apps - and if you do listen to those older episodes - you will hear me pushing for allowing native apps - prior to apple actually giving in and allowing it.  Apple truly has those early jailbreakers to thank for this part of the Apple Eco system - and it really is one of the most important pieces of the Apple Eco system.

Again in under 7 years - App Revenue was greater by a wide margin than Hollywood’s US Box Office Revenue - and to me that is just amazing and mind blowing and well wonderful as well.

Thanks to michael for this next one which is that 15 More banks have signed on to support Apple Pay and with one breath they are.

    A+ Federal Credit Union

    -Amegy Bank of Texas

    -America First Credit Union

    -Bethpage Federal Credit Union

    -California Bank & Trust

    -Connex Credit Union

    -Goldenwest FCU

    -Huntington Bank

    -KeyPoint Credit Union

    -Meijer Credit Union

    -National Bank of Arizona

    -Nevada State Bank

    -The Bank of Greene County

    -Vectra Bank

    -Zions First National Bank

That brings to over 50 different banks and financial institutions that support Apple Pay.

Link to the full list in the show notes.

But reality was Apple Pay was already supported by the biggest banks.  But still if yours was one of the 15 I just lifted - it was good news for you.

There is a new app / service I must mention on he show - it is called Be My Eyes - thanks to all that sent in links on this one.

In a nutshell what this is an app where a sight impaired users requests help seeing what is around them - a sighted user then replies to that request and describes what they see being video streamed from the requestors phone.  Maybe they are looking for the ingredients of an food item they are about to buy or its expiration date, or maybe to confirm they were just given back the right amount of change, or maybe it is just to help them locate something they dropped or get their bearings or even to confirm that person they met at that social event looks the age they said they were.  There are lots of opportunities for you to be helped by this app or to help someone with this app and who knows you might make a new virtual friend.

Initial reports are that so many people have signed up to help - there is no shortage - but that is now while it is in the news - but later on - hard to say if that will keep up.  Hopefully it does - but if not I am curious to know if you help X amount of people and are in High school if those hours of help would count towards your community volunteer hours.  If anyone officials from a school could look into this - that would be appreciated.

Again the website is BE MY EYES dot ORG - as in B E M Y E Y E S dot org - thanks for no funky spelling to the devs on this.  Right now this is just for iOS - but if you are listening to this - that is probably not an issue.

    Hi Rob,

Per the caller asking about the Alarm Clock in the Headphones - My advice would be to look for a music/podcast app that has a wake up to feature. Preferably a podcast type app where you have a file downloaded and not dependent on a data signal.

    Regards,

    Mike R

    Hello Rob,

just been listening to the latest podcast 334.

Somebody stated that VoiceOver is unusable on the Mac.

I disagree with this as I have been using VO on a 21” iMac for the last 2 years since switching from Windows. No screen reader is perfect in my opinion although VO is very darn good. I purchased the iMac after using an iPhone since v4. Had a 5 now using a 6.

Very happy with all Apple products including the iPad Air.

    Regards,

    Max.

    Hi Rob

In response to the caller on the last episode who wanted to put her apps in alphabetical order, there is a way to do this. Go to Settings/General/Reset/Reset Home Screen Layout. The stock apps will appear in their factory default locations. The other apps will now appear in alphabetical order. One important thing to be aware of is if you have created folders, doing this will remove them.

    Regards

    Hi Rob,

    Per  item 334:

Caller question regarding an iOS 8 Jailbreak tweak which makes searching through numerous apps quicker; i.e. alphabetical, favorites, and recents list.

Try Searchlight from the Cydia App Store, which will run you $1.99 from the BigBoss repo. This tweak adds much more functionality to spotlight search. As mentioned above, Searchlight alphabetically lists all of your apps and allows the user to pick and choose a separate list of commonly used apps. There are some alternatives such as Smart search, but the app lists are not as extensive.

    Regards,

    Mark H

    Hi Rob,

Just chiming in about your stance on the refund policy in the EU. While I can understand your position from an economic point of view (and agree with that part) I disagree with the part that apple should fight this. If anything good has come out of this, it is that blind people who use voiceOver can more "freely” try apps and don’t have to rely on a good-hearted Apple person or a lengthy process to get our money back when an unresponsive developer is afoot. Note the qualifiers there: I’ll buy apps at a dollar or so, but $10 sight unseen is a bit much for a poor college student. I also try very hard to communicate with developers or get the word out. So for VoiceOver users, the hassle-free refund policy is a good thing. Here’s hoping they allow it in the states.

Also, for the blind person wanting to learn voiceOver, I recommend (along with whomever he might encounter at the Apple store) these two sites:

    Mac for the Blind:

    http://macfortheblind.com

is a good site for getting tips and tricks, as well as useful links to apple’s own documentation. John, the person who runs the site, I believe does training on an individual basis, but you will have to contact him for further details.

Another great repository of apps, forums, podcast demos, and just good old fashion people helping people out is Applevis:

    http://www.applevis.com

I hope this helps the DC listener out. Welcome to iOS!!

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came out was a nice tip that came from Francisco Tapia - If you are in the safari app - you can find past closed tabs.  To do this in the lower right tap on the double square - the one that shows the open tabs - then tap AND HOLD on the big  Plus button at the bottom center - it will then show you a list of “Recently closed tabs”

    Thanks Francisco for that tip.

Thanks to Steve from Brisbane for this next one.

Which is that Apple adds a new Free on iTunes section to iTunes on your iOS device and also on the desktop version.  So to check this one out I had to go find the folder I had iTunes hidden in on my iOS device - but once found and launched - yup there it was the new Free on iTunes  featured button in the middle of the screen.  And in there I could see free Songs and free Full-Length TV episodes - and well free Song and free full length TV episodes - sorry no free movies.

But hey you can get the first episode of 12 monkeys for free if you missed it.  Although I am kind of at a quandry with that one as I put the original Terry Giliam 12 monkeys as one of my top 10 movies of all time.  It really was just a great movie - and I am afraid to watch it for fear they will ruin such a great property.  Ohhhh the woes of a nerd.

    watch-battery-life-revealed-a5-caliber-cpu-inside/

Lots of reports about the Apple Watch battery life or if the reports are true lack there of.

Ok lets go over what some of those reported numbers from sources in the know are saying.

Apple was wanting the following specs:

4 Days - that is the length of time if left in sleeping mode.

3 Days of pure standby time

19 hours of combined active / passive use

and 2.5 to 4 hours of active application use

Those sources however are saying Apple will only likely achieve approximately 2 to 3 days in either standby or low power modes.

With the Watch face showing constantly - and nothing else going on - they are saying Apple is getting 3 hours of battery life.

And they are getting 2.5 hours of heavy application use like game play.

And finally for the watches fitness tracking software Apple is targeting 4 hours of straight exercise tracking

Again this is all from unnamed sources in the know.  So take it for what it is worth - which may be nothing.  Here is my prediction - since this Apple rumor has been widely reported - And in the past Apple has made announcements right after quarterly calls - I am predicting that Wednesday or Thursday of this week - we hear something from Apple with regards to the Apples watch and at that time there would be more specs released.

    to-launch-stylus-to-enhance-upcoming-129-inch-ipad-user-experience

Thanks to Tash and a few others for this next one - which is per another rumor that seems to be heating up as of late - and that is the 12.9 inch iPad Pro rumor - along with Apple introducing an Apple Stylus.  Now note this latest rumor round is coming from Apple Analyst - Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities - whom has a much better track record of getting rumors right - that said - you need to understand - Much better is still in the neighborhood of a good major league batter - i.e. in the 30 to 40% range.

What is different with Apples stylus vs one you get at the dollar store - is that Apples will cost a lot more than a dollar - and it will have a gyroscope built in to support 3D handwriting - which I am sure will look great on the 2D iPad Pro.

Anyway - this is not something that will come with the iPad pro - but something you buy as an accessory for the iPad Pro. This would be something charged via the lightening port of your iPad.

And he is also saying the iPad Pro would finally offer split screen on an iPad.

If this sounds like wetting your finger and putting it up to see which way the wind is blowing - you would be likely be correct - but then again - Ming Chi does have a better record then most when using that method.

    point-to-the-demise-of-microsofts-surface-tablet.html

Thanks to Dr. John for this next one.  Which we file under SHOCKER

And it relates to the MS Surface 2 tablet - that has song, danced and clicked its way into the hearts of well basically no one.

Remember the first gen Surface was called the Surface RT - and yes that is the one that MS wrote off $900 Million on.

Now don’t get this confused with MS Surface Pro - that is the one that runs windows.  No word yet on what level the write off will be on this one - just that basically they are no longer selling new ones on their store or well they are showing up as out of stock - same with their retail partner Best Buy.

Microsoft had their quarterly conference call today and it was not ALL bad news they had 26.5 Billion dollars of revenue last quarter that is up 8% from the same quarter a year earlier.

They sold 10 Million Phones.  Which sounds good until you see they had an ASP of $230 - vs the ASP of iPhones which is north of $600.

And MS did confirm it is no longer selling the Surface 2 - so you can officially stick a fork in it - right next to all the other forks un-officially stuck in it over the past year.

MS is now only selling the Surface Pro 3 - which makes sense - as its best selling feature is that it runs Windows - not some non-compatible OS.

How did Wallstreet react to the Conference call - well the stock was down 4% in after market trading - that said - I can remember quite a few times when Apple had what I thought was a grand slam quarterly report - only to see the stock drop 4% or there about in after market trading.

To me though the take away from their quarterly report - ASP of $230 for their phones vs Apples ASP’s which are not just well north of $600 but probably will be well north of $700 tomorrow when Apple reports.

    Hi Rob,

I was listening to the podcast today and you asked if anyone had the R79 case. I Purchased the case.  My overall impression is that it does give a better signal, but only slightly better.

I set my iPhone to field test mode so I get a numeric value from the signal, rather than 3 or 4 bars, I noticed before  I put the case on, I saw -110 db. After putting the case on, it was constantly -100 db.  I have done some experiments with taking the case on and off, and consistently see about a 10db signal improvement.  I got the case because where i work, I have a great signal, but when I’m home not so much, there are some places in the house  where I have to go to talk on the phone.  With the case, I haven’t noticed having to do that, but I’m not a heavy phone user at home, so can’t comment if it would be enough for most people.

Aside from the signal strength, I think the case is a decent case, in itself.  It seems to be well made, and I like how the bottom is cut out so it doesn’t interfere with various non-apple lightning or dock connectors.  Overall, I think it’s a little expensive for a case, but not tremendously expensive.  It’s not a magic cure to low signals, but if you are right on the edge in some specific areas it might help.

    Regards,

    W. Todd S

    Hi Rob,

I wanted to let you know that I received my Acme Made "Charge" cases that you mentioned on Tii.  I backed the project at the $55 level which gave me two cases.  Last month they sent an update which said to watch for early delivery, originally they were scheduled for late March.  Today when I arrived home, both cases one for my wife's 6 and one for my 6+ were in the package.  The cases look good with a lightning charge cord tucked in the kickstand.  Good quality with a tight fit on the phone.  The buttons are open for the original feel and just a hit of the gold is visible at the top and bottom.

Thanks for the recommendation of this project!  They came through unlike other projects which have yet to deliver  can you say SOS Charger*.

One observation, the side ridge isn't deep enough to protect from a face drop.  Users will just have to be aware.

I had a couple of listeners email in that they supported this next one - which is called the Vikaura Screen - V I K A U R A -  Quote Vikaura lets you friends & family drive images and information out of your phone and into your world - no wires unquote.

First off this one has until Feb 3rd at 12:57 PM CT to get funded - and it ain’t there yet - as it only has $90k towards it goal of 125k.

Essentially this is an e-ink screen you can wirelessly push an image to - they are offering up a 4” version for $99, a 6” for $129 and a 9.7” for  $199.

Yes there is more to it than that - as they claim the battery life for their devices lasts quote for years on its battery unquote

It does look cool - but $199 cool - I am not sure.  And neither are most others - as again they are a bit short on hitting their goal.

If they do hit their goal for those that funded it - I will be very interested to hear your thoughts when you get it. For all others interested in this search for V I K A U R A  vikaura at kickstarter dot com or in the show notes for ep 335

    Hi Rob,

If i have the legion meter wouldn’t the SoniCable be the same but slower?

    Regards,

    Michael

And what Michael is talking about is the SoniCable - spelled S O N I C A B L E - which is at Indiegogo dot com - and has raised over 230k towards a goal of 10k - so they are well over their goal.

The folks behind this one are touting it as the worlds most advanced charging cable.

Pricing on this is $27 and what they are claiming is that you can charge your device fully in half the time as normal.  Which yes is something that the Legion Meter claims as well.

And like the legion meter it has two modes - one mode is where it is like a normal USB to Lightening cable allowing you to charge and sync your device - but on the other mode it is focused just on Power - and sync / data is disabled - and all you can do is charge but at a faster rate.

They claim the following features for the cable.  Dual sided USB, Aluminum Connectors, Table free cable with is strong and durable.

And they are also claiming the MFI - Made for iPhone designation as well.

You can also get 2 for $49 or 5 for $110.

    Search for S O N I C A B L E at indie go go or in the show notes for ep 335

Per is this slower or faster than the Legion Meter - I think the legion meter claimed charging a little faster than 2x - but honestly with my device - I never did see that and I just use the Legion meter mostly to make sure I am actually charging my Pebble - as it shows the 0.08 MA charge it draws.

I get lots and lots and lots of emails from devs promoting their apps - most of them free and almost none of which I have time check out.  But every so often I will see one come through I think has potential - and this week I saw and downloaded one of them - the App is called Click the Number - it is a simple game - where you are presented with a few numbers and you need to tap on the one listed above.  You tap the correct one and the next screen there are more numbers - and so on - and you have just a few seconds to locate the right number and later on in the game the right symbol or letter.  It is simple - and helps exercise your mind - and it is free - the app is called Click the Number - and it is one I will be getting the kids to play as well - especially the 6 year old that needs an app like this.

Oh and if you are an App dev and have a free app - the best way to get featured on this show is to send me in a 60 sec or less review of your app for me to play.  Again most that just send in a link never get mentioned on the show - but any that send in an audio review get up on the show.   PS - first day playing with this my best was 18.

email me today in iOS at gmail dot com - let me know you best score.

    Hi Rob

I am fairly new to the Instagram app for iOS. I am finding if I upload an existing photo to Instagram from my camera roll, it saves a duplicate photo to my camera roll, which then means I have to go in and delete the unwanted duplicate. I don't want to have to do this every time I upload a photo to Instagram from my camera roll, so do you or any listeners that use Instagram for iOS, know how to avoid this occurring? Appreciate any advice.

    apple-sell-last-quarter-update/

Leading up to the apple quarterly report - I want to go over some Predictions from the Anal-ists out there - Thanks as always goes to Philip Elmer Dewit at Fortune for curating all of this.

This time I will include Mac predictions - just because some of them are pretty high.

A year ago Apple sold 4.84 Million Macs.  This time the average estimate is 5.58 Million Macs.  With Daya Baran of StockChats at the top of the guessing tree with 5.98 Mil mac vs Collin Gillis of BGC partners with 5.1 Mil macs guessed.

Next up is the iPhone guesses - A year ago there were 51 Mil iPhones sold in the Last quarter of of 2013 - this time the average estimate is 66.5 Mil iPhones sold. With Kirk Burgess from the Braeburn group being the cherry on top with 71.50 Mil iPhones sold as his guess - and Uncle Gene Munster from Piper Jaffray with a guess of 61 Mil for his guess on the bottom side.

My guess is Apple sold how ever many they were able to make last quarter - with Apple saying that sales were constrained by supply - and they did not equal equilibrium until This month.  Nope not going to give a number - as I never get it right - but If I was guessing I would have said 69.2 Mil sold.  But I am not guessing.

For iPads sold - A year ago it was 26 Mil sold in that quarter.  This year the average for last quarter is 21.5 Mil sold.  With the top guess going to Peter I went to Colorado and bought some cool stuff man Misek from Jefferies

and Uncle Gene I went with him to Colorado Munster both with a guess of 25 Mil sold - to a low of 16.32 Mil from Aaron C Rakers with stifle Nicholaus.   If I was guess I would say well under 20 mil - and go with 18.5 Mil for my guess - if I was guessing.

We shale see later on Tuesday - look for my blog post on Tuesday going over the numbers - but it might be later on Tuesday. Just depends on how the blizzard goes - and if I can get to the hospital to visit my mom.  Which is why this episode was recorded using a different mic this week.

    Hi Rob,

I was just reading some articles on your website about apple pay and it made me think about how simple it is, and it got me thinking about other applications for apple pay.  I help my family out every summer with a lawn care business they own, and there are a lot of places that have electronic security gates. My curiosity is, I'm wondering if there would be a way to be able to use an apple pay like experience with a security gate instead of having to put in a pin every time. And do you think there would be a way to send out temporary passes to other visitors so you wouldn't have to give out a PIN number.

I love your show and I look forward to it every time,

Thanks for everything and I did subscribe to your KC start up podcast and it's a joy as well!

    Regards,

    Jason H

Welcome to the show I am your host Rob and this is the Today in iOS podcast -  First up I want to thank JADE for sending in the music you hear in the background. JADE wrote:

    Hi Rob,

As always love the show! Been a fan for quite a few years now and never miss an episode. For the past 2 years I've been working on my 4th studio album as I'm doing something quite massive and unique. I've been recording the whole album using iOS devices only.  So far the album is 14 tracks long and a very unique blend of ballads, rock, metal, punk, electro and jazz.

I've included a demo song from the CD titled "smashing your face in"

The apps used were Garage Band, Audiobus, Auria,, Music Studio, Studio MiniXL, Amplitube, IShredLive, Final Touch, Vocal Live and Session Band

    Regards,

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote “Amazon’s pricing ambition is the clearest indication of its phone playbook: undercut rivals and grab meaningful market share. It is also shows that Apple’s worst nightmare may be coming true: prices could fall not just for cheap phones in developing markets but higher-end ones too.  unquote

Amir Efrati and Jessica E. Lessin, jessicalessin.com,

    6 September 2013

That old refrain that prices could fall - is something we hear over and over.  I don’t think any of these people realize that Apple is the ONLY one making money.  85% of the profits for the entire Cellphone industry.  Cheap is not what is wanted by all - There is still a good % of the market willing to pay to get quality.  Hence why the Amazon Fire crashed and well burned - and the iPhone is doing better than ever.  Just Sayin

Tim Cook has made no bones about the fact that your privacy as a customer trumps all.  And that Apple has never worked with any government agencies from any government to put in a backdoor in any of Apples Products and they have never allowed access to Apples servers and never will.

Users that know of this - Appreciate this.

Governments - not so much - especially if you happen to be the Leader of the British Government.  Apparently Prime Minister Cameron wants to Ban services that encrypt messages - like iMessage or FaceTime - which offer end to end encryption - see Big Brother thinks privacy is bad.  Essentially the logic is this - We must not allow Freedom if we are to preserve Freedom.  What is this President Ferris Fremont going after Aramchek?  Because it sure sounds that way.  Bonus points for those that got that reference.

Now it is not just the UK government that wants to get rid of this privacy - there are other governments in Europe, the NSA of course and other agencies in the US that are not happy with Apples level of privacy for users.  And I should point out it is not just Apples Apps - Snapchat is in their cross hairs as well.

Lets just hope that VALIS - I mean Apple can hold out against those that want to ensure freedom by squashing it.

    between-unlocked-t-mobile-and-sim-free-

    iphone-6-6-plus-explained/

    Hi Rob,

I bought a T-Mobile unlocked iPhone (6+ 128gig) right before Apple started offering the Apple unlocked phones. Is there any difference at all except for the fact that the T-Mobile one comes with a sim card? They should both be equally unlocked right? I can't get a straight answer from Apple and I wonder if I should bother trading it in for the Apple one before my 14 day return window is over.

    Thanks,

    Terry

Hi Terry - Both are fully unlocked.

But there are some differences between the T-Mobile version and the SIM free version.

The T-Mobile 6 and 6+ feature bands that are more specific to North America and should work with most 4G LTE networks in the US.

It will NOT work on China's advanced TD-LTE Network.  If China Travel is in your plans - exchange it now.

Really if you plan to travel outside the US - then the SIM free one is what you want.

If you are only going be in the US - stick with the T-Mobile version.

Ok - that is the simple answer.  But lets say you really like you local regional carrier - then you need to know which ones the T-Mobile version supports - which are

    T-mobile of course

    AT&T

    and Verizon

    Plus

    AIO

    Alaska Communications

    Consumer Cellular

    Cricket

    Family Mobile

    GCI

    Net 10

    Straight Talk

    Union Wireless

The SIM Free iPhone 6 and 6+ supports the following carriers:

    AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon,

    Sprint and

    PLUS

    Appalacian Wireless

    Bluegrass Cellular

    Boost

    C Spire

    Cellcom

    Charlton Valley

    Chat Mobility

    Defense Mobile

    MobileNation

    Nex-Tech

    NorthwestCell

    nTelos

    Pioneer Cellular

    Stata Networks

    Syringa

    Thumb Cellular

    United Wireless

    and US Cellular

    Hi Rob,

I thought you were a big fan of Sprint Wireless, especially since their HQ were so close to home. I was surprised when I heard you were now on T-Mobile.

I have an iPhone 6 on AT&T. Grandfathered in on unlimited data but throttled after 5 GB of data. I watch a lot of Netflix and I reach the limit pretty quick, and my viewing pleasure after being throttled blows and renders my iPhone useless.

I'm considering Sprint or T-Mobile. I live in the Bay Area in California, specifically the San Jose area. I usually jailbreak for tethering purposes. I'm curious how you decided on T-Mobile and what your 2 cents are regarding sprint wireless.

    Regards,

    Mr. Ed

Thanks for the questions Mr. Ed.  I choose T-Mobile for a few reasons - but the biggest ones being they let you do all the neat new stuff the iPhone supports - like Wifi Calling and Voice of LTE.  Plus with T-Mobile - Tethering is included - not an extra charge that kills your grandfathered unlimited plan.  And they offer unlimited data (well except for the tethering part and there you are limited to 5GB per month of tethered data.

The pricing when I combing my Wifes plan and my plan on T-mobile was within a few dollars of my old plan on AT&T alone.   So I gained features and saved a bunch of money per month.

Per Sprint - It is a technology reason I stay away - the Sprint phones are not as flexible when it comes to using older phones on other carriers.  I like that at any point my Old GMS way off contract iPhones I could reactivate on one of the cheaper carriers for my sons - when they get to the age they will need a cellular plan.

T-mobile also have very good coverage here in Kansas City - so that was important of me.  I will say on Long Island where my Parents live - T-Mobile coverage was horrible.  Just make sure you check to see what your local coverage is where you live before making a choice.

    http://www.redmondpie.com/video-shows-

    performance-of-ios-8.2-beta-4-running-on-

    iphone-5s-and-iphone-4s/

iOS 8.2 Beta 4 is out for all iOS devices supporting iOS 8.

One thing to note - is the beta was speed tested on the iPhone 4S - and well - it actually lost vs 8.1.2 - It does not look like anyone running old iOS hardware and iOS 8 will see any improvement in speed - and the tests actually show some tasks running slower.

When iOS 8.2 is released if you have iOS hardware that is multiple years old - I would highly recommend you hold off updating. Especially as the big feature for 8.2 is Apple Watch support - and the iPhone 4S will not support it anyway.

One thing the beta of 8.2 has revealed is that when the Apple watch comes - there will be a stand alone app to support it.

There is a very detailed article on 9 to 5 Mac - Link in the show notes titled Apple Watch iPhone Companion App revealed with new watch features, monograms.   This goes over a bunch of new features dug out about Apple Watch.  Like Monogram - where you can add up to 4 initials as a monogram virtually on the screen.  Hmmmm - wonder if I would go with Tii on mine.

This article talks about how you will organize the apps on the Apple watch.  Which really you will do on the iPhone - just like how you can organize the apps on your iPhone via iTunes - you will organize the Apps on your Apple Watch via the iPhone.

They also go over features for Clock Functions, Messages, Maps, Accessibility, Passcode, Activity Motion & Fitness, and more - again look for that link in the show notes - especially if you plan to get an Apple watch or more so if you are on the fence.

    Hi Rob,

+1 to Harry's razors. I have been using a Truman for a few months now and it works great. The price is reasonable and the blade cut great. Thanks for introducing them to me.

    Regards,

    Joe Strottman

Thanks for the feedback Joe and I want to thank Harrys for sponsoring this episode and - if you go to harrys dot com - that is h a r r y s dot com and use the promo code t i i - you will save $5 on your first order.

Lets face it guys one of the worst parts about shaving is tracking down that person to unlock to the display case so you can get your razors - the other worst part is the price you pay for said razors when you get to the check out counter.  Harry's helps on both those fronts - no need to go to the store - you just order on line and get the razors delivered right to your door with free shipping.  The starter kit The Truman Set is amazing - for $15 you get a razor - Foaming Shave Gel and 3 razor blades - all in a great package that screams GIFT ME GIFT ME - are you listening ladies.  Actually My little lady was and she purchased me a years supply of Razors and Shave Gel for My birthday.  Kind of a win win - I get a great present - she gets me using the Shave gel she really likes the smell of.

And that new Foaming Shave Gel is great.  If you look at what it is made from you might not know if you should eat it or shave with it.  The ingredients include Licorice Root extract, a blend of Cucumber and Aloe - after using it my wife was asking what smelled sooo good.  It really is nice to shave with something that is not made from industrial chemicals.

look at my picture in the Banner for Harrys over on the Tii website and you will see me wearing my Warby Parker glasses on my Harry's shaven head.  And it just so happens that Jeff the co-founder of Harry's also co-founded Warby Parker.  That means you know you are getting the same great quality experience as you get with Warby Parker - and they have a good social mission where 1% of sales and at least 1% of their time is donated to organizations to help prep people for personal and professional success.  With Harrys.com You get a shave that feels really good from a company you can feel good about.

Once again go to Harrys.com now and save $5 off when you enter the code - t i i with your first purchase.  That is h a r r y s dot com and enter the coupon code T I I at check out to save $5 on your first purchase and start shaving better today or at least as soon as your new shave kit arrives at your door step.

    Rob:

i am writing in response to the man who wanted to learn about his accessibility features such as voice over.

In my experience, Apple store employees know next to nothing about voiceover.

He would do far better, to join apple-vis, a apple only community dedicated to blind and low vision users.

There are a number of books about learning to use IOS products in electronic and braille formats published by National Braille Press.

Hook up with any local National chapter of organizations of the blind and begin to learn.

There are many excellent blind IOS trainers available.

    Just ask applevis.com.

If you turn it off - it is supposed to block your caller ID.

Mike Hennessie mentioned that turning it off and calling his house it still showed his name and number - but calling his wifes iPhone it did not.

Some questions we have about how Apples sales really went last quarter will be answered on Tuesday Jan 27th at 5:00 PM ET - when Apple does their quarterly conference call. Here are my predictions - iPhone sales up yr over yr - iPad sales down yr over yr. Pro Apple people (i.e. me - will concentrate our focus on the iPhone sales - Anti Apple Press - i.e. Much of the tech press - will focus on the iPad sales. Some will try to do both.

Either way I will get a blog post up at Today in iOS dot com and in the Tii App either right before or after the conference call starts.

I am sure we will have more on predictions leading up to the conference call or right after going over who was right and who was wrong.

As is typical - don’t expect any new news per products to be announced or even hinted at.

Thanks to Michael for this next one.  Which is more Rumors about the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus or what ever the next gen iPhones are called.

You will see a lot of articles the next couple of months with rumors about the next gen iPhones - but past history shows anything before April is pure fiction - April / May is traditionally when the first real rumors come out.

For now the Rumors are really just people speculating and calling it rumors and tapping the infamous un-named source.

That said -  Kudos for AppAdvice for their article which took the stance of Likely features and speculation.  And what they speculate makes sense.

    A9 Processor - which is clearly a no-brainer

A Bump up in Ram - Given the latest iPad air has 2GB of ram - Again seems to be a no brainer.

Other speculation - Faster RAM to boot - that does come from a rumor in Taiwan - so yeah take that for what it is worth - hint - not much.

Then there is the speculation of Force Touch for the next iPhone - Some call that a rumor - others just looked at the announced features of the Apple Watch and said - Yeah - that is missing from the iPhone now - so add it to the rumor list. Except that the Apple Watch is an OLED display with special sensors to support force touch - so not sure if we will see force touch on the iPhone 6S - Maybe the version after.  This would be a major change if implemented.

Thanks to Jordan for the heads up on this next one:  Which is from cult of mac and the post is titled.  Could Apple Have already lined up the sapphire supplier for the iPhone 6S Question Mark -  and Per the answer I would say in my dreams - as that is about the only way it happens and even then my .  This post is based on  the news that a company called Desay just announced their own smartphone with an unbreakable sapphire display.  Also Desay is an apple supplier.  Cult of Mac asks if Desay can make sapphire displays for their own smartphones why not for Apple.  Hmmmm - Lets see - Oh yeah VOLUME.  Remember before GTAT imploded - it was supposed to have a sapphire production capacity equal to 2 times the current combined global production of Sapphire.  Yes part of the GTAT agreement was that they would get to sell the furnaces to pay of their loans from Apple - be even if they did sell them to Desay - the issue comes that the furnaces did not produce the quality sapphire needed and they would need to be modified at best to get there. There has been no indications that there is a short term solution for Sapphire to meet the needs of 10’s of Millions of iPhones.  So again the answer to the why not for Apple question is Volume and lack of Global production infrastructure for quality Sapphire.  Sadly this is something that will be a long time coming if ever.

It seems iOS 9 is starting to show up on some server logs - meaning Apple is starting some internal testing of the Alpha version - this is right in line with past years and it showing up in server logs. So nice to see it there now - but per the previous episode - I really do hope that iOS 9 is not about new features and much much more about bug fixes and speed improvement.

Thanks to Michael for the heads up on this link - and it really is a story I tried not to report on last episode. You may have noticed last episode I did not say anything about CES. And of all the reports of new products - this is one I was most interested in - it is that there are finally Lightning powered headphones. The big shocker for me though was who they were from - Not Beats now owned by Apple - but rather from Philips and Also Harman JBL.

The Philips Fidelio NC1L is the first lightning powered on-ear noise canceling headphones - followed by the JBL Reflect aware sports headphones with noise cancellation.  The NC1L will be out Late Feb / March time frame - the Aware will be out in the spring.

The NC1L will run you $300 clams - the Aware comes in at half that price.

Technically this is old news as Philips announced the headphones back in September - but they had them at CES and multiple people played with them - and from what I read the response was tepid at best - Essentially they were just as good as other headphones that were not lightning headphones.  Guess you really need to have a keen ear to hear the difference.

We all love lolipops - right - Well evidently not if you use Android - As the latest version of Android which launched in Early November - by the first week of Jan was being used on somewhere south of 0.1% of Android devices. Yikes - In that amount of Time - iOS 8 made its way to almost 50% of All iOS device. Again another reason choosey Dev choose iOS.

I would imagine this whole thing looked something like what the guys in the parking lot really saw in the first fight for fightclub.  Thanks Blackberry for the laugh and the memories.

    Hi Rob,

To answer a question from one of your listeners on the most recent episode about adding apps to the notification center, I use an app called launcher that allows you to put apps in the notification Center using IOS 8 extensions. I am not sure if the feature still is being offered if you download the app today, but it works perfectly for me. I am using an unjailbroken iPad Air 2. I believe there is already one more app that offers this feature also. I would browse the extensions section in the app store. Once again, love the show and keep up the good work.

    Regards,

    Kareem

    Hi rob,

    Happy new year!

In response to the gentleman in episode 333 who switched over from android tablet to iPad 2, looking for quick access to certain apps (or at least that's what I understood him to be looking for), I would recommend the launch app which he can put in the dock at the bottom of the screen. He can add quite a few apps into it and it has the swipe gestures that allows you to open apps slickly or perform particular actions inside of the specified apps. Also you can group apps together (e.g I have a "morning coffee" option where I have instant access to all the apps I usually need in the morning: tomtom navigation, BBC news, stitcher, weather live, NY times, anylist, Evernote AP news etc) .

Of course this isn't exactly the same as what he had on the Android but it's pretty cool and worth a try.

    Hope that helps somewhat.

    Regards,

    Hi,

I heard someone asking what case to get for the Ipad Air 2.  I ordered the Clamcase Pro the first of Dec.  Just received it last week and so far I love it.  If you sign up for there e-mails, I received $20 of the price, which came to $149.  I had the Zagg Folio with the keyboard for my I-pad 3rd gen. and it worked great.  The reveiws on there new folio where not the greatest.  The nice thing about the Clamcase Pro you can fold it back onto the keyboard so you can use it with out the keyboard.  Some people complain the keyboard is not back lit, but that doesn't bother me.

    Keep up the great work.

    Hi Rob,

I just supported this Kickstarter project

    Merry Christmas

    Steve from AZ

This next Kickstarter project I want to mention not just because Steve and a few others supported it - but that helps - and not just because of what it is - but rather for how they presented themselves on Kickstarter - this is one of those projects if you are planning on doing a kickstarter project you should look closely at everything they did - because it was done really well. Kudos gentlemen - which is part of the reason why they are roughly 6 times their goal.  What is said product - It is the Next Keyboard - The Perfect keyboard for iPhone -  This one you have until Jan 24th at 9:43 PM CT to fund.  For $5 you get the keyboard.  They also have other levels you can fund at and that is one of the things I like about their project - if you scroll down you will see an infographic showing what you get for the different levels.

Their video is funny as well.

Again if you ever plan to do a kickstarter project - check out this one - take notes - take screen shots - you can learn a bunch from this one.  Oh and yeah if you want quote The perfect keyboard for iPhone - search for Next Keyboard two words at kickstarter dot com -  or for the link in Ep 334’s show notes.

    ipintm-laser-pointer-wireless-presenter-for-ios-an

We have another Kickstarter project to go over.  This one is from the same folks that brought us the iStick and the Pearl Compact Mirror - which I just received notification it has shipped and on its way to me.  Well their new Kickstarter project is the iPin Laser Pointer.  Quote iPin worlds smallest laser pointer and wireless presenter for iPhone and Android.  Turn your smartphone into a powerful presentation tool unquote.

Essentially for the iPhone it is a tiny laser pointer that fits inside your headphone jack.  You have until Feb 10th at 1:59 AM CT to fund this one - which right now needs your funding at it is at just 15k out of a goal of 50k -

If you do go to fund this one - make sure to pick the version for iPhone and not the android version. Their offerings are confusing probably one reason they have not hit their goal yet.

There are offerings for those at one price if you funded one of their previous projects and then pricing if you did not - and then there is some bundle pricing for their BTtogo accessory.  Again it gets confusing.  Oh and did I mention there is one version just for the iPhone 6 Plus - but only if it is not the EU version of the iPhone 6 plus.  Yeah like I said confusing.

I am a card carrying member of the EFF literally - and I have to take exception with their recent issues with Apple. EFF - REALLY you are going after Apple because of the Developer agreement. Yet - I guess for the end users - where End users are actually protected for privacy soooooo much better by Apple and iOS - than - the Sheered sheep Google calls endusers whose privacy is nonexistent and data is sold to the highest and not so highest bidders. EFF - Really - you are going after Apple here why? Someone at the EFF has their cranium stuck in their nether regions - just sayin

Essentially the EFF just released an official App for the EFF but only for Android - and not for iOS - and then went all postal on Apple for their Developer agreements - many of the items they took issue with for devs Apple has in place to protect the end users - like their complaint about Apple being able to kill any app at any time.  They said in their article

quote - Section 8 makes it clear that Apple can "revoke the digital certificate of any of Your Applications at any time." Steve Jobs once confirmed that Apple can remotely disable apps, even after they have been installed by users. This contract provision would appear to allow that. unquote

NO DUHHHH - This is all about protecting the end users in case a malicious app slips past the approval process.  Section 8 is one of the best security features Apple offers and for the EFF to take exception to that and plain not Get it - like I said someone at the EFF has their Cranium stuck in their Nether regions.  Sorry EFF - Really disappointed with the you on this one.

    separation-study/

Thanks to steve from AZ and others that sent in this next one.

Which may explain what is going on at the EFF - seems someone must have taken away the folks at the EFF’s iPhones - as that would explain their stupidity.  See a study from the University of Missouri found that when our iPhone is taken away we get dumb and jittery.  Like taking a caffeine laced stupid pill.

Ok what they actually said was quote that separating people from their iPhone not only causes Anxiety, but also reduces cognitive performance unquote  Yeah as I said - it is like taking a caffeine laced stupid pill.

What the University of Missouri actually recommended based on their study was quote These findings suggest that iPhone users should avoid parting with their phones during daily situations that involve a great deal of attention, such as taking tests, sitting in conferences or meetings, or completing important work assignments, as it could result in poorer cognitive performance on those tasks. unquote.

So there - now you have a survey from a Major University that says not only is it ok for you to have your iPhone with you - it is recommended that you have it.  So just point your significant other to this report the next time they tell you to get rid of your iPhone.

Of course I have no way of confirming this study as my iPhone is with me unless I am showering - and even then it is right outside the shower door.

    VOICEMAIL - JONATHAN_MAILDROPHELP

    Hi Rob,

In response to the discussion about setting up Exchange on an iDevice, be aware of the following gotcha:

I have a long username on the college campus where I work. I got tired of entering it, so I created a shortcut under settings, general, keyboard, shortcuts.

That saved me time for all the places where I needed to enter it repeatedly.

When I set up my email, calendar and contacts to sync with our exchange server, I kept getting errors that my password was invalid. I had our I.T. folks look at my setup screen and they insisted everything was fine, and they concluded that I must be entering the password incorrectly. I even changed my password, but still no luck!

It turned out I’d taken advantage of my shortcut to enter my user name, and shortcuts always terminate an entry with a space. Other services on our campus intranet did not mind the terminating space, but exchange did. As soon as I deleted the space, without even messing again with the password, my contacts calendar and work email all sync beautifully now.

By the way, I discovered the space because I’m a voiceover user. I asked voiceover to spell everything on the offending screen and the invisible space was revealed!

    Regards,

    Debby A, Cupertino, California.

    your-iphone-your-mac

I know I complained about Yosemite on the last episode.  So this episode I want to point out something neat I can do with Yosemite and my iPhone I could not do with early versions of OS Ten.  And that is display and record my iPhone screen quickly and easily.

Here are the basic steps - Credit to iMore for these steps.

    1. Connect the iOS device to your Mac using the Lightning cable.
    2. Open the Applications folder.
    3. Double-click on QuickTime Player.
    4. Click on the File menu.
    5. Select New Movie Recording.
    6. Click on the downward-facing arrow to the right of the record button.
    7. Under Camera, select the name of your iOS device.
    8. If you wish to record audio from the device, select its name in the Audiosource list.
    9. Click on the red record button to begin recording video from your iPhone.
    10. When you're done, click on the button again to stop recording.

I did this a few times already - it works great - just make sure to select the iPhone for both Audio and Video sources.

    vs-return-policy/

Thanks to Jim M and a few others that sent in this next one.

Which is that Apple is supposedly cracking down on users who abuse the new 14 day return policy.

From iDownload blog quote One reader explains that when Apple introduced the new 14-day return policy, he started treating this policy as a trial period of some sort. After spending about $40 in various apps to trial, he was able to get $25 refunded, but Apple took notice of his behavior and a message popping up in the App Store now warns him that he will no longer be eligible for refunds on new purchases. unquote

Seems that now that user and some others are seeing a message

quote  I acknowledge that if I download this app within fourteen days of tapping ‘Buy”, I will no longer be eligible to cancel this purchase. unquote.

Not sure if most or everyone is seeing that message now - or it is something apple put in place for those that trigger some algorithm as an abuser of the 14 day return policy.

From the crime blotter comes this next interesting story.  Seems some criminals or Chinese good fellas decided it would be a good idea to steal a few iPhones - to the tune of 240 brand new iPhones still in the box - still at the warehouse.  from the Xinhua news agency -

    quote

Police said the three men broke into the facility between Dec. 12 and 13 via a 50-cm hole dug out of the wall. One suspect  used to work as a driver for the logistics company that owned the warehouse and was familiar with the site.

They later sold the gadgets and spent most of the money on cars, gold, and gambling.”

    unquote

They were caught be cause you guessed it - the police had the serial numbers.  Duuuhhh.  Just because you know how to dig a tunnel - does not mean you know anything about iPhones.  If they were smart - they would have stole something like gold that is not easily traceable.

But good thing they like to dig - because I am sure they will be doing lots of that the next 15 to 20 years.

I wanted to get your opinion on updates to your iPhone.  I know Apple does a fantastic job at detailing what is within the over the air update. However, I recently had a carrier update from AT&T and was given two options (Not Now) or (Update). I wish they would provide information about the update to its consumer, before  I jump in to a blind update.  Am I missing a place were it is listed on my iPhone?  Or is there a website I would be able to go to to look it up .

Looks like lots of people were dreaming of a white christmas as in Apple Logo white.  According to Mobile Analytics firm Flurry - 51% of new mobile devices activated were iOS Devices - during the week of Christmas.  Samsung was a distant second at 18% or a ratio of 2.9 iOS devices activated per each sammy device.  The iPhone 6+ was one of the Top 5 devices activated during the week.

I guess this really is not news - we all know that Apple Rules Christmas.  I mean buying someone a smartphone that likely will be given away for free or 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 next month is not much of a present (i.e. Android phones) but getting them an iPhone or iPad - now that shows you love those kids or significant other.  Because is that not what Christmas is all about - buying your kids love with Electronics that have an Apple logo or Beats logo on them.

Or as I have said in the past - Getting someone an Android device for Christmas - is the same as buying your kid an Action Jackson when they really wanted the G.I. Joe with Kong fu Grip - it is just a trauma the kid will never get over - not even when 48 years old and running a Podcast.  Just Sayin

    really-overtake-apple-in-consumer-satisfaction/

If you have listened to this show before - you know I have not love for the Apple Hating press that is soooo quick to jump on Apple like a duck on a cheetoo for any possible bad news - even when it is not true or accurate.

Take the story that broke last month that had Apple Haters and Android fan bois tripping over themselves to re-report it - and that was supposedly Samsung had topped Apple in customer Satisfaction - with Zach Epstein from Boy Genius Report stating Samsung will finish 2014 with a much needed win.  Or Business Insiders - Julie Bort Stating that Why the change in customer satisfaction - The Larger sized iPhone 6 and 6 plus might be an issue.

And Endgadget stating that Bendgate probably didn’t help either.

Problem with all of them is they forget this thing covered in J-school 101 - it is called - FACT CHECK.  As in the survey sited came from May of 2014 - before the iPhone 6 and 6Plus even launched.  The company the survey is from is ACSI - and the survey was called the American Customer Satisfaction Index - and was from a survey they did between Jan 13 and Mar 11th 2014 - so Yeah - Anyone commenting about the iPhone 6 or 6+ or Bendgate - Ummm - No.  Again this is old data - and pre- iPhone 6 and 6+ - when many were pinning away for a larger iPhone which came this past fall.  The next survey from them will not be out until around May - but expect this time - people to pay much closer attention to it - unless of course it is positive for Apple - then most of those that misreported on it this time - will ignore it the next time - Right Zach and Julie.

    http://www.marco.org

I have mentioned Marco Arment on this show before.  He is someone I really respect as a coder and his ability to see market trends - and then act on those trends.  He is responsible for Tumblr, Instapaper and now Overcast - and has a very good podcast.

There are people I have met or talked with that think they are smarter then everyone else in the room - and there are those that know they are.   Marco would be in the later group - and that is not a bad thing.  Steve jobs was that way - Bob Camp one of my Mentors was that way as well.  There are only a few people I know that fall in that later group.  And again Marco is one I have deep respect for. These are the people that actually get really cool stuff done - because they have the confidence and tools to make good decisions.  That is called the set up.

Marco wrote a post last weekend that got a lot of play to say the least titled - Apple has lost the functional high ground.  It was a post he said that basically the quality of Apples software is not up to the level he and we have been used to.  He did state that Still Apples’ OS’s are much better than the alternatives - but that part of the reason for the degradation in quality from Apple compared to past OS’s is that Apple has put itself on these artificial time lines and that Apple really should not do a major update this year - but rather just fix all the bugs and get the OS’s up to Apples standards.

Because of the publicity - mostly with mis-quotes or partial quotes taken out of context - Marco wrote another Post saying he wished he did not write the first one.

But I want to say this - I agreed with Marco’s comments in the first post. Apples OS’s - both Mac and iOS - have had more bugs and issues than I have been used to.  I just updated to Yosemite and wow - it is slower than Mountain lion.  Little things like when I click on the volume control take seconds to show a response - and then don’t even have in the beeps to hear the level - or that you clicked it to adjust.  Netflix no longer works with Safari on my Cinema display - I have to use Chrome.  It has felt a little like death by a 1000’s paper cuts since updating.

And listeners to this show know of the issues with iOS 8 and not being able to update without issue until 8.1.  Heck just open Safari on your iPhone 6+ and put it in landscape mode - chances are it will crash on you.  Depending on the site you are visiting.

So what Marco said in his original post was true at least from what I see - it is just sad the Apple Haters picked and choosed what to report on and what to skip - like the part about iOS and OS X still being better than the competition.

As a Side note - I actually got an email from Marco Friday night after I had written the above - right after - Creepy - Marco are you in my Evernote account? ok - it was about Libsyn stuff - but still the timing was creepy.

    Store-Rings-in-2015-with-New-Records.html

Apple had a press release this past week - which I am sure had nothing at all to do with Marco’s post.  Just purely a coincidence in timing that is all.  That PR was titled - App Store Rings in 2015 with new records.

And it was about all the money Apple is making devs.

The first week of Jan 2015 set new records with nearly 1/2 a billion dollars in sales.

In 2014 Apps Generated over $10 Billion in Revenue for Devs and to date App store Devs have earned a combined $25 Billion.

They also talked about Apple Pay but really not numbers - just rah rah type stuff.  But I did get to use Apple Pay a few times on my trip to NY - including at the Toys R Us in times square and the Hershey’s store in times square.  Both worked without any issues.

While in NYC - I did test my connection speeds - per the last episode when I mentioned where T-Mobile supposedly had the higher speed LTE - Ummm - well not in Time Square they did not.  I did multiple tests and they came in between 3.72 to 9.9 on the download and 4.41 and 12.34 Mbps on the upload.  Not the >100 Mbps speed claimed in their recent release for NYC - It might be that way in other parts of the city - but not in Times Square.

For comparisons sake I just ran the same speed test in my house in Overland Park KS - not one of the ultra high speed locations - and I had 31 Mbps down and 16.2 Mbps up.  And I ran that test a few more times with the same or slightly higher speeds.  So again - I did not see that great new speed in NYC they talked about.

Thanks to Geoff D - who sent in his LTE speeds from T-mobile - from 30 miles north of Houston - he was getting 66.5 Up and 24.15 down.

    Rob,

Answer to Levi's question about how to set up exchange email on iPhone.

Go to settings, email, add account, tap exchange, enter your exchange email address and password. In my experience the email settings will auto configure so at this point you are done. However, it's possible that it doesn't. In that case you will need to enter the server address and toggle SSL on or off. You can get this info from your IT department.

    Hope that helps!

We are now over 1,800 members in our Google+ community and growing.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came out and had lost of comments was from Craig Lucas - whom asked quote

Now that the Apple Podcast App is a stock app, when do you think it'll get its updates? I've gone over to Overcast just to get away from the severe bugs that still plague it! unquote

There was some banter back and forth in the comments about the Podcasts App - but personally I use it more than anyone Podcast aggregator app - and it works very well for me.  If anyone has not tried it lately it is very much improved from the initial release and even the 2.0 release. That said Craig has a point on if it will get updates other than with major releases.

Still per some of the banter in the comments - I can say without out any shadow of any doubt - the Apple Podcasts App is the most used Aggregator app for Podcasts - So much so - that if you combined all the other aggregators apps for smartphones and computers - Including iTunes - Apples Podcasts App still beats them all.  It is now around 50% of all Podcast downloads - not Mobile download - ALL downloads on all platforms - 50%.  The closest thing to the Podcasts App is iTunes at around 15% - after that NOTHING is in double digits or even above 4%.

So regardless of what some people may feel about the Podcasts App - It is clearly the king of the hill and is now natively installed on over 1/2 a billion iOS devices.

Compare that to Zero installs of a native Podcasting App on Android - and you understand quickly why Podcasts are downloads 6 times more on iOS than Android.

Now don’t get me wrong - just because it is the most used does not make it the best - I know many that love Castro, Overcast and Downcast.  But from a usage number perspective they are not even close.

And since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Folks Go to today in iOS dot com slash community to join in.

One more from G+ I thought was interesting and this is from Myron Uecker

quote I noticed a message indicator on my T-Mobile app today on my iPhone. I looked at it and it said I had not restarted my device in two weeks, and they recommend you restart them on a regular basis. patent-flexible-phone/index.html

From you can't make this stuff up category. Apple this week was awarded a patent for a Flexible Phone. No word if that that is to retro cover the iPhone 6plus - oh come on - how could I not throw in that joke.

Actually this patent is for an iPhone that is supposed to Bend.  Or as they call it a Flexible Electronic Device

Said device would include flexible Screens, flexible batteries and flexible circuit boards.

As with most Apple Patents that are issued and no product is available at that time - it is likely we may never see said product.

But at least the Patent gives everyone a good laugh - All things considered.

    http://money.cnn.com/2015/01/02/technology/mobile/apple-

    iphone-lawsuit/index.html

Lawyer time - and this time there is a class action lawsuit because Apple’s 16 GB iPhone does not have 16 GB of free storage space.  Duhhhhh.

This is nothing new - and all devices OS chew up a bunch of their free space - we have talked before about this.

Apples OS typically takes up less space than the others.

With the 16GB iPhone 6Plus - iOS 8 takes up 20% of the storage.  it is 19% for the 6 - that is about 3GB.

Now Apple is not the only ones Lawyers have gone after they also went after MS for the surface tablet - where the 32 GB version actually had over 50% of the storage used by the OS.

Googles Kit Kat - the latest version of Android by the way is about 5.5 GB - but can be much bigger depending on what is added by Carriers.  It can be a little smaller for the Nexus with OEM crap.  But in all cases it is lager than iOS 8.

The Galaxy S4 early last year for a 16GB device had almost 50% used by Android and the Sammy additions to it. The S5 had over 50% of the 16GB used.

Fact is no Smartphone has the free storage the same as the total storage - but iOS devices do come closest.  Still - I have recommended and will continue to recommend you get at least the 64 GB version of any iOS device you are looking at.

Per this lawsuit this is just lawyers doing what they do - and Apple Haters doing what they do - over reporting on it.

Hopefully this one gets thrown out.

    http://9to5mac.com/2015/01/06/apple-watch-launch/

One of the rumors to come out this past week is that the Apple watch launch is expected in March with retail training set for Mid Feb.

Seems Apple is missing one of the best dates of the year for a watch purchase - Feb 14th - Valentines Day.

I really was thinking they would hit that date or the 13th actually for the launch of the Apple Watch.

Mind you it is sources familiar with the situation that are reporting this.

They also report that Pricing for the Stainless Steel and Sapphire model will start around $500 - vs the $349 price for the Sports model with glass - that apple already confirmed on pricing for.

The gold version is priced at - if you have to ask - it is not for you levels.

    25:24

    http://www.demoapplewatch.com/

But if you can’t wait to March or even Feb to see how the Apple watch will work - there is now a site where you can demo the Apple watch online - this is demoapplewatch dot com - clever and subtle URL.

You can click on the apps on the home screen and see them launch - click on the digital crown to return to the home screen.

And if you click on the iTunes app - you can play a song from coldplay.

This looks best when viewed on an iPhone.

again the site is demo apple watch dot com

Per said data Benedict found was that Samsungs share in China was down from 22% at the start of 2014 to 12.5% at the end of 2014.  Ouch  While Apples share up from 20% to start 2014 to over 25% to end 2015.

    Hi Rob,

This article is funny.  Well ok not for the poor people suckered into these devices  Please share this with the audience  I tell everybody I know about how insecure Android is.

    Regards,

    Mr Max

Thanks for the heads up on this article from ZDnet titled - Cheap black friday / Cyber monday Android tablets riffled with vulnerabilities and security headaches.   Wow - long title - why not just - Android Tablets are in secure - Duhhhhh

A security firm called Bluebook Labs purchase a dozen Black Friday Bargain Android tablets and what they found is enough to send any IT manager diving for cover.  Quote"Most of the devices ship with vulnerabilities and security misconfigurations," wrote Andrew Blaich, a security researcher at Bluebox Labs. "A few even include security backdoors. What seemed like great bargains turned out to be big security concerns. Unfortunately, unsuspecting consumers who purchase and use these devices will be putting their mobile data and passwords at risk. unquote said Andrew Blaich at Bluebox.

But really when has Android ever been associated with security.  And the cheaper the device the more likely you are going to have security issues.  As they state in the article you definitely don’t want to be doing any online banking on your Android Tablets.  I guess use it for Netflix and Angry birds and that is about it.

Thanks to Stephen W for this next one. And it is under the category - aren’t you glad you are not on Android.  Ok - that is a really broad category when you think about it.

Anyway.  This is also about the movie the Interview - that had all the controversy around Christmas - and not being shown in theaters because of threats.

Well a fake app was making its rounds in South Korea claiming you could download a copy of the movie - but actually it did normal Android Malware stuff and stole users bank account details instead.  Ooooppps.

Hey but only about 20,000 devices were infected.  We’ve seen worse.

    Hi Rob,

I have been using an app recently called PushBullet. It allows you to send links, files, messages to and from any of your devices including iOS, Android, Mac, Chrome and Windows.

For example I have it set up on my iPhone, iPad and Windows 8 laptop as well as Chrome. If i see something i want on one of my other devices, no matter which device I'm on i simply open PushBullet, select which device i want to send it to and click 'Push It' and it almost instantly appears on the device I'm sending it to.

I have used this for photo's, URL's, and directions among others.

I'm sure there are other ways to do this, save to Dropbox for example. But this is so much simpler and quicker.

    1325738-how-to-delete-all-photos-from-an-iphone-or-ipad

Hi Rob, Just wanted to share a fix I found with the community. My wife's iPhone (5s) had under 300 photos and a dozen videos, but in Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage and iTunes, was registering around 13 GB and just under 3000 photos. I took it to the Genius Bar and they told me to restore to factory settings, then restore her profile. This would force it to reload and fix the issue. I did that to no avail. I took it back to the Genius Bar and they said it was something in her profile and we'd have to restore it as a new phone and just use it like that. I wasn't willing to accept that, so I did some investigation on my own. I connected it to my Mac and ran iExplorer, browsed to the Media/DCIM folder and found folders numbered 100APPLE to 108APPLE. I copied them to my Mac and found that there really were almost 3000 photos in there. I found the link below and followed it for each folder (some I had to delete twice as they came back). This deleted all her photos, but I wasn't worried, because I had already copied them to the Mac. After the reboot, I checked her phone and it was fixed. This solution worked for me and hopefully will help others.

    Lou Valencia

    world-revolved-around-apple-inc-in-2014

The very excellent Daniel Eran Dilger from Apple Insider had a great editorial piece titled The world revolved around Apple in 2014.

It starts with this gem Quote In 2014, the world's journalists, investors and software developers all collectively discovered they'd been disastrously wrong about Apple in 2013. And with good reason. unquote.

And then I said - Can I hear an Amen.

I am not going to go over the whole article - Fair use and all that - plus I think his articles are must reads - but there is one other item in the article I wanted to mention - and that is with regards to Developers.

He points out how in 2013 - when Apple haters and Android fan boys in the press were at their worst - they were saying Android was winning, iPads were collapsing, 64 bit did not matter and all anyone wanted was the cheapest phone available.  And well in 2014 the world learned - what we have been saying all along - that is total poppy cock - or well words much stronger than that.

The coverage of Apple vs Samsung in 2014 is priceless and again the whole article is a must read. Especially for those that in 2013 - kept saying all that Apple doom and gloom as poppy cock - yeah this article just makes you stick your chest out an go yup - I knew I was right.

Search for the article - The world revolved around Apple, in 2014 in the show notes for Ep 333 at today in iOS dot com - or in the links in the Tii App.

    Hi Rob,

I have been frustrated with only ONE thing on my iPhone 6 Plus --the Camera App.

My wife and I have been fostering  the cutest 20-month old twin boys and we try to capture the funny and adorable things they do on video.

Today I learned something that I'd like to pass onto other iPhone photographers about the Camera app interface. I really should have figured this out sooner.

My frustrations with the Camera app came when I'd try to switch from Photo mode to Video mode. I thought the only way to do this was by using the swiping gesture to switch modes. I had missed many cute moments because the app didn't respond fast enough to my swipe gesture or it would sometimes do a different thing like adjust the exposure.

Today I discovered that I could just TAP the words "Video," "Photo" and other mode labels instead of swiping. I really should have known this, but the interface text seemed more like labels than buttons to me. But Apple shouldn't allow multiple gestures to do the same thing.

I hope that I was able to help other rookie iOS photographers out there capture their images more quickly.

Now the only peeve that I have with the Camera app is that photos don't use the whole screen area like videos do. The image is confined to the middle area, not allowing image capture at the two ends of the screen where the interface buttons reside. Other third party camera apps do allow for using these end areas. Hopefully iOS 8.2 will fix this.

    Thanks for your show!

Hey Rob, I have enjoyed the show for about 2 1/2 yrs. I try to buy from your advertisers when possible. I love my 6+. Big step up from the 5. I got this sexy little aluminum case on Ebay. Solid corners with two screws. Looks cool and should be good protection. I'm losing about 1 bar. I only have about 2 bars at work, so I'm offline part of the day. Just wanted throw a warning out there that metal cases can hurt your reception.

Hi Dana - yes - yes they can - thanks for the reminder.

Which leads us into this next story sent in from Michael. Which is about the Reach79 iPhone case that is supposed to give you up to 2X stronger signal so you can download faster. So the exact opposite of the Case Dana has.   I actually reached out to the company requesting a press sample - I will see what they say - but if anyone does get one of these Reach79 cases - please let me know if it works for you - it definitely sounds a little questionable or too good to be truths - which is why I reached out to them.  I would like to get one in my hands to do some testing.

    with-eu-14-day-refunds-you-keep-the-app-forever/#more-360289

Oh boy - This is not good news for devs.

A week ago Apple Introduced 14 day no questions asked refunds in the EU for App store and iTunes store purchases.

This seems to stem from some EU regulations - the big issues right now are two fold.  One - anyone for any reason or no reason at all can get their money back for app purchases.  But when they do - the App continues to work - IE you get the App for free forever - Gee can’t see anyone at all possibly abusing this.

What a nightmare this is going to be for Apple and Devs.  Essentially if you are a dev right now - you can just basically ignore any sales you were expecting or seeing from EU countries.  The numbers are about to get all turned around.

Oh and this is supposed to be the case for Music and movies as well - So basically you could buy a movie - watch it and then cancel the purchase.  The whole idea of having 2 weeks to get refunds for digital purchases is ridiculous - but apparently is EU law - a law that I am sure you will this year results in lots and lots of digital content being pulled from iTunes in the EU and other digital stores in the EU.

Will be interesting to see if Apple will be allowed to put in place a policy of you are only allowed X number of returns in X period of time before your account is closed.

Obviously - with the apps continuing to work after the purchased is canceled - is an issue Apple has caused and needs to address ASAP - but the EU law is the real issue here - and when Laws hurt those creating the content and apps - ultimately that is bad for consumers.  The same ones I am sure the lawmakers meant to protect.

Well Hector thanks for listening all the way through.

    Rob,

I wanted to write in with an app review. I love the feature the desktop web version of Google Maps has where you can adjust a route if you don't want exactly what Google gives you. For example, say you like a given route, but want to avoids Elm Street because it gives you nightmares. You can drag the route to avoid it. The problem is there's no way to get that route to your iPhone to use turn-by-turn navigation. InRoute is a great app that lets you drop several pins to create waypoints to customize your trip. After you're done, you can save your route or export it to one of several navigation apps, such as Apple Maps, Google, Waze, TomTom & Navigon. I like apps like Navigon that support "Full Nav" mode because they allow you to have more than one destination at a time. For apps that don't support multiple waypoints, an "Agenda Nav" loads each individually as you approach them. There are other great features as well, such as a graph that plots "curviness" of the route. There is a free version that gives you a few pins and a paid version that allows up to 25 pins for only a few dollars. It is a great app and I highly recommend it to those that want more control over their routes.

    Regards,

    Lou Valencia

Hi Rob, Happy New Year! Congratulations on having the most hours of podcasts in 2014 and best wishes for much similar success with your new podcast. In your latest episode of Today in iOS a listener reviewed the Lookout App that helped him find his iPhone when it's lost. In his review he mentioned two features of Lookout that he mistakenly believed Find My iPhone didn't have: the ability to find your phone using a computer and the ability to find your phone after the battery dies. I wrote an article about Find My iPhone last month at The Wonder of Tech that explains how the app has both of those features: Find My iPhone – The Very First App You Should Get. You can log into icloud.com from any computer to use Find My iPhone to locate your phone. Also, beginning with iOS 8 you can have Find My iPhone send the iPhone's location to iCloud right before the battery dies. That features is opt-in so many people don't realize it exists.

I wanted to clarify for your listeners that they don't need a 3rd party app to get the features

that the Lookout app has. Find My iPhone does it all! Cheers, Carolyn
