    TRANSCRIPT FOR EPISODE 342

Welcome to the show I am your host Rob and this is the Today in iOS podcast -  First up I want to thank JEFF for sending in the music you hear in the background. JEFF wrote:

    Hi Rob,

Thanks JEFF for the music and folks I will put the full song at the end of the episode.   I also want to thank JACK for sending in the Artwork for today's show.  JACK said the following:

    Hey Rob,

For this image I started in iDraw on my iPad Air, making a blue background texture with a gradient and a few cloud shapes.

I then exported the background from iDraw to my camera roll and opened it in Pixelmator. I then imported two iPhone 6 images and set the layers to multiply and reduced their transparency. See if you can identify the two images in the final artwork.

Next I exported the Pixelmator image to the camera roll and brought it back into iDraw.

In iDraw I added the text with a drop shadow and added a highlight and dark edge for create depth. I punched four holes through the background by creating white circles with an inner shadow.

That's how I created the artwork on the iPad. Pixelmator is an OK app on the iPad but is much better on the Mac. IDraw however is fantastic on both platforms. I really enjoy iDraw. It's easier to use and the iOS version has nearly all the features of the OS TEN version.

    Regards,

    Jack R

Well JACK Thanks again for sending in this artwork and folks you can see JACK'S artwork in the FREE Tii App via the BONUS button for ep 342 - or if you subscribe via iTunes on your computer as the album artwork and also as a stand alone post in the VIP section and at Facebook.com/todayinios.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote “By copying the work of others, Apple seems to admit it has fallen behind competitors. By this fall, their product will have more features and the new features may cause confusion. The new features bring with them design languages originally from Meego, Android, and BlackBerry. Apple users not familiar with how Android and BlackBerry operating systems work may be confused by how their iDevices no longer respond the same way.” unquote

Transcend Asset, Seeking Alpha 5 June 2014

HUH???  I mean really - HUH??  What the heck is he talking about?  It really seems the only ones confused are him and all those reading what he said.  Per the iDevices users being confused - Ummm no not so much as was witnessed by the 74 Million iPhones sold last quarter - Just Sayin

    beta-4-emoji-changes/

iOS 8.3 Beta 4 was released last week.  The biggest changes - other than bug fixes revolved first around the updating of the Emoji’s - as mentioned previously - some people were not happy with the industry standard emoji’s that Apple used and called them racist.

Apple has been tweaking them and now also makes it easier to select different versions of the emoji by tapping and holding to show different versions of the people emoji’s

The Emoji keyboard also now shows - recently added as a default.

Beta 4 also adds iMessage filtering - to separate messages sent from unknown senders,  and Beta 4 removed the beta label from iCloud Photo library.

Siri also gets expanded voice commands including queries to initiate calls over speaker phone  and there is now where you can skip the password for free app downloads.

Speculation about when iOS 8.3 goes gold is now starting - with some saying beta 4 is the last beta for 8.3 - and it will go gold around April 22nd.  Others say there is one more beta - and the release of 8.3 gold master will be in early.  May followed by a beta for 8.4.

Either way it is safe to say 8.3 will be live before June - as Apple will be having WWDC in early June - and they will likely release the beta for iOS 9 at WWDC if past years actions repeat this year.

    Hello Rob,

just a quick post on my testing with iOS 8.3 beta.  It appears that WiFried is solved?  I haven't had any issues jumping onto wifi or maintaining a connection and airdrop appears to work as expected (Finally!)

on the other hand while the app MacID works for me, my preferred auto-unock app NearLock is not working on 8.3 beta :-/

    Regards,

    Francisco T

Francisco - thanks for the feedback and it sounds like from others some of the bug squashing in 8.3 beta 4 is around the known bugs in support of carplay and compatibility issues between Apple Pay and China UnionPay network.

    http://www.cnet.com/news/apple-tv-gets-a-ted-talks-channel/

Lets talk Apple TV - and some new Tiles - or channels or Apps or what ever you want to call them.

There were a few new ones added this past week.  First up Apple added - Ted Talks, Tastemade and Young Hollywood.

There are over 1,900 TedTalks available.  For those not familiar those are sometimes very interesting other times completely self absorbed talks by people who are sometimes notable and others time not so much.  Covering topics that are broadly vague to specific obscure.  Oh and sometimes very interesting.  Think of TedTalks like a box of Chocolate - where 90% of the box is coconut and the other 10% is raspberry nugget.

The way to know who to avoid at a dinner party is the person that starts the conversation - Yesterday I saw the most interesting TedTalk on…   Yeah avoid that person like the plague.

If TedTalks are not to your Tastes - then maybe the Tastemade channel is.  It serves up original content about food and travel - but I am not sure if there is any content about traveling with food.

And finally there is Young Hollywood - this is just interview with waiters and waitresses in LA.  Oh - wait - sorry - it is a channel devoted to music, culture and the Young Hollywood lifestyle.  So wait - yes - it is about Waiters and Waitresses in LA.

And those were not the only additions for the week - the day after they were added - Apple also added - CNNgo which is a channel for viewing live and on demand news - on the go via your Apple TV which is tethered to your TV - which is tethered to your wall - and by Go - we mean go Sit in your chair and watch this. This is however the first foray of CNN onto Apple TV - And when it comes to providing news content on Apple TV - CNN only trails ABC News, Bloomberg TV, CBS News, CNBC News, PBS, Sky News, The Weather Channel, The WSJ Live and some guy on Vimeo with a Camera pointed at an overpass that clips off the tops of Trucks - so yeah - CNN was all over Apple TV like a duck on cheetoo.

    http://9to5mac.com/2015/03/25/apple-tv-cnn/

    11:06

    http://9to5mac.com/2015/03/24/how-to-hide-

    rearrange-apple-tv-channels/

Ok - per all these new Apple TV channels - how many of you actually use it for anything other than Netflix - and a raise of hands - says - ooh - that is not many.  Yeah for most of you - 60+ channels - just means well nothing.  But if you are someone that uses more then just netflix - but not much more  - getting some of the stranger and more obscure channels like - the Albanian Body Surfing and back waxing Channel - out of the way may be something you want to do.

You can either move it or a similar channel to the bottom of the list - you do that by moving the select box to the channel and then pushing and holding the main button.  Once it starts wobbling - move it where you want it.

But sometimes - just the thought of the Albanian body surfing and back waxing channel is too much to bare and you need to delete or really hide that channel - to do that again select the icon you want to hide - once it starts wobbling - press the play / pause button to activate the sub-menu of options - then select Hide This item.

You can also go to the Settings App - and select Main Menu - and then go to the list of all the channels - and change the settings from Show - which means it is being shown - to Hide - which means it is being hidden.  That is the faster method for hiding multiple channels.

I am curious - let me now other than Netflix and Youtube - what channels do you watch on Apple TV?

And how many do your regularly watch?

We are very happy to have Casper back as a sponsor - Casper is an online retailer and manufacturer of Premium mattresses for a fraction of the price you are used to paying.

Have you ever purchased a mattress by sitting on it for just a few minutes at the store only later to regret it.  That happened with us for my Oldest son's mattress.  We thought we purchased a good mattress - but oh my - we learned we did not - we would lay down with him to get him to go to sleep and as we tried to get up he would hear us and feel us moving and would wake up - very very frustrating. But we were stuck with the Mattress -  However With Casper you get a 100 day risk free trial period.  You don't like it you get your money back and they come and pick it back up and donate it to a charity.  That said - the mattress they sent is great and is definitely not going back. It is a mix of Latex foam and Memory foam. No noisy springs to wake up your kid or significant other when you get up to sneak some girl scout cookies from the pantry.

HERE is why I really love this mattress When we received our Casper mattress for my son - the first three nights he slept through the whole night - The last time he slept 3 nights in a row through the whole night - yeah that would be NEVER - not even in the womb.

Casper did an incredible job on the engineering and feel of this mattress - the nights I record episodes - the boys go and sleep with mom - so when I am done I can sleep on his bed now and my back is not all out of whack in the morning.

But just as important as quality is Pricing and the pricing is really great.   Twin Mattresses are just $500, they also have Twin XL for $600, Full for $750, Queen for $850 and then King and Cal King - for  $950.  That is less than half the price my Parents just paid for their King sized mattress and they can't stand their mattress.  Like I said you have 100 days to return it risk free. And if you go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code tii - you will save $50 off those prices.

This is an american made mattress with delivery right now for the US and Canada only and it is free delivery. When said mattress is delivered - it is from UPS - in a squarish box that you think no way is there a mattress in there - But you get a cool little tool to cut open the package and the mattress opens up and expands to form.

As they say You spend 1/3 of your life in bed - ok maybe more if you have Apple TV and Netflix in bedroom.  And for the cost of an iPad - is it not worth getting the best nights sleep possible - and that is what you will get with Casper or what your kids will get.  Again to Save $50 off of the prices I mentioned go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code t i i - all lower case on the promo code.  again casper dot com / tii - promo code tii to save $50 - thanks Casper for the great mattress for my son and for sponsoring this show.

    Hello Rob,

I am in the process of remodeling a room in my house as a bar, and something I really want to get is a jukebox that is compatible with an iPhone or iPad via Bluetooth or home kit. I've been searching online and haven't been too successful in finding exactly what I want.  I was hoping you or your listeners would have any idea on where to find one that is similar to the TouchTunes jukebox, such as having its own touchscreen and the ability to select my iTunes Match of my iOS device via the jukebox itself.  I am willing to settle for one that I would have to dock my iOS device on, but I'm trying to find a better solution.  Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks for your show, it's still my favorite podcast!

    Regards,

    Jason H

If anyone can make a recommendation to Jason - email it to us at today in iOS at gmail dot com or call us 206-666-6364 - that is 206-moon-dog

    Rob

Been a Today in iPhone (now IOS) listener for years; right from the start. Thanks for the great advice sprinkled with good humor. Most important to me has been all the info about dealing with updates and how each one fixes this or that.

I use you sage advice contained in your PDF on how to do the various updates - and I have a time saving step for those of us who use iTune and a computer to sync/back-up their devices.

I begin the download of the update before starting Step 1, then I can work in parallel to do the rest of the steps while the update is downloading. Some people with fast cable modems might save 10 minutes, but those with slower DSL service could save 30 minutes.

Just a thought unless you see a potential risk of doing this in parallel.

    Keep up the good work!

    Regards

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came out was from Mark Henry who said the following

    Quote

If you have an old iOS device that doesn't hold a charge anymore, you may want to consider wiping off the dust and put it to use. I recently revived my iPhone 4s from the dead with a new battery and back glass (which had been cracked). It holds a charge like the first day it was purchased, and looks great again!

    Resources include: iFixit, and iPhone4parts.com

    Unquote

And I mention that because that post reminded me that my Sons iPhone 4S screen was cracked and his Battery was not lasting close to as long as it should.  So I went to iFixit and ordered a new battery for the 4S - which now was only 24.95.  I then used the code - FIXIT2015 - and saved $5 - which is also what shipping cost - so it was like getting free shipping.  I don’t get anything if you use it - it is just one I found that works.

Next I went to iPhone4parts.com and ordered a replacement screen - as they have replacement screens for just $15 and I could get a blue one - which is my son’s favorite color.  They offered free shipping.

So for my Son’s birthday part of his gifts are a new screen and a new battery for his iPhone 4S - so as long as I don’t destroy it replacing the screen - for $40 and a couple of hours of work - which he will help with - he should be a happy camper.  I will let you now how the service goes with both on a future episode. And the quality of the screen and battery life.

Thanks Mark for that post as it reminded me to get those items ordered.

And since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Folks Go to today in iOS dot com slash community to join in.

    shows-40-per-cent-of-iphone-owners-would-buy-

    apple-watch/article23522205/

Thanks to Skip for this next one:  Which is another poll about those interested in getting an Apple Watch.  This one said 40% of Adult iPhone owners in the US are interested in buying an Apple Watch.

Well actually this is an extension of the poll I mentioned last time - at that point the poll was for 1,200 people - now it is up to 2,500 people.

The results are basically the same with 24 % over all expressing an interest in purchasing the Apple watch include 10% that are very interested.  And then when you look at iPhone owners it is about 40% interest in buying an Apple watch and 17% very interested.

In any case there seems to be a lot of people interested or very interested in buying an Apple watch - NOW - which is before anyone really gets their wrists under one.  Will be interesting to see if those numbers change after April 10th - when people start playing with them in the stores.

    25:27

    http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-watch-

    development-issues-every-stage-jony-ive-2015-3

Going from Surveys about the Apple Watch to Rumors - there was a post in Business Insider titled - Apple Watch has had issues at every stage of development.  Because you know no new products ever have problems at every stage of development - that is kind of why they are stages.

Any way this article had your typical sources quote familiar with unquote Apple and their logistics.  One source said Apple may have cut initial shipments in half.  Essentially these sources are saying supplies will be tight at launch.  Hmmm a brand new category of Product from Apple and supplies will be tight at launch - WOW did not see that coming - I mean unless you know you look back at launch of all other new Apple products - and realize they also were restricted in supply at launch.

As I said on previous episodes - expect supplies to remain tight on Apple watch through the summer.

If you know you want an Apple Watch and you know you want it day one of availability - then don’t wait for your appointment to try one on - order it on April 10th when pre-orders start.  Go on line now - figure out exactly which one you want - and get ready for April 10th to order it.

For everyone else - take your time - and make sure the Apple watch is really for you.  It is not cheap - especially once you get past the base models.  But then you are moving more into jewelry then technology.

    http://www.macworld.com/article/2899494/get-

    ready-for-a-new-apple-store-experience-when-

    apple-watch-previews-start.html

Thanks to Dr. John and others for this next one.  Which talks about the Apple Store experience with regards to the Apple Watch.

First note - on April 10th Apple stores will have Apple Watches for you to try on - 15 minutes per person - an Appointment is required - which you can’t even book until April 10th.  Again 15 minutes is it - unless  you want to look at the Apple Watch Edition - you know the $10,000 dollar plus version then you get 30 minutes.  So again April 10th is when you can make your appointment to check out the Apple watch in person and you do need said appointment.

If you do get to an Apple store on between April 10th and the 24th and try on an Apple watch and play with it - make sure to call into the show with your thoughts and feedback.  206-666-6364 that’s 206-moon-dog - or email in to today in iOS at gmail dot com.

Let me know which way you were leaning before trying it on - and then afterwards - what your thoughts are.  Will be interesting to see which way the wrist under experience with the Apple watch pushes people.  Especially with just 15 minutes of time allowed.

    http://www.buzzfeed.com/johnpaczkowski/new-

    apple-tv-set-top-will-debut-this-summer-with-app-store-s

Thanks to Aric B and many many others for this next one - which is a rumor that you know I am just going to buy into hook / line and sinker.  It is that Come WWDC Apple will introduce a new Apple TV and it will have an App store and at WWDC they will release the Dev Kit for it.  This rumor comes from John Paczkowski with buzzed - formerly with RE/Code formerly all things D - and he is someone that was quote plugged in unquote with new news out of Cupertino - when they needed to leak said news early.

What John said to expect is an updated exterior design.  And greatly updated internals - with an A8 chip or some variant of the A8.  A big increase from the 8GB currently onboard the now $69 version.  And an greatly improved OS that will support Siri voice control of Apple TV via the remote.

Plus of course it will work with Homekit enabled devices - likely becoming the hub for Homekit.

No word yet on Pricing.  But it is safe to say $99 would be the min price to expect - and if Apple keeps the $69 current Apple TV on the market - don’t be surprised to see the price at $199 - my speculation on the pricing there - not John’s.

Speaking of WWDC - based on some leaked info for time booked at the Mascone center WWDC this year looks to be the week of June 8th.

Tickets for WWDC - which we used to talk abut selling out in Months then weeks - then days - then hours - then minutes - last year went to a lottery.  Expect the same this year - and expect Apple to announce the details for the lottery if not this week then the following week.

Hi Rob: I've never taken any of the Apple Car rumours seriously. I thought that the idea of Apple in the auto industry was ridiculous. This article had me reducing some of my skeptism.

PS. I've been using and loving an app called Launcher, by Cromulent Labs. It's a widget that allows iOS 8 users to run apps from the Notification Center. The basic app is free with a $3 in app purchase that allows you to add more apps as well as adjust the size. It doesn't support all apps but there is quite a good mix. I have 18 of my most used apps available for the ready in Notification Center. (the max with the pro version). I really like this. Also, I reached out to the dev. because running it on iPad Air doesn't do landscape (Yech) and iCloud syncing might be useful. I got a prompt response indicating that these two items were in the pipeline.

    Regards,

    Bob H, Ontario

Bob - thanks for the link to the article titled Apple’s Drive for world auto dominance spooks the industry.  Which is a nice long article and does make some very good points.  Do I think Apple will develop an Apple Car for lack of a better name - Well the hiring they are doing does point in that direction.  Previous rumors about project titan - seem to indicate it.  But developing and manufacturing are two different things.  It is possible - Apple did all these hires to much better understand the Auto industry and how they can get their electronics and OS into cars made by others.

But some hires - like the ones for Battery design - do point more towards Apple some day getting into the Electric Car market to take on Tesla and BMW in that space.

I just need to ask this - what size sticker is going to come with an Apple car?

    samsung-galaxy-s6-comes-with-56-apps-preinstalled

Thanks to Martin for this next one - which is about the new Sammy Galaxy S6 - which comes with 56 Apps Preinstalled.

Of which you can not delete and remove them from your phone.  Which is actually different than what Sammy originally said would be possible. Note - there may be some ways to actually uninstall the apps - but it seems they are a little more tech intensive - but users can more easily disable them.  Still it is a lot of apps pre-installed.

Most of the bloat ware are not Sammy apps - but Apps Sammy is getting a kickback to install on said device.  Sweet.  I really would not be giving Sammy a hard time about their 56 mostly bloatware apps - if at least one of them was a podcast aggregator app.

But all of this really got me asking how many native apps are there now for iOS 8.2 - and it looks to be 31 apps you can not un-install - which is much less than 56 apps for Sammy.  I also think the big difference is Apple native Apps are all made by Apple - where the apps on the Galaxy S6 are not all made by Sammy - many are pay for placement to Sammy.

Still 31 Apps is a lot more than with the Original iPhone - and that is not counting Apps you will want to install right away like Findmy iPhone, Garageband, Pages, Numbers and Keynote.

Which is why getting a 16 GB version of any iOS device does not make sense - you need as a min 64 GB these days.

    Hi Rob,

I sure regret upgrading my iPhone 6 to 8.2 last night. Now when I connect the phone to my car's (Infiniti g35) iPod connector, it cannot play audio anymore. All I see is "There is no song" shown on car display. The music is playing on device but no sound is coming out. Once I unplug, the audio is working again. Also, car recognizes that device is connected and iPhone is charging. Any help?

I checked and it's too late to downgrade to 8.1.3, so by being cautious I missed that train. Is there some way to downgrade still?

    Thanks for a great show,

-- Alex from Walnut Creek, CA.

Has anybody else seen high cellular data usage lately, possibly since the 8.2 upgrade? I'm not sure if it is from something I changed (like switching to optimized photos) but I got notified by T-Mobile today that I had used up my entire standard allotment and my plan just started!

When I looked at Cellular Data on my device I see that "Documents & Sync" under System Services is using most of my cellular data. It is the same for both my iPhone and iPad.

When he posted that on the 23rd - I went and reset my data usage - and between the 23rd and 27th - four full days - my total data usage was 320 MB.  That is it.  So at least for me - I am not seeing a lot of usage for Cellular data since the update.  Seems most replying are seeing my type of data usage - but one other did say they saw an increase in data usage since 8.2 was installed.

How is your data usage since iOS 8.2 was installed -give us a call - 206-666-6364 - that is 206 moon dog or emails us at today in iOS at gmail dot com.

    Hi Rob,

Was just wondering if you are getting any complaints about battery life since the latest update of iOS 8.2. My battery life has been horrible since I have updated.? I mean really bad.

I also own a Pebble Watch. And this battery drain also came after there latest update. I understand you own a Pebble as well and was wondering if you were having any battery issues as well?

    the-first-watch-band-adapter-for-apple-watch

Hi Rob, I backed this one so I can buy the sport and add any band I want. Super great price and very communicative staff. Ian  from WV

And this one Ian is talking about is the Click in Kickstarter - which is an Apple Watch band adapter.  This lets you use any 22 mm watch band with the Apple watch.  They had a goal of 30k - they are over double that now - congrats.  You have until April 17th at 5:35 PM CT to fund this one.

Which will cost you $12.  Delivery of these adapters is scheduled now for May 2015.

Search for click in kickstarter dot com - or in the show notes for Ep 342 at today in iOS dot com or in the Tii App.

    https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/adappt-

    standard-bands-adapter-for-apple-watch

    Hi Rob,

This looks like a great idea to me. What so you think?

     Regards,

    Robert P

And what Robert P is talking about is the Adappt - spelled A D A P P T - over at indiegogo dot com.  And it is the same basic thing at the click.  Except they have not reached their goal yet.  Which is $50k - and they have only raised $13k so far.  You have until about April 24th to fund this one - or you can go with the click - as they are already funded.

They have a plastic version for $9 and an aluminum version for $29 - which I guess is why the Click is funded and they are not - the Click was much lower cost at $12 for a metal version.

But hey the Adappt does have a Gold and rose gold Apple Watch edition version for $3450 - so you know if you want to plunk down $10k plus for your Apple Watch edition - and none of the Apple Watch bands do it for you - you can then plunk down another $3450 to allow you to use 3rd party bands - or not.

Either way you go - Click or Adappt - or some other - it seems safe to say there will be many 3rd party options for you for a band for your Apple Watch - beyond what is on the Apple website.  So you may just want to get the Apple Watch sport with the basic band - and then look around for the perfect band for your tastes later on.

    44:54

    http://www.casetify.com/invite/je4rn5

Like say Casetify - that has the option for you to print your own custom image on the watch band.  You can upload your own images for the watch band and they will print out a custom band for you.

I was thinking of taking a photo of my wrist and then get the watch band printed to look like my wrist so it would give the illusion that the apple watch is floating on my wrist.

    Hmmm - Too geeky?

Anyway there is a link in the show notes that takes you to Casetify - it is a referral link - which means if you do purchase from them I get $10 - because well they made it really easy to get the link.

Look for the link Casetify - Custom Apple Watch straps in the show notes for Ep 342.

Hi Rob, hope you’re well. I wanted to ask you to please promote my new app on one of your upcoming shows. Here is my review of it. I give you full liberty to edit my review as you see fit.

"Hello fellow Today in iOS fans. Not being able to speak on your own is difficult. Talk For Me - Text to Speech is an app I have developed with the goal of making my life easier as well as the life of anyone else who can’t speak on their own. There are a lot of existing text to speech apps, but some are too expensive to try, while others are lacking in features. Talk For Me - Text to Speech is free. Type any text in the main text area or tap one of the six main custom buttons and your iOS device will talk for you. Want to set up more custom phrases? Swipe up and up again for more pages with custom editable buttons. Need even more? Save phrases in an archive database. This is great for saving partial sentences. A quick swipe left, select a sentence from your archive, and it will appear in the main window ready for you to complete. Once customized, this app will allow for more efficient communication. If you know anyone who may benefit from this app, please let them know about it. Please search my name, darrin altman, on the app store to easily find it or go to my web page (MobileTouchTech.com) for a preview video and more information.”

Thank you Rob. I also updated a couple of my other apps, so I may send you some codes soon. I just don’t want to overdo it and take advantage of your generosity and free advertising,

    Best regards,

    Darrin

    Hey Rob:

Things are getting better, slowly, with regard to ApplePay awareness.  Still, I just went through a McDonald's drive-thru and the cashier at the window almost added an APPLE PIE to my order. Oh well...

    Thanks for all you do,

    Mari in Cleveland

Hi Rob, Like many of your listeners who not only listen to your excellent podcast each week, but also listens to many other podcasts daily and weekly, I find my self fishing for my iPhone from my pockets multiple times a day to select a new podcast as new ones are finishing up.  This can be challenging when I already have other things in my hands like brief cases, shopping bags and/or dog leashes.

It sure seems like this situation is screaming out for an Apple Watch app solution.  No more fishing for the iPhone from the pocket or the purse.

Only problem is that in all of the published literature about the Apple Watch including everything that I have seen on the Apple website in the Apple Keynotes, I have never seen an icon for the Apple Podcast App on the Apple Watch.  This leaves me wondering just how the Apple Watch will interface with the Podcast App.  Have you read or heard anything on this subject from Apple or other sources?

    Regards,

    Will B.

    jailbreak-details/

There were some rumors that a Jailbreak for iOS 8.2 was going to be announced late this week at the Mobile Security Summit - but the TAIG jailbreak team did not make that announcement.

They did say the jailbreak is quote constrained by many factors unquote - and that they hope to release an 8.2 jailbreak as soon as they can.

As you know I said to stay away from 8.2 if you wanted to jailbreak - and at this time it sounds doubtful they will release an 8.2 jailbreak before 8.3 is released or if they do - it will not be much before.

In any case if you want to jailbreak you need to be on 8.1.2 or earlier.  Don’t upgrade to 8.2.

As you know if you have listened to this show for any period of time - I always say wait at least week after any updates to hear how that update is going and if it is safe to proceed.  And well it has been a week since iOS 8.2 and this is where we go over how it is going.

    Hi Rob,

I upgraded my iPhone 6 to iOS 8.2 and had no major problems. Although one game, dominations, lost its characters in its chat window, making it impossible to see what's going on. Logged a report on that issue to the developer.

Hi, Rob. I updated to iOS 8.2 just two hours after it came out, and it's been running really smoothly for me. I did not follow your recommended update procedure, but nevertheless, I'm really happy with the update. I know I took a chance, but it was totally worth it because VoiceOver doesn't randomly crash anymore. Thank goodness! As for the Apple press event, I have yet to see it. My BFF and I are going to watch it over FaceTime today. Based on what you said in the show, I'm not too happy with the one port connector on the new MacBook. And, who in their right mind would pay $10,000 for an Apple Watch Edition? That's just ridiculous! You can buy a Mac Pro for less than that. Despite its pricing, however, I'm still really excited about the Apple Watch. It could be the first accessible smart watch on the market for blind users, and if that's the case, I'm going to be looking at the cheapest model there is. I'm going to want an Apple Watch, but I'm going to have to get the entry level one. Oh well.

    Hi Rob

I have upgraded my iPhone 6 to iOS 8.2,  had no issue.  I have followed following steps

    1. Reset network settings

    2. Closed all open apps

    3. Upgraded to latest iTunes on my windows pc

    4. Backed and synced my iPhone

    5. Upgraded to iOS 8.2 via iTunes

    Regards

    Hi Rob

I am normally one of those who wait to least a few days before updating. However, I have had some spotty Bluetooth issues with my iPhone 6+ when listening to music or podcasts. The problem would go away temporarily when I reset network settings, but within a day would return. Basically it would skip and really make listening to music worthless.  I upgraded to 8.2 last night hoping that this would solve the problem. While the update went smoothly, the problem is still there. It skips on my cars' Bluetooth player as well as a JBL portable speaker, so it's not just a speaker problem.

Any help you or your listeners can provide would be great.

    Thanks.

    Mitch

    https://appleseed.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/

So if you are already bored with iOS 8.2 - and you ready to move on to iOS 8.3 - but you are not a dev - no fears - Apple is now allowing the common folk access to beta for iOS 8.3.  All you have to do is go to Appleseed.apple.com/sp/betaprogram - link in show notes of course.

You should go to that site via safari on your iOS device.

Then click the blue Sign up button - and go from there.  You will need an Apple ID - and the rights to sign away your first born or the at least two none vital organs.

If you are one of those people that used to jailbreak - but now is looking for a new iOS Thrill - you can signup today and get access to iOS 8.3 beta 3 which was released the end of last week.

This is NOT for those that don’t like when things break - Beta - means broken - and your job is to help them fix it.  Beta does not mean jump on twitter and complain that thinks are broken.

What do we know about 8.3 beta 3 -

Well for starters it has bug fixes and improvements.  It also now includes the Apple Watch App and Messages settings has a new Conversation list filtering feature.

In Messages - there is the option to report junk messages that are from unknown contacts.

One other tweak in 8.3 beta is the addition of a longer space bar - which makes typing easier.  as it move the period or dot ket further to the right.

But again 8.3 Beta 3 is more about bug fixes and optimization.

Hence why Apple Waited until Beta 3 until opening this up to the public.  Which is a good sign - that Apple understands getting bugs fixed and squashed at the beta phase.  More Beta Testers should mean more bugs found and fixed.

If you are playing around with 8.3 Beta 3 - give us a call 206-666-6364 that’s 206-moon-dog or email us - today in iOS at gmail dot com and let us know your thoughts / experiences.

Hi Rob - I received my Truman Set from Harry’s - Their blades beat the competition hands down and the foaming save gel is incredible.

    Regards,

    John Clarke

Thanks John for the feedback and thanks for supporting our sponsor  and I want to thank Harrys for sponsoring this episode - if you go to harrys dot com - that is h a r r y s dot com and use the promo code t i i - you will save $5 on your first order.

Lets face it guys one of the worst parts about shaving is tracking down that person to unlock to the display case so you can get your razors - the other worst part is the price you pay for said razors when you get to the check out counter.  Harry's helps on both those fronts - no need to go to the store - you just order on line and get the razors delivered right to your door with free shipping.  The starter kit The Truman Set is amazing - for $15 you get a razor - Foaming Shave Gel and 3 razor blades - all in a great package that screams GIFT ME GIFT ME - are you listening ladies.

And that new Foaming Shave Gel is great.  If you look at what it is made from you might not know if you should eat it or shave with it.  The ingredients include Licorice Root extract, a blend of Cucumber and Aloe - after using it my wife was asking what smelled sooo good.  It really is nice to shave with something that is not made from industrial chemicals.

I am 100% a full fledged Harrys customer - have been for almost a year - that is my blade - nothing else.  And they really are the best blades out - and that is not an accident - Harry’s purchased a German factory to make the blades for their razors.  They offer a close comfortable shave with each blade lasting well over a month.

look at my picture in the Banner for Harrys over on the Tii website and you will see me wearing my Warby Parker glasses on my Harry's shaven head.  And it just so happens that Jeff the co-founder of Harry's also co-founded Warby Parker.  That means you know you are getting the same great quality experience as you get with Warby Parker - and they have a good social mission where 1% of sales and at least 1% of their time is donated to organizations to help prep people for personal and professional success.  With Harrys.com You get a shave that feels really good from a company you can feel good about.

Once again go to Harrys.com now and save $5 off when you enter the code - t i i with your first purchase.  That is h a r r y s dot com and enter the coupon code T I I at check out to save $5 on your first purchase and start shaving better today or at least as soon as your new shave kit arrives at your door step.

Per the question about Google Hangouts on iOS and having multiple people.

    Hi Rob

Works great. I've done it over cellular & wifi, up to 6 people, walking on street, on the iPad or the phone. All works. Only issue is bandwidth.

    Hi

Yes Google Hangouts lets you do multiple people with the iPhone app. Between my brother and my cousins we had at least 6 people on there one night. Half of us had iPhones and half had Androids. It does drain the hell out of your battery though.

    Hi Rob,

is there any chance you can go over the release dates for the Apple watch and MacBook.

I just want to make sure I didn’t miss anything as they both look great and I want to make sure and pre-order.

I think I know that the Apple Watch is April 10th but not positive about the MacBook.  Thanks as always for the show, voted twice so far at the podcast awards.

Oh … I need go go vote again.

    Regards,

First - Yes - Folks remember to Vote every day for Today in iOS at Podcastawards dot com

Per the dates.  The Apple Watch will go on Pre-Order on April 10th - with availability on April 24th.

The New macbook will start shipping on April 10th - that likely means on April 10th you can walk into your local Apple store and walk out with one.  Likely - but not guaranteed.  There really are two configurations - a $1,300 version with 256 GB of storage and a 1.1 GHZ processor and a $1,600 version with 512 GB of storage and a 1.2 GHZ processor.  That is it.  Now there are 3 different colors - Space Grey - Silver and Gold.

    http://www.engadget.com/2015/03/10/apple-

    watch-has-8gb-storage/

Well we are learning a little more about the Apple Watch specs - specifically the storage - how much total and available.

As in 8 GB total - but just 2GB set aside for Music.  Now some people are complaining about that small amount.  But even if you encoded your music at 256kbps bit rate - that is 1,000 minutes of music or 16 Hours of music - which the Apple watch can’t get anywhere close to in battery life for constant playback.

There is also 75 MB set aside for photos - which does not sound like much until you realize Apple resizes the photos for your screen size - IE - they make the photos really small.

You can listen to the music that is stored on your Apple watch when you go out for a run or walk - and leave your phone behind. You can also look at your photos that are on your apple watch - so you could take a photo of your iPhone 6+ and put it on your Apple watch - and then when you are out for a jog if you start missing your iPhone 6+ you can look at a picture of it on your Apple Watch.

Per the remain 6GB - that seems to be reserved for the Operating software and Apple Watch native Apps.

Spin Time - Seems there was a report from research company IPSOS they surveyed over 12 hundred Americans between March 9th and 13th to gauge their interest in an Appel Watch.  And here is where the spin comes in - and how you can see which press is Apple fan boys - and which press is squarely in the back pocket of Google.

If the press reported or started with the head line - 25% of Americans want an Apple Watch - that positive slant puts then in the Apple Fan boy camp.  But if the title of the report is 69% not interested in an Apple watch - that came is in the Google paid us well category - and part of that in the back pocket of Google is Reuters - that had a post titled quote - Apple Watch not on shopping list for 69 % of Americans - unquote.  or Financialpost dot com with the title - Apple Watch may be a tough sell with Americans 69% not interested in buying gadget.  Or from Ubergizmo - 69% of Americans say no to the Apple Watch.

Contrast that to AppAdvice dot com with the post titled - Reuters reports that 25% of American want an Apple Watch. or from iMore - Over 60 Million americans interested in buying Apple Watch.  Or

If 25% of Americans really do want An Apple watch - a device not even on the Market - and another 6% are not sure - then well Apples job on Marketing is working well.  25% of American adults is a huge number - as iMore pointed out that is over 60 Million Americans.

But it is funny to see how these different articles took the same results and spun them 180 degrees apart with some making it look bad for Apple - and some including this show saying - Dang - 25% is pretty darn good.  That is a lot of interest in the Apple Watch.

By the way - just 8% of Americans wanted an iPad prior to its launch in 2010 - just to put that in perspective.

Here is a good headline I have not seen yet - 3 times more Americans interested in the Apple Watch prior to launch than were interested in the iPad prior to launch.

Or Apple Watch pre launch interest 3 times greater than iPads.

Or you could say 69% of Americans flip the bird to the Apple watch - I mean if link bait is your thing.

Thanks to Mark H for this next one - which is a cartoon from Joy of Tech - which shows a decision matrix for picking the right Apple Watch for you.  And it is cute because well there are sooo many choices - by the time you get to the end of the decision matrix your head is ready to explode - as is very well illustrated in the cartoon.

But while this chart is funny - it is why it is funny that is sad - Apple traditionally gave is very very few choices - and we have become accustomed to minimal options to choose from - and now all of a sudden is the Apple watch - with a plethora of Strap options.  Not to mention multiple base units to choose from.

I mean even if you know you are going with the larger base unit - the Apple Watch Sport - are you getting Silver or Space gray 42 mm or 38 mm - Then come the bands - There are multiple Rubber, leather, and metal bands to choose from.  Some are even more money than the base unit.

Again for a customer base usually facing as many as 10 or 12 choices max - now you are presented with 100’s of different possible combinations.  And because of this - what you will be reading about and hearing about leading up to the Apple Watch launch and probably after the launch as well - is how confused buyers are about which version / options they want.

I am already seeing multiple articles like this coming from the Financial Press side - as they are concerned that decision Gate will paralyze buyers and they will be afraid to pull the trigger.

By the way - Yes - those beating up Apple already about offering too many choices are the same ones two years ago were beating up Apple for have too few choices vs Android.  Just Sayin.

Thanks to Chris in London and others that sent in links on this next one - which is about the Rumor - again - of an Apple Web TV service.

Why I bring it up now is the Wall Street Journal is reporting it this time.  Essentially the rumor this time around is Apple will launch a TV streaming service in September.  It would be around 25 channels and cost between $30 and $40 a month  - and it will be announced most likely at WWDC.

Initially channels would be from ABC, CBS and FOX -  No NBC.  Apple is also apparently talking to Disney as well.

Now this is not Just something for Apple TV - this would be where you could get the Streaming TV service on any iOS device and Apple TV - which really is an iOS device.

Why this rumor is getting enough legs to warrant an article from the WSJ and for stocks in Cable companies to take a hit today - is the recent announcement / partnership with HBO for their streaming offering.  That seems to give the rumor a higher level of credibility this time around.

Will be interesting to see what if Anything Apple rolls out per this rumor - what stations are included and the COST.  COST is a big factor.

Hi Rob,Makes me want to put links in the front pages of all JoSara MeDia books that say “no malware included” on the Play store. Best, Larry

And what Larry is talking about is an Article titled - Google Play books is crawling with Fake Guides that promise Cracked Android APK’s Provide only Malware and Phishing Scams.

Seems there are a multiple books in the google Play store where they are just a few pages long - and really are a guide on where to download the cracked app.  So essentially when Android users are doing is paying a couple of bucks to get the links on where to download a cracked app for free.

But what they wind up getting instead is apps with Malware - and well good for them.  Serves them right.  I mean what the heck were they expecting.

Again another good reason to move completely over to the light side of iOS from the dark side of Android.

    Hi Rob,

I wanted to ask you how to use the Notify feature within mail.  It is located on the subject line.  Upon pressing notify I am given an option to (Notify Me) I select it and I send my email.  Is this supposed to notify me when they respond to my email? even if I do not have it set up to have the server push me new mail?  It should notify me like a iMessage right?  Thanks for all you do.

    Regards,

    Jonah

Hi Jonah - it will put a push notification on the top of the screen or on the lock screen when any message is replied to in the email string - this is not - repeat NOT a notification of when it is read - it is a notification of when someone replies to an email in that string.

This is a way if you have an important message string - you can flag it to give you a notification when a new reply comes in.

I guess we should also point out where this is - when you create or even reply to an email - if you tap in the subject line off to the right you will see a bell normally it is a white bell with a blue outline.  if you tap on that bell you get the following options:

Notify Me or Cancel.  If you choose Notify Me - again you will receive a notification when anyone replies to this email thread.

It works nice - and yes this is per the Native iOS mail app.  Jonah - thanks for asking about it.

    Hi Rob,

I couldn't wait for Apple Watch to try a wearable (never owned one), so I bought a Pebble Watch  (the $100 one, black color). I know you mention that you have the watch on your show. I actually like it a lot more than I thought. It is paired to my iPhone 5s.   Maybe I would be better off with Pebble Time instead of Apple Watch. Don't know. Would love to hear your thoughts about which you like better, on your show.

    Regards,

    Itamar

    West Hills, CA

And to go along with that:

    Hi Rob,

I just wanted to say thank you for being the only Apple Podcast of the all I listen to that said its up to the person to decide what smart watch is best for their needs Apple watch or Pebble Time. All the other podcast I listen too just jumped on the Apple watch and how it's so much better it is then the Pebble Time. When it really comes down to exactly what you said is which smart watch best meets your needs.

    Regards,

    Bobby H

Hi Bobby and Itamar - Thanks for the kind words - and yes folks - you need to stop and think why you need a smart watch.  I do believe for many a pebble will be enough.  I know for me there are a couple of things the Apple watch can do that make it worth while - the key one being able to answer phone calls anywhere in the house.  But with the Pebble Time - it actually has over a weeks battery life and that goes up to over 10 days with the Pebble Time Steel.  The good news is no one is holding a gun to anyones head and saying pick one - and pick one now.  You have time to go to the apple store and try out the Apple Watch.  See how it looks - and feels.  You have time to hear me talking about it - and you friends talking about it.  If you are not sure - definitely wait.  $400 is a pretty good amount of money to spend on something you are not sure on.

    Hi Rob,

I remembered that you had mentioned the SOS charger [kickstarter project].

did you ever received the charger? i'm just curious

i have written them three separate emails and one post. and i have yet to receive any response except for a "canned" email replay. the latest post has them postponing the "red" model but i didn't order that color; i had the original blue.

    Regards,

    Escent

Ok - are you just trying to rub salt in my kickstarter wound - no - no I have not received it.  Nothing - Nada - zip - No crank for me.

But any time I can dig a little at SOS Charger - I will - because - now it is a joke.

    Rob

Per Apple pay there was a caller a few episodes ago wanting to change card or order they were in.  I found a way to change the order that they can be in.

To do this put your finger on the card for a few seconds then you can move you're cards in to any order you want to.

Thank for all the advice from you and the callers.

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/

    1843570774/monowear-a-band-

    for-every-occasion

Well last episode I mentioned that bands for the Apple Watch would be popular this fall and on Kickstarter - and Already there is a kickstarter project for bands for the Apple Watch.

This one was called - Time for Change - A band for every occasion

And it was from MonoWear Design - and I say was - because right before recording this episode the project was suspended.

They had raised over 60% of their funding goal and were on track to easily hit their goal.

I did reach out to them to see if they suspended it or if Kickstarter / Apple forced them to suspend it. And Leslie responded back ASAP at 1:00 AM in the morning CT - They let me know the project was suspended for a raffle idea they had - which Kickstarted so - no soup for you.

So they relaunch as a new project - this time called - Monowear - a band for every occasion.

And they already hit their goal of 15k and you have until April 15th at 11:43 AM CT to fund this.

What this project is offering is a multiple interchangeable watch bands for the Apple watch.  So if the plethora of Apple’s offerings was not too much or the pricing was - or you just did not see something on Apples side that jumped out at you or you just want to have a band that is different from everyone else - then check out Monowear one word at kickstarter dot com.

Pricing for these bands start at $45 for a nylon watch band.

$60 gets you a leather watch band.

$75 gets you a metal or mesh band.

They are estimating a May delivery for these - just in time for Fathers day.

Thanks go out to Michael for this next one - which is another Apple Watch related Kickstarter project - so far this one is not suspended.

The project name is Premium One - the docking station for Apple Watch and iPhone.  They have a goal of 35k - and have raised 17k so far so almost 50% of the way there.

They have until April 25th at 5:00 PM CT for you to fund them - so yes they should easily hit their goal.

What this is if you did catch it by the vague title is a stand and charge for your future Apple watch - with options for ones with charging docks for iPhone 5’s and 6’s and iPad’s and iPad Mini’s

Pricing starts at $45 for the Apple watch stand alone stand and charging dock. That is called the Premium One W1

Then there is the Premium One W2 - which is for the Apple Watch and one iPhone 6 or 5 series. Pricing for that starts at $89

And there is the Premium one W3 - which is for the Apple Watch, One iPhone 6 or 5 Series and one iPad Mini or iPad Air.  Pricing for the W3 starts at $129

These docks are very nice looking and made from Aircraft grade Aluminum and glass bead blasted and anodized for the quality look and feel.

Search for Premium One - two words in the links for ep 341 at todays in iOS dot com or at kickstarter dot com.

Thanks to Michael for this next one which is for the budget minded Apple Watch wearers that are looking for a dock for your Apple Watch.  Griffin will have a stand that will run you just $30.  It looks to not be made from Aircraft Aluminum - but rather Plastic.

    Hi Rob,

In today’s day and age smart phones have become most people’s lifelines. According to new statistics, smart phone users spend an average of 2.7 hours on their phones for fun a day. This brings about another startling fact that by 4:00 pm 77% of smart phones are dead and need to be recharged. myCharge’s RazorPlus is an answer to this problem, crafted from anodized aluminum, the ultra-thin Razor delivers an extra 13 hours talk time for your smartphone.

Would you be interested in learning more about how you could gain 13 more hours of talk time or trying the RazorPlus out for yourself?

    Best,

    Tessa

And to that I said Yes Tessa I would - because having an extra slim battery pack around is a huge plus - I took it with me on both my trips recently and this weekend when I went to KS Comicon - because as I was getting ready to leave I realized I forgot to charge up my phone - so I just grabbed it plugged in my iPhone and did not have to worry about the battery life the rest of the day.

If you are looking for a sleek / slim battery pack - I do really like this one - it is a 3,000 mAh battery which is really good.  It is called the Razorplus from myCharge - The list price is $60 - but right now I see it on Amazon for $48.

Look for the link in the show notes and thanks to myCharge for sending this along to test out for the show.

    Hey rob,

I've been listening to your podcast for a couple months now. And i really enjoy it and I value your opinion. I fell in love with apple product since the first iPhone came out but never actually got one until the iPhone 5. Partly because I couldn't offered one but now I can and I've bought ever phone since. I've been wanting the apple watch for a while now.  And now that I see it I think it looks cool and yea maybe I can use it for some stuff. But  From comments on YouTube people keep saying its to expensive and people don't wear watches any more. And I don't want to walk around looking like those guys wearing the Google glasses. Now don't get me wrong the money is no problem I do wear watches every now and then? But I just need your advise should I buy it? Or would that money better be kept in my savings. And if I don't get the apple watch I wouldn't want any other smart watch like the pebble. Please need your help!

    Sincerely, Harvey

    Hi Rob,

Per your question about why to Jailbreak:

On Sprint's unlimited plan for data and use tethering for my iPad which is not jail broken. I don't use like a ton of data just enough to do a few things on Tuesdays when my daughter does cheerleading. Anyway thought I would weigh in. Love the show thanks for all you do.

    Regards,

    John H

    Hi Rob!

I jailbreak for iCleaner mostly, but since Apple insists on slowing me down with their unnecessary animation delays... I also enjoy AdvancedSettings8. I cannot live without it. I toggled animations to be a lot faster. As in on an iPhone 5 running iOS 6 : ) I have been listening to your show for several years.

    Regards,

    Zak

    Hi Rob,

As a German Person living in Denmark  and having English-only speaking colleagues, I use daily three languages, switching according to the person I talk to - also while sitting in the car.  Siri is capable to understand and speak soon all of them; however switching between them needs a visit to the Settings panel. I would love a button or better a voice command in Siri to switch the language.

Is this already possible or can this be done?

It would be THE good reason for me to jailbreak....

    Best regards from Denmark

    Alex

    Hi Rob

I wanted to ask wether you or any of your listeners know of an iPhone app that allows me to video something with both cameras simultaneously. An annoying mate of mine who's an Android fanboy has that feature on his device.

So the concept is me videoing something whilst I'm included in the video via the FaceTime camera. Almost like a picture in picture.

    Kind regards

    Lee S

    16/the-pebble-time-is-not-serious-

    apple-watch-competition

I gave my opinion earlier per Apple Watch and Pebble Time.  And Myron Uecker posting a link to an article from Appleworld.today - which talks about the Pebble Time vs Apple watch as a competitor.  As I mentioned on the last episode or the one before when going over the Pebble Time’s pre-sales numbers on Kickstarter - they are tiny compared to what Apple will do in their first day of sales of the Apple Watch.

That said a product does not have to be a run away success to be valuable to you the individual - and again when it comes to picking a smart watch - you need to ask is the Watch more important than the smart or is the smart more important than the watch.  Pebble is a watch first with a few good features.  Apple Watch - is Smart first with many features - and oh it happens to be a watch you strap on your wrist.

Again if you are on the fence - this article is a good one to read.  Search for Pebble Time is not a serious Apple Watch Competitor in the show notes for Ep 341 at today in iOS dot com.  And Folks - please “chime” in on where you stand.  Call us 206-666-6364 - 206-moon-dog or send an email to toadyinios at gmail dot com

Are you on the Apple Watch side, the Pebble Time Side or hey are they done talking about that stupid Watch stuff yet.  FYI - Answer to that      question would be No.

One of the nice features of the Apple watch is for taking pictures - you can see what the camera sees on your iPhone and snap the picture remotely from your Apple Watch.

So you put the camera on a stand - point at your family - pre-view on your apple watch - and then remotely snap the picture from your Apple watch.

Looks like Apple has removed the Jawbone Up and Nike Fuel bands from the Apple stores.  Because I guess Apple does not like competition to their new products in their stores.  It is possible come September / October for the fall holiday season they may find their way back to the stores - but for now during the launch - it looks like Apple is trying to help their shoppers by reducing a few extra options in the Apple store - is that not so nice of Apple to be looking out for Consumers like that.

Thanks to Matt S for this next one.  Which is about some early feedback on Research Kit from Apple - this what Tim Cook said on Mad Money.

    Quote

It's really incredible in the first 24 hours of research kit we've had 11,000 people sign up for a study in cardiovascular disease through Stanford University's app. And, to put that in perspective-- Stanford has told us that it would have taken normally 50 medical centers an entire year to sign up that many participants. So, research kit is an absolute game changer.

    unquote

As I said on the last episode - I believe many years when we look back at that March 9th 2015 event - it is not the Apple Watch we will think was the important item - it will be Research Kit.

    Hey Rob,

I think I have come up with a new way for you to increase your audience. I updated from my 4s to a 6+ a couple of weeks ago. I listed my iPhone 4s on eBay and added the following to help out any iOS user.

Quote The following is an excellent source of iOS information: Today in iOS dot com About Tii: Today in iOS (Formerly - Today in iPhone) - Tii - was the first Podcast dedicated to the iPhone. The Podcast launched in April 2007 and we have been producing new episodes about once a week for over seven years. There is free Tii App available in the App Store. There is also a Google+ community dedicated to iOS devices and can be found via Tii. Both are hosted by Rob Walch quote

You could ask the Tii and Google+ community to add some info referencing your Podcasts etc. when they are selling any iOS devices.

If you want to see my listing, here it is (ending on March 22):

    Regards,

Thanks Earl - and those kind words and great idea get you a link in the show note - best of luck on your auction.

And folks if you are selling your iOS device on line and want to add in a link to Today in iOS dot com - it would be appreciated.

    hi rob,

I am an iphone 6 user.

I have realized the amazing improvements on the reer microphone on

this phone. However, I've noticed  that this microphone only captures

sound during video recording. When using the voice memos app, the app captures sound with the bottom microphone, which has a notable lower sound quality than the reer mik.I wanted to know if there is any app that can take advantage of the reer microphone, of the iphone?

It would be really nice to be able to take advantage of this great

microphone without having to record video.

looking forward to any suggestions you or your audience may have.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Hi Rob;

I've been a listener since the beginning - wonderful podcast!  I own a company of about 25 people and our phone system has finally died.  Everyone has a cell phone (mostly Apple, some "others") and I would like to use just the cells from now on.  I looked at using Google Voice to allow two numbers to each cell (one for business, the other is the person's personal line) but it does not look like the answer.  What do you suggest for IOS?

    Regards,

    Brian W

    Hi Rob,

Recently I dropped my iPhone in water... I did the "cover it in rice" thing and all is fine now. But during that time I took out my SIM card and put it in my old iPhone temporarily. Since I've put it back in my iPhone 6 when I send texts it's sending them through my gmail Apple ID instead of iMessage. Not a huge problem but definitely a weird glitch and I don't know how to fix it. Any help would be great. Thanks a bunch!

    Regards,

    Mitch

    Hi Rob,

I sent you an email about skipping music when I press the sleep button.

Well I found the cause and solution. I have an app called non-stop music. This app restarts the music player after a respringing.  They issued a fix. Sorry for the trouble but thanks for putting it out there.

Hey, this is Aaron from South Jersey, just wanted to weigh in on the latest Apple event. Im totally disgusted that Apple would release a netbook! of course they didn't call it that but the underpowered laptop certainly fits the category. The part that really burns me is the premium price tag! No one asked for this. People wanted a retina MacBook Air. The processor, the 480p camera, single port, and high price tag worries me! Apple has gotten money hungry, they know there are people who will buy this laptop because its gold and has an apple logo. For once I can finally say! This would have never happened if Steve Jobs was here! He would have never sold us a netbook!

    Aaron's 6

Aaron - I disagree - I think people do want this - it is really an iPad Pro - And it runs OS X - which makes it kind of a cross over.  I will be getting one - and will talk about it more in the future.  I am getting it for my Wife to use mainly - and to try it for editing podcasts.

    Hi Rob,

While "watch waiting", I made the attached image on my 4th gen ipad.

The Watch pic was captured from a podcast image of a sport watch. The image was then opened in PIXELMATOR  and quickly turned to gold with a slide of the Vintage tool. With background  & blue plastic band removed the image went to Sketchclub for final touches and text.

Looking forward to hearing your take on the new device..

A lot of speculation as you might expect heading into the apple event some speculation most got right - other speculation never had a chance.  So what was announced at the March 9th Apple Event.

    04:12

    http://www.apple.com/live/

First off Apple showed a video of a new Apple store opening in China - where Apple now has 21 stores open - and a total of 453 stores world wide.  Last quarter there were 120 Million customers that visited one of the Apple stores.

Next in the Event - Apple brought up the Apple TV - and I thought Yeah - Finally a new Apple TV - I knew saying a new one before every event would pay off eventually - and well eventually it will but just not this time.  Because what Apple did was more talk about HBO NOW app on Apple TV and streaming with no need for a Cable operator for JUST $14.99 a Month.  Or you know about the same as Netflix for Streaming AND one DVD option. HMMM - not a tough choice there for me - NETFLIX all the way.  Sorry I was not impressed with the HBO CEO who was really bad (monotone) AT READING THE TELEPROMPTER AND SUFFERED FROM GUIDO-ITIS - If you did not see the event - this was a dude over tanned with his shirt un-buttoned or or two buttons too many with no t-shirt underneath.  Almost right out of Goodfellas or I guess really the Sappranos would have been a better reference given he is the CEO of HBO.  But Still Yo - $14.99 a month is steep - but you get the first month free - so I guess if you sign up in April - pay for just may - and Cancel in June - you will get all the old Game of Thrones episodes - and all the new ones and be all caught up - and then you cancel - and it was cheaper than buying the last two seasons.  So maybe I go ahead and do that.  Starting in April is when this is available - Hope it is there for the 2nd gen Apple TV.

Per The Apple TV - Still I was hoping for a new device - but like I said it was not to be - Apple did say they have sold 25 Million units to date - and then they lowered the price on the 3rd gen - current unit to $69.

Which means if a new one is coming - maybe it will be WWDC when they announce the long awaited Apple TV app store.  Right - because if you listened to this show long enough you know I hoped / wished for that the last FEW years going into WWDC.  We shall see come June.

Tim announce that over 700 Million iPhones have been sold to date.  the iPhone 6 and 6+ have over a 99% Satisfaction rating.  Which Tim says is unheard of - unless you know have heard him say it one of the many times before on quarterly calls and other apple events.  Just sayin.

Per Apple Pay - they started with 6 banks when it was announced - and now they have over 2,500 banks signed up.  Since the announcement of Apple Pay they have tripled the number of different retailers accepting Apple Pay and much more than that on the location side - with now over 700,000 locations including Apple pay - including many vending machines.

On to Car Play - and Tim said now every major Car Brand has committed to supporting Car play.

And then into something new - Research kit.  It is for Medical Researchers - it allows them to create apps using the iPhone as a diagnostic tool and for Researchers to gather lots and lots of data - much more than ever before possible - and in true Apple fashion - they will be selling all that data - oh  wait - sorry - that would be google - lets start over - in true Apple fashion all the data from the users will be highly protected with the privacy of the user a major cornerstone of this offering.  There are already a few apps released built with Research kit available today.  One is from the University of Rochester called mPower

and it is for research and diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease.  This really does have the potential to be a powerful tool set for good - and Apple even opened up the code set as open source.  Kudos to Apple.

Tim then did a little tease - he showed a picture of the apple product offering where it shows side views of the Mac, Macbook, iPad, iPhone and Apple Watch.  So you thought he was going to talk Apple watch - but nope - he fooled us and said lets talk about Mac.

Then he introduced the new Mac Book - normally I skip over this for this show - but I will talk briefly about this because well we will get into that.

The new Mac Book is available in Silver, Space Grey and Gold - Yes - to say they are bringing the product lines together is an understatement.

The new Mac book is just 2 pounds in weight.  It has a 12” display.  and if you are a podcaster this is a huge feature - it is Fanless - this is the first fanless Mac since the Cube - it is quiet as in no sound at all.  That is great again for podcasters.

The downside - the max internal storage is 512 GB - right now I am over - well over 600 GB of my 750 GB storage - so no soup for me.   Availability is April 10th.

The new mac book also has just two ports - one is for the head phones - and the other is for everything else - and I mean everything else - there is no other ports - not even a power port.  This is a USB-C connector.  And if you want to connect to an external display - you connect to it.  Connect your iPhone or iPAd- you connect through it  - have photos on an SD card - yup go through it.  Need to connect to an external drive- up connect through it. Same for HDMI or VGA -  One PORT that is it.  So take your Mag safe power port, Thunder bolt, USB, SD Card slot, even lan cable - and if you want to connect any of those devices cords - they all have to go through one port.  And to me that is just one port to few. It means YOU have to have a hub for most everything you want to do.  And I present a lot - and I don’t like the idea of having to have a hub with me so I don’t run out of battery life during a presentation when I am connected to a VGA monitor.

But I bring all this up because a couple people asked - does this mean the end of the lightening port on iOS devices - why would Apple not just go to the USB-C port on future iOS devices.  I think looking at the specs for USB-C the answer is no - this is not the end of Lightning ports - why - because the lightning port allows for a thinner device than the USB-C port -

see the lightning port is a true Female port - there is nothing in it.  but the USB-C port had a middle connector - that means the plug is really female - not the port - and that means a thicker port.  So looking at the two ports specs - to me it looks like NO USB-C will not be replacing Lightning ports any time soon if ever on iOS devices.   Is it possible that iPad Lunch tray that was not announced will have both USB-C and Lightening ports - YES - I think that is possible.  But again at a min iOS devices going forward will still have lightning ports.

    http://www.zdnet.com/article/apple-watch-prices-march-9-event/

Ok - finally we are into where they talked about Apple Watch.  To be honest the first 25 minutes I did not hear anything new - it was just rehashing was they announced in September or had on their site or was available via leaks from the Dev kits.

The new news - came with the announcement of iOS 8.2 being released today on March 9th.  More on that in a bit.

Apple confirmed Pricing for the 32 MM and 42 MM Sport versions - $349 and $399 - nothing really new there.

Pricing was then announced for Apple Watch - which is the stainless steel version - and again for a go over on the versions - there is the Apple Watch Sport - the lower cost version made from aluminum.  The Apple Watch - which is the Stainless steel version and the Apple Watch Edition - which is the gold version.

Ok - back on Pricing for the Apple Watch - which is for the 32 mm version $549 to $1049 depending on the strap you choose. Add $50 for the 42 mm version.

Pricing for the Apple Watch Edition Starts at $10,000 - so no - the rumors about $4k or $5k were way way under the mark.

Pre-Orders start on April 10th.  Available in multiple countries on April 24th - as I had guessed previously.  Well at least for the US release.  All The countries getting the Apple Watch in April are Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

That is many more countries then originally expected.  That might mean supplies are not as limited as originally feared.

Apple will have Apple watches and the multitude of straps available for you to try one and try out at Apple stores in those countries.  It sounded like maybe as soon as April 10th.  That is something I need to check on.

    http://www.readability.com/m?url=http://www.idownloadblog.com/

    2015/03/09/apple-watch-battery-details/

Per the battery life as that was one of the biggest concerns - Apple is stating an 18 hour battery life with good usage.  What is good usage - checking the time 90 times per day, checking out up to 90 notifications, spending 45 minutes in apps and doing a 30-minute workout with music playback from the Watch, streamed from your iPhone via Bluetooth.

Use it more - get shorter batter life.  Use it less - expect it to go a good day.  And that 18 hours was per the 32 mm version - if you go to 42 mm version batter life will be better.

Per the 32 mm version - you will get up to three hours of Talk time - because you can use the Apple watch to answer your phone and talk to the person even if the phone is somewhere else in your house.  That to me is huge - there are plenty of times in my house my phone is in my office and I am well somewhere else and the phone rings - and I can see who it is - but answering it on my pebble is worthless.

Charge time from zero to 80% is 1.5 hours - Zero to 100% is 2.5 hours. Typically.  Expect Kickstarter projects to cut those times in half starting in 3, 2, 1…

All in All - the battery life was better then the fear mongers had been predicting - but clearly not nearly as good as a pebble - but then that is an apple to pebble comparison and not 100% fair.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came out was from Me - where I pinned a post to cover the Apple Live event and asked for comments in that post - there were well over 40 comments.

Here are a few select ones.

    From Harold Hart

ResearchKit - Looks impressive in terms of utilizing the power of mobile technology to help improve our health through better research...like this idea and the possible opportunities that may happen in this open source community.

Per the Mac Book - from Blair Jones

they lose me at the lack of connections.

Blair - I hear you there - To me I love the fanlessness of the Mac Book - I hate a single I/O port for everything except the headphone jack.  NO SD card slot, No Monitor or Thunderbolt port - no mag safe port - no standard USB port - just one USB-C port for all of that.  Come on Apple give us at least TWO ports.

    From Craig B

I don't see how they can do sleep tracking with an 18 hour battery, you have to charge it every night.

Good point - guess they want you to charge it up when you are watching HBO on your $69 Apple TV.

    From Keith F

I stopped wearing a watch a few years ago. Really didn't see anything today to make me go back to one. It's not nearly the hassle to pull out and use my iPhone that they like to make it sound. Overall there was nothing that wowed me.

    From Myron Uecker

I like my Garmin VivoSmart and would probably buy either the Pebble Time or Garmin VivoActive if I wanted something more. All of these watches give over a week battery life and can be worn anywhere.

    From Kent Kersey

I'm still wondering how interchange the bands will be

Well Kent - All bands will work on Any model of the same size - so 42 MM bands are for any 42 MM Apple watch models - be it the Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport or Apple Watch Edition

And since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

One funny quote from today’s event I saw was from Muscle Nerd who wrote quote I hope someone codes a ResearchKit app measuring sobriety level at the moment you put down $10,000 for an Apple Watch Edition unquote

    No Doubt.

Muscle nerd also warned would be updaters to iOS 8.2 to stay away if you plan to jailbreak.

    Hi Rob,

What are your thoughts on today;s Apple Event? I know, like me, you are continuously hoping for an updated Apple TV. I was so excited when Tim Cook started, I thought our wishes had finally been granted. The reduced price is nice and I am very excited about HBO, that is much cheaper than my local cable provider. Apple Watch……….thoughts? I am trying to convince myself that I “need” the Apple Watch version, a $700 price point though. Perhaps it will be the Sport for the first time around and we shall see what the 2nd Gen holds. I enjoy the show very much, and was quite pleased when I heard you mention my email on the last episode.

    REGARDS,

    Brenton N from Pittsburgh

Well Brenton - my take away from the event summarized here from what I already said. HBO announcement - hmmm - but still I probably will sign up for a couple of months just for game of thrones.

No new Apple TV - Really - how long must the pain go on. Please update it already.

Mac Book - Love the lack of Fan - hate the single port and 512 GB max storage. But may still buy it for my Wife to use - her old laptop is the old plastic Macbook and it is far from fanless as the bearing is shot on the fan. VERY VERY NOISY. Then I can try it out for Podcast production only. But definitely can not be my daily machine.

Per the Apple Watch - love that all versions can use all bands - for that size. Rumors had it where the sports version could not. Likely 99.999% likely will get the silver Apple Watch sport - just not sure which band. Maybe I will let my wife pick out a band for me for Fathers day.

My guess is the bands will be very popular come the holidays - and very popular on kickstarter.

I think the stainless steel version is beautiful - but I like you just can’t justify it for the first gen version.

But of all the things announced today - the one I think when we look back 10 years from now that we talk about having the biggest impact will be Research Kit. Maybe I am being overly optimistic - but more data means better analysis and better analysis means better cures and treatments. A watch is nice - but a cure to a disease - well that is priceless.

    Hi Rob,

I Fly SW weekly. Working in the look screen. Sorry don't think I did anything special to make it happen.

It only shows it at the airport if that matters.

Thanks Edgar - I have to do a quick trip this week to Wisconsin - so I will check it while at the airport more closely this time.

    Hi Rob,

In response to Louvie's (sp?) claim that the Pebble interferes with Bluetooth A2DP streaming (in my case to a headset) in episode 339, I can confidently second the claim. I've noticed very strange BT headset connectivity and default audio playback source changes, that go away when I don't wear my Pebble. I wonder how long this has been going on, and I sincerely hope someone at Pebble figures out what's going on and is able to create a software fix ASAP.

Here is a bonus tip from the Google+ community - this one coming from Jack Reeder who wrote.

Quote My iPad caps lock has not worked for quite a while. Thought it was the last iOS update but no one else seems to have the issue. Of course the solution was simple: settings > general > keyboard...turn caps lock ON. Don't know how it got turned off, thankfully frustration is over.  unquote

    Hi Rob,

Per my issue with siri acting up - I have the problem solved and it required Electrical tape around base of headphone jack. I have an expensive custom headset for my hearing aid but unlike the apple headset, the jack has a thin metal base at the bottom - causing contact and creating the issues I had with Siri and voice over. Since covering the base with electrical - no more problems - thank god as I had already replaced the iPhone 6 twice. Oddly I didn't have this issue with my iPhone 4s

Ok - as mentioned before iOS 8.2 was released today - March 9th.  As I said in my push message wait a week - the main reason for 8.2 is to support Apple Watch - and apple watch is not launching until the end of April - so if you are not having major issues - wait at lease a week until ep 341 is released and see how the update goes.

When you do update - make sure to check my recommended specs for updating - there is a PDF in the Tii App that goes over it - in the Tii app go to the episode list - tap on PDF at the top of the list and the PDF for updating is at the bottom of the list.

Right now there are only 4 PDF’s so the list is short.

Per iOS 8.2 and what it brings beyond what we talked about in previous episodes - and what I will summarize hopefully for the next show -there are bug fixes and security updates.  Which is why I am not saying to wait until April 24th to update - just wait a week or so.

Some of the Bug / Security fixes according to Apple that 8.2 addresses are - fixing an issue with core telephony where a remote attacker can cause a device to unexpectedly restart.

and issue with iCloud keychain where a man in the middle could execute arbitrary code.

A couple per possible malicious apps affecting system privileges.

And one where someone getting physical access may be able to see the home screen of the device even if the device is not unlocked.

The biggest new feature of iOS 8.2 is the Apple Watch App that is now included - whether you want it or not.

    There are Healthkit upgrades

However it is Bug Fixes that 8.2 will be most remembered for.  Fixing issues with health kit, the GMT issues in the calendar, Bluetooth fixes - especially with Car Kits, Bugs with Mail, Maps, Music, Voiceover and others.  Lots of bug fixes - well except for the wifi bug lots have complained about - that bug still seems to be there or at least was not mentioned as fixed.

If you are someone that did update to 8.2 - let me know how it is working for you.

    35:57

    https://developer.apple.com/support/appstore/

Before 8.2 was released Apple updated their iOS 8 update numbers - and right now 75% of iOS users have updated to iOS 8.  Not quite as good as the roughly 80% this time last year - but way way better than the latest version of Android -  Lollipop - which has a staggering 3.3% adoption rate in roughly the same time period. Actually the Last 4 major versions have a 69.5% adoption rate combined - which the oldest of the 4 was released in the fall of 2012.  Can you say fragmentation.

    http://www.imore.com/iphone-vs-android-and-hardware-encryption

Thanks to Ed T for this next one.  Which is an article talking about iOS devices by default hardware encryption of Data on their devices 5 years and running - and how on Android - when it was finally supported with Lollipop - yes the one being run by just 3.3% of the device - most of those devices have it turned off by default.

If security is your thing or you just need some ammo to shut up that annoying android fan boy - this article from iMore titled - iPhone vs Android and Hardware encryption - is a really good read.

But in a nutshell - especially since the 5S and its 64 Bit chip - apple has enjoyed very quick and efficient  Hardware encryption - while over on Android today - most manufacturers are choosing to turn it off by default including google because their architecture is so inefficient it is causing major performance issues.  Sweet.  Well unless you are forced to use one of those devices.

In Apple Stock news - Apple is finally joining the Dow.  To which many say it is about time.

When ever a new company is added to the dow - another is removed.  And the one Apple is basically booting is none other than AT&T - rather ironic.  likely these really means nothing for Apple stock.  One advantage of being in the dow is it is supposed to get a stock a little more visibility.  But for a stock like Apples where its market cap is twice the size of number 2 Exon - yeah - not like there is not anyone in the investing world that is not already familiar with Apple.

By the way don’t mistake being familiar with as the same thing as getting Apple -because clearly there are many many covering wall street that don’t get Apple never have and likely never will.  Which is very good for our how wrong were they segment.

In any case - Congrats to apple and well to the Dow for getting Apple.

Which is news that Apple extended its iPhone 5 Batter Replacement program into 2016.  This program was supposed to end on March 1st - but apple extended it out to Jan 2016.

Look for the link in the show notes on this to see if your iPhone 5 is eligible.  I know we mentioned it a couple of times when it kicked off - but if you have an iPhone 5 and have not checked to see if you can get your battery replaced - you really should.  It is a chance to get a brand new battery for no cost in your iPhone 5.

    release-date-delayed-yet-again-itbwcw.html

One of the rumors leading up to the Apple event was that Apple was pushing out the iPad lunch tray to a Fall launch.  And looking at todays event with it ending after 95 minutes - it sure does look like one new product was missing.

Now mind you many saying it was pushed back are the same ones that were originally saying it would be launched in the spring.  Funny how that works.

The reason given in most articles on the delay for the product never announced is that it is taking longer to secure components - especially the larger displays.

One other possible reason for the delay of the un-anounced iPad is so Apple could add an extra USB-C port.

Others are saying it is a strategic delay as to not compete with the new Mac Book.

I just love how rumored delays for components or rumored changes to specs or strategic changes - have some how delayed a product never even announced or hinted at by Apple.  Oh life in the Apple Rumor mill.

That all said - again - 95 minutes was a strange amount of time for an event - when Apple typically goes 2 hours.

A few of you sent in links to articles on this next one - which is about the FREAK Attack.   It has to do with an issue with SSL encryption or lack there of - due to rules by the US Govt back in the 90’s to make thing hackable basically.

Apple with iOS 8.2 did fix this issue with iOS devices - Android - yeah - good luck with that.  But google says they are working on a fix - that said it will only take a few years to get out to users.

Please note there is no evidence so far that any hackers have exploited this weakness - it was and is believed to be a theoretical weakness - but one put in place by bad policy decisions by the US Govt 20 years ago.

That said when you update to iOS 8.2 next week - you will have closed that back door so to speak.

If you want to see what Samsungs Roadmap for new products and features looks like - you can find it at Apple.com.

Sammy announced late last month they are purchasing LoopPay - and they will rebrand it - wait for it - wait for it - Samsung Pay - yes so original.

But it gets better - at Mobile World Congress when Sammy introduced the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge - which is where they said these devices would support Samsung Pay - how are they supporting - well via a finger print scanner you touch to scan - and that is on devices that are now metal and glass - and rounded - with out removable batteries or additional memory slots and with speakers at the bottom.

The S6 is a total rip off of the iPhone 6 and 6+ - it is simply amazing.

Thanks to Larry D for this next one.  Which is a new Android malware where it makes it look like the your Android device - wait - lets rephrase that - it makes it look like the Android device is off - but it is actually spying on the user.

So when a user hits the power off button it does not actually turn off said device - it just makes it look like it is off.

Seems most of the 10,000 devices they have seen infected are in China.

Essentially the phone can take pictures and make calls when the user thinks it is off.  Kind of like a teenager you thought was asleep.

In any case - another fun one for Android users.

    Hi Rob

On the next show, can you please tell the listeners to avoid www.iphonetrace.com like the plague. Apple and my carrier have both advised it is not possible to track an iPhone via it's IMEI number, so this company's claim that they can do this, simply doesn't make sense. Companies like this, pray on people's desperation, so the more people that can be warned about them, the better.

    Regards

    Steve in Brisbane

    Hi Rob,

My wife is looking for an app to have video chats with her three girlfriends at the same time on her iPhone 6. Will Google Hangouts do this on an iOS device, or has Apple disabled this capability on their devices as not to compete with FaceTime?

    Regards,

    Charles H.

Hi Rob, this is Fred from Raleigh.  I thought I had a brilliant idea using my iPhone 6, but in the end, it didn’t work.  Can you help?

When I go to the gym, I use Nautilus-type equipment, but I can’t remember all my individual settings.  So I created a one-page entry using the Notes app, recording all the settings.  As I go from one piece of equipment to the next, I need to reach into my pocket, pull out the phone, press the Home button to wake the phone, hold my thumb just right on the Home button to open it, read the table of entries, press the Lock button, and put the phone back.

I thought I could make this process faster by taking a photo of the Notes entry (using Home+Lock) and making it the lock screen image.  That way I wouldn’t have to use my thumbprint to unlock the phone nor press the lock button when I put it back, saving some time.  However, this approach falls apart because I like to listen to podcast music while exercising, and the music player takes over the screen in locked mode!  Thus my question is:  how do I defeat the music player control screen while listening to music so I can see whatever background image I have set up.  If there is a solution, it may be more trouble than it’s worth, but I would like to know anyway.  Thanks.

Last episode we mentioned the Pebble Time on Kickstarter and since that episode Pebble added Steel to the Pebble Time.  For $250 on Kickstarter you can order the Steel version of the Pebble Time for delivery in August - this vs the $299 it will retail for in the fall.  So if you are looking for a new smart watch - want a steel version and don’t have $599 for the Steel Apple Watch - there is the Pebble Steel.  I think the biggest plus of the Pebble watch is the battery life.  If notifications are you biggest driver in a smart watch - followed or tied with Battery life - it would be hard not to pick a Pebble time over the Apple Watch.  That said a whole heck of a lot more people will pick an Apple Watch when all is said and done.

Congrats to the folks behind the Smart Rope - they were funded - that means you will get to see me jumping rope as an extra to a future episode in the Tii App.  Then you will be able to decide if I am as good a jump roper as a I claimed.  Oh and they added a 4th size of the jump rope - XL for really tall backers.

And the folks behind the Buhel conductive headphones slash Smartglasses I mentioned I funded on the last episode - they announced a 100% delivery Guarantee.  Well that takes a lot of the fun out of Kickstarter.  After all I am still eagerly awaiting my SOS Charger and those other Conductive headphones - the sound band I orders years ago and I mean years ago as in 2013 for both.

    case-worlds-thinnest-car-mount

Rob, Just saw this project this week and thought it was  interesting. I use something similar to MagBak made by ProClip. You place a thin magnetic "stick on" plate on the back of your phone case and they have custom mounts that stick on to your car/truck dash. You can get these super strong magnet holders that attach to the mounts and they really hold your phone well. I have actually just started using one of these to hold my iPad Air 2 on the dash and it works fine either though that is not the recommended application for it. As good as ProClip is this MagBak looks interesting and I may try it. Enjoy. Don from Guntersville, AL

Thanks Don for the heads up on MagBak Case spelled M A G B A K  and is at kickstarter dot com.  This one had a goal of 15k and is over triple that now.  And it has until April 17th at 4:04 AM CT for you to back it.

They describe it as - quote MagBak is a minimalist Protective case and mounting solution for your iPhone - perfect to mount in the car and anywhere else. unquote

Pricing for this is $39 to start.

Again search for M A G B A K at kickstarter dot com or in the show notes for ep 340.

    pay-finds-frauds-reporting

There have been some really bad articles of late talking about Apple Pay and there being some security flaws with it.  BS - as in Bad sources - because these articles really in most cases are making crap up or point the blame on Apple where they have no control - i.e. identity theft at the credit card level - i.e. someone signing up for a credit card that issued by a bank.

Anyway - The very excellent Daniel Eran Dilger does a great job digging into some of those along the way that have tried to put down Apple pay by basically either making stuff up or re-reporting or mis-reporting what others made up or were wrong about.  The article is long - as most of Daniels are - because he takes a lot of time to research them.  Look for the link titled Apple Pay find frauds reporting in the show notes for ep 340.

It is a very good read - but will get you mad when you read it and realize how biased and bad some of the reporting is out there against Apple.

My wife and I are working our way slowly through House of Cards - the latest season.  And in one of the episode President underwood is playing an iPad game called Monument Valley - he even mentions it and reads a review of the game.  I have not played it yet - but if there are any Monument Valley players out there - please call in with your review of the game.

Really curious as to what some of you think of the game before I give it a try.

Also would love to talk to them about how their app was featured in an episode of House of Cards.

    VOICEMAIL - Quest_339_siri_strange_response

I asked why some of you did jailbreak or still jailbreak - here are some of the responses.

    Hey Rob,

When my phone was Jailbroken my favorite tweak was Activator. Having custom gestures to post to Facebook and Twitter was great since they were taken out of the notification center in iOS7. Another great tweak I used was CCSettings. It allowed you to Swipe up the control center and had most of the settings right there. It made it so much easier to turn on hotspot and to change any of the button settings.

Sadly I lost my jailbreak when I downloaded Sound Hound from the Apple App Store, of all places. It sent my phone into a constant springboard reset so I had to restore it. At the time, Apple was still signing for iOS 8.1.2 but I was not able to restore to it. Here's hoping TAiG or Pangu or Evasion comes out with a jailbreak for iOS 8.2.

    Regards,

    Alex from CT

    Hi Rob,

Why I jailbreak? Simple - Customization

    Regards,

    Sheketa

    Hi Rob,

Great question since many of the reasons why we used to JB have now been incorporated into iOS.

    Why I still JB:

    1. Theming - I just don’t like all those visually contrasting / conflicting colors and icons. Theming allows me to make my iPhone look just the way I want. In my case, black and white with 0bscure 7

    2. Some tweaks I just can’t live without - Infinidock (as many icons as you want on the dock)

    3. Virtual Home 8 - truly making the maximum use of the touch features of the home button.sensor.

    4. Volume Amplifier - helps my 70 year old ears listen to AC/DC just the way I like it - LOUD.

    5. HideMe8 - makes all the apps I don’t want prying eyes to see on my screens go away- very important if you live in a politically repressive country

    6. Bloard- makes my keyboard nice and black - looks great with my theme.

    7. Auxo 8 - just a fun way to deal with multitasking.

I don’t tweak the way I used to when I first began jailbreaking with my iPhone 3G. Now loving my iPhone 6 Plus.

I do not upgrade iOS until there is a JB.

Jailbreaking has become very easy over the years so iPhone users should not be so reluctant to give it a try.

BTW, I took a bricked jailbroken iPhone 4 to the Apple Store and had it replaced with no more than, "I see your phone is jailbroken but that’s not the problem" - no BS about voided warranty, etc. Just saying.

Keep up the great work Rob and thank you for supporting the JB community on your show.

    Regards to all,

    Rob in Thailand

My iPhone 6 plus is jailbroken on 8.1.2. I am planning on getting a 42 mm Sport edition watch, but looks like you need 8.2 for it to work (adding and controlling apps). Not really looking forward to giving up my jailbreak. Hmmm unquote

Yup - if you want the Apple Watch - you have to go to 8.2 and that means no Jailbreak for you or me for that matter.
