In this segment of how wrong were we have the following quote quote “Why the iPad will be synonymous with failure.

I’m the type of personal who can rationalize just about any technology purchase. I’m the guy in line to buy the new gadget the day it goes on sale. There is no way to rationalize purchasing an iPad in its current form. The device makes zero sense. It reminds me of the Macbook Air, a device for people who have more money than brains. unquote.

    Alex Valentine, /dev/null, 28 January 2010

Obviously he proved with that statement who it was lacking brains - but ironically it seems people talking about the Apple watch leading up to the launch took his words and replaced iPad with Apple watch more that a couple of times. For Promo codes - On Ep 344 we offered up chances to win promo codes for THE APP - Split the Check - three words - That is an app specifically for the Apple Watch. We will be giving those out early this week - for more info on this app go back and listen to the beginning of Ep 344.

For Promo Codes This week we have promo codes for the App  Personal Tip Calculator three words,  Here is the written review from the dev:

Hello, my name is Donovan, and I’m the developer of Merces - Personal Tip Calculator. I’ve built Merces to be fast whenever you need it, saving you from spending unnecessary time on your phone. With the Quick venue, you can set the tip rate you use most to appear immediately at launch. (And if you’re indecisive, you can also set two additional ones that will be just a tap away). You can even save your local sales tax rate and Merces will automatically calculate the sales tax based on your subtotal. Oh, and did I mention Merces has Apple Watch support? Your venue-specific tip rates, sales tax rate, and regular settings will all sync between Apple Watch and iPhone. You can even theme both the Apple Watch and iPhone apps. It’s only $0.99, but I’m giving away 10 promo codes! Good luck.

Thanks Donovan for your written review of your App - Personal Tip Calculator and for sending in the promo codes to give away.  Folks if you would like a chance for a promo code for this app - send an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com and put  PERSONAL in the subject line.  We will be giving those away later next week.

A QUICK REMINDER if you are an App developer or an iBook Author email me if you want your app or iBook featured in the promo give away segment We Just need the 5 promo codes or more to give away. simply email me at today in ios @ gmail.com and please include a 60 sec or less audio review of your app or iBook - indicating you are the dev or author.  Also when you send in the promo codes - please make sure to let me know when they expire.

    Reports-Record-Second-Quarter-Results.html

Apple had their Quarterly Conference call - They call it their March Quarter or Q2. I call it their Q1 2015 quarter to keep down or increase confusion depending on who you are.  But last quarter Jan to March - Apple reported Record Revenue of $58 Billion for that quarter vs 45.6 Billion in the year ago quarter.  Total Cash is now up to $193.5 Billion up 15.6 Billion for the Quarter.  During the Quarter they generated 19.1 Billion in cash flow and returned >9.6 Billion via Dividends and share buy backs.   They reported $13.6 Billion in Profits for the quarter.  In after hours trading Apple was up almost $2 to a record high of over $134 dollars a share.  Will be interesting to see where that goes in regular trading this week.

Before we get to how Apple got to these record numbers.

Lets first look at how the Anal-ists predicted sales and numbers for last quarter.  First up is the biggie - the iPhone and the Anal-ists predicted an average of 56.8 Million units sold with a high of 64 Mil from Faizal Kara of the Braeburn Group and a low of 50 Mil from Walter Piecyk of BTIG.  And the actual number was - 61.2 Million iPhones sold last quarter. The closest to the hole was Rober Paul Leitao from the Braeburn Group with a prediction of 61 Million.

ASP’s for the iPhone last quarter were $659 that is up from $596 in the year ago quarter.

Overall - the iPhone Sales numbers and ASP’s were a solid home run for Apple.

Per The iPads sales - well first lets look at the predictions.  The Anal-ists had an average estimate of 14.1 Million units sold - with a few predicting 12 Million on the low side and Alexis Cabot predicting 16.35 Mil on the high side - and the actual number was 12.6 Million well below the average - Closest to the hole was Kirk Burgess from the Braeburn group with a guess of 12.5 Mil units.

If you look at the post I put up at Today in iOS for the Quarterly call - you will see a chart I highlighted - it is also in the bonus section for this episode in the Tii App for the PDF bonus in the last slide.  This slide to me is very telling - it is the cumulative trailing 4 quarter sales for the iPhone and iPad back to initial launches - starting at Q4.  There had been a time when Apple was touting the iPad sales were above that of the iPhone - but now when you look at the trends in that chart you can see clearly why the iPhone is such a big big part of Apples financials.  The iPad sales essentially stopped growing about two years ago and are now actually showing a decline - while the iPhone sales continue to keep on keeping on and get better each quarter.  I think this plays back to the much longer life cycle of the iPad - my kids still use their 5 year old iPads every day I let them.

Anyway make sure if you have the Tii App to look at the charts in the PDF in the bonus items for this episode - there is also charts for quarterly sales back to launch for both the iPhone and iPad.

Per the Conference call - other interesting tid-bits - Apple Sold 4.6 Mil Macs last quarter up from 4.1 Mil in the year ago quarter.

Apple is upping their capital return plan to $200 Billion dollars - most of that in stock buy back - but they are upping their Dividend from $0.47 per share to $0.52 per share.  The next pay out will be May 14th for those holding Apple stock on May 11th.

Best buy will start supporting Apple Pay in their stores later this year.

Per the Apple Watch nothing was said or even hinted at for actual numbers.  Per which at least one Analist on the call was concerned about Tim not using enough overly optimistic terms when talking about sales to ask if all was ok.

Tim said he could not be happier with sales - that Demand was Greater than supply - but that they were able to get more supply then initially thought and have been pulling in ship dates for many.  More on that later in the show.

Tim said By Late June Apple should be in a position to add more countries to where the Apple Watch will be on sale.

And right now there are over 3,500 Apps for the Apple Watch.

One last note from Tim was about there only being about 20% of the installed iPhone user base on the iPhone 6 or 6+ - which he said means there is a lot of room yet for iPhone Sales.

Overall the news was very positive or at least the important iPhone news was.  And as I mentioned earlier in after hours trades Apple Stock price was up.  Which does not happen after most quarterly calls.

    Hi Rob,

I just received my Apple Watch with Milanese loop band. I asked the UPS driver if he was delivering a lot of these packages. He said, “A lottttt of them. It seems like every other house.” This is in the New Jersey Shore area.

    Regards,

    James

So Did I get my Apple Watch? was I one of the every other houses? - Well For those with the Tii App you may have seen the Push notice about my unboxing video - which is only available in the Tii App.  It gives you a nice look at what the Apple Watch Sport Box and packaging looks like.  So Yes - Yes I did get my Apple Watch.  And here is what I have learned / experienced with My Apple Watch the last few days.

First up the issue of Battery Life - WAY WAY WAY over blown leading up to this launch.  I made sure on Saturday Morning I had it fully charged.  I then waited until it went down to 10% of a charge.  That was Sunday at 7:30 PM - I went 32 hours+ from Full charge to 10% - in that time I had 4 hours and 9 minutes of usage.  I was doing a whole bunch with it - phone calls - shooting pics and watching Video from my camera on the iPhone - checking twitter - checking emails - purchased items from Walgreens and more.

Per getting it from 10% to 100% charge - that took 2 hours and 5 minutes.  And then I left it on the charger another 1 hour plus - just to make sure again it was fully charged.  As of this recording - which is 26 hours since the last full charge I am at 27% charge and I had 3 Hours and 52 minutes of usage during that time.

Granted these battery life numbers pale in comparison to the Pebble - but they are not as bad as many in the tech press made it seem leading up to the launch.  Battery life is more than acceptable as even Jack Bauer could make it a whole season on a single charge.  But I would highly suggest you get a charging dock for your nightstand.

There is something else I should clear up from the last episode - the blue band really is not as ugly in person as it looked in the photos - the photos made it look like a much more neon blue.  It seems to be dialed back a little bit.  So I actually kind of like the look of it now.  But yes - I am still going to change the band as soon as I can - more on why in a bit.

Per the bands - Last episode I said it looks as if you get 1 1/2 bands - and if you saw the unboxing video that clearly is the case.  You get the main band with the clasp and then two bands with the adjustment holes.  a Small / Medium one and a L / XL one.  The L / XL one is what is on the Apple watch when you receive it.

Per the Apple Watch Sport band - that is without a doubt the most frustrating band to work with and get fastened - you saw in my video.  Will I be changing it out - HECK YEAH.  But not just because it is tough to get fastened - but also because of a reason some in the Tii Google+ community already know about - It is not as secure as you need.  Ken in the Google+ community reached into his pocket and that action undid the clasp and his watch fell to the tile floor and shattered - not cracked - shattered.  Not even two days old.  Ken - My Sympathies.  I did ask him if he had it clasped as apple recommends and he said yes - but he only had two holes left so not much of the band was tucked under like they suggest.  FYI - if you are using the sports band - YOU MUST TUCK the band under - You must do this - if you don’t it will fall off your wrist rather easily.  And may fall off even if you do.  If you were thinking the L / XL band was just a little too big - I would recommend using it vs the S / M band at the last hole - the more you can tuck under the better.

And really as soon as you can get away from that band the better.  So maybe the blue was not as bad looking as I thought - the band functionally is frustrating at best and dangerous at worst.

But outside of the Band - My Experience with it was very good for the most part.

Now somethings were not 100% intuitive - like setting up Apple Pay.  Which I already had set up on my iPhone 6+.  I figured I would pair the devices and not Apple Pay is paired as well - and well I figured wrong.  I actually had to go into the Apple Watch App on my iPhone and go to My Watch - and then select Passbook & Apple Pay - and then select Add Credit or Debit Card - and rescan in my Credit card.  There was some info I had to clean up and submit - and then it was live right away - no need to jump through the hoops like I did on the initial set up - again because I used a card already assigned to Apple Pay.  But you do need to rescan your card.

Also when using your Apple watch to pay - you need to launch the Passbook Apple Pay app - and then click on the side button twice to get it ready to pay.  It is not like with your iPhone where there is no prep work needed you just lay it on the scanner and put your thumb on the scanner and you are done.  With Apple Pay on the Apple watch you do need to launch that Passbook app and double tap on the side button.  Note the Side button is the one that is not the digital Crown just to make sure we are all on the same page.

Yes - I payed with my apple Watch - but chances are in the future most of my Apple payments as in 99% of them will be with my iPhone.  Obviously if you don’t have a 6 or 6+ - then there is no choice for you.  But for those with a 6 or 6+ - I think you will find the iPhone is just easier and quicker to pay with.  Note for obvious reasons you must have the passcode enabled on your apple watch if you want to use Apple Pay.  You only have to type in the passcode one time per wearing session.  But once you remove your Apple Watch - the next time you put it back on you must re-enter the passcode.  It is not as bad as on your iPhone where it is every time it is unlocked - it is just that first time after putting on your Apple watch.

Initially I did not have the passcode turned on - but when I went to add Apple Pay - It forced it - and I have not minded it.

If you want to customize the primary watch face - force touch on the time - you can then either switch watch faces or customize the primary one.  I set mine up with the battery percentage in the upper left - Temp Lower Left - Apple Stock in the lower middle - Date lower right - Time upper Right - and left the calendar item in the center.  For me at least that gives me the best snap shot I am looking for most of the time.

One thing I am trying to get used to vs the pebble - with the pebble - you shock your wrist to activate the light - to activate the watch face on the Apple watch you have to either tap it or raise your wrist towards your face.  And it does turn off the screen really quickly.

One issue I found in setting it up to get phone calls - they were not coming through this seems to be because I had the Wifi Calling featured turned on - once I turned it off - then I could get calls on my Apple Watch.  So if you have tmobile and now sprint and have wifi calling enabled - turn it off if you are having issues getting your calls to show up on your apple watch.  Also make sure in the settings for your Apple watch under sounds and haptic - turn off mute.

Now when my phone is in one room and it gets a call - I can hear that a call is coming in via my Apple Watch and answer that call on the Apple Watch itself.  Of course that is the bad news as well - Because you can’t answer it on your earbuds if your phone is in your pocket via the watch - like I can do via the pebble. This was a concern I mentioned on the last show and is one Apple really needs to fix in a future update,  Give me the choice - answer on phone / answer on Apple watch / ignore.  Those should be the three choices you see.

I should mention the box the Apple Watch Sport Comes in is quite a bit different than the one the Apple Watch comes in.  The Sport box is long like a bigger rectangular version of a toblerone bar.  When the UPS drive handed to me I actually asked if he anything else for me.  I did not think it was the Apple watch - as you can see in my video when I open it - I say oh it is the Apple Watch.  My Six year old made a pretty cool discovery - if you look at the case when it is empty with the side for the watch - it looks like a Light saber - so if you fill with water and freeze - you can make little lightsaber pops.  Sorry Regular Apple Watch and Apple Watch Edition folks - that is something you can’t do with you box.

I have the reminder left on to bug me - I me poke me when I have been sitting an hour.  The logic here is you need to get up and move around to help with your health - however I don’t think I am abiding by the spirit of this feature - each time it pings me to get up - I go and get a couple of cookies or candy or something else from the pantry - so yeah I may need to turn off that feature here pretty soon.

What I would like to do is put together a top tips PDF for the Tii App with regards to the Apple Watch.  Let me know what your favorite tips are.  It can be with regards to some 3rd party app or something native to the Apple Watch software.  Please email those to me todayinios at gmail dot com - and put Apple Watch tip in the title - and I will curate those items into a PDF for the Tii App.

TIP on using camera / baby Monitor / Check lights.

I had a couple people ask about seeing a big Red Explanation mark with apple.com/help/watch

If you see this you need to force restart your Apple watch - to do that press and hold both the side button and the digital crown for at least 10 seconds - until you see the Apple logo - so that is how your force restart your Apple watch if you get it stuck anywhere else as well.

Speaking of pressing both buttons - if you do that quickly - it takes a screen shot of your Apple Watch.

Hi Rob, hope all is well.

Woke to pre-order watch on April 10.  Ordered the 42mm Steel with black buckle.  No issue with order and was back asleep by 5 min after.

Was teased a bit by ordering an extra charger and it was delivered on 22nd…  Huge tease

Watched delivered on 24th.  I had read a few articles so knew my plan.  I read the material and user guide and I immediately, upon set up, really limited the apps and notifications (set up was super easy).  I wanted to add apps as I got comfortable with what it can do.  Worked great.  Took half day to get used to navigating.  I chose to disable the raise to activate feature.  Seemed to come on every time I raised arm or was driving (even when not looking at watch) and found tapping it when wanting to look at time was easy and saves on battery.

As for the actual watch, I think it, like most from Apple, is really well engineered.  Perfect size and very comfortable.

Disappointed in some early media reviews (think USAToday complained about pass-codes, etc)  Most reviews I read made it clear they didn't read guide!  Or they had expectations they'd not have to use the iPhone.  This is an add-on to the phone.  And worth mentioning, it is a indulgence.

Only complaint so far is software but I’m sure that will evolve (that’s what early adopters expect).  The Activity App doesn't allow posting to social media (from what I can tell) which helps when having accountability partners.  I’d hate to use 3rd party instead but may need to resort to that.  Maps and a few other apps too long time to load but that will improve over time.  Thats part of the journey of being first.

I look forward to your show highlighting new Apps and functionality of the watch.

Btw, I’m a dedicated Harry’s and Warby Parker customer…  huge fan of companies getting things right.

    Regards,

    Chris

    Hi Rob,

I HAPPEN TO LIKE THE BLUE BAND and my watch arrived Friday. Set-up was easy. I downloaded the free User Guide from IBooks, which is very helpful. Friday night I attended a Basic Watch class at the Apple Store. I'm feeling very comfortable with my watch.

    Regards,

    Janet

P.S. We just received our Casper mattress and used your promo code. We love it.

    Hey Rob.

I just got my watch about 9 hours ago. I got the 42mm aluminium with blue sport band. I was surprised to hear you thought the blue sport band was the ugliest as I thought it was best looking, at least among the sport bands. I think the pink is the worst one followed by the green. Of all the bands, the brown leather ones are definitely the ugliest in my opinion. I would have got the stainless with link bracelet but didn't want to spend $A1479! Even mine was $579. Anyway I'm glad I got my watch on launch day as it was originally 4-6 weeks.

One thing I have not done yet with my Apple Watch is shower with it or swim with it ok - well that is hopefully two things - but both involve lots of water and the apple watch - I have not done this because others have - and hey no reason to because other have and have the video to show.  Actually quite a few videos.  Seems so far every video I have seen where Apple Watch meets water - ends the same way - with the Apple watch still working.

Apple does not promise it will work if you take it swimming or scuba diving.  But for showers and the occasional fall in the pool you should be fine.  Again this is for the Apple Watch sport - which really is something you want a sport watch to be able to handle.

I have worked out with it on my exercycle today - and I am double my daily exercise goal - Yay.

    38:13

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrDjP7iK7H8

iFixit ripped one apart.  And really from what I could see from the results - No - it is not designed to be upgraded in the future - but it is easy to replace the screen if it is dropped and shattered - and it is easy to replace the battery.  The core processor - however it is not possible at all to replace.  So the Edition version is not going to be something you can update on your own.  But for that version - someone will figure out a way to upgrade it in the future - maybe.

The battery in the 38 mm version is a 205 mAh battery.  As hard as I looked - I have not found a tear down of the 42 MM version to find the size of the battery for it.  We just know it is bigger - how much - no idea - hopefully I will find an answer for this by the next episode.

    teardown-reveals-deactivated-blood-oxygen-sensors/

One thing that was revealed in the teardowns is that there is a deactivated Blood Oxygen sensor.  This was actually a rumor from the winter - where Apple had to strip out some features with the sensors as they could not get them to calibrate and read accurately.  Seems that rumor is true.  Maybe in the future Apple via an update will figure it out and we will get more functionality out of our Apple Watches.

Lynda is not technically sponsoring this episode - but There is a new course that came out last week - called - Code Clinic Swift with simon Allardice - if you are an iOS app dev or want to be - it is really worth checking out. Along with the other swift courses - but this one is nice in that they have a series of courses and they solve a similar problem using different languages - so if you already know one language - you can see how they do it in the language you are most familiar with and then go and see how they did it with Swift - I just thought that was a cool concept.

    Hi Rob

Luke had an issue with holding the menu button to put his Apple TV to sleep. My understanding is you need to be on the main screen and then hold down the play/pause button to put the device to sleep. Hopefully Luke can try this and see if he still has any problems putting the Apple TV to sleep.

    Hi again Rob.

Just thought I'd give you my thoughts on the rumored iPhone 7C. I had the iPhone 4 and then upgraded to the 5 after my 2 year contract expired. At that point I planned to get every new iPhone as it came out, and I got the 5S when that came out, but was very disappointed that there wasn't a top spec new iPhone available in the 4 inch size when the 6 and 6+ came out as I like the smaller screen so I can use it one handed. I decided to just keep the 5S and wait for the next model. I hope Apple brings out a 4 inch version of the 7 but why should it be a plastic backed lower spec one just because I want the smaller screen. They should have one in all three sizes with the latest specs.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came out was from KEN Lecomte who said the following

    Quote

The clasp on the sport watch is totally inadequate. I reached into my pants pocket to get my keys and the band caught on my belt on the way out and released the clasp and it hit the tile floor.

    Unquote

As I mentioned earlier I asked Ken if he had the extra part of the strap tucked under like Apple Recommends or was it out flapping in the wind.

He said quote The tab on the strap was tucked in but I was on the second hole from the end. That doesn't leave much to tuck.

    unquote

He also contacting An Apple Genius that said it would be $229 fix a $349 Apple Watch Sport.  If he had purchased Apple Care it would have been $49 for the 38 mm Apple Watch sport for AppleCare+ and then there would have been a $69 service fee.  For a total of $118.

SquareTrade by the way is also $59 for their 2 year plan for Apple Watch Sport and $75 per claim for a total of $134.  So yeah if you are looking for coverage - it seems this time around Apple Care Plus is the better value.

And since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Folks Go to today in iOS dot com slash community to join in.

With the cracked watchfaces we've seen here, I was prompted to order a Spigen Tough Armor case over on Amazon.  It should get to me before the watch does in June.  I may remove the screensaver film from the case.  I mainly want that ridge of rubber around the edge.

    unquote

Price for the Spigen Tough Armor Case is basically $25 with the shipping.  Looks to be in stock May 11th.  Estimated delivery dates of May 14th to 18th.

I will be looking for at least a screen protector for mine.

Thanks to Michael for the heads up on this next one.  Which is kind of interesting.  As you heard earlier - some listeners who were told May / June deliveries - have already received their devices.  And it looks like a few Apple stores now have some in stock for walk up ordering.  Originally it looked like it was going to be June before any Apple Stores had units for walk up orders.  Does this mean that Supply is greater than expected or demand is lower than expected.  I expect the bears to quickly jump on this story and start talking about lower sales than projected.

    app-update-pebble-policy

Every now and then there will come a story and I am just embarrassed for Apple and how they act.  And I kind of joke when I go over those stories it does not win me any friends in Cupertino - and yup this is one of those times.  Seems Apple rejected an App because it said it worked with the Pebble - and even sent an email saying that.

What is worse this rejection happened to an app that has supported the Pebble for 2 years.  So this was actually a rejection to an update.

Apple has since said - oh that was a mistake - a mistake they were called out or a mistake they did it?

Shame on you Apple - Shame on you.

I mean I can understand the no mention of Jailbreaking - but to reject an App because it supports a competitors smart watch.  Not acceptable - and I am glad you were called out on it.

Well anyway the app in question SeaNav US has now been approved and it does still have the mention of Pebble in there. It also supports the Apple Watch.  Which ironically seems to be why there was an update - so Yes - the App dev added Apple Watch support along with Pebble support it had for two years - and it is rejected for supporting Pebble - nice.

Again Apple is saying this is a mistake - and judging by the reaction of many - Yes - Yes it was a mistake.  As in a mistaken policy - that hopefully is now soundly dead.

    http://sonnydickson.com/2015/04/16/leaked-case-displays-ipad-pro-design/

Sonny Dickson - who in the past has been able to get leaked mechanicals for future Apple products is now showing off a Leaked case for what would likely be an iPad Pro.

This looks to support a screen size between 12.2 and 12.9 inches.  The potential for 12. inches matches up with past iPad Pro rumors - but those rumors also said an early spring or Feb launch - which obviously did not happen.

One difference with this case and the current iPad Air - is that there are extra speakers.  With stereo speakers - 4 in all - 2 along the top and 2 on the bottom - so you get stereo sound in any orientation.

It also looks from the photos there is an extra port on the side - either for docking in both landscape and portrait mode as had been rumored a long time ago for iPads - but now makes more sense for a pro version - or one of the ports could be a USB-C port.  I would put my money on two lightening ports over one lightening port and one USB-C port.

Something to remember for a future bingo card.

    what-it-says-is-planned-obsolescence-10203822.html

This next one was brought to my attention from Greg G - and it is one of those Tech Hit pieces on Apple looking for Link bait.  Ok - you win - bait taken.  Actually I really hate these articles - and this one is titled - Company breaks open Apple Watch to discover what it says is planned Obsolenscence.  The article goes on to basically says this is something Apple has been accused of for a number of Years.

Poppy Cock - BS - What the Frack.  And Are you kidding me.

Folks that is just plain bad journalism.  No one in the smartphone industry supports their devices with new updates longer than apple - no one.  And the other are not even close. Some Android Phones are released on day one not supporting the lastest version and not able to ever support it.  Talk about planned obsolescence.

Apple supports its devices with new updates longer than any of  its peers - period.  And yes I know this is something we covered in the past - too bad they did not know it.

Basically what this article is saying is because you can’t change out the processor it is planned to be obsolete.  Just like you know the Tesla Model S sold last year is obsolete at $125k - because it does not have the hardware sensors that the P85 has.  I mean every technical product ever will be obsolete some time - Apple however does a better job supporting their devices longer than others - and for this article from the independent to say otherwise is just plain bad journalism - but then this is not the first time the independent released a bad article about Apple.

    Hi Rob,

Just listened to your latest episode, and can’t wait for the next one.

For the guy whose faceTime favorites had disappeared, I believe this has happened since iOs 7; while your reasoning about the new contact mode in the app switcher is probably right, the Favorites just got merged with the Favorites in the Phone app. Before iOS 7, the Phone favorites could only hold phone calls; now they can use phone, FaceTime Audio, or FaceTime Video calls.

In regards to the Apple watch, I want one, but really want to see it first before I shell out that much cash. I don’t want to order the stainless steel model—which is the one I’m eyeing now—and have it be too heavy for my small wrist when it arrives. Really annoying not living near an Apple Store; I’m hoping to see them right after graduation. And also secretly hoping for a graduation present, pssst. Since I’m doing a lot of traveling this summer, the dilemma for me is do I order one now or wait until I see it in mid-May? Am waiting for your next episode where people give impressions.

I’ve listened to your podcast since right before starting college, and it’s amazing to see how far we’ve come in such a short time. thanks for keeping me company.

    Hi Rob,

"It's just a waste of my time" (and Money)

I wear my 5S using Best Buys, Platinum belt clip/case.  I set my phone to vibrate, when a call comes in or test I pop off my phone as quick as looking at a watch.  (Also the Platinum has a "kick-stand" so I can watch videos, etc.). I am an ear bud guy so I can even answer calls without taking my phone off.  All this at a cost of $20.00! Go figure.

    Regards

    Doug

    Hey Rob,

Ordered my apple watch via the app on my iPad right at midnight.  I just got it today about 4pm local time.  I am just really excited because I leave for Japan tomorrow for 2 weeks! I'll let you know how well it gets me through the airport and traveling in Tokyo!  Thanks as always for the greatest podcast on the planet!

I went to NAB a couple of weeks ago - and really only had a brief chance to visit booths to see what is new.  But a couple of things that are iOS related that I did get to see - I made recordings of.  Both are mics.

The first one is the MKE 2 Digital mic that plugs right into the lightening port of your iOS device.

This is a clip on / lavelier mic - and it has a high Resolution signal converter from Apogee.

Here is a very very brief recording I made with it.

    PLAY RECORDING

Wish I had more time with this mic - I have requested they send a press sample - no word back yet.

    1:04:41

    http://www.shure.com/americas/stories/motiv-digital-microphones

The other mic I played with and thought did a great job is the MV88 mic from Shure.  This one is $149 and will be out this summer.  It plugs right into the lightening port and there is an app from Shure that allows you to change the dynamics.  There is a point in this recording where I mention tapping on the side of the mic - YES I am actually tapping at that point - and you can’t hear it - that is amazing.  Let me play that recording now:

PLAY RECORDING OF SURE MV88 Mic

Again that is $149 and will be out early this summer I am told.

I definitely need to get me one of those.

So those were my two best finds for iOS at NAB.  Both mics I think work great and I hope to get them in the future to do more testing with.

Thanks to all that sent in this next one which is for the how wrong are they segment - And well this one is an instant classic / winner.

We have this quote - quote  After months of hype, the Apple fans did not come out for the Apple Watch launch Friday. In contrast to long lines for iPhone debuts, only a handful of people showed up to see the watch in New York City, Friday morning.

unquote from Katie Roof - April 10th 2015 Fox Business.

And this is from a post titled - Crowds didn’t show for Apple Watch.

Hmmmm - Could that be because Apple said don’t show up - order on line - and only on line.  Yeah because all those that normally show up to wait in line - they are far more educated then miss Roof - who wrote this article with out the slightest idea on what was going on.  But hey it is fox news - so what were we really expecting anyways.  Just Sayin

For Promo Codes This week we have promo codes for the App  Split the Check three words,  Here is the EMAIL from the dev -

    Hi Rob,

Long time listener to the podcast, occasional emailer, and poster on the TII Google+ groups, and now…

    “Hobbiest” developer!

Not ready to give up my day job, but I’ve written my very first app and it is an Apple Watch app.  Here’s a brief “review”:

“Split The Check” is a new take on a classic app designed to be a really fast and easy to use Tip Check Splitter And Tip Calculator.  I focused on the Apple Watch experience by building a single screen and using a simple input slider; no fumbling around to try and input numerical digits on the small touchscreen. With an all-in-one screen, you can easily set the approximate check cost, the desired tip percentage, the number of people dining and instantly see the calculated results for the check total and each person’s share.  The default value of “1” for number of diners allows Split The Check to do “double duty” as just a quick tip calculator too!

I think the app design is in keeping with the philosophy for Apple Watch apps to be 5 or 10 second experience rather than duplicating an existing iPhone app with multi-screen/complex user interface.

I know there are lots of calculator/tip/check sharing apps, and some are updated for the Apple Watch, but I built this as something I wanted to use myself and potentially other people will find useful also.

    Regards,

    Robert S

Thanks Robert for being the first one to send in a promo code for an Apple Watch App.  Folks if you would like a promo code for this app - send an email with Split in the subject line and in the email include which Apple Watch you purchased. Of course send that email to today in iOS at gmail dot com

Also when you send in the promo codes - please make sure to let me know when they expire.

    seeds-first-ios-8-4-beta-to-developers/

On the last episode we talked about iOS 8.3 being released out of Beta - and this episode we get to talk about iOS 8.4 beta 1 being released to Devs.

One of the biggest changes is Audio books are moved out of the Music app and put into an updated iBooks App.  Guess that makes sense.  Of course that means the iBooks app now has its own audio player fresh with some special gestures for swiping forward and back.  iBooks now has a section for Audio books - so you can see just your audio books or just your text iBooks.

There is now an AudioBooks App in the iOS CarPlay interface.

The Music app didn’t just give the boot to Audio books - it also received a major overhaul looks wise.  iTunes radio in the app is improved making it easier to discover music.  Now Playing’s new design showcases the album artwork in a more dramatic fashion and you can start streaming to Airplay without leaving now playing.

This is a First Beta - and Apple does note that not all features in the new Music app are working - such as Siri control.

All in All most feel this revamp was done to pave the way to Apple releasing its own Streaming subscription music service - as has been widely rumored.   Of course those that are saying it is paving the way also are the ones that have long rumored about said streaming music service. Guess we will know more about said streaming music service on June 8th.

Why June 8th you ask - well as expected in Mid April Apple announced WWDC 2015 - And this time it will be June 8th to 12th - again as expected.

Apple had this to say quote Apple’s renowned developer community will come together at WWDC to learn about the future of iOS and OS X.

WWDC features more than 100 technical sessions, over 1,000 Apple engineers, hands-on labs, and the Apple Design Awards.

Developers can apply for tickets to attend WWDC and millions worldwide will be able to watch sessions streamed live.

WWDC Scholarships are available to students and members of participating STEM organizations around the world.

    unquote

And well if you were a dev and you did not register to get tickets - sorry

Registration was only open until April 17th - and you should have been notified

by Monday April 20th if you were randomly selected.

If you are one of the lucky devs that found the golden ticket - please report back from the event on how it is going.  Mr Sneed - I am talking too - you.

For the rest of us not going - There is the WWDC App of course where select sessions will be streamed live along with the keynote on the 8th.

They say sessions are scheduled for the full 5 days including Friday Afternoon - so if you are going plan on making a full week of it.

And of course Congrats to all that were able to get their WWDC tickets.

Well looks like by Monday the 20th - Some lucky customers were starting to see charges appearing on their credit cards and the status of their order changing to the next state.  This is good news as it does look like some users will be getting their Apples watches on or very close to April 24th.

    VOICEMAIL - FDBK_Apple_watch_order1

Per My order - Mine changed to Preparing for Shipment early on the 21st - and over 36 hours later it is still stuck at Preparing for Shipment.  I mean this is a small 3 x 5 x 5 or there abouts box we are talking about one sealed in China before shipping in bulk - I just wonder how much time they need for preparing said small box for Shipment.  Hopefully mine changes to Shipped by the time I get up in the morning.

    Hi Rob,

Which model of the Apple watch are you buying?

Are you going to be purchasing it on your Mac tomorrow morning or via the Apple Store on your phone or iPad? What would be the fastest?

    Regards,

    Robin

Well Robin - I ordered the Apple Watch Sport silver with Blue strap - Why that one - well my Wife asked me the same question - And I said I thought it was the ugliest band - and the one most likely not to sell out first.  And given I plan to swap out the strap regardless - It made sense to try for that one - and it worked out well - at least according to my Ship date window.

Per the fastest way for pre-orders - the last couple of times it was the iOS Apple Store App that came on line first - but best to be sitting there with both a laptop and the app and constantly refresh both - that is what I did and this time again it was the iOS Apple Store App that was available first.

    Hi Rob,

I just ordered my apply watch through the apple store app - the website (at least on my laptop) is still stuck in the “updating website” screen! :) WHOO! Apple Watch!

    Regards

    Robin

And seems Robin figures out what I was going to say before I said it.  Here is some more feedback from the Apple Watch ordering experiences.

    Hey rob,

This is Jeff from cincinatti Ohio. It's 3:06 am just ordered my space gray aluminum apple watch from the iPhone apple app.

Just received an email from apple saying I should have it delivered between 4/24 to 5/8

FYI - I went to the Apple site on my Mac, and the Apple watch sport addition shipping time is now 4 to 6 weeks out.

Just by placing my order 5 minutes sooner saved me almost a month in getting it!!!!

    Regards,

    Jeff

Hi Rob, long time listener first time.....contact..er

I set my alarm and got up at 2:50am Easter and got my laptop and iPhone ready. I had re downloaded the Apple Store app the previous day just in case.

Kept watching the "we will be back" screen as I kept hitting refresh on my MBP till about 3 minutes past three. I frantically switched to the Apple Store app on my phone, quickly made my selection (which I should have saved as a favorite) and hit checkout. In checkout, the app kept saying that I was "missing information" even though the field it highlighted was filled in and correct. After 2 attempts to get past that screen, I finally deleted the info in the field (it was an optional field) and pressed continues only for it to actually accept and finish out the process.

The experience was not bad and I have heard of much worse situations in previous pre-order dates. Even though I placed my order within 7 minutes of "launch" (I got my confirmation email at 3:07am) I still ended up in the mid/late May delivery window. I hold hope that it comes early though :-)

BTW, this was my first time EVER ordering anything on launch/preorder date.

    Best regards,

    Sam F

    Hi Rob --

    Are they kidding?

I ordered the sports watch with a space gray band the second the store opened and my delivery date is May 13-27?  What, did they have one watch available for April 24th?  And they can't narrow it down any better than two weeks?

Very disappointed with Apple on his one.

    Clearly the watches aren't ready.

BYW, buying it with the Apple Store app using Apple Pay was fast and easy - especially compared to when I bought my 6+  in the middle of the night last fall.  I wonder if this means the service is much better or if the watch demand is much lower?

Enough questions, I'm going back to sleep now. Dreams of having an Apple Watch will have to wait a month.

    Regards,

    -- Marc from Boston

    Hi Rob,

I was able to order one of each Watch size, 38mm and 42mm, with the white sports band at 12:05AM west coast time. However because I had to order one at a time, I ordered my wife's first and that one is expected between 4/24 - 5/8, mine won't ship till 5/13 - 5/27!

I ordered via the Apple App using ApplePay. The Apple website was actually not up until after I had finished both orders.

    Hope you got yours.

    Regards,

    Hey Rob,

So much for the April 24th ship date. I don't know if it's because my order went in at 3:10am on the the first preorder day, but the ship status on my order says 4-6 weeks to be delivered between 5/13-5/27. I order the 42mm Apple Watch sport in space gray with the black band. What gives? I wonder if everyone experienced the same or I got on 10 minutes too late to order it. I'm just hoping its Apple over quoting and it will ship on the 24th. That's just me being overly optimistic maybe.

Btw- thanks for the heads up on the Click kickstarter campaign. I'm a kickstarter rookie and they were the first campaign that I ever backed. Looks like a good product and because I got in when I did, there's a reward of a free band coming my way.

Thanks again rob for all that you do.

    Regards,

    Dan in PA

    Hi Rob,

Using my iPad and the Apple Store app I was able to get into the store at 3:02 AM. I ordered the Apple Watch 42mm Stainless Steel with Black Leather Loop in less than a minute. I also purchased the $69.00 AppleCare+ for Apple Watch. My confirmation email indicated that the watch is available to ship in 4-6 weeks, with delivery between May 13 to 27th. I'm guessing that only the Sport model will be available on April 24th.

I also purchased the 12" MacBook (256GB Gold), and it is available to ship in 1-3 business days with delivery between April 20 and 22nd. I also purchased the $79.00 USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter, the $79.00 USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter, and the $19.00 USB-C to USB Adapter.

The Apple Store worked perfectly, and I was back in bed by 3:15 AM.

About 7:00 AM I thought I might like to try on an Apple Watch at the nearest store to verify I made the correct choice and try other bands, and when I tried to get a try-on appointment there were no appointments left on the day I could get there. They only offered appointments through April the 16th (one week at a time?). The appointments are broken up into blocks of time - early morning, morning, afternoon, and evening - with 15 minutes for each appointment. The store in Charleston, SC doesn't offer the Apple Watch Edition.

All in all the purchasing experience was flawless, and allowed me to get my much needed sleep.

Thanks for your show, which I have been listening to since the first episode!

    Regards,

    Ed T

    Hi Rob,

My experience purchasing the Apple Watch.

It was very disappointing for me. At midnight on the west coast, I was online and waiting. The rebuilding screen had been displayed since I logged on at 11:30. Midnight rolled around. I updated my screen. Nothing! I kept at it for about 15 minutes. At about 12:15 a.m., I finally had access to the store. In 2 minutes I had ordered a 42mm, Sport Apple Watch in space grey with a black band. The delivery date? June! So disappointing. I ordered as soon as their system would allow and I have to wait until June?! Glad I ordered but disappointed the the dismal supply. Apple, we expect better.

    Hi Rob,

I went to my local Apple Store and tried on the apple watch and I must say very impressed with the so called rubber band. Very comfortable compared to my Fitbit flex. Also tried the loop band it did pull my arm hairs a bit so overall looks like I will be ordering the sport watch with the regular band. The service in the Apple Store was awesome. Visited the Apple Store in Mishawaka, Indiana. Just thought I would add my two cents worth. Love the show listen every week. Have a good one.

    Hi Rob,

As you asked, I am sending a description of my tryout experience:

    Duration: 15mins

Experience: I had already bought my apple watch when the preorder started. So I really wanna to go to make sure I made the right choice.

I asked a gentleman that was hanging by the special watch tables to whom I need to talk about my appointment, nicely enough he introduced me to a nice Apple associated that asked my name and proceeded to show me some of the options I had favored on my Apple Store app.

The feeling: there is no amount of picture or videos they will ever make justice to how beautiful this piece of jewelry really is. The 38 mm it's definitely smaller that what it looks in picture. It may be a little hard on the eyesight for some people; however the 42 mm may be too big for some wrist  even though it's easier to manipulate the software with. My simple suggestion: you got to try this yourself.

One thing is for sure: coming from someone that has use watches his entire life I have never try something so light. I definitely mean this on good way.

The screen resolution it's absolutely fantastic. Even on the 38 mm I can see and read things very well.

The digital crown it's definitely mind boggling: you turn it thinking that something mechanic is going to happen (maybe some resistance of sorts) but you realized in seconds that the whole things works very smoothly.

The bands not only complements the watch well but are very light and comfortable to use. Even the Milanese loop one(note: I have harry arms and I had no problem with it).

You probably heard a lot about the complications, they are as cool as you see in videos and others. In fact: did you know that there is a very useful complication for the battery level? It caught me by surprise! I didn't see that anywhere in apples website.

    Other interesting details:

    - The Apple associate explain that all notifications will be filtered directly to the watch. You don't have to worry about notifications "buzzing" in multiple devices.

    - They seem to be running low on black sport bands (at least at my store they did. Not sure if other experience the same).

The apple associate was very helpful and told me that the feedback have been phenomenal. Not only people are trying, but there is a lot of people going to the store to play with it. I didn't get too much hands on with it for the same reason; some people wouldn't it let go the tryout stations.

Overall: I am happy with my purchase and the experience. Here is to hopping that my 38mm stainless steel apple watch gets here soon... After trying then on me, I had to tell the associated to take them off or I will be force to steal one from the store. Lol.

I have had very little interest in the  Watch. Today I was in the mall where the Apple Store is located so I thought I'd drop in while the wife was shopping.

I was surprised that I was allowed the 15 minute treatment almost right away. All I can say is WOW! I was blown out of the water. That thing is amazing.

So folks when you get your Apple Watches this week - call into the show  206-666-6364 - that’s 206-moon-dog - or email in your initial thoughts with your Apple watch - both with regards to setting it up and then the use of it.   The Good - the Bad - the not so pretty.  Whatever it is you want to share.

Oh at the end of today’s episode stick around after the song for more listener feedback on Apple Watch ordering and try-ons.

Thanks to Dr. John for this next one - which is an article at MacRumors titled - Apple Watch Accessibility Features - VoiceOver, Mono Audio, Grayscale, Taptic Engine and More -  whew - nice short title there.

Actually that article really is just pulling info from Apples own site where they highlighted the Accessibility features in the Apple watch.

First up is Voiceover which uses the speaker on the Apple Watch to tell you everything that is happening on the screen and help those visually impaired navigate the Apple Watch.  Voiceover is compatible with the Builtin Apps and available in 14 languages.

There is also Font Adjustment so you can make the text go from under 40 years old size to over 40 years old size.  You can also choose to bold text.

With zoom you can do up to 15 times zoom.

There is Grayscale for those that are color blind or those really big fans of 50 shades of Gray.

There is an Extra Large Watch Face

And more Accessibility settings for Reducing Transparency, Reduce Motion, Mono Audio and the Taptic Engine.

The Taptic Engine gives you haptic feedback to your touches - and also vibrates as you get a new notification.  So we will go from feeling ghost vibrations in our pocket to feeling ghost vibrations on our wrist - brilliant.

Actually I have the vibrations now for my Pebble for notifications - and it is definitely a great feature - but again one you can get with a much cheaper pebble.

This next article is from Cnet and is title 11 Surprises I learned about the Apple Watch.  This from someone at CNET that had the apple watch for 10 days before writing the article.

I will not go over all 11 or even most - just the one that jumped out at me

Quote - You can't use your watch to start and stop calls on your iPhone

Wait, can this be true? It is, weirdly: you can make and answer calls on the Apple Watch, and then hand them off to your iPhone to continue the call there...but, you can't wear headphones connected to your phone, stick your phone in your pocket and use your watch to dial. I hope an update changes that.

    unquote

Well Yeah - I really really hope an update fixes that.  As that is one of my favorite features on my pebble - driving in the car with my headphones in - and seeing a call come in on my pebble - and hitting the answer button and being able to talk on my headphones.  If Apple Watch can’t do that - it will be at the top of my Bad column when reviewing.

I will comment more on his 11 items after I get my wrist under my own Apple Watch.

MacRumors points out some interesting feedback about the Apple Watch that has not been mentioned fully by Apple.

Quote And here’s a surprising feature that Apple hasn’t said anything about previously: When the watch is in a known Wi-Fi hotspot, the watch can perform the most essential online functions even when your phone is completely dead, turned off, or absent. It can query Siri, for example, send and receive texts, and send/receive drawings and tap patterns to other watch owners. That’s impressive.  unquote

Again the Apple Watch can do those things when your iPhone is now where near or turned off.

    Hi Rob,

Regarding cody's question about being able to play audio books on a different Apple ID, if it is an audio book downloaded from the Apple Store, he should be able to take his moms Apple ID and add it to family sharing to his new Apple ID.

This should allow him to download songs, videos, books, apps, etc.

    Hello Rob, long-time listener, first-time e-mailer :-)

Dave from New Jersey was experiencing an issue with deleting multiple, but not all, messages from a sender in the Messages app.  I have experienced that same problem and it does appear to be a bug in 8.2.  Rebooting the phone fixes this problem.  I have upgraded to 8.3 and have not experienced this issue yet, but we will have to wait and see if it can be declared fixed.

    Hope this helps!

    Regards,

Hi Rob - Just a quick note about the guy having issues with mail not sending. I think I’ve seen this… When it happened to me somehow the “From” picker was displayed at the bottom and iOS was waiting for input for which account to send from. Of course, I can’t get that to happen right now on iOS 8.2, so maybe it was an iOS 8.1 thing.

You asked about Calendar apps on one of the shows, I haven’t heard anyone mention Fantastical from Flexibits. I say the couple of different display modes alone make it worth buying. But then there’s a great text parsing engine that translates words into the right fields. If you do get it read the “Tips and Tricks” document for more use ideas.

What a waste of time the In store Apple Try-on appointment was.

First, you don't actually get to do anything with the watch you wear. it's in a demo video loop mode. So no launching of apps no touching and getting haptic feedback based on your touch no heart rate monitoring. Nothing!  They have a second watch setup that you do not wear and it lets you interact with the watch. But there was not much I could do as it wasn't paired with an iPhone so i could try any of the apps, just Siri. :-/

The watch? It feels great. the demo mode lets you feel the haptic feedback, it's also great.

    Will I buy one? Nope.

I know I said best to wait and try one at the store if you were still on the fence - but really from Fancisco’s comments and others that “Tried” one at the Apple Store - it seems you are more seeing it how it looks and feels on your wrist than really test driving one.  It will be the feedback from Friends and those you know and trust that will be the real push to get people off the fence - the question is which way will they be pushed off said fence.  The Tii Google+ Community will be interesting watch these next few weeks as more and more of us get our watches and report in there or on the show. Lots of feedback is coming soon to community near you.

One question that came up in the last two weeks was from Kent Kersey who asked quote:

Is there a way to get different color flags on the iPhone mail app?

    unquote

And the Answer would be NOPE - Just orange - and if you have an email that syncs to your computer - if you flag it a different color - or regardless of the color - it shows as flagged at Orange on your iOS device.

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/rogerkay/2015/04/13/apple-watch-wager/

So how many Apple Watches will Apple sell for the first year - well lots of Analysts have lots of thoughts on that.  Trip Chowdhry is on the high side with 41 Million for his guess.  Uncle always wrong Gene Munster has a guess of 8 million units on the low side.  The average of 18 notable or infamous Apple Analysts puts the number at 22.47 Million for the first years sales of Apple watches.  Obviously we can’t say who the winner is until at least April 24th 2016.

I do love those headlines - like this - Only 6% of Americans plan to buy an Apple Watch.  -  ONLY 6% - as if 6% of 350 Million is somehow a small number.  It actually would be most of the way to the average guess of 22.47 Million - and that was a Global number - not US only number.

Like I said we can’t talk about who is wrong on that yearly number yet - but what we can talk now is the current estimates on what Apple has done already.

Right after the first weekend of pre-orders a company called slice that offers a service that users sign up for to manage purchases and receipts - they scanned through users emails to get an estimate of those that received email receipts of their Apple Watch purchases.  And yeah if that sounds creepy - it is.  But what Slice found was that about 1 Million people pre-ordered an Apple Watch in the US on Friday.  With an average of 1.3 watches per order and an average of $503.83 per watch.  71% went with the 42 MM version versus 29% for the 38 MM version.  CREEPY - what Slice also found was after releasing this report the number of cancelations to their service skyrocketed.

Others are getting in on the Apple Watch pre-order numbers game.  Ming-Chi Kuo estimates the global Pre-orders of over 2.3 Million units.  He also estimated that the break down was 85% for the lower cost Sport version,  15% for the second tiered Stainless steel version and less than 1% for the massively overpriced Edition version.

Now you may wonder how Kou came to his conclusion of 2.3 Million pre-orders - well it is all about the formula.  I asked him to explain a little bit and here is the recording Kuo sent back.

So there - thanks Kou for making that all crystal clear.

Here is the thing - we may never really know what initial orders were.  The Apple Watch is lumber in the other category with Apple TV’s and accessories and other stuff.  So Apple does not need to report the numbers.  In the past Apple typically only reported numbers they did not have to when said numbers blew every analysts numbers out of the water.  It is possible Tim on Monday will talk about specific numbers for the Apple Watch - which I am sure someone will ask - but most likely the response is that is a different quarters numbers and they are not breaking out those numbers - if that is the response - then the initial sales were likely less than 2.3 Million the first weekend or week.

Keep in mind that about 2 Million Pebbles and Android Wear devices combined have been sold.  So unless Apple is comfortable about that number - don’t expect any specifics.

    apple-watch-band-swapping-sites-arent-going-to-work/

Thanks to Dr. John for this next one - which is from Techcrunch and titled - PSA: Sorry those Apple watch Band swapping sites aren’t going to work like you thought.

Seems a couple of Apple Watch band trading sites recently opened up reportedly offering the ability to swap out the included extra watchband with someone else for a small fee.  Problem is you don’t get two full watch band sets - you get the main band and two bands on the other side one for small and the other for M / XL wrists.

OR put another way - you don’t get 4 halfs- but rather 3 half.

It seems some of those band swapping sites make it sound like you get 2 full sets of bands - and you can trade one set that is the wrong size for another of a different color that is the right size - but again - that is not the case or band as the case may be.

In other words wait to you get your Apple Watch and you will see what you get and what is extra and then we can talk about this in greater detail.

Or just look for someone in the Tii Google+ community that has a different wrist size you want to swap with.

Eventually I think the Bandswapping sites will be of more interest as we start buying more and more 3rd party bands and then want to swap them for something new once we tire of them - but for now - these sites seems a little premature.

Thanks to Dr. John again for this next one.

Which is a story about how Apple was offering up some devs a chance to get an Apple Watch early to help expedite their development efforts.  Seems they reached out to a certain percentage of devs and almost randomly.  And guess which watch they are offering to devs for early delivery - as in next week delivery - Yup the Apple Sport - Silver with blue band.  the One I ordered because I thought it was the ugliest and least likely to sell out first.  Nailed it.

Thanks to Michael for this next one - which is that Retail Apple Watches still feature a hidden diagnostic port where they band connects.

There is some speculation that said diagnostic port may not be there on the units shipping this week to consumers - but it was still there on review units.

If it is there - expect to hear more about its possible capabilities via tear downs at iFixit and other sites this weekend.

thanks to Dr. John for this next one.  Which is an article talking about Apple TV - and they are speculating that June 8th at WWDC the next gen Apple TV will be released.

Ok well the article was really about Apple offering a lower fee to Netflix and hulu for signups via Apple tv - but the good part or interesting part to me was the mention that a new Apple TV was coming at WWDC and only one of the tricks up Apples Sleeves for that event.

WWDC should be very interesting this year.

Thanks to Dr. john for this next one.  Which is about more Apple TV speculation - but I think their reasoning is wrong.  If you look at the image for WWDC 2015 some are speculating the center image is the same outline as the Apple TV.  Except well that WWDC 2013 also used that same image in the center of its logo.  But you know other than that - yeah I think they are on to something or not.

Yes - I do think it is very likely for a new Apple TV - especially if there is an Apple TV app store announced - but you can find that same comment from me the last 3 years at least.  I just don’t think the logo is revealing anything.  It is just the same image from 2013 logo with more stuff around it.

    http://www.iospolice.com/apple-buys-israeli-

    camera-company-linx-imaging-for-2-million/

This next one is one of the better stories I saw this past two weeks - with regards to the Apple Rumor Mill.  Seems Apple purchased an Israeli Company by the name of LinX Imaging for a rounding error of 20 Million dollars.

LinX makes Multi lens cameras for electronic devices and their two main claims to fame is very small profile - at around half that of other camera - with quality of that of a high end SLR camera.

Either one would be something to get excited about for a future iPhone camera - both combined - Now we talking upgrade time.  This in theory would get rid of the protruding camera on the 6 and 6 plus and at the same time greatly improve the image quality.  The LinX website also claims they can capture not just 2D images but also 3D images - yeah - whatever - just give me the lower profile / SLR quality photos - and that is enough for me.

As is typical Apple is not saying why they purchased them or their plans for said purchase - but between you and me - I am guessing it was for their camera technology - I mean if you don’t mind me going out on a limb on this one.

Is it possible this tech will be in their next iPhone in 5 Months - yes just 5 months - Probably not - but maybe they were working with them for a while and purchased them once they realized they were going to use them.  So while not probable this will be in the next iPhone - it is possible.  More on this I am hoping later this year.

    wireless/apple-s-iphone-7-rumors-really-are-the-best-yet.html

Ok - so lets look a little at some rumors about the next iPhone.

First is that the “S” designation may be killed off this time around and Apple will go right to iPhone 7 and 7+ and 7 Air.

There is the Force touch rumor

There is a rumor on Apple finally using Liquid Metal for the case.

And the case will be blasted with zirconia bead  for a stunning finish

There is the rumor now about the Advanced camera module being used from LinX tech - Well John Gruber was saying this camera would be the biggest jump yet in camera tech - so people are trying to connect the dots on that back to LinX.

The Processor will of course be upgraded and with the upgrade to iOS 9 - we may see performance that rivals the new MacBook.

There would also be 2GB of ram in the next iPhone.

With all these improvements and more - this is why Apple is jumping to the iPhone 7 name.  And again there are rumors there will be 3 versions - iPhone 7 and 7 Plus matching in size the 6 and 6Plus - plus a 7 Air or 7C - matching in size the 5 and 5 - and also maybe being plastic like the 5C.

Thanks to Dr John for this next one or not - as the news is that Google will be discontinuing support for the Youtube app in older iOS devices.

So if you have a device that uses the old native Youtube app - you might be SOL shortly - actually if the article was to be believed as soon as April 20th.

And I happened to look at my kids original iPad tonight and ut ohh - well at first there were no search results - not even for Cats - and nothing in the Featured, Top Rated and Most viewed categories.  But after an hours or trying to connect it finally got through but now in the upper left the first search result or item displayed is a message from Google that basically says goodbye or soon to be goodbye - as of right now it is kind of still working - but it is not working well - and looks to soon be sunset.

Looks like I have a couple of little hearts to break this weekend - Thanks Google.  All my 6 year old wants to use the iPad original for is Netflix and Youtube - the later for Minecraft and Traria videos.  Is that so much for a 6 year old to ask for.  Well I guess so.  Thanks Google.  Thanks a bunch.

In the you could have seen this one coming category. Comes news that two roommates in Tulas OK - One an Apple Accolyte and the other an Google Fan boy - got into a tiff over which mobile OS is better and then well some Alchol was involved as was some sharp pointy things and they wound up stabbing each other.  Actually the pointy things were broken beer bottles.  You would think the iOS guy could at least have some money for a real knife.  The Broken Bottle that however fits perfectly for the Android Fan Boy.

Both were treated for the minor injuries - because well they were geeks and it was broken bottles - it was not like they were going to do any real damage.

No Charges have been filed as of yet - seems the Cops were Windows Phone 8 guys and just wanted the two to go away.

    VOICEMAIL - JOHN_FDBK_IOS83_UPDATE

    Hi Rob,

Per the first iOS 8.3 bug I found

When you scroll down from a text notification to do a quick reply, it doesn't bring up the keyboard! Wow, I never thought I'd use that feature and now that I can't I've realized how much I actually did use it!

    Regards,

    Jason H

    Hi Rob,

After updating to iOS 8.3, both my pull-down Notifications and pull-up Settings menus periodically stop responding. I discovered a fix that works for my set-up, although it is only temporary.

If I go to Accessibility and toggle Zoom off & back on, they work again.

(Note; I'm only referring to their display - I still have trouble with some Notifications never appearing; but that started before this 8.3 update.)

    Regards,

    Steven in Santa Ana, CA

    Dear Rob,

iOS 8.3 is still a win, but I think it needs a bug fix. Among a number of other much smaller bugs, my iPhone 6 plus actually crashed for the first time ever. Maybe Apple will release an iOS 8.3.1.

    Sincerely, Joe

    Hi, Rob.

Just wanted to let you know about a few bugs I found on iOS 8.3 for iPhone 5s:

    1. Last week I answered an incoming phone call and then add another call to merge both in a conference call.

However, once the new call was answered, the user interface did not show me the relevant buttons, including the Merge button.

Usually I get the six buttons (Mute, Keypad, Speaker, Add Call, FaceTime, Contacts), but this time none of them appeared... just the red hangup button at the bottom of the screen.

I had to hangup both calls, reboot the iPhone and then call each party again independently to properly merge the calls in a new conference call.
    2. Just today I had another conference call: I phoned one party and merged the call with another party and then let them talk on Speaker while having my Mute button active (I just had no intervention in their conversation). So, at this point both parties where talking on Speaker (on) while I'm Muted (on).

When they finished talking the second party hanged up; I then turned the Speaker button off and tried to turn off the Mute button as well, unsuccessfully (just didn't turn off!)... I had to turn the Speaker on again in order to turn off the Mute button (weird!) and only then I could finally continue talking to the first party.
    3. Since iOS 6 and iOS 7 I reported a bug in the stock Calendar app: I'm not able to see the calendar for 1921 (it's completely missing), 1920 (it has no January) and previous years (1919 and before all appear wrecked). I event sent a link back in April 2014 with screenshots showing this behavior
    4. (https://plus.google.com/photos/106132141704841421347/
    5. albums/6006049579211315473).

I also sent a bug report to Apple about this (they never answered back), but the bug is still present in all versions of iOS 8 for iPhone, iPod Touch (5th gen) and iPads... I'm not a time traveler (wish I were), but it's weird that Apple doesn't take the time to amend this bug.

Bugs 1 and 2 are new to iOS 8: I make conference calls quite frequently since 2012 and this is the first time I see them, just after upgrading to iOS 8.3

Thanks, Rob, and keep up the good work!

    Regards,

      - Fabio

    Rob:

I thought you might want to know about this. It's another reason to take your advice and wait before updating. As you might know, many pilots use IOS devices to enhance situational awareness while flying. IOS 8.3 disables many of the external GPS receivers pilots use:

As there is a compatibility issue with iOS 8.3 and external GPS receivers.

It's not clear when this issue will be resolved.

    regards,

    Brian S

    Reading, PA

Rob, I use to be able to hold the menu button down to get my AppleTV to go to sleep at night. However since the recent update this no longer works. I've gone through the setting but don't see anything regarding this function. Are you seeing the same?

    Luke

    Good Morning Rob,

I updated my phone today and it removed one of my favorite apps "Record Their Stories".  So I have a couple questions.

    1.  Why would Apple remove an app when I update my phone?  If it were no longer on the app store, it should not be removed from my phone?

    2.  What happened to the app?

I hope you are able to garner some inside information.

    Regards,

    Kevin S

Hi Kevin - all I can say is that it was removed from the iTunes App store - it could be because they did not re-up their dev license or because there was a bug and they pulled it down.  Or it could be because there was something malicious with the App - and that would be the only reason Apple would kill it on your iOS device - which Apple can do to any iOS app on your device.

There is another reason it could have disappeared - if you have a lot of apps - as in all your home screens are full - and it was just pushed off the screen - if you swipe down from the middle of the screen and search for the app - that will let you know if it is truly gone or just pushed off the home screens. If anyone knows anything about this particular app and why it is not longer in the app store - call or email us your feedback.

    Hey rob,

Just finish listened to your last episode of the show. During your kick starter section.. You mention the bullet wallet was only available for iPhone 6! Yes it is and it do end by May of 2015.... But the iPhone 6 plus model was funded back on November of 2014.. They reach their goal and they promise a feb 2015 ship date. I funded it and they haven't ship yet. They said it ran into manufacturing issues. According to their schedule, it will start shipping the iPhone 6 plus model in end of May. Which sucks cause that means less time with case since I'm always buying every model of iPhone. So my plan was to keep my iPhone 6 plus for 2 years so at least I will have the case for a year and half. Anyway, the case looks like best wallet case so far on the market. It does looks wonderful and very useful. Just wish all these kick starter project will expedite their products. Thanks for reading my email. Love the show!

    11-port-usb-c-dock-for-apple-macbook

Thanks to all that sent in this next one.

And it is a Kickstarter project called the HydraDock which is an 11 port USB-C dock for Apple MacBook - so for all of us asking where the ports all went - well it seems the answer is they went to HydraDock.

This project had a goal of 35k and is now over 56k and it has until May 15th at 9:37 PM CT for you to get one of these on order.

Here are the ports you get

    1 - 3.5 MM stereo headphone port

    1 - Gigabit Ethernet Port

    1 - SD card slot

1 Mini Display Port up to 2,560 x 1,440 resolution - i.e. sorry 30” display no soup for you. I did check on that with the developers of this and they confirmed the 30” cinema display is not supported - wannnnt wannnt waaaa

    1 HDMI port

    4 - USB 3 ports

    2 - USB - C ports

And that is your 11 ports.

Pricing for this is $129 and they have 829 of 1000 left at that price.  Delivery starts in June.

I did ask the folks that make this if it would work with the 30 inch cinema display which is 2560 x 1600 - and they said it would not - because that is a dual-link DVI connector and the MacBook is only set to go to 2,560 x 1440 resolution for a monitor.  I talked to Adam Christianson at the MacCast on this - and he said we would need to wait and see if there is a special box released just for supporting the 30” cinema display - but these solution would likely not be cheap.  So if you have a 30” cinema display and were looking at running your MacBook on it - you may want to hold off upgrading right now.  I hopefully will have more news on this later on.

    And this is the NuDock - one word - spelled - N U D O C K

Well the full name is the NuDock Apple Watch and iPhone docking station.

There is a lamp for this - as well as an extra portable battery.

Pricing for this is $149 - delivery is expected in July.

This allows you each night to charge up your iPhone, your Apple watch and an extra portable battery - each in their dock location - and there is a nice overhead lamp with dimmer - so you can see everything at night.

It is very nice looking - and makes a lot of sense for those of you that travel most of the day locally and find your phone running down all of the time.

This project has until May 5th for you to fund - and it is at $318k raised so far towards a goal of just 30k.  So this one is over 10x its funding goal - that seems to be a winner.

    Search for N U D O C K at indie go go dot com

    1:08:53

    http://www.wipowerband.com

in the Doooo - why did I not think of it category comes the WiPowerBand strap - it is a $99 or $89 dollar strap for your Apple watch that also has batteries in in the strap. So that is a great way to extend the life of your Apple Watch battery - This I predict will be selling like hot cakes at a sumo wrestlers convention.

It gives an extra 250 mAh of battery - which if rumors are true is an extra 62.5% of battery life - as the Apple Watch 42 mm version is rumored to have a 400 mAh battery - guess we will know more once iFixiT rips one apart.

Not all news is Apple Watch news today - there is some Apple Pay news as well - well if you happen to live where Hockey rules that is. Seems Canada will be getting Apple Pay this fall - according to the Wall Street Journal.

Apple is supposedly in negotiation with Canada’s six biggest Banks about a potential November launch.  The 6 biggest banks account for more than 90% of Retail charges.  So if they can get those 6 ducks in a row - it will be a nice start in Canada.

At this point the WSJ said there is some push back on Apples fee proposal - as in that they want a fee and Banks for some reason like keeping as much money as possible.  But hey if the US banks could come around - expect the Canadian Banks to do so as well - it just takes one of the 6 to blink and sign on - to get the other 5 fall in line for fear of loosing customers to the Apple ecosystem.  I predict many trips to Strip joints in the future for some certain Canadian bankers - just sayin.

    http://www.cnet.com/how-to/unlock-the-secret-spock-emoji-in-ios-8-3/

Thanks to Matt for this next one - which  is an iOS 8.3 secret - as in unlocking a secret Spock Emoji if you have iOS 8.3

This is a Vulcan salute emoji - and it is not technically on the device - but you can add it easy enough.  To add it - with iOS 8.3 - in the Twitter app search for the following.#tii #spock

    Then copy that tweet

then go to Settings on your iPhone -  select General - then Keyboards - then Shortcuts.

Tap the + icon - then double tap in Phrase - and paste in what you copied and remove everything but the Vulcan emoji.

Then for short cut - you will want to enter llap - which is for well if I have to tell you you are not doing this any way.  Then tap save.

Then in the future when you want that emoji - just type L L A P

Note the icon will only be visible to those iOS users running 8.3 or later.

You can also find the tweet by going to @podcast411 - and look for my tweet from April 22nd or 23rd.  It is the one right before I tweet about episode 344.

In this segment of how wrong were they I thought we would go back in time prior to the last new Apple Product - the iPad for some quotes - and we have the following quote quote ““The company once notorious for its ability to upend convention and revolutionize markets may no longer have what it takes, worry some technology journalists. Call it the iPad or the iPlod, but the message seems clear: Apple may have lost its mojo. unquote

Ok under the best laid plans of mice and men category - comes the beginning of this episode.  Next week I am going to be at NAB / NMX in Las Vegas - so no show next week.  I planned for this Episode to be out Wednesday night - so that you would have the latest news for ordering an Apple Watch Thursday Night / Friday morning depending on where you live.  I had the show notes mostly done - planned on getting to my recording right around 9:00 PM and with some luck be down by Midnight and in bed a little there after.  Yeah - it is already well past midnight.   See Apple went and threw a big ol monkey wrench into everything by going and releasing iOS 8.3 Gold Master to the public - Huh - where did that come from.

So then I figured I needed to do the update tonight and read up on it and well you know throw all my initial plans out the window.  But I guess better on Wednesday then Thursday.

YES I broke my own first rule about waiting - because I just could not wait until the next episode which will not be for about two weeks.  All I have to say is I hope this did not break my wireless hot spot feature.

I updated my iPhone 6+ to start - I followed my instructions in my PDF.  Which I changed the publish date to Wednesday so you can find it easier in the Tii App. Thanks Max for that suggestion.

So now it has a publish date of April 8th to match when the latest version of iOS was updated.  Look for it in the episode list for PDF - now at the top of that list.

Ok - back to the update procedure - I did do the update via iTunes on my computer - I downloaded it to the computer first and then did the update after the backup’s and syncs.  I also updated my Wife’s iPad Mini - because you know with me going out of Town - nothing says dog house like updating my wifes iPad right before I leave.  Hopefully the update fixes an issue she has had with poor Wifi connections.

We have talked before on the show about the new features of iOS 8.3 - but here is a quick summary of those changes from iOS 8.2.

Lots of updates to the emoji’s  and the emoji lists scrolls horizontally making it easy to scan through for that perfect emoji - like an Octopus Emoji - because I can’t count the number of times I wish I had an Octopus emoji.  Whew - glad I did the update.

Other Changes in 8.3 include Wireless CarPlay, support for Google Two-Factor Authentication, Apple Pay support for China UnionPay Network, For us iPhone 6+ users in landscape mode there is now bold / underline / italics key.  For you know underlining Pet in a message - How do you like my new pet - when you add in the emoji of the Octopus.  Perviously that key was just a bold key.

In the Portrait mode - for the keyboard in Safari - the Space bar is now bigger and the Period and go keys smaller.  So less accidental periods and go tapping.

Some other key improvements and bug fixes

•iCloud Photo Library has been optimized to work with the new Photos app on OS X 10.10.3 and is now out of beta

•Includes support for Baum VarioUltra 20 and VarioUltra 40 braille displays

    Wi-Fi and Bluetooth fixes

    Orientation and rotation fixes

•Which Fixes an issue where device orientation appeared upside down after pulling the iPhone 6 Plus from your pocket - Praise the maker.

    There are Messages fixes

    Family Sharing fixes

    CarPlay fixes

    Enterprise fixes

    Accessibility fixes

In short this is a major update - a dot X update. and not a double dot X update.  Even if it is right on the heels of the 8.2 update.

It seems with the public betas being available Apple has more feedback and data to fix issues in Betas quicker - so old time lines for updates are now meaningless.

So What are some saying about this update: Into the email bag we go.

    Hi Rob,

I promised to give feedback on the iOS 8.3 update.

The update went without a hitch.

Apps that caused problems before are working fine.

Finally Dutch Siri. Siri is not so complete here as in America, but that is mainly due to integration with third party information providers like cinemas, restaurants, public transport and others. Siri is working good for me. English Siri was ok, but especially with names it was difficult. Now those problems have disappeared and that makes Siri much more usable.

Enjoying my iPhone 6 more now.

    Regards,

    Wilco O

    VOICEMAIL - Colby_iOS83_question_audiobooks

overall I am not finding the level of complaints or issues with this update we have seen in the past.  That could mean there are no real issues or that everyone is so gun shy of updating they held off this time or maybe a combo of the two.

I still recommend you don’t update until mid next week.  Wait and see what comes up.

For perspective I did the updates during the prime time for the iPhone 6+ it was almost 2 hours start to finish because of slow downloads and then a long update process as it was extracting.  And the iPad mini was even longer.  If you wait a bit - the update process should be faster.

If you are jailbroken or plan on jailbreaking definitely do NOT update.  It might be a while if ever for a jailbreak for 8.3

The 8.2 jailbreak never came to be.  So don’t be surprised if the 8.3 does not happen either.  Stay at 8.1.2 or earlier if you want to or need to jailbreak.

Finally - let me know your experience with the iOS 8.3 update - the good the bad - the ugly - call us as always at 206-666-6364 that’s 206-moon-dog or send an email with a recording or text to today in iOS at gmail dot com.

    ?xid=yahoo_fortune

Ok - lets get right to the Apple Watch on this episode or you know lets go to right away if you don’t count the iOS 8.3 update segment.   If you want to pre-order one - if you are 100% sure you want one - then at 12:01 AM PT on Friday the 10th - you will want to be awake and pre-ordering your Apple Watch.

If you are on the fence and were planning on going to your apple store to try one on first and then order one - know that there is a very very good chance your choice will be getting delivered well past the April 24th launch date.

Apples Retail Chief Angela Arendt is reported to have told Apple Store employees that quote the best way to get in line is online unquote.

So it comes down to this - if you are an early adopter and sure you want an Apple watch - 12:01 AM PT is when you need to order one.

If you are not sure then set up an appointment with your local Apple store to set up a time to try one on.  Just note by the time you do if you then decide to order one it will be likely May best case scenario before you see yours.

If you are on the fence and an early adopter type - well then it sucks to be you.  If you are on the fence and don’t care if it is May / June or later before you get one - then take your time and try one out and see if it is to your liking.

    16:54

    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2480358,00.asp

One thing it sounds like you will not be able to do on launch day - April 24th - is walk into an Apple Store with no reservation and walk out with an Apple Watch.

You need to pre-order on April 10th if you want an Apple Watch on launch day April 24th.

There is no option for waiting in line - not this time.

    17:15

    http://www.imore.com/heres-what-apple-watch-can-do-without-iphone

    Hi Rob

I am thinking of getting the Apple watch, but to help me be sure I should get one, I would like to know the advantages of it over the Pebble?

    Regards

    Steve

    Brisbane

Hi Steve - well first up there is a nice article at iMore which goes over what you can do with the Apple watch when you are not with your iPhone.  Obviously it can still tell time. It can play music and show your favorite photos.  Up to 2GB of Music and 75 MB of photos.

It can track fitness info - your heartbeat and step counts - stairs climbed and stand - sit ratio - which I hope we can delete that - as my stand - sit ratio well not so good - maybe even worse then the Android to iOS ratio for Malware.

You can also use Apple Pay and Passbook - even when away from your iPhone.

So there are some things you can do with your Apple watch with out the iPhone.

With the iPhone you can answer a phone call - even when your phone is in another room - but both are on the same wifi network.  Not something you can do with the pebble.

Getting up a good info graphic comparing the two is a good idea Steve - and something I should do.  Lets see if Should turns into did do by the next episode.

    http://watchaware.com/post/7726/yes-the-apple-watch-

    app-is-an-ad-so-what

Thanks to Michael for this next one which is a post titled - Yes the Apple Watch App is an Ad - So What - from Watchware dot com.

And Yes - So what - Right now it is an Ad - which also explains why iOS 8.2 released so much earlier than the Apple Watch launched - Apple wanted to get this Ad ware app on your device - and so what.  Well the What seems to be people are freakin out - like Apple just stuffed 10 kittens in a burlap sack and threw them into the river type freak out in some cases.

Here is the thing - no one is forcing you to click on it.  And eventually the app had to be installed - and it is not like you can delete other native apps. IE Newsstand.  But you can place this in a folder and be done with it - if your future plans have no room for an Apple Watch.

And even if you do accidentally tap on it - it is not like it starts autoplaying some videos - it actually opens up to the pairing screen.

Not the Explore screen - which is the Ad screen.

There is also a screen for the App store - if you click it Tells you you can pre-order on April 10th - so maybe you will be able to pre-order right from the App. In which case it is much more than an Ad right now - it would be an easy way for those that want to pre-order to do so - but likely that is not the case - and it is just for Apps for the Apple Watch.

As I look at this I see there are three camps of people - those definitely getting the Apple watch - for them this app may make life easier.  Those definitely not getting an Apple watch for them - placing this in the folder with newsstand is all you need to do. And then there are those on the fence - and for you - this app gives you some videos to check out and get a better feel of what the Apple watch is and how it can be used - OR you know you could just wait until April 10th and then try and get into an Apple store to try out one of the Apple watches.

Again some bloggers freaking out about nothing.  Hopefully you are lucky enough to have not seen or read any of the posts by those that did not like the Apple Watch App - but for those that did - sorry you can’t get those minutes of your life back.

Seems like those getting an Apple Watch with out Sport in its name - will be given some extra benefits from those of us that are getting the sport model.

Prior to purchasing - the higher end versions - said customers will be given the opportunity to video chat with an Apple Online store Rep.  The Rep will then try on different combinations for you showing you what it looks like in real life - well except for the part it is a virtual try on - and it is not you.

But the real benefits come after purchase where you get a virtual personal setup.  An Apple Watch Specialist will walk said customer through the unboxing, setup of the iPhone companion app, pairing to your iPhone as well as installing some apps from the App store.

And speaking of Apple Watch Apps - Thanks to Chris in London for the heads up on this next one.

Seems there will be over 1,000 Apple Watch Apps available on April 24th when the Apple Watch starts hitting peoples wrists.

But one thing is certain if you are still on the fence after all that - it is probably best to sit on your credit card for a bit - get to the local apple store - or wait to hear what I and others have to say once we who are not beholden to Apple get one and can do our reviews of the Apple Watch.

    Hi Rob,

since I cut the cord last year, I've relied on TV for the shows I want to watch on iTunes (movies and TV) like Downton Abbey. I also watch PBS, History Channel, YouTube, and MLBTV and today, I signed up for HBO Now.

Of course, there's the old standby, Netflix.

    Regards,

    Tony L

    Hey Rob,

Besides Netflix, I use ABC news almost every morning, and my wife and I watch a couple shows on FYI regularly. I also always use it for Apple events and occasionally for podcasts. I would use it for podcasts more but it does not sync well with my subscribed list from my iPhone. I wish there were an iTunes U channel.

    Regards,

    Ben

    Hi Rob,

We use Apple TV for iTunes purchased movies for grandkids, Netflix and watching Apple Events (when it works)

    Rich

    Hey Rob,

The channels on the Atv do seem to be growing each week and your recent comment about it seems to strike a chord with me. My wife and I of course watch Netflix but lately we are using the HBO Go app to catch up on Six Feet Under.  We also watch the Trailers app since it's great to see the previews on the big screen and in surround sound.

Other than that the others apps just sit there so I think it's time to start hiding them as you described in your recent episode.

    Regards,

    - Steve M. from Detroit

Hello Rob, I watch more than Netflix.

I also watch Hulu, HBO GO, FYi, Fox Now, FX, Vevo, YouTube and all my purchased movies in iTunes.

    Regards,

    Alexx

    Hi Rob,

In addition to netflix which we use 90% of the time, we watch both PBS stations and watch our Disney Movies Anywhere movies. We also occasionally borrow my parents cable subscription to watch ESPN ABC and Disney Junior on the Apple TV.  we of course also do a lot of air playing from our phones as well as watching vudu that way.

We really need an ultraviolet app!  it doesn't have to be vudu, which of course competes directly with Apple.   it can be apple's own ultraviolet app, or better yet have it integrated into iTunes like Disney movies anywhere. they really need to let bygones be by bygones on the ultraviolet thing.  That battle is already lost.  Disney is pretty much the only one giving us what we want, and they just had to go out on their own.

i am still impatiently waiting with you for Apple to get around to the Apple TV App Store.  you think they would've already learned with the iPhone what it means to them.

    Regards,

    Dave B

    Hi Rob,

As a cord cutter I utilize more than just Netflix on Apple TV

I use Watch ESPN and HBO GO as much as Netflix.   I also like the Watch ABC app.    These do require a cable provider log in (thanks mom for letting me borrow hers :) )

A quick note that Apple will be having their Investor Call for Q1 2015 on Monday April 27th.  Expect them to talk a little bit about apple Watch sales - even though it is a Q2 2015 launch.  I will either have an episode or blog post on the evening of the 27th - more about that on the next episode - which will be the week of the 20th.

    said-to-win-apple-a9-chip-orders-for-next-iphone

On the rumor front - There is the rumor once again that Samsung has won the order for the A9 Chips for the next iPhone.

The A8 Chips are currently being produced by TSMC  Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company.

The news of the A9 win for Sammy comes from sources in the know and sources asking not to be identified.  So grain of salt take with this report should we.

What the Apple order means to both parties is a lot - as in Apple Ordered almost $26 Billion worth of Chips last year - or roughly 7.6% of the entire chip industry.

So this is a customer that everyone wants including Apples Arch enemy Sammy.

But  I would say don’t count out TSMC - as they previously stated they would be investing $12 Billion for Plants and equipment improvements through 2015 and into 2016.  So maybe Sammy wins the A9 and TSMC wins the A10.

    http://www.buzzfeed.com/johnpaczkowski/new-apple-tv-

    will-not-support-4k-video-streaming

Seems some more rumors about the next Gen Apple TV - and this time the rumor is it will NOT - repeat - NOT support 4K Video Streaming.

This according to John Paczkowski now at Buzzfeed - whom is basing the lack of 4K video support via sources in positions to know.

Of course given the number of 4K TV’s or actually the lack of number of 4K TV’s out there - this is not likely to hurt 4th Gen Apple TV sales.  Also there is a general lack of 4K content.  What Netflix has is not much - and 4K video is a major bandwidth hog.

Now given how long we have been waiting for a new Apple TV - Just getting the previous rumored features - Siri Remote, A8 Processor and App Store are enough for me.  I just want the new Apple TV already.

In news under the did not see that coming - Not - Category or Hey here is another way that Sammy is copying Apple Category or people that plan to build glass houses should not throw stones category - and that with regards to Bend-duhhh-gate. Yes the Sammy Galaxy S6 bends - and with the exactly the same amount of pressure required to bend an iPhone 6+ and the S6 screen also shatters during that bend far easier than the 6+’s screen. So far no tweets from Sammy slamming their own product about bending.

If you don’t remember - back in September - Sammy released a tweet about their new GalaxyNoteEdge - with the words - Curved. Not Bent.

To which last week - I tweeted a reply to that tweet - Curved and Bent #GalaxyS6 - just sayin - no reply from Sammy to my tweet - Chickens.

    500-fake-fans-to-attend-Chinese-press-event-for-the-launch-

    of-its-new-flagship-phones_id67937

Thanks to Mike M and a few others for this next one.  Which is that Sammy Supposedly Paid a bunch of Fake Fan boys to show up at a Launch event in Shanghai.  Sammy supposedly paid about 500 people out of the roughly 1,000 that showed up for the event.  According to one of the people that was paid to recruit fans he said Sammy was looking for people under 30 who looked like students.  The Fake Fans were supposedly told to tell the Press they attended the event because they were Sammy fans or because they were interested in the new Sammy phones.  Yet half of the people at the event were taking pictures of the new devices with their iPhones.  If this sounds familiar - Sammy in the past has been accused of paying people to show up for launches of its products.

However this time Samsung is officially dismissing this report, saying that the whole story is quote totally groundless and bogus. unquote  Sammy said that all the attendees who they said numbered over 1,100,  were quote formally invited unquote to the Galaxy S6 launch event in Shanghai.

Here at Today in iOS we don’t like to just take these stories or responses at Face value so I spent the last couple of days digging into Samsungs claims that these attendees were quote formally invited unquote and I can say Yes - Yes - they were all formally invited - How do I know this well I was able to see one of the formal invitations for myself from someone that attended - Sadly this is an audio podcast so I can not show you the picture of the invitation but hey let me describe it to you - On the front of the invitation - which by the way has some very nice artwork and detail - anyway on the front of the invitation across the top it said - Federal Reserve Note - The Unites States of America.  There was a drawing of Andrew Jackson on the Front and in the four corners were the number 20.  I am guessing that represents the 20th person who was invited - smart of them to number the invitations.  So yup all looks like Sammy was on the up and up this time - I feel bad for doubting them.

    Rob,

Aren’t iOS devices supposed to only have 1 audio thing going on at once? My 5S has been having more than one at a time. I just had a call and in the background I could hear the Giants’ game I had on via MLB At Bat.

I also take my 5S when I walk or bike ride. I listen to podcasts, audio books etc… When I’m using Map My Walk, it announces mile/time points over and at the same time as whatever I was listening to… so those are 2 instances.

I seem to remember that the Apple design is for only a single audio output at a time. What is your recollection?

    Gary A - Boise, ID

Hi Gary - this is a bug that happens every so often where Audio from two apps is playing at once. Every now and then I will have the audio from some app playing in the background when I get a phone call - which is very annoying.

HOWEVER the except to that is Map apps with turn by turn - those are supposed to play over the audio you are hearing.

Will be interesting to see if 8.3 squashes this bug.

In Response to Jeremy who wanted to sync his iPhone between his iMac and MacBook.

This may not solve Jeremy's issue retroactively but will help in the future. You can set up your main music library on your laptop or on an external hard drive which both your MacBook and iMac can access that way they both source from the exact same library. For more detailed instructions on how to accomplish this you can look it up on YouTube.

    Hi Rob

Just finished the last Tii podcast and heard a listener talk about a jukebox for a room.  I have a suggestion.  Ion makes a jukebox that sits on a table that would work.  It pairs over Bluetooth so it works whether it's android or iOS or other device. Also it has a USB port in the back so you can plug in the device while its transmitting.  I use my iPad mini gen 1 in the ion jukebox it has a little clip stand to hold the device. Also I recommend the iOS app called BeatBlaster.  It has the look of the big boombox stereo and has a companion app to place on the iPhone to use as a remote.

I have a question. Is there a way to remove the Apple Watch app from my iPhone 6?  I have no plans to buy an Apple Watch because I have a Martian Notifier watch that pairs to my phone for  notifications via Bluetooth

    Hi Rob

To disable video auto-play on Facebook, you used to have to go into the settings app to do this. Now you have to go into the Facebook app itself to do this. Once you are in the app, go to Settings/Videos & Photos/Auto-Play and then tick never play videos automatically.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi Rob and all,

At present I'm using an app called Alarmed to notify me of reminders and appointments.

I use this because it has a feature that will keep sounding an alarm till it is cancelled by the user.

The calendar app and reminder app only give a single beep.

Does anyone know of a way to get the calendar to have a relentless tone without jail breaking?

Hi Steve not that I know of but if anyone does - please email or call in with how to get that back.

Hi Rob - This is a repeat question.  After several iPhone's I still have not found a way to mass send all incoming emails to trash without jail breaking.  You should be able to move them all as you can edit/delete all trash.  I thought this was going to be "fixed" with the iPhone 6 but it isn't unless I am missing something.  Although the there is no direct procedure on the ipad either, I found a 3 step sequence that usually works, but not on the iPhone.

For those looking to get HBO Now - well Now you can get the free trial anywhere in the world on Apple TV.  Which is perfect timing for the April 12th premier of Game of Thrones.

Actually if you have an Apple TV or iPhone or iPad - you can get the HBO Now app and get HBO free for 30 days.

Step 1 - Go to the HBO Now tile on Apple TV or download the HBO Now App on your iOS device.

Step 2 - launch the App from your device and tap or select Start your free trial with iTunes.

Step 3 - Confirm the purchase.  Not you are confirming to an Auto-renew at the end of the trial which means you will automatically be billed $14.99.

Step 4 - You will be required to create an HBO Now Account with a valid email address.  Once done tap on Register for HBO Now button at the bottom.

I will be doing this once I get back from Las Vegas - so I can get through the remainder of Season 4 of Game of Thrones and get caught up on Season 5.  Might even go back and re-watch the first 3 seasons with the wife.

But remember you are signing up to a zombie subscription when you do this - which means you will keep getting billed until you go and kill the billing.

Thanks again to lynda dot com for their support of Tii - and if you go to lynda dot com slash tii - that is l y n d a dot com slash t i i  - you will get a free 10 day trial to their 3,000 plus video tutorials. Thanks Lynda for sponsoring this show and for the free offer.

Per those in the NCAA pool - if you are looking at the rankings - Robert W - is me, Robert W 2 is my oldest son, and Robert W 3 is my youngest son.  That said - Congrats to Jordan Hopper who just killed everyone in the field with 331 points.  2nd place was Joes Baez who won it last year.  Jordan actually lost the last game with a pick of Wisconsin vs Jose who had Duke correctly picked - still Jordan had the right mix of upsets picked correctly to give him a very large margin of victory.  Jordan - I will be sending you an email shortly or already - depending on when you hear this.

And Before we go today I want to remind you to send in your feedback to the show - 206-666-6364 - that 206-moon-dog - or record your feedback and email it to the show at today in iOS at gmail dot com - The  feedback can be a question or comment per something someone said on this episode or it can be a question or rant you have about something else.  An App or product review - good or bad - as long as it is iOS related - it is welcomed.  I am always looking for new Artwork to feature that you created on an iOS device - just put some Tii branding on it and send it in.  And of course we are always looking for more music created on an iOS device to play on the show.  This is your show and your feedback is greatly desired.  And don't forget to check out our Moderated Google Plus community by going to todayinios dot com slash community.

AND I am down to just two songs in my queue - so if you have some music created on an iOS device - please please please send it in.

For those of you going to NAB and/or NMX - I will be at the event - Libsyn has a booth North hall - N7714 - which is in the NMX area.  I will also be speaking about podcasting on Monday afternoon.  So if you are going - please stop by the libsyn booth and say hi.  NAB / NMX is in Las Vegas April 13th to the 16th.  Hope to see you there.  Because of that show however the next episode will not be until the week of April 20th.

And finally there is the Tii App which is now Free to you.  Search for Tii in the iTunes App Store - it is the best way to consume the show and to get push notifications each time a new episode of Tii is released.  Please go right now and download the Tii App - Did I mention it is free.
