TRANSCRIPT FOR EPISODE 352
Welcome to the show I am your host Rob and this is the Today in iOS podcast - First up I want to thank STACY for sending in the music you hear in the background. STACY wrote:
Hi Rob,
I created this song called Blastoff Polycarbonate Man with the App Korg Gadget - and the track was "mastered" (using the term very loosely) within Audioshare using the inter-app audio apps AUFX:Peak EQ, AUFX:Push (generic:subtle preset).
This is from my Album Orbiting Moodswings where all the songs were created on iOS devices. You can find my music by searching for Spectral Sevenths two words in Spotify.

BLASTOFF POLYCARBONATE
Thanks STACY for the music and folks I will put the full song at the end of the episode. I also want to thank JEFF. for sending in the Artwork for today's show. JEFF said the following:
Hi Rob,
I took a photo on my iPhone 5s. The image was then altered first in Tangled FX to get a painted look in the water & then in the Brushstroke app to add stucco effect to the sky & adjust colors. The Gumby Boat usually sails on my bookshelf, I snapped a photo and sent it to the Sketch Club app to erase the background and drop it onto the water and add all text. Finishing touches and light effect done in the Pixelmator app.
Regards.
Jeff
Thanks JEFF, for sending in this artwork and folks you can see JEFF'S artwork in the FREE Tii App via the BONUS button for ep 352 - or at instagram.com/todayinios and also as a stand alone post in the VIP section and at Facebook.com/todayinios.
If you have some artwork and or music you have created on your iOS device that you would like to share with the audience please email it to me at today in iOS at gmail dot com and please make sure to include which app or apps you used to create said artwork and or music.

First up a correction on something I misspoke about on the last episode - Apple Music is $9.99 a Month - not $9.99 a year. and it is $14.99 a month for a family of 6 - and obviously not a yearly rate - Not sure what happened there. Thanks to Derek, Joseph, Jacobi, Kevin, William, and a few others that let me know the error of my ways.
Apple Music will be available on the 30th of June - with the update to iOS 8.4 - as always - don’t be the first one to update. Take your time - wait a week - you have been warned. And if you are someone that cannot wait - and has to update when it first comes out - make sure you follow the update procedures in the PDF for the Recommended update procedures - which you can find in the free Tii app - just go to the episode list and tap on PDF - and it is the PDF at the top of the list. If you follow those steps you likely will have less issues. Likely - being the key word in that sentence. Actually those procedures are recommended any time you update.
Another error in my last episode - Transit is not a stand alone app but just a view in the native Maps app.
Into the news - and there was a lot of posts about an iOS and OS X zero day security flaw that exposes your passwords or causes your first born to stollen their crib by a pack of wild dingos or allows neighbors to see you and your significant other in intimate relations - or so it seemed based on how it was spun in the Tech Press.
This is all based on a team of researchers and their white paper they released - and this quote from said white paper.
quote:
We completely cracked the keychain service – used to store passwords and other credentials for different Apple apps – and sandbox containers on OS X, and also identified new weaknesses within the inter-app communication mechanisms on OS X and iOS which can be used to steal confidential data from Evernote, Facebook and other high-profile apps.”
unquote
First lets get into some details about this - it requires Malware that you download and install on your iOS device. That means - it needs to be approved by Apple - and needs to be an App you wanted.
So unlike how it was spun by some - this is not something effecting most or really any users - this is just a theoretical issue.
And even if you installed the Malware - it does not get instant access to your keychain passwords as some made it out to be. However it can trick you into re-entering the passwords for another app it pairs up with to get that password or so it seems.

https://corner.squareup.com/2015/06/valet-beats-the-
ox-x-keychain-access-control-list-zero-day-vulnerability.html
Again as I don’t want my first born or your first born stollen by a pack of Dingos - and I definitely don’t want videos of me and my wife in the hands of Gawker right next to Hulk Hogans Videos - I took these reports serious and did some research on different posts. And lots were just Fan boys on one side sling mud at the other - but the one I found the best on this subject was from Square. Because well Security and Money and Passwords - and iOS - kinda are a big deal for them.
Or as they put it - if these assertions in the articles were correct the world was on fire - at least for them. The first thing they did was read the paper - and here is what they summarized about the issue Quote:
- Malicious app searches the Keychain for keys written by benign apps. The malicious app can see that the keys exist, but can’t read the associated secret values.
- Malicious app deletes the keys written by the benign apps.
- Malicious app then adds the keys back to the keychain without the values, and adds itself and the benign app to the keys’ Access Control List (ACL), allowing the malicious app to read whatever secrets the benign app later writes to those keys.
At this point, we could breathe a sigh of relief: Access Control Lists only exist on Mac OS X – not iOS – so despite the headlines, our applications were not vulnerable to an attack.
Unquote
Nor are other iOS apps - as iOS does not allow the level of access called out in the white paper. So at least per the Keychain vulnerability being reported - that does not affect iOS devices.
Per the other part of the claim - about inter-app communications - that one does seem to be a vulnerability for iOS - but not a new one - and one that has been reported on before at least a year before and then again this past February when it was all over the tech press as the Masque Attack II.
12:29
http://www.imore.com/depth-look-ios-os-x-xara-vulnerabilities
Of the articles I read - can you say 5 hour energy drinks - as in plural - there is a good in depth one from iMore titled - XARA deconstructed link in the show notes of course.
Again this white paper from the researchers with regards to iOS - comes down to one single vulnerability and it is one that was already known and talked about on this show before. It has to do with how URL’s can be used to call open an app. for example if you have the FB app on your iOS device - go to Safari and type in fb:// and hit go. What happens is it launches the Facebook app. The problem with this exploit is that fb:// is not unique to Facebook - any app could use that to launch it - and with iOS it will open the last app to say open me with that URL. So if you have installed a Malware app - and it tells iOS to use fb:// to open it - and you last opened the malware app - it will then be the one that launches instead of Facebook - and there is where they can get you - in a fishing scheme to get you to manually enter your Facebook credentials thinking you are logging into Facebook. And if you are on a website and it tries to launch an app and you are not sure if it is the real thing - you can double tap on the home button and see what app is really launched.
In the mean time - Apple says it is working on a fix for this issue - but it is not one has yet to have any real world examples of it actually having been implemented in a malicious attack - just ones by researchers. Just like back in February when we talked about this.
So no dingos and no peeping neighbors. But still an issue that existed before - and still is waiting for a good solution from Apple.

http://www.engadget.com/2015/06/15/lastpass-hacked/
Thanks to all that sent in this next one. Which is actually something iOS users need to be aware of - well at least all those using Password managers - and specifically LastPass.
If you were or are using the Password manager LastPass - then you might want to check the crib to see if any dingos have been around.
Here is the note from LastPass to their users:
Dear LastPass User,
We wanted to alert you that, recently, our team discovered and immediately blocked suspicious activity on our network. No encrypted user vault data was taken, however other data, including email addresses and password reminders, were compromised.
We are confident that the encryption algorithms we use will sufficiently protect our users. To further ensure your security, we are requiring verification by email when logging in from a new device or IP address, and will be prompting users to update their master passwords.
We apologize for the inconvenience, but ultimately we believe this will better protect LastPass users. Thank you for your understanding, and for using LastPass.
Regards,
The LastPass Team
Well that was kinda / sorta / very embarrassing for LastPass team. Ouch. By the way this has ZIP - Zero - NADA as in nothing to do with the previous story. This was just an issue at the last Pass servers. again - Ouch - sucks to be their marketing person right now.

VOICEMAIL - Kevin_WWDC_wrapup
Before we start talking about iOS 9 beta 1 - I want to point out I will not be talking about bugs in iOS 9 beta 1 or re-reporting those or any reports anything wonky with iOS 9 beta - it is a beta. There will be wonky things with the betas - and I do not talk about wonky and betas. I talk about Features being added or removed or changed with the new betas. Please keep that in mind as we go through beta 1 now and other beta for iOS 9 later on. Now I will say this - Beta’s are not optimized and depending on the device and apps you are using - you likely will see worse battery life with early beta’s vs older betas - keep that in mind when/ if you sign up for the public beta of iOS 9 next month.
Ok - Thanks to Francisco for this first one with regards to iOS 9 which is an article that goes over how Low Power Mode works for iOS 9.
I should point out one of the features of Low power mode - is turning off the display in 30 seconds - and once in Low Power mode - you can not change the Auto-lock setting - which really annoyed my son to no end - so I had to turn off low power mode for him. Low Power mode also turns off Background App Refresh. And of course auto push and fetch for emails - you need to manually fetch them in low Power mode. You know you are in that mode as the battery turns yellow.
So while it may sound like something you want to run all the time - if you have an Apple watch now and get annoyed by how quickly the screen turns off - then yeah this is not the feature for you.
The article talks about Network speed being effected. And motion and brightness reduced - plus other items in the past we talked about to save battery life.
This really comes down to a mode you don’t want to enable if you are going to be using the device much - but if you know you are going to stick your iphone in your pocket or backpack or purse for prolonged periods of time - then sure turn it on.

features-apple-didnt-tell-you-about/
From Nixis B
So I have iOS 9 running on a 6 plus. So far pretty stable for a first beta, nothing to special about it though
From Ryan B
Downloaded the beta to my iPhone 6 and I'm actually surprised how well it's working for me.
From Chris in London - he pointed out the new lower case letters on the keyboard when you are lowercase and upper case when upper case is selected.
From Geoff D
New keyboard is nice. Finally the shift key works how it should have always worked. The trackpad function is real nice also. Would like to see low power toggle in control center. Battery life so far is decent but less battery life is to be expected. Overall very smooth for a first beta with no real or major issues so far.
Per Chris’s comments - to get to the new lower case keys to show on the keyboard - the setting for this is not Settings - General - Keyboard - but rather - Settings — General — Accessibility — Keyboard.
Then you will see the option - Show lowercase keys and it seems to be toggled on by default. In this section there are also controls for Hardware keyboards - per Key Repeat, sticky keys and slow keys.
One thing I will be doing on a future episode is comparing iOS 8.4 to iOS 9 beta 1 for new features and removed features. I want to wait for iOS 8.4 and iOS 9 beta 2 to both be available before doing that - as the last couple of times things moved around most between beta 1 and beta 2 - and not so much after beta 2.
One of the new features I do want to mention in the beta 1 - is turning the flash on and off during a video recording. That is one I really could have used many times - where lighting changes and all of a sudden a video that started out ok - is in dire need of the flash - but you are in the middle of recording and don’t want to miss anything - now you can turn on the flash or turn it off mid video recording and then back again and again.
One other big addition to me at least is the ability to now email 15 photos at once - in the past we have always been limited to 5 photos at once.
One App that was updated in iOS 9 that many will have interest in that listen to this show and other podcasts is the Podcasts App. It is bumped up from version 2.2.1 to version 2.3
Some changes are good - some are not so good.
There is now a mini player bar which parks right above the row of buttons at the bottom of the screen, when you tap on that player bar in the middle it opens up the full play screen - where you can then tap on the artwork to get to the show notes.
On the not so good - right now - when looking at the show notes - where you tap on the show artwork - when an episode is playing - well the Phone number and email are no longer actionable links. Plus the notes are buried one click further down.
On the very good side - there is now push notifications you can enable on a per show basis - so now when a new episode of a show you are subscribed to come out - you will get a notification. It just will not be customized like what you get with the Tii App.
And there is also a new button at the bottom for Unplayed - it shows you unplayed episodes for all your shows combined - and sorted by dates - This Month, Last 3 months, last 6 months, 2014, 2013 and so on.
The My Stations button is now removed at the bottom it was removed to make room for the unplayed button. To see your stations they are now under My Podcasts - which was moved over where the My Stations button was. And unplayed is in the first position.
You can also add episode to the new Up Next feature. This means if you have lots of unplayed episodes - you can plan out how you want to play them back by adding the key ones to the up next list and then re-arranging them in that list.
Apple definitely is giving more controls to the user for managing their playback of podcasts. Especially with regards to the power users.
Hi Rob,
Will we ever see the option for Conference calling in FaceTime?
I think iOS 9 is an amazing marketing ploy. If you think about it, it is great that every device supports the update. When you look at iPad sales, they have not compared to iPhone, mainly due to carrier upgrade options. So Apple has introduced some amazing features that will encourage buyers to consider the Air or the Air two. But, again, you don't HAVE to; so it appeases the market. I will be interested to see what iOS 9 does for iPad upgrades.
I have been listening to different individuals review the new features in iOS 9. I, unlike some, am really excited about the upgrade to Notes. I agree that many of the features are over due. That being said, they did a great job of bringing aspects of Evernote and Onenote to the stock app. I am excited as now I can rely on the stock Notes app and free up space by removing Evernote and Onenote.

Thanks to Michael for this next one.
There is one new really great feature in iOS 9 you will not see android copy any time soon - and that is the ability to block ads.
iOS developers will be able to create extensions for Safari that block cookies, images, resources, pop-ups, and other web content. In other words it will do exactly the opposite of what google wants you to do.
Expect these apps that you can add to block ads to be very popular in the fall.

Ok - with iOS 8.4 launching any minute - now - the folks at TaiG that did the last jailbreak - and launching their jailbreak for iOS 8.3. And supposedly this will also work on iOS 8.4. At this point it is too late for apple to change the launch date. As such the TaiG felt they were safe to release the jailbreak.
I am going to say this nicely and politely - do not do the jailbreak. Not yet. Seems one there is an issue where many users get stuck at the 20% remaining level. The reason to wait - is this is just the first issue we are hearing about. Give the TaiG folks some time to hear the complaints and issues and fix they sofrware.
Also this jailbreak is only available on Windows computers - so there is that part of it for Mac OS X users.
But again wait at least one week before jailbreak - and best to do it at the end of a week - so if things go bad you have all weekend to revive your iPhone.

Hi Rob,
For video podcasts, and audio podcasts, I use Downcast.
This is a universal app which gives you many controls over your
playing. You can download or stream videos. You can set it to automatically
show videos in landscape. Player controls are simple and easy to use. You
can synch across devices using iCloud Sync. If you have a Mac you can
purchase the Mac version of Downcast and synch with that app as well.
It is also completely accessible as it works perfectly with VoiceOver on
both platforms.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.
One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came out which had a bunch of replies was from AURELIAN RADU who posted about the closing of the Instacast App.
And If you have not heard - the company behind instacast - and by company I mean - developer - has decided to shut down the servers supporting the sync’g of data and to shut down the app.
There were a few very sad and this bites type comments. Seems people are jumping to Overcast and Pocketcasts and Apple’s podcasts app among other. If you were using Instacast what app are you or did you jump to?
Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone. Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Thank you to Rob Walch and Tii. My kickstarter Pebble Watch had been giving me trouble for some time. I figured I was out of luck for a warranty on a two year old watch. On the recommendation of a caller a few episodes ago, I contacted Pebble with my screen artifact issues. They were quick to respond and I had a new original Pebble Watch within a week. http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-33220189
So who’s your daddy - well when it comes to Eddy Cue - it seems his daddy is Taylor Swift.
Because a day after Miss Swift wrote an open letter voicing her disappointment in Apple for their stance of not paying artist during the free 3 month trial period of Apple Music - where Miss Swift stated Apple has the money to pay said artists and that she was not going to allow her music to be part of Apple Music because of this. Well one day later - Mr. Cue is saying you are right Miss swift and we are sooo sorry - please forgive us - yes we now realize that even though we are paying more once users sign up - that we should have and will now pay producers for music played during the trial period.
If you were not keeping track at home - and really I don’t know why you would - but Apple was going to pay a little higher % of revenue to artists and record labels for music then Spotify. But unlike Spotify Apple was not going to pay artists and labels for plays during the free period.
Not sure if this means Miss Swifts 1989 album will or will not be available on Apple Music now. And really not much chance I am going to find out on my own.
Word is not all of music available for sale in iTunes will be available for Apple Music - I am sure there will be posts and sites popping up shortly to show exactly what is missing.
More on this to come for sure.

free-trial-royalties-still-up-in-the-air
And I was right here is a little more - seems Apple while they agreed to pay something during the free trial - it will be at a reduced rate and said reduced rate is yet to be agreed upon.
With spotify they typically pay 1/5th of the regular rate when it is a free trial.
So at this point it does not look like this one is completely resolved - expect me more Taylor Swift tweets, posts, open letters starting in 5, 4,3..

http://techcrunch.com/2015/06/10/apple-watch-
is-about-to-become-a-perfect-podcast-machine/
Interesting article in Tech Crunch titled - Appel Watch is about to become a perfect Podcast machine.
Part of the article I agree with the part about it being a great device for long form audio playback.
But he also says it will be a good device for recording audio - umm - no - not it will not.
Clearly the author has not tried talking his significant other via the apple watch - nothing is more awkward then doing a dick tracy pose when just talking on the phone - but having to hold a dick tracy pose
while you record a podcast - ummm - yeah - thanks but no thanks.
You are limited on how much content you can store on the Apple watch - but one GB of audio content is equal to roughly 1,500 to 2,000 minutes of audio content - if encoded correctly. Around 1,000 minutes if not encoded correctly - either way that is still a lot of content.
It will just take some Marco or someone else to come up with an easy way to manage your last 10 to 20 episodes on the watch and keep it in sync with what you consume on other devices.
While I don’t think the Apple watch is the perfect podcast machine - I do think it is a nice addition to the podcasting space when it comes to making podcasts easier to consume.

pro-to-have-2732-x-2048-pixel-resolution-16-06-2015/
Thanks to Chris in London for this next one.
Which has to do with the rumors about the next iPad Pro.
Seems people are digging into the source code of iOS 9 beta 1 - shocker - and what they found that based on a larger keyboard that was found - the iPad Pro or maxi - will come with a resolution of 2732 x 2048 - and that works out to be a 12.9 inch iPad at 263 pixels per inch density.
Rumors for the iPad Pro had originally been with a fall 2014 launch - which did not happen - then it was spring 2015 - and then a jump to sping 2016 when it did not launch in spring 2015 - and now with this code showing up - the latest launch window is likely Fall 2015. Lets go with October 23rd for availability date.
Other rumors are both a lightening and a USB C port.
41:29
http://fortune.com/2015/06/20/apple-iphone-
thicker/?xid=yahoo_fortune
The rumor mill is now starting to heat up again since WWDC is behind us. And this time we have one about the next gen iPhone and that rumor is it will be thicker.
This rumor comes out of Taiwan from sometimes right sometimes not even close - Ming-Chi Kuo - again remember his batting average is about 300 - which is still better then the sub 200 and 100’s that someone like Uncle Gene Munster bats.
So anyway this time Mr Kuo is saying the next iPhone will be thicker - not thinner then the current iPhones. My Kuo says the added thickness is not about making it more rigid or to increase battery life - but rather to better support force touch.
He is also saying the fall iPhones will remain with just two sizes - the current 4.7 and 5.5 inch sizes. Which I know many would be disappointed with.
If Apple wants to goose iphone sales this fall - they would be wise to offer a iPhone 6C or iPhone 6 minus at 4” to get upgrades from all those iPhone 4, 4S, 5 and 5S users that did not want a larger 4.7 or 5.5 inch iPhone - and are just waiting for a smaller / faster / more powerful 4 inch iphone.

wait and now we can officially kill this rumor - because it comes from ALWAYS wrong Digitimes.
This one sounded hokey anyway - but once you see Digitimes associated with a rumor - you can kill it dead.
There will 100% be a home button on the next iPhone - done.

Hi Rob,
Of Course Apple Will Update Apple Watch in 2016
This is one reason I did not buy an Apple Watch. I am going to wait for at the third version of the Apple Watch. In the meantime, I will stick with my Pebble Time Steel which I should get in August. .

Part of the rumors for the next gen Apple Watch include a front FaceTime video camera.
An improved wifi chip for find my Apple Watch feature
More independence from the iPhone.
Better Battery life
And additional version priced between the Apple Watch and the Apple Watch edition models.
And said Apple Watch 2 would launch in 2016 as Steve said.
But I am not so convinced and If the Apple watch 2 does launch in 2016 - I would guess it would be late 2016. But don’t be surprised if it is really spring 2017 before the Apple Watch 2 launches. It seems getting to a 2 or 3 year upgrade cycle would be more fitting for a watch - then the yearly upgrade cycle.
We shall see.

Ok - since Apple would not tell us how many Apple Watch’s sold already - that leaves a vacuum in our knowledge base on Apple products and as they say Anal-ists labor a vacuum.
So into that vacuum is pulled the latest estimates on Apple Watch sales - this coming from Slice Intelligence whom we mentioned before - they are saying that Apple has sold 2.8 million Apple watches as of Mid June 2015.

guarantees-to-highlight-the-growing-gap-
between-apple-and-google
Daniel Eran Dilger over at Apple Insider had another one of his excellent and very indepth posts - this one is titled - WWDC 2015 guaranteed to highlight growing gap between Apple and Google.
This is a nice article as it brings you through a history of how Android changed and morphed because of iOS - and also how it is very different from iOS. The key difference is in the privacy of users data. As in with iOS - Data is very private and in Android user data is sold to the highest, lowest and anywhere in between bidder.
Or to quote Daniel quote
Google has done such an atrocious job of securing Android that it really calls into question whether it can be trusted with any data that isn't explicitly public information intended for unrestricted broadcast.
unquote
Anyway - if you want a nice article to read to give you some nice ammo against that annoying Android fan boy friend or relative you know - this article is backed full of said ammo.

-leaves-600-million-samsung-phones-exposed.html
Hey and speaking of security issues - this one for Samsung is a whopper. Seems about oh 600 Million - yes as in - 6 0 0 coma 0 0 0 coma 0 0 0 - sammy devices are exposed to a security bug that could allow hackers to access files, read texts and evesdrop on calls.
Quote
an attacker who exploited the flaw could also secretly install malicious apps, access the phone's camera, microphone, GPS, and alter data.
Current and past generation Samsung phones, including the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S5, Galaxy S4, and Galaxy S4 Mini are affected.
unQuote
The flaw is located in the Sammy default keyboard. The keyboard can’t be disabled or uninstalled and can still be exploited even when it is no longer the default keyboard - brilliant.
Essentially hackers could gain access if they are on the same network.
Sammy has said they will roll out a security fix for this issue shortly. Will be interesting to see how long it takes for all 600 Million users to get said security update.
Naturally this issue was just as over reported as the one we started today’s show with for iOS - or not.

Thanks to Martin for this next one. Which is one you just have to scratch your head over - seems the Sony Xperia M4 aqua smartphone with quote 8GB of storage unquote - really has 1.26 GB of user accessible storage. Yes - out of 8 GB - you as the User gets a whopping 1.26 GB to use. wow - and ummm ouch. Actually I should be fair - it does allow side loading - via a an option for removable storage - and is sure sounds like that is a must add to the phone.

Hi Rob
Something I learned, which I thought I would share is, when using voice dictation, you can finish a sentence with a full stop and have a space after it, by saying your sentence and then the words "full stop, space bar". If you say space, it will type the word space.
Hope that helps.

Hi Rob,
I often email myself to send a link to check on later, an interesting article that I want to copy later into OneNote, and even an encouraging word when I get lonely. In settings, I set email to always include a blind copy to myself (Bcc:). By accident, I found that tapping on my email address on the Bcc line causes it to turn blue. By then holding down the address, I can move it to the main address line, hence avoiding having to re-type my address every time I want to email myself.
This only seems to work in the native mail app, but since emailing from other apps defaults to this one, this tip works great for me.

Hi Rob,
I can't wait to subscribe to Apple Music Family Plan. With Apple reaching out to Android users with their Apple Music App, don't you think it would be revolutionary if they gave them the Apple Podcast App too? I know it might not be the best app out there but it's defiantly the most used? Why stop there? With Mr Sonos reaching out to Apple, I'd bite their hand off. If Apple Music is to succeed it needs to be on high end home devices, like Sonos, too. Oh & put the Apple Podcast App on there too. I use Sonos daily & consume podcasts via Stitcher then have to change over to Apple Podcast App while in the car.

DisAfterDark Podcast
Hi Craig - I don’t ever see Apple putting out a Podcast App for Android. It is not in their best interest. Podcasts are what Apple used early one when rolling out Apple stores to different countries - Podcasts were this grouping of free content not limited by rights issues - that Apple could deploy in iTunes when they first set up in a new country - sometimes the only content. But with Android - what is the advantage for Appel to put the Podcasts app on there? It would give Android users easy access to great content on an Android device - again why would Apple do that. Fact is on Android Podcasts are 1/25th as popular on a per device basis then with iOS. Why would Apple want to encourage Android users to try out free content to get more out of their Android device. At least with Apple Music - the reason Apple is doing the Apple Music App is to get more paid subscribers.
Hi Rob,
I received my SOS charger it worked ONCE. I was told I would get another but still never got it.

proof-iphone-6-cases-protection-guaranteed-fo?ref=discovery
This episode for a Kickstarter project I came across one called - Dead Proof - iPhone 6 and 6+ cases Protection for Life.
These cases they say are designed to protect your iPhone 6 or 6+ from Water, Dirt, Dust and Shock.
And they have a kickstand to boot.
This one had a goal of just $3,800 - and has raised over $7,800
You can choose between Black, Red, Blue, White&Yellow, Green or Silver.
They claim it is the only waterproof cases with breathable Nano membrane that allow air molecules through for clear phone calls.
You have until Saturday Jul 11th at 4:47 PM CT to back this one.
Search for Dead Proof - two words in Kickstarter or in the show notes for ep 352 at today in iOS dot com

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thelightphone/the-
light-phone?ref=nav_search
Here is an interesting Kickstarter project - it is called the Light Phone With light spelled L I G H T - but really it should be spelled L I T E - because what said phone is - is just a phone - thats it. And it is small as in the size of a credit card and is just used for make and taking calls. The idea is you take it with you for those times you JUST need a phone - and not anything else. And you set your iPhone up to call forward to the Light phone.
It is minimalist and it is cheap - $100 - and it is available for you to fund on Kickstarter until Jun 27th at 8:55 AM CT - so for some sorry too late depending on when you hear this. This one has gone well past their goal of $200k - with over $390k and counting.
I would say watch the video - the guys don’t inspire a lot of confidence - well the artist guy at least does not. Like I said watch the video and decide if this is for you.
I think it is interesting - and I like the minimalist design of this - but I will be waiting until they are actually shipping before I even think about it. Still I think this is the type of product that is inevitable - when you have the pendulum swing so far in one direction with bigger phones and more features - you need the yang for that ying.
In the comments for this one - there is mention of a similar phone already on the market. So also read over the comments - and as with any Kickstarter project - I would recommend you read the comments to see if the founders are answering questions and how they answer the questions.

http://www.macxdvd.com/mac-video-converter-pro/
I have a special bonus Promo code offer - this is for Mac users. I usually don’t talk Mac stuff - but this App is really a great addition for all iOS users with Macs. It is for the App - MacX Video Converter Pro - and it is a great great Video Conversion Program. This App is normally $50 - it is on sale for $35 right now.
Here is a description of this app.
MacX Video Converter Pro - feature-rich, high quality and blazingly fast video converter for Mac OS TEN.
Convert HD M2TS MKV AVC TS To iPhone iPad Android
Built in 320+ video codecs and 50+ audio codecs, MacX Video Converter Pro brings you an all-in-one solution to convert HD & SD videos among almost every video codec so that you can play videos on iOS or iPod device, or even any Android device. Optimized kernel tech guarantees 83X fast speed and high quality image. Free to customize videos: cut, trim, crop, merge, add subtitle and watermark etc.
Download Online Videos, Make Photo Slideshow, Record Screen casts.
Works for online video: download online videos from YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo, Vevo, Dailymotion, and 300+ video sites in one click. Make funny photo slideshow, and create video gallery by recording on-screen activity freely.
This is really a great app for downloading Youtube Videos - and then converting them to Audio if you need just the Audio. Or taking any of your videos and converting to a lower bit rate - because well iPhone Videos are recorded way way to high a bit rate for use as a Podcast or to email to relatives.
This one app solves all of my Video conversion needs and screen cast needs - and like they say it is lightening fast.
Email me today in iOS at gmail dot com and put MacX Video in the subject line - and here is what you also need to do for this one - you need to write a review of Today in iOS Podcast in iTunes - and let me know the title of the review in iTunes. If you wrote one before - just let me know the old review title. I will then pick 8 random winners around July 4th for this one confirm the reviews are there and send out the license code. So get me the email with the reviews ASAP. This really is a great app and I want to thank the devs for sending over the license codes to give out. This is one App ALL Mac users will love.
I know I am loving it - and it has already saved me a bunch of time on some video conversions I had to do this past week.

store-stops-selling-the-original-ipad-mini/#.tivas2:VBTn
Were you a fan of non-retina iPad Mini’s - yeah well sorry to tell you - no soup for you any more - as Apple has stopped selling the original iPad Mini.
So from this point on for new iPad’s - they all have retina displays and all have 64 bit processors.
The price difference between the iPad Mini and iPad Mini 2 was small - just $50 - but the tech specs difference was huge with the much better processor and much better display.
So probably no tears shed on this change.

Hi Rob,
I ordered my Apple Watch on 29 April. It arrived on 6 June and this was a bit of a surprise as the date quoted by Apple was the 16th b
As a visually impaired user, I have paired the watch with a Bluetooth r headset as I use Voiceover and everything works fine. The only problem that I have noticed so far is that when I make or receive phone calls, the audio switches from the Bluetooth to the watch speaker. When the call ends, the audio reverts back to Bluetooth. I suspect that this is something Apple has overlooked.
Do you know if this is something that will be resolved with the updated operating system?

Hi Rob,
Yeah thanks for the mention. The News App looks good. Very much like Flipboard. But without the flipping. Although not the ability for creation of your own curated magazine as Flipboard allows. Plus was perplexed a bit, by no Breaking News Stream from Apple where you could select A group of Breaking News sites, Breaking Notifications etc. Perhaps its there but we don't have enough information yet. Just thought, if your going to have a News App it should open to the latest Breaking News. Hence News.
Understand, Filpboard in negotiations with an acquisition by Twitter. Have to wait and see on that one.
Was hoping one-day, Flipboard would figure out shared advertising revenue to user created magazines that gain in popularity and well let users make some money thru advertising insertions based on the Mags theme.
Just a few thoughts
Chris
Hi Rob!
After watching the keynote, I guess it's safe to say that nothing revolutionary was presented, but rather we'll be waiting to see how Apple's take on several existing features on other platforms turn out , especially considering user experience.
Do you think the multitasking features being only fully available for the iPad Air 2 will mean a boost in sales, being the final push many people need to update their iPads?

Hi Rob,
I'm in the process of collating past / present family pictures. Digitizing from various sources, and on to my hard drives. Once there I'm going to edit, and upload to icloud.
My question resides in geo tagging. Do you, or any of your listeners, have a ios killer app to aid and geotag photo(s) that would save me time and effort?
Really love the show, but can't help but noticing I'm sending this to a gmail a/c! For shame.

http://www.wxyz.com/news/att-hit-with-100m-
fine-for-its-unlimited-data-plans
Hi Rob,
I received this text from AT&T this afternoon:
ATT Free Msg: Your data has reached 75% of the 5GB network management threshold. If you exceed 5GB this month, you may experience reduced data speeds at times and in areas that are experiencing network congestion. Wi-Fi helps you avoid reduced speeds. For more info visit att.com/datainfo or att.com/broadbandinfo
To which I answer:
My plan has unlimited data, "unlimited is unlimited" I'm going to complain to the FCC
What do you think?
Did I do the right thing?
Thanks,
David
Hi David,
This is a change from the past where they just throttled you because they felt like it.
Now they are saying they will just throttle you when you hit areas with network congestion.
Part of the change was per the FTC and FCC cracking down on them.
This is their answer to those complaints.
Rob W
And you know what it was a little to little a little to late for AT&T - because the FCC just hit AT&T with a $100 Million dollar fine as in 1 0 0 coma 0 0 0 coma 0 0 0 with a dollar sign before all of that.
The FCC said the company misled consumers into buying plans they believed would give them unlimited ability to send and receive data - but that once the consumer reached a certain level that the data would be slowed down significantly.
The FTC also sued AT&T back in the fall on this as well.
So anyway - David no need for you to write to the FCC or the FTC - they are already flogging AT&T over this issue.
Hi Rob
I have listened since the very beginning and love the show
Seem to remember all the complaints you used to received about mobile phone networks throttling speeds of users on an unlimited package.
Looks like they finally got their comeuppance.

Matt - From Peterborough, UK

http://www.cultofmac.com/326542/teen-killed-
after-using-app-to-track-lost-smartphone/
Here is a sad story to come to the end of news items - an it is about a teenage named Jeremy Cook who was killed in Brampton Ontario when he used find my iPhone to track his missing iphone.
He did not think it was stollen he just left it in a taxi.
He went to where it said his phone was - and three other youths gunned him down.
This is a lesson to learn - if you track your iPhone down to a part of town you are not familiar with or even if you are - don’t approach strangers about your phone - call the police and let them handle it - no iOS device is worth a life - period.
My condolences go out to Jeremy Cooks family. Jeremy was 18 years old at the time of his death.
