Welcome to the show I am your host Rob and this is the Today in iOS podcast -  First up I want to thank STACY for sending in the music you hear in the background. STACY wrote:

    Hi Rob,

I created this song called GEOSYNCHRONOUS with the App Korg Gadget - and the track was "mastered" within Audioshare using the inter-app audio apps AUFX:Peak EQ, AUFX:Push generic:subtle preset

This is from my Album Orbiting Moodswings where all the songs were created on iOS devices.  You can find my music by searching for Spectral Sevenths two words in Spotify.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote ““the iPad is a disappointing effort that fails to live up to the hype. The iPad is both an oversized iPod Touch and an under-powered netbook.

“The iPad is a not so ‘magical’ e-reader. Expect to hear a lot of: ‘I spent a cold night in line for this?'”

    Scott Moritz , TheStreet.com, 9 March 2010

Scott I am guessing what you heard a lot more of after the iPad came out was the following question - I payed ten dollars a week to the street.com for this advice?  Just Sayin

    http://9to5mac.com/2015/07/22/ios-9-public-beta-update/

Right after the last Episode - Apple went and released the 2nd public beta to testers.  This is the same one as the 4th beta for devs.  Just looks like they are releasing to devs first and then a day or so later to the public testers.

Makes sense - if anything major pops up - they keep it limited to those that are more understanding of issues.

Before you start doing beta testing - here is an email I need to read.

    Hi Rob,

I wanted to talk about my experience with iOS 9 public beta. I really wish I would have followed your advice and not have installed it. The first week was smooth. So I continued to use the iOS, but then I started experiencing massive bugs. My phone screen would turn blue and then restart itself over and over. My apple music app would crash, and during text my phone would freeze causing me to have to hard reset. Long story short the iOS cause so much issues I couldn't even update to the official iOS 8.4 without factory resetting my device. Hopefully this email will help to discourage those daring enough to download the beta especially on their main device.

    Regards,

    Zatise B

Normally I don’t report on Bugs in Betas - just features - and really I am not reporting on bugs I found in iOS 9 - just really a reminder to those thinking of doing the public beta - beta means testing phase - and testing phase means find bugs - and bugs there are to find.  So again if you are not someone that can live with issues like freezes and reboots and unresponsiveness or Goat Simulator not working right (my son told me to mention that).  Then stay away from the Beta’s.  Beta’s are for those that have multiple devices and don’t rely on their device for work or as their main device.

    http://www.appleworld.today/blog/2015/7/22/smart-move-apple-

    disables-app-reviews-for-those-running-ios-9-beta

If you are running the iOS 9 betas one thing you can’t do that those on iOS 8.4 can - is write reviews of Apps.  This is actually a good thing - as it seems those running the public betas were writing negative reviews for Apps that were not working correctly with the iOS 9 beta.  Like as my son reminds - that Goat Simulator is not working correctly.  Why this is a good thing - especially for devs - is that it is not fair to negatively review an App because it does not work 100% with a beta.  It is still a beta.  Devs need time to get their apps fixed and then submitted and then approved in the App store.  Which is why the last beta will likely be somewhere around Mid August or the week after.

So if you are a public beta tester of iOS 9 - do not be upset you can not write App reviews - as really you should be concentrating on the bugs and issues you find with the Beta itself and reporting them back to Apple - and not putting in 1 star reviews for an App that is not playing nice yet with a beta.

    http://social.techcrunch.com/2015/07/21/apple-music-users/

So how is Apple Music doing -  well Apple did not give specific numbers - they did say quote Millions and millions of customers are already experiencing Apple Music and the number is growing substantially every day unquote

Obviously in the free 3 month trial period - those numbers if there were even specific numbers would not mean a lot - the question will be come 3, 4, 5 months from know what % stay with the paid service - and what is that number.

Since Apple does need to pay record labels and the like - it is possible leaks will happen and we will find out what those real numbers are maybe Apple will even give those numbers - Ummm - No.

Spotify has about 20 Million Paid monthly subscribers.  With that service likely to take the biggest hit - as Pandora has said so far Apple music has not effected it user numbers at all.

Right now as of July 28th - iOS 8.4 has been installed by 55% of iOS users.  So really right now Apple music is only available to about half the iOS users.

Oh and snap and update on this already.  Looks like the Major labels are already talking and saying that Apple Music already has over 10 Million Active users. Now the question really comes down to can Apple fix the bugs people are reporting before the 3 month subscription period is over and before users get frustrated enough to figure out how to turn off the auto subscription option.

Hey Rob - I have Spotify Premium as a freebie my from telco here in NZ, so won't be subscribing to Apple Music but i have been enjoying the free trial.

The integration with Siri is amazing. It's awesome to be able to say 'Siri play Lyin Eyes by the Eagles' for instance, but even more incredible to able to say 'Siri, play me the Top 20 songs from 1984', and they just start playing.

I find the interface a bit messy, but the suggestions and Siri integration make a compelling product.

    Hi Rob,

Good news for HSBC uK customers: Apple Pay is up and running.

    Hello Rob,

I just found a feature in iOS 9 public beta 2 That I have not seen mentioned anywhere yet.

In the Mail app, I was composing an email.  I noticed an old email address that was no longer in my contacts.  So I tryied to remove it.  In iOS 8, I would tap ion the (i) info icon next to the email address to delete in the suggested email.  In the contact info dialog,  tap "Remove from recents".  However, In iOS 9 "Remove from recents" is gone!

I did find the following under Settings -> Mail, Contacts, and Calendars:

If I toggle "Contacts Found in Mail" off and back on, all old email addresses not in Contacts was removed.

I hope Apple brings back the old "Remove from Recents" so, I can individually remove old email addresses.

    Regards,

    Steven (In Houston)

    Hi Rob,

Want to commend you for your help and advice over past 8 years. I bought Harry's razor last year on your recommendation and love it. This 80 year old has tried many razors through the years and Harry's is best for me!

    Regards,

    Skip

    Rob,

I have been a loyal Harry's customer since listening to the Tii podcast and their sponsorship several months ago. I tried Harry's and haven't looked back since. Best shave I have ever had along with a nice day long smooth face...

Thanks again for all you do for us iOS folks and bringing more airtime for your sponsors.

Thanks Skip and Sean for the feedback and thanks for supporting our sponsor  and I want to thank Harrys for sponsoring this episode - if you go to harrys dot com - that is h a r r y s dot com and use the promo code t i i - you will save $5 on your first order.

Lets face it guys one of the worst parts about shaving is tracking down that person to unlock to the display case so you can get your razors - the other worst part is the price you pay for said razors when you get to the check out counter.  Harry's helps on both those fronts - no need to go to the store - you just order on line and get the razors delivered right to your door with free shipping.  The starter kit The Truman Set is amazing - for $15 you get a razor - Foaming Shave Gel and 3 razor blades - all in a great package that screams GIFT ME GIFT ME - are you listening ladies.

And that new Foaming Shave Gel is great.  If you look at what it is made from you might not know if you should eat it or shave with it.  The ingredients include Licorice Root extract, a blend of Cucumber and Aloe - after using it my wife was asking what smelled sooo good.  It really is nice to shave with something that is not made from industrial chemicals.

I am 100% a full fledged Harrys customer - have been for over a year - that is my blade - nothing else.  And they really are the best blades out there - and that is not an accident - Harry’s purchased a German factory to make the blades for their razors.  They offer a close comfortable shave with each blade lasting well over a month.

Once again go to Harrys.com now and save $5 off when you enter the code - t i i with your first purchase.  That is h a r r y s dot com and enter the coupon code T I I at check out to save $5 on your first purchase and start shaving better today or at least as soon as your new shave kit arrives at your door step.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from STAN BENTLY who posted the following question

    Quote

Can someone point me to a resource that I can use to get Sync over Wi-Fi to work?  I have 4 devices, all running iOS8.4, the latest iTunes version, Sync over WiFi checked in the Summary section for all devices.  However when I attempt to perform a wifi sync, I get a "Looking for iPhone" popup, then it and the device on the menu disappear.  I've reset everything I can think of but still no use.

I'm trying to be able to sync my apps with iTunes so I only have to download the apps once, rather than for each device.

    Thanks in advance.

    Unquote

Some of the replies he had were the following.

From Robert Kelly quote  I've had that problem for many years regardless of iPhone model or iOS and iTunes software.

The only thing that seems to work for me, currently, is making sure my phone is on and unlocked during the entire sync.  unquote

And from Francisco Tapia quote The sync over wifi is very buggy. I usually have to sync over a cable with each device that is buggy.

    I typically

    1) deselect sync over wifi

    2) sync

    3) enable sync over wifi

    4) sync once more.

Then disconnect and I am able to sync once again.    unquote

Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Folks Go to today in iOS dot com slash community to join in.

Also from the Google Plus community was this post from Tosin Oladini who wrote:

quote Just thought I'd put this out there for any folks having any issues on the iOS 9 beta which have developed since the 2nd public beta or wasn't fixed by it, it might be worth trying "reset all settings ". I had issues with VoiceOver in the first public beta and then notification centre and control centre would not work in the 2nd. Simply resetting all settings fixed it though I had already reported it to Apple via the feedback app. Definitely worth a try. You never know unquote

    http://www.engadget.com/2015/07/22/apple-watch-shipments/

Lets talk about what the likely number of Apple Watches sold were by looking at all the data out there from Apple and from Slice and other sources.

Last quarter - Other Products was $2,641 Million -  The previous quarter it was $1,689  and $1,767 for the year ago quarter.

For the year ago quarter iPod’s were $442 Mil with Accessories $1,325 Mil

The year before that it was $773 and $1,179

If we project to this year - iPod Sales were probably around 300 Mil at most.  with Accessories at 1,100 Mil.

That leaves 1,241 Mil for Apple Watches - which jives with what was also said in the conference call.  That Apple Watch accounted for well over 100% of the growth for that category with declines in both iPods and Accessories.

If we look at the slice data for an ASP - they found that the ASP of their customers came in at $505.  While we can through out their estimates on unit sales - the ASP number should be close to reality - as that is not a sample and projection - but rather from looking at actual unit sales pricing and getting an ASP for their customers - which is a large enough sample it should be within a couple of % points of reality.

If we take $1,241 Mil and an ASP of $505 = 2.457 Million units.

How does that jive with Tim cooks comments it out sold the iPad in its comparable launch window.

The original iPad launched on April 3rd 2010 - and through June 26th 2010 - Apple Sold 3.27 Million units - during what was an 85 day window. We do know they sold >300,000 units on the first day.  That leaves 2.9 Million units over 84 days = 35,357 per day.

The Apple Watch went on Sale April 24th and the quarter ended on June 27th.  That is 65 days.  If we take the 35,357 per day sales and multiply it by 64 and then add 300,000 you get 2.562 Million units - or slightly more than the 2.457 Million I estimated above.  How do I explain the difference - simple we know that in the first 45 to 60 days of the iPad being on sale after the initial push - it was in short supply.  That means for many of those days because of supply constraint - the iPad was not selling anywhere near that average number. In reality the iPad would have sold easily well below the 2.457 Million number in the first 65 days.

Or you could say the ASP’s from Slice were a little high.  In any case what we get is Apple Watch sales last quarter below well below the 3 Million unit mark.  And way way below the Engadget article saying there was 4 Million units sold.

Again this 2.5 Million or even 2.6 Million unit number is not bad considering that Apple was supply constrained.  And it is much higher than any other smartphone watch sales to date.  It is just lower than what the folks on Wallstreet were estimating.

Endgadget had an article titled - Apple Already took 75% of the Smartwarch Market - and they based that on Apple selling 4 Million units.  Which again if you look at the facts just can not be.

These numbers come from Strategy Analytics - that had the Global Smartphone market at 5.3 Million units last quarter with Apple being 4 Million.

If we adjust that to 2.6 Million (best case for Apple Watch) and add in the 1.3 Million for everyone else - we get 3.9 Million units - which I don’t even need a calculator to say Apple had 2/3rds of the smartphone market last quarter - which is still a great number.

Johnny Evans at Computer world had an article on this and said we should throw out any estimates below 3 Million - I think he reversed that - we should throw out any estimates above 3 Million.

From the rumor mill comes a potential photo of the front panel on what they are saying is the iPhone 6S.  And shocker it looks just like the front panel of the iPhone 6 - which is pretty much what everyone is expecting.

At this point Apple suppliers have to be ramping up production on the next gen iPhones components.  So see pictures of the next gen housing is not surprising at all.

The one thing we have not seen photos of yet - and likely will not see until close to the end of August is the finished rear panel with the camera mounted - will it be flush with the 6S and 6S+ ?  If it is - it bodes well for the LynX rumor - if not then it will mean another year at least for the LynX camera module - which I am really rooting and hoping for in the iPhone 2015 generation.

    http://www.wsj.com/articles/nike-apple-agree-to-settle-

    nike-fuelband-class-action-suit-1438016873

This next one is about a class action suit that was put forth towards Nike and Apple - This is with regards to the Nike+ Fuelband - and the suit alleges the companies misled consumers about the accuracy of the device.  If you are someone that purchased one between Jan 19th 2012 and June 17th 2015 - you are now eligible for settlement check of $15 or a nike gift card for $25.  The suit which was originally brought against both Nike and Apple in 2013 - alleged that quote false and/or misleading statements were made regarding the Nike+ fuel bands ability to accurately track steps and calories unquote and there were other claims - but that is the big one.

My son has the Nike+ Fuelband - so I went and put in for the the $15 Check.  I will have a link in the show notes for Ep 357 titled - Nike+ Fuel Band Settlement - that will take you to the page where you can apply for the settlement.

You will need the serial number of your fuel band or bands to get the check or checks or gift card or cards.

Both Nike and Apple deny the claims in the suit - And Nike will be the one responsible for the settlement payments according to the terms of the settlement.  Guess with All of Apples Cash over seas - they really did not have any spare change laying around.

My Son loves his nike+ fuel band - so I don’t have the heart to tell him about this.  I will just take the $15 and get him an iTunes gift card and tell him it is for being an awesome son or wait for him to do something nice for someone or something.

    http://thehackernews.com/2015/07/android-phone-hacking.html?m=1

Remember all the media brew ha ha - about when you had a friend send you a text message with some special characters - and it could cause your iPhone to reboot.  This had lots and lots of press coverage from mainstream press to almost every tech blog. This was known as the effective Power bug and you can google that to see the over reporting on this issue.  An issue that was completely patched in iOS 8.4 by the way.

Well what if I told you there was an exploit - where all someone had to do was send you a text message and if you choose to read it or not i.e. where you take no action at all - it would give the sender of that message control of your device if all they knew was your phone number.  Something that effects over 900 Million devices.

Let me read a quote from Zimperium a mobile security blog - quote

Attackers only need your mobile number, using which they can remotely execute code via a specially crafted media file delivered via MMS. A fully weaponized successful attack could even delete the message before you see it. You will only see the notification. These vulnerabilities are extremely dangerous because they do not require that the victim take any action to be exploited. Unlike spear-phishing, where the victim needs to open a PDF file or a link sent by the attacker, this vulnerability can be triggered while you sleep. Before you wake up, the attacker will remove any signs of the device being compromised and you will continue your day as usual – with a trojaned phone. unquote.

Now If this exploit was for iOS - it would be front page USA Today news - front of CNN.com news - it was be the most talked about exploit - and have a Gate name assigned like TrojanGate or ZombieGate.  But Luckily for us iOS users - this is not an iOS exploit - but it is a real Android exploit - and it is for any devices running Android 2.2 to 5.1 - which is over 950 Million Android phones. This is due to an exploit in Stagefright the multimedia component in Android - So I guess you should call this StagefrightGate if we are being fair and all - And being fair I should mention that Google has a patch now for this and is sending to manufacturers - that will then send to Carriers and who knows - 6 months from now - maybe up to 25% of devices will have the patch - but many will never be patched.  Kind of sucks to have an Android Phone - Just Sayin

Will be interesting to see how widely this one is covered in the press.  Oh and a quick update - seems that some in the press are covering this - NPR, Forbes and Engadget three of the bigger names that covered this so far.  Just google - Stagefright MMS exploit - to see more on this - and I am not going to say I get any type of satisfaction out of this type of story - because that would be wrong to say - out loud at least.

And looking at USA Today - the top of the tech stories the morning after this news broke - was OnePlus2 2 Hopes to be a new flagship killer to rival iPhone - Yeah no news bias at all.

I did reach out to Paul Asadoorian - CEO of Security Weekly - for his opinion on this - his recommendation for any Android users are

quote - - Patch your device (if and when its available)

    - In the mean time turn off the feature that automatically receives MMS

And then trade in your Android device and get an iPhone if you really care about security.   ok - that 3rd point I added - but isn’t a no duhhh addition.  If you care about security after all would you not already be on an iPhone.

And by the way take a look at where stagefrightgate.com takes you.

    Hi Rob,

Thought you might find this PDF of Apple Patent interesting.  I was working on a patent search today for a client and came across this.  Someone stealing an iPhone would know to turn it off so that it could not be located.  This Apple patent shows a phone that periodically powers up so that it may report its location even when turned off.

    Regards,

    Bill

Bill thanks for sending over Patent US 8,840,303 B2 from Sep 30th 2014 - titled Apparatus and method for determining a wireless devices location after shutdown.

And from the Abstract - quote A wireless data processing device is described which periodically exits an unpowered state and transmits location data. unquote

So in a nut shell every so often ET wakes up and phones home with its GPS or Wireless triangulation data.  Apple has yet to say this is an available option - Maybe it will be in iOS 10.  This does seem like a pretty valuable option to add to iOS devices.

    Hi Rob,

What happened to the YouTube app on the Apple TV?

    Thanks,

    Laura B

Google Killed the API’s that powered it.  So if you have a 2nd gen Apple TV - no more Youtube for you.  This was something we talked about a little back in April when it was first announced and happened.  But then we were expecting a new Apple TV in June - and well that did not happen.  So many of us with Apple TV - 2nd gen - no longer are apple to get episodes of Annoying Orange or see Pugs saying I Love You. Or those minecraft videos from the guy with the British accent that has pugs.  Yup all those videos are gone as is the entire Youtube App for 2nd gen owners - if you are 3rd Gen Apple TV owner - you should be able to get the new Youtube app - if you make sure you are updated to the latest version of software for your Apple TV - by going to Settings - General - Update Software.

    znaps-the-9-magnetic-adapter-for-your-mobile-devic

Just a quick update on the ZNAPS Kickstarter project - On the last episode I said they were just over $500k in funding and 19,000 backers.  Now they are over $1.3 Mil and over 47,500 backers.  Kudos to the team.

For those that don’t remember or did not listen to the last episode - this is the adapter that turns your lightening port into a mag safe lightening port.  Go to kickstarter dot com and search for Z N A P S - lets see who the first listener is to actually get this product delivered.  Right now they are saying November 2015 - No way - Again - if I get this before Easter next year I will be happy.

By the way them getting over 1Mil dollars means they have unlocked all their stretch goals for this device - with the next stretch goal being at 2 Mil Canadian dollars (right now they are over 1.7 Mil Canadian dollard) and that stretch goal being for a version for a USB-C connector / adapter.  Hopefully they get to that goal - which would mean more money from me - as I definitely would get that.  Per the stretch goals that were unlocked - one of them was putting a power LED indicator on both sides of the adapter - Another was special designs.  But really the dual side for LED indicator was the one I really liked.

You have until August 14th at 11:09 AM CT to fund this one.

    http://reservestrap.com

Hey Rob, thought you'd like these two products:

This first one I don't think has been mentioned on the show yet. It's an Apple Watch band that charges the phone while you wear it through the watch's hidden accessory port. I haven't heard of anyone who's been able to access that port yet, let alone use it for anything like charging:

    http://reservestrap.com/

The holy grail would be a usb directly on the watch band allowing you to plug it into your computer for recharging and even data transfer!

Also thought you might like this selfie stick / microphone combo on indiegogo:

    https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/solocam#/story

Hard to explain, just check out the photos and you'll get it.

And lastly thanks for the tip from your listener about using iMovie for my wife's slideshow this weekend, I think I'll do that!

    Regards,

    Aric B

Hi Aric - thanks for the heads up on these two items.

The first one is the reserve strap - which is similar to one we talked about on ep 344 called the Wipowerband - which right now on their site - does not look to good.  With just a coming soon message - that one was supposed to cost $99.  While that one got a lot of press - right now it does not look like they have a product. Can you say VaporWare.

Aric - the one you are talking about the Reserve Strap - has an Order now button - and a price of $250 for either the 38 or 42 MM size - if you go to order this make sure to select the correct size as it defaults to 38 mm.  This one they are claiming gives you 2.7 X the power - for an additional 30 hours of usage.  Essentially taking your from 1 1/2 days to over 3 days of solid usage.

The Reserve strap also comes in three colors - White, Grey and Black - so yes - for all those looking to get a black strap there you go.

Some other specs - They say it is water resistant.  It has a micro USB charging Port.  It does not look like it will charge from the inductive charging port.  You will need to plug in a micro USB connector.

They also say it adheres to Apple’s Official Band design guidelines.

And it does look very nice.

At $99 I would pull the trigger right away but at $250 - I am going to have to wait until they are shipping and hear how it goes - this is one of those bands that will connect to the hidden connector under your strap.  If anyone does order the Reserve Strap - please call in with a review once you get one.  Or if the folks there at Reserve Strap have press units - you know you can always send one my way.  Just sayin.

And the Folks at Reserve Strap did answer my question on Delivery - November 3rd is their ship date for the strap.

    46:17

    https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/solocam#/story

Aric per your second item you mention the SoloCam - it is a selfie stick that at the end you hold - it has an HD mic a bluetooth connection and a smart  App where it all combines to be a mini video recording studio.

Pricing ranges from $49 for the basic Selfie stick and HD mic to $149 for the Super HD Mic, upgraded stick, adapters, stereo connector and a custom Bag.  To $499 for the Ultra HD mic, stereo connector, Adaptors, Custom Case, upgrade stick and custom logo on the mic flag.

Glad I just do audio.  But for your video podcasters or Youtubers - this is something you will want to check out - search for Solocam - one word at indie gogo dot com.

Right now they have $30k in funding with a goal of $40k.

you have until August 5th to fund this project.

    Hi Rob,

    I Wonder if this works

    Regards,

    Tash

Thanks Tash - and the this Tash is referring to is an article on iPhone hacks that goes over how to change the DNS server on your iOS device.

If you are noticing really slow internet connections when surfing - this might be one possible solution - it is where you over ride the default DNS your ISP provides with a new one you select - in the article they make reference to a free and supposedly faster DNS from Google and another from OpenDNS - you know if you don’t want the NSA - I mean Google spying on what you are looking at.  This is something I am going to test out with my Wife’s iPad mini - as she has been complaining recently about internet speed.

Of course - I would recommend before you do any of this - if you are seeing slowed wifi performance on your iOS device - first try the old standby of force quitting all open apps - then go to settings - reset - reset network settings - and see how it works after the reboot - if it is still slow - then give this a try.

Look for the link in the show notes titled - How to change the DNS server on your iPhone and iPad

    Hi Rob,

I'm flying out of the country soon and need to unlock my wife's 5S. She's still on 8.0.2 but I stopped jailbreaking a while back so I'm not sure what's available to jailbreakers.

If I jailbreak her 5S is there an unlock tweak like there was back in the day?

I called ATT and they refuse to unlock unless I pay ETFs and give up my Grandfathered Unlimited data plans. So I need another solution.

BTW, Are IMEI unlock sites scams? How can they override AT&T?

    Regards,

    Mazin

    Rob,

Just wanted to write in with a little feedback on iPhone 6/6 Plus call quality. I have a 6 Plus (first in line on launch day 😊) and my sister had an iPhone 5 until a few weeks ago when she bought a 6. Her and I immediately noticed an increase in voice quality with our calls. It actually sounds like she's talking over my shoulder rather than over the phone. We both have AT&T. Kudos to Apple on a nice improvement that probably flew under the radar for most users.

    https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/apple-adjusts-its-app-

    store-algorithm-impacting-some-ipad-austin-m

Some interesting info for App devs - seems Apple is adjusting its App Store Algorithm again.

Originally the App store ranking algorithm was pretty simple - it was the number of new sales / downloads in the last 7 days with a weight average for the last 24, 48 and 72 hours.  I proved this out early on.  But then Apple made changes and pulled in other criteria - like amount of times the app was launched - so usage came into play.  It is also believed that Average ranking is also at play.  No one really knows all the components any more - but it is clear from time to time it gets adjusted and a bunch of apps drop and some jump up initially after said change - and one of those events happened on or around July 17th.

If you are an app dev - here is my best recommendation - don’t worry about rankings - make a good app - and add in incentives to get your audience to rate the app.  Don’t be overly spammy with pop up ads and types of actions that get in the way of using the app.  Easy of use and a smooth flow from action to action with minimal or no need to click the X to get rid of the ad - will help in getting a good rating.

If you are an App dev - look for the article - Apple Adjust its App store algorithm in the show notes for Ep 357 at today in iOS dot com.

    Hi Rob,

After listening to tii 356 this week & your shenanigans using your  Watch to pay, I thought I'd share my sightings of  Watches compared to other Smart Watches.

Since the launch of  Watch I've spotted 5, & each owner when extensively interrogated, love their  Sport Watches. Each 1 of them has told me it's an extension of their iPhone that effectively releases them from their iPhone. Also each person reports 2 days battery. I've also seen 2 pebble original (1 was my own) in the same time. I loved mine but only bought it to justify the existence of smart watches. They are basic but do what they do very well. In the same time I've seen no android wear watches. I'm not surprised about that!

Thanks for all you do educating us on the ways of the 

    Hi Leo

After listening to the July 17th episode, I felt a strong need to write and defend my love for the iPod Touch.  I know my situation is probably totally unique but I love my iPod touch and have even considered buying a backup in case they stop selling them as you have suggested.  First things first, I am a 49 year old female.  I have had an iPod Touch for years, long before my first iPhone. the 5c. I would give up my phone any day before my Touch.  I use my Touch strictly for podcast & music.  Just as I prefer reading books on a Kindle rather than my tablet, I prefer to keep it all separate.  In addition, my employer does not want to see phones lying on our desk during work hours but they have no problem with a listening device.  Last but not least, for reasons I can not explain, I get much better battery life and Wifi connection from my iPod Touch than I ever have from my iphone.

Just a fan letting you know we're still out here.

    regards,

    Sharon Fultz

Well Sharon - I am guessing you were trying to get ahold of Leo Laporte from that show with the completely un-original name that way to similar to the name Today in iOS.  I have no qualms with the iPod 6th generation.  I think it is a very nice device.  Especially if you are a dev of iOS devices or a pre-teen or just looking for a small wifi only device that fits in your pocket - like you are.  I was very very happy to see the iPod Touch 6th gen updated and released.  My only neg comments per it - was with regards to the 16 and 32 gb capacity units - I would not recommend either - if you are serious user - go to 128 gb - 2 or 3 or 4 years from now you will be very glad you did. 64 GB is the min storage level I would recommend.

Next week the episode will likely be delayed to the end of the week - I will be going to Podcast Movement this weekend in Dallas Texas where Libsyn will be exhibiting and I will be speaking.  These events I typically don’t get anything done outside of answering fires on email.  So it will be the end of next week likely before I get back to show notes.  But hey 5 eps released in July - not bad.  Thanks to everyone that sent in feedback this month - your feedback is what makes this show - and I just want to say it is greatly appreciated.  You are the best audience ever - ok - lets wrap this up before we all start crying.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote ““Any tablet computer, including Apple’s eagerly anticipated iPad, will face serious problems in generating big sales. Tablets look cool, but the reality is they don’t do anything new. unquote

Michael Comeau, Minyanville, 5 March 2010

I guess Big is a matter of perspective. Apple sells 4+ Million Macs a quarter - they sell more then double that for iPads in a bad quarter.  Is that big?  Is 275 Million iPads sold in the first 5 years considered big?  Just Askin

    http://fortune.com/2015/07/18/apple-revenue-eps-2015q3/

Last week Google released numbers that were actually higher than expectations - well Yawn you say - that is normal for Apple - I mean Apple almost always does that what is the big deal.  But see with Google - that was the first time Google beat estimates since 2013.  So what did that do to Google stock - well it shot up 15% in one day - for the biggest one-day gain ever with regards to market cap with a market cap jump of 65 Billion dollars - beating the old record previous held by you guessed it Apple when it saw its stock jump 46.4 Billion dollars in a single day back in April 2012.

So Will Apple stock jump like Googles - if Apple exceeds earnings - no definitely not - as I said - Apple beating estimates is not news - it is expected.  Yes - I know it sounds funny to say it is expected for Apple to exceed expectations.  It is definitely not expected for them to meet or fall short of expectations - that is the only way for Apple to really move the stock - and that is not the movement we want to see - unless you are sitting on cash waiting for apple to drop to jump in.

SO HOW DID APPLE DO LAST QUARTER….

    05:34

    http://tii.libsyn.com/apple-q2-2015-quarterly-report

Remember Apples 3rd quarter happens in the 2nd quarter of the year.

Ok - Apple’s Press Release for this quarterly report was titled - Apple Reports Record Third Quarter Results - which is true  - and it is good results - but in some ways lower then was expected in one key area - we will get to that in a bit.

But first some of the big numbers.  The Record was in Revenue for the quarter.  49.6 Billion dollars vs 32.5 Billion in the year ago quarter and $58 Billion in the last quarter.

Overall Apple now has $202.8 Billion in Cash on hand up $9.3 Billion for the quarter.

Revenue up 33% year / year and Earning Per share up 45% year / year to $1.85 per share.

With 27 analyst weighing in on Apple Watch sales - they came to an average of 4.07 Million units sold last quarter - with Turley Muller with financial Alchemist guessing at 2.85 Million units for the lowest guess.  and Sundeep Bajikar with Jefferies with a guess of 5.7 Million units for the high side - and the actual revealed number is - And this would be where I play crickets chirping - as Apple is not going to say - PERIOD - they said multiple time on the call - that last September they said Apple Watch would be lumped in with Other Products - which also includes - Apple TV, iPods and Apple Branded and 3rd party accessories.  They will not - they can not - they shall not break out Apple Watch Stats - it would be wrong to do so - because back in September they said they would not - so there - in your face Uncle Gene Munster - We ain’t answering your question or something pretty close to that is how the Q & A went.

What they did say about the Other Products category is that year over year - there was an increase from 1.767 Billion dollars to 2.641 Billion dollars - and that Apple Watch sales were greater than that increase - so all we know is Apple watch sales are greater than 874 Million dollars.  If you assume an ASP for Apple Watch at $430 = that means there was at least 2 Million Apple Watches sold.  If Apple Watch revenue was 50% of the Other category - then Appel Watch sales were about 3 Million units.  The actual number is somewhere in between most likely - which means less than the 2.85 Mil units that was the lowest guess.  Or worst than every one was predicting.

Tim Cook did say that Apple watch sales were higher in the month of June then they were in the Months of April or May.  Which goes counter to what Slice said.  It is possible Apple was not counting sales of devices as a sale until they actually shipped the unit to the customer.  There was no follow up from the Analists on that point.

One thing on Monday that struck me about why Apple is likely not reporting the numbers - would be this little true story.

I went into the local Walgreens to buy my allergy medicine - my 24 pack of Wal-zyr D - which is behind the counter - and I have to show my drivers license to prove I am not a walter white wanna be.  When I paid with my Apple watch - the women working the register said that was cool - she had seen lots of people pay with an iPhone - but that was the first time she saw someone use the Apple Watch - THE FIRST TIME and it was July 20th.  That is 88 days and the FIRST apple watch that she saw where someone paid for something.  THAT IS NOT GOOD when you consider I live in the more affluent part of town in the more affluent town in the KC Metro area.  So if she is not seeing it - then it is likely not happening much if at all at other stores locally and that does not bode well for current apple watch sales.

    http://fortune.com/2015/07/13/apple-iphone-estimates-2015q3/

For iPhone sales - last episode we talked about what the Anal-ists were guessing - collectively it was an average of 49.42 Million units sold.  And the actual number was - 47.534 Mil iPhones sold for the quarter - which was 2 Million below what Anal-ists were expecting - being below wall streets estimates is not a good thing - expect some blood in streets for Apple stock over this. Which looking at after hour trading with in an hour of the news - Apple stock was down at one point over 10% - to put that in perspective that is over 75 Billion dollars in Market cap - theoretically lost in a few minutes.  It did bounce back a little later on somewhat and was down just 7% or about 52 Billion dollars in market cap reduction.  Will be interesting to see how it does once the market opens back up on Wednesday.

Per how the individual anal-ists did - Patrick Smellie with the Braeburn group was closest to the hole with a guess of 47.52 Million iPhones sold.  Kudos Patrick.

Apple did say there was a reduction in channel inventory of 600,000 units - so really iPhone sales to customers were a tad over 48 Million units.

And they did say the 35% year over year growth for iPhone sales is about triple the industry number for smartphone sales growth.

    http://fortune.com/2015/07/16/apple-ipad-watch-analysts/

The Guesses for the Anal-ists for iPad Sales are:

7.5 Million units on the low side from Lee Storch, the Braeburn Group - to 13.0 Million units on the high side from Patric Smellie the Braeburn Group and Andrew Uerkwitz - Oppenheimer.

The avg estimate was 10.71 Million units for last quarter and the one closest to the whole was?  Name and affiliation withheld by request - who nailed it - with exactly 10.9 Million units being actually sold.

That was just a tad better than the analysts average.  So no bad news on the iPad front.

Apple did also mention channel inventory decreased by 300,000 units - so iPad sales to customers was really 11.2 Million units.

And in the US - Apple had a 76%  share of Tablet sales for units $200 or more.

    http://www.computerworld.com/article/2949546/wearables/apple-

    watch-satisfaction-very-high-whiles-sales-estimates-vary.html

Future Apple Watch sales are going to be greatly impacted not by Analists predictions or talking points or reviews - but rather by Word of Mouth.  And right now the Mouths of current Apple Watch owners seems to have a smile on them when they talk about their Apple Watches.

One recent customer survey found the rates of satisfaction at 97% among Apple Watch users.  Which is higher than both the initial iPhone satisfaction numbers at 92% back in 2007 and the original iPad at 91% back in 2010.

These extremely high user satisfaction data for the Apple watch definitely bodes well for future growth of the Apple watch - as nothing trumps word of mouth marketing for growing a product line.

Per that 97% - 66% of it was people Very Satisfied and 31% of it was people somewhat satisfied.

Additionally - it seems the least technical you were - the more satisfied you were.  It seems that teachers, firefighters, insurance agents, and those not in the tech industry and not hard-core techies - these were the groups of people that couldn’t stop raving about the Apple Watch. So the right people are word of mouth marketing.

    Hi Rob,

From episode 354, the app I use for making slideshows is free, iMovie on my MacBook Pro! The newest version is really easy to use and there are loads of tutorials on YouTube or Lynda.com. I made a slideshow for my dad's 80th birthday and you can use a mix of photos and videos and even detach audio from videos you have to use for background. You can make it loop automatically.

    Hi Rob,

This is response to the other listener in ep 0355 who wanted to print directly from an iOS device but also wanted to be able to do things like resize what they're printing and all the other functionality you get using a computer. I got a $7 App called "Printer Pro" by a developer called "Readdle" that does everything I can think of wanting to do when I decide to print something on my iPhone or iPad. You can add an option to print with the app from the... up arrow box button thing menu...

Does that thing have a name? I don't even know.

The point is, it's a $7 app, which for some reason people I know think is a lot for an app, but considering how often and how long I've been using it, the cost eventually amortized out. (At least for me.)

I think there's a free version so people can try it out? But I don't think it has nearly as many useful features, it might still have the resize features.

    Regards,

    Michelle

    Hi Rob,

Guess I am the only one that likes the beta. Thought I'd say something positive. I appreciate the opportunity to be able to test things out early and to be able to know that my voice is heard if there are any bugs.

    Regards,

    Shawna

    Hi Rob,

I would like to send out a warning to people considering downloading the public beta of iOS 9. I downloaded it for my iPod touch 5th gen and my iPad Air 1st gen wifi model to see if it was stable enough for my iPhone 6. I had noticed a few bugs but for the most part it was fairly stable so I decided it was safe for my iPhone. After a few days of no issues my phones cellular data stopped working. I had to restore my phone back to iOS 8.4. Just a warning for anybody considering updating.

We are now well over 2,000 members in our Google+ community and growing.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from Mark Page who posted the following question

    Quote

What happens at the end of the Apple music free trial to music on the icloud library?  Will the icloud music library not be available to those who don't subscribe and will they have to use itunes sync?

    Unquote

In a nut shell - any music you download via Apple Music for playback offline - will be protected by DRM - Digital Rights Management - that means if you cancel - then the DRM is kicked in - and your music you downloaded via the Apple Music trial or even during a paid period - is no longer available when you cancel / or choose not to renew your subscription.  It is like with Netflix and Hulu+ - you only get access to the music from Apple Music when you are in the trial or paid period.  But once you are in neither - then anything download via Apple Music is not available.

Now if you do purchase an album outright and pay however much the Album is - then that would still be available to you.

Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Also from the Google Plus community was this post from Fred Goertzen who wrote:

My recent calls appearing on another iPhone.

About 10 days ago all of my calls started appearing on my wife's iPhone recent call history. I am not alone, there are 100's of posts on this topic on the Apple Support Community, starting in March, 2015, with no resolution.

A further bug that I haven't seen mentioned: Her Current Period Call Time shows 1 Day 2 Hours (Last Reset July 8, 2015). When I add up the individual calls, which include mine as well, its 225 minutes.

Apple is silent on this issue.

And a big thanks to Timmy T - who replied - Are  iPhone Cellular Calls set to on under face time?

To which Fred replied yes - and that he turned it off - and now all seems to be working correctly.

    http://www.macrumors.com/2015/07/21/ios-9-beta-4-tidbits/

The Quarterly Conference call - was not the only news today from Apple.  There was also the release of iOS 9 Beta 4 for devs or also known as 9b4 well at least on this episode. And this is just for Devs - and not available yet for the consumer users that are doing the public beta.

9b4 has a lot of bug fixes - but also new features.

First up - if you purchased a new iPod touch 6th gen - you can upgrade it to 9B4 - which is good news for devs - as many do buy iPod touches for doing testing for their apps.

One of those bug fixes in the beta was fixing it where the volume button works to take photos.

With the release of iOS 8.4 - there was a feature that went away - Home Sharing - This is now back with 9b4 - true to Eddy Cue’s words that it was coming back.

The Picture in Picture feature for iPads - now supports the Podcasts app - very cool.  This is for Video Podcasts.  So you can watch Happy tree friends while answering emails.

With Apple Pay - there is a new Settings Option in the Settings App for Apple Pay that allows you to turn on/off the feature where you double-click the home button to access from the home screen.

Bing Web results can now be disabled in spotlight search settings.

There were also some smaller cosmetic or minor minor changes - one that is mentioned often is the change of the Notifications icon from Grey to Red in the settings app.

    http://appleinsider.com/articles/15/07/15/rumor-apple-to-launch-

    end-of-life-ipad-mini-model-and-ipad-pro-in-2015-forego-ipad-air-3

On the rumor front - we have a couple on the iPad side - with the iPad Mini - 4th gen - or 3.5 gen - as last years iPad mini - was so sight an upgrade it is hard to call it a full gen update.  But anyway - the iPad mini 4th gen as Apple would call it - is being rumored to be the last of its line.  Meaning no more new 7.9” iPad Mini’s after this next one.

If you want to know the specs for the next iPad Mini - simply look at the specs for the iPad Air 2 - and there you go.  Except maybe with Bluetooth 4.1 and force touch.

The other rumor has to do with the iPad Pro - and that it might launch in November.  Way to go out on a limb guys.

They are also saying that because of the update to the iPad Mini and the launch of the iPad Pro - there will be no real update to the iPad Air 2.   Maybe the bump to bluetooth 4.1 and force touch - my thoughts - not theirs - but that would be it.

Per the iPad Pro - rumors are still consistent that it will have both a USB-C port and an Lightening port.  As well as NFC and Force Touch.  and Apple would be introducing a new Apple branded Bluetooth stylus.  So that probably also means Bluetooth 4.1 for it as well.

So basically we are looking at a minor if any update to the iPad Air 2,  major update to the iPad Mini - and the introduction of the iPad Pro in October / November time frame with current device updates launched in October and the iPad Pro launch in November - maybe - possibly - if it is not in another month.

    https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPod+Touch+6th+Generation+

    Teardown/44378

The folks at iFixit - got their hands on a new iPod touch 6th gen and put up some iPod touch porn on their site.

One of the interesting finds - the A8 processor is being under clocked at just 1.1 GHZ per core. Apple is doing that to save on battery life which is important at the battery is just a 1043 mAh battery - which is small by iPhone standards - but on par with the 5th gen iPod touch which had a 1030 mAh battery.

Still with less radios - there is less battery draw.

Overall they said the internals are very similar to the iPhone 6 - sans the radios needed for a Phone - but as I mentioned the camera is not on par with the iPhone 6 - and closer the iPad Air camera.

If you want to see more of the insides of the iPod touch - there is a link in the show notes.

    VOICEMAIL - Nolan_voicedream_reader_dyslexia_app

    Hello Rob,

In Tii Item 354 you made a request for a "Candy Crush" type app for your son with dyslexia.  While I can't help there, I can very strongly recommend two audiobook apps for dyslexics or anyone with visual, physical or print disabilities which prevent them from reading traditional print materials.

First "Read2Go" from Benetech is an accessible ebook reader for reading BookShare titles. The "Read2Go" app will read books downloaded from Bookshare multi-modally, allowing the user to see and hear words at the same time in a high quality text-to-speech voice.  Bookshare is a non-profit organization which opens up the world of reading for people with print disabilities offering the world’s largest collection of accessible titles.  Anyone in the world with learning disabilities, low vision or blindness, or who is unable to read standard print because of physical disabilities may qualify to join Bookshare.  Membership is provided FREE to US students and schools, and for other individuals, Bookshare membership is $50 annually with a $25 setup.  Discounted fees are available in some countries.

Once a user provides proof of disability and completes the BookShare enrollment, the Read2Go iOS app allows access to over 345,000 titles, all included in the membership.  There are no per book charges.  The Read2Go app is $19.99.

Second, "Learning Ally" is the name for both an app and a national non-profit dedicated to helping blind, visually impaired and dyslexic students succeed in education.  Like Bookshare, membership and proof of disability is required, but Learning Ally accepts Bookshare membership as proof of disability.

The "Learning Ally" iOS app is similar to Bookshare in that it reads books multi-modally; the text is highlighted as it is read by the voice.  However, Learning Ally also offers human-voice narrated books as well.  There are over 75,000 books in their library including many best-sellers and textbooks.

The Learning Ally organization offers so much more than just the app, including 1-on-1 consultations to answer your questions, a community for emotional support, advice webinars and events to build your knowledge, and of course the iOS app with human-narrated audiobooks to help adults or children read.  Learning Ally membership is $119, but they do offer fee waivers for those who qualify with application.

More information for sign-up can be found at Bookshare.org and LearningAlly.org.

I am an educator, but I'll happily admit to plagiarizing much of this email from their websites to help spread the word about these apps and organizations.  My 11 year old daughter has dyslexia and I cannot recommend these two organizations and apps highly enough.  They have made a tremendous difference to my daughter, helping to turn her from a frustrated student into a voracious reader.  We've learned that the access to information included in books, magazines and newspapers is what is really important, not whether it comes to a person through printed text or an audiobook.

I'd love to hear other listener's experiences and suggestions.  Bookshare and Learning Ally are examples of using iOS to provide "assistive technology" that comes pretty close to perfect!

    Regards,

    Geoff Selhorst

    Dear Rob,

Per your question to us who know of apps that will help your son who is dyslexic, I would like to recommend the ReadQuick app. Back when ReadQuick was made, parents of dyslexic kids were saying it was something that really helped their kids in school. Since it shows one word at a time, it lets them just focus on each piece and removes a lot of the garble that just adds complexity for them.

    best regards,

    Cody K

    Hi Rob,

In regards to apps that may be useful for your son and and his learning to work with his dyslexia...

The following app is not the answer to the app request on your last show, but it is a very useful tool for many dyslexics.  The developer is very bright, an excellent coder, and very interested in helping find solutions and useful tools for dyslexics and the visually impaired.I happen to be blind and have exchanged many many letters with the developer, Winston Chen, and am very impressed with him.

My favorite tool that he wrote is:  Voice Dream Reader

He He also developed a word processor for the ipad/iphone called:

    Voice Dream Writer

Winston also has an email app, but I use the built-in email program on my iphone and really cannot say too much about the utility of his mail client.

My father-in-law was severely dyslexic, but had parents like you who really worked with him when he was young and he eventually became an M.D. with a very successful practice.

Another useful thing to learn more about is "Learning Ally"  It used to be called Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic.  It may be worth checking with them as well.  I believe their headquarters are in Princeton, N.J.

Good luck!  With your attentiveness, your son will flourish.

    Regards,

    GM In Texas

    Hi Rob

I listened to this week's Tii podcast and heard your request for an specific type of app to help your dyslexic son. I am legally blind and subscribe to the podcast Assistive Technology Update with Wade Wingler. I listen to it to be aware of current accessibility technologies that may address my specific needs. They have a weekly feature called 'Apps Worth Mentioning' by 'Bridging Apps.org' who seem to have and evaluate apps that can help various accessibility and cognitive needs. I don't know their  products well, but you may find some apps that help add to the 'toolbox'  you're trying to create to support your son. You might also contact this '.org' for more specific information or directions to search. Good luck to you and your family in these efforts.

    Hi, Rob !

Somebody asked in an earlier episode about a Candy Crush Saga-style game with letters and words instead of candy. I think you, too, were interested in something similar. Well, King has released a game just like that. It's called Alphabetty Saga.

Thanks to all that sent in this next one - which was actually sent in from quite a few people.  And this is per the Kickstarter project called - ZNAPS - Z N A P S -  and this is basically a mag safe connector for your iPhone - finally.  When you have two boys running around the house - mag safe connectors have saved my laptop numerous times.

The goal on this was $94,221 - And to date they have raised a we bit over 1/2 a million dollars and they have until August 14th for additional funding - so congrats to them on this.

Pricing on this is about $9 US.  That gets you one Znaps connector and 1 Znaps adapter.   What you do is plug the connector into your lightening port on your iOS device - and then the the Adapter to your lightening cable - and the two then connect magnetically to charge your iPhone.  BUT WAIT there is more - They also claim it will support data synchronization as well - so it is both for charging and synching - and it just $9.  I mean how can you not fund this right.  Actually I did fund this but at the $18 level for two connectors and two adapters.

They say this will ship in November - NOT to me it will not - I was about 19,000th on the funders list.  Expect delays on this one at this point - If I have it before the end of the year I will be happy.  Heck before March 1st and I will be happy.

To find out more on this one - search for ZNAPS - Z N A P S at kickstarter dot com or in the show notes for ep 356

    Hi Rob,

In response to the guy from U.K. having problems with Siri understanding him, I don't seem to have this problem. Yes there is the odd time when Siri doesn't understand me but lately these occasions are getting fewer and far between. I must say I don't have as strong an English accent as he does but I wonder if there are many other listeners with similar issues.

But yeah I agree with the advise you gave about changing the versions of English and seeing if it makes a difference for him.

    Hi Rob,

I just listen to your lastest show and this is in reference to the caller from the UK saying that Siri does not understand him. My phone is running on the most recent update I believe it's 8.4, anyway after the update I fired up Siri to see if she would understand me better I said "this is a test to see if you understand me better" and the text that showed up on the screen simply read "San Diego" which completely perplexed me because it was such an arbitrary phrase...very strange indeed. i'm using an iPhone six and I'm from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

On watchaware podcast, someone pointed out that the one one regular button is only limited to contacts and apple pay!   Why can't it be programmed.   Reports say it's not getting used and people use Siri instead

    Regards,

    Michael

    1-1-19-runs-mobile-instead-of-root/

Thanks to Chris in London for this next one.

Which is for jailbreakers - Cydia is moving from a root level app to now running as a mobile ( or normal) type app.

How does this effect you the Jailbreak user - well now you will see some of your tweaks applied to the Cydia app - where as in the past tweaks did not effect the Cydia app.  As they say quote for example if you have a tweak installed that improves how the keyboard works in all apps - it  will now improve keyboard in Cydia as well.

They do warn that some tweaks might have issues with Cydia as the devs for those tweaks up until now did not have a chance to test them.

And they say if you have a tweak that causes Cydia to be unstable and unusable - you can fix it by booting your device with Cydia Substrate disabled.  To do this turn off your device - and turn it on while pressing the volume up button until it finishes booting - then open Cydia - uninstall the buggy tweak and reboot again the normal way to get back to normal mode.

    Hi Rob,

I updated my iPhone 6 plus to iOS 8.4 when it was released to the public, and since the update my touch screen will intermittently be unresponsive. So far to fix it, I can just put it to sleep and wake it up and it'll be fine for a little bit, but to try and resolve the issue I have restored, reset, set up as new, erased it, just everything I can think of, but it still does it, and I've researched it and found no real answer or solution until today when I found a few videos on YouTube showing either removing and cleaning the touch screen controller or replacing it, there are several cases I've read that people have had the screen replaced just to have the problem show back up after a day or so, even a few that had the unit replaced had the problem come back...I'd just like to get this info out there so more can understand what's happening to their phones if they are seeing this, I'm sure apple knows that it's a problem, it may not be effecting a huge number of units but there are quite a few out there and I feel as long as there are no signs of abuse, apple just needs to make it right and not make us jump through hoops

    Regards,

    Ronny

Hi Ronny thanks for the feedback - first I would say this DO NOT REPEAT DO NOT OPEN up your iPhone and try to clean or adjust anything if you are having this issue folks - take it to your Apple store - all the iPhone 6 and 6+ are still under a year old and covered by the Apple warranty and opening the unit and trying to clean or fix something can and likely will void your warranty.  See your local Apple store if you are seeing this.  And per the numbers seeing this - it does look to be a very very small % of people - but even a very small % of a really large number is more than a few people.  But again - don’t try to fix this yourself - see your local apple store or where ever you purchased said unit from.  When it comes to defects / issues with units under a year old - Apple is better then any other company about making good on bad units with the least amount of hassle.  All companies will have a small % of units with issues - how Apple has traditionally dealt with those issues is what sets them apart from all others.

Apple Stock since Feb 10th 2010 is 4.4 times the value today.  Not bad in 5 years. The Dow Jones during that period is up just 1.7 Times the value and a good part of that increase Apple is to thank for.   Just Sayin

Hi Rob, Well, we don't have long to wait to find out if this rumor is true. Dr. John M

And that rumor is about new iPods coming out on July 14th - missed it by that much.  They actually were announced on July 15th.  Yes - finally an update to the iPod Touch.

    05:35

    http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2015/07/15Apple-

    Introduces-The-Best-iPod-touch-Yet.html

Yes - shocking but true - Per the title of the Apple Press release - quote Apple introduces the best iPod Touch yet unquote.  Well that is a relief would not want them introducing something worse than the last version of the iPod touch.  Because you know that would make for an awkward Press Release title - Apple introduces iPod touch almost as good as the one from a couple of years ago.  Yeah - just does not work.

So what is new in the new iPod Touch - For starters - they went to the latest and greatest processors - the A8 and M8 processor and motion co-processor.

They greatly updated the Camera to an 8 MP camera - Which is not identical to any iPhone cameras - but actually is closest in specs to the camera on the iPad Air 2.  It features 2.4 aperture vs 2.2 for the 5S and later iPhones.  But it does support the 43 MP panorama - like the 6 and 6plus.

Other features it supports are Burst Mode, Slo Mo Video to 120 fps.  Again specs wise it is closest to the iPad Air 2 camera.

There are 4 different storage options - 16 GB - also known as no really you shouldn’t have version which is $199.  There is the 32 GB - known as the Well at least it is not the 16 gb version - priced at $249.  There is the 64 GB version known as the - ok now we can really start downloading apps version at $299 - and finally the 128 GB version known as the Mom and Dad are so cool version priced at $399.

You can pick from one of six colors - Silver, Gold, Space Grey - of course.  Plus Pink, Blue and Red.

All versions are available as of the 15th of July.

The screen on the iPod Touch 6th gen - is the same screen that is on the iPhone 5S and 5C.

It does have built in speaker and mic.

One spec I saw on it that was unique - Bluetooth 4.1 tech.  I could not find BT 4.1 on any other Apple products - not on the Macbook or MacBook Pros just announced Nor is it in the Apple Watch - all other new Apple products in the last year were on 4.0 for bluetooth.

It has the latest and greatest for Wifi support - for 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac

A few things missing that are surprising - No Force Touch - would have expected that.  And not touch ID and no NFC

Case / Product size is identical to the last iPod Touch - same Length, width and depth.

Again those are available now.  So if you were someone holding out for an updated iPod touch - well now is the time to go out and get one - just not the 16 GB version.

    09:17

    http://www.macrumors.com/2015/07/13/apple-releases-itunes-12-2-1/

If you have not done so - you will want to update iTunes - version 12.2.1 update is now available.

It fixes iTunes Match issues - where it incorrectly changed some songs from Matched to Apple Music.  It has some fixes for minor bugs and improvement fro Beats 1.

As with any double dot update - it is all about the bugs man.

    09:42

    https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/

Apple has now released the Beta of iOS 9 to non-Devs.

Remember folks - this is still a beta version - that means if you are someone the depends on your iPhone for work - stay away.  This is just for those that don’t mind and can live with some wonkyness - So again - only install the beta if you do not rely on your iOS device for work.

I will have a link for the signup in the show notes for ep 355.

I wish I could say for you to call into the show - 206-666-6364 or email into the show - today in iOS at gmail dot com - but since it is a beta - that would be wrong - so yeah don’t call in and give feedback - at least not with your real name.

And as always definitely - 100% be sure to back up your device before even thinking of getting the beta installed.

So the UK now has Apple Pay. Hope it isn't too long before Australia gets it

    Brisbane

Congrats to the folks in the UK - whom now have Apple Pay available for you.  Currently the banks that support Apple Pay in the UK are

    American Express

    MBNA

    Nationwide

    NatWest

    Royal Bank of Scotland

    Santander

    and

    Ulster bank

    Coming soon list includes

    Bank of Scotland

    First Direct

    Halifax

    HSBC

    Lloyds Bank

    M&S bank

    TSB

    and

    Barclays

It looks like over 250,000 shops - points of presence will support Apple Pay right now in the UK.  Including McDonalds, Subway, Transport of London, BP, Marks & Spencer and more.

One thing to point out is that Transport of London has warned riders that they need to make sure their iPhone or Apple Watch has enough charge to make it the whole journey - if you iPhone or Apple Watch dies during the journey you will be hit with a penalty to charge you the maximum fare.  So check your battery status before paying with Apple pay when using Transport of London mass transit.

And We are very happy to have Casper back as a sponsor - Casper is an online retailer and manufacturer of Premium mattresses for a fraction of the price you are used to paying.

Have you ever purchased a mattress by sitting on it for just a few minutes at the store only later to regret it.  That happened with us for my Oldest son's mattress.  We thought we purchased a good mattress - but oh my - we learned we did not - we would lay down with him to get him to go to sleep and as we tried to get up he would hear us and feel us moving and would wake up - very very frustrating. But we were stuck with the Mattress -  However With Casper you get a 100 day risk free trial period.  You don't like it you get your money back and they come and pick it back up and donate it to a charity.  That said - the mattress they sent is great and is definitely not going back. It is a mix of Latex foam and Memory foam. No noisy springs to wake up your kid or significant other when you get up to sneak some girl scout cookies from the pantry.

Casper did an incredible job on the engineering and feel of this mattress - the nights I record episodes - the boys go and sleep with mom - so when I am done I can sleep on his bed now and my back is not all out of whack in the morning.

But just as important as quality is Pricing and the pricing is really great.   Twin Mattresses are just $500, they also have Twin XL for $600, Full for $750, Queen for $850 and then King and Cal King - for  $950.  That is less than half the price my Parents paid for their King sized mattress and they can't stand their mattress.  Like I said you have 100 days to return it risk free. And if you go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code tii - you will save $50 off those prices.

This is an american made mattress with delivery right now for the US and Canada only and it is free delivery. When said mattress is delivered - it is from UPS - in a squarish box that you think no way is there a mattress in there - But you get a cool little tool to cut open the package and the mattress opens up and expands to form.

As they say You spend 1/3 of your life in bed - ok maybe more if you have Apple TV with Netflix and HBO NOW in bedroom.  And for the cost of an iPad - is it not worth getting the best nights sleep possible - and that is what you will get with Casper or what your kids will get.  Again to Save $50 off of the prices I mentioned go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code t i i - all lower case on the promo code.  again casper dot com / tii - promo code tii to save $50 - thanks Casper for the great mattress for my son and for sponsoring this show.

    VOICEMAIL - PAUL_BT_Headsets_Paired

    Rob

I'm using BT headsets that can pair simultaneously with 2 different devices. Mostly use them with my iPhone & iPad - most of the newer BT headsets now will say on description if they can simulaneously pair. My most used ones are Jabra Rox 2.5 for stereo and a RoadKing RK400 for long-battery-life calling on road trips. Each can pair with both devices and multitask audio as long as each stream is different. Meaning listen to stereo from one device while using voice calling or voice memo on another device. No simultaneous dual stereo streaming though two devices at same time.

    Regards

    PaulG in Lawrenceville GA

    Hi Rob,

For the caller who was asking about simultaneously pairing a bluetooth headset to more than 1 device:

I do not have an Apple Watch, but my Plantronics Legend bluetooth headset will simultaneously pair with both my iPhone and my iPad.  You can’t listen to audio from both devices at the same time, but one will interrupt the other. For example, if I am listening to your podcast and I get a notification on my iPad (such as an email notification sound or calendar alarm sound, etc.) the podcast audio from the phone will be not be heard while the notification from the iPad plays over the headset.  When the notification sound from the iPad finishes, you hear the podcast audio from the phone again.  Note: the audio on the phone does not stop so you may miss a few words while the audio from the iPad overrides it.

I’m not sure if this is what the caller was looking for , but I though I would offer what I found.

    Regards,

    Steve

    Hi Rob,

I was just listening to the show Released on 07/09 and there was a visually impaired gentleman who wanted to connect both his iPhone and his Apple Watch to one Bluetooth headset. Normally, yeah, you can't connect two devices to one Bluetooth accessory, and I don't know of any headsets that do this. However, there is a company called Rapoo that makes Bluetooth speakers that will connect to two devices simultaneously so both devices can queue up songs. I know that's not the type of accessory or the use case he was looking for, but it might be a good jumping off point if he still hasn't found anything.

    Regards,

    Michelle

    Hi Rob,

Per the question about pairing a Bluetooth headset with more than one device. I have a Plantronics Voyager headset which supports the simultaneous pairing and use with two devices. So either my iPhone and iPad or iPhone and Mac can be paired and active at the same time. I have the Voyager Pro which is a few years old. It works very well. The headset remembers the last two paired devices when turning on and pairs with them when in range. The voice prompt calls them device one and two when successful. The only thing I don’t like about the Pro is that when using it for turn by turn directions with my iPhone, there is a short lag when the phone speaks and the headset wakes up. So the beginning of the direction is cut off. For phone calls, music and any other continuous audio it is great. The noise cancellation microphone is still the best I have found even though this model is years old. It is a big headset but very comfortable and 6 hour talk time so it is designed for extensive daily use.

The Voyager Legend is current and lists the dual device feature too but I haven’t had hands on to see if the experience is any different.

    Regards,

    Steve from Orange California.

    Hi Rob,

On the last show, someone, Henrique?, was looking for ways to free up more disk space.

My 16 GB iPhone 5S is perpetually nearly full. I use Memory and Disk Scanner Pro. I run it about once a week and it usually frees up about 1/2 GB of disk space. It is only 99 cents in the App Store.

    Regards,

    Mudslide Matt S.

    Winston-Salem NC

    Hi Rob

When you are in "My Music", select Playlists from the topmost menu. Then touch the title "Playlists" that you will see in the middle of your screen (between "Edit" and "New"). That will pop up a box at the bottom - and among the choices will be "Apple Music Playlists".

Create a new Playlist and then name it.  Then click "Add Music" and click the Search Music box at the top. After you do that, a couple of choices appear directly below the search line - one is "My Music" and the other is "Apple Music". Just as a test, I chose to search for Paul Simon and added songs I've never purchased nor imported from any source.

Be patient because this is a bit different from the way you built playlists from music already stored on your device. In the old way, iOS is just setting pointers to the item - here, it must use your iCloud account to load the permissions for Apple Music.

    Regards,

    PaulG from Lawrenceville, GA

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from Daniel Massam who posted the following question

    Quote

Any one know if the 3month apple music trial is from the date you start the trial, or does everyone get the same 3 month trial from when it was first launched?

Holding out on my spotify trial, and wondered if I'll get the full free months when I switch to apple music?

And a few people replied back that the 90 day free period starts on the day you sign up - not per the day Apple Music launched.  Thanks Stan, Gary and Blair

Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

So how is Apple doing with the iOS 8.4 uptake - well back on the 8th barely a week after its release - iOS 8.4 had already had 41.2% of the iOS users updated to iOS 8 and by the 15th that number was already over 50%.  This according to numbers from MixPanel.com that is an analytics company - which claims to have 10’s of billions of records of iOS users to apps that have their tools installed.

Obviously getting to 50% this fast is great news for Apple and also for developers.  Nice to see that many users that quickly go to the new version of the OS.

Thanks to Dr. John for this next one.

Which is an article in Business Insider titled - A significant group of consumers are ditching Android for the iPhone.

The article talked about a survey from CLSA - which is a banking and investment firm - in that survey it found that 53% of respondents has switched from Android to an iPhone

But only 4% of Android phone owners switched from iOS to Android.

It also found that 32% of Android users who plan to get a new smartphone in the next 12 months - plan to get an iPhone.

And 54% of all survey respondents who plan to buy a smartphone in the next 12 months - plan on buying an iPhone.

Apple has released two new ads - with the theme around both  being - if it’s not an iphone, It’s not an iPhone.

I watched both - and the tone and temperament of both reminded a lot - I mean a lot of an old Parody Apple Ad from 4 years ago called

So much so were these ads similar - that I did a mashup of them - and well you can hear now what you get when you combine all three.  Kind of hard to tell what is real and what is parody.

You have to imagine someone who created the new Apple ads - saw that original parody ad - Just Sayin.

    http://fortune.com/2015/07/13/apple-iphone-estimates-2015q3/

On Tuesday of next week - the 21st - Apple will have their quarterly conference call - where they will go over among other things - how many iPhones were sold last quarter.

As always Philip Elmer DeWitt puts together a list of guesses from the indie and pro analysts out there.

The Highest guess for iPhone sales - comes from Kulbinder Garcha, with Credit Suisse with a guess of 56.28 Million iPhones sold for the last quarter.   Lowest guess is Andrew Uerkwitz with Oppenheimer with a guess of 43.50 Million units sold.

Last quarterly report - Robert Paul Laitao of the Braeburn Group was closest to the pin with his guess of iPhone sales.  This time he is guessing 51.1 Million iPhones sold.  Which is right in the middle of the range I was thinking - which is 50 to 52 million units - but if forced to pick a specific number 51.0 million would be my guess.

    27:57

    http://fortune.com/2015/07/07/apple-watch-estimates-analysts/

So how many Apple Watches did Apple sell last quarter - well we will likely not find out.

But incase we do - some of the Analists made their guess known.

The high comes from Sundeep Bajikar, Jefferies with a guess of 5.70 mil - and often Wrong Gene Munster with a guess of 3 mil on the low side.

    28:19

    http://venturebeat.com/2015/07/14/apple-could-announce-

    10m-apple-watches-sold-when-it-reports-earnings-on-july-21/

As I said on the last show - Apple does need to release some numbers if they want to keep people from guessing about numbers - Past and current.

I have seen some other estimates out there with highs of 10 Mil and lows of 2 mil - safe to say no one really has any clue.

    28:39

    http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-92-percent-profits-

    entire-smartphone-industry-q1-samsung-2015-7

But regardless if Apple watch sales are 2 Mil units or 10 mil or any where in between or even a little higher - it does not matter for devs - because when you think about it - there are over 1 Billion iOS devices out there.  Getting devs excited about 2 million or 10 million vs over 1 Billion - it does even come close.

Additionally Apple is likely feeling no pressure from investors to talk about numbers on the Apple Watch Hobby - as the real butter - is on the iPhone side - and some numbers for smartphones for Q1 were just released.  In Q1 Apple was responsible for just 18.3% of the global smartphone sales.  But that netted them 92% of the global smartphone profits.

But still it would be nice to have some numbers - if they are good to shut up the android fan boys looking to bash us about anything they can.

    http://www.macrumors.com/roundup/iphone-6s/

At my presentation for KFEST - one part is I went over my best guess as of right now on the specs of the next gen iPhones.  Here is what I think will be new vs the current 6 and 6+.

The Processor will be upgraded to the A9 with the 14 NM process.

Processor speed will see its first real jump in a couple of years to 1.7 GHz.  RAM will also jump up to 2GB.

Video Recording will finally support 4K video.

Battery life will increase across the board with 3G talk time on the 6+ going from 24 to 26 hours.

The Camera will finally see a bump up to 12 MP - and it will use the LinX low profile camera module - which gives dSLR quality photos.  This will also mean the Camera lens will now be flush with the case.

    Force Touch will be added.

The M9 Motion Co-Processor will be added.

The Case will be the same basic design as the 6 / 6+.   Except it will use stronger aluminum to make it tougher to bend.  And there will be a new Rose Gold color that will be an edition version.  Think $5,000 to $15,000 or more version.

    And Bluetooth 4.1

So those are my current rumors that I think have the highest probability of happening.

    32:28

    http://appleiph0ne.com/2696350-11813467

The rumor mill is starting to report that Apple is ordering a record number of components leading up the 6S and 6S+ release this fall.  That does make sense - as I have stated in the past - S level updates tend to be the better updates per what changes on the inside.  I have been grading the updates each year - and the lowest scoring update since the 3GS came out was the iPhone 6 and 6+ - yet it was the highest selling iPhone.  Imagine what will happen if Apple does release a version with dSLR equivalent photo capability.

Right now the rumor mill is saying 85 to 90 million units is what Apple is planning for for Q4 this year.

    33:08

    http://9to5mac.com/2015/05/13/fixing-apple-watch-problems/

One thing I said at the KFEST conference when talking about the Apple watch and I think this is important - is that the Watch OS - is really not Version 1 - it is more like a beta - and that the real true power of the Apple watch will not be known until devs get a chance to develop native apps for it when Watch OS 2 comes out.

That is when you will start to see more of the Apple Watch potential.  So regardless of what is said or not said on Tuesday with regards to Apple watch numbers - how people feel about the Apple watch today is going to change as the software gets better and new - native apps get out to us.  Until then - for me at least the Apple watch is a nice accessory for my iPhone that lets me answer calls anywhere in my house and quickly reply to texts.

Seems all those Android Fan boys are talking a little softer these days.  As sammy now for last almost two years has been reporting year over year declines in Revenue and profits.

This past quarter they also came in under their forecasts and analyst forecasts.

    Hello Rob,

How big memory wise are the Pages, Numbers, Keynote Apps. It seems every so often they get updated to a staggering 200+ mb. My question is ... Is the individual app size increasing and adding to what is was with each new update?

    Regards,

    ReyLuca from Sunny El Segundo

Hi ReyLuca - if you go into the Settings App - Then General - Then Usage - then Manage Storage - you can see the size of the apps you have installed and any associated files / docs for them.

Keynote is currently a little over 540 MB, Pages is over 390 MB, and Numbers almost 380 MB.  These are big apps.  Over 1GB just for those 3.  And yes they are getting bigger - but maybe soon they will be much smaller - that is where App thinning will come in to play - where you in the future will be downloading not the generic same for all iOS device version of Keynote - but rather the one optimized for the iOS device you are on.  That means lots of the images that are sized for other devices will not be needed and that should and will save lots of space for many apps.  And these three clearly need some thinning.  But then I am in a glass house there throwing stones.

    Hey Rob,

My wife is looking for a good printer app for her iPad Air 1st Gen with the specific feature of being able to resize/scale an image directly on her iPad (as you would in the printing options on your MacBook) and print it out directly from her iPad to our Epson XP-200. Hope you or the audience can help.

    Hi Rob,

So a weird thing has happened twice: I wake up my iPad mini and the lock screen goes nuts acting like a passcode is repeatedly being put in incorrectly without me even touching the screen. The only thing I can do to stop it is to hold down the sleep/wake button to turn it off.

Anybody else see this or know what the deal is?

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/silentpocket/silent-

    pocket-leather-goods-that-take-you-off-the

A little over 4 years ago - I had the idea for a portable Faraday Cage for your iPhone - This would be a case that when your iPhone was in it - no signals could get in or out.  Taking the phone instantly off the grid.  I called it the Tin Foil Case - in honor of the Jerry Fletcher character in Conspiracy Theory and his use of Tin Foil.  I even submitted this to Kickstarter and had it approved - but me and the person I was going to work with Bob - both had too much going on and it never moved forward.

I mention this now - because there is currently a kickstarter project now 4 years+ later that is going to bring this to market.  Their product is called Silent Pocket - leather goods that take you off the grid.

They have a goal of $25,000 and you have until August 13th at 10:02 CT to fund this.

Their design I have to say is simpler then what we were going for.  It is a leather pouch for each product you want off the grid that inside has an internal metal mesh for the shielding that when closed - they have a magnetic RF seal.  nice design.

They have multiple sizes to choose from for simple RFID cards - to iPhone 6 and 6+ and even for iPad Mini.

Pricing for the smaller units starts at $29 for the smaller card wallet.  They have a passport version for $35, The $79 version is the one for the iPhone 6 / 6+

The one for $99 will work for iPad Mini and iPad Air 2.

And they have some other version above that.

So if you are someone like Jerry Fletcher - and looking for a way to get off the grid - this case will work for you.

Good luck Aaron and the rest of his team.  Guess maybe 4 years ago we should have put more time and effort into this.

If you want more info on this search for Silent Pocket - two words at kickstarter dot com or in the show notes for ep 355 at today in iOS dot com.

Thanks to Michael for this next one

Which is another Kickstarter project - this one is called Power Tube - your smart, portable and powerful phone battery.

Goal on this one was $10,000 - they have raised over $24,000 on this - so it is funded - and you have until August 12th at 10:14 PM to get in on this if you want to.

So what is this other than another external battery pack.  Well it has a built in charging cord, it has a selfie shutter and keynote slide controller and they have an app to see what level of charge it has and the battery temperature, battery location and distance.

Pricing on this is $34 for one or $57 for two.

Michael pointed out the creators of this have shipped another successful kickstart project which he has received.  So that is always good to hear.

If you are interested in learning more about this one - search for Power Tube - two words at kickstater or in the show notes for ep 355

    http://daringfireball.net/2015/07/safari_content_blocker_imore

John Grubber over at Darring fireball - reported on an article from Dean Murphy who was writing about his experience using a content blocker for safari on iOS 9.

He looked at the site iMore - and with no content blocked the site had 38 3rd party scripts running this caused the home screen to take a total of 11 seconds to open.

After turning off all 3rd party scripts the homepage took 2 seconds to load.

Apples Content blocker - which really should be called what it is - A blocker of scripts meant to track you and stay with you as you move from site to site - when this is out -next year - and people see how fast the internet can be when onerous scripts are removed - they will want to use it all the time.  Which means sites are going to need to figure out other ways to monetize and to do it where it does not impact site load performance.

This is one of those features that iOS user will love - and Google would never do - as well many of those scripts it will be blocking go back to google for tracking for ad networks.  Note this will not kill website advertising - just change it to make it more user friendly - so that a webpage that should be <500 kb to load is not coming in at over 10 MB - as was seen by Dean Murphy.

By the way - this is not about singling out iMore - they are just a typical site.  There are many worse - sadly.

Lots of questions on how to get your Playlists back if you don’t plan on using Apple Music -

It is actually pretty simple - go to Settings - scroll down to Music - then go to the Option Show Apple Music - and turn that toggle off.

    That is it.

So if you are like me and just want to have your music you ripped from your CD’s or purchased from iTunes - and your play lists - and you are not looking at Apple music at this time - Toggle that switch and all is right in the world again with your music app.

    Hi Rob,

A couple of weeks ago, I finished writing a book called Watching Without Looking: A VoiceOver User's First Month with the Apple Watch. It describes my first month using the watch with VoiceOver, and it includes tips on setting up the watch, using VoiceOver, customizing watch faces, and more. It also includes a list of resources people can use to learn more. I'm self-publishing, rather than offering it through the iBooks store, to keep the cost down; it's at http://watchingwithoutlooking.wordpress.com, and it costs US$10. I would appreciate it if you mentioned this to fellow Tii listeners.

I was wondering if you know of an app which would allow me to view what the iPod touch is seeing through my iPhone or iPad. Second question, do you or anyone else know if I can connect the two devices with a wifi router or range extender. Hey if I can get to work I'll send you pics and/or videos! Finally, thank you for all you and your listeners do. I have been inspired in countless ways.

    Hi Rob,

Wondering if you or any of your listeners know if Apple Music supports public playlists? This is one of my favourite features in Spotify, whereby you can enter a genre, artist or description (e.g. "Horror Movie Soundtracks from the 80's"), and Spotify would provide a number of user-generated playlists which you could subscribe to. Best of all, when the user updates their playlist, it also updates on your device.

    Hi Rob,

I am writing about an issue I am facing with sending bulk email to a group of contacts.

As you know in IOS you have to take the group members one by one, which is not convenient if you have to send quickly emails to a group of persons especially when you have an urgent notification to send to colleagues while you are half asleep in the middle of the night.

Is there any workaround or dedicated app for this?

    Regards,

    Ridha

Hi Ridha - there is the MailChimp Editor App for iPad and there is the Constant Contact App - I have not personally used either and both I believe require you have a paid account with those services.  There is another app - mentioned on a couple of episodes some time ago - Mailshot Pro App - this one is $3.99 - that would be my suggestion if your groups are under 100 people.

    http://www.redmondpie.com/9-jailbreak-tweaks-apple-killed-in-ios-9/

As we have said in the past - the Jailbreak world is where Apple goes to get ideas on what is possible and workable for new features.  And then Apple either “borrows” as-is those ideas or improves upon them or tweaks them slightly.

As expected there are a few jailbreak tweaks that get sunset with iOS 9.

Apples news Picture in Picture on the iPad kills off VideoPane JB tweak.

The tweak SearchSettings - allowed you to do a search in settings - which as we mentioned earlier is now in iOS 9.  Hopefully it worked better than iOS 9’s search.

The JB App swipeselection is now killed on the iPad by your ability in iOS 9 to drag two fingers over the keyboard and move your cursor around.

ShowCast JB tweak - which well showed the case on the keyboard - is now killed by that ability in iOS 9.

Apples new Low Power Mode - kills off the App BattSaver

The ReachApp - jailbreak tweak allows for split-Screen multitasking - now that is available on the iPad in iOS 9.

Those are just 6 Jailbreak Apps / tweaks killed with iOS 9.  If you noticed a favorite or semi favorite JB App or Tweak - that is no longer going to be needed when iOS 9 comes around - give me a call or send me an email to let me know what it is or was.

    http://www.computerworld.com/article/2947719/apple-ios/smarthome-

    vendors-feel-homekit-pain.html

Jonny Evans had a post this past week over at Computer world that was titled - Smarthome Vendors feel home kit pain.

He starts off saying that Homekits plans for a roll out are being effected by manufacturers reluctance or competence with regards to providing a solution that is secure enough to meet Apples standards.  So to date that is why so few have been given the Apple stamp of approval.

Seems some of the manufacturers are complaining that they don’t want to use the Apple approved chip sets and special firmware.  Guess for them this whole security thing - is just kind of optional.  Except that Apple is really concerned about that.

So to sum up - many manufacturers want to get access to Apples large and affluent ecosystem - but they don’t like the rules apple put in place - rules Apple put in place to protect the users in its ecosystem.

Kudos to Apple for standing their ground - and for the Manufacturers - complaining about Apple’s standards and requirements -

You can't get it from AT&T store inventory either. However, you can go into an AT&it store and they will place the order for you if you prefer. Just thought I'd let everyone know.

    Hi Rob,

I have a question about the music app. First I have Spotify. It was free. Then I bought the $.99 3 month subscription as they want you to try it. I am amateur  DJ working my way up to maybe be a pro. Now I can use Spotify to make my mix for party's they give me the beats per minute and other info DJ use when mixing. when I use dj apps and a mixing board from my iPhone iPad or laptop I get my music from Spotify. It even gives suggestions on what may go well in my mix. It saves the list so I can go back at another party and use what worked good with out having to search again. So my question is

will Apple let us use the music app like Spotify. If it will I would love to move over.  I think if they let us use the whole music store to stream from as well then Apple has more music. I saying this because They got exclusive like Beatles, AC/DC, and Taylor Swift. That just a few names. If it all up for listening then I think they will win me over. I think I all so heard they letting you look at music videos to.  So can you use Apple music app in DJ apps. I hope so.

I enjoy hearing about all the apps mentioned at the start.  Hearing devs explain their own apps makes it feel more personal and genuine.  I checked out the app you mentioned last week called "Silk ASMR".  I had never heard of ASMR and now I've discovered a fascinating new app that helps me to fall asleep.

So don't change a thing, it helps me to discover new and useful apps.

I clicked the iTunes review from American Giant and marked it as not helpful, I hope others do the same.

    Regards,

    Andy

After last weeks show - I quietly walked into my bedroom - grabbed my pillow and then went down to my sons casper bed - knowing he was in my bed - only to have an want want wahhh moment - as My Wife and him had gone down to his bed because he was having trouble falling asleep.  That Casper Bed spoils him. Hopefully tonight I get my chance with the casper bed.   And a big thanks again to Casper dot com for their support of Tii - and if you go to casper.com slash tii - and use promo code tii - all lower case - you will save $50 off a mattress shipped right to your door - again go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code tii.

And Before we go today I want to remind you to send in your feedback to the show - 206-666-6364 - that 206-moon-dog - or record your feedback and email it to the show at today in iOS at gmail dot com - The  feedback can be a question or comment per something someone said on this episode or it can be a question or rant you have about something else.  An App or product review - good or bad - as long as it is iOS related - it is welcomed.  I am always looking for new Artwork to feature that you created on an iOS device - just put some Tii branding on it and send it in.  And of course we are always looking for more music created on an iOS device to play on the show.  This is your show and your feedback is greatly desired.

And don't forget to check out our Moderated Google Plus community by going to todayinios dot com slash community.

Finally there is the Tii App which is Free to you.  Search for Tii in the iTunes App Store - it is the best way to consume the show and to get push notifications each time a new episode of Tii is released.  It is fully Voiceover friendly of course.  Please go right now and download the Tii App and Did I mention it is free.

And that folks is going to do it for us today -

    Hi Rob,

I created this song called KLINGON ENGINEERING with the App Korg Gadget - and the track was "mastered" (using the term very loosely) within Audioshare using the inter-app audio apps AUFX:Peak EQ, AUFX:Push generic:subtle preset

This is from my Album Orbiting Moodswings where all the songs were created on iOS devices.  You can find my music by searching for Spectral Sevenths two words in Spotify.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote ““There’s no doubt that the iPad is a slick, sexy device, but I don’t think it will be an overwhelming success. In the end, I think that the iPad will eventually be regarded much like Apple TV – a product that Jobs should have left on the drawing boards.”

Donovan Colbert, Tech Republic, 23 February 2010

In Apples Q1 of 2013 - Apple had over 10 Billion dollars in Revenue for the iPad ALONE.  $10 Billion - 1 quarter.  To Put that in perspective - That Same Quarter Google had a total of 14.4 Billion for all of Google Revenue.  I think it is safe to say $10 Billion in one quarter is not bad for something that should have been left on the drawing board Just Sayin

I mentioned early a big thank you to those that wrote reviews in iTunes - One down side with asking people write reviews is as a podcaster you tend to then look at other reviews for your show - which is not something I recommend to podcasters - especially if you have thin skin. One I read for Tii from mid june was where the person said they listened and the first 6 minutes was all ads.  I just wanted to scream - out side of the short this show is brought to you by the first 6 minutes is about Apps people use to create Artwork and music - and Free mentions for Apps that people are giving away to listeners - Yes the promo code give away segment is a free service I offer to Developers - so that you can get a chance for paid apps for free.  It is Frustrating when a review is just plan WRONG - You don’t like my voice or cadence - that I can respect - maybe I am too snarky for some or too fan boyish or not fan boyish enough - again opinions - I respect that - but to get it wrong.  If anyone wants to write a review to let AmericanGiant know how wrong they were - it would be appreciated - also click it was not helpful for their review while you are there.  I am proud of my first 6 minutes of my show normally - with other shows covering the tech space you are still in introductions 6 minutes in - Where as at Tii I hope in the first 6 minutes to have gone over multiple apps and examples of what those apps can do.  But I digress and I totally ruined the first 6 minutes of this episode for any new listeners - sorry.  Ok - I think I need to redeem one of those Silk ASMR promo codes.

Now lets get into some of the good stuff.

Last episode we looked at some of the differences between iOS 8.4 and iOS 9 Beta 2 - 9B2

This week we will go through most of the other changes in the settings app. Starting up at iCloud

First up is in the settings for icloud - Passbook is now called Wallet.

A change in Mail Contacts Calendars - is under contacts there is a new option called - Contacts found in mail - it is on by default - but if you turn it off quote Turning this off will delte any unconfirmed contact suggestions and prevent suggestions from appearing in Mail autocomplete, on the incoming call screen and in the contacts app. unquote

In the notes setting there is a new option New Notes start with - and you can choose - Title or Heading or Body - by default it is set to Body.

In the Settings for Safari - one change is Passwords & Autofill - are now split into two different items.  By the way if you ever want to see what you saved as a password for a site - this is where you go.  For example in 8.4 you go to passwords and autofill - then tap on saved passwords - enter your pin - and you will see the list of sites you have saved passwords for - and then tap on any to see the username and password you saved for that site.  Which comes in handy if you are using a new device and can’t remember what that password was.

Again in iOS 9b2 - the passwords part is on its own.

One new addition for options in 9b2 is Frequently visited sites with the option to turn it off or on - it is on by default.

Under Photos & Cameras - in 9B2 - the section for Slideshow - is no longer there.  I have not found it anywhere else - and as I mentioned before - search in settings - yeah - not helpful.  Maybe this is something they will add back later on with more features.  or not.

I should point out in iBooks - there are now settings for Audiobooks - this is where you can change the skip forward and also the skip back time.  By default both are at 15 seconds.  but either individually can be set to 10, 15, 30, 45 or 60 seconds.

In the Podcasts App settings - there is a new option called Custom Colors - where if turned on - which it is by default - it will allow custom colors based on the artwork for each podcast.  If you have issues with colors - you can switch it off here.

iTunes U settings are no longer in iOS 9 beta.

And that wraps up the side by side changes in the Settings app for 8.4 vs 9 Beta 2.

I do have one comparison for 8.4 vs Beta 3 and that is in the Music app - which I skipped above because well it was not in 9b2 - but it is in 9b3 - and there is actually one feature in the 9b3  not in 8.4 music settings  and that is a toggle for high quality on cellular - which by default is switched off.  As apple says in the note for this option - when you switch it on - Quote Always stream music at the highest quality.  This will use more cellular data and songs may take longer to start playing unquote

    13:04

    http://9to5mac.com/2015/07/08/whats-new-beta-3-el-capitan-

    ios-9-watchos-2/

Sadly iOS 9 beta 3 only came out today so I only have had time to get my two devices updated to beta 3 and to check the settings app for music and well let the kids play with it to see if their key apps still worked and they did.  I will play with it more this week and report back anything I find interesting with this beta or maybe a little at the end of the show if I have time.

A quick scan of the Apple blogs finds the following items are new or changed in 9b3 vs 9b2

The biggest is Apple News App is now included. Again more on this later or likely next episode.

There is now a dedicated selfie folder in photos - and a dedicated screenshots folders.

These two join the other stock folders - Cameral Roll, Videos, and recently deleted.  And depending on the device - Panoramas, Slo-mo, and Bursts.  And if you have any favorited - Favorites as well.

Siri no longer makes her classic ding sound when you activate her - now it just vibrates the iPhone if you have the mute switch set for screen rotation lock function.  Note for the iPad 3rd gen - Siri still makes the sound - it is just with the iPhone it is not making that sound.

Folders on the iPad are now 4 x 4 instead of the traditional  3 x 3 you get with iOS 8.4.   Honestly for the iPad why can’

    t they be 5 x 5 - I mean it could easily be 5 x 5 and still look good.

In the Mail app when you swipe to do an action - there are new icons for the options - more / flag / delete or archive depending on how you have it set.

One other new feature I have seen a few mention but am not seeing myself is when you swipe down for search - There is a new section called Siri Suggestions - which will show you are row of 4 apps Siri is suggesting - this is supposedly based on where you are and when it is and how what you normally would open then and there.

Maybe it knows when you are at home during the week and it is around 7:30 AM - you are getting ready to leave to drive for work - so it may show the Podcasts App and your favorite traffic app.

So I guess if you start dating someone new - that first Friday night you are with them around 11:00 PM swipe down and if it shows the Tinder App, Snap Chat and the Uber App - that person may be a player - just sayin.

Of course if you do that with your Mom's iPhone - and you see those apps pop up - Yeah - Awkward.

When you look at iOS 9 Beta 3 and all that is new - this is really the Beta you have been waiting for - and likely will be the one they open to the public.  With Apple Music and the News App - that is major.  If you are a dev that was waiting to update to the beta - now is a good time.  So far it is seeming stable for a beta.  Again I will talk more about iOS 9 Beta 3 on the next episode - and will go through some of the stock apps and will compare some differences in those. Not just with the settings.

    17:04

    http://www.marketwatch.com/story/apple-watch-

    may-not-be-ticking-with-customers-2015-07-07

I have had a couple of people suggest I should pull back on hounding Apple to report numbers for Apple Watch.  But one of the things I said would happen if they did not - is now happening - Anal-ists are starting to assume the worst and starting to greatly reduce their projections for Apple Watch sales.

There is an Article in Market Watch with the title - Apple Watch Sales Plunge 90%.

This article is basing this obviously not from Apple Sales numbers - as there are none.  But from the previously mentioned company Slice Intelligence.  Slice says by their data - Apple Sold about 1.5 Million Apple Watches in the first week of availability - or about 200,000 per day. By the end of June for a 7 day moving average they were seeing that number down to 20,000 per day.

What Slice is basing its numbers on is electronic receipts sent to millions of email addresses following purchases.

So my question is this - are they only looking at receipts for online purchases?  It would seem by the end of June many Apple stores had Apple Watches in stock - so it was probably switching over from an online order / wait / get apple watch shipped to you.  To a walk in an Apple store try on - and then buy at that moment type purchase.

That combined with an obvious drop off in sales after the initial release are probably both contributing to the decline.

Again until Apple gives numbers - it is anyone’s guess - and sadly lots of people are paid to guess.

And the bad part with people now guessing low - and why I even talk about these stories on sales - is without Apple giving numbers - the only reality in the numbers is what the Anal-ists make for their guesses - and if their guesses are low - much lower than reality - then some devs are going to say - you know what - right now it does not make sense to add Apple Watch support for such a small potential user base.

So Mr. Cook - if you want to rally the troops - on July 21st during the quarterly conference call - give us the real numbers. Give the devs something to get excited about. That is if there is actually something for them to get excited about.

Daniel Eran Dilger with Apple Insider - has his own very detailed and lengthy take on the Slice data - what it means, does not mean and more.

The title of his post is Collapsing sales report actually shows Apple is crushing smartwatch sector.   Once again I and Daniel would not need to go into these detailed rebuttals of Click bait article de-jur - if Apple would release some real numbers - just sayin

    motion-controller-with-apple-tv-game-2015-6

Hi Rob, Sounds cool. And now it's free! Can't wait to try it on WatchOS 2 Dr. John M

And what Dr. John is talking about is that a dev has a way to turn the Apple Watch into a video game controller.

In this case it is the dev company Rolocule - and they have a bowling game for the Apple TV that uses the Apple watch to act like a wii Motion controller - and it is paired to the game running on and iPhone and uses Airplay to display on the Apple TV.

The App is called Bowling Central and will be updated with the Apple Watch controller support when Apple rolls out Watch OS 2 in the fall.

The game is free right now - previously it was $2.99 - so you might want to download it now while it is still free.

Again that App is Bowling Central - two words.

    Hi Rob,

I note one difference between 8.3 and 8.4. Now; when I use Siri to create

a reminder she simply creates it. Previously, she would present her

interpretation of what I wanted and ask me whether or not she should create

    it.

    Regards,

    Kevin Barry

    Hello Rob,

I am watching Podcaster's roundtable Ep 31.  I would mention the Hindenburg app, it comes for the iOS and as a desktop program.  I am starting to use Bossjock but needed a way to 'predit' some audio.  Hindenburg is an option.  I too have Auria and the fellow at Bossjock likes Multitrack DAW.  I enjoyed the show, have some of the gear mentioned, just need to make it perform to my liking.

    Regards,

    Jerry

To Which I replied - and I don’t think I talked about this yet on the show -

    Hi Jerry -

I have actually settled in on Twisted Wave for editing with BossJock for recording and exporting.

So my portable work flow is:

Bossjock - for recording on the iPhone.

TwistedWave - If any editing is needed on the iPhone

Bossjock - to encode to mp3 and export to libsyn.

I found the twistedwave method for editing to be the simplest and easiest for me after trying out quite a few different apps.

Both BossJock and Twisted Wave are $10 - so for $20 you have all you need on the software side for making your iOS device a portable recording and editing device.

Add to it the iRig Mic HD  or the Audiotechinica ATR2100 Mic - and you have a complete mobile recording studio.

    Best of Luck Jerry.

Again I don’t think I have talked much or at all about Twisted Wave - but I am really liking it for editing.  I just find it more natural and easier to edit out ahhhh - ummmms - you knows - and dead air if I need to.

I use the Audio Copy / Audio Paste feature in both BossJock and Twisted Wave to also easily move the recording from one app to the other.  Which is also a really important part of editing on the iPhone - if you can’t easily import / export that recording to edit - then that app is not going to work. And like I said Twisted Wave and Bossjock play well together.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from Ryan Leavengood who posted the following.

    Quote

I took the case off of my Apple Watch to clean it. And to my surprise noticed all the scratches on the back. I went to an Apple store and told them about it. They were very surprised as well, and replaced my watch no questions asked. Great customer service by Apple. Kind of interesting though, I haven't had my watch out of the case and have no idea how those scratches appeared. It's a +Spigen case and I'll be letting them know about it.

    Unquote

And Ryan had a few replies.  Saul Lowery also had this issue - but was not greeted with the same love at the Apple store where the Apple genius told him that was just normal wear and tear.

Chuck Rahill also had the same issue and was going to the Apple store to see what could be done.  Has anyone else seen any scratches on the back of their apple watch?   I have not - but I don’t use a case - and either it is on my wrist or on the night stand next to my bed or on the charging pad on my desk - and that is pretty much it.

But I am interested in hearing if anyone else has had any scratches on the back of your apple watch and if you did - was it in a case or naked.

Thanks to all that replied on that thread.

Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Folks Go to today in iOS dot com slash community to join in.

And thanks to all 2000+ of you already in the community and contributing.

Also from the Google Plus community was this post from Lasse Fredriksen who said quote My original plan was to stay with my original streaming service - as of yesterday,  But then I learned that with Apple Music I can now ask siri to play basically any song I can think of.  To me that feature in itself is enough to go for Apple Music and never look back unquote

And Speaking about Siri and Apple Music Thanks to Chris in London for this next one - which is a post titled - Nine Secret Siri Commands for Apple Music.  And some of these were in the Lynda Video I mentioned earlier.  And there is also an article from Computer world titled Your essential Siri and Apple music guide

Here are some of the items mentioned from those articles.

And let me preface by saying when I say Siri - I am really meaning H E Y  S I R I - but will just say SIRI to keep your iOS devices from freaking out.

1 - You can say Siri Play the top songs from 1984 - and siri will add the 25 highest ranking tunes of that year to your up next.  This is a fun thing to do when you get together with friends from high school - you can say play the top songs from the year you graduated high school - then you drink a bunch of wine and lament about how you did not take over the world or even the tri-state area like you had planned.  But with a little luck maybe one of you did become a pop star.

    2. You can also ask Siri play more like this.  And she will queue up 50 similar songs for you.

    3. You can say Siri after this play Lady in Red.  And she will queue up that song for playing next.

    4. Say you want to listen to All along the Watch tower.  If you say Siri Play all along the Watch tower - she will play the song by the artist that made it most popular - In this case Jimi Hendrix - But if you want one of the covers which by the way Jimi Hendrix's version was actually a cover - but the one most famous for that song. Then say Siri Play All along the Watchtower by Chris DeBurg.  or All along the watch tower by Bob Dylan - which was actually not a cover - as ole Bob wrote that song. But it was Jimi that made it truly famous.

    5. You can tell siri to skip - and she will go to the next song in the queue

    6. With Apple music there are many ways to discover new music - and when you do hear something you like - you can say - siri add this song to my library.

    7. You can ask siri to rate a song - Siri Rate this song with five stars.   Sadly this feature does not work with the Podcast app - if you ask siri to rate this podcast if you are listening via the podcasts app - with 5 stars she will say sorry you are not using the music app.  Dang girl that is cold.

    8. You can also ask siri - what song is this.  And she will give you the info.

    9. You can ask Siri to play the first album or the last album by an artist like Siri play the first album by Chris DeBurgh.

    10. Siri can shuffle for you - you can say Siri Shuffle music by Chris deBurgh or Siri Shuffle music for Man on the line or Siri shuffle music for XYZ playlist.

    automatic-subscription-renewal

A few different articles have come out on how to turn off Apple Music’s automatic subscription renewal.

After you open the Apple Music App - the first thing to do is tap on the Account Icon in the upper left corner.  Next Tap on View Apple ID.  Then under the Subscriptions subheader select Manage.  Then Tap on Your Membership which is above Apple Music Membership.

Next turn the slider next to Automatic Renewal to OFF.

Of course come September if you want to enable Apple Music - you need to come back here and select the renewal option you want.

Ok - now speaking of Apple Music - I have had a bunch of feedback on it - here is some of that feedback:

    Hi Rob

I'm amazed at how the new app/service is able to tailor-make a radio station for my listening enjoyment! With just a few suggestions on my part, Apple has introduced me to so many new artists and songs within my favourite genre. (Americana)

I doubt that I would have ever been able to find these on my own, given the limits of time and geographical location.

    Regards,

    Michael (ON, Canada)

    Hey Rob.

I updated to 8.4 (iPhone 6) and was curious about apple music.   Started playing around.  And realized my wife had signed into her App Store account on my phone.  And not thinking I just entered the password.   Now upon trying to switch it to my account.  I no longer have 3 free months and they have already billed me 10 dollars.   I called apple for the refund which was no issue,  but they are telling me it's a no go to reset the 3 free month trial for me to play around.   So because of one slip up I lost out.

I've been on the phone with them multiple times and I will eventually persuade them to fix it.   There should be absolutely no charges in the first 3 months.  That should have been a flag to them!

Just a heads up to everyone and anyone.   Use your own Apple ID.  Even with family sharing turned on.  It did not make a difference!

    Regards,

    Chris Welch

    Hi Rob,

Just a thought about Apple music.. I planned initially to use the three month free trial and then turn it off after that..  But it occurred to me that for $10 a month I can use my Apple music everywhere..  Unlike my XM serious subscription which is tied to my car.

    Goodbye XM!

    regards,

    Rich M

But not all are happy with Apple Music.

From Blair jones in the Google+ community

    quote

I signed up for Apple Music (& immediately turned off auto-renew, as suggested in one article) and so far am very disappointed.

Are there really humans in charge?

Who wrote the "suggested for you" algorithms?

Do any of those people actually have any background in music? or do they just read the top-pop-charts?

Do they know the difference between Blige and Bach (or do they care)?

I gradually (couple of genres at a time) un-liked everything but Classical, and liked artists like Beethoven & London Symphony Orchestra -- but the For You (heart) tab is still pushing pop divas, gospel, R&B, experimental, & so on, with only a sprinkling of actual classical music suggestions.

Why are they pushing music I've said I don't want -- instead of music I've said I'm interested in and might actually buy more of?

    unquote

Timmy T - did make a good suggestion to Blair - where he said quote

Tap on FOR YOU section of apple music, then tap on your profile in top left corner, then tap on choose artists for you,  if you see a recommendation you don't like you simply hold it,and the menu will pop up and you can tap I don't like this suggestion.  if you have anything other than classical music selected then you're going to get other recommendations that's how it works

    unquote

Thanks Timmy - so folks if you are getting music you don’t like - go and see who is selected for you.

    Hey, Rob,

Although, as a long time user of another streaming service, I was initially skeptical about Apple Music, I've become a convert for two reasons:

    1. The For You section, after the week it took to develop, really gets me. So many excellent playlists, perfectly tuned to my interests.

    2. Phenomenal how well Apple Music works in the car, opening up the entire iTunes catalogue by voice command. "Siri. Play Gimme Some Lovin' by the Spencer Davis Group." " Siri. Play album Blue Train by John Coltrane." " Siri. Play Little Girl Blue by Janis Joplin." " Siri. Play Special Agent Man by Johnny Rivers." All of these worked flawlessly on the first try. In fact, the only one that didn't work tonight was "Siri. Play Prelude No. 2 by George Gershwin."

    Regards,

    Jeff in Burbank

    http://9to5mac.com/2015/07/02/apple-music-vs-itunes-match-drm/

A quick little PSA from 9 to 5 mac - which is don’t cancel your iTunes match subscription if you deleted your matched music.

With iTunes Match - if your music did not have DRM and you uploaded it iTunes Match - and then downloaded again - DRM was not added to it.

However with Apple Music - if you download a song it does have DRM.

So if you have deleted your music you want to keep iTunes match - if you have not deleted your own copies of music - there is nothing to worry about.  However if you download you music to other devices via Apple music - the music will be wrapped in DRM on those other devices.

Which means if you stop your subscription to Apple Music - anywhere you downloaded from Apple Music - it will stop playing.

If you are confused - read the full article - but just remember - if you did not delete you music you are ok - if you did delete your music - keep your iTunes Match service active.

    iphone-6s-force-touch/

Seems one rumor with regards to the next iPhone that most are now saying is a done deal - and I would agree and have agreed is that Force touch will be a key new feature added to the iPhone.

So what will Force Touch bring to the iPhone as far as usability items.

From 9 to 5 mac quote “Force Touch will be integrated into Maps to drop new pins, into media players for pressure-sensitive scrolling, into the Calendar for adding new events, and across the system for quickly looking up word definitions,” unquote

I belive Force Touch will be one of those features that once it is in the wild - the creativity of the App devs will get a chance to shine and it will be used and integrated into apps in ways we have not thought of yet.   And many of those ways will be good and some not so good.

I look forward to seeing what comes of this over the next year.

    http://www.cultofmac.com/327318/new-rumor-

    exposes-apples-dual-lens-camera-plans/

One rumor from late June was about a future iPhone with dual cameras - yes - again with this rumor.

But now it looks like this is definitely not going to be a 2015 iPhone feature - maybe a 2016 iPhone feature - Maybe

Now the rumors do say that apple has been working on Dual Lens tech for over 3 years.

Of course all of Apples 3 years of work may have been thrown out the window in April when Apple purchased LinX.  We talked about them on Ep 344 time code 48:54

Where I said LinX makes Multi lens cameras for electronic devices and their two main claims to fame is very small profile - at around half that of other camera - with quality of that of a high end SLR camera.

They also claimed on their site to have solved all problems associated with combining multiple images captured from different points in space - i.e. two lenses.

So will be interesting to see when Apple uses this tech.

Maybe the first part - the higher quality / lower profile - single lens gets into the iPhone 6S and 6S plus this year - and then in 2016 - they include the second part with the dual lenses.

Thus giving then two key new features for the camera — one for each year.  Not that Apple would drag out upgrades or anything.

    http://pocketnow.com/2015/06/30/metallic-iphone-6c-rumors

Rumors are back that there will be a lower cost 4” iPhone upgrade this fall.  In other words there would be a replacement for the iPhone 5C.

Some are also saying this would actually be a replacement for both the 5C and the 5S.  And it would be a metal body device.

Essentially it would be an upgraded 5S - with a new processor - new NFC chip and force touch as well.

Really I don’t see how that would anything other than an iPhone 6S mini.

Which is fine - I know one NBA player looking for a smaller iPhone

Which leads us right into this next story which comes from the you can’t make this stuff up files and it is a story about an NBA player complaining that the reason his elbow hurts is because the New iPhone is too big.  This from NBA player Matt Bonner.

Yes that is right - the guy with the biggest shoes on the Spurs - Size 17 shoe - yes size 17 is saying that the iPhone 6 or 6+ is too big for him and caused an injury to his elbow from straining to hit the buttons.  Are you kidding me?

Mr Bonner I wonder what Arnold would have to say about your complaints about having to strain to hit the buttons.

PLAY DON’t BE A GIRLIE MAN

Yup - that about sums it up.

    Hi Rob,

Do you know if the low-power mode feature in iOS 9 kills  voiceover like it does on the Apple Watch? Would be nice to know to look forward to or not this feature.

    Chelsea

    Hi Rob,

Could you help with a problem I have encountered with the use of a Bluetooth headset with my Apple Watch and IPhone 6 please?

I'm visually impaired and use Voiceover on both my IPhone  and watch.  I can connect each device to my Bluetooth headset but I can't listen to both devices simultaneously.  This means I need to have one of my devices playing through the speaker. I could use a headset for each device but that wouldn't be practical.

Is there a way to listen to both devices at the same time using Bluetooth e.g. Route watch audio to phone or vice versa? Alternatively, is there a Bluetooth headset that will allow two simultaneous audio connections?

Hi Stuart - I am not aware of a bluetooth device you can pair with two different audio sources at the same time.  If anyone knows of such a device please let us know - but I think stuart your only option is to have two different bluetooth headsets one for each device.

    Hi Rob,

I’m a big apple fan boy and cannot wait to get the latest Apple offering as soon as possible.  Unfortunately, living in The Philippines, means we are often last to get new products in official retailers.  Thankfully I travel a lot and get to satisfy my Apple needs then.  The first week the iPhone 6 & 6 Plus were released I happened to be in Taiwan so went hunting for units.  I found 1 store in the entire country that had only 2 units, both 16gb… generally I would wait until a 64gb version became available, but frankly I was drooling over the device and couldn’t wait to get my hands on it.  So now I’m stuck with a 16gb phone and keep running out of space!  Do you have any storage management tips that could help me free space?  I rarely have over 1gb free and have had to resort to turning off my photo stream and deleting music (I use spotify anyway).  I wish there was a way to delete ALL emails on the mail app too… if you have any tricks on how to do this, I would appreciate the help!

Love your show and Thank you  for all the work you do!

    Enrique

    Manila, Philippines

PS I love my apple watch, since buying it I’ve lost over 10kg so it looks great and keeps me in shape!

    iphone-app-you-eat-a-meal-we-donate-a-me?ref=discovery

Here is an interesting new Kickstarter project.  This one is an App - and it is called - Foodshare iPhone App - and with this app - every time you eat at a foodshare listed restaurant - they will donate a meal to a charity of your choice.

This one had a goal of just $2,000 - they are past that goal and have until August 9th at 12:09 PM CT for additional funding.

They state their $2,000 goal would cover most of their costs - but their stretch goal of $3,000 would cover all of the costs.

If you pledge $10 - foodshare will donate 1 meal to Operation food search.

$25 donation and they will donate 5 meals.

    At $50 you also get a t-shirt.

They have 20 restaurants so far signed up and it looks to be all are in the St. Louis area.

If you would like to learn more about this App / charity / kickstarter project search for Foodshare - one word at kickstarter or in the show notes for ep 354 at today in iOS dot com.

We have another kickstarter project this week.

This 2nd one is called Solar Paper - the world’s thinnest and lightest solar charger.

They have a goal of $50,000 and are about 50% of the way there - and they have until August 20th for funding.

They claim this is the quote World’s first solar charge that can be placed inside your note book or planner.  it is a paper thin and ultra light weight solar charger unquote

They have a 5 Watt version for $69 - which they claim is good for an iPhone 3, 4, 5 or 6 series.  Estimated Sep 2015 ship date.  They claim on a sunny day it can completely charge the iPhone 6 in about 2.5 hours - and about 3 hours if it is cloudy.

They have a 7.5 W version for $99 - which they claim is good for the iPhone 6+ on a sunny day - also a September ship date.

They have a 10 W version for $129 - which they claim is good for the iPhone 6+ and even an iPad.  again with a September ship date.

This one looks really nice for hikers and college students or those that sit outside a lot at starbucks.

    your-battery-once-it-hits-80-percent-health/?ncid=rss_truncated

Apple has made a change to its AppleCare+ extended warranty program - previously they would swap out your battery if the health of dropped below 50% - now regardless of the Apple device if you have AppleCare+ extended warranty Apple will change out the battery if it gets below 80% health.

This is for any Apple device purchase after April 10th 2015.

Which means Apple must be pretty confident in their batterys that they will hold over 80% of their original charge after two years.  Guess that is good news all around.

Thanks to Chris in London for the heads up on this next article.

Which is now with Xcode 7 - you can side load apps and do so with out a developer license.

So now you can install your iPhone or iPad or Apple Watch app directly to your own devices without needing to pay $99 a year.  This is really nice for the teenagers out their with out a lot of extra money or just learning to develop more for curiosity then for mass distribution and want to get their own app on their own device.

I can see where with Apple locking down on Jailbreaking in iOS 9 - this might be a way to get new apps on your iOS device - via Xcode - well ok - maybe not everyone - in theory you could now get some jailbreak type apps on your iOS device .

Already one person shows how this can work using the Open Source GameBoy emulator as an example.

Will be interesting to see what type of cottage industry pops up around making source code for open source apps available to anyone what wants to side load them - and has the technical where with all to do so.

Guess I better get started on that tutorial now.  sighhhh

The sighhhhh is not about making the tutorial - it is about the plethora of questions that will come in from the publishing of said tutorial.

Maybe I put up a donate via paypal to ask your questions button on the next one.

Hey Rob, I'm throwing a huge 40th birthday party for my wife in late July and am putting together a slideshow with hundreds of photos and hopefully some video sprinkled in. Wondering if you or your listeners knew of an app that could help me create this slideshow? I have a mac, an ipad and an iphone.

My nice-to-haves are music in the background, some kind of transition control and auto replay. Ideally I would like to connect my ipad or iphone to a big screen or projector, start the show and just let it run all night. Hoping you or one of your listeners might know the best way to do this?

    Hi Rob,

I Just wanted to take a minute to thank you for the app green riding hood. I tried to thank the owners by leaving a review but it wouldn't let me. Kept coming up telling me I had to download it to leave a review. Obviously I had downloaded it as my grandchild is having a great time playing with it on my iPad. Btw, I did leave a review on your app.

    Regards,

    Linda S

Hi Linda - thanks for the reply.  And the review of the Tii App.  Sadly with iTunes - people were gaming the system - by giving out promo codes to folks that set up multiple account with the sole purpose of gaming the review process.  So Apple made it such that those that get a paid app via a promo code - can not review said app.  Nothing is to stop devs that were willing to game the system from dropping their price for a day to $0.99 and then have the companies they hire to game the review system to pay for the app at the lower price and then raise it back up.  Which sadly is what some do.  So sadly the promo codes I give out - do not give you the opportunity to leave a review.  But you can always write into or call into the show with a review for an app you get via a promo code giveaway.

    TRANSCRIPT FOR EPISODE 353

Welcome to the show I am your host Rob and this is the Today in iOS podcast -  First up I want to thank STACY for sending in the music you hear in the background. STACY wrote:

    Hi Rob,

I created this song called FREEFALL FRIDAYS with the App Korg Gadget - and the track was "mastered" (using the term very loosely) within Audioshare using the inter-app audio apps AUFX:Peak EQ, AUFX:Push generic:subtle preset

This is from my Album Orbiting Moodswings where all the songs were created on iOS devices.  You can find my music by searching for Spectral Sevenths two words in Spotify.

Thanks STACY for the music and folks I will put the full song at the end of the episode.   I also want to thank MATT. for sending in the Artwork for today's show.  MATT said the following:

    Hi Rob,

I made this artwork with an IPhone 5S photo, then Used the Autopainter app to apply the painting effect. and the Enlight app was used to add text.

Perhaps you can use around a patriotic holiday.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote ““I added it up and … like 800 people are going to buy the iPad. between its inevitable first-generation bugs, fulfillment problems, and buyer’s remorse over added features and price drops, it’s heartbreak waiting to happen.” UNQUOTE

Molly Wood, CNet, 31 January 2010

So Miss Wood - tell me was it going to be just 800 people buying the iPad or was it going to be fulfillment problems or were you saying that Apple was going to have fulfillment problems at the 800 unit level? And I love when people give price drops and future features of next gen product as a reason not get this Gen product - like it is news somehow that next gen devices are going to be different and better. You think!!! Just Sayin

In this weeks How wrong Was I segment  - I did something with Ep 352 I have only done a couple of times ever with all my 700 Plus episodes on all my different shows.  That is I made a correction and updated the file.  So if you were one of the first 5,000 to download Ep 352 I am sorry about the error about the release date of iOS 8.4 and Apple Music.  For some reason I had it as June 24th in my all things Apple Calendar.  But clearly that was not the case.  iOS 8.4 and Apple Music were actually released on June 30th.  Two episodes in a row I was wrong with regards to an aspect of Apple Music - yikes.  Probably best if I just stay listening to the music I ripped from my CD’s, you know those CD’s that where mostly 20 to 25 years ago - when I was switching from Vinyl to CD’s - and ripped to my computer back in 2002 and 2003.  Sad to say when it comes to music - I am not cutting edge - not unless you count Chris deBurgh as Cutting edge.

    http://www.cultofmac.com/327127/ios-9-beta-2-new/

First off I want to talk about iOS 9 beta 2 or 9b2 and some of the minor tweaks vs beta 1.

One big change is the icon for the Podcasts App - changed from where the white circles around the Podcast I went from slowly fading as you moved down the circle to solid white all around - Yeah not exactly big - maybe some of the other changes will excite or not.  Which means we can skip mentioning the update to the Apple Watch App icon and get right into the Improved search in 9B2.  As in now third party apps have their own on/off toggles for search.

The News App is now added to iCloud settings - not that the news app has been launched - but when it is - we now have a toggle for it in the iCloud settings.

As with past Beta 1’s there is a feature that then went away in beta 2.  This time around it was the Content blockers option in Beta 1 that is now gone in beta 2 - this in the settings for Safari.  However there are two new options in Safari settings - you can now choose to show or hide the tab bar and the favorites bar.

One nice change to 9B2 is per the iPad keyboard. With beta 1 it was showing new buttons for cut, copy and paste.  Now the cut and copy buttons are replaced with undo and redo buttons - which are more useful most of the time.  However if you do select text - then the cut and copy buttons return and replace the undo / redo buttons - so the cut and copy buttons are still in the keyboard - just hidden until you actually need and can use them.

Now I should point out the redo button in the Stock notes app is replaced with the check list option button.  So the stock keyboard varies a bit from stock app to stock app depending on need.

Those were some of the key changes in 9B2.

Here is some feedback on 9B2

    Hi Rob,

I've been playing around in the developer copy of iOS9 beta2.  the biggest news for me... maybe just me.  (thank you Apple!) I am now able to add the song I"m currently listening to, to  any playlist I have.

This has been available in iTunes on the mac (since I started using in 2007).  Since my first iPod Touch, I've often wished that while listening to a random playlist to be able to simply tap on an option to add the listening song to a playlist of my choice.

This is something that makes sense to me.  I like to put together photo slideshows with video of our family vacations, picking the right song can sometimes take some time, and I'll weed through the 1000's of songs I own to find the right genre and song that I want for the trip.  I would find some candidates but keeping them bookmarked was trying at best, but with this new welcomed addition, I'm so glad that iOS9 is a great refinement release!

    Thanks Apple!

    regards,

    Francisco Tapia

One other feature in iOS 9 I have not mentioned yet - at least I don’t think I have - and I am not sure if it was in beta 1 or just beta 2 - is the ability to Save as PDF - this is basically the same as the print to PDF feature you see in Mac OS Ten.  This is located in the share option - so now when in an app like notes or mail or safari - you can save the doc / email / page as a PDF in the iBooks app.  Very nice addition.

    09:23

    http://www.cnet.com/news/whats-new-in-ios-8-4-besides-apple-music/

Lets talk also about some of the changes for iOS 8.4 vs 8.3

Obviously the big monster change is Apple Music - but there are other tweaks / changes / modifications and more to 8.4.

You can now Browse, Listen and download audiobooks from inside iBooks.  And very important is that books that are made for iBooks now will work on the iPhone in addition to just the iPad as before.  That means my Podcast101 iBook will now be available on the iPhone.  So for all of you that hid the iBook App in some sub folder on your iPhone - time to locate it and move it back out.

Oh and do me a favor on your iPhone go to the iBook app - search for Podcast101 - one word - and download my free iBook.  It helps me in the rankings.  And it gives you a chance to see a free iBook and how it looks on your iphone.  Hint when viewing it turn your iPhone into landscape mode.

There were other usability and stability improvements to the iBooks app as well.

In 8.4 there were other fixes - such as one for an issue where receiving a specific series of Unicode characters caused the device to reboot - this was the bug also known as the the Effective Power bug - where a “friend” would send you a text message with effective power and then some other characters and it would crash your phone see ep 349 time code 07 minutes and 51 seconds for more on that bug.  Well that bug is now squashed.

They also fixed an issue that kept GPS accessories from providing location data - which you know for GPS accessories is kind of a big deal.

And they fixed an issue were Apple Watch apps became zombies - well ok - what happened was Apple watch apps you deleted would re-install all on their own.  So not exactly Game of Thrones and the White Walkers raising the dead - but still a little bit a of a bother.

    11:45

    http://www.gottabemobile.com/2015/06/30/how-to-fix-

    bad-ios-8-4-battery-life/

As with all iOS updates a certain percentage of users - a small percentage are reporting some issues with the update.  This time it is around battery drain issues.

I know some of you have not waited to update - and if you did not wait and are seeing battery drain issues - again which it seems only a small % are seeing said issues - here are some potential tweaks / adjustments you can make to your settings to improve said battery life.

First up - go to usage and see if there is one or two bad apps causing your the most loss of battery life. It could be an issue with the update.  force quit that app or apps.

A big killer of battery in iOS 8.4 - and this is not a bug or surprising - is the new Apple Music app - if you are streaming music all the time - Gee guess what you will be draining your battery pretty faster.  Again you can confirm that under Settings - general - usage - battery usage.

Check to see your settings if you have auto brightness now on and where the brightness level is set.  Sometimes this changes after an update.

And of course take a look at the PDF I have in the Tii App for settings to change to improve battery life and see how your settings match up.  To find the PDF in the Tii app go to the episode list - tap on PDF at the top - and it is the bottom item titles iOS 8 battery saving tips.  Check that out for advice on how to maximize battery life.

Per my recommendation for iOS 8.4 - if you are interested in Apple Music - then by all means go and update.  If you have ZERO plans for Apple Music - it might be worth it to wait until iOS 8.4.1 comes out - which should be in a few weeks if history is any indicator on these things.

But so far most reports I have read and feedbakc sent in is mostly positive for iOS 8.4.  I have two of my devices at 8.4 and both seem to be doing well - and that includes my main iPhone I use all the time - and my wifes iPad which I did not tell her yet has been updated.

Hi Rob thought I'd try to get to you this way also, just downloaded 8.4 I know I know did not and take your advice again but it seems to be working very smoothly and I guess I'm tardy lucky on that on that score. One question I'm not allowed to make playlists of my own and Apple music it keeps telling me I'm unable to at this time to do that. That I will be able to do it later Ron in the music settings but it's just not allowing me to do it at all. I was wondering if you had an answer for me if not maybe someone else does. Great show as always

    Regards,

    William A

Hey Rob I've been having some issues with iOS 8.4 where most of my third party apps are lagging so much I can't even use them for example in the photos app I can't watch any videos and and on Instagram I can't even view my feed

If you or any of your listers have the solution please let my know and thanks for the show!!

    Regards.

    -Mathieu

    I sent the following:

    Hi Mathieu,

What type of iOS device are your running on?

If it is any thing from the iPhone 5S or later - you should not have any lag.

Try the following regardless of the type of device

First force quit all your open apps.

Settings - General - Reset - Reset Network settings

Then once it reboots - go to wifi - and re-log into your wifi - also to go Settings - General - About - and put your iOS’s name back in - if you had anything special in there.

Then let me know how it is working for you.

    Rob W

His response - Thanks Rob it solved the problem right away! And I was using an iPhone 5s

Remember folks before you upgrade - I always recommend you do the settings - general - reset - reset network settings step - it does seems to make things run smoother.

And make sure to go to the Tii App and in the episode list click on PDF and read over my recommended steps before doing any update.  I do that and my updates tend to go great - knock on wood.  Again that is Recommended - I am not saying required - so if you did not do it that way and all worked fine for you - great - but I do get emails every single dot update - that they wished they had done it that way this time.

    17:37

I want to talk about today’s sponsor and that is the brand new Game ScapeFall - one word.

This comes from Dark Realm Studios - the Devs behind the highly successful and very highly rated app Pandemic 2.5

Scapefall is a side scrolling Strategy game with live action elements where players can design and launch customized weapons at their enemies.

This is set up where there are three countries and since it is side scrolling and looping - everyone is fighting on two fronts. Just to keep you on your toes.

The basics are you have to manage your resources and build up your country and your armed forces to attack your enemies to keep them knocked down before they attack you in force.  You start out in the late 1930’s and move forward in time and have to manage your population, military, research and factories.

The App is just $0.99 in the app store - there are no ups no extras - i.e. no in app purchases to sucker you into - $0.99 is all it will cost you - and for that price you get a strategy game where you need to figure out over time how to allocate your resources to best build up your country and your forces.  Do you build up population first and housing?  When do you add troops and what type of troops do you deploy and when.  If you want to be challenged and have fun - and yes absolutely waste time - which is the whole purpose of any game.  This is a very good app to check out.  Hey It caused this show to be delayed at least a day as I was spending time playing it myself this past weekend and this week.  Search for Scapefall in the iOS app store and again the app is just $0.99

Thanks guys for sponsoring this episode.

    Hi Rob,

There was an individual asking about printing back to a home printer while out and about. Many HP printers with e-print capabilities offer an email address that you can send emails to and they will print. I did this at job fair once, I was able to print the applications to the companies I was talking to along with some of the notes I had taken at the booth!

    Regards,

    Hi Rob,

Regarding the caller who requested a way to ePrint from anywhere, if you have an HP printer, you can download their ePrint app. I don't use it often, and haven't used it recently, but I can print through it to my printer from my iPhone and iPad from wherever I happen to be.

Also available for other European countries.

    Aloha,

     Charles R. “Bob” Lundy

    Hi Rob,

Love the podcast and your previous giveaway mention of my watch kit app SplitTheCheck

For the listener on Sprint traveling to France/Europe:

Call Sprint and get an “international SIM unlock” for your phone.  This is available, upon request (be insistent) and you do not need a fully paid or contract expiration to quality.  All Sprint phones since the iPhone 4S have both CDMA and GSM hardware inside but are carrier locked to not allow using GSM in the US.  The International SIM  unlock allows using 3rd party SIM only outside the US.

Keep in mind that buying a “local SIM” in-country is not painless.  You will have to queue in line at a local phone carrier’s store (they are often busy) and then present your Passport and wait for them to activate the SIM.  Be sure and test your phone in their presence before leaving  the store.  It might not work and require another visit to the store otherwise.  In my last European trip, I was on a cruise ship and normally they hold your passport hostage so after waiting 2 hours at a store in Spain, I was turned away for not having my actual passport (scanned copy on my phone was not good enough).

You can buy SIMs activated and pre-loaded for various European countries in the US before you go.  They are a lot more expensive in both initial cost and per-minute fees, but are less hassle so you should weigh the choice and allow time for shipping to you at home to avoid FedEx/expedite fees (don’t decide to order a sim two days before your flight!)

Strongly consider switching to T-Mobile or even getting another phone on T-Mobile to use just for the month overlapping your trip.  T-Mobile has a very generous international plan as part of their “uncarrier” initiative that gives you very low cost voice calls and unlimited regular (3g, not 4G or LTE) data service in a hundred or more countries.  I used it last winter on a trip to Mexico and it worked great.  The lower-speed data was perfectly fine for email, general web browsing, and data-connectivity for apps such as GPS navigation and language translation apps.  This sounds like a hassle, but it is something you can set up totally before your trip.

Lastly, as a fall-back, get onboard with several Voice-Over-IP (voip) apps that work great over any Wifi connection.  Since your hotel, coffee shops, and many other locations now have Wifi, you will at least have communications available by stopping into the nearest free hotspot.  Not as convenient, but a good “fall back” to have just in case.  IMPORTANT — You must install and configure these VoIP apps BEFORE you leave the US because most of them will send a text message to your phone as part of their two-factor authentication to set up your account so if you don’t get it working ahead of time, you can’t just download the app and start using them when you are already in Europe.  I recommend looking at FreedomPop, GoogleVoice, GoogleHangouts, and Vonage (they have a free version).  Of course, you can always just load up some minutes/$$ on Skype and avoid the hassle of the 2nd tier free VoIP services.  (Remember, FaceTime audio-calls, built-in to your iPhone, is also VoIP, but it only works to other iPhones.)

As always “your mileage may vary” - do not rely on these or anyone else’s tips without verifying yourself.  You don’t want to be “stranded” because someone else gave you outdated or incorrect information.

My mom and a friend of mine used Foursqaure to travel in Paris. I actually got my mom's location and found an authentic restaurant for her to eat at that she absolutely loved. So use Foursqaure.

As far as talking she used viber. So she only talked when she was in Wifi. She could also FaceTime other iPhone users when in Wifi.  She didn't use her Sprint Data or minutes. She turned off all radios save Wifi.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came out which is a question I heard from some others was from David Levine who asked the following.

    Quote

The iTunes match option is gone in settings.  Now it's icloud Music Library.  Am I still paying $25 per year for match and the $9.99 per month for Radio?

    Unquote

    Timmy T responded saying quote

If you choose to, iTunes Match still stand as it was.

If you just use iTunes Match, nothing changes.

If you use apple music, you get iTunes Match function, plus the ability to play whatever you want.

So if you're an iTunes Match subscriber and you're planning on becoming an Apple Music subscriber, you can cancel your iTunes Match subscription on June 30 when the streaming service goes live — since all of your non-iTunes-purchased songs will be uploaded to iCloud anyway.

If you're you're not interested in Apple Music and its streaming functions, and want to stick with just storing songs in iCloud and downloading them for local listening, iTunes Match will still be around

    unquote

    Myron Uecker added:

Quote iTunes Radio still works the same as before if you don't subscribe to Apple Music. I didn't sign up for the free trial and my radio stations still exist and works just as before.

    http://www.redmondpie.com/the-hidden-ios-9-

    features-apple-didnt-tell-you-about/

Ok - so now that we know what is new in the latest version of iOS 8.4 and iOS 9 beta 2 - lets look at what is different in iOS 9 beta 2 vs iOS 8.4

I am going to do a side by side comparison for both the iPhone and iPad and go over some of the new features you will see in the settings app.

First is when you are at the main settings screen if you pull down in iOS 9 - there is a settings search box.  So not sure where a setting is - search for it here.  Well in theory at least - right now it does not work all that well.  Searching for Battery Percentage gets you no results.  Really?

No real differences in the top wireless section - that is the section starting with Airplane mode, along with wifi, bluetooth cellular and so on.

Where we start to see changes is in Settings - Notifications - with 9 we now see an option for sort order - if you have selected by Recent - then there is a new option under it for Group by app.  If you select Manual - then on that sub screen you will see a list of your apps and you can move them around manually to the order you want them to show.

Before you had the list of apps broken into two groups - Include and Do not include.  This allowed you to easily see which apps you were allowing notifications from - in 9 - not so much.  Now the main list is one list and sorted alphabetically.  To see if that app is allowing notifications you need to actually read what it says under each one - Where it will either say - off - if no notifications are allowed.  Or a combination of Badges and/or sounds and/or banners.  depending on what is selected.  Or in some cases - it shows nothing - as in you have allowed notifications - set it on for showing in Notification center and on for showing on the lock screen - but have Sounds and Banners both turned off and Alert style when unlocked set to none.  I have no idea why you would do that - but I had quite a few apps set like that or at least my kids did.

I liked the two big lists - One for those active with notifications and one where it was not better then the new set up.

Something else that is missing from the notifications main screen is the option to turn off Government alerts.  In 8.4 you can turn off Amber Alerts and Emergency alerts from this screen - that is no longer the case.

There is no changes in Control center settings nor in the Do Not Disturb.

In Settings - General - we have lots of different options - here are some of the changes between 8.4 and 9.  under Siri - Voice Gender is now changed to Siri Voice.  And when you tap on it - you have a choice for Accent - at least for language set to english - and you can choose from American, or Australian or British.  Then there is also a choice for Gender.

There is also a change Where Voice Feedback is now called Audio Feedback - and before the choices were always or handsfree.  Handsfree is now replaced with control with ring switch.  So if you have the ringer switch - the mute switch set to mute and have control with ring switch you will not get audio feedback from siri.

Under Settings — General  - Spotlight Search is now just called Search.  And rather than it just show the previous 14 or so items - it now shows all of those and all of your apps.  Everything is on by default.  So if you goal is to speed up search - and you have 500 apps - yeah good luck with that.

Under Settings - General - Accessibility - Voiceover - there is a new option called Modifier Keys - this is the keys that must be pressed on a hardware keyboard to activate voiceover key commands - default is Control+Option - the other choice is Caps Lock

Also under Accessibility in the Interaction section there is now new menu called Touch accommodations - which Apple says - if you have trouble using the touch screen adjust the following settings to change how the screen will respond to touches.

There are options for Hold duration which is how long you must touch the screen before a touch is recognized.  Which starts at .1 secs and you can increase in length by 0.05 sec increments.

There is ignore repeat - which is the duration in which multiple touches are treated as a single touch.  again where you can up it by 0.05 sec increments.

And finally you can choose for tap assistance where it uses the initial touch location, the final touch location or have it off.

These are nice options for those with mobility issues.

Also under Accessibility - is a keyboard menu option - Not to be confused with the keyboard menu under General.  This one under accessibility is where you can turn on and off Show Lowercase Keys on the stock keyboard.  Which the lower case letters on the stock keyboard is a nice addition - but for some the lower case letters are harder to read - so this is where you change that.

There are also settings for Hardware Keyboards for Key Repeat with options to change the key repeat interval and the delay until repeat interval.  And there are some other settings for your bluetooth keyboards.

There is now also under accessibility a toggle to turn on and off shake to undo.

And there is a toggle for Vibration - where if turned off - turns off ALL vibrations on the iPhone.

Those are the changes under accessibility.  Nice always to see more options there.

Usage in iOS 8.4 is now called Storage and iCloud usage.  And the change is that Battery items are moved out of here - more on that later.

Under General - Restrictions - There is a new menu called Password Settings.  No when you enter a password to purchase something - you can choose to always require the password for the next purchase or to only require 15 minutes after your last purchase.  And whether you need also want to require a password for free downloads.

Under General - Keyboard - For the iPhone there is a new toggle for Character Preview.  By default it is on - and this is where when you type on the keyboard it pops up the key you are pressing.  Turning this off - seems to speed up typing at least on the iPhone 4S - and really is less distracting.  So remember that one for a nice feature to improve the speed of your old iPhones with iOS 9.

Another new feature under the keyboard menu - this time just for iPad’s is a toggle for Shortcuts.  Say you have created a monster list of Shortcuts and you just want to turn them off for a bit and not just delete them all - you can now do so.

And that are the changes for General items.

In wallpapers as with all major updates there are new stock wallpapers to choose from - you know just in case you don’t have any photos of your own that are worthy.

A major new category added in Settings in iOS 9 is Battery.

For iPhones - there is a toggle to turn on low Power Mode.  When you do that your battery turns yellow - and many of the other options with regards to items that would effect battery are locked down into a setting to improve battery life or in some cases set to a setting not available normally - like the screen auto locks in 30 seconds when in low power mode - not an option you get otherwise.  Again this option is just for the iPhone.

In the Battery menu there is now the Battery Percentage Toggle.  This was moved out of the old Usage menu under General.  Obviously make more sense here in the battery section.

And of course the battery usage by app is shown here now as well.  One nice addition in iOS 9 is now next to the last 24 hours last 7 days is a button that looks like three lines - if you tap that on - it will then say under each app how it used battery life for example on my sons iPad - for clash of clans it says for the last 24 hours - 28 min on screen.  But youtube says 1.4 hours on screen and 39 min background.

And of course there is the usage in time and standby since last full charge in this section.

And we will end the side by side comparison there for this episode and pick it back up on a later episode.

One thing missing in 9B2 that iOS 8.4 has is Apple Music - but rest easy - according to Eddy Cue at Apple - Beta 3 will have it available.  And that should be out next week.

    http://www.zdnet.com/article/how-os-9-upgrade-will-fit-on-iphone/

One of the things announced at WWDC was that with iOS 9 - you would need a lot less free space to install iOS 9 then you did with iOS 8 per over the air updates.  Which for some people is the only way they can do updates.  For those people it was a major issue trying to update - and some have chosen not to.  For others it was a pain to have to do the update on the computer and Pain points equal a certain percentage delaying or completely putting off the update.  To Apple this is not acceptable.  And one solution Apple had was to go out hire magical Pixies that can summon up hidden GB’s in your storage to make the updates to iOS 9.  Well it is that or Apple kind of is cheating a little and temporarily uninstalling apps to free up space for the upgrade.  Obviously it is the latter - but some are probably wishing it was the former as they don’t want apps deleted.  Don’t worry - Apple is not deleting apps on your iOS device without first asking.  What you will see is a message that says quote

Insuffienct space for download - in order to make room for the software update, some apps will need to be temporarily deleted.  All deleted apps will automatically be replaces after the update is complete.  Would you like to continue? unquote

And they you get the option to Cancel or Allow App Deletion.

My understanding on this from reading several posts is that you do not loose any app data - so no achievements or other vital info is removed - just the app itself - and then it is put back as if it was never missing.  Well at least that better be the way it works or we will be talking about DeleteGate in late September.

Some say Apple should just stop selling 16 GB iPhones and this issue will go away - and while I agree 16 GB iPhones should be phased out for 32 GB min for iPhones - I need to point out - I recently ran out of space on my 128 GB iPhone - and needed to go and delete stuff - so this will actually be a welcome option to many with 64 and even 128 GB devices that just do over the air updates.

As you may know I was not an iTunes Match user - and likely will not be an Apple Music users.  But if you are a serious power user of iTunes Match - then you will be happy to hear the song limit of 25,000 songs is being increased to 100,000 songs.

This according to a tweet from Eddy Cue.  It is expected to be raised to that level around when iOS 9 launches - which likely will be Mid September.  So I guess for now you have to suffer through only having 25,000 songs in your library.

Which by the way if you did nothing but play your music 24 hours a day 7 days a week - with an average song size of 3 minutes - it would take you 52 days to get through all your music.  or put another way - you will need to listen to some of your songs twice between now and September - I know - I know - the sacrifices Apple puts us through some times.  These next 79 days are going to be brutal.

    http://www.computerworld.com/article/2939432/mobile-

    wireless/5-reasons-you-re-going-to-want-apple-s-next-iphone.html

There is an Article at Computer world from Jonny Evans - titled - 5 Reasons you’re going to want Apples next iPhone.

    And the fan boy in me said - yeah - A P P L E  -

Ok - his article is not quite so fan boyish.  And maybe not as accurate either.

First up was Thinner - he thinks it will be thinner - I would say - NO - same dimensions as the current iPhone 6 and 6+

next was Metal - as in a different metal - to make it stiffer and less bendable - that I believe.

Home - as in the loss of a home button - UMMMM - no.  The next iPhone will have a home button.  As will likely the two after that.

Faster - duhhh -  out side of the 3G - all iPhones were faster than the ones before it.

Curves - Huh ?  Please don’t be referring to curved display rumors - please.  So unless you are talking about Kate Upton type curves or in fairness to those that prefer the other sex who would be a guy with curves -  Oh yeah pretty much any podcasters -- I don’t want to read about curves and iPhone screens in the same paragraph any more.

    look-nearly-identical-outside-but-numerous-changes-inside-gallery/

And speaking of the next iPhone - 9 to 5 mac seems to have gotten a hold of the casing for the next iPhone - lets call it the iphone 6S - and guess what - it is going to look identical to the iPhone 6 - same all around dimensions.

But as they say it is inside that really counts - especially with S upgrades - which as I have said before tend over all to be bigger upgrades than the none S versions.

The casings show things will be different on the inside.

but externally - all the same holes and locations - Even the Antenna lines are the same place.  Killing a rumor saying they were going away.  Externally it looks like the 6 and 6S will be identical in all dimensions and specs.

But fully expect force touch to be one of the differences.

Force touch will be on all new iOS gear by the end of this year.

    http://9to5mac.com/2015/06/29/samsung-supply-storage-iphone-6s/

One rumor coming out of Korea is that Apple is in works on a deal with samsung for flash storage for the next gen iphone and that it looks like it will start at 32 GB - so the 16 GB version would move up to 32 - and 64 and 128 would be the other two versions.

The only thing I see wrong with this rumor is that Apple saw a lot of people go to 64 GB versions because the difference between 16 and 64 GB was so big.  Many would have saved the extra $100 and went with a 32 GB version.  And one thing we know Apple loves is Money and if it means going to 32 GB is going to cause many people to not spend the extra $100 - well I think you can see why it is very likely the 16 GB version is not going anywhere any time soon.

Plus Phil the Thrill Schiller — said last month that Apple believes the cloud makes up for the lack on board storage - you know - right up until you try to download a new app.

Hey a quick Apple TV rumor - seems there is a some code in the new El Capitan beta that reveals a multi-touch Bluetooth remote - sounds similar to the rumors about the next Apple TV and its multi touch remote we talked about back earlier this year - when the eternal optimist in me said yeah new Apple TV definitely at WWDC.  Or not.

    http://thenextweb.com/apple/2015/06/15/apples-move-to-

    ios-android-app-is-hypocritical-and-its-own-store-rules-prove-it/

One of the things Apple announced at WWDC was the launch of their own Android app - The one called Move to iOS.  And I love the hypocrisy coming from the Android Fan boys that claim Apple is being Hypocritical by creating an App that they would never allow Google or anyone else to put in their app store.

And that is 100% correct when they say Apple would never let a move to Android app in their store - one it would be a disservice to someone about to make such a mistake - but two - Apple makes no bones about their app store being a walled garden.  And part of a walled garden is you get to pick and choose what apps get in and what do not.  Android fan boys are quick to point out that Android allows anything - and that is a selling point if you will for Android.

But you can not flaunt your advantage - and then belly ache about it when Apple uses that advantage to their own.

I think it is great Apple put out an App to help Android users make the transition over to iOS.

Have I belly ached about apples approval process - yes - but not that there is an approval process - just the sometime random nature of how that process seems to work.

Do I think Apple should allow a similar app from Google.  No - because it does not have to - I mean if you have a competitive advantage - use it.  And for each user that does not migrate to Android because of the work involved - that is one user more that Apple helped by not allowing such a mistake. Because in my Heart and mind I truly believe iOS is the better OS.

    Hi Rob

Did the upgrade against my usual pattern of waiting until hearing news from you of side effects. Getting a jump on Apple Music (aMusic to me like the aWatch) was the motive. All went well and no bad side effects thus far.

Since I had just bought  the aWatch at a retail store, I also noticed that when I was streaming an album from aMusic, the watch's music app will control the stream via the "now playing" controls despite the fact that the music is neither on the watch nor my iPhone. Pretty cool in my humble opinion. I didn't find any other integration of aMusic across the two platforms though.

Like you, I will take the 90-day free trial and then cancel. Here's a tip for anyone who is like-minded: once you subscribe to the Apple Music service, immediately go into your Apple Music profile (the small icon in upper left corner of the Music App). Then click on your Apple ID button and change the auto-renewal to "OFF". That way you won't forget to do it later and get charged $9.99 in October. Hope that helps some listeners.

Now, for the aMusic value proposition - the price is okay compared to other options.  But what I'd like to see is the ability to build a "streaming playlist" within my subscription. Maybe I missed it in my first day using aMusic, but I don't see a way to choose a set of songs and save that list to play it later on demand.

Maybe you or the listeners can tell me how to do that?

As always - you have been keeping us straight on all things iOS and thanks for that - please keep up the good work.

    Regards

    PaulG in Lawrenceville GA

    Hi Rob,

I Was listening to the latest episode of Tii and wanted to add to Steve in Brisbane's comment about dictating to Siri. I noted that you can also speak various punctuations such as comma, period, question mark, and others to add them to your text.

    Regards,

Apple has announced that their next quarterly conference call will be Tuesday July 21st - this will go over what Apple calls their third quarter 2015 results and the rest of the world calls Calendar year 2015 Q2 results.

Expect an episode to go up later that evening to talk about all the great insight apple will share on Apple Watch sales.  And the Tim Cook will introduce us to the Apple Car.  I am guessing Apple Watch sales will not be talked about not unless they are just off the charts.  I do expect words like exceed our expectations and supply constrained and great user demand and other meaningless jargon when Tim is asked multiple times for how the sales are going.

And speaking of Apple Watch sales If you live in The Netherlands, Sweden or Thailand - and have been drooling for an Apple Watch - mark your calendar for July 17th - as that is when the shinny wrist bobble with an Apple Logo will be making its way to your local apple store or retail partner.  and yes you do need to look closely to find the Apple logo - it is in small print on the back.

One thing I did not mention earlier when talking about upgrading to iOS 8.4 - was to wait if you plan to jailbreak - and that is because there is already a jailbreak out for 8.4 - the TAIG team that release late last month the jailbreak to 8.3 - that same jailbreak now works for iOS 8.4 devices as well - as long as you have a windows computer that is.

Hopefully a Mac version is on its way.
