In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote “ I can’t imagine anyone under the age of 30 wanting an iPad. A PS3, Wii, GameBoy, or even a useful laptop maybe, but an iPad? Furthermore, I do not recall ever seeing anyone under 30 actually using an iPad. unquote

John C. Dvorak, PC Mag, 13 December 2010

Well Obviously Mr Dvorak does not hang out with Jared - Oh what to soon?  - Any way if Mr Dvorak did hang out around folks under 30 especially those under 18 he would see that the iPad is used all the time.  Today when my kids friends come over for a play date many of them bring over their iPads so they can play games together or sometimes just to watch annoying orange videos together - some times it make me wish Mr Dvorak was right - Just Sayin

    iphone-6s-for-sept-9th-hey-siri-give-us-a-hint/

First off a big thanks to Damon F - who sent me photos of Patrick stewart from Sunny Ozell’s twitter stream - which showed he is still sporting an iPhone.  Sunny by the way is his wife.  And yes - the beginning quote you hear in each episode is that of Sir Patrick Stewart.  So thanks again Damon for sending those pics along.

And now into the new - As had been expected - Apple has confirmed that their next event will be on September 9th.  It will be at the normal 10:00 AM PT slot.  And will be at the Bill Graham Auditorium - which was being rumored a couple of days prior to apple sending out the invites.

What is special about this venue is that it is much larger then the normal Apple venue - that may mean Apple has more to show off.   To put the size in perspective - The Yerba Buena Center - which is where most of the Apple Events for the past 5 years have been - seats a little under 1,500 people.  The Flint Center in Cupertino where a couple events have been seats 2,400 - and the Graham Civic Auditorium can seat 7,000 people.  Obviously my invite was lost in the mail again.

Ok - now per that invite - well as always people will try to over read into it.

This time it has this quote on it - quote Hey Siri, give us a hint unquote

And then the text please join us for an invitation-only event at the bill graham civi auditorium in San Francisco on Wednesday September 9 at 10:00 AM

Above the quote and the text - is a what looks to be the bottom half of the Apple stem - along with some wavy lines and some primary colors.

Honestly - even if you are an avid Coast to coast listener you are going to have a hard time making much out of this invite.

Most do think if it means anything - it means that the next gen Apple TV will support Siri.

This event will be live streamed - which will again require an iOS device running iOS 7 or later or a 2nd or 3rd gen Apple TV or a Mac with Safari - and believe it or not a PC running Windows 10 using the Edge Browser.

For the next Episode - I will be going over the bingo card - which will have the majority of the most repeated rumors on it.

I think some of those key ones are - 1 - New iPhones - the 6S and 6S+ -  which will have force touch and a 12 MP back side camera and finally 4K video recording.

With the event on September 9th - that most likely means that at 12:01 AM PT on September 11th - Orders will open for the next iPhones - using the iOS App store app will get you in first.  Then iPhone will start being delivered one week later on Friday September 18th.

Some recent rumors on the next gen iPhone come from some code found hidden in iOS 9.  And it suggests that the new iPhones will sport a forward facing flash and 1080p resolution which would offer better selfies overall and better pics in low light situations.  Per that forward flash - it is also being reported - it will not be a mechanical flash - but rather a software flash - if you have a mac laptop and have used photo booth - you know what this is - it is where they whiten the screen when you snap a picture to use the screen as a pseudo or poor man’s flash.

And again the rumor about the 7000 series aluminum per what is used in the Apple Watch - and the more robust - harder to bend enclosure.  Remember harder to bend does not mean unbendable - it will still be a thin device made of metal - given a strong enough person - they will be able to bend it with their bare hands - which again will make for a link bait-ish video on Youtube - which I am sure will get not google SEO love.

Another thing being reported by supposed leaks at carriers is that the min storage will remain at 16 GB.  Many are surprised by this - however I am not - last year a lot of people chose to go with the 64GB version over the 16 GB version.  But if the choice is 32 GB or 64GB - a lot of people will choose to save the $100 - and that will be a big margin hit.  So sadly - I think Apple is choosing pure profit in this case over the end user experience.   16 GB is not a level that anyone should get. Sorry.  And if Apple still has 16 GB as the min size for the new iPhones - that in my mind is purely a profit driven decision.  Guess Apple figures 200 Billion in Cash is just not enough.

There will also likely be a new Apple TV with SIRI support and an App store.

And there may also be the introduction of the iPad Pro. That is still one not everyone agrees upon. I am still skeptical about the iPad’s being included - and if the iPad Pro is announced - it is likely there will no be much if anything said about the other iPads.

Because Apple still has iOS 9 and Apple Watch OS 2 to go over - in addition to the next iPhones and Apple TV 4th gen.

Per the 4th Gen Apple TV - there are a bunch of articles swirling around about what this device will offer.  Most seem to think the new remote will be a one where there are buttons in the lower 1/3 or so of the remote face with the rest being a touchpad on the top 1/2 or more.  Matthew Panzarino at Techcrunch also believes the remote will have motion sensors - think Wii control like control.

Instantly that make the remote and the Apple TV a potentially powerful gaming machine.

Add in the App Store - and you have a device that will be making Sony and Nintendo very very nervous.

It will also likely have an A8 processor - so the same basic processor as is in your iPhone 6 and 6+ and since it is plugged in - Apple and turn up the clock speed.

I have seen reports about 32GB of internal storage.  Given the remote complexity and the internal specs - this does not sound like a $99 device - but more likely a $199 device.

One other thing being reported is that it will launch with out a major video content streaming deal in place.  But again it will have an app store and netflix - and that is still a lot.

Still if the device is a hit - that will help apple put pressure on the content creators to get a deal in place sooner rather than later.

It is also being reported that Apple pushed out a WWDC launch so Apple could work on quote - polish, polish, polish unquote - meaning Apple wants the UI on this to be supper buttery smooth.

I know I say this before every apple event - but it does look like this time a new Apple TV is on the agenda.

Prior to the announcement of the new venue for the Sept 9th event - there was speculation from Anal-ist Brian Blair at Resenblatt Securities - that exactly that would happen - that it would be at a larger venue and a big reason for that would be quote

We believe that it is likely to be the revamped Apple TV box, which has been expected for a number of years. One idea, which could be far-fetched, is that Apple wants additional space to create a home living room to show how HomeKit will work.

    unquote

Per home kit he went on to say.

    quote

HomeKit: Apple announced HomeKit in June of 2014 and we haven’t seen much from the company on what HomeKit can do. We believe a software framework for controlling multiple devices in a home would be a strong feature for a revamped Apple TV.

    unquote

Lets just say this - if there is no Apple TV at this event - the price of eggs are going to double - you know due to all of us saying it will be announced and then having egg on our face - you know if case you did not get that reference. hmmm - what is it they say about a joke you need to explain.  Oh yeah - it is just like a UI you need to explain - it is not very good.

    14:05

I want to read to you a quote from Ep 322 - that episode went up right after I received my iPhone 6+ last year.

Quote once I received it - I noticed my Wife was suffering from PIDS - actually I noticed she suffered from PIDS when I received my iPhone 5S and 4S.  Guys if you don't know what PIDS is it is Post iPhone delivery syndrome and it usually shows up as shortness of conversation accompanied by crazy requests to do chores as soon as you get the new iPhone - that is followed by mild to severe moodiness. Severe cases usually are caused by you going on and on about your new iPhone - and your significant other feels shall we say a little neglected.  So guys and gals - let me say this - don't let your significant other suffer from PIDS - take them out to dinner or do something else to let them know you still care. unquote

And again you can go back to ep 322 to hear that quote around the 11 minute mark.

I re-read that quote because this year guys we have a sponsor that can help defeat PIDS - and that is Boll and Branch.

How does Boll and Branch help you defeat PIDS - by allowing you to buy luxury sheets at an affordable price in a package your significant other will love and feel appreciated when you gift it to them. Like I said a year ago - do something to let them know you still care - and this is that something.

The sheets from Boll and Branch are made from 100% organic cotton - not because organic is a buzzword but because organic cotton is incredibly soft.  And the sheets get softer each time you wash them.  We have had ours for a few weeks now and they are incredible. You’ll get the nicest sheets you’ve ever owned for about half the price of what stores and boutiques would be charging for sheets of far lower quality.  I really could not believe how excited my wife was to get these new sheets.  And the box they came in and the individual pouches for the sheets and pillow cases - well the presentation was incredible.

Until Boll & Branch, no one challenged the department stores - so they’ve been overcharging you for crummy sheets forever and there just was no where else to shop.  But Now you can buy right from boll and branch dot com  - with boll spelled B O L L.  Folks You can kiss those retail markups goodbye.

These sheets are only sold online at boll and branch dot com - you can’t buy them in any stores.  That is how they keep the pricing low and free of markups.

How nice are these sheets - well three living US Presidents sleep on Boll & Branch sheets.  And they can choose any bedding in the world and they chose Boll & Branch.

But here is the best part - don’t take my word for it or that of three ex presidents - try them out yourself for 30 days risk free.  Boll and Branch is so sure your going to fall in love with their sheets that they give you 30 nights to try them out.  If you don’t love them for ANY reason - they will take them back and refund you without any hassle at all.

And hey if the rumors about the Apple TV are true - you are going to be spending more time in bed anyway - so make sure you have the best sheets to go with the best Set-top box.

If you order right now - they will give you $50 off a set of sheets plus give you free shipping.  Just go to Boll and branch dot com and use promo code Tii - that right $50 off by going right now to B O L L   A N D   B R A N C H  dot com and using the promo code T I I

Again - if you are looking to defeat PIDS this year - Boll and Branch has you covered - pun intended.

    Hey, Rob!

Just wanted to mention something from your last episode pertaining to the listener who returned his Watch and couldn't figure out a way to keep the screen on when checking his heartbeat... Yes, during workouts, and other "workou, you can raise your wrist and those apps will resume. But, for other apps, you must go into 'General --> Wake Screen' and select the "Resume Last Activity" option, which will then let him check his heartbeat without having to touch the screen with sweaty fingers. 😜

    Hi Rob,

On episode 360, a caller asked about losing wi-fi passwords. I had the same concerns and use 1Password for iOS. It is a great app, uses Touch ID, and has a section explicitly for Wireless Routers. When I'm at someone else's house and they give me their wi-fi password, I go right to 1Password and create an entry. Then I can copy & paste the password into my wi-fi settings. I found this is particularly helpful when accessing networks of non-tech-savvy individuals (such as parents or grandparents) since half the time they'll ask me what the password is. Hope that helps.

    Regards,

    Lou Valencia

Hi Rob, emailing in with a suggestion for the user to weeks ago he was having problems with the volume of their alarm.

Under settings sounds there is an option called change with it changes the volume of the ringer and alerts if you allow it to with the buttons for volume up volume down.

I have mine switch to off, which means that when I volume up and volume down it only changes the volume of my music or voice-over etc it does not change the volume of the ringer or alerts.

I think this may be the problem with the user who had silent alarms when the volume was turned down.

    Thanks Rocco

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from KARTHIK M who posted the following question

    Quote

I Changed the Equalizer but the sound is still the same. I've tried different settings but no change in sound.

I am listening via Pandora today. Does EQ work only with the Music app?

    Unquote

And the answer is best summed up by Timmy T - who said simply - Yup -  And yup it is - Apples EQ effects for Audio are per files being played by the music app IT is NOT for all music being played on the iOS device - just via Apples own music App.

    iPhone 4S --- S = Siri

    iPhone 5S --- S = Security

    IPhone 6S --- S = ???

Oh and the new feature I'd love to see on the new iPhone is when Tim Cook says "Just one more thing!" and drops the new iPhone into a bucket of water.

Mark - that would be a sweet ending.  There have been some rumors about a water proof feature being added to the iPhone - I doubt it is this iPhone - but it would be nice.

Per the S - Apple never really says.  Some say the S in 4S was about speed.  Others said it was Steve.  For the 5S - some said it was about sensors.

    watches-shipped-in-q2-2015-says-idc-making-apple-no-2-in-wearables/

A new report from IDC has Apple in the no 2 spot globally for the wearables market with 3.6 Million units of the Apple sold in the second quarter of 2015.   Except you know if you listened to Ep 357 - based on the numbers Apple has provided and slice worked out for ASP’s - the best - absolute best case scenario for Apple Watch sales for Q2 2015 is 2.6 Million - no way no how did Apple ship 3.6 Million Apple Watches to end users.

IDC has fit bits sales at 4.4 Million units.  Even if that number is accurate - with 2.6 Million Apple watches sold - the Revenue from the Apple watch would be greater than that for fit bit.

Overall IDC sees the market size last quarter at 18.1 Mil units.

Based on the numbers IDC had - Xiaomi had 3.1 Mil units shipped - which by my calculations really means Apple was in 3rd place last quarter.

4th place was and is Garmin at 0.7 Mil units - and 5th place is Samsung at just 0.6 Mil units sold.

Again given how far off IDC is on the Apple Watch numbers - it does bring into question all the other numbers.

And by they I mean Apple and by apple in this case I mean Angela Ahrendt - who for those that are not collecting the Apple executive playing cards - Angela now runs Apple Retail.

Let me just read her quote with regards to the Apple watch - and this is per a video she was in talking to Apple store employees on how to push the Apple watch.

quote the Apple Watch is the greatest back to school item this year as it can be used in the classroom without a teacher seeing, unlike with a larger iPhone. I don’t think the teachers have caught on to the Watch yet, unquote  and then she told retail staff to tell students to quote jump on it before the teachers do. unquote

Yeah - Team - way to go Apple - great life lesson you are teaching the youth.  Now it is very possible - that someone simply dropped some acid in Ms Arendt’s Vodka which then caused her to run full speed into the wall - head first - just prior to recording that video.

Short of that - wow - and ummm   ow

I love this next story - and by Love I mean love hate.  It is about Google telling iOS developers how to basically under cut security features in iOS 9.  This specifically per the App transport Security.

App Transport security according to Apple quote “enforces best practices in the secure connections between an app and its back end.” unquote

What google was doing was asking iOS developers to disable App Transport security to serve Ads.

Per the EFF with reaction per the post that Google put up on how to and why to do this.  Quote

“Apple’s App Transport Security ensures that apps make secure connections to servers, but the fix in this post disables that protection on all domains. I think developers who install this quick fix are likely to leave it in indefinitely, leaving their apps open to sniffing.”

Always good to see that Google does not treat iOS users any different then it does Android users.  Which you know is kind of like how the butcher treats the hog.  Just sayin.

We have another new sponsor and that is Trunk Club.  visit trunk club dot com slash tii

Trunk club takes the hassle out of clothes shopping.  I hate shopping for cloths - And I used to work in cloths store back between my Freshman and Sophomore years in college. I was the only guy that summer in a unisex trendy clothing store on Long Island - but that is a story for another time and different type show.  But I do remember what they told me on the first day - don’t ever ask anyone if they need help.  Don’t use the word help at all It was a huge NO NO - why because people were skittish to start with being in a clothing store.

I understand that - because I hate going shopping for clothes well actually I really hate going to the store, then searching for something I hope I will like - and then going to the dressing room - and who knows what was on that floor.  again a story for another show.

What trunk club does is a few things - first they ask you what your style is - what type fit you like and what your sizes are - and then they put you in contact with a personal stylist - Mine is Mary - Hi Mary.  Then you talk - yes - I had the call about what are you wearing - but in a good way.  Then you get a trunk sent out to you full of clothes that fit perfectly and look great - that you get to try on - on your own - in your house - no rush - no pressure - no one generically saying you look great in that.     You get to walk around where you get a real feel for the cloths.  I had three different Sports coats slash blazers sent in my trunk - All of them looked great and were of course from the best brands - I then went and tried those on with my different shirts I already owned - I then was easily able to figure out the one that worked best with what I already had - AND also was different from what I already owned.  So now I have a great new sports coat that really compliments what I already owned - that I will actually be wearing at the show I go to in Cleveland in early September.  Yes - I am officially a trunk club customer and it could not have been any easier.

I was able to try on the different jeans that Mary picked out and see how they did or did not differ from what I already owned.  Which was nice because - I found - that the jeans sent were pretty close in look and feel to what I already had. So back in the trunk they went.

That is the best part of Trunk club - keep what you like - send back the rest - and there is no pressure to keep anything.

And this is NOT a subscription service - you only get the trunks you asked for.  When you are done - they have already included the return shipping label and tape for the trunk.  And they give you a number to call for quick pick up by UPS.  All of this can be done without stepping outside your house.

Right now their entire styling service is FREE - even the shipping is free - you only pay for the clothes you keep - to take advantage go right now to trunk club dot com slash t i i  -  again that is trunk club dot com slash tii for a trunk filled with great looking and fitting clothes that you are going to love wearing.

Thanks Trunkclub for supporting this show.

    Hi Rob,

This is per the Jam Transit Headphones.

I'll do a full review of these a little later but I can't believe what you get for 30-60 bucks. Best 30 bucks I've spent in a while.

Good bass. Good volume. Don't think there is voice prompts but not sure yet.

I tried to run down to get a low battery prompt but the thing just keeps going.

Spec is 11 hours play and 3 hr recharge.

Speaker mic is a little muffled but understandable. Plenty of volume for those low volume podcasts. Louder than earbuds. Great music sound.

Comfort ok for at least two hours.

I'll be getting a backup pair, I'm that impressed.

I guess this is a review huh?

    Regards,

    Mike R

    Hello Rob,

I know I may be a bit late to this topic you put out on the podcast prior to the most recent one, but I thought I would add my two cents.

All the bells and whistles that Apple is adding are nice and all, but honestly, the two main features/enhancements that would interest me the most would be a better battery and probably at this point greater device storage. Innovation is of course great, but so is improving upon the basics.

I know Apple talks up how you can enjoy a seamless streaming experience with Apple Music or access all your important documents via iCloud or any of the other cloud based services mitigating the need for on-board storage, but for many of us, relying on a solid data connection at all times and places still isn’t a reality. Besides, considering the fact that apps are getting larger in size, enhanced video and photo taking capabilities, etc. storage can be gobbled up quickly. Not to mention that they can be battery hogs. That’s even before you even think about backing up to the cloud and blazing through whatever data plan you’re on.

With phones getting larger and larger and with components getting smaller and smaller, you figure there would be enough space for a bigger battery as was for last year’s model, but also slap some more flash storage in the device too. Who knows, maybe a 194 or 256 GB model simply doesn’t have the same ring to it.\

Anyway, didn’t mean for my email to sound like a mini rant, but again, forced touch, 4K filming, 12MP camera, etc. are all nice, but just give me a better battery and more storage and I would be all over that like nobody’s business.

    Regards,

    Cristobal

A new kickstarter project.  This one is from the folks at Sanho Corp - they are the ones behind the Pearl Compact Mirror and rechargeable battery pack - one of the greatest ideas ever for a kickstarter project and one my wife loves and her friends envy.  They also did the iStick.

Well they have a new project it is the Hyperlink - and it is a stainless steel Apple Watch link Bracelet.

This one had a goal of $50k - it is already triple that and it has until October 1st at 1:59 AM CT for funding.

Pricing on this right now is $49 - while that level is close to selling out - the next level is $59.

This is a beautiful band for your Apple watch - and they are available in silver and space black.

This will definitely dress up your apple watch - definitely a nice compliment to the great cloths you will be getting from Trunkclub dot com / tii - which is why I am backing this project.  If I am going to up my game on the clothing side - I do need to have an alternative to the standard blue apple watch band.

And even if you only can get in at $59 it is still much less expensive then the $449 apple charges for their very similar link bracelet.

Search for Hyperlink in kickstarter dot com or in the show notes for ep 361 at today in iOS dot com.

    Hi Rob:

I have a question for you regarding the beta for iOS.  I am running the iOS 9 public beta on my iPad 2. I really like the new features as well as some the finer tweeks. My iPad seams to be, overall, functioning very well. I am aware that MANY of the new features are only available for the iPad Air 2 and newer, but I am stumped by this: I am using the new Notes app and seam to be missing the sketch feature. This was something I was looking forward to immensely, but I do not see the option. I have scoured the Internet for answers and can not find anything concrete. Do you know if the sketch feature is available for the second generation iPad?  If yes, can you advise how I can make that feature work!!

    Regards,

    Brenton N

    from Pittsburgh PA

Get to where you see folders - and select on my iPhone or on my iPad - then get the keyboard out of the way and you should see a squiggly line in the lower right hand corner - tap it to get the tools to sketch.

    Hi Rob,

On episode 360 you mention that you would have to have the phone on the bridge of your nose in order to hear the stereo separation. But what if Apple put a speaker on the top of the phone directly above where the bottom speaker is?. This would give great stereo separation when watching videos. Especially on the iPhone 6 Plus with a case with a stand. I know its not going to happen, but one can hope right?

    Hi Rob,

I recently discovered a problem when I wanted to improve the security of my Google account by adding two-step verification. After doing this on my computer, I went into the iOS mail app on my phone intending to add the application-specific password which is what Google's instructions say is needed. However, I discovered that there is no way to access the password setting in a Gmail account on the phone. I thought about deleting the account and setting it up again, but a quick search through Apple forums and other help sites showed that this could create an even bigger problem. I quickly went back into Google and turned off two-step verification. Otherwise I would be unable to access my mail.

I am running iOS 8.3, and my wife has 8.4. On both phones, I could not find any method of changing an existing Gmail account's password. Do you or your listeners know of a solution to this problem?

Thanks RUSSELL for the music and folks I will put the full song at the end of the episode.   I also want to thank DAN for sending in the Artwork for today's show.  DAN  said the following:

    Hi Rob!

This was a photo I took on Isla Mujeres while I was in Mexico earlier this year. The photo was taken with my iPhone 6. The moon and light stars in the sky were added using the Pixlr photo extension; the branding with the Camera PLUS app . I added an Ocean filter in Pomello and turned down the opacity to about 75%. Finally, I used iOS' built-in editing tools to adjust the contrast, black point, and overall color of the image to really make the blue sky "pop".

    https://www.apple.com/support/iphone6plus-isightcamera/

To start - let me read from an Apple post that went up on August 21st

Quote Apple has determined that, in a small percentage of iPhone 6 Plus devices, the iSight camera has a component that may fail causing your photos to look blurry. The affected units fall into a limited serial number range and were sold primarily between September 2014 and January 2015.

If your iPhone 6 Plus is producing blurry photos and falls into the eligible serial number range, Apple will replace your device's iSight camera, free of charge.

The iSight camera is located on the back of your iPhone 6 Plus: unquote

There is a serial number checker at the post Apple put up - and yes my iPhone 6+ is in that range as will be yours if you purchased it prior to Feb 2015.   But that does not mean you need to have it replaced or repaired.  As Apple states there are just a small % of units with the issue.  If you are taking photos and they are not fuzzy or blurry - but crisp and clean then regardless of when you purchased the 6+ you don’t need to get it repaired - because well there is nothing to repair.  Yes many spun this to be all iPhone 6+’s are affected - but they are not - and again it is just a small %.

And since Apple made this post public - this means if even a year from now you have an issue show up it is most likely Apple will repair it at that time no questions asked.  That is how Apple rolls.

The thing to ask in this situation is - are the pictures from my iSight camera - the one on the back - blurry - If Yes - take it to the Apple store and get it repaired - if no - then nothing to see here - move along - move along.

Thanks to all the morning news programs and mainstream press that made this a bigger issue then StagefrightGate - just sayin.

FYI - this is not something new either - we first talked about blurry iPhone 6+ pictures on Ep 328 back in November 2014.

    http://www.computerworld.com/article/2973682/data-privacy/the-

    shocking-truth-about-proactive-intelligence-in-ios-9.html

Nice Article from Johnny’ evans at Computer world with regards to iOS 9 and one of the key new features.  and that has to do with the improvement of Siri per what Apple is calling Proactive.  Proactive tries to figure out what you plan or want to do next and then help you with said task.

For example if you call a certain person around the same time every day - Proactive will place that contact’s icon on your search screen around the time it thinks you might make that call.

Or if you visit the gym on a regular basis and normally play music - you will start to see a now playing dialog on the lock screen or when you connect your headphones - once you get to the gym.

Or if you get a phone call from an unknown per your contacts phone number - but that number was in an email - Proactive will let you know who might be calling.

or if you begin to write an email to multiple recipients - Proactive will suggest other people you usually include in similar groups.

or if you go to the local gentlemen’s club it automatically puts your phone to DND and turns off find my iPhone.

All that sound kind of big brother creepy - right.  Well that last one could be helpful.

But I mean do you really want all this info on what you do being shared with Apple where they sell off your data to the highest - lowest and in-between bidders.

Well luckily for you - you choose an iOS device and not an Android device - and we are dealing with Apple and not Google. See with Proactive - all this data gathering and modeling it is done not in the cloud - but right on your device.

Apple is not gathering this info to sell to their vast army of quote data partners unquote.  No - apple is doing this to help make your UI experience an more convenient one - and one where your privacy remains in tact.  Kudos Apple - even if it does seems a little creepy - until well we get used to it and remember to not pick the extra person to add into that group email when we are talking about them in said email - just sayin.

    09:25

    http://fortune.com/2015/08/25/best-buy-apple/?xid=yahoo_fortune

Some interesting quotes from Best Buy CEO Huber Joly.

He said quote Demand for Apple Watch has been so strong in the stores and online unquote

Of course - so strong - with out an numbers is not really a measurable metric - but is still better then - selling better then expected or showing signs of doing well - or has pleasantly surprised us.  Or we could not be happier with.

Best Buy which started selling the Apple Watch in early august at a select number of stores - originally was planning on having it available at 300 of its stores by the holiday season - i.e. November.  - It is now saying it expects to be selling the Apple watch at ALL 1,050 of its stores by the end of September.

Clearly Best Buy would not be greatly ramping up the availability if it was not seeing good success of the Apple Watch.  That said - so strong - is still not a number.  Or as Ken Ray would say numbers with out numbers.   But still - so strong - is a lot stronger a phrase than -  general interest is showing an upward trend.

For the person with the backup problem and the shattered screen.  The Connecting action of connecting the iPhone to the Computer will Power On the iPhone and launch iTunes. Or launch separately.

To enter password with broken screen..

Hold the home button until you hear "voice over" tone. Then speak your password. Connection to iTunes will complete.

    Hi Rob,

Per play / pause going crazy.

This happened to me also just recently.

Never happened before and I've had a iPhone all but the first year.

I've got a 4s and not the latest iOS.

I'm not sure if I was using Bluetooth at the time or what app I was listening to. It seemed like it was picking up noise or something from the mic and causing play to be interrupted. I think I was using a Bluetooth device.

I turned off Bluetooth and probably quit and restarted the app and all was good.

I think I was using a aux cable from the headphone jack while having a Bluetooth headset turned on.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from Myron Uecker who posted the following question

    Quote

I’m  changing my stance on Apple Music. At first there was no way I planned to subscribe to it. Even though I'm still not convinced that it is as good as advertised, one thing that I am thinking about is how my kids listen to music. I'm guessing that 7 and 11 year-old children will listen to different songs in the future. Rather than buying all of the songs they are asking me for (thank you YouTube), I can just let them download anything they want. Then when their music tastes change, they can delete it from their device and I don't end up with it in my library.

It also solves the problem of the music I ripped from CDs. I have those albums in my iCloud music library, but only my wife and I have access to that. There are songs that my kids would like on their devices but cannot have without me paying for them again. With Apple Music, they can just download what they want.

Does that justify $15/month for a family plan? For now it seems to but I can always change my mind in the future. I also downloaded a couple of albums I liked where I usually would have just bought them.

Myron - very good point - if you have kids - especially young one as they move from Laurie Berkner to Kids Bop to some disney XD stars sound track to who knows what.

That said - for my kids - Pandora is where they get most of their music and then iTunes radio and spotify to a lesser extent.  Of the three - I would say Pandora is actually where they spend 90% of their time listening to music.  I went into Pandora to see what channels they had created.  Kidz Bop was what was active, but there was Phineas & Ferb channel, Taylor Swift Radio, Ross Lynch Radio, and Narwhals Radio - Really boys - Taylor Swift Radio.  And then a whole bunch of others stations created - and going far enough down the list was Spongebob radio, Toddler Radio and Alvin & the Chipmonks Radio - so Pandora has served for them their changing tastes over the years.  But it does require a data connection for it to work.

According to Apple you can wash your hands and shower with it - but you should not go swimming with it or take a bath with it.  It is more water resistant then water proof.  If you fall in the pool with it on - probably not going to be an issue - but if you plan on swimming half a mile - then issues find shall you.

Do you know what happens if you have a consumer electronics device and you don’t update it for over 2 1/2 years - yeah - you loose market share - no duhhhhh.

And some recent numbers on the Set top box streaming device market were just released - and guess what Apple TV dropped to 4th place.

Roku is in first with 34% of units sold in 2014.  Google was second with 23%,  Amazon is now 3rd with 16% - and Apple TV was down to 13%.

Nearly 20% of US broadband households own at least one streaming media player - or put another way - 80% of US Broadband households do not own any streaming media players.

I like to think of the market opportunity as 80% open then 20% closed.

When you actually look at what is in those 20% of households - Roku is number 1 at 37%,  Chromecast is number 2 at 19% - Apple TV is 3rd at 17% and Amazon Fire is 4th at 14%.

Again with 2014 % ’s being what they were - in 2015 it has to be even worse for Apple TV.

Unless of course Apple does release a new and greatly improved Apple TV next month with availability before November in great quantity.  We don’t need shortages for the next Apple TV this holiday season.

Is there a new Apple TV coming - yes - is it coming at the September 9th event - It better it better it bet.  I mean when I say I need it you  you say you better.  Because if it is not announced in September it is going to cut me like a knife.

On the iPad pro rumor front - it looks like it may have been spotted in some app logs.  A device with the model identifier of iPad 6,8 and a resolution of 2,732 x 2,048 pixels was found.

It was also found to be running iOS 9.1 - which would lead one to believe if announced in September we likely would not see it until at least November.

The specs of the pixels also points more towards a 12.9 inch display.

    http://finance.yahoo.com/news/worlds-most-

    accurate-apple-analyst-145201055.html

Some new or re-mentioned rumored specs for the iPad Pro come from Ming-chi Kuo - who is saying again that said device will have force touch.  it will go into production in September.  It will have a special stylus that will be designed to take advantage of force touch.

Also rumors are saying a max storage of 256 GB.

if Said iPad Pro is coming and it has the specs rumored - it looks like the credit card will get another work out this fall.

Some are also suggesting since it likely will not be released until at least November - it is not likely to be mentioned at the Apple Event in September.

There are lots of speculations about whether the September event will be all encompassing - where all new iOS devices and the new Apple TV are announced.

Or if iPad’s are pushed to October - or if the only thing in October is the iPad Pro - with the iPad mini update being briefly mentioned in September.   Along with the new iPhones - with the lions share of the announcement and Apple TV with a smaller role than the iPhones - but bigger than the iPad Mini.

Needless to say - lots of things on the Bingo card for the September event.

    VOICEMAIL - Kevin_Crossman_what_he_wants_in_new_iPhone

    Hi Rob,

I think the most useful feature that could be added to the iPhone 6S would be a new Back button to the left of the Home button. The side swipe gesture works only in a few apps and so is not consistent. Using reachability just to be able to reach the top left Back button is painful as the Reachability gesture itself doesn't work all that well. I know Apple has resisted adding a back button all this time but that was Ok as long as the iPhone was usable in one hand. Now that is not the case, so a physical Back button makes a lot of sense.

The location of the Power button is troublesome. Many times you end up pressing it while trying to reduce volume. One solution could be to turn the Power button into slider (like in the iPad). Or at least move the button to the top. The iPad has an even larger screen than iPhone and it has the Power button at the top, so I don't know why they decided to change the Power button position in the first place.

    ~Karthik

    Hi Rob,

what feature would make me switch to the next gen iPhone.

truth be told I'm pretty recent to the iOS/iPhone world. My first phone was the 4s and then I got the 5s now I have the 6, they all had interesting features on there own.

There's really nothing right now that the 6s has that I want besides the rumoured 12 megapixel camera.. If apple ever did decide to bring back the 32gb iPhone back I'd be all over that besides the 64..

for right now I'll stick to my 6 till next fall and then pick up the 6s..

    Hi Rob,

Just wanted to write in with an issue I had and solution I found.  I noticed my playlists were gone off of my iPhone.  I had turned on Apple Music but never set iCloud Music Library.  Connecting my phone to iTunes indicated that iCloud Music Library WAS on.  I went into iTunes > Preferences > General to turn it off, but it was already unchecked.  I found that you also have to go on your iPhone to Settings > Music and turn it off there as well.  I did another backup and sync and they are now back on my phone.  Hope that helps others that were having that issue.

Bonus tip: while listening to a song on Apple Music, active Siri and say “I like this song” and she’ll hit the “like” (heart) button for you.

    Regards,

Need to put together a PDF with my recommended set up for Mobile recording for Podcasts on the iPhone.  But here is my setup - for Mobile - first you need the right apps - BossJock $10 - and TwistedWave - $10 - are the two must get apps.  Bossjock for recording and then exporting as MP3 to Libsyn.  TwistedWave for any editing after your record.

The Mic I would recommend would depend on your needs of the mic - there are two key ones to pick from.  If all you will be doing is connecting the mic to your iPhone and most of your recordings will be an interview - then go with the IK Multimedia iRig MIC HD - it is $99 and comes with a micro USB to Lightening cable.  If however you want to also connect the Mic to your home setup and you have a mixer - then go with the AudioTechnica ATR-2100 - it is $65 typically - but you will also need the USB to lightening adapter - $30.  That mic gives you XLR and USB connectors - so it is more functional for both Home and travel.  But for just travel - I like and use the IK iRig Mic HD most of the time - and I have both.  Again - I need to put this together as a PDF some time soon for the Tii App.

Quick correction from the last episode in the Indie Go Go project - I mentioned the ThinCharge case - that when you added it - it changed the total weight from 4.6 ounces to 4.9 ounces - meaning it only weighed 0.3 ounces - ummm - no - as Aric B was quick to point out.  Actually that is a typo on the Indie GoGo project page and it should have been - 7.6 ounces - as it weighs 3 ounces - not 0.3 ounces for the ThinCharge Case.  Which is still very impressive - as other battery cases are usually double that and then some.

    regards

    Thomas in Tuscaloosa AL

Thanks Thomas - and this one you have until just Sept 3rd to fund.  This one had a modest goal of $20,000 - they have so far raised over 308 times that amount - yes - that is right over $6 Million dollars is where they are - so this one is kind of successful.

What is said project - quote - Travel Jacket with build in neck pillow, eye mask, gloves, earphone holders, drink pocket, tech pockets of all size and comes in 4 styles.

Yes this is the Scott-e-vest of Kickstarter projects.

Pricing on this one is $119 for the sweatshirt and $129 for the Windbreaker.  The Blazer is $149 - or for $369 you can get one of each and even pick the bomber jacket - which is not available on its own right now.

Anyway - if you are looking for a versatile - yes I’m a geek deal with it jacket, or blazer or windbreaker - then you have until Sept 3rd at 12:00 PM CT to fund this one.  Just search for Travel Jacket - two words at kickstarter dot com.

Thanks to Tash for this next one - which is an article titled - GENIUS BAR SECRETS REVEALED: How To Get The Most Out Of Your Trip To The Apple Store

And well it actually is an article that covers what the title suggests.

One of the pieces of advice - Be honest about if your device is damaged - especially water damage.  If You dropped it in the hot tub - don’t go in and say nope it has never been wet - as all the moisture sensors will have been triggered.

One of the pieces of advice is your earbuds are covered under warranty - yup we mentioned that in the past - so if you earbuds are acting up from last years iPhone purchase - take them in now and get a new pair.

And there are another 8 pieces of advice - which is worth going through especially if you plan on visiting the Apple store anytime soon - or are having issues - one more I will leave you with - is that the Geniuses can extend your warranty 45 days past the 1 year mark - if they want to.  So be polite - and if in mid October your iPhone 6 or 6+ starts acting wonky - don’t think you missed the boat - you might still get coverage on the warranty.

I think the best bit of advice - is to be polite and honest and polite - and not mentioned - but will help - dress nice and wear your apple watch - and shave if you shave and shower - don’t go in looking all scraggly and smelling like you worked out 3 hours ago and have not showered in a couple of days.  Yes - looking good has a positive impact on your outcome.  It is just human nature.  Look for the link in the show notes titled - Genius Bar Secrets Revealed.

    Hi Rob,

You mentioned Duet Display on the last show. I noticed just now that it is available for Mac and PC, but I heard you say Mac. It could just be that you are a Mac user and not that concerned about PC, I was thinking about how I could use it as an extra monitor on my work machine as well.

    Regards,

    Myron U

Hi Myron - you are correct - it does now support Windows 7 or later PC’s.  I believe when it was first released it was just for Macs.  At least that was what I was thinking.  Should have looked at the updated specs.  Thanks for the catch on that.

Hey Rob, I haven't had to do this myself yet so I'm not sure, what really happens when you "reset network settings"?

One thing that scares me, do you lose all the wifi passwords you've entered? Like your home network or the local coffee house or bar, or gym or friend's house or my mother-in-laws house or whatever? Do you really have to re-enter all of those wifi passwords once you reset network settings?

If so is there an app that saves all your wifi passwords? And what else do you lose when you "reset network settings"?

    Regards,

    Aric B

Yes - you loose all your passwords that are stored for networks you frequent - that is the downside to doing reset network settings.

You can always use the notes app for the passwords - but it is not all that secure especially if you don’t have a passcode for your phone - which you know you show - but you may want to get a notes app that also have a password protecting it.  Something Like Locked Folder Free

    Hey Rob!

I have an iPod Touch 6th Gen and for some reason, in my health app, it doesn't count my Flights Climbed. It counts my steps, but not my flights of stairs. If anyone knows how to fix this, I would like help.

    Regards

    Easton.

    Hi Rob,

I was listening to your last podcast when the listener called in and was getting messages on his Apple watch when we had all of the radios turned off on his phone.

I too have experienced this and wondered why.  I remembered that the Apple Watch can still be connected to an iphone via wifi even if it is out of range of bluetooth.  This got me thinking so turned off all my radios on my phone and looked at my router to see if my Apple watch was connected to wifi and it turns out it is.  My guess is that because the Apple Watch is connected to wifi, it is somehow able to receive the message via the router.

Just a thought.  What do you think?

    Regards,

    Johnny Applewatch

Thanks to Chris in London and Francisco T for the heads up on this next one.

Which is that the Pangu Jailbreak team - yeah- they have already demonstrated a jailbreak on iOS 8.4.1

That showed this at HackPawn2015 - a security conference where you don’t want to be using the public wifi.

It is being speculated however - that the Pangu Jailbreak team will actually wait until iOS 9 is fully released before they release their next jailbreak - that is assuming that jailbreak also works on iOS 9 - if it does not - then we could see an iOS 8.4.1 jailbreak any time.

It is surprising to see them jailbreak it that quick.  As it seemed Apple was deliberately killing the 8.4 jailbreak in the latest update with their nod to the Jailbreak team at the top of the release notes.

In any case good news to anyone that jailbreaks and accidentally updated to 8.4.1 - and likely good news for those that upgrade to iOS 9

Last Episode I asked people to send me screen shots of the best signals they picked up from their carriers - when they changes from dots to DB numbers on their phone.  Steven B - had -79 on Verizon in Alpharetta GA - which was the best I saw from anyone on Verizon.  But Stephen M - had the winner with -53 via DigiCell.  In the supplemental award - John D - had -43 - but he has a signal booster in his house - so really not a fair comparison.

    Hi Rob.

I have listened to your podcast for several years, usually in my car through a cassette tape adapter and the earphone plug on my iPhone to listen over the car stereo. This work fine until the wheels in the cassette started to squeak. Three adapters later I decided to get a Bluetooth for my truck (2003 Ford Sport Trac).

I purchased a “Motorola Roadster 2” from Best Buy. It worked fairly well at first although the sound quality was not as good as the cassette adapter,(you sounded as if you had made the recording  in a tunnel). After about a month I started having issues with it not connecting to my IPhone without being turned on and off. Then it wouldn’t turn on all.

I took it back to Best Buy and got a replacement (No hassle from the store at all)  One month later the same problems with connections occurred. Then it died too. I took it back and got a store credit. No real options to choose from.

I really liked the ability to make hands free phone calls and listen to podcasts and audio books with the blue tooth adapter.

I was wondering if you or any of you listeners had any suggestions on type blue tooth car kit to get.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

    Regards,

    Jon from Middletown Ohio

    Hi Rob,

I use Family Mobile's prepaid services however I want to buy the new iPhone next month. I need to know which carrier will allow me to use my Family Mobile's sim with the phone? Currently I am using my old Verizon iPhone 5 (which came unlocked) with Family Mobile.

Also, If when I preorder the phone from Apple.com, will they try and make me sign up with one of the major carriers or will I be able to just pay full price for the phone? I want to pay full price...

This week we have promo codes for The App - HOME PWS - Here is the written review from the dev.

You turn on the evening news and the weather report shows the temperature and current weather conditions at the nearest Airport.  That's great but, the thing is, most people don't live near an Airport.  Weather conditions can often vary significantly across a small area, meaning that what is happening at the Airport is likely not the same as where you live!

Home PWS is an application designed to access current weather conditions from personal weather stations from all over the world!

The application will also benefit current Weather Underground* PWS owners who can easily check their home stations while on the go.

    Features:

    - displays current weather conditions for nearby or known stations for anywhere in the World, including temperature, dewpoint, "feels like" temperature, 24-hour temperature change, wind speed & direction, pressure and trends, precipitation in the last hour, daily total precipitation, solar radiation, UV index, soil temperature, soil moisture, and leaf wetness;

    - a daily almanac showing the maximum and minimum temperatures for the day, peak wind speed and gust, as well as specific hourly-averaged temperatures and wind speeds (morning, afternoon, and evening);

    - a graphical display of the data with 4x zoom so you can more closely examine the data;

    - supports stations with webcams for live viewing on the go!

    - save your "favorite" locations and check their conditions anywhere, anytime.  Just tap on the gold star to Favorite any station;

    - simply use your current location and the app will retrieve the nearest 20 stations to you, up to 50 kilometers away!

    - Supports metric units via the Settings tab;

This app was made by a degreed meteorologist, full-time Dad, and part-time app developer.  Your support is appreciated.

Well thanks to Devs for their written review of their App - HOME PWS and for sending in the promo codes to give away.  Folks if you would like a chance for a promo code for this App - send an email to todayinios at gmail dot com and put HOME  in the subject line. http://www.redmondpie.com/apple-has-patched-taig-jailbreak-

    exploits-in-ios-8.4.1/

Thanks to all that sent in various links about the 8.4.1 update for iOS.

The articles varied in recommendations from - No don’t do it - if you are a jailbreaker to - yes you must do it - it fixes lots of security bugs.  Later see the former.

In all Apple fixed over 40 bugs with this double dot update.  That includes the 3 that were used in the current jailbreak - so yes - this update was definitely focused on killing the jailbreak - and Apple succeeded.

I will have a link in the show notes to the Apple report on this update.  In it you will find all the bugs and issues squashed with this update.  Including the first 3 where Apple gives credit to the Jailbreaking team.

If you are a jailbreaker or thinking of jailbreaking do not update past iOS 8.4

If you are not a jailbreaker and you are using Apple Music - then this is the update you are looking for.  As again it fixes bugs with Apple Music and makes your iOS device more secure.

As with any iOS update - there are always reports of new issues popping up.  So if you are sitting there with iOS 8.4 and all is working well and you have no issues and you are not using Apple Music - you may want to consider holding off updating for now.

That said I would recommend this update for all non-jailbreakers.  First before you update - make sure to do my recommended steps - where you close out all apps - do a back up - and then reset network settings - then after that do the update.

Some of the problems that have popped up with iOS 8.4.1 - and mind you this is just for a very very small percentage of people are :  iMessage Problems, Bluetooth Problems, Data Problems, Wifi Problems and Battery life problems.  If you have any of these issues - the first recommendation I have seen out there on the boards - and which seems to work for most is you guessed it.

Go to settings - general - reset - reset network settings.

I am going to go out on a limb and say - if people had done that before they updated - probably a good chance they would not have seen the issues after the update.

In the Google+ community - Ed Tilden asked.

quote  Is it worth upgrading to iOS 8.4.1 from 8.3 if I have no interest in Apple Music, or should I wait until iOS 9?  unquote

I think this one is more straight forward.  If you are at 8.3 - and have no interest in Apple Music and jailbreaking - yes you should still upgrade.  As there were bigger bugs - security issues fixed in 8.4 and more in 8.4.1.  So you will get a more secure device with 8.4.1 then with 8.3.

That said - here is this response from Levi M

Quote - I wish I would have stayed on 8.3. Music app changed way too much for my taste. And kicked audiobooks into the iBooks app. I personally hate the new music app.

    Unquote

That said Levi did say he is jailbroken so he is able to put in the patch that came with 8.4 via the jailbreak - which he could have also done had he not upgraded to 8.4

Still I think outside of Jailbreakers - if you are at 8.3 - you should upgrade to 8.4.1 when you can.

If you need your iPhone or iOS device for work - then wait until the end of your work week to update - giving you your days off to fix any issues that may happen from any update.

    numerical-value-for-signal-strength/

Thanks to Michael for this next one. Which is a tip on how you can change your signal strength indicator from dots to a numerical number.

Simply go to the Phone and type in

    * 3001 # 12345 # *  then tap call

Once in the field test mode - Hold down the power button until you see the slide to power off message.  Then release the power button.

Next Press and hold the home button - about 5 second later the phone will go from the power off screen to the home screen and in the upper left the power indicator should be showing.

FYI  -113 is on the lower end of the signal strength and -50 is on the upper side of signal strength - the closer to Zero the better.

Wondering why you did not offer the Android switcher text message Bluetooth  question the solution of asking Siri to read the message to him?

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from Jaime Peralta who posted the following question

    Quote

OK this is a longshot but worth a try has anyone ever been successful in unlocking a smashed screen in order to backup photos.

    Unquote

From the comments the issue Jaime is having is the device can not be backed up to the PC unless it is unlocked.  And they are with sprint - who will not repair but rather replace the unit.  And they have photos they need to get off the device. In fairness to Jaime it is her son’s phone whom she told to be backing it up - and he did not.  And she has insurance on it - and does not want to go through a 3rd party that could repair it and pay them - when she has the insurance.

There have been recommendations to try and use voice over by triple tapping the home button.

    But so far no luck.

Seems it comes down now to a choice of loosing the photos or paying a 3rd party to fix the screen.

If anyone has any other suggestions for Jaime you can email or call them in.

Also from the Google Plus community was this post from Stephen Williams who wrote:

quote - If  after the free trial of Apple music, you don't continue with the service, can you then no longer access any music you have made available for off-line use? unquote

That is an easy one - any Music you download via Apple Music is wrapped in DRM like a pig is wrapped in a blanket.  And once you cancel the Apple Music service - any of that music will cease to be playable.  That was a hard requirement put in place for the record labels.  That said - it is just plain business sense as well.  Once you stop paying for a streaming service - you no longer get that streaming content - and that is what Apple Music is a Streaming Service at heart - with the added advantage of offline playback.

Thanks Emiko for this next one.

Which is the folks at Rite Aid finally came to their senses and turned back on the ability to take Apple Pay for payment.

If you don’t remember - back when Apple Pay launched - Rite Aid turned off that capability on their payment terminals - due to their agreement with CurrentC and the Merchant Customer Exchange.  Evidently that agreement or part of it expired this year - allowing Rite Aid to accept Apple pay if they wanted - and it seems they want.

So right now if you go to a Rite Aid - you should be able to use Apple Pay.

Rite Aid - did say they will also be accepting CurrentC when that is finally rolled out later this year.  Or at least when later this year CurrentC is carried by 6 to its launch party.

    http://www.idownloadblog.com/2015/08/12/new-iphones-fiksu/

Well it looks like new iPhones are starting to show up on server logs - research firm Fiksu looked at the logs for many of the apps it works with and found iPhone 8.1 and iPhone 8.2 -  last year around this time they also found iPhone 7.1 and iPhone 7.2 in their logs and those turned out to be the 6 and 6+ respectively.  So this time it looks like the 6s and 6s+ respectively are the 8.1 and 8.2.

What is not found is a 3rd new iPhone - so rumors or hopes or prayers for an update 4 inch - call it an iPhone 6C - yeah right now - the evidence is not pointing to that happening at least not at the September event.

    18:58

    release-date-rumours-features-price-uk-images-force-

    touch-photos-leak-event-pre-order-3589633/

Leading up to the September 9th event - a lot of the news will really be speculation on what will or will not be announced.  The Last few weeks leading up to the event are some of the toughest weeks in the year for covering the iPhone - just because so many people realize there is a feeding frenzy going on and they want to get in on it - and that means lots of bogus posts to sort through and filter out.

Ok - that said - here is the latest in the what I consider the most interesting rumors that don’t come from total whack jobs - with emphasis on the word total

BlueTooth 4.1 - that comes from me based on Bluetooth being in the iPod Touch 6th gen.

A9 processor - that comes from everyone based on everything.

2GB of Ram - this coming from many - based on iOS 9 and many features only available for the iPad Air which has 2 GB of Ram.

Per the new Camera - this is where rumors move all over the place.  There is the 12 MP camera rumor - attributed to many - Ming chi Kuo being a big promoter of that rumor.

Other rumors around the camera are pointing to the LynX camera module.

Ming also said the casing design and materials would be different and would prevent another bend gate - this is recently backed by leaked photos of the case.

Most are expecting just two new iPhones - both at the same 4.7 and 5.5 inch size - I think given the history of 3G and 3gS - 4 and 4S - and 5 and 5S - it will not surprise anyone to see an S added to the current models and the package size stay the same.

There are rumors to improved Touch ID - which well could mean anything.

There is also the rose gold iPhone 6S+ edition iPhone rumor

One of the other rumors recently was about future and maybe the next iPhones being waterproofed.

One other - and lets not call it a rumor - but rather someone looking at an apple patent and hoping - and it is about the home button being able to pop up and then be a joy stick for games.  So essentially the home button would have springs under it and when you want to use it for a joystick it would pop up - yeah - can’t see that causing issues like breaking off during game play or when it pops out by accident in your pocket or when it gets stepped on by a flying pink elephant.  Which is about as likely as this option coming to being.

Yeah one side of the rumor mill is going on about getting rid of the Home button and not this one comes along where the home button can turn into a joystick.  Ummm no - to either this time around. There will still be a home button and it will be pretty much what you have now.

All right - I put those rumors out there for a reason - in the past if you look at all the rumors before a new iPhone launch -there are some that seem like slam dunks that do not happen and then there are new features added no one was predicting.

So that leads me to this question - what new feature or features are you looking for that for you would make the next iPhone a must have upgrade?  For some it is just being released - but for others - like myself with an iPhone 6+ or 6 - you may need something major to push you into an upgrade.

For me - it is the LynX camera module - if the iPhone 6S+ has that - then I will upgrade - but force touch and a slight increase on the camera - is not going to do it for me.

Give us a call 206-666-6364 - that 206 moon dog or send an email let me know what new feature or features you NEED to upgrade come September - especially if it is one I did not just mention.  Because you know there will be new features not on that bingo card.

    http://finance.yahoo.com/news/apple-delay-live-tv-2016-210119330.html

There were a lot of rumors leading up to WWDC that Apple would unveil a TV and Movie streaming service similar to Apple Music - obviously that did not happen.  Then the rumors said it is coming just in the fall - as Apple was still finalizing the deal with the TV studios and other video rights holders.

Now comes the rumor - this time from Bloomberg - that says - yeah - not this fall either.  Maybe some time in 2016.

Essentially it is taking longer for apple to cut deals with these rights holders - like CBS and 21 centurty fox and so on.

The rumors indicate that shocker - it is the price of the content that is the point of contention.

Another issue beyond pricing - is concerns that Apple has the backbone capacity in place to handle such a huge amount of digital data while offering up a end user experience that is seamless.  If you think that is not a realistic issue - go to your Apple TV - go to the Trailers app - and try watching a few trailers - it is a brutally painful experience.

Either or both of these issues - is enough to delay things.

So those looking to spend another $40 a month to Apple for streaming video content - yeah - you may be waiting until 2016 if not later.

Personally $40 a month seems steep - unless you are killing off cable.  But still that is over 4 times the price of Netflix.

Guess we will know when we know.

    http://9to5mac.com/2015/08/18/opinion-apple-tv/

Speaking of Apple TV - the rumors around a new Apple TV are continuing - I mean new Apple Event = new Apple TV rumor - right.  9 to 5 mac is reporting or suggesting or hoping that  the next Apple TV will be announce on September 9th - and it will have the following features.

    1. It will run a version of iOS 9.

    2. It will have an A8 Chip and 1GB of Ram - and 32 GB of internal storage.

    3. It will have a new remote and said remote with work with Siri.

    4. It will come with an App store.

    5. The new Remote will have and be a touchpad

It will be interesting to see if this is the event when a New Apple TV is actually announced.

    driving-car-dont-get-your-hopes-up-yet/

Lots of rumors about an Apple Car in the last week - a lot of that driven by the release of records where Apple requested to use the GoMentum Station a 2,100 acre former naval base that is being used by some autonomous vehicles to do testing.

What the letter from Apple said was quote We would ... like to get an understanding of timing and availability for the space, and how we would need to coordinate around other parties who would be using [it] unquote

But here is the deal - just because apple is looking for a testing ground for a car - does not mean it is a car they are developing - it could also be for testing Car Play

There is nothing in the emails indicating it is about testing self driving cars.

I know a lot of people want Apple to release its own self drive - electric automobile - but it is not likely to happen any time soon.

IF - and this is a big IF - If Apple ever does plan to introduce a car - it would be something they would need to announce years - as in multiple years in advance - just because of all the testing and Government approvals that will be needed.  This will not be a Sept 9th event announcement - with Pre-orders starting on Sept 11th and cars delivering themselves on the 18th.

Hi Rob always enjoy your podcast.  I have a question for you since you have an iPhone 6 plus.  If there is a reason for you to upgrade your IPhone Sept 9th, are you going with an IPhone 6s or iPhone 6s plus? Essentially are you going to stick with the larger screen or go back to the smaller iPhone 6s.

    Hi Rob,

In response to David from Ireland: The VoiceOver speech staying with the phone is an Airplay specific thing. I know many people who desire this for bluetooth. One solution requires that you have an AppleWatch, but you could control the music through the now playing glance and only hear VO through the watch speaker.

Regarding my AppleWatch: Does unpairing and repairing reset the watch completely, or is it quick? I want to have some time to go through the setup process again if this is indeed the case.

Daniel is hilarious!! “that place in California with the bridge?” Love it! And you should continue the “fun with Siri” segments at the end of the show. Really breaks things up a bit.

Thanks for all your help and advice.

    Hi Rob,

Not sure if you have mentioned this indiegogo project yet. Their only offering a case for the iPhone 6 for now. I am hoping they will get enough request for the plus.

    Regards,

    Lawrence

And what Lawrence is talking about is the ThinCharge - one word - which is claiming to be the world’s thinnest Battery Phone case.

This will double your battery life on the iPhone 6.

With the iphone 6 naked and afraid - it is 0.27 inches in thickness and weighs 4.6 oz.

With the Thincharge and the iPhone 6 installed - it is 0.5 Inches thick and only 4.9 oz.  So about double the thickness - which is good - since part of that is the protective lip on the front of the case to keep your screen from cracking when you drop it on its face.

This project had a goal of $30k - and are over $45k now - with 37 days left for funding.

The Early Bird backer price for this is $59 and 472 of the 1000 set aside at that price have been claimed.  Estimated deliver is September 2015 - which means these are already built.

Sadly again there is no option for an iPhone 6+ - this is just for the iPhone 6 and 6S or what ever the next gen will be assuming it is the same dimensions.

Thanks to Michael for this next one.

Which is news that you no longer need to set an appointment to go and try on an Apple Watch.

This means you also no longer need to give your name and Apple ID to try one on.  If you happen to be out and about now and find yourself at an Apple store - and want to try one on you can. It looks you can still make an appointment if you want - you just no longer HAVE to make an appointment.

What can I try to troubleshoot this?

Hi.... Do you or any other listeners know if there is a way for notifications on the apple watch, messages in particular to go straight to the red dot and not appear as a full screen notification first?

After doing some testing it seems the notification goes to the red dot after approx 10 seconds, however if you turn your wrist and the screen turns on within that first 10 seconds, the full screen notification does not go away with out pressing a physical button.

Here is a post in the Google+ community from Saul Lowery - AKA Mr Sales - talking about his Apple Watch issues for his space Grey Apple Watch Sport and scratches on the back and flaking of the paint.  Saul said the following:

    Quote

An  Apple engineer called me yesterday and today wanting to speak to me, but I wasn't able to pick up the phone, so they left a voice message and also emailed me. So I was finally able to call them back today. He introduced him self as a Apple Engineer and was calling to investigate my Apple Watch sport scratching problem. He asked me a series of questions and also mentioned that there were others with the same issue(hey Rob, I gave Today in IOS a shout out as the way I initially found out about my paint peeling off the back of my Apple Watch). He said it wasn't officially a manufacturing defect, but it's leaning towards that being the issue. If you had your Apple Watch replaced for this issue expect a possible call from Apple themselves to get a gist of your daily activity and use case of your Apple Watch. he even asked the type of workouts I do and my working environment. I told him I use my Apple Watch from 4 in the morning to 10 at night ending the day with roughly 45% battery life, he was like wow that's a long day. He was pretty cool and very courteous I really didn't mind the phone call. I only wish other companies customer service were this great. Oh yeah I almost forgot he said that currently the Apple Watch sport space gray is the only Apple Watch with this issue, so if you own this model then you should take a look at the back of your Apple Watch and see if the paint is peeling off the letters and also if there are scratches on the back composite back of the Apple Watch sport. As of now Apple will just replace your watch, but in the future they may have a possible fix once they figure out the cause of this issue. Hope this helps out anybody that's having problems with this. Please reach out to me if you want to know what I did to avoid this same fate with my replacement Apple Watch sport to avoid the scratches, but the paint peeling is a whole other issue, I don't have a clue how to avoid that from happening.

Thanks to everyone that sent in links on this next one.

It is the article in USA today titled - Siri Saves teen after truck collapses on him.

Which well is about a teenage Sam who had his truck jacked up and the front wheels off - and he was under it working on the brakes - when the jack collapsed and the truck came down on him pinning him under it.  Sam was able to butt dial 911 by activating siri - The operator initially thought it was just another butt dial mistake until she realized those screams for help might mean something was up.  or down in this case.

She dispatched help and they were able to get the truck off of him and get him to the hospital where he suffered several broken ribs, a bruised kidney, a concussion and burns to his left arm.  He is now in good condition - and Siri is credited for helping save his life.

    Hello Rob,

I need some help from you or the listeners with a problem I sometimes have with my alarm clock on my 5S. I'm running IOS 8.4. The issue is, sometimes my alarm doesn't make any sound or vibration. When I wake up (late) and then wake the phone screen up, the screen shows as if the  alarm is going off and waiting to be silenced or snoozed, but not making a sound or vibration.

I've tried reading the forums for a solution and found it that is a problem others are experiencing also, but I've yet to find a real solution.

One thing that seems to possibly be a culprit is a notification coming in prior to or at the time of alarm going off. This morning it did it on me and I noticed your push notification on the new episode being up, came in prior to the alarm going off. Which caused me to turn off the notifications for TII this morning in settings (which I hate to do). I'm not sure turning off notifications will help, but I can't take that chance, my alarm going off is too important to me.

If you or anyone is aware of this problem and has found a solution, I would love to hear of it!

    Regards

    John M

    Hello Rob,

I had my 6 plus in my pocket at work and when I took it out of my pocket it was unlocked and everything is in black and white, like the tvs of old! I did an Internet search and I found the accessibility setting for grayscale, but that was turned off and I have no idea how to change it back. I was hoping you or your listeners would have an idea on how to fix it.

    Regards,

    Jason H

    Hey Rob,

After emailing you 5 minutes ago I did find a solution, and it is a known bug since 8.1.3… to fix the issue as restarting my phone or doing a restore didn't correct it was to go into the settings app and turn off the "Zoom" feature that allows you to triple tap the screen. I am playing around with it and when I turn that feature back on, my phone immediately converts back to black and white, frustrating 😑

Just wanted to let you know about it, and here's hoping apple finds a solution with the next update.

    Regards,

    Jason H

    http://www.buzzfeed.com/johnpaczkowski/apples-fall-iphone-

    event-to-be-held-sept-9

One of the biggest Rumors out there the past week plus was started by John Paczkowski with BuzzFeed and previously with Re-Code and before that All Things D - where Apple used to hand feed them rumors.  So when he gives a rumor - it tends to be more of a controlled leak then a rumor.

And said rumor this time is that Wednesday September 9th will be the next Apple event - and I have some confirmation on that - as see - I will be at a trade show in Cleveland that day - so YES that timing make sense because it could not be worse timing than that for me.

So if September 9th is the date - which by the way is the same date as last year - except this time it would be during Labor Day week and not the week after - well if this is the date - then we should expect to see pre-orders for the iPhone 6S and 6Splus start on Friday the 11th at 12:01 AM PT.  With delivery happening on Friday the 18th.

iOS 9 would then go gold master and be available to the public on Wednesday the 16th this year.

These dates make sense as Apples 2015 fiscal year ends on September 26th - so once again Apple would get a full week+ of iPhone Sales.  It is still possible Apple will say to heck with fiscal calendars and lets do the Apple event not during the week of Labor day - but the week after that so as not to inconvenience the reporters.  Ok - that actually sounded funnier saying then when I wrote it.

Ok - actually there is a reason not to do the week of Labor day - it is not the best week for PR buzz.  It is possible Apple could do the week before for the announcement on the 2nd - with pre-orders on the 11th.  or They could do it on the 16th with pre-orders on the 18th.  But given that John Paczkowski is passing along the leak - I mean rumor - it is likely Apple will do it Labor Day Week this year - right when I am at Content Marketing World in Cleveland.  If that is the case - I will be relying on lots of you for sending in your thoughts on the event.  More about the rumors of what will be announced later in the show in the rumor section.

    05:57

    http://9to5mac.com/2015/08/06/everything-new-in-ios-9-beta-5/

Ok - one thing that is not a rumor is iOS 9 beta 5 for devs.  And since I don’t plan to travel this month and traditionally the 5th beta has been very solid - I went and updated my iPhone 6+ to iOS 9 beta 5.

I know I say I don’t talk about bugs - but one that has been reported by many iOS 9 users and has hit me is that the Podcasts App is crashing.  I have read that if you try turning off sync in the setting for the podcast app it will help and if you turn off custom colors in the Podcasts app it will help an if you hold the antenna with your left hand and lift your left leg off the ground and raise your right arm you will get better reception.  Or well that is how it feels reading through the various reports on how to get the Podcasts App to launch.  And so far - NO soup for me.  It probably is because when I launch it - I see a message saying updating library - and then a few seconds later the Podcasts App crashes back to the home screen.  I have tried everything and again no soup for me.  I will keep trying - but I may have to do a full factory restore to get it to work - which seems to be the case with others.  So just a warning if you are like me and have a lot of Podcasts in your library before you update - you might be in for some issues.  Per how much I have in the Podcasts apps - when you go to Settings - General - Storage & iCloud usage - Manage Storage - The Podcasts App show the most storage with 61 GB of Podcasts on my iPhone.  Number 2 is the Photos & Camera App at 18.7 GB.  I probably will need to at that area go in and manage my podcasts - as in delete them all and start over.  If that does not work - then off to the restore we go.

Ok - so beyond the bug with the Podcasts App - which is kind of a big deal for me - given my day job is podcasting - but beyond that iOS 9 has worked well.  Battery life is good - where I had over 9 hours of charge and over 35 hours of stand by to get me down to the 5% mark.  In the past when I measured - that was a little better or a little worse depending on the use case.

So what is new with Beta 5 if you are a dev or iOS 9 Public Beta 3 which launched shortly after the devs 5th beta last week - Well The biggest change for AT&T users is support for Wifi Calling.  Of course if you switch that on - it seems users are getting the message - Wifi Calling isn’t yet available in your area - or put another way it seems iOS 9 beta 5 supports Wifi Calling on AT&T but AT&T has not yet flipped the switch on their side.

There are a bunch of new Wallpapers available - which is one of those minor things that says they are getting close to finalizing.

In the music App if you pull down - at the top is a hidden feature - Shuffle All - which will yes - shuffle all of your music from all of the artists you have music on your phone.

Under Settings and then Cellular all the way at the bottom there is an option called Wi-Fi Assist - It is turned on by default - and it will quote Automatically use cellular data when Wifi connectivity is poor unquote.  That surprisingly does not get turned off when you go to the battery saving mode.

Under Keyboards - Shortcuts was renamed to Text Replacement - to better match up with what is in OS Ten on the Mac.  But at this point - is that not the tail wagging the dog.  I mean there are a lot lot more iOS users than Mac Users.  Why not rename it on the Mac.  Just Sayin.

There was also an update to the activity App - where you can now near the upper right in the monthly calendar view tap on Activity and switch it from All-Day Activity to Workouts - and Yikes - I did not realize I was working out so little.  Oh my.

But Hey at least once an hour my Apple watch pings me and reminds me to get up and go get a cookie - so I do have that activity going on.

this beta is very likely the last work for iOS 9.  Next will be the Gold Master.  And an FYI - last year the episode title for the first episode of August was iOS 8 beta 5 and September 9th event.   By the way the person last year that reported the September 9th even - Yup that was also John Paczkowski.

Funny how some things don’t change.

    Hi Rob,

I have a suggestion for the listener who needs help getting around their iOS device trying to dial a number in a memo.

The way I get around my phone trying to dial a phone number or schedule an appointment for a phone number or date respectively, in a memo is by adding some regular text in the memo so the memo does not contain only the phone number or date. Then tap the screen once to launch the keyboard. Now tap on the regular text to select it. From this point you can select what text you wish to copy.

    Hope this helps your listener.

    Regards,

    Dr. John M

    Rob

I just want to give you heads up about using keyboard shortcuts.

I have about 20 shortcuts that keep repopulating.  I have tried everything of course to get rid of them.

It is a well known issue on the message boards.  Lets face it, apple does not do cloud well.

I would recommend your listeners use text expander instead.  Syncs perfectly.

    Regards,

    Steve N

    Quote

Will you continue using Apple Music past the trial period?

    Unquote

    24% choose - not a chance.  31% choose - You bet I will and 46% choose Haven’t decided yet.

That later group probably will most renew for a few months at least as they will forget to unsubscribe.  Or at least that is what apple is hoping.  Sheketa you asked what I will do - well considering I have not signed up for the beta period yet - I can’t really say.  I have all the music I need already ripped from CD’s or purchased on iTunes and on my iPhone Already.  For free time for audio listening - I spend it listening more to Podcasts then Music - so chances are I may never sign up for the trial period - Apple Music just does not fit in with the way I consume Audio content - which is either Music I already have or Spoken Word Podcasts or Dave’s lounge for Down temp trip hop music via a podcast.  But I am definitely not you typical consumer so don’t use me for an example.

    http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2015/08/01/t-mobile-

    tries-to-win-apple-iphone-users-with-new.aspx

T-Mobile has been doing a few things for the past couple of years to make it the carrier of choice for iPhone users - like offering Hotspots with their plans - and Voice of LTE and Wifi Calling - and now saying Apple music streaming falls under their free music streaming offering.  Meaning any data streaming from Pandora, Spotify and now Apple Music plus 31 other music services said streaming does not count against your data plan on T-mobile - which if you are unlimited does not mean much - but if you are not unlimited it could mean a lot.

The CEO of T-Mobile US John Legere wrote this in a post

quote Now, every single customer who gets a new iPhone 6 this summer as part of this deal can simply swap it for the next iPhone, if they upgrade before the end of the year. Yeah, that's what I said. Just swap it out and pay NOTHING more -- nothing up front and no change to your monthly payment.  No deposit.  No fees. Nothing. You get the next iPhone guaranteed. And you get to LOCK IN that industry-best promotional price of $15 a month. unquote

This is per their $15 a month plan for payment of an iPhone.

They also said existing iPhone customers who have its jump on demand upgrade service will have priority access to the new iPhone putting them first in line when it gets released.

By the way if you do plan to upgrade to a new iPhone - best to sell that old one in August - as the resale value tends to drop quite a bit come September.

    http://www.buzzfeed.com/johnpaczkowski/apples-fall-iphone-

    event-to-be-held-sept-9

Earlier we talked about the next Keynote / Special event being September 9th - but we did not talk about additional rumors of what would be announced - beyond saying the next iPhones - which will likely be the S level version of the 6 and 6Plus.  In the article from John Paczkowski - he is saying there will be the obviously improved next gen processor which will also be more power efficient - so faster with better battery life - or Your cake and you get to eat it to upgrade.

It would have the very oft rumored Force Touch display and will have an improved camera system - whether that means significantly improved as in the LinX camera module or just slightly improved is not stated.

John does say Apple is likely to show off the companies latest iPads but the 12.9” iPad Pro is a wild card at this time.

And at this even there will also be the long very long awaited Apple TV update.

So basically he is reporting anything that can be updated that is iOS related will be updated sans the iPod touch and intro’d at this event.  Ummm - I am not going to by that for a dollar.

Seems highly unlikely Apple would have an event with Two new iPhones,  Three new iPads and a new Apple TV, plus the roll out of iOS 9.  Yeah - just not seeing that happen.

Hi Rob, We can continue to dream of a new Apple TV. Or, maybe it's just a fantasy... Tom Dykes Dallas, TX

Well there are others out there also reporting a new Apple TV at the September event - along with the long and oft asked for hoped for wished for Apple TV store.

Seems the report is that Apple was going to announce Apple TV and the App store at WWDC - but negotiations with the TV networks and other TV and Movie rights holders is taking longer than expected.

Per the new Apple TV - the rumors are picking up where they left off prior to WWDC - with a touch interface remote - A slightly thinner design, A beefed up A8 processor and support for Siri.  And yes the App store.

Current rumors have the TV subscription service not yet ready to roll out - and would follow once Eddy Que works out all the details.

Every Apple Event for the past 2+ years I have been excitedly awaiting the announcement of a new Apple TV and App store for said Apple TV and every event I leave going - darn - well ok - next one - it will be the next one.  So here we are again saying it will be this next one.  Lets see if that bing card box gets check this time.

    date-rumours-force-touch-poll-ios-9-run-osx-3492180/

Another recent rumor has the iPad Pro or Maxi with a release date in November.  Again rumor is it will be a 12.9” screen - well except unless it is 12.2” as another rumor is suggesting.  Lets just say 12 point something inch screen.

It would also have the latest and greatest and maybe then some Processor.  Rumors keep saying both a Lightening and a USB-C port.

There are other rumors out there that the iPad Mini will see its last update and that the iPad Air will not get an update this year.

I would still bet on an October event for iPad’s - with the probable announcement of an iPad Pro at that event - and with an upgrade to the iPad Mini to the latest processor and 2GB of Ram - so as to better run iOS 9.

    24:11

    http://appadvice.com/appnn/2015/08/apple-banishes-bendgate-

    with-a-slight-change-to-the-iphone-6s

One other rumor with regards to the iPhone 6S’s - is that Apple will offer a more rigid less bendable enclosure - YOU THINK - wow talk about going out on a limb folks.

Lets see - all most people talked about after the launch of the iphone 6 and 6Plus was how bendable it is.  Even though Consumer reports showed the 6Plus was actually less bendable then the 6 - that did not stop the general public from asking and talking about it.

So yes - a more rigid less bendable enclosure for both seems like a no brainer.

One prediction I can make is you will see multiple videos in the first weekend showing the next gen iPhones bending - because - well they are metal and thin and given enough pressure they will bend.  What that level is - be it 110 pounds or 150 pounds or 220 pounds - we shall see.  But it will be the video of someone bending it with their bare hands which will be the one that goes viral again.  Thin and metal no matter how much Apple re-inforces it - will still bend if you find someone strong enough.

And as I said last year - this is a non-issue - but one that still distracts from talking about real world specs and performance.

    http://www.computerworld.com/article/2968395/smartphones/

    http://www.technobuffalo.com/2015/08/01/iphone-6s-prototype-

    and-display-show-up-in-new-photos/

So beyond the rumors from John P at Buzzfeed about the next gen iPhone having the faster processor with better battery life and a better camera and then there is also the part about it being more rigid and with force touch - some other rumors are - Double the current LTE speeds and better Wifi and of course double the ram to 2GB.

The latest leaks of pics from the supply chain seem to confirm the same basic body design - but just slightly thicker to support the force touch.  No pics of a fully assembled unit - so no way yet to know if the camera will be flush - which would indicate the LynX camera module with DSLR quality photos or if it is a slight bump in camera specs.  Essentially in my mind I am saying if it is not the LynX camera module I stay with the 6 Plus - but if it is the LynX camera module then I am upgrading. The camera is my most important feature as I have kids and they are growing up so fast.  SNIFF SNIFF SNIFF

    http://appleinsider.com/articles/15/08/11/rumor-apple-

    to-launch-three-new-iphones-concurrently-6s-6s-plus-and-6c

And some last minute rumors about the iPhones that will be introduced in September.  This latest one has it where there would be a 3rd iPhone joining the 6S and 6SPlus.  The 3rd wheel would be the 6C - and would be essentially the internals of the iPhone 6 - but in a 4 inch package that is with an aluminum case and with multiple colors.  Think iPod Touch 6th gen - but with a phone.

Price points for iPhones would then be the old 5S for free, 6C for $99. 6S for $199 and 6SPlus for $299.

The only real issue with this rumor is there is no leaks or photos to back it up.  It seems awfully close to launch for someone not to have leaked either physical units or pictures of said units.

Late in the Spring the rumor of 3 new iPhones came up and others in the rumor mill said no that would not be the case.

Guess we will see come September 9th.  I think having a 4 inch version of the iPhone 6 makes sense - I know quite a few people that want the 4 inch size over the 4.7 inch and larger sized iPhones.

    http://www.engadget.com/2015/07/29/android-matroska-

    video-security-flaw/

Another week another Android Security flaw.  This one again dealing with video.  Trend Micro found a flaw that uses a malformed MKV video in apps or websites to crash androids effectively turning the device into a paperweight. Which by the way is the only state when it is actually not a security risk.

Google was told about the issue in May and is working on a solution according to the article.

    http://www.networkworld.com/article/2968397/mobile-

    security/ibm-finds-another-android-phone-bug.html

And it looks like Apple’s recent partnership with IBM is paying off - as IBM is reporting they found another Android flaw where 55% of Android phones are vulnerable to being taken over - or over a half a billion devices are at risk.

IBM’s app security research team called I kid you not - X-Force.  Because you know - X-Men was already taken - Well X-Force discovered that quote advanced hackers could exploit this arbitrary code execution vulnerability to give a malicious app with no privileges, the ability to become a super app and help the hackers own the device unquote.

This new exploit exists on Android version 4.3 to 5.1 and a patch is available - but it is up to the phone service providers to decide when and if to deploy it.  Yeah they are not known to be like a duck on a cheeto when it comes to updates.  More like a 7 year old on Brussel sprouts.

    http://appleinsider.com/articles/15/07/31/flabbergastingly-

    insecure-googles-android-is-the-new-flash

Daniel Eran Dilger at apple insider has a completely un-biased article titled - Flabbergastingly insecure - Google’s Android is the new Flash.  Honestly I am not sure who should be more offended - Flash or Android.

If you have an Android fan boys that are bugging you send them to this article.  It is quite extensive - and really it can be summed up like this.  Those that just want a phone get an Android phone - those that want a secure phone get an iphone.

Ok - I admit when I said the article was un-biased that was 100% tongue in cheek.

    31:29

    http://motherboard.vice.com/read/goodbye-android

But there is another article titled - Goodbye Android written by Lorenzo Francheschi-Bicchierai - who was a Google Fan boy and security expert - Ironically to me that sound a lot like saying your a Prostitute that is an Abstinence Expert.

Well Lorenzo finally has realized you can’t be both an Android Fan boy and a security expert or journalist and is giving up on Android.

He talks about one fundamental reason for giving up on Android - Google has very little control over software updates. There are too many bottle necks between when Google pushes a patch and when and if it gets to the end user.  First it goes to the manufacturer and then it goes to the carrier.  Where we all know with iOS it goes from Apple to end user.

Lorenzo talks about users going and possibly rooting their phones and installing new versions of android on their own - if you know they are supper users.  Or you can choose the other option - switch to Appel and get an iPhone - which is what he is doing.

We have said it on this show for a long time - Android is not secure - and now the rest of the world is starting to open their eyes to this fact.  I will say this - all these security issues - really have shut up the Google Fan boys in the iOS and iPhone google+ communities.  And that is how you know there is finally a change in public opinion.  This next iPhone launch could be really really huge.  Expect shortages until early Q1 2016.

    Hi Rob and Tii Listeners,

I have been a ballroom dance student for almost two years.  Nothing makes me happier than to groove to a great tune and dance with my girlfriend.  Is there a way to ask Siri to play music that corresponds to a dance. Such as "Siri?  Play us a foxtrot or Cha-cha.

    Hi Rob,

I tried to use Apple Pay at a McDonalds in northern England on August 8, but it didn't work. They did not know why, although one worker said they saw someone use it yesterday.

Thanks for all you do for the iOS community.

    Hi Rob

I'd like to ask you and your listeners if they can help?

I am a voice over user and I'd like to know if you can stream audio to a bluetooth device while keeping the voice over speech on my iPhone? When i am socialising with friends i play music to a bluetooth speaker everybody can here when i am selecting a particular song or album and its really annoying! With my apple tv if i stream something from my iPhone the speech audio stays on my phone and i really really love that and would love if i could do it when streaming to a bluetooth device. Does anybody know how i can achieve this?

    Regards,

    Dave in Limerick Ireland

    the-9-magnetic-adapter-for-your-mobile-devic

Time is ticking down on the Znaps - mag safe connectors for iOS devices - and also now for USB-C - read the new MacBooks.  This one is now over $2 Mil US dollars - and you have just until Friday August 14th at 11:09 AM CT to fund this one.

Again this is an adapter that plugs into you lightening port and then you have an adapter on your lightening cable and the two meet like the mag safe connectors on MacBook Pros and older mac books.  They did hit a funding goal to make USB-C version available - but I do not see where you can order those.  Link in the show notes - Yes - this is one I funded and I am looking forward to getting this one.

Search for Z N A P S at kickstarter dot com or for more info back in the show note for Ep 356, 357 and 358.

    compact-and-portable-charging-for-apple-watc?ref=discovery

Here is a newer kickstarter project I thought was neat and it only has a goal of $7,500 - and am actually surprised it is not funded yet.  It is called Helix - and it is quote the best Apple watch charging device for home and travel.  Its unlike anything else on the market unquote.

Well so far it only has $2,342 in funding towards that goal of $7,500 - with September 2nd being the end of funding.

So what is this unique device - well essentially it is a storage / dock for your Apple Watch cord and charger.  What you do is wrap your charging cord around the charger - and the slip it all into the case - and you have a compact little device where you can plug directly into the wall to charge - and it is ideal for travel or freeing up clutter.  Pricing for this case is $12 - with about 50 left at that pricing then it goes up to $15.

Search for Helix in the show notes for ep 358 or over at kickstarter dot com.

    http://www.computerworld.com/article/2956314/apple-ios/apple-s-

    force-touch-the-future-of-mobile-interfaces.html

If you don’t have or have not tried out an Apple watch - then you likely do not know what force touch is like.  But simply put it is like turning your tap up to 11.  You push and push a little more.  For example on the Twitter app on the Apple watch - if you open the app - you can tap to go to your time line or top trends  but that is it or so it appears on options - unless you force touch - and then you have the option to create a tweet on your Apple watch.  Essentially Force touch will open up another round or realm of options without cluttering up the UI.

There is a nice article from Jonny Evans at Computer world that goes over Force touch and some other possibilities with it.  such as force touching to get to the setting options of apps or to open up an email when you see a preview and more.

Point is this - it will give you some extra features to choose from with out making the UI look well cluttered.  There will be many unique and interesting options - like maybe adding force touch to the Tii App that anywhere in the app when you force touch it takes you to the contact the producer screen where you can call or email the show.  Hmmmm - Michael - I have a new feature to add to the Tii App roadmap.

    Dear rob,

I got an Apple watch Sport, but m experiencing something strange. I have the Do Not Disturb settings set to mirror from my iPhone, but when I put the watch on in the morning, DND is still active past the scheduled time, and I have to manually turn it off. this becomes annoying when I don’t realize it’s happening and start missing important notifications. Any help? I really don’t want to unpair the watch and reset everything, but would that help in this case?

    Hello Rob,

I just started listening to your podcast.  My question is - will my iPod touch 5th generation be able to download iOS 9 when it comes this fall? Is the Tii phone number (206-666-6364) would I be able call or text that number from my iPod?

    Regards,

    Alexej (pronounced Alexy)

    From Tacoma WA

Hi Alexy - to figure out if your current iOS device will support iOS 9 - you need only know if you current device supports iOS 8.  ALL devices that can run iOS 8 - can run iOS 9.  So yes - your 5th gen iPod touch will be able to run iOS 9.

And yes our call in number is 206- 666 - 6364 - or as I like to say 206- moon dog.

Per calling the show from an iPod touch you would need an voip to phone out solution like Skype out to do that.  Or better yet - just go get the new free app - BossJock JR and record your message with it - and email it to me.  Search for Bossjock - and try out the free version.  however if you are serious about audio - get the paid version.  It will give the best audio quality for recording - they do a great job on the gain of the mics.  Our email address is today in iOS at gmail dot com

    Hello Rob,

I just upgraded my wifi speed to 45mgb. So when doing a speed test with my data and wifi connected the download speed was around 21mb. Then I put into airplane mode with wifi on and the download speed was 35mb...

Why would this happen when I have wifi connected w data???

    Thanks and love the show!

    Regards,

    Robert S

Tip and advice for App devs when approaching those in new media to get featured. Let me set up the scenario - there was an App dev lets call him Brendon - because well that’s his name.  He sent me an email that starts off quote Hi I know who you are, the king maker of apps @ Today in iOS. So here I am, Redacted, paying my respects as a new app and asking for a small favor.  I’d love to have your opinion on Redacted . unquote and then yada yada yada.  with some info on the app.

I replied back - please call into the show with a 60 second or less audio review of your app - stating up front you are the dev - and then giving a quick elevator pitch of your app.  Keep it under 60 secs - as I will edit off anything over 60 secs.  Again just call in that review to the show.

His response was classic - quote thanks for getting in touch!

what show? What is the number/website etc?  unquote

Folks - that is just plain bad marketing.  You as a dev are looking for any way to stand out and get featured you are fighting with millions of other apps - and you get a reply from someone you carpet bombed - and you reply back with which show and number?

I replied back with his initial quote told him he was disingenuous - and to do a little research. As an App dev - if you marketing plan involves carpet bombing - when on the off chance you actually get a reply - take a minute to do some research on the reply.  And To Brendon - Thanks for the valuable lesson I can share with others.

And Before we go today I want to remind you to send in your feedback to the show - 206-666-6364 - that 206-moon-dog - or record your feedback and email it to the show at today in iOS at gmail dot com - The  feedback can be a question or comment per something someone said on this episode or it can be a question or rant you have about something else.  An App or product review - good or bad - as long as it is iOS related - it is welcomed.  I am always looking for new Artwork to feature that you created on an iOS device - just put some Tii branding on it and send it in.  And of course we are always looking for more music created on an iOS device to play on the show.  This is your show and your feedback is greatly desired.

And don't forget to check out our Moderated Google Plus community by going to todayinios dot com slash community.

Finally there is the Tii App which is Free to you.  Search for Tii in the iTunes App Store - it is the best way to consume the show and to get push notifications each time a new episode of Tii is released.  It is fully Voiceover friendly of course.  Please go right now and download the Tii App and Did I mention it is free.

And that folks is going to do it for us today -
