    http://fortune.com/2015/10/21/apple-iphone-q4-sales/

For multiple reasons - this is one of those episodes - where I record the beginning the night before and then stop - and come back after the Apple event - this time a quarterly call and finish up.  That means everything prior to talking about The Quarterly conference call was recorded on Monday night. And to start I want to talk about some of the speculation from the Anal-ists on how iPhones sales were supposed to go last quarter.  As I have said before the quarter that really matters is the one we are in now - and the reporting in January will be the one to watch - and guess what that is what most of the anal-ists are saying as well.  The only way the numbers for last quarter are looked at as important is if they come in below what everyone or most everyone predicts.

This from data gathered by Philip Elmer Dewitt - The high prediction came in at 51.1 Million units by Sherri Scribner of Duetsche Bank - and the low was 45 Million by Sundeep Bajikar at Jefferies.  As a reminder - on the last episode I put in an estimate of  49.2 Million units which was just above where they were previous quarter. And that would put me slightly above the average estimate from the Anal-ists which was 48.72 Mil units.  We will see at the end of the episode how everyone did.

Interestingly - This is the first time in years - Philip did not put together data on the iPad predictions.  It seems the iPad is getting less and less important over all.  But interestingly he did put together estimates on Apple Watch orders for last quarter - which is a complete waste of time - as Tim Cook said flat out - Apple will not be giving out those numbers as they consider it competitive info - and do not want to tip off the competition with that data.

For the record on the last episode I predicted iPad sales of 9.6 Million units - we will get to all these numbers at the end of this episode.  For now lets get into some other news.

    listening-for-the-hey-siri-command-most-of-the-time

Thanks to Michael for this next one.  Which is about when Siri on the iPhone 6S and 6S+ is and is not listening for H E Y  siri.

Essentially SIRI is listening most of the time - whether plugged in or not - by default.  But SIRI is not listening when your iPhone is placed face down.  This is also true for other iPhones with siri when they are connected to power - I tried it with a couple where I said - H E Y siri - with power connected and them face up and she replied every time - but once I flipped the phones over and put them face down - Siri did not reply at all.

So if you don’t want Siri to respond to H E Y siri - just put your phone face down.

    http://www.androidauthority.com/blind-camera-

    shootout-winner-650299/

Thanks to John Hynes for the heads up on this next one - which is an article on a blind Camera Shoot out - where the Sony Xperia, Galaxy Note 5, LG G4 and the iphone 6S were all pitted against one another and there were multiple photos for people to pick their favorite.  And when it was all said and done and the blind test results were tallied - the winner was - the iPhone 6S.

It received 38.2% of the vote to 34.1% Galaxy Note 5 to 17.7% for the Sony Xperia X5 and  in last with  10 % was the LG G4.

So sometimes specs are not all that matters - but rather how the photos actually look - and that was what this shoot out was about.  But here is the absolute best part - this test was done on Android Central.  And the Comments after the results were revealed are comic genius - not intentionally so - but some of the Android users that found out after the fact they voted for the iPhone - well - they are in deep deep denial now - and trying to justify those pics saying things like - well they like instagram like photos and not quality photos.  Huhhh.

Or the best comment was - this was not a blind test - people could have downloaded the photos and checked the photo info to figure it out.  Ummm - yeah maybe - but who would do that and this was on an Android site with Android users doing the voting.  Dooohhhh.

Nothing better then Android fan boys realizing they voted for an iPhone as the better phone.  If you have some time to waste and want a good laugh or 20 - read the comments to the post titled - Camera Shoot out - Android Authority - in the show notes for ep 370.

    Editions-of-Harry-Potter-Series-Now-Available-Exclusively

    -on-iBooks-for-iPhone-iPad-iPod-touch.html

One Press release from Apple I never managed to get on the show was the one from October 8th when apple announced quote

Enhanced Editions of Harry Potter Series Now Available Exclusively on iBooks for iPhone, iPad & iPod touch

For the First Time, Fans Can Enjoy All Seven Beloved Harry Potter Books in a New & Immersive Way  unquote

Tim Cook said quote “Harry Potter fans are going to love how their favorite stories come to life, J.K. Rowling’s legendary series is perfect for enjoying on your iPad or iPhone and we’re thrilled to offer them exclusively on the iBooks Store. unquote

And JK Rowling said quote “I’m thrilled to see the Harry Potter books so beautifully realised on iBooks for the digital world; the artwork and animations in these enhanced editions bring the stories alive in a delightful new way,”  unquote

Which is good timing for me - as I  was getting ready to start introducing the boys to these books.  And now I can do it as iBooks.

English versions are available now - with French, German and Spanish versions coming November 9th.

And I figure as soon as I get through all 7 of those books - they might be ready for some Game of Thrones.  ok - maybe that will need to wait a bit longer.  Considering they are still at captain underpants.

    12:09

Here is a quote sent to me from Dan Miller host of 48 days to the work you love and sent to him from one of his listeners.

    Quote

I am reading Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography and he wrote something that reminded me of you and your sponsor, Harry's.

"Human felicity is produc'd not so much by great pieces of good fortune that seldom happen, as by little advantages that occur every day. Thus, if you teach a poor young man to shave himself, and keep his razor in order, you may contribute more to the happiness of his life than in giving him a thousand guineas. The money may be soon spent, the regret only remaining of having foolishly consumed it; but in the other case, he escapes the frequent vexation of waiting for barbers, and of their sometimes dirty fingers, offensive breaths, and dull razors; he shaves when most convenient to him, and enjoys daily the pleasure of its being done with a good instrument."

    Regards,

    Artan

    Unquote

And I want to thank Harrys for sponsoring this episode and for helping young men and old men and all men in between the value of a good shave. Folks if you go to harrys dot com - that is h a r r y s dot com and use the promo code t i i - you will save $5 on your first order.

Harrys will give you the best shave at the best price and with out all that hassle of having someone unlock the display at the store.  Price - Performance and Convenience.  No regrets about foolishly squandering your money on Overpriced blades that dull quickly and take up a bunch of your time to get them at the store.

Harry’s providing a great shave at a great price was not about luck either. Harry's went and found a German blade factory that was almost 100 years old and purchased it.  Harry’s owns the most important part of the razor - the blade and by cutting out the middle men on both sides means they can keep the price low.

Plus Harrys as an organization helps those looking for jobs - by donating 1% of their sales and 1% of their time to help prepare people for professional success.  Yes a shave that feels great from a company you can feel great about.

I am 100% a full fledged Harrys customer - and have been for well over a year.

Once again go to Harrys.com now and save $5 off when you enter the code - t i i with your first purchase.  That is h a r r y s dot com and enter the coupon code T I I at check out to save $5 on your first purchase and start shaving better today or at least as soon as your new shave kit arrives at your door step.

    Hey Rob

I just got my iphone 6s plus over the weekend. I really love it. I did the check on my iphone6s plus to see which chip was in it, I have and the samsung chipset. I charged the iphone fully the evening and i had for 48hrs after that and battery fell to about 30% and I use it a bit heavily for emails, a bit of games, youtubing etc. Therefore I concluded this chipgate thing is blown way out of proportion.

    Best regards

    Stephen M from Belize.

    Hi Rob,

In messages push and hold the camera icon and you get 2 quick options!

    Regards,

    Michael

Thanks Michael for that tip - so normally when you go into the messages app - and tap quickly on the Camera icon - you get the choice to select a recent photo from a preview of the last couple or select photo library or tap to take a photo or video or tap to cancel.  But if you do as Michael suggests - you then get pop up from the camera icon with options for Video - Photo or an X to cancel.  Nice Tip Michael - thanks again.

    Hi Rob,

As a voiceover user there is one minor change in IOS 9 which I dislike and

I've not seen it mentioned  anywhere else. On my iPad Mini Retina; when I

open the smart case previously I would be presented immediately with the

keypad to enter my passcode. Now, when opening the cover of the case I am

placed on a launch screen and I must hit the "log in" button in order to

bring up the keypad. An extra and  entirely unnecessary step.

    Regards,

    Kevin Barry

Hi Kevin - it has to be in one of your settings - as when I open up my wife’s iPad mini retina - which is running iOS 9.1 now - it takes me right to the lock screen where I swipe to unlock - and then need to enter the four digit pass code.  Maybe you have changed your passcode from a simple 4 digit to an alphanumeric passcode?

    Hi Rob,

    > I am pretty disappointed in iOS 9. It sees super laggy.  Is it like this for you? I've never had lag issues with any iPhone or iOS.

    Regards,

    > Mike

    Hi Mike,

Nope - it is very fast.

If you are seeing lag - you have an issue.

First thing to do - is force quite all open apps - then go to settings - reset - reset network settings.

See then when it re-boots if you are still having an issue.

If you are - you may need to re-install 9.1

But it definitely should not be laggy and should be faster then iOS 8.4.1

    Rob W

    And his response was quote

Boom! Thanks Rob. Worked like a charm. Reset network settings is a miracle worker. unquote

I can’t stress this enough - if your device was on iOS 8.X or 9.0.2 or earlier and you update to iOS 9.1 - and it is seeming laggy and slow - and animations stutter when opening.  And again your device was at a previous version with none of these issues - the first thing to do - is the reset network settings.  Many times - not always - but many times that fixes issues.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from David Van Nuys who posted the following question

    Quote

I'd like to have a picture of my proof of insurance card in my Apple Wallet on my iPhone.  Is this possible?  How do I do it?

    Unquote

One of the questions was what insurance company David used - and he stated State Farm - to which Myron Uecker pointed out that State Farm has an App - and once set up he could easily access the info.  The same is also true for those with Allstate as an insurer.  And I am sure many others.

Emiko pointed out the State Farm app allows you to save the insurance card as a PDF - which you can then keep in iBooks app.

One thing to point out most national companies - now have apps - so when you are looking to keep a card for an insurance company or hotel or airlines reward - there is usually an app for that.

Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts and comments in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Folks Go to today in iOS dot com slash community to join in.

And thanks to all 2500+ of you already in the community and contributing.

Also from the Google Plus community was this post from Myron Uecker  who wrote:

quote The app that initially caused people to question the chipset in their iPhone 6S, Lirum Device Info, got an update today to support iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6S directly. It actually has useful information for both devices now.

One thing that the app does seem to confirm is that last year's edition of the iPad Air 2, which is what I have, still has Bluetooth 4.0. Looks like Bluetooth 4.2 was a hardware and not software update in this year's model.

However, I'm left questioning some of the data they provide. It seems that in some cases they cannot determine what it is on your device so on the iPhone they show information for both TSMC and Samsung chips. With that being the case, I cannot say for sure that Bluetooth 4.0 on iPad Air 2 was read from the hardware or hard-coded in the app. unquote

    new-channels-ahead-of-apple-tv-4-release/

A few new Channels added to the 2nd or 3rd gen Apple TV.  There is a CBS App / channel - that allows viewers to subscribe to a $5.99 on-demand access of CBS shows - with some live TV available in some markets.  Which will be interesting with regards to Sports come march madness.

NBC also has a new app / channel.  You need to sign up via you current providers details.

And the 3rd channel / app is the M2M channel - which is Made 2 measure - which is dedicated to fashion.  It is free to view with Ad support.

So while you are waiting for the new Apple TV’s to ship - we have this available - if you have a 2nd or 3rd gen Apple TV that is.

    25:48

Well if we are waiting for Apple TV’s to ship - that must mean we have them ordered.  And while they did not go on sale at 12:01 AM PT as expected on Monday - they did go on sale Monday Morning - it just was at 6:00 AM PT.

I order both a 64GB 4th Gen Apple TV and one MFI controller - the one they had available and mentioned before - the SteelSeries Nimbus Wireless Gaming Controller - which will run you another $50.  With Taxes and Expedited shipping - it all came to just under $300.  And I am told I have a delivery date of October 30th to November 3rd.  So hopefully it will be here on Friday.

By the way - 14 hours later I checked and they were still showing October 30th to November 3rd for new orders.

So they did not stock out yet.

Here is some feedback about the Apple TV being available for order:

    Hi Rob,

Thanks VERY much for alerting us that the new Apple TV went on sale!

    Regards,

    Leslie B

Glad to have helped.  And folks If you have the Tii App - you should have received a Push notification Monday Morning a little after they went on sale - letting  you know they were on sale.

    Back to the email bag.

    Hi Rob,

Order my Apple TV , today and was shocked with shipping charges, so I call Apple let them know how much a loyal customer I was , and how disappointed I was after waiting so long for this new one to come out . They wave the shipping, hope to get my New Apple TV Friday . Customers service is why I love Apple

    Regards,

    David

    Hi Rob,

I just purchased the new Apple TV via the Apple Store App.

I believe it went on sale at 9:00am eastern time. I am in central time.

My delivery date in confirmation email is Nov. 2 - Nov. 4.

    Regards,

    Kraig

I went through and looked to see what the break down of 32 GB vs 64 GB units was in the Google+ community and it was 69% for the 64GB version. (9 out of 13)

Hey Rob, just listened to item 369, as soon as I heard you mention the Apple TV may be on sale through the Apple Store app, I took a look and sure enough, there it was. I was so excited I immediately dropped it in my cart and checked out with Apple Pay. That's when things got weird..

Just before I hit "pay now", I noticed a few problems in the billing info. It had the wrong billing address, no shipping address, the email address was way wrong and the phone number was my fax number! I spent about 15 minutes trying to figure this out. Apparently it was using my main contact card for the info, but it pulled most of my contact info from my linked facebook profile. I don't post my address there so there was no shipping address. And the default email address was a 10-digit number followed by @facebook.com. I've never even checked that email address, didn't know I had it..

The billing address was coming from the Wallet app, and that was wrong too, as it was also pulling info from my contact card but the wrong info, my work address and my fax number.

Anyway it was a real mess to clean up and I just wanted to give your listeners a heads up to check their Wallet account info before making another purchase. FYI, Apple Pay has been working fine and I use it almost daily, never had a problem even though the address and phone number have been wrong.

Love the show Rob, thanks. And I'll let you know when I get the Apple TV!

    Regards,

    Aric B

    piper-pounds-the-table-time-to-get-ready-for-an-iphone-7/

I  really wanted to hold off on iPhone 7 rumors until at least after the iPad Pro came out - and I have ignored a couple - but this set of rumors on the iPhone 7 was in Barrons - so that makes it the first credible news source to really publish an iPhone 7 rumor - and they likely did so because it came from Piper Jaffray’s often wrong Gene Munster.  Except Barron’s does not pay enough attention to realize how wrong Uncle Gene usually is.

For future - oh my - that was wrong reference - lets go over what Gene is saying now.

    quote

While we are still almost a year away from the next iPhone launch, we believe it is worth considering what the next cycle may bring. Given a number change cycle, we expect the iPhone 7 to sport a unique design from the iPhone 6/6S. As many have speculated, the addition of 3D Touch may provide Apple with a way to eliminate the home button on the phone and use the additional space to make the screen bigger or make the device smaller. One barrier to this could be Touch ID, which is integrated into the home button currently. Apple would need to move the Touch ID reader to potentially the side of the phone to remove the home button. We believe a home-buttonless iPhone has a 50% chance for the iPhone 7. Another area on which we believe Apple may focus is battery life. Looking at Macs over the past few years, Apple has close to doubled battery life for its Macbook line up (largely 5 hour battery to ~10 hours). It has achieved this through more efficient processors and software. We believe battery life is one of the biggest areas of potential improvement and one that might be most welcomed by customers. Finally, a sapphire screen has long been rumored for the iPhone. Since Apple now uses sapphire on the Apple Watch, it could make sense for them to adapt it to the phone. We note that Apple is using the stronger aluminum from the Apple Watch Sport for the iPhone 6S case.

I love the Home buttonless iPhone has a 50% chance for the iPhone 7 - as in - either it will or will not happen - yup two options - so a 50 / 50 chance.

Ok - we will see how he did later on - or at least reference back when he changes his mind a few times.

And We are very happy to have Casper back as a sponsor - Casper is an online retailer and manufacturer of Premium mattresses for a fraction of the price you are used to paying.

Have you ever purchased a mattress by sitting on it for just a few minutes at the store only later to regret it.  That happened with us for my Oldest son's mattress.  We thought we purchased a good mattress - but oh my - we learned we did not - we would lay down with him to get him to go to sleep and as we tried to get up he would hear us and feel us moving and would wake up - very very frustrating. But we were stuck with the Mattress -  However With Casper you get a 100 day risk free trial period.  You don't like it you get your money back and they come and pick it back up and donate it to a charity.  That said - the mattress they sent is great and is definitely not going back. It is a mix of Latex foam and Memory foam. No noisy springs to wake up your kid or significant other when you get up to sneak some girl scout cookies from the pantry.

Casper did an incredible job on the engineering and feel of this mattress - the nights I record episodes - the boys go and sleep with mom - so when I am done I can sleep on his bed now and my back is not all out of whack in the morning.

But just as important as quality is Pricing and the pricing is really great.   Twin Mattresses are just $500, they also have Twin XL for $600, Full for $750, Queen for $850 and then King and Cal King - for  $950.  That is less than half the price my Parents paid for their King sized mattress and they can't stand their mattress.  Like I said you have 100 days to return it risk free. And if you go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code tii - you will save $50 off those prices.

This is an american made mattress with delivery right now for the US and Canada only and it is free delivery. When said mattress is delivered - it is from UPS - in a squarish box that you think no way is there a mattress in there - But you get a cool little tool to cut open the package and the mattress opens up and expands to form.

A lot of us will be getting the new Apple TV when it comes out and many of us will have it on our bedroom.  So you can throw out that spending 1/3 rd of our time in bed stat - it is going to be more.   And for the cost of an iPad but not as much as the iPad Pro - is it not worth getting the best nights sleep possible - and that is what you will get with Casper or what your kids will get.  Again to Save $50 off of the prices I mentioned go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code t i i - all lower case on the promo code.  again casper dot com / tii - promo code tii to save $50 - thanks Casper for the great mattress for my son and for sponsoring this show.

    Hi Rob,

    >> Today I confirmed with Apple support in a phone conversation with Donald regarding case number 968519956 that there is a issue with the iphone 6S plus regarding playing a podcast and using the iphone camera app.  It is not possible to take a picture and play a podcast at the same time.  Donald said Apple is aware of the problem and working on it.

    >> I was wondering if you can try it? Play a podcast and open the Apple camera app. Be sure ahead of time the camera is set so "live" mode is off.

    >> Thanks

    >> Jim K

Hi Jim - I have the 6+ - not the 6S+ - so no live photos - which means no video recording.  Remember live Photos is actually video recording before and after you hit the shutter button - so really it is recording video as soon as you open the Photo app if you have live photos enabled.

Any video recording application - will stop the podcasts app when you open it.  That is what Live Photos is - and that is why when you open it with a 6S or 6S+ - it will stop the podcasts app.  Actually it will stop any and all Audio apps - including the Tii App and the music app and any other podcasts app - from playing when you switch to the Video option on the Camera - even when you don’t hit the record button.

Not sure this is really an issue - as much as it is normal operating procedure for the iPhone - this has been true for a long time.  Apple does not want you to be able to record the audio of something playing in one app - via the Camera app or any other video or audio recording app.  It is about not letting you use your iOS device to illegally record music.

So surprised Apple said this was a bug - it is really a feature.

    Hi Rob,

I just updated my iphone 5s to the latest software update IOS 9.1. I am a voiceover user and once I updated my phone my voiceover voice has changed to a wierd form of the english USA language. Hi Rob

I wanted to highlight a Kickstarter project to you and your listeners. It has been a long time since I have pledged as I have been burned once or twice. Nonetheless, I pledged for Quarter as soon as I saw it. The company (Steelconnect) seems legitimate and this project is not overreaching. For $9 dollars I should (hopefully) have it by December. Check it out!

    Regards Mitch

And this is a different project then the one featured on the last show - which was also called the Quarter.  This one is on Kickstarter - and what it is the quote 1st apple pencil holder unquote.

This project has a goal of $4,632 and so far has raised $3,117 - and has until November 21st at 1:28 PM CT to be funded.

    Pricing is currently at $9.

What this is is a holder for your Apple pencil that plugs into your lightening port - it is a simple plastic holder - and your Apple pencil lines up along the bottom normally - but if you need to charge the iPad - there is a pass through for the lightening cord - and another place to hold the Apple Pencil.

This does answer the question many asked - where do you store your Apple pencil.

One thing I would make sure if you get this is - how securely your $100 Apple Pencil stays put in the holder and how securely the holder stays put in the lightening port.  Sure would hate to spend $9 and have it cost me $100 when my Apple Pencil falls away - NOW I am NOT saying that will happen - just saying if you get this - you best check it before taking it out for a spin - Just in case.

Search for Quarter at kickstarter dot com.

As long as there has been a Facebook app - there has been one word that you could always use to describe it - Sucks - as in it sucks the life out of your battery.  Like 4 seven year olds sucking down juiceboxes.

Well good news - It seems Facebook has finally figured out what was going on.  According to Facebook the new version that just came out fixes the CPU Spin issue that was hidden deep in its network code.  What is a CPU Spin issue you ask.

Quote  “A CPU spin is like a child in a car asking, ‘Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?’ with the question not resulting in any progress to reaching the destination, The version released today has some improvements that should start making this better.” unquote - Ari Grant ” Facebook engineering manager.

Seems Facebook was recently called out by some prominent bloggers about the issues with their apps - which if you listen to this show - you know we have mentioned more than once issues with the Facebook app draining batteries.  Actually went back and found the first references was on Ep 271 - 99 episodes ago - that was from June 2013.  Glad to see Facebook was all over that issue like a duck on a cheeto.

One of the things I ask people when they say they have a fast draining battery is - do you have the Facebook app open.  Glad we can finally put this issue to bed.  99 Episodes ago - Wow.  Glad Facebook really cares about us iOS users and that they use the app themselves.  Not.

    Hi Rob,

Can Anyone recommend a good leather case for the iPhone 6?

I know there is StilGut leather cases that have a tab and also have a stand function. Does anyone have any experience with this or any other brand and have general advice?

    Thanks,

    GK

    Hello, Rob,

Always an early adopter, living on the edge, ignoring your sage advice,  I have found so many bugs it iOS 9.1 that it needs insecticide: App Store, Apple Music, and Pandora work poorly, if at all, and my car is tossing out "unsupported" error messages like never before.

Apple's last few rollout a have been dodgy at best. Lots of time spent performing restores and looking for workarounds.

While I don't mind and often find it interesting to play around with this type of challenge, most users just want their phones to work the same as before an update. This one step forward, two steps back thing must be tiring them out.

    Regards,

    Jeff in Burbank

    Hi Rob!

Just wanted to let you know that our favorite tethering tweak PDAnet seems to work fine on a jailbroken iPhone 5s running iOS 9.0.2.  Using 5.4 GHz channel 40"  Hide tether option is on.

Thanks to all that sent in links to this next one.  Which is about a jailbroken app called Plum-o-Meter - which allows you to place two plums on the screen of an iPhone 6S or 6S+ and use the force touch as a kind of scale.

Now if you thought iPhones were popular in hollywood before - now they are really going to be popular - once word of this gets out to Lindsay Lohan - you know she will be getting one of these.  And it is not going to be to weigh plums.

    Rob,

I noticed you haven't updated the artwork for the podcast now that iOS 9 is out in the wild. Is this in the works, or what?

    Looking forward to it,

    Jonathan from NOLA

Hi Jonathan - Yes it is something I am looking at updating - a few people sent in ideas - but nothing jumps out at me yet.  I was even messing around with back in June and July playing with the 9 in iOS 9 to see if I would work it in - but again nothing that I was in love with or even moderate like.

Last year I did not update until November.  Looking like the same this year.

But if you or anyone else have some ideas - please send them along to today in iOS at gmail dot com.  And it is even better if they are created on an iOS device.

Chances are I will just go back to the 2013 artwork.

    Hi Rob,

Just want to let you know about my experience getting a new 6S. I upgraded from a 5s and the difference is staggering, particularly in speed. I got it from the Apple store using their upgrade plan and they set the phone up with my ATT service so I would have service for the rest of the day until I got home. The calling and texting worked fine but I could not get Siri to respond. It didn't matter if I used the HEY Siri prompt or if I did the old-fashioned finger on the home button...the screen would just wink on and off and no Siri. I called Apple help when I got home and they told me to upgrade from 9.0 to 9.1, which solved the problem. Everything is working fine now and I'm really enjoying the phone.

    Regards,

    Jeff from Redmond Washington.

OK - Now lets finally get into what was discussed at the Apple quarterly conference call today.

Tim did a fiscal year 2015 review.  Mentioning that their growth in revenue >50 Billion vs 2014 was greater than the revenue of over 90% of the fortune 500.  Oh Snap.

    Apple Q3 2015 - Quarterly Report Summary:

Rev = $51.5 Billion (vs $42.1 Billion a year ago quarter and $49.6 Billion last quarter)

Total Cash = $205.7 Billion (Up $2.9 Billion for the quarter from $202.8 Billion)

    Last Quarter Sales:

iPhones Sold = 48.1 Mil (vs 39.3 Mil a year ago quarter and 47.5 Mil last quarter)

iPads Sold = 9.9 Mil (vs 12.3 Mil a year ago quarter and 10.9 Mil last quarter)

Mac's Sold = 5.7 Mil (vs 5.5 Mil a year ago quarter and 4.8 Mil last quarter)

    Misc Notes:

Apple Pay and American Express will be supported in multiple countries around the world starting with Canada and Australia shortly.

30% of iPhone buyers last quarter were Android switchers.

So with iPhone sales at 48.1 Mil units - closest to the mark was Robert Paul Leitao - with the Braeburn group.  And that number did again come in below the average estimate of 48.7 Mil iPhones sold.

However the $51.5 Bil in revenue was just above the average estimate of $51.38 Bil.

On the last ep I predicted 9.6 Mil iPads sold - and Apple did come in a little above that at 9.9 Mil iPads sold.  and actually a 10.4 Mil unit sell through as they decreased channel inventory by 500k. So not bad - again this is the quarter when we get some real idea on how things are going - which means the Jan quarterly call.  Will be interesting to see where Apple stock is tomorrow.

And if you check in the Tii App - for Ep 370 - you will see a bonus PDF that goes over the past iPhone and iPad sales charts. The key one is the last one - it shows the past 4 quarter sales for both the iPhone and iPad and how they have done since launch.  The iPhone kept growing - but now the iPad is in clear decline.  Will the iPad Pro be enough to reverse that?  Probably not - but maybe it will be enough to flatten it out.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote Yes, yes, Apple makes an iPad, but does it make a movie? We will prove that it’s not who makes the tablet first who counts, but who makes it better.”

Howard Stringer, CEO, Sony, 31 Aug 2011

Howie baby - you are missing the big picture - Apple does not make movies - but they have a really tight relationship with Disney. And I think Disney has this little family of movies Called Star Wars - plus many of the Marvel Movies to boot - Just Sayin

The thing that lets me know I am doing a good job reporting on the show - is when I have Apple Fan boys saying I am too hard on Apple and non-fan boys saying I am too soft.  Here is an example of the later from the Google+ community.

quote - I just listened to the latest Tii podcast - ep 368 <Insert unimpressed emoticon.> Let me preface this by saying I usually enjoy the show and respect what Rob does for us as a community. However, I strongly disagree on Rob's dismissive reporting of "Chipgate". Rob takes the obvious position of an Apple shareholder who doesn't own a Samsung-based A9 6s. I understand his position. but many anecdotal examples add up to something which can't be easily dismissed  unquote

This again from the Google+ community and from Ces.  He was complaining about really bad battery life with his unit and Some of us tried to tell him politely he just had a defective unit and to take his iPhone to Apple to get it replaced and that the ChipGate issue was very overblown.  But sadly he just wanted to rail against anyone that said there is no ChipGate.  He got so worked up - that When Consumer Reports released their report - which 100% agreed with what I said - that ChipGate is bogus - and I should also mention Apple replaced his unit - as we suggested was needed - He refused to apologize and then went on a I am getting myself banned from the community rant / post - which I was happy to oblige.  So Ces is no more in the community.  Sorry folks you do need to keep it civil.   FYI - someone giving you advice you don’t want to hear is not being uncivil.  Getting upset at good advice and being mean in your posts - that is uncivil.  Bye Bye

Per the Consumer Reports Article My only concern is that they only used two iPhones - one with Sammy inside and one with TSMC.

Other than that what they found in real world testing is pretty much that the two units perform the same way within 1 or 2% of each other.

    Or as they conclude

Quote Smartphones are as complicated as the people who use them, so it’s impossible to say with certainty that the battery- and temperature-performance differences we measured in this chipgate testing will be consistent in every imaginable scenario. But if iPhone 6s users are ever disappointed with their phones, we’re confident it won’t be because they bought the model with the “wrong” chip unquote

So again - stick a fork in ChipGate - as that “story" is dead.  And yes I am deliberately being dismissive of this schlock story.

    http://www.macrumors.com/2015/10/21/apple-releases-ios-9-1/

Apple released iOS 9.1 - the first Single Dot update for iOS 9.

Downloads were very slow by Wednesday Evening.  As always I would suggest you wait a week.  But at a min wait until your weekend before updating if you need the device.  And also - follow the update instructions in the Tii App. Ok - that all said - I did go and update some devices.

For the iPad Mini Retina - My Wife’s iPad - it was still on iOS 8.4.1 - so it was the full update - over 1.8 GB and over 2 hours to download.  I did that one via iTunes on the computer.

For my iPhone 6+ - I did the over the air update and it was much quicker - but I did it early in the day when it first was available.

Ok so what has updated - well according to the notes the following:

Live Photos now intelligently senses when you raise or lower your iPhone - so that live Photos will automatically not record these movements. - Which I had more than one person email in about hoping Apple would make a change like this.

Other updates include Apple giving you the finger - as in giving your the Middle finger - literally - as in the Middle Finger is now one of over 150 new emoji characters added with full support for unicode 7.0 and 8.0 emojis - because you can never have too many emoji’s

There is the infamous “Improved stability” especially with regards to CarPlay, Music, Photos, Safari and Search.  Hmmm no mention of the podcasts app.

There is improved performance while in Multitasking UI

9.1 fixes an issue that could cause Calendar to become unresponsive in Month view.

It fixes an issue that prevented Game Center from Launching for some users.

Resolved an issue that zoomed the content of some Apps.

Resolves an issue that could cause an incorrect unread mail count for POP mail accounts

Fixes an issue that prevented users from removing recent contacts from new mail or messages

Fixes an issue that caused some messages to not appear in Mail search results.

Resolves an issue that left a gray bar in the body of an audio message

Fixes an issue that caused Activation errors on some carriers

Fixes an issue that prevented some apps from updating from the App Store.

By the way when going to update apps - you will get a message that says the iTunes store terms and conditions changed and you need to accept them.  It seems you no longer have to sign over your first born.  That clause was replaced with something about the removal of your left ummm - kindey - yeah - not going the other place.

Some initial feedback from Tii Listeners -

From Tosin O - quote So iOS 9.1 brings  news to the UK, but still no "around me" search options as part of Siri suggestions. Is that it or are we to expect it at some point? unquote

    From Myron Uecker

Quote - I'm very happy to report that it at least seems that music is now working properly in iOS 9.1. That is to say, Only Offline Music really means that now. I can once again use Shuffle and I can plug my phone into my car radio without it starting from the same song every time.

Unfortunately there may be another bug. I received a phone call and made one while driving. Both times after hanging up music didn't resume until I hit the volume up on the radio. I'm not sure what that was all about.

    unquote

From Ryan B quote The update to iOS 9.1 went very smoothly for me šŸ“± I love the new emojis  unquote

From David L who said it maybe best quote 150 New Emojis, now I can annoy even more people!!  unquote

So I will say this - if you just can’t live without the 150 new emojis - then you must update now.  But for others - I still recommend waiting a week as always - any issues - I will mention on the next episode.  But so far things are looking good.

Not there is one group that definitely should not update to 9.1 - and that is the Jailbreakers - and 9.1 did break the latest jailbreak.

For those that do not listen to my advice and update - please let me know your experience - good - bad or mehhh.

    http://9to5mac.com/2015/10/21/apple-watch-tv-os-2-0-1/

ok - iOS 9.1 was not the only OS update today - there was also Watch OS 2.0.1 - the first double dot update for Watch OS.

As with any double dot update it is about the bugs man - the bugs.

Apple said the following about the Watch OS update

Quote This update contains new emoji characters unquote - well dang - you had me at emoji - oopps - sorry back to the update Quote performance improvements, and bug fixes including

Fixes an issue that could cause software updates to stall

Fixes issues that were impacting battery performance

Resolves an issue that prevented a managed iPhone from synching iOS calendar events to Apple Watch

Addresses an issue that could prevent location information from properly updating

fixes an issue that could cause digital touch to send from an email address instead of a phone number

addresses an issue that could cause instability when using a live photo as a watch face

resolves an issue that allows the sensors to stay on indefinitely when using siri to measure heart rate

    unquote

As always to update Watch OS - go to the Apple Watch app on your iPhone - go to settings and then Software update and scroll to the bottom and tap on Download and install.

But first make sure your Apple watch is in range of your iPhone connected to wifi AND that the Apple watch is connected to its charger AND that is charged at least 50%

I Would like to thank Boll And Branch again for sponsoring the show.

There is a new Apple TV going on sale the end of this month - and that means for many - more time in Bed.  And Boll & Branch offers luxury sheets at an affordable price.

The sheets from Boll and Branch are made from 100% organic cotton - because organic cotton is incredibly soft.  And the sheets get softer each time you wash them.  We have had ours for three months now and they are incredible and keep getting even softer. You’ll get the nicest sheets you’ve ever owned for about half the price of what stores and boutiques would be charging for sheets of far lower quality.  I really could not believe how excited my wife was to get these new sheets.  And the box they came in and the individual pouches for the sheets and pillow cases - well the presentation was incredible and very Apple-Esq

Until Boll & Branch, no one challenged the department stores - so they’ve been overcharging you for crummy sheets forever and there just was no where else to shop.  But Now you can buy right from boll and branch dot com  - with boll spelled B O L L.  Folks You can kiss those retail markups goodbye.

These sheets are only sold online at boll and branch dot com - you can’t buy them in any stores.  That is how they keep the pricing low and free of markups.

But here is the best part - don’t take my word for it - try them out yourself for 30 days risk free.  Boll and Branch is so sure your going to fall in love with their sheets that they give you 30 nights to try them out.  If you don’t love them for ANY reason - they will take them back and refund you without any hassle at all.

And Folks with the new Apple TV coming again that means more time spent in your bed - so make sure you have the best sheets to go with the best Set-top box.

If you order right now - they will give you $50 off a set of sheets plus give you free shipping.  Just go to Boll and branch dot com and use promo code Tii - that right $50 off by going right now to B O L L   A N D   B R A N C H  dot com and using the promo code T I I

    VOICEMAIL - Joe_FL_answr_to_bluetooth_work_around

    Hey Rob!

I've got two things for you today. The first is about the emails you've received about iOS 9 making people change their pass codes to 6 digit instead of 4. I'm surprised no one has mentioned this at all. With iOS 9, Apple reordered how the setup of your phone works. Before iOS 9, you went through these screens: Language > Region > Wifi > Location Services > Set Up > Sign In > Touch ID > Passcode > Apple Pay > Siri > Screen > Disgnostics. In iOS 9, they changed the order of this, now you perform Touch ID and passcode before restoring your backup. But the big change, is that the passcode screen shows 6 digits. Well, before, if you didn't want that, there was a link above the keyboard that pops up saying "Set up Passcode later." It's still there, now it says "Passcode Options", and include Alphanumeric, 4-digit, and no passcode. Mind you, this is only if you restored your phone on iOS 9 and above.

Secondly, for those of you who are having the grey bar on the messaging app in the text field, I spoke to Apple about this, and they said their software engineers were aware of this issue and were resolving it in iOS 9.1 updates, and that it is not a hardware issue, that no replacement phone would resolve. For now, the only workaround is force quitting the app and relaunching it

    Regards

    Brandon

    Hey Rob,

I’m a long time fan who’s owned every iPhone since the original. Since I’m a serious lover of mobile technology, I also dabble in Android (though I always come back to iOS). Anyways, on episode 368 you discussed  single-core benchmark tests and mentioned the HTC Nexus 9 as the only Android phone to beat the iPhone. Well, the Nexus 9 is actually a tablet not a phone so the iPhone can remain undefeated in your mentioned single-core speed test. I’d also like to mention that Android manufacturer’s processors thrive on multi-core benchmarks, not single-core. It is in this that the iPhone loses to most Android flagships. Now, this means absolutely nothing since just because a semi-truck has a bigger motor than a Civic doesn’t mean the semi will beat it in a race. This is just to say that iOS is the fluid, beautiful experience it is not because of specs or benchmarks, but because of the optimization of the hardware and software.

We are now over 2,500 members in our Google+ community and growing.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from John Clarke who posted the following question

    Quote

Question for the community about the Podcast App... Are downloaded podcasts using data for playback if not connected to wi-fi?

I have an iPhone 6 Plus for a work phone and listen to podcasts almost exclusively on my commute to and from work. I subscribe to several podcasts and have them download over wi-fi while at home or at work. Last month as a company we had over $1200 in data overages and we have been warned that we will be charged for excessive data usage. If I remember correctly, in order to listen to podcasts I need to have "cellular" turned on.

I don't want to take a hit if I can avoid it.

    Unquote

I responded saying - No turn Cellular data to off - go to Settings - Podcasts - cellular data and turn it off

Also while there turn on - only download on Wifi

That will ensure at least for the Podcasts App you are not using any cellular data

Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts and comments in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Here's an iOS 9 tip for using an external keyboard. If you hold down cmd for a few seconds, in many apps you will see an overlay that lists what cmd does in that app. Wouldn't you know, g+ doesn't do anything, but it works in most other apps, including Mail, Home Screen, all Microsoft Office apps, etc.

In fact, I learned about it from the release notes for the latest versions of Microsoft Office apps and decided to try it.

Apple’s quarterly conference call will be next week on the 27th.  So that means next episode we will be going over what was reported.  And likely - hopefully will be up late on the 27th.

I will go over then what people predicted for iPhone and iPad sales.

But if I were a betting man - I would put the number of iPhones sold last quarter at - 49.2 Million units - just above where they were last quarter.  Per iPad sales - 9.6 Million units.  We will see how far off I was vs how far off the analyst were.

I will say this - good or bad - the important quarter is the one we  are in.

Apple made news this past week - when word broke that Apple had yanked over 250 apps - that were gathering personal info against Apples requirements.

Here is what Apple had to say

    quote

We’ve identified a group of apps that are using a third-party advertising SDK, developed by Youmi, a mobile advertising provider, that uses private APIs to gather private information, such as user email addresses and device identifiers, and route data to its company server.

This is a violation of our security and privacy guidelines. The apps using Youmi’s SDK have been removed from the App Store and any new apps submitted to the App Store using this SDK will be rejected. We are working closely with developers to help them get updated versions of their apps that are safe for customers and in compliance with our guidelines back in the App Store quickly.

Per Apps on the Android that do the same thing - do you know what they call those apps on Android - Yup - the just call them Apps -

Surprised Apple did not catch it earlier.

Ok - since the last episode Apple has announced new iMac's - A New Magic Trackpad, A new keyboard and A new mouse. Combine that with the iPad Pro - and iPad updates - and why again did we not have an October event?  It really baffles me.  They had plenty to announce at an October event.

The new Magic Trackpad supports force touch same as is on the track pad of the Mac Book Pro and MacBook.  Need to get that.  probably will just put it in with the order for the new Apple TV.

    shipping-next-week.html

Speaking of which Tim Cook was a guest / star at WSJ D Live.  In his appearance he said that the Apple TV would go on Sale on Monday the 26th with shipments starting later in the week.  I think someone might have leaked that info to him.

If Apple holds true with past new items for sale - then at 12:01 AM PT on the 26th they will go on sale.

Hopefully there will be more info before the end of this week - but if you want the new Apple TV be ready to purchase it on the 26th.  And be sure to use the Apple Store App - as that tends to go live first when new products are released.

If I / when I get more info on this - I will put it out as a push notification and maybe a special post in the Tii App.  Was really hoping that info would have been available prior to this episode - but nothing yet on the Apple site.

    31:30

    http://www.apple.com/tv/compare/

So lets quickly go over the new Apple TV again.  There are two versions - one with 32 GB of storage selling at $149 and another with 64 GB of storage selling for $199.

I personally recommend the $199 unit - as the extra storage while maybe not critical now - means down the line it is more future proofed.

The new Apple TV - supports Siri,  An App Store, and comes with an official remote that has motion sensors.  But supports 3rd party game controllers as well.

Per the new Apple TV Remote or as they call it the Siri Remote - it has a glass touch surface,  dual mics for Siri, An Accelerometer and Gyroscope. Bluetooth to talking to the Apple TV and IR for talking to your TV,  And you charge it via a lightening port.

The New Apple TV supports an App store - which we have been waiting for for ever .  And internally it has an A8 processor like in the iPhone 6 and 6+.  It has the same length and width specs - but the height did go up.

Again be ready with your iTunes Store app come 12:01 AM PT on the 26th and keep an eye out for more info about that coming soon.

Tickets went on sale for the Force Awakens this past Monday - when they did the entire nerd-dom came crashing down on Fandango’s website like Jabba the hut on a bowl of M&M’s and it was not pretty.

And when I realized the site was going to likely be down for some time - I thought hmmmm - where have we seen something like this before - - Oh yeah - pre-ordering Apple gear and what works there - the Apple App store app - so I went on my iPhone and looked for a Fandango app - and downloaded it - and created a quick account and was able to purchase tickets in a matter of a couple of minutes to the first showing on Thursday December 17th for me, the wife and our two kids.  Score. Dad looks like the hero - getting the kids to the movie a day before all their friends.  And well dad is stoked as well.  And YES - YES I will be dressing up as a Jedi once again.

But this all fits in here because I want to say Kudos to Fandango - their app is great - and really really well designed.  I know it is more fun to be snarky - but every now and then - I like to call out an app and give them kudos for a job well done.

I think going forward I will be doing all my movie ticket buying via the Fandango app.  It even puts the tickets right in the Wallet app - just like a southwest ticket or other ticket.  If you have not purchased your tickets yet for the Force Awakens - I would recommend you check out the Fandango app to do so.

    Hey Rob,

Long time listener - love the show!  I have been using my Apple watch since I received it in June.  One of the features I use all of the time is the fitness app.  It's nice to have all of my daily exercise information recorded and saved so I can view it later at my convenience.  I was wondering if you or one of your listeners know of a way to export all of that data out of the activity app so that I can share it with my doctor.  Every time I go in for my annual check up, the first question my doctor asks me is "how much do you exercise".  It would be nice if there was a way to show him the actual data.  Is there any apps out there that can plot this information out?  Thanks for all you do, and thanks for all of the feedback from the listeners both on the podcast and the google + community.

    Hi Rob,

I finally pulled the trigger on an Apple Watch (black, sport edition), but the first thing I went to do, I find out I can not do.  I want to be able to display the seconds on a digital face.  You seem to be only able to get blinking colon separators, but no ability to display the actual seconds.  This is pretty frustrating as I believe digital watches have been displaying seconds for many, many decades.  I would even be ok with a complication that would just do a running second count, but I can't find that.  Do you know why Apple might have not enabled the ability to display seconds in the digital faces and if there is any work around or complication that can help with this?

    Love the show!

    Thanks,

    --David

    Hello Rob,

Before I ask my question I feel like I am obligated to tell you how much I enjoy your show. It is the one of the few shows I listen to the day it comes out and never fast forward through.

Thanks for the show and all the hard work that comes along with it.

My question is on the Apple Watch, how can you tell if a given app is a WatchOS 2 app and will be native on the watch.

    Thanks,

    John B.

For a kickstarter project this week we have quote The World’s first automatic iPhone 6/6S aluminum Wallet unquote - by Gresso - nice name guys.

This one had a goal of $10k - and they are at $18k - so irregardless of the name they are funded - and if you want in on this you have until Nov 19th at 9:01 AM CT.

So what is this case - well quote The iPhone 6/6S protective case with a secure and hidden wallet. Made of aircraft-grade aluminum. Patent pending mechanism. unquote

Ok - still not getting it are you - it is actually a pretty sweet looking case - that when you slide the back of it up - a draw opens up where you can have a credit card or drivers license or some cash.

Pricing on this while they last for the early bird is $59 - then it goes to $79  - and they claim it will sell retail at $120.

Delivery is slated for December and that would be Dec 2015.

If you search for aluminum wallet or Gresso at kickstarter you can find out more info.

Another startup project I want to mentions the Quarter - it is a fast charging power bank.  It uses the Mag safe connector from your macbook to charge the power bank and it can be charged in as little as 15 minutes.  So if you ever had one of the instances where you need to leave the house and realize your phone is almost dead and you grab a battery pack and it is almost dead - well this is for you.

It is just $39 - look for the link titled - QUARTER: A FAST CHARGING POWERBANK in the show notes for ep 369.

There was an article from DXOMARK - which is a photography site - that did a review of the new iPhone 6S for Photos and Video - and then gave it a score and then compared that score to other leading android devices - and the results were not as good as many other sites had made out the new cameras to be.  Many other sites said the iPhone 6S is by far the best - where as this site said by best if you mean 10th best - sure.

But here is the thing - they ranked the iPhone 6 and 6Plus ahead of the 6S.  So call me a little surprised if not downright  skeptical.  But you know - since I have been known to be quote dismissive unquote of things lately - I thought I would bring in an expert to talk about this issue - Here is part of a recording sent in from Mike at the PetaPixels Podcast - the official podcast for a Photography site with an alexa rank of 4,219 vs dxomarks rank of 13,392 -  lower is better.  Actually before DXOmarks trashed the iPhone 6S - its alexa rank was over 20,000 - so not saying they did anything nefarious to get better rankings and drive traffic - because you know that would be me being quote dismissive unquote

Again - I brought in Mike to give his thoughts on this.  Here we go.

    Rob,

Just a quick note about the Podcast app since the latest update.

It seems very difficult to maintain my un-played podcast list now that Apple has updated to IOS9.  Before the update I had "tile" style and now I'm forced to use the "list" style for organizing the my un-played podcast. It's quirky and after a few weeks I still don't get it.   Am I the only one who hates the Podcast update?  What's your take or others.

    Love the show!

    Thanks,

If you did not update to iOS 9.1 and want to jailbreak AND you have a windows PC - then Pangu has a jailbreak for you.

Go to en.pangu.io - link in the show notes to download the software to jailbreak your iOS 9.0 to iOS 9.0.2 device.

As always if you do jailbreak - let me know how it went and what your favorite Jailbreak tweak or App is.  Please note - I did see some people say that not many tweaks and apps have been updated yet to support iOS 9.  So if you are jailbroken and at iOS 8.4.1 or earlier - do you update to iOS 9.0.2 - while Apple is still signing it and jailbreak - or do you wait.  My suggest would be to jailbreak to 9.0.2 - again make sure you get that version and 9.1.  And then upgrade to  9.0.2 while it is still being signed by Apple - and then do this jailbreak - because there is no telling how long until 9.1 has a jailbreak available.

    Hi Rob,

I have a problem that is frustrating because it makes no sense. Over

multiple versions of IOS, currently 9.02 and with 8.4.1 and earlier,

multiple IPhones, multiple SIM cards from different carriers, hotspot

connectivity randomly works and does not work using wifi to connect to

it. The computer or other device, and I have tried multiple different

devices Apple and PC. The device will always establish the wifi

connection to the IPhone, but it will or will not actually have

internet access. Sometimes it has it for a minute and then it

disappears. It will report that the connection is limited or has no

internet access. Both mean the same, it just says it the two different

ways in different places. The phone will always have internet access

just fine when this happens. I have reset network settings, of course

rebooted, turned hotspot off and back on, turned wifie off and back

on, rebooted the phone, rebooted the computer, turned wifi on and off

and on on the computer. Plugging it directly in with a cable to the

computer results in a connection that works fine. The IPhones have

    been IPhone 6 plus.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote “In the PC world, with fewer ways of differentiating HP’s products from our competitors, we became number one; in the tablet world we’re going to become better than number one. We call it number one plus.” Unquote

Eric Cador, Senior Vice President of the Personal Systems

    Group, Hewlett-Packard, 21 May 2011

Eric if by One Plus - you mean somewhere in the Others category - then job well done.  Because you are not on anyones top 5 or even top 10 list for top tablet manufacturers.  But then maybe 1 plus was just the percentage of the market share your were going for.

    http://techcrunch.com/2015/10/08/apple-says-battery-

    performance-of-new-iphones-a9-chips-vary-only-2-3/

I want to read a quote from Apple before we get into this next story - with quotes around story.

From Apple in a statement given to Techcruch - quote

With the Apple-designed A9 chip in your iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus, you are getting the most advanced smartphone chip in the world. Every chip we ship meets Apple’s highest standards for providing incredible performance and deliver great battery life, regardless of iPhone 6s capacity, color, or model.

Certain manufactured lab tests which run the processors with a continuous heavy workload until the battery depletes are not representative of real-world usage, since they spend an unrealistic amount of time at the highest CPU performance state. It’s a misleading way to measure real-world battery life. Our testing and customer data show the actual battery life of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, even taking into account variable component differences, vary within just 2-3% of each other.

    unquote

Ok now that we have the FACTS out of the way - what is the story that was running wild last week.  Well it was that if you had the Samsung processor - it could provide anywhere from 50 to an hour and 50 minutes WORSE battery life - and that was enough to launch the Chip-Gate type articles.  But see - those posts out there about the major difference in battery life - NOT one - not a single one of them were based on actual measurement of virgin units doing real world testing - but rather on using an app that estimated what battery life would be - and that App by the way - was pulled by the dev when they said it had issues with the new devices - and has since been put back up.

Any way - any stories you read about Sammy’s chips being worse than TSMC - yeah - NOT one of them are based on real measurements - like Apples statements are.

There is nothing to see here with regards to battery life. Battery Life differences between the two are not a story - or more accurately are not THE story.

The real story here is that APPLE is using two different manufacturers for their A9.  And that more than anything else is probably how Apple has been able to keep shortages down this year at launch - and how they just launched in 40 new countries last week - and how they will be in over 120 countries by the end of the year.

This is a good thing.  Not a bad thing that Apple is able to have two manufacturers for the A9.

Now it does suck if you find out your device has Sammy inside.  Because it feels a little like you are sleeping with the enemy - but specs wise - it is not an issue.

    07:49

    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/lirum-device-info-lite-system/

    id591660734?mt=8

If you want to find out which chip you have - it is simple - kinda - sorta - once you download a free app.

The app is called Lirum Device Info Lite - link in the show notes of course.

Open said app once installed - tap not now - to close the pop-up ad.

Then at the bottom of the screen you will see info for the Model along with an alphanumeric code.

The TSMC chips for the A9 for the 6S and 6S+ are

    N71mAP  and N66mAP respectively.

For Samsung’s A9’s for the 6S and 6S+ they are

    N71AP and N66AP respectively.

So if you see the M in the number - it is TSMC and if not it is Sammy.

Again that is for the 6S and 6S+

    08:46

    http://www.wired.com/2015/10/iphone-6s-a9-battery-life/

There is also a good article in Wired - that goes over this - the title of the article is quote It doesn’t matter which A9 chip your iPhone has - get over it unquote - and yup that sums up my feelings on this as well.

Look link baiters want nothing more than there to be another Apple Gate with this launch - and they will trip over themselves and you to rush out articles based on nothing - YES BGR I am looking at you.  That is the problem with many of these schlock tech reporting sites - and make no mistake - BGR is a schlock site with very questionable reporting.  They are fine if you are looking for tutorials - but get into breaking news or rumors - and their quality plummets down to Digit-times levels.

Now they are not the only ones guilty of this - essentially anyone reporting ChipGate as a real issue - are guilty as charged.  Again - this whole thing started because no one took the time to do real world testing and they SOOOOO wanted there to be an issue.

Ok - Soap Box I do get down off of now.

    09:53

Ok - I have been mentioning I would update my iPhone update sheet - and I am finally ready to go over this.

For those new - what I have been doing over the years - is looking at all the new features available for each new generation of iPhone and then scoring each new feature and getting an over all upgrade score.

For example the iPhone 4 vs the 3GS - had a total score of +30.  The 4S - was a +29.   The iPhone 5 was just a +25.  The 5S was a +30,  The 6 and 6+ were a +24.   And the new 6S and 6S+ surprisingly came in much higher then I initially would have expected with a +33.   That makes this current Generation the biggest increase for any generation iPhone.

My scoring is 100% determined by me.  So yes it is not overly scientific.  It is based on a score of 1 or 2 or 3.   A plus 1 is for a minor tweak or new feature.  a 2 is a new feature that is something that clearly improves over past gens - and a 3 is a significant change - in the feature set or functionality.

For Example the A8 Processor - got a +1 -  where as the A9 gets a +3.  The performance jump we talked about last episode almost makes me want to give it a +4 - but that is not an option.

4K vidoe recording gets a +3.   As does Video playback support.  the 12 MP new camera - also a +3.  As is the improved 5 MP front camera.

3D Touch - gets a +3 as well - not so much for what it can do today - but how it will be used in the future.

And the semi-Water Proof features added - gets a +3.  This will be evident to anyone that drops it in a pool or bathtub or urinal - and it keeps on working.  The addition of the gasket and seals for the connectors is huge. No Apple is not talking about it - but it is there - and it is a big big upgrade - especially for anyone that has ever had an iPhone dropped into water.

On the + 2 side of things - there is the 2GB of RAM.  This should improve the over all UI and what you can do with the iPhone.

Live Photos gets a +2 as well - as it is a nice new unique iPhone feature.

I gave Deep Trenches a +2 - because once you look at some of the new photos with the 6S and 6S+ - you realize there is some nice magic going on - and this is a big part of that magic - that allows the extra MP to matter.

And the improved LTE / Wifi get a combined +2.

On the Plus 1 side we have Optical Video Stabilization - which is just for the 6S+.  There is also now Playback Zoom for Video - that gets a plus 1.   Almost gave it a plus 2.

Faster Touch ID gets a +1

    As does Tougher Glass

And finally Stronger Aluminum gets a +1.  Wanted to give it a Plus 2 - but being annoyed by bendgaters - is not justification enough to bump it up - so I left it at +1.

Overall as I said to start - this Generation of iPhones is the biggest update ever.  And goes along with S level updates being the better updates as we have been saying on this show for a long time.

If you would like to see the entire chart - including the new features added to past iPhones going back to the iPhone 4. In the Tii App for Ep 368 - go to the bonus content - and I will have it in there as a PDF.  The second page has the updates with the scores.

I will also have some links in the shows notes articles going over some of the improvements and testing for the iPhone 6S and 6S+.

But here is my overall recommendation - if you have a 5S or earlier - and you are ok with going with a larger size phone - then now is the time to upgrade. The only reason not to - is if you are like my wife - and you want the smaller size iPhone.

If you have an iPhone 6 or 6+ - I still find it hard to recommend an upgrade - but it does make more sense to upgrade to the 6S from the 6 - then it has for any other generation upgrade.  So if you have upgraded each year in the past - this year - well you likely already upgraded.

    http://www.redmondpie.com/dual-core-iphone-6s-smokes-

    galaxy-s6-note-5-other-android-phones-in-initial-benchmarks/

Now of course we do not live in a world with just iPhones - that would be a purely utopian world.  Nope - we also have Android devices out there - and when it comes to comparing the iPhone - we can’t just compare this gen to last gen.  Nope - we also need to look at how it does against those other phones.

When it comes to benchmark test - that is easy - the iPhone 6S and 6S+ smoked - toasted - destroyed the comp.  Not even close. Single core speed tests for the A9 came in above 2,500.   The closest Android phone was the HTC Nexus 9 - coming in at 1887.  That was actually the only Android phone that came between iPhones with the A8 and A9.  The A8 came in at over 1600.  Yes - all other Android phones tested - were slower than the 1 year old iPhone 6 and 6+.   Next on line was the Galaxy S6 edge at 1309.  Wait a second Rob- last week you said the 5S was at 1,399 - oh - good catch - so really all other Android Phones were slower than the 2 year old iPhone 5S.  Sweet.  The Samsung Galaxy S6 came in at 1207 and the numbers drop from there.

So looking at bench mark tests the iPhone 6S and 6S+ smoke and destroy all competition.  And the 6 and 6+ and 5S beat everything else except the HTC Nexus 9.

    16:58

    http://www.businessinsider.com/the-cameras-on-the-new-

    iphones-set-a-new-standard-for-smartphone-

    photography-2015-9

But of course smartphone use is a lot more than just bench mark tests.  There is also how people use the phone - and in reality that most often is as a camera.

Business insider has a nice article on how the iPhone 6S Plus did vs the Galaxy Note 5.  Make sure to have your ad blockers installed before heading over.

So how did it do.  Quote the iPhone 6S plus is the new reigning champion of smartphone cameras.  Many smartphones that take pictures with accurate color tend to look gloomy and dull - even in bright sunlight. but the iPhone offers an excellent balance of color accuracy and enticing brightness unquote.

And that is why Deep trenches gets a +2.

The iPhone 6S and 6S+ are the fasted smartphones and have the best cameras - and if you are on an Android Phone - then it is definitely time to join the Utopian future known as iOS.

If you have an older iPhone and are on the fence about upgrading - really the only two reasons I can give for not upgrading for those on the fence - Size - that is if you want the smaller 4” form factor - and Money - if you don’t have an extra Grand laying around then wait until it is time for your carrier subsidy to kick in - if you even get one of those anymore.

    18:38

    Hi Rob,

Your show is one of my regular podcasts. I appreciate ALL your timely and informative subject matter.  Always accurate and trusted. Best thing you do is let us know when to install upgrades.

I have also found your advertisers to be what you say they are ...  Especially Harry's

    Stay well my friend

    Dave

I want to thank Harrys for sponsoring this episode - if you go to harrys dot com - that is h a r r y s dot com and use the promo code t i i - you will save $5 on your first order.

In the past I have talked about Price and convince as factors - and well lets through them out this time and talk just about performance. I was someone that used the highest dollar blades - I purchased blades  like some of my ex-girl friends ordered dinner - look for the most expensive price and buy it.  But here is the thing - None of those blades ever gave as good of a shave as my harrys blades.  Nor did they last as long either.  This is not luck on Harry’s part - they went and found a German blade factory that is almost 100 years old and purchased it.  And by it - I mean the factory not just the blades.  Harry’s owns the most important part of the razor - the blade - and because of that they can give you the best shave possible at a great price.

But the quality does not stop at the blade - they also have a Great foaming shave gel.  And most importantly If you look at what it is made from - you will not see industrial chemicals you can’t pronounce.  The ingredients include Licorice Root extract, a blend of Cucumber and Aloe - It really is nice to shave with something that would never have been featured in a Toxic Avenger flick.

And then there is their After shave lotion - it feels great and it smells wonderful it and the ladies will definitely give you compliments.

I am 100% a full fledged Harrys customer - have been for well over a year - that is my blade, my shaving gel and my after shave lotion - nothing else will touch my Head and face.

    Hi Rob,

I heard Coby mention that since he had upgraded to iOS 9.1 beta 1, he now has to enter a 6 Digit Passcode, I too had this on my new iPhone 6S Plus and also on my Sons iPhone 6 after a restore of his data from his iPhone 5S.

But if you go into Touch ID & Passcode and opt to change your Passcode, enter in your Current Passcode it will then ask you to set a new Passcode, but will also give you an option of Passcode Options, at the bottom of the screen, so if you select that, you can then change the passcode back to a 4 Digit Passcode.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi Rob,

In item 367 at 1 hour and 45 seconds in, you read a email from Dan in Vancouver indicating 2 issues with IOS 9. The first was with texting where the field in which you would normally type a message would become populated with a prompt to record a spoken message with no apparent way to dismiss it. I have a 6 plus and my wife has a 5 and we both were experiencing this after we installed IOS 9 and the only way I found to temporarily fix it was to force quit the text app and reopen it. I have since upgraded to IOS 9.0.2 on my 6 plus and the issue is still there. In both cases it happens randomly. If anyone knows a fix please share it.

    Regards,

    Steve in Texas

Hi Rob how do you get the podcasts ap to automatically download in the back ground?

    Regards, Conrad

Go to Settings —> Podcasts —> Turn on “Background App Refresh”

Also there may be a bug with the Podcasts app - so while you are there - turn OFF - “Delete Played Episodes” as it may be deleting just slightly played episodes or episodes downloading while listening to others.

Here is an email I received on this.

    Rob

While downloading Ep. 0367 via cellular data, I decided to finish listening to 0366. Download progressed fine and upon reaching the end of listening to 0366, the Podcast App marked both episodes as "Played Episodes to be Deleted".

I had not even touched the play button for Ep. 0367 so it seems we might have another bug?  Maybe listeners can chime-in if they have experienced the same.

    Regards,

    PaulG in Lawrenceville

We are now over 2,500 members in our Google+ community and growing.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from Kent Kersey who posted the following question

    Quote

Does anyone know of an easy way to see which songs/albums you've downloaded to your iPhone on Apple Music?

    Unquote

And Marc Lobart answered where to find that.  First you open the Music App - next at the bottom select “My Music”  Then in the middle of the screen look for the red text - Might be Artists or Albums or Songs or Genres or Composers - depending on what you had it set to.  Tap on that and you will get a pop up with those options to choose from - select Songs - That will close the pop up - next tap on songs again and then at the bottom of that pop up - select the toggle switch - Only Offline Music - turn that on.  And that should close the pop up.

That will then list just the music you have on your iOS device.

Also from the Google Plus community was this post from Faisal Keylani who linked to an article:

This per Apple releasing the A1633 iPhone 6S - which is Apples unlocked SIM-Free - not for any specific carrier - world phone. This is now the answer to the question - on which iPhone should I get if I want one unlocked.  The A1634 is the 6S+ version.

    29:34

    http://www.redmondpie.com/unlocked-t-mobile-vs-sim-

    free-iphone-6s-6s-plus-whats-the-difference/

There was a nice post on RedmondPie - that goes over the difference between the A1633 and 34 vs the other iPhones.

Especially with regards to the T-Mobile unlocked phone - the new ones have one more band for LTE - Band 30 - which is not available for the T-Mobile phones.

In the US for example when you go on line to buy an iPhone - you will now see the following options for Carrier

    AT&T

    Sprint

    T-Mobile

    Verizon

    and now - SIM-Free

Delivery of the 6+ Rose Gold Sim free for 128 GB is listed as 2 to 3 weeks.

Looks like it is one to two weeks for other options.

I think it is pretty self-explanatory - but when you buy an iPhone that is SIM-Free - it is exactly what you get an iPhone with no SIM card.

But really it comes down to if you want an iPhone no strings attached and will work in more places world wide then any other phone - the A1633 and 34 - are the phones you are looking for.

Again - just choose the SIM-Free option.  And pretty surprising to see this on sale in the US within a month of Launch.

NOTE - this does not mean they will work in China. They have a different system there all together.  But they should work Globally except in China.

I should also welcome the following countries to the iPhone 6S and 6S+ party - as they all started getting the new iPhones on October 9th and they are

Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dorne, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Greenland, Harrenhal, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Maldives, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Taiwan

But remember - is you are looking for a world phone - the SIM Free version is the one to go with.

    seeds-fifth-ios-9-1-beta/

Apple is keeping up with its rapid release of the betas.  With iOS 9.1 Beta 5 now available as of Monday October 12th.  It looks like the full release of 9.1 is on schedule for later this month.  We know it is scheduled for later this month as 9.1 is needed to set up Apple TV from an iOS device.

Changes this time around seem to be new emoji’s  because evidently Apple thinks we can’t get enough of them.

    New Wallpapers

    Developer support for live Photos

and iPad Pro - Apple Pencil Compatibility - but not sure how anyone can prove that last one - since neither device is out.

There is also the so called - stability / speed improvements.  Which is just a generic place holder for the 2nd beta and later.

    6s-users-report-boiling-hot-home-buttons/ar-AAfbD0D

Here is a strange one - and have not heard of any listeners with this problem.

It comes from Msn.com and the post is titled - iPhone 6S users report boiling hot home buttons.

And well you guessed it is about users reporting Touch ID - that is too hot to touch.  Not 3D touch but 3 Alarm Touch.

This according to some on Apples support forums - is just the touch ID that is getting hot - and if they held down the home and power buttons together for around 10 seconds - after the phone restarted all functioned well again.

Which I find interesting - because the same ones saying the home button was too hot to touch are the same ones saying if you hold it and the power button down for 10 seconds the problem goes away once it reboots - either that or all the nerves in your finger are dead and you can’t tell it is hot anymore - one or the other.

That all said - as I mentioned I have not heard of this issue from any listeners - if anyone had a hot home button on their 6S - let me know.

And let me know if powering it down and back up solved the issue.

    http://www.marco.org/2015/10/09/overcast2

Marco Arment the developer of OverCast is doing something interesting - he is making OverCast free - as in completely free.  But Rob you say -it was already free - Yes - but many or the best features were locked behind an in-app purchase.  Not any more - now all the features are unlocked and free.

Marco is trying a new model where he asks for some donations instead.

So yes his smart speed and voice boost features are all unlocked now.  There are 3D touch shortcuts - and of course the Apple Watch App.

There is a play next by priority feature. Which is nice for those that like this show - make Today in iOS a priority and when a new episode comes out - which as you know can be any day of the week - and the new ep of Tii moves to the top of the list.

This is Overcast Version 2.0 as well - so there are new features - especially with regards to streaming content.  Plus lots of improvements to the app.

The thing I like about Overcast most - is that the features are with you the consumer in mind - and focused on helping making it easier to consume the content you know you want to consume - not trying to force content on you you never heard of or asked for.

So if you have lots of podcasts you listen to - and you have not checked out Overcast yet or recently - now is a good time.

If you are using the Overcast App - make sure to recommend the Today in iOS podcast.

    android-hack/index.html

Here is a fun Android Article - it appears to hack an Android phone - you just type in a really long password.  This is one of the oldest hacks in the book - it is called and overflow error.  And with Android devices running the Latest Version of Android - Lollipop - yes it is vulnerable to this - hey Password is not the password - what should we try next hack.  Once you overwhelm the device with too many characters - it crashed to the open home screen.

According to google - someone that has your phone and does this - can quote view contact data, phone logs, SMS messages, and other data that is normally protected. unquote.  Yeah so you know nothing major or anything.

Google did release a patch for this back in September - which means most Android users will be getting that patch - oh - yeah - never.  But the ones that do - it will probably be in 2016 at best before they see it.

One of our sponsors today is Trunk Club.  visit trunk club dot com slash tii

Trunk club takes the hassle out of clothes shopping.

What trunk club does is a few things - first they ask you what your style is - what type fit you like and what your sizes are - and then they put you in contact with a personal stylist - Mine is Mary - Hello Mary.  Then you talk - and discuss what kind of cloths you are looking for - pants or shirts or jackets or belts or shoes or more - and Then you get a trunk sent out to you full of clothes that fit perfectly and look great - that you get to try on - on your own - in your house - no rush - no pressure -   You get to walk around where you get a real feel for the cloths.  I had three different Sports coats slash blazers sent in my trunk - All of them looked great and were of course from the best brands - I then went and tried those on with my different shirts I already owned - I then was easily able to figure out the one that worked best with what I already had - AND also was different from what I already owned.  So now I have a great new sports coat that really compliments what I already owned - I did wear that sports coat At the Online Learning Conference last week.  Yes - I am officially a trunk club customer and it could not have been any easier.  I have worn it to the last three shows I attended and every time I have received un-solicited and very positive comments about the sports coat. Winner.

One thing I really liked about the Trunk Club experience is that I was able to try on the different items and see how they did or did not differ from what I already owned.  Which was nice as it helps to keep you from buying duplicates. you simply put the items back in the trunk you don’t want.

keep what you like - send back the rest - and there is no pressure to keep anything. No one looking at you as you put items back in the trunk.

Folks this is NOT a subscription service - you only get the trunks you asked for.  When you are done - they have already included the return shipping label and tape for the trunk.  And they give you a number to call for quick pick up by UPS.  All of this can be done without stepping outside your house.

Right now their entire styling service is FREE - even the shipping is free - you only pay for the clothes you keep - to take advantage go right now to trunk club dot com slash t i i  -  again that is trunk club dot com slash tii for a trunk filled with great looking and fitting clothes that you are going to love wearing.

Thanks Trunkclub for supporting this show and for helping me look snappy at the Online Learning Conference.

It takes me at least 20 hours a week to get this show produced.  That 20 hours a week is spent answering and sort emails and voicemails.  I do look at them all.  I spend  a good amount of time reading articles and researching for the episode. And it takes 6 hours min to get all the show notes done.  The actual recording takes about 1 hour for every 20 minutes of episode.  The typical evening I record episode is over 4 hours for the recording / editing / exporting / encoding / show notes creation and publishing.  For example tonight I started recording at 10:30 PM - and right now XX minutes in - it is XX:XX XM time.

Per voicemail messages - I have a folder I move them to - and then pull them out in usually what is a most recent in - first out method.  Meaning if I fall behind - and your recording does not make it on right away - with in the last 3 eps - chances are it will not make it on - until well at least the quiet periods between New Years and WWDC.  I went and looked in the folder - and there are over 1,200 voicemails in there.  That does not count the much much great number of emails.  So today I am going to make the rest of this episode ALL about listener feedback.  No more news - just listener feedback with most - the vast majority being voicemail messages.  That will clear the way for future feedback about the new Apple TV , iPad Pro, Apple Pencil and new keyboard case - all which will be coming between late October and late November.  The rest of the ep will be voicemails that came in since the iPhone 6S and 6S+ were announced and up until this afternoon on October 12th.  So essentially all come from the past 5 weeks.  But if I get over 90 Minutes before the Outro - then I will close it down for this week - and get to the others next week.

    Hi Rob,

Just thought I'd write in and mention that you can probably say "Hey Siri" without spelling it out for 2 reasons. 1) The "voice training" feature seems to be working very well. I tried this with my wife and Siri wouldn't activate on my phone unless I asked, and 2) I believe the feature is disabled when playing audio, as when connected via Bluetooth to Sync in my Ford, I can't get it to activate when audio is playing, but it works fine when I pause the stream.

Really digging my new 6s Plus. Here are a couple of tricks I've discovered. On a 6s or 6s Plus on iOS 9, 3D Touch and hold on the keyboard to enable a trackpad to move the cursor when typing (similar to 2-finger drag on the iPad). Also, I've noticed in iOS 9, with the screen locked, plugging in a headphone jack now turns on the lock screen with a slider icon for the Music app in the lower left (similar to the fashion used by the Handoff feature) you can slide up to launch into that app. Thanks for the show, Rob.

For all of us US T-mobile users that signed up between September 1st 2013 and September 16th 2015 - It appears that t-Mobile’s partner Experian - had a slight ummm data breach.  which I mean for a company that is doing credit checks and has your personal info and social and other details - Yeah I mean I can see how they let that happen.  Please note the issue here was not with t-mobile but with their soon to be vendor that does credit checks.

And again I said us - because I signed up with them September 2014.  Sweet.

apparently all effected will be notified in writing - This according to t-mobile CEO John Legere - who to his credit did not hide when news of this broke - he actually went on to twitter and answered peoples questions.

He also said that T-mobile customer will also be notified when you logging your mytmobile.com account.

He did say if there is no notification when you sign in all is fine.  But best to take advantage of free protection services being offered by t-mobile right now.

There is a link in the show notes to the page T-mobile put up about this.  Again - check your account and see if you are affected.

    http://betanews.com/2015/09/20/adblock-plus-defends-ad-

    blocking-applauds-peace-and-backs-crystal-for-ios/

I have not said much on the Adblock feature in iOS 9 - and the controversy that was brought up by Marco Arment - mostly because I was trying to research on this and see if my gut feeling on this was wrong.

I went and even attended a webinar about Adblocking from the Folks at TapInfluence - who are definitely Anti-AdBlocking.

But here is what I thought was interesting in the webinar - in one slide they had - that was titled Why People Block Ads.

The main reasons were 1. Ads Obscure content,  2. Privacy 3. Bandwidth 4. Slow Website Load  5. Because they can.

But they missed a big reason for mobile - Battery Life.  If you are browsing on mobile devices and downloading lots and lots of extra content - sometimes 10 times or more content without ad blockers then with ad blockers - then adding an ad blocker if you do a lot of surfing the web makes a lot of sense.  Because it is not like you actually look at those ads - so you will be missing nothing - and saving battery life to boot.

By they way I am not going to build up to where I stand - I will state it right now - I am all for ad blocking - the issue as I see it is that Ads have become such a burden on web browsing - that they make the entire experience bothersome - I sometimes I find an article that is really good and I have to debate on if I even want to link to it - because it is so overrun with ad crap.  Pop ups - redirects to get to the article - or video ads that start on their own - it is all really annoying and as mentioned also a drain on your iPhones resources.

Per the issue with Marco Arment - if you are not aware - he had a very successful ad blocker he released called Peace - it was so successful it made it to the number one paid app in iTunes app store for a couple of days - and then Marco pulled the plug - because he felt guilty for suppling users a tool that he felt would be used to bypass ads and cost content creators money.  Also it seems he may have been beat up by his publisher for doing it.

See that is the other side of this argument - that without the ads there would be no content.

Marco said on his blog post quote

I still believe that ad blockers are necessary today. but I've learned over the last few crazy days that I don't feel good making one and being the arbiter of what's blocked,

    unquote

Marco’s app used a data base from Ghostery to decide what to block.  So technically he was not the arbiter of what was being blocked - he was more like the Executioner of Ads - and Ghostery was the judge handing do the sentence.  But in either case - Marco did not feel right swinging the sword that was being used to cut off the heads of Advertisers.

I am saddened to see Marco had pulled the app - and disappointed.

But I am happy he proved there is a huge market for this type of product - and that means those sites like iMore and BGR and others that are littered with ads and scripts and pop up and pop overs and pop wherevers - they need to understand that there are limits to how much people will endore when it comes to hijaking the browsing experience.  And since he showed there is a demand for it - there are now many others more then willing to pick up that sword and start a swinging.  And good for them.

Lets talk about how bad some sites are out there - I mentioned the  iMore site before - the load time for the main page is 22.43 seconds.   BGR’s load time is 23.09 seconds,  For comparison - Daring fireball site loads in 2.11 seconds, Marco Arments site - Marco.org loads in 1.8 seconds and Today in iOS loads in 1.52 seconds.  But I will work to get that down to under a second.

Look there are ways to have sites that are not so user unfriendly - and the reason again for Ad blockers is because of sites that just chew up so many resources and it slows down the browser experience quite a bit.

    https://brooksreview.net/2015/09/content-blocker-test/

There is a good review of Ad blockers at brooksreview dot net.

Interestingly his results were close to mine when looking with no Ad blockers active.  As he also tested the iMore site. not saying they are getting a name for a bad user experience - but..  Rene - you might just want to rethink things over there.  Just sayin.

Anyway they found with no blockers on iMore loaded in 18 seconds.  With the best ad blocker that was reduced to 2.3 seconds - that blocker was 1Blocker

Daring fireball loaded in 2.2 seconds with no blockers and 1.3 seconds with the best blockers - Peace, Crystal and Selenium.

He tested a bunch of other sites as well.

His results came down to this - for the fastest Ad blockers.

    1.  1Blocker was the fastest over all.

    2. Ad Block Multi

    3. Adamant and Blockr 1.0.1 tied for 3rd.

Now here is one issue - 1Blocker whitelists The Deck Ads by default - which means you need to add a custom rule to block those. That said - Right now - 1Blocker which is free - is the one I am using and testing.  By the way once you install the Ad blocker - go and launch the app on your home screen - this will allow it to run and get the updated list of sites to block.  then click on start using - and click the big button to turn on.   Then go to settings - safari and turn it on.   Oh and note there is an in app purchase to allow you to block more then one type of content at a time.  There is a block ads switch, a block trackers switch, a block twitter widgets, and so on. As a free app you only get one item.  You have to spend $2.99 to block all or multiple categories.

There is also a nice list of Ad blockers over at the loop insight.com

Once you install an Ad or really Content blocker - go to Settings then Safari and scroll down to Content blockers - and flip the switch to enable / disable your content blocker of choice.

Here is one piece of advice I have seen mentioned many places - running multiple different Content blockers at once does not make things faster and in most cases slows things down.

Again - let me know what Content blocker you have settled on or decided against - 206- 666- 6364 - that 206-moon-dog - or send an email to today in iOS At gmail dot com.

    http://appadvice.com/appnn/2015/10/will-losing-its-apple-

    developer-account-hurt-ifixit

I had a this next item sent in from a bunch of people - some made at apple and some taking Apples side.

And that is about iFixit - Getting a dev unit for $1 and then going and tearing it down and here is the important part - putting up the video and post about the tear down.

Because of that Apple said you broke your developer agreement - where you said if you received the unit you would not report about it.

My Opinion is this - APPLE Had to revoke their dev license.  I know I joked about devs sending in their reviews of the new Apple TV - or actually not to. Wink Wink.  But In this case iFixit accepted the terms of the $1 unit - and then went and broke those terms - they even said they knew it could get them booted.  And really Apple again had to to send the message - nope you can’t do that.

This is not talking a little about a new feature in iOS 9.X beta - this is a full fledged tear down and posting of video of said tear down - of a device they explicitly agreed they would not do that.

So again don’t be mad at Apple - they just did what they had to do.

    15:12

    https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Apple+

    TV+4th+Generation+Teardown/49046

Ok - since I was not one Apple sent a review unit to - I have no qualms talking about the iFixit tear down.

So what did we learn - Well essentially not much.  I mean nothing worthy of getting your developer license revoked - that is for sure.

It just verified a lot of what was already talked about by Apple per the device.   The Optical audio out is gone.   The micro USB port is replaced by a USB C port.

One thing that was new and we learned from the tear down is that there is 2 GB of RAM - which makes sense - as the biggest argument against too much RAM is the battery draw - but since this is not mobile - battery drain is not an issue.

So Apps should run very smooth on the apple TV 4th gen.

Overall they gave it a repairability score of 8 out of 10.

We also are hearing from those that did not keep their lips sealed - that The new Apple TV - will support two 3rd party remotes and the Apple TV remote at the same time.  So a max of 3 connected players at any one time.

This my kids will be bummed about - as they like to play up to 4 players at once on minecraft and their NBA game on the Xbox.  Will be interesting to see if Apple makes an update at some point to allow up to 4 players at once - which really is kind of a standard in set top box games or even my Atari - just sayin.

    http://appadvice.com/appnn/2015/10/amazon-will-ban-

    sales-of-the-apple-tv-and-googles-chromecast-later-this-month

Another item a lot of people sent in about is the story that Amazon will be banning sales of the Apple TV and Google’s Chromecast later this month.

according to Bloomberg no Apple TV or Chromecast devices will be available for purchase on Amazon.com starting on October 29th.

Amazon is supposed to have sent an email to marketplace sellers with regards to the removal - and said no new listing will be allows and existing inventory will disappear later in the month.

    According to Amazon quote

Over the last three years, Prime Video has become an important part of Prime, It’s important that the streaming media players we sell interact well with Prime Video in order to avoid customer confusion.

    unquote

Now it is very possible that the 4th Gen Apple TV will be listed in the Amazon App store - as it could support Prime Video - if Apple allows the App in the Apple TV App store.  It could also be a move Amazon is doing because Apple rejected an Amazon Prime Video App - and this ban is a barging chip they are using to get their Apple TV app approved.

Or it could just mean Amazon is scared of the new Apple TV 4th gen and wants to get rid of all competition from their store.

I guess we will know more once a launch date is announced for the Apple TV.

    Voice Mail - Warren_FL_ordered_afterLaunch

    Hi Rob,

Just let you know, I ordered my IPhone 6s Plus at my ATT store on Sept. 14 (the 128 gig gold, but couldn't get rose color).

I was all ready for Oct 19th. I got an email from ATT on the 22nd of Sept. That the phone was shipped, I was shocked, I received the phone Friday afternoon, the official launch date. And ATT said they will give me $200 for my 64 gig 5s.

    Regards,

    Roy S

Warren and Roy - Thanks for the feedback - I wonder if that is something we need to be worried about - is it - Apple has better supply - or is it demand is much lower over all this time around.  Or Maybe it is just AT&T where the demand has dropped.

    Hi Rob,

Received the iPhone 6s Plus 128gig version on the 25th and found it to be laggy and occasionally the transition from one screen to another would hang and the icons would become super large, stalled in their transition to the next screen as if the processor was busy with other actions.

What caused me to return it was the failure to down load apps.  I set this up as a new device and was downloading the apps I actually use, when it stopped downloading.  The app held at the "waiting" stage.  This happened with any app I tried including the Apple Store app.

As a test I simultaneously attempted to download the Hilton Hotel app and my work iPhone 6 breezed through in moments and the iPhone 6s Plus began the process, circle loaded up l, but the data never downloaded.

I reset the phone and the problem persisted.

For $1000 that was enough for me, back it went.  I will keep the 5s for another year.  By then more devs will put the Taptic Engine to good use.

Love the show and always look forward to the next episode and listener observations and comments.

    Regards,

    Mike from Chicago

Mike thanks for the feedback and sorry to hear of your issue - but I think this next feedback

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from Wayne Henderson who posted the following question

    Quote

I love my new iPhone 6s, EXCEPT for the Touch ID, since it is now too lightning fast. Is there anyway to adjust it? Or, is it something we can hope for a fix in an iOS update?

    Unquote

Wayne - not saying that sounds like a oh poor me my new iPhone is just too fast post or anything - but.

Ok - here were some of the responses.

From Brian sullivan - he suggested using the sleep / wake button or an unregistered finger.

Chanah Vo says quote its extra extra fast. well all get used to it soon.

And other advice was to basically un-reigster a finger and then re-learn that finger - but just the middle and not the tip of the finger.  Then you can push the home button with the just the tip - hmmm seems there is a joke there I am missing - any way - just use the tip  — - - of your finger on the home button and it will wake up the screen to see your messages.

Or you know you could just downgrade to a slower older iphone.

Also from the Google Plus community was this post from Timmy T who wrote:

quote Google Fixed the Google+ app. unquote

To which Craig said he did not know it was broken - and Timmy replied saying the issue was you couldn’t read whole posts if they were long by just tapping on it - you had to tap on comment in order to read the entire post.

and now it is working correctly where you can see the whole post by taping on it.  So Timmy thanks for the heads up on that.

    http://social.techcrunch.com/gallery/15-hidden-features-

    tucked-away-in-ios-9/

I wanted to talk a little about a couple of features in iOS 9 - that some or many do not get.

    1. Is the Keyboard doubles as a trackpad - that is for those with iPads and the latest iPhones - but that requires 3D touch for the later on the iPads - just use two fingers at once on the keyboard to activate. this is a nice feature especially when typing a large text document or email and needs to move easily around to do some editing.

    2.  Picture in Picture Video - new iPads only.  To activate this  start watching a video in safari - tap on the video with one finger - then in the controls pick the icon that looks like a box inside a box.  You can then move that around as needed.

The box with the new video will float about any other apps you go to.  So this is a nice way to watch a sporting event and answer emails or comment in social media.  Like wow - I drove for 9+ hours to see this football game and it seems the team forgot to send their defense up here or their offense.  Oh wait - the offense is just late - a little to late.  Oh and look they missed the bus to Cincinnati as well. Just saying.

So sports fans rejoice - you can now watch your games and write snarky I just fell off the bandwagon type comments at the same time.

    http://www.applecontroll.com/2015/09/iphone-6s-teardown-

    treatment-specs.html

One spec uncovered by iFixit that I did not mention on the last episode is that the A9 Processor for the 6S and 6S+ is clocked at 1.82 GHz.  This is a nice speed bump up from the 1.38 GHz speed of the A8 processor in the 6 and  6+

If you look at the single core benchmarks for each iPhone generation - the A9 processor gives the biggest jump in RAW benchmark scores in the history of the iPhone.

From the 2G to 3G - there was no change - it was the same processor -  so that was the worst update.

We then go from a bench mark of 143 to 155 from the 3G to 3GS

And from 155 to 212 when we get to the 4.

The 4S - single core speed stayed basically the same coming in at 217 - but its dual core jumped to 410.  Still most apps run single core - so the 4S increase was actually not all that great or even noticeable for most applications and uses.  Still the 4S is being updated and supported by iOS 9 - so it is a nice little work horse of a phone.

The 5 Really sped things up jumping to a 707 score That is over 3.2 times increase.  That was the biggest multiple increase of any update and really offered the biggest noticeable improvement.

The 5S was no slouch jumping up to 1398 - almost a 2X increase.  If you increased from a 4S to a 5S - they were worlds apart.

The 6 however was just a small bump up to 1615.  Which is not much of an increase at just 1.16 times the past generation.  The 5S and the 6 and 6+ performance wise - are very similar when running most apps.

The 6S jumps up to 2556 - for a single core - which smokes all other smartphones by a wide margin and is 1.58 times faster than the 6.  The 941 jump in bench mark tests clearly is the biggest.  But from a % increase was the 3rd best in the history of the iPhone.  That said - if you are increasing even from the 6 or 6+ - the speed increase in noticeable - according to almost all reporting in.  In some cases as we heard before it is too quick.

I almost have enough data now to do my iPhone comparison chart update and give a score to the iPhone 6S and 6S+ - hopefully next episode - which is what I said last episode.  But the more I read on benchmark tests - the more impressed I am with what Apple did under the hood with this update.

It also make me very excited for the iPad Pro - and what it will be able to do.

For iBook users Apple has made some changes for what iBook authors can do - and this is good for both groups.

    From Apple quote

Updates for iBooks on iOS and Mac

Readers can now choose a new reading mode in iBooks called Gray. The new mode offers white text on a gray background and makes reading on an iOS device or Mac easier on the eyes.

Additionally, with the latest version of iBooks, readers can multitask. For example, you can read a book and browse the web with Safari, side-by-side.

With iBooks for iOS, you can use Spotlight to search for books by title, author name, or series name. This will show you books you already have in your library and books available on the iBooks Store - such as books that are more compelling then the one that made you want to multi-task with safari. If you already started reading the book, we will also show you how much of the book you’ve already read.

To get the new version of iBooks for iOS, update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to iOS 9. To get the new iBooks for Mac, install OS X El Capitan v10.11.

    Updates for iBooks Author

With the latest version of iBooks Author, we have improved the import function for Pages and Microsoft Word documents. For best results, you should use section breaks between chapters when you write your book in Pages or Microsoft Word.

If you’re using one of the EPUB templates, you can now also add Pop-Over widgets with text or images to your book.

In any case - if you are in China there is now more content available for you via the Apple Eco-system.   So please check out my free iBook - Podcast101 - A new copy is in the works - with the new iAuthor.   But the current one still has all you need to go from Zero to Podcast in one evening.

    monthly-android-security-updates-unrealistic/

Thanks to all that sent in this beauty of an article.

It is about a quote from HTC’s president.  This with regards to Googles announcement that they are going to roll out monthly Android security updates.  What was his quote - well that it is quote unrealistic unquote.  Seems unless you have an android phone purchased directly from Google and unlocked to any carrier - the idea of monthly updates is just not one HTC thinks can be supported - given that most devices also have a carrier level of software - and that means even if HTC does update their software for ALL their phones every month - then the carriers need to get behind that and make their updates / approvals on those changes as well.  And I would have to agree with HTC’s president - that is not only unrealistic - it is fantasy land - with Peter Pan - flying boats and ticking alligators type thinking.  there is no way the carriers are going to support updates for ALL the android phones they carry now not to mention the ones they carried last quarter or last year or two or three years ago.

Yet with the iPhone 4S - which was released 4 years ago - when there is a security update - all iPhone 4S owners can get it that day is they want.  That is a big big big difference between the iOS eco-system and the Android frago-system.

Hi Colby - I think you have a setting that changed.  I just updated my iPhone 4S to 9.1 beta 3 - and that is not the issue at all - that phone stayed on its traditional 4 Digit code. Actually for the iPhone 4S running beta 3 of 9.1 at least there is no option to even get to 6 digits on the pass code.

    Hi Rob,

I setup or trained my iphone 6S plus siri since day 1 when i got it and on episode 366 when the caller said “H E Y - Siri" my Siri did not wake up at all since it was not my voice (yayyyy) - worked as planned.

Anyway i love my iphone 6s plus and my wife and i are definitely loving live photos

    Regards,

    Jorge

Hi Rob! Philip from Green Bay.

Sorry I missed you when you came to town! I was camping in the Nicolet National Forest last week, only got back the night before the big game. Just catching up, and heard you were in town for Monday Night Football. I hope you had a great time in northeastern Wisconsin, despite the outcome of the game. The Pack and A-Rod were really on, that night!

    Oh, IOS stuff:

I had a 2nd gen iPad that no longer would charge, and had gotten extremely doggy anyway. Since I didn't want to buy a year-old normal size iPad, I was forced to choose between the iPad Pro and the new Mini 4. I'm so glad!! The Mini 4 is a beautiful machine, barely smaller screen than a normal iPad, very fast, very light, more portable, and half the cost of the Pro. The Pro looks cool, but way too big, heavy, and pricey for my needs. The Mini is fantastic!

Take care, Rob! Hope the Pack sees the Chiefs in the SB "L"!!!)

    Regards,

    Phil S

Thanks Phil for the feedback.  The trip went fine to and from - using Siri to get us around was easy.  One thing I really liked about the Apple Watch - was sometimes I would have a podcast going when driving - but the Apple watch would remain focused on the maps - showing upcoming turns and how far to the next turn.  Another thing I really like about the Apple watch - when using driving directions with maps - it vibrates when you should be turning.  It really is a great companion to the iPhone for road trips.

Phil per your comments on the Chiefs and the supper bowl - Yikes - it is looking really doubtful the Chiefs even make the playoffs - at 1 and 3 - we would need to go 10 and 2 to finish out the season to have a realistic shot at the playoffs.  And that is something that would be shocking if they could do it - as they just have not looked like a team that can win 10 out of 12 games.

Thanks to the folks running the kickstarter project - XI.i.con - the world’s most versatile iphone 6S / 6S+ companion  over at kickstarter dot com.

also worlds worst name - XI.i.Con - really.  Ok - ignoring the bad name - which ranks up there with iPad.  What they are offering is actually a neat device - and they have two versions - on for the 6 and 6S -  and another for the 6+ and 6S+

To better describe it they say - quote The magnetic dock, sync, and wireless charging all in one that also acts as a portable battery for your iPhone unquote

So in a nutshell - it is a case that allows for wireless charging in a dock that also doubles as an external battery pack.

There is even a proximity alarm for your phone and the dock.  When they get to far apart an alarm goes off.

They have a goal of $30k - and have raised $8k so far.  This one has until November 5th at 12:14 AM CT to be funded.

Pricing while they last is $49.  There is less than 20 left at that price - then it goes tot $54.

That price will get you the XI Case and XI Powerdock and a free 2X charging cable.   Delivery is set to December 2015.

Search for XI dot i dot con - at kickstarter dot com or in the show notes for ep 367.

    Hi rob,

I've been a long android user straight back from the nexus one, right upto to Samsung note 4, it's cost me a fortune keeping up with the so called flagship phones, so I decided a couple of months ago to try iOS. I didn't want to go all in on the iPhone 6, so I brought a second hand iPhone 5, WOW everything worked perfect, never had to keep doing soft resets everyday, I'm writing this on my new iPhone 6s 64 gb, I'm a huge convert now, I'll be having Apple TV when it comes out and the new mini iPad 4 for xmas, great show rob love listening and your little digs at android

Cheers from Wayne in Walsall UK

    Thanks Wayne for that feedback.

Apple released today the 4th Beta of iOS 9.1.  The new beta offers bug fixes to past betas of 9.1.  And also a larger emoji set and the option to disable contact photos in the messages app. and there are some new wallpapers as well.  Overall a minor update on the beta - with the bug fixes seeming the biggest part of this version of the beta.

    Hi Rob,

I installed 9, it was working fine, except my texting was acting weird kept on wanting to record a message when I tried to text instead of allowing me to type my message then installed 9.1, that seemed to fix that problem.  Today I installed the new notes and after I did I lost all my saved notes. Anyone know how to get my old notes back? They were on my iCloud account.  I googled the issue but couldn't find anything that helped.  Also, this is the first time since the first iPhone that I didn't order the new phone, I don't see enough in the iPhone 6s to upgrade yet.

    Thanks,

    Dan from Vancouver

    Hey, Rob!

For the guy with the gym membership card wanting an easier way to access his card on his iPhone, I have been using a very handy app since pre-passbook/wallet called Key Ring by Mobestream Media.  You can literally store any card you can think of, with many membership/loyalty cards already in its database.  And, for those that are not, you simply take a picture of the front and back of your card, and the app generates a scannable barcode. Also, with the Handoff feature in iOS, and most likely the gym you attend, the Key Ring icon will appear on your device's Lock Screen in the bottom left-hand corner when you approach the gym.  Hope you find this useful!

    Regards,

    JACOBÍ

    Hi Rob,

-A recent caller wanted a quick way to access his gym card as a photo. I use the CardStar app https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cardstar/id301460311?mt=8 to store all my loyalty and membership cards.  I keep it on the app home screen for quick access. It uses location to pull up my nearby cards. So, if I'm in Staples, it shows the Staples logo and other nearby card logos. I tap the logo and the card is displayed.

-I have an answer as to why users recklessly forge ahead with an IOS update soon after release. Reason 1: for the adrenaline rush. Same irrational high you get when putting money on the Raiders to win the Super Bowl or betting on a long shot in the 6th race at Santa Anita. Reason two: morbid fascination.

-A tip for Verizon customers: Most Verizon outlets in my area are contract sellers, meaning that the employees are not Verizon employees. My family makes a point of driving to an official Verizon store staffed by Verizon employees because we find the staff to be more knowledgeable and the service to be more comprehensive and of better quality.

Now for my dilemma: I am eligible for phone upgrade at the end of October and want to stay at the basic price point. This leaves me with these options:

iPhone 6s 16GB - Pros: latest performance and features Cons: Battery life (relative to 6S+), Photos will take up more space. Is there a way to choose a lower resolution than 12 megapixels?

iPhone 6 64GB - Pros: 4x the storage  Cons: Battery life, no 3D touch, new camera features, etc.

iPhone 6 Plus 16GB - Pros: Excellent battery life. Easier to read screens with my aging eyes.  Cons: No 3D touch, new camera features, etc. Too honking big?

IOS 9 promises smaller app sizes because downloads will not include graphics and code for other IOS devices and models but this will probably be better assessed over the next few months.

At this point, I am leaning toward the iPhone 6 64GB. How does iPhone 6 battery life compare to the iPhone 5S? I have been disappointed with battery performance on my 5S. I cannot go a day at work without having to go out to my car to retrieve my charging cable.

We exchanged emails some time ago in which we both foresaw, erroneously,  Apple moving away from 16GB entry level storage. It is becoming nearly impossible for most users to get by with a 16GB phone. I have to prune my apps, photos, podcasts and music constantly to maintain a little breathing space. I also run the Memory and Disk Scanner Pro app (99 cents, works great) several times a week to reclaim precious space.

Apple promotes the following fantastic apps as FREE! but they take up around 2.4 GB, in their versions for iPhone 5S. That is 15% of the storage space of a 16GB unit.

    Apps (for iPhone 5S)

    App

    Size

    Pages

    279

    Numbers

    757

    MB

    GarageBand

    628

    Total

And that is before any files are created with the apps. The 16GB level seems obsolete. I can't imagine that the difference in manufacturing cost of a 64GB  and 16GB units is $100. I suppose that Apple is subsidizing the cost other features with the premium price on storage. Kind of the way a Tylenol is billed at $27.00 while hospitalized.
