Thanks PHIL for the music and folks I will put the full song at the end of the episode.   I also want to thank MATT for sending in the Artwork for today's show.  MATT wrote the following:

    Hi Rob,

I left a voice mail recently about our pleasant experience buying new iPhones at the Apple Store in Greensboro NC. The photo was shot with my old 5S because I didn't have a case for the new 6S and didn't want to risk dropping it in the parking lot. However, I did massage this photo on the new phone with editing tools from the following apps: Google Photos, the native IOS Photos app, and Instagram. I am so comfortable using the Instagram editing tools that I often touch up a photo within Instagram and then post it but immediately delete it. This leaves a copy saved on my phone. The text was added with the AfterText app.

    Regards,

    Mudslide Matt S. Winston-Salem NC.

Thanks MATT, for sending in this artwork and folks you can see MATT'S artwork in the FREE Tii App via the BONUS button for ep 374 - or at instagram.com/todayinios and also as a stand alone post in the VIP section and at Facebook.com/todayinios.

    11/27/apple-products-demand-big-retailers-online/76463168/

Well the holiday shopping season has kicked off - and all indicators so far are that Apple products are once again in great demand.  That is not surprising at all.  Target issues a release in which it said iPads were top sellers in its store physically and online.  And I was at a Target store at 6:00 PM - and the biggest line was for Apple Products.

But one of those products in great demand from Apple that seems to have surprised a few of the anal-ists is the Apple Watch.  Seems with Target you could get a $100 gift card with an Apple watch purchase - and that essentially $100 discount was moving Apple Watches.

IBM’s Watson - the famed computer that beat Ken Jennings at Jeopardy - well Watson predicted that the Apple watch might become the hottest gift item during the holidays.

Actually Watson was making some predictions going into the Holiday weekend based on analysis of social media - and what it found was not just that the Apple Watch would be THE gift this year - but it was head and shoulders above all other “The” gifts.

It will be interesting come January to see what Apple has to say about Apple Watch sales if anything.  I would wager - it will be nothing.

    en/Adobe-Data-Shows-Top-Sellers-Black-Friday

Ok - so when people were not buying Apple products - they were using Apple products - especially iPhones and iPads to buy other products this holiday season.

According to Adobe - for Thanksgiving day and Blackfriday - Mobile shopping saw strong growth with 37% of all online sales.  Tablets were 15% and Smartphone 22%.  And iPhones and iPads drove the majority of those sales with 67% and 84% respectively.

That means Apple products were responsible for 74% of all mobile orders according to Adobe.

Another firm - Custora E-Commerce Pulse which tracks more than 500Million online shoppers said Apple devices accounts for 78.3% of mobile orders vs 21.5% for Android devices.

I think if you say Three quarters of all Mobile sales were on iOS devices - you will be safe.

Once again iOS users showing they spend more than android users over all - and much much more on a per user basis.

One thing the Adobe data did not indicate was how Apple Watch sales went.  According to Adobe the top sellers for the weekend were - Samsung 4K TV’s, iPad Air2, MS Xbox One, iPad Mini and Sony PS4.  Again Nothing about the Apple Watch. Hmmm - maybe people’s intent to buy the Apple watch per their comments on Social media - did not actually turn into actual sales.

    Hi Rob,

Square launches an Apple Pay-compatible NFC reader.

I pre ordered this long ago I hope I get it!

    Regards,

    Michael

Thanks Michael for the heads up on this - and as Michael said Square has launched an Apple Pay Compatible NFC reader.  The unit costs Merchants $49 - and you can reserve one online at squares website now.

It is portable as it has a built in battery.  And it has a magstripe reader for swiping cards from those that do not have Apple pay - also known as the have nots.

If anyone gets one and wants to let us know how it works - I would appreciate that feedback.

    http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/apple-pay-hit-mainland-

    china-by-february-1530369

And speaking of Apple Pay - It looks like Apple Pay maybe hitting mainland China around February.

Rumors has it that apple has 4 of the biggest banks on board.  And one dev that has seen the beta say that the logo for China’s UnionPay can be found.

It does look like Apple is finally starting to get some traction in rolling out Apple pay to more countries.  But as Apple is taking a cut of each transaction - that means lots and lots of negotiating in each country and with each bank.  Don’t expect Apple Pay to be in most countries any time soon.  Hopefully more info officially on this shortly.

    Into The Mail bag.

    Hi Rob,

I wanted to send a thank you to you for recommending Harry's.  I have been using another mail order shaving service and I was happy with their products and for the longest time didn't have any intentions of switching.  But listening to your honest impressions of your own experience with Harry's sold me on Harry's.  it only took 5 business days to get to Newfoundland (considered pretty remote by your standards).

So I opened up the packaging.  If you love iOS packaging, you won't be disappointed with Harry's.

So as a test of a blade, I like to run it down my cheek while it was still dry and to my surprise, it was nearly as smooth as my present blade was while using shaving gel.  So I knew I was in for a treat when I had my face properly lathered up and I was not disappointed.

Harry's suggest that each blade should be good for 7 shaves.  Well after 8 shaves it still was just as sharp I found out that my wife shaved her legs with it at least 6 times yet it still was in pristine condition.

With Harry's, I require many less stoked to get the job done resulting in less irritation.

In closing, i would like to thank you for your candid opinion on Harry's and directing me on a great purchase.

Now, off I go to cancel my other blade subscription before I end up with more blades from the other guys.

    Have a great day!

    Regards,

    Shane Cashin

    St. John's, Newfoundland

Shane - thanks for that feedback and glad to hear you are a harrys user now as well.

And folks with the Holiday’s upon us - Harry’s makes a great gift.  It is much much more considerate than a gift card.  Harry’s sent me the Winter Winston Gift set with Travel Kit - it has a great Travel bag, A beautiful cooper Razor handle, 3 blades and foaming Shave Gel - This is a really nice set and you can also add in custom engraving.  I really like the look and feel of the cooper Razor and the travel bag is great quality - which I will get to use this week when I travel to DC.

Harry’s will make a great gift for any man in your life.  And I can talk about that first hand as the recipient but not just from Harry’s - My birthday was last week and for my  Birthday my boys gave me a harry’s gift kit as well - It was the blades, Shave Gel & After Shave kit.  Like I said before I love Harry’s and my family knows it.  Thanks H & P.

Harry’s has other kits as well - with the Truman Set starting at $15 - which makes a nice gift for the company office pool or for a stocking stuffer.

And the best part they all use the great harry’s blades that come from their factory in Germany - after all a great looking razor means nothing if it does not give a great shave - and Harry’s definitely gives a great shave.

Go to Harrys DOT com right now.  And As a special offer to you, Harry’s will give $5 off your first order with promo code tii .  Don’t wait!  Free shipping for the Holidays ends on December 10th, so ACT NOW.  That’s H-A-R-R-Y-S DOT com.  Enter code tii.  And make sure to get that order in before December 10th.

Make every morning he shaves feel like a Holiday.

    VOICEMAIL - Brent_OKC_AppleTV_TVStorage

Thanks Brent for the heads up on the Apple TV App - TV Storage Info - three words well one abbreviation and 2 other words.  It is a simple free app that tells you what Apple should have had in their Settings App.  For my Apple TV I have a total storage of 57.15 GB - with 7.52 GB of that used and 49.63 GB available according to the App.

    Rob,

I've noticed a couple things regarding photo taking. When on a phone call and attempting to take photo, my photo screen is black and I'm unable to take the photo. When listening to a podcast and attempting to take a photo, the podcast goes silent. Are these instances normal? Is there a setting I need to change? Using native Podcast app and 6s Plus. Latest software.

    Regards,

    - Judy

    Hi Judy,

YES - both are normal and how they are designed to work with the 6S and 6S+

The reason is per Live Photos - as live Photos are really video and audio recording.  And when any audio recording application is active - it will kill any audio playing app.  But with the Phone app - Apple does not want to kill the call you are on - so it just kills the photo app instead.

    Hi Rob,

A friend of mine who has iPhones 5S and 6+ as well as the iPad Air 2 all running iOS 9.1 keeps receiving annoying pop ups when browsing with Safari (they seemed to start appearing after upgrading to iOS 9.0).

They can take various forms, for example informing him that his device is infected with a virus or that I have won some prize.

Quite obviously they are scams. In any case, they are seemingly impossible to dismiss. Sometimes they have a white dialogue box as tall as the message itself with "OK" and sometimes additionally "More" buttons. What would happen if he clicked one of the buttons - would malware be installed? - and what is the best and safest way to get rid of the pop up and continue to use Safari?  It seems you have to click on something.

A possible solution he's found is to double tap the home button and force close Safari, turn off mobile data or wifi as appropriate, go into Settings > Safari then clear history and dats, then launch Safari and close the offending page. But though it temporarily solves the problem it soon comes back. He had also done the normal reset network settings and even clean installs to no avail.

It appears to be a widespread problem. However I have an iPhone 5S running iOS 8.2 and don't experience the problem at all.

    Good show as always,

    Warmest regards,

    Alf, Sheffield UK.

Hi Alf - first make sure in their settings app for Safari - that Block Pop-ups - is turned on.  I never have this issue and I have it turned on.

Also look at getting a content blocker - like 1Blocker and have it set up to block ads. That should solve the issue.

If they are still having issues - they can purchase the in-app upgrade for 1Blocker - and then turn on additional items or you may try another content blocker.

Also I would recommend force closing out every open window for Safari.  In the Safari app on your iPhone in the lower right click on the two boxes - and then tap the x for all open windows / tabs until they are all closed out.

If you still are having issues after all that email me the URL of the site you are having an issue with.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from Stephen Williams who posted the following

    Quote

the right earbud of my apple headphones has stopped working. Any troubleshooting steps you guys can suggest or is it off to the genius bar to get a replacement?

    Unquote

I replied - asking if he plugged in a different set of headphones to see if the issue was his phone or the headphones.  If you do plug in a second pair and are having an issue - then get yourself some compressed air and try blowing out any debris that may be in the headphone jack.

As others said - if it is confirmed to just be those headphones with issues and they are under a year old - take them back to Apple - they will replace them for you.

But again if the headphones are ok - then a trip to Radio shack or Target or Office max for some compressed air is in your future.

Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts and comments in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Stan Bently said quote Still playing with it. See immense potential beyond the current iPad/tablet experience. Find myself using it more in portrait mode than I did with iPad. unquote

I should add - I find I use it almost exclusively in Landscape mode now that I have the keyboard for it.  Really can’t remember when I used it in Portrait mode.

The folks at iFixit got ahold of an Apple pencil and that is bad news for that Apple Pencil.

The long of the short - nothing exciting or shocking.

They gave it a 1 out of 10 for repairability - as it is not meant to be repaired - and when the internal lithium ion battery finally dies some day your only choices will be a display case for dead tech or the trash bin.

Not surprisingly there is a lot of tech packed in the small package.

    https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Smart+

    Keyboard+Teardown/53052

In Addition to the Apple Pencil - iFixit also got their hands on an Apple Smart Keyboard.

Unlike the Apple Pencil - the smart keyboard did not even get a 1 out of 10 - getting a 0 out of 10 for repairability.

They also commented on the confusing folding required for the cover.

    The conclude - quote

While durable, the keyboard is impossible to open without damaging, meaning no internal components can be replaced without destroying the device.

    unquote

So in my conclusion - don’t try to open up the smart keyboard and you should be fine.

    tv-amazon-prime-video-tvos-app/

Long time listeners know I am a big time fan of Philip K Dick - love his books and short stories and right now there are two TV series based on his stories going on.  Minority Report and The Man in the High Castle.  Minority report airs on Fox and is available via your Apple TV in the iTunes store.  But The Man in the High Castle - the better of the two shows - is only available via Amazon Prime Video - which means so far - not available on your new Apple TV 4th gen.  HOWEVER - rumor has it that may be changing.

Apple has said all along that the Apple TV App store is open to all - and while there are Amazon Prime Video Apps for the iPhone and iPad - which on my iPad Pro is where I watched the Man in the high Castle.  How good was it - well at the end of the 10th episode - my wife goes hey wait - did you just get me to watch a sci-fi show?  She just thought it was a fictional drama.  Any way I digress.

It seems Amazon has indicated that they are indeed working on an App for Apple TV and it might be live before the end of December.

Well hopefully they already submitted it - as this time of year - it takes a little longer to get things approved.

But folks once this is available - definitely check out the Man in the High Castle and then Vikings.

And with a little luck Apple and Amazon will give us an early Christmas present in the way of an Amazon Prime Video App.

    leaked-photos-emerge-of-apple-app-for-improving-iphone/

One rumor making the rounds this past week is about a possible new Apple App to help people get their iDevices fixed faster and with less need to go to a Genius bar.

It looks to be where the App will ask you some basic questions about your issues - and then give you some suggestions on fixing the issue.

It would also have the ability to allow you to Chat with an advisor - so you know it is late Friday night - you are single and alone - had a few drinks - a why not try chatting with an advisor on your iDevices problems.  Not that that would ever happen.

It looks like it can even help the users book a service appointment or even send in their device for service.

At this point it is just leaked screen shots - and it is not known if this will be a stand alone app or integrated into the Apple Store App.

    http://venturebeat.com/2015/11/29/why-an-iphone-7-

    without-a-headphone-jack-should-not-surprise-you/

One rumor that seems to have blown up this past week is about Apple ditching the headphone jack in the iPhone 7.  This seems this time to go back to Mac Otakara for the origins.  THIS TIME.  Because well this is not the first time for this rumor.  If you go back to Ep 311

    http://www.npr.org/2014/06/09/320368529/apple-

    jacks-the-headphone-port

From ep 311 around the 34 Minute 30 second mark.  You would hear the following:

Thanks to Dr. John for this next one - which definitely is still in the rumor section - and that is Per NPR that Apple is looking at dishing the standard 3.5 MM headphone connector - and instead have headphones plug directly into their lightening port.  So new iPhones at some point in the future - possibly even with the iPhone 6 - would just have the lightening port at the bottom - and no headphone port.  Which well none of the quote leaked unquote iPhone 6 photos indicate - they all show the headphone port right where you would expect it to be.

So all this talk about removing the headphone Jacks well that is kind of crazy speak - to do something like that Apple would need to have considerable cooperation from the largest manufacturer of headphones.  Oh Wait - Maybe Apple will go out and buy an headphone manufacturer.  No - that would be crazy speak.

Well that is one way to get people to invest in a new set of $300 headphones - change the connector and say there is some incredibly better acoustic response that only headphones that plug into the lightening connector can experience.  I mean after all if you are spending $300 on headphones - don't you really want the absolute best audio.

    UNQUOTE

Interesting from an article on MacRumors about this latest rumor quote Apple introduced new MFi Program specifications in June 2014 that allow third-party manufacturers to create headphones that connect to iOS devices via a Lightning cable, but the rollout has been slow. Philips has unveiled Lightning-equipped Fidelio M2L and Fidelio NC1L headphones over the past 14 months.  unquote

The rumors this time are also saying said iPhone that is sans a headphone jack - would have it where the lighting port supports digital to audio conversion.  So all you would need is a lightening to 3.5 MM adapter.

One of the reasons sited for the need for this change is so Apple can make the iphone thinner - going from 7.1 MM to 6.1 MM thick.  Except you know the iPod touch 6th gen is you know 6.1 mm thick and it has the 3.5 MM head phone jack.  And the argument that it NEEDS to be removed because of a thinner iPhone gets even shakier when you look at the iPod Nano - it has a 3.5 mm Headphone jack and it is 5.4 mm thick.

I am not saying Apple is not going to get rid of the headphone jack at some point - I am just saying one of the biggest reasons I have seen on why for the iPhone 7 - is that they NEED to because the iPhone 7 will be getting thinner and the jack will not fit - and well that argument just does not hold water.  As apple already has product much thinner than the current iPhone 6S that still have the headphone jack.

And add in the basic lack of interest in the industry to release headphone for lightening ports - even from Apples’s own Beats line - and this rumor looks to be just that a rumor - and not even an original one at that.

    29:24

At this point mom or dad if you are listening to the show please turn it off.  I am about to talk about a Christmas gift we purchased for you.  Folks If you are like me figuring out a Christmas gift for those in your life that buy everything they want makes getting a gift difficult to say the least.

I have talked about Boll and Branch before - and this year - they are my solution for getting my Parents a Christmas gift.  In the past we have struggled on what to get them.  There have been Old fashion Pop Corn Machines, A slot machine and Gift Cards to southwest. But this year we picked them out some really nice sheets which I then used the T i i promo code to save $50.

Boll and Branch make the perfect gift for someone very special in your life - it can even be for your wife or significant other.

    VOICEMAIL - Edgar_TX_AppleTV_Rant_in_app_purchases

Edgar - thanks for the voicemail and yes I agree that the remote app should have been updated prior to the release of the AppleTV.  That said you brought up the important point of making sure your password is not always available - especially if you have kids.

To check your settings folks - in the AppleTV 4th gen go to Settings - then Accounts - then iTunes and App Store - then Password Settings

I then recommend the following settings on that page.

For Purchases and In-App Purchases - set Require Password  go after 15 minutes

For Free Downloads - set it to No for require Password.

Then at least each time you go to download a free app you will not have to re-enter your password.

    Hey Rob

I've been on the fence about the iPad pro. I've finally come to a decision on getting one. I rarely use my MacBook pro 2015 and looking to replace it with the iPad pro. I have a question about the keyboard with messages. Is there a shortcut to send a message via messages? I would hate to have to keep reaching for the send button on screen in order to send. The last keyboard that I had for the air 2 didn't allow any shortcut. Love the show and everything that you do.

    Go J-E-T-S

    Regards,

    AJ

Hi AJ - All you have to do to send a message in the message app is hit the return key and it sends the message.

For emails you need to hit command shift D to send an email - that per the Apple Smart Keyboard.

    Hi Rob,

I am typing this on my Logitech case with my Ipad Pro. The keyboard case has beautiful backlit keys, and has the volume keys, and the screen keyboard is not present when it is connected and you are typing. It is a sturdy stand and I like the viewing angle better than the Apple keyboard case. What I do not like is that I have to pop out the Ipad Pro if I want to take a screen shot. The case is too thick for the volume and off switch to work through the case. The case is a bit heavier than I would like, but I like that the keyboard connects without needing to pair by bluetooth.

There really aren't a lot of options at this point.

Since I heard about the Ipad Pro, I was hoping that I wouldn't feel like I had to have one, they are pricey. I did just get a second part time job, that I took because my friend works there also. So on the 14th I popped in an Apple store thinking I would just play with them and hopefully not want one, but as fate would have it, there was one last one available in store, so of course here I am. Christmas came early for me.

I love the speakers, the size of the screen and I am waiting for my pencil to come. I did cover about 1/4 of the cost by selling my Ipad Air 1 on Ebay, so thanks to Apple that there is still a demand for older models.

Thanks for all your hard work - Regards,

    Karen

    Hi Rob,

I heard you mention on the latest show you were disappointed you couldn't control the volume on your new iPad, I have Clamcase on my iPad Air 2 & it allows you to control volume!  It is a great keyboard except for the charging port wouldn't accept on size cords?

    Roy

    Hello Rob,

I'm interested in working with you on a new story idea that I think you and your fans would love. Yk Smartphone Jeans have the perfect position for your phone so it is super practical and discreet. You will look great wearing the best quality jeans on the market. Most pants have the pocket opening on top and when you are sitting down it blocks the phone making it difficult to remove. Yk Smartphone Jeans allow you to enter your phone by the side of the pocket, this innovation completely changes the game and sets these incredible jeans far above the rest. You’ve invested a lot of money in your phone. Get the jeans that will keep it safe and handy.

    Regards,

    Jessica

This Project is called YK Smart Phone Jeans - and it has a goal of $45,000 and so far has raised $49 - as in $49 dollars - not 49,000.  So yes 1 dollar less than 50.

Essentially they look like jeans with a sorry to say this ugly extra pocket which has a zipper sown on.

I agree with them that it is difficult to get your phone out of your pocket when sitting - I just think there has a to be a prettier and better looking way of addressing this.

That said Beauty is in the eye of the beholder - and you have 45 days or so left to look this one over and decide if you want to fund it.  But really if a person launching it can’t even get friends or family to fund it - Yikes - those looking to launch a Kickstarter or indie gogo project can look at this one for examples of what not to do.

Search for YK smart Phone jeans at indiegogo.com or in the show notes for ep 374.

Thanks to Faisal K in the Google+ community for the heads up on this next one - which is the Kickstarter project called - Ulo - spelled U L O -  quote Ulo is a cute surveillance camera, a pet owl interacting with you through eye expressions. unquote.

This one you only have until Friday December 4th at 8:48 AM Central time to fund.  And it has blown away its funding goal of $223,000 - with over 1.3 Million already pledged.

Seems a lot of people want cute cuddly big brother surveillance in their house.  Pricing on this is $149 Euros or about $167 US dollars.   Estimated delivery - is November - as in November 2016.

If this sound like Furby meets big Brother - Bingo.

Just search for U L O - at kickstarter dot com or look for the link in the show notes for ep 374

For those with the Apple Watch looking for an App to monitor you while you sleep - there is an App called Sleep++  with both pluses being the symbol not the word.

The App is free - and it is recommended at night you place the apple watch into airplane mode to preserve battery life.

The Dev of the App also had a nice article where he recommends on how and when to charge your Apple Watch to allow you to use during the day but also at night when you sleep.  Essentially - charge it in the morning when you get up and are taking a shower and getting ready for the day.  Then again at night right before you go to sleep.  And once you are ready for sleep - place the watch in Airplane mode - and then tell it you are going to sleep - and in the morning - tell it when you woke up.  And it will tell you how much of the night was restless sleep.

I am going to start using this to see how I do - and how restless my sleep is.

    Rob,

I have a huge gripe about the new Apple TV. If you go to recent purchases and select a program that you have purchased multiple seasons of, you have to scroll to the right through ALL of the past episodes to get to the most recent show. You have to do this EVERY TIME. Why in the world wouldn't it show just the most recent season?  PLEASE Apple, finish the dang interface before shipping the device! This is currently a step back from the last generation. If anyone has any suggestion to work around this please let me know.

Also - Apple please flip the axis on scrolling so when I swipe right the items scroll to the right, not the cursor. This is opposite behavior of the Mac touchpad response and is not intuitive. It's down right frustrating.

    Loyal Apple fan (but annoyed)

    Hi Rob,

Thanks for putting my query about the Apple TV out for your listeners.

Also, like so many others I was contemplating the purchase of an iPad Pro. I decided against it for a few reasons and one of them is one I've not seen anyone else mention.  Apple does not sell a proper case for it. I know it sells  a keyboard case

but I do not want that. It also sells a cover but I do not want that either.

I want a case similar to the Smartcase Apple currently sells  for the Air2.

Surely this is not beyond the realm of possibility? I cannot be the only

person who wants a full case and doesn't want the keyboard with all of the  extra mass, and cost, that brings.

On an unrelated note; you mentioned a couple of episodes back about how difficult it is to keep your Apple TV remote properly oriented. Cmon Rob, surely your tactile sense isn't so bad that you cannot simply touch the remote and feel the difference between the two sides where the buttons are?  As a blind person I know I do this a lot more than you do but you are not without abilities. Don't even get me started on your complaint about the lack of a backlight. I mean, it has all of five buttons?

Not to pick on you too much but in my house the remotes are kept on a

table facing the TV etc and away from the couch. This way they are already properly oriented. Of course I don't have any small children who might be a bit less careful.

Thanks again for your help and for all of your hard work.

    Regards,

    Kevin Barry

    http://www.engadget.com/2015/09/16/att-

    unlimited-data-increase/

For those still with an AT&T unlimited data plan - They announced recently that they will not throttle your data speeds until you consume 22 GB of data in one billing cycle AND you also happen to be on a congested part of their network.

In the past it was they just throttled you when you hit 5GB - but then the government stepped in and said to AT&T - you know that word unlimited - I don’t think it means what you think it means.  And then threatened them with a big fine - so AT&T is making these changes not out of the goodness of their heart - but because the Government basically smacked them across the knuckles with a ruler.

FYI - If you reach 75% of the the 22GB in a billing period you will get a warning.

Again it is now a 22GB AND congested network criteria to be throttled.

    Hi Rob,

With the new Apple TV I'm wondering if you already own an app or game on iPhone do you need to purchase it again?

Name redacted - but really this same question came in from multiple people.

I know I mentioned this on the last episode - but I will repeat this again. Apple allows app developers the choice - they can make the app Universal - where users pay once and get it on all iOS devices and AppleTV without repaying for it. Or app devs can fork the app and make an Apple TV only version you need to pay for.   There are even some where you pay one price for the iPhone, another price for the iPad and another price for Apple TV.  But once again it is not up to Apple - it is up to the devs - and you just need to check out each app and see if they are universal or stand alone.

    Hey Rob,

great show lots of information, maybe you can spread the word on this or, let me know what this might have been. This maybe a similar version of the crypto locker. I was using my iPhone 6+ looking at a website using google Crome, only because I did not want to lose the page I had on safari, I don't remember exactly the website but, I was looking for some Christmas gifts, probably electronics, when all of a sudden I got this pop up that filled my whole screen, I'm not sure if it was a pop up, or I just got redirected to a different website, but it was a full-screen basically telling me I was doing some Thing illegal, and I needed to give them $350, via money pack, because all my data on my iPhone was already encrypted. At first I laughed, but pushing the home button, and the on off switch nothing would work, got a little concerned but not that much I have good faith in my good trusty iPhone. So I did a hard reboot, pressing the on off switch and home key simultaneously, after the reboot the phone was fine, and that was using Google Chrome as previously stated, I haven't use Google Chrome sense and never had this problem with Safari.

I listen to mostly all your shows, I DK if that has been brought up before in one of your shows, so maybe you can spread the word about that, because I know if it happens on a desktop or laptop and this you have a good back up, it's a very bad virus. So as far as the iPhone is concerned just a reboot is needed, also I'd like to know if anybody else has had this happen to them. Thanks again Rob

Great show, I get more out of your podcast then any other media I listen to.

    Regards

    Chris in Carson CA.

P.S. I would've done a screenshot, of the message I got but I wasn't able to use that function, I was only able to do the, hard reboot.

    Hi Rob,

I am hopping mad at Apple!! The Podcast app is being reported as using a whopping 5.3 Gb even though I deleted all podcasts, including yours. I quit all programs, then restarted my iPod touch 5, and checked the memory usage and it is still sucking up my memory. I can't delete it and reload it from the App Store as it is an Apple app. Do you see similar hogging in your devices?  This is more usage than I have between music and photos! I have been having problems updating apple numbers and pages and getting low memory warnings and slowness because of this amateur designed app! It is time to raise the roof at Apple over this garbage app!

Thanks for letting me vent here, if you have any solutions, or can plea to the listener base to bring this up with Apple, especially those who are in Warranty or have Apple Care and have the same problem, I would appreciate it!

    Thanks for your help!

    http://www.idownloadblog.com/2015/11/18/ios-9-2-beta-4/

iOS 9.2 beta 4 was released this week - just 8 days after beta 3.  Seems Apple has on this round stuck to the almost weekly release schedule - that will likely be the end of that with this beta release.

What is new - Well Arabic content via siri is new - You are able to talk to siri in Arabic. Search for local places and businesses and more.

Out side of that it seems it was as expected mostly about squashing bugs man.

Obviously we are getting closer to a full release of iOS 9.2

But not something that will happen until December - as next week is typically not the week your push out new software - being most of apple is on shut down for the Thanksgiving holiday.

I would not be surprised to see iOS 9.2 GM released around December 1st or 2nd.  Most reports on Beta 4 seem to be around it being stable Or relatively there of.

TV OS 9.1 Beta 3 was also released

    06:32

I received my iPad Pro last week and when I first opened it up my initial reaction was - WOW that is big.  I mean I knew it was going to be big - but I did not really understand how big until I opened that box and held it for the first time.

My boys both comments on how big it was.  My wife called it a lunch tray.

To put the size in perspective - the screen is larger than the screen on my Wifes 2015 MacBook - and just slightly smaller than the screen on my 2015 MacBook Pro.

It is too big to fit into any of the iPad pouches in my laptop bags.  So I have to put it in the main area meant for the laptops.

But you know what - Big is not a bad thing - depending on what you are going to do with it.  Editing a podcast - Bigger is better.  It is really easy to edit audio on the iPad Pro using twisted wave.  And the iPad Pro is also smoking fast.  Besides having 4GB of RAM - it is being clocked at 2.3 GHz.  This results in a very powerful mobile computing device.

One good test on pure computing power is the encoding of a recording in bossjock app to MP3 format.  If you take a 10 minute recording and encode to mp3 - 64 kbps - mono with the bossjock app - with the iPhone 4S - it will take you 369 seconds for that 600 second recording.  For the iPhone 6+ it takes just 93 seconds and with the iPad Pro it takes only 62 seconds.

When I started podcasting 10 years ago - to encode a 10 minute long audio podcast i.e. 600 seconds on my Titanium Powerbook took over 1,200 seconds.  Just to put the iPad Pro’s power into perspective.

Going multitask mode is where the iPad Pro is really nice - you can surf the web and have email open side by side and have plenty of room to be productive in both.  But here is the wannt wannnnt waaahh moment - you can’t go multitask mode with all apps - just those that support it.  So Sadly - Bossjock can not go side by side / multitask mode with other apps.   But luckily Safari and evernote do - so I can work on my show notes much easier on the iPad Pro.  I should point out that actually no audio recording apps I tested would allow multitask mode - so not just bossjock - but also garageband - Apples own recording app would not go multitask mode.

One place that big is also really nice is watching videos - I have been using it to watch Netflix - both when I work out and in bed at night.  With the four speakers - the audio quality is leaps and bounds better then other iOS devices.  But you do need to have something to rest it on.

Holding it for a couple of episodes of a TV show can get old quick.  luckily I have a rest made for the original iPad that works really well. I will mention something similar in the Kickstarter Campaign segment later in the show - it is called Meet Booy with boy spelled b o o y  of course.

Where big is never good is with big and naked - I am still having flashbacks to Kappa sorority and sophomore year UD.  Wooo Sorry - flashbacked again.   Anyway I was right I really do feel more angst carrying it around naked then if it had a case and I was naked.  Good news is the Smart Keyboard arrived Friday morning.

I should mention between episodes 372 and 373 in the Tii App only - is the unboxing videos for both the iPad Pro and the Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard - three different videos.  Those are up - so please check them out in the free Tii App

So obviously the Apple Pencil did get here earlier this week - kind of hard to do an unboxing video if you don’t have the box - My Oldest son had fun playing with the Apple Pencil and creating some pictures in the Notes app.

Pairing it is pretty easy - plug it in to the lightening port and turn on bluetooth and it asks to pair.  You have to plug it in any way to charge it.  And a quick tip - when charging it you have to take the cap off the lighting connector on the Apple pencil - just place the cap on one of the magnets on the front of the iPad Pro to keep the cap from rolling away.

In the package for the Apple pencil it comes with a replacement tip and also comes with a connector where you can plug in the Apple pencil on one side and your standard lightening cable to the other side to charge it as well.  So that was a nice surprise to get that and the replacement tip.

I did try to see if I could get it to work with any older iOS devices - nope - could not - not that thought it would but hey needed to try.

Per the use of it - I have used many styluses over the years - people still send them to me unsolicited.  Not surprisingly none of them compare neither in terms of accuracy or latency - because the Apple pencil is dead on accurate and there is no latency or virtually no latency - there were a couple of times I was writing so fast it was just ever so slightly behind - but only a couple of times.  One thing it showed me is that wow my handwriting is really really bad and I desperately need the smart keyboard cover.  Good thing I got the apple pencil for everything other than taking notes.  The Apple pencil does detect tilt - so if you select the magic marker option and depending on the tilt will depend on the thickness of the line - it works really well. So far so good with the Apple pencil - More on it on future episodes - as I have not tested any 3rd party apps yet.

As I mentioned the Smart Keyboard did arrive.  I just received it this morning and here are my initial thoughts on this.

The keyboard is a good size it is actually the same size keyboard as is on my macbook pro.  It takes a few tries to get used to how it is supposed to be folded  but once you get it right it snaps in place with some pretty strong magnets

It does not appear that you can hide the onscren keyboard and keep typing which is annoying.  but luckily there is still plenty of real estate above the on screen keyboard  to easily see what you are doing.  Some bluetooth keyboards the on screen keyboard would go away on my other iPads.  Not sure if this is a bug or a feature.  Hopefully it is a short term bug.

one of the features that I like is that command A selects ALL - command C copies and command V pastes just as you would want them to.

One thing I have not found is a way to adjust the volume of the iPad pro from the keyboard to which I say - REALLY APPLE REALLY?

How could they not have controls for volume.  Maybe I am missing it - I really hope I am missing it - note I only received the keyboard earlier today - so this is not a full review.  I like that you don’t have to charge the keyboard and it is light and thin - but typing on it was awkward and the way I hold my hands I kept touching the touch screen closing the keyboard.  At this point I can’t say it was money well spent - again that is just per the smart keyboard and I have not really used it enough to get used to it - yet.

So my initial summarized review of the iPad Pro - it is big - in a good way.  It is fast in a great way.  For me as a podcaster - I think it is a great device for creating content - and I plan for it to be my main production machine for my KC Startup 411 Podcast.  But not for today in iOS.  But I will be using it to work on show notes more often via evernote - so it will contribute hopefully to a better work flow in the pre-production phase.  The iPad Pro is I think is best described as an el camino - part car - part truck.  Not really either - but in some ways better then both and in other ways not.  It is not as powerful as my Mac Book Pro - and it is not as portable as my iPhone 6+.  But make no mistake the iPad Pro combined with the Apple Pencil is a creation device first and a consumption device second.  Which is opposite of the iPad Mini and the iPad Air.  I have only just scratched the surface with it - no pun intended - but I am very much loving what I have been able to do with it - with one down side - going back to the iPhone 6+ now sometimes feels smallish.

So iPad Pro - Get it.

    Apple Pencil - Get it.

Apple Smart Keyboard - jury is still out on this and still surprised by the lack of some features - given the price.  Hopefully I am missing something obvious  - more on this in future episodes.

    Hi Rob.

This is James from NJ. It sounds like you didn't take your own advice and use the Apple Store app to order your iPad Pro. I found out about in store pickup at the top right of the product order page along with the expected delivery date so I knew about it before it was in my cart. Just some advice for next time.

Loving it. Until I get the pencil and can use it for art, it's great as a reader for magazines and books. It might be as heavy as the first iPad but its thinness makes that unnoticeable when carrying it around. Not for laying in bed, obviously, but a pleasure in my lap. I plan on keeping my iPad Air; this is something else.

(Spelling check knows to capitalize air but not pro)

    Hi Rob –

I've been looking forward to Apple making the iPad Pro since the iPad came out – I'm a professional musician, and I use my iPad every day, whether I'm teaching and performing.  When teaching, I have Étude books, exercises, and other pieces of music scanned into the iPad, so I don't have to lug a lot of books around. I can easily email exercises to students, or download audition music for music festivals, or what have you. When performing music, whether I'm on stage, or in the pit for a musical, I can easily have all of the music there with me, I don't have to worry about plugging in a stand light so I can read the music, or other issues like that.

I also use the iPad to record things – multitrack recording apps, GarageBand, these are all fantastic on the regular iPad, even better on the iPad Pro because of its size and speed.

There are a lot of apps, like smart music, for example, that make life much easier for musicians. I don't hear anyone in the tech press talking about the advantages the iPad brings to the table for musicians. The iPad was already good for all of these tasks – the iPad Pro, is even better.

    -Billy Bargetzi

    Hey Rob

I really want to get my hands on the iPad Pro

I am a voice over user and have a 6s plus and an i-Pad air II.

The big i-Pad pro is big enough to actually put my fingers on the home row in portrait mode so I could type directly from the screen just like I am brailling on the phone at the moment.

The smart keyboard case also sounds intriguing because there is no pairing which may mean the keyboard won't stop working with voice over when the operating system updates which is what happens now.

Then, the power and the four speakers.

This is the first audio improvement in a long long time and I'm excited.

The review I mentioned stated that he could play music on the pro using on-board speakers as dinner music in another room.

He did not need to use his sound link speaker.

I will not buy before I get my hands on it.

I rarely use my windows 7 box any more because all I do I do with IOS.

    That is my two cents.

Do you know anybody who wants to buy an Air II?

    Thanks,

    Jan Brown

    Hi Rob

After listening to your last podcast, took the plunge and went out and purchased a iPad pro 128gb space grey.

After spending so much cash never had the funds to fully protect my new purchase.

While awaiting my £8 Amazon fake leather flip case I went to bed all excited after  spending my first evening enjoying my amazing purchase (the iPad pro, not the £8 Amazon case).

Maybe it was something you said in your recent podcast or maybe it's just my love of my new device but that night I could not stop dreaming of me walking down my local town centre stark naked, with a smile on my face knowing my iPad pro was, and still is at home wrapped in my daughters fleece bedding.

Strange story but sure you can relate, I am still awaiting my case and screen protector and I am typing this message on my pro wearing rubber gloves whilst sitting in my padded room ☺️☺️

What protection are you currently using whilst awaiting the iPad case?

    Keep up the good work

I talked earlier about the new iPad Pro - and one place I like using it - is in bed.  Matter of fact in bed is the only place I let my boys use it. it is a great device to get some work done in bed or better yet watch Netflix.

And if you are going to be spending more time in bed would it not make sense to get the best bed possible?  And that is what today’s sponsor Casper offers up.  The best bed at a great price.

Or as they say an obsessively engineered mattress at a shockingly fair price.

With Casper you get a 100 day risk free trial period.  You don't like it you get your money back and they come and pick it back up and donate it to a charity.  That said - the mattress they sent was great and was definitely not going back.

Casper Mattresses are a mix of Latex foam and Memory foam. No noisy springs to wake up your kid or significant other when you get up to sneak some of the kids halloween candy from the bowl in the kitchen in the middle of the night.   Shhh don’t tell the kids

But just as important as quality is Pricing and the pricing is really great.   Twin Mattresses are just $500, they also have Twin XL for $600, Full for $750, Queen for $850 and then King and Cal King - for  $950.  That is less much much less than my iPad Pro setup.  And as I said you have 100 days to return it risk free. And if you go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code tii - you will save $50 off those prices -   Terms and Conditions Apply.

This is an american made mattress with delivery right now for the US and Canada only and it is free delivery. And When said mattress is delivered - it is from UPS - in a squarish box that you think no way is there a mattress in there - But you get a cool little tool to cut open the package and the mattress opens up and expands to form.  It is really cool Just google Casper Mattress unboxing.

With all the apple devices working so well in bed - you know you are going to spend more than a 1/3 rd of your life in bed is it not worth getting the best nights sleep possible - and that is what you will get with Casper or what your kids will get.  Again to Save $50 off of the prices I mentioned go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code t i i - all lower case on the promo code.  again casper dot com / tii - promo code tii to save $50 - thanks Casper for the great mattress for my son and for sponsoring this show.

    Hi Rob,

A caller was requesting a suggestion to easily carry his phone.

I suggest www.ripoffs.com  Made in the USA - by Veterans.

They are a division of U.S.Armor - the developer of body armor for the military and law enforcement. (Humans & K-9's)

They provide several models depending if you keep your phone naked to using an Otter Box.

I've used their products for over a decade, all models have the choice of a clip or belt loop. The clips stay on and do not jab you in the side. I carry 2 phones for work.

They run about $20, the design is simple, has a protective Velcro covering, protecting it from rain or dirt, and last for years.

Functional for both tactical missions to the occasional suit and tie deployment.

Rob your work is valued and appreciated ~ thank you for your work.

    Kind regards

    Rob hi,

Just listened to your last episode.  Someone was asking how to create a US iTunes account from abroad.  Since I live in Israel and wanted a US account I started years ago like you suggested with a gift card however there is a more convenient way - all you need is an American Express card issued wherever you live.  After obtaining the card you call American Express customer service and add a secondary address to your account using any US address (no mail is sent there.  It's only for billing purposes).  Then you use that card for creating a US iTunes account.

    It's that simple.

    Thanks for your great show.

    Eran.

    Hi Rob,

I noticed in the last episode (371) you talked about how you dialed the free conference call number and how you had to make the code part of the name so it was saved, there is an easier way to do this.

    First enter the number:

    1-206-666-6364

To add a pin or some other access number add a coma then the number.

    Example:

    1-206-666-6364, 12345#

You can do this multiple times if there are layers to the menu. Also the more comas you add the longer the pause.

    You can also have a delayed entry by using a ;

    Example:

    1-206-666-6364; 12345#

This will give you a button on the lower left of the keypad that you can enter when you're ready.

Hopefully this helps you and the other listeners.  I use this daily for conference calls at work.

As always, thanks for the hard work.

    Regards,

    Peter in Austin

I mean sure I guess you could do it that way if you know you want to do it where it makes sense and you just tap for the code.  Peter - seriously - thanks for the email and the great tip.

    Hi Rob,

A listener was asking about ad blocking for the iPhone 5.

You found the Safari content blockers, which require at least the iPhone 5S

There are ad blockers that use VPN instead of Safari content blocking, and they will work on the iPhone 5.  Ad requests are sent to the VPN address and no ads are returned, all other data is sent normally.  Unlike Safari content blockers, they will also block ads in many apps, not just Safari.

I have found two, and they both worked on my iPhone 5.

    Adblock Mobile

    https://itunes.apple.com/app/adblock-mobile-protect-your/

    id919790902

    http://adbl0ck.com

    Pro:

         Free.

Shows how much ad data saved over last few days.

    Cons:

Sends ad requests to their VPN server, which can use some data (though much less than the actual ads).

More complicated installation.  Installs Root Profile, and if you make a mistake in the undocumented installation (such as “Cancel” instead of “Open in Adblock”), data won’t work.

Disabling and enabling involve removing and installing Profiles.

Always displaying VPN in status bar.  Sometimes this covers other items in the status bar, such as battery percentage.

         No customization of ad domains.

    AdBlock for iOS

    https://itunes.apple.com/app/adblock/id691121579

    https://www.adblockios.com

    Pro:

Dummy VPN server address.  No data actually sent to any VPN server.

Simple enable and disable from app.  No profiles.

Easy control of ad domains, and adding new ones.

    Cons:      $1.99

Apple TV Remote Loop (wrist strap) has precision construction

I just bought the wrist strap for the Apple TV 4th gen.  Yes, it does cost $12.99, but I wanted it to avoid throwing the remote at my tv by mistake causing much greater damage.

To my surprise, I found that the remote has a precision mechanical connector mechanism where it attaches to the lightning port.  It has tiny latches and the lightning cable itself has push button releases on both sides of the cable stub/end.

P.S.  The remote loop solves the problem of the new remote being symmetrical and makes it easier to grab it in the dark without pressing on the touch panel accidentally.

Daniel from Wisbench commented via the latest podcast about Alto's adventure and had about having to pay $2.99 again for the tvOS version..

Rob thanks for speaking up on behalf of the developers, it's crazy to think that a developer shouldn't have to get paid for their work, a universal App takes work, especially if you want your app to work easily on iPad, iPhone (4S, 5, 6 and Plus) sizes.  Note, Auto Layout is not as easy as the apple keynote makes it out to be (it's not the end of the world, but moving an object can result in rebuilding constraints.

lastly, Alto's adventure DOES support iCloud syncing with the tvOS version of the app.  so the only difference is that you need to buy it again.

    From Myron Uecker

Listening to Rob mention he paid about $1500 total

for his iPad Pro, keyboard and Apple Pencil really had me thinking.

Yesterday I stopped by the local Apple Store and saw the iPad Pro.

I also looked at MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. For just

a little more than that $1500, you could buy the mid or even

high-end models of any device in the MacBook line and

     get a similar-sized retina screen.

I know it really depends on what you plan to use it for, but personally, if it was my money, I would rather spend it on a 13 inch MacBook Pro and carry an iPad Air when I need something portable. Then again, I don't use mine for notes, drawing, etc. so Apple Pencil isn't something I need. I really like the size of my iPad Air 2 and don't think I would want the larger size even if price wasn't an issue.

    From Mark Page

Rob I was expecting someone to reply to the guy who said in the previous podcast 371 that he had scratched his watch face and thought that it should be made with Sapphire glass. I'm assuming he has the sports watch which unlike the other versions does not have the Sapphire glass. I chose the stainless steel watch with Sapphire glass specifically to avoid scratches.  Despite my clumsy knocks, the watch remains scratch free.

    https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPad+Pro+Teardown/52599

iFix it got their hands on an iPad Pro and what we learned from their tear down is the following.

as mentioned - it has 4GB of ram vs 2GB in the iPad Air 2

Also there is a lot of space internally dedicated to the 4 speaker enclosures.  The speaker enclosures combined occupy about 50% of the space occupied by the batteries.  The sound quality on the iPad Pro is really impressive or over due depending on your perspective.

Per the cameras on the iPad Pro - they are essentially the same as on the iPad Air 2 - so nothing new there - but then if you felt like a dork taking a picture with a 9.7 inch iPad - you will feel like a much bigger dork taking pictures with the 12.9 inch iPad Pro.  I know I did. So honestly - Better Cameras are pretty low on my list of spec wants for the iPad Pro.

iFixit - talks about the self balancing speakers - what that means is one depending on the orientation - will depend on what is left and what is right.  Additionally the top speakers will get higher frequency sounds to produce a more balanced sound.

Per the batteries there is 10,307 MAh’s worth of battery storage.  vs 7,340 mAh’s for the iPad Air 2.

Per the A9X processor it is clocked at 2.26 GHz vs 1.85 GHz for the A9 in the 6S and 6S+ and 1.5 GHz for the A8X in the iPad Air 2

Overall the iPad Pro is a beast spec wise - and that shows in the use of the device.

    pro-is-faster-more-affordable-than-microsofts-surface-pro-4

There is a good article from Daniel Eran Dilger I link to in the show notes titled - Apple’s new iPad Pro is faster, more affordable than Microsoft’s surface Pro 4.

So if you were someone looking at the surface pro 4 as a potential device - besides this likely not being the show you are looking for - this article is a really important read for you - if you know - you care about specs and price.

One quote I like from the article - quote when apple first unveiled the iPad Pro it noted that its custom designed A9X chip would be faster than 80% of the PC’s that shipped this year.  Benchmarks indicate that its not just faster then low end generic PC’s but also faster and less expensive than microsoft’s surface pro 4 unquote.

Again look for that link in the show notes if you want a really in depth comparison.  Good read as always from Daniel.

    mini-4-faster-a8-2gb-ram/

One thing I don’t believe I talked about in the past was the updated specs for the iPad Mini 4 - or at least I don’t remember talking about them - and I had someone ask - so here is a quick update on the updated specs.

The mini 4 has the A8 chip running at 1.5 GHz - that is a dual core chip vs the iPad Air 2 which has the tri core A8X chip also running at 1.5 GHz.  FYI - the iPad Pro - A9X processor is a dual core chip - but still a lot faster than the A8X tri-core chip.

The Mini 4 also has 2 GB or Ram - matching that of the iPad Air 2.

Overall the mini 4 is slightly slower than the Air 2 in real world testing and bench mark testing as well.  But not a lot slower - just slightly slower.

But then again if speed and performance are your thing - then the iPad Pro is for you anyway.

Apple has a new and well over due accessory for the Apple watch - and that is the Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Dock White it costs $79 of course.  And since they have “white” in the name - it kind of leads one to believe they will be having others colors in the near future.

This will be available for pickup at an Apple store today the 20th or Now.  Delivery’s start next week.

It works for both the 38 and 42 mm versions - and the charging disk either lays flat in the dock or pops up 90 degrees - allowing you to put your Apple watch into night stand mode.

In the box you get the Charging dock and a lightning to USB cable.

    apples-ios-just-became-a-secure-sharepoint-client-

    for-enterprise-it.html

Interesting article in Computer world titled - Apple iOS just became a secure sharepoint client for enterprise IT

This is about the new Colligo email manager for iOS app - currently in beta.  This enables enterprise class email and document sharing for iOS

Quote the app supports the creation, classification and storage of emails, attachments and documents as records in sharepoint unquote - that obviously is important for corporate users that are under regulatory requirements to secure their info and make sure it is protected.  IE Data Compliance

Colligo is now joining Cisco, IBM, telogis and others who are releasing products to support enterprise needs on iOS devices.

This means each day Apple and its enterprise level partners are chipping away at IT’s list of reasons not to use iOS - and adding to the list of reasons on why TO use iOS

We have come a long way in the past 8 years.

    http://www.redmondpie.com/apple-watch-2-development-

    begins-release-date-set-for-q3-2016-rumor/

Rumors swirling around this past week from multiple sources and with different specifics about the next gen Apple Watch.

One title was Apple Watch 2 development begins, release date set for Q3 2016.   First let me say this - Apple Watch 2 development began well before the first Apple watch shipped.  That is how Apple rolls - at least according to them in any interview they have ever given where they talked about their design process. So NO Apple Watch 2 development did not begin.

Now it is likely the Apple Watch 2 initial prototype builds have begun - and that is what is meant by the reports coming out of china.  Where those sources are saying a Q3 release date for the Apple Watch 2.

At the same time another set of rumors this time from often or alway wrong Digitimes says the next Apple watch will launch in the 2nd quarter of 2016.  Which is good to know - because now we know 100% - that the Apple Watch 2 - WILL NOT launch until at least Q3 2016.

I am not going to get into speculating about specs - other than to say the BIGGEST difference between the current Apple Watch and the next gen will most likely be Battery Life.  Don’t expect Pebble watch life spans on a charge - but do expect triple the current battery life.

Why Triple - I think that is the threshold where a good amount of current Apple Watch owners would say - hmmm - time to pass this on to the kids / significant other / neighbor / guy on craigslist and for me to upgrade.

Less than triple battery life - I just don’t think moves the needle on upgrades.  We can come back to this segment and see if I get into the who wrong were they segment or not come Q3 or later - as again based on Digitimes being wrong we know Q2 is not a chance for the release time frame.

    Rob:

I have an Apple TV question that I've not seen addressed anywhere yet. I have purchased iTunes content constituting movies and some TV series.

What I'd like to know if it is possible from the TV to browse the list of

purchased movies etc and tell the TV to download what you want? This is how

you can do it on an iPad or iPhone now. I figure that way I can have media

waiting for me later instead of trying to stream it.

I am an American living in the Philippines and my bandwidth isn't what it

used to be. If you can  answer this question this will help me decide

between the 32 or 64GB models. I'll have a visiting friend bring me mine in

January. Although the TV will be sold here later it won't have the Siri

interface. Plus, it's cheaper to buy in the U.S.

    Regards

    Kevin

    Hi Rob,

Long time iPhone user, short time listener. Love the show. I'm back to iPhone after a brief stint with an android phone the past two years (bad experience). I missed the 5, 5S and 6 phones, but have had all the others including the original.

So, I have the 6S and obviously ios9. I have been successful with OpenVPN and connecting to my home server. It is stable and works from wifi and cellular. I didn't even realize there were issues until I listened to your most recent episode. So whatever issues there were they appear to have been fixed, at least with the official OpenVPN app.

    Keep up the great work.

    Regards,

    Tom

    Hi Rob,

For folks who don't have iOS 9 can extract and save voice-mail messages with the use of iExplorer.  There's a free trial version that doesn't expire:

    http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/

With a phone plugged into a computer and the device selected in iExplorer, Voicemail is found in the Backups section.

Or, to extract Voicemail from a backup: select one of the available backups (phone doesn't need to be plugged in). Voicemail is a top-level menu item.

    Regards,

    Shelley

New Kickstarter project and as mentioned earlier this one is called Meet Booy - two words with booy spelled B O O Y.

This one has a goal of $45,000 and they are at a little over $44,000 with Dec 5th being their deadline - so they are going to be funded - most likely are by the time you hear this.

What is said device - well also as mention before it is essentially a bean bag chair for your iPad - allowing you to put it different places and have really good stability with it.

Pricing on this is on the high side - $80

essentially there is a metal plat that is placed on the back of your iPad via reusable adhesive that quote leaves no residue unquote - yeah if I had a nickel everytime some said that to me.    And then the leather bean bag attaches magnetically.

It is nice looking but $80 hmmm.

luckily I already have something similar.

If this is something you are interested in - search for Meet booy - two words m e e t   b o o y at kickstarter dot com or in the show notes for ep 373

You know that game - dead or alive - you have to say if some long forgotten celebrity is still alive or if they have died - and often times you get it wrong and you are surprised to find out someone is actually still alive. Ok - this next one is like that kinda - iOS App or not. In other words is this next App available as an iOS App or not. And if asked a few weeks ago I would have said yes its an app - but back then I would have been wrong - because when I saw last week that it just launched as an iOS app I was like really wow - thought you were already an iOS App - and this app I am taking so long to get to - is FireFox. Yup - it is now finally an iOS App - which again app or not app - I would have guessed App previously. Really Firefox - you needed over 1.5 Million other apps to come first before you said - yeah - ok - I think that platform is on to something? Hmmmm

    http://www.theverge.com/2015/6/4/8724949/best-podcast-

    app-iphone-outcast-pocket-casts-castro

I ran the libsyn numbers for downloads for October and as I thought would be the case the downloads to aggregator apps other than the podcasts app went up in October - this due to issues with the podcasts app - and well changes that make it awkward to start an episode and play bar so skinny you need the apple pencil to hit it.

The big winner in our stats was Overcast - not shocking.

The Verge had an article back in June ranking the different Podcast apps at that time - and then their winner was also Overcast.

Next up was Shifty Jelly Pocket Casts - and yup that was right behind Overcast in our downloads.  next was Castro.  Which I should say Elsie my co-host on the feed - loves that app.

Then downcast, then in their rankings were Apples Podcasts App and Stitcher and TuneIn - all tied followed

If you listened to this show for a while - hearing Overcast number 1 is not a shock - same with Downcast being ahead of the Podcasts App.

And if you are looking for another solution then Pocketcasts and Castro are two other good alternatives to listening to podcasts.

But always the best solution is a dedicated app in my opinion - that is what I like for the shows I listen to.  It does make it easier when you only have one show per app.   But for all those shows not considerate enough to supply you the listener with the best option - the next best option could be Overcast or Shifty Jelly’s pocket cast or castro or Downcast.  If again the podcasts app is not your cup of tea.

By the way in rankings - it does go Podcasts App over 50% of all  downloads,  Then Stitcher almost 3% then overcast, then Pocketcasts.

    Hi Rob,

Quick question for your listeners who use Voice over on a apple Watch. My question is, is it really useful to them or is it just a novelty item? More importantly would they recommend buying one? The reason I ask is because in Ireland we have no Apple stores so I could try one out, and 2 the price. The base model Apple watch sport is 480Euro!!! Ya, a little steep i think so I'd really like to hear  some peoples experiences with it,

    Hi Rob

I am seeing what appears to be a bug in the mail app. My exchange account says it has 3 new emails, but I go into the inbox and there are no new emails or unread ones. Any suggestions on how to fix this so my inbox doesn't show new emails when there aren't any?

Hi Rob, Does anybody know of a app or a jail break tweak that will let me have "do not disturb" on everything else except for a certain app,  I have cameras throughout the house and would love for that certain app to come through in the middle of the night and block all others. If any of your listeners know of a way to do this that would be great!!! thanks Rob

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote The following are three reasons the new iPad 3rd Generation will be dead on arrival (DOA):

    1) New iPad Cannot Compete with Kindle Fire and BlackBerry PlayBook

    2) New iPad is Thicker and Heavier

    3) New iPad Nearly Identical to the iPad2

    ios-9-2-beta-3/

Apple is making it really easy for me to pick titles for the episodes.  As they are turning out a new version of the iOS 9.2 beta each week.  This week it was iOS 9.2 beta 3.

Initial reports on the beta 3 are it squashes the bugs man.  One of which was with the App Switcher.

This one is available to both devs and public beta testers.

If this beta sounds pretty light on new features that is not surprising - it is usually in the 1st and 2nd betas we see any new features added or removed.  Sometimes added for beta 1 and removed for beta 2.

In the first two betas for 9.2 we saw AT&T’s new NumberSync feature added and changes to embedded Safari Browsers with allow them to load extensions.  Plus there was also Arabic Language Support added to Siri.

    9/9697374/apple-tv-update-tvos-9

The first update is already out for Apple TV - with tvOS 9.0.1 being made available.

If you have automatic updates turned on - it will download automatically.  Most Apple TV users will have automatic updates enabled.

If you don’t have it enabled to manually get the new update on your Apple TV go to Settings —> System —> Software Updates.

Support for Bluetooth Keyboards and Apple’s Remote App is still not available.

If you are a dev - tvOS 9.1 beta 2 is also now available.

You will need to USB to USB Type C cable and will need to connect the Apple TV to your computer to install the Beta update.

Previous notes on the tvOS 9.1 beta indicate improvements in WiFi compatibility, in-app-purchase for App Store Apps, improved scrolling and Siri is enabled to work with Apple Music.  Again no indication of support for the Remote App.

Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Berzerkistan, Canada, Cayman Islands, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Elbonia, El Salvador, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greenland, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Lower Slobbovia, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Russia, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, UAE, US, UK, Uruguay and US Virgin Islands.

It will be available in Apple Stores on Friday the 13th as well as at select Carriers and Apple Authorized Resellers.

The Apple Pencil and Apple Smart Keyboard will also be available at the same time.

The iPad Pro was available to order starting around X AM on the 11th.

I was hoping for it to be available at 12:01 AM PT / 2:01 AM CT - but that was not the case.  It was actually around 2:15 AM CT.  And I happened to guess right on the URL where it would be.

     http://www.apple.com/shop/buy-

    ipad/ipad-pro

I actually had my order done online prior to it being available in the Apple Store App or being linkable on line. Hah.

I did order my iPad Pro 128 GB version wifi + cellular Gold version along with the Apple Pencil and the Apple Smart Keyboard.  Delivery is supposed to be on 13th before noon - for the iPad Pro.  HOWEVER the Apple Pencil and the Apple Smart Keyboard - yeah we will not see those until the 19th.  I did pay the Extra $20 for expedited shipping and here is a little tip - if you pick expedited shipping for the iPad - select it for the Apple Pencil and the smart keyboard as well - as it does not raise the $20 added charge.  Total cost for all this was a tad under $1,500 - at $1,493.10 - that is with the tax and shipping.

I will put up an unboxing video for the iPad Pro before the next episode - keep checking the Tii App for that.

I also sent out a push notification as soon as it was available and I posted in the Tii Google+ community.  So hopefully you saw those and were able to get your order in.

FYI - correction on the last episode I said the smart keyboard was $129 - we should be so lucky - it is actually $169.  Apple Pencil is $99.  And the iPad Pro is either $799 for the 32 GB wifi only version - avoid.  or $949 for the 128 GB wifi only version or $1079 for the 128 GB Wifi and Cellular version.  Which is the one I went with.

I look forward to talking about it more on the next episode.  In the mean time if you did order one as well - please call in with your reviews - 206-666-6364 - that is 206 moon dog or record those reviews and email them to today in iOS at gmail dot com.

    VOICEMAIL - James_NJ_iPad_Pro_buying_experience

Thanks James - I did not even think of checking the pick up option - doohhh.  Hopefully they ship sooner for me - but I some how doubt it.  I will likely have at least 6 long days with a naked iPad Pro.  I just relooked at my order and it says the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard deliver between the 19th and the 23rd.  So I could be Naked for 10 days or well my iPad Pro could be naked for 10 days that is.  Which made me think would I feel more comfortable walking down the street holding my new iPad Pro with a case on it while I am naked or the other way.  And honestly the thought of walking with the iPad Pro Naked gives me more anxiety.  But then I played Rugby - still have some of that Zulu Warrior left in me.

    Into the email bag.

    Hi Rob,

I'm lucky enough that I'm pretty sure my employer will buy me an iPad Pro. I'm the Paralympic archery coach for Great Britain and the iPad is perfect for my needs.

Other people in my department have just been kitted out with new Dell laptops and I politely said "thanks but no thanks", knowing the iPad Pro was soon to be released.

Not only is the iPad totally suited to coaching life outside in the field, videoing and analysing but also the Pro will cost substantially less than the Dell. Even with the addition of the keyboard case and pencil.

I truly have been "post PC" for 3 years now and the introduction of the iPad Pro only makes it more likely I will never go back.

How many other listeners are totally "post pc"?

    Love the show,

    Regards,

    Mike from Telford in England

    Archery GB Paralympic Coach

Ok - I could not leave that email there so I asked Mike what are some of the features he is looking forward to.

    Here was his response

    Rob,

I guess the feature I'm most looking forward to is simply more screen spaces, especially for the side-by-side video and photo analysis, for example when we are looking a "before & after" photos of an athletes technique change. Currently for this I would often use the Apple TV to get the images onto a biggest screen, now I think more often than not I'll be able to do the work on the iPad Pro out in the field, in the training session and not have to wait until after.

Also every couple of weeks I'll have a full day at my desk answering emails and writing reports for 9 hours. Even though I love my touch screen keyboard I have a sneaking suspicion that I may well be faster on the physical keyboard case. Time will tell.

Along with the Apple Watch I think the iPad Pro will be a common sight at international archery events this summer leading into the Rio games.

    Regards,

    Mike

    Thanks Mike.

Some other feedback with regards to the iPad Pro

Stephen Williams said quote So if I want an iPad pro, it's going to cost me almost as much as a MacBook Air. Think I'm going to wait for the next gen. iPad Air as the pro's price is simply too high for me. unquote

Faisal Keylani said quote I have mixed feeling towards iPad pro. I kinda like the bigger screen but I believe it's big to carry! Plus the price tag !! And it's OS is not Mac OS , it's IOS! unquote

And Michael Polinske said quote When I heard the iPad Pro was as heavy as original iPad that turned me off right away. uquote.

So too big - too heavy - too expensive is the common refrain from Con side.  And a legit refrain for most.

Again call in or email in your thoughts - especially if you purchased one.  I will say this - with out a doubt this is the most expensive iOS device ever.  Much more - over 50% more then the previous most expensive iOS device - when you include the Pencil and keyboard.  So it is going to be for a smaller segment of the audience - that said - so far I have been very very surprised by the low number of replies from people saying they purchased one.  Maybe that will change - but if these first 10 hours of availability are any indication compared to past launches - shortages are not something you will need to worry about. That is all un-scientific - and just based on how it feels this time vs past launches.

Today’s sponsor is the official Partner for the Movember Foundation - Yup - of course that is harrys.  Harry’s will be donating money to and helping raise awareness for Men’s health.  If you are not Familiar with Movember - it is where you grow or shave down to a Mustache.  Harrys has always been a company with a social mission - a company you could always feel good about and in Movember - that really is a month in which that mission to care and help comes forward.

But you know what? good intentions also require a good product to make it all work - and Harry’ goes above and beyond there - with a great product - the best razor I have ever used - PERIOD.  The Best Shave gel and the best aftershave lotion.  I love me my Harry’s products.  That is not in the talking points - that is from my heart. I recommend Harry’s all the time - being how I shave my head bald - people ask now all the time how I shave my head - Harrys - h a r r y s dot com - promo code tii.  That is my response.

I was at Walgreens yesterday trying to find a shower gel made from the same great ingredients as my Harry’s shave gel or at least similar ingredients. I mean if I am going to care enough not to put chemicals on my face I thought some other parts of me deserved the same consideration.  I spent well over 15 minutes reading ingredients - it was really depressing. Nothing and I mean Nothing matched the natural ingredients you find with Harry’s products.  Hey Harry’s I want a shower gel from you something for the neck on down.

One of the reasons I am so loyal a harrys customer is because I know Harry’s cares about what they provide to you - they care so much they even purchased the blade factory for their razors - the blades are kinda important.  This is a German blade factory that was started almost 100 years ago.  So they know a thing or two about making blades.

This is why you can get the best shave at the best price - they are vertically integrated.

And the best part of all this Harry’s makes it sooo easy to get started for just $15 you get their starter kit - that includes the nice sturdy razor handle, 3 blades and your choice of the shaving cream or the foaming shave gel - I recommend the shave gel.   And if you use the promo code - tii - you get $5 off.  That is right for $10 you get all that and you get it delivered to your door.  Shipping is free.

Again go to H A R R Y S dot com and use coupon code tii to save $5 off your first purchase.

    Hi Rob,

In regards to the listener wanting to save his moms voicemail to he's computer. I use iMazing by DigitDNA. It used to be called diskaide and it does a boat load of other features.

    Richard

    Atlanta

    Hello Rob,

my condolences to Richard B. for the loss of his mother. He asked for a way to store voice mails in iOS.

When you open voicemails and select one, a share button is displayed.

Among others you are offered to share via email or to store as a voice recording (which can then be synced to iTunes).

    I hope, this helps.

    Kind regards from Berlin, Germany

    Boris

Hey Rob, you had a listener in item 371 who wrote in asking how he could transfer his voicemails to his computer. I just noticed in iOS 9 and later there's (finally) an option inside each voicemail on the top right  to send the voicemail via text message, email and other options including save to dropbox. So he could go through the voicemails and send the ones he wants to keep to himself via email, and detach them to his computer, or just save them right to dropbox. Hope that helps.

    Regards,

    Aric B

    Hello Rob,

I was listening to your latest episode and you had a listener ask about saving voicemails from his late mother. One great Easter egg with iOS 9 is that: if you are in the voicemail, and have the message selected, you will see the share button. You can press that and one of the options is voice memos. Once you share it with voice memos you can sync the recordings with iTunes. I have done this with messages I have saved from when my children were smaller and would leave me cute messages while away for work. Hope this helps, very sorry for the listeners loss.

    Hi Rob,

After I listened to episode 371, I downloaded the AppleWatch app, Wristructions after I heard the dev was giving it away FREE for a limited time. Let me tell you, it ROCKS!

I used it to save the instructions you gave at the end of the episode on how to record calls from my iPhone using FreeConferenceCalling.com. Now, I have the instructions at hand, or rather, at wrist when I need to remember how to use them.

Thanks to both you and the Wristructions dev. I strongly urge the Tii listeners to grab this app for free IMMEDIATELY! Thanks for all the ways you teach us how make our iOS devices more functional.

    Regards.

    Dr. John M

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from Steven Whatley who posted the following question

    Quote

Is there a way to remove apps from the new iOS 9 Sidebar? As more & more apps are being updated, the longer (taller, actually) the list gets. Sorry, but I don't need apps like AirCoaster to be in the Sidebar. :-)

It sure would be nice if the most frequently used Sidebar apps are sorted towards the bottom.

    Unquote

First there were questions about what is said side bar -

It is actually called Slide Over.

And As Barry Smitherman said quote it is only on iPads.  You pull the screen from the right edge and you’ll get a sidebar to open specific apps without leaving your main app.  Not true multitasking but its the best we have with the iPad Air and older unquote

And Slide Over is not supported on all iPads.

The ones that do support slide over are

    iPad Mini 2 and newer.

    iPad Air and newer

    and iPad Pro.

So nope my iPad 3rd Gen does not support it. Nor does the iPad 4th gen or the original iPad Mini.

Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts and comments in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Excellent episode, Rob. I still can't wait to get the new Apple TV. Soon

    From  Lawrence McFarland

Funny. The more I heard about Apple TV in this episode, the more I was impressed by

my Roku (which, by the way, can be remotely controlled with an app on my iPhone).

    From Myron Uecker

Screenshots may be difficult but it seems to be not as difficult to record a video from Apple TV 4. Still needs a Mac and USB-C.

    From Emiko Freund

I haven't finished listening yet, but I find entering passwords or searching is easier with my Nimbus controller.

    From Francisco Tapia

Roku has gotten better. you have your YouTube app, and more recently the PLEX player.  But you don't have AirPlay, so I can't simply send my current playlist or podcast to the Roku to listen on... I also can't just stream the WWDC videos or other media I easily have available on my iOS 9.x device.

    And From Faisal Keylani

I have tried all other competitor devices out there and I can tell you that they are not worth a penny.

It's correct that Apple TV 4 is not what we have expected , but it is still a lot better than any other device out there.  This is the exact same case whenever ppl compare iPhones to some other bad android phones out there. Whatever they do they will never come close to an iPhones performance!!

    2015/9/11/apple-pencil-could-be-a-

    big-hit-or-the-next-ping

There is an article that came out back in September - I have been holding on to - it is titled - Apple Pencil could be a big hit or the next Ping.

    This article is from AppleWorld.

It points out and accurately so - that when Steve Jobs announce the iPhone back in 2007 almost 9 years ago.  He asked the audience who wants a stylus - then he answered Nobody wants a stylus so lets not use a stylus.

The author of the article said quote

My prognosis: it will be a hit in the enterprise and creative pro markets, but of little interest for general consumers. unquote.

So now apple sits a week and a day away from releasing a $99 dollar stylus - and who wants it - well I do.

Why - many reasons - but one of the key ones - actually the KEY ONE - my youngest son is not just Profoundly Dyslexic or quote The most severe I have ever tested unquote from childrens mercy hospital in KC.  Not what you want to hear.  But he also has dysgraphia.  I am hoping and praying there will be some apps that offer up help for him to be able to write.  To me - that is what the iPad Pro holds out a hope for and if the Apple Pencil is half of what it seems to be - then even at $1500 for just the Apple Pencil would be well worth it for me.

I know a lot of people talk about the Apple pencil for Artists or as that article mentioned Enterprise - but to me - I see the educational potential to be the most appealing.

And once apps are specifically written for the Apple Pencil and iPad Pro - and can measure force and accurate head placement - then you will have something special and in some cases maybe even life changing.

If anyone listening develops anything specifically around this - let me know and you will get soooo much love on the show you will need to send me a restraining order to stop talking about you and your apps.

That said if anyone has used any good Dysgraphia apps - please let me know or really any apps on the iPad that help kids learn to write - even for cursive - as I am sure my older son would appreciate that help.

I will be doing some searching as well - and I am sure I will be reporting on this in the future.

    http://www.theatlantic.com/business/

    archive/2015/10/apple-q4-

    earnings/412726/

For the first time in a while Apple stocks rose in the weeks following their quarterly report - As is normal Apple beat their projections and Anal-ists guesses.

A big reason for the slight rise in the stock price was that Tim Cook said iPhone sales would rise for their fiscal 2016.

That caused many of the anal-ists to raise their Price targets.  Uncle Gene Munster raised his price target to $179 up from $172.  Walter Piecyk from BTIG has a target of $160.  Katy Huberty from Morgan Stanley - typically a bear on Apple has a Target of $152.  Mark Moscowitz with Barclays raised his target to $155 from $150.

And then in the last few days some quote Checks in the supply chain unquote - are causing some bears to scream the sky is falling the sky is falling.

A lot of that from a report from Kulbinder Garcha at Credit Suisse that reported Apple had lowered its component orders by as much as 10% according to quote our teams in asia unquote.

Here is the issue - traditionally - when these reports come out about supply chain checks - they have been wrong - usually dead wrong.  First suppliers can’t talk about Apple at all.  And second a lot of time when a supplier is missing their estimates it later on was not attributed to Apple reductions but other vendor reductions.

Then you have this from Brian White - who said his monitoring of component companies so weaker than average seasonality over all - but when looking at those for Apple suppliers they were delivering better than seasonal performance.  In other words the supply chain not supplying to Apple is seeing a slow down and those supplying to Apple are seeing an increase.

Daniel Ives essentially called those reporting a slow down in the supply chain as yelling fire in a crowded theater.

And what is funny or sad - is even Credit Suisse who is screaming the house is on fire and the sky is falling is saying Apple will out perform.  I am not saying they would say bad things hoping the price would fall so they can jump in an buy - but well…

Any way I think Horace Dediu of Asymco said it best when referring to earlier in the year when Apple price dipped.  quote Wall Street was having a huge Apple shares “Everything Must Go” sale and Apple was there, $14 billion cash in hand. Long term shareholders will be rewarded. Quarters are not important. unquote.   Buy Apple for the long term folks - don’t worry about the short term movement  - especially when it comes from quote supply chain checks unquote - which is well as reliable as Digitimes and BGR.

    rumors-point-to-upcoming-panic-

    mode-synaptic-provided-screens

This next one is from From Ron Leckfor in Ohio

And it is per the article titled - iPhone 7 rumors point to upcoming Panic Mode - and synaptic screens.

Essentially Apple has a patent they filed - which in a nut shell looks at which finger you use to unlock your device and if you pick  a specific finger it will trigger a panic mode alarm.  So maybe your train it for your thumbs and pointer fingers as a normal unlock - but for the middle finger on your non-dominate hand - if unlocked with that finger - triggers a panic or emergency mode.   Which might mean it immediately transmit an alert to the authorities, records photos and video and grabs audio.  Plus send out a beacon signal sending your location to designated parties.

Really that seems like something that could easily be implemented.

Maybe even Apple could add some predefined instructions if you open it with different fingers.  Like Left thumb - open directly to Camera Mode - or Right thumb open to email.  Or something like that. I mean why stop with just panic mode - add in some user defined modes as well.

The other rumor about iPhone 7 is that there will be a 4 inch version - which is not really a stretch - actually I would be shocked if that what the iPhone 7 launches there is not a 4 inch iPhone in the mix.

    From the email bag

    Hi Rob,

I've seen some rumors on the web about a smaller option iPhone when the 7 comes out. As someone who actually enjoys using Twitter with one hand, listening to music with my 5s in my normal size pockets, and laughing out loud at teen girls holding their 6 plus up to their face with both hands.. This sounds like an option for me.

    Love the show, thanks Rob!

    Regards,

    Eric

Thanks Eric - and as I said before - my Wife has not desire at all for anything larger than the 5S - she wants the smaller size iPhone - and many others do as well.  I really hope we see the three sizes of 4, 4.7 and 5.5 inches when the iPhone 7 launches next year.

I know one of the rumors even had a 4 inch iPhone launching in Q1 2016. I would guess that was someone fishing with link bait - which is why I am not linking to that article.

But speculating three sizes for the iPhone 7 - that to me is a safe and conservative speculation.

Speaking of speculating - here is a post in the google Plus community from Brenden Finnerty. quote

Is it too early to speculate on iOS 10? Oh well here is the major feature updates that I am guessing will arrive

The rumored Apple search engine is introduced

    -baked into spotlight

    -heavy Siri interaction

    -social features added in

-one touch features for directions, check in, and Yelp reviews

    Update to FaceTime

    -group chat support

-record chat option and save to iCloud

    -filters and emoji support

    -FaceTime app available for Android

    -Apple TV AirPlay option

    Notifications Revamped

-smart notifications across all devices. Based on activity and location, receive only the most important notifications at that time.

-new notification banner which scrolls along the bottom or on the side of the screen

And One log in. No more individual password per app, Touch ID gets you into all.

    VOICEMAIL - Thomas_CA_LEO_iPhone_security_android

    Hi Rob,

One thing almost never reported in any review of the Apple TV:

Is that Siri does not work if you are outside the 8 "blessed" countries, and that also the universal search doesn't work.

I live in Belgium so I cannot use voice as search but even if I input, letter by letter, the name of a movie or TV series it only returns  ITunes hits. I have the Netflix app installed and a monthly subscription but the search doesn't return any Netflix results.

A well known work around is putting the iTunes Store to USA. Siri and the universal search is then unlocked. Search does then return Netflix hits.

As Dutch is a very very small language I think it will take years before I will be able to us Siri &  universal search in my native language.

Also very strange we don't have the recent added categories and Top apps in the Belgium Store. So finding new apps is almost impossible. Again putting the Store in USA 'solves' this.

I don't have a USA iTunes account and don't think I can legally obtain one. Any thought about this?

Long time listener , first time mailer,

    Regards,

    Renaat

Hi Renaat - I know back in the day - you could get a gift card and then set up an iTunes account being a US one from anywhere in the world - but I am not sure if that is still possible.

Essentially it used to work like this - and again this used to work regardless of what country you were in.  First log out of your iTunes account - then choose the US iTunes store.  Do not create an account yet.

Browse around and find an app you want to download.

At that point you will prompted to log in or create a new account - choose Create new account.

Fill in your email address and password and security question.

Then you are asked for a credit card - if you choose a free app to download - simply choose NONE.  And you are good to go.

If you choose a paid one - then you can enter an iTunes gift card code for credit.

Again not sure if that still works - it was something I dug up from show notes back in 2009 and then again in 2011.

    Good luck

    Hi Rob,

How does apple keep skipping over the obvious. It's really silly to set up an iPad with a keyboard (almost turning it into a laptop)

But then still having to poke the screen from time to time. Seriously no mouse or trackpad support. Still? Seriously?

    Regards,

    Hi Rob

I just got my new Apple TV. Like you I'm enjoying it but have frustrations with the inability to pair my iPhones.  I have kids about your kids age and would like to start playing games with them. What remote do you use? Does it work well? Is there a website that lists Apple certified controllers?

    Regards,

    Mitch

Hi Mitch - I had a few people ask about this - which means I did a bad job going over this.  I purchased from the Apple store the SteelSeries Nimbus Wireless Gaming controller for $49.95 -  Link in the show notes for it.

Why do I like this - for one thing this really is a Made for iDevices remote.  It even charges via Lightening port.  Ok that is nice - but what is great is the performance - there is no lag.  Which is really really kinda of important in a game controller.  I mean unless you are looking for an excuse for poor game play.

It can be set up as one of four controllers in multiple player games.  Or put another way it supports being one of four.  If apple TV supports 4 different controllers is a point of debate I am still looking to confirm.  But if you did buy 4 of these each could be a different player.  However most of what I read says right now at least the Apple TV will only support two MFI Game controllers and one Siri Remote. for a total of 3 players.

So at this point it does not make sense to buy more than two of the controllers.

Maybe in a future update of TVOS Apple will up it to 4 controllers and the siri remote or at least 4 controllers with the siri remote.  But since the MFI controllers support 4 different players it would be nice to see Apple TV do the same.  Plus that would let the whole family play at once.

Hey Rob, not sure how these guys figured it out but here's a categorized list of all available Apple TV apps, updated daily

    Regards,

    Aric B

Thanks Aric for the link - which folks you can find by searching for Apple TV Apps - Top List - Slide to Play - in the shows notes for ep 372 at today in iOS dot com.

It is a nicer way to search through the lists of Apple TV apps.

I like the Most Recent feature.

So you can search for most recent apps in all categories or drill down into one specific category like games - kids or games - action or so on.

    Hi rob,

I am looking for a good ad blocker for my ios9 iphone5 but I couldn't find any.

Can you or the listeners can help me with this?

Btw, my iPhone is on 9.0.2 and jailbroken.

    Thanks and love the show,

    Hello Rob,

I moved up to a 6S and for some reason, I can’t get the Camera App (Apple’s) to keep HDR ON. I’ve been to the Apple Store and nobody there can make it stick either. Any suggestions sir?

    bounty-for-hacking-the-iphone

A startup called Zerodium offered a 1 Million dollar bounty if someone could figure out a hack for the iPhone where that exploit could be done via the browser.  The requirements were the remote exploit had to work on a new iphone or iPad running the latest version of iOS and would allow the attacker to install any app they wanted with full privileges.  Also it had to come via Safari, Chrome, a Text or multimedia message.

And there was actually a winner - the winning team submitted the exploit just a few hours before the expiration of the contest - which was in October.

The exploits found - as it required multiple one to do this - come via the Safari and Chrome browsers.

    a-jailbreakme-like-jailbreak-for-ios-

    9.1-9.2-but-you-cant-have-it/

However for those hoping for a JailbreakMe like jailbreak - which was the last Browser based jailbreak back in 2011 - yeah - keep hoping - because it does not sound like the company that put up the bounty has any plans to do jailbreaking.  They are using the info for their security company and their clients who include major corporation in defense, technology, and finance - looking for protection from Zero day attacks.

So essentially they will keep the hack info private and away from Apple - so they can say to their clients - hey this hack exists - so you should pay us to put in a patch to protect your employees and data.

Kind of like saying - hey we know which baby strollers have a fatal design flaw and we will tell you which ones to buy for your kids to keep them safe. Kinda like that.

Anyway - Expect Apple to be working to fix this quickly - once they find it.

    Hi Rob,

This is Sieghard from British Columbia, Canada. I would like to get a selfi stick for my wife for Christmas and was wondering if you and your listeners could provide some recommendations. When I looked on Amazon.ca for “selfi stick” I found more results than you can shake a stick at (pun intended). Of course it should have some sort of remote shudder functionality and I see that some seem to have that on the stick handle whereas others come with a little remote, just curious what your listeners have bought, liked or not liked.

    Regards,

    Sieghard

    Hey Rob,

Siri can have a selective accent.

Hopefully it'll be the same for most recent versions of iOS (I think it's more about the voice than the OS), but I'm currently running 9.0.2, and under the 'Voice' selection within Settings->General->Accessibility->Speech->Voices->English (US) - whew - I'm using the 'Samantha (Enhanced)' voice.

Ensure 'Speak Selection' is turned on (in the Speech section), and then have Samantha (Enhanced) speak the following sentence:

It's getting late here in Boston.

Nothing special, right? Okay, now select and have Samantha speak the following, lengthy sentence and see if you notice something different about the pronunciation of a particular word:

It's getting late here in Boston, and the skies are beginning to clear up.

If it's not obvious, slow her speech speed down a bit and try again. I'd love to hear from the programmer(s) about why the different results from differing sentence lengths, but I doubt we'll ever know.

FWIW, I tried a couple of other 'Enhanced' voices but didn't hear the same pronunciation variance. I also tried a few other large city names that have stereotypical pronunciations by locals (eg Chicago, New York, etc), but to no avail. It looks like, Samantha (Enhanced) only has one little 'trick' up her sleeve.

    04:08

First up I do want to mention briefly that iOS 9.2 beta 2 was released to devs - as was iOS 9.2 beta 1 since the last episode.  items new in the 9.2 beta -

Safari View Controller - this is the new safari window that opens up when you click on a link in some apps.  It can now be dismissed using an edge swipe.

There is a new Action Extensions support in safari that allows third party applications to tap into mobile safari.  For example 1Password could auto-fill passwords if given permission by the user.

But mostly from what I read iOS 9.2 both beta’s 1 and 2 were about squashing bugs man.  So unless you are a dev - really at this point not much reason to install the iOS 9.2 beta.  Unless you just have to live on the edge.

Ok - now on to talking about Apple TV.

    05:20

Before I get into your Apple TV reviews and others out there - I want to go over my Thoughts of the new Apple TV 4th gen.

First off - it is not perfect - far from it.  But I do really like it.

Some of the good to start.

I like the Apps - my kids love the apps.  Now mind you I have the Game Controller and that definitely improves the quality of the Apple TV experience.

Actually let me read an email sent in that fits well with that.

    Hi Rob,

So far so good! My 6-year-old son is playing Crossy Road as we speak.

The great news I totally wasn't expecting is that it plays slow-mo videos directly over AirPlay. And they load almost instantly. With the older Apple TV it took awhile to buffer videos and slow-mo didn't work at all.

Bad news is I can't connect the Remote app from my iPhone 6s. Hopefully there's an update coming soon.

    Regards,

    Aric B

Per playing videos via AirPlay I had the Apple TV 2nd gen (well technically still do) and Airplaying videos was painful. I mean mindnumbingly un-apple like painful.

With the Apple TV 4th gen - WOW WOW WOW.   One of my favorite if not my favorite feature of Apple TV 4th gen is how well videos play on it from my iphone 6+

Aric - Thanks for the email - and yes - the lack of support of the remote app - painful to say the least when having to enter emails and passwords.  I will get to that in a bit.

But games are really great - and having the second game controller - I was able to set it up to play cross roads with two players at once - which the kids love.  To do that - get to the screen where you can choose your avatar - and swipe to the left all the way.  And you can choose two player option.  kind of hidden.

Ok - So I like the Apps and the Video playback via AirPlay.  Those are two big plusses.  I really really like the volume control on the remote - it makes it so I don’t have to have two remote all the time.  I do like that the main remote can be used as a motion controller like with a Wii.  Check out the free game labyrinth for some nice motion control action.

For other night time Action - check out the free Fireplace Apps.

A lot of the Value for Apple TV 4th gen will ultimately be in the Apps - that is why I was so excited for the Apps to be added.

That also means there will be a little bit a slow period for that value to be seen as it just launched.  More apps will be added - word of mouth will kick in - and you will see and hear of better apps - thus increasing the value of your Apple TV quite a bit - but to start with you have to look at it right now as almost in a beta phase.

That said - right now I already have close to 50 apps installed and have not paid for one of them.  With well over half of those apps being game apps for the KIDS - wink wink.   Calculation how much I would have paid for similar apps on the Xbox and the Apple TV has already paid for itself.

But lets not forget it is also a set top box for Video - and well the netflix app and HBO now apps are there - and we get back Youtube - I was on the 2nd gen.  So a little plus there.  And there are other video streaming services and apps that were not on Apple TV - but to be fair - were on the Roku - so not sure how much a plus that is - just a getting to on par there.

Now lets talk about some of the issues I have seen.

    1.  I mentioned this is a set top box and you use it to watch videos and videos are watched in the dark.  Apple thanks for the option to light up the buttons - oh - wait never mind there is no option to light up the buttons - unless you count needing to keep my iPhone near by to look at the remote.  I guess over time I will learn where all the buttons are and not need to look - yes I know the old remote did not have it - but the old remote I was used to.

    2. Entering in emails - passwords or any text is a major lesson in frustration - apple gives you a long string of characters and you have scroll back and forth.  There is no box of characters where you can move left right up and down - making it faster.

    3. Podcasts App - as in the complete lack there of.  I am assuming this is still in development - as there have been some screen shots from demo units at stores that show it.  But still where is it - ok - really can’t complain to loud no one actually listens to podcasts on set top boxes - but if you were one of those three people I bet you are pissed.

    4. SIRI - why will it not work in search boxes.  Would be really nice for you to just say - Tesla of Go-Karts - in the youtube app and it pull up those videos for you.

    5. Getting used to when I push the top of the remote to do an action and when I push the play / pause button.  Honestly some of the times I do one and not the other make no sense.  But it is something I need to get used to - so basically Learning Curve - would be this item - and the fact there is one.

    6. There is no quick and easy way to see how much of your storage you have used.  At least not that I could find.

    7.  Some apps require downloads of the same content over and over.  For example one racing app - required you download a specific data pack for different courses.  So you get the download and play that course but then finish that course and go to the next - again another download - but if you go back to the first course - you needed to download again.  Would be nice if it left things in a temp storage area and only deleted when you needed to download other items and deleted based on longest times since you last used.  There seems to be a lot of re-downloading of content for apps with different courses and data packs.

There is an article from Jonny Evans at ComputerWolrd titled - 7 Apple TV Flaws Apple should fix Fast.  And I think that fix fast item is important. His 7 by the way are mostly different then my 7.  A lot of writers have written about a lot of issues or complaints they have - and well - lets play some feedback from listeners of Tii and I will try to comment after or even during each.

HUH.  The optimist in me is saying that the update to the Remote app is minutes or maybe Hours or at words days away.  The pessimist say - well it is a g-rated show so I can’t say what the pessimist in me says.  Hint - one of the words rymes with duck?????  With a What the before that.

And there is another much longer email from Scott in DC to end the episode on his thoughts and his disappointment for getting the AppleTV.

But my overall review is this - I really like the new Apple TV - and see a lot of potential to love it soon.  But that will require some updates to the remote app and better layout of the text entry screens.  And of course some killer apps.

I mentioned before the Multiplayer Crossy Roads app option - if you find any other games where you can have two or more players at once - please email those to me - todayinios at gmail dot com - and I will put together a list as a text post I put up on the Tii Site and in the Tii App and keep updating as more come in.

You’ll get the nicest sheets you’ve ever owned for about half the price of what stores and boutiques would be charging for sheets of far lower quality.  I really could not believe how excited my wife was to get these new sheets.  And the box they came in and the individual pouches for the sheets and pillow cases - well the presentation was incredible and very Apple-Esq

Until Boll & Branch, no one challenged the department stores - so they’ve been overcharging you for crummy sheets forever and there just was no where else to shop.  But Now you can buy right from boll and branch dot com  - with boll spelled B O L L.  Folks You can kiss those retail markups goodbye.

These sheets are only sold online at boll and branch dot com - you can’t buy them in any stores.  That is how they keep the pricing low and free of markups.

But here is the best part - don’t take my word for it - try them out yourself for 30 days risk free.  Boll and Branch is so sure your going to fall in love with their sheets that they give you 30 nights to try them out.  If you don’t love them for ANY reason - they will take them back and refund you without any hassle at all.

And Folks with the new Apple TV that means more time spent in your bed - so make sure you have the best sheets to go with the best Set-top box.

If you order right now - they will give you $50 off a set of sheets plus give you free shipping.  Just go to Boll and branch dot com and use promo code Tii - that right $50 off by going right now to B O L L   A N D   B R A N C H  dot com and using the promo code T I I

    fourth-gen-apple-tv-with-siri-remote-and-tvos-app-store

Apple Insider had a very detailed review.

But lets cut to the chase - the end of the review.

    Pros

The siri remote with touchpad works great

Universal search finally makes it easier to locate content

the app store and iCloud integration are off to a promising start

and Game controller support is already better then on iOS

    Cons

Siri doesn’t support the app store or apple music - yet

why no iOS remote app support

and at $149 some may want to wait for more cord cutting incentives.

As I said earlier there were many other reviews - but I think Fortune had one of the best titles which sums it up well.

Quote Apple TV’s bid to fix Television Strong - despite flaws unquote.

And the good news is most flaws are things that can be fixed in a future update.

    https://plex.tv

One thing I know a few people had hoped for with an App store was support of Plex for Apple TV - and that support did come in the way of the Plex App.  So congrats to all those Plex users.

For those that do not know what plex is - quote Plex is a centralize home media playback system with a powerful central server - the plex media server - that streams its media to many plex player apps - the server is available on many platforms like windows, OS TEN, and many flavors of Linux as well as many NAS devices like ReadyNAS or Synolgy - unquote

To break it down further - Plex allows you play media you have stored in a centralized place - in another place.  And now one of those another places is Apple TV.  Which is cool because it is connected to a big screen TV.

If any of the Plex Users want to call in with their review of the Plex app - it would be appreciated - and after my over simplification probably highly warranted.

    http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-take-a-

    screenshot-on-apple-tv-4/

I got so excited when I saw this next title come across the wire so to speak-  it was the title quote How to take a screeshot on AppleTV 4 unquote.  Oh cool - I thought - hold two buttons down or something like that and bam you have a screen shot - that will come in handy.  Sadly that is not exactly how it works.

Step 1 is launch the mac App store - yes Mac App store - so right there I knew I was going to be disappointed.

Step 2 - search for and download Apples Xcode Development environment

Step 3 - with Xcode installed connect Apple TV to your computer via a USB-C to USB cable - Joy - need to get one of them.

Step 4 - Launch the recently installed Xcode application

Step 5 - Select Window Option from Top Menu

    Step 6 - Select Devices

Step 7 - From the list of devices select the Apple TV

Step 8 Click on Take a Screenshot

So yeah ummm - like I said definitely a little disappointed in the process.  Possible Yes - Practical - Heck no.

By the way that same article goes over how to record video.  Which I can see being a little more useful - if interested the two of you can go to the link in the show notes again titled - How to take a screen shot on an Apple TV 4

    Hi Rob,

I would like to share my observations about the moving of the headphone jack and power button on the 6/6s and the 6 plus/6s plus phones. Before, when listening with headphones on my previous 4s, the phone in my back pocket would pick up pocket lint in the power jack port. If I just put the phone in my back pocket after using it (without headphones), I would drop it in top end first and it would repeatedly trip the power button sucking the battery life out of it.  The new placement of these two items solved both problems. Sure it took a little getting used to the power button on the side but I am very pleased with the changes made.  I don't know if this is why the changes were made but it works quite well for me.

    Regards,

    Hi Rob

This is in relation to Katies voiceover problem i had the same issue. All she has to do is go into settings and general, accessability and to where it says voiceover on, select it and she will find more settings, scroll down to speech where she will find default dialect. She has the option to enhance whichever dialect she selects Ok hope this helps,

    Regards,

    Dave in Limerick Ireland

    Hi Rob,

For Katie who upgraded to 9.1 and now has a strange voice over language

Go to settings, General, accessibility, voice-over, speech

From their choose default language and then select the language that you want.

I have noticed that sometimes after upgrading voice-over will lose the enhanced language even if it is selected as an option. So you need to select it again and it may need to download the enhanced language version before it will be installed correctly

    Thanks Rocco

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from MATT SHAW who posted the following question

    Quote

I'm looking for an app that will scan receipts and harvest the transaction date, business name, sale prices, total etc. for searching and sorting. I am aware that some apps can harvest names and contact information from business cards and I am looking for something similar for receipts. I don't need this for expense account purposes so it's O.K. if it does not

provide that. I've tried a few receipt scanner apps but they don't seem to do this.

The concensus response was to look at Expensify  and Tim Saulmon did confirm it will do this.  Thanks Tim.

Any idea if the new Apple TV has a Sky Go app? If so, I'm ready to push the purchase button 👇🏻

And looking at the answers - it appears that Sky News app is available but not Sky Go.  But if anyone in the UK finds out about Sky Go being available for the  Apple TV 4 please let us know

    http://9to5mac.com/2015/10/30/ipad-pro-release-date/

There have been a few rumors about when the iPad Pro would go on sale - 9 to 5 mac was reporting it will be available on Nov 11th  well at least to purchase.  However Sams club is reporting it is available for pre-order now - and it will be shipping to customers on Nov 13th.  Sam’s club info was not really a rumor however as it was available for pre-order already - and are already sold out.  Base unit with 32 GB and wifi was $787 and the 128 gb wifi only was $937.  which both are just a little lower then the $799 and $949 prices apple said they would be.

    http://www.apple.com/shop/buy-ipad/ipad-pro

I was very much expecting if you want to apple dot com slash shop slash buy dash iPad slash iPad dash pro - that the buying page would be live - but it is not yet.

Maybe this weekend - maybe on Monday.

Maybe Apple will do what they did with the Apple TV - Monday morning around 6:00 AM PT / 9:00 AM ET it will become available on line.

Really surprised Apple let Samsclub beat them to the punch.

Actually shocked it was for sale on the Sam Clubs store before the Apple store.

Again note Sams club was not the Cellular version.

As a reminder the per what will be available for the iPad Pro.

there are 3 versions - Wifi only 32 GB version - A wifi only 128 GB version and a Wifi+Cellular 128 GB version.  Pricing for all three are $799, $949 and $1079 respectively.

Then there is the Apple Pencil - $99

And the Apple Smart Keyboard - $129

so fully loaded and with the pencil and keyboard and you are just over 13 hundred dollars for a total of $1,307.

I will send out a push notification once I hear it is for sale - and will post in the Google+ community as well.  So make sure you have the Tii App and have joined our google plus community as todayinios dot com slash community.

    ipad-pro-is-a-pilot-fish-for-apples-arm-laptop.html

MacWorld had a good article titled - The iPad Pro is a pilot fish for Apples’ ARM laptop.

Which makes sense as it should be as fast or almost as fast as the latest Macbook.  If we see the slight bump is speed expected vs the iPhone 6S+.

The article also makes an interesting point. Vs the original iPad or the original MacBook Air or the Original iPhone for that matter - the iPad Pro is coming to market fully powered and then some.

My feeling when we look back a couple of years from now - I think the biggest thing we will note about the iPad being under powered at is storage.  I think 128 GB max is too low.  It should have been at least 258 GB if not more.

I know cloud this and cloud that  - but the problem with clouds are they are not always right above your head.  Your iOS device is not Joe Btfsplk - bonus points for those that got that reference.  Of course if you know the back story on Joe - you don’t want your iOS device to be him anyway.  Point is sometimes the clouds clear up and it is a sun shinny day.  And that is not good for data.

So having storage - especially for business reasons is nice.

I did read an article at applecontroll dot com by Ahsan Zafar who is reporting of feedback by Fraser Spears who was able to get his hands on a iPad Pro at a recent london Education event for almost an hour.

He reports being impressed with the iPad Pro - finding it ideal for productivity Tasks.

And found harder for simpler for tasks like browsing and netflix.  Really you are at an education event and you logged into Netflix.  So tells Fraser us - how did the porn sites look ?  I am guessing the one handed use would be harder there as well.

He did say the Apple Pencil is extremely impressive and calls it the best iPad stylus he ever used and palm rejection is nearly perfect - yeah - lets see how it handles lefties.

He was a little unhappy with the iPad Pro’s smart Keyboard because of size.

I am very interested in testing out the Apple Pencil and keyboard to see how they work.

Hopefully I will have one in the next week plus.

Here is an article I have keep pushing to the next episode.  How long have I been pushing it - well here is the email that came with it.

    Hi Rob,

Chiefs look pretty good so far.

This article has some good insight. FYI.

    Dr. John M

Yeah - saying the Chief’s look good means it has been a while.

The article is titled How iPad Pro and Microsoft Surface Compare.  and it is from CBS MoneyWatch.

It is a good article to review if you are looking at the iPad Pro for a business use case.

Also if you are on the fence - well don’t go ordering this week.  As there will be many of the usual suspects releasing reviews of the iPad Pro next week - if it is going on sale on Monday.  These are the reviews from people Apple gave review units to early.

But once it ships to the public - that is when the good reviews come out.

No offense to any of the usual suspects - but you don’t get to be a usual suspect unless you pull a few punches.  Just Sayin.

Plus if you listen to this show - you get my feedback - and I have been called both and Apple Fan boy only concerned about his stock and then also accused of pissing all over Apple Fan boys and Apple.  So I think that at least gives me credibility if both sides are upset at me.

I think I should call this next segment the How right were WE segment - And this refers to issues with Android that make us realize we were right with the decision we made to go with iOS. I have some music in the background I found.  Which I think is CC and ok to use.

Actually have 3 quick articles this week.

One is titled - ACLU: Google is embarrassed by Android Security, isn’t protecting vulnerable users like Apples iOS

The article starts by saying quote the difference between encryption and security on iOS and Android isn’t just a technical issue - but a  digital security divide unquote - this according to the principal technologist for the ACLU Chris Soghioan.

He said this is because quote "Apple sells luxury goods and Google gives away services for free in return for access to data," unquote, highlighting that the difference wasn't purely technical but a corporate decision.

quote "Google has by far the best security team of any company in Silicon Valley, unquote Soghioan said, but continued, quote "the security people I know at Google are embarrassed by Android. unquote

    48:05

    http://www.redmondpie.com/android-factory-reset-

    protection-can-be-bypassed-on-samsung-phones-video/

Next up in this segment is an article titled.

Quote Android Factory Reset Protection can be bypassed on Samsung Phones unquote from Redmond pie.

To which I say - of course.

Android Lollipop was supposed stop this from being possible.

This being access to the device after resetting an Android device via Recovery mode.

In short - you were not supposed to be able to force a reset on the device without it wiping everything clean and keeping you out.  Thus is someone stole your Android phone they would not be able to access data.  But there is a simple bypass that gets around that and allows the thief or spy to get access to your data.  Which I think leads us into this next one nicely.

    phone-in-spectre.html

And Thanks to William T for this next one or as he says - this sums up Android Pretty Well.

Plus I had to get a Bond reference in this episode somehow.  And this story is great.  Let me start with this quote with regards to the latest bond film Spectre

"Sam and Daniel don't like the Sony phone for the film, In their minds, the Sony phone is not the 'best’."   said president of worldwide business affairs Andrew Gumpert in an email that was scooped up in the Sony Pictures leak.

They rejected a $5 Million Offer for Bond to Carry the phone with a total of an $18 million offer for being called the exclusive vendor.

But it gets better.  Sam and Daniel turned down a similar $5 Mil offer for bond to carry with total of $50 Million deal from Samsung.

Yes - the idea of Bond using an Android was such an anti-bond image Daniel Craig and Sam Medes turned down $50 Mil.  Look even David Niven and George Lazenby would have turned down this offer.

Heineken beer however  - no problems - and well that really sums it up.

I just thought I'd let you know that I tried to review the Tii app on numerous occasions  and unfortunately it is virtually impossible for me. I think it's because of Voice over i don't know. All i know is it is VERY frustrating! I get as far as selecting 5 stars and my name in like 10 seconds and then it brings me back out to the app description page 😠 any suggestions are welcome

    a-watchcase-power-bank-for-apple-watch

This week for a kickstarter project - we have one called Amber - a watchcase power bank for Apple Watch.

This one had a goal of $50,000 - it has raised almost double that and has until Nov 13th at 10:28 AM to finish funding.

From their description quote A chic watchcase which enables you to charge Apple Watch on the go, no need to sit at a desk and wait, charges iPhone as well.

    unquote

So this is a mix of a case for your apple watch and a battery pack - and when your Apple watch is in the case - it is being charged.  But you can also plug your iPhone into it to charge it as well.

For the road warrior - this looks like a very nice product.

Pricing on this is $55.  And they say it will ship in Feb 2016.

There are four colors to choose from.

It looks nice but there is one design flaw I see - and the is when your watch is in the case - the side of the case blocks you from seeing the whole face.  If they had notched out the case or made it lower in the front - when your Apple watch is on its side and charging and the case is open - then you would be able to see the watch in night stand mode.  Something they should have thought of.  especially since some of their photos show it in night stand mode - but with over half the face of the watch blocked.

The other down side is you have to use your own Apple watch charger cord.  So it is really $55 + $29 for the cord.

It is nice looking and functional - and is one I came close to funding.  But did not pull the trigger on this one - I need to control my spending on kickstarter.

Again if you travel a lot - this is a nice option - hence the reason over 1,300 people have funded this already - search for Amber at kickstarter dot com

Here is another kickstarter project around the Apple Watch and charging - this we received the heads up fromCarl Vandenberg in the google+ community who wrote:

    quote

This looks like a great Kickstarter project for Apple Watch owners.  I got the first project from Enblue and it was very good quality.

"We are very, very proud of the final product. MOVE!, the very first wireless charger, power bank and mobile docking solution for iPhone and Apple Watch. " quote from Enblue Kickstarter project MOVE

    unquote

This project is titled - MOVE - The ultimate cable free travel pal for apple watch and iPhone

It had a goal of $40,000 and has just passed it and has until Nov 30th at 11:00 PM CT to be funded.

The describe it as quote Move the first cable free travel companion for your apple watch - charge your apple watch and iPhone anytime and anywhere you want unquote

This one does not require you bringing your own apple watch cable.

Features include - Lightning Adapter, Magnetic Apple Watch Module, Wall Charger, 2 - 2200 mAh batteries, Docking Station, Travel Adapter and Nightstand buddy - what ever that means.

Pricing on this one is $129 - vs $85 for the last one - but this one does not require any extra cords.  Delivery on this one is slated for April 2016.

If you are looking for a portable way to charge your Apple Watch - you have two projects to choose from - I recommend you watch both videos before making a choice.

For this one Search for Move in the show notes for ep 371 - as searching for Move at kickstarter does not find it.

    fixes-ios-9-compatibility-issue-that-blocked-some-vpns.html

    Hi Rob

I’ve been listening intently to get your go ahead to update to the IOS 9 series software, which when you discussed it before today you indicated was still a problem for VPN users.  Then today you indicated that we should all go ahead and update.  But I haven’t heard you change your position on the VPN issue.  Can you please clarify?  Were your instructions to update just for those who do not use VPN or has the VPN issue been corrected?  Thank you in advance.

    REgards,

    Joan

    Hi Joan,

What I was saying if you already updated to iOS 9 - then update to 9.1

But - if you are still at iOS 8.X - and holding off because of the VPN issue - I can’t recommend you update yet - as I have still not been able to find confirmation the VPN issues are fixed.

Sorry for not making that clear on the show.  I will hopefully have an answer one way or the other on the next episode.

    Rob W

And one of the answers I have is this - Cisco updated its AnyConnect VPN client - and the new update now works with iOS 9.x

So now Split-tunnel VPN’s again work correctly.

However there is not much news on the other VPN’s affected.

At this point - if you are needing to VPN into your work - it is best that you specifically ask your IT guru at work - if your VPN works with iOS 9.1  - Especially if you are using Freedome VPN, ExpressVPN, and Open VPN clients.

    Fun times.

    QUOTE Hi Moondog,

    Long time listener.

    I am an app developer

Side Bar - Well played - using Moondog - it shows you are a listener. I get lots of bogus emails from devs that say things like I love your blog - umm yeah.  ok - end side bar.

I recently got an Apple Watch. My wife (barely) excused the purchase because I told her I was going to make apps for it.

Side bar again - When you say wife barely with barely in brackets excused - are you saying she is barely your wife or she barely excused you or maybe it is both because of the purchase.  Hmmm - English is a funny language.

    Ok end side bar.

One of the main apps I was hoping to find was one where the user could create a custom set of instructions that they may use in the future, whether it be making a recipe, or setting something up at their home or work.

There are so many hands on tasks that I do periodically, and I don't want to worry if I skip a step, miss a timer, or make a mistake, and I don't want to pull up my phone every time to see the next step to perform.

After vigorous searching, I came to find there is not yet an Apple Watch app where you can create your own tasks, preset timers if you want, and have them presented in step by step instructions on your watch, so I made the app myself.

It's not obvious at first how useful it is, because the concept of how smart watches can help your life is still new, but after you use it, it may seriously change the way you do things every day.

After making it, I realized that this will especially revolutionize cooking. So if you are a chef, then this app will be your best friend, but it is designed to be useful for everyone.

Because it is essentially instructions for any task on your wrist, I titled it "Wristructions" (one word)

side bar - Nice use again of knowing how I say things on the show with the use of One Word - end side bar ,

and it is free to everyone with an Apple Watch.

Once this app gets popular, I am planning on charging for it, so get it while it's still free :)

    Hope this helps you all,

    Regards,

    Chris Meehan

Well Chris - thanks for making this app and letting Tii Listeners know about it. Folks search for Wristructions - one word in the App store or in the show notes for ep 371.

Hi Rob, Congrats on the World Series championship to share with the boys. Pretty cool. This looks sweet. Dr. John M

Thanks Dr. John for the congrats and for the heads up on this.

What Dr. John is talking about is the 4G LTE CellSpot from T-Mobile - this is as they call it the first-ever 4G LTE mini tower - or in other words a PicoCell.

It is designed for indoor use up to 3,000 sq ft.

And according to the press release it is available as of Nov 2nd to Simple Choice Postpaid customers at absolutely no cost for as long as they are with T-mobile.  They also talk about just a $25 security deposit - but if you have been with them a bit - they will waive the fee.  At least they did for me when I called to order it.

Yes - Called - as it is not available on the website store.

I called 877-746-0909 - and you need to ask them for help getting it - expect to be bounced around to a couple of people - but once to the right person it was quick and painless and penniless to get one.  I should have it by Wednesday.  I am excited as most of the time in my house where I live I am in the one bar - -110 db range.

It looks like you can also visit your local t-mobile store to get one - but since they are not charging for shipping and also waived the $25 deposit fee - I would suggest trying the 877-747-0909 number - if you again are a T-mobile customer and say you are interested in the 4G LTE CellSpot that t-mobile announced on November 2nd.

I will report back on how it was to set up and how it works on future episodes.

    Hi,

I have been watch your show for a little over a year. I have a question that I hope you can answer.  Is there any way to pull the voice mails off of my iPhone and put them on my pc.  My mom has just passed away and I would like to back it up to my pic so that I would never loose them. Is there any way to do this?

    Thanks,

    Richard Banks

    Hi Rob!

Is there any way of using the iPhone to record phone calls?  I would like to be able to use this feature when on an important call.

    Thank you. Love the show.

    Regards,

    Shawna

Hi Shawna - there are four ways to record phone calls with an iPhone.  Method one - is work through a 3rd party service where they act as the man in the middle and your calls go through them and they record the calls.  These services cost money on a per minute charge usually. And you set it up where all incoming and outgoing calls go through them.  Not what I would recommend.

Second is getting a physical device you connect to your phone to pull out the call - RECAP is one of those items.

the third way is to jailbreak and install an app to allow call recording.

And the fourth and easiest method first you sign up with the service Freeconferencecalling dot com.  From that you get a conference call line - where you can record your call.

What you do is you set them up as a contact and remember your passcode and pin.  I make the Passcode and pin the last name and first name is ConfCall - and before you call someone - you call the conference call line - then type 5 and star - you will hear conference call recording. Then on your phone you type add call - and call who you want.  then once they answer - you merge the calls.  So it is you - them and the conference call line - which is recording everything.

When the call is done - the other person hangs up - and you then type - 5 star and if you did it right you will hear conference recording stopped.

That is the easiest and cheapest way to record calls on an iPhone.  By the way if someone calls you and you know you want to record it - just tell them you are on another call and need to get rid of them and then do the add call - call the conference number - do the 5 star to start it - and then do the merge calls.

You should check your state on the legality of this - for example since I am in Kansas - it is fine for me to record someone with out telling them - I am in a one party state. which means only one party needs to give approval to record a conversation.  But some states require both parties to consent.  If you google One party states - you will see a wiki article on this.  Again always abide by the law when doing phone recordings.

Thanks to Jeffrey, Ron, Emiko, Larry, Richard and Carl for their generous donations to the show toward the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil and keyboard.  Folks if you would like to help out as well - there is a donate button in the lower right side of the today in iOS dot com site.  Thanks again to everyone that has helped out.

    Hi Rob,

I just couldn't make it past the bottom of the 12th. Longest game 1 in series history, I read. I'll have to try to catch a replay of the bottom of the 14th, sounds like it was exciting.

Being a Brewers fan, (I guess. Sigh.), it's actually nice to have someone to cheer for in the World Series. Go Royals!!
