    http://www.zdnet.com/article/ios-malware-acedeceiver-can-

    infect-non-jailbroken-apple-devices/

Before we get into what Apple announced at their event today - I want to go over this bit of Link bait mis-reporting. This was report out there by many - but let me read this title of a post from ZDNet.

quote iOS malware AceDeceiver can infect non-jailbroken Apple devices unquote

And they follow that with this lead paragraph.  quote

This new strain of malware designed for the iPhone and iPad poses a major risk to hundreds of millions of devices, because it can infect non-jailbroken devices without the user's knowledge. unquote

Wow that sounds really really ominous - hide all your iOS devices the sky is falling.  Well except for that whole major risk part and without the users knowledge part.

See later on in the article is this minor little point.

    quote

"With AceDeceiver, the victim first downloads a Windows program named Aisi Helper, which purports to be software that provides jailbreaking, system backup, device management and system cleaning.”

    unquote

Oh and that app Aisi Helper is just in China right now.  So for AceDeceiver to work - you need to have a windows machine - install the App Aisi Helper and you be in China.

So yeah that whole - Major risk and without the users knowledge part - well if not flat out  mis-reporting - then it is bad reporting at best.

Is this a risk - yes - a very minor risk - which requires the end user to first install an App from a questionable at best source from china and one that says it will help with jailbreaking - and then it does a man in the middle attack.

You have to work very hard to get burned by this one.

    From John H

quote New iPhones and iPads coming out in a few days. Will there be a bingo card? Lots of rumors to bet on! unquote

Hi John Not this time round - I felt the rumors were really not about new category products but updates to products for the most part. Some overdue updates.

The event started out with 40 years in 40 seconds video - ohh and the little dig at Newton - where they actually scribbled it out.

Tim started talking about 1 Billion Apple Devices in use around the world.

Then he talked about the Apple v FBI debate - and he asked how much power the government should have over our data.  And he said he believes it is Apples responsibility to protect you and your data and Apple will not backdown from this responsibility.

The first major thing they went into was about the Environment.

Lisa Jackson came on stage to talk about what Apple is doing to protect it.  Apple’s goal is 100% using renewable energy in all their facilities.  Currently 93% of facilities world wide are running on Renewable energy.

Then they talked about 99% of packaging materials coming from recyclable paper or paper coming from sustainable forests.

There was a video showing how apple is now recycling old iOS devices.

Then they switched over from health of the world to your health - and talked about their Health app initiatives - and some of those studies possible with Research Kit studies.   Which of course they had a video for.  And the key message is that Research kit is not just about the research - but the tools / results they are getting from all the data being collected - like being able to predict when a seizor is about to happen for someone with Epilepsy.

And they also announced the launch of CareKit - with the first app launching is for Parkinson.

Tim came back on stage - and as predicted announced some Apple Watch Bands.  First up with the new woven Nylon band.

Also a Space Black Milanese band.  Some really exciting stuff here.

And then the Price for the Apple Watch came down to $299 for the base price.  So a $50 price cut for the Apple Watch - and just that quick -

Tim rolled right into Apple TV -  I think they actually spent more time talking about Yaks eating hay under Solar panels than they did about the Apple Watch.  Seriously.

Per Apple TV there are over 5,000 apps on the App store for Apple TV now.  Tim Talked about some different apps - including the NCAA march madness app.

He talked about the new features for Apple TV coming in the new update available today.  But basically it was about the Apps that Siri will search through.  Which now includes - Movies and TV shows on iTunes, Showtime, PBS, PBS Kids, HBO Now, Netflix, Hulu, ABC, FXNow, Daily Planet Now, Watch Disney XD, Watch Disney, Watch Disney Junior, FOXnow, NBC, CBS, A&E, History, lifetime and FYI.  That those last few being added shortly.

As mentioned on past episodes - Folders is a new feature being added to the latest update to tvOS.  There is also Dictation when you need to enter info in a text box - this includes usernames and passwords,  iCloud Photo Library and also Live Photos support.

Plus Siri for the App store.

Again that update to tvOS is available today as in Now.

Next up was the announcement as expected of the new iPhone - the new 4 incher.  Apple stated they sold over 30 Million 4 Inch iPhones in 2015.  For those with really good memories that is vs the total of 231.6 Million iPhones sold in 2015 or somewhere over 13% of all iPhones sold in 2015 were 4 inches.

The rumors leading up to the event was it would be called either the iPhone 5SE or the iPhone 6SE and well it seems like even Apple could not decide as the new iPhone is called simply the iPhone SE.  Which is really strange.  So yes the iPhone lineup is now the 6S+, 6+, 6S, 6 and SE.  What does that mean for the next iPhone - well most likely it will not rhyme with Heaven or Devein.  Most likely the next iPhones will be iPhone and iPhone Pro.  So then it would be iPhone Pro, iPhone and iPhone SE - but then in update years - what happens????  Oy - it is going to get confusing no matter what happens in September.

Back the iPhone SE or just SE from this point on.

One of the rumors was it was going to be similar to the iPhone 5S in size - but have the rounded edges / styling of the 6 and 6S.  Ummm - No.  It is actually the EXACT same package as the 5S.

Both the 5S and SE are 123.8 mm x 58.6 mm x 7.6 mm - the buttons and ports are all in the exact same spots - if you have a case for the 5S or 5 - it should work fine with the SE - which is actually good news.

The only thing different is there is now a Rose Gold version for the SE to go along with Silver, Gold and Space Grey versions.

But as they say - looks can be deceiving - because inside - it is nothing at all like the 5S - and is really almost - with quotes around almost - the same as the 6S.

The SE has the same A9 Processor as the 6S. With the same embedded M9 co-processor.   Yes - that means it supports always on siri.  And a big YES - it will support live photos.  It has the same 12 MP iSight camera as the 6S and 6S+ - seems Apple must have gotten a good deal on that camera - more on that later.

The SE supports the new 63 Mege Pixel Panaroma spec. It can Capture 4k Video at 30 fps.  1080p HD video up to 60 fps,  Slo-mo video up to 240 fps.   True Tone Flash, Bluetooth 4.2,

There is NFC - which means support for Apple Pay. Well if you live in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and China.

But while the SE almost the same as the 6S internally it is not identical.  Some of the specs where it is different.

It only comes in two storage options - 16 don’t choose me GB and 64 this is the one you want GB.  There is no 128 GB option.  If you are even remotely thinking of the 16 GB version - did we mention the 4K video and Slo-mo up to 240 fps - yes - yes we did - so any sane person would be best to stay far far away from the 16 GB version.  Just Sayin.

Some other ways it is different than the 6S - the LTE is not LTE Advanced - just the same LTE as in the 6 and 6+.  Same with Wifi - matching the specs of the 6 and 6+.

The Fingerprint sensor is not the 2nd gen fingerprint sensors. The FaceTime Camera or front facing camera depending on what you want to call it - is also the same as the 6 and 6+ - at 1.2 MegaPixels - vs the 5 Mega Pixels for the 6S and 6S+.  But the SE does have the retina flash for FaceTime selfies.

Battery Life for the SE is the same as for the 6 and 6S for the most part.  With up to 14 hours of Talk time on 3G.  up to 10 days in standby - as if that would ever happen.  Audio playback is up to 50 hours.

However a couple of battery specs are a little better.  Video play back is 13 hours vs 11 hours for the 6 and 6S - but below the 14 hours for the 6+ and 6S+.

And internet use is better as well - with 13 hours on LTE and Wifi vs 12 hours on the 6+ and 6S+ and 10 hours on the 6 and 6S.

One thing also missing is the Barometer that is on all of the 6 iPhones.

The best way to describe the SE is it is like Apple took the 5S - and then randomly picked specs from the 6 and 6S to add to it.  However they did seem to pick more of the 6S specs than the 6 specs.  And clearly picked the most important ones - A9 Processor and 12 MP camera.

Pricing of the SE is $399 for the 16 don’t buy me GB version and $499 for the 64 time to pad Apples margins GB version.

You can pre-order the SE on March 24th and it will be available on March 31st.

Well that is if you live in the Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Gothom, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Singapore, United Kingdom and the Unites States.  With over 110 countries by the end of May.

If you were someone holding out for a new 4 inch iPhone - I think you will be very pleased with the specs of the new SE.    It does look to be a very powerful and fast device for gaming and video - but small and with good battery life.

Next up was Talk about iOS 9.3 - which is what the SE will ship with.

Apple stated that over 80% of iOS devices are now running iOS 9.0 or later - vs just 2% for latest major version of Android.  Both of which were released around the same time in the Fall.  Nice little jab there at Android.

iOS 9.3 is available today.  Should you download it today - I say wait a few days - just because of everyone else downloading it.  Most Likely iOS 9.3 GM will be the most stable - bug free Single dot update ever - thanks to the 7 beta - most likely that is - so that is another reason to wait a week.  Lets make sure it is ok.

That all said - If you have been listening the past 10 or so episodes - we have gone over the new features for iOS 9.3  The biggest ones are:

Night Shift.  This is where at night - the screen shifts to warmer colors to make it easier to go to sleep.

The Notes app where you can now password protect your Notes.  You can also sort notes automatically by either Date Edited or Date Created or Title.  To set that you need to go to the settings app and then notes - actually you need to go there as well to turn on or off password protection.

There are also improvements to the Health App.  With Categories such as Weight, Workouts and Sleep having a new slider menu showing apps you can easily add to your health dashboard.  And it now shows more of your health data from your apple watch.

iOS 9.3 also has updates to the news app.  Quote The articles in For You are now better tailored to your particular interests - we search your emails and snap chats and youporn searches to figure out your fettishes and tailor the news app to meet your needs.  unquote or maybe I paraphrased a bit there.  But the point is they are making the results you see in For You - more for you.

CarPlay gets some new features - with Near by you in the Maps app showing you gas, parking, restaurants and more that close by with just a tap.

And the biggest update for iOS 9.3 at least how it seems from Apple’s perspective is with regards to education use.  With an iPad - there is now Shared iPad for students - where students can log in to any iPad in any classroom and make it their own.

There is a new Classroom App - Quote - Teachers can guide students through a lesson, see their progress and keep them on Track unquote.

Apple School Manager - is a single portal where Admins can do everything from creating Apple ID’s to purchasing apps to prepping devices for MDM.

And the New Apple ID’s are a special kind for Education and created and assigned by the school.   So if you are an Admin at a school - some new tools are coming your way.

    http://www.apple.com/education/preview/

Available of iOS 9.3 is again today - as in NOW.

Last in the event was the iPad update that had also been rumored.

They had some quotes about the iPad Pro.

From John Lasseter - Chief Creative Officer of Pixar -  quote The iPad Pro and the Apple Pencil are the closest we’ve ever been able to get in the digital world to actually drawing on paper unquote.

One accessory they added that Podcasters should be excited about - and Phil Shiller even mentioned podcasters for this - is a new USB Camera Adapter which is powered.  Which means you plug in the Connector to your lightening port - and then there is a USB port and lightening port on it - so you plug in the lightening cord to it - this Powered Lightening to USB camera adaptor then will allow you to plug in mics - like your Yeti mic right into your iPad. Sweet.

As expected They added a new iPad Pro - with the 9.7 Inch version.  It is Less than 1 Pound.

They talked about how there have been over 200 Million iPad’s with 9.7 Inch screens sold to date.  That is over 65% of the iPads sold to date.

Apple said with the new iPad Pro they are going after the PC replacement market and Joked there are over 600 Million PC’s over 5 years old in use - ouch.

There are now over 1 Million Apps designed for the iPad.

Same display technology as with iPad Pro 12.9 inch version.

However they did add a new feature - Introducing - True Tone Display.  It Measures ambient light and adjusts the display based on the surrounding light.

It has the Same 4 speakers as original iPad Pro.

It has the same A9X processor with integrated M9 co-processor.

There is a New Smart Keyboard designed for the 9.7 inch version - no word on if the 12.9 inch smart keyboard would work with it or not.  The 9.7 incher smart keyboard is $20 less at $149 vs the $169 for the 12.9 incher smart keyboard.

And of course it supports the Apple Pencil.

The Cameras on the 9.7 inch iPad Pro are better than the 12.9 Inch version.

There is a 12 MP iSight Camera - does seem Apple got a good deal on those cameras as they are now in the 6S, 6S+, SE and now iPad Pro 9.7 inch.

And you can shoot 4k video with it.  You can shot live Photos.  There is a true Tone Flash.  Panorama Photos up to 63 MPixels.

There is a 5 MP FaceTime Camera - same as the 6S and 6S+.   Essentially the cameras on the iPad Pro are the same as the cameras on the iPhone 6S and 6S+ with the same features and capabilities.

Silver, Gold, Space Gray and Rose Gold.

And finally they added a 256 Gb version at $899.  They also added a 256 GB version for the 12.9 inch iPad Pro as well.

Pricing for the iPad Pro 9.7 incher - starts at $599 for the 32 still too small GB Wifi only version.  And goes up to $1,029 for the 256 now were talking GB - Wifi and Cellular version.

Actually here is how pricing now breaks down.

iPad Mini starts at $269,  iPad Air 2 from $399,  iPad Pro 9.7 incher from $599 and iPad Pro 12.9 Incher - from $799.

And the new 12.9 incher with 256 GB storage and Wifi plus cellular will cost you $1,229 or $1,497 when you add the Apple pencil and SmartKeyboard.

March 31st is the availability the new 9.7 inch iPad Pro.

This was the last Product announcement at that Town hall stage.  The iPod and App store were announced there.

In 2017 a new Campus will be where next town hall event is likely held.

The whole event was just a couple minutes over an hour.  So a shorter event per how these things typically go.

By the way watch OS was updated today and NOTE it requires your iPhone to be on iOS 9.3 - so make sure you update to 9.3 first if you want the latests update to Watch OS

    25:52

So lets go over some of the feedback on the Apple Event.

    From the Email bag -

    Hi Rob,

Today's announcement on all the new goodies from Apple is a sure sign that they are stepping up their game.  I am confident that Apple has reawaken the tablet computer market with the 9.7" pro iPad.

The announcement today along with stats such as 600 Million PCs that are 5 years and older was Apple's way of serving notice that the Windows PC was walking the Green Mile and the iPad Pro 9.7" along with the available keyboard was going to play the part of the warden pulling the switch.

Needless to say, today is one day that I am glad to not be an android fanboy or else I would be feeling pretty but hurt right now!

    Regards,

    Shane

    St. John's, Newfoundland

    Hi Rob,

I see that Apple is now touting offline dictation in IOS 9.3 for A9

equipped devices (6s, 6s plus and iPad Pro). As I had written previously,

this has been around for a while although exactly how long I cannot say. I

stumbled upon it around the beginning of the year. Certainly no earlier than

    IOS 9.

For whatever reason Apple chose to keep it secret until now.

I hope this fixes a bug I have been experiencing where every so often my

iPhone will refuse to take any  dictation at all until I reboot the phone.

    Regards,

    Kevin Barry

    Thanks Kevin and Shane.

    Also from the email bag.

    Hi Rob,

Kind of bummed about today's announcement. My wife and I both need laptop upgrades and I was hoping for some kind of announcement about that. I know it wasn't expected but I was still hopeful. What I really want for the iPhone 7 is something a little thicker with a longer battery life. I'd be more than happy to sacrifice sickness for battery life. My wife has the battery case from Apple and really loves it. But I have a plus and they don't make one for that yet!

    Still bummed about the Flyers,

    Regards,

    Mike in Dayton

Mike - thanks for the email - and yes very sad game again the cuse on Friday.  Just 235 more days until next season - not that I am counting or anything.

From the G+ community with regards to the Apple event.

From Tosin O - quote loving care kit. unquote

    From Myron Uecker

Quote IPhone SE (the 4 inch iPhone) is basically a smaller iPhone 6S. 16 and 64 gig sizes and better prices, starting at $399. unquote

From Francisco Tapia - They also didn't mention 7000 series aluminum, which makes me think it is not

To which Karthik M replied - But its a much thicker phone. So relieved that the Power button went back to the top.  I love this. Pity it only comes in 64GB. Everything else is perfect.

To which I would say - the Power button did not go back - as it is the same external design as the 5S - so it stayed up top where it belongs.  But yes agree - nice to see it up top still.

From Tosin Oladini -  I believe I have found a reason to buy another iPad since my 4th Gen 128gb iPad.

From Tony Law -  Looks like I'll finally be upgrading my iPad Air!

From Caryl Goodman - Me too!!!! I just tried to order it. Available to order on 3-24!!! Guess I'm getting the 256 GB one!!! YES!!!!!!!

From Danielle Saul - And me

Seems quite a few of you are excited about the new iPad Pro specs in the 9.7 Inch package - which when you add in the improved color handling and better cameras - is a much nicer offering than the 12.9 Incher from November.

    From Steven Whatley

So, pre-orders start on March 24th. But, what time? Midnight ET? Midnight PT? 8am ET? 8am PT? Thanks!

Typically pre-orders will start either at 12:01 AM PT or between 4:00 AM PT and 6:00 AM PT.

But I thing Nic Brown’s reply is probably accurate - he said it won’t matter they will have plenty of Stock.

I would agree with that - as I don’t see this being something there is a shortage of - or long lead times.  We could be wrong - but again it is only about 13% of iPhones purchased in 2015 were 4 Inchers.

Are there any fully relational database apps for iOS that stores data locally on the device. or syncs to iCloud? I've looked at a few apps. Most are single table apps (MyStuff2) or requires the data to be on a server (AirTable).

The ability to store media such as photos is a must. Price is not important to a limit f(like not over US$100).

    prod-customers-to-buy-two-iphones/

There is an article in ZDnet titled -

Apple's iPhone SE: Can it prod customers to buy two iPhones?

    Huh???

From the article - quote Apple launched the iPhone SE, which is designed to address a market for 4-inch smartphones, target a lower end market and potentially emerging markets too, but perhaps the biggest win for the company would be to convince its customers to buy two smartphones. unquote.

Wow - that sounds a lot like this quote

    quote

“Once the initial fever wears off, however, the bloom will really be off the rose, and sales will be disappointing (at least here in the U.S.). The iPhone won’t be your only phone, but it could be the coolest one in your menagerie . . . for a while. But that would mean a massive shift in U.S. consumer behavior. If Apple can convince U.S. consumers to adopt multiple phones, the iPhone has a chance of tremendous success. If not, then it’ll be a flash in the pan. It’ll be mildly successful (like Apple’s desktops and notebooks, which have a 5 percent market share), but not at the level of the RAZR or Nokia’s popular phones.”unquote

That was from Jim Louderback, PC Magazine. 6 June 2007

Seems the idea of Apple needing to convince people to buy a second iPhone to be successful has been around well longer than the iPhone.

    http://blog.recovery-ipad.com/10-new-

    functions-comes-with-iphone-7.html

This next post goes under Rumors with a Capital R.  And a few other Capital letters.

The post is titled - 10 new functions come with iPhone 7.

The release date - and they give a meh - Sept 2016 date - really.

For the display - they are saying it will be a Sapphire display - at this point I am thinking BGR or Digitimes is involved.

For hardware they give the meh - A10 processor - duhhh.

The repeat the common refrain of the removal of the 3.5 MM headphone jack.

Per Camera - they say there will be a 16 Mega Pixel rear camera - and 8 Mega Pixel front one.  And that the camera will be thinner so as not to protrude from the back.  Well now that the camera on the iPad Pro 9.7 inch is the same as the iPhone 6S - yeah - they have to improve it.

They talk about the iphone 7 being Waterproof.  I think that is something we came close to with the iPhone 6S and 6S+ = and apple will likely make as such for the next gen - just not convinced - they will actually say it is waterproof.

They also bring up the oft rumored wireless charging - not oft rumored just per the iPhone 7 - but anytime there is a new iPhone.

They also mention an USB-C port - ummm - Again they seem to be channeling BGR and Digitimes here.

And they say it will start at the all too low 16 GB for storage.

    with-lightning-port-leaked-in-china

Either photo shop - and a good job - or a leaked photo was found on a chinese site that is supposed to be a picture of a lightening connector on a set of EarPods - so yes the traditional 3.5 MM jack is replace with the Lightening connector.

Again -- I am guessing on photo shop or at least a knock off or fake.  As the cord is not WHITE - it is grey.  Apple’s cords are always white.

But if you want to see what it Might look like - sans the wrong color - this photo achieves that.

I am still leaning more towards the 3.5 MM jack getting jacked and replaced with a stereo speaker.  And just the lightening port for the headphones.

    Hi Rob,

Per ep 386 and the Person looking for MVNO with WiFi Calling - as you mentioned, all the MVNOs, at this time, do NOT support Wifi calling.

A compromise might be use an MVNO and then use a VoIP app on your iPhone over your WiFi.  It will be slightly less convenient, but there are many apps to choose from.

Some, like Yallo Call Recorder, will allow free incoming calls and let you use your existing phone number so at least for incoming calls, it will be transparent for people trying to call you.

If you use Vonage or other VoIP service already, they have an iPhone app that lets you make and receive calls using your existing Vonage phone number, so that might work also.

Google Hangouts, Skype, and other VoIP-style apps may be a solution but you will probably need to use their phone numbers or play tricks with call forwarding from your existing numbers to get a compromise solution.

There is a downside to Wifi calling (built-in to iPhone and using the carrier).  When WiFi calling is enabled, handoff is disabled so if you like having text and phone calls coming thru to your Mac, iPad, etc. simultaneously, you lose that if you turn on WiFi calling.

I started out on T-Mobile when they were one of the first to have Wifi calling.  Unfortunately, the terrible cell coverage in my home town was just too painful so I switched to Cricket a MVNO for ATT and the coverage has been excellent.  Features are reasonable and price is lower than ATT itself.

Maybe with the iPhone 7 and the increased bands I will re-visit my choice of carriers, but Cricket recently added free voice and data international coverage to some countries (like T-Mobile), so I am pretty happy with them.

    Regards,

    Robert S

    Hi Rob.

Here’s a tip for your listeners.

Many commercial institutions send us text messages using a 5- or 6-digit identifier instead of a phone number.  For example, my Walmart Pharmacy uses 632-57 and Amazon uses 292-966.  It would be more meaningful to see the name “Amazon” on the text message than “292-966,” so here’s how to fix that.

Simply create (or add to) a Contact entry for the company using the short code as a phone number.  So, for example, create an entry for Amazon in your Contacts using a phone number of 292-966.  I use the qualifier “other” to identify such numbers.  Once you do this, all text messages from that company will be identified with the company name, not the number.  You can create a Contact entry directly from your Message app by selecting Details at the top right of the message, then clicking the circled “I” in the upper right, followed by Create New Contact or Add to Existing Contact.

Here is some feedback on iOS 9.3 updates.

    From G+ community.

Myron Uecker said - iOS 9.3 is available now. You all know Rob's precautions about being the first to jump on the bandwagon, though. It should be pretty stable after 7 beta cycles but even for me on Public Beta there is a 1.5 GB download so there must be more changes.

From Karthik M - Its only 300 MB for OTA on my iPhone 6

From John LaFazia - I'm on the beta too and it's also 1.5 GB. My wife's was at 300 MB and she wasn't on the beta

Ange Lowe said - I've done my iPad mini....267mbs. Not done my iPhone yet, but a friend has done his and it was 300mbs.

From Timmy T - Beta users have to download pretty much s clean package

From Myron again - Installed 9.3 on both my iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6S. No issues to report. It just took a while to complete.

From Blair Jones -  I do my update in reverse order of importance, just in case there are problems.

I do the phone last -- do it after sync/backup (I do it to PC not cloud) when I could make a dash to the Genius Bar if necessary). There's no rush.

From Craig B - I just updated my iPhone 6; no problems. About to update my iPad Mini and my MacBook Air. Didn't bother to backup because I'm in a hotel 1000 miles from my main MacBook Pro.

Ouch - Craig - you are a brave man to do an update when you don’t have your computer with you and you are on the road - folks - don’t try this at home.  well Actually only try this at home - don’t try this on the road.  Always best to wait until you are home and not traveling and have time to fix things if stuff breaks - I will do my major updates on Friday. So I have the weekend to fix anything if needed.

    https://marcan.st/2016/03/untangling-ios-pin-code-security/

If you ever wanted to really dig deep into the whole technical side of the Apple v FBI Kerfuffle - there is a really good - and by good I mean long and technical article titled - Untangling iOS PIN code security - it is at marcan.st - link in the show notes of course.

    It goes over

How does iOS PIN security work

    What does the FBI want

    How does firmware signing work

How much effort would it take for Apple to comply

Does this undermine the security for all iPhones

Has Apple done this in the past

What can the FBI do to avoid relying on Apple’s help

    And more.

Again look for Untangling iOS PIN code security in the show notes for ep 387

I am not going to go into the details for this - because…..

    43:26

    http://money.cnn.com/2016/03/21/technology/

    doj-apple-hearing/index.html

The FBI basically just said - ummm never mind.

Seems the DOJ made a request to postpone their courtroom showdown on Tuesday.  They made this request after saying it may have found an alternative way into the iPhone.  Saying they may no longer need assistance from Apple.

From the DOJ - quote On Sunday, March 20, 2016, an outside party demonstrated to the FBI a possible method for unlocking Farook's iPhone...If the method is viable, it should eliminate the need for the assistance from Apple Inc, unquote

Or  as I said to start - ummm - never mind

So the question is now that they may have found a way in - how much harder do you think Apple is going to be working on making the next version of the iPhone even more secure.

Not quite understanding how to password protect my notes. Anyone else having luck?

    unquote

First - you want to go to settings - notes - and then password - and set up your password and turn on Touch ID.

Then go to the notes app itself.

Next - you need to know this is for the notes that are on your iOS device.  If you go back to the folders of your notes - you may see some notes for an account you have and then others that say on my iPhone or on my iPad - the ones one on your iOS device are the ones you can lock - just like they are the ones you can draw pictures in - but the others you can not.

So ok - assuming you are now in the notes that are on my iPhone or iPad -  go to one of the notes - and tap on the upper right corner - where you have the box with the arrow coming out - the pop up box will give you some options - print - copy - lock - more -

obviously tap on lock - and you can set the password you just set up a few minutes ago in settings.

Then you can use the password or touch ID to unlock it.

    http://www.macrumors.com/2016/03/14/apple-

    seeds-ios-9-3-beta-7/

There is something until this episode I have never said - and that is Beta 7 - but now with iOS 9.3 beta 7 - never is no more.  For the first time Apple has put out a 7th beta of an iOS version. This is not to say a 7th version in the past was not warranted - hello iOS 7.  But this time Apple did do the deed - and much to my surprise and others following Apple we are able to say iOS 9.3 Beta 7 is now available to devs and Public Beta Testers.

What is more - for me iOS 9.3 has been very stable for pretty much all of the betas.  It is encouraging to see Apple going out and releasing another beta - which from what I can read is about just squashing the bugs man and I am sure some performance enhancements.

I have installed 9.3 Beta 7 on my iPhone and iPad Pro - and a couple of other devices.  So far so good.

At this point with the next Apple event on March 21st - it is highly highly unlikely we will see any more beta releases - as 9.3 will likely be announced as gold master for everyone to download some time next week.  It is most likely - Apple will make it available for download on Wednesday the 23rd.

As always - why not wait a week or so to upgrade until we really see if there are any bugs intro’d.  I will talk about that more on the next episode.

    04:46

    http://www.apple.com/apple-events/march-2016/

Speaking of the Apple event on the 21st - it will be live streamed starting at 10:00 AM PT.  To watch the event - from an Apple device that has internet capability go to apple.com/live - that simple - apple.com/live.

You can also watch from an Apple TV.

Actually according to apple the requirements to watch the live event are quote

Live streaming uses Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology. HLS requires an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with Safari on iOS 7.0 or later, a Mac with Safari 6.0.5 or later on OS X v10.8.5 or later, or a PC with Microsoft Edge on Windows 10. Streaming via Apple TV requires an Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation) with software 6.2 or later or an Apple TV (4th generation).

    unquote

The next episode will be out the night of the 21st most likely - I will do my best - it just depends on when the recording of the event is made available - as I like to go back through that and do the notes from it.

If not the evening of the 21st - then it will be the evening of the 22nd.

Either way if you want to watch it live - remember it is apple.com slash live - Monday the 21st of March at 10:00 AM PT.

    Hi Rob,

I totally support Apple's position against FBI claims, but Obama's got a point: The industry should come up with a solution before the Senate imposes an inappropriate one.

Fortunately there is a good suggestion from security expert Steve Gibson that Apple might consider to apply on future devices (I'm not sure if this can be applied on existing ones), that imposes a reasonable burden on Apple without compromising anyone's privacy:

Without weakening their devices’ encryption, Apple could arrange to be able to respond to court orders in the United States. If Apple wished to be able to respond to lawful search warrants to unlock their devices, they could embed a single, randomly derived, high-entropy (256-bit) unique per-device key in the hardware secure enclave of every device. This key would not be derived from any formula or algorithm, so there would be no master secret that might somehow escape or become known to a malicious agency. It would be truly random and far too lengthy for any possible brute force guessing attack to be feasible. Upon embedding each individual random per-device key, Apple would securely store a copy of that key in their own master key vault. In this way, without sacrificing anyone’s security, only Apple, on a device by device basis, could unlock any one of their own devices.  unquote

WHY does apple need to do that?

Do safe manufacturers have to do this?  No.  You can buy a safe that if it is tampered with will destroy all the contents in that safe.  The safe manufacturers don’t have to have some master key that opens all safes or individual keys for each safe that works just on that safe - which is what Steve is suggesting.  And what if someone broke into Apple and stole all those master keys?  or even some of them?  What then?

The most secure environment that guarantees privacy protections is one where Apple does not have the key - and that is Apples main argument.

No lets talk logistics - where are these 256 bit unique per device keys going to be generated?  In China where they phones are manufactured - hmmm - can’t imagine the Chinese government would not want to get a hold of them.  Are these keys going to be stored digitally - if so - then if you can steal one you can steal and duplicate them all.  If they are not digital keys - but rather physically printed out?   Hmmmm - where do you store and how do you transport securely 80 to 100 Million of said keys in a busy quarter.  I don’t see how this secure key idea holds any water logistically.

This next one is an article titled quote FBI could demand Apple source code and keys if iPhone backdoor too burdensome unquote

This the justice department implied in its latest filing against the Tech giant.

Federal Prosecutors in their March 10th filling said quote

The government did not seek to compel Apple to turn those over because it believed such a request would be less palatable to Apple, If Apple would prefer that course, however, that may provide an alternative that requires less labor by Apple programmers.”

    unquote

And if that seems like a threat to Apple - Yes - Yes it is.  And not an ideal one - as the Justice depart has set this precedent in a 2013 case against Lavabit - an encrypted email provider supposedly used by Edward Snowden.

The founder of Lavabit Mr Ladar Levinson said quote "I think [the government] is setting up the possibility of demanding the key and the source code,” unquote

The article goes on to say if the Government was to get the source code they could create their own ghost version of iOS that could imitate the legitimate Apple Updates.

If this sounds far fethched - that is something that the Government already did with the Lavabit email service.

    From the article quote

Levison said the feds demanded his source code and private key in order to build a "ghost" Lavabit, allowing the government to "pretend to be Lavabit on the internet" all while intercepting, decrypting, and inspecting data between Lavabit's servers and the outside world.

    why-you-ll-wear-an-apple-watch-to-keep-your-job.html

Ok - so we are talking privacy - privacy - privacy - and then Johnny Evans at Computer world has an article titled - Why You’ll wear an Apple Watch to keep your job -

Essentially the gist of the article is you will need to wear your apple watch to monitor your health.  This because of some Patent filings.  Seems Apple describes a way n which an Apple Watch can constantly monitor a wearer’s heartbeat - alerting them of a heart attack before it happens.

But it could also monitor for other items like accidents, falls, being attacked.  Plus more via he built in accelerometer, heart monitor, microphone and other sensors.  Help I fallen and I can’t get up.  Would be replaced with Siri - saying - I think you have fallen and can’t get up - an ambulance has been dispatched and is on its way - in the mean time - I will play a song from your music playlist.  Would you like Stayin Alive from the  Beegees?

If you would not like music - I could dictate your last will and testament - you know just incase the ambulance gets caught in traffic.

ok - maybe not so much that last part - but essentially - what it is saying is that these technologies can be used to combine sensors to see how you are doing - and thus it may be something that health insurance companies want you to wear all the time.

Now the article is just pointing out some Analists are predicting millions of Workers will soon be required to use these types of monitoring tech to keep their jobs.

So on one side you have people predicting these health monitoring watching and sensing everything you do - all the time will be required for lower premiums for insurance and hence for you to keep your job.   And the other side we have is the government that wants the back door to everything.

Yeah - if George Orwell’s 1984 just popped into your head you are not alone.

The only way that the monitoring works is if it is completely secure and encoded.

Be afraid - be very very afraid.

    Hi Rob,

It is only on the rare occasion that I'm compelled to contact you directly. I'm the person that originally shared "Bumpies" with you. I hope you're still enjoying those.

Anyway, I was struck by your recent episode, "Apple Vs. the FBI." I am a high school English teacher in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and, as it so often does, life has once again imitated art. I am in the throws of teaching George Orwell's classic 1984 to high school sophomores, and this issue of the back door the FBI is  instructing Apple to build is a powerful way of making applicable and meaningful, to my digital natives, words on a page, which to them are usually just words on a page.

I am finding more and more that younger generations are so immersed in technology that they become desensitized to the value of privacy as a general human right. There is an overwhelming feeling among my students, that frightens me, of "I have nothing to hide, so I don't care if they look." I think this misses the most critical point. Demanding privacy isn't an admission that you have something to hide. There's a reason we don't live in glass houses. It doesn't mean we're criminals. Privacy should be a non-negotiable aspect of living in what we like to think of as a democracy.

Anyway, this Apple issue has really inspired thoughtful analysis and discussion of what we should be asked to sacrifice in exchange for security, and whether the security we get is real or simply "security theater." The prevailing thought seems to be, "Security of privacy? This is America. Shouldn't be have both?" From the mouths of 10th graders, right?

Your episode was thoughtful and expertly put together. I haven't missed an episode of Tii in years, and that was by far your best, most topical, most poignant. I plan to play snippets for my students.

Thanks again for all your hard work.

    Best,

    Eric in Philadelphia

    Hi Rob,

Episode 383 was excellent! You did a fantastic job of recapping the essential information that people need to know so they can form opinions based on understanding and knowledge.

    YOU ROCKED IT!

    Honestly, I expected nothing less.

Thanks again for all you do.

Folks if you have not listened to Ep 383 - please do so - I think that gives you a really good understanding of this issue from both sides.

    life-saved-by-Apple-Watch.html

And that whole Apple patent filing and warning of a heart attack rolls right into this next story from The Sun in the Uk.  Titled - Builder who suffered heart attack at work - had life saved by Apple watch

Seems a Mr Dennis Anselmo was not feeling well and glanced down at his apple watch and saw his heart rate was more than 210 beats a minute.

He called an ambulance which when it arrived the Paramedics or Doctor confirmed he was having a heart attack and he was taken to the hospital. Doctors at the hospital then discovered artery blockage and cleared said blockage.

The Doctors told him if he had gone home and went to sleep he would likely have had another heart attack in his sleep and died that night.

So yes - the day is saved thanks to the Apple watch.

I could talk about the convenience of ordering online and no longer needing to ask someone to unlock a display case or the great price - or how great the after shave lotion feels and smells.

But rather I want to talk about the most important thing - the Blades.

The blades are incredible - there are 5 of them - not 3 or 4 - but 5.  No cuts no burn - and the best shave I have ever had at any price.  That said the prices are really low.

Harry’s great shave at a great price was not about luck either. Harry's went and found a German blade factory that was almost 100 years old and purchased it.  Harry’s owns the most important part of the razor - the blade and by cutting out the middle men on both sides means they can keep the price low to you.

I have an iPhone 6, never had a problem with it and it hasn't been dropped. for the past 6 weeks it has started going into a coma! By that I mean its still on, but it won't wake up when I press on the buttons. How I know its still on, is that my car kit still shows it as being connected, but when I dial (using voice command VIA my car kit), it says "Call Dial Failed".

The only way I can bring it back to life is to do a hard reset (Holding power button and back button until the phone resets itself.

I have made a point of force quitting Apps that I'm not using in case one of them is causing this, but it hasn't helped.

Does anyone have any suggestions? or will I have to get it back to Apple? I live in Ireland, and we don't have an Apple Store here, so I can't make an appointment to get them to look at it.

As with most people, the thought of sending it away for a week or two, is not something that I want to do.

If anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear them.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Thanks for getting back to me Gary, to answer your questions, Yes I do have the latest version of iOS. As for the latest version for my car kit, I don't know about that. But, the issue is not confined to when I am in the car. The phone has gone into this coma maybe once every two or three days, it is unconnected to the car kit, as mostly I just take the phone out of my pocket and it is unresponsive. It has only happened once in that time while I was in the car.

I have reset network settings with no result. I haven't as yet wiped the phone and re-set it up. Do you think that may be the answer?

Thanks again guys for your advice on this. I reset my iPhone, then set it up as a new iPhone. Once I had done that I connected it to my MacBook and did a restore from a backup... Hopefully this will resolve my issue. I now have to wait until either my problem occurs again, or does not. I was happening about once every two or three days, so time will tell.

I will come back either way and let you know.

And Rick - thanks for that - and on my iPhone 6+ and iPad it looks great - and not showing the white frame - well not on the iPhone - but on the iPad - I just tap on the video and they are gone.   But then I received this email - which answer the question here:

    Hey Rob,

The reason you're not seeing the video podcasts issue reported by John is that you're running 9.3 beta 6 and can thus go full-screen. Somewhere I read that beta 6 finally fixed the non-full-screen video podcasts issue. If you have another device running iOS 9.2.1 or a beta of 9.3 before beta 6, you should be able to see what he's talking about. But to make it easy for you, here's a screen capture from my iPad Air 2 running 9.2.1 that shows what he's talking about:

Black letterbars to the left and right of the podcast image, white space on the top and bottom of the screen containing the titles above and the podcast controls below.  Now here it is on my iPad Mini 2 running 9.3 public beta 7:

Looks the same, right?  But do you notice the small, inverted black circle with the double-headed arrow in the upper right corner of that 2nd picture, just below the battery percentage? If you tap that, then the podcast goes full-screen:

Gone are the white space hogs above and below, and no wasteful letterbars on the left and right. Just the letterbars top and bottom to scale the video to proper dimensions, but the video content itself utilizes much much more of the screen. This was the way video podcasts could be watched in previous versions of the Podcast app, but the full screen maximization arrows are missing in some versions of iOS 9, including 9.2.1. Let's hope they stick around in the final release of 9.3.

    Regards

    Damon in Tuscaloosa, AL

Thanks Damon for the help on that - and I can confirm in iOS 9.3 beta 7 - they are still gone and fixed - so it looks like the issue originally reported on this - will be taken care of officially next week when iOS 9.3 Gold Master is released.

One of the things Apple is looking at doing is getting rid of DFU mode.  Doing this - would also make it much more difficult to jailbreak.

Additionally Apple wants to encrypt iPhone backups on iCloud

Well they kinda encrypt the  data on their servers now - but since they have the encryption key for those backups - it is not truly encrypted like Apple wants - they want it where even Apple does not have a key because there is no key.

Apple just announced they are opening up their new service to anyone creating news content - not just the big boys - but anyone - with a blog that wants in can get in essentially.

Or put another way Anyone who publishes content online will be able to distribute their content to Apple users via the company Apple News Format.  This does require getting the editing tools from Apple to publish on Apple News.

Soon Apple will also be adding in a stats dashboard so you know you can see how your articles are doing.

It looks like everything from Blog posts to Video posts can be added by publishers.  And again Publishers is no longer just the big boys - it is anyone with a blog.

There are some supposed leaked photos of an iPhone 5SE or what ever the next gen 4 incher will be called.

And as expected it is showing the device as basically the same size as the 5S - but with more rounded corners and edges - like the 6 / 6S line.

It is not known if the pictures are the real deal or just a knock off Android phone - there are many in China that look like iPhones.

And these pictures are coming out of China.

One thing to note in the pictures - there is from an Apple perspective much to big a gap around the power button.  And the people that had the device were not allowed to turn it on.

Also the buttons on the side did not look the same color as the case - which is not how iPhones are built.

So most likely it is a knock off.  But still it likely will look pretty close to the next Gen 4 incher.

Sum rumors say it will be just for the iPhone 7+ - others say for both the 7+ and the 7.

Driving the latest rumor is a supposed picture of the dual camera module that is supposed to be from the next Gen iPhone.

I guess the second Camera on the back is to make up for the removal of the head phone jack.

    http://www.macrumors.com/2016/03/15/iphone-

    7-plus-photo-dual-lens-smart-connector/

And right on the heels of the dual camera module - comes pictures of the supposed back side of the iPhone 7+

The photo is a little grainy - but there are some good looking mockups in the article at MacRumors.

Essentially the camera - rather than being one circle - it now looks more like a pill - with the camera on the iPhone 7 protruding out a little more than it does on the iPhone 6S.

It is believe the over look and feel of the iPhone 7+ is not much different from the iPhone 6+ / 6S+

This mock up also shows it with out the HeadPhone jack.

And some other mock ups showed it with dual speakers.

So all you have to do to enjoy your music truly in stereo is place the bottom of the iPhone the bridge of your nose.

Two episodes ago I mentioned that Amazon had removed encryption from their fire lines - ummm - bad choice - as they already have back tracked and have added it back.

So users of Fire OS devices will once again be able to fully encrypt the content on said devices.

As we mentioned previously Amazon initially told reporters that it had removed the feature because of  lack of interest from users. Well except for all those that scream bloody murder once they became away their devices would not get their data encrypted.

    Hi Rob,

While I'm certainly sympathetic to those affected or could possibly be affected by the San Bernardino case. I'm not willing to risk everyone else's iPhones all over the world to hackers. And don't think for a minute the FBI can keep this to themselves especially when the US Government uses contractors.

    Hi Rob,

I have enjoyed your podcast for several years. I am legally blind and appreciate your keeping those of us with vision loss informed.

But, I am writing today in response to your last podcast where you reviewed the issue between Apple and the FBI.   You seemed to infer/imply that if Justice Scalia were alive and on the Court that the Feds would win. You said the Court is now split 4 to 4 and that if Scalia were present he would probably side with the Court Libs. I don't think so; as many with a conservative view of the Constitution would favor Apple's position.  For example; I have attached a transcript of Rush Limbaugh's second hour yesterday.  If you take the time to read his comments; you will understand where many on the Right come down on this issue. This truly is a defining point for our country.

    Respectively,

    Bob Purvis

    Sitka, Alaska

Hi, Rob. Well, to be honest with you, I feel terribly worried about now. I mean, I am seriously scared for my future, the futures of those I care about, and the future of this entire country, as well as Apple's. If Apple is forced to bend to the FBI, it could practically spell the end of life as we know it. We'll all be heading for a hopelessly dystopian society before long, if Apple is legally required to do what the FBI wants them to do. I can hardly stand to imagine it. If Apple has no choice but to meet the FBI's demands, corrupt government officials would have, at their disposal, a tool that would allow them to hack into innocent peoples iPhones, tamper with their personal data, and have them wrongly accused of crimes. Or, even worse, good people's personal data could be stolen and given to criminals or oppressive foreign governments, data that could be used to perpetrate more acts of terrorism in this country. Seriously! If Apple were forced, by law, to create a tool that the FBI could use, at its own disgression, to hack into citizens' iPhones, we're all doomed, hopelessly and irreversibly doomed! Here's hoping and praying that the world will not end. If this goes to the Supreme Court, here's hoping that the FBI will lose this fight. As a final thought, may those pushing Apple to breech its own security to allow our civil liberties to be violated come to understand the grave mistake they have made, the hard way.

    REgards,

    Shandy W

The majority of car mounts are made from cheap plastic and they can barely hold your phone. While you might be able to get your phone in the right position, you then have to fiddle with numerous apps just so you can change your music, make a call or get directions.

Hi Rob, it's Brian here again, from Galway in Ireland.

I have a question that you or your listeners may be able to help with. On your advice I regularly reset my network settings on my iPhone 6, most commonly when there is an iOS update, and more occasionally for other reasons. The problem with doing this is that I lose access to the various wifi networks that I use, until I can get the login details again. These networks are most commonly at restaurants, cafe's, friends houses etc.

When the network settings go astray, it's not because the usernames and passwords are incorrect, so is there an app that can store these automatically. i.e. When you put the details into the login screen of any network, that the app would save the details, to be used later, after resetting my network settings. Possibly this "magical" app could even have a feature to restore the details directly into the phones network database.

I still love your podcast, I learn from every one, as do many other people around the world. Long may you continue. Your mix of factual information, not so factual information, insights and opinions, mixed with your sense of humor make every episode a pleasure to listen to.

    Regards,

    Brian Mitchell.

    VOICEMAIL -

Help!  Hello Rob, I’m with the devil AT&T since september 93, anyhow as you know starting this month they are charging $5 more a month for data despite my contract!  Also to make matters worse no more subsides which is the only reason I’ve stayed to save hundreds on the hardware purchase.

    My contract is up 9/12/16

My ETF is only about $85

I got for complaining to the cancelation dept a $100 credit for the upcoming bill.

So in about a month or 2 before I get a full bill 82.98 with tons of taxes and fees I know I should switch!

I think the best would be a MVNO company that is att or Tmobile based on my area of thousand oaks and that they support wifi calling since at my home coverage is a bit weak but I also have a home digital phone.

    http://www.cellularbackdoor.com/alternative_networks.shtml

Which company do I go with?  Straight talk or another one?  Does it have to have the Gsm next to the company name and what is Gsm-a and GSM-T?  I have iPhone 6s plus and when the next iPhone comes out I would go with the 4.7" iPhone 7 or whatever they call it.

I use not too many minutes and about 3GB data.

Which companies can I use that are cheapest/best & gsm?

    Regards,

    Michael

    announces-march-21-event

I had started writing last night - looks like the rumors about a march event were not true - and then this morning bam - out goes the Invites on a Thursday no less.

The Apple Event will be on Monday March 21st at 10:00 AM PT and the invite had the tag line - Let us loop you in -   And well instantly that draws us back to one of the key rumors being - that it will NOT be a new Apple watch announced but rather new wrist straps - so that rumor just went way up in value.

The colors in the image are the four primary colors of the iPhone line - White, Space Grey, Gold and Rose Gold - that adds to the rumor of a new iPhone 5SE with the same colors as the current iPhones.

Other items possible at the event include an updated 9.7 Inch iPad with smart keyboard and Apple Pencil support.  And some think there might be Mac updates as well.

To go over this in a little more detail.  The most likely item to be announced is the iPhone 5SE  or iPhone mini which is the 4 incher.  Expect it to be kind of like the iPhone 5S and 6S had a little something going on and they had a baby.  It is expected to have the A9 processor, an 8 Mega Pixel camera although a 12 Mega Pixel camera was also recently rumored.  It will have touch ID of course and NFC.  But it is NOT repeat NOT expected to have 3D touch.  And the rumors were saying it would have all 4 current colors available - lining up with the image sent out.  Some rumors had said it will however only come in two memory options - 16 don’t buy me GB and 64 that is more like it GB’s.

The next item likely to be announced is update Apple Watch Bands - and there was a collective Yawn heard through out the land.  Some rumors say new colors - others say new materials - and others say new bands made with luxury brands Partners.

Most likely the next Apple Watch update will be in the Sept / Oct time frame to better line up with the holiday season.  Oh an since we are mentioning it - the latest rumor is when said Apple Watch 2 is released it will include a camera for face timing.  Thus completing the fulfillment of Chester Goulds vision.

Next on the list of Possible announced products would be the update 9.7 Inch iPad - making it essentially a 9.7 inch iPad Pro - with its own smart keyboard and of course support for the Apple Pencil - and the same A9X processor and 4G of Ram - Plus it would also have 4 speakers.  The rumor mill is not hover settled on will it be called an iPad Pro mini  or an iPad Air 3 - It seems making it a 9.7 inch version of the iPad Pro - the iPad Air brand would not seem to fit - but how do you fit is in with the Pro line.  Maybe call it the iPad Pro Air or iPad Air Pro or as I said iPad Pro mini - or is this is a wild thought - why not - just the iPad.  Then you would have it where the

    iPad mini is 7.9 Inches

and the iPad is 9.7 inches

and finally the iPad Pro is 12.9 inches

Something still does not seem right there.

Also expected at the event are announcements about updates to iOS and Watch OS and TV OS

I would also expect some part of the announcement to talk about the Educational features new to iOS 9.3 and some partnerships on that front.

Finally I would expect some mention of the Apple v. FBI issue.

Some are saying now Mac announcements - but I think a Mac announcement along with info about the upcoming WWDC event are also both possibilities.

We have one more episode before the 3/21 date - so on that one I will mention any other rumors.  But think about this it will have been over 6 months since the last Apple event.  Yes 6 months already since the September event.

iOS 9.3 Beta 6 was released this week - which as near as I can tell was just about squashing bugs man.

Oh and a little bit of better battery life according to a few - I have not noticed much of a difference - maybe a little better.

And the last time there was a beta 6 and maybe the only other time was with iOS 7.0  - maybe one other time - but I could not find it in my past notes.

    http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/10/should-

So let me tell you about a story.

See there was this guy by the name of Caleb - and Caleb sent Tim cook an email and it said - quote

    Hey Tim,

Do you quit your iOS multitasking apps frequently and is this necessary for Battery life? Just wanting you to put this controversy to rest!

    Caleb

PS - I’m Rooting for Apple in the FBI Case

    unquote

Then Caleb got a reply - and the reply said

    Quote

    Hi Caleb

I know you asked tim but I’ll at least offer my input

    No and No

Thanks for being an Apple customer

    Craig

    unquote

And that was Craig Awesome Hair Federighi

    I call BS - Kinda.

In theory - Sure No and No - but if you have an app like the old version of Facebook - that sucked down your battery like a 5 year old sucking down a juice box.

And other apps also go rogue from time to time.

So sure in Theory NO and NO - but in reality - yes normal folks with lots of apps will have to close out apps - especially if they see battery life not what it normally is.

The other day it was around 3 PM and my battery life was around 35% - It was a normal day and that is almost never at that low a level.  So I forced quit all my open apps  and I had bunch.  And then the day after at night also a normal day I was around 70%.  Which was a little better than normal.  So one of my apps was not behaving well the day it was drained down.

I could just imagine Craig in Tim’s office when that came in and said - Tim please please - let me take this one.  SUCK IN - ok -  No and No - and THEN Giggles.

Again I call BS - Kinda

    http://www.dailystar.co.uk/tech/news/499326/iPhone-glitch-

    unlocks-your-smartphone-without-password-everyone-fooled

Ok - so there was this report flying around about a glitch where you can by pass a locked iPhone - except it was not true or at least I don’t know anyone that it works for.

It goes like this - with a locked iPhone - you ask Siri what time it is - then click on the clock - then go to timer and then tap on “When Timer Ends” and then scroll up to and tap on Buy More Tones - and it is supposed to magically unlock.

I tried it on quite a few devices running different version of iOS and it did not work for any of them - I have only seen people say it did not work for them - the only one it seems to have worked for is the guy in the youtube video - which I am guessing was a faked video.

But funny how many are willing to say it is real and tweet or re-tweet about it with out you know even checking if it is real - which it is not.

    12:01

    http://www.wearobo.com/2016/03/john-mcafee-says-he-

    lied-about-iphone.html

In Ep 383 in my Apple v. FBI major segment - I had this one blurb

    quote

Robert X Cringely at cringely.com titled - The FBI v Apple isn’t all the way you think it is.

In his article - he talks about a few key points.  First Why does the Government need Apple to create this tool? - John McAfee has publicly stated he could do this in less than a month.  And yes McAfee is a whack job personally - but as Cringely states technically McAfee is one of the smartest people in the world and if he says he can do it - it should make you take pause about this whole issue.

    unquote

To make one thing clear - my comment was Yes McAfee is a whack Job personally - and Cringely’s comments were the parts about McAfee one of the smartest people in the world and if he says he can do it it should make you take pause.  Just want to clarify I was not saying or not saying McAfee could or could not do it - just that he is a whack job.

And I was proven correct - as McAfee - just admitted he lied when he said he could do it - and just said that to make a point.

    Hi Rob:

I highly recommend PDFPen, or PDFPenPro.

    https://smilesoftware.com/pdfpen.

This man can either scan in a paper document directly into PDFPen. PDFPenPro is a a bit pricy, but it gives you the ability to do everything you could possibly need. Their customer service is also top notch.

If you have an electronic copy as a PDF just Open it directly into PDFPen.

    Love the show.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from Paul Keith Kelly who posted the following

    Quote

Buyer Beware - So I just broke the screen on my phone. Not to worry I have SquareTrade on it right. I have been using SquareTrade for years first one was 1/2011. Love them, until today. Seems the coverage I have on my iPhone 6 Plus does not cover accidental damage. Why else would you buy a warranty? I have 4 items covered or so I thought by SquareTrade. I am not a happy customer today. I will be looking for a new phone and a new company to cover it. Yes I know I should have read the fine print, that is why I am warning all of you.

So what's the next best option as far as phone coverage for my next iPhone?

    Unquote

    Some of the replies were

    From Myron Uecker

    quote

I haven't had an iPhone repaired recently but I had SquareTrade reimburse me for fixing a couple of iPads when we broke the screen. One was the second time the same device was broken. I couldn't imagine them not covering accidental damage.

    From Francisco Tapia

    quote

Is it possible you have a warranty protection that does not include ADH?

    unquote

    From Paul Keith Kelly

    Quote

As Francisco Tapia says I do not have ADH. I did not know they offered two types of plans these days. That is why I made the post to let people know. I guess in my anger it did not come out that clear. Thanks again.

Francisco Tapia Thanks you are absolutely correct. I have 3 plans with ADH and 2 without. I have been using them so long and just trusted I was getting the same thing. My mistake (still not that happy about it). Thanks for your post.

    unquote

    And finally from Caryl Goodman

    quote

    What does ADH stand for???

    unquote

Well Caryl - ADH = Accidental Damage Handling

You drop it - you spill water on it - it falls in the pool / bath tub / toilet - that is where you want ADH coverage

And if you are wondering at this point why you would want anything other than ADH - BING BING BING - EXACTLY why Paul Keith Kelly put up the post in the Google+ community and why that post made it over to the show notes.

Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts and comments in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Folks Go to today in iOS dot com slash community to join in.

And thanks to all 3,000+ of you already in the community and contributing.

Also from the Google Plus community was this comment per the last episode - which I always pin the last episode at the top.

    From Francisco Tapia

TLDR; you can only share explicitly

    * Music

    * Movies

    * TV shows

    * Books

    * Apps

    * Apple Music via Family Membership.

If said in-app purchase was made by family member A, they can restore the purchase anytime by logging into their AppleID on their Apple Device. However, family member B would not be able to restore family member A's In-App purchases.

Regarding the listener who asked about Apple Music and still being able to move his music to his device. iTunes Match still exists and does what it did before Apple Music. With iTunes Match, you can add anything to your iTunes Library on your computer and it will appear in your iCloud library. Unfortunately it is still an additional fee, but $25/year isn't expensive.

I mentioned on the last episode there was an update coming for the Tii App - and that update came - and here is some feedback for this version of the App - 2.1.1

    Hello,

I just downloaded the App from the IOS App Store and checked out the VoiceOver Accessibility that the team worked on. It is very impressive that VoiceOver is mentioned in the What’s New section for the app in the store listing.

I downloaded the App and I will send a link to a video I will create showing how a blind person actually will use the app  with the new accessible features the dev team worked on.

Thank you and Libsyn for taking on such an effort of enclusion for all. The worlds largest podcast hosting company is setting the bar high for everybody.

Thanks for working on the accessibility and thank the dev team for making a difference.

    Respectfully,

    Jeff T

    Hi Rob.

Love you've done with the place.. I mean app.. Kinda makes it easier to find things now.. Just been flipping they the artwork and I feel inspired to send you some artwork for the show. Will see what I come up with.

Love the show.. Keep it up.

    Tosin O

Thanks all for the feedback - And one of the big new features is a category list.

If you go to the episode list and tap the upper left to get the menu - and then click on Categories - then select one - like Unboxing - you will see all the unboxing videos.  Podcasts will get you just podcasts and there are others - like breaking news - which is mostly blog posts.

I need to better use that offering and will look at changing some of them around.

The App is now optimized for the 6 and 6+ sizes.

Multitasking support was added for iPads - Thanks guys.

The episode info loading is greatly improved.

And as mentioned - VoiceOver Accessibility improvements.  I really want to say Kudos to Michael our lead dev - as he does really care about the VoiceOver features and understands for an audio app like Tii and WTF and other Podcasters - that Voiceover features are not optional but required.  That all said - if we missed anything - let us know.

today in iOS At gmail dot com.

And once again - just search for Tii in the App store to get the Free Tii App and make sure you turn on Notifications - like 17,690 others have already done.

One more piece of feedback on the Tii App

    Hi Rob,

I see the Tii app update is out. Do you plan to release the Tii app in the Google Play store also?

    Steven W

You know I have thought about it - but probably not. Seems some Android fan boys don’t like this show for some reason - and left negative reviews in iTunes - so need to waive the red flag over there.  Seems some Android Fan boyz have thin skin.  Which if that is anyone listening - Android Fan boy with Thin skin - yeah this is not the show for you.  Just Sayin.

    discovered-affects-hundreds-of-

    thousands-of-devices-apps-hacking-2016-2

And that segways us into this - and Thanks to all that sent in this next one - and it is a post titled quote A huge 7-year old bug has been found that affects hundreds of thousands of apps and devices unquote

And this is of course an Android Bug - it affects glibc a library of open-source code - which hackers could use the exploit crash or take control of services that make use of glibc.  I am not going to get all teachie - because I really am not overly interested - I mean other than from a Schadenfreude perspective.

But good news if you have an android device - there is a good chance well at least a chance the next one you get a year or so from now will not be affected.  Everyone else - not so good for you - and as always the best way to protect yourself from Bugs and malware on An android device is simply to get an iOS device to replace it.  Just sayin.

Thanks to John DF from Perth Australia for this next one.

And it is a post titled - Malware Hijacks Big Four Australian Banks Apps - steals two-factor SMS codes

And they seemed to have left - Dohhhh  - out of the title.

According to the Article - Millions of Android users who are customers of Australia’s largest banks are the targets.

The Malware is designed to mimic 20 mobile banking apps from Australia, New Zealand and Turkey.

Along with stealing the login details the malware can also intercept two-factor authentication-code sent to the phone via SMS and forwards the code to hackers while hiding said activity from the users.

The Malware walks onto Android phones by imitating the Adobe Flash Player App - once installed the app requests device admin rights - checks for installed banking apps and then reports home in order to download relevant fake login screens.

And in some cases the malware superimposes a fake warning over the device admin list to prevent de-activation - Brilliant.

And one last one - which I could not resist - and thanks go to William T for sending the screen shot from an article in USA today tech section titled quote I dropped a $672 Samsung Galaxy in the toilet  unquote -

Which could have just as easily have been titled - I parked my Car in the garage -  Or I put my Desk in my Office or I put the Milk in the Fridge.  Of course you put the Galaxy in the toilet - Duhhhh

    Rob,

One of the past episodes a listener was looking for an app to provide the best time to leave to get to a location on time.

I have used INRIX Traffic, it uses traffic data & historical data to predict the best time to leave, I use it when I am in an area I haven't been in before to give me a time to leave my hotel.

    Hi Rob,

There was someone in episode 384 asking for a way to share photos across Apple IDs but not get the same messages. I would use 2 different Apple IDs (to not get the same messages) and I would recommend an app called Flickr. You have to sign up for a free account on Flickr, Your Flickr account gives you 1 terabyte of free photo and video space (which can probably hold way more than 7,000 photos) and these photos are private but if you want to share them publicly or to a family member you can. Whenever you open the app it automatically uploads your photos to Flickr (it may take a while the first time). I use this app all the time and find it very useful and very easy!

    Thanks for the show Rob

    https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/1625379

Thanks to Brent for the heads up on this next one.

And it is an indie gogo project called popSlate2 - Smart Second Screen for iPhone

This one has a goal of $75k - and currently has raised over 620k - just a week bit over the goal - congrats.

You have until about March 29th to fund this one.

So what is this - well quote - put the back side of your phone to work with an e-reader, smartwatch and battery case all in one. unquote.

Pricing for this is $79 - and they estimate shipping in July.

This is for the iPhone 6 and 6S and also the 6+ and 6S+  obviously different versions for each phone.

As they say you get an at-a-glance e-ink display on the back - which is always on and lower power use.  You can set it to display content you use the most or as they show - put your airline boarding pass on it.

Or have the score to a basketball game.

You can even use as an e-reader.

This looks very interesting - again it is called the popSlate2 with 2 being the number and it all one word.

You can search for popSlate2 at indiegogo dot com or in the show notes for ep 385.

Thanks to Dr. John for this next one.

And it is an article with the very pithy title

quote Apple asks FCC to recognize Made

For iPhone hearing aids to encourage accessibility innovation unquote

Here is what Apple said in their FCC filing

    quote

Apple is driven to make its devices truly accessible, and believes that consumers with hearing loss deserve a better experience than what traditional hearing aid compatibility technologies offer today. iPhones comply with existing HAC rules. But as the Commission has recognized, Apple has also invested heavily to improve accessibility by developing a new hearing aid platform that relies on Bluetooth® technology.

Apple believes that this Made for iPhone (“MFi”) hearing aid platform represents a substantial improvement to consumers over devices that are deemed accessible by today’s HAC rules. In order to encourage innovators to develop new and better ways to improve handset accessibility, the Commission’s rules should recognize solutions such as the MFi hearing aid platform as alternatives for hearing aid compatibility compliance.

    http://www.computerworld.com/article/3042175/apple-ios/

    lookout-every-apple-watch-user-needs-this-app.html

Johnny Evans at computerworld had a nice article on an app called Lookout for the Apple Watch.  As he states in the article. The app

    quote

     has four primary features:

    • First it will buzz your watch when you are almost out of Bluetooth range with your iPhone;
    • Secondly it will make your iPhone “shout” if you need help finding it – even when the phone is in silent mode;
    • And will also show you the last known location of your iPhone on a Map on your watch.
    • A Bluetooth signal-based distance meter function shows the relative distance between your watch and your iPhone.

    unquote

So if you are someone that tends to put your iPhone down and walk away - check out this app for your Apple watch - again it is called lookout - one word .

Here is a question I get often but have not mentioned in a while so worth repeating:

    > Rob,

    > Have any of your other listeners had Safari disappear? I have an iPhone 6sPlus, 128 Gb. running iOS 9.2.1.

    > I've done hard resets and it still is gone. If all else fails, I'll do a total reset, but I'd obviously prefer a different solution!

    Regards,

    > Bill in Houston

    Hi Bill

Go to Settings - General - Restrictions - and toggle safari it back on - sounds like you dis-abled it in restrictions.

    Hi Rob

Thanks so much for your prompt response! You nailed the answer! All is now well with Safari!

    Regards,

    Bill

One other post from the Google+ Tii Com

    From Michael P

Quote Did the following happen to anyone else today: For some reason I got e-mails from three of my credit cards registered with Apple Pay that they were deleted from Apple Pay. But when I go into the Wallet App on my iPhone and the Setting -> Wallet & Apple Pay on my iPad they are still there.

I didn't turn off Passcode or sign out of iCloud on either device.

    unquote

This is called a Phishing scam - if you get emails with links about Apple pay and your credit card - delete the email - and delete your deleted emails - You want to run away from those emails as fast as possible.

Michael - Thanks for the post.

Hi Rob, and your most recent episode you had a caller who would like to share photos between his phone and his wife. This is not possible with apples iCloud service. You can install Google photos on each phone and signed into the same account to solve this problem. Then each phone will be able to view each other's photos.

    Regards,

    Dave

    Hi Rob

Since iOS 9.2 or  9.2.1 around 2/20/16.  I have been having problems. Messaging and FaceTime are no longer showing on my MacBook Pro, the activation code does not show on MB that links my iOS devices.

Also iTunes will not backup iOS devices to Computer.  I can do iCloud backups.  I get error (-54), and the "Genius" says it is backing up, but the backup does not seem to complete.

I went to Apple Store in Wellington, FL, with no resolution.  I answered the survey after my Genius Bar visit. No response.

I am hoping all these problems will be resolved with the next update.

Looking forward to updates on AppleTV 4th Gen, adding more Apps, using my wireless keyboard for easier searches, etc.

Apple seems to be asleep at the switch because there seem to be a lot of booboos slipping through.  Please tell them to get it together.. lol

    Sheesh!

Thanks for all you do, Rob.  I listen to your podcasts the day they are released.  Love the show!

    Barbara E.

    Greenacres, FL, USA

    Hi, Rob

I suspect you have discussed this poiint in the past, but what is Apple's thinking behind not allowing the Podcast app to go full screen.  Watching any video podcast with all that white space is terminally frustrating.  Is there a rationale or a fix coming?  It's been a while now.

    Regards,

    John

This week we have promo codes for The App - Snapanactor - one word - Here is the review and some comments from the dev.

    Hi Rob,

I enjoyed your last podcast which I listened to yesterday.  Having just spent a small fortune on Gillette blades, I am seriously considering Harrys.  I already tried Dollar Shave Club, but the blades were just not up to the job.

I'm including 10 codes for Snapanactor that expire on March 22nd, 2016. Here's my blurb!

    Regards,

    Lee

And here is his written Review:

"The new version of Snapanactor is now on the App Store.  Avoid the frustration of trying to remember the name of an actor or where you've seen them before.  The advanced facial recognition engine now identifies more actors and with new features like movie details, cast lists, biographies and trailers, there's even more to discover about your favorite actors.  We listened to user feedback and after a redesign, the app looks and runs better.  With many more features planned and still maintaining the low launch price, now is a great time to add Snapanactor to your iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad."

Well thanks to LEE for his review of his App - SNAPanACTOR and for sending in the promo codes to give away.  Folks if you would like a chance for a promo code for this App - send an email to todayinios at gmail dot com and put SNAPanACTOR one word  in the subject line.

    http://www.phonedog.com/2016/02/22/ios-93-beta-

    4-update-rolling-out-along-new-watchos-and-tvos-betas

Well I know it was a while since the last episode - because TWO beta’s for iOS 9.3 were released - iOS 9.3 Beta 4 and beta 5.

Lets start with beta 4 which was released on Feb 22nd just hours after the last episode went live.  Apple also released new betas that day for Watch OS 2.2 beta 4 and TV OS beta 4.

Some of the new features / fixes with iOS 9.3 beta 4 - one it fixed a bug where 64 Bit iPhones and iPads could be bricked when the date was set to Jan 1st 1970 - we mentioned that bug on the last episode - well beta 4 squashes it.

How did they fix it - well they just stopped you on how far into the past you could travel.  Now December 31st 2000 at 7PM ET is as far back as you can go. Which is 12:00 AM GMT - which is when this century started.  No 1999 was not the end of the last century - December 31st 2000 was.

Also if you were someone that actually got your iOS device bricked by going back to 1970 - well this update unbricks your iOS device.

    http://www.macrumors.com/2016/02/24/ios-

    http://www.redmondpie.com/night-shift-in-ios-9.3-

    beta-5-heres-what-has-changed/

We mentioned iOS 9.3 beta 5 was also released - which happened on March 1st - just barely a week after beta 4 was released.

One of the key changes with Beta 5 is with Night Shift.  Now if a device is in low power mode it will not shift to Night Shift.  Some say this is not a change but a bug - because well - how does going to Night Shift affect battery life?

There were also some minor tweaks to wording around night shift controls and even the messages you see when you toggle it on or off from the control center.

Another change with Beta 5 - at least for iPad Pro and Apple pencil owners - is Beta 5 restores full control of the Apple Pencil - so you can use it to flip between pages or any other way you would use your finger to interact with the screen.

And with Beta 5 there is a new setting to disable songs from playlists being added to My Music.

    Apple Watch Notification are fixed

And there is improved 3D touch in portrait mode on the iphone 6S Plus

    08:42

    http://www.iphonehacks.com/2016/03/ios-9-3-lets-admins-

    enforce-home-screen-blacklist-apps.html

Another new feature found with Beta 5 - was found via a PDF on Apples dev center - titled - Configuration profile reference” and apple mentions in the document quote Home Screen Layout Payload, which defines a layout of apps, folders, and web clips for the Home screen. unquote

In layman’s terms - If you have a company owned device - they can set up your homes screen with the apps in the order and location of their choosing - not yours.  That goes for Folders and Web Bookmarks as well.

Additionally IT admins can black list and white list specific apps.  Say good by Tinder, Youtube, Geometry Dash and NBA 2K16.

9.3 Beta 5 also lets admins disable your camera, iTunes Radio, and lock notifications - Dang - might as well just give them a blackberry if you are going to do all that.

    From Tosin O

iOS 9.3 will tell you if your employer is tracking your iPhone - BGR

I know Rob has little faith in BGR but is there any truth in this article?

Hi Tosin - when it comes to rumors for future features or iOS device - BGR bats worse than my 7 year old off his attention meds.

But when it comes to reporting something that can be found and verified and is out there - then they can be fine.

This time it seems to be the latter and there are screen shots and will other articles they seemed to have borrowed from - yeah they do that well too.

Essentially Apple has had this capability before - but what is different now with iOS 9.3 beta 5 is that Apple is actually disclosing to users that your employer can see where you are and what you surf is set up with the built in Mobile Device Management feature.

So really - this is not about new features - just more transparency around features that were already there for a while.

So now if your company is managing / tracking the phone they gave you - you will see a message saying quote This iPhone is managed by your organization” unquote and that is up on the lock screen.

And you can find that in the Settings - General - About section as well.

    confirms-jailbreak-ios-9-3.html

And finally with iOS 9.3 Beta 5 - one other feature is that it is still jail breakable.

Some reported apple patched a jailbreak vulnerability with 9.3 Beta 5 - but Todesco the hacker that jailbroke iOS 9.3 beta earlier versions - did confirm that Beta 5 is also still jail breakable.

Sadly there is no plans by Tedesco to release said jailbreak. So while it is still possible - it may not be released even after 9.3 Gold Master is released.

    swiss-watches-for-the-first-time.htm

Thanks for Dr. John for this next one.

Which is a report from Strategy Analytics that reveals that smartwatches - led by the Apple Watch - outsold Swiss Watches in the 4th quarter of 2015.

They estimate that there were 8.1 Million smartwatches sold last quarter vs 7.9 Million units of Swiss Watches.

The problem I have with these type of articles is this - APPLE DID NOT SAY HOW MANY THEY SOLD.

So to say Apple led the way and Smartwatches outsold swiss watches barely - is really arbitrary - It could just as easily have been 7.1 million smart watches sold as 8.1 - because if Apple is number one and Apple has not released any numbers - it is all a big guess.

I Mentioned I was going to NRB last week - and while at the show a gentlemen by the name of Jason with Love Packages approached me and very politely asked how do I shave my head.  See Jason is bald also - and he mentioned he tried that crazy head blade and those cheap razors that cost a buck - and they all cut him up good.

By the way a bald guy asking another bald guy how you shave your head is like an Actress on the red carpet asking another Actress who made your dress.  Or PTO mom at my kids school asking another PTO Mom who did  plastic surgery.  It is a great compliment is what I am try to say.

I told Jason proudly I use Harry’s razors - but I went one step further - as it was the last day of the show and I had my suitcase with me - I pulled out the my Harrys travel bag and showed him my Golden Harry’s razor and let him hold it and feel the quality of the handle.  I talked about how the 5 blade razor is much much better than those razors that cost a buck - Harry’s razors are after all a low priced blade but one that does not feel like it cost a buck.  Actually it feels and works much better than those way way over priced razors they keep locked up at the store.

I did not get into how Harry’s purchased a factory in Germany that makes their blades - as that kind of would have been weird.  But I did tell him if he went to harrys.com and used promo code tii - he would save $5 off his first order.

And I also told him about the great after shave lotion and how my wife said it made me smell hot - which in hindsight was a little weird - but true none the less.

A couple hours later Jason came back and told me not only did he order a razor from Harry’s - he also ordered the travel bag and the after shave lotion.  And Jason if you are listening - I hope you are enjoying your harry’s products and thanks for asking about my very nicely shaven bald head.  Which again I have to give all credit to  Harry’s.  folks go to harry’s dot com - and use promo code tii to save $5 off your first order and start shaving better today.

    VOICEMAIL - Brian_Mass_Cant_see_all_photos

    Hi Rob,

On the question I wrote in about a couple episodes ago, and listener Roger commented on in the last episode regarding tagging your photos, interestingly a couple days ago Google released an API for their photo recognition software called Google Cloud Vision.

The main difference between this and other photo recognition software API's is that Google Could Vision recognizes not only faces, but also physical characteristics within the photos and tags them accordingly. For instance a photo of someone riding a bike across a bridge would automatically be tagged with the person's identity (if known) as well as "bike" and "bridge". It also applies a "score" to each tag representing the confidence level of the applied tag. It even recognizes emotional sentiment (happy, sad, angry, etc.).

The reason I'm bringing this up is if there are any enterprising app coders listening out there, this could be a great opportunity to build an iOS app that automatically indexes a user's photos, tags them accordingly and allows them to search and organize their photos based on the tags. The API is open in Beta now and sample iOS code is available in GitHub. During Beta release the API allows indexing of up to 20 million photos per month.

Here's a link to the announcement, samples and documentation:

    Hi Rob,

Hope this day finds you well.

Today my wife was FaceTiming with our son and asked if we could mirror it to our 4th generation Apple TV. So, long story short, she tried & it actually worked, to my surprise. She just held the phone pointed at her & looked at the TV. The issue was, although it was a much larger picture than her phone, it was only about 12-15" on our big TV. I did a little research & some say we could view it on full screen only if he was using a laptop. He was using an iPad, I'm not sure which generation. My question to you & the listeners is, is there another way for us to view FaceTime calls full screen on our TV?

Thanks for everything, including a great podcast.

    http://www.iosfannews.com/2016/02/iphone-7-

    will-be-completely-different.html

And now on to rumors about the iPhone that rhymes with Evan.

Latest rumor is that Apple is testing 3 designs and Apple has yet to decide the final plan - and no I am sure that is in no way meant to be a CYA for those putting out the rumor.

One of those designs or maybe all of them are without the 3.5 MM headphone jack.  They will all have a completely new and thinner body.

But oh wait those reporting the rumors say Apple quote plans to prepare a standby unquote in which the iPhone that rhymes with Devon would have many similarities in design to the iPhone 6.  So in other words - it will either be a completely new design or you know it will not.  Brilliant.

And I only report this because if I can’t get the 5 minutes of my life back for having ready that article - you can’t get back the last 30 seconds.

    most-credible-iphone-7-rumors.html

Speaking of iPhone that rhymes with heaven - Computer world had an article of 12 of the most credible rumors about said iPhone.

First if that Apple will not make it a name that rhymes with 11 - but rather would make the biggest one the iPhone Pro.

Another rumor is said iPhone will be Thinner - because well because.  Rumor is the next iPhone Pro would be 6.3 MM thick vs 7.3 MM for the 6S+

Of course the rumor about the headphone jack going the way of the dodo bird is in the list.

There is a rumor about wireless charging - hey wait - I thought they said these were credible rumors - ummm no.

Oh wait - here we go - They said the sun will come up tomorrow - I mean there will be improvements to the Camera - as if.  Of course there will be improvements - and some rumors lately are saying a dual camera for the iPhone Pro version.

There are rumors about the sun setting - ummm I mean it being faster as well - as if.  They think maybe a 6 core A10 processor and more ram.

There were some other rumors like that of an OLED screen - but not until 2017 - and harder aluminum case - making it tough like nails.

That all said no real rumors in that list about the 4 incher.

    26:04

    http://www.gadgetlite.in/2016/03/apple-

    iphone-5se-in-retail-box-leaks.html

And speaking of the new 4 Incher - there was a supposed picture of the new iphone 5SE in its box.

And yes on the box it is called the iPhone 5SE

Most rumors are still saying there will be an apple event mid month with launch the end of the month.

We should know more by the next episode.

    26:37

    http://www.gadgetlite.in/2016/02/apple-new-4-

    inch-iphone-se-is-said-to.html

And some more rumors about the 4 Incher are it will have a new 12 MB back side came, And of course an NFC chip, the same A9 processor as the 6S and 6S+, And either 16GB or 64GB versions - or way to low and just right for most.  The battery is also supposed to be bigger than the 5S.

    verizon-testing-5g-speeds-up-to-10-100x-faster-than-lte

Ok - lets get into some news that eventually should lead to tech in a future iPhone - and that is the news that AT&T just announced that joining will be they - with Verizon in carrying out tests of 5G networks in the real world.

Verizon is reporting speed bumps of about 30 to 50 times that of existing 4G LTE.  AT&T is hoping to see speed bumps up to 100 times faster.

    Quote

"We expect 5G to deliver speeds 10-100 times faster than today's average 4G LTE connections. Customers will see speeds measured in gigabits per second, not megabits. For reference, at one gigabit per second, you can download a TV show in less than 3 seconds. Customers will also see much lower latency with 5G. Latency, for example, is how long it takes after you press play on a video app for the video to start streaming on your device. We expect 5G latency in the range of 1 to 5 milliseconds."

    unquote

So what does this all mean for iPhone users - just that we will likely have to wait until at least 1 year after Android phones get on said 5G networks before Apple supports it and maybe a little longer.  Historically Apple has not been a first adopter of faster Wireless tech.

    pulls-ad-blocking-app-for-samsung-phones

Here is one way Sammy Phones will not be the same as iPhones - There will be no Ad blocking Apps for them.  Well not officially in the Google App stores it appears.  As Google yanked the Adblock Fast App - which blocks ads in Samsung’s own mobile browser.   The App had actually been supported by Samsung - because well it looked similar to something available for the iPhone - so of course Sammy was behind it.

Google on the other hand who panders and coddles and kisses up to Advertisers - well they were on this like a duck on Cheetoo - and yanked said App from their App store.

Google claims it broke one of their rules per their reason to the developer - and per reporters Googles only comments about this yanking was the following

    quote

We can confirm that our policies are designed to provide a great experience for users and developers.

And by Great they mean Bloated with Ads and more Ads - and then a few more.

    Hi Rob,

Hope everything is okay with you  I have not seen a podcast from you this week

Curious if you know of a app  or anyone in the audience has a app they recommend with good ringtones or the ability to make ringtones without having a computer?

    Or NGN

Well NGN - I will throw that one out to the audience.

    Good Morning, Rob!

Curious if anyone else has written in with a similar rant?  (I posted this on Facebook earlier.)

So, if I subscribe to Apple Music (Apple Radio)...it activates their older service called iTunes Match...which disallows me from adding music to my phone from the iTunes library on my computer? So, how do I get my music purchases from BeatPort (or any other music service, like Amazon) over to my phone!?!?! I don't know if this is an Apple bug or a conspiracy.#Frustrated

My question is: can I keep both Apple Music and the ability to sync media from my laptop iTunes library?  If not, it makes the decision to keep Apple Music simple…hello Spotify.

Thanks Brent - and he is talking about the indie gogo project called ironwire mini by Echo - the $10 pocket sized cable.

And the help part is they have raised $12k towards a goal of $50k and they have about a dozen days left.

As you might guess these are short cables - USB to Lightning, or USB C to Lightning  or USB to Micro USB or USB C to USB.

And they are $10 each and built very ruggedly and are short to easily back or put in your pocket.

Good for connecting to a battery back so if you have both in your pocket you don’t have a long cord in there as well.

They expect to ship in June

And if you want to get in on this search for ironwire mini - with ironware one word over at indiegogo dot com.

I have from time to time heard of people complaining that their iPhone would constantly and continuously request your iCloud login details and password and after you enter them - it asks again and again - a really PITA.

Well there is a nice Article from Johnny Evans at Computer world that goes over what to do if you are one of those being annoyed / frustrated by this issue.

    1. Check to make sure iCloud is actually working by going the system status page and making sure it is all green icons.

    2. Assuming all is ok on Apples end with iCloud - reset your device.  Either hold down the sleep / wake button and shut it down that way or do the resent network settings.

If that does not work - then you might need to reset iCloud or reset your password - more info is available in the article titled - What to do when your iPhone keeps requesting your iCloud password - in the show notes for ep 384.

    Hi Rob,

I have recently run into a problem with my use of Family Sharing as it relates to shared app purchases and specifically in-app purchases.

My question for you and the listeners is do you know of a way to restore in-app purchases across accounts linked by Family Sharing?

Maybe some app developers who listen to your show could chime in on the validity of my imagined API call that finds previous in-app purchases and if there is a way to look across linked iTunes accounts.  This part is more curiosity than anything, but I figure it could at least be an entertaining topic for your listeners (and me).

Hi Rob, Do you think that we apple users are likely to survive this

FBI government overreach crap trying to force Apple to basically

compromise security to the point that it is open to all hackers at

will so that the damn ridiculous out of control US government can spy

on anything damn thing that they want at any time given a reason or

otherwise? I am not contesting them having a right to see the

information off of that one phone having gone through the right

channels, but I believe they need to consider the big picture and what

that means. What they are asking for makes it clear in my opinion that

the information on this phone alone is not what they are even after.

They are using this is an excuse to compromise Apple security so they

can have a constant feed to all I-Devices like they have wanted for a

long time. They should not be able to get that for no reason, but if

this was going to be decided on reasonable arguments based on the

facts and correct priorities I would not be worried. What leaves me

extremely worried is that the out of control government just hands

down decrees based on what they want and the peoples' rights be

damned. They do what they want and circumvent the people when they

think the people get in the way of what the government wants and even

if they do go through congress, the people in congress, for the most

part, don't understand even 19th century technology. Are we at the

point that if they just demand Apple trash security for the government

priorities we have no options and we are basically screwed and is that

the narrow path we are stuck on at this point? Is there hope and are

    there options?

    I appreciate all you do,

    Jim

    Hi Rob,

I know you like listener reviews for the show, so here is one I've recorded for you about Beddit - an iPhone accessory for sleep monitoring.

I forgot to mention on the recording also, the app features an Apple Watch companion app too, which can record a daytime nap away from your bed to add to your sleep score, which I've not used yet but seems like a handy extra feature.

As ever, the show is massively appreciated

Thanks for all the kind words and feedback per the last episode and my 45 Minute segment on Apple v. FBI - and there has been a few more pieces of news for this story - and what I want to do is give a quick overview of the past two weeks news - probably and likely from a slightly slanted perspective - because well so much of the news has been pro Apple - anti FBI in the last two weeks - at least the news you have been sending in and I have been finding.

So here is the quick review.

Microsoft President Brad Smith sided with Apple when speaking at the RSA 2016 security conference saying quote The Path to Hell starts at the backdoor unquote.  Hmm I wonder if knows an ex-girl friend of mine that used to say the same thing.

Apple put up a page on their site to help answer your questions about Apple security - it was just a tad bit slanted in Apple favor.  But if you want to read this - look for the link titled Customer Letter FAQ in the show notes for ep 384

Tim Cook also went on ABC News and talked with David Muir - to talk about this and compared what the government was asking the equivalent of cancer.  Interestingly that interview was done in his office. So if nothing else check out the video to see part of Tim Cooks office.

My wife also had an iPhone issued by the County and she did not use it for any personal communication. San Bernardino is one of the largest counties in the country.  They can track the phone on GPS in case they needed to determine where people were. Second, both the iCloud account and carrier account were controlled by the county so they could track any communications. This was common knowledge among my wife and other employees. I support Apple and the decision they have made. I don't believe Tim Cook or any Apple employee believes in supporting terrorism any more than I do. I think the vicious attacks I've read in the media against one of America's greatest companies are terrible, unquote.

Mr Salihin was not the only unexpected supporter Apple received - Kinda.

US Secretary of Defense Ash Carter - While speaking at a cybersecurity conference said that for departments within his purview,  quote data security is an absolute necessity. We're foursquare behind strong data security and encryption. unquote and he add that he is quote not a believer in back doors or a single technical approach to what is a complex problem, unquote

He continued on to say that if the rift between Silicon Valley and the FBI continues and they can not come together it could result in legislation  quote written by people who won't have technical knowledge, maybe written in an atmosphere of anger or grief unquote where  The net effect of such legislative reaction could cause more harm than good.

On the last episode I did talk about the one case in New york with Apple and the drug dealers phone - well the court in new york rejected the governments use of the All Writs act in this case.  Judge Orenstein said the governments interpretation of the All Writs act was so broad as to be unconstitutional

Quote The extraordinary relief [the government] seeks cannot be considered "agreeable to the usages and principles of law." In arguing to the contrary, the government posits a reading of the latter phrase so expansive – and in particular, in such tension with the doctrine of separation of powers – as to cast doubt on the AWA's constitutionality if adopted. unquote

Can you say surpreme court - because that is looking more and more likely for this case.

Remember how on the last Episode I mentioned how FBI Director Comey said the case in San Bernardino was a one of case and not for setting a precedence.  Yeah - he said that in a letter and publicly.  But then this week he had to talk to a congressional hearing - and when in front of congress - his tone changed a little and by little I mean 180 degrees little - saying  yes of course it would set a precedent.   As if anyone doubted it would.

    argument-for-iphone-unlock-cyber-pathogen-really/

And last but not least this week on this convoluted story comes the craziest of stories.

Seems The government has watched one episode too many of X-Files.

The argument put forth by the San Bernardino County District Attorney on why the iPhone had to hacked is because the device could have been used to introduce quote a dormant cyber pathogen unquote onto the government networks.

    From Engadget on this quote

The other part of the DA's argument is that the iPhone could be the key to this yet-to-be-activated virus that's been hidden on the county's network. As security research Zdziarski says, if it's already been detected, then it's pretty easy to break it into pieces and reverse-engineer a cure. If it hasn't been detected, then the whole notion of this cyber pathogen virus has been pulled out of someone's backside. Which means that the hearing on March 22nd is going to stink of something other than the judicial process.  unquote

So folks - what say you - has anyone resent the News App - and if so how did you do it - give us a call or send us an email.  And thanks for your help for James.

    Hey, Rob:

"Word on the street" is that if Apple were to buy Time Warner, they wouldn't buy it as a whole, but just the entertainment portion; Time Warner Entertainment, not Time Warner Cable.  The Mac Observer had a really good discussion on Apple Context Machine Podcast 341, and here are just a few articles that I found discussing the "conundrum".

If he gets that Pencil in February and still doesn't feel right about owning that thing, I will GLADLY own it for him! LOL #MustReallySuckToBeHim 😝
