    TRANSCRIPT FOR EPISODE 390

Welcome to the show I am your host Rob and this is the Today in iOS podcast -  First up I want to thank STEVE for sending in the music you hear in the background. STEVE  wrote:

    Hi Rob,

This song is called HUMMING AT NO CAL and was created on iOS devices using Audiobus and a lot of other apps

    Humming at No. Cal

Rabbi Steve asked I correct some info - I have said his songs were created with Garageband and other apps - but he wanted to point out Garageband is a very small piece of it and many times not used at all but Audiobus was a big piece and for more info on How Rabbi Steve puts together his songs - go back and listen to the beginning of ep 381 - it was very extensive and detailed.

Thanks STEVE for the music and folks I will put the full song at the end of the episode.   I also want to thank STEPHANIE for sending in the Artwork for today's show.  STEPHANIE wrote the following:

    Hi Rob,

I took this photo on my Rose Gold iPhone 6s Plus and brightened to color and added the text with Fotor app. Found this tree blooming flowers on my college campus and wanted to use it as my phones background and thought I'd share.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote

“The markets are different. The iPhone is an expensive toy for the wealthy and self-indulgent, while the DS is an inexpensive toy for everyone. I think that Apple will succeed in making mobile phone games a bit more accessible and fun, but cannot conceive of their gaining significant share of the handheld market. The iPhone is unlikely to ever compete effectively, as it is unlikely to attract the level of third-party developer support afforded the DS.” unquote

Michael Pachter, Wedbush Morgan Securities, 14 August 2007

Hmmm I wonder when you say the phrase 3rd party developer support - today - how many people would think DS - Just Saying.

Well since the last episode iOS 9.3.2 betas 2 and 3 were released - beyond the normal bug fixes you get in double dot updates and their betas there was also the combining of Nightshift and low power mode - which previously it was one or the other but not both - now both are available at the same time.

    07:01

    http://www.apple.com/investor/earnings-call/

Apple had their quarterly conference call this week - and how did they do - well it depends on who you read - and then it varies from Run away run away the white Walkers are coming to just well not as good as we hoped but in their guidance range.

And in their guidance range is one of the first things Tim Cook said when he announced Revenue for the quarter of 50.6 Billion dollars.  Vs $58 Billion in the year ago quarter marking the fist year over year drop for a quarter since well the iPod launched.  The decline was a 13% drop year over year - but Tim quickly talked about headwinds and fluctuating currencies and said really it was just a 9% drop when you factor in the currency changes.

For the last quarter Apple sold 51.2 Million iPhones vs 61.2 Million in the year ago quarter.  In fairness Apple did state last conference call - iPhone sales would be lower due to an unusually strong 2015 first quarter which was 40% greater than the year before that.

Tim did talk about Apple Watch sales - kinda - just saying Apple Watch sales met their expectations - which of course he did not say what said expectations were.  Other than to say that quarter traditionally saw a big drop vs the previous quarter especially when looking at iPod sales.  So Christmas quarter be good - next quarter be bad.  Or put another way Apple really really lowered their expectations for the last quarter and that is where sales came in - really low. He did says Sales of the Apple watch in its first year exceeded iPhone sales in its first year.  And incase you are curious that means Apple watch sales were above the 5.4 Million mark.

Tim did say the iPhone SE is seeing “terrific response” and Demand has been very strong and exceeds supply.  But none of the sales were in this past quarter - all in the current quarter.

iPad Sales last quarter were 10.3 Million units vs 12.6 Million in the year ago quarter.  So both drops in iPhone and iPads year over year.

Hmmm - me thinks the iPhone SE and new 9.7 iPad Pro should have launched a wee bit earlier - just sayin.

Tim did say this current quarters sales for iPads should be the best compare yr over yr of the past 2 years.  Of course that does not mean growth - as every quarter for the last two years has seen yr over yr decline.

Last quater was also the first time ever for the iPhone that there was a decline in the trailing 4 quarters of iPhone sales.

One stat they gave was the iPad had   78 % market share for tablets priced about $200 according to NPD.

Moving on to Cash - Apple Ended quarter with more money than the Iron bank with $232.9 Billion in Cash and equivalents up $17.2 Billion for the quarter.   FYI - 90% of it is sitting off shore.

As expected per the Dividend it was raised - going from $0.52 per share to $0.57 per share - next dividend is on May 12th.

To put the dividend in perspective - if you purchased Apple shares 13 years ago and still have them - you will be getting more dividends in the next two payouts Dollar wise then you spent for that share 13 years ago.

    apple-earnings/index.html

The Apple Earnings report really were not a surprise at all.  On Monday CNN ran an post titled - quote

Apple is about to announce that it had its worst quarter in 13 years.

    unquote

What they mean by Worst quarter is when you compare that quarter to the year ago quarter.  OBVIOUSLY Apple’s last quarter was much better Overall Dollars wise vs most previous quarters.  But growth wise - it is the first time in over 50 Quarters that when compared to the year ago quarter it was actually lower.  That is an incredible run.

    Or to quote CNN

    quote

The last time Apple's sales fell year over year was the first quarter of 2003. At that time, the PowerMac was still the company's bestseller. Apple had sold a grand total of 611,000 iPods to that point. And Apple hadn't yet launched the iTunes Music Store.

    unquote

And all is not doom and gloom - Remember the last quarter of 2015 was the one Apple reported the greater quarter ever for any company - Period.  And last quarter as bad as some people paint it - was still more revenue than Apple did in All of 2009.  And more than most of their competitors will do all of this year.

It is hard to feel sorry for a company that added over 17 Billion in Cash to their Bank last quarter.

    12:31

    http://ped30.com/2016/04/20/apple-ipad-q2-2016/

Our good friend Philip Elmer DeWitt - who has broken out on his own thanks to a loop hole in his contract.  Way to Go Philip.  Well Philip is still putting together those lists of what anal-ists predicted for Apple.

Per the iPads - the range of guesses was between 8 Mil to 12 Mil units.  And the actual number was almost dead center at 10.3 Mil units.

Way to optimistic was Walter Piecyk with the 12 Mil guess - and way to pessimistic was Timothy Arcuri with the 8 Mil guess.

With Closest to the hole honors going to Kubindar Garcha and Toni the Tiger Sacconachi - both with the odd guess of 10.48 Mil.

This is the first time I can remember where the Pro analysts were both too high and too low - and then also closest to the pin.

    13:28

    http://ped30.com/2016/04/19/apple-iphone-sales-q2-2016/

Per iPhones sold and the guesses of Analists - they were 47 Mil on the low side to 54.50 Mil units on the high side with the average coming in at 51.37 units.

Intersting not Philip said this prior to the event.

quote I’ve got a rule of thumb: Every $1 billion revenue  = 1 million iPhones unquote.

Well the actual Revenue was 50.6 Billion and the number of iPhones sold was 51.2 Mil - so yeah pretty close.

Quote The low estimate of 47 million was submitted by Cowan and Co.’s Timothy Arcuri; the high of 54.5 million came from Robert Paul Leitao of the independent Braeburn Group. unquote

Mr. Arcuri is kind of a negative Nancy on Apple with both the low guess for iPads and iPhones.

Per closest to the pin - that honor goes to once again -  Kubindar Garcha with the odd guess of 51.22 Mil units - but hey I guess the odd numbers are working for him.

Some good / bad news.  The good news is Carl Ichan has sold all his shares in Apple - the bad news is Carl Ichan has sold all his shares in Apple.

He is stating he sold most of his shares in February because quote I got out because I’m Worries about China unquote

China recently shut down Apple’s iTunes movies and iBooks service - The reason for the shut down seems to be the China objects to some of the content in those parts of the store.

No word yet for how long this lock down will be - but Apple is saying it is working to get them back as soon as possible.

This looks to be purely a censorship issue - with China recently putting more laws in place with regards to censorship - as in add more not taking it away.

Again on the Plus side - we don’t have to listen to idiotic statements from Ichan with regards to Apple anymore.

    15:37

    http://www.businessinsider.com/plural-apple-product-

    names-iphone-ipad-macintosh-2016-4

So we have talked about Carl Ichan bolting Apple stock because China has shut out the iTunes store.

We talked about last quarter being Apples first quarter in 50+ quarters with declining in yr over yr revenue.  And Apple missing Anal-ists estimates and barely coming in on their own.  This resulted in Apple over the last couple of weeks going from $112 down to $93 around an 17% reduction or an over 100 Billion dollar drop in Market cap in the last two weeks.

Essentially people running around screaming the sky is falling the sky is falling.  Apple Stocks beating is not as bad as the one Stannis Barethon had but reading the reports it seems close.

So what is Phil Schiller doing on the Marketing side to help turn the tide.  Well he went on Twitter and was trying to correct how we say iPhones plural - where we should not be saying I have 5 iPhones rather I have 5 iPhone devices.  You don’t say you have a couple of iPads - you say you have a couple of iPad devices.

UMMMMM - ok - I mean sure why not channel your inner Mingon Fogahtery while the Tech press is writing about your impending doom.  Seems logical.  Just Sayin.

    http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/18/siri-announces-wwdc-2016-

    will-be-held-june-13th-through-june-17th-in-san-francisco/

Congrats to Francisco T who was able to get tickets to WWDC this year having won the lottery.

As he said quote -  it's super difficult to win them now, you can't do it like in the past where you could have your whole team apply and then if you won, you'd transfer to the selected team member, now it's you win you pay, you go, no refunds LOL  I'm so excited to be able to go!! unquote

I heard from some others about this as well - if you are in a situation where the lead dev in your company is the one that really needs to go - but it was a new entry level / Jr. Dev that was selected - a little birdie told me if you reach out to Developer contact - Apple might be about to help you.  Just sayin.  Shhhh don’t tell anyone.

Now If you have the Tii app you saw a push message about it late last week letting you know that Apple had opened up the window to register for the WWDC lottery. And again Francisco was lucky enough to win tickets.

WWDC this year will be from June 13th to June 17th.  With a keynote on the 13th.  We will then learn many of the new features for iOS 10 - or what ever they will be calling it.   And which devices will get support for it and which will not - iPhone 4S - I think your time has come.

If you are also going - please let me know.  So far Apple has not extended an invitation to me to come and cover it like MS did with their dev conference.  Just sayin.  But then again I am definitely not holding my breath for that to happen.

Later in the episode I will have the first of those recordings from MS Build.

The Way Apple let the cat out of the bag for WWDC per when it is was going to be was pretty funny - they Let siri spill the beans.

If you had asked siri when WWDC was - she gave the dates and times prior to Apples official announcement - and this was noticed and reported by 9to5 Mac prior to Apples official announcement.  Siri she just can’t be trusted with a secret.

Interestingly - The Keynote on the 13th will not be at the Mosocne West center as in the past - and where WWDC is being held - but rather at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.

    From Apple quote

Monday’s kickoff events, including the keynote address, will be held at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. The rest of the week’s conference sessions will take place at Moscone West.

    unquote

I have heard from a few others that won the WWDC lottery - if you are going as well - I would love to get your feedback and thoughts while at the event.  You can call or email said comments to the show.

    Hi Rob,

For all around general use the Plantronics voyager is ok. Like most units its not loud enough in a noisy environment. The music is decent even in just one ear.  The mic reduces noise slightly.

I see a lot of people using the new wave of around the neck units with little round earbuds that pull out. Personally I don't get along with the little round earbuds. They end up falling out of my ears.

I've tried plantronics backbeat go2 and don't like them for this reason. Need a pair cheap?

For headphones I use Jam Transit. They are louder than most devices and have seperate controls for volume and skip but no battery level monitor. They are probably uncomfortable after two hours.

Keep in mind having both ears covered while driving can get you a citation.

Noise cancelling was mentioned and not usually a feature with stereo models.

I haven't found any perfect alternatives.

If you have a aux jack on your stereo, you can get a Bluetooth receiver to plug in there.

The blue tiger headsets look interesting and I wonder if anyone has any feedback on those.

    Regards,

    Mike R

    Hi Rob,

Regarding the fella looking for apps to collect Web articles for later to then get them to read it out loud I use "pocket" (Pocket: Save Articles and Videos to View Later by Read It Later, Inc

https://appsto.re/gb/NscDs.i) for gadget news and "instapaper" (Instapaper by Instapaper Holdings, Inc.

https://appsto.re/gb/4MTmr.i) for other news. Both can save for viewing off-line and readily show up on share-sheets. They both also allow you to control how fast pages are read to you.

Hope he finds this useful but definitely worth checking out.

    Love the show.

    Tosin O

    Hi Rob.

I'm pretty sure that one of your listeners was looking for an app that would read books, PDFs etc.

I don't have this app but I watched a review on another podcast and it looked quite good but a little pricey.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Rob.

(I love the podcast and never miss an episode!)

This is for Gill in Boston who asked about an app to gather web articles and read them aloud in episode 389.

Voice Dream Reader is an excellent app for reading articles and other text, including e-books. You can send articles to it from the share sheet in Safari, stripping out headers and adds if you choose. While reading, it responds to playback control buttons just like an audio player.

I've been using the app for several years. It's great for lots of reasons, not the least of which is how well it copes with bad spelling and OCR formatting errors.

If you get this app, be sure to read the article it comes with describing the features. Some of them are hugely useful things I never would have thought even to look for.

I can't recommend this app highly enough.

Unfortunately, I don't know how well this app works with voiceover as I am not a voiceover user. I have to look at the screen once in a while to add and sort books. Once started, though, it can read through all the books or articles in a playlist without ever leaving my pocket.

    regards,

    Phil W.

    Hi Rob,

For the person in episode 389 looking for an app to read content out loud, voice dream reader is a good app for that. It can read PDF documents, text, webpages etc. there are many high quality voices both free and paid. I am visually impaired and this is an app I use.

    Regards,

    James M

    Hi, Rob!

One person on your latest episode: TII 389 asked about some reading apps that has a web browser that can read your articles out loud.

I use Capti Narrator which is free and Voice Dream Reader which is 10 dollars.

    Have a great day!!

    Regards,

    Maria

    Hi Rob,

A listener asked about text reading apps:

My favorite one of these and I've tried many, is Voice Dream. Lots of different great voices (some of them cost money as in app purchases. But some of them are worth it, because they add more enjoyment or entertainment value to the listening for example, there's a Queen Elizabeth voice). Highly recommended

    Regards,

    Steve

    Hi Rob,

Voice Dream Reader is a fantastic app that can save and read the text from web articles aloud. It's a bit expensive, for an app, but for all that Voice Dream Reader can do, it's worth every cent it costs. And, Voice Dream does more than save web articles. It integrates with Dropbox, iCloud Drive, Pocket, and a few other services. You can even send files to the app through iTunes. It reads plain text, RTF, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Word files. It handles all file types associated with iWork, and it can even play mp3's, for those who enjoy audiobooks. In essence Voice Dream Reader is a complete e-book reader, but its ability to save and read webpages aloud is why I recommended it. The app has had a massive update recently, and it works incredibly well, especially on the iPhone 5S and later. I use this app all the time, and I really love it. Voice Dream Reader is primarily marketed to students and the visually impaired, but anyone can use it and enjoy its features. Hope this info helps in some way.

    Regards,

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from Brian Fitz who posted the following

    Quote

Why do you think Apple is holding dev's back from providing watch faces for the Apple Watch? Seems they could sell more watches if there was more of a selection.

    Unquote

    To which Richard DelFranco replied

    Quote

That's the one thing I want more than anything else, more watch faces. I don't get why they won't do it?

    Unquote

Brian Fitz replied to comments say

    quote

When the Apple Watch was first announced, what got me the most excited was the idea of an unlimited number of watch faces and a ton of battery time to keep those faces visible. Not quite there, but then again it is only the 1st generation. Maybe a jailbreak is what is needed to move things along.

    unquote

To which I say - YEAH - why are there not more watch faces allowed. It makes no sense.  I would love some extra very customize Watch faces.  Maybe the next Watch OS 3.0 will allow it.  Fingers crossed.

Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts and comments in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Folks Go to today in iOS dot com slash community to join in.

And thanks to all 3,000+ of you already in the community and contributing.

Also from the Google Plus community were these comments per the last episode - which I always pin the last episode at the top.

    From Fancisco Tapia

    quote

Rob Walch in response to your question, who wants a thinner phone with a camera bump?

You, and everyone who is pocketing an iPhone 6/6S.

You vote with your $ and Apple was encouraged to continue down this path with the introduction of the new camera bump models. I held out, I bought my SE which is the form factor I had been waiting for. Better battery, no camera bump.

It is difficult at times to say no to those new iOS devices but you only encourage a bad user experience when you keep compromising what you really want over that shiny, new, crazy thin, almost no battery phone.

    unquote

Well the only break in that logic is Apple has no way of knowing what specific feature you did not buy because of.  Just because I purchased something does not mean I have to like every feature.  Now if Apple offered the exact same specs with the only exception being thickness and the camera bump

Thanks to Tash for this next one. WORK IN GoT ref.

Which is about that nasty little bug where if you manually change the date on an iOS to Jan 1st 1970 it would brick your iOS Device.  Kinda of Apples way of saying Time travel is bad. We mentioned that bug a couple of months ago and said don’t do that.

Well now it has been shown that Neir do wells could setup a wifi network where the network time is set to Jan 1st 1970 and if you connect to said network and have your iOS device set to update to network time - you guessed it - A brick your iOS does become.

Now you think - well I just will not connect to said wifi network - well all the hackers have to do is spoof the network name to something like attwifi - which is what you see at starbucks - and when your iPhone see that it will think it is a trusted wifi network and connect and selfdestruct if the date is set to Jan 1st 1970.

So how do you keep this from happening.  Simple update to iOS 9.3.1 -  AND KIDS - don’t try this 1970 hack at home.

From what I read it really does brick the device and even make the temp of the device run real hot - so in that process to becoming a brick - it first becomes a toaster.

Yeah - again not something you want to try to see what happens or do to your friends iOS device as a joke.

And oh yeah - if you have not updated to 9.3.1 - you really want to - and you want to ASAP - especially if you travel a lot or have friends that think when you are sleeping on the coach in mid day - it is ok to light off an m-80 to wake you up type friends.

    ticking-time-bombs-should-buy-one/

There were a few mis-reported stories out there about iPhones dying.

One such title was quote Apple Says iPhones are Ticking Time Bombs: Should You Still Buy One? unquote from Dazeinfo.com

It seems some of these articles latched on to this one quote in Apples Recycling docs.

    quote

“Years of use, which are based on first owners, are assumed to be four years for OS X and tvOS devices and three years for iOS and watchOS devices,”

    unquote

First saying that the original owners of iOS devices is 3 years for the first owner - is not saying they die in 3 years it is just saying people that buy new iOS devices on average upgrade to a new device in 3 years.  Most of you listening have an iOS device that is well over 3 years old - some like me have the original iPhone which is still working.

Additionally they tried in the article to say Apple is killing iOS devices with software updates.  First not true.  But second at least Apple has software updates.  The iPhone 4S is still supported and it was released in October 2011 - that is 5 1/2 years ago - and oh yeah it is still supported with new updates.  There are no Android devices a year younger still be officially supported with the latest updates - NONE.

It is just funny the articles that ran with this story tried to either say the devices died in 3 years or were obsoleted in 3 years.  Which is just not the case.

    http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/apple-has-secret-team-working-

    major-app-store-changes-including-paid-search-feature-1554985

There was rumor from IBtimes out of the UK - that says

    quote

Apple has a secret team working on bringing potential changes to the App Store. As many as 100 employees including engineers from the company's advertising group iAd are working on the project,

Apple is considering paid search, a model that Google is already using, wherein developers would have to pay to have their app shown at the top of the search results.

    unquote

My initial reaction is nope - not going to happen.

Not Paid search.  I don’t see Apple sullying up the user experience like that.

To this point Apple has proudly and strongly pointed out that there is no Pay for placement in iTunes - not for Music, not for Podcasts, not for TV shows or movies and not for Apps.  Apple has teams of people curating content in the different categories for featured picks and uses algorithms for top charts and search results.

So Now all of a sudden Apple is going to turn on Paid advertising so companies with crappy apps that could not get their app to the top of charts via merit can pay their way to the top - and thus have users downloading and buying crap apps from people with large budgets for advertising.  HMMMM - Were in all of that does the end user benefit??

Maybe I am wrong - but when I listen to my little birds that is not when they are saying.  I just don’t see Apple making such a big pivot and one that does not help the end user and really likely will hurt the end user.

Paid Advertising makes sense when your customers are the advertisers - paid advertising does not make sense when your customers are the end users.  Just Sayin

    leaked-schematics-a-disappointing-september/

A Japanese site posted what is supposed to be schematics of the next iPhone - iPhone 7+

The schematics show a dual camera module, No Headphone jack - and just one speaker - no the dual speakers that had been rumors.

Essentially the iPhone 7+ looks a lot lot like the iPhone 6+ and 6S+ - actually it has identical dimensions. with the exception of the dual camera and no headphone jack and possibly the smart connector.

And for some reason people don’t seem to be getting excited by a new iPhone where the biggest innovation will be the removal of the head phone jack.  Psssst - Apple - that is not a feature - that is a hassle.  Nothing like giving iPhone users a reason NOT to update this year.

    Hi Rob,

For the person in episode 389 that was looking for an email application that can perform a select all messages, Microsoft outlook is a good app for that.

    Regards,

    James

    Rob,

So, the Apple Store app received an update. It now supports 3-D touch. This is fine, but am I crazy for wondering why it still does not support touch ID?

    Kevin Barry

No - no you are not crazy for wondering that. It make no sense that your finger print is not as important as your four digit passcode.  If anything when you have not used your device in a while and want to buy something it should require your finger print - not your 4 digit passcode.

    Hi Rob,

Hope this finds you well. I was just curious if you were still using the Bumpies on your iPhone; I believe you have/had them on a 6 Plus.

I’m seriously considering them since I broke the screen on my employer’s 6 Plus; not good. :)

    Thanks

    Regards

    Scott

YES - still using them and loving them.

I do recommend you also use a glass screen protector as well - because well with any case if you drop something on the screen it can still crack.  Bumpies save you from when you drop it.

Recently when I was flying - I was using the Wallet app with the boarding pass for Southwest and the person checking tickets asked what the white things were for in the corner and I said it is the case and she asked what they were called and thought they were neat.

    Hi Rob,

I found there are a few different screen protectors out there that apparently is comparable to the one offered by Bumpies. I’ll at least get the BUmpies on the phone. The funny part about breaking the screen is whether it was the dog’s skull or the tiled floor. LOL

I was in training with a new Seeing Eye dog, a male German Shepherd, who has a pretty big head. The phone bounced off his head and hit the floor. :)

    Thanks again.

    probably-the-best-iphone-camera-grip-ever-b

Thanks to the multiple people that sent in this next one - which is for the Kickstarter Project called Pictar - spelled P I C T A R

What does Pictar do you ask - well they say it will quote Unleash the power of your iPhone's camera for much better pictures, time after time! unquote.

Initially this was not for the iPhone 6+ and 6S+ - but the goal of $150k unlocked that option - so now this is for every iPhone from the iPhone 4 and later.

This one had a goal of 100,000 dollars - Had being key word - they are over 170k and growing.

You have until May 27th at 2:00 AM CT to fund this one if interested.  Which if you are - man you get interested easy.

Mainly I say that because I have not really said what it does.

The actual title of the project is

PICTAR. Probably the best iPhone camera-grip ever built

It is not a case as much as a hand held Grip / dock where

you insert Your iPhone and then have access to buttons on the grip for

    Shutter Release

    Exposure compensation wheel

    Smart wheel

    Zoom Ring

    Selfie Button

And it has a cold shoe mount and a tripod mount

If you are a photog - you will really want to check this out.

PRICING ON THIS WOULD BE $90 for all except the 6+ and 6S+ models which are $100.

Looks like shipping in Nov 2016.

To find this just search for Pictar - P I C T A R at kickstarter dot com.

    battery-strap-accessory

Thanks to Aric for this next one. Which is kinda sad.

There was a watch strap we talked about in the past that’s supposed to use the hidden connector on the Apple Watch to supply extra battery life from batteries in the strap of the watch itself - essentially doubling the battery life of the Apple watch.

The Reserve Strap is the name and ep 357 was the ep we talked about it - at the time I said

    quote

At $99 I would pull the trigger right away but at $250 - I am going to have to wait until they are shipping and hear how it goes

    unquote

And well it seems Apple has shut down this project by locking down the hidden connector functionality in a recent Watch OS update.

Or as the Reserve Strap team said

    quote

In recent WatchOS releases, Apple made the decision to remove all functionality from Apple Watch’s accessory port thereby blocking Reserve Strap’s ability to charge the Apple Watch. This was a deviation from how the port functioned in all previous WatchOS releases and appears to have been a deliberate effort to block development of third party smartbands.

    unquote

Or but another way - I saved $250 by not preordering one.

Again sad news - hopefully Apple unblocks the use of that port.

    cases/ipad-pro-case.html

I am starting to use my IPad Pro more and more - and the uptick usage really started right when I received my STM iPad Pro Dux case.  This is a $60 case from STM for the 12.9” iPad that has a great holder for the Appel Pencil and gives it protections from drops as well - and best part it works with the Apple Smart Keyboard case. And the back of the case is transparent - so it protects the iPad Pro - but still lets you see its beauty.

Once I was able to have the pencil with me and not worry about dropping it - I have been using it a bunch more and letting the kids use it a bunch more.

When I use it for meetings I like going split screen - especially when taking notes at said meetings - I put the notes app on the left - and Pages on the right - and then the Notes I want to reference during the meeting are in Pages on the right - and the notes I am taking at the meeting are on the left.

I have had more than a few people ask me about the case this past month - as I have been traveling with it.

I want to Thank STM for sending it to me to review.  Guys - great great job.

I really love the STM products for Laptop bags and iPad cases.  My Wifes iPad Mini is in an STM case and she loves it - would not me even try another one I was sent.

    VOICEMAIL -

    Rob,

I wanted to share two different things I submitted to apple feedback because I wonder who else has these issues:

    1. Regarding the music app on my phone:

Many, many times, I have had a problem/bug when I sync with iTunes. I have album artwork for almost all of my music. I have a large music library- about 60+ GB.

I will have all the artwork correctly in the music app on my phone, then when I sync with iTunes, it will disappear. This is not a pleasant experience. I don't understand why it would happen, because the artwork is already on the phone. That doesn't need to be synced. This has occurred over many versions of iOS, OS X and iTunes.

    2. Also regarding the music app on my phone:

I almost want to buy an Android phone every time I do a search in the music app. It's slightly maddening that it always defaults to searching iTunes music instead of my library. It feels like Apple is trying to sell me something every time I wanna find a song that I own. I don't subscribe to Apple Music and don't have a desire to. I have plenty of music. I have to manually toggle the search results to my library each time. Please, please give me the option to change the default so that it goes to my personal music library when I do a search in the music app.

I know the Android comment was harsh. I just wanted to convey the gravity of the situation.

So, Rob, have you or any TII listeners had either of these issues? I'd love to know. Also, if so, please let apple know at apple.com/feedback because many voices are more likely to be heard.

    Kind Regards,

    Tracy

    Hey Rob!

I work for a news station in Las Vegas and I was wondering if you know of any app for my specific need.  We get daily Nielsen ratings for my station and every other in town. I was wondering if there is an app where I can log each daily rating and get a number of different averages.  For example overall averages or even say averages on specific days like Mondays or Wednesdays.

    Thanks for the help!

    Regards,

    Roger in Vegas.

    http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/21/politics/san-

    bernardino-iphone-apple-hacking/index.html

Comey The FBI Director said that they paid more money to have the San Bernadino’s Terrorists phone unlocked then he will make during the rest of his career - which is estimated to be over $1.3 Million dollars.  So if you hear of reports of the FBI paying over $1 Mil to get that iPhone 5C hacked there is where it comes from.  He did not actually say how much - so it could be more a lot more or it could be right at $1 Mil or less and Comey is just bad at math.

In any case now that it is unlocked what did the FBI learn.  Well initial reports were that the FBI was able to gather valuable information from the phone.  What was said information - well it appears it was that there was nothing on the phone of value.

But wait how can nothing - zip - nadda info at all be valuable you ask.  Simple according to the FBI - by now knowing there was nothing on the phone - that knowledge and confirmation is valuable in that they can focus elsewhere.  Ummmmm Yeah.  I tried to put a good analogy together on this.  And here is the best I could find.  Lets says you purchased a Scratch off lottery ticket with the chance to win $10 Mil dollars - but never scratched it off and it was in a wallet of yours that was locked in a safe which you lost the combo.  And a lock smith said they would charge you $1.3 Mil to unlock it.  Well rather than having to wonder if it really is a $10 mil winning ticket and face a life of uncertainty about said ticket - you go ahead and pay the $1.3 mil to have the safe open - to scratch off the ticket and find you did not even win another free ticket.  Nope Nothing - zip - Nadda - but that is ok - because now you know there was not a winning lottery ticket in said safe and you can sleep at night not having to wonder - and that is how the FBI justifies the time / energy and resources spent on the great FBI v Apple debacle.

    Hi Rob,

Just wanted to say a big thank you to you for being such a great advocate for the blind and visually impaired.

Although I do not know as to what your level of visual acuity may be, I as well many others who are blind or visually impaired feel that you really understand the unique challenges we face in our daily lives when it comes to accessing our iOS devices.

Being visually impaired myself, it means so much to me to know we have someone such as yourself who puts our issues front and center.

So for that, I would like to say Thank you!

Also, I wanted to let you know that I have taken on a board member position - 2nd VP of our local CCB (Canadian Council of the Blind) chapter.  Since I will have an active role in the group, my plan is to promote technologies to our members here in Newfoundland and across Canada.  On the top of my priorities will be to let members know about your great podcast as well as the Google TII community.

Keep up the great work.  I am so looking forward to episode 390/391.

    All the best!

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote

The forthcoming (June 29) release of the Apple iPhone is going to be a bigger marketing flop than Ishtar and Waterworld combined. Because its designers forgot Platt’s First, Last, and Only Law of User Experience Design (“Know Thy User, for He Is Not Thee”), that product is going to crash in flames. Apple has put out iOS 9.3.2 beta 1 to devs and the public beta testers.

As with most double Dot updates it is about squashing bugs.

But it does look like it improves quick actions when in landscape mode on an iPhone 6S with none of the jitter or lag present in other versions of iOS 9.3

One thing it is believed iOS 9.3.2 has a new Kernel that may patch a kernel bug used for jailbreaks.

So obviously if you are a jailbreaker - you will not want to update to 9.3.2 once it is released.

    passcode-a6969331.html

Last week there were a bunch of reports about a bug in the current public version of iOS - where anyone could access the Phones Photos and contacts.  Well with some caveats.

The bug relied on 3D touch - which means only iPhone 6S and 6S+ were affected and it was only with iOS 9.3.1

The trick required using Siri and asking her to search twitter and doing so with the right terms can bring up contacts data like an email address or phone number and then 3D touch feature could be used to bring up a menu allowing people to use that data - all with out unlocking the device.  And then clicking on Add to existing contact - allowed people to get into the contacts app and scroll through info.  And from there users can click change the photo of a given person which brought up the photo library.

And I speak in Past tense - because just like that Apple Squashed this bug and they did so on the server side of Siri - which means no update required for the end users.

So if you hear of someone talking about this - it is no longer an issue.

I mentioned on the last episode about the T-Mobile special for MLB.tv - I hope all you baseball fans were able to get signed up for that offering.  I was and am loving it the MLB At bat App.

Most of the time games are blacked out if I am home - but when away from KC - it worked well - and I have more travel coming up - plus it works great from Mets games too.

And I need to Thank to Chris in London for this next one.  Which is baseball related and siri related.  Siri can now answer more of your baseball related questions.  Seems Siri’s baseball IQ was increased a bunch.

So you could ask something like - how many home runs did babe ruth have in a given season or ever - and she will read the answer - but get away from the main stream players - like asking how many home runs did ed kranepool have - and she will give you a search result to look at.

    push-to-flood-india-with-used-iphones-ignites-

    backlash?cmpid=yhoo.headline

When it comes to India - Apple had a plan on how to get more adoption for iOS - and that plan involved refurbished lower cost iPhones.  But with any plan - sometimes things do not go as anticipated.

Seems some powers that be in India also have a plan and their plan is to keep Apple’s plan from happening. As some local Indian cell phone manufactures threw Apple a googly and said India should not be a dumping ground for used iPhones.

4/5th’s of the phones sold in India cost less than $150 US dollars - and you can get smartphones for as little as $35 US dollars.

Right now Apples application to import into India refurbished lower cost iPhones is under government review.  But it seems right now the manufacturing base in India is pushing the government NOT to allow Apple to import in their iPhones without a stiff 300% tariff.  Ouch.

Unless there is a ground swell of Indian consumers that push back at the manufacturing segment - it is very likely Apple’s plans to bring refurbished phones to India will not come to be.

Apples Quarterly conference call will be Monday April 25th at 2:00 PM PT - and sadly this will be the first one I miss live in a long time because the Day job will have me traveling that week and in a meeting at that exact same time. Arrrgggg. I will listen later that evening and do a blog post once I get the details - and an episode later that week.  Don’t think I will get one done that night - but maybe if I am lucky.

It will be very interesting to see if iPhone SE sales numbers are even hinted at.  smart money says no.

The Analists will be tripping over themselves the next couple of weeks to give their predictions on iPhone and iPad sales.

Put us in the camp that thinks highly of the SE. We absolutely would have purchased at least one of them, if we weren't only 6 months into AT&T Next 24 for an iPhone 5S. Doh!! I wish we had any idea about the SE, we would have waited for it. Very glad they made it a peer to the 6s, rather than year-old tech. We agree with you, it should do well!

    Hi Rob,

I just got done listening to show 388 and I’m still stuck on Walt Mossberg’s no. 1 out of the 7 wish list items for the iPhone that concern increased battery life.  I absolutely agree with Walt that many of us would gladly trade thinness for greater battery life.  The problem is that Apple doesn’t seem to want to oblige with the 6s.  Can you or the listeners please explain to me this irrational obsession and fetish that Apple seems to have with thinness?  I don’t get it.  What am I missing?  What does a nearly paper thin iPhone do for me?  Is there some aesthetic beauty in extreme thinness that only Apple can see?  There’s no beauty in having to recharge a $700 anorexic smart phone more than once a day or adding a $100 ugly as sin battery case to compensate.  This seems very un-Apple to me.  For the love of iPhones, Apple, just put more battery in the phone already!  Who cares if it’s a little thicker?!  For the premium price Apple charges for the 6S, we should expect form and function, not form over function.  Thank you, Walt, for calling Apple out on this.  I will stick with my thick, beautiful 5S until I decide to upgrade to a new, equally thick and beautiful SE.  Sorry 6S, but I like a little meat on the bones.  The 5S and SE have got you beat.

On the nights I record the kids go sleep with mom - and I go and sleep in my Son’s Casper bed.  Kind of my reward for a long night getting out the show.

Casper Mattresses are a mix of Latex foam and Memory foam. No noisy springs to wake up your significant other when you get up to sneak a snack in the middle of the night or in my case when I slip in late at night.

And with Casper you get a 100 day risk free trial period.  You don't like it you get your money back and they come and pick it back up and donate it to a charity.

But just as important as quality is Pricing and the pricing is really great.   Twin Mattresses are just $500, they also have Twin XL for $600, Full for $750, Queen for $850 and then King and Cal King - for  $950.  That is less much much less than my iPad Pro setup.  And as I said you have 100 days to return it risk free. And if you go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code tii - you will save $50 off those prices -   Terms and Conditions Apply.

This is an american made mattress with delivery right now for the US and Canada only and it is free delivery. And When said mattress is delivered - it is from UPS - in a squarish box that you think no way is there a mattress in there - But you get a cool little tool to cut open the package and the mattress opens up and expands to form.  It is really cool Just google Casper Mattress unboxing.

And with Apple TV the HBO Now App and Game of Thrones binge watching for the past seasons - you know you are going to spend more than a 1/3 rd of your life in bed - is it not worth getting the best nights sleep possible - and that is what you will get with Casper.  Again to Save $50 off of the prices I mentioned go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code t i i - all lower case on the promo code.  again casper dot com / tii - promo code tii to save $50 - thanks Casper for the great mattress for my show nights and for sponsoring this show.

And Steve is talking about Apples recent update with regards to its policy on audiobook downloads.  If you purchased an audiobook directly from Apple - you can now redownload said audiobooks - Apparently this change was made back in Early March.  Audiobooks are now listed in a customers iBooks purchase history and can be redownloaded just like a standard eBook or is it iBook.

    http://money.cnn.com/2016/03/28/technology/new-

    iphone/index.html

Some new rumors about future iPhones - these are coming from Ming-Chi Kuo - who the article says is more often right than wrong - well not exactly - but if you hit 300 in baseball it is considered good - you hit that in Apple rumors and it is great.

The rumor starts off with Apple going back to a glass sandwich - with Glass on top and bottom - but this time the glass is curved and meets at the sides.  The screen size would increase on the Plus or Pro version from 5.5” to 5.8” because yes we need another screen size to make the lives of devs even more confusing.

Wireless charging would be added as well.

The screen would go to AMOLED

Kuo also says the new iPhone will have better biometric security implementing facial recognition.  And if they add infrared cameras you could even unlock your phone in the dark.  But hey if you want to unlock it in the winter and you are wearing a mask - good luck with that.  But Apple did recently acquire facial recognition specialist Emotient and real-time 3D rendering firm Faceshift - because if you are going to do facial recognition you need to do it 3D - otherwise people could just use your photo.

Now the more interesting thing - this new radically different iPhone will not be out until 2017.

Note in the past Kou said the iPhone would not go to AMOLED until 2019.  So that contradicts his past claim.

Which would mean the iPhone 2016 would be the same basic design as the iPhone 6 series with just under the hood improvements.  One of which might be a flush camera - as seen in that Apple liam video - if you are into that story that Apple goofed and had the next iPhone in the video theory.

    http://watchaware.com/post/16858/rumor-apple-watch-2-

    predicted-to-debut-at-wwdc-will-be-up-to-40-thinner

Remember those rumors about a new Apple Watch being announced at an Apple event in March - yeah - those rumors are rising from the dead and now have a new Apple Watch being introduced at WWDC.  According to Apple Anal-ist Brian White the Apple Watch 2nd gen will be thinner.

    Quote

Finally, we walked away with the sense that the Apple Watch refresh will not occur in September with the iPhone 7, but is more likely to occur within the next 2-3 months, and thus we believe an unveiling at WWDC in June makes sense. We believe Apple Watch 2 could be 20-40% thinner than the current Apple Watch.

    Unquote

Here is a thought - How about keeping the same profile for the Apple watch and just make the battery life 2 to 3 times as good.

White also said the next gen iPhone Plus size will feature a dual camera.

    21:54

    http://www.slashgear.com/iphone-7-rumors-may-make-you-

    replace-your-android-12435844/

Additional rumors for the iPhone 2016 have the antenna band moving down closer to the bottom and top of the iPhone - and for the Pro or plus size - the addition of speakers at the top and bottom - going with 4 stereo speakers and no head phone jack.

And the next gen iPhones would get thinner - between 6 and 6.5 MM.  To which we all go - WHY? WHY go thinner - go thicker and give us much better battery life.

Really is there anyone out there that would choose a 6 MM iPhone with a camera bump and 6 hours of real life usage over an 8 MM iPhone no camera bump and with 12 hours of real life usage?  Anyone - Please raise your hand - and then use said hand to smack your self silly or sillier.

If a new design is coming in the fall - then the number of photos leaking of said iPhone should really start picking up this month and next.

    apple-is-an-arms-dealer-analyst-claims.html

Intersting article from Johnny Evans at Computerworld - with regards to a report from Laura Martin an Anal-ist at Neenham & Company.  She was doing a deep dive into Apple and said the company is very undervalued - putting her price target at $150.

She said Wallstreet is valuing it today like just a hardware manufacturer - where as it should be looked at more like as Media company one that sells and experience not just a piece of hardware.

One item to point out from Laura Martin is this

    quote

“Finally, with 24,000 active Android smartphones on the market globally, we think Android is a victim of a “tyranny of choice,” which confuses consumers and works against Android, especially at the high end. AAPL benefits from far simpler choice sets, typically three to six choices/device.”

    unquote

Ouch 24,000 different and active Android handsets - ouch ouch ouch.

What is odd in the report - while she put a $150 price target on Apple - she said depending on how you look at the company its real value is from a low of $168 a share looking at simply Profit per device over time to a high of $200 a share - if you look at the income statement and Balance sheet fundamental.

In other words her $150 target is lower than what she currently sees as the real value of the company.

    Hey Rob,

I couldn't agree more. Just yesterday, I was playing around on my co-workers Galaxy S7 Edge and I said to him almost exactly what you said; "The is the first Samsung/Android phone that I have ever really been impressed with."

I know the wrap around edge screen is a bit of a gimmick and will more than likely be a short-lived thing that apple won't ever try to pursue, but I would be lying if I said it didn't make for a really enjoyable, more immersive screen viewing experience.

Thanks for the show Rob, keep up the good work.

    Hey Rob,

Sometimes I see an article online that I find worth reading, but I don't have time to read through the whole article at the time. I think, "gee, I'd like to listen to this article if I could, like in the car ride on the way home. It would only take a minute to copy the text, paste it into a word processor, save as a text file, and email to myself, then open in the text-reader app on my iphone on the drive to work tomorrow."

Is there a good app that does this sort of thing? When I looked in the app store, all I found were apps for speaking short bits of text, like as an aid for people with laryngitis.

It would also be nice to even have something that when I have an online web article that has a text view option, that I can branch from there to have it read out loud to me by this app.

Any suggestions from you or your listeners?

    Regards,

    Gil in Boston

    Hi Rob

I've been looking for a reliable way to take written notes that can be recognised and converted to text for a long time now. I'm visually impaired so taking notes using the on-screen keyboard is not easy unless using Voiceover but this can't be done privately unless using earphones

Two days before replacing my Ipad Air 2 with a 9.7" Pro, I found the MyScript Stylus app. This replacement keyboard allows me to write normally and the recognition is better than anything else that I've tried. Now with the Apple Pencil, i've got exactly what I've been looking for. It does work with a normal stylus or a finger on the Iphone too. Text entry is now so quick and simple.

I really hope that the next Iphone supports the Apple Pencil too.

I know that many of your listeners and also visually impaired and I really think they might like to know about this app.

This one HAD a modest goal of $10k and has just reached said goal with funding going on until May 9th 2016 at 11:21 PM CT. Congrats team DEW DOCK.

Pricing for this multi device dock is $79 with delivery set for July 2016.

    Hi Rob,

Love the podcast. Regarding the lack of sufficient wattage supplied by the 12w charger provided, one does not need to buy the new Lightning to USB C Camera Adapter and the 29w power supply for the Macbook in order to continuously run and charge the 12.9 inch iPad Pro. Last year, I happened to by a Photive 50 Watt 6 Port USB Charger, an "intelligent" charger. It senses the current draw from the device and ramps up accordingly. I had been charging various iOS and other devices for months without a problem. I now use the Photive 50watt charger all day with my iPad Pro 12.9, without a problem or any damage. Keeps the charge topped off nicely. This $25 solution foregoes the need for the camera adapter and additional power supply, which is $80, and offers 5 more intelligent ports of power. The new version is 60watts max. and costs only $25.

    Hello,

Does anyone know of an email application that allows you to do a search over the email and then do a "select all" to those search results to then archive them? This is a workflow that I've loved doing on the Mac for years and I would love to be able to do it on my phone. Thanks anyone for the help in advance.

    Regards,

    Hi Rob,

I installed the TVos update and paired my Apple bluetooth keyboard to the ATV4 with no problem at all. That was the end of the good news. From the Artist list I try typing the first few letters of an artist name and...nothing. Same thing in movies and tv shows. I connected the bluetooth keyboard to my ATV3 and it worked as expected. Typing "nor" in the artist list jumps to "Norah Jones”.

    Hi Rob

If I have 10 subscribed podcasts on my iPhone and 3 on my iPad and then in settings on both devices, I turn on sync podcasts, will what is on the iPad match up with what's on the iPhone or vice versa? Meaning will I end up with 10 podcasts on both devices or 3?

    Regards

    Steve

You should end up with 10 podcasts on both devices.

    Hi Rob.

Something I noticed about MLB.TV for Apple TV 4th gen vs. the 2015 Fire TV...  Apple claims this to be running at 60fps.  MLB.TV looks waaaaaaay smoother to me on the Fire TV. I tested this on two different TVs using the same HDMI cable. Is this because the Fire TV has better internals?  You would think the Apple TV 4 could pull this off just as nicely.  I'm very disappointed because I'm using a service called Unlocator to avoid being blacked out for my Brewer games. It works great on the Apple TV, but not the Fire TV. I just wish the Apple TV 4 looked as smooth.

    Regards,

    Oshkosh Josh

    Hi again Rob,

Apparently reinstalling MLB at bat for Apple TV 4 will make it 60fps.

Here's what went wrong. Apparently MLBTV didn't release the 60fps feature until the start of the season, as in game one of the season. I was one of the ones who bought an  TV and didn't update the firmware with the hopes of a jailbreak. I ALSO had my app updates turned off. All I had to do was update the MLBTV app and boom, 60fps.

So happy right now!  Go Brewers!!!

    Regards,

    Oshkosh Josh

PLAY CLIP - Thank you sir can I have another.

On the last episode I referred to the Apple v FBI fight as a post-script - meaning the battle was over - but well as that clip I just played goes - it seems the FBI would like another.  As they are not giving up on their fight to get Apple to unlock iPhones - and keeping the case in NY alive - that is one where a Meth Dealer - who already pleaded guilty has his phone in the hands of law enforcement - and wants Apple to hack it for them.  This is one that the Judge has said the DOJ’s claim that the Writts Act applies is was questionable at best.

    39:58

    http://money.cnn.com/2016/04/07/technology/fbi-iphone-

    hack-san-bernardino/index.html

The FBI has said that to get into the Phone of the Terrorist in CA - they purchased a tool from a private party.  Seems someone on the FBI team was just browsing through B&H photo site and just found this 3rd party software called Hack an iPhone - and put it in its cart and the reason for the delay from december until now was that the clerk in the FBI that found it back in December was waiting for the PO to be approved.  Ok - maybe not 100% exactly how it happened.

According to FBI directory Comey quote

"The people we bought this from, I know a fair amount about them, and I have a high degree of confidence that they are very good at protecting it, and their motivations align with ours,”

    unquote

He also went on to say it only works on a narrow segment of iPhone and that does not include any devices since the 5S and the Government is currently considering if it should tell Apple how the Phone was exploited.

    From Comey

    Quote

"We tell Apple, then they're going to fix it, then we're back where we started from, We may end up there, we just haven't decided yet.” unquote

If this only works on a small segment of iPhones comment is true - then most will not need to be patched - but still if you are Apple you are going to try your darnedest to find out what said exploit is.

    Hi Rob,

The FBI tell us they managed to crack an iPhone. Well, did they ?  we only have their word for that. They haven't exactly got a good track record for telling the truth. So when are they going to produce the evidence?

    encrypted-phones-just-got-worse/

Thanks to Chris in London for this next one.

And it is a post with the pithy title -

quote Remember that California bill to ban the sale of encrypted phones? It just got worse unquote

California Assembly Member Jim Cooper Democrat from the 9th district - just introduced a new state legislation that would require any new smartphones from 2017 onwards to be quote  capable of being decrypted and unlocked by its manufacturer or its operating system provider.  unquote

The new bill mandates the ability to decrypt not just new phone sales - but any phone already out there.

The new bill also changed from fining manufacturers for each sale of a new device to a $2,500 fine for each time a device cannot be accessed by law enforcement.

Of course the bill still has a few steps to become a law - like first passing through the assembly and then the state senate and then actually being signed by the Governor of California.

Which means - lots of opportunities for Politicians looking for campaign contributions to publicly say they are not sure when way they are leaning and then wait for the funds to come in from Apple or MS other tech companies and then vote against it. Not that our Government system is up for sale or anything - I mean that would be a very cynical look at government.

    whatsapp-encryption-2/

Thanks to Tosin O for this next one - which is one way for the bad guys or those that just want to avoid 1984 to get around stupid laws about encryption - just get the WhatsApp.  WhatsApp announced it is turning on end to end encryption to make it basically impossible to eavesdrop on your communication.

As of right now via the WhatsApp - ALL text messages, photo and video attachments, documents, voice messages and VoIP calls are protected with full end-to-end encryption

Also since the encryption keys are stored on the user device - Whats App cannot decrypt chats even if they wanted to or were forced to try by a government.

From Whatsapp founder Jan Koum quote “From now on when you and your contacts use the latest version of the app, every call you make, and every message, photo, video, file and voice message you send is end-to-end encrypted by default, including group chats, unquote

WhatsApp is owned now by Facebook.

    From their press release

    quote

The idea is simple: when you send a message, the only person who can read it is the person or group chat that you send that message to. No one can see inside that message. Not cybercriminals. Not hackers. Not oppressive regimes. Not little finger and Not even us. End-to-end encryption helps make communication via WhatsApp private – sort of like a face-to-face conversation.

    Hi Rob,

I found the name of the analyst quoted by Al Ries of AdAge as as saying "The iPhone has the potential to be even bigger than the iPod,”

It was Gene Munster, an analyst with Piper Jaffray, as quoted further in this article:

"Apple And Amazon: Nothing In Common”

    http://247wallst.com/investing/2007/04/27/apple_and_amazo/

'And, Apple analysts think it will get even better: "The iPhone has the potential to be even bigger than the iPod," says Gene Munster, an analyst with Piper Jaffray. "The cellphone market is gigantic.”’

    Hope that answers that question.

    Keep up the good work,

    Hi Rob,

I love your show and listen to every episode as soon as I can after it comes out. Based on the long life of your podcast, I am a relative newbie having listened about 4 years.

I wanted to talk to you about the term waterproof, which you use from time-to-time, in regards to the Apple Watch.

Basically, there is no such thing as waterproof. Though it is used in consumer electronics, it is vague and without real meaning. Water resistant is a more accurate term. Nothing is waterproof to an infinite depth. Even submarines have a crush depth (I pity the sailors that experience this form of demise).

The Apple Watch uses the IEC standard 60529, which is used for consumer electronics, and is rated IPX7. This means no water ingress in a “harmful quantity” for 30 minutes at 1 meter. The highest level of water resistance on this scale is IPX9K which means protected against high pressure, high temperature spray downs (Water volume: 14–16 litres per minute Pressure: [8000–10000 kPa / 80–100 Bar] at distance of 0.1– 0.15 m Water temperature: 80 °C).

If not a smart watch, watchmakers use a different set of standards, ISO 2281 water resistant watches standard and ISO 6425 divers’ watches standard. ISO 2281 prohibits the use of the term waterproof. The Apple Watch does not use these standards as, it appears, it is considered more of an electronic device than watch.

So, the term waterproof is vague and poorly defined. We can say at certain depth for a certain period of time a watch is waterproof but I think this is imprecise/misleading. Water resistant is more accurate. And even this is deceiving as it is not practical for use of a watch at a given depth but just for the device to sit in “static” water. Perhaps valuable if you drop your watch but not for water based activities. A watch/device will never be truly waterproof because pressure can be increased infinitely and at some point, the casing will fail.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading. My two cents against the use of the term waterproof.

    Keep up the great work.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote

When Apple introduces its iPhone this month, will it pass the acid test?  In my opinion, no.  The iPhone will be a major disappointment.  The hype has been enormous. Apple says its iPhone is "literally five years ahead of any other mobile phone." A stock-market analyst says, "The iPhone has the potential to be even bigger than the iPod. I think not.”  unquote

Al Ries, AdAge Blogs, 18 June 2007

First I want to know the name of that Analyst that got it right - sadly no reference to whom that was.

But this just goes to show you 9 years ago how negative sentiment was about the iPhone in general - this guy was writing for AdAge - typically that industry was pro Apple.  Right now I am seeing a bunch of negative articles about the SE or if not negative pretty much dismissive - but feedback from you the listeners has been showing a lot of people ordering the SE.  Will be interesting to see at the end of the month - how the Apple Conference call goes and if they mention the SE.

This episode is a little late because last week I was at Microsoft Build in San Francisco - That is MS version of WWDC.  MS invited me out - actually they flew me out and put me up for the event.  YES I have been doing this show now for 9 years and MS is the one that has me come out to cover their developer event first - NOT Apple.  Hey Friends in Cupertino - are you listening - or Just Sayin.  They also brought out Joshua from Android Authority and the folks from iPhreaks.  So Yes MS is definitely looking to reach out to devs from multiple platforms.  In Future episodes I will be playing some of the interviews I recorded.  I will say this I learned a lot at the event and it definitely showed me some great tools for Devs for iOS Apps regardless of what language you are using to develop in.  And before the event If you asked me what language to use to develop iOS apps - I would have said Swift and Swift and oh yeah Swift.  Now I can see where it really does depend a bit on your experience and the goals of that app - More on that in future episodes when I play some of those interviews.

Thanks MS for the invite,  the very warm welcome and the education.

Oh and just incase anyone in Cupertino is curious - yes - Yes I am available to come out in June to cover WWDC.

    http://fortune.com/2016/03/28/ios-bug-apps-freeze-iphone/

On the Last episode with regards to updating iOS 9.3 I said the following.

Quote iOS 9.3 is available today.  Should you download it today - I say wait a few days - just because of everyone else downloading it.  Most Likely iOS 9.3 GM will be the most stable - bug free Single dot update ever - thanks to the 7 beta - most likely that is - so that is another reason to wait a week.  Lets make sure it is ok.  unquote

Ummm - Yeah - If you had an Older iOS device - you are probably glad you listened to that advice - as iOS 9.3 definitely did have issues for some.  Not all - not most - but some - and that some seemed to be on older iOS devices where the update would hang and not let you update if you did not have your old password.  In some cases sudo bricking the phones.

Apple acknowledged that issue, saying that it was working on a fix to address the activation error.  And actually then did deliver said fix.  So one issue down.

Others and this is actually a more wide spread issue are reporting issues with links not working in apps to open Safari.  Or links also not working in Safari.

    Quote

a number of iPhone and iPad users found Safari, Mail, Messages, Notes, Chrome and some other pre-installed and third-party apps would crash or freeze after tapping or long pressing on a web link.

    unquote

    http://www.technobuffalo.com/2016/03/31/ios-9-3-1-out-

    now-heres-everything-thats-new/

And then Apple released iOS 9.3.1 - and the second major issue with 9.3 was fixed or so it is reported by Apple.

According to Apples changelog, iOS 9.3.1  Quote Fixes an issue that caused apps81b6f2c7040331b20f6e3bf3ab848d65.png to be unresponsive after tapping on links in Safari on other apps. unquote

I personally noticed an issue where with 9.3 I lost connection to my Apple Watch and had to reboot the phone to finally get that connect back.  Maybe it was a one time thing - but it was first time since I had the Apple Watch I can remember having to do that.

So yes - even 7 Betas were not enough to get rid of all the issues - and hence why I always recommend you wait a week or so before updating.

Obviously if you updated to 9.3 - it is best to now update to 9.3.1.  And if you were one that is on something prior to 9.3 - it does look good for you now to update to 9.3.1 as well.

    http://www.computerworld.com/article/3050022/apple-ios/ios-

    9-3-is-apple-s-most-stable-ios-yet-data-claims.html

Johnny Evans had a post titled - quote iOS 9.3 is Apple’s most stable iOS yet, data claims unquote.

What you say - But Rob - you just went over two major bugs in iOS 9.3 - Yes - Yes I did.

But as Johnny points out - quote These bugs were quite annoying, but didn’t affect everybody and for most people the new iOS has been problem-free. unquote

And he then quotes the Company - Apteligent - formerly known as criticism -  quote “OS 9.3 is Apple’s largest mid-cycle release in a long time, Despite this bug, iOS 9.3 stands as Apple’s most stable new release in years. unquote

And then they showed data to back that up - showing where the average crash rate over the past eight days was 2.2% for iOS 9.3 - which they showed was by far the most stable iOS version.

And quote The rate at which apps crash on all Android versions continues to exceed that of the relatively crash-free iOS ecosystem.  unquote

Not surprising on that factoid.  So yes iOS 9.3 was not perfect - and yes there were issues and yes - you were best to wait to update.  But those issues were fixed with iOS 9.3.1 - and it is now looking like iOS 9.3.1 was the update you were looking for.

If you have not upgraded your Apple TV 4th gen to the latest version  - you will want to do so.  Go to settings and check to see if the update is there.  Strangely I had my set to auto update - but it had not and I had to manually update it.  So just because you have it set to auto update - don’t assume it actually you know - auto updated.

The key feature upgrades for Apple TV 4th gen - to latest version of tvOS - Is with Siri and dictation - you can ask siri to find a show or movie and it will look through select apps to find that content.

You can also dictate to siri - instead to trying to enter text the old really annoying and tough way.

You can now have folders.   Nice to put all your games into.

You can now connect an bluetooth keyboard to your apple tv.

And it now syncs better with Photos in your iCloud account including Live Photos.

Siri dictation really makes using the Youtube app - well usable - Finally.

I should also point out - last episode I said the new 9.7 Inch iPad Pro - would make those of us that purchased the 12.9 inch version jealous as the specs all seemed better.  Well that is not 100% accurate - seems the 9.7 Inch version only has 2GB of Ram - vs the 4 GB on the 12.9 inch version.

Here is a quick run down on the differences between the 9.7 and 12.9 inch iPad Pro’s.

    Camera - 12 MP for 9.7 and 8 MP for 12.9

Live Photos and 4k Video recording and Hey Siri supported - 9.7 inch yes - 12.9 inch - no

Colors - No Rose Gold for 12.9

    Display resolution - 2048 x 1536 for 9.7 and  2732 x 2048 for 12.9 inch

The 9.7 also has a less reflective screen and improved LTE.

Processor speed -  9.7 Slightly slower - 12.9 slightly faster.  Seems Apple is clocking the A9X at a slightly slower speed on the 9.7 vs the 12.9 - no idea if this is because of battery life or heat dissipation or a combo there of.  By the way slightly slower means just that - 2.16 GHz for the 9.7 vs 2.25 GHz for the 12.9 unit.

    Fast Charging supported - 9.7 inch - no - 12.9 inch yes

But really the biggest difference between the two is the RAM

    2 GB Ram for 9.7 -   4 GB ram for 12.9

And I say biggest difference - because some point in the future there will likely be an update that will require a min of 4 GB of RAM - and at that time the 12.9 inch iPad Pro with 4GB RAM will get the update - but the 9.7 with just 2GB of RAM will not. Need to remember to come back to these show notes at that time and re-read this on why those complaining at that time their 9.7 iPad pro could not update - but my 12.9 Inch could.  So now I hope anyone that purchased the 12.9 Incher is feeling less buyers remorse.

    many-us-consumers-report/

I mentioned in the opening how wrong were they segment - some negative sentiment around the SE - one of those articles was from Bidnessetc dot com  with it spelled B I D N E S S E T C - right there I should have known to look away - but I did not so bare with me.

From the article with regards to the SE quote

US. Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) has released data that predicts that only 4-6 million iPhone SE units will be sold in 2016 in the US, as 80 million plus larger-screened iPhone 6/6s series users are unlikely to switch to a smaller size. This leaves limited opportunity for the SE to penetrate the market. unquote

CIRP - stated that there are approximately 109 Million Active iPhone in the US - with 62 Mil being the 6 / 6+ and 18 mil being the 6S / 6S+.  The remaining 29 Million they say are the older units.

But looking at their graphs for December - they showed - NO installed user base for the 5, 4S or earlier in the US.  And well that just is not so.

They showed some in earlier charts for the 5 and other - but then they all go away in December starting with the 5C and going up from there.  And again we know that is not so - still many of users with the 5 and 4S and ever 4 running around out there.

Again based on feedback I am getting from listeners - they were excited about having the more powerful A9 in the easier to hold and operate with one hand and fit in any pocket - 4 Inch size.

Will be interesting to see if Apple gives any hint of how the SE is doing on the next conference call at the end of the month.

Maybe I am biased - as my Wife really really likes the 4 inch size and I am hearing the same from others - maybe the 4 inchers are just the vocal minority but I think not - I think this will do well.

Here is one email I received on this.

    Hi Rob,

A very few months ago I paid

    $749 for a 64gb iPhone 6s. Now, I can pay $499 for a 64gb iPhone SE which

has almost all of the attributes of the 6s. And, as I am visually impaired

the smaller screen is not a problem. Perhaps even a plus. So, I would give

up some, as yet not available, LTE speeds, have an inferior front camera

(who cares) have a slower touch id sensor (not a big deal) and likely have

slower flash storage although that wasn't mentioned. All in all worth $250.

    Regards,

    Kevin Barry

    http://appleinsider.com/articles/16/03/28/iphone-se-preorders-

    top-34m-in-china-gold-rose-gold-most-popular---report

Initial reports coming out of China are That Apple had pre-orders of the iPhone SE of 3.4 Million units with Gold being the top choice and Rose Gold a close Second.

The 3.4 Million number of  course is not from Apple - but rather from data supplied by local retailers as reported by CNBC.

If those number are close to the real numbers - then Apple will exceed the 10 to 15 Million range Analists predicted for sales for the SE this year.

There is a video out there of 3 iPhones submerged in Water.

The iPhone 5S, 6S and SE

The iPhone 5S showed water damage after about 5 minutes.

But the 6S and SE continued to work fine even after being in the water for an hour.

Most likely Apple is using the same connector gaskets we saw introduced in the 6S and 6S+.

    18:24

    https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPhone+SE+Teardown/60902

And luckily we can find out as iFixit released their teardown on the iPhone SE.

As always - Apple has their don’t open me up Pentalobe screws - which by this point anyone who is even remotely interested in opening one has two or three pentalobe screw drivers.

First off the displays of the SE and the 5S are pretty much identical.  Not surprising as they had the same specs. But even better news is that they are identical - as in a replacement screen for the 5S worked on the SE and vice versa - so replacement screens are already very widely available for the SE.

I know some people wanted 3D touch - but given the lower cost nature for the SE - the replacement / repair of the screen is now also much lower cost then if it was a unique new 3D touch screen for it.

The battery in the SE is not the same as the 5S - it is better.  It is 1624 mAh for the SE vs 1,560 mAh for the 5S.  A 4% jump in battery is better then the same or less.

Per Water issues - this is what iFixit found

quote Also of note: waterproof seals! There be foamy silicone seals surrounding some—but, mysteriously, not all—of the logic board connections.  The front camera, volume controls, and rear camera connectors all get the fancy waterproofing treatment, while the LCD, digitizer, battery, and Lightning connector assembly all seemingly go without.  unquote

I am sure there will be many more videos on the iPhone SE in water - and by the sounds of it from iFixit - some of them are going to have issues - as it does not sound like Apple did the gaskets / silicone seals around all the logic board connections this time round.

Still it is a big improvement from the iPhone 5S - which had none of this.

Repairability for the SE was a 6 out of 10 - which might not sound good - but is actually better than other iOS devices.

how about more? How about Word for the Apple Tv? Typing tutor apps?

We only have to  be a short step away from Apple putting Safari on the

Quote What does the SE stand for?

Apple has finally confirmed what the SE in its new iPhone's name is for. The new phone's name stands for Special Edition, according to Phil Schiller, Apple's head of marketing. unquote

    Thanks Chris.

Per the SE - I think we may see it on 2 year update cycle - with the iPhone and iPhone Pro - on yearly updates - and dropping of the whole S label.  So essentially come September we would go to three iPhones for sale from Apple.

iPhone - which will be the new 4.7 Incher with the A10 processor.  The iPhone Pro - at 5.5 Inches also with the A10 processor.  and the iPhone SE - with the A9 processor.

Again with the iPhone and iPhone Pro on Yearly updates - but keeping their name as is.  So in 2017 - it is just the iPhone 2017 version with A11 processor - and the SE would not get updated until Spring 2018 and will go from A9 to A11 processor as well.  Of course Apple likes to keep the previous years models for sale - and may do so - in BRIC countries - but not in the US - and at that time rebrand the older units with a new name to differentiate.  Ok - clearly I don’t have all the details worked on this - but it does seem with the iPhone SE name and the thought of the iPhone 12 or 18 sounding silly - Apple needs to change the other names - and I am leaning heavily toward the iPhone 7 name never coming into being.

One new item Apple introduced or really added to their store - not much of an introduction.  Is the USB-C to Lightning cable.

This is nice for those with the 12.9. Inch iPad Pro - as you can use this with the 29 Watt USB-C power adapter that comes with the 12 Inch Macbook to Fast Charge your iPad Pro.

As briefly mentioned earlier - Fast charging is only supported by the 12.9 Inch iPad Pro and not the new 9.7 Inch iPad Pro.

Which if you went to charge the iPad Pro from an almost dead state you will know takes a while to charge.

You can also use the USB-C to Lightning cable to sync with your USB-C MacBook as well

    wont-work-with-new-ipads-because-of-magnets-2016-4

Thanks to Chris in London for the heads up on this next one.

Seems if you buy the new iPad Pro 9.7 Inch - and plan on using last years 9.7 Inch iPad Air smart Cover - umm - yeah - no so much.

Yes the devices are the same size - but Apple had to move the magnets a little and that causes the last flap of the cover to float above the iPad and not close.

Apple says the movement of the magnets was necessary because of the new keyboard connector on the side which is needed for the smart keyboard.

Some are saying this was done on purpose to make it such you could not re-use the older smart cover.  And given Apple is charging $39 for the old one for the iPad Air 2 and $49 for the new one the Apple Pro 9.7 inch - even though they are basically the same thing just with the magnets moved - that difference in price for the same basic thing seems to give back up to those that said it was designed obsolescence.

I don’t think it was such - but I do feel the extra $10 is not warranted given they are basically the same cover.

    http://www.theverge.com/2016/3/23/11286052/walt-

    mossberg-apple-iphone-7-preview-predictions

Walt Mossberg had an Article of 7 things he would like to see in the next gen iPhones.  Which he says Apple really needs to do to jump back up as clearly the best smartphone.  He also pointed out the Galaxy S7 is a very good phone.  I held one this past week and I will say this - it is the first Android Phone I held that felt quality wise like an iPhone.  As Walt Points out it is still hampered by having to run that buggy mess of an OS called Android - I am paraphrasing there a little - but point is - the S7 Hardware wise and fit / finish / feel wise is on par with the iPhone - and Apple needs to up its game big time to get that lead back.

Per the seven things Walt wants to see.

First is for Apple to make a big leap in battery life even if it means going a little thicker than thinner.  Latest rumors are thinner for the next gen.  But I am with Walt 100% on this - if it meant going 2 mm thicker vs 2 mm thinner - and the end result was greatly improved battery life - vs having to lug around an extra battery pack - I would be all for that.  Really the iPhone does not need to be as thin as it is - and definitely does not need to be thinner.  Battery Life TRUMPS thinness at least according to anyone I know.  Plus how thin is it really if you have to put in in a case with a battery.

Second item from Walt is per Charging of the devices and how long it takes.  He points out while quote iPhones aren’t especially slow at charging, but Samsung is now faster, and there are companies working on systems that offer somewhat less battery life in exchange for ultra-quick charging that can take as little as five minutes. unquote

And while talking about charging he also puts in his wish for wireless charging.  So item two is really faster charging and wireless charging.

Third is about the top and bottom bezels - as in them being much too large.  He points out that the key selling point on the SE is not the smaller screen - but the smaller body - making it easier to hold.

By reducing the bezels you reduce the size of the body or you can increase the size of the screen.  Personally I think they would go with the smaller body over yet another screen size.  And per the bezel - yes you could shrink it a bit on the top - but to shrink the bottom - that means doing away with the home button and touch ID on its own.  And then moving Touch ID under the screen - and that means going with Sapphire for the screen for best results - or offering up a sub-par experience when your screen is scratched or cracked. Yes the top bezel clearly has room to be shrunk - but the bottom one - that is a big change - that said - there are rumors out there about no more home button and the touch ID integrated under the screen.  So maybe we will see that.

His fourth wish is for Optical Zoom.  The Dual Lens Camera that has been rumored is one way this may be achieved.  He goes on to say low light capabilities need to be greatly improved on the iPhone as does taking photos quicker - something he points out that the new S7 does better than the iPhone now.

His Fifth desire has to do with making the iPhone more robust.  Making it much more water resistant and much more resistant to drops with out cracking.  As he says the iPhone screens are so prone to cracking on small drops and the case is so slippery - no one dares cary it around naked - so you don’t get to see how pretty it is - because they are all wrapped up in big bulky cases.  Kind of like having Sofia Vargas as your new girlfriend and showing up a the family reunion with her wrapped up in a snow suit like the kid from A Christmas story.  By the way it is very likely he will get this wish - no not Sofia Vargas as his girlfriend - but a more sturdy iPhone - as it is likely to be highly Water resistant - and if he gets the smaller bezel wish - then it could be Sapphire.  Someone purchased all those furnaces.  Just sayin.

His Sixth hankering was for apple take the 16 GB storage level out behind the building and put a bullet in its head  Hmmm - not heard of that request before - kind of new around here.  Yeah 16 Don’t buy me GB’s should have been put down in 2015.  Walt even suggest 64 GB being the min storage level possibly.  ABSOLUTELY.  But it will not happen.  I would be happy to see it at 32 barely adequate GB for the base model.

And for his 7th and final yearning - here is Walt’s own words

Quote Finally, as I’ve written before, Apple needs to up its game in phone software. Its Mail app needs to do a much better job of handling Gmail, which has a billion users, even if rival Google makes that hard. Users should be able to select their own favorite apps for core functions. Apple Maps and Siri both need much more work to be consistently reliable, and it’s time to make iMessage, which works well, cross-platform. unquote.

Really can’t argue with any of what he mentioned there.

And over all - I agree - this next upgrade to the iPhone and iPhone Pro - 2016 versions - needs to be a multi-generational jump in performance. Not a slight incremental change.  I held and played with the S7 last week - and the gap is not just narrowed - in some ways the gap is now on the wrong side.

Harrys last month sent me over a nice box of goodies. In that box was the new Truman Razor - this is the one with their new rubber handle - the Wife has totally confiscated that for herself.  She likes the nice rubber grip in the shower - but it uses the same Great Harrys 5 german engineered and manufactured blades.

and if you go to harrys dot com - that is h a r r y s dot com and use the promo code t i i - you will save $5 on your first order.

Also in that kit I received some of the shaving gel - which is so nice.  No Phosphates not toxic chemicals - just good stuff for your skin.

As I said the blades are incredible - there are 5 of them - not 3 or 4 - but 5.  No cuts no burn - and the best shave I have ever had and a really great price.  Why Pay $32 for an 8 pack of blades when you can get them 1/2 that price at Harrys.com   And yes I do buy them - they don’t just send me samples all the time.  I actually now have enough blades to get me through not just 2016 but also likely most if not all of 2017 as well.  Definitely will be set for 2017 once Fathers day comes around.

Harry's went and found a German blade factory that was almost 100 years old and purchased it.  Harry’s owns the most important part of the razor - the blade and by cutting out the middle men on both sides means they can keep the price low to you.

Plus Harrys as an organization helps those looking for jobs - by donating 1% of their sales and 1% of their time to help prepare people for professional success.  Yes a shave that feels great from a company you can feel great about.

Once again go to Harrys.com now and save $5 off when you enter the code - t i i with your first purchase.  That is h a r r y s dot com and enter the coupon code T I I at check out to save $5 on your first purchase and start shaving better.

    VOICEMAIL - Clinton_instant_hotspot_question

Hey Rob, I was on the Apple website today and was looking at the 6s' and wondered how much the 64GB model would cost so I clicked on continue and then it brought me to a page called iPhone Accessories and so I looked at them

and at the bottom there were a pair of Beats ear pods and a pair of Beats headphones. Now they were wireless headphone and ear pods so, I was thinking that there are many rumours about the iPhone 7 with no headphone jack so I think apple is trying to point customers to buying wireless headphones and ear pods so they don't have to if they get an iPhone 7. Anyway, that is just what I think and might not be true. Thanks for the show Rob.

    Regards,

    -Mathieu from Canada

Hi Mathieu - thanks for the email. That goes with some other rumors of late that Apple might include wireless earbuds with the next gen iPhone and if you want - then the wired earbuds that plug into the lightening port would be optional.  One of those rumors shows where the wireless hear bud would split in two with a lightening plug and you would plug that into the lightening port to power it. And I can neither confirm nor deny I made that rumor up but the point is if Apple does supply wireless earbuds they need to / have to come with a novel and very very easy way to recharge said wireless earbuds.

I don't know if the iOS 9.3 or with os 2.2 but the apple watch burn through the battery. I unpaired apple and had to do a reset to pair the watch and iPhone together again.

We will see how long the battery will last now.

    Regards,

    Hansel

Not sure if anyone else had this issue - but on this trip this past week - I noticed my Apple Watch battery life was actually better than I had been seeing.  So for me the updates to 9.3 and the latest Watch OS - actually seems to have improved the battery life.

    And Hansel reported back saying

    Hi Rob,

After the restart, no problems. I haven't noticed the same issue.

    Regards

    Hansel

    Hi Rob,

Why do broadcasters keep describing the IPhone SE as a 4" iPhone?  If it resembles the 5 most closely then it is 5”.

    Name redacted.

Umm Because the screen is 4 INCHES -  and not 5 INCHES.

Screen sizes for iPhone are the following:

    4S and earlier = 3.5 inches

    5, 5S, 5C, SE = 4 inches

    6, 6S = 4.7 inches

    6+, 6S+ = 5.5 inches

    magic-pencil-holder-for-apple-pencil-i?ref=nav_search

This week for a Kickstarter project we have the BulletTrain Magic Pencil Holder for Apple Pencil and iPad Pro.

This one had a goal of just $4,700 - which it has reached. And you have until April 12th at 11:43 AM to fund it.

The BulletTrain - one word has this description on the page:

quote A beautifully streamlined dock that allows you to simply attach your Apple Pencil to your iPad Pro—A dock for Pencil to call "home”! unquote

They do a good job on their page - by including a picture of the tray next to the iPads in an apple store where the Apple pencil sits.  Apple knows you need a place to store it they say - so that is why they created BulletTrain.

Apple recently announced they are selling replacement tips for the Apple Pencil - and someone in the Google+ community asked why you would need a replacement tip.  I just said WHEN you drop one you will know why it comes with a replacement tip and why Apple is selling them.

The BulletTrain comes in Black, Red, White and Blue.

And it looks like you just stick it to a flat surface and then the Apple pencil sticks to it. and it even sticks over the top of the Smart keyboard cover when closed.  Check out the video on this one.

Pricing on this is $39 for 1 or $69 for 2 with shipments in July.

Again search for BulletTrain - one word in Kickstarter.

Again you just have until April 12th to fund this one.

    original-tv-show-will-be-about-apps

Thanks to Dr. John and others that sent in this next one.

Well Apple is getting into the Content Creation game - with their own TV series.  This will be a non-scripted TV show about App Devs.

Black Eyed Pea’s singer Wii.I.Am is involved as is Producer Ben Silverman who also produced The Office and Jane the Virgin.

I would imagine this will be available to Apple TV and iTunes users for free once available.

In the mean time if you want to see a store about developers - Get the HBO Now App and sign up for that service - it is $15 a month and then you can watch Silicon Valley - GREAT GREAT Show.  Oh and then there is that other show - Game of Thrones as well.

Hi Rob, I found this article about apple's new robot Liam and found this article very interesting

    Thanks for the show

    regards,

    -Mathieu from Canada

Thanks Mathieu for the heads up on this.  And the article talked about how some think in the video of Robot Liam taking about iPhones that it was showing a next gen iPhone since it does not appear to have a camera bump on the back.

However as pointed out in the article - NO - Apple would not show a next gen product in their own video 5 months before it is unveiled.

I did read another article about liam - and while Apple kind of made it sound like it was a one of a kind - the article said for it to be meaningful Apple will need many Liam’s because given the numbers Apple presented for how long it takes to strip down an old iPhone - Liam would be lucky to strip out a little over 1 Million a year.  Apple sells many time more than that a week - the will need a good size team of Liams to make a dent.

    Dear Robert @ Tii,

I'm hoping to get a suggestion for a good VNC app for iOS (will be used on new iPad Pro 9.7") that uses the SSH protocol when connecting to a Mac remotely.  I have only found Screens VNC by Edovia (@ $19.99 USD) in all of my searches. There must be other good apps! Thank you for answering my request.

    Regards,

    Fernando

Folks - let us know what you would recommend for Fernando - shoot us an email - today in iOS at gmail dot com or give us a call - 206 - 666 - 6364 - that is 206 - moon - dog

    Hey Rob.

Have you heard of anyone experiencing issues with their "read" receipts in iMessage? I just updated to iOS 9.3, full restore through iTunes using NO backup to restore from. I decided to forfeit my 9.0.2 jailbreak and try out 9.3. Totally not worth it because of this flaw. The only reason I did it is because my iPad Air 2 is still jailbroken on 9.0.2, which shows the "read" receipts. I should also mention the "read" receipts on my iPhone will sometimes show up, but not always like it should. Very annoying. Thanks, love the show!

    Oshkosh Josh

    Hi Josh,

I have not heard of this issue - Obviously I would recommend you update to iOS 9.3.1 if you have not already.

If anyone else had this issue - and fixed it - let us know how - give us a call or shoot us an email.

    apple-iphone-case-cracked/index.html

We mentioned on the last episode that the FBI said they thought they had a solution to open the terrorists iPhone and they with drew they legal case in California on getting Apple to add a backdoor.  Since then the FBI has confirmed they have unlocked said iPhone and do have access to it.  So the method they thought would work - they are now claiming did work and will work for other iPhones.

Or to quote the DOJ quote "The FBI has now successfully retrieved the data stored on the San Bernardino terrorist's iPhone and therefore no longer requires the assistance from Apple required by this Court Order, unquote said DOJ spokeswoman Melanie Newman

For their Part Apple said the court case quote

"should have never been brought.” unquote and Apple reiterated its objection to the FBI's demand that the company build a backdoor into the iPhone, a step Apple said would have quote "set a dangerous precedent. Apple believes deeply that people in the United States and around the world deserve data protection, security and privacy, Sacrificing one for the other only puts people and countries at greater risk.” unquote

The DOJ and FBI have not said how they did this or who did it for them.

    could-force-the-fbi-into-revealing-how-it-hacked-into-an-iphone

The FBI has not said if they will let Apple know how the hack was done - but if other legal cases like the one in Brooklyn are continued - they likely will have no choice but to reveal the method to Apple and the courts.

Most Likely the Justice Department will withdraw its case in Brooklyn and just have the FBI unlock the phones they have with the method they used.

On that note the FBI has assured law enforcement across the US that it will help unlock mobile devices such as iPhone involved in on going investigations - quote when it is allowed by law AND policy unquote

In a letter to local authorities it said the FBI quote understands the challenges they face and that they lack necessary tools to monitor and investigate the communications of suspects who use encrypted mobile devices.  As has been our longstanding policy, the FBI will of course consider any tool that might be helpful to our partners, Please know that we will continue to do everything we can to help you consistent with our legal and policy constraints. unquote

The FBI said in the letter that it was aware of the quote worldwide publicity and attention that was generated by the Apple litigation unquote and that the FBI was committed to maintaining quote an open dialogue with local law enforcement.  We are in this together. unquote

And by this - if they mean a big pile of steaming cow dung - absolutely could not agree more.

    http://free-iphone-recovery.blogspot.com/2016/03/how-

    could-fbi-hack-locked-iphone.html

Technically there are a lot of questions about how this was done and who did this.

Some think it was a new yet unknown by Apple bug in iOS 9 and maybe earlier version.  Clearly Apple wants to know if that was the case - and don’t be surprised if you don’t see a counter suit by Apple to get the details revealed on this.

Others think maybe it was a brute force attack - where they cloned the phones memory - tried 10 passcodes - they did not work - phone is erased - they reflash the phone with the clone - try the next 10 and so on - until they got the right code.

But I will put in one of my own theories on this.  Now call me crazy.  But on Feb 18th John Mcaffe said he could crack the iPhone and it would take him a month to do it.  Almost exactly 30 days later - the FBI said - never mind - we have someone that showed us they can do it.

On top of that he went on a Youtube video at the end of Feb saying he could do it - and then two days later - said never mind I was just kidding to get publicity.  Or was he just lying about lying.  Look most people consider John Mcaffee one of the smartest technical minds out there - even if said mind seems to have a few lets call them bugs or glitches.  It just seems strange - 32 days after he first said he could crack it in a month - the FBI said they had someone that could crack it - and they are not saying who it is.  Sure some people are theorizing it is a company from Israel - but me I think it just might be ole Crazy John McAffee.

    ditched-secrecy-openness/

I want to give a little post script to this whole Apple v FBI.

I think when you look at the facts - you will see the FBI really blundered in many many ways on this. I am sure there will be books written about this whole episode.

First off the FBI claimed from the beginning it was about 1 iPhone belonging to Terrorists that killed multiple Americans and it was not about a precedent.

This was clearly BS from day one - and in front of Congress the FBI said it would set a precedence.  DUhhh.  So right from the start they were not being honest to the American People. They also did a very dirty tactic of using the case of a terrorist to pull at the heart strings of Americans - plus I am sure they figured Apple would not want to fight that case - who wants to look like they are on the side of Terrorists - and that was how the FBI framed Apple in this fight and Apple clearly would not go public on this and give in quickly.

They were wrong - that leads us to their other big mistake - they tried to make this a PR battle by going public first.  And lets face facts - the FBI and DOJ on the PR front - is like a 2nd grade Pee Wee football team going against an NFL Super Bowl winning team - when you look at the Apple PR machine.

I think the FBI over estimated the power of the Terrorist Card.  Or put another way - The FBI looked at the Terrorist Card as the Broad sword owned by Ned Stark - sure it is a powerful weapon and made of Valarian steel - but what good is it if you put it in the hands of Sansa Stark - and ask her to go against the Mountain.

The FBI was just not ready for Apple to go on the offensive - after all Apple never really does.  But they had to and they were right to.   And Apple clearly presented the issues with the FBI’s case - it is hard to say how they would have done in court.  But I think by the end of the case - it was clear - in the court of public opinion - it had swung in Apples favor.  With All the tech companies and press behind Apple.

The irony in all of this is if the FBI had kept their mouth shut - never forced the issue publicly - and back channeled for someone to unlock the phones - they would now have a way to unlock iPhones and the bad guys would not know it.  The FBI really blundered this for themselves.  But on the positive side for all of us - Apple’s big call to action was to slow down and get a public debate about this whole issue.  Apple now has some breathing room on that front - and they clearly have shown they are very very willing to break their traditional silence and come out and publicly talk about Privacy issues and Apple products.  Privacy was a corner stone of the founding of this country - it just seems all too often bad events are used to break down the Privacy we should all enjoy in the US.  Maybe I am channeling a little too much Dan Carlin here - but that is just how I feel - and I am proud to be an Apple fan boy given how Apple is fighting much harder for my Privacy than the US Government appears to be.  Just Sayin.
