In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote

“With yesterday’s announcement of the new Windows Phone 7 I believe we are seeing the rise of Windows Phone 7 as the iPhone killer. Forget Android, this is the one you need to pay attention to.”

Jamie Riddell, CEO of Digital Tomorrow Today, 16 March 2010

With all these iPhone killers out there - it kind of makes the iPhone the John Snow of Smartphones  - Just Sayin.

On ep 396 - I went over some of the changes in the Settings app - I stopped at the new Home Kit settings.

Next up is Music - and there are some changes. There is a new “downloads” subsection.  With Downloaded Music option showing how many bytes of downloaded music you have on your iOS device.  And the option Automatic Downloads toggle.  When toggled on - when adding music to your library - it also will download to that iOS device and downloaded songs are available for playback when offline.

There is now an Optimize Storage toggle - that when turned on - if your iOS device is low on Space - it will automatically remove music from that iOS device that you have played in a while. When turned on - it also gives you options for a min amount of storage you can allocate to Apple Music from None to, 8, 16, 32 or 64 GB’s of min storage space allocated just of Apple music.

Under the Library sub-cat - they added in Sort Songs by Title or Artist.  Previously it was just sorting Albums by Artist and Title.

Settings for Video also added a couple small features - One is use cellular data toggle.  And then for a new sub-cat - playback quality - you have the option of Wifi with either Best Available or Good.

And of you turned on Use Cellular data - you also can adjust the playback quality as well - also with the choice of Best Available or Good.

For Settings for the Photo App - the only difference I can see is the addition of the control toggle for Show Holiday events.

Nothing new to announce - for iBooks settings, or Podcasts App settings, or iTunes U settings or GameCenter - same ole - same ole.

Beyond the changes in the settings app for apps - there was actually you know - changes to the actual apps.

For instance - With Calendar in iOS 10 - here is some of what is new.

    1. Found events - You get calendar suggestions for events found in Mail and messages.  So you can add them easily.  Wonder how many young’s are going to wind up with Netflix and Chill for Friday and Saturday nights.

    2. Time to Leave - this is where Calendar uses Apple Maps to look up locations, traffic conditions, and transit options to tell you when to get off your back side and get going to your event.

    3. Location Suggestions are added to Calendars.  The Calendar will suggest the location for a new event based on your past events and frequent locations

The clock app gets a whole new look and a new major category - with bedtime joining - World Clock, Alarm, Stopwatch and Timer.   Bedtime - allows you to create a wake alarm - based on a questions the App asks you - seems they think going to bed and waking up the same time every day is key to good health.  Clearly not an app written by a podcaster.

In the Notes app - as mentioned at WWDC - there is now the collaboration option - where you can pick a note and then invite people via mail, twitter and Facebook to join a meeting where everyone invited can make changes to the Note.  Just like google docs.

    08:41

I mentioned on the last episode that Swift Playgrounds was live now at least the first lesson.  My older son has been going through that.  I have to say this - I am very very impressed with Swift Playgrounds.  It is teach a good deal of fundamentals for programing that a 10 year can understand and be inspired to spend multiple hours a day on.

How it starts out is you have this character byte and you have to move him around and do things for the different challenges.  Turn on or off a tile - grab a gem.  Note on the gem grabbing - it does seem there is an intermittent bug - where he goes to grab a gem and it does not grab the gem - near as I can tell - it is just a bug - and definitely does not repeat all the time.

And we have found other bugs where when you enter the code - it does not perform perfect.  Even if you put in exactly the code they show for answer and the code that should be the answer.  So yes - there are bugs in the software to teach you how to code.  As I told my Son - this is just Apples way of introducing you to the concept of what a Bug is.  Sure they can talk about it - but it is much more memorable if they give you examples in their own software.  Just Sayin.

And that said let me go over Swift Playgrounds Learn to Code 1 - Fundamentals of Swift.

The first section goes over Commands - very simple commands.  How to issue commands, even some bug squashing.

Next section goes over functions - what they are - creating them and more.

Then they go into loops - followed by Conditional codes - If - and else ifs

They also have sections on Logical Operators, While Loops, Algorithms, Variables, Types, Initialization, Parameters, and finally end with a section called World Building.

That is all in their Intro to Code 1 section.

I said when Apple introduced Swift Fundamentals - that could be the most important announcement of WWDC 2016 - and now that I have had a chance to watch my son use it - and have him show me the code he has written to solve the problems - I am now convinced it was the most important part of WWDC 2016.  Kudos Apple on this great great resource.

And for those with an iPad - and thinking of getting iOS 10 - if you have a kid in the house that is looking to learn programing or if you are looking to learn program - this is definitely worth putting the beta of iOS 10 on your iPad for.

    VOICEMAIL - Tom_Confirm_iPad_wifi.mp3

    Hi Rob,

Wifi passwords are stored in iCloud Keychain. It works really great, I have had my iPhone login into a secure wifi network moments after logging into the network on my MacBook Pro.

Here is a link to the Apple support doc that talks about this.

    Notnerd Podcast

    Hi Rob,

To answer a few questions from the previous episode:

    1. Wi-Fi network sharing between devices: Yes, joined Wi-Fi network information is shared between iOS devices (and even Macs). I believe this requires one to enable "iCloud Keychain" on your devices (because the Wi-Fi network's password is also saved and shared, thus Keychain must be enabled because a password is being saved and shared).

    2. SOS in WatchOS 3: SOS is not activated merely by holding down the button adjacent to the crown. An additional swipe action is required to place an SOS call. In WatchOS 2, holding the button gave 3 options: Power Off, Power Reserve, and Lock Device:

In WatchOS 3, Power Reserve and Lock Device have been relocated to the new Comtrol Center, which replaced Glances:

Lock Device has its own icon in the new Control Center (bottom right padlock icon). Power Reserve can be manually enabled by tapping on the battery percentage in Control Center (upper left), then on "Power Reserve". It's a little bit buried compared to  WatchOS 2, but presumably it will still be an option when the Watch warns when the battery level falls to 10%.

So with Power Reserve and Lock Device removed from their previous location (holding down the button), Apple has added "Medical ID" and "Emergency SOS" in their place:

Presumably, you'll need to swipe on "Emergency SOS" to place the emergency call, at which point it'll kick off the 3-second countdown. Perhaps an additional "press and hold" while on this screen might also place the call, but I don't have the beta installed and I don't know if I'd want to try. ;) Needless to say, the initial "press and hold" of the button isn't going to place an SOS call, as this initial "press and hold" is needed to get to the Watch's "Power Off" and "Medical ID" functions as well.

We have a new sponsor - and I have a new toy - and that is RING - the video Doorbell with advanced Motion detection tech.  It really is nice to answer the doorbell from anywhere - the grocery store, the movies, in my car, at a restaurant, and in bed - these are places I have answered the door bell in the last week alone.  And the best part is you can see who is there and hear them - and then decide if you want to say anything or just watch and make sure they leave.

For me it is mostly about convenance - but it is also about security.  I get things delivered all the time - Amazon Prime is a big part of how I shop.  And now I can also see any activity near the front door.

The folks from RING point out that there is a home burglary ever 13 seconds and most happen in the broad daylight - where a burglar first rings your doorbell to see if you are home.  By allowing you to speak to someone you are not sure who they are - it will scare off those with bad thoughts and intentions.

If you go to Ring dot com slash T i i - you will get for a limited Time $50 off the Ring of Security kit - which includes a video doorbell, Stick up Cam, solar Panel and indoor chime.

For the Video Door bell it quickly - and easily connects to your wired door bell wires.  So the main unit is not something you have to worry about charging if you wire it up.  It took me all of twenty minutes if that to remove the old door bell and replace it with the Video Doorbell from Ring.

And you can also share access to it with others in your house. My Wife and son also get access to the door bell and video.

So if I can’t answer or even if I do - they can answer as well.

The RING doorbell has been a huge hit with my kids and their friends.

The Stick up Cam can be used to watch other parts of your house and also installs in minutes.

Go to ring dot com slash t i i - to save $50 off either Ring of Security Kit.

Thanks Ring for sponsoring this episode.

The first couple of weeks I occasionally had a call drop (I happened to be working in a building with wifi, but no cell service). Now, I can't even tell if I'm on wifi. No change in spam; I don't really see how this could affect span.

IF you can turn it on, there won't be an extra charge...T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon in the US have it, I don't think Sprint does.

I disabled mine because if you are on a conference call and want to leave your house you will drop the call. At least on Verizon with an iPhone 6s.

AND I WILL add - I turned it off - as I was having issues getting my Hot Spot to work when I had it turned on - that was earlier this year with iOS 9.0 - but I have not turned it back on since.  Also had issue getting voice mail messages right away.  Seemed to really delay them coming in.

Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts and comments in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

    From Kareem Haskett

    quote

I am listening to episode 396 now and your discussion on the headphone jack rumors reminded me of an issue I've had with iOS 10 on my iPhone 6S Plus. Not sure if anyone else is having this issue but my headphone jack does not work on iOS 10. Could that possible be a hint of what's to come for the iPhone 7? The software seems to have turned off the headphone jack. Not a huge problem for me since all of my headphones are wireless. However, I do listen to my podcasts while driving using an aux cable, which no longer works. With that being said, I found an awesome workaround on Amazon called the Soundbot that allows you to listen through sound via your aux input using Bluetooth. This problem turned out to be a blessing for me since the Soundbot is way more convenient than my old method of plugging an aux cable into my phone. Now my phone automatically connect when I start my car to provide me with flawless audio with no wires attached. My car has built in Bluetooth but only for talking on the phone. The Soundbot completely upgraded the Bluetooth in my car. BTW, it may sound like it but I am in no way affiliated with Soundbot's business.

    iphone-sniffing-prison-dogs

Interesting article from the Marshall project dot org website titled - The amazing iPhone sniffing prison dogs.

Yes - they have trained dogs to sniff out iPhones in prisons.

One dog Drako has found over 1,000 iPhones.

What was really interesting is that they teach them to smell not just the lithium battery - but also the sim card smell.

The fact that California finds 1,000’s of iPhones each year in prisons is pretty scary.

We are getting a new dog next month - wonder if you can train a frenchie to find iPhones and iPads - and well car keys while I am at it.

    http://finance.yahoo.com/news/latest-iphone-7-leaks-

    show-130028391.html

There are two things that will we see a lot of between now and September.

    1. Is new features found in the beta of iOS 10

    2. The latest iPhone 7 rumors and leaks info.

Since we already covered 1 - time to now cover number 2.

The latest one making the rounds is a supposed leaked photo or really photos of a case for the iPhone 7 and said photo shows that on the bottom of the device there is no headphone port - but rather dual speakers.

So it seems we are swinging back to the no headphone port rumor camp.

Photos are on the site - Nowhereelse.fr - a site that has had some early leaks of mechanicals in years past.

The other thing from the pics is the opening for the camera on the iPhone 7 is much bigger than on the iPhone 6 - backing up the rumor about a bigger camera module / upgrade for the iPhone 7.  That would be a single camera module.

The iPhone 7+ is the one that will supposedly have the dual camera module.

    leaks-reveal-oled-screen-dual-camera-256gb-lightning-

    adapter-and-more

Thanks to Chris in London for the heads up on this next one.

Which is more iPhone 7 rumors - and that is Samsung will be supplying OLED screens for the next gen iPhones.

Another new rumor is that there might even be a dual sim unit in the works for the next gen iPhone.

And of course there is the rumors backing up others - that the top end will be 256 GB for storage. And that the next gen will ship with a lightening to 3.5 MM headphone jack adapter.  Because we all love having a dongle to play with.

    24:07

    http://www.tomsguide.com/us/iphone-pro,news-22896.html

Thanks to all that sent in this next one.

And that is this year come September - we will not have TWO new iPhones - but three.

iPhone 7, iPhone 7 plus and iPhone 7 Pro.

This per rumors found on Weibo.

What are some of the specs.

The iPhone 7 would come in 32 not enough GB, 64 barely enough GB’s and 256 now we are talking GB’s.

While the iPhone 7 plus and pro would come in

32 you should be embarrassed to call this plus or pro GB - 128   yes that is good GB’s and 256 room to breath GB’s versions.

They also had break downs on pricing for those three plus the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus and how they would all fit together.

No other differences between the plus and pro versions.

It is possible that the pro version could have the smart connector and even be a little bigger than the plus.

Again I am just passing along the latest rumor dejur - not saying I believe in them.

lots of spaghetti being thrown at lots of walls these days.

    25:30

    http://www.valuewalk.com/2016/06/iphone-8-specs-and-

    rumors-that-you-need-to-know/

Ok - so we talk about the iPhone 7 - and that is dominating most of the blog posts on rumors - but it is not 100% dominating - more so this year than any other year - we are seeing rumor reports on the iPhone the generation after the next Gen - or the iPhone 8 to keep things simple.

One of those rumors is that the OLED screens supposedly coming from Samsung - are NOT for the iPhone 7 - but rather for the iPhone 8.

Additionally the screen will run edge to edge - and it will be curved and glass on both sides.  yes - pretty much guaranteeing how ever you drop it - that cracking sound will be clear and distinctive.

It will of course have the A11 processor - right - since the iPhone 7 will have the A10.  And the A11 will use 10 Nanometer technology.

Because it is glass on both sides - it will be easy to inductive charge.

The iPhone 8 will get rid of the home button.

And will offer all around improvements like better or enhanced biometrics features - such as advanced facial recognition and even iris scanning.  Hence no need for finger print scanning.

Basically it will be smarter - faster - glassier - and betterer than the iPhone 7 and 6 generations.

And because it will be soooo darn sexy - it is possible that many will not upgrade to the iPhone 7 - causing even more pent up demand - for the iphone 8 - which will start Apple back on the path to a $1 Trillion market cap.

That is actually easy - you just go to the App Store app - and “re-download” the app - and it will be restored and active and un-hid again.

    Hi Rob,

I do a lot of driving and have been thinking about getting an after market radio for the truck to utilize CarPlay. But there are a few different makes and models out there these days. Hard to find a lot of constructive feedback online as to which one(s) are user friendly the best. Didn't know if you could throw that question out to the community? Or if you had a previous episode I somehow missed that compared models?

    64 GB is $60

    128 GB is $89

    256 GB is $149

    and 512 GB is $299

Actually just getting it to extend the storage on my macbook pro is almost worth it at that price and with the speed of USB 3.0

Right now they have raised 26% of their initial goal - of just $2,000 - and they have 2 months left on this.

They estimate September for ship date.

I do like the size - storage and flexibility - both USB 3.0 and lightening.  The two key methods my Laptop and iOS devices connect.

My Oldest Son wanted me to mention his new favorite free app on the apple TV 4th gen - it is Cell Connect - two words from Boombit - the app is also available for iOS devices.

But it does play really well on the Apple TV.

It is a fun / addictive game where you move numbers around from one cell to another to get 4 of the same numbers grouped together - which then turns them into the sum of the 4 -  If you move a number and it does not combine 4 or more of a number - then the next group of numbers are added and once all the cells have numbers in them the game is over.  There is some good strategy involved and since next group of numbers go to random cells - there is some luck.

Again the game play on the Apple TV is very nice - so if you are looking for a good free game for Apple TV this is One Henry recommends.

If you have a favorite free or paid game for Apple TV - give me a call - 206-666-6364 - that is 206-moon-dog or shot us an email - today in iOS at gmail dot com - share your favorite Apple TV games with the audience.

    Hi Rob,

Would you please poll other listeners for suggestions on a web page aggregator.

Something like the Apple news app that lets you follow a topic.

I would use this to stay current with health care programs such HIPAA and a new one called MACRA. This would be a great time saver for many people.

Thanks for all that you put into TII!

    06/17/apple-wants-to-kill-a-bill-that-could-make-it-easier-

    for-you-to-fix-your-iphone/

    Hi Rob,

    FYI.

    Dr. John M

And this is a post from the Washington post titled - Apple wants to kill a bill that could make it easier for you to fix your iPhone

Those evil SOB’s - what are they thinking.

There is a New York bill called the Fair Repair Act - that is intended to give indie repair centers access to official components.  It would require hardware manufactures to make repair instructions and parts available to the public.

But it seems the Bills progress in the NY state legislature is no going well - and Huf Po - reported on docs that show Apple lobbied to kill the bill.  THINK!!!

    From the Article quote:

"Apple in particular has been really vocal about how environmentally friendly they are, but then, behind the scenes, they're subverting every possible technique that people could have to make their products last longer,” said Kyle Wiens  founder of iFixit.   Apple removed the iFixit app,  from the app store last year when iFixit posted instructions on how to tear down the Apple TV.

    unquote

You mean the tear down of the Apple TV that was sent out just to Developers early and which the Developers had to agree not to tear open or give info out on - and the one where iFixit joked during the tear down they probably would get in trouble - you mean that Apple TV tear down?   Just Sayin.

It is not shocking that Apple or any other hardware manufacturer would not want to do what the bill would force them to do.  It would be nice if Apple made official parts available - and made it easier for DIY’rs to repair iOS devices.

The article though is pretty slanted - it even has this quote - I kid you not.

QUOTE - Think back to a time when the back panel of a television set had schematics and diagrams posted on it, This was not thousands of years ago. This is how society was, but it was slowly taken away from us piece by piece over the last decade. This is important because we will eventually live in a world where everything is disposable if the precedent continues — where you do not own a device, you're renting it until it breaks. unquote

UMMMM - yeah - that schematic they are talking about was so you could change out Vacuum tubes - which are like light bulbs - and burn out of time - heck there used to be vacuum tube testers at most local Drug stores.   Yes times have changed - and we no longer have vacuum tubes in our electronics - well unless you have a really really high end amplifier for your music system.  But for smartphone - yeah - vacuum tubes not really the best technology for the job.  Rather we have these slightly more reliable and solid state transistor - which many would consider the most important invention of all time - ahead of Small Pox vaccine, Penicillin and the wheel.  Just sayin.

If the Washington post wants to drive home a point about Apple being bad for killing a bill - they might not want to include quotes where people reminisce back to the days of the Vacuum tube and having to go to the drug store to check if that tube really is burned out.

Like last year - I am going to go over some of the changes in the Settings app from iOS 9 to iOS 10.

This is bases on the Settings App for the 12.9” iPad Pro the version with Cellular and Wifi.

First item is that Siri was moved from inside the General Category and now is its own major category under settings.

The one option added in Siri - is the option to access on lock screen - you can now toggle that on or off.

Interestingly - Allow H E Y  Siri - which was previously selected - after update was turned off.

Under the General Category - the one new sub-cat is Dictionary.  By default American English and also Apple Dictionary is selected.

Under Handoff and Suggested Apps sub-cat - they added the option for Suggested apps to be Apps on the App Store.  Installed Apps is still there as well.

Under the Sub-Cat for Accessibility - there are a few changes.

    First under the Vision grouping.

It was these 5 options - Voiceover, Zoom, Invert Colors, Grayscale and Speech.

Now it is is these 5 options - Voiceover, Zoom, Magnifier, display accommodations and Speech.

Magnifier Quote lets you use your device’s camera to quickly magnify things.  When enabled, triple-check the home button to start Magnifier unquote

Under Display accommodations - Invert Colors is now moved - and you have the options for Color Filters - which can be used to differentiate colors by users who are color blinds and aid to users who have difficulty reading text on displays.

and under Display accommodations is also reduce White Points - which reduces the intensity of Bright Colors and used to be under Increase Contrast.

For Speech - there is now a new sub-cat - Typing Feedback - and under this sub-cat are the features - Characters, Character hints, Speak words, Speak Auto-text and Hold to speak Predictions - all of these can be toggled on or off - all are off by default.

A few changes for Accessibility - but not much changes.

Under Keyboards - they added a sub-cat - Hardware Keyboard - This lets you pick the type of Hardware keyboard you are using.  Choices they give are US, US International-PC, ABC extended, British, French, German, Spanish - ISO, Italian, Belgian, Dutch,  Dorn, Dvorak and Colemak.

Yeah - Stretching a bit to find differences under Settings General.

Under the main category for Notifications - in iOS 10 - The Notification View Options are gone - they were Sort Order - and also Group by App - both options are no longer under Notifications.

Under Safari - there is now the option for Check for Apple Pay - which is a simple toggle on / off switch.

Home is a brand new major category and this is some options for that new app.  1. is Use iCloud - iCloud and home kit must be enabled when signed into an iCloud account.

    2. Use this device as a home hub - quote using an apple tv or iPad as a home hub allows automation, remote access of your accessories and provides more powerful users permissions.  iPad must remain in the home and be continually powers on for these features to work unquote

    and

    3. Rest homekit configuration

I will stop there per the Settings change and next time I will pick up at the music App settings and finish up from there.

    quote

I think out of yesterday's announcements one thing I'm most looking forward to is Swift Playgrounds. Even though I'm an adult and it is tailored towards kids, I think there can be some valuable learning potential via that app. Plus it runs on my iPad.

    Hi Rob,

iOS 10 did not really wow me and the  Apple Music did not wow me ether. They focus to much on iMessage. But hopefully when the beta is over with I'll like it. I wish 3D Touch would of came to the iPhone 6. But hay what can you do 😒

    Regards,

    Sharde

    Hi Rob

Ok I like a couple of things in iOS 10 the dark mode and with  Apple Music I like that you can read the lyrics to the song that your listening to. So I guess iOS 10 will grow on me.

    Regards,

    Sharde

    Hi Rob,

Sad to have to leave you iOS 10 but it was rough while we were together. You kept shutting down in me. Good to be back on familiar ground. 9.3.2 now feels like a breath of fresh air. My home and power buttons are sore from hard resets

    Regards,

    Tosin O

    Hi Rob,

Here is a sorely needed new feature of iOS 10.  Hearts on thumbnails of Favorited photos!

    Regards,

    Steven Whatley

    Hi Rob,

I went against my better judgement as well as your advice and put the iOS 10 developer upgrade on my main iPhone iPhone 6+. ......and the result of my recklessness is.....drum roll please.......

Flawless operation.  Maybe an improvement over 9.3.3 public beta 2.   I love the new features of iMessage and it could be the best argument for an android holdout such as my wife to come over to the right side when she can't get hand drawn love notes from hubby via text. :)

I have been putting iOS 10 through regular tasks with a smooth flow. I haven't had the unstable experience that was reported by some of the YouTube testers.

I also have installed iOS 10 on my iPad 4th gen and I was surprised to see that 10 really improved performance.

In closing, I will not suggest that everyone go out and install 10 on their main iPhone/iPad, I would suggest that you do so on a secondary device.

To sum it up, do as I say, not as I do!

    Or

    I got lucky.......AGAIN!!!

    Regards,

    Shane C

    Hi Rob,

I wanted to give you the 5 Days Later update.

We have installed iOS 10 on 3 devices so far.  Our son’s iPad Air 2, My iPad (4th Gen) and my iPhone 6+ and here are the results.

iPhone 6+ - 1.9Gig Download - Biggest out of the 3 models we tested.

For the most part, runs great with the odd bit of gumming up opening up apps.  Not a big deal for me.  However at times when you are pushing the cpu, it sort of goes into this kind of reboot process for about 30 seconds. The screen will go dark with that little spinning flower type thing as if you’re shutting it down then will go right back into the screen asking for your passcode however you can just use your finger print to unlock the phone.  So far, this has happened to me about a half dozen times with fairly heavy use.

Although it doesn’t bother me to the point of regretting the upgrade, I would suggest that the average user may wish to wait until the public beta release next  month before dipping their toe into new flavour of Kool-Aid.   However if you’re like me and don’t mind the odd glitch and enjoy having bragging rights, then this is the upgrade for you.

For me, the biggest change is not having to swipe right to access the lock screen.

    iPad (4th Gen) - 1.4Gig Download???

After 5 days of moderate usage, I can say that iOS 10 runs really good on it.  To me, it runs as if 10 was a fresh install. My son was disappointed that Swift Playgrounds was not installed on this older iPad.

    iPad Air 2 - 1.8Gig Download

My son has been testing this very heavily.  He loves it.  Runs really well and to his delight had the Swift Playgrounds app on it.

    Summary & Final Thoughts

Depending on your personality and use of your iOS device, thought should be put into doing any sort of upgrade, especially when its a developer edition.  If you’re job or safety or communication with rest of the world depends on your device, you’re not much for trouble shooting, you like things to be absolutely predictable or have a Homer Simpson like temper, please hold off the upgrade.

However, if you like to show how in you are with Apple to your friends, you don’t mind taking the odd glitch in the name of progress this maybe the upgrade for you.

Thank you and I looking forward to show 0396.  Enjoy your weekend/week.

    Regards,

    Shane C

    iphone-software-automatically-show-224152653.html

It sounds like one new feature added in iOS 10 is the one my wife has been waiting for.  And that is in iOS 10 it automatically knows where and remembers where you parked your car and show you where in Apple Maps your car is located.

In theory this makes sense - it can tell when you are driving vs when you are walking - it can tell when someone parks their car and gets out of the car based on the motion sensors - and it just then flags your location.  no more will my wife be going through parking lots holding down the alarm button hoping to trigger the alarm on the car.  Now she will just need to open the maps app and it will lead her right back to her car.  This is one of those features she might even let me put a beta on her phone for.

I am being kind when I say she has lost her car a few times in a parking lot.  And yes - she will openly admit it.

So this again will be one of those killer features that many people like my wife will love and depend on. Glad to see this one added.

    hide-apps-ios-not-delete-apps-ios/

On the last episode we said the bingo card got a check mark for being able to delete stock apps - well not exactly - seems when you tap on the little X for the stock apps that show the little X - you are not deleting the apps - you are just deleting the User data associated with the App and then hiding the App icon from View.  The actual App binary does not go anywhere and you don’t save the space you thought you were.  Sorry to all those with the 16 not close to enough storage GB devices out there.   That said - of all the apps you can delete - Apple claims together they only use 150 MB of storage.

The complete list of Stock Apps that can be hidden are:

    Calendar

    Compass

    Contacts

    http://www.computerworld.com/

    article/3085542/apple-ios/wwdc-12-

    ios-10-features-you-probably-didnt-

    know-about.html

There is a certain type of article that comes out this time each year - and it is the X number of new iOS X features you don’t know about.

And already there were a bunch.  I will try to cover one or so each week - as there are a bunch of new features.

First up is from Johnny Evans at Computer world with the creatively titled - quote 12 iOS 10 features you probably didn’t know about unquote

Of course he then says he will offer up a bakers dozen and then actually has 14 different items.  So first things is first - counting is not Johnny’s strong suit.

First is what he calls getting there - and it has to do with getting to info via Notifications and Control center - and that apple is making it easier to get info or to short cuts without needing to unlock your phone - which by the way is so easy and fast now for the iPhone 6S, 6S+ and SE - that they needed to add raise to wake to those devices.

Next is Personal iMessages - we talked last episode about being able to send iMessages in your own hand writing.  If you saw my handwriting - my wife will tell you this is not actually a good thing.

The Calendar App - now iOS will suggest calendar events like meetings and places based on iMessage threads - Creepy.  And it can even offer times to leave and location suggestions based on data from both iMessages and email strings - really creepy.

That leads to Intelligence everywhere or Skynet as it is more commonly known.  This comes back to facial recognition - calendar suggestions - and even emoji suggestions based on what you typed - plus as we mentioned better situational suggestions on typing.

One not really talked about is what Johnny calls in the raw - where you can now edit photos in raw uncompressed image format.

The New Clock is much better - not only are there more features - but the UI is much better and more things are visible on one page.

There is better Storage optimization - which you know is needed for all those that recently purchased a 16 OH WHAT WAS I THINKING GB version.

Collaboration was another item he mentioned - and we mentioned that last episode briefly - and it is nice now in Notes you can simultaneously collaborate on a notes document.  He also throws in Side by Side Safari multitasking - really bringing his list up to 15 items now.

Here is a neat feature - Unsubscribe - iOS 10 lets you unsubscribe from annoying newsletters with just a couple of taps - no need to visit a website - where they try to trick you into signing up for 3 more newsletters as you try to cancel one.

Spam Alert for Phone calls was mentioned - but that was clearly gone over in the keynote.

For those with 3D touch - you can change the intensity of the flashlight based on how hard you are pressing the icon in the control center dock - cool.

You will now be able to access the desktop and documents folders of your Mac running Mac OS Sierra from an iOS device using iCloud drive.

Where my Car - as mentioned before - a nice new feature my wife will love.

And Accessibility.  And he mentions the Apple Watch Activity app being optimized for WheelChair Users.  I would say though compared to past years - there we less new Accessibility features added this year.  But maybe that is just because so many have been added the last few years - they are not stretched on what else to add.  It is bad enough they move things around.  Which is one reason I go over where things are added and moved to earlier.  Hopefully that helps those using voice over for example and looking for the Siri controls - rather than searching all over General for where it is moved - now you know it is broken out as its own item.

    Hi Rob,

Per Boll & Branch - Okay: now I believe you. Why didn't you mention what's in the article?

    Regards,

    Bill

Hi Bill thanks to the link to the article about the founders of Boll and Branch.  In short it goes over their search for sheets that were created with cotton sourced from farmers that were well compensated and the factory workers well treated.

How they worked to create a supply chain the improves the lives of the farmers and factory workers - not one that exploits the workers.

And to use Organic cotton for both ethical and texture reasons.

As I have said on the show before - Boll & branch sheets are the best feeling sheets you will own and ones you can feel good about owning.

Go to Boll and Branch Dot Com today for 20% off your entire order.  And use promo code TII.

Again that is Boll and Branch Dot Com.  Promo code TII.

These sheets are only sold online at boll and branch dot com - you can’t buy them in any stores.  That is how they keep the pricing low and free of markups.

But here is the best part - don’t take my word for it - try them out yourself for 30 days risk free.  Boll and Branch is so sure your going to fall in love with their sheets that they give you 30 nights to try them out.  If you don’t love them for ANY reason - they will take them back and refund you without any hassle at all.

They also have towels - and the ones I purchased for my Wife are by far the best towels in the house - plus they have other cotton products.  Yes - I am a customer of Boll and Branch.

Go online to Boll – that’s  B-O-L-L and Branch Dot Com.  and use promo code t i i  for 20% off your entire order: sheets, towels, blankets, duvet covers.. everything. Plus free shipping! And all their products come beautifully packaged in their signature boxes.

    Hi Rob,

Per the question about the issue with USB for a Car Stereo.

I quit using USB to car stereo because it would reset my music playlist to the beginning. It's a bummer sort of but using the aux jack you can vary the volume from the phone which you can't do on USB. Sometimes that's easier.

Installed iOS 10 on my 6s plus and I gotta say it's pretty good. A couple of bugs here and there but pretty good nonetheless. We'll see how it goes in the weeks to come. Who else has upgraded? What are your thoughts?

I might just wait for the public beta and hope that the version isn't too far behind the dev build.

I have not had any crashes of the phone 6S+ yet. I have had an app or 2 crash though. The phone feels a lot smoother than I expected for a beta though.

I have it installed on an iPhone 6S Plus as well as the large iPad Pro. 3D Touch makes it much more enjoyable on the phone though. 3D Touch is far more advanced on IOS10.

I will say this - HBO Now - no Beuno on the iPad Pro 12.9 inch - very flakey.

Martin did post this the next day

So the bugs mob iOS 10 so far for me anyway are

1-Springboard crashes when inserting a picture to a new iMessage.

2- springboard crashes when locking exposure in photo mode.

3- random reboot while on a phone call. ( bummer )

Looks like I'm gonna go back to iOS 9 until the final release.

Folks - Past experience has shown for these betas - if you need your device for work and travel - best not to install the first 3 or 4 betas.  Since I will be traveling a bunch - it will be at least Beta 5 before I update my iPhone to iOS 10.  My iPad Pro - I will somehow live with the issue and hope HBO Now app gets an update or works when beta 2 comes out.

If you are someone that likes thing perfect and with no issues - yeah good  luck with that on any release.  But forget about it completely with betas.  or even the first Gold master for 10.0.   Really 10.1 will be for those of you that don’t like issues.  That said if you are a dev and need to do some testing - it is not so bad as far as first betas go - still would NOT put this on my primary device however.

As you can now, you can very likely still stay secure in iOS 10 by turning off access to features from the lock screen. I have disabled all of them in iOS 9.

With Touch ID so easy, I just unlock with a quick thumb touch.

But, yeah, I too was not excited by the lock screen stuff in the keynote.

    From Karthik M

I too have disabled most of the content from the lock screen. The whole idea of the Touch ID when it first came was the ease to get across the lock screen. It looks like they are trying to make the lock screen the new Home screen.

I will say this - I can already see me talking about multiple articles in October / November / December - about how someone found some way around the lock screen because of all these added features - sure you can turn them off - but most just go with default settings.

As of June 18th - the  iPhone SE Space Gray model with 16 way too little storage GB version was only in stock at one store in Manhattan.  And if you order on line delivery was at 2 wks.

Will be interesting to see how long before we see another update to the 4 incher size.

    From John Poyser:

quote Removing headphone jack from the iPhone is dumb. I agreed with updating from 30-pin to Lightning. But removing the audio jack for the sake of a thinner phone is DUMB. I use Bluetooth headphones a lot - and I still want to keep the headphone jack for lots of reasons. Some of them are well captured in this article: unquote

And he is talking about an article titled - quote taking the headphone jack off phones is user-hostile and stupid unquote.

Which as you can tell from the article is one of those neutral pieces that will weight both sides of the argument equally.  Or not.

The article does make some great points - first is the issue of digital audio - and that means DRM - and the nightmares that come with it.  But really it is the dongle issue and more importantly the point that USERS are NOT - N O T - NOT asking for this.

And interestingly on the 17th - 4 days before this article came out - I received the following email:

    Hello Rob,

thanks for the great podcast. I am especially happy for the attention you give to accessibility being a Voiceover user myself.

Ever since I heard first rumours about Apple getting rid of the traditional headphone jack on iPhone 7, I have had been wondering how they are going to resolve following problems that this move would result in:

    1) How to use headphones while charging the device? If the phone has only a single Lightning port, it cannot be used simultaneously for charging and listening to e.g. podcasts.

    2) many people make music with their iOS devices, including myself. There are a number of great accessories that connect to iPhones and iPads through the Lightning port. If the device has only a single Lightning port, you cannot connect e.g. a better quality microphone  and headphones for monitoring what you record.

I suppose problem #1 could be resolved by using wireless headphones, but especially for Voiceover users this would decrease usability considerably as most of the wireless headphones available have some degree of latency when transmitting the audio from the device to the headphones, and this delay makes it very cumbersome to e.g. input text with Voiceover.

Moreover, you just cannot use wireless headphones for monitoring your recordings, especially if you are making music with multiple tracks.

In short, because of these rumours this is the first time in years I am not as thrilled about upcoming new iPhones as before.

    Best regards,

    Kimmo Saaskilahti

    Tampere, Finland

Thanks Kimmo for your feedback and John for the link to the article from the Verge.

    iphone-7-headphone-jack-rumors/

Ok - now that most rumor sites have settled into the belief that the headphone jack for the iPhone 7 is dead - as in D E A D - gone - no more - kaput - Mac Otakara just released a post that says - it is well only mostly dead - and actually will be in the iPhone 7 after all.

Some are suggesting Apple is backing down on the plan to remove the headphone jack as they see some of the backlash to a couple of Android phones that were announced that are sans the headphone jack - and also from articles like that on the verge and emails like those from Kimmo - it is possible Apple is listening and saying you know what - lets not give our users a reason NOT to upgrade.

So one camp is the Sans Headphone jack camp -  and a new camp is the No it will have the Headphone jack.  What if there was a third camp altogether.  What is Apple baby stepped into this sans headphone world - and released the iphone 7 - where it supported digital audio out via the Lightening port - and even provided the adapter - but also had the analog 3.5 MM headphone jack - but rather than provide wired earbuds - provided wireless earbuds.   Where you have the option to buy the wires analog headphones.

So give people the ability to see what can be done with digital audio out - but keep the analog jack for one more generation.  That would be an interesting play.  Expect more about this part of the rumor in weeks and months to come.

    Hi Rob,

Yeah currentC payment is dead and put to sleep!

Yes - we are moving from a mostly dead story - to a finally fully dead story - and that is CurrentC - which when we recently reported could say it was mostly dead - now it is officially dead or will be on June 28th - that is when CurrentC told its beta testers it is suspending all its current beta test and postponing all future releases.

It was always dead man walking and on the 28th of June walking it will be doing no more.

Can’t say we will miss it or are at all surprised.

It was a solution that never had the end users in mind.

    Hi Rob,

I am curious if any other listeners have commented about battery usage on their Apple Watch since the last WatchOS update.  My Watch is consistently using 25% more battery power now.  And today, my wife commented that her Apple Watch ran out of power at 2 PM after being on her Apple charging stand all night.  I have rebooted my Apple Watch twice thinking this could help.   However, this was to no avail.

Any thoughts from you or your listeners is appreciated.

This week for a kickstarter project we have another one of those you spell worst than a 2nd grade projects.  It is the Smartkase - spelled - S M A R T K A S E - one word.

This one had a modest goal of $5K and has raise over $15k - congrats.  You have until July 15th at 1:29 PM CT to fund the SmartKase.  And what is the smartkase you may be wondering or even if you are not - here is what they said

    Quote

Smartkase is the next generation mobile case that will alert you if you forget your phone, find your phone if you have misplaced it, trace your phone if its lost or stolen & protect your screen from bumps & falls. It also has a built in Tracker & a Sound Notifier that will prevent you from loosing your phone. Smartkase is linked to a controller which is designed in the form of a keychain. The controller has an inbuilt sound notifier which will alert you if your phone & the controller are separated by a distance of 4 meters

    unquote

This is nice for all those that have ever put their phone down to get a cup of coffee or pay a bill and turned and walked away.  Honestly this is something the Apple Watch should be able to do.  You get x feet away from your phone when you are not at home and it should start vibrating like crazy - and maybe be able to do the same for when you are at work as home - kind of if you are out side a specific geo fence - for home or work and get X feet away from your phone the Apple watch starts vibrating - if that is not a feature in Watch OS 3 - maybe with background apps one of you listening could write that.

Sorry - Back to Smartkase - hey it is funded - they don’t need my love.  Any way it will cost $40 for a case and controller and is supposed to ship in October 2016.

They claim this case is available for everything from the iphone 5S to the iPhone 6S+ - and will also do the iPhone 7 and 7+ when available.

Search for SmartKase - with a k at kickstarter dot com.

Back on Ep 358 the kickstarter project we featured was the Helix - from the show notes for that day it was described as quote

Here is a newer kickstarter project I thought was neat and it only has a goal of $7,500 - and am actually surprised it is not funded yet.  It is called Helix. So what is this unique device - well essentially it is a storage / dock for your Apple Watch cord and charger.  What you do is wrap your charging cord around the charger - and the slip it all into the case - and you have a compact little device where you can plug directly into the wall to charge - and it is ideal for travel or freeing up clutter. unquote

Well it never did get funded - but that did not stop the developer from pushing forward and now the Helix is available for $20 at Standout.com - Link in the show notes.

And they were nice enough to send me one - and it does exactly what I thought it would - it keeps everything nice and clean and is great for traveling or just plugging in where you don’t want a lot of clutter.

Thanks to Brandon for sending me this to test - it is in my Laptop bag now as I have a bunch of travel coming up the next few months - and I just love how it keeps everything nice and neat in my laptop bag.  If you were someone that tried to fund the Helix and were bummed you did not get it - now you can - look for the Helix link in the show notes for ep 396 at today in iOS dot com .  I am sure I will be talking about this more as I travel a bunch over the next 4 months.

    guidelines/App-Review-Guidelines-

    The-Comic-Book.pdf

Time to put down the Kool-aid.

We have talked many times about the issues with getting Apps approved or through the approval process - it is often very subjective depending on who is looking at your app and when.  Kind of like when you were in High school taking your driving exam - have an early morning appointment on a Monday or Tuesday and if the person giving the exam had a good weekend - you are likely to pass.  Have the exam on a Wednesday or Thursday afternoon late and the person just found out their significant other was cheating on them - yeah you are toast.  It is that type of subjectivity in with the review process for Apps that has many calling the process comical at best.  Well evidently the use of the term Comical - was used one time to many and then Apple in their great wisdom forgot there is a difference between Comical and Comic.  Because I kid you not - Apple Released a Comic book that goes over the App Review Guidelines.  Link in the show notes.  To say this belongs in the WTF were they thinking bucket way over values any other items in that bucket.

Because you know as a dev when you submit your app and have it rejected - nothing makes you feel better then going to a comic book with an oddly angry young girl in a plaid mini skirt saying 2.1 App Completeness.  What ????

This comic book is sooooo bad - you almost think it was a spoof. but it was not.

Seems Apple did a cross over between Marvel and overly tight Spandex theme to then a Dragon ball Z with every girl in plaid mini skirts look part way through the making of the comic book and then at the end crossed over in to some weird Crime Noir Dick Tracy feel.

And I am not even going to go where that last frame with the Women and horse together could possibly take us.  That would just be wrong on too many levels.  I will just say again - Apple given all the headaches you have put devs through on the inconstancies of the app approval process - Did you really stop and think this comic book was a good idea?  Really?  By the way - Comical and Comic books - yeah two different things.

I have a question about my LG tones that I use everyday with the iOS podcast app. When click fast forward or rewind it skips to the next or previous podcast on my playlist. Which quickly is to say that a jailbreaker has already jailbroken iOS 10 beta 1.  Not that it matters now as they will not release it until at least the GM is released - but at least it shows that iOS 10 as is - is still jail breakable.

Will be interesting to see if any future betas break the jailbreak.

Here's a piece of music recorded,  mixed & exported using:

MultiTrack DAW from Harmonicdog and Voice Record Pro 7 from Dayana Networks LTD

I recorded this using 5 tracks of acoustic instruments and mixing down with audio FX on Voice Record Pro 7 (a.k.a. VRP 7) and Multitrack DAW apps all on the iPhone 6S+ using the built-in mic and cheap ear buds for monitoring.

Voice Record Pro is an awesome little audio recorder which does a lot for audio recording, including many export & save options.

    Highly recommended.

If people like my music, they can go to my webpage ValesTales.com for more information and content from me, including my blog & upcoming podcast (stay tuned).

Thanks, Rob for all your great work on this podcast and for Podcasting in general.

““The Palm Pre Will Be an iPhone Killer”

Ross Catanzariti, PC World, 2 Apr 2009

So Analists and Technorati and Traditional Press all thought the PalmPre was an iPhone killer.  Well you can’t say Apple is not a unifier - Just Sayin.

    04:12

Before we start talking about iOS 10 and all the other things announced - I know some of you - many of you do have dev accounts - and if you are going to install iOS 10 beta 1 - you must - repeat you must download Xcode 8 and have it installed FIRST on your mac. before doing the install of iOS 10 beta 1 - if you don’t you will likely get error 14.

I know about this first hand.  I tried installing on my iPad Pro - and it kept giving me that error.

I then went and downloaded Xcode 8 - which is 5.9 GB and tried to install - it and then saw the message saying I needed to be running the latest version of OS TEN - El Capitan

Of course if I or others were patient we would have you know read that big warning on the top of the beta download page - which Apple cleverly worded with the following warning

QUOTE Important: You must have the latest beta version of Xcode 8 installed on your Mac before using a Restore Image to install iOS or tvOS beta software on a device.  UNQUOTE

Rob - just slow down and breathe.  So I can’t report first hand yet on this - as I need get this episode out before updating my Mac.  Something for this weekend - maybe.

Ok - and now to WWDC 2016 recap and highlight.

    05:44

To start with Tim came on stage in a very serious and somber note and talked about the mass killings in Orlando from the weekend and asked for a moment of silence. I will add my thoughts and prayers go out to all those that were killed and injured and their families.

After the moment of silence Tim went in to some highlights of WWDC.

There are over 5,000 Attendees and over 72% of the attendees are first timers.  I am not sure that is as positive a thing as Tim made it out to be.  There are many old time devs that would love to be there - but just can’t.

Attendees came from 74 different countries.  The youngest of the attendees was 9 years old.

The App store is now 8 years old - and it started with just 500 apps and today now has over 2 Million Apps.  All those apps have been downloaded over 130 Billion times

Tim was shirt Tucked in this time.

8 Minutes in Tim brought up Kevin Lynch - Also Shirt tucked in - and he came on to talk about WatchOS - or more specifically our first Bingo Card hit - he intro’d Watch OS 3 - Shocker.

First thing he highlighted was that it would be much much faster and be able to switch between apps that are active.

The key items he talked about to support the speed up in UI is

    1. Keep favorite apps in memory

    2. Background updates

    3. Refreshed info

    4. Instant launch

He showed an app launching on Watch OS 2 - with the typical lag and multiple seconds to launch - then he showed the same app in Watch OS 3 - and it was pretty much instantly launched - VERY VERY VERY NICE.

They added a very cool new feature Scribble - it allows for text entry one character at a time to give custom reply to messages.  NICE.

He also introduced Mini Mouse watch face to go with Mickey and a bunch of new faces and they are making it very easy to swipe between different faces so you can update your watch face to meet your mood or activity.

And one I am looking for - Quick start for WorkOuts - so you don’t have to reselect your work out length each time.

There is a new SOS feature - that will allow you to easily call 911 from your Apple watch when connected to your Phone or Wifi.  You activate it by pressing and holding the side button - not the crown.  And it will count down and let you know it is calling 9 1 1  - it will also work outside the US so for example in Hong Kong - it knows to call 9 9 9.

Once the call is made then your apple watch will display your medical info - so when first responders get to you - your info is available to them.

Jay then came out to go over some more features - he was un-tucked.

He talked about Activity sharing so - you and some friends can share their activity progress and even talk smack with each other.

They added Wheel chair support for the Apple watch for activity tracking and did a lot of work to make sure it works well regardless of how you push on the wheels.

They introduced a Deep Breathing app option where you can track your deep breathing each day.  And can now make that one of those things it reminds you to do - like when mine pings me when I have been sitting too long - It tells me to stand up and get a cookie.  Now if you have not been breathing deeply recently it will ping you to remind you to breathe.  Or at least get up and get a cookie.

At the end of the Watch OS 3 segment - Kevin came back to recap and a couple of the items on the recap slide were very interesting.

The key is that Devs will get much more powerful API’s to use with their apps.  Apple Pay for your app if it uses payments.  Background functionality for Fitness apps, including real-time heart rate monitoring.

But the one he showed but did not mention - Speaker Audio - so now you could play audio from your speaker on your Apple watch.

Beta of Watch OS 3 is available Today.

The whole Watch OS segment took about 20 minutes.

    10:38

The next Segment was for TV OS - Eddy Cue then came on stage to talk Apple TV and TV OS. Untucked by the way.

There is now 1,300 Video Channels on Apple TV - vs 80 channels in Apple TV 3rd gen.

Some of the new Apple TV 4th gen apps / channels include Sling and NBA 2k and more.

But the big update is for the Apple TV Remote App - now the Apple TV Remote App will mirror all the features of the Siri remote.  Anything you can do on your Siri Remote - you can now do on the Apple TV remote on your iphone - plus also get the keyboard.

Siri for Apple TV is improved.  You can now search movies by Topics.  Siri now searched over 650,000 Movies and TV shows.

But you can also ask Siri to search Youtube.  Like Search Youtube for french bull dogs riding skateboards

Plus you can also ask siri to show you live TV as well.  Such as open Espn 2 - if you have that app installed.  You just say watch ESPN 2 - and it will open it right to it.   Live Tunein will also work with iPad and iPhones as well via siri.

But the best announcement from Eddy came with the issue we all have - when launching one of the premium channels for the first time - which you need to follow a bunch of steps to authorize the Video channel - via going to your computer and entering an activation code.  Not anymore.

Introducing - Single Sign-on.  You sign in once - and you get access to all your premium apps.  And there is a page that shows all the apps you have access to.

For devs he talked about some new kits available - Replay kit - which allows you to record video of the session for replay later.  Photokit to get access to iCloud photo library. Home kit for accessing devices at home. There is now 4 game controller support.  Plus Bluetooth accessories tools for Devs.

The Apple TV and TV OS continue to get more valuable.

Beta of course available today for Devs and for everyone else in the Fall.

The Apple TV segment lasted 7 minutes in length - vs 20 minutes for Watch OS - to put them in perspective.

Next up was OS TEN - and Craig Federeguie - Tucked.

First up is the name - and as rumored - OS TEN - is now Mac OS

And this version of Mac OS is fittingly Sierra for this version.

Fittingly because Mac OS now has Siri support.

I will not go over all Mac OS or most Mac OS features - but there are some that allow you to go cross devices.

First up is Auto Unlock - This is nice in that if you have your Apple watch on - and open your mac - it will know you have the Apple watch and will unlock it - no need to enter a password.  Which means hey I could now add a password to my Mac Book Pro - which I have never done for when it is asleep - just for when it reboots.

Next up is universal Clipboard - yes you can copy some text on you iPhone and paste right on your mac.  Nice

Apple Pay for Mac - you can now use it when buying on line.  Now when online there will be a pay with Apple pay button and you will be asked to authenticate the purchase - so you touch on your iphone with touch ID and that is it. Also you can do that with Apple Watch as well for Authentication.

Obviously Merchants first need to add the Apple Pay button and many big names have agreed to do so.

Right now Apple Pay is available in 6 countries. In the next few months it will be coming to Switzerland, France and Hong Kong.

Mac OS Sierra is available today for Developer Beta - and in July for a public beta - and of course in the fall for everyone else.

Requirements are - Late 2009 or later MacBooks and iMacs,  2010 or later Macbook Air, Macbook Pro, Mac Mini and Mac Pro.

    Free upgrade of course.

Total segment for Mac OS was 15 Minutes vs 7 Minutes for TV OS and 20 Minutes for Watch OS.

    15:44

You have heard me say it before On the nights or really early mornings I record the kids go sleep with mom - and I go and sleep in my Son’s Casper bed.  Kind of my reward for a long night getting out the show.

Casper Mattresses are a mix of Latex foam and Memory foam. No noisy springs to wake up your significant other when you get up to sneak a snack in the middle of the night or in my case when I slip in late at night.

And with Casper you get a 100 day risk free trial period.  You don't like it you get your money back and they come and pick it back up and donate it to a charity.

But just as important as quality is Pricing and the pricing is really great.   Twin Mattresses are just $500, they also have Twin XL for $600, Full for $750, Queen for $850 and then King and Cal King - for  $950.  That is less much much less than my iPad Pro setup.  And as I said you have 100 days to return it risk free. And if you go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code tii - you will save $50 off those prices -   Terms and Conditions Apply.

This is an american made mattress with delivery right now for the US and Canada only and it is free delivery. And When said mattress is delivered - it is from UPS - in a squarish box that you think no way is there a mattress in there - But you get a cool little tool to cut open the package and the mattress opens up and expands to form.  It is really cool Just google Casper Mattress unboxing.

And with Apple TV and all the new features - you know you are going to spend more than a 1/3 rd of your life in bed - is it not worth getting the best nights sleep possible - and that is what you will get with Casper.  Again to Save $50 off of the prices I mentioned go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code t i i - all lower case on the promo code.  again casper dot com / tii - promo code tii to save $50 - thanks Casper for the great mattress for my show nights and for sponsoring this show.

    17:47

Finally there is iOS and the new iOS 10 features - and yes it will be called iOS 10.  Craig stayed on stage to talk about this as well.

Not only are iOS and MAC OS coming closer and closer - the same person is the primary presenter.

Craig said it is a “huge release for our devs” and the biggest iOS release ever for users.

And to stay with the iOS 10 - theme - it went over 10 key new features or updates.

First off was User Experience as a whole.

The Lock Screen has been redesigned with rich notifications and quick interactions with Apps - and of course expanded 3D Touch features.

There is now raise to wake.  It lets you see you what is on your lock screen - so you just raise the iPhone up and it wakes up and shows you what is on your lock screen.  Which is nice when you accidentally unlock it by touching the home button and you miss a notification you had waiting - like the new episode of Tii being available.  Many of the new features in the lock screen require 3D touch.  But there are some others that are for all - such as pulling up control center - and swiping left to see the controls for audio apps.

You can now get to your Camera app even faster - from the lock screen just swipe to the left and your camera comes right up - no more searching for the Camera icon on the bottom right and trying to pull it high enough to launch the camera - just swipe to the left - and the camera app shows up.

And from the lock screen if you swipe to the right you now get to your widgets.

Once you are unlocked - 3D touch will add new features to stock apps - where you can 3D touch on them to get some previews of activities.

Sorry folks - no locked folders and not locked down apps.  So cross of Password protected Apps on the bingo card.

Number 2 on the top 10 list of new iOS updates is - Siri.

Craig said Siri handles 2 Billion requests a week from users - but I wonder what the numbers would be if she got it right the first time for most?

The key thing is Apple is opening up Siri to Devs.  Which is great - because it is a box on the Bingo Card.   Siri SDK.

Which is nice for example you can tell siri to start a Skype call and even do that via Car play.

Number 3 - Is QuickType - They are adding deep learning to be able to predict what is the next word that should be in the sentence.

And it will recognize the language your are typing in and update automatically.

Number 4 - Is Photos - Face Recognition - done on device.  And you can get albums set up for each face.  There is also Object and Scene recognition for better searching.

There is better grouping of Photos based on Topics, Locations, People, Trips - they call it memories.

Eddy Cue came back to talk about items 5, 6 and 7.

Number 5 is Maps - because you have to updates to Maps each year.

ALL New design - because yeah that will not cause issues.

It is now easier to see what is around you restaurant wise and even select different types of restaurants.

In Navigation - it now shows you traffic on your route. and you can pan and zoom ahead to see what those traffic conditions are.  And you can see food or gas stations near your route.  Of course this all carries over to Car Play.

Apple is Opening Maps up to Devs.  This means you will have many more features available depending on the Apps you have installed and that connect with Maps in the future.

Number 6 was Apple Music App - All New Design for the app from the ground up.

Number 7 was Apple News - There are now over 2,000 publications in Apple News.  There are 60 Million Monthly Active users of Apple News - that is about the same size as the monthly users of Podcasts.

As with Maps and Music - there is an all new design.

For you is now broken up. The sections are Top Stories, Trending, Topics, And then new topics based on what you read.  And then featured stories.

And they are introducing Subscriptions - so you can get premium content right inside of News.

And there is breaking news notifications as well.

Craig came back for Number 8.  Which is a bingo Card item from WWDC 2015 that did not happen.  And that is the Home Kit app called - Home.

Which of course is for managing all your home kit accessories in one app - that is on your home screen.  You get to see all your accessories in one place and customized in the layout for you.

And you can also get to Home Kit from control center as well.  So makes it easy to quickly and easily get to the Home App to say - see who is at the door.

Additionally it will work with your Apple TV to be secure point of access to your home kit accessories even when not home.

And it also works with the Apple Watch.

Number 9 - Is the updates to the Phone App.

And the biggest one is Voice Mail transcription of calls right in the voicemail message screen.

There is a way to filter out Phone spam.

There is now a VOIP API - which allows those apps to be on your lock screen and in your contacts as the primary way to call.

Number 10 and the biggest update is Messages.  Apple claims it is the most frequently used apps.  There is now Rich Links - which now shows more than just the link.

When you select the camera it brings up right away what is in front of your camera - and Craig had his best comments here - ripping the folks in Marketing for thinking having a bunch of cute young 20 somethings is something someone would see when they bring up their camera.

They have made emoji’s 3 times bigger in the transcript.

    They are adding emoji predictions.

And after you type a message you can have it emojified by having it highlight words where emoji’s would work and you can tap and replace those words with emoji’s.  Poor Mignon must be going crazy with these changes.

There are also bubble effects now for your message bubbles.

You can make the message bigger or smaller - you have an option for invisible ink - where the message is private and then you slide across with your finger and it reveals the message.

You can give a thumbs up for a message.

And there is now a hand written message option.

    And sketches for messages.

And there are full screen effects.

Obviously these are effects between two iOS devices.

And Apple is opening up the API’s to Devs.

So yes - the box where it had Dev Access to private API’s - yes - check that one - lots of access this time around for many private API’s.

And those are the top 10 updates to iOS 10.

There were a few others mentioned that did not make the top 10 including Notes Collaboration,  live Photos Editing, And Split view in Safari for iPad to allow two different Safari Windows open at once - thank you.

Some select others that quickly flashed on the screen but were not talked about include

Read Receipts by conversation in iMessages

    Location suggestions in Calendar

    Discover on iBooks

Apple Pay also in Mobile Safari

    Improved auto Enhance in Photos

    New iPad Camera UI

    Avoid Tolls in Maps

    Mailbox Column

    Bed Time Alarm

    Sort Favorites in News

Male and Female Siri voices for Russia, Spain and Italy.

Side by Side Mail compose on iPad

Air Quality in Maps for China - surprised The Government in China allowed that one

And finally faster Attachment sending in Messages

And I am sure there are even more that were not talked about or put up on the screen.  And I was surprised by the lack of any accessibility features for iOS being talked about or even listed.

And Them Craig - checked off another box for us on the bingo card.  Privacy and security.  He talked about end to end encryption.

And then talked about differential Privacy - how apple can do machine learning while keeping all persona data secure.  quote Great features and Privacy. unquote

Dev Beta available today,  Public Beta in July and full release in the fall.

Per devices getting iOS 10 - and to see if you are getting it - first does your device have a 30 pin dock connector?  Yes - then you do not get it.

If your device has a lightening port and is an iphone - you are getting iOS 10.  If it is an iPod touch - and it is 5th gen - you will not get it.  If it has a lightning port and is the original iPad Mini - you are not getting it.  All other iPads with Lightening ports will.  So really just iPod Touch 5th gen and iPad Mini - 1st gen are the only Lightening port devices not moving up to iOS 10.

The whole iOS 10 section ran 55 Minutes vs 20 Minutes for Watch OS, 15 Minutes for Mac OS and 7 Minutes for TV OS.

Then Tim Cook came back out with one more announcement for Developers.  And this is one I am excited about it is Swift Playgrounds for iPads.  This is a free App just for iPads and those on iOS 10 only.  And the app is designed for kids to help them learn to program in Swift. Of course it is also for adults as well.

I will be talking more about this on future episodes - as I am going to work with my Son on this.  But to me - this is probably the biggest news of the event and one that will bring the longest term benefits for Apple and the iOS ecosystem.

    http://www.phonedog.com/2016/06/13/

    ios-10-delete-preinstalled-apple-apps

Lets look at the Bingo Card for a few minutes.

First off the ones that clearly happened.

iOS 10 and Watch OS 3 announced.

Siri Comes to the Mac - twice - seems I had two boxes with that option - ooopps.

    Siri SDK

    Improved Siri Features

    No Hardware at all introduced

    Home Kit App

Those are all clearly ones that happened

Then there was the Security - Security - Security box - I think that is a hit.

As is Dev Access to Private API’s - lots more access to stock apps than in the past.

iOS 10 for All lightening devices - nope - did not exactly meet that spec - the iPod touch 5th gen and iPad mini ruined that one.

But Ability to Delete Stock Apps - that was not mentioned in the keynote - but and this is a big but - those already downloading the beta are reporting some key stock apps are available to be deleted.

The Weather App, Mail app, Music App, Notes App, Calendar App, Compass, Clock, Stocks and Reminders are deletable as well.  As is the Podcasts App and iBooks according to others.  I will go over all those that can and can not be deleted for sure on the next episode.

But it looks like most of the stock apps are deletable and that would mean - a yes for that box.  Sadly no bingo this time even with it.

As Apple Pay with iMessages for individual payments did not come to pass.

Other items that were a big no include:

Ability to password protect Folders or apps.

    New Macbook

    New Apple Watch 2

quote >200 new features for iOS 10 unquote  No one said the number of new features.

    Customization of Control Center

Siri will be hub for home kit

Select who can get a read receipt in iMessage

    Advanced Parental Controls

    Multi-user Support for iPads

    Apple Pay rewards Program

All those items clearly a no.

    Then there was

Control which Apps are default Apps - well maybe a no and I say maybe - as if you delete the mail app and only install a single 3rd party mail app - what happen when you click a link to launch mail?  Does that by default make the only mail app the default app.  I would imagine so.  But we have some testing to do on this to see.  Same with Maps app and the other deletable apps.

    announces-major-app-store-

    changes-here-are-the-details/

Prior to the WWDC - Apple via Phil Schiller announced that one of the changes coming to the App store was additional use of Subscriptions and then a modification of subscription split over time. It would be 70/30 split to start - then if a subscriber was still active on that subscription after a year it will go up to a 85/15 split of revenue.

The bigger change however is not the adjustable split - but that subscriptions will be allowed in more places.  Originally Apple was very very selective where they would allow for Zombie subscriptions.  That is subscriptions that auto renew until the subscriber kills it.  Zombie subscriptions are one of the best revenue generators period. Sure you can get someone to make a one time purchase - but if you spend the same effort and get them to subscribe - the revenue increased greatly over time.

Most people are just too lazy to cancel their subscriptions.

Another item coming to the App store - and this one really surprises me - is search ads - in other words for App devs they can not pay for placement for search results.  I just don’t see that going well.  Apple said they will allow for anyone to participate - but I can’t see how they keep out all but those with deep pockets.

One of the things I always loved about iTunes - regardless of the store section - nothing being featured paid for said feature - it was all earned or at least hand curated and there was no pay for placement.  Now that is changing.  We shall see what happens.  But I guess with 2 Million Apps - it is very very hard to get noticed.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from STORM GARELLI ON June 8TH who posted the following

    Quote

    Oh no!

After the Smile Software TextExpander subscription debacle, the subscription disease now spreads to a whole new level.

This will be so bad for us users / purchasers.

OK, we all appreciate that small developers need to have a way to earn a sustainable income to enable them to stay in the game and keep writing better and new apps.

But the example cited in this article really leaves a sour taste in the mouth. They guy is already getting an annual income of $10m and he is now thinking that the new subscription model will enable him to collect 10x that!

People can't afford an ever-increasingly- large number of monthly subscriptions. This change means that buyers like me, who have historically bought loads of apps, will just be more discerning and buy (or subscribe to) much fewer apps.

I think this will work out very badly for Apple's customers, and ultimately most of their devs too.

    Unquote

To which there were a FEW replies.

    Steven Whatley replied

    quote

I have mixed feelings about this. If a US$29.99 app becomes a US$2.99/month app, that might be OK. Yes, in the long run, it will be more expensive to keep using the app (US$36/year). But, if I don't like the app, I can cancel the subscription. So, I'd only be out $3 instead of $30.

Right now, there are WAY TOO MANY dead apps in the App Store.

A subscription model might encourage devs to keep updating and improving their apps to KEEP subscribers thus more money coming in.

Another example, how many VNC apps have you bought? I have bought many. The main reason is the dev stopped supporting it. So, I would see a better and more up-to-date VNC app. Then that dev would stop supporting that app. And, so on and so on and so on

The user also needs protection. So, Apple needs to add another rule. If I subscribe to an app AND there are ZERO updates in 6 months, my subscription becomes FREE until there is an update. If the dev ONLY puts out piddly useless updates to keep the subscriptions going then I well be PO'ed and cancel my subscription.

    unquote

    Robert Spivak replied

    quote

This could be a really good thing - for both devs and customers. The devil is in the detail. Right now, there is a lot of confusion/discussion over whether a subscription still requires changing content (like a book, magazine, news publication) or services (like an cloud-based storage, processing, or gateway service) or can be "anything" (like providing a steady stream of new features/updates to customers.)

It was publicly announced there will be 200 levels of subscription pricing. That means there might even be YEARLY subscriptions in the $1, $2, and $5 range.

I agree that "share of wallet" will become more important, especially with lots of apps competing for $5/month space in my wallet, but if some simpler utilities/apps only want $1 to $5 per year, I would consider them "impulse buys" much like the current crop of decent low-priced apps.

In terms of the dev mentioned in the article that currently makes $10M a year is drooling over the possibility of making $100M a year... Well, I think that is certainly not the norm and the editor/writer probably make a quick call to someone he knew to get a juicy quote for the article, well.

+Fernando De Leon, in a way, yes. And, in a way, no. For, the 1st year, yes. After that, the benefits leans toward the devs.  not so good for us users cost-wise., though But, hopefully, overall, we will end up with better quality apps and stop this MyApp, MyApp 2, MyApp 3, etc. stuff. And, have fewer dead apps in the App Store.

Welcome to the show I am your host Rob and this is the Today in iOS podcast -  First up I want to thank GREG for sending in the music you hear in the background. GREG  wrote:

    Hi Rob,

You’ve been saying lately that you’re short on music, so I’d like to offer the attached mp3 to try and help you out. The title is “Down to Drown” by my son Joey.  He performs regularly in the Portland OR area at various venues and works giving music lessons.  “Down to Drown” was made with Garage Band which he pretty much uses exclusively since he can be a “One man band”  and do all the instruments and sing harmony with himself by recording and mixing multiple tracks.

    http://www.iosdaily.org/2016/06/apple-

    sends-out-press-invites-for-wwdc.html

Per WWDC Apple made it official when they sent out press invites stating that the WWDC keynote as expected will be held at 10:00 AM PT on Monday June 13th at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Fran - this is different than past years where the Keynote was at the Moscone West location - where the Rest of WWDC is held.  But again this was expected and rumored over a month ago.

Also as expected - My press invite was once more lost in the mail - Come on Simon Pope - can’t you get my address correct .  Well at least Microsoft knows where to send their invites to.  Just Sayin.

I know a few of you will be at WWDC - and for those of you going - remember - 206-666-6364 - that’s 206-moon dog.  And give me a call with any interesting things you hear or see at the event.

For those not going there will be a lot of content streamed via the WWDC app.  If you check you will see  the WWDC app from last year has an update available and it now has the schedule for 2016 in it.

On Monday it is the Keynote from 10:00 to Noon PT, Then from 2:00 to 4:00 is Platforms State of the Union  and then from 4:30 to 5:30 PM PT is the Apple Design awards.  All three events will be at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.

The Rest of WWDC will be back at Moscone West - sans the WWDC bash.

Tuesday kicks off with What’s new in Swift at 9:00 AM PT - and there are many many other sessions through out the week 308 according to the app - which again you can see each listed in the updated WWDC app now - regardless of if you are going or not.

And of course for those of you that are going - there is the Parties for WWDC app.  Which is free and a must have for any founder hounders out there. OOPpps - someone has been watching to many episodes of Silicon Valley. I means is essential for anyone going per the great Networking opportunities the parties present.  Yeah - that’s what you tell you boss that is sending you to WWDC when they see you downloaded that app.

    2016-rumors-apple-siri-hardware/

Lots of rumors swirling around about WWDC and what will or will not be announced.  Some earlier rumors were a new Apple Watch and a new Mac Book Pro to be announced - most recent rumors are no new hardware will be announced.  It will all just be on iOS, OS X, watchOS and tvOS during the keynote - and with 4 OS’s to go over - I can see why the latest rumor is picking up steam.  That said I put all three rumors on the Rumor Bingo card.

Per other items on the Bingo Card - iOS 10 and watchOS 3 will be announced.

Siri will come finally to Mac OS TEN

ApplePay and iMessages will come together to allow you to make direct payments to other individuals that have ApplePay.  Yes - Apples answer to Square.

There will be at some point someone saying over 200 new features to iOS 10 rumor I like to include each year.

I included my rumor / thought that iOS 10 will just be for any iOS device that has a lightening port - no lightening port no iOS 10.

Many are rumoring about a SIRI SDK for devs.

And greatly improved Siri features.  Hey how about getting the current ones like asking questions to work before adding more features - just saying.

Siri being a hub for HomeKit is one of those recent rumors.

I am still hoping for Advance Parental Controls

There is the rumor that Customization for Control center will be available.  But I think that is more a wish list than a rumor.

As is the rumor about being able to delete stock Apps

My personal wish list item is the Ability to password protect folders or apps. And by password protect - that can also mean Touch ID protect or passcode protect them.  Something where you can hand your iPhone to your kid or friend to play a game and they can’t get into Apps you don’t want them in.

Which brings us to SECURITY SECURITY SECURITY Improvements - I think with Apple v FBI - some new security features are surely on their way.

For iPad’s it would be nice to see Multi-User support - and this has been rumored - hoped for for some time.

Another rumor / wish item is the ability to control which apps are default apps.  So you can pick which browser opens when you are in an email and which email app is default as well.

A rumor that did not happen last year and falls over to this year is the ability to select which individuals can get a read receipt in iMessage and which individuals do not get it.

And another one falling over from last year is an Apple Pay Rewards Program.

Sticking with rumors from last year that did not happen there is also a HomeKit App and Devs getting access to private API’s.

And that rounds up the Rumor Bingo Card.  I already posted the bingo card and it is the post just prior to this episode so you will have it a week before WWDC.  It is a stand alone post in the Tii App and also at today in iOS dot com.  As always in those posts I will put in the items in plain text for those with screen readers.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from Robert Spivack ON June 1st who posted the following

    Quote

"Small things" Wish List for WWDC:

I would like to see future versions of iOS address 'annoyances' in addition to the tent pole new features:

iMessage - Improve iMessage to work like E-mail when used across multiple devices with continuity: When I read a msg on one device, it should be marked as read on all the other devices. When I delete a message on one device, it should be deleted from all the other devices. Make iMessage work like IMAP email. I am tired of reading/reviewing/deleting the same messages multiple times, yet I like using continuity to see my iMessages on iPhone, iPhone and Mac.

iOS Mail - Allow folders to be expanded and collapsed. I use lots of nested email folders (gatherer versus hunter) and it takes forever to scroll down through them to get to one far down on the list. I would like folders to have the rotating triangle widget like other apps do. I don't want to switch to 3rd party email apps, just want more capability.

    Unquote

To which there were a FEW replies.

    Daniel Reich replied

    quote

I agree with the iMessage syncing across all the devices.

Another feature I'd love is when I switch my phone to silent mode for the option of a timer or something to auto remind me to switch it back. Let us choose remind us never, 4 hours, 6 hours etc.

We can now lock notes. I'd love to lock photo albums with touch of. I'd also like tags. I can do tags and smart albums on my iMac. But they aren't in iOS.

    unquote

    Francisco Tapia replied

    quote

+Robert E. Spivack it appears to work that way on my device. If I answer an iMessage on my phone it clears it from my iMac. if I answer a message on my iMac it is marked as read within the iMessages app. What I find annoying is that the notifications don't always clear from the notification drop down panel. They do tend to clear on the lock screen though.

running ios 9.3.2 and osx 10.11.5 I'm not sure if that's why.

    Storm Garelli replied

    quote

I guess this is unlikely to happen in the age of Apple Music, but I'd love it if Apple would resume proper support for the older "Genius" playlist functionality in the Music apps on the iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV.

I'm not an Apple Music subscriber, but I do subscribe to iTunes Match and have a huge music library of my own. I really do miss the Genius functionality, which is not present at all in the Apple TV Music app, and now rarely works in the iPhone/iPad Music app. :-(

    and

    Daniel Reich replied

    quote

With the messages.. that's what I mean - the notifications don't clear. And if I delete a message from my bank on my iPhone, the message is still on my iMac and iPad. It might be marked read but it wasn't deleted.

Whatever is done one one device I like the others to match up.

I returned the pencil and got another, same problem so I returned iPad Pro as well. It is now two months later and I find that the most I've been able to get between pairings is 3 days. I just gave up and figured it's a "feature" ha.

I should qualify and explain that I guess I'm not technically re pairing, but rather I need to swipe up for the control pane and turn Bluetooth off and back on to get  Pencil to connect. But a few times I have had to connect the pencil to the Lightning port to fully re pair the accessory as well.

I'm now off to read the link to see if there's something new in there that might fix this for me.

    unquote

Nope Never have needed to do that - for me the Apple Pencil has been rock solid.  Maybe I am lucky or it works better with the 12.9 Inch iPad.

Here is an email on the Apple Pencil Repairing issue:

Hi Rob.  I have been using the Apple Pencil almost every work day for six weeks to take handwritten notes on my iPad via the Penultimate app. It works great.

I have had to re-pair the Pencil a couple of times during this period.  Has not happened enough for me to figure out the precipitating event and certainly not enough to be a hassle.

There are two issues that are of concern.  First is the charging level.  It has not been obvious to me yet how to know the charging level of the pencil while in use.  Also, the pencil charging adapter for the lightening charging cable is so small that I am afraid of losing it.  Would have been nice if Apple had included a small case to attach it to the charging cable.

Even though it is chargeable via the lightening port on the iPad, perhaps  the Pencil will be wirelessly chargeable in the future. That would be convenient.

    2/apple-rolls-out-ios-932-

    for-the-97-inch-ipad-pro

Late last week Apple rolled out iOS 9.3.2 again for the 9.7 Inch iPad Pro’s - so if you were one that had held off updating - good for you.

As always backup your device fully before updating and make sure you force quit out of all open apps.  And I still recommend doing a Reset Network settings after force quitting the open apps and right before updating.  Remember when you do that to log back into your wifi first - then do the upgrade.

PC Mag had an article on this saying Apple released some more support articles on the issues with updating.  And warned that if you are trying to do it wirelessly you may see a message about turning off your device waiting 10 seconds and then connecting it to a charger or mac and then to proceed with the update.

If you are doing the update via iTunes and get an unknown Error 9 Message - they say it is safe to click through and continue with the update and to stay connected to your computer until the update is finished.

Of course it goes with out saying you should make sure iTunes is updated to the latest version - ok - well actually I said it - and really I think is should go with saying - because not everyone knows that or remembers to do that first.  So make sure you update iTunes to the latest version.

Of course hearing all this you might just through your hands up and say I give up on iOS 9.3.2 for my iPad pro 9.7 inch version and really at this point who could blame you.

I will just say proceed at your own risk or better yet wait another week to see what other issues pop up for the 9.7 inch iPad Pro.  Just Sayin

    2016/06/03/apple-news-digest-leak-

    ios-iphone-7-iphone-8/

It was also another busy period for iPhone 7 rumors.

Once again more of those rumors are coming in that base storage levels will double across the board to 32 still not enough GB’s, 128 just right for most GB’s and 256 I have a new Baby GB’s versions.

The iphone 7 series will look mostly like the iPhone 6 series - with just moved antenna lines.

If true it almost certainly means not inductive charging - that would likely come with the iPhone 8 - which is expected in Fall 2017.  And is rumored to be curved glass from and back.  goodbye bumpies.

But being glass on the back will make it easier for inductive charging.

In theory Apple could do inductive charging with the current design by having the Apple Logo be the location where the cut out allows for inductive charging.  But that would be surprising at best if Apple did that.

the iPhone 8 is also rumored to sport an OLED display.

We are also starting to see lightening to 3.5 mm headphone jack adapters popping up on Chinese sites - it is possible they are just covering their bases incase Apple removes the headphone jack on the iPhone 7 - right that is a possibility - but a probability is they have some inside info and are rolling these out knowing they will be needed.

Another rumor per the 7+ is that it will sport 3GB of Ram - vs the 2GB for the 7 - which is the same as what is in the 6S and 6S+ now.

Rumors keep coming in that the 7+ will have a dual camera while the 7 will have a single camera sensor on the back side.

There will still be a camera bump on the back side for both devices.  Personally for the 7+ I would take a thicker device with a bigger battery and no bump - just saying.  Give me a device that is slightly thicker and last 24 hours of serious use and dual camera - oh yeah I upgrade in a HEART beat.

The Camera hole for the iPhone 7 appears to be larger leading to rumors of a better / larger camera - but saying the next gen iPhone will have a better camera is the same as saying there is a next gen iPhone.

Rumors of course are swirling about the iPhone 7 being waterproof - which really means much more water resistant - those rumors come from the many tests done on the iPhone SE which seems to be much more water resistant than any previous iPhone and more so than the Galaxy’s out there being dosed in champaign in commercials - because yes walking through a liquor store pouring champaign on your smartphone and then the floor is as real world as it gets.

Not only is it dumb and a waste of champaign - it is just really inconsiderate of the folks in the liquor store that have to mop up your mess.

of course removing the headphone jack in the iPhone 7 should also help to make it even more water proof than the aforementioned iPhone SE.

But with rumors spinning up about the iPhone 8 for 2017 being the radical new design - what is that going to mean to those of us with the 6+ being two years old in September - do we upgrade or not.

Those camera specs are really going to be a strong driving force behind my decision.  As will the internal CPU specs - which so far when it comes to the rumor mill - there is not much or anything substantial out there.  Just that it will be faster - you think.

Microsoft continues face the realities of their failing windows phone platform.  The cut another 1,850 jobs - most in Finland - and tied to the Lumia product line.

MS is also taking a $950 Million impairment and restructuring charge - hint not a good thing.

MS still plans to introduce new Lumia phones - it is just that they are tightening the ship and focusing on fewer models and key market niches. Or as MS CEO Nadella said last year - MS would quote sharpen its sights on fans, business customers and value-sensitive users.

To put things in perspective - Globally Windows Phone is now less than a 1% market share - sounds like they need a lot more fans.  just sayin.

    all-iphone-6-and-6-models

This weeks Kickstarter project is a product that looks like the Bumpies I so enjoy for my phone.  Which by the way you can get at utomic.com

But this kickstarter project goes by the title

quote Unique Screen Protection | All iPhone 6 and 6+ Models unquote

But their name is FlexPads except you can’t actually find them by their name - so you have to search for unique screen protection 3 words - nice.

This project has a goal of $10,000 and has raised $217 to date.  Ouch.

It has until Sunday July 10th at 2:11 PM CT to get the other 9,783 dollars.

The good news is for $10 you can get in on the early bird special.  That will get you 1 pack of 1 color.

These of course wrap around the corners of your iPhones and offer the protections when dropped.

However I do see an issue with their design - now as I look at it more - they fold over just the top and don’t see to protect the sides as well they are much more narrow than the bumpies.

I am actually going to recommend against these - not that they will get funded anyway - but because of the design - I do not feel it gives the same protection of the bumpies do or other similar designs do - they just made the corner cover much too narrow.

Sorry guys - best to pull your Kickstarter project and redesign and relaunch.

    http://www.applemust.com/cut-the-

    bs-devs-are-not-losing-interest-

    in-apple-watch/

Jonny Evans had a post titled  quote Cut the BS - Devs are not losing interest in Apple Watch unquote

The nexus of the article comes from a BS report from Realm suggesting devs are loosing interest in Apple Watch - based on date that does not actually suggest that.

Essentially there is some data that shows for every 1,000 new iOS apps being built there are 10 tvOS apps and maybe one Watch app.  Actually kind of surprised tvOS apps are that high.

So the REALM company took the difference in numbers to mean devs are loosing interest - but well of course less people are developing for Apple Watch - iOS apps are still the bread and butter.

Plus many are waiting for Watch OS 3 to see what new features are available.

Or as Johnny said not so nicely - any reporting that devs are loosing interest in Apple watch is pure and utter Bull expletive

Apple Watch regardless of what the naysayers want to say is successful - it captured 63% market share in the all import Holiday - 4th quarter of 2015.  It has already pulled in $2 Billion in Revenue in its first year.  and from survey’s conducted by Needham & Co - 62% of current Apple watch users plan to upgrade to a new Apple watch in the future.

That’s ok - because haters gota hate.  And Apple has plenty of those out there.

    VOICEMAIL - Chris_debrotie_feedback_xamiran_conference

    Hi Rob,

Purchased Apple Watch online, as we had to at the beginning , on May 12, 2015.

As you had mentioned, my visa was billed May 28, so I knew it was on its way!

UPS shipped to my door, and had delivery date of June 3rd, 2015.

Love the Apple Watch. Fast forward June 2016. June 2nd, to be exact.

Removed my Apple Watch from its night stand (love that feature as my alarm clock), and the ceramic hart rate monitor fell out, only being held by a cord.

Not wanted to lose my activity streak, I pressed it back in, continued with my day and ended up at the Apple Store later that night.

Big surprise to me, that the warranty, starts on the shipping/billing day, not the day you revived the product. Yep the warranty was out by two days. Cost, a flat fee of $400 something plus taxes. Apple care would have saved me $100.

Knowing I could prove the delivery date, I told them to go ahead. It is not fixed in store, so I will be getting a brand new one, I was told.

Called 1800 apple number explained, and they are waving the fee this one time only. So problem solved.

Next time I will drive the 30 minuets, so I know my dates for warranty for sure.

As a note: I believe the heat from the charging over night must warmed the glue that holds the ceramic hart rate. Over time it must become week, or dries out.

No screw were evident to hold it in place.

    Regards,

    Timothy

    1/amazon-prime-app-not-likely-to-

    appear-on-the-apple-tv-anytime-soon

The one app I miss on my current Gen Apple TV’s - yes plural - I just got one for my Den as well.  The kids were hogging the one in our bedroom to much.  Well the one App I really miss is Amazon Prime.  I mean I manage fine sorta - I just run it on my iPhone 6+ and airplay it to the Apple TV of my choice - but I would rather not have to do that extra step.  I would rather be able to use Siri to search for a show - and have what is available in Amazon prime be listed.  That is where it is a pain - I first search with siri - and hopefully the movie or TV show I am looking for shows up in Netflix or HBO Now or AMC or some other app Siri searches through - and if not - then I go on my iPhone and search via Amazon Prime - and then if I strike out - depending on the level of desire - I go and pay via iTunes for that show or movie.  But I would again like to see Amazon Prime as an App on Apple TV - but sadly some recent comments from Jeff Bezos does not make that look like a short term probability.

He said Amazon only wants to sell devices that support Prime Video and while quote "you can always get the video player on the device," you can't always get them on "acceptable business terms.” unquote.

When pressed if those terms involved Apple’s famous 30% cut - Bezos only would say quote "private business discussions should stay private.” unquote.

So for the foreseeable future at least it looks like search flow is ask siri to see if a show or movie is available - if it is only iTunes - then go to iPhone and search Amazon Prime app - and if not there - then go back to iTunes and purchase or search for something else and repeat.

Proof I am not the only snarky one in the Smartphone space.

I love this next story.  Sprint stole the Can you hear me now guy and just started running their own commercials with the same actor.

According to Paul Marcarelli the actor that played the Test Man from 2002 to 2011 for Verizon

quote "I used to ask if you 'can hear me now' with Verizon. Not anymore, I'm with Sprint now, because guess what? It's 2016 and every network is great. In fact Sprint's reliability is now within 1% of Verizon and Sprint saves you 50% over Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile's rates. Can you hear that? unquote

And that is not the real snakiness - it actually comes from Verizon that replied.

Quote "Sprint is using our 2002 pitchman because their network is finally catching up to our 2002 network quality, unquote

Hi Rob, was wondering if it was time again to explain who all those people are we hear in the introduction to each podcast. I know one of them is Steve Ballmer, but could you tell us who the others are? Thanks and keep up the good work.

    Regards,

    Ron in Toronto

Hi Ron - Yes - Steve Ballmer saying I like it a lot.  Which is pulled from Episode 0 of what was then Today in iPhone  - which if you have never listened to - it is worth a listen. And it still on the RSS feed.

Steve Ballmer is followed by Steve Jobs saying - Today in iPhone  - Which I debate internally on changing at some point to Tim Cook or Johnny Ive saying Today in iOS.  Just can’t bring myself to making that change.

There is of course the Hey Kool-Aid clip - which is my way of saying this is a fan boy podcast as Yes clearly I have drunk the Apple kool-aid

And then finally it is Sir Patrick Stewart - AKA Captain Picard or Pressor X or Gurney Halleck - +5 points if the latter reference is how you first think of him.  Yes That is Sir Patrick Stewart saying My Beautiful iPhone which I never have out of my Hand.

So there you go - Thanks for the question.
