Apple Fall event 2016 confirmed for Sept 7th
Apple Fall event 2016 confirmed for Sept 7th

Checking with inside sources - code names - PC, FC and TC - I  was able to confirm that Apples fall event to announce the next Gen iPhones will be Wednesday Sept 7th at 10:00 AM PT.  Two new versions of the iPhone (4.7" and 5.5") will be announced along with other updated products.  The new iPhones will be available for pre-order at 12:01 AM PT on Saturday the 10th.  And iPhones will start being delivered (put in customers hands) on Friday the 16th.

    Sep 7th - Fall event

    Sep 10th - Pre-orders

Sep 16th - Next Gen iPhones in customers Hands.

The Sept 7th date makes a lot of sense - as it is also the first day of CTIA Super Mobility 2016.  This goes along with past Apple events timed perfectly to take the wind from the rest of the industries sails.  Much more info on this on Ep 400 of Today in iOS - going live later today.

    26Apple-Reports-Third-Quarter-Results.html

For the Conference  Call - nothing shocking was expected and nothing shocking was revealed.

Tim Cook did start off the call saying revenue was on the high side of the guidance range - but in the guidance range.

What was revealed - was not at all shocking - and basically in line with what was expected.

iPhone sales for Calendar Q2 2016 were - 40.4 Mil vs 47.5 mil a year ago — or a 15% decline.  If you remember last episode - we said the Average guess by anal-ists was 40 Mil - for a 15.6% decline - so just slightly better than the average guess.

Closest to the pin for iPhone sales was Jim Suva of Citi - with a guess of 40.3 Mil units sold.  Way to Go Jim.

As I said last week - maybe it is best to compare last quarter with the two year ago quarter as the iPhone seems to be on a two year upgrade cycle - and if you did that - then it was a solid increase of 24.3% when compared to 2 years ago quarter.  Apple did say they expect better numbers next quarter and the iPhone SE was doing much better than expected.  And they said iPhones sales to Switchers was the highest % ever.

iPad sales for last quarter were 10 Mil units. vs 10.9 Mil the year ago quarter.  But the Anal-ists were guessing with an average of 8.9 Mil units sold - that is a good solid beat of the Anal-ists expectations.  Closest to the pin was Lee Storch of the Braeburn group - with a guess of 10 Mil units - and he was not just dead on - he was also the highest guess.  Outside of Lee - everyone else was expecting lower and in most cases much lower iPad units sold.  Especially Greg Boyd - who pessimistically guessed there would be just 7.5 Mil units sold.

Overall - Revenue dropped 15% year over year.  Again most of that is due to iPhone drops year over year.

Turning to Cash - Apple has a boat load of it — no make that an armada load of it and it seems all that crazy money Apple throws at their spaceship campus actually affected that cash standing or maybe it was the 1 Billion they invested in Didi - as the cash on hand decreased slightly - that said their mountain of cash is now a staggering - $231.5 Billion dollars. Maybe better to say it is their mountain range of cash.

Apple last quarter had 10.6 Billion cash flow generated from sales. And they did return 13 Billion to investors via dividends and stock buybacks.  So yeah there was that too that caused a slight 1.4 Billion decrease last quarter.   FYI - 93% of the $231.5 Billion is outside the US.

ASP’s last quarter were $595 - which is very low for iPhone ASP’s the last 6 quarters it has been between $650 and $700 - but way way above smartphones not called the iPhone ASP’s - then you are looking at ASP’s less than $250. Yes iPhones ASP’s are way over double the rest of the industry even in a down quarter.

Again - numbers were lower all around vs the year ago quarter.  Same as last quarter and likely the same for next quarter.  But Tim seemed very optimistic about the future - and you know what - so did Wallstreet - because the stock jumped up a bunch on Wednesday and finished the week up.  So go figure - the times you think Apple will go up after a call - it goes down - and this time when it looked like it would go down - it went up.

Actually it was the best day for Apple’s stock in 2 years.  So yeah it really did well or as others pointed out - Apple has been beaten down so much lately - it really was just a matter of not being able to keep a fundamentally incredible company down for ever.

I should point out I own Apple stock - and it makes up the majority of my investment portfolio - with quotes around portfolio.  I am clearly long on Apple for full and fair disclosure. But it is funny I always know when to by Apple stock - because there is one listener that emails me when Apple stock is getting beat up - and the more emails - the better the opportunity to buy.  That was recently - and now - if you believe what some articles are saying - Apple should be at least 30% higher than where it is today.  We shall see.  What I can say is Apple is a cash machine still - and with the iPhone SE - it now has a product to get them intro’d in the Mid-Tier of Smartphones - while having the high end all but locked up.  On the Call Tim Cook said multiple times they were surprised by the demand for the SE - but if Tim had listened to this show - he would not have been - there are a lot of people that love the 4 inchers.  And if nothing else - Tuesday’s conference call at a min assured those 4 incher lovers like my wife - that there will be future updates of the form factor.

There was one thing I thought Tim Cook would announce in the conference call - that I did not hear - and was surprised was that Apple had sold their 1 Billionth iPhone. I thought for sure Tim would tout that fact.  But he did not on the call and that worried me on how the iPhone was doing - because the math surely indicated they would be there.  But alas - my fears were put to rest the next day when Tim announced during an Apple employee meeting that Had indeed sold their 1 billionth iphone the week before.  So just a little over 9 years to get to 1 Billion iPhones sold.

    Tim said quote

"We never set out to make the most, but we've always set out to make the best products that make a difference,"

Per iOS devices - if you add in the 330 Million iPads and at least another 100 Million iPod Touches - we are getting close to the 1.5 Billion Mark for iOS devices.  Maybe when Tim gets on Stage in September He will mention the 1.5 Billion Mark for iOS devices. Which is a number Apple will hit either this quarter or next.

I was planning on updating from iOS 9.3.2 to 9.3.3 on my iPhone 6S this weekend, but some research has indicated a plethora of problems, including increased battery drain & WiFi connection trouble.

How has it gone for you guys & gals? Has anyone here, after following Rob's updating procedures, regretted installing the new operating system? Should I just wait until the iOS 10 Gold Master?

Greg Beltz and Ken Ostrander both replied about the issue in iOS 9.3.2 and earlier where a malicious gif or video could take over your device. So there definitely is a security reason to upgrade to 9.3.3

And Danielle Saul and Chris Searly both replied about seeing better battery life with 9.3.3 - and who does not like better battery life - well other than the folks at Mophie that is.

    Hi Rob,

Thanks for the show. I always learn something new.

Usually my wife buys my razor blades. On a recent vacation I bought a 4 pack of replacement blades for the razor I've been using for years. I thought  package had been mis priced. The cost of razors are crazy.  I have heard you talk about Harrys before and I decided it was time to check out their web site.  I just went to Harrys.com and placed an order. I bought the Truman set and applied the TII coupon code. Ten bucks! Wow. I almost feel like I stole something. The price alone is worth looking into. I'm looking forward to my Truman set arriving. Thanks for the tip.

And then here was Richard’s email after getting the Harrys product.

    Hi Rob

I am so impressed with these guys I am highly recommending their razors and shave gel.  I have not had such a good shave before. I received the starter kit from Harrys for $10 after my "TII" $5 dollar off coupon code. I thought shaving was about the same regardless of the brand. I was wrong. I'm not sure what is in the shave gel but my skin feels amazing and the razors are like no others I have used before. It is one pass on the face not two or three as before. I kept feeling my face after my first couple of shaves, it is that different. The cost is at least half of cost of the big three replacement blades.  I like sharing with folks when I get great service or a superior product. This is one of them.

    Regards Rich Ermi

    Fairbanks Alaska

Richard - thanks for the great emails and feedback.

Folks - I have said it before and I will say it again - I am a harrys customer - and I love my harrys razors they are by far the best razors I have ever used - yes the price is low - but the quality is very high - this is not a shave that feels like it cost a buck - this is a great shave - from a 5 blade german blade.  And as Rich said - go to harrys dot com and use promo code Tii to save $5 off your first order.  again go to harrys dot com and use promo code tii - to save $5 off the best razor blades and shaving cream - and after shave lotion.  with the later two being made from natural materials - no chemicals - you will feel good and smell good and have money left over to buy something good.  Thanks Harrys for sponsoring this show.

Earlier this year we talked about apple getting into creating original content.  And then mentioned that it looked like Will.i.am and Ben Silverman would be producing that project.

And recently Apple confirmed it and the new show will be called Planet of the Apps.  Cute.

Quote - A groundbreaking new series about apps and their creators unquote

This is currently an open casting call - where they are looking for app devs that can have their app - iOS, macOS, tvOS or WatchOS app in beta or a functional state by October 21st - and if you think that is something you can do - then you have until Friday August 26th to submit to be on the show.

Sounds like filming will be in LA in Late 2016 / early 2017 - so you will need to be free to travel to LA for filming.

I have a link in the show notes with more info and how to apply.

If you apply let me know.  So far I have talked to one person that has submitted.

They are having some meet and greets as well.  August 1st there is one in New York city.  August 4th will be in Austin TX.

If this sounds like American Idol for App devs - yes - yes it is.

Good luck to all that apply and hopefully we will have a few Tii listeners that make the cut.

    companies/apple-watch-smartwatch-sales-

    report/index.html

A report from IDC - indicates that Apple Watch sales have quote plummeted. unquote - well actually what they said to put it in context is quote The Apple watch debuted to a backlog of orders and 3.6 million units were shipped in its first three months on the market. But sales plummeted to just 1.6 million in the latest quarter unquote

So lets understand what IDC is saying - that in Q2 2016 the amount of Apple Watches sold - were lower than those sold in Q2 2015 - the quarter when you know the Apple watch was launched.  SHOCKER.  Or I mean wow - guys - great insight.

quote "Consumers have held off on smartwatch purchases since early 2016 in anticipation of a hardware refresh,” said IDC - YOU THINK.

If you look at the Apple Conference Call details - you will see the segment - Other Products - which is where the Apple Watch, Apple TV, iPod and accessories are grouped together.  Well other Products dropped 16% year over year.  And most if not all of that drop was because of the Apple Watch.

    21:39

    http://technosamigos.com/apple-

    watch-s-details/

And speaking of Apple Watch - rumors are the Apple Watch 2 will be introduced this fall - because well the same ones that said it would be released in the Spring and then WWDC need to say something - right.

Oh wait - they start the rumor out with quote First planned for March 21 release - the Apple Watch 2 has been pushed back to maybe a fall 2016 event or even later unquote - oh way to really commit guys.

Let me start by saying this - 2nd Generation Apple watch is coming - 100% guaranteed.  And when is it coming - in the future - which I also 100% guarantee.  Or should I say - as told to me by unnamed sources in a position to know.

Per the rumors - they basically look like a rehash of the spring rumors - you know 40% thinner - But hey wait - that rumor on thinness is also attributed back to Digitimes.  So we can nix that rumor - The 2nd Gen Apple Watch - will NOT be 40% thinner - and likely will be within 10% of the current thickness.

There is that whole - getting through the day on a single charge thing to worry about.

Also per the rumors - is that Apple will partially make it thinner by going with a thinner display - that I do believe - and hence my 10% thinner prediction.  I think Apple will make it thinner where it can with out changing the battery size much if at all.

They also say it will not actually be the Apple watch 2 - per the name - but the Apple Watch S - that per Ming-Chi Kuo.

Again one thing we do know after talking to sources in the supply chain is that a 2nd generation Apple watch is coming in the future.

    apple-rumored-to-launch-iphone-7-

    on-week-of-sept-12

You know what also happens this time of year - People start looking at calendars from the last couple of years - look at when Apple announced the last few versions of the iPhone and then calculate when it will be this year - and then announce that they heard from sources that Apple will be introducing the next iPhone on X date.  And yup - we are there again.

Evan Blass was the first to pull out the calendar and guess on the announce date - ummm I mean talk to inside sources about this.  Oh who am I kidding - you know he is just guessing.

And he is guessing that the next gen iPhones will be in delivered to customers Friday Sept 16th.

Hey we can play this game too.  First lets look back the past few years.

2015 - Apple announced iPhone 6S and 6S+ and other products at the Wednesday Sept 9th event - with pre-orders starting on Sat Sept 12th and Delivery of devices starting on Friday Sept 25th 2015.  Fiscal year ended on the 26th. with 2 days of new iPhones sales.

In 2014 - Apple announced the iPhone 6 and 6+ at the Tuesday Sept 9th event.  With pre-orders on Friday Sept 12th and delivery on Friday Sept 19th. Fiscal year ended on the 27th - with 8 days of new iPhone sales.

In 2013 - Apple announced the iPhone 5S and 5C at the Tuesday Sept 10th event.  With pre-orders for the 5C starting on Friday Sep 13th and Delivery starting on Friday the 20th for both the 5C and 5S.  No pre-orders that year for 5s. Fiscal year ended on the 28th with 8 days of new iPhone sales.

Now lets look at some numbers - Last quarter they were 15% below the year ago quarter for revenue.  The quarter before they were 13% lower.

If we went with a range of 13 to 15% lower than the year ago for this quarter - that would mean revenue in the range of 43.8 to 44.5 Billion dollars.  That assuming we go with a launch date of Sept 24th to give two days of iPhone next gen revenue like last your.  HOWEVER - Apple is projecting 45.5 Billion to 47.5 Billion in Revenue.

I believe the only way they would predict that level of revenue is if they were planning on a week plus of next gen iPhone sales - like in 2014 and 2013.

So backing into 8 days of iPhone sales - means - next Gen iPhone would go on sale - and in customers hands on Friday September 16th - with Pre-Orders going live on Saturday Sept 10th - and with the Apple event Wednesday Sept 7th.  And hey guess what - Sept 7th - just purely coincidentally is the first day of CTIA Super Mobility 2016 conference in Las Vegas.  Not that apple has ever done a media event at the beginning of a mobile conference before.

So Yes - Talking to my inside sources - Apple will have their Fall event at 10:00 AM PT on Wednesday September 7th, Pre-orders to start at 12:01 AM PT on Saturday the 10th - and next gen iPhones will be available to customers on Friday Sept 16th.  Thanks to all my inside sources - who I will just call for now Past Calendar, future Calendar, and Tim Cook. Or as I put in my Post earlier today on Tii - Sources - PC, FC and TC.  Just Sayin.

FYI - Evan bass came back and said pre-orders on Sept 9th.  No mention from him on Event date.  Will be interesting to see who had better sources - Evan or Tii.

Per rumors on the iPhone 7 - A new one comes from Macotakara - and that is the home button on the next gen iPhones will sit flush with the screen and not move when pressed.

But rather there will be some hepatic feedback when pressed - and will make it seem like it was pressed.

Of course that means they will also add 3D touch to the home button as well.

And the rumors go on that Apple will introduce a Space Black Model bringing to 5 the colors available. Gold, Rose Gold, Space Grey, Silver and now Space Black.

One more latest rumor about the iPhone 7 - is well that it will not be called the iPhone 7 after all - but rather - iPhone 6SE  and then the iPhone 6SE +

This from the German blog - Apfelpage - and they claim Chinese supply chain sources which have seen final retail packaging have given them this info.

It is possible - but then the line up would be - iPhone SE, iPhone 6SE and iPhone 6SE+

    ugggghhh - what a mess.

This is exactly what I have been waiting for from Apple or a 3rd party app. Simple but effective

The edits we make to each other's list don't have a lag from one device to the other (both using 6s Plus).

    Hi Rob,

I am running the latest iOS 10 beta. A few bugs with freezing. One new feature I found in my yahoo mail, when I want to move an e- mail to a folder, the folder name automatically comes up & I don't have have to scroll down to find it!

A tid bit of info, did you know over half of the iPad screens are made by Samsung?

    Great work,

Hi Rob, Here’s a story idea I thought you might like on the "most customizable and first truly wireless earbuds” that launched on Kickstarter. ELWN FIT earbuds solve the two biggest problems that smartphone users face when using Bluetooth earbuds – fit and battery life. They come with the infinity wearable charger – so users can wear them non-stop and charge while still in use. Every pair also comes with an industry leading 48 fitting accessories for an endless supply of ear size combinations to ensure a perfectly secure fit for everyone. Please let me know if this is interest and I can put you in touch w/ the founders and send along high-res images. Here’s their launch press release with more details. Thanks, Scott

And Scott is with the PR company which represents this kickstarter project.

This project had a goal of $50k - and has raised $180k so far and you have until August 11th at 10:53 AM CT to fund it.

So if the Fireflies were not for you and you need that built in microphone then maybe the E L W N earbuds are - search for  E L W N in kickstarter.  Yes - Confirmed - the ELWN DOES have a built in mic for hands free calling.

Pricing on this is $119 and that comes with the infinity band and 48 fit accessories.

Delivery is expected in October 2016.

Thanks to Dr. John for the heads up on this next one.

And this is a kickstarter project for Apple Watch.  And it has to do with the charging disc - if you have one you know it is a pain when you want to take it with you - you have to pull the cord out from where ever you stashed it - as the cord does not come out of the charging disc.  Wouldn’t it be nice if the disc itself could be removed from the charging cord. Which obviously leads us to this Kickstarter project - called - Diskus - spelled - D I S K U S .  And this is as we set up - a charging disc only - where you can plug a cord into and out of it - making easy to remove from where you have it and take with you.

This one has a goal of $55,000 and has raised 48k so far - so almost there.  And you have until August 29th at 1:00 PM CT to fund this one.  So yeah it will hit its goal no problem.

Early birds on this are $30 and they will be shipping in October.

It does have the Apple MFI certification as well.

This one is pretty cool - and if you have an apple watch and have not purchased a second charging disc - then this is for you.

    Search for D I S K U S at kickstarter dot com.

Thanks to Chris in London for this next one.

This is one I reached out to the makers of to see if I could get samples - no reply yet.

It is called the NOBEL BTS - and it is a blue tooth device you plug your wired headphones into - and then it connects to your iPhone.  No need for headphone jack - or maybe you are just tired of breaking your wired headphones plugs when in your front left pocket of your skinny jeans and you sit down.

Again - I reached out to them to see about getting a unit to test - this has a price of $99 - so definitely not cheap.  If anyone else has tested this device - please call in a review to 206-666-6364 - that is 206-moon dog.

    Dear Rob,

I have run into an aggravating occurrence in the way that my iPhone 6s handles notifications and I am wondering if there is a way around this. I hope you or someone in the Today in iOS community knows a solution.

What I am experiencing is when I get a notification and then tap it, it goes away. There is a couple apps that sends push information to the notification that is important, but is available no where else in the app. So, if I missed exactly what the notification said, I cannot go back and look at it. Is there a way to go back and see the full list of past notifications? I can't believe that they are just wiped from the log once they have been viewed.

    http://9to5mac.com/2016/07/30/pangu-

    jailbreak-potential-hack/

iOS 9.3.3 jailbreak is now available. That said - there are reports that the jailbreak may be broken.

There are some reports that jailbreakers that used the new Pangu Tool report unauthorized access to credit and debit and pay pal and social security account - according to a report from 9 to 5 mac.

Pangu has replied saying via twitter:

    quote

Neither we nor 25pp would be so stupid to make money by hacking users paypal account via jailbreak tool. We hope to find out the truth asap.

    unquote

and then on Reddit said the following

    quote

Hello everyone, this is the 4th jailbreak tool released by our team which means we should have some reputation even though we come from China(And we know most western users don’t trust Chinese software normally). So if any user thinks we are hacking your accounts that makes us feel sad deeply. Also we have not received any report of account breach from Chinese users. So may I ask those who have account breach issues, which version did u use, the CN or EN version? And we noticed that my space and tumblr account data are leaked this year, have u checked that if u are using same account? We want to find the root cause of this asap.

We spent so much time to read the posts here and some users also have account breach issue by using the EN version? We of course talked with 25pp and they totally have no clue about this. We are also checking if their PC tool has some security flaws which may enable hackers to attack from network sniff. But as far as now, we don’t find anything suspicious.

    unquote

So what do we know - well that some people that jailbroke with the latest tools have had some of their accounts compromised - and that alone should give everyone pause when thinking of jailbreaking iOS 9.3.3

If you are already jailbroken on an older version - stay there.

If you were getting ready to jailbreak iOS 9.3.3 - stop - hold off until this mess is sorted out.

And if you just did the 9.3.3 jailbreak - you have two options - 1. Run around like the annoying kid from home alone screaming with your arms in the air.  Or 2. Just uninstall the jailbreak and bring your phone back to factory settings

And once you do that - maybe look at going to the public beta of iOS 10.

More on this in future episodes — but for now - something is not right - and I just can not recommend the 9.3.3 jailbreak from Pangu - I personally don’t think it was them that introduced the issue - but someone did - and it needs to be vetted fully.

    Hi, Rob,

Add me to the list of iPhone users who have had music disappear from their phones. I'm not an Apple Music customer or an iCloud user. All the music I listen to is resident on my iPhone and synced with my laptop. I'm running IOS 9.3.2 on an un-jail-broken iPhone 6s.

My grandson and I listened to music on the way home from a trip. I charged the phone that night and checked mail the next day. When we got back in the car that morning, there was no music and, obviously, no playlists.

Apple sent me an entirely unhelpful 'solution' involving re-downloading all purchased music but telling me to sync the phone if there were songs which  I hadn't downloaded from them. I thought, given the very plain circumstances of this failure, they would be more interested. Maybe they already have enough pertinent information.

Fortunately I had a recent back-up and the music (and playlists) were easily recovered. It would be nice to know they had fixed this problem--or had at least acknowledged it.

    Regards,

    Larry

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote

“It looks like the iPhone 4 might be their Vista, and I’m okay with that”

    Kevin Turner, Chief Operating Officer,

    Microsoft, 14 July 2010

Well MS did sell over 200 Million copies of Vista - so really that is not too bad. The iPhone 4 actually sold a less than that all time.  But the ASP’s are much higher - so over all the Revenue for Apple was much greater - but if we are talking just unit sales - Then Mr Turner was a little too optimistic - but we like his spirit.

    functions-/a/d-id/1326314

iOS 10 beta 3 was released on Monday - actually Apple released the updated betas for pretty much everything on Monday.

But lets talk about iOS 10 beta 3 - As there are some new features.

    1. First is touch ID - previously in Beta 1 and 2 you needed to press the home screen button to activate touch ID - but now just resting your finger on it is good enough - assuming you have rest finger to open turned on under accessibility

    2. The Lock Screen sounds have changed a little - and there is haptic feedback when the device locks.

    3. Keyboard sounds that were removed in beta 2 - were brought back from the dead in beta 3.

    4. Users can add downloads from Safari, Photos and Mail to iCloud drive.

    5. For the Home App - there is now a section in Settings App - that shows your hubs - which lets you disconnect from one and join another on the go.

    6. In messages app - photos are no longer auto cropped to a square in the image picker - let you see the entire photo before picking it.

    7. In the Apple Music App - Playlists now show as quote subscribed to unquote instead of quote Added to your library unquote.  Same functionality - just semantics is more accurate.

    8. In the Lock screen - on the Widgets view - the clock now moves up to the status bar when you scroll down and push the clock off the screen.

    9.  In the settings app - there is a new siri support section to show which apps use siri and may access your data. Of course right now that list if empty - but Apple will eventually be allowing Apps to access Siri with iOS 10. So they are ready to go there.

    10. All app icons now support 3D touch whether or not the developer enabled the quick actions feature.  A 3D touch on any icon will allow you to share a link to the app with your peeps.

Of course there are bug squashing and system optimization changes in beta 3.  So if you had issues with with Music, Notes, Phone apps or Siri - some of them issues have been put to pasture.

And speaking of bugs - AR Mode for Pokemon Go is fixed.  Now I will say this - I am not ignoring Pokemon Go - I just am not going out of my way to report on it.  If you are a pokemon go addict - and want to send in feedback about the app or tips or tricks - feel free to do so - just record those words so you know I don’t actually have to read them myself - just sayin.  call into to 1-206-666-6364 - that is 206 - moon - dog

    lightning-socket-water-warning/

Thanks to Chris in London for the heads up on this next one.

It is one more thing found in iOS 10 beta 3 - and that is the iOS device now warns you if it detects liquid in the lightening socket.

Of course you are thinking you know what is even better about warning when water is detected - is to not have it even matter - and that is one of the biggest rumors around the iPhone 7 and 7+ - that they will be more water resistant than past iPhones.  And well that and there will be no headphone jack to allow water in the device.

But this week was not just about new betas for next gen OS’s - it was also about Gold Master releases too - and iOS 9.3.3 was finally released.  This is the double dot update with 5 different beta’s - so yeah it was about time.

So what is new that we did not already cover when talking about one of the many past beta’s - well - it seems performance is the big thing - with many reporting their iOS device running faster and smoother and betterer since updating to 9.3.3

It also bring at least 26 security patches - we say at least 26 because that are all the ones Apple lists - but there could be more.

Is 9.3.3 perfect - nope - there are a few scattered reports of issues - but there seems to be less reports of issues this time - either because 5 betas actually squashed most of the bugs - or that those that update first and complain the loudest - already moved on to iOS 10 betas - and 9.3.3 is a distant memory for them.

The small number of complaints I saw came around wifi connection issues - that are still there, iPhones that keep restarting and some battery drain issues.  But again a very small number of reports of issues.

If you are running 9.3.2 - then it is time to go ahead and update to 9.3.3 - but as always - first back up - and then force quit all apps - then reset network settings - then upgrade.

There are some videos out there already showing iPhones with 9.3.2 vs 9.3.3 for performance tests and what they found was - the boot up was a little very little faster on 9.3.2 - but launching apps - they were about the same.  the only place 9.3.3 seemed to beat 9.3.2 was when going back to the home screen.   So those 5 betas - yeah - code optimization does not seem to be the big focus or any focus.

Again as with any double dot update - it is all about squashing them bugs man - and well performance improvements.  And really in this case that is 100% true - as I did not see any reports of even a single new feature. just bugs squashing and code optimization.

    apple-releases-watchos-2-2-2-for-apple-watch/

But iOS 9.3.3 and tv OS 9.2.2 were not the only double dot updates this week there was also watch OS 2.2.2.

And shocker - this double dot update seems to be all about - you guessed it - squashing bugs and optimizing code.

To download the update - go to the Apple watch app on your iPhone - then in the App to General and software update - and tap on install - type in your passcode - accept the terms - and if your Apple watch has over a 50% charge and is on the charging disk - it will start the update process.

Probably a good idea to update your apple watch - as performance enhancements - tend to improve battery life - in general - that is.

Rob, just noticed a sponsored app in the App Store for the first time. Ugh. Knew it was coming but still, it's sad to see. Here's a screenshot from my iPad Pro 9.7”:

    Hi Rob,

    Love the show.

I am an early adopter of CarPlay via the Pioneer AVH-4000NEX DVD player. I ordered the unit the day it was announced. Unfortunately, I had to wait another half year for Apple to turn that feature on. Frankly, I'd given up hope it would ever be turned on. Pioneer's own AppRadio interface is designed by lawyers because anytime you switch between "apps" you have to read and approve a disclaimer. The Pioneer software is like crap. So I mostly used the unit for its satellite radio, HD radio and Bluetooth music. It does a nice job with its own native phone app. A microphone is mounted to your visor. When CarPlay was finally released for 3rd party radios, the kind you can retrofit into your own car, the Pioneer finally became useful.

With each update of iOS CarPlay became more and more useable. The first version was an exciting release because finally, I could use that dreamy interface and apps mostly worked. The home button worked like the iPhone home button except there was no feedback that you'd pressed the button. That all changed with the next release of iOS. Pressing the home button produced a halo-like white ring around it. You knew you pressed it!

The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX connects to the iPhone via Bluetooth, HDMI, 30 pin, USB, and the Lightning port. The head unit is detachable. It plays DVDs, CDs, and memory cards. One person connects an Apple TV, via the HDMI port, and an iPhone hotspot. It has a 7" screen. It plays XM/Sirius radio with a $50 adapter, HD Radio, and Pandora. Pioneer called it their audio flagship. It doesn't have navigation built-in but CarPlay steps in and does a beautiful job of that. Pioneer did a solid job with its hardware and CarPlay makes it safe and useable.  iOS 9 gives CarPlay a wonderful memory for resuming podcasts, audio books, and music from where they left off when the car engine is shut down. iOS 8 gave CarPlay wireless connection to car receivers that support that function. The AVH-4100NEX includes Android Auto. The AVH-4200NEX includes wireless connections. That's a feature I wish I had as my lightning plug cable has been replaced twice. It frays with all the attaching/detaching that goes on. Yes, I would buy the Pioneer again. I paid $699 at Crutchfields because they included installation instructions for my KIA Optima and had the proper installation tools and harnesses. In the end though, Best Buy did the installation for $110.00.

    VOICEMAIL - RING - Scott_DC_question_RING_Apple_TV_APP

Since the last time I talked about Ring on the show - I was in Chicago and DC and It really is nice to see who is at your door and even hear them - and then decide if you want to say anything or just watch and make sure they leave.  This as the Dad of the house makes you feel better about your family when you are out traveling for work - or in the case in Chicago when my wife was with me - and the kids were home with Grandma - feel even better knowing I knew exactly who was at the door at 9:00 PM at night.

But it is not just at night it makes you feel better - The folks from RING point out that there is a home burglary ever 13 seconds and most happen in the broad daylight - where a burglar first rings your doorbell to see if you are home.  By allowing you to speak to someone you are not sure who they are - it will scare off those with bad thoughts and intentions.

If you go to Ring dot com slash T i i - you will get for a limited Time $50 off the Ring of Security kit - which includes a video doorbell, Stick up Cam, solar Panel and indoor chime.

For the Video Door bell it quickly - and easily connects to your wired door bell wires.  The main unit is not something you have to worry about charging if you wire it up.  It took me all of twenty minutes if that to remove the old door bell and replace it with the Video Doorbell from Ring.

And you can also share access to it with others in your house. My Wife and son also get access to the door bell and video.

If I can’t answer or even if I do - they can answer as well.

The RING doorbell has quickly become one of those accessories you can’t see yourself living with out ever again.

Beyond the front door - The Stick up Cam can be used to watch other parts of your house and also installs in minutes.

Go to ring dot com slash t i i - to save $50 off either Ring Security Kits.

Each quarter the anal-ists come out and predict Apple will sell this many of this widget - and that many of that do-hickey - and this is a quarter and so they are doing it again.  And thankfully the wonderful Philip Elmer-Dewit - now at PED30.com - his own site - aggregates all those guesses - ummm - I mean deep analytics and shares it with the world.

This time the guesses range from a low of 38 million iphone sold last quarter to a high of 43 million sold - to put that in perspective - in the year ago quarter - Apple sold - 47.5 mil - and the year before that 32.5 Mil.

With an average guess of 40 Mil - that is a decline year over year of 15.6% if you are a glass half empty kind of person.  But if you are glass half full person - then it is an increase of 23% from two years ago for that quarter.

Given that iPhones and smartphones in general are on a 2 year refresh cycle - maybe looking 2 years ago for the same quarter is a better way to look at things. Just sayin.

    apple-pay-now-available-in-france/

Apple Pay expanded a little this past week - France now has access to the easy and secure payment system from Apple.

MasterCard and Visa Cards issues from Banque Popular, Ticket Restaurant, Carrefour Banque, and Caisse d’epargne can now be added to Apple Pay in France.

Both Boon and Orange were a little late getting on the train - but are reported to be on that next train to clarksville.

Per where Apple Pay is accepted by the merchants - that includes - and excuse me while I totally mutilate these names -  Bocage, Le Bon Marche, Cojean, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Fnac, Jean Luc, Sephora, Flunch, Parkeon, Pret and more.

France now joins - the United States, the UK, China, Australia, Canada, Switzerland, Singapore with Apple Pay support - with Hong Kong and Spain come some time later in 2016.

And guess what - it is later in 2016 - so that means Hong Kong has been added.  Hey - Apple is not messing around here.

In Hong Kong - Apple pay works with American Express, Visa and MasterCard cards from Banks - HSBC, Bank of China, Hang Seng, DBS, Ferengi Central Reserve and Standard Chartered.

The Bank of East Asia and HKT will be on the next train to clarksville.

Per merchants in Hong Kong that are accepting Apple Pay - that would be more than 3 dozen at launch - including 7-11, Mannings, Wellcome, Jasons Food & Living, Sa Sa and Pizza Hut.

    2016/07/20/iphone-vs-android-

    application-revenue/

App Annie put out a little report that showed how revenue per app looks on iOS vs Android - and the general conclusion is it looks twice as good on iOS than it does on Android.

So Apps on iOS generate 2X the revenue - even though Android apps get 2x the downloads.  So on a per download basis - iOS apps really generate 4X the revenue.

And then if you realize there are a lot less devices on iOS variation wise - there is less time in testing and QA on the iOS side - so that increased your ROI even more.

And guess what the revenue gap is growing not shrinking.

Because of all of this - when App devs decide they are only developing for one of the two platforms - it is of little surprise it is iOS they choose most often to be the only platform for their app.

Thanks to all that sent in this next one that goes into the rumor - big rumor section - and it is that Apple may be looking to buy Formula One.  Now in the US we look at this rumor and either yawn or scratch our head.  But outside the US - Formula 1 is really really popular - and if Apple is looking for great content - F1 racing brings that on a global scale - and of course Great content on the Apple TV apple owns - would be key - others look at this rumor and say - gee what else could apple be building that is automotive related - like maybe an electric car?? Apple is probably pumping more money into Project titan than they would F1 to buy it outright.

Is this true - who knows - but it sure does make for fun speculation - and if other rumors about Apples next big thing are true - then it does make a bunch of sense.

Remember all those Sapphire furnaces that were for sale - I have a theory on who purchased them at the fire sale pricing - Corning - but not to use them - just to keep others from disrupting their Gorilla Glass empire - and an empire that if rumors are correct may be getting quite a bit stronger.

The iphone 7 is rumored to be launched with Gorillas Glass 5 - which is newer and tougher and stronger - and betterer all around.  Supposedly a phone with GG5 - dropped from 1.6 meters has an 80% survival probability.  Vs - well that was not given - but it is assume to be much worse than 80%.

The best I could find is that previously with GG4 it was dropped at 1 meter.

Obviously any improvement is an improvement - but how it would compare to say a sapphire screen originally dreamed up by GTAT - before their technical shortcomings doomed that company - we shall never know - because I really do think Corning purchased up all those sapphire furnaces - and they now are in a warehouse in upstate NY collecting dust.

    Hi Rob,

I know you don’t discuss beta problems much but many people are experiencing audio playback pausing when listening to audio playback.

It seems that Siri is too sensitive and listening for "Hey Siri" command too well!

When people speaking in podcasts use SSS sounds (S syllabus) the playback pauses and Siri waits for commands.

Turning of toggle for “Hey Siri” fixes this for now.

Go to Settings/Siri/ and find this toggle.

    Hey Rob,

Just wanted to give you my thoughts on a couple of things.  I wanted to start off by talking about Dev beta 2, however over the past week, I have gotten my iPad Pro 9.7 128gig wifi only model - Silver.

I purchased a brand new iPad Pro on Thursday,  July 7th.  The verdict?  I love it.  My son loves his iPad 2, 3, iPad Air 1 and Air 2 as well as my iPad 4th gen, so we got a pretty good idea as to how the vast majority of iPad generations preform.

The iPad Air 2 was s big step up from the 1st Air so we didn't expect another big jump to the iPad Pro 9.7, however we were pleasantly surprised by how "Beefy" this edition was. It doesn't know the meaning of Lag and  doesn't get all that hot.  The Colour is beautiful and does a great job at reproducing skin tones.  In fact, both cameras blew me away.  They take amazing night and low light pictures bursting with Colour and fine details.

The Colour reproduction was so accurate that you could easily distinguish between different temperatures of white light.  I found that it takes fantastic pics in florescent lighting without ending up making the pics look all greenish or purplish.

For me, the camera is important and I am happy to say that the iPad.Pro 9.7 delivered a better than expected result.

    iOS 10.0 Developer Bets 2

I installed this edition on the new iPad Pro 9.7 and it worked great for except for one issue but it was a big one for me.  That was audio and video playback would just stop for no reason.  Especially when I would be checking out your podcast.  I couldn't stand for that so I downgraded to 9.3.2?  Provlem solved!

    iOS 10.0 Developer Beta 3

Dev Beta 3 improved on iOS Dev Beta 2 by delivering an even smoother performance.  Compared to the length of time between Dev 1 and 2 betas, Dev 3 Beta came out only a week after 2 did.

Anyway, that's it from me.  I may try Dev Beta 3 on the new iPad.

And finally, what is the deal with no flashlight shortcut on the iPad Pro 9.7?

    Have a great day!

    Hi Rob.

I wanted to share a unique experience I just had with an iPad 2nd gen running iOS 9.3. A coworker gave it to me a few months ago asking me to help him with it. His (now deceased) neighbor gave him a 2nd gen iPad before he died. He never logged off, causing the Activation Lock to kick in. I spoke with Apple a couple times asking for help, explaining the previous owner is now deceased. I wasn't expecting them to help because of obvious security reasons, but I wanted to show my coworker it wasn't possible to bypass the Activation Lock. He then gave it to me saying he no longer had a use for it, and if I ever got it to work, I could keep it. I shut it off and left it in my closet for a few months. I was cleaning out my closet today and came across the iPad. I thought, "What the heck.. I'll turn it on."  Much to my surprise, the Activation Lock was gone! Is there something with the A5 chip that flushes all memory after being powered off for so long? I was quite baffled.

    Thanks, love the show!

    Dear Rob,

Don’t know where to start but El Capitan 10.11.6 and iOS 9.3.2 and 9.3.3 are hitting me left and right with so many bugs I need to call an exterminator, ASAP. Most of this has to do with garden variety syncing of iPhones and iPads today.

    1. Three times today, while syncing an iDevice, my iMac shut down and rebooted with its famous chord, returning to the screen I was working on, not the usual login window.

    2. None of my iDevices can make a successful App Store update. I’ll hit the update button, it will turn into the round spinning icon, then after a few moments return to the update button again.

    3. Even though I have the updated apps in my iTunes app section, when I sync the iDevices, the apps are not updated.

    4. All syncing activity on iTunes seems to hang up around the Photos stage. Many times today, I had to unplug and reboot the iDevices, shut down iTunes, and try to sync again.

Very unusual behavior. And because it is across multiple devices, and because the problems happen when the iDevices are plugged into the computer, on LTE, and on WiFi, the problem has to be with Apple’s servers. Even so, my iMac and every iDevice are acting uncharacteristically weird.

Days like this I wish Steve Jobs were still around to kick some butts.

    Hi Rob,

When it comes to App updates and fixing bugs - Look at the long cute explanation from Amazon's "explanation". It still doesn't say what was actually fixed.  Uber & left are doing the same thing.   Why do devs assume customers don't wanna know the science and technicals?!   So vague:

    Regards,

    Michael.

Hi Michael - I think it has to looking towards the future and not dwelling on the past - why bring up those specific old bugs - just know that bugs were squashed - or at least I am guessing is their thought process - it could also be embarrassment about what those bugs were.

Per the Amazon explanation they had this part:

quote each bug fixed makes for a better app on your phone and better apps mean happier people and happier people equals a better world.  So I guess you could say that while you’re going about your day today - we have developers working hard to make the world a better place - one bug at a time unquote

I mean I guess that is the half full way to look at it or you can spin it a different way such as quote  our developers are helping clean up the mess they created in this world that caused lots of sadness - one bug at a time. unquote Because - well each bug causes sadness and their devs were responsible for each bug - right?

If you want to learn to code - absolutely.

And today 10.0 beta 3 came out - so it is one more step closer to the Gold master.

    Dear Rob,

I am a voiceover user and was recently trying to move apps to folders on my small i-pad pro, something i have done for many years with a smart keyboard.

In order to do this, I use a voiceover keyboard command   option, control, shift an  m to mark the app I wish to move.

I go to the designated folder where I want the app to go and press the same combination of key strokes.

I am using a smart keyboard but have used the key strokes for a long time with great success.

But recently the key strokes worked intermitently and I went to my Apple store  for help.

We learned this keyboard problem was a known bug not fixed in the   current operating system but perhaps it is fixed in the public beta.

Do you know if this is true or do any of your listeners know.

Thanks for all of your great podcasts.

    i wouldn't miss a show.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote

“The iconic Apple iPhone will either not exist or occupy a very small niche satisfying the needs of committed Mac fans around five years from now.”

    Eugene Kaspersky, Kaspersky Lab,

    27 April 2010

Oh missed it by that much - It is safe to say in most industrial markets - the iPhone is a lot more than a niche and this is over 6 years from when Eugene mis read those tea leaves - Just Sayin.

    http://appadvice.com/post/a-look-at-whats-

    new-in-apples-ios-10-beta-2/717528

Well last week Apple released iOS 10 Beta 2 to Devs and also released it to the public beta testers - which it calls Public beta 1 - but to keep things simple - we will only use the Dev version name - which is iOS 10 beta 2.

With the beta being now available to the public that means more and more of you out there testing this out.

I am right now - just testing it on my iPad Pro - and so far so good for me.

Per what actually changed / was added from Beta 1.

Well first there is of course bug fixes and optimization tweaks.

They released the App store for iMessage - where you can get sticker packs.

Right now it just looks to be sticker packs from Apple - but when the beta is gone and it is Gold Master in Later September - then there will be options available from 3rd parties.

    —

Another item added - is the encouraging of organ donation.   Apple actually had a press release on this point on July 5th - where they talked about teaming up with Donate Life America - where iPhone users quote will be able to sign up to be an organ, eye and tissue donor right from the Health app with the release of iOS 10. Through a simple sign up process, iPhone users can learn more and take action with just a few taps. All registrations submitted from iPhone are sent directly to the National Donate Life Registry managed by Donate Life America. The ability to quickly and easily become a nationally-registered donor enables people to carry their decision with them wherever they go. unquote.

If you are not registered as an organ donor - you should be - make sure you go through the process when you upgrade to iOS 10.  And in the mean time - sign that spot on your drivers license.

    ——

Some additional tweaks / minor changes in beta 2 include

3D Touch for the flashlight now gives 3 different options - Bright light, medium light and low light. Previously they were labeled as Bright Intensity, medium intensity and low intensity.  That engineer has been reprimanded.

In the Messages section of settings there is a new feature to allow you to send images in a lower quality mode.

    ——

Also found in Beta 2 - is that the live Broadcast feature mentioned at WWDC is now turned on.  And with Swift Playgrounds - being the first apps to support that feature. There is an extended menu in Swift playgrounds Apps that offers a broadcast live option selecting that option lets you pick apps that allow broadcasting - like Twitch or Youtube Gaming.

HOWEVER this feature of live broadcasting only appears to be available for iOS devices with the 64 Bit processor - i.e. iPhone 5S and newer.

    ====

Autolock is now under display and brightness settings.

There are new wallpapers at the bottom of the list in Wallpaper settings.

You can access widgets from notification center on Home screen.

Airdrop in control center now displays “Receiving Off”

The Apple News App can now be hidden.

App store split view now actually works on the iPad.

AirPlay slash bluetooth headphones and speakers available in now playing for the Apple Music app.

There is the handwriting keyboard button on the iPad in the Messages app.

There is a new Bedtime wake up Sounds in the Clock App.  open the clock app - go to the Bedtime tab - and click options in the upper left - and you will see - Wake up Sound.

    ——

One of the bigger updates for those running iOS 10 beta 2 on an iPhone is voice mail transcriptions.  Nothing special to turn on - just if you have visual voicemail - which you most likely do - then transcriptions will start showing for you for new voicemail messages. If the bots had a hard time transcribing your message - they will flag the transcription with quote - Low confidence unquote right above the transcription.

This is a feature rolling its way out to users - so some users may not see it yet - but really most should be seeing it now.  If you have an iPhone and are running iOS 10 beta 2 and received one of these transcriptions - how good was it?  Was it close or hilariously wrong?  give us a call - 206-666-6364 - that is 206-moon-dog and let us know.

And there are many many other tweaks and slight updates from Beta 1 to beta 2.  Let me also now of you favorite or least favorite change from beta 1.

    ios/5-hidden-ios-10-features-that-are-

    instant-game-changers.html

As I mentioned previously there are a lot of articles going over that authors favorite new features in iOS 10.

This time we will look at an article in Mac world from Oscar Raymundo.  He had 5 favorite new features.

    1. Maps - Find my car - this is where Siri automatically flags where you car is when you get out of it.  Or as I like to call it - The My Wife has a feature created just for her feature.

    2. Control Center - Change flashlight intensity.  This is for 3D touch iPhones right now - and we mentioned before - intensity is now replace by the word light when picking the brightness level.

    3. Music keeps playing when Camera opens - this is for those with Live Photos.  Previously if you had live photos enabled - when you opened the Photo app - it killed any audio you had playing.

    4. Mail - Easy unsubscribe.  Now when you get an email from a subscriber list - likely one you had no idea how you got on in the first place - the unsubscribe link is no longer buried at the bottom of the email - but place at the top.  Where it is easy - much easier to tap and get out of.

    5. Music now has optimize storage - which is really needed for all those poor souls that purchased a 16 what was I thinking GB iPhone. This feature looks at your available storage level and looks at your music usage and based on songs you have not listened to recently starts removing said music to free up space.

    black-market-1-143000265.html

There has been in the past a lot made about how much the FBI paid to get that iPhone 5C unlocked.  Most put it north of $1 Million dollars. So how do Apple feel about this - well surprisingly - they seem to like that high dollar amount.

This is what Ivan Krstic Head of Security engineering and architecture for Appel said about the $1 Million dollar plus price tag paid.

    quote

As probably most of you know, there is a black market for software vulnerabilities, and once in a while some of the prices on the black market become known, Usually these prices are tens of thousands of dollars, sometimes $100,000. Those are prices for software like Microsoft Windows or Google's Android — but the prices for iPhone hacks are much, much higher. Take that with a grain of salt, but it's a fascinating number to think about," What you're seeing now is the result of a decade of our best work in protecting our users.”

Some Apple TV 4th gen news.

Apple has added Comedy Central, MTV and VH1 to the universal search feature.

In the US - that brings 35 different apps / services that universal search can search through.

If you are in Australia, Canada, France, Germany and the UK - you can search through 2 - iTunes for Movies and Music and Netflix.

So a little bit of a gap there.

I want to Thank Boll and Branch for sponsoring this episode.

The sheets from Boll and Branch are made from 100% organic cotton - because organic cotton is incredibly soft.  And the sheets get softer each time you wash them.

With Boll and Branch You’ll get the nicest sheets you’ve ever owned for about half the price of what stores and boutiques would be charging for sheets of far lower quality.  I really could not believe how excited my wife was to get these new sheets.  And the box they came in and the individual pouches for the sheets and pillow cases - well the presentation was incredible and very Apple-Esq

Go to Boll and Branch Dot Com today for 20% off your entire order.  And use promo code TII.

Again that is Boll and Branch Dot Com.  Promo code TII.

These sheets are only sold online at boll and branch dot com - you can’t buy them in any stores.  That is how they keep the pricing low and free of markups.

Hey Rob, finally got iOS 10 installed thanks. Not a whole lot of feedback yet, definitely looking forward to playing around with The Playgrounds app with my seven-year-old son though.

One bit of feedback I have so far though, the keyboard is totally buggy. If I switch to numbers it switches back to letters, if I switch to caps it cap locks, if I try to go back to lowercase it shifts. It is almost to the point where it's unusable. I'm recording this via Siri right now.

I know with betas come bugs so I'm not complaining, just giving you the heads up on my experience.

    Love the show.

    Regards,

    Aric Boyles

    Hi Rob,

Quick note to you hoping I can get my review of iOS 10.0 Dev beta 2 to you before episode 398.

I myself can only vouch for my iPhone 6+ 64Gig.  However, Peyton who by the way was not named after a certain football player but for the term Petabyte (long story) our 9 year old son reports a pleasant experience so far on his iPad Air 2.  FYI, he would of given me a more detailed review of 10.0 beta 2 but is obsessed on getting Happy Chick working so he can play NES games that were out 20+ years before he was born.

    Anyway, back to my review.

iOS 10.0 developer beta 2 absolutely rocks.  So far it is running Velvety smooth.  I have been using the update for the past 8 hours at writing this email and the experience has been flawless.  No freeze ups, no what look like reboots or any of that stuff.  Just a nice smooth uniformed performance.

That is it for me.  If anything else comes up that may be worth bringing to the TII community's attention, I'll check back with you.

To sum up my email?  Bring on the public beta!

    Have a great week!

    Shane Cashin

    Hi Rob,

Tonight I updated my iPad Air2 to the iOS 10 Public Beta everything's working great.

    Regards

    J

    Hi Rob,

I updated to iOS 10 beta and I was hoping that we can set default email apps without having to use the stock mail app. So I once I deleted the stock app, I went onto safari and clicked on an email link and received a pop up message that told me to re download (or restore) the stock mail app. Apple's walled garden is kind of frustrating.

    Regards,

    Alberto J

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from MYRON UECKER ON JULY 9TH who posted the following

    quote

One nice feature of the iOS 10 music player is the downloads section that show only music on your device. Finally a way to play only what I downloaded and not my entire library!

    unquote

    To which -

    DAVE T replied

    quote

Don't I already see that on my iOS 9 phone?

    unquote

    AND THEN MYRON UECKER REPLIED:

    QUOTE

There is the ability to only show music on this device in iOS 9. It has never worked properly for me. On my iPhone it simply grays out the music not on my phone and cycles through it anyway on random mode. I was never able to figure out how to randomly play only music on my device. In iOS 10 there really is a way to see only what is on your device and random mode works as expected.

I will do a blog post later than night - I am traveling that afternoon - so no episode that night or coverage right after.  I will talk more next week on speculation on iPhone and iPad sales.  But really this is not a very meaningful quarter - it is the next one that is where things might get interesting.

    apple-phone/apple-lowers-iphone-trade-up-

    credit-abandons-interest-free-financing.html

Hi Rob, FYI. Dr. John M

Seems Apple is lowering their iPhone trade up credit and also getting rid of the interest free financing.

Originally users could get up to $300 credit from their older smartphones - now it is reduced to $250 max credit.

Currently on the Apple site the estimated trade in value varies from $50 for an iPhone 4S to $225 for an iPhone 6 and $250 for an iPhone 6Plus.

They are not at this time accepting iPhone 6S or 6S plus for trade in because you know - there is nothing to trade up to at this time.  Well at least not for the 6S Plus.

And previously Apple was offering interest free financing via Citizens bank - now apple is reverting that back to the Carriers to manage the finances - because you know nothing bad could ever come out letting the carriers manage it.

Long of the short - is if you thought you knew how apples trade in programmed worked - well kudos for being that person.  But now things have changed.

    36683517/spotify-accuses-apple-of-blocking-

    app-and-using-store-as-weapon-

    to-harm-competitors

Spotify got all in a lather over Apple rejecting their most recent updates to the Spotify app - and they accused apple of doing this for anti-competitive reasons.

Spotify general Counsel said Quote The move is causing grave harm, We cannot stand by as Apple uses the App Store approval process as a weapon to harm competitors. This latest episode raises serious concerns under both US and EU competition law. It continues a troubling pattern of behaviour by Apple to exclude and diminish the competitiveness of Spotify on iOS and as a rival to Apple Music, particularly when seen against the backdrop of Apple's previous anticompetitive conduct aimed at Spotify unquote

That was said in a letter they sent to Apples Lawyers - which Spotify legal counsel also you know accidentally - on purpose leaked to the press.

Well them is fighting words and actions - said Apple’s Lawyers - well maybe that’s not exactly what they said.

Actually What Bruce Sewell - Apple general Counsel said to Spotify was quote

We find it troubling that you are asking for exemptions to the rules we apply to all developers and are publicly resorting to rumors and half-truths about our service.  We did not alter our behaviour or our rules when we introduced our own music streaming service or when Spotify became a competitor, Ironically, it is now Spotify that wants things to be different by asking for preferential treatment from Apple.  I would be happy to facilitate an expeditious review and approval of your app as soon as you provide us with something that is compliant with the App Store's rules”

Rumor time - and back to the iPhone 7 - and it seems one of the reports is it will have a bigger battery.

The rumor / leak is the iPhone 7 battery would be 1,960 mAh battery vs the current 1,715 mAh battery in the iPhone 6S.

The A10 is also supposed to improve battery life - so to see a 20% increase in battery life or more for the iPhone 7 vs the iPhone 6S is not really a stretch.

Expect more and more of these part leak rumors to pop up over the next two months.

more rumors around the iPhone 7 and 7 plus revolve around the name and Apple possibly going to iphone and iPhone Pro for the 4.7 and 5.5 inch version respectively.

There are also rumors of faster charging for the next gen iPhones.

And of course there is the on again / off again - but mostly on again rumor that the HeadPhone jack is going the way of Floppy disks and fire wire ports.

There is an article in 9 to 5 mac that talks about the average length of time Apple supports a type of port - and that average is 15 years.  Currently the headphone jack has been supported as is by Apple for 32 years.

So maybe the on again rumor camp - that is the group saying yes Apple will kill the headphone jack - maybe the on again rumor camp is right after all.

    technology/apple-patent-stop-phone-

    recording/index.html

One of the things Apple does - and does a lot of is file patents - and they file patents on things they never plan to use or roll out - but just in case and because they can - they file patents - and some times people look at those patents and say well if Apple was granted the patent they are going to do this.

And this is one of those cases and one I say some strong negative tones around.

Apple was granted a patent where they could put in technology to disable a phones photo and video recording capabilities using an infrared signal.

The theory is that in theaters or concerts the people running the event could kill of the camera.  That is the theory.

Here is why Apple will not implement that tech.  Human Rights violations.

The Smartphone does a great job of recording these.  And if Any one that ran a movie theater could get their hands on the tech to kill your camera - then clearly any repressive regime could get their hands on that tech to kill off cameras where ever their soldiers or thugs went.  Especially at quote peaceful rallies unquote

IF you think Tim Cook did not think about that possibility you are greatly mistaken.  There is no way Apple rolls out that tech - no way.

    Hi Rob,

As the iPod Touch 5th gen is excluded from the forthcoming iOS update, will I still be able to purchase music and update the music app?

The Scribble feature on the new watchOS looks great, probably faster than conventional texting. Do you think this should be an option on iOS?

Thanks for all the hard work.

    Best wishes,

    Alf, Sheffield, England.

    Hey Rob,

Last week a listener mentioned their headphone jack wasn't working on their iPad Pro 9.7" after installing iOS 10. He thought it might have something to do with the rumored replacement of the 3.5mm jack by the lightning port. The same thing happened to me on my iPad Pro 9.7" so I went looking for a solution. Most forum posts said to do a full reset, but I found one comment that said just to turn hey Siri off - and sure enough that worked for me.

So it seems like the non-working headphone jack in iOS 10 is really just a bug, not necessarily a sign of things to come.

Thanks again for the great show.

    Hi Rob,

I'm hearing lots about maybe there will maybe there won't be a jack on new iPhone 7 for headphones. If so could you or the listeners recommend a good Bluetooth in ear set. Music is my main priority as opposed to calling.

I currently use the Jabra sport coach in ear headphones and they are just ok.

    Thanks for all you do.

    Hi Rob,

I was in NYC recently and as usual I went to Harry's for my razor blades and the staff were saying they're working on being able to send blades to uk. Great news on the best blades on the market. Love the show.

    Regards

    Gerry. from Glasgow. Scotland

and folks if you go to harrys dot com - that is h a r r y s dot com and use the promo code t i i - you will save $5 on your first order.

As I said before the blades are incredible - there are 5 of them - not 3 or 4 - but 5.  No cuts - no burn - and the best shave I have ever had and at a really great price.  Why Pay $32 for an 8 pack of blades when you can get them 1/2 that price at Harrys.com   And yes I do buy them - they don’t just send me samples all the time.  I actually now have enough blades to get me through not just 2016 but also likely most if not all of 2017 as well.

To get the best blades - Harry's went and found a German blade factory that was almost 100 years old and purchased it.  Harry’s owns the most important part of the razor - the blade and by cutting out the middle men on both sides means they can keep the price low to you.

Also absolutely the best shaving gel.  No Phosphates not toxic chemicals - just good stuff for your skin. Harrys cares more about you then putting cheap chemicals in their products to save a couple of penny’s a can. Kudos Harrys.

Plus Harrys as an organization helps those looking for jobs - by donating 1% of their sales and 1% of their time to help prepare people for professional success.  Yes a shave that feels great from a company you can feel great about.

Once again go to Harrys.com now and save $5 off when you enter the code - t i i with your first purchase.  That is h a r r y s dot com and enter the coupon code T I I at check out to save $5 on your first purchase and start shaving better.

Hi Rob, I was recently given your contact information as someone who might be able to point me in the right direction. We are launching an exciting new product called FireFlies. FireFlies are completely wire-free earbuds similar to Earin, Bragi Dash, and others that have recently been announced… except unlike these other products, Fireflies do not cost $300. FireFlies are the first affordable wire-free earbuds and will be available for just $79 on Tuesday, July 5th. We have worked very hard for the last two years so that the average person can afford this awesome new technology! Here is a brief product overview: www.firefliesaudio.com

We need help spreading the word. I am hoping to discuss this product with the right writer at Today in iOS for audio electronics/gadgets. Please let me know if you can direct me to the right contact. Thanks! KC Corbett www.firefliesaudio.com

    Hi KC,

Thanks for the heads up - I will feature this in our next episode - Ep 398 - which should be out this week.

Best of luck with the campaign.

What is the expected battery life from a full charge?  All it says that I could find is:

" two tiny ear buds that can play stereo Bluetooth audio for hours”

Is that 1.1 hours or 2 hours or 4 hours or

    Thanks

    Rob W

    Thanks for your support Rob!

The battery life of the earbuds is 3 hours.  So, after listening to 3 hours of stereo audio, you can put the earbuds their carrying case and get 3 additional full charges on the go via the carrying case.  Once you have listened for 12 hours total, you can recharge the carrying case.

Please let me know if there is any other info I can provide you with and thanks again!

    Best,

    KC

Thanks to KC for his reply.  The project again is called - FireFlies - one word with flies - spelled - F L I E S

Luck it seems KC did not need - the project had a modest goal of $20,000 - it has raised over $270,000 - Way to Go KC.

The early bird special of $79 are all gone - the pricing is now $99 - and likely those will be gone soon - and then it will be $119.

What you get for $99 or $119 - is a set of the FireFlies ear buds,  The Charging Pod - which is really nice.  extra silicone tips and locking wings - plus a micro-USB cable for the Charging Pod.  You do not plug into the earbuds - you plug into the charging pod - and that recharges the earbuds.  That is a better way to do it then trying to get the connectors on the earbuds.

I guess the best thing to say - is don’t wait for apple to remove the head phone jack - get out in front of them and show you don’t need it anyway.

Search for FireFlies in the show notes for Ep 398.

An Apple Watch Beta Tip from Robert Spivack in out Google+ community.

    Quote

WatchOS 3 beta tip - make a backup first

If you are installing WatchOS beta software (or will install later this month when the public betas start appearing), here's a quick tip:

Make a backup of your Apple Watch software/configuration first. Apple only provides an indirect way to backup your watch which many people many not be aware of.

Run the Watch configuration app on your iPhone, select your Apple Watch, unpair the watch, and then setup up the watch again restoring from backup (don't select "setup as new watch").

Unpairing your Apple watch generates a backup of the watch and configuration at that moment.

Please note that unpairing is a slow process and setting it up again by restoring from a backup is even slower, so allocate a lot of time (1 to 2 hours) to do this.

Leave both your Apple watch and your iPhone plugged-in and charging to avoid any power-related problems.
