    http://www.zdnet.com/article/apple-releases-important-

    security-update-for-iphone-after-malware-found/

Well that update was unexpected and I am talking about iOS 9.3.5 which Apple released on Thursday and which has to start today’s show.

iOS 9.3.5 patches a zero day bug.  IE - one built into iOS - and apparently in there since iOS 7.

Actually it patches three different vulnerabilities.  These could be used for nothing major - just to access the devices location, or to read contacts, texts, calls and emails as well as turn on the devices microphone.

And worse yet there was a company in Israel that created spyware to exploit these vulnerabilities.

The good news is you can patch all this by simply updating to iOS 9.3.5 - which yeah - you really should do.

And you should thank Human Rights Activit - Ahmed Mansoor.

Mansoor is a citizen of the United Arab Emirates - and he was someone the Government there looked at as a menace and someone that needed to be spied on.

Note Mansoor is someone his government has not treated well over the years to say the least with imprisonment, beatings, and a travel ban - so you know to make sure the imprisonment and beatings could continue.  Well they also liked to spy on him and tried many times.  In the past they sent him a PDF packed full of spy ware - which he did not open.  And early in August he received two unsolicited SMS message on his iPhone 6 - which contained links to quote secrets concerning Detainees in UAE prisons unquote.  Well luckily for all of us - he did not bite.  But rather he forwarded them to The Citizen Lab - and Citizen Lab researchers working with the security company Lookout found that  those SMS messages were a series of Zero Day exploits designed to take over Mansoor’s iphone in hopes of spying on him.

From the Citizen Labs blog quote Had he followed those links, Mansoor’s iPhone would have been turned into a sophisticated bugging device controlled by UAE security agencies. They would have been able to turn on his iPhone’s camera and microphone to record Mansoor and anything nearby, without him being wise about it. They would have been able to log his emails and calls — even those that are encrypted end-to-end. And, of course, they would have been able to track his precise whereabouts. unquote

If you read the part in the article about the company behind the spyware and the triple exploit - it sounds like something out of Spy novel.

Quote our team was able to positively link the exploit infrastructure behind these exploits to an obscure company called “NSO Group”.

Don’t look for them online; NSO Group doesn’t have a website. They are an Israeli-based “cyber war” company owned by an American venture capital firm, Francisco Partners Management, and founded by alumni of the infamous Israeli signals intelligence agency, Unit 8200.  This unit is among the most highly ranked state agencies for cyber espionage, and is allegedly responsible (along with the U.S. NSA) for the so-called “Stuxnet” cyber attack on Iran’s nuclear enrichment facilities. unquote

The irony in all this is Apple’s biggest issue with developing a back door was fear that some government would use that access to track down its citizens and those calling out human rights violations and that is EXACTLY what happened here.  Mansoor is not a terrorist he is a human’s rights activist and the UAE right now is being looked at by the CIA and NSA and Israel intelligence as a bumbling fool for wasting 3 zero day exploits on Mansoor.

I can tell you right now - the October 4ths SOYC con also known as the Spy on your citizens Conference which is held each year at Fort Meed - well its going to be pretty awkward for the UAE representative when he shows up. Check in might go like this.

Hello I am His Excellency Jassem Bu Ataba Al Zaabi, director general of NESA from the UAE looking for my badge and a free Bag oh and can I get one of those double connect lanyards. I just hate the ones with the single connect in the middle they always flip around and having to say my name over and over - well it could be a very long night.

To which the person at the check in desk would look him up in the computer and say the following:

    PLAY YOU GET NOTHING

I do not want to down play the seriousness of these three exploits and what this spyware could do - and if you have not updated to iOS 9.3.5 - then you need to do so right away.

Luckily any iOS device running iOS 9.X is able to get the update now.

Citizen lap stated that once they realized what they had - the contacted Apple with a responsible disclosure concerning the Zero Day exploits - and they stated Apple responded immediately.

And by the time you get this far in you are thinking - well I just will go to Android - ummm - yeah - they have had these type of Zero day exploits for years and they were known and for most Android devices they are still not patched.

Imagine what that Israeli company has created for Android devices.   And that is something Citizen Lab and Lookout researchers basically said when they said there is evidence that the Group has ways to get this spyware onto other mobile operating systems - notably Android.

This next bit will definitely sound fan boyish - but At least with iOS - when something this bad is discovered - within 2 weeks - Apple was able create and roll out the update where it was instantly available to all of its users of iOS 9.  Something not even remotely possible on the Android side.

Again I do not want to down play this issue - so I will leave on this note - it was a bad group of exploits that were being used for the worst of reasons where a government was trying to spy on one of its citizens who is known for calling out the government for human rights violations.  If anyone ever had any doubt about Apples stance vs the FBI - this hopefully will but that doubt to rest - Apple was right - there are bad people and governments out there looking for exploits - and the FBI asking Apple to create a new exploit was the wrong call by the FBI.

Now go and update your iOS device and come back and finish the rest of the episode once you do.

Into the email bag on this subject.

    Hi Rob,

I'm sure you've seen the latest update, but here are a couple fascinating if not

unnerving articles with regard to the phone hack.

One titled - The Cost of using Zero-Days - by Nicholas Weaver at Lawfareblog dot com

and the other titled - Government Hackers caught using unprecedented iphone Spy Tool over at vice.com

My favorite quote from the first article by Weaver is

quote “It is time to update your iPhone software. Today. (And if you have a non-Nexus

Android phone then you need to “upgrade” by throwing that directly into a trash

    can).” unquote

    Regards,

    brian

Thanks for the links - And I really liked the time line spelled out in the article by Weaver this is an officemate of the folks from Citizen Labs.  And here was the time line with dates.

August 10th the text SMS messages are sent to Ahmed Mansoor who then sends them to Citizen Labs.

They captured the Zero Day vulnerabilities on August 11th.

They reported them to Apple on August 15th and Apple Patched them on August 24th.

That article also pointed out that it takes a triple Exploit to really take control of an iOS device.

    quote

To exploit an iPhone you need more than a single vulnerability, functional exploits are chains of two or three. In this case the "Trident" attack required exploiting a chain of vulnerabilities: a corruption in WebKit to take over Safari, a kernel memory disclosure vulnerability necessary to bypass the kernel's defenses, and a kernel memory corruption used to take over the phone.

    unquote

In the second article - there is an actual quote from NSO - the company that made the spyware called pegasus - that was busted.

NSO's spokesperson Zamir Dahbash said the company’s  quote mission is to help make the world a safer place by providing authorized governments with technology that helps them combat terror and crime. unquote

Hmmm - no where in there do they mention spying on Human Rights Activists.  Guess that is buried at little further down in their company mission statement.

Oh wait they went on to say quote

“The agreements signed with the company's customers require that the company's products only be used in a lawful manner. Specifically, the products may only be used for the prevention and investigation of crimes.“

    unquote

Oh well that changes everything - as long as you have a contract that says that I am sure no government would ever miss use your software.  I mean if you don’t count the ones that already have and then got busted doing so and lead to a patch that broke your software and cost you millions of dollars in sales and R&D for the update.  Karma

    http://bgr.com/2016/08/26/ios-10-beta-8-download-public-

    beta-7-released/

iOS 10 beta 8 also was released last week - and what at first just looked like a security patch for the Triple Exploits - actually had a few other minor tweaks.

Apple Music has a new look as does Apple News App.  And I am sure there are other bug fixes and stability improvements - but really iOS 10 beta 8 was about patching the triple ZeroDay exploits.

Obviously if you are a dev or public beta tester - then you need to update right away to the latest version of the beta - it will patch that bad security bug we talked about.

And now - I think finally that is the last Beta we will see for iOS 10.

    14:12

    http://www.apple.com/apple-events/september-2016/

Well Apple confirmed what we said was going to be the case back on Episode 400 which goes to my Blog post - Apple Fall Event 2016 confirmed for Sept 7th.

This really was not surprising news to anyone covering the space - yet - I did see a few articles surprised by this - Really???

As I said previously the Sept 7th date make a lot of sense based on it being the first day of CTIA super mobility 2016.  And Apple wanting to get the iPhones for sale on Sep 16th - meaning they really had to do the event that day.

The event will be live streamed from the Bill Graham Civic Center in San Francisco - and the next episode of Tii will be out the afternoon or evening of September 7th - going over all the specs that made it into the next gen iphone and all the ones that missed.  Plus any other announcements and all or any surprise announcements.

The Tag line for the event this year is - See you on the 7th.

Some are speculating that means Apple will be adding face detection for unlocking phones - and others saying it is per the update to the dual cameras.

The invite this time is a bunch of circles 45 by my count - with many different colors and levels of transparency.

I think the 45 circles represent the number of countries that will get the iPhone 7 or whatever it will be called in the first month - or maybe there is absolutely no relevance at all with the number of circles and I just wasted a couple of minutes counting and recounting all circles. Nahhh - must be about the number of countries it will be rolled out to in the first month.

Later on we will go over what specs we think will be introduced - but right now - it is safe to say the first part of that blog post on the September 7th even at 10:00 AM PT was dead on.  Now to see if the Saturday September 10th at 12:01 AM PT will be the pre-order time or will it be September 9th at 12:01 AM PT.

I mentioned the last time I talked about Harrys that they have their new Gen 2 blade - as I said they took the best Razor and made it the bestest Razor I have ever used.

It is still the great 5 blade razor - but they made some improvements - It is more flexible for better control and more comfortable shaving.   They added a 6 th blade at the top for trimming hard to reach spots, and they still of course have the lubricating strip.

They also sent me some of their After Shave Balm.  This is incredible - it soothes and moisturizes and best of all my Wife says it makes me smell really good - really really good.  And yes having your significant other liking how you smell is a very good thing.

if you go to harrys dot com - that is h a r r y s dot com and use the promo code t i i - you will save $5 on your first order.  That is right - first time customers for just $10 can get the starter kit when you use promo code T i i at checkout.

And Harry’s starter set is an amazing deal.  You get a weighted razor handle of your choice, moisturizing shave cream, 3 precision-engineered Gen 2 blade cartridges, and a travel cover – all for just $10 bucks for first time buyers when you use promo code tii at check out.

To get the bestest blades - Harry's went and found a German blade factory that was almost 100 years old and purchased it.  Harry’s owns the most important part of the razor - the blade and by cutting out the middle men on both sides means they can keep the price low to you.  This is a great shave that does not feel like it cost a buck.

Plus Harrys as an organization helps those looking for jobs - by donating 1% of their sales and 1% of their time to help prepare people for professional success.  Yes a shave that feels great from a company you can feel great about.

Once again go to Harrys.com now and save $5 off when you enter the code - t i i with your first purchase.  That is h a r r y s dot com and enter the coupon code T I I at check out to save $5 on your first purchase and start shaving better.

    VOICEMAIL - Anita_MD_coverage_math.mp3

    Hi Rob,

OK let me try to understand this. To accept the premise that it's cheaper to pay out-of-pocket rather than to have AppleCare one would have to assume that AppleCare only allows for the repair of a broken glass once, or that your phone is never going to be crushed by a moving vehicle etc. The whole idea of having insurance is to cover for the unexpected. With your logic, One will never need to have car insurance If the deductible for a fender-bebder was more expensive than the cost of repair plus insurance. What happens if you totally a car/iPhone.

This is insurance coverage for multiple unexpected not just for broken glass. They may be cheaper insurance plans out there for example Square Trade which office you up to four claims with a $75 deductible.

    Regards,

    Glenn

Others mentioned the HP 8600 series. We have an 8600a plus, which is a few years old now. What is nice with those printers is the external ink tanks, which reduce cost because you mostly just buy ink. The print heads are expensive but you don't replace them often. We replaced our print heads once.

I  have a $79 HP Printer D110, and am on InstaPrint plan. I pay $2.99/mo for 50 pages, they know when I need new cartridges, so they send them in mail. I can send an email to my printer when I am out and come home and it has been printed. Print/copy/scan. I use AirPrint from iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro. Printer also does double-sided printing. I like it a lot. In one year I will pay $36, a lot cheaper than buying cartridges.

    And then I replied

    quote

I  just upgraded to the Epson Workforce WF-3640 - it is nice in that there are two trays - one for photo paper and one for regular paper. This means my wife can print photos from her iPhone and I can print what I need from my computer and no need to change paper. Works great with iOS devices. It was just $109 at Target.

    unquote

Thanks to Jerome Horowitz for the heads up that the Epson Workforce printer is just $99 at Staples.

Let me say this about the Epson WF-3640 and why I picked that one after looking at a lot of printers.  And it is that it has two trays - one you can put in Photo paper and one you put in Regular paper.  The printer is also ePrint friendly - so my Wife can print a photo from her iPhone and I can print a doc from my Computer - and I don’t have to change around the paper in the printer.  There are others that also have a special tray for photo paper - but the WF-3640 seemed to be the easiest to add paper to.  And you can add in a bunch for both.

    http://www.reuters.com/article/us-apple-lawsuit-touchscreens-idUSKCN1141OJ

Filed under the That did not take long category.

Remember last episode where I talked about TouchGate - where iPhone 6 and 6+ iPhones became touch unresponsive and a grey bar showed up at the top - and iFixit speculated that it was do to a bad design on one of the circuit boards.

Well now of course there is a class Action lawsuit that was filed on Saturday.  I guess I could have filed this under - Of course there is  category as well.

According to the lawsuit - quote

Apple has long been aware of the defect, which often surfaces after a flickering gray bar appears atop the touchscreens, but has refused to fix it.

The plaintiffs linked the problem to Apple's decision not to use a metal "shield" or "underfill" to protect the relevant parts, as it did on versions of the iPhone 5.

The iPhones are not fit for the purpose of use as smartphones because of the touchscreen defect," according to the complaint filed in federal court in San Jose, California.

    unquote

What will this mean for us that have an iPhone 6 or 6+ - well that is TBD - but likely - if you have this issue any time in the next year or two - and you bring it in to Apple - I have a feeling they will be repairing it for free.

As I said last time - more on this in the future for sure.

The Top 10 crashing Apps for Q2 2016 were in Order from worst to less worst were:

    SnapChat

    Instagram

    Facebook

    Facebook Messenger

    Google

    Pinterest

    WillyWonka

    http://www.computerworld.com/article/3112575/apple-ios/1-

    5m-us-iphone-users-are-about-to-switch-to-android.html

And all of this bad news for Apple is probably why Fluent put out data that lead to articles with titles like - 1.5 M US iPhone users are about to switch to Android - quote unquote.

However - when we look at how the data comes to be - and look as Android switchers to iOS - we see that 4 Million Android users will switch to iOS.

However all is not great news for Apple - leading up to the September 7th event - interest based on rumors is lets say muted at best.

A survey from Fluent found the following.

Just 31% of iPhone users think the new model will be a big deal.

just 28% think the new models will be a major improvement.

Which makes me wonder about the 3% that did not think it would be a major improvement but did think it would be a big deal? hmmm

56% of consumer  think Water proofing is important.

63% of consumer think the rumored loss of the headphone jack is a drawback.  The other 37% asked what is a head phone jack.

Of course all this data is thrown out the window once the September 7th event comes and we actually know what said next gen device really does or does not offer.

    34:36

    http://money.cnn.com/2016/08/24/technology/apple-iphone-

    headphone-jack/index.html

Speaking of the Headphone jack and the impending removal there of - one person that is not a fan of that removal is this guy that kinda knows Apple a little - The Woz.

He said quote "If it's missing the 3.5 millimeter earphone jack, that's going to tick off a lot of people,” unquote

Many people point to Bluetooth as the way to connect going forward rather than a dongle.

Steve Wozniak said quote "I would not use Bluetooth. I don't like wireless. I have cars where you can plug in the music, or go through Bluetooth, and Bluetooth just sounds so flat for the same music.

So there is one persons opinion prior to the Sep 7th announcement.

    https://www.amazon.com/iPhone-Spigen%C2%AE-Hybrid-

    Kickstand-Crystal/dp/B01J9DVEEY

Call it a leak - but really just likely a guess - Some iPhone 7 and 7+ cases started showing up on Amazon already.

Spigen has a whole bunch of iPhone 7 cases on Amazon.  But one place Spigen does not have any cases for sale - well that would be  Apple.com

STM, Mophie, Tech21, Otterbox, Evutec, Logitech and many others - yes - on Apple.com - but not Spigen - they are not an approved vendor by Apple.

So any info Spigen received for their iPhone 7 cases - did NOT come from Apple.  However in the past it was shown that Case Manufacturers were paying off people on the line to get iPhone enclosures early so they could make their cases prior to launch.  and it is possible - highly possible - Spigen spent a bunch of their money for exactly that purpose.

And if we look at the Spigen cases what do we learn.

    1. There are dual speakers on the bottom

    2. There is no headphone jack

    3. The Plus design has dual cameras.

    4. It is basically the same design as the iphone 6 and 6+ except per items 1, 2 and 3 above.

There were also iPhone 7 and 7+ cases from Ringke, Caseology, Luvvitt, Maxboost, and Trainium in Amazon and what they all have in common is the Dual Camera for the 7+ and no head phone jack on the bottom - oh and none of them are vendors at Apple dot com. Yeah that too.

    36:53

    https://9to5mac.com/2016/08/29/apple-event-date-iphone-7/

So now we are a week away - what is expected for the iPhone 7 and 7+ or what ever the next gen devices will be called?  And what else will be announced.

Well give me a call 206-666-6364 - that is 206-moon-dog and let me know your predictions prior to September 6th - and I will try to get them on the show.

I will also put up a bingo card prior to the event.

Right now I think from a top level of predictions here is where we go into the event.

New 4.7” and 5.5” designs that look very similar to the 6S and 6S+.

Except - no head phone jack and for the + model - dual cameras.

The device will likely be water Resistant - that is likely what Apple will site as a key reason for the removal of the headphone jack.

There will be either one or two new colors with Space Black most likely and a Dark Blue with a much smaller % chance.

Of course they will have an A10 processor.

The 16 never designed for 4K video GB version will be replaced by the 32 not really designed for 4K video either GB version on the low end.  With 128 ok you can buy me GB and 256 Fully future proofed GB versions also available.

The home button may go away and it be built into the screen.  The down side there is a crack to the screen - were before it was usable - maybe not so much now - plus what happens when you have a screen protector.  As an FYI - all the iPhone 7 and 7+ cases basically show it with still having a home button.

There will also be some other additional specs - which we will have on the Bingo card - but let me know which ones are missing that you think will or should happen.

It is also very likely new Mac Book Pro’s with a brand new design will be introduced - I really will not get into those.

An Apple Watch 2 is expected now to be the same size as the original Apple watch - but with a bigger battery.  That is also expected to have faster CPU in it and likely GPS.  But not Cellular.

There will likely be new iPad’s announced as well.

    But not new Apple TV’s.

Again give us a call or shoot us an email and let us know you predictions for the September 7th event.

    VOICEMAIL - Robert_SD_issue_passode_being_changed

    Hi Rob.

Like your other listener that reported it on the last episode, I too saw the message on my phone asking me to change my passcode, and while I didn't want to change it, I did so because I assumed it was a security measure Apple put there so I didn't think I had a choice, in the same way that you need to enter your passcode after a certain amount of time, rather than using TouchID. It never would have occurred to me that it was a bug, like your other listener thought.

    Matt

    anti-gravity-levitating-smartwatch-charger?ref=nav_search

This next one is under the category of you don’t need it - you want it.

IT is the LIFT Anti Gravity Levitating Smartwatch Charger and Lamp.

I guess the lamp was thrown in because you know the whole Anti Gravity charging your smartwatch thing on its own is just not enough.

This one had a goal of $44k - and has raised well north of $250k - because again it goes under you want it category.

You have until Thursday Sept 22nd at 11:56 AM CT if you wants win the day.

Anti Gravity as you know is not cheap - and you will need to levitate $159 out of your wallet to get this. That will get you the Lift charger or Orb

    Lift Base and Power Adapter.

There are other prices and options.  I will not bore you with them - and just say - Anti Gravity Charger

Estimated Delivery will be Oct 2016.

This works with both the Apple Watch and the Pebble Watch.

    https://9to5mac.com/2016/08/26/dropbox-password-change/

Thanks to Tosin O for the heads up on this next one - which is that Dropbox has announced it will be requiring some users to change their passwords.  It is not about accounts being compromised.

    Rather quote

If you signed up for Dropbox prior to mid-2012 and haven’t changed your password since, you’ll be prompted to update it the next time you sign in. We’re doing this purely as a preventive measure, and there is no indication that your account has been improperly accessed. We’re sorry for the inconvenience.

    unquote

If you are not prompted to change your password - then nothing is needed on your end - again just some users are being asked - and it is not a phishing scam - yet.  That said - the scammers will now start sending out emails asking you to click a link to change your password - so be leery of that.

Anytime you get an email asking you to click a link to change a password - don’t do it.

Go to a browser - manually type in the sites URL - and then log in and change the password.  NEVER EVER EVER click on a link in an email from anyone you were not specifically looking to get a link from - and in this case one that has publicly stated they are asking people to change your password.  The scammers know that right now Dropbox people are expecting an email about this and will pounce.  Be ready.

    Hi Rob,

I was on the road this week when my iPhone 5S stopped taking a charge.  I took it to the first repair shop I found and they fixed it by

replacing the lightning port.  While I was waiting for them to fix my phone, I started to wonder about the risks of having a third party repair your phone.  I am not talking about losing my data.  I am wondering if I should be worried about them getting access to my data/information

or installing malware on my phone.  Also, what precautions should I take if this happens again.

    Regards,

    Sir,

Your personal opinion when  you expect the Apple 2 watch to ship?

    Kind regards

Hi Mike - I would say with in about 30 days of the September 7th announcement maybe as much as 45 days later - but can’t imagine it later than that.  But we shall see.

    Rob,

My wife's iPhone 6 Plus has the touch issue. Once the phone is unlocked it just is unresponsive to touch about 30% of the time. She locks it and unlocks it again (sometimes several times to get it to respond). We just assumed it was related to having the screen replaced about a year ago. Looking forward to hearing any info regarding a fix.

    Thanks,

    Corey from Ohio

Hi Corey - hang in there - more to come on this in the future.

The only down side - is Apple may say since it was damaged and repaired by a third party you may have voided any warranty.  But again - lets see how this plays out - they may get very liberal in fixing the issue if it gets worse and bad or worse PR starts building up around it.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote

“The reliance by Apple and Android phones on the ‘app’ as the central metaphor is outdated.”  unquote

Chris Weber, President, head of North America, Nokia,

    10 August 2011

Those quote Outdated metaphors combined to limit Nokia branded smartphones to a staggering 0.7% global market share in Q1 of 2016.  Obviously Mr Weber’s definition of Outdated is much different then the rest of the worlds. Heck in Urban dictionary for Outdated the example given was quote He is so outdated, that he is unaware of anything popular on vine and he didn't even have a smartphone! unquote.  Rather fitting for Mr. Weber.

    https://adtmag.com/articles/2016/08/22/ios-10-beta-7.aspx

Apple did something last week I can't remember them ever doing before - they released TWO beta’s in the same calendar week.

iOS 10 Beta 7 came out on Friday the 19th - with iOS 10 Beta 6 coming out Monday the 15th.

To put things in perspective - last year for iOS 9 there were 5 beta’s with the last one released on August 6th.  The year before for iOS 8 - there was also 5 beta’s with the last one on August 4th.

So iOS 10 beta 7 is most likely the last beta - given it is two above the norm and 2 weeks later than expected.

It goes with out saying that Beta 7 squashed some bugs and oh yeah it improves things too.  What bugs and things were improved? well Apple had this for the official change log.

    • Voicemail transcription (beta) is available on iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone SE with Siri language set to English (United States or Canada).

    • People syncing is not enabled via iCloud Photo Library in iOS 10.

    • WebGeolocation now requires a secure (HTTPS) website to work on both iOS and macOS to prevent malicious use of location data.

    • Swift Playgrounds is included with iOS 10 beta 7. Swift Playgrounds beta 7 contains Learn to Code Part 1 and Learn to Code Part 2.

Beta 7 has been very stable for me - I updated on Friday right after it was released.

Here is some email feedback on iOS 10 beta 7.

    quote

    Hi Rob,

iOS 10 Developer Beta 7 has been released.  Not much to say about a 60MB update.  Other than to say more bugs squashed.

On a side note, my iPhone 6+ took an unusually longer time upgrading to Developer Beta 7.  It looked as if there were multiply attempts to update.  But I figure no more than 3 times.  In all, the update had taken me about 10-12 minutes to complete..

I figure that my phone was the exception when it came to the longer update time in relation to the download size.

    Regards,

    Shane

    article_0ababf6a-65de-5891-b9d3-650b05ba45da.html

I love reports like this next one.  Seems someone took the brand new top of the line Galaxy Note 7 - the one released this month - August 2016 and ran a speed test against last years iPhone 6S - the one released in September 2015 - 11 months before the Galaxy Note 7 - so how did the iPhone 6S hold up - how close in speed was it.

Well short answer - it was not close in speed at all - it toasted the Galaxy Note 7.  Actually toasted is a really mild term - it obliterated it.

For this test - the person doing it launches a bunch of the same apps on the different devices and in some of them does some task.  Then they go for a second lap and relaunch all the apps to see how quickly they reopen.  Not only was the iPhone 6S faster - it finished both laps well before the Galaxy Note 7 finished the first lap.

In fairness - in this tests - the iPhone 6S has beaten every Android phone thrown at it for the past 11 months.  That includes the Galaxy Note 5, Nexus 6P and every other quote high end Android phone unquote. So the iPhone 6S will retire never being beaten by and Android device.

Thus proving even when An Android Phone might have appeared to have a Technical specs advantage - the iPhones Hardware / Software integration was just to much of an advantage.

Will be very interesting to see how much faster the next Gen iPhones are.

    http://www.applemust.com/apple-earns-a-dollar-per-

    customer-per-day-analyst/

Intersting article about how much Apples makes per user per day.

Horace Dedius - broke out where Apples revenue comes from and then worked out that they make about $27 a month per customer on the low side and may be as high as $40 a month.  This versus the pennies per month that Facebook and Google collect and the few dollars a month that Amazon receives.

Now clearly I am not an average Apple customer - as I worked out my spend on Apple gear on average at over $6 a day for the past 12 months - and well well over $10 a day for the 12 months prior to that.

Still it is amazing to think how much money Apple makes per customer vs Facebook or google.   Which comes back to why I can never understand the market cap of Google vs Apple.

    http://swipetounlock.com/iphone-6-plus-design-

    defect-breaking-a-ton-of-devices/

The is a new potential issue popping up with the iPhone 6 and 6+ - and that is where there are more and more reports of these devices loosing the touch responsiveness and there is a small gray bar at the top.

This report is gaining steam because iFixit released a video going over the reported issue.

This is not an issue with the iphone 5S - and just seems to be for now the iPhone 6 and 6+ - and also NOT the 6S and 6S+.  Again Just the 6 and 6+

They speculate the reason for the issues are that the circuit board the Touch IC is on that is failing no longer has a metal covering offering additional rigidity.

Jesse Jones at iPad Rehab - a repair center for iOS devices - claims that  now around 50% of the devices she gets for repair are for the Touch IC issue.

There are more reports on this from other repair centers. From the blog post on iFixIt

    quote

Lots of repair pros are experiencing the same influx of faulty iPhones—most with flickering gray bars and all with glitchy touch functionality. Rami Odeh, a repair tech from New Orleans, sees up to 100 iPhone 6 and 6 Pluses a month that don’t respond well to touch. About half of the repairs sent to Michael Huie—the specialist behind Microsoldering.com—show symptoms of the same problem.

If you have had your iPhone 6 or 6+ have the issue where it is no longer touch responsive and / or is showing that gray bar at the top of the screen let me know.

Sadly I expect we will be hearing a lot more about this one in the future.

I want to Thank Boll and Branch for sponsoring this episode.

The sheets from Boll and Branch are made from 100% organic cotton - because organic cotton is incredibly soft.  And the sheets get softer each time you wash them.

With Boll and Branch You’ll get the nicest sheets you’ve ever owned for about half the price of what stores and boutiques would be charging for sheets of far lower quality.  We have had our sheets a year now and it is so obvious when it is the Boll and Branch sheets on the bed - they just feel so much better than our other sheets.

Go to Boll and Branch Dot Com today for 20% off your entire order.  And use promo code TII.

Again that is Boll and Branch Dot Com.  Promo code TII.

These sheets are only sold online at boll and branch dot com - you can’t buy them in any stores.  That is how they keep the pricing low and free of markups.

But here is the best part - don’t take my word for it - try them out yourself for 30 days risk free.  Boll and Branch is so sure your going to fall in love with their sheets that they give you 30 nights to try them out.  If you don’t love them for ANY reason - they will take them back and refund you without any hassle at all.

They also have towels - and the ones I purchased for my Wife are by far the best towels in the house - plus they have other cotton products.

Go online to Boll – that’s  B-O-L-L and Branch Dot Com.  and use promo code t i i  for 20% off your entire order: sheets, towels, blankets, duvet covers.. everything. Plus free shipping! And all their products come beautifully packaged in their signature boxes.

    Hi Rob,

I’m not sure if this is a feature on software versions below the current iOS 10 Betas, but I do have an answer to the question asked by the Uber driver who wants to push audio from Maps to a separate audio source while still allowing to play music to the car radio. On iOS 10 when on the navigation screen after putting in the desired location you can pull up on the bottom bar and you can then press the audio button and there will be an option below the “pause spoke audio” which will ask for where you want to audio to go to, and make sure it is set for the bluetooth connection. From there you should be able to choose the audio source it goes to. Could be possible for separate audio output than that of the music. Hope this works, and I love the show! Keep up the good work.

    Regards,

    Hi Rob,

The app Grub Hub for the iPhone has accessibility problems. Many times I’ve had to place an order 3 times as the program keeps crashing. The developers removed headers which makes navigating it difficult for blind and visually impaired users. Some blind people on a list I’m on have attempted to contact the developers. Their emails were ignored. From what I’ve heard from other blind and visually impaired users it once was very accessible.  I don’t know if you might address this on one of your podcasts or one of your blogs. It’s just another way of shutting us out of opportunities the sighted user takes for granted.

    Hi, Rob!

In regards to the person in episode 402 who was asking about which iPad Mini to get. I have the Mini 2 and I use VoiceOver.

It works very well. I can use Braille screen input.

And the screen size is good for traveling

Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts and comments in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

One thing I need to point out - The Tii Google+ community is NOT for putting up videos of your dog or iOS devices you have for sale.  It is about asking questions - answering questions - and posting links about news, tips and tricks related to iOS.  Dog videos - get you the ban hammer real quick same with any other NONE iOS related posts.  iTems for sale - in the past would just get removed - but going forward may get you the ban hammer as well.  Point is this WE ALL have iOS devices we could sell - and there are sites for doing just that - The Tii Community just is not one of those sites.

    iphone-waterproof-camera-patent/index.html

More rumors about the next iPhone being highly water resistant.

This in part coming from a recent patent Apple was awarded which highlights editing tools that could be used for underwater photos.  Ok one patent about an under water phone is not enough to really mean anything  - but when you add in previous patents around this topic - like the one for submersion detection circuitry - which would help iOS devices sense where they are being dipped into water or other liquids - but lets just stick with Water for now.

Another patent in late 2015 that Apple received was for a protective barrier that covers ports to make the area water-resistant.

And in March 2015 Apple was awarded a patent for a protective barrier to shield electronics from moisture.

I think the real question on all our minds though is - will we be able to pour champagne over our next gen iPhone with no issues.

Seems the rumors about the iPhone being delayed are starting up.

Well at least the 256 GB version.  Some are not speculating that while the iPhone 7 will go on sale on Sep 16th - the iPhone 7+ or Pro or what ever the top end device is called - it will not ship until Sep 23rd - at least for the 256 GB version - the 32 GB and 128 GB versions are supposed to ship on the 16th.

Again this time around for iPhones the 3 storage sizes are rumored to be 32 Barely enough GB’s.   128 Ahhh this feel good GB’s and 256 Hey Honey look at this funny thing the Dog is doing GB’s.

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2016/08/20/apple-

Previously we poo poed the though that there would be both an iPhone 7+ and iPhone 7 Pro - which would have meant two different units at the 5.5 Inch size.  IT seemed a little out there in the rumor mill.

And now it is being rumored that one of the 5.5 inchers is a goner.

So it would just be the iPhone 7 a 4.7 inch single back side camera iphone and the iPhone 7+ a 5.5 inch dual back side camera iphone.

Now the rumors about the Smart Connector - seem to be tied to the iPhone 7 Pro - meaning the iPhone 7 Plus will not have a smart connector.

The reason given in the rumor mill for the quote change in plans unquote - is that there are no longer any worries about getting dual camera modules.  If that was not the case and dual camera modules were constrained - then only the 7 Pro would have received it.

Again - it all sounds fishy at best.

For some time now - in aggregate the rumors pointed to a 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch upgraded iPhones.  With the 4.7 getting one larger camera module - and the 5.5 incher getting the dual camera module.

One other thing per the rumors of late are two new colors.

Joining Space Grey, Rose Gold, Gold and Silver - would be Space Black and Blue.

    Hi Rob,

My thoughts on the new iPhone I think it would be cool if they made a projector on the iPhone you could really watch a great movie any where you are located that way you are not limited to a small screen.

Think about you stop in a hotel get your Netflix out or movie on your iPhone put it against the wall you have it made. You don’t have to pay extra money to watch a show at the hotel.

Another rumor picking up steam of late is that there will be an update of the iPad Mini to the iPad Mini 5.

One of the rumors is it will be just 5 MM thick vs the current 6.1 MM thickness of the iPad Mini 4.  As it will be really think - it would use the same high strength aluminum that is in the iPhone 6S+ - to keep bendgate at bay.

Rose Gold would be a new color for it.

    3D touch would be added.

As would be water resistant construction.  Apple will not call it water proof - but Water Resistant is something Apple might start touting at events.

And the iPhone mini 5 would only have the A9 Processor and not the new A10 processor.  Which make sense as the iPad Mini 4 only has the A8 processor.

    Hi Rob,

I hope this is true.   Could be a nice replacement or substitute for a MacBook!

What do you think Rob of a 10.5 mid maxi pad?!

Would they cancel the mini or iPod touch?

    Regards,

    Michael

Thanks Michael - and this is per the rumor that in 2017 - Apple would update its larger iPad’s - and introduce the 2nd gen iPad Pro 12.9 inch and a new 10.5 inch iPad Pro and then a 9.7 Inch iPad - which likely would be a mix of the iPad Air 2 and the 9.7 inch iPad Pro specs.

Where as the 10.5 Inch iPad Pro would be an upgrade from the 9.7 inch iPad Pro.

That said - I just don’t see the 10.5 Inch version - it seems to needlessly add another screen size to the ecosystem that does not really buy you much.

Lets just say I am highly highly skeptical of the 10.5 Inch iPad Pro rumor.

    http://daringfireball.net/2016/08/bloomberg_apple_watch_2

Nice article from John Gruber on his Daring Fireball site.

He rips into the Bloomberg report about the Apple Watch 2 hitting production issues.

Here is a quote from the bloomerg article

    quote

Apple Inc. has hit roadblocks in making major changes that would connect its Watch to cellular networks and make it less dependent on the iPhone, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The company still plans to announce new watch models this fall boasting improvements to health tracking.

The updated versions will also be able to integrate GPS-based location tracking, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans aren’t public. An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment.

    unquote

The first thing John takes issue with is the use of current tense as in Apple just hit these issues - where as if Apple had any hope or plans to release a new Apple Watch in Sept / October - then they needed to have finalized specs and production plans back at the beginning of the year worst case.

As I have said all along the idea of adding all these specs to the Apple Watch 2 - including full cellular capabilities - while making it thinner - seemed the stuff of fantasy land.

John says while the article makes it out that Apple is disappointed the Apple Watch 2 will not have cellular connectivity - inside Apple he thinks there was never any serious thought about getting Cellular features until the 3rd or likely 4th gen version.

    Hi Rob & All!

    I'm wondering about something here...

I've been trying to back up all my iPhone photos and videos, trying out several different options.

So far, I'm having no issues backing up the photos to Dropbox and Google Photos, and the videos are backing up to Dropbox with ease.

What's got me puzzled is trying to save videos to Google Photos. I keep getting a message saying my phone is almost out of space (I have around 5 gig left after deleting a bunch of seldom-used apps). Why does it matter how much or how little space I have on my phone? There is unlimited space on the Google Photos site since I'm saving in lower resolution.

    Am I missing something?

The reason I want things backed up is for safe keeping (of course) but also so I can delete a bunch of photos and videos on my phone.

So why does the phone need more space available in order to back things up online?

Also, does anyone have suggestions for good online backup for photos and videos? I have backed them up to my PC using iTunes, but there is no way (as far as I know) to view  those backed-up files on the PC.

    Regards,

    - Tammy

You have heard me say it before On the nights or really early mornings I record the kids go sleep with mom - and I go and sleep in my Son’s Casper bed.  Kind of my reward for a long night getting out the show.

Casper Mattresses are a mix of Latex foam and Memory foam. No noisy springs to wake up your significant other when you get up to sneak a snack in the middle of the night or in my case when I slip in late at night. Time Magazine even named it one of the best inventions of 2015.

And with Casper you get a 100 day risk free trial period.  You don't like it you get your money back and they come and pick it back up and donate it to a charity.

    • Casper is an obsessively engineered mattress at a shockingly fair price.

.   Twin Mattresses are just $500, they also have Twin XL for $600, Full for $750, Queen for $850 and then King and Cal King - for  $950.  That is less much much less than my iPad Pro setup.  And as I said you have 100 days to return it risk free. And if you go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code tii - you will save $50 off those prices -   Terms and Conditions Apply.

This is an american made mattress with delivery right now for the US and Canada only and it is free delivery. And When said mattress is delivered - it is from UPS - in a squarish box that you think no way is there a mattress in there - But you get a cool little tool to cut open the package and the mattress opens up and expands to form.  It is really cool Just google Casper Mattress unboxing.

September is coming that means - you will likely be buying a new iOS device - why not also get a new mattress do something for your significant other and then you will not feel so guilty upgrading to the next iphone.

Again to Save $50 off of the prices I mentioned go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code t i i - all lower case on the promo code.  again casper dot com / tii - promo code tii to save $50 - thanks Casper for the great mattress for my show nights and for sponsoring this show.

This week for a Kickstarter project we have the Intrepid Travel Wallet for iPhone by Waterfield Designs.

They have two sizes - small for the 6 and 6S and most likely 7.  And Large for the 6+ and 6S+ and most likely 7+.

This one had a goal of $5,000 - and has raised over 7 times that number and growing and you have until Sep 26th at 1:59 AM CT to fund or really buy this one.  As it is well funded already.

Per what it is - quote

A WaterField (SFbags) play-through RFID-blocking travel wallet and iPhone case. Holds phone, passport, cash, credit cards, & more.

If that sounds like a man purse - bingo.

Pricing for this is $79 and that is for Run 2 - Run 1 is sold out.  Run 2 is expected to ship in October 2016.

One of the things on this Man purse - I mean Travel Wallet is that there is a front panel that allows you to use your iPhone while it is in your travel wallet.

They also have a padded and larger Gear Pouch and for $119 you can get both the Travel Wallet and the Gear Pouch.

Thanks BRIAN for the music and folks I will put the full song at the end of the episode.  I also want to thank DAN for sending in the Artwork for today's show.  DAN wrote the following:

    Hi Rob!

This was a photo I took of a flower in my friend’s mother’s garden using the stock camera app with my iPhone 6. I tweaked the photo when it was originally uploaded to Instagram with the app’s editing tools. I decided to take a copy of the photo and run it through the app Prisma and added a Tokyo filter at 86%. Finally I used the app Over to add the TII branding.

Thanks for all you do and keep up the great work!

“Can you imagine Windows Phone 7 in two years, powered by the twin engines of Nokia’s global reach and RIM’s enterprise base? It would be a powerhouse platform, the stuff of dreams for Ballmer—and nightmares for Apple and Google.” unquote

Peter Pachal, PC Mag, 4 May 2011 - this per speculation MS would buy RIM.

Well just a few years after that speculation MS in April 2014 finalized their deal to buy not RIM - but rather Nokia and for $7.9 Billion dollars.  And then in July 2015 - MS wrote off $7.6 Billion in Impairment charges - which you don’t need a calculator to see that is pretty much all they spent on it - OUCH.  Sounds like while Peter at PC Mag was wrong about his speculation on who MS was going to buy - MS really had to have been better off buying RIM or then again maybe not.  Either way the only one having nightmares in this case was Ballmer - not Apple and not Google.

    http://cydianerd.com/ios-10-beta-6-download-update/

And Apple is really rolling out the updates now.  Another week and another beta.  Beta 6 this time for iOS 10.

Of course key things with this update are Bug fixes and optimization.  Yada yada yada yada.

One new feature which we hoped was a feature and not a bug - was the ability to purchase with touch ID after a reboot with out the need for re-entering your passcode - that Feature slash bug - looks to be a feature as it is still active in iOS 10 Beta 6.

But really there were no new features anyone is reporting on - just bug fixes for  beta - and they are not worth going over.  Betas have bugs - new beta kill bugs from past beta - that what they do.

    Into the email bag

    Hi Rob,

Ever since installing iOS 10 beta 5, my Accessibility feature inverted screen color was slow to turn on and even slower to turn off.  Took me a few days to realize that it was the update that may have caused the issue.  Well I figured that an update would come in the next day or so and sure enough, beta 6 arrived and it works flawlessly.

Anyway, this accessibility feature is highly recommended for those who find it easier to read text that is White on Black.

Now, if we could get an option to either have some way to keep pics in their original color while in inverted mode or some sort of toggle switch on each pic, that would be awesome.

I have been running the iOS 10 betas on my iPhone the past week - first beta 5 and then beta 6.

The bugs at this point are minor.  And I really am enjoying the improved notifications.

A very interesting interview with Tim Cook in the Washington Post this week.  Look for the link - Tim Cook the interview - in the show notes for ep 402.

A few interesting points - one is that Tim Cook eventually sees Smartphone and people at a 1 to 1 ratio - meaning everyone will have a smartphone - TV’s globally are not even close to 1 to 1 and never will be 1 to 1.

Another really interesting bit from the interview was with regards of the Apple V FBI fight - and this quote from Tim - quote

Could we create a tool to unlock the phone? After a few days, we had determined yes, we could. Then the question was, ethically, should we? We thought, you know, that depends on whether we could contain it or not. Other people were involved in this, too — deep security experts and so forth, and it was apparent from those discussions that we couldn’t be assured.

The risk of what happens if it got out, we felt, could be incredibly terrible for public safety.

    unquote

It is interesting to hear Tim say they did know how to backdoor it - as in the past - there was always this message that they were not sure if it was possible.

The overall interview was very long and detailed and takes you into the culture of Apple and thoughts of Tim cook - I do recommend taking some time out to read it when you have a chance.

    http://www.zdnet.com/article/why-apple-likes-to-keep-secrets-

    and-why-it-has-a-lot-of-secrets-to-keep/

Another article in the culture of Apple is from ZDNet titled - Why Apple likes to keep secrets and why it has a lot of secrets to keep.

Eddy Cue - had this quote in the article.

    quote

"We don't want to tell the world what we want to solve, what we're trying to solve. Why? Because we haven't solved it. Other than trying to make ourselves look cool or good, what's the purpose of that? I don't understand that part of it. So, yeah, there are a bunch of things we're working on that we'd like to solve--some we've been working on for years and we haven't solved, for that matter. I don't feel like we should be tooting our own horns that we're trying to solve that problem, when we haven't really solved it."

    unquote

Makes sense - why talk about what you want to solve - if you have not solved it - 1. it gives the competition a head start on what to work on and 2. if you don’t solve it - people ask what is wrong with you for not solving that thing you said you would solve.

The article talks about R&D spending at Apple which has never been higher.

Prior to 2011 it was always under $2 Billion a year.  2013 it was at around $4 Billion.  2015 was about $8 Billion and this year will be over 10 Billion.  In other words - Apple is working on something.

This is good news for this show - because it means lots of future products to talk about.

    Spend baby - spend.

Seems Cyber crooks are targeting iPhone users who have had their iPhone stolen.  What they are doing is trying to steal their iCloud login details.

They try to trick the victim into giving up their Apple ID credentials - they do this by sending out a SMS and email with a link to click to show you the location of your stollen iOS device with what looks to be a legit iCloud login screen - it is however not legit and just a phishing scam.

So if you get your iOS device stolen look out for emails and SMS messages claiming to have discovered the location of your device and asking you to log in.

Only log in to find my iPhone App on a trusted iOS device and never sign into to a site where the link was sent to you.

Victim beware - don’t become a double victim.

Pokemon Go - really really makes me appreciate RING. How you ask - we are across the street from a library where there is a Pokemon Gym - and My sons friends have been coming by EVERY day multiple times asking for the boys so they can go over and get them some pokemons and whatever else you do at the Gyms.  And it seems our internal door bell is at frequency my kids can’t hear either that or they ignore it.  So I am able to just answer the door from my iPhone - tell the neighbor kids to hold on - and then call my son’s phone and tell him his friend or friends are at the front do.  No need to run down the stairs or leave my office - just answer on my iPhone.  I really really love my Ring - especially with Pokemon Go kicking up my kids popularity.

If you go to Ring dot com slash T i i - you will get for a limited Time $50 off the Ring of Security kit - which includes a video doorbell, Stick up Cam, solar Panel and indoor chime.

For the Video Door bell it quickly - and easily connects to your wired door bell wires.  The main unit is not something you have to worry about charging if you wire it up.  It took me all of twenty minutes if that to remove the old door bell and replace it with the Video Doorbell from Ring.

And you can also share access to it with others in your house. My Wife also gets access to the door bell and video.

If I can’t answer or even if I do - she can answer as well.

The RING doorbell has quickly become one of those accessories you can’t see yourself living with out ever again.

Beyond the front door - The Stick up Cam can be used to watch other parts of your house and also installs in minutes.

Go to ring dot com slash t i i - to save $50 off either Ring Security Kits.

Thanks Ring for sponsoring this episode.

    Hi Rob,

I have been using the Amazon basics lightning cables for the past year. While I would not consider them heavy duty, they are a good medium duty cable at a good price. They do not hold up forever but they last much longer than the cheap cables. Just my two cents

I have to agree with both Michael and Lawrence - in that you should get the latest and highest end version of the Mini - and you should wait until this fall where the iPad Mini is due for an upgrade - assuming you can wait until October for the next gen iPad Mini.

The reason to get the latest version is it will last you 4 years at least where it is updatable to the latest version of iOS.  You will get a longer useful life from the current top of the line version and with a new version likely to be announced next month - I recommend waiting to purchase until after the Sept 7th special event.

I thought I added this comment earlier. For the listener looking for Lightning cables, the ones I have been buying are from IXCC on Amazon. They offer various sizes and I'm impressed with the quality. Like all Lightning cables I have used so far, the gold plating will eventually wear off the middle connector. However, I have had several of their cables for a couple of years now and they still work well. Please note that the connectors are slightly larger on the longer cables, but they all fit through the openings on my Lifeproof case.

One thing to be careful on Amazon is to make sure you buy cables from the original manufacturer whenever possible. I once bought Belkin cables and they broke almost immediately. Since Belkin is generally a decent manufacturer, I'm pretty sure they were counterfeit.

    Hi Rob,

You asked for what my wishes are for the iPhone 7, well I'd like to see wireless charging in a form similar to Seiko's Kinetic system.

    http://www.seikowatches.com/world/technology/kinetic/

This would add a bit of charge throughout the day generated from movement rather than from solar or RF. I know this isn't likely and, given current technology, won't add scads of power to the phone. But it might give an extra 5-10% during the day for relatively active individuals. Perhaps they could use the space recovered from the headphone jack?

    Regards,

    Brian in Appleton, WI

Brian - while it would be nice to have something like that - the amount of energy generated vs what is used - is very very different than with a regular watch.  It was not even be an extra 5% during the day for the typical user.  Not even close.  There is a big difference how much your iPhone in your pock moves around in a day vs how much a watch moves around on your wrist.  And even there - the amount of energy needed to run your watch is insignificant compared to the power of the force touch panel on your iPhone.

So in theory it would be nice - in practice it would not make sense to use that space.  Better to just have more lithium Ion battery in that space.

    http://www.bandwidthblog.com/2016/08/11/apple-developing-

    non-watch-wearable/

One of the latest rumors is Apple is working on a new wearable that would supplement the apple watch but not actually be a watch.

Think of a health and fitness tracker.

Now here is what I don’t get.

Quote Apparently the product will sport a screen and will, similarly to the Apple Watch, make use of 3D touch. The report cites that the product has been in development for over two years under Jay Blahnik, an employee who – according to his LinkedIn profile – works on ‘special projects unquote.

So in reports on this they say it will not be a watch - but it will have a touch screen - so why not just display the time.

I can see Apple possibly doing a device that is meant just as a wearable fitness / health tracker - that is more robust than an Apple Watch - and does not have a screen.  But if  you put a touch screen on it - how is that NOT an Apple Watch.  I mean it would be ridiculous at that point NOT to put a watch option in it.

Do I think Apple is working on some sort of Non-Watch wearable - Sure - I would be surprised if they were not.  They work on lots of things.

Do I think they are working on a fitness tracker with a 3D touch screen - that will not have a watch feature on it - HECK NO.  That just does not make sense.

My wife daily uses Google Maps for directions and used them yesterday without issue. This morning, she's unable to use Google Maps as following the update location services are disabled and restrictions are enabled. No one used the device after she initiated the update last evening and only her and I live in the house, so it wasn't a child or a prank. Not sure what happened with the update. I received a package in the mail from Harrys late last month - it was their new updated Gen 2 Razors.

It is still the great 5 blade razor - but they made some improvements - It is more flexible for better control and more comfortable shaving.   They added a 6 th blade at the top for trimming hard to reach spots, and they still of course have the lubricating strip.

They took the best razor I have ever used and made it betterer or bestest.

And Harry’s starter set is an amazing deal.  You get a weighted razor handle of your choice, moisturizing shave cream, 3 precision-engineered 5-blade cartridges, and a travel cover – all for just $15 bucks. And, for a limited time only, there’s a special offer for fTii listeners where you can get it for less.

if you go to harrys dot com - that is h a r r y s dot com and use the promo code t i i - you will save $5 on your first order.  That is right - first time customers for just $10 can get the starter kit when you use promo code T i i at checkout.

Winters Coming and you know what that means - you need a jacket or dragon glass - but per this next item - lets just talk about the jacket.

There is a kickstarter project called HALLAM New York Smart Jacket for iPhone users.

Quote The world’s first smart jack for smartphone user / bluetooth wearable apparel NFC power bank charging LED GPS travel bike running music unquote

Huh - sounds like random keywords and not a sentence.

The project has a goal of $15,000 - and to date has raised $5k.  With funding going on until Sep 24th at 11:56 AM CT.

They have 5 styles to choose from - Hoodie, Sweatshirts, Varsity Jacket, Padded Vest, and wool jacket.  They say delivery will be in Jan 2017.

Pricing for these starts at $179 for the Hoodie and sweatshirt,  it is $189 for the Padded Vest,  $199 for the Varsity Jacket and $229 for the Wool Jacket.

Then there are add ons -  $69 for the charging battery Pack,  $59 for the LED Pack and $59 for the H Key Chain and $59 for the H Ring,  $49 for the Selfie Tripod, and $39 for the magnetic Charging cable,  and there are other accessories.

Any way Winter is coming and if you are looking for a multifunction winter coat that has a batter pack, LED pack and more - search for H A L L A M at kickstarter dot com or the show note for ep 402.

Honestly - This has to be one of the most confusing projects I have ever seen when it comes to ordering. I think it would be easier for me to explain where White walkers came from then it would be to explain how to order one of their jackets.

    https://www.hypershop.com/products/hyperlink-316l-stainless-

    steel-band-for-apple-watch-classic

One of my favorite Kickstarter funding was the Hyperlink stainless steel band for my Apple Watch - it looks like the $300 version from Apple - but was only $50 for kick starters - and they were selling it for $70 retail - I say that in the past tense - because right now - they lowered the price to $30.

If you have an apple watch and you are using that rubber band that came with it - you know the ugly blue one or white or one of the other colors.  It is time you moved up to this band.

At the current price I am tempted to buy an extra one just to have around.

There is a link to this in the Show notes - they have versions for 38 mm and 42 mm Apple Watch and Apple Watch Sport.  And they have the stainless steel version and black version as well.

Link in the show notes - not sure how long this sale will last.

    Rob,

Love the show as per usual.

     A few comments.

I guess I am the "one" who bought the Apple smart battery case for my

iPhone 6s. What can I say, I love it. I always had a case for whatever

iPhone I have as I dislike how slick the phone is naked. The battery case

does what it is supposed to do, gives me insane battery life and does it

without making me constantly cycle the internal battery of the phone plus I

can use a lightning cable to charge the  whole thing. I truly loath micro

USB for constant plugging and unplugging.

As for the headphone jack, or lack of it, I am blind and thus use

Voiceover. This means, of course, I am always listening to the phone. I am

not at all happy about what appears to be the impending demise of the

headphone jack but it's not as big a deal as all that.  I have tried

Bluetooth. I hate it. Not only does BT still not reliably stay paired up,

there is one more thing to keep  charged and, most  irritating of all; there

is a lag between action on the screen and hearing the result. This is a huge

issue when using Voiceover as you are often touching the screen to perform

actions and the lag drives me insane. If all of that were not enough (and it

truly is) when you use the phone to communicate with someone else using BT

the phone  switches to a protocol that makes a 70's era long distance phone

    call sound great by comparison.

So, going forward, guess I'll need a dongle to plug in my cheap but

durable headphones which I use for things such as podcasts, books and all

the other functions of a modern smartphone. No music, I have a much better

rig for that. I already have a dongle of sorts; I have a headphone extender

which is necessary to fit through the battery case to reach into the

    headphone jack.

    Keep up the great work.

    Regards,

    Kevin Barry

    Hi Rob,

On episode 401 I have asked about a slow search from home screen. Here're some more details.

Most of the time I search for an app on the phone. It seems to be slow more of the time when I am using a cellular connection.

However, I expect the results for matching app names to be fast before the phone uses the network. Maybe Apple didn't implement this "right" -- local result first, then move on to a slower search requiring network.

    money-with-pokemon-go/

Interesting article by Johnny Evans about the cash machine that Pokemon Go is for Apple.

A research group called YouGov - claimed Pokemon Go has been downloaded over 6 Million times and has 5 Million active users and 1 million of them are paying players - and that is just in the UK alone.

But think about that 5/6th of downloaders are active players - that is outstanding and 20% of those active are paying - that is way way about the 2 to 5% number I have seen for other apps.

The more interesting thing is that they estimate 80% of total pokemon go spending is via iOS users.

And globally Players have spent over $250 Million in the game already. Which means about $200 Million in iOS in app purchases and that is a cool $60 Million for apples 30% cut.  Not to shabby.

I'm stumped. Anyone have any idea why this might be happening?

Hi Bob - yes - I had this happen a few time as well - and I never had that happen before iOS 9.3.4 - and it has not happened since I updated to iOS 10 beta 5.  I thought it was something I had done - but  when I read your post - I realized it was not me - it was the iPhone.

    TRANSCRIPT FOR EPISODE 401

Welcome to the show I am your host Rob and this is the Today in iOS podcast -  First up I want to thank AARON for sending in the music you hear in the background. AARON  wrote:

    Hi Rob,

Please find the song "Strange."    This is a track that was originally written using Garage Band on my iPad Pro 9.7  and my Casio Px5s synthesizer, in a hotel room, somewhere on the road, and then later exported to Logic Pro on my MacBook Pro where I captured the live electric bass and timbale performances. I continued to use the iPad during this process via Logic Remote.

Thanks AARON for the music and folks I will put the full song at the end of the episode.    I also want to thank Me for sending in the Artwork for today's show.

I created the artwork by putting the noir filter on with the photo app and added in the text wit the Over App - Which was really easy to do.  More About that photo later in the episode.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote

Michael Li, Investing Blog, 16 January 2011

Well if The Storm 3 gave Rimm an answer to the iPhone and High End Android phones - then the question must have been - what do those devices not need to worry about?

Alex that would be the Storm 3.

This week we have promo codes for The App  - AZZL - A Z Z L

Here is the written review from the dev.

Quote AZZL is a game that pops out of the screen with bright colours and a distinctive art style, but up until now it had only been available on iPhone and iPad.

That is no longer the case though, with the title landing on Apple TV this week. A combination of game and cartoon, AZZL sees you tapping, swiping, moving, and rotating a range of animated puzzle pieces to complete images.

There's a variety of worlds to explore with each one being inhabited by a range of characters - all animated as slickly as the protagonists in your usual Saturday morning cartoon.

    unquote

Well thanks to the devs for their review of their App - AZZL - and for sending in the promo codes to their App to give away.  Folks if you would like a chance for a promo code for this app - please send an email to todayinios at gmail dot com and put  A Z Z L - iOS or A Z Z L TV  in the subject line.   depending on if you want a chance to win the iOS or Apple TV version

    http://appletoolbox.com/2016/08/notifications-

    not-working-ios-9-3-3/

    Hi Rob,

When I opened up the Tii app I got the notification in the first picture here.

Which shows the error message quote An Error occurred with push notification registration unquote.

So I deleted the app, re-downloaded, it and upon launching the new download I got the notification in the second picture which has the same error message.

And I have not received notifications from you. Please advise.

    Regards,

    Dr. John M

Sadly it looks like iOS 9.3.3 - is causing issues with Push Notifications for many apps - and Tii is part of Many Apps. As is the Facebook App, and the What’s App and well many apps.  However our devs have a fix and a new version is coming.

And a couple of users also sent in word that the App showed all episodes saying they were premium - it seems to be just a small number of users with that issue - and running iOS 9.3.3.  If you are seeing the episodes locked down and saying premium only - let me know which version of iOS and which iOS device you have. We also believe we have an fix for that - but in the mean time if you have the issue - let me know there is a fix you can do now to reset that.  Sorry about that issue.  iOS 9.3.3 - and the Tii app - yeah not peanut butter and Chocolate.

    05:53

    http://9to5mac.com/2016/08/04/ios-9-3-4/

Beyond just messing with the Tii App and the Facebook App and other apps - iOS 9.3.3 had some other issues.

And that lead to iOS 9.3.4 - which apple said quote iOS 9.3.4 provides an important security update for your iPhone or iPad and is recommended for all users.

So I updated to iOS 9.3.4 - and the Push notification Error message - Sadly is still there.  As is the issue being reported of the episodes showing as premium.  So any changes to iOS 9.3.4 - did not affect the issues that came about from iOS 9.3.3 - they are still there.

And Our dev teams believes both will be fixed in the next update of the Tii App - which I believe is in and being reviewed.  So hopefully it will be live shortly.

And literally right after I originally typed that - the update appeared.  So here is the solution for anyone with the Tii App - update to version 2.1.20 - which you should see under updates. And I did the update and the Push Notification error is squashed.  Thanks to Michael S - Our lead dev for the quick turn on the fix.

Per what iOS 9.3.4 fixes one of the items is a problem with memory corruption that was discovered by the Pangu Team.  Apple did give credit to the Pangu Team for discovering the Vulnerability.

In the google+ community - when Kenneth Berger asked is anyone updated to 9.3.4 and if there were any issues - there were a bunch of responses and all were positive.

If you have not updates to iOS 9.3.4 - go ahead and release the hounds.

    http://finance.yahoo.com/news/apple-offers-big-cash-

    rewards-233001706.html

One thing I have not been able to find out is if Apple gave a bounty to Pangu for finding the exploit.

    My guess would be No.

Some might say - but Rob - you recently said Apple does not give out bounties for finding security bugs.  And in the past tense that would be correct - But Apple is seeing the error of their ways and now will start paying bounties to those quote researchers unquote that find security bugs.

Apple said those rewards will be up to $200k.

Apple joins pretty much ever other major tech company creating and OS that offers bounties.

However there is a catch - because well this is Apple and there is always a catch.  Initially the program will be limited to about 25 researchers who Apple will invite to help find potential security bugs.

Sorry any thoughts you had of claiming this - yeah - not so much.

According to info supplied by Apple to Reuters at the Black Hat Conference - earlier this month - the most lucrative category - the one that offers up to that $200k reward is for finding bugs in Apples secure boot firmware - for preventing unauthorized programs form launching when an iOS device is powered up.

Apple did say their reason for limiting who can be part of this is because their competitors told them that is the right way to do it.  And Apple believed them - yikes.

Apple did say eventually they would open it up to more people but for now - don’t call us we will call you.

More info on this one I am sure on a future episode.

    http://appadvice.com/post/apple-adds-faster-3d-

    touch-text-deletion-in-ios-10-beta/718800

Last week iOS 10 beta 4 was released - I should point out for Devs it was beta 4 for the public it was beta 3 - but we just talk per the Dev version - and that was the 4 th version of the iOS 10 beta.

One of the new features in the 4th beta - was the addition of a new 3D touch feature - the harder you press down on the delete key the faster it deletes things.

Of course the 4th beta contains the obligatory Bug fixes and improvements as well.

Some other items new in it include:

There is a New Control center splash page.

In Beta 4 Folder animations are sped up vs past betas.

    Apple also redesigned emoji characters.

And the Taptic Engine vibration when manually locking the phone is gone.  So last one was more what is taken away.

    http://www.ubilio.com/topics/ios-10-beta-4-

    is-now-available-to-download/

    10:29

    http://cydianerd.com/ios-10-beta-5-download-released/

With iOS 10 beta 4 released last week a few sites over the weekend were reporting on rumors / leaks that Beta 5 would be released on August 15th.  Said Leaks were the same ones that reported when the Apple event would be - as in it was a calendar and they were guessing - and they guessed wrong - because iOS 10 Beta 5 was released today August 9th.  And I held off on releasing this episode - because my inside sources said - Rob don’t release on Sunday - Wait until Tuesday then you can report on beta 5.  I’ll buy that for a dollar.

So what is new in Beta 5 - well of course the first is the obligatory Bug fixes and improvements.

Initial reports of other changes are a different sound when locking your iPhone, plus louder typing sounds.

There is also a new Music output icon in control center and the stock music app.

One other new feature or bug - is that when you reboot your device you don’t have to re-enter your itunes password when making purchases - you can just use touch ID.  AS IT SHOULD HAVE ALWAYS BEEN.  I said it is either a feature or a bug - as I would not be shocked to see it removed.  But hopefully it is a feature a long long over due feature.

If you have the Smart Battery Case - if you are that person - the new beta should now allow it to work properly with your iPhone 6 or 6S - this according to the release notes.  Previously some devices would crash when running the older beta’s and the Smart Battery Case.

The new Widget panel which you can get to by swiping to the right now displays the date on all devices.

One other great thing about it being beta 5 - is that I am now putting it on my iPhone.  I traditionally have waited for the 5th beta.  So now I will start getting this on all my iOS devices to really see how it works.

To start with I did the full download and then updated from iTunes.

That is one heck of an industry.

If you look at most of that coming in the past few years - on a yearly basis for the last year - that would make the iOS app market place a greater than $15 Billion a year industry.

That is larger than NCAA basketball including march Madness.

It is larger than the Frozen Yogurt industry - No Fro Yo for you.

It is even larger than the Porn Industry regardless of what numbers you read from a low of $1 Billion a year to a very often discredited high of $14 billion a year.

Kudos to Apple and team for creating such a robust global industry.

    15:09

Long time listeners know that in my past life I used to travel a lot for business - I had one of those jobs where I was traveling 4 out of 5 weeks. Doing 175k in the air in my craziest year.

Which is why I was happy to bring on this new advertiser for the show - Away.  They make a great luggage.  They sent me their Carry on bag.  It is great - it has a built in 10,000 MAH battery pack built in.  That will charge an iPhone 6  Five times.

I was traveling with it - and on the very first flight I am going down the isle and a women points to her significant other and says look at that - what a great idea.  She asked me about it - and naturally I said - Go to  away travel dot com / tii and use promo code tii to save $20 off the suitcase.  She looked at me confused. Yes - Yes I did say that to her.

Have you ever gone to your gate and the first thing you did was look for a place to plug in your cell phone.  Peeking around those round columns looking for a power outlet.  No more.  You actually can be charging it as you are walking through the airport and waiting on line and as I mentioned going down the isle.

But beyond the battery pack it is a great bag and meets my requirements - wheels under all 4 corners and swivels 360 - making it easy to get down the isle and smooth flow in the airport. And it is double wheels under each corner.  Something I really like.  It is lightweight and very durable and even has a lifetime warranty - if anything breaks they will fix or replace it for you for LIFE.  Sweet.

And there is a 100 day trial. If it is not for you then just return it for a full refund no questions asked.

It comes with a charging cord and comes in a really nice Laundry bag. And on the inside there is a bag for your shoes as well.   They really looked at all the details in making the best Carry on bag I have ever owned or seen.  Even the shipping box has nice Away Travel artwork on the inside.  Very very apple-ish.

In addition to the carry on they also have mid size and large check in bags.  But only the carry on has the battery pack.

To save $20 go to away travel dot com slash tii and use promo code tii .  Again away travel dot com slash tii and use promo code tii to save $20.

Does anyone know of a quality photo editor app/program for Mac/iPhone that would help me "touch up" images of my home. I am attempting to circumvent having to hire a home photographer to help sell my home. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

And again There were a bunch of replies to this.

Lawrence McFarland and Daniel Evans both recommended Snapseed

    Robert Spivack replied

    quote

Pixelmator - available for iOS and MacOS. Hands down the closet thing to the power of Photoshop at a fraction of the price and much easier to use.

    Latin Kapoor suggest Adobe lightroom.

Ben Neilsen recommend Affinity Photo as the best non-adobe photo editor on the mac.

    All thanks for your replies.

Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts and comments in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Looking for the Gun icon in iOS 10 - well apple replace the lead projectile launching icon with a water launching one.

Yes - Apple replaced the 38 snub nose gun emoji for an emoji of a green water gun.

There are other changes to emoji’s apple made - but the gun one is the only one people really are reporting about.

but honestly if you are going to replace it with a water gun - the green one is so not what I would have chosen - if you want to go retro go with the ugly transparent yellow ones that were so popular in the 70’s.  Or better yet - put in the super soaker.

We are getting closer and close to the Apple event in September - so that means more and more posts titled everything we know about the iphone 7 or something very similar.

Really only thing different from last week - is multiple reports of a blue version of the iPhone 2016

Also it is looking more and more like the headphone jack is going off to live on that same farm in the country that Apple sent the 30 pin dock connector to live at.

People are complaining more and more about the lack of the head phone jack - but the more leaked photos or prototypes that are released - the more it looks like the headphone jack is no more.

Rob, I came across this article and thought you might be interested in it.

     Thanks for all you do!

The Article is titled - Dear Apple - these are our demands for the next iPhone

    1. Do not ditch the iPhone headphone jack.  Again this may be crying over spilled milk.

    2. Give us better battery life.  As said before - Photography and battery life - are two key things apple looks at. Sadly this author is clueless - as they also ask for a detachable battery.  ummm no.

    3. Stop insulting us with comical limits storage options. Most rumors do point to 32 barely enough GB as the new low end.  Personally I would not recommend anything less than 64 bare min GB.  the 128 now we are talking GB is really what I recommend - the 256 I have a new child / puppy GB version is great for those of you that well have a new child or new puppy.

4 - Make it shatter and waterproof.  Agree on the waterproof - but shatter proof - Apple tried and the results were a bankrupt GTAT for their efforts.

    5. Go wireless - not yet.

    6. Make an even better camera - This is one area - clearly apple is trying to make a difference and they do increase specs each time - so no sure why it needs to be in the list.

based on the rumors you are hearing lately - what are the features that you want for the next iPhone that are not being leaked at this point?   Give us a call - 206-666-6364 - 206-moon-dog.  Or shoot us an email.

    bluetooth-chip/#598556911b54

The other rumor de jur - since the last episode had to do with the ear buds. as in wireless apple ear buds coming our way.

According to quote a source with knowledge of the project unquote - which by now you know means - the reporter is just guessing and hoping to be right.  The source claims apple is working on a special bluetooth ultra low power chip for the earbuds.

Said lower power chip comes from tech developed by Passif Semiconductor - as start up Apple purchased in 2013.

However - then the author goes into cover all the bases mode - saying the source said they did not know when it would launch and it is hitting technical issues. And if it does not work 100% it will be scrapped.

Well done sir - you created a perfectly easy list of reasons why your sources info did not pan out.

But if he does get lucky and hit any marks - then he can point to it as validation.

Reality is if the headphone jack is gone - as it seems to be - then apple must release a wireless ear bud set - so do expect to see something in that category in September unless you know they run into issues then all bets are off.

    apple-may-sell-6-million-apple-watch-2-units-in-weeks.html

Jonny Evans at Computer world had an article about how Apple may sell as many as 6 Million new Apple Watch 2nd gen units   quote within the first few weeks of release unquote this based on results from a next worth survey.

According to that survey - half of current apple watch owners say they will upgrade to the next gen device.

and 22% of non-smartwatch owners plan to buy one this year.

And he also pointed out a recent Wristly survey that found an amazing 94% of Existing Apple watch customers are still satisfied with their devices.

One Analists figures put Apple Watch sales to day at around 13.6 million units.

Going back to NextWorth date - 50% means 6.8 Mil Apple Watch 2nd gen sales to just existing Apple Watch owners.

Potential Apple Watch buyers were asked what would make them use their devices more - and the respondents top 5 responses were.

    57% said longer battery life

    No duh.

37% said easier / faster to charge.

Huh?  It really is very easy to charge.  Guess this is per those that are not already an Apple watch owner.

    36% said more stylish design.

Ok - I can see that.

    31% said wi-fi enabled.

Again - this is for those not apple watch owners.

    30% said useful fitness Apps

And same here - not currently apple watch owners.  So really 3 out of the top 5 items - the Apple watch has covered.

Too many understate the Apple watch - but I personally really love mine and wear it all the time - I had someone this past weekend ask me if I really do wear it all the time - I took it off showed him the tan lines were it was and he was like - ohhhh - because it is really clear I do wear it all the time when I took it off.

At least one person listening to this show - has advanced in the selection process - hopefully a few more of you will as well.

    VOICEMAIL - Karl_brooks_answr_family_share_kids

    Hi Rob,

I have some added suggestions for a router to use in a hotel – The Apple AirPort Express may not be the best choice at it is relatively expensive, bulky, and lacking in features.

The one feature that is really necessary for converting a wired hotel Ethernet jack into a wireless network, is the ability to handle the hotel login/authorization page.

Unlike a home network, many hotels or other public networks will display a special login webpage.  Until you login at that page, you can’t actually reach the Internet itself.  At a minimum, the login requires confirming the terms and conditions of public use.  In a hotel and hotspot locations, you may need to login with an account, your room number, or even pay for a “pass” with a credit card.

The Apple AirPort express is not able to handle these special login pages.  I recommend using a “travel router” that among their many features, have explicit support for public hotspot/hotel login pages.

Two good choices are the TP-Link TL-WR702N ($15.28 at Amazon), or the HooToo TripMate Wireless N Portable Travel Router ($49.49 at Amazon).

Both of these have several modes of operation – bridge, router, access point, client mode, etc.

The TP-Link is incredibly small – it will fit easily in the palm of your hand and so can be stashed in your pocket if necessary.

The HooToo is nice because it also has a built-in battery that can be used to re-charge your iPhone.  Since you might be carrying this kind of device all the time but only need to use it occasionally if the hotel/public hot spot does not have Wifi, the extra features are useful.

The HooToo can also work as a mini “network attached storage” – just plug in a USB stick or external USB drive and the files can be shared over the WiFi – great for streaming movies from a large flash drive for kids when on vacation, etc.

I’ve even used them on an airline to “share” the slow and expensive WiFi with my family while only paying for one pass. Works fine for email and basic web, but not much else.

    Robert Spivack

    screen-redefine-privacy-and-protection-for-yo?ref=discovery\

This week for a Kickstarter project I found one called Peek Screen - two words.  It had a goal of $11k and has raised over $14k - so it is funded - and if you want this one you have until Sept 4th at 6:59 AM CT to fund it.

So what is Peek Screen - it is a screen protector for both the screen itself and the content on it.

The most likely way someone is going to get sensitive info off your device is by looking at your screen while you are using it - this screen protector helps by narrowing the field of view in which people can see what is happening on the screen.

Quote Peek Screen - a highly transparent tempered glass protective cover that brings strength, durability, and privacy to your mobile device. unquote

Right now it is just for the iPhone 4, 5, 6 and SE series - or in other words not for the 6+ series.

Pricing is $22 and delivery is set for Jan 2017.

    Their claim for specs are

    1. Privacy

    2. Anti-Scratch

    3. Anti-smudge

    4. real glass

    5. 0.3 mm thin

    6 87% clarity

So if you use your iOS device a lot in public - say on the subway or other public places that are crowded and you still want to watch porn - umm - I mean access sensitive data and not have others see what you have on your screen - you may want to search for Peek Screen - two words at kickstarter dot com

    Hi Rob

thanks for all the great IOS info you provide in your podcast and the free app stuff!!

Can you please ask your listeners if they have found any durable, cheap (non-Apple) iPhone/iPad charging cords?  The kids in my family break the cords frequently - I can't afford to keep buying the expensive Apple versions - which also break or stop working as well. I've been buying cheap cords from websites (mobstub for example) but they stop working within days.  Any advice is appreciated.

    Regards,

    Laura in LA.

The MOS Spring Lightning Cable comes in 1-foot, 3-foot, 6-foot and 10-foot lengths, with prices starting at $19.95.

    Hi Rob,

Something has been bothering me for a while in iOS 9 on iPhone 6. When I use the search from home screen sometimes it works fast, sometimes ok, and most of the time it's excruciatingly slow. I haven't been able to pinpoint the reason for it.

    Any advice?

    Keep making the best podcast!

    Regards,

    Alex from Walnut creek, CA.

    we-dont-wear-suits/

Funny - cute - or predictable story from iDownloadBlog titled -

“We’re Apple. We don’t wear suits. We don’t even own suits.”

Seems some people that are disgruntled network execs are going to the press to complain about Apples hard-nosed negotiation tactics - and unreasonable demands - which probably means Apple is asking for a good deal for consumers.

But the person complaining that for their meeting with Apple Eddy Cue quote arrived 10 minutes late wearing jeans, tennis shoes with no socks and a hawaiian shirt while all the other executives were wearing suits unquote.

Seems a few years ago - AT&T also complained about Apples wardrobe choices - where someone at AT&T suggested that Steve Jobs should wear a suit to meet with AT&T board of directors - he was told - quote we’re apple we don’t wear suits we don’t even own suits unquote.

Reminds me of the first time I went to a meeting with Qualcom in San diego.  I was the one in the suit with others from the company I worked with - we go into the meeting - and the folks from qualcom are all in shorts, sandals and hawaiian shirts or t-shirts.

Needless to say we felt a little uncomfortable.

We dressed more casual for the next meeting. But not that casual.

    Hi Rob,

As we get close to the next iPhone launch, there will be a lot of anal-yst speculation on how many people will, or will not, upgrade and how that affects Apple sales and revenue.

Since you do a good job of following this on the podcast, I wanted to add my opinion about something that is not marketed well by Apple or highlighted by most analysts –

A lot of the attention seems to be on whether the next iphone will have enough “wow” features to cause current iPhone owners to upgrade.  But this overlooks the large majority of iphone owners that have skipped one more generations so the upgrade decision is actually much better.

For example, my wife and I still have iPhone 6 Plus – we skipped upgrading to the Iphone 6S series ( because we bought unlocked full price phones and want to maximize the value by slowing our upgrade cycles).

So upgrading to the next iPhone means we get all the “new” features of the IPhone 6S (better camera, 3d touch, faster touch id) along with whatever else is new in the next iPhone.

For me, having skipped a generation, I have already decided that we will upgrade NO MATTER WHAT, since we have waited two years and want the 6S features alone so everything else beyond that is just a nice bonus.

I have some non-tech friends that still have iPhone 5 and even a few iPhone 4S.  For them, the jump ahead is even greater.

I think Apple, and maybe even you on the podcast, should talk about upgrades listing ALL the features you get when you change from one model to another.

For example, if you upgrade from an iPhone 4S to iPhone 7 (or whatever it is called), you get all these features you’ve missed (long list), PLUS these new features (not yet known).

If you upgrade from an iPhone 5 to iPhone 7 you get all these features (shorter list) Plus these new features (not yet known)

If you upgrade from an iPhone 6 to iPhone 7 you get all these features (still shorter list) plus these new features (not yet known)

You get the idea – when you look at the real-world upgrade choices, even an incremental improvement in the iPhone 6s to the iPhone 7 features is really a huge upgrade for many people that are on older iPhone versions and ready to upgrade.

I’ve been talking mainly hardware, but with iOS 10 I think the cut-off shifts to only supporting iPhone 5 so anyone with iPhone 4s also loses out on all the iOS 10 software changes too.

    Regards,

    Robert Spivack
