    TRANSCRIPT FOR EPISODE 408

Welcome to the show I am your host Rob and this is the Today in iOS podcast -  First up I want to thank DOUG for sending in the music you hear in the background. DOUG  wrote:

    Hi Rob,

I used to write music for music libraries but decided that it was too difficult to try being a full-time musician/composer and a web/mobile developer and raise a family at the same time, so I took a hiatus from music making.

Now that I have a little more time and had a nice creative recharge, I've decided to start writing music again, but with one constraint - it has to be done on a mobile device, phone or tablet. So right now I'm experimenting with lots of apps, primarily on my iPad Air. The music I've sent is titled "Experiment A1,"  because it was just an experiment to learn the app I used, which was Auxy. I wrote and rendered this track on my iPad Air. I did however use Audacity on my MacBook Pro to add the reverse effect at the end of the track.

    Regards,

    doug sparling

Thanks DOUG for the music and folks I will put the full song at the end of the episode.  I also want to thank BRUCE for sending in the Artwork for today's show.  BRUCE wrote the following:

    Hi Rob,

Here is some artwork I created using an image based off of Apple's most recent invite. It was edited and the text was added using the Snapseed app. Thanks for all that you do, and as always keep up the great work!

    Regards,

    Bruce W.

Thanks BRUCE, for sending in this artwork and folks you can see BRUCE'S artwork in the FREE Tii App via the BONUS button for ep 408 - or at instagram.com/todayinios and also as a stand alone post in the VIP section and at Facebook.com/todayinios.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote

“All of a sudden, every teenage girl has an iPhone. The real danger is that Apple becomes so mainstream that there is a breakaway by consumers to something new.” UNQUOTE

    T. Michael Walkley, Analyst, Canaccord Genuity, 26 Feb 2012

So again this is the it is too popular for its own good fear.  And if you are going to be afraid of something be too popular - don’t let it be what is popular with Teenage girls - because what they do very very much influences teenage boys.  And if you doubt the power of teenage girls - realize this - there were 5 Twilight movies made - count them 5.   Just Sayin.

    13031438/apple-ios-10-0-2-released-headphone-bug-fixed

    VOICEMAIL - Preston_WI_7plus_shipping Early.

Right after the last Episode Apple released iOS 10.0.2 - and yes - finally I can say release the hounds.  At least for most people.  If you happen to be traveling - always best to wait until you are home to upgrade and if you need your phone for work - also best to upgrade on the weekend - as early as possible - so you have time to work through any issues.  Also if there are some Apps that you absolutely - positively most use for work or school - and are concerned about them working in iOS 10.x - then go to their page in iTunes and see when they last updated and see if it says the app is iOS 10.x compatible - and if it does not say - then email the dev.  I feel now based on reading reports and listening to feedback - that most issues left are not iOS 10 issues as much as some apps having issues with iOS 10.

Per iOS 10.0.2 - as with any double dot update it is all about squashing bugs man.  The key one that is squashed with 10.0.2 is the issue that caused lightning headphone controls to be disabled after a period of inactivity. If your buttons on your lightening headphones were not responsive for your iPhone 7 or 7+ - 10.0.2 should fix them.  Not something I needed to worry about - because you know - my Phone is still be in China and not in Overland Park.

There are some other bugs fixed in this update.

One is a bug that caused Photos to quit when switch on iCloud Photo Library.  Another fixes a bug that prevented you from enabling some app extensions.

If you happen to be an owner of the Kevo Smart Lock from Kwikset - they had warned not to update to iOS 10 yet because of a bug in iOS 10 that cause the lose of some features of their locks.  Now they say iOS 10.0.2 fixed that bug and their smart lock is smart again.

Again if you were on the less than 50% that has held off updating to iOS 10 - then again it is time to release the hounds and update to 10.0.2 -

    fresh-data-claims/

Yes - you heard me right - over 50% of iOS users are now using iOS 10.x

It took about 16 days for iOS 10.x to cross the 50% installed user base - that was September 26th.  This according to AppLovin.

To put that in perspective - Android's latest version Marshmallow - is at an 18% and change adoption rate.  And it was released on October 5th officially - oh I should point out that was October 5th 2015.  In one year less than 20% adoption rate vs Less than 3 weeks to be well over 50% for iOS.

One new feature of iOS 10 is really not a feature it is a change - and that is you now push the home button to unlock. No longer do you slide to unlock.

And everyone loves change - right.  Well not so much.  There is a petition out there for Apple to bring back slide to unlock - back to the iOS 1 to iOS 9 way of doing things - not this new fangled push the home button to unlock way of doing things in iOS 10.  Folks are saying - hey Apple - you trained us for 9 years to do this slide to unlock thing - it is now built well into muscle memory - how are we supposed to change now.  Bring back slide to unlock seems to be the mantra for at least a vocal minority - if not also a silent majority - What say you - are you set in your slide to unlock ways - or are you able to adjust to this revolutionary new push to unlock method.  Give us a call - 206-666-6364 or email us - today in iOS at gmail dot com.

    http://www.investors.com/news/aetna-will-subsidize-apple-

    watch-in-health-care-win-for-apple/

Interesting story - Aetna will subsidize Apple Watch for select large employers and individual customers.

    Aetna said the following quote

"a new initiative to revolutionize members' consumer health experience by combining the power of iOS apps and the unmatched user experience of Apple products including Apple Watch, iPhone and iPad with Aetna's analytics-based wellness and care management programs."

    unquote

Aetna is also as the phrase goes - eating its own dog food and will provide Apple Watch at no cost for all of its employees - nearly 50,000 strong are they.  Aetna said their employees will receive a free Apple watch is they quote participate in the company's wellness reimbursement program, to encourage them to live more productive, healthy lives.” unquote.

What is not spelled out - is how much of that movement and health data collected from your Apple watch will be sent to Aetna - I would have to imagine - if you agree to getting an Apple watch - you are also agreeing to share your health data collected on the Apple Watch.  It does appear Aetna has some big app releases scheduled for 2017 for iOS users.  More on this in the future.

In the UK - insurer Vitality also this past week announce they will be subsidizing Apple Watches for those that that take part in wellness efforts over two years.

Obviously if you are more active and lead a healthier lifestyle - it will mean you will cost Aetna and other insurers less money to insure you long term.

We are happy to have Away sponsoring us again.

They make great luggage.  They sent me their Carry on bag which I am loving.  It is great - it has a 10,000 MAH battery pack built in.  That will charge an iPhone 6 or 7  Five times. Waiting on a flight last week at LAX - all these people were Standing around this Power Kiosk - charging their phones - I on the other hand was sitting comfortably at a seat while my Phone charged from my Away Suitcase.

Even better is you actually can be charging it as you are walking through the airport and waiting on line or even in the restroom.

But beyond the battery pack it is a great bag and meets my requirements -   wheels under all 4 corners and swivels 360 - making it easy to get down the isle and smooth flow in the airport. And it is double wheels under each corner.  Something I really like.  It is lightweight and very durable and even has a lifetime warranty - if anything breaks they will fix or replace it for you for LIFE.

And there is a 100 day trial. If it is not for you then just return it for a full refund no questions asked. I love when a company stands behind their product like that.

The Away bag comes with a charging cord and comes in a really nice Laundry bag. And on the inside there is a bag for your shoes as well.   They really looked at all the details in making the best Carry on bag I have ever owned or seen.  Even the shipping box has nice Away Travel artwork on the inside.  Very very apple-ish.

In addition to the carry on they also have mid size and large check in bags.  But only the carry on has the battery pack.

    Hi Rob,

Because of the headphone jack removal I decided before buying the iPhone 7 to try a set of Bluetooth headphones as I use plugged in headphones currently for at least 3 hours a day.

I found even the cheap ones I bought to be sufficiently good sound quality wise and they allowed me to answer calls and change volume etc with ease.

My concern was at the end of the day my battery level had plummeted compared to my normal daily use.

I have always had Bluetooth enabled as I use a Bluetooth speaker when at home occasionally and have never had a battery issue with the Bluetooth functionality left on.

So it looks to me that by Bluetooth being actually used drains the battery much faster than simply having Bluetooth enabled, which makes sense as it's doing much more.

But I had no idea it was such a marked jump upwards for battery drain.

That is a real deal breaker right now for me to make the jump to a non-headphone jack phone.

Might it be because I was using a VERY cheap set, or is that normal?

Love your work, thanks for your time

    Hey Rob,

On  episode 406, when I heard Justin from Pennsylvanias message about the preorder and the apple store app my reaction was “so it wasnt just me!”. However mine wasnt with the payment, it was the shipping address. I had moved out of my parents house this January but hadn’t ordered anything from Apple since then so I knew I had to change the shipping address. I go and do it ahead of time just like Justin did with his and when I went to complete my order, not only would they not let me change the shipping address beforehand, but it was my old one! And it did waste some precious time. And to add to that, Apple wouldnt let me change it afterwards when I chatted with them. Thankfully my parents house is right up the street and this shouldn’t be a problem. But the fact is it couldve been. So I definitely feel Justins pain! Something must’ve been wrong with the app... Good timing Apple. Anyway love the show Rob!

    Hi Rob,

One of the IOS 10 enhancements I looked forward to, was the maps program automatically "remembering" where I parked. I was more than a bit disappointed when I realized that I had to have Apple Car or a Bluetooth enabled car to use this feature.

I do not want to buy a new Apple car stereo as I am quite happy with my current system. I tried buying a Bluetooth accessory for my car that plugged into my sound system' auxiliary port. That didn't work - apparently it worked as headphones and didn't the required ID.

Do you, or any of your listeners, know of a way around this requirement. If there is no workaround, does anyone know of an inexpensive way of adding Bluetooth to my car.

I enjoy listening to your show! Keep up the good work.

    Smitty

Hi Rob – See email thread below. Like you, I am still awaiting arrival of my iPhone 7+. I ordered the Utomic edges based on your recommendation on Episode 406. You stated they told you that the edges designed for the 6+ would also be compatible with the 7+. After I placed my order, I received an email from Utomic advertising the soon to be arrival of the edges for the 7+. When I questioned their representation to you, they advised me to return the edges designed for the 6+ and wait until the 7+ models were available. - Todd

Hi Andy and Todd - thanks for the feedback - I reached out to Utomic about this and they said

    quote

    Hello Rob,

We are sorry to hear that one of your listeners had issues with fit with their iPhone 6 Plus Edges on their iPhone 7 Plus.

That should not be the case.  Our Edge protectors for the iPhone 6 Plus will fit on the iPhone 7 Plus.  That being said, we are not satisfied with the amount of lift the iPhone 6 Plus Edge protectors provide the i7 Plus for the camera, so we are redesigning the Edge protectors.  The new design will be thicker to provide more protection.  So, if you want super slim, stick with the current design, but if you want a bit more protection, the new design is your choice.

If your listeners have any issues, they can contact us for help with replacements or advice - support@utomic.com.

    Your friendly Utomic support staff

Hey Rob, Here's an indigogo campaign for a 7/7+ case with a built-in audio jack, but unlike the last one I sent you this one also protects the phone and doubles your battery life (2,400 mAh (iPhone 7), or 3,600 mAh (iPhone 7 Plus)). Just went up today and already raised 34%... https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/fuze-cases-bringing-back-the-audio-jack-iphone-headphones#/ Aric Boyles

Thanks also to AP and others that sent in the link to this one.

It is called the FUZE cast - spelled F U Z E - and there is one for the 7 and one for the 7+ and this battery case - also offers screen protection and a lightening port and most importantly to those that like 1/8th inch headphone ports - one of those.  No dongle for you. And no micro usb port - just the standard lightning port - which is really nice.  And it also means you can charge both the iPhone and the case at the same time.

The battery size for the 7 is 2,400 man and the 7+ is 3,600 maH - which means more than double the battery life for both devices.

They had a goal of 50K - when the email from Aric came in they were 34% of the way there - now they are over the 50k mark.  you have until around the end of October to fund this one.

Pricing for a single case - 7 or 7+ costs $69.  You can get two cases for $109.  Or 4 cases for $249.

If you are interested in this and just can’t let go over your 1/8 inch plug - search for FUZE - F U Z E - at indie gogo dot com or in the show notes for ep 408

Apple put out a press release this past week titled -

quote Apple & Deloitte Team Up to Accelerate Business Transformation on iPhone & iPad  unquote.

From the PR Apple said quote

As part of the joint effort, Deloitte is creating a first-of-its-kind Apple practice with over 5,000 strategic advisors who are solely focused on helping businesses change the way they work across their entire enterprise, from customer-facing functions such as retail, field services and recruiting, to R&D, inventory management and back-office systems.

Apple and Deloitte will also collaborate on the development of a new service offering from Deloitte Consulting called EnterpriseNext, designed to help clients fully take advantage of the iOS ecosystem of hardware, software and services in the workplace. The new offering will help customers discover the highest impact possibilities within their industries and quickly develop custom solutions through rapid prototyping.

We know this is important to Apple because they have a quote from Tim Cook - and most PR’s do not have that.

    Hi Rob,

I am a blind user of the I phone six. I am using iOS 10. The only issue that I am having is using messages with invisible ink with voice over. I am not sure how to review a message that is sent in invisible ink. If someone could please let me know how to do this. I would greatly appreciate this, and I love this app. It is very informative, considering that I want to go into a field where I would be working with technology and tech-support for Apple.

    Hi Rob,

I am learning to deal with the missing headphone jack and trying out some bluetooth ear buds, but what I didn’t expect was the hassle that my new iPhone ear buds won’t work on  my MacBook Air. I did not realize how often I went back and forth from one to the other when I take a skype call or something. I am finding that instead of carrying one set of ear buds I am now carrying 3. lightening ear buds, blue tooth ear buds and my old ear buds to use with the Mac :-(

I am hoping Apple’s new bluetooth ear buds will make this all work better

    Hi Rob,

I know that you are an iBooks author and you helped to share the work of other authors in your promo giveaway segment. I also know that you are committed to accessibility, andI thus make the following request of you and your listeners:

Would it be possible to create a small campaign to make iBooks Author more accessible on the Mac with voiceover? Maybe we can all email the apple accessibility team or find some other way to make this possible. There are still many problems with the app and it is difficult to use at best. This app has been out for much too long and I feel that us visually impaired folk need to have access to all the features possible in this piece of software. I noticed that this app does not really meet quality standards for accessibility from apple and hope that with your help and that of the listeners, we can make a change.

The email address to send your thoughts / request for Accessibility with the iBooks Author tools is accessibility@apple.com

Thank you Rob and I love your show..

    TRANSCRIPT FOR EPISODE 407

Welcome to the show I am your host Rob and this is the Today in iOS podcast -  First up I want to thank AARON for sending in the music you hear in the background. AARON  wrote:

    Hey Rob,

This song called "Be Released"  is about life and love in the modern world. The track was originally written using Garage Band on my iPad Pro 9.7  and my Casio Px5s synthesizer.  It was then later exported to Logic Pro on my MacBook Pro and mastered using  a very cool software package called Lurssen Mastering, (pronounced Ler-sen)  from IKMultimedia which is available for both IOS, and Mac OS. I continued to use the iPad during this process via Logic Remote.

I can be found online on my official site: http:www.aarontoddmusic.com, on Twitter: @aarontodd, my blog about music: https://aarontoddonline.wordpress.com and on Reverb Nation At: https://www.reverbnation.com/aaront

Thank you for all you do to share useful information about IOS products, you rock brother!  Hope you will get a chance to say hey, the next time you are in L.A.

    In soul and song,

    Regards,

    Aaron Todd

    Hi Rob,

Here is some artwork I created using an image based off of Apple's most recent invite. It was edited and the text was added using the Snapseed app. Thanks for all that you do, and as always keep up the great work!

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote

“Imagine Samsung introducing revolutionary new lines of mobile phones and tablet computers with twice the battery life of Apple devices! Imagine colors more vivid than you have ever seen in any display before and half the thickness of Apple devices! The foregoing is not just a hyperbole; Samsung is pouring billions into making this happen. unquote

Wow - Really Think with Twice the battery life of Apple devices - that sounds hot.  And just like the type of Phone the Talking Heads could get into you know if they were speaking in tongues. Well Nigam all I can say is Watch out you might get what you’re after.  Just Sayin.

    10-1-beta-to-developers/

Well Developers - Apple has released iOS 10.1 beta 1 for testing on Sep 21st - nice way to end the summer.

The big add with 10.1 beyond bug fixes and optimization upgrades - is The new Portrait bokeh feature - that is where it focuses on the person you are taking a picture of and blurs the background.

This is just for iPhone 7Plus owners - so I should say it is the biggest part of the update as long as your iPhone 7 plus has been delivered to you and is not still showing 2 to 3 weeks for delivery like oh I don’t know - MINE.

And there is is also a fix for motion handling in 10.1 beta 1.

It is rumored 10.1 beta 1 will be available for non-devs by the end of the week.

Betas for Xcode 8.1, Watch OS 3.1 and tv OS 10.0.1 were also released to devs on the 21st.

    VOICEMAIL - Rob_usdin_feedbk_what_happened_update_iOS10

Rob - Thanks for that explanation on what happened - and yes if you like living on the edge and are careful enough to back up fully before trying a new update - go for it.  Well unless you are on T-Mobile.

Again - each year there are a few things that go on with the new updates. - And this year the 2nd item and bigger item is well T-Mobile USA is saying essentially - Boom babies strange but not a stranger - which means - do not update to iOS 10 at this time.

Seems if you have an iPhone 6, 6 plus and SE  - it is telling customers not to install iOS 10 - as there are or were connection issues.

Since this issue was announced late last week - Apple has rolled out a fix - so if you did update to iOS 10 - there is an update to the update.  And if you are just updating now - you should be ok.

Again - if you are conservative and really want all your apps to work all the time - you still may want to wait until one or two more updates roll out.

But if you like living on the edge and are ok fixing things or dealing with some small issues - then go ahead and update to iOS 10.0.1

Just make sure to back up fully before doing so.

And make sure to update all your apps before hand as well.

Then force quit all open apps - and do a network settings reset - then reconnect to wifi and then do your update from iOS 9.x to iOS 10.0.1

    Good luck.

    Into the email bag.

    Hi Rob

Having updated to iOS almost immediately (yes, I'm one of those people), I have to say overall I am very happy with it.

Stuck in traffic last night, I decided to see how Siri had improved. All I can say is thank you Apple. I often use Siri to change music when I am driving and in the past this could be a very frustrating exercise (the phone nearly getting chucked out the car window a few times). But now, none of that.  Not once last night did it get a request wrong.

My only gripe is with the Music app interface - it looks like a cheap Word Press site.

    Regards,

    Mark

    https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPhone+7+

    Plus+Teardown/67384

After each new iOS device hits the market - there is one post I and many others really look forward to - and it is the tear down post from iFixit.

And yes - they have their iPhone 7 plus teardown available and it well is not really surprising - Repairability wise the 7Plus gets a score of 7 out of 10 - which is the same as the 6S plus and 6 Plus.

Final Thoughts to start from iFixit.

On the positive - The battery is straight forward to access and replace.  And the Solid state home button eliminates a common point of failure.

The addition of making it more water resistant means it is more difficult to open up.  Which means getting to the battery and screen to replace them is more difficult - but once you get it open it is easier to replace them.

And Apple added tri-point screws for no apparent reason other than to make manufacturers of try-point screw drivers really happy as it is one more screw driver you need to purchase to repair and iphone.

The Battery - which some bogus teardowns claimed was much smaller than the 6S plus - ended up being bigger then the 6S plus and on par to the battery of the 6Plus.  Coming n at 2900 mAh vs 2750 mAh for the 6S Plus and 2915 mAh for the 6 Plus. Of course with iOS devices - Battery size is not a direct correlation to battery life - as there are new optimizations with the updated chips.  Still nice to see a good size battery in there again.

Looking at the Logic board is physically confirmed there are 3GB of Ram in the iPhone 7Plus vs 2GB for the iPhone 7.

Again really nothing shocking or even unexpected discovered.

    Into the email bag.

    Hi Rob,

It hadn't occurred to me until yesterday why I might miss the headphone jack.  When driving, I typically use google maps on my iPhone, but I plug in the iPhone to keep the battery charged. I also listen to podcasts (like Tii) while I'm driving but to keep to myself I use a wired headphone.  I wonder if there will be a way to charge and listen at the same time, maybe a jumper of some sort.  Or I guess I just get a pair of wireless headphones (and keep them charged...).

    Love the show,

    Regards,

    Mike

    VOICEMAIL - Scott_TX_redo_part2_headphone_jack

    Hi, Rob,

Something I haven't heard mentioned concerning the absence of the headphone jack in the iPhone 7 is the awkwardness of using wired headphones while carrying the iPhone in a belt case. Every case I've seen allows the headphone cable to escape through the case corner with the "old" iPhone configuration. The iPhone 7, with its adapter dongle which sprouts from the Lightning connector in the center of the body, doesn't work with belt cases.

    Regards,

    Larry

    7-jet-black-sold-out/index.html

Early on a lot of the articles about sales this launch talked about higher than expected demand - then the pendulum swung the other way and said there was actually less than needed inventory.  And any shortages are inventory related and not demand related.

The iPhone 7Plus - Jet Black sold out to November at least on that first night.  Other 7 Pluses are hard to get as well right now.

But it is the Jet black that clearly has had the highest demand or major inventory shortage depending on who is telling the tale.

    Hi Rob,

here are a few of my initial thoughts after receiving my black 7 Plus. I love the new home button. I had problems with it on my iPhone 5 and 6, where after a while it stopped working properly. On my 6S I actually turned on the accessibility on screen home button to not wear out the physical one. Depending on the surface my phone is laying on, the haptic button to me at least feels like an actual button. Totally fools my brain. The sound quality is so much improved by the addition of the second speaker. I use text to speech to communicate, so the improved sound quality and loudness is great. I look forward to using the new camera system. Anyways, I am totally pleased with my new phone.

    Regards,

    Darrin

    http://qz.com/784332/iphone-7-jet-black-scratches-apple-aapl/

One thing reported early on is the Shinny Jet Black version is a scratch magnet.  There is a video on youtube showing someone scratching it.

Hint - If you take out a sheet metal screw and rub it vigorously on your iPhone - ummm - yeah it will scratch your iPhone - duhhhh.

It did also scratch - with keys and a penny and of course with a razor blade.

So you know - you might just want to keep change, Razorblades, Sheet Metal screws and your car keys out of the pocket you have your Jet Black iPhone in.

    Hi Rob,

Per the iPhone 7 - I'm not sure, may be my imagination but seems like a little better sound from the 7 on Bluetooth and lightning port adapter.

FYI as I've said some podcasts are not loud enough on Bluetooth.

I've found a Bluetooth to headphone jack adapter that's pretty loud.

I've got to figure out which one I ordered and get more. Both of this type require USB power so no charging necessary.

$2 amazon from china. I'll probably try to get $10 or $20 worth to have on hand for extras or someone that needs one. Great for your aux jack.

    Hi Rob,

Just got my iphone 7 256gb (up from a 16gb 6!!) love it so far and as per the article here i think the display is fantastic!

Looking forward to putting the camera through its paces but again, very impressed so far.

No sign of the hissing i keep reading about either.

I went for black by the way and to be honest its gone straight into a case so who cares!

Sent my old 6 back to EE and they have offered me £200 ($260) which I'm pretty happy about too.

Great show Rob, been listening for more years than i care to mention!

    All the best

Thanks simon for the email and the heads up on this article from Fortune that says the iPhone 7’s display is just about perfect - this based on testing from Displaymate.  They said quote

“It is the most color accurate display that we have ever measured, It is visually indistinguishable from perfect, and is very likely considerably better than any mobile display, monitor, TV or UHD TV that you have.”

    unquote

Display mate has been testing smartphone displays for years - we have mentioned them before and they found that the iPhone 7 display has the top performance across the board for all their tests.

Their biggest question mark about the iPhone 7 screen is why Apple was not jumping up and down at the keynote event touting how great it is.

    Hi Rob,

Got the new 7 today in mail

    Updated to iOS 10.0.01

I'm waiting a few days or week to activate celluar as its my primary phone.

Coming from a 4s this is wonderful.

    Especially the display zoom.

The home button is very cool. There is a indention that looks like a button.

You program from three choices the feel. It's like how the vibration works. It actually feels like it clicks.  This is way cool. Really tricked out.

If you know 10.0.1 is ready for prime time reply with the word.

Bigger screen is going to be great in the truck. Hope battery will last me all day using the headphone adapter.

    Need to download your app.

    Going from 6.3 to 10.0 and 16g to 254

Some bench mark tests are starting to come in.  GSM arena ran the iPhone 7 through the AnTuTu testing.  And the results - the best they ever tested.  About 25% better than the OnePlus 3

One thing we will see through out the next year - is that the only phone that beats the iPhone 7 in these tests will be the iPhone 7Plus.

    Hi Rob,

Thought you might like this opening line to an article about Android Phones:

Quote Despite a product recall due to exploding batteries, the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is still considered to be the best Android on the market. unquote

Made me laugh.  Great podcast by the way.

    http://www.imangoss.net/2016/09/iphone-7-beats-

    samsung-galaxy-note-7-in-speed-test.html

Well John - Thanks for that funny little quote - Kinda like besides the food poisoning it was the best Burrito I ever had.

Well so now that we know the Note 7 is the best Android fun - despite the whole exploding battery problem.  How does it do in a real world speed test vs the iPhone 7.  Hint - The Note 7 lost on this head to head speed test vs the iPhone 6S.  Which smoked the Note 7.  Well the iPhone 7 did more then Smoke the Note 7 - it dare I say incinerated it.

This is a test where they get the same apps on both devices and then launch each app and in some of them do a task - then move to the next app and so on - basically moving from app to app.  Then they go back and relaunch all the apps again.  This shows also how the devices work in holding the apps in stasis between uses.

In short it worked out like this.  The iPhone 7 was finished with everything before the Note 7 even completed the first lap and the iPhone 7 was done a lot sooner.  Over all it took the iPhone 7  - one minute 40 seconds vs the note 7’s the minutes 14 seconds.  So essentially half the time of the note 7.  Imagine what would happen on this test with the 7Plus - which has more ram.

    VOICEMAIL - JUSTIN_PA_answr_send_receive

    Hi Rob

I've been listening a long time.  Love your show. I have always been an S model upgrader.  I had decided not to make the jump to the 7.  I work outdoors and to be honest the louder speakers and water resistance and better battery are very tempting.  But I couldn't justify the jump from my 6S.  I also have the original iPad mini, which is almost unusable so I was considering upgrading that.  Now I see ATT deal to send in my iPhone 6s and receive monthly credit for a total of $650.  This makes the 7 only cost me $100 in the end and I would be eligible to upgrade again to whatever next year brings.  I am on the grandfathered unlimited data plan so I have no plans of switching carriers.  What would you advise?  7 for a $100 or just wait it out?

    Regards,

    Dan

Dan - why not kill two birds with one upgrade - go to the 7 plus - and that gets you in-between the 6S and iPad mini size wise.  People forget there are extra features with iOS with the plus versions when you go landscape.  so go with the 7 plus for $200 if you can.

    VOICEMAIL - Laura_TX_iPhone7plus_battery_settings

    1. Anytime you want to see what is draining your battery - first make sure you have your device running without power until it is down to 20% - at that point go to Settings - Battery - and scroll down and look for the last 24 hours and see what chewed up the most of your battery life.   Make sure it is all apps you expected to see.

    2. Make sure handoff is turned off - unless you are actually using that feature.  Go to Settings —> General —> Handoff - and toggle off.

    3. Goto Settings - iTunes & App Stores and turn off automatic downloads for all items.

    4. Turn on Time Zone Override - this is one many people forget about - Go to Settings - Calendar - Time Zone Override - and toggle on.  And select your time zone.  If you do not have it on - then events will display according to the time of your current location and looking for your location over and over drains the battery.

    5. Speaking of Locations - go to Settings - Privacy - location services - and turn off location services to all games - and set to while using for any you think need it - and turn fieldtester from always to never.

6 Also under Privacy - go to Diagnostic & usage and set to don’t send.

7 Turn off Airdrop - unless you plan on using it now or in the next few minutes - the rest of the time keep it off.  Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and toggle it off there.

8 Check your brightness setting - and try turning it down some and see if you are ok with the screen a little dimmer.

That are just 8 quick tips for getting improved battery life.  If you look in the Tii App - under PDF’s there is the list of battery improvements for iOS 8 - many still important.  And yes I need to update that doc. That doc had 19 tips for battery improvement.

And there were other no spam with Gmail messages. Long of the short - if you are using Hotmail or Yahoo Mail and getting spam - lots of it - check out gmail.  I have used it for the show for over 9 years - and for podcast411 for 12 years - and it is something a podcaster needs for their show.

    unquote

Well yes - kinda - except the plug is much cheaper, much smaller, and much much much lighter. The lightest version of the GoalZero is 12 lbs - vs 2 lbs 3 oz for the plug.  And the one that is comparable spec wise - which Plus has mentioned on their indie gogo page weighs in at 29 lbs.  ouch - I mean literally ouch.

If you want to learn more about the plug - go back to ep 406 around the 44 Minute mark for more info. It is a pretty cool indiegogo project for anyone looking for truly portable back up power for all their devices including their laptops.

    Hi Rob,

I have recently found “Today in iOS” and it is very informative. I have just upgraded my iPhone 5s to 10.0.1 with no issues,

however I have identified that the Podcast app cannot be added to the Widgets screen. I view and listen to several podcasts and if they were able to be added to this screen it would be great.

Is there any way this can be resolved, if not can you please check with your listeners and see if this would be good for them. Which is the best way to contact Apple developers so I could suggest this to them.

    Regards,

    John

    Hi Rob,

As always, the latest episode concerning the September seventh roll-out was great.

Apple prides itself on producing beautiful and excellent products.

They continue to improve the camera but it is still true that the phone is woefully poor at two things.

Most cell phones have terrible audio.Facetime Audio helps a little, but the difficulty in understanding people's phone calls particularly when calling from a car is a significant.

Apple's audio quality is no worse than that of other cell phones, but it is no better either.

It may simply be a fact that the nature of cell phone means poor quality audio which may be the reason texting has become more popular than calling.

My other concern may sound silly, but Apple's ear buds which came with all phones prior to the seven, are just awfull.

They are better than airplane buds, but not much.

I wish Apple valued its audio as much as it valued the video.

I like better speakers on the new phones but will not be upgrading because I want my head phone jack to work without some kind of adapter which I will probably lose.

Wired always trumps bluetooth for quality mentioned above and simplicity.

That is enough grumbling from me.

I hope they bring back the small phones next year when my upgrade cycle comes up.

    Jan Brown.

    Hi Rob,

I've been holding onto my 4s mainly because I like the headphone jack on the top which I feed into my freightliner radio aux jack.

The 7 with the dongle will work for me and be better than the 6 off to the side.

Supposedly belkin is releasing on oct 10 a dongle to 2 female lightening lighting ports blessed by apple which will allow charging while using the headphone adapter, although a little clunky. Price $40.

    Additional apple headphone adapters $9.

Since I keep my phones longer than usual ill be getting the 256g.

Everyone should keep in mind, aftermarket battery packs may not allow use of the dongles.

I'm not sold on the air buds as I find the new ear design does not give much bass, I like the old design better.

I'll finally be able to get the tii app, as I didn't like the new pastel look when ios7 came out so my 4s is on 6.3. And the tii app won't run on 6.3. I'm starting to have other performance issues as well probably related to 6.3.

    Regards,

    Mike R

Hi Rob, your listeners might know of the 'trick' to free up space on your iOS device where you go to iTunes and 'rent' a movie too big for the space you have available. You aren't charged as your phone 'cleans' the cache of various apps looking to create space for the download. Upon doing this I often had another gb or so available.

Well it looks like iOS 10 has killed this, I tried it the other day and was charged for the rental and no cleaning of apps and no freeing up of space.

Hopefully this won't be an issue too much longer as Thankfully any new phone I get will be a 32gb one due to Apple no longer producing the 16gb phone.

For those of us who have their device provided to them by the company they work for, like me many I guess have just been provided with the entry level phone (16gb)

    Thanks Rob

I have mentioned before iPhone cases that also have a bottle opener.  Not exactly the kind of torque you want to put an iPhone through - but this next one says - hey - don’t just kill your liver - you need to kill your lungs to - and they have both a bottle open and a lighter built into the iPhone case.

They say it is an iPhone case with a battery pack, credit card holder, bottle opener and lighter.  It is called the Sparkslide Version 2.  And they haver versions for the iPhone 7 and 7+

So if you want to be able pound down a few while lighting up a few - this is the case for you.  They hit their goal of $80k.  And you have until Oct 10th at 9:11 PM CT to fund this one.

Interestingly they have a version for the samsung Note 7 - but only have the bottle opener built in - guess there was no need to add the lighter part - as that feature is apparently built into the Note 7.

If you want more info search for Sparkslide in the show notes for Ep 407 at today in iOS dot com.

On the last episode I mentioned the Utomic edge bumpers that you can get to at todayinios dot com slash utomic - well they sent an email saying if you use promo code upgrade - upper case - that you will also get a free utomic glass screen protector - that is a nice $30 value - for free when you order your edge bumpers.  Again go to - todayinios dot com slash utomic which is our affiliate link.  And yes I have mine and they are sitting here mocking me as I wait for my iPhone 7+ to arrive - but the first thing I am doing with my new iphone is putting these bumpers on it.

If you have some favorite wired headphones - but are upgrading or just upgraded to the iPhone 7 or 7+ - there is a Bluetooth receiver from Griffin for $20 that will allow you to plug your headphones into it - and then connect to your iPhone 7 or 7+ via bluetooth.

It is call the iTrip Clip and has a range of about 30 feet and a battery that lasts about 6 hours on a single charge.

Search for iTrip Clip in the show notes for ep 407

    Hey Rob,

It seems none of your blue shirt listeners responded to a few of the questions that have been asked in episodes 403-405. I just caught up, so I figured I would be your blue shirt for some of the questions asked.

    1) For the callers reporting issues with getting a passcode change screen coming up frequently for them, this is new for iOS 8. It doesn't have a rhyme or reason, but it does seem to be targeted at people who have set pass codes that do not follow secure rules. When it comes to 6 digit passcode, these are restricted to devices with Touch ID as they are easier to access without the passcode, so having a longer code does not hinder the user. This may also be a reason some people are seeing forced passcode changes to be more secure.

    2) For AppleCare pricing, I think it was said before, but the pricing is actually based off the full destruction of a phone, which doesn't come cheap. While I was working as a Genius in Apple with the new pricing for AppleCare, I started changing how I handled repairs. If a customer with AppleCare came in with a busted screen, I would go over pricing that a screen repair is $129/$149 without AppleCare, but I would also mention that a replacement phone was almost $200-$300, depending on the model. One thing to think of when getting a repair is "How damaging am I to the phone?" If you think you'll continuously break the screen on the phone, it might be better to space out when to get repairs, because a cracked screen is still usable in a sense. Once the phone is destroyed and not usable may be a better time to use AppleCare. Another thing to think is that if you expect to hit water damage at some point, you can opt not to use AppleCare and get the screen repaired. You save your AppleCare and pay about the same cost so that you can continue to have that "Just in case..."

If you have any more questions for a blue shirt, I'll be listening! Thanks for all you do!

    TRANSCRIPT FOR EPISODE 406

Welcome to the show I am your host Rob and this is the Today in iOS podcast -  First up I want to thank RICK for sending in the music you hear in the background. RICK  wrote:

    Hey, Rob, love the show.

Both as an educator and as a scholar whose work has examined the intersection of rhetorical and disability studies, I deeply appreciate the attention you give to issues of accessibility. Your deft handling of complex topics is admirable, characterized, as it is, by informed, respectful commentary that avoids the well-meaning but gratingly insulting condescension that so often plagues the discussions of others. Bravo! I say.

I've included a short musical piece (hopefully not too short) for consideration as a possible episode intro/outro selection. My wife left me and I had the summer off, and so, in my sorrow, I turned to the iPad Pro for solace. I'm not a musician per se, but I do love learning new things.

The piece, called The Struggle of Hope, was composed,  performed, recorded, and mixed entirely on a 12.9-inch iPad Pro using GarageBand, DrumKick, and the wonderfully powerful GeoShred. Additional musical selections, along with an assortment of animated shorts and blog musings focusing on Apple-related topics and mental health can be found at my newly established blog located at www.regardless.website.

Thanks RICK for the music and folks I will put the full song at the end of the episode.  I also want to thank MATHIEU for sending in the Artwork for today's show.  MATHIEU wrote the following:

    Hey Rob,

I made this picture on my iPhone 5S with these apps: Photoshop Mix, Photoshop Fix, and Aviary. I used a Apple special event invite from 2015 for the background and I edited an iPhone 6 to remove the headphone jack and replaced it with speakers! Thanks for the show,

    Regards,

    Mathieu from Canada.

In the Artwork he made the iPhone 6 look just like the iPhone 7 - but here is what is really special about his artwork - He sent it in on February 15th. NAILED IT.  Good Job MATHIEU

AND OF COURSE Thanks for sending in this artwork and folks you can see MATHIEU'S artwork in the FREE Tii App via the BONUS button for ep 406 - or at instagram.com/todayinios and also as a stand alone post in the VIP section and at Facebook.com/todayinios.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote

“The Lumia 900 and its successors will help Microsoft to reclaim the number 2  ranking (replacing iOS) in smartphone operating system market share in 2015.” unquote

Wayne Lam, IHS analyst, 19 Jan 2012

Ummm = not even close.  Depending on which survey you believe in 2015 - iOS’s market share was between 12 and 18% Globally.  With MS coming in around 0.5 to 1.5% Globally. No mater how you look at it - it was not even close.  Of course Apple did account for 91% of the profit for Smartphones - and is that not more important than number of units market share.

For Promo codes - On Ep 405 we offered up chances to win promo codes for The Apps  - Franken Girl and Silk ASMR  -   If you are interested in winning a promo code for one of these apps or want more info go back and listen to the beginning of Ep 405

I usually don’t cover court cases - but this one is interesting - seems - Amazon is suing Samsung in Washington State court - accusing them of Trademark violations.  According to Jeff Bezos from the court transcript.  Quote Samsungs recall notice multiple times mentions fire when describing their smartphone and that is in clear violation of our Trademark for the Amazon Fire,  we ask that Samsung only use words like Explosion, Thermal runaway, or incendiary event when describing their smartphones in their recall notices going forward - heck we would even be ok with them using the word flammable - we are not unreasonable here. unquote

Each major update and even minor ones I say - hold off updating - don’t be the first.  And each time I typically get emails that fall into either the wow this is taking longer to download then I expected bucket or the Smug bucket where people say - Ha I did not listen and all went well.

This year for iOS 10 or really 10.0.1 when it launched I receive a few messages that had a different tone / message.

And they went like this - HELP.

Or this message from Rob Usdin quote

First time I've had trouble with an iOS update. Backed up to iTunes before I left the house.

iPhone SE - went to,work, downloaded update on my phone over wifi. Told it to update. Went to meeting.

Come back, pick up iPhone, turn it on - it shows recovery mode.

Just got home, plunged into iTunes, says it is in recovery mode, says it will update to 9.3.5 to try and fix. And..it is downloading that right now. It was on 9.3.5 before the attempted iOS 10 update.

    unquote

And there were others with that same - oh no - my phone is bricked message.

And I sent out a Push message to the Tii App users about do not upgrade.

It does look like Apple fixed the issue within about an hour of it appearing.  And it seemed to be an issue with those doing an Over the Air update.

But Still I can not stress this enough - just don’t upgrade right away. Stay at iOS 9.3.5 for a bit - wait until iOS 10 Gold Master is really vetted and updated.

Now don’t get me wrong - there were still many of the smug - ha I did not listen and all went well emails - but this time again there were a bunch more messages in the OH crap I am bricked category then we have seen in a long time.

Now to fix the bricked iPhone you need to connect it to iTunes on your computer.  Which I mean - you did go into and sync / back up your iPhone before you tried to upgrade it right????

And Apple did actually issue a statement saying they fixed the issue.

    From Apple quote

We experienced a brief issue wit the software update process, affecting a small number of users during the first hour of availability. The problem was quickly resolved and we apologize to those customers. Anyone who was affected should connect to iTunes to completed the update or contact AppleCare for help - and next time you should listen to Rob at Toady in iOS and not be so eager to update early

    Playgrounds-Now-Available-on-the-App-Store.html

In my mind the absolute best reason to update to iOS 10 - at least from my time playing with the betas - was Swift Playgrounds - and Apple has added it to the App store for free.  Previously it was integrated into the beta releases of iOS 10 and there was no need to download it on its own.  But now again you have to go to the iTunes app store and download the Swift playgrounds app for free.

It does of course require iOS 10 to run - and an iPad.  Sorry - not for iPhones - just iPads - and just those running iOS 10.

From Craig Federighi Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering quote

“Everyone should have the opportunity to learn coding, and we are excited to bring Swift Playgrounds to the next generation of programmers looking for a fun and easy way to explore key coding concepts using real code, More than 100 schools around the world have already committed to adding Swift Playgrounds to their fall curriculum, and we can’t wait to see what students create with it.”

    unquote

Again to me Swift Playgrounds is the best addition from iOS 10.

Yes - I say not to update to the new version of iOS - actually if we stick with last years mantra - I Would say wait until iOS 10.1 before updating - by then at least most if not all of your favorite apps will have been updated.  But I do not expect all or even most to listen to my warning - actually I rely on many not - so that they can send in feedback of their experiences for those that do wait.

Here is some other feedback about the iOS 10 updates from those listeners that well did not listen to me

    Hi Rob,

Got iOS 10 up and running on four iPads and two iPhones, not many problems except all the apps are asking for permissions that they already had for years. And I'm signing in again for most of them.

As for WatchOS 3, there are so many changes, it boggles my mind. Glances are gone. Watch faces work in a different way. The Friends selector is gone. The animated emoji are gone. The exercise apps all work in different and unpredictable ways. But why should I complain when a black and white classic Mickey can now say, "It's eight-oh-three!" with a mere tap on his face. And, I can get confetti with Messages (even though it's impossible to see behind the messages themselves).

Best always for all you do,

    Jeff in Burbank

    Hi Rob,

A couple of things: firstly, the update to iOS 10 didn't resolve my issue whereby callers struggle to hear me when I'm speaking through a Bluetooth headset which appeared from iOS 9.3.5.

Now, I'd like to use iMessage, but without using my Apple ID (i.e. just using the phone number). Can this be done and are there any disadvantages?

    Regards

    Alf, Sheffield UK

    Hi Rob,

iOS 10 loaded on my 4th gen iPad without problem. There was a lengthy delay that I waited out, but it finished just fine.

    regards,

    Tom

Hay rob I updated to iOS 10 on the iPhone 6 at around 11:59am I'm not having any problems at all

    regards,

    Sharde

    Hi Rob,

I installed iOS 10.0.1 on my iPhone 6s from iTunes and everything is well so far, no problems.

    Regards,

    Fabio E

And there were many many more that did not have issues or if they did - fixed the issues and are working fine now with iOS 10.0.1

I will get into some of the new features / changes later in the episode and in future episodes - but will leave with this - if iOS 9.3.5 is working fine for you - and you don’t have an apple watch - are not looking at developing an app - and generally just like it when everything and every app just works - then stay at 9.3.5 for now and wait for a couple of updates to iOS 10 before updating.  But I am not the only one saying this - App devs are saying it to.  Beth LeBas sent me an email from the developer of the Apple Simpl - spelled S I M P L - of course.

    Quote

Apple releases iOS 10 today. As always with major releases of iOS, our advice is "Wait to Update".

We recommend users wait one or two months before downloading the newest version of iOS. Why do we always say this?

    1. Waiting one or two months provides a better all-round user experience for you. iOS 9 is already very stable, whereas iOS 10 is not quite as stable as it is so new.
    2. Waiting one or two months gives time for Apple to squash bugs in iOS 10 (remember: it's a major release)
    3. Waiting one or two months gives Simpl and your other app developers time to optimise their apps for iOS 10

    unquote

Ok - and with that said - later is in this episode and future episodes - we will get into some of the new features of iOS 10 - or you could go back to Eps 396 and 397 - where I did a really detailed run through of what changed and moved around in the settings app.

    http://digg.com/video/steve-jobs-courage

    Hi Rob,

Wow. Even though I knew the headphone jack was to disappear in the iPhone 7 I still

find myself surprised. Surprised by the idiotic way Phil stood there and

justified it. Courage? I think perhaps someone at Apple needs to look that

word up in the dictionary as Phil perverted its meaning. Unless he means the

courage to stand up before millions and sound like an idiot. Of course he's

in marketing so that's par for the course.

Why such hostility on my part? Well, Apple has just removed a port that

many people use and many would still have a use for into the future. It is

not like the floppy drive or the optical disc drive which were clearly

losing their relevance. Plus  those items were not used by many users

constantly. Plus, I strongly suspect that those iPhone owners who never use

the headphone jack barely notice its existence.

So, did we gain something in return? Not that I can discern. The phone is

no thinner and waterproofing is not relevant as a headphone jack is easy to

    waterproof.

Now, what about those of us who use the headphone jack constantly? Apple

throws in an adapter which in itself gives the lie to what they say about

the irrelevance of the jack. However, this adapter does not allow for

charging. So, you can do one or the other but not both simultaneously. So,

Apple moved a useful function from inside the phone to outside where it can

get lost, damaged and you lose the ability to charge the phone.

This is design fetishism run amok. Notice Apple didn't have the courage to

    include wireless charging.

So, will the headphone jack disappear from the iPad line plus the Macs?

After all, the only port the Macbook has besides a single USB port is a 3.5

    mm headphone jack.

Okay, end of rant. For now.

    Keep up the great work.

    Regards,

    Kevin Barry

I mentioned last year about PIDS - Post iPhone delivery syndrome and soon some of you will be suffering from PIDS.  And by Suffering I mean your significant other is letting you know that they need some attention and are feeling a little jealous of your new shinny Apple device.

Folks we have a sponsor that can help defeat PIDS - and that is Boll and Branch.

How does Boll and Branch help you defeat PIDS - by allowing you to buy luxury sheets at an affordable price in a package your significant other will love and feel appreciated when you gift it to them. Like I said a year ago - do something to let them know you still care - and this is that something.

The sheets from Boll and Branch are made from 100% organic cotton - not because organic is a buzzword but because organic cotton is incredibly soft.  And the sheets get softer each time you wash them.  We have had ours for over a year now and they are incredible and really soft. You’ll get the nicest sheets you’ve ever owned for about half the price of what stores and boutiques would be charging for sheets of far lower quality.  I really could not believe how excited my wife was to get these new sheets.  And the box they came in and the individual pouches for the sheets and pillow cases - well the presentation was incredible.

get $50 OFF YOUR FIRST SET OF SHEETS at Boll at Branch dot com, promo code TII.

Again that is Boll and Branch Dot Com.  Promo code TII.

These sheets are only sold online at boll and branch dot com - you can’t buy them in any stores.  That is how they keep the pricing low and free of markups.

But here is the best part - don’t take my word for it - try them out yourself for 30 days risk free.  Boll and Branch is so sure your going to fall in love with their sheets that they give you 30 nights to try them out.  If you don’t love them for ANY reason - they will take them back and refund you without any hassle at all.

They also have towels - and the ones I purchased for my Wife are by far the best towels in the house - plus they have other cotton products.

get $50 OFF YOUR FIRST SET OF SHEETS at Boll at Branch dot com, and use promo code TII.

And each time they have to sit on their reviews until a few days before it hits the stores.  And then I like to look at a bunch and cut to the chase and read the last few sentences or paragraph of the reviews.

But unless you’re eager and ready to live the early adopter life, you won’t actually be missing out on much if you don’t get an iPhone 7. This is an iPhone that lays a marker in tech history, and it will serve as the foundation for many important changes to how phones work and integrate into our lives. If you can get over the all-too-familiar design and the no-headphone-jack thing, then the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are serious contenders for best smartphones, period. Note that I used the word "best," not "most innovative" -- neither of these devices is groundbreaking. We've seen many of these features (or features like them) pop up in rival phones already. That headphone jack thing aside, most of the choices made in the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus feel like safe ones. There's nothing wrong with that, but no matter how good the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are (answer: very, very good), Apple already has us all wondering what next year's iPhone is going to be like.

If you’re perfectly happy with your current device, wait for it to break, preferably on its way to the bottom of a pool — and then get one. With Google’s new Nexus (or Silver Surfer) phones around the corner, wait a month or so to switch. Maybe, uh, hold off on that Samsung for a while.

If you understand things best when they’re phrased as tired idioms: the missing headphone jack is a fly in the iPhone 7’s ointment. Plenty of people will be happy to scoop out the fly and use the rest of the probably-fine ointment. It’s good ointment! There’s just a fly in it. And the transition from wired to wireless is going to be more painful now than it will be a year or two down the line when more accessories and devices have adapted to follow Apple’s lead. Waterproofing and better battery life have been common iPhone feature requests for years, and the camera and speed improvements are nothing to sneeze at, but you’ll need to buy into Apple’s vision of the future if you want to get them.

Per your questions - I would be surprised to see the dongle on the next iPhone.  Most likely these are the only two iPhones that will come with the minijack adapter.

No - no real surprises - as I said on the last show - we had more bingo card boxes hit this time than any other time and by a good margin.

I have an indie gogo project that the developers of contacted me about.

It is called Plug - It is a 48,000 MAh battery Pack - this is a serious serious battery pack - and it even has AC outlets - 2 AC outlets up to 250 Watt Capacity - yes enough to charge two Mac Book Pros.

It has two fast charge USB ports and a USB C port.

As they say you can charge 28 iPhones, 2 laptops and countless other devices.

This just launched and already has $130k raised well over their $30k goal.

Pricing on this is $199 for the early Bird.

Or $349 for the Plug plus a solar Panel - for those that want to live off the grid.

It has Tesla Battery cells - so none of those exploding Samsung battery cells.

The size of this is 8.6 inches by 5.6 inches by 1.6 inches.

If you camp or do lots of road trips - this may be the device you are looking for.

There is about a month left to order this.  But there are only about 650 early bird units left.  And pricing goes up to $209 on September 18th.  and then to $229 on October 1st and then to $329 when it goes to retail.

And this is one I actually am a backer on - if you look through the backers you will see Today in iOS listed.  I don’t back many of the projects I mention on the show - but when I do — umm ok - now it is sounding like a beer commercial - Anyway this one just seemed too good to pass on - when I think of all the times I need to power up.  And now I can do that for any device - USB - USB C - or plain outlet.

Search for Plug at indie gogo dot com or in the show notes for ep 406.

How did you do getting your 7 plus? I gotin at about 12:12 am pst and had to settle for a 2 to 3 week delibery estimate.

    Regards,

    James M

Ummm - well - I made what I would call a bone headed mistake.  My ordering process went like this - starting at 11:55 AM PT - refresh App store app - and refresh apple.com - and repeat and repeat - then at 12:00 AM PT It said I needed to update the App store app - Doooh - should have checked before hand.  Bone head mistake 1.  Finally around 12:12 AM PT - the App store app - came alive - And I went to order my Jet black 256 GB iPhone 7 plus - and when I saw the lead time flash up as 7 to 10 days - I paused and went back to confirm that is what it said. Bone head mistake 2.  where I said to myself - gee - I wonder what the other colors have for lead time is it a 7+ issue or a color issue and then Bonehead mistake 3 - I went and checked and took screen shots.  Then I came back and it said lead times 1 to 2 weeks - and I went back to double check and it said 2 to 3 weeks and I then smacked myself pushed through. So if I had not been an bonehead - I would have had 7 to 10 days - Instead I would up with 2 to 3 weeks and delivery at the home date range of October 4th to 10th.  It was like my mind just went blank for a bit and forgot about the 100’s of thousands also trying to order at that same time.

    Hello Rob,

A quick note on my thoughts regarding the Apple event today.

New bells and whistles with the latest iPhone and watch aside, the thing that most interested and pleased me is that even though Apple didn’t actually drop pricing, they effectively did by doubling storage capacity on the phones maintaining the same pricing structure. I guess you can say they’ve been doing this already by previously dumping the 32GB models on phones and tablets (because whose going to get a 16GB model when you can get a 64GB version for $100.00 more?), but with the bump in storage, prices are much more palatable.

I’m blind and thus still contemplating whether to get the SE (checking the Apple store, the 64GB phone is now at $450.00) since all the fancy visual stuff doesn’t interest me, but even then, scoring a 6S Plus at $650.00 or the 7 at $750.00 with all that storage is also an appealing option. In my case, I’ve got around $180.00 in redeemable BestBuy certificates, so I’ll wait to see if there are any further deals towards the end of the year.

    You have to love saturation…

Airpods…? I’m going to need more than 5 hours of playtime on a charge before I pay $160.00. Sounds like a second or third generation buy or at least until they can boost playtime without a charge.

    Thanks,

    Cris

I want to go over some of the new features / changes of iOS 10 very very quickly - just to remind what they are.  And just some this time - and more each of the following episodes.

    First is Accessibility

    • Magnifier now uses the camera on your iPhone or iPad like a digital magnifying glass for real-life objects
    • New range of display color filters to support different forms of color blindness or other vision challenges
    • VoiceOver adds a Pronunciation Editor to customize the way words are pronounced, additional voices, and support for multiple audio sources
    • Additional text highlighting options in Speak Screen and Speak Selection, as well as the ability to speak keyboard letters and predictive typing suggestions to support multi-modal learning

The very first accessory I ordered for my Jet Black iPhone 7+ even before I ordered the iPhone 7+ itself - were the Atomic Edge bumpers.  These are the ones formerly called Bumpies - that I have on my 6+.  I order the black Edge bumpers.  And Yes I ordered this time - I did not even try to get them free - I did not want to wait - I was hoping at that time I would have the 7+ this week - and not in October.  So when the Edge bumpers come they will be kind of mocking me for a few weeks.

That said - when the iPhone 7+ does come - the first thing I will do is put on the Edge bumpers - I hear the jet black is slippery.  And yes they have bumpers for the 7 as well.

I did send an email to Utomic to confirm the bumpers for the 6+ / 6S+ would work for the 7+ and they did confirm they will.  They also offered me up an affiliate link - so if you go to todayinios dot com slash utomic -  u t o m i c - that will help out the show.

They are $35 for the bumpers - and as I said on the show before - you are paying for what you are not getting - and that is a big bulky case.  I also heard from some 6 and 6S users that they love the camera on the 7+ but don’t want to go the larger 5.5” size and are really torn about what to do.  Well if you are someone with a life proof or other water proof case on your 6 / 6S - you don’t need water proofing anymore - you just need drop protection - and the bumpers provide that and really the size difference between the 7+ with Bumpers vs a 6 / 6S with a big cases is minimal and actually will feel smaller.  Definitely thinner. If you are on the fence about upgrading to the 7+ for the great new camera but the size is holding you back - look at the Utomic Edge bumpers as a way of getting the best of both worlds.  I have a feeling a lot of people will be getting these bumpers.  Plus if you are getting the Jet black - you want people to see it and not cover it up with a case - but given how slippery it is - according to those that touched it at the Apple event - you definitely need some protection.

Again go to today in iOS dot com slash utomic if you plan on getting the bumpers.  Link in show notes of course.

    Hey Rob,

I was the one who first suggested playing music from your listeners during your intro. Thank you so much for entertaining the idea! It's so cool that it's still a part of your show and that it's become part of that cool connection you have with all of us.

I've got another song that I created this in GarageBand on an iPad 2.

Love the show! Thanks for all the wonderful info

    Regards,

    — Daymond

ps. I created 2 versions of the song — one you can talk over in the intro and one that you can play at the end of your podcast that has some vocals I sampled. Hope you like it!

    global-recall-of-galaxy-note-7-replacement-program-announced

First up for this episode - I recorded it in two parts - the first half on Tuesday Night the 6th - and then the second half will be recorded after the September 7th event.  So during the first half - I have no idea what Apple is or is not going to announce.

Well it is official - The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 was the Hottest Smartphone Selling this summer.  That would be around 500 Degrees Celsius and 932 Degrees Fahrenheit to be specific.

Thanks to ALL that sent in emails on this one.  Emails with Subject lines like Merry Christmas or Rob Try Not to Smile - I dare you.  Jeez some of you think I am going to get some sort of Pleasure from reading these article almost like Schad-en-freude - which was actually what one clever person put in the title of an email.  And All I can say - is well you know me too well.

And for those still not clued in on what I am talking about it is Per the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 and that 500 Degrees Celsius I mentioned earlier all the chemistry majors can tell you that is the rough combustion temperature for Lithium Ion.  Seems there were some units going boom goes the dynamite when they were being charged.  This issue is so bad - that Samsung had to recall ALL the Note 7’s it sold in 10 countries including the US - and that is over 2.5 Million units.

Apparently when charging up said Note 7 a small % of the units may catch on fire and basically look like they exploded.  Which by the way is finally a feature Samsung did not rip off from Apple.

Funny thing is if you watch the ads for the Note 7 it shows it working under water - which now turns out is a good thing as it is only safe place to charge one.

So if you are hearing this and you have a Note 7 or know someone that does - make sure they return it ASAP and don’t try to charge it up.  Really - this is a major issue - and one for Samsung that could not possible come at a worse time.  Just as Apple was getting ready to roll out the new iPhones - which we will get to later in this episode.

From an article on CNN money about the recall.

    Quote

it's believed 0.1% of all devices sold are at risk. The company added that 2.5 million Note 7 devices have sold since launch.

    unquote

So that is only 2,500 ticking time bombs that could burn down your house.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission says that consumers should stop using this product immediately.  Then you want to return it to where you purchased it.  And the best thing to do - is upgrade to the iPhone you should have purchased to start with.

    https://developer.apple.com/news/?id=09012016a

On September 1st Apple announced some App Store Improvements.  Well improvements for the end users and those devs that have recently updated apps with short titles.  Like oh I don’t know the - Tii App - a total of 7 characters counting the Space.

See Apple is going to be cracking down on those App devs that are gaming the system by putting really long titles with a bunch of keywords stuffed in the title.  Going forward titled will be limited to no longer than 50 characters.  Which the marketer in me says - Hey Rob - you are leaving 43 characters on the table you could be key word spamming with.

This all goes back to how iTunes search works - and it is about the title - and it has such a strong influence on the results - many App devs tried to spam their titles with almost random keywords.

Marketers love to do this One example of an app I found doing this is one called - Marketing Plan & Strategy COLON SEO, Social Media Marketing & Advertising.  Over 60 characters - and it is the first 25 Characters before the colon which really are the apps title.

Going forward App names for new Apps and any updates need to be 50 characters or shorter.

The other place Apple is cleaning up the App store is in removing Apps that have not been updated in while and are not updated to support the current version of iOS or no longer function as intended.  If you are a dev and your app is deemed to be one of these apps you will be contacted by Apple then will have 30 days to make the needed changes or your app will get the boot from the App store.  If you have one of these apps installed - it will NOT affect your installed app.

Some interesting factoids from the Apple note on this is there are now over 2 Million Apps available - and each week there are 100,000 New or updated apps submitted for review.

As a consumer of many apps - these are both welcome changes - and as an someone with with a 7 character app that gets updated all the time - I like these changes as well.

From the google+ community - Vinny Trent said

    quote

That's great news, but I have to say it's about time. It's one thing to be able to say we have 2 million apps in our store, but if even a small % of those are rubbish or faulty it does't look good for the company responsible for policing the store.

Interesting rumor in Bloomberg - and one not on the bingo card - and that is Apple is supposedly working on a Social sharing App.

PLAY AUDIO CLIP - Ain’t got time for that.

Ok - yes yes yes - I know - Ping - and the failure that was - is probably going through some of your minds.

Apparently this time around it would be an app for Video recording / sharing to go after SnapChat.

Supposedly this app would allow user to record video, apply filters and drawings to the media - similar to what Snapchat does and send it to contacts or to other social networks.

Which ok - that last part lost me - are they creating their own social network - i.e. Ping.  Or are they just creating video creation apps that can take the output and send it via social media.

The rumor according to Bloomberg is this app would be released in 2017.

There are other rumors of other social sharing features / applications in the works at Apple.  But maybe Social Networking is just not something in Apples DNA.  I mean after all - Social Networking means being social and sharing way more info about yourself then you have any right to.  Or as I call those people - front to backers.  Because the basically every share which way they - well you get the picture.  And Apple is soooo exactly the opposite - everything is hush hush - don’t share.  Don’t tell.  It is very very likely the Social Media gene is just missing from Apple’s DNA.   And that is ok - After all no one is every great at everything - well unless you are one of the four people with JB for your initials - but outside of James Bond, Jason Bourne, Jack Bower and of course Johnny Bravo - everyone else is lucky to be really good at just a couple of things.  And I think social networks - well that is something Apple should support but not participate in.

    VOICEMAIL - Justin_PA_3rdParty_fixing_iPhone

Hey Rob! In episode 403, the listener named Tammy was asking for help with her photo upload to Google. Specifically, her problem was that she was running out of space while Google backed up her photos, and she didn't know why that would happen. Well, I have the answer! When you have optimized photos turned on, Google photos has to download the full versions of your photos and videos to your device from iCloud in order to upload them to its servers. That's why her phone keeps running out of space. The iPhone should manage itself by re-optimizing the photos, but it doesn't always work. She might have to manually delete the photos that have already been backed up as she goes to make the process go more smoothly. Alternatively, if she has access to a computer, she might want to try to download her iCloud stuff to the computer, and then upload to Google with the desktop uploader app.

Oh, and don't forget to clear out the "recently deleted" folder to regain that storage space!

    Hi Rob,

A few things I wish were added to ios.

On control center, the bottom row of apps functions like a mini app launcher. I uninstalled calculator and some other stock apps now I have only three icons.  I wish I could choose those apps which appear in control center.  At the very least I wish the wallet app was one of them. I find double clicking on the home button when my phone is locked often unlocks the device instead of bringing up the wallet. The same gesture behaves differently when the phone is unlocked. (I believe this is the only thing that behaves this way in iOS).  With my.phone now unlocked I then scramble to find the wallet buried in a folder.

Secondly I wish there was a way to mark an iMessage as unread. Sometimes I receive a message, will read it, but don't want to reply at that time. Being able to mark it as unread would remind me to respond.

Lastly the stock keyboard should have some sort of swipe option. I would think Apple cops do a very good job implementing a solution.

When you launch the health app and click on mindfulness are you able to launch the "video"? There is a play button but it doesn't do anything. I don't think the mindfullness part of the health app is active at all..

I should say I had emails from others with some different issues with iOS 9.3.5 - like from Alf in Sheffield UK who reported issues since updating to iOS 9.3.5 that people he is trying to talk to via the phone when using bluetooth can not hear him speak.  And others are reporting that issue as well.  If you had this issue and fixed it - please email us today in iOS at gmail dot com and let us know what you did to fix the issue.

So iOS 9.3.5 while needed for security reasons - may have introduced for some a few bugs.  Does that mean you should run out and update to iOS 10 Gold Master on the first day it is released - HECK no.  Even if you are having issues wait a few days.  And if you are not having issues - wait until the at least the first update to iOS 10.  Say iOS 10.0.1 before updating.  Just my warning - next episode I will go over iOS 10 in greater detail and re-emphasize waiting on the update.

Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts and comments in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Thanks to Dr. John for this next one.

And this is for those thinking about getting the smaller or larger capacity storage new iPhone.  Apple last week launched a 2 TB iCloud storage tier for $20 a month.

Really though at $20 a month - that is much more in two years than the difference between the 128GB and 256 GB versions of the iPhone - which likely will be $100.

If you feel 2 TB is much more than you need in the cloud - Apple does also offer 1TB for $10 a month, 200 GB for $3 a month.  and 50 GB for $1 a month.

If the main reason you run out of space is photos and videos - then this might be worth looking into. At $3 a month - that is $72 in two years - for 200GB is more additional storage than the extra 128 GB you get going from 128 to 256 GB - and is $28 cheaper.

That all said - I am sure I will get the 256 GB version.

I will talk more about this later in the episode.

Just know there is now a 2 TB version of iCloud to store all your photos and movies.

    Hi Rob,

I have an iPhone 6.  Out of the blue, my headphones stopped working.  I could hear static when I plugged them into the iPhone, but no sound came through.  Step 1, I checked to see if there was any dirt in the jack – NO.  Step 2, I tried a different pair of headphones – SAME PROBLEM.  Step 3 – Settings\General\Reset\Reset Network Settings – BINGO!  I remember, on one of your shows a long time back, you said resetting the network settings fixes many problems.  Thank you!  Your solution worked for me.  All headphones are now working.

Thanks Janet for that reminder - the all Reset Network Settings trick really does fix a bunch of issues with your iOS devices - even if theoretically it should not.

    Hi Rob,

I Have not heard any complaints in a while about apple maps.

Would I be right in assuming the maps are as good a google in mapping and driving directions? Wonder also about accidents and traffic slow flow info posted to apple maps.

Just curious. I may be getting a new phone soon. I've still got google maps and search but really need more gigs than 16. Using my 4s dinosaur'ed on 6.3. Will be getting a headphone jack however.

    Regards,

    Mike R

Apple Maps keeps getting better with each major update of iOS and even some minor updates.  Is it on par with Google Maps today - probably not - but is it close enough as a native app to no longer make you need Google Maps - for the most people that answer is absolutely.  Sure there are still some small % use cases by location that Apple Maps falls downs vs Google Maps - but vice versa can be said as well.

I personally am all in on Apple Maps and stopped using google maps a while ago.  Apple Maps with integration with my Apple Watch really works the best for me.  I have traveled a bunch this year - next flight actually gets me A-list on Southwest - and I have only used Apple Maps this year and they have worked great for me.

Again the real question is not - if Apple Maps is as good as Google Maps - just is it close enough - and in my opinion and based on feedback from many listeners for 99%+ of users - yes it is close enough - and that is all Native apps need to achieve to be the most used app.

    Hi Rob

I have a question more of a idea but either way maybe you can answer it for me.

Is there an app or a new update coming to the Apple Watch that will flash a notification when my cell phone drops signal.  Down here in Albuquerque you can lose signal very quickly indoors or even driving a few miles down a street before it catches up to the next tower.   There are many times that I have lost signal only to bounce back.   During those times I feel it would have been nice to know if my phone was on NO Service before I pulled it out of my pocket to look.   If the watch can flash notifications from the phone and tells you when the phone is out of range then it should be just as simple as a little icon changing colors bases on whether or not there is a signal.

I tried a couple of free ones like Dash Phone and RemoteBattery that were free.  I  went up to the hiking trails on top of the Sandias knowing where there are places to find and lose reception to test.  Results?  Neither worked.  Both these apps merely told me either who my carrier was or how much battery my phone had or how much battery my Apple Watch had left in it.  Having an app tell me that I have 4g T-mobile on my watch while looking at the no service bar on the iPhone really doesn't help me.

    Love the show - Regards,

    Tom

I have mentioned the RING doorbell - well let me tell you A trued story on how it kept me out of the dog house with the wife.  Two weekends ago - My wife was going out with her mom shopping for the day and she was giving me the list of things I needed to do while she was gone - and one of them was to be at the house at 1:00PM because Tesha the lady that cuts my boys hair was coming over.  Like with most husbands That info went in one ear and right out the other.  A little after Noon - I decided to take my boys to lunch and for ice-cream at culvers.  At 1:00 PM on my phone there was a notice of a ringing of the doorbell.  I answered the door bell from Culvers saw Tesha standing there and was like Oh Crap.  I told her we were 3 minutes out - I grabbed the boys, the rest of our lunch and rushed home.  Tragedy avoided well except we did not get the ice cream and I needed to tip a little better.  And the Wife was never the wiser that I totally forgot what she said. That is the power of being able to answer your doorbell anywhere any time.

If you go to Ring dot com slash T i i - you will get for a limited Time $50 off the Ring of Security kit - which includes a video doorbell, Stick up Cam, solar Panel and indoor chime.

The Video Door bell quickly - and easily connects to your wired door bell wires.  The main unit is not something you have to worry about charging if you wire it up.  It took me all of twenty minutes if that to remove the old door bell and replace it with the Video Doorbell from Ring.

And you can also share access to it with others in your house.

The RING doorbell has quickly become one of those accessories you can’t see yourself living with out ever again.

Beyond the front door - The Stick up Cam can be used to watch other parts of your house and also installs in minutes.

Go to ring dot com slash t i i - to save $50 off either Ring Security Kits.

Thanks Ring for sponsoring this episode.

    http://www.apple.com/apple-events/september-2016/

And now we get into the September 7th 2016 Apple Keynote Event.

It started off as expected with Tim Cook - except it started with Tim as a passenger with James Cordon -

And as they say hilarity ensued or at least Carpool Karaoke ensued.

Apple Music is what Tim started talking about.

Apple Music is now at 17 Million subscribers.  Access to over 30 Million songs.  YADA YADA - YADA YADA

Then on to the App store.

    >140 Billion App downloads.

YoY growth of Apps download of 106% for July and August.

    2X the revenue of Android.

    >500,000 Games in the App store.

And then he introduced finally Mario is coming to the App store and Nintendo - FINALLYYYYYY

Super Mario Run for iOS will be the new app released.

They had Nintendo come on stage and do a demo of Super Mario Run.  No mention of it being available for Apple TV.

Next up Tim went over Education.

He talked about ConnectEd and the 114 schools they are involved with.

Susan Prescott from Apple came out to talk about iWork.  And Real Time Collaboration for Pages, Keynote and Numbers.

Finally Tim gets to the good stuff.  New Products.

And first up is Apple Watch.

Apple Watch is the top selling Smartwatch and in 2015 Apple was the #2 Watch seller - even though they only sold Watches for 8 of the months of the year.    SCREENSHOT.

Jeff Williams from Apple came up to talk about the new Apple Watch.

And yes - Pokemon go is coming to the Apple Watch and shipping before end of year.  Shhhh - don’t tell my son’s.

Finally 35 minutes in we get to the video of the new Apple Watch.  showing people swimming in pools.  Nice.  It is called Apple Watch series 2 - is officially swim proof.  Water Resistant to 50 Meters.  And it is robust enough for swimming every day.

Internally it is S2 - the next gen - dual core processor - 50% faster.  2X graphics performance.  2nd gen display twice as bright as the original Apple Watch.

As expected - Built in GPS.  Another bingo card item.

Actually looks like all three bingo card items for Apple watch are hits.  Apple Watch 2 introduced, Same size, and GPS - but no Cellular are all hits.

They also introduced a ceramic version of the Apple Watch 2 to go with the Aluminum and Stainless Steel versions.

And a new Apple Watch Nike+ designed specifically for Runners - which is the Aluminum version with a special band.  Which is not the type of band I would recommend for runners.  You will want to change that ASAP.

Faster processor, Brighter display, GPS - hmmm - what about battery life?  20 minutes in on the Apple watch and still there was nothing yet about Battery Life.

Pricing for Apple Watch 2 - starts at $369

Apple Watch series 1 - starts at $269 and now has the same 2nd gen core.  September 16th for Apple watch 2 availability.  But NOTHING NADDA - not a single word about Battery Life.

Next up is the iPhone.  Yeah.

As previously mention over 1Billion iPhones sold.

Then there was an iOS 10 overview.  Which I will not overview. He did go over HomeKit - and Yes - Today’s sponsor Ring - works with HomeKit.

And now the iPhone 7 and the first thing they show is is the dual camera module.  And off to a video with Sir Johnny. It is of course very pretty.

    Then Phill the thrill

Yes - same basic design as the 6 / 6S.

    1. Jet Black Finish - high gloss finish.  And second black - just called black.  Gold, Silver and Rose Gold.

Antennas moved up and down as expected.

    2. Home button - redesigned.  Force sensitive. With taptic engine.  So it is no longer a moving button or so it appeared.  Need to confirm that.

    3. The new iPhones are Water and dust Resistant - again as expected.  IP67 protection standard.  which means it is rated to a depth of 1 meter.

    4. Camera - iPhone 7 is actually one camera module.  f/1.8 aperture 6 element lens and bigger lens as expected -  new 12 MP module.  And with New 4 LED flash.  Yes on the bingo card.  Faster processor for Photos.  Optical image stabilization.  Body and face detection vs just face detection before.

iPhone 7+ - yup 2 camera module - Two 12 MP cameras. Shocker.  New button on screen - 1x or tap to 2x - optical zoom.  Or you can do 1x to 10x - beyond 2x it is software zoom.

Having the 2nd lens allows for Optical zoom and better pictures.  This is the key reason I am updating to the iPhone 7+.  This was the feature I have been waiting for - This will give you as close to DSLR as you can get on a smartphone.  Not as good - but close enough for most. In theory - and it will be fun testing it out.

For Video recording on the 7+ you can do 2X optical zoom and up to 6X digital zoom - vs 3x on the 6S+.

For both iPhones there is a new 7 MP FaceTime HD camera up from 5MP.  Which allows for 1080p HD video recording with auto image stabilization.

New feature - portrait - with depth effect.  gives a blur in the background and pops out the portrait of the person in the foreground. that will be via a software update later this year.

    5. Display - 25% brighter display, wide color gamut, cinema standard, 3D touch.  but same exact resolution as the 6S and 6S+.

    6. Speakers - stereo speakers - one top and one bottom.  and twice the volume of previous speakers. good news about the speakers at top and bottom - is that to enjoy stereo audio - you don’t have to put it on the bridge of your nose after all.

    7.  EarPods - As expected - Lightening for headphones - no more 1/8th inch headphone port.  and they are including the lightening to 1/8th headphone jack adapter with the new iPhones.

Phill said the reason they are moving on is courage.  Did I mention Phill is a marketing guy.

    8. Wireless - Apple AirPods - new wireless earPods.  5 hours of listening on a single charge - and the case gives 24 hours of playing. and can switch to Apple Watch from iPhone.  the case is pretty nice.

Connecting is really easy.  Open case - up pops a box - you tap connect and that is it.  No buttons - no pairing.  With a special Apple chip - the W1.  If you remember the kickstarter project a few episodes back - where they had earbuds that charged in the case - same exact thing with the Apple AirPods.  Pricing is $159 and availability is late October - more on these on a future episode.

    Speaking of Wireless.

LTE was improved on both iPhones now supporting up to 450 MBPS vs 300 MBPs on the 6S and 6S+

    9. Apple Pay - fellica - Apple Pay in Japan - and Transit in for Japan.

    10. Performance - A10 fusion chip.  64 bit - four core processor.  40% faster than A9.  2X faster than A8.  Now 120 times faster than the Original iPhone.

Two cores for faster - two cores for higher efficiency.

New GPU - 6 core - 50% faster than A9 and 3 times faster than A8. Now 240x faster on graphics than original iPhone.

Quote A10 most powerful chip ever in a smartphone unquote

Longest battery life ever on an iPhone.

For Battery life.  Apple stated that the 7+ will get up to 1 hour longer battery life than the 6S+ - and the 7 will get up to 2 hours longer battery life than the iPhone 6S.

But looking at the specs for the 7+ to start.

Talk time is now up to 21 hours wireless vs 24 hours wired for the 6S+.

Internet use is where you see the improvement on battery life - that is where the additional time comes from.

But if you are doing audio playback wirelessly - vs wired - then there as would be expected be a degradation.  If you are moving from a 6+ or 6 to the 7+ or 7 - then battery life improvements should be the same.

Physically the 7 and 7+ are identical in dimensions to the 6S and 6S+

Early on I said if they did away with the head phone jack it would NOT be because of thinness - and that is true.  the 7 and 6S are both 7.1 MM thin.  And the 7+ and 6S+ are both 7.3 MM thin.  NO change at all in the dimensions.

The 7 is 5 grams lighter than the 6S and the 7+ is 4 Grams lighter than the 6S+.

    iPhone 7

    Costs - $649, $749 and $849 -

That is the same pricing as the 6S - except it is Double the storage with 32 still not enough GBs, 128 ok - that is more like it GB’s and 256 I have a new puppy GB’s.

    The 7+

Costs $769, $869 and $969 for the same storage levels.

In both the 7 and 7+  the Jet black is only available in 128 and 256 GB.

All storage options are available for Silver, Gold, Rose Gold and plain black.

Pre-Orders start September 9th - Traditionally that means 12:01 AM PT.  So September 9th at 12:01 AM PT as in Friday Morning at 3:01 AM ET.  or 2:01 AM CT in my case.  NOT SATURDAY - but FRIDAY.

iPhones will start shipping on September 16th.  20 countries will get the iPhone on the 16th - then 30 more countries one week later.

Those countries getting it on the 16th are:

    Australia

    Austria

    Belgium

    Canada

    China

    Denmark

    Finland

    France

    Germany

    Hong Kong

    Ireland

    Italy

    Japan

    Luxembourg

    Mexico

    Netherlands

    New Zealand

    Norway

    Portugal

    Puerto Rico

    Singapore

    Spain

    Sweden

    Switzerland

    Taiwan

    UAE

    United Kingdom

    and of course the

    United States

And then on the 23rd of September these additional 30 countries get the iPhones  and they are:

    Andorra

    Bahrain

    Bosnia & Herzegovina

    Bulgaria

    Croatia

    Cyprus

    Czech Republic

    Estonia

    Greece

    Greenland

    Guernsey

    Hungary

    Iceland

    Isle of Man

    Jersey

    Kosovo

    Kuwait

    Latvia

    Liechtenstein

    Lithuania

    Maldives

    Malta

    Monaco

    Poland

    Qatar

    Romania

    Russia

    Saudi Arabia

    Slovakia

    and

    Slovenia

If your country was not named in either group - you likely will still be getting it prior to the end of the year. But 50 countries in the first 8 days is by far the widest fastest roll out ever for new iPhones.

iOS 10 - Sept 13th - I can not stress this enough - WAIT on updating to iOS 10 - don’t be the first ones that update to iOS 10.  There is no Killer feature you can not wait a week or more to update to.  Every year there are some sort of issues with upgrades - maybe this year will be different - maybe not.  Next episode will be about iOS 10 and the new features and more info on the iPhones.

And speaking of the new iPhones - This is an important point - if you are going to be pre-ordering - in the past the Apple Store App on iOS has been the first place pre-orders were live.  Sometimes a few minutes before the web store - sometimes an hour before.  That said - be checking both places an hour or so before the stated time and keep pinging them.  Make sure you have an account set up in the Apple Store app before hand.

    Hi Rob,

My prediction for the removal of the headphone jack is: they will remove it. They will provide a headphone that is both wired and wireless. Like a combo. They will include it with the phone I hope.

No basis for my prediction. I guess we will see.

    Thanks for all you do,

    Dan
