In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote

“However, for the company to truly move forward as a tech power, Apple should hang-up on the iPhone after one more iteration – presumably the iPhone 6. You might disagree.” unquote

Richard Saintvilus, Forbes, 6 January 2013

Might disagree - Might?  Huh - So Apple should just shut down the iPhone line - which is what 65 - 70% of its revenue - Genius.  Evidently Forbes is pretty liberal with their drug screening policy for employees - because whatever Richard was smoking even Gary Johnson is not for the legalization of.

    http://nymag.com/selectall/2016/10/update-ios-10-1-

    security-flaw-jpeg-executiable.html

Apple on Monday the 24th released updated for iOS 10.1, tvOS 10.0.1, watchOS 3.1 and for the Mac crowd - macOS 10.12.1

It was a busy day for Apples servers.

Pre 10.1 - the update notes had a lot of info listed per what was changed / updated / fixed.

    Camera and Photos

    • Introduces Portrait Camera for iPhone 7 Plus that creates a depth effect that keeps your subject sharp while creating a beautifully blurred background (beta)

With out a doubt if you own an iPhone 7Plus - this is a killer feature and you definitely want to upgrade just for this.  I saw a comment from Tosin O where he said - Quote I honestly am not to fussed about portrait mode. Well not for now anyway (might change my mind when I see the pictures). UNQUOTE  -  Yes Tosin - yes you will change your mind once you see the pictures.  And then he posted that Yup he changed his mind - Nailed it - It is just soooo different then what you have ever been able to do with a smartphone camera that again as I mentioned on the last episode - you start taking these depth effect photos of everything and everyone.  I have one hanging on the fridge right now of my younger son flying a kite and I did the depth effect on him with the kites all blurred - it is pretty cool.  Tosin posted one of his Coffee mug. Warning it is addicting - Bokeh(ay) is DA BOMB.

ok other changes for Camera and Photos include

    • People names in the Photos app are saved in iCloud backups
    • Improved the display of wide color gamut photos in the grid views of the Photos app
    • Fixes an issue where opening the Camera app would show a blurred or flashing screen for some users
    • Fixes an issue that caused Photos to quit for some users when turning on iCloud Photo Library

    Maps

    • Transit support for every major train, subway, ferry, and national bus line, as well as local bus systems for Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya
    • Sign-based transit navigation including layouts of all underground structures and walkways that connect large transit stations
    • Transit fare comparison when viewing alternative transit routes

    Messages

    • New option to replay bubble and full screen effects
    • Messages effects can play with Reduce Motion enabled
    • Fixes an issue that could lead to contact names appearing incorrectly in Messages
    • Addresses an issue where Messages could open to a white screen
    • Addresses an issue that could prevent the report junk option from displaying with unknown senders
    • Fixes an issue where videos captured and sent in the Messages app could be missing audio

    Apple Watch

    • Adds distance and average pace to workout summaries in the Activity app for outdoor wheelchair run pace and outdoor wheelchair walk pace
    • Fixes issues that may have prevented Music playlists from syncing to Apple Watch
    • Addresses an issue that was preventing invitations and data to appear in Activity Sharing
    • Fixes an issue that was allowing Activity Sharing to update over cellular when manually disabled
    • Resolves an issue that was causing some third-party apps to crash when inputting text

    Other improvements and fixes

    • Improves Bluetooth connectivity with 3rd party accessories
    • Improves AirPlay Mirroring performance when waking a device from sleep
    • Fixes an issue where playback would not work for iTunes purchased content when the “Show iTunes Purchases” setting is turned off
    • Fixes an issue where certain selfie apps and face filters used with the FaceTime HD Camera on iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus did not display a live preview
    • Fixes an issue in Health where individual strokes are converted to separate characters when using the Chinese handwriting keyboard
    • Improves performance of sharing websites from Safari to Messages
    • Fixes an issue in Safari that caused web previews in tab view to not display correctly
    • Fixes an issue that caused certain Mail messages to be reformatted with very small text
    • Fixes an issue that caused some HTML email to be formatted incorrectly
    • Fixes an issue that in some cases caused the search field to disappear in Mail
    • Fixes an issue that could prevent Today View Widgets from updating when launched
    • Fixes an issue where Weather widget sometimes failed to load data
    • Fixes an issue on iPhone 7 where Home Button click settings would not appear in search results
    • Fixes an issue that prevented spam alert extensions from blocking calls
    • Resolves an issue that could prevent alarm sounds from going off
    • Fixes an issue where audio playback via Bluetooth would cause the Taptic engine to stop providing feedback for some users
    • Resolves an issue preventing some users from restoring from iCloud Backup

But the biggest item from 10.1 was this security fix

    quote

Available for: iPhone 5 and later, iPad 4th generation and later, iPod touch 6th generation and later

Impact: Viewing a maliciously crafted JPEG file may lead to arbitrary code execution

Description: A memory corruption issue was addressed through improved memory handling.

Found by Marco Grassi (@marcograss) of KeenLab (@keen_lab).

    unquote

This one item is why unlike in the past where I say wait - this time I am saying if you have not updated to 10.1 - you need to - this security fix - fixes a big hole - where if you viewed - not downloaded and opened - but just viewed a malicious JPG - it could execute code on your device - meaning looking at an innocent looking puppies and dandelion images could actually allow a bad guy to take control of your iOS device. So yeah - update to 10.1 ASAP - even if this exploit was not out in the wild before this patch - you know it will be now.

So no 10.1 is not just about Portrait mode for iPhone 7+ owners - it is an update for ALL iOS users that can update to 10.x

    11:55

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2016/10/24/apple-

    ios-10-1-iphone-cellular-phone-signal-upgrade/#54d821a9780d

One thing I did not see clearly shown in Apples list of what was updated was the fact Apple with 10.1 quietly improved cellular performance for all iPhones with the update.

If you were having issues with 4G and 3G signals dropping for no known or apparent reason - then this is the update you have been looking for.

One of the things that 10.1 is also supposed to improve is battery life.

I did run last week my iPhone after it was fully charged to see the type of battery life I could get when not tethering. This included when I went to the EntreLeadership conference with Dave Ramsey all day really great event - so it was a good set of mix use - but no tethering.  I had 13 hours and 37 Minutes with 2% left.  That is with 34 hours and 31 minutes of standby.

So if 10.1 does improve battery life - wow.  Because those numbers are pretty darn impressive on their own.

Here is some feedback from listeners.

    From Shannon H

quote I have been running the public beta for awhile. I can't wait to update my wife's 6 plus tonight so I can begin the bombardment of lasers, fireworks, etc. I know I could’ve already but we both really dislike the motion effect.

    unquote

    From Stan B quote

I updated my Series 1 Watch, Apple TV and two iPads last night OTA with no problems.  Will do the same on my two iPhones today.

    unquote

    From Craig B

    quote

I've updated one iPhone and one Apple TV so far with no issues; I will update the rest of my devices and computers as soon as possible. As usual, no reason to wait unless you are completely risk adverse.

    unquote

    Hi Rob,

     Love the show.

As a blind person who uses Voiceover I was eagerly awaiting the 10.1

updates for IOS and TV-OS. Apple introduced a multitude of bugs and

annoyances for voiceover users in IOS and TV-OS 10 many of which I, and

others, have reported to Apple. So, imagine my joy upon discovering that IOS

10.1 and TV-OS 10.1 fixed exactly zero of them.

The podcast app on the Apple TV was made almost unusable in TV-OS 10 and

    if anything it's worse now.

It seems that IOS 10.1 is Apple attempting to cram in a few features they

wish they had for IOS 10.0. Perhaps they should rename this version IOS 10.0

    (for real).

And now, kindly fix those bloody irritating bugs you introduced. I really

wish I could revert my TV to 9.2.1. That  version worked quite well and I've

been unable to discover any redeeming features of TV-OS 10.x even if the

    bugs didn't exist.

     Okay, enough rant.

    Thanks for the show.

    Kevin Barry

    Hi Rob,

I downloaded and installed the newly released iOS 10.1 on my iPad Mini 2 yesterday (October 24).  Among other bug fixes, Apple promised to fix a 'very small text' problem in their native Mail App.  Quote:

    • Fixes an issue that caused certain Mail messages to be reformatted with very small text
    • Fixes an issue that caused some HTML email to be formatted incorrectly

Since I had been experiencing this small text problem for some time on my iPad Mini, I was excited to get the problem fixed.

However the 'very small text' problem was not fixed in this latest iOS 10.1  update.  At least not for me.  The text in my mail did appear as normal size for several hours, but when I opened my Mail app this morning, the text had again returned to its small size.  I am using AOL and Exchange mail accounts.

Rebooting, closing the mail App, resetting the text size in Accessibility and in Display settings all fix the problem for only temporarily.  Then something causes the small text size to return after a few hour.

Does anyone know how to fix this?  Resetting network settings didn't work either.

    http://www.apple.com/apple-events/october-2016/

On Thursday the 27th - Apple will have an October event with Hello Again being the key words in the invite.  That is clearly a reference to updated computers.

The event will be the 27th at 10:00 AM PT / 1:00 PM ET.  Standard Apple Event times.

Speculation again is around this event being very Mac centric.  New MacBook Pros, and MacBook Airs are expected.  Some speculation about updated Mac Pro’s and Mac Minis and possibly even updated iMacs  - again mac heavy.  For the iOS side of things - expect the new AirPods to be officially launched - either available in store on the 27th or for order on the 27th.  But I would expect some amount available in stores on the 27th or 28th.  As the website for Apple does say they are Available late October - and traditionally in Apple lingo Available means you can put in your hands - not just available to order.

If there is anything else that is announced that is iOS related - I may do a blog post at today in iOS dot com and in the Tii App to go over what is announced.  I will not be putting out another episode this month - as I will be taking a couple of vacation days this week and weekend as my parents are coming to visit.

Of course if they are available to buy this week - if you do get them - please call into the show - 206-666-6364 from your new AirPods and let us know your thoughts.

I do plan to get them as soon as they are available - but would love your feedback and thoughts as well.

    18:59

The only thing that beats an iPhone is a new iPhone - and the only razor blade to beat a Harrys Razor is a new harrys Razor. With Harrys new Gen 2 Razor Head - they took the best Razor and made it the bestest Razor I have ever used.

And Harrys also has a brand new offer for you.

    • Harry’s is so confident in the quality of their blades, they’ll send you their popular Free Trial Set, which comes with the Razor and the Gen2  five-blade Cartridge, and shaving gel. All Free when you sign up for a shave plan, you just pay shipping.
    • PLUS, there’s an additional special offer for you great folks: enter code T i i  at checkout to get a free post shave balm added to your order.

Harrys Post Shave Balm is incredible - it soothes and moisturizes and best of all my Wife says it makes me smell really good - really really good.  So good Wearing it now has somehow become code.

Per their Gen 2 Blade - It is still the great 5 blade razor - but they made some improvements - It is more flexible for better control and more comfortable shaving.   They added a 6 th blade at the top for trimming hard to reach spots, and they still of course have the lubricating strip.  I don’t just shave my face - if you met me you know I shave my whole head and before Harry’s I tried a lot of different blades ALL the expensive 4 and 5 blades out there and the Gen 1 was better than all of them and the Gen 2 is better than Gen 1 - Harrys moved the bar folks.  I am 100% a harrys customer period.

To get the bestest blades - Harry's went and found a German blade factory that was almost 100 years old and purchased it.  Harry’s owns the most important part of the razor - the blade and by cutting out the middle men on both sides means they can keep the price low to you.

Plus Harrys as an organization helps those looking for jobs - by donating 1% of their sales and 1% of their time to help prepare people for professional success.  Yes a shave that feels great from a company you can feel great about.

Once again go to Harrys.com right now and enter code Tii at checkout to claim your Free Trial Set and Free post shave balm. That’s Harrys.com  and then enter coupon code Tii   and start shaving better.

    VOICEMAIL - Dave_SD_difficult_typing_swipe_selection

And from Shannon Holden in G+

Quote I just discovered that you can use the stock iOS keyboard on the iPhone as a trackpad to move the cursor around while typing. I'm not sure when this became available.  Just 3D Touch on the keyboard and it grays out all of the keys, this is the most exciting feature I've seen in a long time. unquote

Now those of you with iPhone 6S and 6S+ already know about this feature as it came out in iOS 9 - but for new iPhone 7 and 7+ users coming from something other than the 6S and 6s+ - this is a cool new feature - that should be mentioned again.

And if you have an iPad or at least for most iPads - you can also do this same thing by tap and holding with two fingers on your keyboard - this is a really nice way to accurately and quickly get your cursor where it needs to be when typing.

Also FROM the Google Plus community were these comments per the last episode - which I always pin the last episode at the top.

    From John Poyser

    quote

I had to wipe & re-set up as new iPhone with iOS 10 to try and resolve some glitches & crashes I was experiencing. Most issues are resolved and the rest I can live with until 10.1 comes out. BUT - now I have to redo all the battery tweaks I've done over months. I heard people mentioning a recent podcast covering this - is it written down in a post OR can someone tell me how to find the episode of TII that coveted it ?

    unquote

    From Shannon Holden

    quote

+John Poyser Go to the Tii app and then go to the PDF section. There you will find 19 battery saving tips. I believe this is what you're looking for.

    unquote

    From Francisco Tapia

    quote

    +Shannon Holden +Rob Walch the iOS8 PDF?

Battery saving should be as easy as just turning on low power mode? I mean you pretty much get there by following the PDF.

    unquote

    From ME

Low Power mode will turn off some other features and limit others more then you may want - going item by item allows you to customize more for what is important to you. Low Power mode basically lobotomizes your iPhone. And low Power mode causes frustration if you are being active - like locking / turning off the screen in 30 seconds. And there are other items as well. So it is better to optimize the iPhone per you individual use case needs - and that do helps - but yes it is also 2 years old and there are new features that need to be shown that when turned off help improve batter life.

    And From John Poser

    quote

Thanks to all who shared info - I like using the incremental method in the PDF because I like controlling the features & apps that use the juice. I feel that the Low Power Mode is my emergency battery life extender - only for those times I need my phone to last and know I won't be able to charge. Like when I'm on the conference floor. Or on that last day of a long business trip - when nothing's gone right :)

    unquote

Exactly John.  Low Power mode is when you need your Smartphone to be just a phone.  That is how I look at or as I said when you find it is ok to Lobotomize your iPhone for the sake of keeping the Phone part active - then low power mode can be used.

    Into the email bag.

    Hi Rob,

For some reason anytime I post something to the Today in iOS Google Community, it shows up for a few seconds and then goes away. Have I done something to offend your filtering system there?

    Thanks for all you do.

Love the podcast and all the posts in the community.

    Guy Whelan

Hi Guy - sadly sometimes google will mark posts for review thinking they are spam - and the sad part is I don’t get an email saying the post needs to be reviewed and approved - I must just log in and manually check as such there are some that sit in approval for a couple of days.  Nothing I can do - if Google thinks it is questionable - then it is flag for review. You could always email me letting me know if your post is not showing. Otherwise you need to wait until I get around to reviewing those posts.

    33:52

    https://9to5mac.com/2016/10/20/iphone-7-qualcomm-intel-

    modem-cellular-performance/

Seems when Apple made the new iPhone 7 and 7+ they did not use the same manufacturers chips for their Modems.  They sourced from Qualcomm and Intel.  The Qualcomm chips are in the Verizon and Sprint and Sim-Free Models.  The Intel Chips are in the T-Mobile and AT&T models.

And people have been doing some testing - mind you pre iOS 10.1 testing.  So results may have changed some - but initial testing showed some clear results - those with the Qualcom chips had a clear and significant Modem performance edge over the intel chips.  At least when there is any drop off in signal level.  I will not go over the MB through put vs Signal strength - other than to say - it did not take much drop off in signal level to start the intel version dropping in data through put.

One other thing - the Qualcomm chip versions are only sold in the US, China and Japan.  Everyone else is getting the Intel version.

So not all iPhone 7’s and 7 pluses are created equal.

    35:08

    https://www.cnet.com/news/yes-your-32gb-iphone-7s-

    storage-is-slower-but-heres-why-it-doesnt-matter/

And another place where there is a difference in performance is in Write speeds.  Seems the 32 GB iPhone 7 and 7S write at a significantly slower speed than the 128 and 256 GB versions.  Read speeds - what you do must often - is the same.  But write speeds are a quite a bit different.

So if you were looking for another reason not to get the 32 GB version - the write speed is one - but really a small one.  In day to day use it is read speed you need to be concerned with and that again is the same.

But when you initially are setting up your iPhone 7 or 7+ from backup - yeah at that point you will be glad you have the faster write speed for the 128 and 256 GB versions - of course - writing 100 GB to the 256GB version is still going to take longer than writing 20 GB to the 32 GB version.

Technically there is a difference between the 32GB version and the 128 and 256 GB versions.  Which if you listened to me and did not get the 32 GB version you would not need for me to try and down play the differences and could just say whew - glad I got the 128 or 256 GB version.  An really glad if it is the Verizon or Spring or Sim Free 128 or 256 GB version - because that one is the bomb.

Ok - so now it is time to go over the changes of Watch OS 3.x

To start with the biggest change - when you tap the side button - it is now a quick link to a new dedicated dock - no longer to list of friends.

There are new complications and watch faces, including fitness-focused options.

    • Swipe up on a watch face for Control Center, and swipe left or right to switch faces.
    • A new Breathe app helps you relax - except when I don’t actually have time to breath and relax - having it remind me I need to - makes me even more stressed.  Which then makes me get up and get a cookie.  I eat when I am stressed.

    • Send text messages directly from your Apple Watch by scribbling letters on the screen.  Which is something I have used a few times and well - it has a ways to go to understand my finger writing.  But when it works it is cool.

    • New apps: Reminders, Home, Find My Friends, heart rate - all came with iOS 3.0

When you use the workout app - there is a quick start feature - which speeds up getting your workout started.

Emergency SOS was added - you just hold down the button for a few seconds and it can dial 911 on your phone and notify your emergency contacts.

One of the best new features how ever for WatchOS 3.x is the speed in which apps - especially 3rd party apps open.

As mentioned earlier watch OS 3.1 was just released and for the most part it is mostly about bug fixes.

Here is a list of key things that changed with 3.1

    • New option to replay bubble and full screen effects in Messages.
    • Messages effect can play with Reduce Motion enabled.
    • Fixes an issue that could pause the notification for Timer complete to be delivered twice.
    • Resolves an issue that could prevent Apple Watch Series 2 from fully charging.
    • Resoles an issue where Activity rings may disappear from the watch face.
    • Fixes an issue that prevented Force Touch options from appearing in some-third party apps.

    http://bgr.com/2016/10/21/iphone-7-plus-vs-

    google-pixel-speed-tests/

We are starting to see some speed tests between the Google Pixel and the iPhone 7+ come out.

In Bench mark tests - not even close - the 7+ more than doubled the single core bench mark score 3,488 to 1,565 - ouch.   And remember single core is where most apps live.

But in the multi core speeds the 7+ was still a lot faster - 5590 vs 4103 - higher is better.

In real world testing - some launching of stock apps went to the 7+ - some went to the Pixel.

But when it came to games - forget about it - the 7+ destroyed the Pixel — this comes back to those bench mark scores - and many games push the smartphones limits.

The most likely smartphone that will finally beat the 7+ in speed tests will be the 7S+ or 8+ or Pro or whatever the next gen 5.5 inch iPhone is called.

But for now - nothing is close on the bench and in real world for graphic CPU intensive applications.

On the front for light weight apps - then the 7+ and pixel were pretty even.

    43:08

We have a new dog and he is supposed to be taking turns sleeping with the different boys - the last few night I say who you sleeping with and each time he ran into my Son Henry’s room - and the it dawned on me - oh yeah - he has the Casper Mattress - smart dog.

Casper Mattresses are a mix of Latex foam and Memory foam. No noisy springs to be woken up by when you master or significant other gets up in the middle of the night.  Time Magazine even named it one of the best inventions of 2015.

And with Casper you get a 100 day risk free trial period.  You don't like it you get your money back and they come and pick it back up and donate it to a charity.

    • Casper is an obsessively engineered mattress at a shockingly fair price.

.   Twin Mattresses are just $500, they also have Twin XL for $600, Full for $750, Queen for $850 and then King and Cal King - for  $950.  That is less much much less than my iPad Pro setup.  And as I said you have 100 days to return it risk free. And if you go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code tii - you will save $50 off those prices -   Terms and Conditions Apply.

This is an american made mattress with delivery right now for the US and Canada only and it is free delivery. And When said mattress is delivered - it is from UPS - in a squarish box that you think no way is there a mattress in there - But you get a cool little tool to cut open the package and the mattress opens up and expands to form.  It is really cool Just google Casper Mattress unboxing.

Winter is coming and snuggling down with a thick blanket or two or three is made even better when the Mattress under those blankets is really comfortable.

Again to Save $50 off of the prices I mentioned go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code t i i - all lower case on the promo code.  again casper dot com / tii - promo code tii to save $50 - thanks Casper for the great mattress and for sponsoring this show.

    Hi Rob,

Last year I made my first apple purchase, an iphone 6s plus.  I am blind and apple seemed to be the most accessible to the blind of all my options.   I was just about to purchase an ipad pro when the iphone 7 was introduced without a headphone jack and now I'm wondering if its a mistake to invest in a ecco-system that is eliminating the headphone jack.  I need to switch my headphones quickly between devices, including devices without a lightning connector and bluetooth lag is a killer for voice over users.  will apple be eliminating the headphone jack from ipads and computers in the near future?  How can I efficiently switch a pair of headphones from analog and digital test equipment, audio recording devices, PC, and ios products in the future?  They say Android is catching up in accessibility and I'd like to have to learn as few operating systems and their accessibility gestrues as possible.  Should I get a windows tablet instead of an ipad proe?  This headphone jack issue is really concerning to me.  thank you for yur advice,

    Regards,

    Greg A, Pennsylvania

Greg - My recommendation is stick with iOS - and if you get an iPhone 7 or 7+ get a dongle or adapter for our 1/8th inch headphones so you can use the same headphones between devices.  No it is not perfect - but I think you will find on Accessibility features - iOS is still a much better solution than Android.

    Hi Rob,

As per the last episode I tried a while back to do a credit card dispute for a project I funded that was a no show and they told me since it too long ago I was S.O.L.    Is the law 6 months or something?   Many projects take so long what can we do are we supposed to dispute it one or two months after the delivery date and even by then by the time we paid to the time that we're disputing six months or more he could have easily passed.

    Michael

For Kickstarter this week I was going to talk about Auxillite - which is a dongle type solution for adding powering and listening to your iPhone 7 and 7+ - I say was - because then some others warned me not to and to read the comments.  I have reached out to the project developer for comments per the concerns some folks had - and If they reply before the next episode I will mention their reply then.

    Hello,

This is a message from Kickstarter’s Integrity team. We’re writing to notify you that the iLDOCK - charge and listen to iPhone 7 at the same time (Suspended), project has been suspended, and your $31.00 USD pledge has been canceled. A review of the project uncovered evidence that it broke Kickstarter's rules. We may suspend projects when they demonstrate one or more of the following:

    • Offering purchased items and claiming to have made them yourself
    • Presenting someone else’s work as your own
    • Misrepresenting or failing to disclose relevant facts about the project or its creator

Accordingly, all funding has been stopped and backers will not be charged for their pledges. No further action is required on your part.

We take the integrity of the Kickstarter system very seriously. We only suspend projects when we find strong evidence that they are misrepresenting themselves or otherwise violating the letter or spirit of Kickstarter's rules. As a policy, we do not offer comment on project suspensions beyond what is stated in this message.

    Regards,

    Kickstarter Integrity

Seems the issue was with claiming to be MFI certified.

    Fourth-Quarter-Results.html

    http://images.apple.com/pr/pdf/q4fy16datasum.pdf

Apple had their quarterly conference call. One thing to remember - that last quarter they had one additional week of new iPhone sales vs the same quarter a year ago.

Tim said results were very strong and high end of their guidance - but in the guidance range.

And then Apple reported a lot of downs vs same quarter a year ago - Revenue, Profit, EPS, iPhone Sales, iPad Sales, Mac Sales and Gross Margins All down again vs the same quarter a year ago.  The only up was Services - up 24% to $6.325 Billion.

    Starting with iPhones -

iPhone sales for Calendar Q3 2016 were - 45.5 Mil vs 48.1 mil a year ago — or a 5.4% decline vs the year ago quarter which is smaller than the previous quarters 15% decline - I mean if you are really looking for a positive spin that is.  Also Back in July the Anal-ists estimated that last quarter would be 43 Million units sold on average.  However right be the earnings call the analysts average estimate was 45.3 Million - which is pretty much dead nuts on.  So Congrats to all of the anal-ists as a group.

But specifically T. Michael Walkley from Canaccord Genuity with a guess of 45.65 Million iPhones sold last quarter as being closest to the pin.

Tim Cook said iPhone 7 supply should equal demand before end of quarter - but iPhone 7+ demand will likely remain greater than supply.  And that right now Apple was very supply constrained with regards to the 7+.

For the iPhones the ASP were actual up at $619 in Q3 2016 vs an ASP of $595 in Q2 2016.  While that is up - it is still lower  than the traditional range of $650 to $700 we had seen the 6 quarters prior to Q2 of this year.

iPad sales for last quarter were 9.3 Mil units. vs 9.9 Mil the year ago quarter. This seems to be where the iPad is setting into for a base of sales in the non-holiday period.

Turning now to Cash - Yeah seems Apple has all of it - for a total of 237.6 Billion Cash over 91% which is not in the US vs 93% 3 months ago that was not in the US.

That said Apple still Returned over $9 Billion to Investors last quarter.

If you are an investor you will be getting two quarters, a nickel and two pennies for each share you own of Apple stock assuming you are still an owner come early November.

Looking forward Apple gave some Guidance and a key part of the guidance has Apple  returning to growth this quarter.  After 3 quarters of the opposite of Growth year over year.

An interesting fact-toid - Tim said that there are 2 Billion with a B requests a week for Siri.

Again - numbers were lower all around vs the year ago quarter.  Same as last 2 quarters. But again Tim seems to think we will see growth for this quarter.  Which I thought Wallstreet would be giddy about - but in after hour trading Apple was down about $2 - so go figure.

I should point out I own Apple stock.  I am clearly long on Apple for full and fair disclosure.

At the end they have a Q&A with the Anal-ists - and one I guess does not want to be on Tim Cooks Christmas card list. Steven I got the biggest Milunovich asked

quote does Apple today have a grand strategy for what you want to do? I know you won't tell us what it us, but do you know what you want to do over the next three to maybe five years? Or is it more a read the market and quickly react?

    unquote

Or Put another way - Tim - do you know what you are doing - or a you just winging it hoping for the best and reacting when things don’t work out.

Or put another way - Tim do you have a clue?  Was essentially what Steven Who is going to get those big ones cut off Milunovich asked.

Tim was pretty terse in his response - and rightly so - he said

    quote

We have the strongest pipeline that we've ever had and we're really confident about the things in it. But as usual, we're not going to talk about what's ahead. And if you don’t like that answer you can shove it up your pipeline.

    unquote

Ok - I might have embellished a bit on the last part of the quote - but you know that was what he was thinking.

But if that was not enough Steven I don’t ever want to be allowed to step foot in Apple Campus Milunovich asked the following followup.

    And this is no joke

    Quote

But in terms of your approach I guess to new products, do you have a strong sense of where technology is going and where you're going to play?

    unquote

Which is like Asking well - do you have strong sense of where technology is going and where you’re going to play - which is about as insulting a question you could possibly ask the CEO of the largest Tech company or any tech company period.

To Which Tim responded - quote Actually Steve-oh - we define our road map once a year on take your child to work day.  We let the kids pick the next round of products each year - And then afterwards we have a bunch of Scary clowns chase the kid around campus whose picks last year did not pan out - it is a wonderful time and has helped make us the biggest tech company in the world.  unquote

Which was actually slightly less ridiculous of an answer than the question Mr Milunovich asked - what the heck was Steve-Oh thinking.

    Hi Rob

I ordered my Black 256gb iPhone 7 Plus from Sprint on September 10th and it arrived yesterday on September 27th. It was very painless activating my new phone as an upgrade using my old phone.

My old phone was the 64gb Gold iPhone 6 Plus and this is a crazy upgrade. I'm glad I took your advice and went for the 256gb version. Total out of pocket for the new phone is roughly $365 dollars to get the financing program started. I owe about $680 but if I send my old iPhone 6 Plus back to Sprint they will credit my account all but .90 cents of the month payment so roughly $400 for the top end iPhone 7 Plus, can't beat that deal and without a two year contract. I'm thinking about just sending Sprint roughly $23.00 to pay off my obligation along with my old phone and all I'll be pay is my month service plan.

Love the show, I just figured I'd share the deal I got.

    regards,

    Keith W

Welcome to the show I am your host Rob and this is the Today in iOS podcast -  First up I want to thank COLIN for sending in the music you hear in the background. COLIN wrote:

    Hi Rob,

This piece of music was built entirely in GarageBand on my iPad and iPhone. Even the ambient sounds were recorded with the mic on my EarPods directly into GarageBand's sampler.

    Best regards

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote

“If the market spits up Apple and Android devices for their inability to meet business user needs, RIM stands alone—or will, on Jan. 30, 2013 and the days that follow the BlackBerry 10 launch—as the company ready to embrace them. This is an unprecedented opportunity. As a result, 2013 could be an amazing year for RIM.” unquote

Rob Enderle, CIO, 31 Dec 2012

Mind you Mr Enderle was predicting good things for Blackberry at the end of 2012 / beginning 2013.  Ouch - it was pretty apparent for quite some time by then Blackberry was dead. As bad as Mr. Enderle is at predicting the future of tech it is amazing that even still today a lot of people follow what he says.

    releases-ios-10-0-3-for-iphone-7/

Apple today October 17th release iOS 10.0.3

And if you are saying hey wait my iOS device is not seeing iOS 10.0.3 available for download - Rob are your sure?

Yes - Yes I am - as 10.0.3 is for the iPhone 7 and 7Plus only.

10.0.3 fixes a bug with cellular connectivity issues with the iPhone 7 and 7+ - which included losing cellular connectivity for small periods of time.  Which when you are trying to do anything would make it seem like long periods of time.

Verizon users in the US seemed the most affected by this issue - but it was reported by users on all carriers with LTE and not just in the US - users around the world were reporting short outages for LTE connections.

    ios-10-1-beta-3-to-developers/

Last Monday Apple released iOS 10.1 beta 3 to devs and later in the week to public beta testers.

As with Beta 2 - it seems the biggest change is bug fixes and stability improvement.

Apple also release last week new betas for other devices - Watch OS 3.1 beta 3 and tvOS 10.0.1 beta 3 were also released.

For my new iPhone 7+ I had been running iOS 10.1 Beta 3 since it has been available and it seems to be running pretty well for me.

Battery life without really trying yet to optimize for battery life has been good.  On Friday I did a day trip to Denver and back - and on that day I had 9 hours and 35 Minutes of battery life and 16 hours standby - that was with 3% battery life remaining. I used my personal hot spot for my laptop that day and it chewed up 36% of my battery life.  20% went to youtube 36 minutes on screen and 19 min background.  Hmmmm.  15% went to phone for 1.7 hours of use.  6% went to mail.  So really the Personal hot spot really skewed things.

Back in September on the 20th and 21st I ran my 2 year old iPhone 6+  off of battery to see the life I could get.  I was able to get 8 hours and 43 minutes of battery life with 30 hours and 47 minutes of standby.  That saw 30% of battery life going to the Mail app, and the phone app chewing up 20% of battery life.

I will try another experiment with the iPhone 7+ this week where I run the battery all the way down but don’t use the hotspot and see the life I get then.

The two take aways per these two experiments - 1. a 2 year old iPhone 6+ still is getting great battery life.  and 2. A new iPhone 7+ with a really heavy usage day and no real battery optimization tricks also had great battery life.

    06:48

    http://www.iphonehacks.com/2016/10/ios-10-1-dev-beta-4.html

And then earlier today October 17th - Apple released iOS 10.1 beta 4 - both to Devs and Public beta testers.  If you were already on beta 3 - beta 4 is a pretty small over the air update.

Interestingly - Apple on the beta side did not update Watch OS or tvOS as they did last week when 10.3 for iOS was released.

With Beta 4 for 10.1 - as near as I can find - it is just bug fixes and stability improvements.  No one is reporting any new features or changes to older features.

    bokeh-effect-how-to-use-portrait-mode/

    VOICEMAIL - Bokeh pronunciation

When talking about the new iPhone 7+ without a doubt the biggest change is the dual cameras and the newest effect / feature available is the Bokeh effect - thanks emiko - and I hope I got that right.

This new effect will make you start taking pictures of anything and everything to see it close up and in focus but with the background out of focus. And well it is really cool.  Of course you do need to upgrade to 10.1 - which right now is still just available as a beta.

But assuming you have upgraded to 10.1 beta X - you need to remember this - be respectful of your social media followers - don’t start posting pictures of anything and everything with the bokeh effect - I just don’t think your social media followers want to see a box of Imodium AD with the bokeh effect.  Just because you can do it - does not mean you should do it.

Speaking of your iPhone 7+ and the Beta’s for 10.1.  If you have an iPhone 6S+ or earlier and you are upgrading to an iPhone 7 or 7+ - and if you are doing an upgrade from a back up - note this - if you earlier iPhone is running iOS 10.1 Beta X - then when you go to set up the iPhone 7 or 7+ from the backup - iTunes will stop you and say you need to upgrade the out of the box iPhone 7 or 7+ to the same version of iOS as your phone you are backing up.  Which is what happened to me - so first I needed to upgrade to iOS 10.1 beta 3 - and then I was able to set up from the back up.

But before I did any of the setting up of my iPhone 7+ - I did put on my utomic bumpies.  They are black and look great with my jet black iPhone 7+ - or really I should say - they are barely even noticeable - which makes them look great.   If you are in the US - and want the utomic bumpies go to

As I said if you are in the US.  As well here is an email to explain more:

    Hi Rob,

Just to give you a heads up, I have listened to you talking about the bumpees for your phone over a long period of time at this stage, so when I got my new iPhone 7 I decided I would try them for myself. I tried the link you have given in your podcast, but couldn't order them, so I sent them an email. Sadly they do not at this point ship to outside the United States.

I know you have a large audience far beyond your shores, so I just wanted to share this information with you for future reference.

    Keep up the good work.

Brian - sorry for that issue and thanks for letting us know.

So far knock on wood - I have not had any scratching of my jet black iPhone 7+ - and I really do like how it looks.

    apple-watch-uk-government-ban/

Thanks to all that sent in links on this next one - which is that the UK government has banned the Apple Watch from top-level meetings.  The reason why is it has a microphone and the UK govt is afraid that Russian hackers could get control of any device with a microphone and use it to eavesdrop on the meetings.

There is no evidence or indication or anything showing that Russian hackers or anyone else for that matter have actually hacked an Apple watch to do this - just that Theresa May’s team has implemented this change - which follows up on the ban of smartphones from meetings put in place by Former Prime Minister David Cameron.  So she is just being overly conservative or cautious.

For some reason this ban generated a lot of posts / articles.  Really it is just about the UK government doing something on the side of caution - banning wifi or cellular connected devices that have a microphone from being in the meeting.  It if has a mic and can be connected to the internet - then it is banned from the UK Cabinet meetings - and again that sounds reasonable.

    http://www.iphonebackupextractor.com/blog/

    2016/oct/12/itunes-backup-security-update-ios10/

With iOS 10 some reported back in September that it actually made the encrypted back up less secure than with iOS 9.x  Something Anonymous accused Apple of doing to cow tow to the FBI.  Except by the time Anonymous had said that Apple had already said - oooppss our bad - we did not mean to make the encrypted backups less secure and we will fix that post haste.  And post haste seems to mean iOS 10.1  - it seems that with iOS 10.1 beta 3 - Apple did indeed go back to the much more secure and FBI hated and Anonymous approved encryption method.

So when iOS 10.1 is finally released and if you are one with lots of tin foil hats around - then you will want to upgrade to 10.1 to get the more securely encrypted back up.

We are Happy to welcome a new sponsor to the show - and that is Hello Fresh please visit  hellofresh.com and use the promo code tii to save $35 off your first week of deliveries.

Hello Fresh is a meal kit delivery service that makes cooking supper simple and fun.  My Wife and I really enjoyed both making and eating the meals they sent.  That later point kinda sorta being really important for me and the former point for her.

Even if you never cooked before you can do this.  I even learned how to Zest a lemon.  That was for a great citrus salad dressing.

Each week HelloFresh creates new recipes with nice step by step instructions to follow that take less than 30 minutes to make.

They deliver the meal kits right to your door in an insulated box with free shipping. Each kit has all of the ingredients you need to make a delicious meal.  And having all the ingredients is really key.

The other day my wife was making spaghetti and meatballs - seems simple enough - until about 5 minute before it was done when we realized that the sauce jar had been opened on Aug 20th and it was Oct 9th - yikes.  So off I had to run to the store to get more sauce.  And that is as easy a meal as there is.

With Hellofresh no issues like that - you get everything you need to make your meal in each meal kit and you can choose either meat or vegetable meals depending on your preferences.

But Since this was something for both of us - I ask my wife to give me her thoughts and they are: quote

“ We’ve tried it all. Planning dinner for the week.  Prepping dinner in advance for the whole month. Eating the same meal on the same day each week.

Resorting to making "breakfast for dinner" because that's the best we could do.

Making Dinner is just not really our thing.

It’s not the cooking that’s the issue but it’s the planning that gets us every time.  It seems hard to to find a rhythm.

After receiving our first box of Hello Fresh , I've been made a believer.

Dinner is so much more enjoyable when you don't have to think about what to prepare.  You just open the fridge, pull out a box and start cooking. Every bit of the ingredients are included except for olive oil, salt + pepper.

The meals are more diverse than I would cook on my own. Each one was delicious. We ate healthier the week of our hello fresh box.

Hello Fresh is Great solution to the dinner time struggle. “ unquote

Again please visit please  hellofresh.com and use the promo code tii to save $35 off your first week of deliveries.

Hi Sharde - Right now - before you do anything else - go to each voice mail - tap on it - and at the top right tap on the box with the arrow out and email yourself those voicemails.

This way you always have them.

Yes - you should still have them when you update - all mine came over - but Should and will are not the same word.

Best to email yourself each and then back them up on your computer somewhere.

    Hello Rob.

    I Love your show.

I called Apple and asked about the availability of the SIM Free iPhone 7.  They simply said it's not available.  They added, you need an account with a carrier.  They would not say when it would become available.

We folks on Straight Talk or Total Wireless (bring your own phone plans) need the SIM Free version to just move our SIM card over to the new phone.

What are your "Spies" at Apple saying about the SIM Free option availability for US customers in the future?

Thank you for all you do.

    Regards,

    Mark Denton

Hi Mark - My spies are telling me the SIM free version is now available to order in the US.  So no more waiting for you or anyone else on Straight talk or any other carrier that is not one of the big 4 in the US.

    samsung-galaxy-note7-terminated.html?_r=0

On the last episode which I wrote notes on Saturday and recorded on Sunday the 9th - I said the following about the Note 7.

Quote This device is seriously dangerous - it is not a manufacturing issue at this point it is a design issue - the whole Note 7 line - and mark my words on this will be recalled and scuttled.  unquote

And on Monday the 10th - Samsung recalled the entire line and on Tuesday the 11th Sammy scuttled the whole line.

Hey sometimes it takes a while for my predictions to prove out - this time it took two days.  I think what Samsung did was the right decision - take the short term - but big hit - vs a long term series of bigger hits.

This whole situation will be studied over and over and over by every smartphone OEM and analyst and MBA school for years to come.

    36:27

    http://money.cnn.com/2016/10/12/technology/

    samsung-fireproof-box/index.html

So when I saw the first reports of the boxes as in plural users of the Note 7 were being sent to return their devices - I thought it was another of the many jokes out there around the Note 7 - after all it showed there even being gloves sent with it.

But nope no joke - you get safety gloves - and then an antistatic bag, and an inner OEM Replacement box - then there is an inner box and finally that all goes inside the thermal box. And on the side of it it says ground and vessel shipment only - forboden to be transported by air.

That is what Sammy Note 7 users are being sent to send back their Exploding smartphones.

    http://money.cnn.com/2016/10/14/technology/

    samsung-galaxy-note-7-flight-ban/index.html

While it might have been Samsung that hammered in the final nail in the Note 7 casket by rightfully scuttling the whole product.  But it was the FAA that then lowered the casket of the Note 7 into an unmarked grave.  They issued a complete and utter flight ban for the Note 7 - That started on October 15th in the US - you can not fly with a note 7 turned on or off or in a bucket of water or in a fire proof box or any way shape or form.

    From the FAA Quote

“Anyone violating the ban may be subject to criminal prosecution in addition to fines.” unquote

To put that in perspective if you are a US Air marshall - You can bring on board your P229 Sig Sauer side arm - but even the US Air marshals can not bring on board a Note 7 with out themselves being subject to criminal prosecution.

    Hi Rob:

Thanks for running through the top offenders in battery drain in a recent episode. I made most of those changes and my battery is really good. What a big difference! You are the man.

    Regards,

    Woody

P.S. I'd add Raise to Wake to that hit list. ;-)

Woody - thanks - Yup plan to add that and a few others once I really get play around with my iPhone 7+ There are some features for it - that are not available for the 6+.

    Hi Rob,

I am not the best to help with this, but I was listening on the way home from work and had a thought. The guy that needs three headphones, for his laptop, iPhone, and such. I only have an Apple Iphone and iPad (one old iPad and several old iPhones also), no MacBook or any other apple products. But thinking back, the pencil has a lightning coupler I believe. Is it possible that you could use your lightning headphones on the MacBook? Maybe use an iPhone cable then the coupler into the lightning headphones? I don't have the pencil coupler myself so I can't test this, but it seems like it could work. Just a thought.

I personally haven't used corded headphones on my phone in years, so to me it makes no difference. I didn't think about my laptop, it's the only thing I use corded headphones on.

Love the show, long time listener!

    Regards,

    Kirk Gustafson

Hmmm - Hi Kirk - I have not tried yet - but I will now try and see if I can get my Lightening headphones to work with my Mac via a USB to lightening cable with the coupler.  wonder if Mac OS will recognize them.  I will test this week and report back.  If anyone else was able to get lightning headphones to work with their PC and or mac - let me know what you did.  but be careful not to blow them up.

    Hi Rob,

Just writing in to give my thoughts about the iPhone 7 Plus.

Got my black 256GB 7 Plus 5 days ago. It arrived 10 days late because O2 UK and apple botched the supply of the devices and the delivery company messed up by failing to deliver for another 3 days (they couldn't be asked to find my address).  I got my device after a painful 10days and so I know your pain as you await yours.

At any rate love the device. Not sure I regret not getting the jet black as this one just looks perfect to me.

Not sure what all the fuss about the missing headphone jack is personally. I stopped using it ages ago. I find it very annoying when it gets caught on things while I'm running and gets yanked out of my ears. It's dated technology anyway. It needed to go and I think as always, people will moan and moan and get over it. I haven't tried the lightening earphones yet. Got beats Bluetooth  headphones which work perfect.

Battery life is mind blowing coming from my 6s which I always had to have in a waterproof battery case. Now with the phone being water resistant I might not be needing the waterproof case (poor LifeProof, whatever are they gonna do for money now?😓).

I can't believe the bass on the stereo speaker especially the one up top. Impressive!

Overall I consider it a good upgrade for anyone really.

That all said I still seem to be having what I believe are iOS 10 issues. Still get the control of music and podcast playback being lost when connected via Bluetooth to my car. I started experiencing this with iOS 10 on my 6s so I think it's a software issue. Also the apple maps app sometimes stops working during a commute which can be a bit annoying. I wonder at time whether this is related to my alerts for "time to leave" for next destinations going off while I'm driving and then taking me back on the maps app to the start off screen. I wonder if any other listeners to the show are experiencing this? Would love to know.

Anyway, thanks for the opportunity to praise and vent.

Love the show. Keep up the good work.

    Regards,

    Tosin from Redditch UK.

    premium-aluminum-apple-watch-bands?ref=nav_search

This week for a kickstarter project there is the JUUK premium aluminum Apple Watch bands - or just search for J U U K

This one had a goal of $10,052 and has reached $10,886 and they have reached their goal.

This one you have until Nov 4th at 1:32 PM CT to fund if interested.

Which would be surprising yet - as I have not said much about it.

Pricing on this is about $50 US and it will not ship until Jan 2017.

It is as the name gave away an aluminum Apple Watch band - they have multiple colors and two sizes one for each Apple watch.

This is a very masculine and looking thick watch band. If you are looking for a stylish and sturdy watch band for any of the Apple watches out there - this is a good looking option.

Search again for J U U K at kickstarter dot com or in the show notes for ep 410 at today in iOS dot com

Note - it is coming from Hong Kong - so there is a shipping charge - and the note is that the shipping costs are in Hong Kong Dollars - not US dollars.  So it is not as high as it looks.

    Hi Rob

2 negatives I notice with iOS 10 is there no longer in the mail app, is the option to delete all emails in a folder in one hit, apart from the the bin folder. Also, my keyboard shortcuts appear to have not been retained in the update. I wonder if these 2 things are bugs or intentional.

    TRANSCRIPT FOR EPISODE 409

Welcome to the show I am your host Rob and this is the Today in iOS podcast -  First up I want to thank Aaron for sending in the music you hear in the background. Aaron wrote:

Hey Rob! Long time listener & emailer, first time art contributor.

This a song called “Atomic” that I wrote for a YouTube commercial for my wife’s tattoo shop here on Maui.

I started out with a ukulele idea and recorded the demo on the stock Music Memos app just using the external microphone of my iPhone 6S then added on the Modern Kit & Electric Bass. I then took it into GarageBand on my MacBook Pro (via the share, iTunes, GarageBand options in Music Memos) and added many layers & tracks including waves, synth, horns, percussion, and much more realistic sounding drums using ToonTrack EZDrummer 2.

I hope you and the listeners enjoy some island sounds, aloha!

Thanks Aaron for the music and folks I will put the full song at the end of the episode.  I also want to thank BRUCE for sending in the Artwork for today's show.  BRUCE wrote the following:

    Hi Rob,

Here is a shot I took using the Portrait/bokeh mode on my iPhone 7 Plus running the iOS 10.1 beta. I did some light editing and added the text using the Snapseed app. Thanks for everything Rob! Love the show!

    June 2012

What good is having a portfolio of products when all the products would be the equivalent of 1970’s leisure suits.

Vs Apples iPhone which is equivalent to Levis 501 Button Fly Jeans - always a classic and in style.

    http://www.cultofmac.com/447984/everything-thats-new-

    ios-10-1-beta-2/

iOS 10.1 beta 2 was released last week - of course it fixes some bug fixes.  One of those fixes had to do with notifications on lock screen not taking you where they were supposed to.

The imessages App draw was redesigned for those power iMessage apps users.

Under Setting - General - Accessibility - Reduce Motion - there is a new setting to allow you to turn on Message Animations.

And there is now a replay button under iMessage animations to you know let you replay those animations.

Something new or actually returning with beta 2 is a message warning you an app is a 32 bit app - Essentially if you have an old app installed that is of the 32 bit variety vs the new 64 bit version Apple wants / makes new apps be - then you get a warning - as the 32 bit versions can greatly impact battery life and performance.

If you were using 10.1 beta 1 - you would be advised to update to beta 2.   If you have not tried out the 10.1 beta yet and are wondering if it is for you - one simple question - do you have an iPhone 7+ and are you a dev - if the answer is no and no - then stick with 10.0.2 for now.  If you do have the 7+ or are a dev - then sure update to the beta 2 of 10.1.    With the caveat for non-devs - don’t update if you don’t like when things are not perfect - betas = bugs.

    Into the email bag.

    Hi Rob,

Is there an app where I can take a screenshot of a song playing with one hand?  I miss that about my 4s.

    Regards,

    Mike R

    Hi Mike,

Better than an App there is a way to set your iPhone up to do this for easy one handed screen shots.  I have mine set this way.

Go to:  Settings -- General — Accessibility -- Assistive Touch -- Customize Top Level Menu

Then tap on an icon to Change one and select Screenshot.

Then remove all the other icons.  It is really Important to remove all the others - so you have just one and it is screenshot

Then go to:   Settings -- General — Accessibility — Accessibility Shortcut

    And select - AssistiveTouch

Exit the Settings app - and triple tap the home button.

You will see a new virtual button on the screen - move it to just above the home button.

Now when you need to take a screen shot - triple tap the home button and tap on the virtual button.

And it will take a screen shot for you.

I love this feature as it allows me to do quick screen shots when I am doing a tutorial - as the virtual button stays on until you triple tap again.  So if you know you are going to be taking a bunch of screen shots just triple tap and it is there ready to go whenever you need it.

Once again to set this up.

    Hi Rob,

With respect to Smitty's question you have to be connected to Bluetooth for the maps feature for remembering where you parked to work in its current state. What I use is the Bluetooth adapter from Anker SoundSync Drive Bluetooth Car Receiver. Anker SoundSync Drive Bluetooth 4.0 Car Receiver.

    cm_sw_r_cp_api_pfw9xbJ2TGFH5

The things that make it a good buy is that it is small, the audio quality really good, and the price. Right now it is $22 on Amazon. I do recommend purchasing a ground loop isolator. This will remove annoying interference from the engine. The one I am currently using is from Mpow it $9 on amazon and works well with the Anker device.

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019393MV2/ref=

I was previously using a different isolator but as I found out if the two devices don't play nice you can hear the low end frequencies removed completely from your speakers which isn't good.

Hope this helps, love the show!

David - thanks for the heads up on the Zus - They actually sent it to me to test - and once I have my iPhone 7+ set up I will be testing it to see how well it works.  I will talk about the Zus on a future episode.

    Hi Rob,

This week I can't seem to do a soft reboot on my 7+. Have you had any other feedback on this issue?  I've tried all home button types - no luck.

Well Laura - Yes - there was this feedback.

    VOICEMAIL - Scott_DC_iPhone7_hard_reset_how_to_do_question:

For Scott, Laura and many others - On the iPhone 7 and 7+ to do a forced reboot -  Press and Hold at the same time - the Sleep wake button AND the volume down button for at least 10 seconds.  This is the same as pressing and holding the sleep wake button AND the Home button on the iPhone 6S and 6S+ and earlier devices.

I mentioned in August that Harrys has a new Gen 2 blade - as I said they took the best Razor and made it the bestest Razor I have ever used.

Now Harrys has a brand new offer for you.

    • Harry’s is so confident in the quality of their blades, they’ll send you their popular Free Trial Set, which comes with a
razor, five-blade cartridge, and shaving gel. Free when you sign up for a shave plan, you just pay shipping.
    • PLUS, there’s an additional special offer for you great folks: enter code T i i  at checkout to get a free post shave balm added to your order.

And their Post Shave Balm is incredible - it soothes and moisturizes and best of all my Wife says it makes me smell really good - really really good.  And yes having your significant other liking how you smell is a very good thing.

That’s Harrys.com  and then enter coupon code Tii

    and start shaving better.

Apples next quarterly conf call will be Tuesday Oct 25th at 4:00 PM CT.

It will be interesting to see what is said on that call - but really anything with regards to new iPhones sold for the week+ of iPhone 7 and 7+ availability will be more a measure of supply logistics and not demand.  It is the current quarters shipments that will be over scrutinized in January when Apple does that conference call.  But any hints of guidance for the current quarter will also be heavily vetted.

It does not look like at this point there will be another fall event for Apple - and that means the iPad’s we have now - and the Apple TV and iPod Touch - that is what we are going into the Christmas shopping season with.

Rumors around next gen iPad’s have fallen off the cliff - with now the rumors pointing just to some Spring Event possible to announce next Gen iPads.  Which is fine by me - get the iPad updates on the opposite side of the calendar from the iPhone updates.  That means a lot more to talk about in first quarter other than how iPhones sales went in the previous quarter.

    has-worst-battery-life-in-its-class-new-report/

In some bad news for iPhone 7 owners vs Android equivalent phones - the iPhone 7 came in as worst in its class for battery life. I mean sure it was faster - twice as fast for some tasks - so maybe since it takes less time to do things with the iPhone 7 - it all washes out in the end.

Well except the part about Phone calls.  the iPhone 7 lasted 712 minutes, compared to 1,492 for the Samsung Galaxy S7, 1,579 for the LG G5 and 1,859 for the HTC 10.

Web Browsing was closer.  iPhone 7 lasted for 615 minutes. The LG G5 lasted 640 minutes, the Samsung S7 for 677, and the HTC 10  came out on top, with 790 minutes of battery life.

They did also say the HTC 10 had a 3,000 mAh battery vs the 1960 mAh battery.  So Apple on the web browsing side definitely gets more life per mAh.  But if you are looking to go all day and all night long - you will likely be looking for a battery pack for iPhone 7.

Interesting Article from Johnny Evans - titled - Apple on Track for Next Era in Personal Technology.  This is based on comments from UBS analysts Steven don’t call me malkavich Milunovich and Benjamin No witty middle name yet Wilson.  They say Investors and others are missing the point with what Apple is rolling out product wise. Many are mocking Apple for their Air Pods - and when people mock apple product it is probably a good bet they just are clueless.

Milunovich and Wilson say the point is iPhone don’t matter anymore - and what does matter is for Apple to lay a bedrock of multi-devices infinitely connected.

Quote We consider the Apple Watch and AirPods transition products today on the way to an integrated user experience based on multiple products seamlessly connected, We call it the Ambient Paradigm. It is Tim Cook’s ‘iOS everywhere, unquote according to the Analysts.

Essentially it allows you to do what you want when you want with the right device at the right time - seamlessly switching between devices.  There is the connected world you hear about all the time - and then what Apple is trying to create which is the seamlessly interconnected world.

What was mostly dead now even miracle max can not save - and I am talking about the 3rd Gen Apple TV.  Apple has officially killed it off.  And this is a shocker to pretty much no one.

If for some reason you want a 3rd gen Apple TV - you can probably pick one up for less then the $69 retail price it used to be available for at apple.com

    buying-viv-labs-the-company-formed-by-siris-creators

Many may not realize or remember that Siri was something Apple acquired - well the basic tech for it. Apple Payed $200 mil for Siri inc back in April 2010.

And when they purchased that company - the founders stuck around just a short time.

It looked like they would just go off and party or change the world or who knows what.  But in May the Original Siri Creators Dag Kittlaus and Adam Cheyer - introduced VIV - which was probably just after their non-compete agreement expired. And Viv seems to have been the next generation of Siri.  With more advanced natural language processing skills and more - of which we will not get to really know anything about - because - Samsung swooped in and purchased them.

You would thought Apple would also have had a right of first refusal clause for any future venture.  Shame on you Apple.  Anyway their Tech is going to Sammy.

Or put another want So Yes - Sammy even copied Apple in acquiring a company started by the same guys Apple acquired a company from - is there no limit to Sammy’s  level of copying.

    galaxy-note-7-fire-replacement-plane-battery-southwest

    Hi Rob,

I feel badly ragging on Samsung during this latest fiasco.  Well, now that I think of it, I don’t feel badly at all.  Does that make me a bad person.  I hope not.  I am just an Apple lover.

    Regards,

    Steve from AZ

Nope Steve - not a bad person are you or others that emailed in on this.

And Where there is smoke there is fire and where there is fire - there is likely a Samsung Note 7 as the source.

I really was going to ignore the Note 7 reports - because you know been there done that and did it again and again. But the story changed a bit.

    To the email bag.

    Hi Rob,

The last line in this report is the best.

    Regards

    Mike B

And this from an article titled - Replacement Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phone catches fire on Southwest Plane.

Yes - you heard that right a replacement Note 7 smoked and burned on a Plane.  I even heard Samuel Jackson is working on a new Horror Movie called Notes 7 on a plane.

Here is a short trailer from that upcoming movie

    PLAY CLIP

In this report they checked the IMEI number on the phone in question on Sammy’s recall eligibility checker and reported back = Great news that Note 7 is not affected by the recall.  The phone was even purchased on Sep 21st - and had a black box on the label that is supposed to mean it is fine.

Per Mikes comments about the end of the article - quote

Green’s Note 7 is in the hands of the Louisville Fire Department’s arson unit for investigation and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission is opening an investigation into the incident. He has already replaced it with an iPhone 7. unquote

    http://www.theverge.com/2016/10/9/13215728/samsung-

    galaxy-note-7-third-fire-smoke-inhalation

And if that was the end of this story or the only one - I might have let it go - but there is another article many of you sent in titled.

Samsung knew a third replacement note 7 caught fire on Tuesday and said nothing

In the past week - 3 different Note 7 - all of which were of the Note affected by the recall or replacement units - caught fire.  And those are the ones we know of.

And right now - you know the only ones it sucks more to be than Sammy - is someone that owns a note 7.  My recommendation for anyone listening that owns a note 7 or more realistically knows of someone that owns the note 7 - tell them to return it.  This device is seriously dangerous - it is not a manufacturing issue at this point it is a design issue - the whole Note 7 line - and mark my words on this will be recalled and scuttled.  They tried to take 10 pounds of sausage and stuff it in a 5 pound casing.  They just tried to do to much with the battery - it is too dense - and this issue will keep coming up over and over with the Note 7 until the battery is completely redesigned to a lower density battery.  But seriously - if you own one return it - turn it off - and take it back ASAP - if you know someone that owns it - tell them - plead with them to return it.  It is really just a mater of if not when some one will be killed by this phone.  That might sound dire - and yes - yes it is.

As an add on - AT&T just announced they are halting all sales of the Note 7 - expect all others to follow suit this week.

I mentioned last year and last month about PIDS - Post iPhone delivery syndrome and many of you are suffering from PIDS.  And by Suffering I mean your significant other is letting you know that they need some attention and are feeling a little jealous of your new shinny Apple device.

Folks we have a sponsor that can help defeat PIDS - and that is Boll and Branch.

How does Boll and Branch help you defeat PIDS - by allowing you to buy luxury sheets at an affordable price in a package your significant other will love and feel appreciated when you gift it to them. Like I said a year ago - do something to let them know you still care - and this is that something.

The sheets from Boll and Branch are made from 100% organic cotton - not because organic is a buzzword but because organic cotton is incredibly soft.  And the sheets get softer each time you wash them.

We have had ours for over a year now and they are incredible and really soft. You’ll get the nicest sheets you’ve ever owned for about half the price of what stores and boutiques would be charging for sheets of far lower quality.  I really could not believe how excited my wife was to get these new sheets.  And the box they came in and the individual pouches for the sheets and pillow cases - well the presentation was incredible.

get $50 OFF YOUR FIRST SET OF SHEETS at Boll at Branch dot com, promo code TII.

Again that is Boll and Branch Dot Com.  Promo code TII.

These sheets are only sold online at boll and branch dot com - you can’t buy them in any stores.  That is how they keep the pricing low and free of markups.

But here is the best part - don’t take my word for it - try them out yourself for 30 days risk free.  Boll and Branch is so sure your going to fall in love with their sheets that they give you 30 nights to try them out.  If you don’t love them for ANY reason - they will take them back and refund you without any hassle at all.

They also have towels - and the ones I purchased for my Wife are by far the best towels in the house - plus they have other cotton products.

get $50 OFF YOUR FIRST SET OF SHEETS at Boll at Branch dot com, and use promo code TII.

Go to Boll and Branch Dot Com today for $50 OFF YOUR FIRST SET OF SHEETS.  That's B-O-L-L and Branch dot com, promo code TII.

    Hi Rob,

I have been anxiously awaiting my popSLATE 2, after first hearing about it on your podcast - Ep 385.  Even after they got rejected by the Shark Tank investors this past summer, I thought it was an exciting product that I couldn’t wait to get my hands on.  Unfortunately, I am now being told that my wait will extend from the original September delivery target into February (if I’m lucky).

Here is the email that I got today.  It includes a lot of technical information that you and your listeners may find interesting.

    Best regards,

    Marc from Boston

Marc - thanks for the heads up.  A delay from Sep to Feb is not to bad.  Just Ask Levi - who wrote:

Hey Rob just wondering if you have any insight on the znaps product? Have you received yours yet? Have you looked into their progress?

    Love the show,

    Levi from Moreno Valley, CA

The Znaps have still not shipped - they were originally scheduled for Nov 2015  I think that was three different cities ago for Levi.  I think you were in Riverside probably when you ordered those.

And other projects I have backed have not shipped and may never ship.  Kickstarter and indie gogo - are an investment in a new product and many times the delivery dates listed do not happen or come even close.  If a project ships with in 6 months of its estimated delivery date - consider that a success.

Here is another email on a Kickstarter project.

    Hi Rob,

I think you also backed the Sound Band (it is now more than 2 years) and I can’t believe they still pretend they will be shipping this. I really don’t believe it any more, I think very early this year they sent out an update saying they were getting close and I think people were asked to log in to Kickstarter to confirm their address. Then again 9 months of nothing and now this, do you actually think we still get this thing? I just wish I could get my money back for this, with the Airpods almost ready for release I think this will be outdated to begin with. Yes, I know, this doesn’t sit in the ears and all that, but what a joke it was. I’d love to hear your comment regarding this on the next episode.

    Regards,

    Sieghard

Now I should point out most of the kickstarter projects I have backed over the years have shipped.  Only the SOS charger was I ever charged for and completely canceled - no money returned.  The Soundband - Is one I was going to write off as well - so not sure what to think on this.  Original ship date was supposed to be December 2013 - so if they get it out before the end of the year it would be just 3 years late.  Again most shipped close to schedule or own schedule.  A couple were a little late - and a couple are very late.  Kickstarter is not a store - it is a funding environment for start ups and not all startups succeed.  unforeseen issues can happen.  That said when they do succeed - you typically will get a leading edge product or unique product at a fraction of the retail price.  Please folks remember that when I talk about Kickstarter and indiegogo projects.

    iphone-headphone-jack/index.html

Apple definitely has been getting grief from all quarters about the removal of the head phone jack.

Videos popping up on youtube go down a rabbit hole of conspiracy around apple wanting more fees from the MFI requirements to others to use the lightning port.

So really there are a few options for iPhone 7 and 7+ users.  Go wireless on headphones - with Apples $159 air pods being the option Apple wants you to choose.  But there are a plethora of Wireless options - I am test one of them - and will talk about it once I get it running with my iPhone 7+ - which is sitting here next to me waiting for me to finish this episode so I can get it set up.  See how much I love you all - I put this episode ahead of playing with my new iPhone.

Option two - use lightning headphones - but loose the option of charging while listening

or Option three - use the dongle from apple for your 1/8th inch head phones but again - loose the option of charging while listening.

Or Option four - get a 3rd party dongle.

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/291423994/ildock-

    charge-and-listen-to-iphone-7-at-the-same-t

And Thanks to Michael for this next Kickstarter Project - which is Option 4 and the one I personally choose and backed.

It is called the I L Dock - it allows you to charge and listen with 1/8 inch headphones at the same time.  This is something I need for my iPhone 7+ so that I can also use my iRig Mic HD and headphones at the same time. I hope at least.

This project had goal of $5k - and has raised over $87k - so yeah - they are well past their goal - congrats.

This one you have until Friday Oct 28th at 9:38 AM CT to fund.

The IL Dock actually have 3 versions.

One is the plain ILDock - and that is where it has an 1/8th inch headphone jack and a lightening port. That is $10.

Then there is the ILDock duo - that has two Lightening ports - one for listening with your new lightening headphones and one for charging.  That one is $12

Then there is the ILDock plus - which has a 1/8th inch port, a lightening port, a USB port, a TF card port and an SD card Port. That one is $20.

They also have some combo deals - if you get the ILDock and ILDock plus - combined they are $27 - which is what I ordered. Like I said I am backer of this one.

I like on the ILDock plus the USB as well.  This really will cover me in most of my uses for Podcasting.

And for $38 you can get all three versions.

They are estimating delivery in December for these.

Note if you are in the US - which they are not - then it will be an additional fee for shipping - which was $4 for me - so really for $31 I am getting both the ILDock and ILDock plus.  Considering that Apples USB and lightning Camera Connection kit set me back $39 - just for it - that $31 is a really good price for two different dongles and one with way more options than Apples $39 offering.

Search ILDock one word at kickstarter dot com or in the show notes for Ep 409 at today in iOS dot com

    the-pixel-google-s-first-real-threat-to-apple-s-iphone

    Hi Rob,

Today was the Google Pixel phone announcement and of course, there has to be the "iPhone killer" verbiage from Bloomberg...lol.  You may want to save this one for a future "how wrong were they" segment…

    Regards,

    Darius W

I love this title - The Pixel Google’s first real threat to Apples iPhone.

Well first real threat since the last first real threat which was the first since their previous first real threat and so on.  Each time a new Nexus phone was released someone said it was Google First real threat against the iPhone.  Some will say - well this is the first one Google designed - the others were designed by 3rd parties. Unless you could the Nexus 6 - which was designed by Motorola Mobility which was owned by google for 2 1/2 years prior to the Nexus 6 announcement.

It is all semantics - Google approved the other phones - and in the case of the Nexus 6 designed it.  And the key on the nexus series as with the Pixel is they can be updated on software right away.  But it is really the 9th and 10th First real iPhone killer from Google.  Or put another way - YAWN.

Now some in the Google+ community have a different thought on this.  But me - I don’t see the Pixel being any different as far as impact on the iPhone then any of the previous Nexus’s - which was negligible at best.  Really the Pixel will impact other Android phone OEM’s more than the iPhone.  The big feature was Google offering Cloud storage for Pixel owners for uploading their photos and videos.  I can say I already have 1TB of free cloud storage with google as I signed up for google fiber.  And yawn - not exciting - been there done that - and yes - Yawn.  We will see if it impacts the iPhone - but again as in the past - this seems a lot to do about nothing - just like every other Google phone that has come before it.
