In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote
“Phones and tablets are inevitably following computers into commoditization. Apple may still charge a premium for its products, but it will ultimately have to settle for a relatively small market share as a result, just as it has in computers. There is also a limit to that premium – with the likes of Google and Amazon setting the pace, the respective days of $700 smartphones.. are numbered.”
Peter Nowak, MacLeans.ca, 28 January 2013
Well almost 4 years later - the Pixel Phone from Google costs - Yup $700. Oh and when it comes to market share - People keep forgetting the most important one - share of Profits. Which Apple pretty much last quarter had all of that share. Just sayin. And I love and by love I mean hate the comparisons to what happened with computers. Looks at the shape all those computer makers with large market shares for units are in. Shipping large quantities of units for a loss is not a long term business plan.

VOICEMAIL - KEITH_NO_Accessibility_website.
Thanks Keith for the voicemail - and the site apple announced at the beginning of the keynote event on October 27th is
Apple.com/accessibility
The first 3 1/2 minutes of the key note were all about accessibility. Very nice to see it get top billing.
The next 6 1/2 minutes was mostly ra ra - marketing speak around the iPhone and iOS.
At little past the 10 minute mark they got into news. Apple TV - first up there are now 8,000 apps available for the Apple TV. MineCraft will be coming before end of the year.
1,600 of the 8,000 apps are for TV shows and other video content.
I will go over all the Apple TV items in more detail in a couple of minutes. But To round out the Apple Event - Apple Introduced the new MacBook Pro’s - And I mention this because what Apple did was take a Pickup truck and turn it into an El Camino. The USB 3 ports - gone. Thunderbolt Ports - Gone - SD card slot - Gone. HDMI Port - Gone. Mag-Safe Power connector - GONE. What you are left with are a few USB-C ports and a head phone jack. Seems Apple is still including the HEADPHONE jacks on MacBooks.
I mention the MacBook Pro update here because one thing missing is the USB 3 port - that means you know that sync / charging cord you get from Apple with your iOS device - yeah - now you need a dongle / adapter to connect and sync / charge from your MacBook Pro. Ummmmm REALLY??? Huh?? Well good news is I will not have to spend any money for a new MacBook Pro for well - a long time - because the 2015 MacBook Pro - is the last Pickup Truck Apple made - and for Podcasters at least - or anyone that speaks publicly or Photographers - you know - PRO’s - Yeah - the MacBook Pro 2015 is the way to go.
I sent an email to Tim Cook saying basically all that. No response yet.

New-TV-App-for-Apple-TV-iPhone-iPad.html
Ok - lets get back to the Apple Event on October 27th as it relates to iOS. And that is mostly around Apple TV - and not that there was a new one - just a new Apple App for it.
Here are the key points from Apples Press release on this.
Quote
October 27, 2016 ― Apple® today introduced the new TV app, offering a unified experience for discovering and accessing TV shows and movies from multiple apps on Apple TV®, iPhone® and iPad®. The TV app provides one place to access TV shows and movies, as well as a place to discover new content to watch. Apple also introduced a new Siri® feature for Apple TV that lets viewers tune in directly to live news and sporting events across their apps. Watching TV shows and movies across Apple devices has never been easier.
Unquote
Again down side is this does not include Netflix or Amazon Prime.
In their press Release Eddy Cue said the following
QUOTE
“Using apps on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad has become the primary way for so many of us to watch television, The TV app shows you what to watch next and easily discover TV shows and movies from many apps in a single place.”
UNQUOTE
Here is a more detailed description from Apple on the updated features for Apple TV - and I am putting the trolo music in the back ground to know it is all from Apple. Oh and when we get to availability it is US only for now on most of it. Sorry.
PUT TROLO MUSIC IN BACK GROUND
Quote
Key Features Within the TV App Include:
- Watch Now: Watch Now is where viewers will see their collection of available shows and movies from iTunes® and apps. From Watch Now, viewers can then go to Up Next or Recommended to choose what to watch.
- Up Next: Users can enjoy the shows and movies they are currently watching, including recent iTunes rentals and purchases — all presented in the order they are most likely to watch first. For example, when viewers finish an episode, the next one will automatically appear at the start of the Up Next queue, as will any new episodes as they become available. At any time, users can simply ask Siri to continue watching a show and immediately pick up where they left off.
- Recommended: Viewers can explore a great selection of curated and trending shows and movies, including collections handpicked by Apple’s curators, and dedicated categories and genres such as kids, sci-fi and comedy.
- Library: Viewers can access their entire collection of iTunes movies and TV shows that they have rented or purchased on iTunes.
- Store: If users are looking for something new, they can check out the Store to discover great new content across video services that they have not yet downloaded or are not yet subscribed to, along with the latest releases on iTunes.
The TV app will be available for Apple TV, iPhone and iPad and always stays in sync so that when users begin watching on one device they can easily continue where they left off on their Apple devices.
Live Tune-In With Siri
Siri continues to gain powerful new capabilities, including making it really easy to tune right to live news and sporting events on Apple TV. Siri is now aware of live sporting events across apps so users can simply say things like, “Watch the Stanford game” or “Which games are on right now?” Siri knows additional details of the games, can provide live scores and can take viewers directly to the live stream within the app that’s carrying it. Viewers can also tune directly to live video by just saying the name of the app, for example “Watch CBS News” without having to navigate to the live stream from within the app.
Single Sign-On for Pay-TV Apps
In addition to the new TV app, customers in the US will have a simplified way of enjoying their pay-TV video apps by using single sign-on. Starting in December, subscribers to DIRECTV, DISH Network and more will just sign in once on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad to enjoy immediate access to apps that are part of their pay-TV subscription.
Since its introduction just a year ago, the latest Apple TV has revolutionized the experience in the living room with 8,000 apps, including 2,000 games and 1,600 video apps, across categories such as sports, news, fitness, education, kids, lifestyle and more.
Availability
The TV app and single sign-on will be available in December as free software updates for Apple TV - 4th gen only, plus for iPhone and iPad customers in the US. Live tune-in with Siri is available today. Some features may not be available in all regions or all languages.
UNQUOTE
Ok - Well per availability - December and US only.

VOICEMAIL - JEFF_CT_AIRPODS_DELAYED
On the last episode I said quote
For the iOS side of things - expect the new AirPods to be officially launched - either available in store on the 27th or for order on the 27th. But I would expect some amount available in stores on the 27th or 28th.
unquote
Ummmmm Not so much. Seems the AirPods were not ready for prime time. And Apple rather than push them out with issue - did the right but embarrassing thing of Delaying the launch.
Apple said in a statement.
Quote
“The early response to AirPods has been incredible, We don't believe in shipping a product before it's ready, and we need a little more time before AirPods are ready for our customers.”
Unquote
First - Ok - Better to get it right than right now. I believe the same thing with releasing these episodes. It is the right way to do things - even if it means you get some grief for not releasing when others wanted you to.
But two - how do they know the response has been incredible - it is not like they opened up pre-orders.
At this time it seems to be lots of guesses going around on when they will launch - Some indications are not until after the Holidays sometime in Q1 2017. Maybe they are ready - but the current quarter is going so well - Apple wanted to hold them off until next Quarter to help bump up that quarters revenue. Would be something a paranoid person looking for conspiracies around every corner would say. Good thing I am not one of those people.
From the Google+ community - Barbara E said the following
quote
People are upset if it takes too long to release something, then if Apple releases the item too soon, they take guff because it isn't working perfectly. Can't make all the people happy all of the time.
unquote
So true.
Per when we will be able to get them - the latest rumor is that the rumor of it being Q1 2017 is wrong - and that Apple will actually put them on sale in November and that Apple store employees are already being trained on the units. Some say they may go on sale as early at November 18th. We shall see. In any case it looks like Apple is taking the approach of Better to get it right than right now. And I am ok with that - hopefully more on this shortly.

Ok - So the Apple Airpods are delayed and you have the iPhone 7 or 7+ and you want to know what to get for headphones.
Well as I mentioned I have been testing out the ROAM bluetooth headphones. And I really really am liking them. When I was traveling last week - I really came to appreciate them even more. They are a lanyard design - which again is something I really like. Means no chance at all for a urinal drop or a drop of any sort.
The audio quality is really good - and you can even optimize the audio settings of the unit to your preferences. The person that designed this is the engineer that was the original designer for Beats.
It comes with lots of ear pieces so you can find the ones that work best with your ears.
The battery life is very good - On Friday and Saturday at DC Podfest I left the hotel room at 8 AM and used them all day with the battery’s finally needing a charge around 8 or 9 at night.
As I mentioned they are lanyard design - there is a main unit that is on the lanyard loop and this will be in the front - which you can then just put under your shirt if you don’t want people seeing it - and with a Sports Coat - the head phones would then be under coat - so when not using them they were completely out of sight. But if you needed them to answer a call - then you pulled one out and answered the call. I want to thank ROAM again for sending these to me to review.
You can find out more about these at

Thanks again to Texture for supporting this show.
As I said before Texture is essentially the netflix of Magazines. You get access to well over 150 of the top magazines - we are talking binge reading. Sweet.
I have really been enjoying my subscription to texture - as it gets me access to my favorite magazines - MacWorld, Wired, Popular Science and Fortune. Plus I also get access to PC World and PC Magazine - two I would normally never ever think of paying for but occasionally will have an article that is beneficial for this show or just interesting. That is the beauty of Texture you get access to over 150 top magazines covering every niche with your subscription. And Now that College Basketball season is finally here there are a bunch of Sports Magazines I am reading. ESPN and Sports Illustrated to name two. And I have 16 magazines in my favorites library now - and the beauty is you don’t just get the latest issues - you get past issues. And there is Nat Geo - and I am a history buff and love history podcasts - and The last months Net Geo - goes over the Persian Empire - so if you listened to HardCore history and the king of kings series - well Nat geo gives you a wrap up to that with some pictures.
And as a Tii listener you can get a free trial to try out the service and app for yourself - go to texture dot com slash tii - to get a free 14 day trial and start your binge reading today.
The magazines look great on your iPhone or iPad and that means you have access to all the magazines any time anywhere. And here is what I really like - you can search for a topic across all the magazines. Search for Podcast - and sort by newest and I can keep up to date on my day job.
Sign up for Texture right now and gain insider access to all the content from the world’s best publications and no trees were killed to bring you these great publications - it is all just bits man.
Once again go to texture dot com slash tii to get your free 14 day trial. And let me know what your favorite magazines are.

ios-10-1-1-with-bug-fixes-for-health-data/
Apple rolled out iOS 10.1.1 since the last episode - and as with ANY double dot update - it is about fixing bugs.
The key bug it seems to fix is with regards to a problem where Health data would not be viewable for some users.
Again 10.1.1 is a minor bug fix update - which actually got an update to the update - seems 10.1.1 which was released at the end of October - got replaced by a new version of 10.1.1 on November 9th - which had a new build number. Which well very odd. In any case if you are running iOS 10.x and have not upgraded to 10.1.1 you should.
Into the email bag.
Hi Rob ,
Last week I wrote that I had installed iOS 10.1 on my iPad mini 1 in an attempt to solve the intermittent small text that I experienced in incoming emails...iOS 10.1 did not eliminate this bug.
So last night I downloaded and installed iOS 10.1.1 which was another attempt to solve this bug (plus a lot of others). Well, as expected iOS 10.1.1 didn't solve my problem either.
I close out my email app and reopen it and the text is normal size for a few hours, but eventually it gets reset to a very tiny font, and I have to repeat that procedure. Same as it was in iOS 10.0 and iOS 10.1
I never had this problem in iOS 9.x.x

Michael Dries

Apple Also released iOS 10.2 Betas 1 and 2 since the last episode.
With iOS 10.2 Betas - this is what is new or changed.
First is a new SOS feature - under Settings - General - you will see - Emergency SOS.
One option that is on by default is that when you rapidly click the sleep / wake button five times it will automatically call emergency services. If you never plan to use that you might want to turn it off - especially if you have an iPhone with a flakey sleep / wake button.
There is an option for an audible countdown sound as it gets ready to call emergency services. You probably will want to keep that turned on either way.
Also new with 10.2 - are three shiny new wallpapers. None of which are nearly as cute as my French bull dog puppy - so I will not be using any of them.
There is now a new Videos Widget - similar to the Netflix Widget - not that Apple copied that at all. The new Videos Widget shows you the Video you are watching and with a tap you can jump right back into that app without opening up the App.
There is now an option under Settings - Photo’s and Camera - Called - Preserve Settings. Going to that there are 3 options all turned off by default.
1 - Camera Mode - Turning this on Preserves the last mode such as Video or Square or Portrait rather than automatically reseting to Photo. So if you are always changing the camera to a different mode - turning this one will keep you where you were previously.
2. Photo Filter - if turned on - yup you guessed it - returns you to the last filter setting used. Rather than the default of no filter.
and 3. Live Photo - Which up goes back to the last setting - which if you don’t like live photos - then you want to turn this option on - as it will keep returning to it turned off - rather than the default of live photos on.
Star Rating in Apple Music were also brought back with iOS 10.2 beta. So not a new feature - just one that went away and is now back.
With the Beta 2 - There is no the TV app that Apple mentioned at the October 27th event. It does seems not everyone one running iOS 10.2 Beta 2 is seeing the TV App - as well I am one not seeing it yet.
For those seeing it - the App allows users to browse through all TBV shows, movies and videos hosted online through various platforms not named Netflix or Amazon Prime.
There is now a new Headphone icon next to the battery level. This previously was only shown with the Beats Solo3 - but now show for any bluetooth headphones.
There are some new Emoji’s with the 10.2 beta. One of which is a clown. Because emoji’s were not scary enough before.
There is a new celebration messages screen effect.
There is now a Press and Hold to Speak menu under home button accessibility settings. Where you can choose either - Siri or Voice Control or nothing - for when you press and hold the home button. As you would expect that means it will be either Siri or Classic Voice Control or nothing.
So some nice new features coming with iOS 10.2 once it gets out of beta.

iphone-7-camera-issue/
One issue being reported out there by a small number of iPhone 7 and 7+ users is a strange watercoloring of photos.
It is where pictures are being muted and blurred and lack sharpness vs what they saw on their previous devices. Almost like it is watercoloring.
There is an iTunes support forum post on this with many complaints and a few potential solutions.
And it does not look to be a hardware issue - as some of the users suffering from the problem reported that using third party camera apps had the issue go away.
Apples response is if you have this issue - make a genius bar appointment or contact Apple Care.
Again this seems to only be affecting a very small number of users at this point.

VOICEMAIL - John_CA_issues_springboard_crashing
Dear Rob,
Here are two sets of photos taken in Portrait or Depth Effect mode on my iPhone 7 Plus. These photos show why it is important to use the Settings/Photos & Camera button “Keep Normal Photo” for Portrait Mode. Sometimes the computed depth effect will have an unfortunate effect and you’ll want to use the normal version. In the first set of photos (taken while USC was whooping my alma mater Cal), the guy behind the subject loses his teeth and a bit of his nose. In the second set, the edge of the eyeglasses on the subject disappears in a blur. Slight problems, to be sure, unless the photo is viewed on my 27” iMac or AppleTV. By having the saved normal shot, a photographer has a choice.
One other note, I’ve been using Obscura to easily shoot and save photos in RAW. The app hasn’t updated to the 7 Plus’ two cameras and doesn’t have a portrait mode, but all cameras from the 6S forward may use the app and get fantastic photos in RAW which Photos processes automatically. I’m hoping an update will come soon (the problem is the dev ordered a Jet Black 7 Plus which he hadn’t received due to supply issues when we last corresponded). The big advantage is each shot looks better and has more information which makes it more flexible should you want to change exposure, bring down highlights, or bring up shadows. Every shot is automatically saved to your Camera Roll. Also, Obscura lets you change ISO and shutter speed to have more photographer friendly control of your image.
In contrast, Lightroom Mobile is perhaps a better app in many respects but you need to have a subscription to Lightroom to be able to move full RAW files to your desktop. That runs $29.99 per month. And it takes many steps to save into RAW.
That’s about it for now.
Keep doing what you’re doing. I learn so much from your show.
Best,
Jeff in Burbank
Hi Rob,
Please share some tips to use Unsecured Public Wifi safety? Is it even a good idea to use them even though they are free at places like Malls and Restaurants.
~Karthik
Hi Karthik,
You should never do anything secure on public wifi. But if you are going to use free public wifi - you may and should look into using a VPN offering that will offer end to end security. Look at Opera VPN - which is a free offering.

Hi guys, I like to know what is the "best" (paid or free) apps to keep scans of loyalty cards so that I don't have to carry them in my wallet?
I am thinking some kind of picture and data/barcode so I could use insurance cards also.
I saw many "wallet" apps in the app store, but all of them have too few reviews to allow me make judgment on which to try.
Is there a popular app to do this kind of thing?
Thanks for all your help!

I use Key Ring for all of my rewards cards.
It actually has a robust list of stores so you are sure to find the one the card applies too. If not you can still add it and the cards show up as a barcode that is easy for the cashier to scan.
I don't know about your insurance cards though. I did take pictures of those and keep them in an app called Mustbin. I use that to keep all of my passwords . I was able to share the pictures of the insurance cards with my family because they use it as well.

Mike Pienarr, Jack Reeder, Rick C and Kenneth Berger all also use Key Ring.

I use cardstar, for companies that provide cards with bar codes or numbers on them. I first heard about this on the Today in iOS Podcast quite a few years back and have been using it since.

So sounds like Key Ring followed by StoCard followed by Cardstar are some apps to look at for help with loyalty cards.

iphone-grabs-104-of-smartphone-industry-profit-in-q3/
You know in the past I talked about How About was getting 70+% of all Smartphone industry profits - then it was 80+% and then 90+ % - well last quarter - it was not 70 or 80 or 90 some odd % of Profits - and not it was not 100% of profits either. Nope - it was 104% of Smartphone industry profits.
According to BMO Capital Market Analyst - Tim Long - he estimates that Apple accounted for 103.6% of smartphone industry operating profits in the 3rd quarter of 2016. It share is over 100% because well others are loosing money.
To say Apple was ahead of all others in Profit share is to put it mildly. No 2 in profits was Samsung with 0.9% of profit share. Yes - Number 1 is Apple at 103.6% and Samsung is number 2 at 0.9%. ouch ouch ouch.
Sammy did have 21.7% of unit share vs Apples 13.2% and huawei’s 9.7%.
But what good are unit share if you are not making any money. Last I checked this was not supposed to be a charity venture.
Anyway - Apple has a business model - and the others - yeah - not so much.
And just think what Sammy’ profit share will look like this quarter given the whole Note 7 really did not fully blow up - pun intended - until the end of the last quarter.

Thanks to Dr. John for this next one.
Which is Apple is once again selling Refurbished iPhones. So if you are ok with the thought of someone else having held that iPhone up to their face and coughed or sneezed all over it or had it in their back pocket or in their bra - and none of that bothers you when you put it up to your face - when then great news you can get a slightly reduced priced refurbished iphone from the Apple store.
The good news it they do come with a new battery, one year warranty and a quote new outer shell unquote. But shell is not glass. But hey if you are not a germ a phobe - then this might be something for you.
This is for now - just per past generation iPhones - not any iPhone 7 or 7+’s
And the next time you see an iPhone 7 or 7+ in someones back pocket or see them sticking it in their bra - just think some day that could be your iPhone - that is if that whole refurbished thing is ok by you.

The sheets from Boll and Branch are made from 100% organic cotton - not because organic is a buzzword but because organic cotton is incredibly soft. And the sheets get softer each time you wash them.
We have had ours for over a year now and they are incredible and really soft. You’ll get the nicest sheets you’ve ever owned for about half the price of what stores and boutiques would be charging for sheets of far lower quality. Hi Rob.
I ordered the fireflies from kickstarter about 2 days before the podcast came out where you talked about them. I got them about a week ago. I did notice the left ear bud was cutting out. Fireflies sent an email explaining that there was a problem in a small number of the units specific to the left side. I have just received an email with the procedure to exchange the faulty ones for new ones. I love using them except for the cutting out part. Thanks for a great show.

Hey Rob,
this looks interesting, an Apple Watch smartband with two cameras for HD video and photos, one facing towards you for selfies or video chat, one outward facing. Ready for pre-order $149, ships in Spring 2017:
Regards,
Aric Boyles
Thanks Aric for the heads up on the CMRA for Apple Watch. Which as he mentioned you can pre-order now for $149.
It offers 2 HD cameras - an outward facing 8 MP camera and a self facing 2 MP camera.
All Day battery life - which they claim will allow you to capture 100s of photos or 30 minutes of video per charge.
It comes with a dual charging dock to allow you to charge both it and your Apple Watch at the same time.
It looks interesting - and is not a crowd funded project - but is in pre-order mode now. Go to - get CMRA dot com for more info and to pre-order.

Hi Rob,
I'm curious if you or the listeners can help me.
I recently had to upgrade my work laptop (Lenovo T460) & now anytime I email myself a file (to iPhone/iPad) it comes as a winmail.dat file that is useless. Even pdfs come like this. Never had this happen before & don't know how to fix it.
Thank you,

Good morning Rob,
Have you received any reports of iPhones going to the shut down screen without holding down the power button or when pressing the home button the iPhone takes a screenshot or when you're doing something on the phone it will just turn off?
I have updated to 10.1.1 and done a full restore and the problem still persists. My local Verizon store said I had dust in the power button and blew it out but this didn't solve my issues. It's really frustrating.
Regards,
Derrick
Everything you are describing sounds like a faulty / flakey power button.
How old is your iPhone?
And to answer your question - no have not heard of this from others. Sounds very specific to your unit and the power button.
And Derrick reported back that quote
Replacement/refurbished phone is on the way free of charge. The Verizon dude didn't have a clue why my phone is acting the way it is.
