Thanks JEFF for the music and folks I will put the full song at the end of the episode.

The artwork for this episode is something I created from a picture of me and the Wife from Halloween 2015 - I added the text with the Over App.

The picture is with my Wife dressed as Princess Leia - The Original White outfit from Episode 4 a new Hope -  not the gold bikini from Ep 6 - This would be the last anyone heard of me if I released the gold bikini photo - if said photo existed - which I am not saying it does.

You can see the artwork in the FREE Tii App via the BONUS button for ep 416 - or at instagram.com/todayinios and also as a stand alone post in the VIP section and at Facebook.com/todayinios.

If you have some artwork and or music you have created on your iOS device that you would like to share with the audience please email it to me at today in iOS at gmail dot com and please make sure to include which app or apps you used to create said artwork and or music.

AND I am completely out of Music again - so if you have some music created on an iOS device - please please please send it in.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote -- quote

“Our approach is different. The metaphor I like to take is – if it’s Star Wars, you have these robot personalities like C-3PO who runs around and he tries to do stuff for you, messes up and makes jokes, he’s kind of a comic relief guy. Our approach is more like Star Trek, right, starship Enterprise; every piece of computing surface, everything is voice-aware. It’s not that there’s a personality, it doesn’t have a name, it’s just ‘Computer’.”

Matias Duarte, Director of Android User Experiences,

    Google, 27 October 2011

It is ok for the technology we work with to have a personality - There is a reason Princess Leia put the plans in that R2 unit - it was a feisty little guy.  So now we have 3 primary voice personalities - Siri, Alexa and Google.  The first two seem approachable - the last one well the commercials fall flat with me.

    10-2-1-beta-2-is-out/

6 days after the release of iOS 10.2.1 beta 1 came beta 2.

As with any double dot update this one is about squashing bugs and optimizing performance - and beta 2 is about squashing more bugs than beta 1 and better optimizing than beta 1.

I looked over quite few posts about the Beta 2 update and not one of them listed a single new feature - actually none of them listed any new updates for beta 1 either.  So 10.2.1 looks to be purely about squashing bugs and optimizing performance.

I have had it running on my iPhone 7+ and I have not seen any issues - not do I know of any bugs that were squashed.

    04:41

When I ordered my AirPods I was originally told by Apple I would not see them until Jan 12th.  HOWEVER - I am happy to report Apple actually shipped them to me on Dec 27th. You can see the unboxing video in the Tii App - which is right between Eps 415 and Ep 416.

I need to qualify that this review of the AirPods is based on just two days of use with them.

Per the fit and feel - For me they are really comfortable.  I have not had them fall out even one time.  They don’t even get to feeling loose.  After a while with them in you forget they are in.

Per how they look when they are in - that is a subjective question - One My wife was more than willing to give her opinion which was:

    Quote

    You look really dorky,

    Those are Apples - Really?

They need to do better than that.

    unquote

So yeah - there is that issue.  My wife is not techie at all.  So understand that from her perspective these things are quote Hideous unquote And she said you really need me on your show to tell people what I think. But I am guessing you get the gist of it - she would rather kiss a wookie than put these things in her ears.

However as more and more people get Airpods - it will become more and more common - not sure if that de-dorkifies them or not - just it will make people more and more numb to them.

Setting them up was really easy - place them within a couple of inches of your iPhone and open the lid on the Airpods case with them in it - and it asks if you want to pair.  If you want to use them with your Mac as well - then you need to have Sierra installed - Sorry El Captain will not cut it.  I will be updating to Sierra this weekend hopefully - and then I can use them to do some direct to computer recording.

Per how they sound - Great.

How you control them - Not so great.  If you are getting a call - you have to tap twice on one to answer the call - but if you tap twice - and it answers but then there is a delay and you thought it did not answer and you tap twice again it seems to hang up on you.  At least I think that is what happened a couple of times already for me.  It is REALLY REALLY easy to accidentally hang up on someone.

But these are not just about talking on the phone - there is listening to Podcasts and music.  Here is where there is one clear disadvantage.  If you want to increase the volume - you double tap - and siri kicks in and you have to ask siri to raise or lower the volume.  There is no volume up and down button like on the wired ear pods.

If you want to pause a song - you pull one of the Airpods out of your ear.  Really - that is how you pause.  No kidding. Ok - If you want you can change the double tap settings from Siri to Play / pause - you do that by going to Settings - Bluetooth and with the Airpods connected - tap on the I - and you will see a full page of settings - one is change the double tap behavior.  By default it is Siri, but you can also choose - Play / Pause or Off.

There is also options for Automatic ear detection.  This is on by default - and when you place an Airpod in your ear - it automatically routes the audio to your Airpod - if for some reason you want to manually control this - turn it off there.  But most likely you will want to leave it on.

Apple has basically replaced the 3 button controller with Siri by default.  Which means you have to vocalize anything you want to do.  Say you are in a library and you want to lower the volume - yeah you need to pull out your phone and do it that way - as asking siri out loud to change the volume is not ideal.   Same with switching Tracks.

Yes - I know you can adjust the volume or switch tracks of something playing with your apple watch if you have an Apple Watch - to Do so push the side button on your Apple Watch - and then find the now playing widget and there you can change the volume with the digital crown or switch tracks.  Which is way way way more complicated and distracting when you are driving your car then simply reaching up and tapping the up or down volume buttons on the traditional wired ear pods or pressing the center button twice quickly for skipping to the next song.

With the AirPods You can use them either in tandem or one unit only.  Both have mics.  If you are a heavy user - you may need to go with just one in at any given time - with the other unit in the Charging case ready to go when the current one dies.  It is either that or having down time while they both are charging.

I mentioned the ROAM Ropes before - one thing I really liked about them - is you can be charging them while using them.  And they have a 3 button controller - and they are a lanyard design - so they will never fall out and be lost.  And while as I said the AirPods did not fall out when I was using them - The level of anxiety walking around with them in - is something that will last a while - and will never go away when standing at a urinal.  The Laynard design completely eliminates that fear.

Another issue with the AirPods - if you are a podcaster - they do not register with BossJock nor many other recording apps.

Some apps they do work with - but most recording apps - no soup for you.  Hopefully this is something devs can fix in future updates.

I like to read reviews last paragraphs of their reviews - so here is my longish Last Paragraph for my Review of Apples AirPods:

The Airpods are not perfect - there are annoying little paper cuts with them - i.e. not easy to adjust the volume, to easy for accidental hangups and they are easily ingestible by small dogs - to name a few. But the AirPods are still the best Bluetooth headphones over all for the iPhone and or Apple Watch.  Are the AirPods a necessary purchase - Well if your iPhone does not have a 7 in its name - Nope.  If it does then they kinda sorta are.  If your reasoning so far for not buying the Airpods is the fear of them falling out - then that is not a valid reason - if your reasoning for not purchasing the Airpods is the fear of looking like a dork - then yeah save your money for a while. But Remember even bell bottoms were in fashion at one time - and I predict so to will be the Airpods. Sorry honey - but for now you have to deal with your husband looking like a Dork in public - because I do like them - so far.

I have been running with them and haven't fallen out yet.  I also have been shaking my head on purpose and haven't fallen out.

    unquote

And thanks to Jonah for also pointing out that if you tap on the battery level on your watch face - it shows on the power reserve screen not just the battery % of your Apple watch - but also the % for the left Airpod and the % for the right Airpod.  And you don’t need to be using them with your Apple Watch - just with the iPhone - and it still shows.

    Hi Rob.

I just realized that I forgot to include something in my review, and that is that when you are listening to something with your AirPods, it will automatically pause when you take one AirPod out, and will resume playing as soon as you put it back in.

We are happy to have Away sponsoring us again.  To save $20 on the best luggage go to away travel dot com slash tii and use promo code tii

Christmas and Hanukkah have come and gone - and now it is time to treat yourself to something special.  And if you travel at all - Away has the absolute best Language for you.

Away sent me their Carry on bag earlier this year and I as I said before I love it.  It has a 10,000 MAH battery pack built in.  That will charge an iPhone 6 or 7  Five times. The best part is you can be charging it as you are walking through the airport and waiting on line or even in the restroom or in my case last week walking around NY City.

But beyond the battery pack it is a great bag and meets my requirements -   wheels under all 4 corners and swivels 360 - making it easy to get down the isle and smooth flow in the airport. And it is double wheels under each corner.  Something I really like.  It is lightweight and very very durable and comes with a lifetime warranty - if anything breaks they will fix or replace it for you for LIFE.  When I was in NY City in November I walked over 10 Miles in 3 days with my Away suit case and it held up great.  I am talking from Wall street up to mid-town down to Tribeca and then to Chelsea and over to Pennstation.  That is not smooth ground to cover.  There were lots of cracks, bumps and bruises - and the wheels held up great. It is one thing to go through an airport but completely another to do 10 miles of side walks and streets in NY City.

Still not convinced - well there is a 100 day trial. If it is not for you then just return it for a full refund no questions asked. I love when a company stands behind their product like that.

The Away bag comes with a charging cord and comes in a really nice Laundry bag. And on the inside there is a bag for your shoes as well.   They really looked at all the details in making the best Carry on bag I have ever owned or seen.  Even the shipping box has nice Away Travel artwork on the inside.  Very very apple-ish.

In addition to the original carry on they just added a 2nd slightly larger carry on and they also have mid size and large check in bags.  But only the carry on bags have the battery pack.

To save $20 go to away travel dot com slash tii and use promo code tii .  Again away travel dot com slash tii and use promo code tii to save $20.  This will make a great post holiday present for yourself.

    https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/AirPods+Teardown/75578

iFixit - did a tear down of the AirPods and its charging case and they gave them a score of 0 out of 10 for repairability.

So un-like Darth Vader - once your Airpods go to the Dark side - they are not coming back.  Only Apple could be so bold as to make a device that costs so much and is so completely un-repairable.

    19:50

    http://appadvice.com/post/airpods-water-test/732814

Granted the repairability score is as bad as it gets.  But some initial testing shows their survivability is actually pretty good.

The Airpods survived 10’ drops just incase you have then in your ears when you are doing a chin up dunk or walking around on stilts.

And they survived a trip through the washing machine and submersion under a foot of water for 5 minutes.

None of which I would ever suggest you voluntarily test on your own.

These will get washed - I think that is a given - since if you go out in public with them you are likely to take the charging case and you will no doubt at some point forget the case is in your pocket and into the washing machine they go.

Or you might just put the Airpods directly in your pocket - forget about them and into the wash they go.

One thing I did not see them do - is run them then through the dryer.

But again initial tests from one Youtube shows that for 10’ drops and washing machine tests - the Airpods hold their own.

Which means if you are out running with them your sweat should not damage them - if you are running with them and it starts raining - same thing - they should be fine.  So running in the rain - walking in the rain - heck - even singing in the Rain - well Apple has you back with the AirPods that is.

    http://www.macworld.com/article/3153393/ios/fire-in-the-

    earhole-no-airpods-don-t-spontaneously-combust.html

International Business Times - IBT - is one of those questionable new sites.  That over uses link bait titles and over fills their site with annoying ads -

Once such link bait title was

Quote Apple airpods can catch fire question mark.  New Headphones batteries can ignite if not recycled properly, breakdown found.

    unquote

Except - yeah that is all BS Question mark.

So the answer is simply - Yes it is BS - And no they will not catch fire.

The improper recycling is if you were to try and recycle the airpods like you do wired headphones by putting them through a shredder.  So unless you have a metal shredder in your ear holes - yeah you are going to be just fine.

Really what the article that the writer of IBT’s article clearly did not actually read was trying to say is that with Wired head phones - they are easier to recycle and get the base metals from - then it will be from the Airpods.

The article from IBT was so bad it even said this quote

With the launch of the iPhone 7, which does not have a headphone jack and thus requires a pair of wireless headphones, Apple users will no longer receive the white string headphones that are much easier to recycle. according to reuters

    unquote

Except two things - 1 That is not what reuters said - and 2 - as everyone listening already knows - the iphone 7 and 7+ DO come with wired headphones.  Airpods are optional - not required.

Anyway - if you see any articles saying the Airpods can catch fire - likely it is more mis-reporting of the really really bad or par for the course journalism from International Business Times.

    VOICEMAIL - Justin_PA_mario_run_fdbk

    Hi Rob,

I purchased the full version of Mario Run on my son’s iPhone. All four in our family share an iTunes Store account and typically, in-app purchases extended to all devices logged in under the same account.  I’m trying to determine if this will be the case with Mario Run. When I go to the Mario Run purchase screen on my iPhone, I’m given the option to purchase all six worlds for $9.99, even though it was previously purchased on my son’s iPhone.  There is no indication that I’ve already purchased it.  Not wanting to pay another $9.99, I’ve held off tapping the purchase button on my iPhone.  Just wondering if you are experiencing the same with your family, or if you know if I’ll only be charged once.

    Regards,

    Mark

Hi Mark - thanks for asking.

If you have the same iTunes account - you can get Mario Run on multiple devices and only pay one time.

It looks like you are paying the second time - but after you go through and approve the second purchase on the second device - it says you already purchased it - and asks if you would like to download / get it for free on this other device.

So the process to buy it the first time and get it free there after.

Tap on Tour from the initial screen and then tap on the red button at the bottom “Purchase Screen” is under the button.

Then on the pop up window is a Big Green $9.99 button.

Tap that and it will either ask for your password or to use touch ID.

    Then you see the message

Quote You’ve already purchased this.  Would you like to get it again for free? unquote

Tap OK - and now you have it on your second or third device.

Actually you get another window that says quote Your purchase was successful unquote and you tap ok again.

And then you see all the other levels fill in.

I have done this on 3 devices - but paid one time.

The issue many have is it really looks like you are going to have to pay a second time.  I was even willing to do that for the show - just to find out.  Luckily - I did not have to actually pay that second time.  So I am happy - and my kids are both happy as they each have it on their phones and I now have it on my phone - just because.

    Hi Rob,

Send simple text message Happy New Year to another iPhone - automatic

Hi Bill - thanks for the heads up - and it needs to be exactly Happy New Year.  Not Happy New Years - so it seems to be very specific to Happy - NEW and YEAR.  combined.  And it is a cool little easter egg.  Again Thanks Bill for the heads up on that.

I've received a refund from Kickstarter for Pebble Core, and picked up a stainless steel Series 0 Apple Watch about a week ago.  So far I miss the always-on display of Pebble but otherwise I like my Apple Watch, even if it's not the latest model.  Battery life is not as bad as I thought, but I do have to charge it daily.  Does anyone have nightstand dock recommendations?  Preferably something that I can take with me for traveling, too.

I bought my wife the Apple watch charging dock. It's a bit pricey at $79 (duh, it's Apple) but works very well. It's solid, quite heavy and folds into a small disk so great for traveling. I also supports night stand mode. Granted there are probably plenty out there on Amazon for much cheaper but when I looked about a year ago there weren't many that supported night stand mode.

    Robert S replied

Don't forget that the one sold by Apple includes the charging cable/inductive coupler. The price is not so bad when you keep that in mind.

All the other stands expect you to use your existing charger. so you might end up buying an extra charger cable anyway.

And then gave a link to an article on portable chargers for the Apple watch.

Interestingly I purchased a night stand charger from Belkin for my Wife from Christmas - and she looked at and it and said - No. That is going back.  It was a little too big for her tastes.  It charged both the Apple Watch and her iPhone.  So now we are on the hunt for something functional and stylish - that later point the Belkin night stand did not cover at all according to my wife.

There was another post in the Google+ community I wanted to look into - it was from Steve Bana - and he asked

    quote

TV App - I used my iPhone 7 and an HDMI connection to share videos at work and home movies at home via the video app. With the TV app, my home movies disappeared and I can't figure out what Apple expects you to do to play your saved videos. Anyone figure this out yet?

    unquote

Surely that can’t be the case - as third party videos you upload in iTunes under movies - that you previously sync’d to the Video - app - they must all still play natively on your iPhone right?  Ummm - No.

Actually when I tried to sync over 2 videos from my movies section on itunes - here is the error message I received.

    quote

iTunes cannot sync movies or TV shows to the iPhone “iPhone 7+” because the Videos app is not installed.

You must download the Videos app from the App Store on your iPhone in order to sync movies or TV shows.  unquote

Well there you have it - you just need to download the Videos app from Apple in the App store.  So I went and search for Videos in the App store - and app after app came up that was not THE Videos app from Apple.  Well maybe it is just way down on the list and I did not scroll further enough.  I know - I will just search for Garageband - and then under the title tap on Apple - and it will show me ALL the Apple apps in the App store - and the Videos app will definitely be in that list - Right??  Ummm - No.

So it seems at least from the App store on my iPhone 7+ - I can not find the Videos App - Apple said I need for my videos - to play them natively.  Which at that point makes me just want to say - Help me Obi-wan Kenobi - you’re my only hope - except well even Obi-Wan can’t help here.

The new TV app - which booted the Videos app off your iPhone - the same Videos app Apple now says you need to have installed so you can sync over your videos from the movies section of iTunes - the Videos app which is not currently in the App store.  Well back to the TV App - it does not play your videos natively off your iPhone - but will get them from the cloud.

Seems Apple wants you to put your videos up on the cloud - which is not what I want to do - or is overly practical all the time.

Uggg - Sorry - Steve - looks like Apple needs to actually bring back the Videos app to fix this issue.  I guess we gotta have faith - apple will bring this back.

The more I think about Apples focus and direction with Apple Watch and AirPods - the more I think Apple is trying to say - keep it in your pants - don’t just whip it out anywhere.  I mean if you are in the Mens room and standing near the sync and whip it out - people will look at you oddly and Wham that action may even get you in trouble with the law - as some places it is illegal to have a camera in a restroom and guess what is on all smartphones.  But if you can keep your iPhone in your pants pocket - and see who is calling on your apple watch and answer on your Airpods - you can save yourself a lot of strange looks and more.  So yes - the more I think about it the more I can see Apples strategy moving to the hub and spoke model - with the hub being the iPhone and Apple Watch and AirPods and more being the spokes.

Here is a little rumor - Sonny Dickson - who has had people leak to him hardware in the past - is claiming to have a source that says iOS 10.3 Beta 1 will be seeded to devs within 2 weeks - jan 10th to be specific.  So if by Jan 11th there is still no iOS 10.3 Beta 1 - we know it was not a real source.  Either that or unforeseen issues were discovered that caused Apple to delay the roll out.

Supposedly 10.3 will have a new Theater Mode - along with a quote popcorn-shaped control center icon unquote

At this point details are pretty sparse beyond what I just mentioned.

Per their Gen 2 Blade - It is still the great 5 blade razor - but they made some improvements - It is more flexible for better control and more comfortable shaving.   They added a 6 th blade at the top for trimming hard to reach spots, and they still of course have the lubricating strip.  I don’t just shave my face - if you met me you know I shave my whole head and before Harry’s I tried a lot of different blades ALL the expensive 4 and 5 blades out there and the Gen 1 was better than all of them and the Gen 2 is better than Gen 1 - Harrys moved the bar folks.  I am 100% a harrys customer period.

To get the bestest blades - Harry's went and found a German blade factory that was almost 100 years old and purchased it.  Harry’s owns the most important part of the razor - the blade and by cutting out the middle men on both sides means they can keep the price low to you.

Plus Harrys as an organization helps those looking for jobs - by donating 1% of their sales and 1% of their time to help prepare people for professional success.  Yes a shave that feels great from a company you can feel great about.

    Hi Rob,

I was hoping someone might be able to help me with this issue.

Has anyone had any luck getting the repairs covered for an iPhone 6 Plus suffering with the "Touch Disease"? They are now offering to fix for $149, but even that seems unreasonable given the nature of this defect.

    Regards,

    Leif

    Hi Leif,

We have mentioned this a little bit - and said Apple is requiring the $149 fee to fix something many people consider a design issue - but Apple calls a mis-usage issue.  Yeah no cool.

That said - if anyone out there was able to get their iPhone 6+ fixed for free that was showing the issue of touch disease - when was it you had it fixed and what did you say / do to get it covered for free?

    Hi Rob,

A few months ago my iPhone 6 (not 6S) would suddenly go from 30%, 50%, or even 70% battery remaining to shutting down due to critically low battery.  On the first visit to the Apple Store they recommended a wipe and install as a new phone.  I did that and the problem persisted.  I also noticed that there was a  faint bluish streak on the screen that was visible only when the screen was mostly filled with a solid white or light grey. When I brought the phone back after a couple of weeks the Genius noticed the streak, told me it was a symptom of a bulging battery, and (because the phone was less than two years old) replaced the phone.  The lessons are: a battery that suddenly goes from 50% full to Critically Low is probably not a software problem and a streak on your screen may be a symptom of a bulged battery.

    Hi Rob,

Can you please talk about Kodi and Exodus and the ins and outs of putting it on our iOS devices?

    Regards,

    Evan B

Evan - Thanks for the email - andI will put this out to anyone that has installed the Exodus Add On for Kodi on an iOS device.  What are the pros and cons you found.

For those not in the know - Kodi is the Open Source Software originally called XBMC - Xbox Media Center.  And Kodi is now managed by the Non Profit XBMC foundation.  In a nut shell - Kodi turns a smartphone into a set top box for streaming video content.  For the most part you need to be jailbroken for it - but I did find some tutorials that said you could install it unjailbroken.  But it is not something I tried.  Again I will send out the request for those that are using Kodi and in this case also the Exodus add on for it - on their iOS device - let us know the pros and cons - and if you are jailbroken or not.

This is an older story - but fits with the holiday’s - you know all those bags you see people walking out of an Apple store with.  The ones that say - hey follow me to my car and see if I leave this bag in the car while I go back for more shopping so you can break into my car and steal this very valuable item - yes those bags.

And you know how I say Apple patents way to many things and I hate talking about Patents as a future product - because well Apple patents too many things -

Well take these two things and put them in a blender.

Apple submitted a patent in the fall for their bags.

I am not going to get into the patent other than to say - really Apple - a Patent on the bags.  This is why some people think a few of your patents are well kinda well like your bags on the weekends and are full of it.

Put hey next time you are at the apple store - don’t forget to ask for one of those bags - so you can see all the great patent pending tech that goes into them.  Sighhhhh

This is a photo I took of the Apple flag that flies outside the new data center, under construction in Mesa, AZ. I took this with my iPhone 6 (since I'm still a couple weeks away from receiving my matte black, 256 GB, iPhone 7 Plus) and added the text with "Text on Photo"

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote -- quote

“Here are four reasons why I don’t think Apple’s stock will see $100 again:

    1. Growth in phones is slowing as competition increases

    2. Margins are shrinking

    3. Apple is losing its innovative edge

    4. Apple may no longer be a growth story”

Howard Gold, MarketWatch, 1 February 2013

At the time he said Apple stock would not hit $100 - Apple was below that.  Of course Today I would say I hope he is right and that Apple never hits $100 again as it is already beyond.   Just Sayin

    http://venturebeat.com/2016/12/07/apple-

    releases-ios-10-2-public-beta-7/

Well iOS 10.2 made it all the way to Beta 7.

Apple rolled that out a little after I release the last episode - and that meant 4 different betas in less than 2 weeks.

But Beta 7 was the last beta - as next to be released was the gold master.

Per Beta 7 and the Gold Master - what was different vs Beta 6 seems to have been all Bug Fixes.

    03:47

    https://www.cnet.com/how-to/ios-10-2-

    best-new-features-update-tv-app/

But rather than try and even look for difference vs Beta 6 - lets look at overall what is new with iOS 10.2 vs 10.1.1

    1. New Emojis -  As in 72 new emojis or as apple says 100’s of new and redesigned emoji's.  You get a face palm, An Avocado - Because Face Palm - why did they not think of that before. And well 70 others that are new and 100’s that are redesigned.  Because well if you can’t say it with an emoji why bother saying it at all.  And my feelings on all this - would be the new Shrug emoji if I had to pick one - definitely not the bacon emoji.

    2. You can now Save Camera Settings.  To get access go to the Settings App and under Photos and Camera  scroll down to the new Preserve Settings options - then select which ones you want to make as defaults - including the live photos features or you could make sure they are not on.

    3. You can now resume your test from a quick response when you switch to full screen in Messages Mid-Sentence.   Not sure this is as much a feature as a bug fix - as that is of course how it should work - duhhh.

    4. There are also new Love and Celebration screen filters in the Messages App on iOS 10.2 - To access, long-press or 3D-touch the arrow in the chat bubble at the right of your message, toggle to screen and swipe to pick the option you want.

    5. New Wallpapers on the 7 and 7+.  3 new wallpapers to choose

from to be precise. Ok - not very exciting.

    6. The New TV App - which is more exciting and really the biggest update of 10.2 - if you live in the US.  The idea behind the TV app is a good one - A single App to aggregate together all your streaming TV Apps - like HBO now, Starz, Hulu, Showtime, NBC and more.  Sadly that more part does not include Netflix and of course does not include Amazon Video. But it does include most of the others I use - so now I am down to 3 apps - The TV App, Netflix and Amazon Video when I am looking for something to watch.

The TV App also replaces the Video App that was previously used to play purchased videos.

To be fair - it is said in the future Netflix and Amazon Video will be supported.  But not sure how Amazon Video will be supported if it is not yet even an app on Apple TV.  Maybe it will just support on the iOS side and not tvOS side.

    7. Single Sign-on - Means you log in one time for all your streaming TV services that are not named Netflix - assuming your TV provider is supported.  The supported Pay TV Service providers include - CenturyLink Prism, DirecTV, Dish, GVTC, GTA, Hawaiian Telcom, Hotwire, Metrocast, Service Electric and Sling TV.

    8. Updated Photos, News and Music Apps - These apps all received minor but useful updates.  The Photos App has improved functionality around grouping similar photos of the same person.

For the News App - There is a new Saved Section where you can find stories you well saved for later reading.  And you can now swipe left to go to the next story.

For the music App - the swipe up from the bottom of the screen music controls now include - Shuffle, repeat and up next.

    9 - Accessibility updates include:

    Adds BraillePen14 support to VoiceOver

    – Fixes an issue where the braille table could switch unexpectedly with VoiceOver

    – Fixes an issue where sometimes Siri enhanced voices were unavailable to VoiceOver

    – Fixes an issue where VoiceOver users could not re-order items in lists

    – Fixes an issue where Switch Control was sometimes unable to delete Voicemails

10 - Other improvements and fixes

    – Adds notification support for HomeKit accessories including window coverings, occupancy, motion, door/window, smoke, carbon monoxide, and water leak sensors

    – Adds notification support for HomeKit accessories when software updates are available to HomeKit accessories

    – Improves Bluetooth performance and connectivity with 3rd party accessories

    – Fixes an issue that could cause FaceTime participants to appear out of focus

    – Fixes an issue that could cause FaceTime calls to appear with incorrect aspect ratio and orientation

    – Fixes an issue that prevented some Visual Voicemail from completing playback

    – Fixes a Safari Reader issue that could cause articles to open as empty pages

    – Fixes an issue that could cause Safari to quit unexpectedly after marking an item as read in Reading List

    Hi Rob,

I recently updated my  iPhone 6s and iPad Air2 to IOS 10.2. Imagine  my chagrin to discover that zero, yes, zero, of the Voiceover bugs  introduced in IOS 10.01 were fixed.

Ergo, I was less surprised to learn that TV-OS 10.1 fixed exactly zero  of the Voiceover bugs introduced in TV-OS 10.0.

This is extremely irritating especially with  regard to the Apple TV. It remains the only Apple device I've ever owned that I wish I could revert to an earlier version of the OS.

    Regards,

    Kevin Barry

    http://www.macworld.com/article/3149514/consumer-

    electronics/apple-releases-updates-for-ios-watchos-

    and-tvos.html#tk.rss_all

Not only was iOS 10.2 released - so were updates for tvOS and watchOS.   For the Apple TV with tvOS 10.1 - The biggest item in this update is the TV app - which becomes the single point of access for many of your streaming TV apps and syncs with the TV app on iOS.  The main screen is now the TV App.  So if you hit the home button above the volume button - it now takes you to the TV App.  Not sure if I like that.  Actually right now I don’t - maybe in the future when Netflix is part of it - I might like that better. But if you use lots of game apps - you really will not like it.

And finally watchOS - 3.1.1 is the latest new version - and to update - make sure your iPhone is updated to 10.2 first, and then make sure both your iPhone and Apple Watch are on the same Wifi network, and that your apple watch is charged to over 50% and your apple watch is connected to the charger.

Some of the changes include the following:

    • Fixes an issue that could prevent contact names from appearing in the Messages app and notifications
    • Fixes an issue that could impact ability to respond to notifications
    • Fixes an issue that may prevent the Activity rings from displaying on the Activity watch faces

    http://fortune.com/2016/12/14/apple-watch-watchos-update/

Well that Watch OS update was actually pulled shortly after it was released at least for Series 2 Watch owners - as there were reports from Series 2 owners of their watches being bricked.

    Apple said the following:

“A very small number of Apple Watch customers experienced an issue while installing watchOS 3.1.1, so as a precaution we’ve pulled back the software update. Any customers impacted should contact AppleCare, but no action is required if the update installed successfully. We are working on a fix for an upcoming software update,”

On Apples website, users were instructed to force a restart by pressing down the side button and the Digital Crown and holding both down until it reset, but when they did that, if the problem still wasn’t fixed - the only suggestion was to take the bricked Watch to the nearest Apple Store.  Brilliant.

As always it is always best to wait before jumping in.  At this point - it seems safe to update to iOS 10.2 and also tvOS 10.1 - but For watchOS 3.1.1 - well it sounds like for at least series 2 owners that version is no longer available for updating to.

I did update my original Apple watch to version 3.1.1 with no issues - but luckily did not get around to updating my wife’s series 2 watch.  Because again for her I always wait.

And 2 days after iOS 10.2 gold master was released to the world - Apple released 10.2.1 Beta 1.  As with Any double dot update - it is mostly about squashing bugs.

Actually every post I read on 10.2.1 beta 1 says it is just about bug fixes - no one in any of those posts had found any changes or additions to the features.

Why not treat yourself to something special this Christmas - Something you can enjoy every night, something that will improve the quality of your sleep - I am of course talking about getting yourself a great Casper Mattress.

Casper Mattresses are a mix of Latex foam and Memory foam. No noisy springs to be wake up your significant other when you get up in the middle of the night to sneak some holiday cookies.  Time Magazine even named it one of the best inventions of 2015.

And with Casper you get a 100 day risk free trial period.  You don't like it you get your money back and they come and pick it back up and donate it to a charity.

    • Casper is an obsessively engineered mattress at a shockingly fair price.

.   Twin Mattresses are just $500, they also have Twin XL for $600, Full for $750, Queen for $850 and then King and Cal King - for  $950.  That is less much much less than my iPad Pro setup.  And as I said you have 100 days to return it risk free. And if you go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code tii - you will save $50 off those prices -   Terms and Conditions Apply.

This is an american made mattress with delivery right now for the US and Canada only and it is free delivery. And When said mattress is delivered - it is from UPS - in a squarish box that you think no way is there a mattress in there - But you get a cool little tool to cut open the package and the mattress opens up and expands to form.  It is really cool Just google Casper Mattress unboxing.

Winter is coming and snuggling down with a thick blanket or two or three is made even better when the Mattress under those blankets is really comfortable.

Again to Save $50 off of the prices I mentioned go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code t i i - all lower case on the promo code.  again casper dot com / tii - promo code tii to save $50 - thanks Casper for the great mattress and for sponsoring this show.

    VOICEMAIL - Todd_AirPods

Thanks to Larry T and Richard E who sent in emails at 8:23 AM CT and 8:24 AM CT respectively on December 13 th saying the AirPods were for sale.  I was on early morning conference calls and did not see them until a little after 9:45 AM - and by 9:54 AM when I had placed my order and received my confirmation email - I missed the first group of AirPods that were shipping before Christmas.  Luckily I ordered them for me - but still it will be Jan 12th before I get mine.

I did send out a push notification as soon as I heard - and depending on where you live that seems to have come just in time.  Here is one email I received:

    Hi Rob.

I've just received my AirPods in the mail. I wanted to thank you for the notification in the Tii app as I would have missed out otherwise. It came through at 6:30am and I ordered them straight away. When I checked at 3pm that day shipping time was out to 4 weeks and by the next morning it was out to 6 weeks.

    Regards

    Matt,

    http://betanews.com/2016/12/13/apple-airpods-sold-

    out-wireless-headphones-christmas/

Well evidently - they did sell out quickly - and depending on where you lived - very very quickly.

So if you were like me and received a Jan 12th or later delivery - but unlike me are looking at them as a gift for someone - what can you do?   Well this week you can camp out at a local apple store and hope to get really lucky.

    According to Apple quote

AirPods will be shipping in limited quantities at launch and customers are encouraged to check online for updates on availability and estimated delivery dates. Stores will receive regular AirPod shipments

    unquote

It is either camping out in-front of an Apple store - or you could order them and print out the receipt and pit in a nice box.  Because - yes that always has the same impact as getting the physical device.  And no - cutting the wires off the current airpods and putting them in the box with the receipt is not going to make it any better.

    http://www.indabaa.com/how-to-pair-airpods-with-

    iphone-ipad-apple-watch-mac-apple-tv/

So lets assume you are one of the lucky ones and you do get the AirPods - and you have multiple devices - maybe you want to pair them with your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV and Mac.  Very reasonable to have all those devices.  Is it possible to pair the same set of headphones to all 5 of those different devices.  Yes - Yes it is.  And there is a link in the shows notes for Ep 415 titled - How to Pair Apple AirPods with iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple TV

That will go over how to do this.  It is pretty easy for the iOS and Apple Watch.  And should be easy for the mac - but the Apple TV - that gets a little trickier.  But still doable.

    airpods-69-replacement/

Now lets fast forward to oh the day after you get your Airpods.

So what happens WHEN you loose one of the AirPods - well no problem says apple you can replace either one for JUST $69.

But what happens WHEN you loose the Charging case.  No problem says Apple - you can replace it for JUST $69.

Because you know $69 + $69 + $69 equals the original $159 right. Wait I just went to check that on my Apple calculator app - and it must be broken because it says $69 + $69 + $69 = $207 - Yup my calculator must be broken that is $48 higher than it should be well either that or Apple is trying to get that 200+ Billion cash horde up to 250+ billion.

I just hope the AirPods come with a nutrition statement - as I have a feeling one of them will eventually end up in the belly of my French bull dog.  But seriously - what happens when stomach acid and Lithium ion batteries meet?  Any Vets want to chime in on this?  You know this is going to happen to more than a few people and their dogs.

Give me a call 206-666-6364  - that’s 206-moon-dog - or send us an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com

    http://digg.com/2016/apple-airpods-reviews

The reviews are coming in from the different press orgs out there.

Here are the last few lines from some of those reviews.

    From MacWorld quote

The three-button remote on wired earbuds is a much faster, easier way to control your music than double-tapping one ear and then trying to get Siri to do what you want. But I can’t help liking the AirPods—the cool design and powerful sound just keep me coming back. I just wish they had another gesture, or smarter/faster Siri, to be as convenient as what they’re replacing.

    unquote

    From Engadget

    quote

If Apple had made the software and controls a little more flexible, this review might have taken a very different turn. If you're reading this, Apple, this was a solid first attempt. Don't give up on the concept, because I believe future AirPods could be great.

    unquote

From Wired (which yes is a little ironic to do a review on wireless headphones - but I digress)

    quote

All that said, I’m really looking forward to what the AirPods become. They have the potential to be the kind of project that goes from accessory or hobby to critical piece of Apple’s future. The AirPods, above all else, are Siri machines. And just like Siri, they have a bright future—and a seriously awkward present.

    unquote

    From CNET

    quote

As proof of how more connected devices could glom onto your iCloud device world, AirPods show interesting promise. And they could be the type of always-in wearables to extend beyond the Apple Watch. But for now, they're mostly just small, nice wireless earphones that cost a lot and lack a good remote.

    unquote

From Mashable - once I could past the pop ups / pop overs / pop unders and other annoying ads.

    quote

What I do know is that my fears of being laughed at on Broadway never materialized. The more I wore the AirPods, the more I enjoyed them and it occurred to me that the more people who bought them, wore them comfortably and enjoyed using them and even started singing their praises, the more public sentiment on the AirPods' look might shift.

after a commute through the city, a trek through a crowded Penn Station and a ride home on a busy train (the conductor noticed my iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, but didn't comment on the odd white devices hanging from my ears), I arrived home with the realization that opinions on Twitter are one thing, but reality may be another another.

And now from those that kiss Apples ring - to those that have no skin in the game.

From Michael Polinske from the Tii G+ community

    quote

Just opened my AirPods. They seem to stay in my ears quite well. Haven't tried walking around with them, but much better than the EarPods. Currently charging them because the case only had 10% and one of them only had like 75%. I'll let you know tomorrow after using them for a full day how it goes.

I noticed that it was automatically added to my MacBook and iPad though I only initially paired it to my iPhone.

So far I am impressed. I don't listen to music too much, but do listen to a lot of podcasts.

    unquote

Then there is a Video of a guy running 10 kilometers with them in and they stayed in place.  Most of the reviews I am seeing with regards to them staying in your ears - say they do.

    Hi Rob,

You were discussing that the battery issues for the iPhone may be related to a software issue rather than a hardware problem.

I found that i only have the issue when using the podcast app.

When i get up early in the morning and do a update of the podcast list my phone shuts down and tells me to plug in the charger  because the battery is dead. Even if the charge was at 43% just before.

When I plug it in my phone starts up and shows 43% and charges.

I don't have this problem when it has been on the charger at night and is at 100%.

(Even when no longer on the charger)

Maybe this can help your listeners resolve this issue. Or at least reproduce this problem.

You do get lots of levels, amazing sound and graphics, hands down better than any .99 cent game of course if you don't care for runner games, I understand you not liking it.

not long ago I bought the Formula 1 game as well for 9.99 I love that I don't have to wait for paid periods that encourage me to not play (ala RealRacing i'm looking at you!) I much rather pay for a fully working game so I can play when I have time, instead of getting gimped

The tool becomes visible when an iCloud user receives an unsolicited calendar invite from a sender who is not known as a contact within their contacts database. You can then double-click the event and report is as junk.

    Here’s how to do it:

    1. Select the offending invitation in iCloud Calendar online

    • 2. Double-click the event
    • 3.  A new window opens in which you’ll see the ‘Report Junk’ option
    • 4. Tap this and a window appears to confirm this is what you want to do or tap ‘Not Junk’ if you’ve made an error

    pebble-smartwa.html

We talked on the last episode about the rumor about Pebble being acquired by Fitbit - and it was pretty much a done deal - well rumor is no more.

It has been confirmed by both parties and more than an acquisition - it seems to be more of a fire sale.

So the worst of the rumors was true.  Fitbit gets some of the pebble engineers and the software and intellectual properties - but the rest - the hardware - that seems to be dead.

If you are a pebble fan and want to read about what the heck happened - there is a great article from Backchannel that goes over it in detail - talking to the CEO of Pebble.

If you are someone that is currently funding their most recent kickstarter project - The Pebble Time 2 and Pebble Core have both been canceled - and  backers from Kickstarter and those who pre-ordered will be receiving full refunds over the next 4-8 weeks with no actions required. Anyone who pre-ordered a Pebble 2 smartwatch and was not charged for it will also have their orders canceled.

    From Pebble themselves:

    quote

    • - Pebble is no longer promoting, manufacturing, or selling any devices.
    • - Pebble devices will continue to work as normal. No immediate changes to the Pebble user experience will happen at this time.
    • - Pebble functionality or service quality may be reduced in the future.
    • - Warranty support is no longer available for Pebble watches. How-to information and troubleshooting can still be found on our Support page and in the Pebble Forum.

And you can find more info from Pebble by looking for the link titled - Pebble’s next step - in the show notes for ep 415

It is clear the Apple watch had a lot to do with the demise of the Pebble - and for that I am sad.  I really liked my Pebble - and in some ways it was better than the Apple watch - at least in terms of Battery life.  I talked before on this show - that depending on what you wanted a smartwatch for - the pebble was in some cases the better choice.

Thanks to all that sent in this next article. And this one goes under - I am sure glad I have an iOS smartphone category.

It seems that brand spanking new Android handsets might have malware pre-installed at the factory.  This according to the Antivirus company Doctor Web.  Malware has been found to be pre-installed in the firmware of dozens of cheap android handsets right out of the box.

While most of those discovered do come from low-end devices from companies most no one has heard of - at least two of the handsets came from Lenovo.

One way to reduce the stress level Android users have about their phone getting infected with Malware - is to just infect it before they get it - then they will not have to worry about getting infected for the first time.  Brilliant !!

First, I would say that instead of using the home button to wake the phone, grab the side of the phone to depress the wake/sleep button. This does not need skin contact to wake the screen. You then can tap the pause icon.

Second, I would try and use headphones with the controls either on the cord or the headphones themselves. Earpods work great for this and they came with your phone.

    Regards,

    Jim

    a-bedtime-story-projector-for-your-mobile

For Kickstarter projects - we have two this week.

The first one is called - Moonlite - a bedtime story projector for your mobile phone.

This one had a goal of 20k - and has raised over 100k and counting.

You have until Jan 12th 6:27 PM CT to fund this one.

    So what is Moonlite.

    Well according to the site

    quote

Imagine projecting your child's favorite bedtime story onto the ceiling or wall while they are snuggling in bed with you. Moonlite makes bedtime stories come to life, with full HD story images and in-app sound effects to make the reading experience immersive and magical for children.

    unquote

Simple put - it uses the light from your iPhone to power the projector - and you have disc that you turn to have different image you project on the ceiling or wall that go along with the story you are reading.

The starter pack is $35.  Pricing goes up from there - with more stories and additional units.  The $65 Super Value Pack gets you 1 moonlite device and all 7 story reels.

They are showing an April 2017 ship date.

This looks like a great one for anyone with toddlers and young children.

Search for Moonlite - one word spelled - m o o n  l i t e - at kickstarter.com or in the show notes for ep 415 at today in iOS dot com.

I mentioned two projects and the second one is called

iDockALL2 - true one hand undocking with a twist

This one had a goal of $10k and has raised over 17k.  So congrats.  This one you only have until Dec 22nd at 9:59 AM CT to fund - so snap snap.

    From the description

    quote

One hand undocking, works with all iPhones, iPads, and iPods. Release system allows continuous charging!  The iDockAll 2 is very easy to use: secure it to your desk and the sticky pad will allow a true one hand undocking experience. The special cable head that we have designed tilts back and forth in the dock allowing the docking of practically any Smart Phone or Tablet. If you pull your phone straight up, it detaches from the dock. If you move your phone back first, and then pull up, the head is released. This means you can keep using your phone without interrupting the charge. Perfect if you're low on battery!

Pricing on this is $29 and they say it will ship in April 2017

    Hi Rob,

I used SnapSeed to create & tune the image then overlay the branding text, and tweak the image further with filters. I wanted to see how far I could take it with a single App - and SnapSeed is pretty full featured with a nice intuitive interface to make a lot of powerful image tools easy to use.

    Thanks

    http://www.redmondpie.com/ios-10.2-beta-4-download-

    now-available/

Apple went and released two new beta’s last week - on Monday they released iOS 10.2 Beta 4 and then at the end of the week they released iOS 10.2 Beta 5.

While one more beta was thought possible - no one was predicting two more beta’s in one week for iOS 10.2.

With Beta 4 - it was mostly you guessed it about squashing bugs.  Actually I could not find any articles that talked about any new features found in Beta 4 vs Beta 3.

    04:12

    http://www.macrumors.com/2016/12/02/apple-

    seeds-ios-10-2-beta-5/

And with beta 5 - it is the same as with beta 4 - bug squashing seems to be all anyone is reporting.

Some are saying Beta 5 is the Gold master version that will go out to the public - and the GM version of iOS 10.2 is likely going out this week.

    http://www.redmondpie.com/download-apple-releases-

    http://www.technobuffalo.com/2016/12/05/ios-10-2-beta-6-

    out-for-developers-and-public-testers-now/

And another first for Apple - they released Beta 6 on Monday the 5th.  That means 3 betas in 8 days - that is a new record for Apple. Anyone saying they predicted betas 4,5 and 6 in an 8 day window is full of it.  This was really a unique situation.

What is new in Beta 6 vs beta 5 - well that is hard to say - because most people were still trying to find anything new in Beta 5 vs beta 4.  Safe to say beta 6 is about bug squashing and optimization.   Beta 5 actually ran pretty well for me over the weekend with the exception of one issue and that being  the home button would not always wake up the phone and I would have to hit the power button.  I have not seen that issue since I updated to Beta 6.  So maybe that was the one key bug they squashed.

Both Devs and public beta testers can get iOS 10.2 beta 6 - but hurry because Apple could release beta 7 tomorrow or maybe this will be the one that becomes the gold master.

    06:00

    https://9to5mac.com/2016/12/06/tvos-10-1-beta-5/

Apple also updated tvOS 10.1 to beta 5.  I have not talked much about this - but it seems likely before the next episode tvOS 10.1 will launch - and the biggest additions are the TV App Apple recently announced and single sign on - which is great as it unlocks all the apps your cable provider allows for.  So no more going through the CBS app getting the code from your computer and unlocking and then the NBC app and getting the code from your computer and unlocking and the AMC app and so on and so on.

These are both very nice additions for the Apple TV and I am looking forward to updating once this goes gold master.  Updating to Apple TV’s right away is typically ok - it is not something you normally need for work.  That said the Wife will not let me run beta software on our Apple TV’s.

    VOICEMAIL - Tom_NJ_iPhone6S battery

Apple has a tool where you can enter in your Serial number for your iPhone 6S to see if it is eligible for a new battery.  This relates to the unexpected shut down issue.

Apple is still saying it is just a small number of iPhone 6S models that were manufactured between Sept and Oct 2015 that have the faulty battery.  And these battery issues are the opposite of Samsungs where they went boom - Apples batteries just go completely inactive.

From Jack Reeder in the Tii Google+ community:

    Quote

For the record, yesterday I was driving with Apple maps. At 50% power the phone shut down. I could not restart until I got home and plugged it into power. It showed 44% when it powered up. I'm in line for the 6s battery replacement. They said it will be on the store in 2-3 weeks. I will then bring in phone. If battery replacement works we're done. If it doesn't they will give me a new phone. They ordered both the battery and the new phone at the same time.

    http://finance.yahoo.com/news/apple-store-workers-

    getting-frustrated-190720169.html

There are reports that Apple Stores are being inundated with customer complaints with regards to devices shutting down early when the battery is showing around 30% or more left - according to some Apple store employees according to Business Insider.

Apple keeps stating that this issue is just per the iPhone 6S and just a small number - however according to Business Insider Apple Store Employees are saying the issue is actually very common and it is more than just the iPhone 6S.

I personally can say my Son’s iPhone 5S has had this issue since updating to iOS 10.

It is also being reported by one Apple Genius that there weren’t enough batteries on hand to handle all the requests for replacements.

It really does look like there is more here then Apple is letting on.

    http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/ios-10-1-1-update-causing-

    iphone-battery-drain-1594001

And for the most part Apple is saying it is a hardware issue - but that is not what it appears to be when you look at the reports.  It looks to be an iOS 10 issue.

There are some posts / reports coming out now that say iOS 10.1.1 software in particular is part of the issue.

I wonder if all of these releases of 3 betas in 8 days are also focused on this issue.

I will be updated my son’s iPhone 5S to the new Beta 6 and will see what happens. Right now it is fully charged.

I will see later on how it is doing.

From Mark Jarvis in the Tii Google+ community

    quote

I have an iPhone 6s and it is probably entitled to a battery swap, but I believe the problem is software! It only started happening since the ios version 10 happened. Why aren't Apple doing something about it?

It might be too late for some of you when you hear this - but Apple from Dec 5th to Dec 11th is having their Free hour of Code Workshops at all 487 apple retail stores worldwide.

quote Among the most popular events at the Apple Store®, Hour of Code workshops teach the basics of computer science with Code.org’s programming tutorials. Apple and Code.org share the goal of giving every student the opportunity to learn computer science.  unquote

A big part of this years hour of code will include an introduction to Swift playgrounds.  Which you have heard me sing the praises of earlier this year.

    http://www.macrumors.com/2016/11/30/tim-cook-airpods-email/

One thing you are not yet too late for is the Apple Air Pods - as well they are still not for sale.  Despite lots of rumors for the past 6 weeks that it was going to be tomorrow whenever today was during that 6 weeks.  But tomorrow has yet to come for the AirPods - but one rumor posted up on MacRumors - is from a supposed email exchange with Tim cook and an average joe consumer.

Joe Consumer wrote to Tim quote

"Give us a release date. I really bought in to the wireless vision you painted. Now I'm stuck waiting with my EarPods but can't charge my 7 at the same time which I need to do at work. Let us know if it's a month or 6 months, because then I'll just buy some other wireless headphones.”

    unquote

    Tim replied back with quote

"Thanks for your note. Sorry for the delay---we are finalizing them and I anticipate we will begin to ship over the next few weeks."

    unquote

MacRumors says the email headers look legit - but yeah faking that is not tuff.  And Mac Rumors pretty much says as much.

Said email exchange happened the last week of November.

So that means Tomorrow could actually be tomorrow or maybe the next day or the day after that or - well - look for a push notification from the Tii App when the AirPods finally go on sale.  Hopefully they will be here in time to make a nice Christmas gift.

    15:57

Regarding the listener who noticed the Apple Clock App no longer displays seconds - and a desire to set clocks to the actual second...

My suggestion is to skip adding another "uni-tasker" App to your home screen. I use a website: time.is

It is mobile friendly and displays exact time with running seconds. You can use the Safari app and keep the page in your timeline without adding another icon. But if you like one-touch access then you can add that page to the home screen.

As always- keep the good work going with all things iOS...

    Cheers,

    Hi Rob,

     Enjoy the show as always.

My favorite clock app is Grand Clock by Ansette LLC. This universal app gives you the look and sound of a grandfather clock.

Visually, you can zoom in on the face of the clock, including second hand, or zoom out to see the whole clock including swinging pendulum.

My favorite aspect is the sound. When the app is focused you hear the ticking of a real grandfather clock. The developer says all sounds are recordings of a real grandfather clock and they certainly sound that way. I hate the ticking of a cheap plastic clock. Also, you can have the app sound chimes (or in my case just gongs) on the hour, half hour or quarter hour. You can also set a schedule to have it keep quiet at night.

The app costs $.99 and there is an in app purchase for additional chimes but I do not think they are at all necessary.

I know one of the arguments against needing the largest storage or large storage is you can store a lot in iCloud.  Which can be fine as long as you have a good internet connection and you know iCloud is working. Which for part of December 5th it was not.  If you were having issues with iCloud on the 5th it was not you it was Apple.

I know this first hand because I have one spread sheet I keep up on iCloud and edit from multiple devices all the time.  And I ran into this issue mid stream working on it.

Luckily I had other things to work on during the outage - but if it was a time I needed it ASAP - it would have been really frustrating.  This Teaches me to pull an off line copy of that spread sheet each week just in case and reminds me once again why I like to have large storage devices.

    https://www.theinformation.com/fitbit-to-buy-pebble

All of you that have a pebble - some sad news - FitBit is buying Pebble and supposedly phasing it out - this according to an article on The Information - which was widely re-reported.

It was purchased for a quote small amount unquote.

According to The article the deal will have Pebble and its products closed down over time - with Fitbit really doing the acquisition for assets which include intellectual property and software.

In 2015 watch maker Citizen was supposedly trying to purchase Pebble for $740 million.  The deal fell through.  Then before the Pebble 2 launched - Intel made an offer for $70 million - The CEO of Pebble refused both offers sources say.  Sources are now saying the current deal was for between $34 and $40 million barely covering their debts.

It is sad news - I really liked my Pebble watch.  We still have it and my kids use it now.

Some will say it was the Apple watch that killed Pebble - others will say it is a tanking in the Smartwatch market.

I would say it really is about smartwatch sales tanking for any smartwatch not called the Apple Watch.

In any case good bye Pebble it was nice knowing you - say hello to Blackberry, Rio and the Nomad Jukebox when you get to that Tech Pasture in the sky.

Thanks to Dr. John for this next one.

Remember when tech futurists thought the sky would be full of Drones delivering packages from Amazon.  Well now it looks like those drones might actually be working for Apple and there trying to Make Apple Maps Better.

Seem Apple secured approval from the FAA to use drones to capture photos, videos and other traffic data according to Bloomberg.

They feel that Drones could replace lots of the Minivans Apple currently uses to collect Street data.

Look up in the sky - is it a bird - is it a plane - is it underdog -  nope it just a little ole lovable Apple Drone.

    android-phones-infected/index.html

CNN had one of those - I am glad I do an iOS podcast articles.  It was titled - Nearly One Million Android Phones infected by Hackers.

    According to the article

    quote

Hackers have gained access to more than 1.3 million Google accounts -- emails, photos, documents and more -- by infecting Android phones through illegitimate apps.

    unquote

To which Google confirmed to CNN the nature and extent of the problem.

So basically they said - yup - sounds about right.

What I love about this hack however is what the infected devices and by devices I mean Android Phones.

    Quote

Infected Android smartphones begin to install other, legitimate Android apps -- then rate them highly. This fraudulently inflates their reputation,

    unquote

So if you download an android app in an unofficial app store and it infects your android device - your android device then goes and starts downloading apps from the legit app store and gives them higher ratings.  BRILLIANT.

Google has stated they removed Apps they found to benefit from this.  But what if the hackers were actually counting on that - and they would boost the app that is a competitor of the app they are working for - then the competitors app gets removed clearing the path for their real client to benefit.  I mean it is possible right.

Looking at some of 85+ apps found and removed a few were:

    memory booster

    memory booste

    Memory Booster

    System Booster

    Minibooster

    phone booster

    1. Seems if like they might be boosting multiple apps with similar features.  Nice End game Hackers.

In any case yup - glad I do an iOS podcast.

    http://venturebeat.com/2016/12/05/android-nougat-

    hits-0-4-adoption-after-3-months/

Speaking Android - Androids latest OS is version - 7.0 and has the nick name - Nougat.

My dyslexia was kicking in and I kept reading it as Naught - not Nougat - I even said to myself why did Google go away from Candy names that is strange - then I finally - and I mean as in last month finally realized it was Nougat not Naught.   And well I was initially thinking it was my dyslexia that caused the name issue that is until I saw what Nougat’s adoption rate has been.  It was released in August 2016 before iOS 10 which was released in September 2016.

iOS 10.x has an adoption rate of over 63 % at the end of November 2016 according to Apple.

Nougat has an adoption rate in the beginning of December 2016 of 0.4% - and if you rounded it to no decimal places - that would be 0% .

So maybe Naught was actually the correct way to read Nougat after all.

At least for the mean time I can keep calling it Android Naught.

    VOICEMAIL - Chris_DeBro_issues_with_256GB

A quick tip for those running iOS 10.  If you are ever in the Message app and typing a message and go from portrait to landscape mode and you get that screen where you can do handwriting.  But you really just wanted the keyboard an wish it would stop giving your the handwriting option.  Simple enough - in the lower right tap the keyboard and back to keyboard you go - with the lower right now having a button to handwriting.  So going forward you will have the keyboard back as default. My son was asking how to get rid of that - so figured others would have that question as well and I can’t see I ever talked about it on the show before.

DISNEY TRIP - WAITING IN LINE

    Hi Rob,

Love the show. Weird stuff on a recent trip to Paris. My SE iPhone was in my shirt pocket and off. Over 2-3 days when I opened it, the phone was in delete app mode.

I cancelled each time, but noticed that at least 5 apps HAD been deleted and most were Apple apps.

Maps, Video, and Podcast were removed and I never gave ok. I had to reinstall after I figured out they were gone.

Just curious how this could happen.

    Regards,

    Tom

    perfect-iphone-case-extra-battery-extra-memory

This week for a kickstarter project I had a few of you send in this one.  It is called Perfect iPhone Case - Extra Battery, Extra Memory & More

Umm - Yeah - nice pithy name.

This one has a goal of $30k - it has raised $10k and has until Friday December 30th at 12:00 PM CT to get the other $20k.

They have versions of this case for iPhone 6, 6S, 6+, 6S+ and 7 and 7+

What does said case do - well a few key things.

    1. Extends your battery life by up to 2X.

    2. It adds external storage - either 64 GB or 128 GB of extra storage.

    3. It has a headphone jack - for the iPhone 7 and 7+ versions.

Pricing starts at $80 for the 64GB version and $100 for the $128 GB version.  Pricing is very nice for what you get - but those prices are the super early bird pricing - so don’t delay.

If this sounds like something that you are interested in - look for

The craziest Christmas present I saw this year is the New Mac Candle.

And burning this candle it is supposed to give off the scent of a new Mac.  Which evidently is a mix of Mint, Peach, Basil, Lavender, Mandarin and Sage.

Right now it is out of stock.  It is $24 and there will be a link to it at twelvesouth.com

If you can’t wait for them to get back in stock right now they do have in stock the New Samsung Candles  - when you burn those - it just smells like your house is on fire mixed with the smell of the rubber gloves the TSA agents wear.

Oh come on  - how could I not go there.

One of the benefits of this podcast is when the kids want an app - I can just email the devs and get a promo code.  So they don’t have to spend their money.  It is my way of showing off to my Kids. Besides if you work in a bakery you bring home doughnuts for your kids, If you are a cop well you bring him doughnuts for your kids.  And if you do an iOS podcast - you don’t get doughnuts you get apps.

But I need to teach the kids there is always a price - and one game my Kids received a promo code for in October and they are still playing is Toca Kitchen 2.  First - here is the Review from my youngest son - Porter.

    VOICEMAIL - Toca Kitchen 2

But hey both kids are playing this game - and Henry put together a screen cast video of him playing Toca Kitchen 2 - which he uploaded to his youtube channel.  Link in the show notes to that video review.

Thanks to the devs for the promo code - and for my son’s for doing their reviews.  And again both are still playing the app almost 2 months later - that means it is a good app.

    Hi, Rob,

About eight years ago I wrote you about my iPhone 3 (yes, 3). It was after the iPhone 4 came out and you encouraged me to upgrade my phone.

Well, I went Android instead (bigger screen, more flexibility, etc.) and my Samsung was OK. I dropped it two stories while trying to go out on the roof of the Montgomery County courthouse (I'm a reporter). I used my insurance to have it replaced and finally, the charging port went bad on my second Samsung.

About that time Samsung pulled the Note 7 and a few reports hinted the same issue could affect other smartphones. OK, I was not a fan boy so I started looking again at the iPhone.

I didn't want to go with the iPhone 7 and found a great deal on an iPhone 6 SE at AT&T. I love it! Glad to be back and last night subscribed to your podcast once again.

    Thanks for all you do.

    Hi Rob,

My Apple Watch (Gen 1) was bricked by Watch OS 3.1. The watch had Apple Care.

When I took the watch to my local Apple Store; they would not swap it out but instead sent it to their local repair depot with an expected turnaround of 5-10 days. Unlike iPhones that can be swapped out when required, apparently Apple Watches aren't. That surprised me, and the Apple employee sheepishly agreed with my disappointment. So, I'm out a week without my watch all because of the update.

Just wanted you to know this policy (if you didn't already).

    Hi Rob

I have a question or rather a problem with voicemail on my iPhone. I have an iPhone 7 with iOS 10.1.1 on Verizon. My problem is that I get my voicemail and when I tap on the voicemail to listen to it will attempt to start play the voicemail and then stop or it will start playing the voicemail and then stop after a few seconds.  I have reset network settings and also restarted my phone which did not solve the problem. Have you or any of your listeners had a similar it and if so what did they do to fix it. Thanks for your help.

    Regards,

    Howard
