Hi_Rob,
I figured with all the Pebble talk I'd make this. I took this the day I got my pebble. I used "Instagram" on my iPhone 4S to take the pic and "Over" on my 5S to apply the Tii branding.

Transcript for Episode 293
-----------------------------------
It is good to be back from the Holidays and LasVegas where I attended and spoke at NMX - the New Media Expo - and Also attended as Press at CES. This Episode I am going to play a bunch of small interviews / recordings I did with some of the Vendors I talked with at CES. It was actually pretty fun to run into some of the Developers of crowd funded projects we have talked about on this show in the past. Well fun in most of the cases. There was one I went up to and he totally blew me off - and then I looked at the show notes and I saw where I was not exactly supportive of his project saying something like I could not see why it was needed - Awkward. But the rest of the face to face meetings were fine. If you heard the supplemental interview I did with Seymor from Thingcharger - that was definitely one of the fun ones. And I almost did not get a chance to do that as I mentioned on the supplemental episode - as it was done at an evening event on Tuesday called Showstoppers - that is where the press is invited in to meets with a select group of vendors. They serve some great food and have an open bar. This is by invite only - which I was invited .. .. I showed them the email at the desk - and they said - Yup that is a good invite and they let me in. And let me tell you the food was great - but more importantly - I was able to make many of the interviews / recordings you hear on this episode.
But before we get into those - I want to review and give feedback of my setup at the shows. First - I had my new Pebble with me. And I have to say - I was thinking the Pebble was going to be an ok to neat item to have. But after this trip - I now think it is a must have can't live without item to have. I can say I love my Pebble - Thanks honey for getting it for me for Christmas. It saved me so much time trying to pull out my iPhone to see who called or texted or emailed. And each time I did not have to pull out my phone - meant one less time / chance of me dropping and breaking the phone. Additionally on the drive back from the airport I received a text and saw it on my pebble - it was a very important text from someone that said call me as soon as you can. Which I then had siri make a call to - all without having to take my phone out of my pocket or take my eyes off the road. well other than glancing at my pebble to start with. And that allowed me to call that person and get some good tips and warnings about a call I was going into as soon as I got home. So right there the pebble saved my bacon so to speak.
The next big highlight of my trip was the battery case I was using it was the ODOYO CASE called the Power+Shell EX - it is a 2,200 MA case which is much larger than the standard 1,700 to 1,800 ma cases out there. And one of the biggest capacity ones I have seen. I used it all the time I was not doing recordings - and at the end of the day - every day - when I got back to my hotel room - the battery % of my iPhone 5S was at - - - - 100%. That included the last night when I played in a poker tournament for 7 1/2 hours until 2:30 AM in the morning. Even then my iPhone was still at 100%. The battery pack did not once run all the way down. It was amazing. I can not recommend the case highly enough for those looking for a solid 24 Hours+ of charge and usage - this will do the trick. The only down side with the case is once you snap it shut around the iPhone it is a major PITA to get open to get the iPhone out of. Make sure you keep a dime on you at all times to pry it apart - if you are like me and needing to do some recordings - and put it in another case for the recordings.
As I mentioned I did not use it when I was doing recordings - so while at Showstoppers - I took it out of the ODOYO CASE - and put it in the Ballistic Tough Jacket Maxx Case - Which the Fine folks at the Ballistic Booth set me up with again this year. Actually this is the 3rd Ballistic case they have set me up with - and I have to say they keep getting better looking. The Tough Jacket Maxx is a nice mix of Black with white trim and it is rated for a 7 Ft drop -
and for my use it is perfect at the bottom of the case to plug in the iRig Mic Cast Mic. Additionally and this is important - All the buttons - volume and power buttons work great with this case. Some times cases make pushing the buttons tough - but Ballistic did a great job in this area and pushing the buttons is as easy if not more so then when there is no case. Kudos to them.
So now for my day to day use I have the Ballistic Tough Jacket Maxx Case - but any time I plan on leaving the house for any extended period - I will use the ODOYO Power+Shell EX case. Those are my two current recommendations when you are looking for protection or when you are looking for lasting longer. Which when I say it like that kinda sounds like I am doing a commercial for Trojan and Durex.
And with that said - why don't we get into some of these recordings - which were done using the BossJock App and the aforementioned iRig Mic Cast Mic. Note they were recorded in a very noisy environment - so keep that in mind when listening - but still given the surroundings - I think the mic did a very good job.

Hi Rob,
On a previous episode a listener was looking for a emoticron app.
This is not necessary.
Under settings/general/keyboards, add another keyboard language called "emoji" and then it will a globe icon will show up on the keyboard. Press the globe to toggle back and forth.

Next up is a recording with STM - they are the make of one of my absolute favorite items - my Velo 2 Laptop bag - which I have mentioned before on the show multiple times - and I mention again in this interview. Here we go.
PLAY RECORDING - ETHAN NYHOLM STM BAGS
I have a link in the show notes to the Velo 2 Bag from STM if you are looking for a new laptop bag - I really can not recommend it more highly - it is the best laptop bag I have ever had and I am a laptop bag snob. I really wish I had this when I was traveling all over the world every other week. Of course back then I had a blackberry and scroll wheel iPod to go with my Titanium Power book plus a portable GPS and a digital Camera. Now it is just the iPhone and a Powerbook.
PLAYVOICEMAIL - MIKE_CA_APP_REVIEW_SKTCHY
Hey Rob I just finished Episode 292 and I took Josh's recommendation of turning on Reduce Motion (turning parallax off) and I couldn't believe it. Even with my hands being beat up at work my Touch ID works about 98% of the time now compared to probably less than 20% before.
This is one of the reasons I love this show and the community of people that follow it.
Oh and I shared your page on Facebook.
Thanks for doing what you do!

Hey Rob,
Ever since I got my new iPhone 5s I've had a problem with the fingerprint reader. I took it back and got a new one and still have the same problem. I thought it might be due to the cold weather and my dry skin. I tried using hand lotion and nothing worked. On your last show you had a Caller call in with the same problem and he recommended going to settings, accessibility and turn on reduce motion. Hey what great advice it worked. Thanks so much for your show it's awesome keep up the great work.

Hi Rob,
Thanks for the promo code for the iBook - Transforming your photos from simply ordinary to sensationally stunning. Most of my family is into photography as a hobby and I am trying to get into it as well. after reading this ibook I clearly understand how to make some awesome photo's but it is definitely going to take some practice.

I want to take a minute now to talk about today's sponsor. And that is Hover - if you go to hover.com and use the promo code TIICES one word as a new user you can get 10% off your domain name registrations.
I can say having registered domains names at a few other services in the past - Hover is with out a doubt my favorite site to register and manage domains and where I manage all my domains now. The interface is so drop dead simple - it is not cluttered it is not insulting your senses and it is not trying to up sell you with confusing links and additional screens that make no sense.
Hover just presents the info you need and that is it. And then when it is time to manage your domains and add redirects - it is so easy and fast to do.
And they also make it simple and cheap to transfer domains from other registers to Hover. Just $10 for all domain transfers sans .co domains.
And if their tutorials on transferring domains is not your thing - they have a number you can call and speak to them as in speak to a real person and they will take care of the entire tansfer - just go to hover.com and in the upper right you will see the 1-866 number. mention you heard about them on this show and mention promo CODE TIICES to save 10% on your registrations. When you call that number they will help you transfer over all your domains from any of those other guys and then going forward you will have one nice easy to use interface to add redirects and manage your domains.
Remember the promo code TIICES for new users of hover to save 10% on your purchases.
Isn't it time for you to like registering domain names again. Thanks Hover for supporting this show.

And I want to thank SAMSON for supplying me with a Metor Mic to test out. I will be testing it with regards to recording right into an iOS device - for those looking to podcast right from an iOS device. By the way I did do my presentation at NMX on how to podcast 100% from an iOS device - and you can find the full slide deck - all 130 slides at ipadtutorial dot libsyn dot com - Again I will be testing out the metor mic in the near future - and will mention it here and on podcast411 and also on the Feed. Thanks to the folks at Samson for supplying that sample and for taking the time to talk about their mics in general.

Next up is the app and service - Tripit - one word.
PLAY RECORDING - JILL TRIPIT
Yeah - that service would have been very helpful for me when I was trying to get out to Vegas - my initial flight was supposed to be at 4:00 PM on Friday - I arrived at the airport at 2:00 PM - the flight was finally canceled at 9:00 PM and by the time I found a replacement flight it was close to 10:00 PM and well $1,100 more dollars as I needed to go on another airline. I made it home at 11:00 PM - only to have to get up at 3:00 AM for my flight -and of course one of my friends called me at 1:00 AM saying hey I just arrived in Vegas want to get something to eat. In fairness to him he had no idea I was not in Vegas at that time. Anyway - Seems like Tripit might have helped me a bit on this trip.

Hi Rob
My buddy sent me an article about how the NSA has a way to gain access to iPhones.
Thought you might be interested.
Regards,
~Brian F
Per the article - the NSA needs to get physical access of your device to get the software on it.
"The documents suggest that the NSA needs physical access to a device to install the spyware"
So unless you feel the NSA has some specific reason they need to get your phone and put spyware on it - I would not worry at all.
And FYI - they have spyware they can add to any other phone that does the same thing.
This story is a just some people trying to scare iPhone owners.
IMO - Nothing to see here - move along - move along.
http://www.nuevue.com
One thing at CES - I did get a bunch of products to test out - and one of them is a case for my wifes iPad from Nuevue - which will lets play the recording to learn more about.
PLAY RECORDING - NUEVUE
Now I should point out this is really not a case as much as it is a sleeve - you slide in your iOS device and then slide it out - and the screen has been cleaned. Right now my wife is testing out an STM case for her iPad mini - but after we do a review on that - she will test out the Nuevue sleeve - spelled - N U E V U E - for those that like sleeves - this does look to offer up a nice feature in not just cleaning the screen of finger prints and smudges but also of germs. More about this on a future episode.
PLAY VOICEMAIL - JIM_CHI_ISSUE_IOS7_MUSIC
Thanks to all that sent in links to the article about a company that did online brain teasers and said the results showed iPhone users are smarter than users of other brands. Except - when you look at the testing methodology and what they were testing - it really was not about who was smarter but rather about which OS had the easier to use UI. See the test was not judging how many correct answers - but how fast you got the correct answers.
I of all people love to kick Android when ever I can - but I think in this case it is not about the users as much as the UI.
So I guess I can kick Android - just not Android users - which really I don't like to kick Android users - I prefer to just feel sorry for them for being well you know Android users. And no THIS test does not prove they are dumber than iOS users.

Next up is a recording with someone we mentioned when it was a kickstarter project back some time ago. It was at the time called the Juice Tank - but now is called the Prong PocketPlug.
Here is the recording.
PLAY RECORDING - PRONG JUICE TANK
Thanks to the guys at Prong for setting me up with a case to test out. Which I will be reviewing on a future episode of the show. This is for sale now by going to go prong dot com - link in the show notes.
These guys are the main reason I went over to the Venetian actually the only reason I went over - and I really am glad I did for multiple reasons - one I found the indiegogo area - where their were a bunch of crowd funded projects a couple of which I will not play now as they have not launched - but will get up those recordings when they do. But more importantly - I met the folks from Indiegogo - and hopefully that will lead to Tii being a media partner with them - getting us some prototype units to review and advanced notice of new indiegogo projects that are iOS related. So very good thing I went over there. Additionally after I finished up - it is where I like to play poker and I got one tournament in and as I mentioned I played a long time over 7 1/2 hours finishing in the mone y in 5th place out of over 70 players - finally going out with my pocket kings to pocket aces. Which 5 handed just should not happen. Oh well. Overall though a good visit to the venetian.

Hi Rob,
I travelled away from home with my family during the Christmas holiday and stayed in a couple of hotels. I brought my Apple TV along, hoping to use it to watch Netflix and stream homemade movies from my iPad.
Unfortunately, both hotel wifi networks required acceptance of a user agreement through a web browser. The Apple TV has none. Is there a way around this?
I connected the iPad into the hotel TV's HDMI port instead through the Digital AV cable and that worked perfectly.
Regards,
Kevin C

And finally with the recorded interviews for this episode is an interview I did with a company that has gotten some press of late - being it is funded by Ryan Secrest - and that is the Typo Keyboard - they also got some press because Blackberry is giving them some legal headaches over the look of their keyboard - but I think that is well poppy cock and did not even bring it up in the interview.
Here is that recording.
PLAY RECORDING - TYPOKEYBOARDS
I can say seeing it in person it definitely looked better then in pictures. Sadly no sample on this one to test out. But I am sure we will be hearing more about this in the coming months - hopefully not just because of the issues with Blackberry.
You can pre-order this now at $99 and it is showing as shipping in January. It is for the iPhone 5 and 5S. And if you are a power user of the iPhone for Texting and emails - this is something you might want to look into. Sadly this is just for Portrait mode typing - not for anything in landscape mode.
I want to thank all the OEM's that took the time to talk with us at CES - I have a few other recordings some for kickstarter projects I am waiting to launch - that will go up in future episodes. And next episode we will get back to our more normal format - but I think CES was an interesting show with some neat products. I'll have more to talk about in the future.
One of most out there products I saw with the Yellow Jacket - which is an iPhone Case / charger and stun gun all in one. Yeah - can't see anything bad coming out of this one. Hey if you live somewhere where you think you need a stun gun case for your iPhone - you might just want to think of moving. Surprisingly a stun gun is only illegal in a handful of states - with a few more being questionable - and the vast majority saying stun gun to hearts content being perfectly legal. Well as long as you don't use it maliciously.
Overall At CES there were a lot - as in way to many Bluetooth speakers - which were only eclipsed by the plethora of iPhone Cases - which was actually surpassed by the number of e-cigarettes. Luckily that later one I had not interest in.
I did get some other products to test out - a stylus from Jot and some others. A cool Watt meter and more - again for future episodes one I get some testing done.
If you went to CES - and I know a few of you did - Please let me know what your favorite items were.

Hi rob,
Happy New Year to you! Here’s to more awesome TII content in 2014.
Is there a way to hide app updates, as you would for purchases? There are a few apps that run great just the way they are and the developer has either disappeared or broken VoiceOver accessibility, or both. I was able to restore older versions back to my liking, but would not like to have the update in the cue anymore, forcing me to individually update all other apps. And yes, until there is a way to willingly downgrade (seems unlikely) I have automatically install updates turned off.
Regards,
chelsea
You know chelsea - I have often wished for the same thing - an option on your iOS device in the app store app that says - refuse update or decline update or pause updates or something similar - but I do not see that option available - That said just because I don't see it available does not mean it is not hidden somewhere - so if anyone more in tune with this issue knows of a solution to pick and choose apps you don't want to update - please let us know - 206-666-6364 - thats 206-moon-dog or send an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com - but sadly I think this one right now there is no solution to. But I hope I am wrong.
Hi Rob,
I got my iPhone5 on sept 20th 2013 and I'd like to upgrade next month with my taxes I'm pretty sure I can do that if I pay the 299$ for the 5s my question is will the 5 then be unlocked cuz this phone still has well over a year to go till the contract is up. Merry Christmas regards Aaron in Vermont.
Hi Aaron - most likely not - not if you are on a solo contract and jumping to another carrier to get that $299 price - because with your current carrier you are not likely going to qualify for that $299 price. Not having just purchase the iPhone 5 back in September. But really it all depends on your carrier and what you wind up paying for the iPhone 5S - if you pay full price and then do a two year agreement for the 5S - you should then get the 5 unlocked. But again - check with your current carrier and get it in writing before doing anything.
Ok - a few of you sent in links to different articles about this next story which I can sum up in two words - SELL OUT
Really How else to you describe what Tony Fadell at NEST is. Oh sure Rob you say - if Google dangled 3.2 Billion with a B dollars in front of you - you would sell out to. Duhh. I did not say he was dumb - or wrong - just that he is a sell out. For those not familiar with Tony Fadell he is not just the CEO of NEST but was also one of the original designers of the original iPod. So he just sold out to the enemy. I guess the real shame on this should be on Apples part for not buying NEST when they had a chance - which would have been any time over the past couple of years - as NEST has been available in the Apple stores for some time now. Guess they just to busy giving money back to the investors they could not spare any to buy NEST - JUST SAYIN
Thanks to Binh for this next one - Seems there are some issues with Galaxy S4's - well no not the issues about spontaneous combustion and then blackmail to get a replacement unit - but those contributed no doubt to this issue - which is lack of sales - or more accurately much lower sales numbers than expected. Seems the Korean Press is shocked at the sales miss. In the 4th quarter they were expect to sell 7 mil units a month - and now estimates are putting that at half that number. Oppppsss. Can't say I am broken hearted by the news.
Thanks again to our sponsor Hover dot com - remember for new users use promo code TiiCES one word to get 10% off your purchase. Hover is who I manage all my domains with and I really do love their service and recommend them even when they are not advertising on the show. Again use promo code TIICES to save 10% when you first purchase a domain name with Hover.
If you want to know when new episodes go up - look at the Tii app - not just the best way to consume the show - but also a great way to get a push message when a new episode goes live or there is other iOS breaking news. Just $2.99 in the app store - it helps you get the most out of the show and it helps support the show at the same time - plus it makes it really easy to email or call the show with your feedback. Again just search for Tii in the iTunes app store.
And Before we go today I want to remind you to send in your feedback to the show - 206-666-6364 - that 206-moon-dog - or record your feedback and email it to the show at today in iOS at gmail dot com - The feedback can be a question or comment per something someone said on this episode or it can be a question or rant you have about something else. An App or product review - good or bad - as long as it is iOS related - it is welcomed. I am always looking for new Artwork to feature that you created on an iOS device - just put some Tii branding on it and send it in. And of course we are always looking for more music created on an iOS device to play on the show. This is your show and your feedback is greatly desired. And don't forget to check out our new Moderated Google Plus community by going to todayinios dot com slash community.
And that folks is going to do it for us today.
