Hi, Rob.
I thought you might like some fall New England color for your next episode.
I took this photo the week of October 13 using the "ProCam 2" app on my iPhone 5S. After editing it a bit using the ProCam app, I then brightened up specific regions of the picture using the "Snapseed" app. The "Over" app gave me the ability to give the photo your Tii branding.
Regards,

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote “If the market spits up Apple and Android devices for their inability to meet business user needs, RIM stands alone—or will, on Jan. 30, 2013 and the days that follow the BlackBerry 10 launch—as the company ready to embrace them. This is an unprecedented opportunity. As a result, 2013 could be an amazing year for RIM.”
Rob Enderle, CIO, 31 Dec 2012
Yes at the end of 2012 - Mr Enderle was still thinking RIM had a chance - I could see thinking that way in 2008 and maybe even 2009 but at the end of 2012 - Yikes - Just Sayin

Fourth-Quarter-Results.html
http://images.apple.com/pr/pdf/q4fy14datasum.pdf
Apple Q3 2014 - Quarterly Report Summary:
Rev = $42.1 Billion (vs $37.5 Billion a year ago quarter and $37.4 Billion last quarter)
Total Cash = $155.2 Billion (Down $9.3 Billion for the quarter from $164.5 Billion)
Generated $13.3 Billion cash flow and returned >$20 Billion via dividends and share buy backs last quarter.
Last Quarter Sales:
iPhones Sold = 39.3 Mil (vs 33.8 Mil a year ago quarter and 35.2 Mil last quarter)
iPads Sold = 12.3 Mil (vs 14.1 Mil a year ago quarter and 13.3 Mil last quarter)
All iPod's Sold = 2.6 Mil (vs 3.5 Mil a year ago quarter and 2.9 Mil last quarter)
iPod Touches Sold = Not given as usual but over half of the 2.6 Mil iPods sold
Misc Notes:
iPhone in 69 Countries by end of October. More than 115 countries by end of December.
ApplePay is live today - Yada Yada.
Apple Watch - Early 2015
85 Billion App downloads to date
243 million iOS device sold last 12 months.
Starting the next quarterly report - iPod sales will be rolled in with Apple TV, accessories and Beats Headphones and eventually Apple Watch as well. Which was surprising for the Apple Watch - being in with others - Tim was asked about this - and said - for now Apple Watch will be with others accessories - and maybe in the future they will change - but for now Apple does not want to give out to much info to competitors about the Apple Watch.
First Question about ApplePay - so you can see what Anal-ists were interested in. NO questions about GTAT.
Talking about iPad - Tim does not see market saturated - and wants to grow iPad sales. Talked about first 4 years of sales vs first 4 for iPhone and iPad sales being greater. I don't think that is accurate and a bit mis-leading. Look at 4th chart in the PDF - and iPad sales have flatlined basically two years ago. If Apple truly wants to grown the iPad line - you might have wanted to think of adding more than just touch ID and gold color for the iPad Mini update - Just Sayin.
I actually went and charted what I think is valid comparison of the iPhone and iPad sales - what I did was look at the total of 4 quarters of sales for both devices. And when you look at then together it is very clear that by the 11th and 12th quarter of iPad sales - they went flat. FYI - there are 18 quarters of sales - meaning for the past 2 years sales are flat. The iPhone on the other had has been on sale for 31 quarters and each and every quarter - the trailing 4 quarter sales always went up. Not once has there been a drop. The iPad had its first drop in the 13th quarter. For Tim Cook to get up there and say the iPad sales are better than any other Apple product in its first 4 years is misleading. Again - if Apple really cares about iPad sales - they will need to do a bit more with regards to upgrades - especially on the iPad mini side. And if you look at the 18th quarter of sales and look back 4 quarters - the iPhone had actually sold more units than the iPad. So we really are now at a point when comparing the two product lines sales - that the iPhone will start running away with unit sales.
Ok - with all that said - Apple's numbers were very good - and unlike Google and others that keep missing their numbers - Apple actually keeps exceeding on their numbers - generating lots of money and well kicking butt and taking names financially speaking that is. And this time Wallstreet is actually rewarding them a little bit as Apple has hit new all times highs this week. Congrats to Apple and of course to all of us with Apple stock.

Hi Rob, You were right. It costs less to make the bigger iPhone. Nice call! Dr. John M
And Dr. John is talking about an article saying what I have said all along - it is harder to design a smartphone in a smaller package than it is in a larger package. And that Apples Profits for the iPhone 6 and 6+ will be greater than they were for the 5S and 5 when they were released.

http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2014/10/13iPhone-6-iPhone-
6-Plus-Arrive-in-36-More-Countries-and-Territories-This-Month.html
Hi Rob,
None of the AT&T stores in my area have an iPhone. The same is true of the RadioShack stores. This is disappointing since I was looking foreword to upgrading. Apple sure under estimated the number of iPhone 6's and 6+'s that would be needed.
Regards,
Melissa
Well that is because they are also launching all around the world. Here is where the iPhone 6 and 6Plus launched or will launch just in the second half of October:
- Friday, October 17: China, India and Monaco
- Thursday, October 23: Israel
- Friday, October 24: Czech Republic, French West Indies, Greenland, Malta, Poland, Reunion Island and South Africa
- Thursday, October 30: Bahrain and Kuwait
- Friday, October 31: Albania, Bosnia, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Guam, Hungary, Iceland, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Macau, Macedonia, Mexico, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, South Korea, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine and Thailand
As Apple said - they would have the iPhone out to 69 countries by the end of October and over 115 by the end of December. That is by far the quickest rollout ever for the iPhone. And that does mean you should expect shortages of iPhones through out the rest of 2014. It will likely be mid Q1 2015 before Apple finally hits equilibrium with supply and demand.
Hi Rob I just wanted to tell you I finally for iphone 6 plus 64gb Space Grey today. I really really love this thing words can't express the joy I'm feeling right now. It did take a while for me to get it here in Belize but I got it!! Looking forward to a new episode soon.

Good morning Rob,
I wanted to ask you if it was safe to update to 8.1 I am on 8.0 on an iPhone 5. Also, would you recommend updating an iPad 2 to 8.1? The iPad 2 is running 7.1.2. Thanks
Regards,
Jonah
Finally I can say - release the hounds. Most reports coming in are very positive about iOS 8.1 - not all perfect - but much better overall and finally an iOS update you can do. At least for the iPad 3rd gen and later and and iPhone. Per the iPad 2 - that is the one device I have seen some mixed reports on - so if anyone has done the update to 8.1 for the iPad 2 - let me know your experiences.
But for any other iOS device if you are not jailbroken - that yes release the hounds.
Ofcourse before you do so - make sure you read over my PDF in the Tii app on how to prep for the upgrade to have minimal issues.
If you tap the PDF button in the Tii App for episodes - it is the 3rd one listed - Titled Recommended Update Procedure. And it is dated Sept 14th - wow - it took a long time to finally be able to really promote that.
Hi Rob,
I was having an issue with iTunes WIFI syncing not working on iOS 8.0.2, which I believe someone else reported on one of the last couple of episodes. The day iOS 8.1 came out I decided to take the risk and update right away and it has fixed the WIFI syncing issue for me, everything else still works fine for me as it did on iOS 8.0.2. Just thought I’d share my experience with you and the listeners.
Sincerely,
Ken in Louisburg, NC.

rewards-program-to-boost-apple-pay-use.html
PLAY MESSAGE - Mike_NB_Apple_PAY_at_mcds
The biggest update in 8.1 - is the support for Apple Pay. I have to admit I only tried it once this week - at Walgreens - and it did not work for me - and no one at the Walgreens had any clue what was going on - Trained for this they were not. That said - most others are finding it worked very well.
I will say it was very easy to set up. You use the camera to scan your card and it pulls in the info. Make sure you hold it steady with two hands - The first time I was not steady and it doubled up my Middle initial. After you manually type in the security code and check all the info - you will get a confirmation code from the bank to enter. It is pretty simple to set up and pretty quick.
You know what not using it is un-acceptable - I will be right back.
Ok - I am back with a Strawberry banana fruit smoothy and a Dipped cone. Went to the local McDonalds and it was very easy - did not say anything and even went in with out my wallet. Just my keys and iPhone. Order my snacks - and then did not say anything else - a little light came on the NFC reader I laid my iPhone down on it with my thumb on the touch id - and it showed my credit card and it scanning my thumbprint and then done. Much faster then it took me to describe. And not I have a Strawberry banana smoothie to enjoy - the Dipped cone is no long since devoured.
So yes - definitely was an issue at my local walgreens.
One rumor about Apple Pay is that is reportedly building rewards program to boost Apple Pay use. This rumor states that Apple would use iBeacons to alert you to in-store deals which you only get if you pay with Apple Pay. Ok - I am going to say it - This would be a sorta Bluetooth Special . Oh - can't believe I went there. For others that don't know where there is - yeah - think K-Mart in the 80's and early 90's
More on this in the future if true.

Hi Rob:
Regarding the caller who was having phantom touches with the iphone 6.
I was having the same problem with my phone. I did some research and found this is caused by using a knock off phone charger. As soon as I plug my phone in, it would start doing random touches on the phone.
Switching to the Apple charger that came with the phone solved that problem.
I have used my car's usb port to charge the phone without any problems.
Hope that helps.

Hey Rob,
I'm forever dumbfounded whenever a new iPhone comes out at the reports of fast battery drain which, after an update (or maybe a full moon) goes away.
I found the cause and solution, at least for some of my friends.
Cause: a huge music library! After they set up the new iPhone from an iTunes backup it takes a while for the music to transfer (via iTunes Match). If they think it's all done and disconnect the cable, the songs continue to transfer via Wi-Fi on battery.
Solution: do the setup when it's convenient to leave the device connected until the transfer is complete.
I hope this helps people

Joe D
Hi Rob,
Listening to Episode 324 I can tell you are worked up over the 'waiting too long' piece. Right or Wrong - it looks like it was simply the Mac Mini announcement. Probably not the best choice...
In regards to Apple TV...I wonder if the next version will be more of an Apple iHome box. This would be a connected box that runs all the time and would be a control center for security, HVAC, lighting and also that would also provide entertainment capabilities including Video presentation. I don't see them making a TV set itself.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.
One new post in the G+ community this past week came from -
Kevin Beecher - he asked quote Hi all I updated to iOS 8.1 today and under the health app the glucose record has disappeared any one had the same issue. unquote
And Thanks to Herbert Saxman - who found a link on The Apple site explaining why they did this.
Essentially the reason Apple pulled this was because of how blood glucose is measured in different countries. Mlligrams per Deciliter vs millimoles per liter. And there was an issue with how some devices work with Heathkit - so to prevent any confusion and possible bad things leading to major lawsuits - Apple pulled that feature for now - but is working on a fix and will update shortly.
Thanks Kevin for asking on that and Herbert for finding the link.

One very new feature introduced with the iPad Air 2 that Apple did not even mention in their keynote is a pre-installed Data only SIM - that will allow you to change carriers on the go. In the US it allows you to go between AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. This means not having to decide which iPad to get - and not just being free to move from one to the other - but being able to do it at any time. No need to buy another SIM card - one SIM card that comes with the iPad and that is it.
Some Articles however I think went a little to overboard with this - saying it was the first step before Apple does the same thing for the iPhone. But there is a difference between a data only offering and once for Voice and Data. So don't expect this for the iPhone any time soon.

with-special-multi-carrier-apple-sim/
29:10
https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPad+Air+2+Teardown/30592
And speaking of something that was not mentioned about the iPad at the keynote - the iPad 2 had 2 GB of RAM. This confirmed by iFixit in their teardown. It also have a smaller battery, iPad Air 1 - was 8,827 mAh battery - the iPad Air 2 is a 7,340 mAh battery.
Bench mark tests show it is a 3 core CPU, running at 1.5 GHz. The single core speed is the best of any iOS device or Tablet not iOS for that matter as is the multi-code score. Yup the new iPad Air 2 in the benchmark tests out so far destroys all other iOS and Android devices out there now.
If you were holding off for a new iPad - the iPad Air 2 - will not disappoint. Last year it was hard to pick which iPad to recommend - this year it is very easy - iPad Air 2 is the iPad to pick if you want the best tablet. That all said - if you did buy a new iPad last year or the year before or even the year before that - it will still be tough to justify updating now. Not unless you use your iPad for work and video and image editing - then - yeah move up - but likely if you do that - you have a mac-book pro - and you are all set.
Again - tough to recommend as an upgrade to a recent iPad - but if you are in need of a new tablet - then the iPad Air 2 - will serve you well for many years into the future. However if you are just looking for something for the kids to play Minecraft and Clash of Clans on - yeah - that $249 iPad Mini will do just fine.

http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/mobiles/microsoft-officially-
ditches-nokia-brand-for-upcoming-devices-20141022-11a95x.html
Hi Rob,
Why do you think they did this?
Regards,
Dr. John M
What Dr. John is talking about is Microsoft and why did they kill off the Nokia Brand for cellphones. My thoughts are in Microsofts Mind - their brand is bigger than the nokia brand.
And well - I would agree with that.
Plus Nokia's brand really has come over the past 10+ years to mean low cost - high quantity - low quality phones.
That to me would be something MS would not want to keep on pushing forward with - not as they try to copy the Apple business model.
Plus there is still Nokia out there selling other equipment and products. So better to bring the brand control 100% under MS control by well getting rid of that they don't totally control.
Makes sense long term - little surprised it happened this quickly. But not shocked.
A little podcasting and iOS vs Android news. I finally ran the numbers for downloads from September and for mobile downloads the ratio was 6.2 to 1 - iOS vs Android downloads for ALL podcasts across libsyn. That ratio was the highest it has been in a couple of years - and I expect October to be even higher as it will be the first full month with Podcasts App being native for iOS 8.

Rob,
I just discovered a feature when you click the share icon. It should be easy to discover the ability to add share options by scrolling left and clicking 'more,' but did you know you can click and hold a share option to rearrange their order? That's super useful. I discovered it when I was adding the new Any Post app's share button (also happy about that). Same thing works for the lower row to (add a bookmark, copy, etc.)
Also, I've been wanting to share a new favorite feature in iOS 8: Now third party podcast apps can have 30 second forward & rewind in the lockscreen. I love that. It was the one thing the apple branded podcast app had as an advantage over others. It now works with downcast.

Hi Rob
I had to recently perform a full restore of my 5s and when I did the restore from an iCloud backup, I was missing artwork for some of my music. What fixed the issue was removing all music from the device and then, syncing all my music across from iTunes on my PC. Hope that helps someone else.

Hi Rob,
I found myself at the Genius bar earlier today so I thought I’d ask and this is what I found out about the batteries in the iPhone 6+ (and I presume the other iPhones as well).
They will indeed last longer if we let the charge go all the way down occasionally as opposed to keeping it plugged in almost constantly and charging it over and over when it is still at 90% and such.
However, the more powerful charger will not shorten the battery life compared to using the one that is shipped with them. So it is safe to charge your device faster this way.
Just sayin’.
Dr. John M
Dear Rob,
I am curious if you have received your SOS charger. I also "invested" in this kickstarter project and I keep asking them about when I'll receive mine, and I get the same silly note back that they are working to get the orders out.
So, just wondering if you've gotten yours and if so, what you thought about it.

Nope - Not yet. I did send them an email asking if I could get it early to review on the show - no soup for me - as that did not seem to help.

6-wallet-by-jimmycase
Hi Rob,
Here is a kickstarter project for the iPhone 6 called the JimmyCASE - Is there any point or definitely less of one for these with Apple Pay?!
Regards,
Michael
Hi Michael - thanks for the heads up on this one - and actually I think there is more a need for this. And what the JimmyCase is - is a wallet / case for your iPhone 6. And why I think there is more of a need is - that with the ability to put multiple credit cards and loyalty cards on your iPhone and with ApplePay - there is less and less need for just a wallet - but you still need to cary cash and maybe you need that Gym membership card - if for no other reason than to put in the door in the locker room so you can remove the key. Plus you still need to carry your drivers license. So being able to cary those last few cards, your ID and cash in the case for your iPhone eliminates the need for that bulge in your pants - also known as your wallet.
Per the JimmyCase - they had a modest goal of $5k - and are over $7k - so this one is funded. You have until Tuesday November 4th at 1:58 AM CT to fund it. Pricing for the jimmy case is $25.
There description is quote iPhone 6 Stretchy Wallet Case By jimmyCASE - Elastic Pocket, Genuine Mahogany Wood Core And Silicone Bumper Handmade In Los Angeles. unquote

http://www.lantronix.com/it-management/xprintserver/xprintserver.html
I have the XPrintServer that was sent to me to test out - it allows you to print from Any iOS device to Any USB printer. And I was going to have a review for you this week on that - but those Darn Royals and the world series - so I am going to go over it on the next show - plus I need to go and buy ink for my USB printer. But some had ask about a good way to print from an iOS device - and the XprintServer from Lantronix is a great way to make any of your current printers iOS compatible.
Also I just on Saturday finally got my Wife set up on my iPhone 5S - and this is really going to be for her - but I will explain more about that on the next episode.
Yes - My Wife is using an iPhone - she finally gave up her Blackberry. I know - the guy with the first podcast about the iPhone took 7 1/2 years to get his wife to give up her tactile keyboard for an iPhone. Per how she is doing - lets say she is not the best with change and I will leave it at that for now. She is also not the most gentle with her phones - so really I was not pushing too hard. But I did just get RhinoShield for the 5S - to put on her phone to go along with the Ballistic case. The combo - knock on wood will be enough to keep her 5S safe or at least safer.
Sadly - I do not yet have an iPhone 6+ case to report on - as a few people sent me cases to test out - all sent iPhone 6 cases - well except for the one that sent a 5S case.

Now that I can recommend iOS 8 - it is time to start mentioning some articles that will help you get more out of iOS 8. One is an article I really like from Techblog.tv - which is titled - Full list of Siri commands.
First up it goes over how to define some relationships - like what you want Siri to call you. Such as Call me Rob or Call me Supreme Galactic Overlord or Call me Your Daddy. But I think Call me Rob is fine for me.
You can tell siri who your relatives are. My Brother is Yada yada, My Boss name is Yada Yada, My husband is and so on.
You can Ask siri to Search contacts, or make a phone call or FaceTime call. As you learned recently - you can even have siri send a tweet. And much much much more - Look for the link titled Full list of Siri commands in the show notes for Ep 325. And this list is updated for new siri commands with iOS 8

ipads-keyboard-heres/
Hi Rob,
Here is an article about changing out of the native keyboard on the iOS 8. Since many millions will be considering doing this, I thought I’d pass it along to you and wonder what keyboards your listeners have opted for and what feedback they can provide about the various keyboard replacement options.
Also, I’d appreciate your opinion about concerns over privacy and security compromise by using a 3rd-party keyboard. Seems that by opting to replace the native Apple keyboard you are agreeing to allow the third-party developer to access EVERYTHING you type on their keyboard including credit card numbers, passwords etc.
Your thoughts?
Regards,
Dr. John M
Thanks Dr. John for this article - which is titles - iOS 8 - lets you replace your Keyboard - here's how.
And this is one I sat on for a bit - just waiting for the episode I could recommend iOS 8 - and that time is now - and one of the best new features in iOS 8 is the ability to add in 3rd party keyboards - but as you mention that new feature comes with this warning as you go to install a new keyboard - Quote Allow full access for Yada Yada Keyboards? Full access allows the developer of this keyboard to transmit anything you type, including things you have previously typed with this keyboard. This could include sensitive information such as your credit card number or street address unquote - then a Don't allow or allow option. Yikes - does that sound ominous or what. So you are faced with a decision - better keyboard and less privacy or more privacy and just the stock keyboard.
If your phone is for work - you may want to check with your IT department before you install that 3rd party keyboard. Especially if you deal with sensitive info at work.
The good news is in iOS 8 - the stock keyboard now gives suggested words above the keyboard - if you are not seeing this - at the top of the keyboard - in the center - you should see a little white line about the T and Y key - swipe up on that to see the predictive word section. If you get good at using that - you will see you typing times really increase.
But for those looking to try out a 3rd party keyboard - this article goes over - Swiftkey which is Free, Swype and fleshy - both 1 buck and minuum which is $4.
Great article - Thanks Dr. John for the heads up on this.
And folks - let me know which 3rd party keyboards you have settled in on - now that iOS 8 is finally up to prime time.

Hi Rob,
First, your comments on Bend-duh-Gate were awesome. Amazing what happens when non geeks try and interpret numbers. It’s just physics, people! (And I have a right to say that because I actually study physics). Anyway, great tip on putting the phone in your pocket the other way. I don’t plan to upgrade, as my iPad needs an upgrade more. A new battery in my 5 will almost turn it into a brand-new phone. Though I wonder if there are any non visual ways to tell if your phone has accidentally been bent? Hmmm.
I just installed iOS 8 last week and have a question: Have you found difficulties getting “Hey Siri” to work when your iPhone is in a dock? I usually dock my iPhone to charge it and was disappointed when Siri didn’t answer me from across the room. I have an adapter connected to my dock and my iPhone sitting on the desk in an otterbox Commuter case. Feature seems to work fine when plugged into a regular power outlet and still having the case on, so I’m not sure what variable is at work here. Inverse square law can’t be that difficult here, as I’m only talking dorm room separations.
Thanks for all the awesome iOS 8 advice! Can’t wait for 8.1 and some of those bugs to be squashed!
Regards,
Chelsea

Been listening for a while now and love the show. I'm getting fibre installed at home soon and was wondering what feedback good or bad you and fellow listeners can give about the Apple AirPort Extreme. My main concern is the lack of a proper firewall as it will be connected directly to the internet.
Any help appreciated
Regards,

Hi Rob,
Are you aware of any reasons why when I set up Photo Library in the Cloud on my iPad, approximately 100 of my pictures that appear on my iPhone do not appear on my iPad?
Also, is it possible to import "Faces" albums from iPhoto on Mac to my iOS devices?
Thanks,
Jonathan from New Orleans

http://www.redmondpie.com/pangu-ios-8-ios-8.1-jailbreak-for-
iphone-6-6-plus-5s-ipad-air-2-and-all-other-devices-released/
Last year we had to wait until this year to finally jailbreak - but this year it is looking like we will not need to wait until next year to jailbreak - or even next month - although you should wait until next month - really.
When Pangu released the jailbreak earlier this week initially they caught everyone off guard including it seemed Saurik as Cydia was not iOS 8 ready - but that has been updated - and Cydia is iOS 8 ready.
Now the bad news - if you are on a Mac - No soup for You - as the jailbreak tools are just available for Windows users - right now at least.
I really don't want to get into this more at this time. As always I will say - wait a couple of weeks on this - usually new jailbreaks tend to get multiple updates right away. If you are on iOS 7.1.2 and jailbroken - wait - stay where you are. If you are on iOS 8.1 and not jailbroken - first figure out all you like about iOS 8.1 - and in a couple of weeks think about jailbreaking.
More on future episodes. And if you did jailbreak - what issues are you having if any?

Hi Rob,
Per the Oct 16th event tag line its been way too long.
I like to think it referred to the long awaited MacMini upgrade, and not the Apple TV. Not very important to you I guess, really important to me (and that's what counts after all. :) :)
Thanks for the show and best regards.
Nick T
Fair point - it is not just about iOS.
