This week we have promo codes for The App - HOME PWS - Here is the written review from the dev.
You turn on the evening news and the weather report shows the temperature and current weather conditions at the nearest Airport. That's great but, the thing is, most people don't live near an Airport. Weather conditions can often vary significantly across a small area, meaning that what is happening at the Airport is likely not the same as where you live!
Home PWS is an application designed to access current weather conditions from personal weather stations from all over the world!
The application will also benefit current Weather Underground* PWS owners who can easily check their home stations while on the go.
Features:
- displays current weather conditions for nearby or known stations for anywhere in the World, including temperature, dewpoint, "feels like" temperature, 24-hour temperature change, wind speed & direction, pressure and trends, precipitation in the last hour, daily total precipitation, solar radiation, UV index, soil temperature, soil moisture, and leaf wetness;
- a daily almanac showing the maximum and minimum temperatures for the day, peak wind speed and gust, as well as specific hourly-averaged temperatures and wind speeds (morning, afternoon, and evening);
- a graphical display of the data with 4x zoom so you can more closely examine the data;
- supports stations with webcams for live viewing on the go!
- save your "favorite" locations and check their conditions anywhere, anytime. Just tap on the gold star to Favorite any station;
- simply use your current location and the app will retrieve the nearest 20 stations to you, up to 50 kilometers away!
- Supports metric units via the Settings tab;
This app was made by a degreed meteorologist, full-time Dad, and part-time app developer. Your support is appreciated.
Well thanks to Devs for their written review of their App - HOME PWS and for sending in the promo codes to give away. Folks if you would like a chance for a promo code for this App - send an email to todayinios at gmail dot com and put HOME in the subject line. And get me those emails prior to August 21st.

http://www.redmondpie.com/apple-has-patched-taig-jailbreak-
exploits-in-ios-8.4.1/
Thanks to all that sent in various links about the 8.4.1 update for iOS.
The articles varied in recommendations from - No don’t do it - if you are a jailbreaker to - yes you must do it - it fixes lots of security bugs. Later see the former.
In all Apple fixed over 40 bugs with this double dot update. That includes the 3 that were used in the current jailbreak - so yes - this update was definitely focused on killing the jailbreak - and Apple succeeded.
I will have a link in the show notes to the Apple report on this update. In it you will find all the bugs and issues squashed with this update. Including the first 3 where Apple gives credit to the Jailbreaking team.
If you are a jailbreaker or thinking of jailbreaking do not update past iOS 8.4
If you are not a jailbreaker and you are using Apple Music - then this is the update you are looking for. As again it fixes bugs with Apple Music and makes your iOS device more secure.
As with any iOS update - there are always reports of new issues popping up. So if you are sitting there with iOS 8.4 and all is working well and you have no issues and you are not using Apple Music - you may want to consider holding off updating for now.
That said I would recommend this update for all non-jailbreakers. First before you update - make sure to do my recommended steps - where you close out all apps - do a back up - and then reset network settings - then after that do the update.
Some of the problems that have popped up with iOS 8.4.1 - and mind you this is just for a very very small percentage of people are : iMessage Problems, Bluetooth Problems, Data Problems, Wifi Problems and Battery life problems. If you have any of these issues - the first recommendation I have seen out there on the boards - and which seems to work for most is you guessed it.
Go to settings - general - reset - reset network settings.
I am going to go out on a limb and say - if people had done that before they updated - probably a good chance they would not have seen the issues after the update.
In the Google+ community - Ed Tilden asked.
quote Is it worth upgrading to iOS 8.4.1 from 8.3 if I have no interest in Apple Music, or should I wait until iOS 9? unquote
I think this one is more straight forward. If you are at 8.3 - and have no interest in Apple Music and jailbreaking - yes you should still upgrade. As there were bigger bugs - security issues fixed in 8.4 and more in 8.4.1. So you will get a more secure device with 8.4.1 then with 8.3.
That said - here is this response from Levi M
Quote - I wish I would have stayed on 8.3. Music app changed way too much for my taste. And kicked audiobooks into the iBooks app. I personally hate the new music app.
Unquote
That said Levi did say he is jailbroken so he is able to put in the patch that came with 8.4 via the jailbreak - which he could have also done had he not upgraded to 8.4
Still I think outside of Jailbreakers - if you are at 8.3 - you should upgrade to 8.4.1 when you can.
If you need your iPhone or iOS device for work - then wait until the end of your work week to update - giving you your days off to fix any issues that may happen from any update.

numerical-value-for-signal-strength/
Thanks to Michael for this next one. Which is a tip on how you can change your signal strength indicator from dots to a numerical number.
Simply go to the Phone and type in
* 3001 # 12345 # * then tap call
Once in the field test mode - Hold down the power button until you see the slide to power off message. Then release the power button.
Next Press and hold the home button - about 5 second later the phone will go from the power off screen to the home screen and in the upper left the power indicator should be showing.
FYI -113 is on the lower end of the signal strength and -50 is on the upper side of signal strength - the closer to Zero the better.

Hey Rob.
Wondering why you did not offer the Android switcher text message Bluetooth question the solution of asking Siri to read the message to him?
I know it is not automatic but he would just need to press a button on the Bluetooth headset to invoke Siri.

We are now well over 2,000 members in our Google+ community and growing.
Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.
One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from Jaime Peralta who posted the following question
Quote
OK this is a longshot but worth a try has anyone ever been successful in unlocking a smashed screen in order to backup photos.
Unquote
From the comments the issue Jaime is having is the device can not be backed up to the PC unless it is unlocked. And they are with sprint - who will not repair but rather replace the unit. And they have photos they need to get off the device. In fairness to Jaime it is her son’s phone whom she told to be backing it up - and he did not. And she has insurance on it - and does not want to go through a 3rd party that could repair it and pay them - when she has the insurance.
There have been recommendations to try and use voice over by triple tapping the home button.
But so far no luck.
Seems it comes down now to a choice of loosing the photos or paying a 3rd party to fix the screen.
If anyone has any other suggestions for Jaime you can email or call them in.
Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone. Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.
Folks Go to today in iOS dot com slash community to join in.
And thanks to all 2000+ of you already in the community and contributing.
Also from the Google Plus community was this post from Stephen Williams who wrote:
quote - If after the free trial of Apple music, you don't continue with the service, can you then no longer access any music you have made available for off-line use? unquote
That is an easy one - any Music you download via Apple Music is wrapped in DRM like a pig is wrapped in a blanket. And once you cancel the Apple Music service - any of that music will cease to be playable. That was a hard requirement put in place for the record labels. That said - it is just plain business sense as well. Once you stop paying for a streaming service - you no longer get that streaming content - and that is what Apple Music is a Streaming Service at heart - with the added advantage of offline playback.

aid-to-accept-apple-and-google-mobile-payments/
Thanks Emiko for this next one.
Which is the folks at Rite Aid finally came to their senses and turned back on the ability to take Apple Pay for payment.
If you don’t remember - back when Apple Pay launched - Rite Aid turned off that capability on their payment terminals - due to their agreement with CurrentC and the Merchant Customer Exchange. Evidently that agreement or part of it expired this year - allowing Rite Aid to accept Apple pay if they wanted - and it seems they want.
So right now if you go to a Rite Aid - you should be able to use Apple Pay.
Rite Aid - did say they will also be accepting CurrentC when that is finally rolled out later this year. Or at least when later this year CurrentC is carried by 6 to its launch party.

http://www.idownloadblog.com/2015/08/12/new-iphones-fiksu/
Well it looks like new iPhones are starting to show up on server logs - research firm Fiksu looked at the logs for many of the apps it works with and found iPhone 8.1 and iPhone 8.2 - last year around this time they also found iPhone 7.1 and iPhone 7.2 in their logs and those turned out to be the 6 and 6+ respectively. So this time it looks like the 6s and 6s+ respectively are the 8.1 and 8.2.
What is not found is a 3rd new iPhone - so rumors or hopes or prayers for an update 4 inch - call it an iPhone 6C - yeah right now - the evidence is not pointing to that happening at least not at the September event.
18:58
http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/iphone/iphone-6s-7-
release-date-rumours-features-price-uk-images-force-
touch-photos-leak-event-pre-order-3589633/
Leading up to the September 9th event - a lot of the news will really be speculation on what will or will not be announced. The Last few weeks leading up to the event are some of the toughest weeks in the year for covering the iPhone - just because so many people realize there is a feeding frenzy going on and they want to get in on it - and that means lots of bogus posts to sort through and filter out.
Ok - that said - here is the latest in the what I consider the most interesting rumors that don’t come from total whack jobs - with emphasis on the word total
BlueTooth 4.1 - that comes from me based on Bluetooth being in the iPod Touch 6th gen.
A9 processor - that comes from everyone based on everything.
2GB of Ram - this coming from many - based on iOS 9 and many features only available for the iPad Air which has 2 GB of Ram.
Per the new Camera - this is where rumors move all over the place. There is the 12 MP camera rumor - attributed to many - Ming chi Kuo being a big promoter of that rumor.
Other rumors around the camera are pointing to the LynX camera module.
Ming also said the casing design and materials would be different and would prevent another bend gate - this is recently backed by leaked photos of the case.
Most are expecting just two new iPhones - both at the same 4.7 and 5.5 inch size - I think given the history of 3G and 3gS - 4 and 4S - and 5 and 5S - it will not surprise anyone to see an S added to the current models and the package size stay the same.
There are rumors to improved Touch ID - which well could mean anything.
There is also the rose gold iPhone 6S+ edition iPhone rumor
One of the other rumors recently was about future and maybe the next iPhones being waterproofed.
One other - and lets not call it a rumor - but rather someone looking at an apple patent and hoping - and it is about the home button being able to pop up and then be a joy stick for games. So essentially the home button would have springs under it and when you want to use it for a joystick it would pop up - yeah - can’t see that causing issues like breaking off during game play or when it pops out by accident in your pocket or when it gets stepped on by a flying pink elephant. Which is about as likely as this option coming to being.
Yeah one side of the rumor mill is going on about getting rid of the Home button and not this one comes along where the home button can turn into a joystick. Ummm no - to either this time around. There will still be a home button and it will be pretty much what you have now.
All right - I put those rumors out there for a reason - in the past if you look at all the rumors before a new iPhone launch -there are some that seem like slam dunks that do not happen and then there are new features added no one was predicting.
So that leads me to this question - what new feature or features are you looking for that for you would make the next iPhone a must have upgrade? For some it is just being released - but for others - like myself with an iPhone 6+ or 6 - you may need something major to push you into an upgrade.
For me - it is the LynX camera module - if the iPhone 6S+ has that - then I will upgrade - but force touch and a slight increase on the camera - is not going to do it for me.
Give us a call 206-666-6364 - that 206 moon dog or send an email let me know what new feature or features you NEED to upgrade come September - especially if it is one I did not just mention. Because you know there will be new features not on that bingo card.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/apple-delay-live-tv-2016-210119330.html
There were a lot of rumors leading up to WWDC that Apple would unveil a TV and Movie streaming service similar to Apple Music - obviously that did not happen. Then the rumors said it is coming just in the fall - as Apple was still finalizing the deal with the TV studios and other video rights holders.
Now comes the rumor - this time from Bloomberg - that says - yeah - not this fall either. Maybe some time in 2016.
Essentially it is taking longer for apple to cut deals with these rights holders - like CBS and 21 centurty fox and so on.
The rumors indicate that shocker - it is the price of the content that is the point of contention.
Another issue beyond pricing - is concerns that Apple has the backbone capacity in place to handle such a huge amount of digital data while offering up a end user experience that is seamless. If you think that is not a realistic issue - go to your Apple TV - go to the Trailers app - and try watching a few trailers - it is a brutally painful experience.
Either or both of these issues - is enough to delay things.
So those looking to spend another $40 a month to Apple for streaming video content - yeah - you may be waiting until 2016 if not later.
Personally $40 a month seems steep - unless you are killing off cable. But still that is over 4 times the price of Netflix.
Guess we will know when we know.

http://9to5mac.com/2015/08/18/opinion-apple-tv/
Speaking of Apple TV - the rumors around a new Apple TV are continuing - I mean new Apple Event = new Apple TV rumor - right. 9 to 5 mac is reporting or suggesting or hoping that the next Apple TV will be announce on September 9th - and it will have the following features.
1. It will run a version of iOS 9.
2. It will have an A8 Chip and 1GB of Ram - and 32 GB of internal storage.
3. It will have a new remote and said remote with work with Siri.
4. It will come with an App store.
5. The new Remote will have and be a touchpad
It will be interesting to see if this is the event when a New Apple TV is actually announced.

http://www.siliconbeat.com/2015/08/14/apples-self-
driving-car-dont-get-your-hopes-up-yet/
Lots of rumors about an Apple Car in the last week - a lot of that driven by the release of records where Apple requested to use the GoMentum Station a 2,100 acre former naval base that is being used by some autonomous vehicles to do testing.
What the letter from Apple said was quote We would ... like to get an understanding of timing and availability for the space, and how we would need to coordinate around other parties who would be using [it] unquote
But here is the deal - just because apple is looking for a testing ground for a car - does not mean it is a car they are developing - it could also be for testing Car Play
There is nothing in the emails indicating it is about testing self driving cars.
I know a lot of people want Apple to release its own self drive - electric automobile - but it is not likely to happen any time soon.
IF - and this is a big IF - If Apple ever does plan to introduce a car - it would be something they would need to announce years - as in multiple years in advance - just because of all the testing and Government approvals that will be needed. This will not be a Sept 9th event announcement - with Pre-orders starting on Sept 11th and cars delivering themselves on the 18th.

Hi Rob always enjoy your podcast. I have a question for you since you have an iPhone 6 plus. If there is a reason for you to upgrade your IPhone Sept 9th, are you going with an IPhone 6s or iPhone 6s plus? Essentially are you going to stick with the larger screen or go back to the smaller iPhone 6s.

Hi Rob,
In response to David from Ireland: The VoiceOver speech staying with the phone is an Airplay specific thing. I know many people who desire this for bluetooth. One solution requires that you have an AppleWatch, but you could control the music through the now playing glance and only hear VO through the watch speaker.
Regarding my AppleWatch: Does unpairing and repairing reset the watch completely, or is it quick? I want to have some time to go through the setup process again if this is indeed the case.
Daniel is hilarious!! “that place in California with the bridge?” Love it! And you should continue the “fun with Siri” segments at the end of the show. Really breaks things up a bit.
Thanks for all your help and advice.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/1382523
Hi Rob,
Not sure if you have mentioned this indiegogo project yet. Their only offering a case for the iPhone 6 for now. I am hoping they will get enough request for the plus.
Regards,
Lawrence
And what Lawrence is talking about is the ThinCharge - one word - which is claiming to be the world’s thinnest Battery Phone case.
This will double your battery life on the iPhone 6.
With the iphone 6 naked and afraid - it is 0.27 inches in thickness and weighs 4.6 oz.
With the Thincharge and the iPhone 6 installed - it is 0.5 Inches thick and only 4.9 oz. So about double the thickness - which is good - since part of that is the protective lip on the front of the case to keep your screen from cracking when you drop it on its face.
This project had a goal of $30k - and are over $45k now - with 37 days left for funding.
The Early Bird backer price for this is $59 and 472 of the 1000 set aside at that price have been claimed. Estimated deliver is September 2015 - which means these are already built.
Sadly again there is no option for an iPhone 6+ - this is just for the iPhone 6 and 6S or what ever the next gen will be assuming it is the same dimensions.

Thanks to Michael for this next one.
Which is news that you no longer need to set an appointment to go and try on an Apple Watch.
This means you also no longer need to give your name and Apple ID to try one on. If you happen to be out and about now and find yourself at an Apple store - and want to try one on you can. It looks you can still make an appointment if you want - you just no longer HAVE to make an appointment.

Hi Rob
I am experiencing weird behaviour on my 6 plus with the music app. Audio keeps pausing by itself, without me doing anything. I thought it was an issue with my apple earbuds, but I still have the same issue with a new pair. I don't have this issue with the podcast app, just the music one. What can I try to troubleshoot this?

Hi.... Do you or any other listeners know if there is a way for notifications on the apple watch, messages in particular to go straight to the red dot and not appear as a full screen notification first?
After doing some testing it seems the notification goes to the red dot after approx 10 seconds, however if you turn your wrist and the screen turns on within that first 10 seconds, the full screen notification does not go away with out pressing a physical button.

Here is a post in the Google+ community from Saul Lowery - AKA Mr Sales - talking about his Apple Watch issues for his space Grey Apple Watch Sport and scratches on the back and flaking of the paint. Saul said the following:
Quote
An Apple engineer called me yesterday and today wanting to speak to me, but I wasn't able to pick up the phone, so they left a voice message and also emailed me. So I was finally able to call them back today. He introduced him self as a Apple Engineer and was calling to investigate my Apple Watch sport scratching problem. He asked me a series of questions and also mentioned that there were others with the same issue(hey Rob, I gave Today in IOS a shout out as the way I initially found out about my paint peeling off the back of my Apple Watch). He said it wasn't officially a manufacturing defect, but it's leaning towards that being the issue. If you had your Apple Watch replaced for this issue expect a possible call from Apple themselves to get a gist of your daily activity and use case of your Apple Watch. he even asked the type of workouts I do and my working environment. I told him I use my Apple Watch from 4 in the morning to 10 at night ending the day with roughly 45% battery life, he was like wow that's a long day. He was pretty cool and very courteous I really didn't mind the phone call. I only wish other companies customer service were this great. Oh yeah I almost forgot he said that currently the Apple Watch sport space gray is the only Apple Watch with this issue, so if you own this model then you should take a look at the back of your Apple Watch and see if the paint is peeling off the letters and also if there are scratches on the back composite back of the Apple Watch sport. As of now Apple will just replace your watch, but in the future they may have a possible fix once they figure out the cause of this issue. Hope this helps out anybody that's having problems with this. Please reach out to me if you want to know what I did to avoid this same fate with my replacement Apple Watch sport to avoid the scratches, but the paint peeling is a whole other issue, I don't have a clue how to avoid that from happening.

teen-truck-collapse/31746425/
Thanks to everyone that sent in links on this next one.
It is the article in USA today titled - Siri Saves teen after truck collapses on him.
Which well is about a teenage Sam who had his truck jacked up and the front wheels off - and he was under it working on the brakes - when the jack collapsed and the truck came down on him pinning him under it. Sam was able to butt dial 911 by activating siri - The operator initially thought it was just another butt dial mistake until she realized those screams for help might mean something was up. or down in this case.
She dispatched help and they were able to get the truck off of him and get him to the hospital where he suffered several broken ribs, a bruised kidney, a concussion and burns to his left arm. He is now in good condition - and Siri is credited for helping save his life.

VOICEMAIL - Trelawny_quest_issues_apple_watch
Hello Rob,
I need some help from you or the listeners with a problem I sometimes have with my alarm clock on my 5S. I'm running IOS 8.4. The issue is, sometimes my alarm doesn't make any sound or vibration. When I wake up (late) and then wake the phone screen up, the screen shows as if the alarm is going off and waiting to be silenced or snoozed, but not making a sound or vibration.
I've tried reading the forums for a solution and found it that is a problem others are experiencing also, but I've yet to find a real solution.
One thing that seems to possibly be a culprit is a notification coming in prior to or at the time of alarm going off. This morning it did it on me and I noticed your push notification on the new episode being up, came in prior to the alarm going off. Which caused me to turn off the notifications for TII this morning in settings (which I hate to do). I'm not sure turning off notifications will help, but I can't take that chance, my alarm going off is too important to me.
If you or anyone is aware of this problem and has found a solution, I would love to hear of it!
Regards

Hello Rob,
I had my 6 plus in my pocket at work and when I took it out of my pocket it was unlocked and everything is in black and white, like the tvs of old! I did an Internet search and I found the accessibility setting for grayscale, but that was turned off and I have no idea how to change it back. I was hoping you or your listeners would have an idea on how to fix it.
Regards,
Jason H
Hey Rob,
After emailing you 5 minutes ago I did find a solution, and it is a known bug since 8.1.3… to fix the issue as restarting my phone or doing a restore didn't correct it was to go into the settings app and turn off the "Zoom" feature that allows you to triple tap the screen. I am playing around with it and when I turn that feature back on, my phone immediately converts back to black and white, frustrating 😑
Just wanted to let you know about it, and here's hoping apple finds a solution with the next update.

Jason H
