TRANSCRIPT FOR EPISODE 407
Welcome to the show I am your host Rob and this is the Today in iOS podcast - First up I want to thank AARON for sending in the music you hear in the background. AARON wrote:
Hey Rob,
This song called "Be Released" is about life and love in the modern world. The track was originally written using Garage Band on my iPad Pro 9.7 and my Casio Px5s synthesizer. It was then later exported to Logic Pro on my MacBook Pro and mastered using a very cool software package called Lurssen Mastering, (pronounced Ler-sen) from IKMultimedia which is available for both IOS, and Mac OS. I continued to use the iPad during this process via Logic Remote.
I can be found online on my official site: http:www.aarontoddmusic.com, on Twitter: @aarontodd, my blog about music: https://aarontoddonline.wordpress.com and on Reverb Nation At: https://www.reverbnation.com/aaront

“Imagine Samsung introducing revolutionary new lines of mobile phones and tablet computers with twice the battery life of Apple devices! Imagine colors more vivid than you have ever seen in any display before and half the thickness of Apple devices! The foregoing is not just a hyperbole; Samsung is pouring billions into making this happen. unquote

10-1-beta-to-developers/
Well Developers - Apple has released iOS 10.1 beta 1 for testing on Sep 21st - nice way to end the summer.
The big add with 10.1 beyond bug fixes and optimization upgrades - is The new Portrait bokeh feature - that is where it focuses on the person you are taking a picture of and blurs the background.
This is just for iPhone 7Plus owners - so I should say it is the biggest part of the update as long as your iPhone 7 plus has been delivered to you and is not still showing 2 to 3 weeks for delivery like oh I don’t know - MINE.
And there is is also a fix for motion handling in 10.1 beta 1.
It is rumored 10.1 beta 1 will be available for non-devs by the end of the week.
Betas for Xcode 8.1, Watch OS 3.1 and tv OS 10.0.1 were also released to devs on the 21st.

VOICEMAIL - Rob_usdin_feedbk_what_happened_update_iOS10
Rob - Thanks for that explanation on what happened - and yes if you like living on the edge and are careful enough to back up fully before trying a new update - go for it. Well unless you are on T-Mobile.
Again - each year there are a few things that go on with the new updates. - And this year the 2nd item and bigger item is well T-Mobile USA is saying essentially - Boom babies strange but not a stranger - which means - do not update to iOS 10 at this time.
Seems if you have an iPhone 6, 6 plus and SE - it is telling customers not to install iOS 10 - as there are or were connection issues.
Since this issue was announced late last week - Apple has rolled out a fix - so if you did update to iOS 10 - there is an update to the update. And if you are just updating now - you should be ok.
Again - if you are conservative and really want all your apps to work all the time - you still may want to wait until one or two more updates roll out.
But if you like living on the edge and are ok fixing things or dealing with some small issues - then go ahead and update to iOS 10.0.1
Just make sure to back up fully before doing so.
And make sure to update all your apps before hand as well.
Then force quit all open apps - and do a network settings reset - then reconnect to wifi and then do your update from iOS 9.x to iOS 10.0.1
Good luck.
Into the email bag.
Hi Rob
Having updated to iOS almost immediately (yes, I'm one of those people), I have to say overall I am very happy with it.
Stuck in traffic last night, I decided to see how Siri had improved. All I can say is thank you Apple. I often use Siri to change music when I am driving and in the past this could be a very frustrating exercise (the phone nearly getting chucked out the car window a few times). But now, none of that. Not once last night did it get a request wrong.
My only gripe is with the Music app interface - it looks like a cheap Word Press site.

Plus+Teardown/67384
After each new iOS device hits the market - there is one post I and many others really look forward to - and it is the tear down post from iFixit.
And yes - they have their iPhone 7 plus teardown available and it well is not really surprising - Repairability wise the 7Plus gets a score of 7 out of 10 - which is the same as the 6S plus and 6 Plus.
Final Thoughts to start from iFixit.
On the positive - The battery is straight forward to access and replace. And the Solid state home button eliminates a common point of failure.
The addition of making it more water resistant means it is more difficult to open up. Which means getting to the battery and screen to replace them is more difficult - but once you get it open it is easier to replace them.
And Apple added tri-point screws for no apparent reason other than to make manufacturers of try-point screw drivers really happy as it is one more screw driver you need to purchase to repair and iphone.
The Battery - which some bogus teardowns claimed was much smaller than the 6S plus - ended up being bigger then the 6S plus and on par to the battery of the 6Plus. Coming n at 2900 mAh vs 2750 mAh for the 6S Plus and 2915 mAh for the 6 Plus. Of course with iOS devices - Battery size is not a direct correlation to battery life - as there are new optimizations with the updated chips. Still nice to see a good size battery in there again.
Looking at the Logic board is physically confirmed there are 3GB of Ram in the iPhone 7Plus vs 2GB for the iPhone 7.
Again really nothing shocking or even unexpected discovered.
Into the email bag.
Hi Rob,
It hadn't occurred to me until yesterday why I might miss the headphone jack. When driving, I typically use google maps on my iPhone, but I plug in the iPhone to keep the battery charged. I also listen to podcasts (like Tii) while I'm driving but to keep to myself I use a wired headphone. I wonder if there will be a way to charge and listen at the same time, maybe a jumper of some sort. Or I guess I just get a pair of wireless headphones (and keep them charged...).
Love the show,
Regards,
Mike
VOICEMAIL - Scott_TX_redo_part2_headphone_jack
Hi, Rob,
Something I haven't heard mentioned concerning the absence of the headphone jack in the iPhone 7 is the awkwardness of using wired headphones while carrying the iPhone in a belt case. Every case I've seen allows the headphone cable to escape through the case corner with the "old" iPhone configuration. The iPhone 7, with its adapter dongle which sprouts from the Lightning connector in the center of the body, doesn't work with belt cases.

Larry

7-jet-black-sold-out/index.html
Early on a lot of the articles about sales this launch talked about higher than expected demand - then the pendulum swung the other way and said there was actually less than needed inventory. And any shortages are inventory related and not demand related.
The iPhone 7Plus - Jet Black sold out to November at least on that first night. Other 7 Pluses are hard to get as well right now.
But it is the Jet black that clearly has had the highest demand or major inventory shortage depending on who is telling the tale.
Hi Rob,
here are a few of my initial thoughts after receiving my black 7 Plus. I love the new home button. I had problems with it on my iPhone 5 and 6, where after a while it stopped working properly. On my 6S I actually turned on the accessibility on screen home button to not wear out the physical one. Depending on the surface my phone is laying on, the haptic button to me at least feels like an actual button. Totally fools my brain. The sound quality is so much improved by the addition of the second speaker. I use text to speech to communicate, so the improved sound quality and loudness is great. I look forward to using the new camera system. Anyways, I am totally pleased with my new phone.

Darrin

http://qz.com/784332/iphone-7-jet-black-scratches-apple-aapl/
One thing reported early on is the Shinny Jet Black version is a scratch magnet. There is a video on youtube showing someone scratching it.
Hint - If you take out a sheet metal screw and rub it vigorously on your iPhone - ummm - yeah it will scratch your iPhone - duhhhh.
It did also scratch - with keys and a penny and of course with a razor blade.
So you know - you might just want to keep change, Razorblades, Sheet Metal screws and your car keys out of the pocket you have your Jet Black iPhone in.
Hi Rob,
Per the iPhone 7 - I'm not sure, may be my imagination but seems like a little better sound from the 7 on Bluetooth and lightning port adapter.
FYI as I've said some podcasts are not loud enough on Bluetooth.
I've found a Bluetooth to headphone jack adapter that's pretty loud.
I've got to figure out which one I ordered and get more. Both of this type require USB power so no charging necessary.
$2 amazon from china. I'll probably try to get $10 or $20 worth to have on hand for extras or someone that needs one. Great for your aux jack.

Hi Rob,
Just got my iphone 7 256gb (up from a 16gb 6!!) love it so far and as per the article here i think the display is fantastic!
Looking forward to putting the camera through its paces but again, very impressed so far.
No sign of the hissing i keep reading about either.
I went for black by the way and to be honest its gone straight into a case so who cares!
Sent my old 6 back to EE and they have offered me £200 ($260) which I'm pretty happy about too.
Great show Rob, been listening for more years than i care to mention!
All the best

Thanks simon for the email and the heads up on this article from Fortune that says the iPhone 7’s display is just about perfect - this based on testing from Displaymate. They said quote
“It is the most color accurate display that we have ever measured, It is visually indistinguishable from perfect, and is very likely considerably better than any mobile display, monitor, TV or UHD TV that you have.”
unquote
Display mate has been testing smartphone displays for years - we have mentioned them before and they found that the iPhone 7 display has the top performance across the board for all their tests.
Their biggest question mark about the iPhone 7 screen is why Apple was not jumping up and down at the keynote event touting how great it is.
Hi Rob,
Got the new 7 today in mail
Updated to iOS 10.0.01
I'm waiting a few days or week to activate celluar as its my primary phone.
Coming from a 4s this is wonderful.
Especially the display zoom.
The home button is very cool. There is a indention that looks like a button.
You program from three choices the feel. It's like how the vibration works. It actually feels like it clicks. This is way cool. Really tricked out.
If you know 10.0.1 is ready for prime time reply with the word.
Bigger screen is going to be great in the truck. Hope battery will last me all day using the headphone adapter.
Need to download your app.
Going from 6.3 to 10.0 and 16g to 254

There are posts and some reports about what is being dubbed hiss gate - that is where some iPhone 7 owners are reporting hearing a hissing sound when under heavy use.
I do not have any reports yet of listeners saying they had this issue - just that they have not.
If your iPhone 7 is hissing - let us know.

Some bench mark tests are starting to come in. GSM arena ran the iPhone 7 through the AnTuTu testing. And the results - the best they ever tested. About 25% better than the OnePlus 3
One thing we will see through out the next year - is that the only phone that beats the iPhone 7 in these tests will be the iPhone 7Plus.

samsung-galaxy-note-7-in-speed-test.html
Well John - Thanks for that funny little quote - Kinda like besides the food poisoning it was the best Burrito I ever had.
Well so now that we know the Note 7 is the best Android fun - despite the whole exploding battery problem. How does it do in a real world speed test vs the iPhone 7. Hint - The Note 7 lost on this head to head speed test vs the iPhone 6S. Which smoked the Note 7. Well the iPhone 7 did more then Smoke the Note 7 - it dare I say incinerated it.
This is a test where they get the same apps on both devices and then launch each app and in some of them do a task - then move to the next app and so on - basically moving from app to app. Then they go back and relaunch all the apps again. This shows also how the devices work in holding the apps in stasis between uses.
In short it worked out like this. The iPhone 7 was finished with everything before the Note 7 even completed the first lap and the iPhone 7 was done a lot sooner. Over all it took the iPhone 7 - one minute 40 seconds vs the note 7’s the minutes 14 seconds. So essentially half the time of the note 7. Imagine what would happen on this test with the 7Plus - which has more ram.

Hi Rob
I've been listening a long time. Love your show. I have always been an S model upgrader. I had decided not to make the jump to the 7. I work outdoors and to be honest the louder speakers and water resistance and better battery are very tempting. But I couldn't justify the jump from my 6S. I also have the original iPad mini, which is almost unusable so I was considering upgrading that. Now I see ATT deal to send in my iPhone 6s and receive monthly credit for a total of $650. This makes the 7 only cost me $100 in the end and I would be eligible to upgrade again to whatever next year brings. I am on the grandfathered unlimited data plan so I have no plans of switching carriers. What would you advise? 7 for a $100 or just wait it out?
Regards,
Dan
Dan - why not kill two birds with one upgrade - go to the 7 plus - and that gets you in-between the 6S and iPad mini size wise. People forget there are extra features with iOS with the plus versions when you go landscape. so go with the 7 plus for $200 if you can.
VOICEMAIL - Laura_TX_iPhone7plus_battery_settings
1. Anytime you want to see what is draining your battery - first make sure you have your device running without power until it is down to 20% - at that point go to Settings - Battery - and scroll down and look for the last 24 hours and see what chewed up the most of your battery life. Make sure it is all apps you expected to see.
2. Make sure handoff is turned off - unless you are actually using that feature. Go to Settings —> General —> Handoff - and toggle off.
3. Goto Settings - iTunes & App Stores and turn off automatic downloads for all items.
4. Turn on Time Zone Override - this is one many people forget about - Go to Settings - Calendar - Time Zone Override - and toggle on. And select your time zone. If you do not have it on - then events will display according to the time of your current location and looking for your location over and over drains the battery.
5. Speaking of Locations - go to Settings - Privacy - location services - and turn off location services to all games - and set to while using for any you think need it - and turn fieldtester from always to never.
6 Also under Privacy - go to Diagnostic & usage and set to don’t send.
7 Turn off Airdrop - unless you plan on using it now or in the next few minutes - the rest of the time keep it off. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and toggle it off there.
8 Check your brightness setting - and try turning it down some and see if you are ok with the screen a little dimmer.
That are just 8 quick tips for getting improved battery life. If you look in the Tii App - under PDF’s there is the list of battery improvements for iOS 8 - many still important. And yes I need to update that doc. That doc had 19 tips for battery improvement.

Well yes - kinda - except the plug is much cheaper, much smaller, and much much much lighter. The lightest version of the GoalZero is 12 lbs - vs 2 lbs 3 oz for the plug. And the one that is comparable spec wise - which Plus has mentioned on their indie gogo page weighs in at 29 lbs. ouch - I mean literally ouch.
If you want to learn more about the plug - go back to ep 406 around the 44 Minute mark for more info. It is a pretty cool indiegogo project for anyone looking for truly portable back up power for all their devices including their laptops.

Hi Rob,
I have recently found “Today in iOS” and it is very informative. I have just upgraded my iPhone 5s to 10.0.1 with no issues,
however I have identified that the Podcast app cannot be added to the Widgets screen. I view and listen to several podcasts and if they were able to be added to this screen it would be great.
Is there any way this can be resolved, if not can you please check with your listeners and see if this would be good for them. Which is the best way to contact Apple developers so I could suggest this to them.
Regards,
John

Hi Rob,
As always, the latest episode concerning the September seventh roll-out was great.
Apple prides itself on producing beautiful and excellent products.
They continue to improve the camera but it is still true that the phone is woefully poor at two things.
Most cell phones have terrible audio.Facetime Audio helps a little, but the difficulty in understanding people's phone calls particularly when calling from a car is a significant.
Apple's audio quality is no worse than that of other cell phones, but it is no better either.
It may simply be a fact that the nature of cell phone means poor quality audio which may be the reason texting has become more popular than calling.
My other concern may sound silly, but Apple's ear buds which came with all phones prior to the seven, are just awfull.
They are better than airplane buds, but not much.
I wish Apple valued its audio as much as it valued the video.
I like better speakers on the new phones but will not be upgrading because I want my head phone jack to work without some kind of adapter which I will probably lose.
Wired always trumps bluetooth for quality mentioned above and simplicity.
That is enough grumbling from me.
I hope they bring back the small phones next year when my upgrade cycle comes up.
Jan Brown.
Hi Rob,
I've been holding onto my 4s mainly because I like the headphone jack on the top which I feed into my freightliner radio aux jack.
The 7 with the dongle will work for me and be better than the 6 off to the side.
Supposedly belkin is releasing on oct 10 a dongle to 2 female lightening lighting ports blessed by apple which will allow charging while using the headphone adapter, although a little clunky. Price $40.
Additional apple headphone adapters $9.
Since I keep my phones longer than usual ill be getting the 256g.
Everyone should keep in mind, aftermarket battery packs may not allow use of the dongles.
I'm not sold on the air buds as I find the new ear design does not give much bass, I like the old design better.
I'll finally be able to get the tii app, as I didn't like the new pastel look when ios7 came out so my 4s is on 6.3. And the tii app won't run on 6.3. I'm starting to have other performance issues as well probably related to 6.3.
Regards,
Mike R
Hi Rob, your listeners might know of the 'trick' to free up space on your iOS device where you go to iTunes and 'rent' a movie too big for the space you have available. You aren't charged as your phone 'cleans' the cache of various apps looking to create space for the download. Upon doing this I often had another gb or so available.
Well it looks like iOS 10 has killed this, I tried it the other day and was charged for the rental and no cleaning of apps and no freeing up of space.
Hopefully this won't be an issue too much longer as Thankfully any new phone I get will be a 32gb one due to Apple no longer producing the 16gb phone.
For those of us who have their device provided to them by the company they work for, like me many I guess have just been provided with the entry level phone (16gb)
Thanks Rob

I have mentioned before iPhone cases that also have a bottle opener. Not exactly the kind of torque you want to put an iPhone through - but this next one says - hey - don’t just kill your liver - you need to kill your lungs to - and they have both a bottle open and a lighter built into the iPhone case.
They say it is an iPhone case with a battery pack, credit card holder, bottle opener and lighter. It is called the Sparkslide Version 2. And they haver versions for the iPhone 7 and 7+
So if you want to be able pound down a few while lighting up a few - this is the case for you. They hit their goal of $80k. And you have until Oct 10th at 9:11 PM CT to fund this one.
Interestingly they have a version for the samsung Note 7 - but only have the bottle opener built in - guess there was no need to add the lighter part - as that feature is apparently built into the Note 7.
If you want more info search for Sparkslide in the show notes for Ep 407 at today in iOS dot com.

On the last episode I mentioned the Utomic edge bumpers that you can get to at todayinios dot com slash utomic - well they sent an email saying if you use promo code upgrade - upper case - that you will also get a free utomic glass screen protector - that is a nice $30 value - for free when you order your edge bumpers. Again go to - todayinios dot com slash utomic which is our affiliate link. And yes I have mine and they are sitting here mocking me as I wait for my iPhone 7+ to arrive - but the first thing I am doing with my new iphone is putting these bumpers on it.

Hey Rob,
It seems none of your blue shirt listeners responded to a few of the questions that have been asked in episodes 403-405. I just caught up, so I figured I would be your blue shirt for some of the questions asked.
1) For the callers reporting issues with getting a passcode change screen coming up frequently for them, this is new for iOS 8. It doesn't have a rhyme or reason, but it does seem to be targeted at people who have set pass codes that do not follow secure rules. When it comes to 6 digit passcode, these are restricted to devices with Touch ID as they are easier to access without the passcode, so having a longer code does not hinder the user. This may also be a reason some people are seeing forced passcode changes to be more secure.
2) For AppleCare pricing, I think it was said before, but the pricing is actually based off the full destruction of a phone, which doesn't come cheap. While I was working as a Genius in Apple with the new pricing for AppleCare, I started changing how I handled repairs. If a customer with AppleCare came in with a busted screen, I would go over pricing that a screen repair is $129/$149 without AppleCare, but I would also mention that a replacement phone was almost $200-$300, depending on the model. One thing to think of when getting a repair is "How damaging am I to the phone?" If you think you'll continuously break the screen on the phone, it might be better to space out when to get repairs, because a cracked screen is still usable in a sense. Once the phone is destroyed and not usable may be a better time to use AppleCare. Another thing to think is that if you expect to hit water damage at some point, you can opt not to use AppleCare and get the screen repaired. You save your AppleCare and pay about the same cost so that you can continue to have that "Just in case..."
If you have any more questions for a blue shirt, I'll be listening! Thanks for all you do!
Regards,
