Thanks BRIAN for the music and folks I will put the full song at the end of the episode. I also want to thank well Me for the Artwork for today's show.
This is Episode 4 -1- 1 - and if you know my past that is kinda a very special number for me - so I wanted to make sure the Artwork was appropriate. I created this artwork on my iPhone by searching for Podcast411 icon - and finding the 4-1-1 on its own and then with the App Over - I added in the Tii in the upper left.
You can see this artwork in the FREE Tii App via the BONUS button for ep 4-1-1 - or at instagram.com/todayinios and also as a stand alone post in the VIP section and at Facebook.com/todayinios.
If you have some artwork and or music you have created on your iOS device that you would like to share with the audience please email it to me at today in iOS at gmail dot com and please make sure to include which app or apps you used to create said artwork and or music.
AND I am completely out of Music - so if you have some music created on an iOS device - please please please send it in.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote
“However, for the company to truly move forward as a tech power, Apple should hang-up on the iPhone after one more iteration – presumably the iPhone 6. You might disagree.” unquote
Richard Saintvilus, Forbes, 6 January 2013
Might disagree - Might? Huh - So Apple should just shut down the iPhone line - which is what 65 - 70% of its revenue - Genius. Evidently Forbes is pretty liberal with their drug screening policy for employees - because whatever Richard was smoking even Gary Johnson is not for the legalization of.

http://nymag.com/selectall/2016/10/update-ios-10-1-
security-flaw-jpeg-executiable.html
Apple on Monday the 24th released updated for iOS 10.1, tvOS 10.0.1, watchOS 3.1 and for the Mac crowd - macOS 10.12.1
It was a busy day for Apples servers.
Pre 10.1 - the update notes had a lot of info listed per what was changed / updated / fixed.
Camera and Photos
- Introduces Portrait Camera for iPhone 7 Plus that creates a depth effect that keeps your subject sharp while creating a beautifully blurred background (beta)
With out a doubt if you own an iPhone 7Plus - this is a killer feature and you definitely want to upgrade just for this. I saw a comment from Tosin O where he said - Quote I honestly am not to fussed about portrait mode. Well not for now anyway (might change my mind when I see the pictures). UNQUOTE - Yes Tosin - yes you will change your mind once you see the pictures. And then he posted that Yup he changed his mind - Nailed it - It is just soooo different then what you have ever been able to do with a smartphone camera that again as I mentioned on the last episode - you start taking these depth effect photos of everything and everyone. I have one hanging on the fridge right now of my younger son flying a kite and I did the depth effect on him with the kites all blurred - it is pretty cool. Tosin posted one of his Coffee mug. Warning it is addicting - Bokeh(ay) is DA BOMB.
ok other changes for Camera and Photos include
- People names in the Photos app are saved in iCloud backups
- Improved the display of wide color gamut photos in the grid views of the Photos app
- Fixes an issue where opening the Camera app would show a blurred or flashing screen for some users
- Fixes an issue that caused Photos to quit for some users when turning on iCloud Photo Library
Maps
- Transit support for every major train, subway, ferry, and national bus line, as well as local bus systems for Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya
- Sign-based transit navigation including layouts of all underground structures and walkways that connect large transit stations
- Transit fare comparison when viewing alternative transit routes
Messages
- New option to replay bubble and full screen effects
- Messages effects can play with Reduce Motion enabled
- Fixes an issue that could lead to contact names appearing incorrectly in Messages
- Addresses an issue where Messages could open to a white screen
- Addresses an issue that could prevent the report junk option from displaying with unknown senders
- Fixes an issue where videos captured and sent in the Messages app could be missing audio
Apple Watch
- Adds distance and average pace to workout summaries in the Activity app for outdoor wheelchair run pace and outdoor wheelchair walk pace
- Fixes issues that may have prevented Music playlists from syncing to Apple Watch
- Addresses an issue that was preventing invitations and data to appear in Activity Sharing
- Fixes an issue that was allowing Activity Sharing to update over cellular when manually disabled
- Resolves an issue that was causing some third-party apps to crash when inputting text
Other improvements and fixes
- Improves Bluetooth connectivity with 3rd party accessories
- Improves AirPlay Mirroring performance when waking a device from sleep
- Fixes an issue where playback would not work for iTunes purchased content when the “Show iTunes Purchases” setting is turned off
- Fixes an issue where certain selfie apps and face filters used with the FaceTime HD Camera on iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus did not display a live preview
- Fixes an issue in Health where individual strokes are converted to separate characters when using the Chinese handwriting keyboard
- Improves performance of sharing websites from Safari to Messages
- Fixes an issue in Safari that caused web previews in tab view to not display correctly
- Fixes an issue that caused certain Mail messages to be reformatted with very small text
- Fixes an issue that caused some HTML email to be formatted incorrectly
- Fixes an issue that in some cases caused the search field to disappear in Mail
- Fixes an issue that could prevent Today View Widgets from updating when launched
- Fixes an issue where Weather widget sometimes failed to load data
- Fixes an issue on iPhone 7 where Home Button click settings would not appear in search results
- Fixes an issue that prevented spam alert extensions from blocking calls
- Resolves an issue that could prevent alarm sounds from going off
- Fixes an issue where audio playback via Bluetooth would cause the Taptic engine to stop providing feedback for some users
- Resolves an issue preventing some users from restoring from iCloud Backup
But the biggest item from 10.1 was this security fix
quote
Available for: iPhone 5 and later, iPad 4th generation and later, iPod touch 6th generation and later
Impact: Viewing a maliciously crafted JPEG file may lead to arbitrary code execution
Description: A memory corruption issue was addressed through improved memory handling.
Found by Marco Grassi (@marcograss) of KeenLab (@keen_lab).
unquote
This one item is why unlike in the past where I say wait - this time I am saying if you have not updated to 10.1 - you need to - this security fix - fixes a big hole - where if you viewed - not downloaded and opened - but just viewed a malicious JPG - it could execute code on your device - meaning looking at an innocent looking puppies and dandelion images could actually allow a bad guy to take control of your iOS device. So yeah - update to 10.1 ASAP - even if this exploit was not out in the wild before this patch - you know it will be now.
So no 10.1 is not just about Portrait mode for iPhone 7+ owners - it is an update for ALL iOS users that can update to 10.x

http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2016/10/24/apple-
ios-10-1-iphone-cellular-phone-signal-upgrade/#54d821a9780d
One thing I did not see clearly shown in Apples list of what was updated was the fact Apple with 10.1 quietly improved cellular performance for all iPhones with the update.
If you were having issues with 4G and 3G signals dropping for no known or apparent reason - then this is the update you have been looking for.
One of the things that 10.1 is also supposed to improve is battery life.
I did run last week my iPhone after it was fully charged to see the type of battery life I could get when not tethering. This included when I went to the EntreLeadership conference with Dave Ramsey all day really great event - so it was a good set of mix use - but no tethering. I had 13 hours and 37 Minutes with 2% left. That is with 34 hours and 31 minutes of standby.
So if 10.1 does improve battery life - wow. Because those numbers are pretty darn impressive on their own.
Here is some feedback from listeners.
From Shannon H
quote I have been running the public beta for awhile. I can't wait to update my wife's 6 plus tonight so I can begin the bombardment of lasers, fireworks, etc. I know I could’ve already but we both really dislike the motion effect.
unquote
From Stan B quote
I updated my Series 1 Watch, Apple TV and two iPads last night OTA with no problems. Will do the same on my two iPhones today.
unquote
From Craig B
quote
I've updated one iPhone and one Apple TV so far with no issues; I will update the rest of my devices and computers as soon as possible. As usual, no reason to wait unless you are completely risk adverse.

Hi Rob,
Love the show.
As a blind person who uses Voiceover I was eagerly awaiting the 10.1
updates for IOS and TV-OS. Apple introduced a multitude of bugs and
annoyances for voiceover users in IOS and TV-OS 10 many of which I, and
others, have reported to Apple. So, imagine my joy upon discovering that IOS
10.1 and TV-OS 10.1 fixed exactly zero of them.
The podcast app on the Apple TV was made almost unusable in TV-OS 10 and
if anything it's worse now.
It seems that IOS 10.1 is Apple attempting to cram in a few features they
wish they had for IOS 10.0. Perhaps they should rename this version IOS 10.0
(for real).
And now, kindly fix those bloody irritating bugs you introduced. I really
wish I could revert my TV to 9.2.1. That version worked quite well and I've
been unable to discover any redeeming features of TV-OS 10.x even if the
bugs didn't exist.
Okay, enough rant.
Thanks for the show.

Hi Rob,
I downloaded and installed the newly released iOS 10.1 on my iPad Mini 2 yesterday (October 24). Among other bug fixes, Apple promised to fix a 'very small text' problem in their native Mail App. Quote:
- Fixes an issue that caused certain Mail messages to be reformatted with very small text
- Fixes an issue that caused some HTML email to be formatted incorrectly
Since I had been experiencing this small text problem for some time on my iPad Mini, I was excited to get the problem fixed.
However the 'very small text' problem was not fixed in this latest iOS 10.1 update. At least not for me. The text in my mail did appear as normal size for several hours, but when I opened my Mail app this morning, the text had again returned to its small size. I am using AOL and Exchange mail accounts.
Rebooting, closing the mail App, resetting the text size in Accessibility and in Display settings all fix the problem for only temporarily. Then something causes the small text size to return after a few hour.
Does anyone know how to fix this? Resetting network settings didn't work either.

http://www.apple.com/apple-events/october-2016/
On Thursday the 27th - Apple will have an October event with Hello Again being the key words in the invite. That is clearly a reference to updated computers.
The event will be the 27th at 10:00 AM PT / 1:00 PM ET. Standard Apple Event times.
Speculation again is around this event being very Mac centric. New MacBook Pros, and MacBook Airs are expected. Some speculation about updated Mac Pro’s and Mac Minis and possibly even updated iMacs - again mac heavy. For the iOS side of things - expect the new AirPods to be officially launched - either available in store on the 27th or for order on the 27th. But I would expect some amount available in stores on the 27th or 28th. As the website for Apple does say they are Available late October - and traditionally in Apple lingo Available means you can put in your hands - not just available to order.
If there is anything else that is announced that is iOS related - I may do a blog post at today in iOS dot com and in the Tii App to go over what is announced. I will not be putting out another episode this month - as I will be taking a couple of vacation days this week and weekend as my parents are coming to visit.
Of course if they are available to buy this week - if you do get them - please call into the show - 206-666-6364 from your new AirPods and let us know your thoughts.
I do plan to get them as soon as they are available - but would love your feedback and thoughts as well.

The only thing that beats an iPhone is a new iPhone - and the only razor blade to beat a Harrys Razor is a new harrys Razor. With Harrys new Gen 2 Razor Head - they took the best Razor and made it the bestest Razor I have ever used.
And Harrys also has a brand new offer for you.
- Harry’s is so confident in the quality of their blades, they’ll send you their popular Free Trial Set, which comes with the Razor and the Gen2 five-blade Cartridge, and shaving gel. All Free when you sign up for a shave plan, you just pay shipping.
- PLUS, there’s an additional special offer for you great folks: enter code T i i at checkout to get a free post shave balm added to your order.
Harrys Post Shave Balm is incredible - it soothes and moisturizes and best of all my Wife says it makes me smell really good - really really good. So good Wearing it now has somehow become code.
Per their Gen 2 Blade - It is still the great 5 blade razor - but they made some improvements - It is more flexible for better control and more comfortable shaving. They added a 6 th blade at the top for trimming hard to reach spots, and they still of course have the lubricating strip. I don’t just shave my face - if you met me you know I shave my whole head and before Harry’s I tried a lot of different blades ALL the expensive 4 and 5 blades out there and the Gen 1 was better than all of them and the Gen 2 is better than Gen 1 - Harrys moved the bar folks. I am 100% a harrys customer period.
To get the bestest blades - Harry's went and found a German blade factory that was almost 100 years old and purchased it. Harry’s owns the most important part of the razor - the blade and by cutting out the middle men on both sides means they can keep the price low to you.
Plus Harrys as an organization helps those looking for jobs - by donating 1% of their sales and 1% of their time to help prepare people for professional success. Yes a shave that feels great from a company you can feel great about.
Once again go to Harrys.com right now and enter code Tii at checkout to claim your Free Trial Set and Free post shave balm. That’s Harrys.com and then enter coupon code Tii and start shaving better.

And from Shannon Holden in G+
Quote I just discovered that you can use the stock iOS keyboard on the iPhone as a trackpad to move the cursor around while typing. I'm not sure when this became available. Just 3D Touch on the keyboard and it grays out all of the keys, this is the most exciting feature I've seen in a long time. unquote
Now those of you with iPhone 6S and 6S+ already know about this feature as it came out in iOS 9 - but for new iPhone 7 and 7+ users coming from something other than the 6S and 6s+ - this is a cool new feature - that should be mentioned again.
And if you have an iPad or at least for most iPads - you can also do this same thing by tap and holding with two fingers on your keyboard - this is a really nice way to accurately and quickly get your cursor where it needs to be when typing.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.
Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts and comments in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone. Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.
Folks Go to today in iOS dot com slash community to join in.
And thanks to all 3,500+ of you already in the community and contributing.
Also FROM the Google Plus community were these comments per the last episode - which I always pin the last episode at the top.
From John Poyser
quote
I had to wipe & re-set up as new iPhone with iOS 10 to try and resolve some glitches & crashes I was experiencing. Most issues are resolved and the rest I can live with until 10.1 comes out. BUT - now I have to redo all the battery tweaks I've done over months. I heard people mentioning a recent podcast covering this - is it written down in a post OR can someone tell me how to find the episode of TII that coveted it ?
unquote
From Shannon Holden
quote
+John Poyser Go to the Tii app and then go to the PDF section. There you will find 19 battery saving tips. I believe this is what you're looking for.
unquote
From Francisco Tapia
quote
+Shannon Holden +Rob Walch the iOS8 PDF?
Battery saving should be as easy as just turning on low power mode? I mean you pretty much get there by following the PDF.
unquote
From ME
Low Power mode will turn off some other features and limit others more then you may want - going item by item allows you to customize more for what is important to you. Low Power mode basically lobotomizes your iPhone. And low Power mode causes frustration if you are being active - like locking / turning off the screen in 30 seconds. And there are other items as well. So it is better to optimize the iPhone per you individual use case needs - and that do helps - but yes it is also 2 years old and there are new features that need to be shown that when turned off help improve batter life.
And From John Poser
quote
Thanks to all who shared info - I like using the incremental method in the PDF because I like controlling the features & apps that use the juice. I feel that the Low Power Mode is my emergency battery life extender - only for those times I need my phone to last and know I won't be able to charge. Like when I'm on the conference floor. Or on that last day of a long business trip - when nothing's gone right :)
unquote
Exactly John. Low Power mode is when you need your Smartphone to be just a phone. That is how I look at or as I said when you find it is ok to Lobotomize your iPhone for the sake of keeping the Phone part active - then low power mode can be used.
Into the email bag.
Hi Rob,
For some reason anytime I post something to the Today in iOS Google Community, it shows up for a few seconds and then goes away. Have I done something to offend your filtering system there?
Thanks for all you do.
Love the podcast and all the posts in the community.
Guy Whelan
Hi Guy - sadly sometimes google will mark posts for review thinking they are spam - and the sad part is I don’t get an email saying the post needs to be reviewed and approved - I must just log in and manually check as such there are some that sit in approval for a couple of days. Nothing I can do - if Google thinks it is questionable - then it is flag for review. You could always email me letting me know if your post is not showing. Otherwise you need to wait until I get around to reviewing those posts.

https://9to5mac.com/2016/10/20/iphone-7-qualcomm-intel-
modem-cellular-performance/
Seems when Apple made the new iPhone 7 and 7+ they did not use the same manufacturers chips for their Modems. They sourced from Qualcomm and Intel. The Qualcomm chips are in the Verizon and Sprint and Sim-Free Models. The Intel Chips are in the T-Mobile and AT&T models.
And people have been doing some testing - mind you pre iOS 10.1 testing. So results may have changed some - but initial testing showed some clear results - those with the Qualcom chips had a clear and significant Modem performance edge over the intel chips. At least when there is any drop off in signal level. I will not go over the MB through put vs Signal strength - other than to say - it did not take much drop off in signal level to start the intel version dropping in data through put.
One other thing - the Qualcomm chip versions are only sold in the US, China and Japan. Everyone else is getting the Intel version.
So not all iPhone 7’s and 7 pluses are created equal.
35:08
https://www.cnet.com/news/yes-your-32gb-iphone-7s-
storage-is-slower-but-heres-why-it-doesnt-matter/
And another place where there is a difference in performance is in Write speeds. Seems the 32 GB iPhone 7 and 7S write at a significantly slower speed than the 128 and 256 GB versions. Read speeds - what you do must often - is the same. But write speeds are a quite a bit different.
So if you were looking for another reason not to get the 32 GB version - the write speed is one - but really a small one. In day to day use it is read speed you need to be concerned with and that again is the same.
But when you initially are setting up your iPhone 7 or 7+ from backup - yeah at that point you will be glad you have the faster write speed for the 128 and 256 GB versions - of course - writing 100 GB to the 256GB version is still going to take longer than writing 20 GB to the 32 GB version.
Technically there is a difference between the 32GB version and the 128 and 256 GB versions. Which if you listened to me and did not get the 32 GB version you would not need for me to try and down play the differences and could just say whew - glad I got the 128 or 256 GB version. An really glad if it is the Verizon or Spring or Sim Free 128 or 256 GB version - because that one is the bomb.

Hey Rob!
I just got my Best Buy preorder for the Watch series 2 space black stainless steel!! All I can say is I looooove this thing! I can't believe how much faster it is than my series zero aluminum. I like the weight too. Good upgrade!

Ok - so now it is time to go over the changes of Watch OS 3.x
To start with the biggest change - when you tap the side button - it is now a quick link to a new dedicated dock - no longer to list of friends.
There are new complications and watch faces, including fitness-focused options.
- Swipe up on a watch face for Control Center, and swipe left or right to switch faces.
- A new Breathe app helps you relax - except when I don’t actually have time to breath and relax - having it remind me I need to - makes me even more stressed. Which then makes me get up and get a cookie. I eat when I am stressed.
- Send text messages directly from your Apple Watch by scribbling letters on the screen. Which is something I have used a few times and well - it has a ways to go to understand my finger writing. But when it works it is cool.
- New apps: Reminders, Home, Find My Friends, heart rate - all came with iOS 3.0
When you use the workout app - there is a quick start feature - which speeds up getting your workout started.
Emergency SOS was added - you just hold down the button for a few seconds and it can dial 911 on your phone and notify your emergency contacts.
One of the best new features how ever for WatchOS 3.x is the speed in which apps - especially 3rd party apps open.
As mentioned earlier watch OS 3.1 was just released and for the most part it is mostly about bug fixes.
Here is a list of key things that changed with 3.1
- New option to replay bubble and full screen effects in Messages.
- Messages effect can play with Reduce Motion enabled.
- Fixes an issue that could pause the notification for Timer complete to be delivered twice.
- Resolves an issue that could prevent Apple Watch Series 2 from fully charging.
- Resoles an issue where Activity rings may disappear from the watch face.
- Fixes an issue that prevented Force Touch options from appearing in some-third party apps.

http://bgr.com/2016/10/21/iphone-7-plus-vs-
google-pixel-speed-tests/
We are starting to see some speed tests between the Google Pixel and the iPhone 7+ come out.
In Bench mark tests - not even close - the 7+ more than doubled the single core bench mark score 3,488 to 1,565 - ouch. And remember single core is where most apps live.
But in the multi core speeds the 7+ was still a lot faster - 5590 vs 4103 - higher is better.
In real world testing - some launching of stock apps went to the 7+ - some went to the Pixel.
But when it came to games - forget about it - the 7+ destroyed the Pixel — this comes back to those bench mark scores - and many games push the smartphones limits.
The most likely smartphone that will finally beat the 7+ in speed tests will be the 7S+ or 8+ or Pro or whatever the next gen 5.5 inch iPhone is called.
But for now - nothing is close on the bench and in real world for graphic CPU intensive applications.
On the front for light weight apps - then the 7+ and pixel were pretty even.

We have a new dog and he is supposed to be taking turns sleeping with the different boys - the last few night I say who you sleeping with and each time he ran into my Son Henry’s room - and the it dawned on me - oh yeah - he has the Casper Mattress - smart dog.
Casper Mattresses are a mix of Latex foam and Memory foam. No noisy springs to be woken up by when you master or significant other gets up in the middle of the night. Time Magazine even named it one of the best inventions of 2015.
And with Casper you get a 100 day risk free trial period. You don't like it you get your money back and they come and pick it back up and donate it to a charity.
- Casper is an obsessively engineered mattress at a shockingly fair price.
. Twin Mattresses are just $500, they also have Twin XL for $600, Full for $750, Queen for $850 and then King and Cal King - for $950. That is less much much less than my iPad Pro setup. And as I said you have 100 days to return it risk free. And if you go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code tii - you will save $50 off those prices - Terms and Conditions Apply.
This is an american made mattress with delivery right now for the US and Canada only and it is free delivery. And When said mattress is delivered - it is from UPS - in a squarish box that you think no way is there a mattress in there - But you get a cool little tool to cut open the package and the mattress opens up and expands to form. It is really cool Just google Casper Mattress unboxing.
Winter is coming and snuggling down with a thick blanket or two or three is made even better when the Mattress under those blankets is really comfortable.
Again to Save $50 off of the prices I mentioned go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code t i i - all lower case on the promo code. again casper dot com / tii - promo code tii to save $50 - thanks Casper for the great mattress and for sponsoring this show.

VOICEMAIL - JOE_KY_feedbk_android_HI
Hi Rob,
Last year I made my first apple purchase, an iphone 6s plus. I am blind and apple seemed to be the most accessible to the blind of all my options. I was just about to purchase an ipad pro when the iphone 7 was introduced without a headphone jack and now I'm wondering if its a mistake to invest in a ecco-system that is eliminating the headphone jack. I need to switch my headphones quickly between devices, including devices without a lightning connector and bluetooth lag is a killer for voice over users. will apple be eliminating the headphone jack from ipads and computers in the near future? How can I efficiently switch a pair of headphones from analog and digital test equipment, audio recording devices, PC, and ios products in the future? They say Android is catching up in accessibility and I'd like to have to learn as few operating systems and their accessibility gestrues as possible. Should I get a windows tablet instead of an ipad proe? This headphone jack issue is really concerning to me. thank you for yur advice,
Regards,
Greg A, Pennsylvania
Greg - My recommendation is stick with iOS - and if you get an iPhone 7 or 7+ get a dongle or adapter for our 1/8th inch headphones so you can use the same headphones between devices. No it is not perfect - but I think you will find on Accessibility features - iOS is still a much better solution than Android.
Hi Rob,
As per the last episode I tried a while back to do a credit card dispute for a project I funded that was a no show and they told me since it too long ago I was S.O.L. Is the law 6 months or something? Many projects take so long what can we do are we supposed to dispute it one or two months after the delivery date and even by then by the time we paid to the time that we're disputing six months or more he could have easily passed.
Regards,
Michael

For Kickstarter this week I was going to talk about Auxillite - which is a dongle type solution for adding powering and listening to your iPhone 7 and 7+ - I say was - because then some others warned me not to and to read the comments. I have reached out to the project developer for comments per the concerns some folks had - and If they reply before the next episode I will mention their reply then.

Hello,
This is a message from Kickstarter’s Integrity team. We’re writing to notify you that the iLDOCK - charge and listen to iPhone 7 at the same time (Suspended), project has been suspended, and your $31.00 USD pledge has been canceled. A review of the project uncovered evidence that it broke Kickstarter's rules. We may suspend projects when they demonstrate one or more of the following:
- Offering purchased items and claiming to have made them yourself
- Presenting someone else’s work as your own
- Misrepresenting or failing to disclose relevant facts about the project or its creator
Accordingly, all funding has been stopped and backers will not be charged for their pledges. No further action is required on your part.
We take the integrity of the Kickstarter system very seriously. We only suspend projects when we find strong evidence that they are misrepresenting themselves or otherwise violating the letter or spirit of Kickstarter's rules. As a policy, we do not offer comment on project suspensions beyond what is stated in this message.
Regards,
Kickstarter Integrity
Seems the issue was with claiming to be MFI certified.

Fourth-Quarter-Results.html

Apple had their quarterly conference call. One thing to remember - that last quarter they had one additional week of new iPhone sales vs the same quarter a year ago.
Tim said results were very strong and high end of their guidance - but in the guidance range.
And then Apple reported a lot of downs vs same quarter a year ago - Revenue, Profit, EPS, iPhone Sales, iPad Sales, Mac Sales and Gross Margins All down again vs the same quarter a year ago. The only up was Services - up 24% to $6.325 Billion.
Starting with iPhones -
iPhone sales for Calendar Q3 2016 were - 45.5 Mil vs 48.1 mil a year ago — or a 5.4% decline vs the year ago quarter which is smaller than the previous quarters 15% decline - I mean if you are really looking for a positive spin that is. Also Back in July the Anal-ists estimated that last quarter would be 43 Million units sold on average. However right be the earnings call the analysts average estimate was 45.3 Million - which is pretty much dead nuts on. So Congrats to all of the anal-ists as a group.
But specifically T. Michael Walkley from Canaccord Genuity with a guess of 45.65 Million iPhones sold last quarter as being closest to the pin.
Tim Cook said iPhone 7 supply should equal demand before end of quarter - but iPhone 7+ demand will likely remain greater than supply. And that right now Apple was very supply constrained with regards to the 7+.
For the iPhones the ASP were actual up at $619 in Q3 2016 vs an ASP of $595 in Q2 2016. While that is up - it is still lower than the traditional range of $650 to $700 we had seen the 6 quarters prior to Q2 of this year.
iPad sales for last quarter were 9.3 Mil units. vs 9.9 Mil the year ago quarter. This seems to be where the iPad is setting into for a base of sales in the non-holiday period.
Turning now to Cash - Yeah seems Apple has all of it - for a total of 237.6 Billion Cash over 91% which is not in the US vs 93% 3 months ago that was not in the US.
That said Apple still Returned over $9 Billion to Investors last quarter.
If you are an investor you will be getting two quarters, a nickel and two pennies for each share you own of Apple stock assuming you are still an owner come early November.
Looking forward Apple gave some Guidance and a key part of the guidance has Apple returning to growth this quarter. After 3 quarters of the opposite of Growth year over year.
An interesting fact-toid - Tim said that there are 2 Billion with a B requests a week for Siri.
Again - numbers were lower all around vs the year ago quarter. Same as last 2 quarters. But again Tim seems to think we will see growth for this quarter. Which I thought Wallstreet would be giddy about - but in after hour trading Apple was down about $2 - so go figure.
I should point out I own Apple stock. I am clearly long on Apple for full and fair disclosure.
At the end they have a Q&A with the Anal-ists - and one I guess does not want to be on Tim Cooks Christmas card list. Steven I got the biggest Milunovich asked
quote does Apple today have a grand strategy for what you want to do? I know you won't tell us what it us, but do you know what you want to do over the next three to maybe five years? Or is it more a read the market and quickly react?
unquote
Or Put another way - Tim - do you know what you are doing - or a you just winging it hoping for the best and reacting when things don’t work out.
Or put another way - Tim do you have a clue? Was essentially what Steven Who is going to get those big ones cut off Milunovich asked.
Tim was pretty terse in his response - and rightly so - he said
quote
We have the strongest pipeline that we've ever had and we're really confident about the things in it. But as usual, we're not going to talk about what's ahead. And if you don’t like that answer you can shove it up your pipeline.
unquote
Ok - I might have embellished a bit on the last part of the quote - but you know that was what he was thinking.
But if that was not enough Steven I don’t ever want to be allowed to step foot in Apple Campus Milunovich asked the following followup.
And this is no joke
Quote
But in terms of your approach I guess to new products, do you have a strong sense of where technology is going and where you're going to play?
unquote
Which is like Asking well - do you have strong sense of where technology is going and where you’re going to play - which is about as insulting a question you could possibly ask the CEO of the largest Tech company or any tech company period.
To Which Tim responded - quote Actually Steve-oh - we define our road map once a year on take your child to work day. We let the kids pick the next round of products each year - And then afterwards we have a bunch of Scary clowns chase the kid around campus whose picks last year did not pan out - it is a wonderful time and has helped make us the biggest tech company in the world. unquote
Which was actually slightly less ridiculous of an answer than the question Mr Milunovich asked - what the heck was Steve-Oh thinking.

Hi Rob
I ordered my Black 256gb iPhone 7 Plus from Sprint on September 10th and it arrived yesterday on September 27th. It was very painless activating my new phone as an upgrade using my old phone.
My old phone was the 64gb Gold iPhone 6 Plus and this is a crazy upgrade. I'm glad I took your advice and went for the 256gb version. Total out of pocket for the new phone is roughly $365 dollars to get the financing program started. I owe about $680 but if I send my old iPhone 6 Plus back to Sprint they will credit my account all but .90 cents of the month payment so roughly $400 for the top end iPhone 7 Plus, can't beat that deal and without a two year contract. I'm thinking about just sending Sprint roughly $23.00 to pay off my obligation along with my old phone and all I'll be pay is my month service plan.
Love the show, I just figured I'd share the deal I got.
regards,
Keith W
