Rob,
With the passing of Steve Jobs the visionary how long do you think apple will remain being the leader in new technology and new ground breaking products.like the iphone.
Robert
Hi Robert,
Remaining the leader in new technology requires a few different thngs.
It requires a mindset / culture to do this - That is something by all acounts that Steve had in place prior to his retirement.
It also requires capitial investment in R&D - This is something Apple has done over the years and clearly is in a better place to spend money on R&D then anyone else since they have more money than anyone else. This link is to a post talking about the massive resources Apple is putting towards the custom chips they produce.
http://techcrunch.com/2011/10/09/apple-1000-engineers-chips/
And it requires being able to slaughter the cash cow if you think there is something better you can do. Apple is doing this with the iPod line. Once the reason for Apples stock take off. Now barely a few minutes of a 2 hour presentation.
So how long Apple stays in front - is really up to how long Apple can keep the culture Steve Jobs left them in place. And with Tim Cook in charge by most accounts - that could be for a long time.

Rob W

Hope you can use it.

Hi Rob,
I think you have to preorder directly from sprint. What do you know?
Regards,
Eric Y
Hi Eric,
The Apple site gave two options - one was for those that were upgrading and already a Sprint customer. That one let you pre-order.
The other one was for those that were either adding a line to a Sprint account or were new to Sprint altogether. For those of us in the second group it said to visit the Apple store on the 14th - it would not let you pre-order.

UPDATE 3: It looks like for new Sprint Customers - you can not pre-order - It says the following:
At this time, we are only taking online iPhone orders for current Sprint customers upgrading a phone on an existing line. If you're a new customer, or simply want to add a new line to an existing account, please select this option and click "Continue". There you'll see how and when an iPhone can be purchased at your local Apple Retail Store.
Which then takes you to this message:
In order to purchase iPhone with a new Sprint account, or to add a line to an existing account, please visit an Apple Retail Store.
So at least for those jumping to Sprint from another carrier or Adding a line - no Pre-Order for you. Walkins only.
UPDATE 2: Pre-Ordering is now live - Go HERE
Update 1: Engadget is reporting on a 3:00 AM ET launch for pre-ordering. I will stay up and see if this comes to pass.
---------------------------
Sometime between 2:00 AM ET and probably 9:00 AM ET the iPhone 4S will be available to pre-order.
When it is available I will send out a push with the URL to pre-order and also update this post.
Here are two links from the iPhone Pre-Order in June 2010:
--------------------------------
If you will want to pre-order for delivery to your house you will need to go here - http://store.apple.com/
If you want to reserve an iPhone 4 for pickup at your apple store you will need to go here - http://store.apple.com/us/go/iphone4
----------------------------------
If the past is any indication it likely will be around sunrise on the East coast.
Again this post will be updated as soon as I have more info.

Hi Rob,
I am very excited about upgrading from my iPhone 3G to a 4s!
Two questions:
What time on Friday will they start taking preorders?
And do you think an iPhone 4 case will work on a 4s?
Thanks
Dave
Hi Dave,
Last time around the pre-orders started around 8:00 AM ET.
Here is my post on this last time.
I will be keeping an eye out for this tonight and early tomorrow and will put up a post on the main blog page going over the iPhone 4S pre-order status.
Per the Cases for the iPhone 4 working on the iPhone 4S - All indications are that the two are identical size wise - so iPhone 4 cases should work fine with the 4S.

...I am sooooo tiried of reading blog post after blog post about how the iPhone 4S is a marginal update, or barely an update. Or you pick the negative retort. Because when I sat there on Tuesday and was reading about all the new features being announced - I was thinking - Wow this is as big an update as the iPhone 4 was vs the 3GS. So I need to ask - What are all those that are bemoaning the iPhone 4S really upset about? Seriously - I am asking. Because I don't have a clue what they are thinking.
It actually made it to the point where I started to question my sanity on this matter - so I decided to put together the chart you see above.
CLICK HERE FOR THE LARGER VERSION
What I did in this chart was put in all the new features of the iPhone 4 vs what was in the iPhone 3GS. And then also all the new features of the iPhone 4S vs what is in the iPhone 4. And when I was done with the chart - I felt a lot better - No I am not crazy - the iPhone 4S really is as big an update from the iPhone 4 as the iPhone 4 was from the 3GS. Still don't believe me - then go back look over that chart again. Actually I find when looking at all the changes objectively - the 4S is actually a bigger update than the 4 was.
Clearly calling it the iPhone 4S - in some peoples mind is the real reason they are feeling it is not as big an update - which is pretty lame for so called tech journalists. Sure - I would have liked to see it called the iPhone 5. But either way it is still a major update. Some reasons I think Apple went with the 4S vs 5 name is that with the 3G and 3GS - they both had the same case. So to with the 4 and 4S. Also in 2012 - with the 6th iPhone (dare not say iPhone 6) - it is likely going to be LTE - it will also likely not be released until the fall of 2012 as well. And when this 6th iPhone is released - it will NOT be called the iPhone 5 - it will be called the iPhone 4G - as in LTE = 4G. And guess what it is likely going to be in the same package as the 4 and 4S.
I read in a post where someone said they are just waiting for the iPhone 5 - well guess what the iPhone 4S really trully is the iPhone 5 - it is just not called the iPhone 5. Per all those rumors about teardrop packages, wider and bigger screens and 4G be it LTE or WiMax - those never made any sense this year. And other than LTE - I don't see any of them making sense next year.
So next time you read a post about someone bemoaning the iPhone 4S - send them the link to the chart above and ask them to justify their position based on that REAL info.
UPDATE: I updated the graph to better illustrate all the specs of the iPhone 4S. In the graph now the top 7 iteams are all improvements vs the 4. The last 8 items in the 4S column are all new just to the 4S. Plus the last 9 items for the 4 are ofcourse also in the 4S - incase you want to compare vs the 3GS. No mater how you slice it the 4S is a great device.
UPDATE2: iFixit has opened up an iPhone 4S and sadly it is still at 512 MB of RAM. Chart has been updated accrodingly.

Rob,
The specs look great for the iPhone 4S.
I am getting one, but any specs on the front facing camera?
Regards,
Thomas
Tuscaloosa AL
Hi Thomas,
It does not look like the front camera changed.
From Apples site we find the following.
Front camera with VGA-quality photos and video at up to 30 frames per second
Which is exactly the same as what they have listed for the iPhone 4 front facing camera.
So until iFixit or someone else rips one apart and says it is different than the old front facing camera - it looks like we will have to assume it is the same.

Congratulations on getting so many predictions correct on the iPhone 4S.
I had a question from a reader on my blog. I hope you can help. He is married to a blind woman who is very excited about Siri on the iPhone 4S. But she uses VoiceOver on the iPhone and wants to make sure that VoiceOver will work with Siri.
For example, if she asks Siri, "What are the best Hungarian restaurants in Tuscaloosa?" and Siri pulls up the results, will VoiceOver read the results to her?
I am planning on testing this when I get the iPhone 4S, but they would like to know this before the launch date if possible.
Thanks in advance for your help.
In this video about Siri - at about the 57 second mark they show a blind user using Siri.
It sure looks like it will be a great addition for Blind users.
More to come on this for sure.

Is Siri in iOS 5 or is it only in iPhone 4s?
Thanks
Hello,
Siri is only for the iPhone 4S at this time. It is likely the next iPad may also get it.
But for now only the iPhone 4S has the processor and RAM needed to run it.

Hi,
Just port your number over to Sprint and go with them for the iPhone 4S.
What you save per month for the plan will make up for the ETF - early termination fee.
But I think the articles above and people upset are being disingenuous - We all signed up for a 2 year contract when we got the iphone 4. We all knew the rules and now when they don't change them again in our favor some are upset.
Again in this case - fine - people can cancel their contract pay the ETF and move to another carrier - where you can get the lower price.
But I don't think being mad at either Apple or AT&T is warranted - at least not in this case.
But going to a droid is just cutting off ones noes to spite ones face.

Hi Rob,
I'm leaving on a trip 10/15, and really want to try and get the 4S 10/14 before leaving (upgrading from 3GS).
2 questions:
1) any difference between getting it from Apple vs Verizon?
2) any suggestion as to whether I'm more likely to be successful pre-ordering with supposed mail delivery 10/14, or going to store (apple or verizon) morning of 10/14?
Thanks much!
Emory
Hi Emory,
I am in the same boat as you - I also leave for a trip on the 15th.
What I am doing and recommend you do is on the Morning of the 7th - Reserve your iPhone 4S to be picked up at a local Apple Store.
The key reason I recommend this vs the Verizon store - is there is no telling how many the Verizon stores will get. Yes - a reservation is supposed to mean it is reserved - There was a great Sienfeld episode on that. But if push comes to shove and there is a dearth of iPhone 4S's who do you think is getting short sheeted - the Apple Store or the Verizon store?
Definitely do not go with the delivery method - as nothing would be worse than it being delivered to your front step after you left on a trip. And even if they don't deliver it to your front step - do you really wanted it sitting in a warehouse somewhere while you are gone - it could get lost there - just seems like to much potential for something to go wrong.
Finally - One last reason to get your iPhone at the Apple store. Last year when the iPhone 4 came out - I ofcourse was one of the first ones to get it at the Apple store. When I went to my car and turned it on - I had an error / warning message about it being over heated. I took it back into the Apple store - they quickly swapped it out with a new one - as they had extras they could do that with. Others I heard from that had issues on the first day at AT&T had issues getting a replacement right away.
So figure Murphy will strike and go with the Apple store as our safest bet.
Good Luck.

I had a few people email in asking on my thoughts on the Kindle Fire. Here is what will go up on the show tonight:
I would love to tell you today's show was delayed so that I could get more info on the new Amazon Tablet - but the reality is it had more to do with Allergies and contents of my stomach not wanted to stay there. Neither alone is good when trying to record a show but combined there was nothing I could do. I bring this up because with the Kindle Fire - and it priced at $199 - I am sure there are more than a few Android tablet makers that had the same issues with their stomach that I had last night. In a nut shell - I think this kills the rest of the Android tablets. And it will have its impact on the iPad as well - but more so with other android and none iOS tablets. The Fire from what was shown today is a very impressive device at just $199. It actually has a better resolution display than the iPad at 169 Pixels per inch vs 132 for the iPad. Hmm - Now that seems to be a place where the iPad 3 might be able to improve upon. In Some ways the Fire has raised the bar in a way Apple has to respond.
While Apple has been given grief about having just a home button the Fire - does not even go that far - just a power button - and not even buttons for volume. Expect that to be a point of contention for some. But really - with all the Android people poking sticks at the iPad and iPhone for lack of inputs and buttons - I am not going to go there with the Fire. It looks to be a minimally designed device that has some horse power and is simple to use - i.e. the iPad model. And it is less than half the price. Or half the price of the 16 GB iPad 1 when you can get them. The Fire is just 8 GB and it is really meant as a streaming device - in other words all your content is up on the cloud. For some that will be an issue - for many it will not. If you like the 11 point multitouch with the iPad - the 2 point dual touch of the Fire may be frustrating.
Is this an iPad killer No - I don't think such a thing exists. Is it a killer of all none-iPad Tablets - Yes - I think it is. This takes the low end of the market and blows it away. The iPad already has the high end. And everyone in between well they have their stomach feeling like mine was last night.

Well it is about Fracking time - Apple has finally sent out the invites for their next iPhone event - and it is October 4th and on the Cuppertino campus as had been rumored the past week or so.
But lets look at the artwork - for some subtle hints - that Apple likes to do with past invites.
The Phone icon has a 1 in the red circle - this may mean there will only be one new iPhone announced.
The Tag line however is really where it gets interesting. "Lets TALK iPhone" As in lets talk to the iPhone. As in this may go with those rumors / speculation that the iPhone 5 would have special speach recoginition features - ie from Siri and Nuance. That would also likley mean 1GB of RAM and of course the new A5 Processor.

Hi,Rob.
I jailbroke my iPodTouch4 and my iPhone3GS, using Jailbreakme.com. Unbelievably simple and quick.
But now, with iOS5.0 quickly coming up, I want to un-jailbreak(the iPod, at least)and experience the new iOS.
Can I just download iOS5,when it comes,or do I have to get rid of the jailbreak first? And,if so,could you let me know the best way to go about it and the steps?
What I hate to lose most from the jailbreak are the ability to make different folders for my photos and, even worse, the hot spot on my 3GS. But, my iPodT4 has gotten slow and kid of buggy. So, I definitely want to get that ready for the iOS5.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
Take care,
Ray
Hi Ray,
In the recent past - there has been no issue in upgrading from a Jailbroken iOS device to the latest version of iOS. And all indications are that trend will continue when iOS 5 is publicly released. This means all you will need to do is update to the latest version of iOS and your jailbreak will be blown away and the last version of iOS (5.0) will be installed on your device. This will of course mean ALL your jailbreak apps will also be removed when you do the update.
If you wany to actually get your devices where they are no longer jailbroken prior to iOS 5 upgrade being available - you can do an update to iOS 4.3.5 today. This also will blow away your current jailbreak and remove all jailbreak apps and features. And that of course mean no more tethering with a jailbreak app. Please note once you update to iOS 4.3.5 - you will not be able to jailbreak that version with a non-tethered jailbreak. So don't do this unless you are 100% committed to give up the jailbreak apps.
Best of Luck.

Hi Rob,
Is there an untethered jailbreak for IOS 4.3.5?
Cheers,
John
Hi John,
So far (9/22/11) there are only Tethered Jailbreaks for iOS 4.3.5. Red Sn0w 0.9.9b1 is the latest version of Jailbreak that actually does jailbreak iOS 4.3.5 and also iOS 5 - but again it is a tethered jailbreak. Which means you need to be connected to your computer when you reboot the iOS device.
It does not sound like there will be an untethered jailbreak specifically for iOS 4.3.5 - as current efforts seem more focused on iOS 5.x

Hi Rob:
My iPhone 4's screen went haywire today, all of a sudden. The screen is zoomed in and I can see about a quarter of the regular size screen. And I cannot move around the screen. As a result, I cannot swipe the top or bottom bar or key in the PIN code to unlock it. I tried a hard reset and restoring it, deleted a couple of apps I had updated earlier today but to no avail. Do you or your listeners know what is causing this and how to solve it? Thank you for all your effort in putting this excellent podcast together.
Sam
Hi Sam,
I had this happen to me once when I was playing around with the Zoom feature in the Accessibility settings.
To Un-Zoom (or change the Zoom) - With 3 fingers, double-tap and drag up or down.
To Move around the screen - drag three fingers while zoomed.
And once you change the zoom resolution back to normal you may want to turn off zoom.
To Turn off zoom go to the Settings App --> General --> Zoom --> Turn "Off"

Hi Rob,
I heard AT&T is going to start throttling data for their highest users. I just jail broke my iPhone two months ago, and I'm tethering with PDA net. Any indications what a " highest user " would be? I'm averaging about 5 to 6 gigabytes a month?
Thanks
Lamer
Hi Lamer,
You would definitely be in their highest users group. AT&T has said in the past the majority of their users - use much less than 2GB a month and anyone over 2GB is in their top 5% of users. So I would imagine you are in their top 1%. Sorry.
There is always Sprint - Hopefully - that offers unlimitted and un-throttled bandwidth - for now. Well again hopefully as far as the iPhone goes that is.

Hi Fred,
I need to ask a few questions.
1. Did you try upgrading the apps on iTunes first and then doing a sync?
2. Are you using any iTunes store apps you get via jailbreaking? In other words do you have any pirated Apps?
3. Are you getting the error message about not being able to connect the iTunes store on your iPhone via the iTunes app or from your computer?

I used words with friends to get the blue backround and then kept swapping tiles over and over until I got the ones I wanted! Photoshop mobile added the border and I used photo chop to put the 2 pictures together. Hope you like it!
Also if anyone wants to play me, my username is bonneyt... Bring it!

Hi Rob,
Do you know of any jailbreak apps that send a call directly to voice mail. Sort of a "do not disturb". Also, any apps that block individual numbers. I'm a newbie jail breaker.
Thanks.
Lamar
Hi Lamar,
There is a jailbreak app called - CallBar - that puts incoming calls in a small bar and keeps them from interupting what you are (angry birds) doing.
Then there is an app called - Call Blocker - Which sounds closer to what you want to do - it blocks calls from either All numbers or specific numbers (crazy Ex's).
You might also want to look at the service YouMail - which does not require jailbreaking. This also alows for you sending people right to voicemail - it is a free service and they have an app that goes with it - Aptly named the YouMail App
I would recommend starting off with YouMail to see if it does all that you want - and if not then add in the jailbreak apps above.

Hi Rob,
I think one of your podcasts talked about an App that could read a web site to you. So it would basically turn the text on a web page into audio. I'm taking a class where I'm assigned lots of reading of long articles online. It would be oh so great if I could listen to these while I run or drive instead of having to sit still and read them.
Yours truly, multitasker at heart
Jennifier
Hi Jennifer,
I believe we were just talking about the Voice Over features built into to iOS 4. That said there are a few different apps in the app store for doing Text to Speech for Websites:
Knowtilus Pro
SpeakText
Voice Reader Text to Speech
TextToSpeech
I only put up the link to the Knowtilus Pro app as that is one I own and have used. So maybe I mentioned it on the show in the past.
It works really well reading out a website from Text to Speech. The voice is a little on the mechanical side - but it does a good job taking most any webpage and reading the text - including working for the Tii website.
One thing that separates it from many of the text to speech apps - is this one does not require copying and pasting the content of the site. You just go to the URL and tap on "Say". You can also have an option for a small video window showing a computer animated females head reading the text - Yes that is a little bit of fluff.
I really like that it works in the background - so you can find a long article on the web and start it reading and then put the app into the background and then go and do some other tasks.
It is not the cheapest App as it is $9.99 - but it works.

Rob W

Hi Rob
I made TII a chocolate birthday cake using Cake Doodle on my iPad. It is an amazing app. My granddaughter loves it. You can make all types of cakes, - you add ingredients - cut up butter, squash strawberries, break eggs - then mix and into the oven. When it is cooked there are lots of decorating possibilities as you can see!.
Happy 4th birthday for TII for the 29th April 2011.
Keep up the good work.

Dear Rob.
I remember some time ago you asked for suggestions on the ways to hold the iPhone on a plane (remember the barf bag stand, that never worked for me). Well I travel every week, NJ to CO and often hold it (arm hurts after a while) or lay it flat on the table (leaning over it make the back hurt) while I listen with my Bose headphones. Today it struck me! The Bose headphone case has two bumps for the earpieces that could serve and a nice back to rest the iPhone on for viewing. Viola, it fits and stays put in the case. If you have a set of these, the pocket for the extra connectors is attached with Velcro so you can move it to make sure it holds your iPhone in place. Sweet!!

I had a reporter from Inc.com ask me a few questions on what I thought the iPhone 5 would be like and some other questions with regards to business users. Below is his questions and my answers. I will be talking more about the iPhone 5 in coming episodes.
1. What do you think will be 5-6 new features of the iPhone 5?
1. Upgraded camera to an 8 Mega Pixel camera module. In iOS 5 - Apple has added a few features that are focused on the camera - such as using the volume button as a shutter control and adding quick access to the camera from the lock screen - so an upgraded camera for the iPhone 5 that will be running iOS 5 seems to be a lock.
2. Upgrade of the CPU to the A5 - which is the same processor in the iPad 2. This follows last years process when the iPad 1 had the A4 Processor first and then when the iPhone 4 came out it also had the A4. Apple will also likely bump up internal ram from 512 MB to 1 GB - but likely will not even mention this. Other than the CPU - Apple does not like to talk much about the internals of the iPhones.
3. For Business Travelers - especially on Verizon - the biggest upgrade will be in making it a true world phone. With a chipset that allows for both CDMA and GSM use from the same phone. This chip set is already in the Verizon iPhone 4 - but the Verizon iPhone 4 is not optimized to use both GSM and CDMA. The iPhone 5 - will be designed from the ground up to be a true world phone.
4. Enhanced Voice Controls / Voice Recognition in iOS 5 - just for the iPhone 5. This will take advantage of some features from their Siri acquisition and also from work with Nuance. Expect much greater voice recognition and voice controls with the iPhone 5. Something to be appreciated by the business person on the go.
5. Enhanced Video out / HDMI out - through a dongle and Mirroring of the screen to an external projector - like with the iPad 2.
6. It will NOT be an LTE / 4G phone. LTE is just not widely available yet - especially when you look at the hand full of test markets that AT&T just has. So at this point - it does not seem to make much sense for Apple to go with an LTE phone on Verizon or AT&T. Plus with both of them restricting data usage - with an LTE smartphone you could burn through your monthly data cap in less than an hour.
2. For business users, is this going to be a no-brainer upgrade? Why or why not?
Yes - Especially for those that travel internationally. Having one phone that can work on any US or international carrier will make going to the iPhone 5 an easy decision. Additionally the advanced voice control / recognition options are likely going to making working on the go easier and safer especially when driving.
3. What can a business user do to prep for the new model in terms of
support in the workplace, expected costs, etc.?
The biggest thing to do to save on costs at this point is to hold off upgrading to new handsets until the iPhone 5 is available. If the goal of IT is to get everyone using the same handsets - then upgrading now just weeks before a new iPhone is available will mean companies will have to pay the full unsubsidized pricing for the iPhone 5.
Per migrating from an iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS to the iPhone 5 - there really is not much to do - other than to make sure you keep backing up your phone on a regular basis. Apple makes upgrading to a new phone drop dead simple.
The most important thing a business user can do - is get approval to purchase the next iPhone now. It is likely going to be sold out or hard to get ahold of for many months when it does get released. So if you want one early - best to get your approval ducks in a row now. If you don't get approval until a few weeks after it is launched - you may not be getting one until sometime in 2012.
4. How has the Android OS encroached on the iPhone in terms of
business features?
I don't believe it has. Supporting the iPhone in a business environment has been a focus of Apple. From security features that have been added with each update of iOS to additional support for exchange. Including in iOS 5 - wirelessly sync'g Exchange tasks. Also for IT departments - it is easier to support the one or two iPhone handsets and one version of iOS - then it is to support the 70+ handsets on Android and the half a dozen versions of Android OS.
On the Android front you hear now of more and more mal-ware and other security issues. This is something you just don't have to deal with on the iOS side. Add in all the different version of the Hardware manufacturer tweaks to the Android OS - and you get a greater and greater fragmentation of the Android ecosystem - which just means more work for IT managing all that.
5. Can Apple possibly keep the momentum going with each new iPhone in
terms of capturing market share, etc.? How will they do that?
Apple will also likely add Sprint to the list of carriers in the US that will get the iPhone. Right now the iPhone 4 even though it is 14 months old is still the number one selling smartphone handset on both AT&T and Verizon. The iPhone 5 will be the number one selling handset on AT&T, Verizon and now Sprint - thus increasing the number of units sold each quarter to new records.
I don't think Apple is overly focused on overall Market share. But rather on increasing the numbers sold each quarter. Expect stock outages through out College basketball season.

Hi Rob,
Yesterday I became the target of someone texting me that I don't know, and is eating up my number of texts. I called At&t and their options were rather limited. Change phone numbers or pay $4.95 a month to block up to 15 numbers. Being the cheap bastard that I am I figured there might be an app for that.... not my cheapness, but blocking texts from your phone. Ever heard of one??
|
Hi Steve,
There are not apps for either - Blocking nor cheapness - I am sad to say. Ok - well that is not 100% true - there is the Free App a Day App.
Per Text Spam - Getting texts from someone that you do not want them from is a big issue - and that AT&T charges you to block spam texters is really a big load of @#$%.
I can't speak per how every one of the 190+ carriers that has the iPhone deals with this.
(NOTE - if you are on a carrier other than AT&T and they have a better / free solution for blocking Texts - Please add a comment below.)

Hello Rob,
The schools are afraid of texting, Facebook, cheating using google. Is there a way to use assignment books, ebooks, calendars memos in a way that schools would accept?
Sincerely,
Hi Cindy,
Absolutely. And it is pretty easy at that.
First you should set up an iPad or iOS device where you can restrict access to install new apps.
To do that go to the Settings App - then General - then select Restrictions. You will need a passcode set up for this. Make sure you note it somewhere safe. If you forget it - only doing a complete factory restore will get you access to change anything.
Next you can turn off access to Safari, Youtube, the Camera, Facetime, iTunes and Ping.
So by doing this you could restrict the access to just the apps you install and want the students to use.
You can also restrict your wifi network to block facebook and other sites - and let them use safari.
So there are ways to make the iPad school safe.
Does this mean they will not figure a way around it - no - some are going to be too smart for their own good.
But overall you can make an iOS device school friendly if needed and very easily at that.

I used Photogene (app) to insert the white frame, blue background, and thought cloud with "Tii Baby!"
I used PB Lite (app) to insert the snowflake.
I used DoodleBuddy (app) to paint in the Tii text, then add a world globe for good measure.

Hi Rob,
With the new iPhone hopefully being released right around the corner what is ATT's policy towards purchasing if you still have until August 2012 before completing your contract?
Do they give you any help at all?
Regards,
Steve R
Hi Steve,
First thing you should do is check your status for an upgrade on your iPhone by calling *639# - (Which is *NEW#)
Once you hit call - you will see the following Message:
What is supposed to be a short time later (your results may vary) you will get a text message sent to you that will look something like this:
This message will let you know when you can upgrade to a new iPhone at no additional cost, along with what the cost would be now to upgrade. Above is the message I received when I checked on July 31st 2011. I just sent another request and once it comes in I will see if there is any difference and update.
Please note when you are able to upgrade is not just based on a fixed date for all customers - how much your monthly plan is will effect when you are eligilble to upgrade at no cost - so make sure you check from your phone.

Dear Rob,
I need to be able to teach a class on how to I use the iphone 4 and certain apps.
I bought the cable that Apple sells to mirror what's on the Ipad 2 but it does not work with the iphone 4.
I know there are some solutions if I jailbreak my phone but I really want to leave it like it is if anyway possible.
For years I have watched Steve during every keynote a demonstrated exactly what I want to do but I have yet to figure out how. I guess he must have a jailbroken his I-phone. Thanks for any help.
Patrick
Hi Patrick,
You need to jailbreak if you want to mirror your iPhone 4. There is an app called Screensplitr (free) that you will want to get and you will also need iDemo on your Mac or PC.
If you want to mirror to a projector in the classroom - you will need the app - displayout - also in cydia store - it is $2.99. and you will need the official 30 pin to VGA connector with that which it sounds like you have already.
Per Steve Jobs iPhone - yes - he was using a special iPhone for the presentations.

Hello Rob,
Would you please suggest an App for reading documents/web pages when you do not have A network connection. I'm a new iPad 2 owner..
Thanks much.
Kind regards
Mike
Hi Mike,
Instapaper is the app you are looking for.
It allows you to:
Save web pages for later offline reading, optimized for readability on your iPhone or iPod touch's screen. Featured by Apple and critically acclaimed by top blogs, newspapers, and magazines!
Great for long articles and blog posts that you find during the day and would like to read, but don't have the time when you find them. Save with Instapaper, then read later when you're commuting, in a meeting, or waiting in line.
New in 3.0: You can now browse and save articles that your friends liked on Instapaper! Find friends on Facebook or Twitter, or via email.
Sending to Instapaper is supported by over 140 other iPhone and iPad apps! You can even send long emails to Instapaper.
And if you run out of articles to read, or haven't had time to find any, you can browse the Editor's Picks for more, curated by hand from the Instapaper community's most-saved stories.
CORE FEATURES:
- Saves most web pages as text only, stripping away the full-sized layout to optimize for the iPhone and iPad screens - Distraction-free reading environment gets out of your way so you can focus on the content - Everything you download is then available **OFFLINE**, so you can read whenever you want, even on airplanes or on Wi-Fi-only devices away from internet connections
It is an app that many many of the Tii listeners have recommended over and over again.
Enjoy.

I Received a text message (See Image) from AT&T offering up 1,000 free rollover minutes at no cost. All I needed to do is Text back "YES"
Not that I am the paranoid type - but I felt it was best to call AT&T and confirm it really was a text from them and not some Text spam - that when I sent "YES" back to them I would be charged $1,000 from someone in Albania.
AT&T was kind enough to confirm it is a real offer and only sent to certain customers. AT&T also said it was a "Me Too" offer - meaning if you did not get this offer but wanted it - you just need to contact AT&T and tell them you are aware of this offer and would like the 1,000 extra rollover minutes. See the Image for the exact wording of the offer. So if you did not get this and want the extra 1,000 rollover minutes give them a call from your iPhone to 800-331-0500.
UPDATE - AT&T customers can also just text "YES" to 11113020 - and that will get you the 1,000 - so no need to call AT&T if you have Text messaging turned on for your iPhone. Thanks to Bob and Ray for the heads on that.

Hi Rob,
I noticed on some jailbreak tutorials there is talk about making sure you back up your SHSH blobs before you re-jailbreak or update software. This way you can restore back to an older version of iOS. Is this something your really need to do? Or are you ok to just jailbreak your iOS device and move forward.
Regards,
Stephen
Hi Stephen,
Thanks for the question.
I made the decision not to mention SHSH blobs on my tutorials - as that just tends to complicate things and confuse people.
Reality is you do not need to do it. It is just an insurance policy where you are hedging against the dev team not being able to jailbreak the next version. It is just needed if you want to do a jailbreak again in the future after Apple has patched the current exploit and assuming the dev team can not figure out how to re-jailbreak the new version.
So far - the Dev team has been able to jailbreak every version. I am lazy personally and choose not to do the SHSH backup and instead place my faith in the dev team to figure out future jailbreak exploits.
If you must must must have the jailbreak - ie if you are using your phone unlocked - then yes SHSH is important - if you are just using it for 5 icon dock and backgrounder and jailbreak is not life or death - then it is not needed to do the SHSH back up.
Hope that answers your question.

Rob-
Long time listener.... I jailbroke my iPad using Spirit (32 gig, wifi only), and everything went fine. I installed ONLY Categories and Backgrounder.
After turning off the iPad (holding the on/off button, and then slide to power off, and turning back on, the appearance of everything is very messed up. The background image is no longer there (only black), and the docked icons at the bottom are all bunched up on the left side of the screen at the bottom.
I had to restore it and reload everything. And because I'm a curious fool, after restore, turned off/ on iPad again, and same thing happened.. before I restore again, just wondering if you've ever heard of this problem, and if there is a solution short of restoring again!
Thanks, Ed
Hello Ed,
Sorry to hear of your issue this is the first I have heard of this one.
I am betting it is the categories app - as backgrounder is working fine for me and others I talk with.
I would suggest you rejailbreak and see if categories is still there and if so remove it.
If that does not work then a full restore would be suggested.
Jailbreak apps in Cydia tend to be a little hit or miss (on in this case Crash) for the iPad.
Read the description and if it does not say it is for the iPad - there is a chance it may mess up your iPad.

Do I have to pay again to get push with the Tii app?
Thanks!
Chad
Hi Chad,
No you do not need to pay again.
But you do need to go through the process of the upgrade again - including clicking on purchasing it again.
As long as you use the same iTunes account you purchased it from originally - you will be told after trying to purchase it again - that you already have purchased this before and then will be asked if you want to download it for free. Which obviously you will tap yes.
This should also be the case with any other in app purchases you have made.

From all that responded about their experiences with iOS 4.x and the iPhone 3G that is the one that seemed to work the best and it was the last version of iOS that works for the iPhone 3G.
iOS 4.1 seemed to run real slow for the iPhone 3G

Rob,
I need some help.
I have a 3GS running 4.3.3 jailbroken with jailbreakme.com. I recently tried to synch and transfer purchases to my PC with Itunes and was unable to do so because Itunes error message says Itunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone . And recommends RESTORE to factory settings. Same error on three PCs running different versions of iTunes (thru 10.4).
Wonderful.
My last backup was in June, which hopefully I can access, but how do I back up data (notes, contacts, media purchased in iTunes store, etc.) before restoring if I cannot do so with iTunes?
If I restore, then Ill be at 4.3.5. How would I get back to 4.3.3 to jailbreak
TIA
AG Lang
Hi AG,
Do you have WiFi Sync installed on your iPhone? (Update: WiFi Sync may be causing the issue - and you should try uninstalling it - especially the client on your computer that works with it)
See the instructions at their site - http://getwifisync.com/
If you do not have Wifi Sync - then uninstall iTunes and re-download / install the latest version of iTunes and try the sync again.
If those two tips don't work let me know. But they should help most people.
And Yes - iTunes typicaly works fine with jailbroken iPhones as far as sync'g goes.
What ever you do - do NOT restore your iPhone. Not yet.

Here's something done with an iPhone4 camera + Photoshop mobile (to crop the original image) and then an iPad App called Doodle Buddy to "skywrite" and smudge the logo.

Hi Rob,
I'm looking for an app recommendation. I've been trying to find an app that lists and maps bike trails but have been pretty disappointed with what little I have found.
I'm interested in this to help me find new trails for riding (and/or running) both near home and when I'm traveling.
Do you or any of your listeners have suggestions for a good app - even a great web app?
Thanks,
Tim
Hi Tim,
One App that was recommended by a listener in the past is the App - Trails - GPS Tracker. There is a lite version you can try out.
Look over the ratings and feedback for both the free and paid version - especially the paid version before purchasing to make sure it meets all your needs.
Trails - GPS Tracker - seemed to get better overall reviews than the other App like this in the app store - EasyTrails GPS 4 - which also has a free version
Good luck with these apps - and let me know if you have tried or do try either app.

Rob W

Hi Rob,
I did the "drawing" with Magnetic Alphabet. Then rotated, cropped, and resized with PhotoGenie. All was done on the iPad but made for an iPhone.

hey Rob!
I was wondering is there a way to add HTML signatures from the iphone/ipad?
instead of that one liner about "sent from my iphone"?
Thanks!!
Laura G
Hi Laura,
Per the Signature of emails.
Without jailbreaking there is a way to get a very customized signature.
http://www.coolgeex.com/adding-html-signature-to-your-iphone-4-without-jailbreaking-it/
This is a non-jailbreak work around to get a customized signature with images and links. See screen shot image of one I was able to set up in this post. The Twitter and Facebook images and the main libsyn images were all hot links. So it works very nice.
This does require setting it up with that sites free service - and then saving a bookmark / webpage icon on your desktop. This is not adding it to your standard email app. This requires initiating the email from the special icon / link via safari.
Now if you just want to remove the default message you get from Apple - you can go into the Settings App. Then to Mail, Contacts, Calendar. Then scroll down to the signature and edit it there.

Rob,
I have included some artwork I made on my iPod Touch using Jack O'Lantern (that's the correct spelling for the app).

Hey Rob,
I jailbroke my phone yesterday and was suddenly addicted to my phone once again. I have a First gen, 8gb, 2G, 3.1.2 Iphone.
Yesterday everything went well on my jailbroken phone, however today the cydia app on my phone keeps crashing. I have tried turning my phone off, and back on; using SBSettings to respring my phone, connecting the phone to my computer to rejailbreak, is the only other option to connect to itunes and restore to factory settings?
I have a feeling this is the only option but wanted to use it as a last resort..
Thank you so much for the great podcast!

Hi Jessica,
Sorry to hear of the issues you are having.
One option if Cydia stays open for any period or time is to go in and remove the most recent cydia apps you installed. Chances are there is a conflict between a couple of apps.
If you can not - then you will need to restore.
Next time you jailbreak - install - cydelete - first - this will let you delete Cydia apps without needing to use cydia - so if this problem comes up again - you might be able to solve it by deleting apps first.
Good luck.

I started out using the free app Substrate to generate the background artwork. The app doesn't DO anything, but it does it exquisitely. When Substrate had created a pattern that I found pleasing I performed a screen capture on the iPad. I opened the saved screen capture in PhotoPad, another free app, and used my RADtech stylus to rotate and annotate it.

iOS 5 Beta 6 is now available for over the air download.
As with all iOS Beta updates - there is an accompanying iTunes update.
Process for updating is the following.
1. Sync your iOS device with your computer.
2. Back up specifically your iOS device to your computer.
2.b If you have photos - make sure you download / sync those photos with iPhoto or your windows equivalent.
2.c Make sure your iOS device is fully charged or plug in a power source now.
3. Download the latest version of iTunes and install.
4. On your iOS device Go to Settings --> General --> Software Updates
and then check for the update and download.
5. Wait, and wait a little more, and then when it looks like it is almost done downloading - wait even more.
6. When you see the pop up book tap "install" unless you fell asleep in step 5 - in which case it will auto install after a minute or so.
7. Wait while it reboots - takes a few minutes.
8. Check to make sure you email, photos and other items are still there. They should be.
Unlike the last update - Apple is not recommending you delete all data - so this one is actually easier and faster than the last one when all is said and done.
I am playing with it now - and if I find or hear of any new features I will update this post. Of course if you come across any new features or bugs please put them in the comments below.

Hi Rob,
I've been one of those folks who have been reluctant to jailbreak my phone. Two things are scaring me away. First, your warning about the potential for problems. This is my only phone, and I use it for business, and would be hurting if it were out of commission for a few days. But I'm just about over that, and want to jailbreak, except for the second item.
I would want to have a good solid backup before I did jailbreak. But I have been unable to back my iPhone up lately. It will sit in iTunes for an hour, syncing, and just be 30% done. I just had to cancel the last 4 or 5 syncs. Any thoughts on what would cause it to take so long to backup?
I've also noticed that my orange Other is over 2 gig now. Is that out of line? I'm afraid to restore, now, too, because the last actual backup is so old. Worse though, is that iTunes seems to think that the last backup was just the last time that I had actually cancelled. So if I restore, would it draw from a corrupt backup?
Any advice would be very much appreciated!
Randy

Hi Randy,
First up definitely do NOT restore or Jailbreak or upgrade EVER if you can not backup first.
I would suggest if you have lots and lots of photos in your camera roll - to sync them to a computer and then delete out all the photos in your camera roll on your iOS device. That sometimes will greatly speed up the back up.
Same if you have videos in the camera roll - essentially get it do nothing in the camera roll on your iOS device and you should see a great improvement in speed. I would also look at how many voice memos you have and again get them sync'd up on your computer and then turn off the sync'g.
Regards,
Rob W
