Remember that Bakers dozen of Battery life improvement tips for iOS 7 that I went over a few weeks ago on the show - well I put them together to make a snap guide - so if you have the snap guide app - just search for walch - W A L C H - in Snapguide and you will see my battery life saving guide and also my how to podcast from an iPhone guide. And of course if any of you have done a snap guide - iOS related or not - let me know and I will mention it on the show. Since well snap guide is iOS related - so even if your guide is for a better double chocolate chip brownie - let me know.
Hi Rob,
Thanks for the heads up! Your heads-up make your app way more valuable than the price!
Regards Robert F
And Robert is talking about the push message I sent out Tuesday Morning about the Apple event actually being streamed live. Yeah Apple. and if you have the Tii App - you would have or should have received said push.
0010 - Apple’s October 22 iPad And Mac Event Now Official As Press Receive Invites | TechCrunch
Normally on these events I try to put the milk at the back of the store and you need to get all the way through the store to get to the breaking news of the event. But this time we will put it up front. So what was announced at the event.
Well to start off there was the video with the dots about designing things for how they feel and to delight the user. And how it takes time to do this and there are lots of no's to get to each yes. This was the Designed by Apple in California video we saw back at WWDC in June.
Then Tim cook came out with shirt untucked and did his update on numbers and rah rah
First was on the iPhone - 9 million iPhones first weekend. Old number - no new info on that. Then the rah rah video from Launch day of the iPhone 5S and 5C from different apple stores around the world.
Per iOS 7 - 5 days after it launched there were over 200 million iOS devices running iOS 7. Today 64% of iOS devices are running iOS 7.
There have been 20 Mil listeners of iTunes Radio - about 1/3 rd of the number of podcast listeners.
There is now over a million apps on app store and over 60 billion App downloads. Which works out to over $13 Billion paid out to Developers. That means also - lots and lots of free app downloads.
Getting into the meat of the presentation - First up was the update on OS X and Craig Federegi - this time with shirt untucked. I will not go over all of the OS X stuff.
Craig did comment about his untucked shirt - I think he has been listening to the show. Actually last event he was the only one with his shirt tucked in.
One feature from Mavericks - is sending your maps locations right to your lock screen on your iPhone - which is nice.
Another great new feature of Mavericks is it is Free - as in nada - nothing - no cost to you. And available today. Wow I mean not Wow on the Today part but on the Free part. Did not see that coming.
Then Phil Shiller with shirt untucked came out and talked about the new Mac BookPros. Better specs lower prices. Nothing about internals and fan noise. Drat. But the website for Apple and the macbook pro show it still with the asymmetrical fans introduced at the last update.
There was also some Mac Pro Porn - that led us to about the 40 minute mark of the presentation.
Then Eddy the Stuff Que came out with shirt untucked and talked about iLife apps -
New update to iPhoto for Mac and iOS.
New update for iMovie for iOS 7 and you can do picture in picture and speed up and slow down video on your iPad or iPhone. Sweet - I know recently we had questions about the best app for picture in picture video editing - it now seems to be iMovie is the answer or at least one of the first answers.
And there is a New Version of Garageband - finally. New look - new design. I need to hold off upgrading for a bit until I am sure it still is ok for Podcasters and well this podcaster in particular. I am excited and scared to try it out. Maybe I will wait until Thanksgiving to upgrade to Mavericks and the new Garageband - then at least I will have 4 1/2 days to get things figured out on my production side. If you are a podcaster and use Garageband I recommend you wait a bit.
There are also New versions of the iWorks suite - Numbers, Pages and Keynote.
Then finally at the 52 Minute mark the unthinking happened - An Apple employee came out on stage with his shirt tucked in. It was Roger Rosner - and actually he was the only Apple Employee at the WWDC even that also had his shirt tucked in - Roger my friends is the real Maverick at Apple. A Shirt tucked in, not going to drive a hybrid - likes red meat type of Maverick.
Tim came back at the 57 Minute mark and he led us into the iPad announcements.
But first he mentioned that Over 170 Million iPads sold - reaching that mark early this month. That means last quarter Apple sold less than 15 Mil iPads last quarter - probably right about the 14.6 Mil mark they had from the quarter before. Maybe later in the show we will get into speculation of iPad and iPhones sold last quarter which Apple will announce next Monday. Really not much speculation on the iPad number. It is somewhere south of 15 Mil and likely north of 14 Mil. But still all time said was earlier this month we sold our 170 millionth iPad. So it is possible if earlier this month meant two days ago - it is possible When Apple reports numbers the sold less than 13 Mil iPad's last quarter.
Tim as he likes to do - showed a chart on Tablet Usage share - As he proudly stated the iPad is used 4 times more than all those other tablets combined.
And today there are over 475,000 iPad apps. Not apps that just work with the iPad in stretched mode - but Apple that are either only for the iPad or have universal mode. Like the Tii App.
Then Tim showed a video of how people are using their iPads. It r was a nice mix of examples of where people are using the iPad to consume content and how some are using it to create content.
Then Phil came back to talk about the new iPads. Thinner lighter - more powerful - That sums up what Apple is now calling the iPad Air - Which is the new name for the 9.7 inch iPad and it has the smaller bezel - that had been shown in leaked photos all over the place for the past couple of months. the iPad Air is just 7.5 mm thick - 20% thinner than the 4th gen iPad maxi. The full size iPad used to be 1.4 pounds - now it is down to 1.0 pound. As expected the A7 Chip is the heart of the iPad Air and it is the 64 Bit processor that you have in the iPhone 5S - so All Android tablets will soon be destroyed in the benchmark tests - even if they keep cheating and try turning it up past 11. Oh And the M7 Motion processor is in the new iPad Air as well. Graphics are 72 x more powerful than original iPad. And CPU power is 8x more powerful than the original iPad.
Another areas of improvement is Faster Wifi. Mimo tech for wifi - which means Multi in - multi out - and it means faster streaming of content. The iPad Air also has improved / Expanded LTE coverage / bands.
But still the same 5 MP camera. There are dual mics to quote help with siri unquote and of course the key trademark of the iPad - it has 10 hour battery life.
Per colors available for the iPad Air - there is Silver / white and space grey / black. There is no Gold for the iPad Air.
Pricing Still starts at $499. And they will Start shipping Nov 1st in a whole bunch of countries Actually Apple had over 40 countries listed. Including the top 10 countries listening to this show. The US, The UK, Canada, Australia, China, Germany, Netherlands, Singapore, Sweden and France. You actually have to get to the 13 th country for top countries downloading this show - New Zealand - before you find one not getting the iPad Air on Nov 1st.
What was not announced - Well No Touch ID for the iPad Air. That was one of those yes it is / no it is not rumored features leading up to the event.
Then we got into the new iPad Mini. And my gut was wrong - they did add a Retina Display. And it Also gets the A7 Chip. Yup I am buying one for the wife. Camera stays the same at 5 MP. Per colors available there are two - Silver/ white and Space Grey / Black. No gold for you. Pricing for the new iPad Mini is now $399 - and it will be available later in November.
the iPad mini first gen dropped to $299 for pricing.
So the iPad product line is
iPad Mini 1st gen $299. iPad 2 - Still around at $399, iPad Mini with Retina display at $399 and the iPad Air at $499. Those are all in 16 GB versions and wifi. There are LTE versions available as well - add $130 to the price and add $100 to the price to go up one storage level to 32 GB or another $100 to get to 64 GB or another $100 to get to 128 GB for both the iPad Air and new iPad mini 2nd gen. $699 for the 128 GB iPad Mini at 128GB - $829 when you add in LTE. Go to $929 for the top of the line iPad Air.
Oh yeah there are New covers and cases. Yada Yada.
A quick wrap up by Tim and then the event ended at the 84 minute mark. Good event on the iPad Mini side - was really surprised to see both the A7 and Retina for the iPad Mini - but as I said on a previous episode - if it had both I would get it and I will. I really did not think it would have both - but glad it did.
Essentially or not even essentially - actually the iPad Air and new iPad Mini have the same specs except for the size of the screen and size and weight of the units.
The Battery life is still listed at 10 Hours for both units - that did mean a slight increase in weight for the 2nd gen iPad mini from 0.68 pounds to 0.73 pounds - or 308 grams to 331 grams for the wifi unit. The depth increased a tad from 7.2 mm to 7.5 mm - again this is for the iPad mini. The Camera is identical to the iPad Mini first gen - so no change there. Only thing new is the 3X video zoom on the camera side that is.
And the big changes really are going from an A5 to an A7 and M7 processors and also to the Retina Display. And well going from $329 to $399 dollars - there is that too.
The big changes on the iPad air are going from an A6X to an A7 and M7 Processors. And then the lighter weight and new length x width and depth.
There is the improvement in Wifi and the improvement in LTE - but those are very minor changes for most.
So overall - if you were holding off getting an iPad Mini - this event was good news. If you have an iPad 3rd or 4th gen Maxi - I am not sure the iPad Air is going to cause you to rush out and get a new unit. But if you had an iPad 2nd or 1st gen and were waiting for a new gen iPad and one you can use for most applications instead of a laptop - then you are probably happy - but still not at a point where you have to upgrade - more that it would be nice to upgrade.
If you are an anal-ist - you probably are not happy.
As if
That is because there was no new category of product - no iWatch, No full on Apple TV, No iUnicorn so to speak.
What Apple did in this event is what they have been doing for years - incremental updates to their products.
But they did some things I think were important - they released major updates to their iLife and iWork suites and are making them free to all new iOS device buyers and all new Mac Buyers. And they made Mavericks free - which means they will be getting most usable Macs up to the same revision level in very short order - don't under estimate the impact that will have on the whole iOS / Mac interaction ecosystem.

Hi Rob,
I'm completely underwhelmed with "the biggest breakthrough since the original iPad" they made the side bezel about half as thick as it used to be… I hate that because it makes it hard to hold in portrait with one hand… they made it thinner, they changed the shape slightly, they made it lighter, and it has the new processors that the iPhone 5s has… Phish! I'd rather have a 4th gen
Regards,
Jason
Hi Jason thanks for your feedback. I think having rewatched the keynote now for a second time - and having gone over the specs vs the last couple of gens of iPads - I think Apple does have an issue in that their iPads are sooo good - not only are people using them more - but they are likely feeling no real need to upgrade to the new iPad. Sure some maybe even many listening to this show will not feel that way and will rush out to get the new iPad. But for most current iPad owners - the changes today are not going to be enough to get them to upgrade now - and that really is not to take anything away from the new iPad's - but rather to point out one of the issues with 4 Times more usage being on an iPad - is that people are using their iPads now and getting along so well that the iPad dominates tablet usage. It seems Apple is getting to a point where a 4 to 6 year window for iPad replacement may be the norm - and that means slowing iPad sales if Apple does not actively court those current Android users of Tablets and try to convert them to iPad users - Apple could see a decline in iPad sales yr over yr if they don't actively pursue non-iOS tablet users. That said again this is more a testament to how good the iPad was - not about the level of upgrade in the new iPads - which I think is great - especially on the iPad Mini side. But even my Wife said to me after the event when I explain what was new - that she is very happy with the performance with her iPad - when she gets it out of the kids or my hands.
If you don't have an iPad - then the new iPad's represent the best offerings to get. If you want a larger screen - get the iPad air - if you want something for more on the go / travel type usage - then the iPad Mini is the way to go - but both are great devices - both have the 64 bit processors and both have retina displays and both give over 10 hour battery life - and both are faster and more powerful than any other tablet out there.
Hi Rob,
I was wondering why apple failed to mention in the keynote, that you can configure the new iPad Air up to 128 GB? I think that is a pretty important feature. And why the lack of touch ID?
Regards,
Jonah
I was actually surprised to see that the iPad Mini had the 128 GB option - the 4th gen iPad already had the 128 gb option - so seeing it carried over was not surprising - but it was very pleasant to see it for the iPad mini. That means I could get my wife the iPad mini and put every picture of our kids on that for her. That is huge deal for her.
Per the lack of touch ID - it is very likely - that some of the rumors about production capability not being there yet for the sensors may have been spot on. If some time between now and say WWDC in June - Apple releases a version of the iPad Air and iPad Mini with touch ID - we know for sure it was a capacity issue.
If they wait until next year - it might just mean it was a road map issue. As in Apple just wanted to keep that an iPhone feature only for now.
Of course it could be a third issue - a Margins issue - as in Apple is doing all they can to keep up margins.
PLAY VOICEMAIL_DON_AL_APP_CRASHES
Hi Rob,
With regards to Episode 0285 and your solicitation for anecdotes for iPhone 5s crashes...
I have an iPhone 5s 64GB Silver/White for AT&T running iOS 7.0.2; and yes, I have experienced numerous crashes.
Most of the time, the crashes occur when I switch between apps i.e. the app that I land on or switch from crashes.
And every once in a while, SpringBoard crashes! I see the grey screen with black Apple logo that one sees when one boots up the phone when that happens. The interesting thing is that I was on a phone call once when it happened. The phone call continued uninterrupted while SpringBoard crashed and boots up.
My wife's iPhone 5 (White 64GB AT&T) did not seem to have any problems running iOS 7 (again, I don't have the version info but if I have to guess, it would be 7.0.2). At least, I am not hearing any complaints from her.
Anyway, overall, we, a family of 4 iPhones (and numerous other Apple devices) love the new look & feel & sound that comes with iOS 7.
Regards,
James.

The iPad Usage Trend Continues to Baffle Analysts - Patently Apple
Patently Apple had an article that falls into one of my favorite categories - Articles about how iPad usage continues to confuse Anal-ists.
From the Article - iPad owners use their devices most often when compared to other Tablet owners - duhhh - and an amazing 80% of iPad users are heavy users 10 or more times a day. In our house the two iPads are used so much by the 4 of us - that my wife complains she does not really have her own iPad. Something I hope to rectify shortly with one of the new iPad's announced today - shhhhhh - don't tell her.
From the Gartner report on usage quote Other tablet providers need to understand why owners of their tablets spent significantly less time on their devices unquote - Hint - because their tablets UI sucks and the ecosystem is far inferior. And the touch UI is laggy and the hardware feels cheep - and they really just wanted an iPad when they asked for an iPad - and did not want any tablet. Again - they wanted a GI Joe with kungfu grip and they got an Action Jackson syndrome. That is what happens when someone asks for an iPad and gets an Android tablet.
Still it shows that Gartner does not get it because they seems just as frustrated in trying to understand what I think is just so obvious to all of us. There is a big difference in the User Experience between the iPad and iOS ecosystem and that of the Android devices and their ecosystem with ecosystem in this case in air quotes.
iOS 7 Download Traffic Overtaking Netflix Inside Carrier Networks - Dan Rayburn - StreamingMediaBlog.com
Hi Rob,
Thought you'd find this of interest.
Greg in L.A.
And in this case this is referring to download traffic for iOS 7 actually surpassed that of Netflix on Carrier networks - when the iOS 7 upgrade was released.
Yeah - another reason to shy away from upgrading the first few days a new upgrade comes out.
iOS 7 on 71% of Apple Devices One Month After Launch | TechnoBuffalo
In the Apple event - Tim Cook said 64% of iOS devices had iOS 7 installed. But Mixpanel found for its users that number was actually at 71% just 27 days after the launch of iOS 7. Per their stats from a year ago - it took iOS 6 30 days to get to just 61% - so iOS 7 is definitely in higher demand than iOS 6.

http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/10/09/t-mobile-said-to-launch-global-data-in-more-than-100-countries
Hi Rob,
Think AT&T or V or S will also do this?
Dr. John M
And what Dr. John is asking about is per T-Mobiles announcement they would offer free global data roaming and texts starting Oct 31st. This is for more than 100 counties. This is for its simple choice customers - and there is no extra charge. For Voice calls the carrier will chafe a flat rate of 20 cents per minute when roaming globally. And yes this works with the iPhone. Check with your local T-mobile store for more details before heading overseas. And while it is for over 100 countries - it is not for ALL countries - so you will want to confirm with T-mobile if you are traveling abroad that where you are going is covered. Not that I am at all trying to downplay this - as it is a very very nice offer. Just want you to make sure if you are traveling to Albania or the isle of Mann - that you are covered and not just assuming your are covered. Again this starts on October 31st.
http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/10/17/att-unveils-5-data-day-passes-for-tablets
And speaking of Carriers and data plans. AT&T announced a $5 data day pass for cellular capable iPads - or put another way a $150 a month data plan. Hmmm put another way does not sound as good as a $5 data day pass. That day pass also gets them a total of 250 Megabytes of data for that day.
There is also another plan - that gives you 1 GB of data usage over a 3 month period for $25.
Still these plans kind of suck compared to what was originally offered for first gen iPad owners - which was a $30 a month unlimited data plan which you could purchase on a month to month basis from the settings app. AT&T yanked that as we mentioned on the last episode and that resulted in a class action lawsuit against Apple and AT&T which they recently lost.
Hey Rob,
I know that you fully back SquareTrade and that they are one of your show sponsors. Just wondering what your take is on other iPhone insurance policies. My wife and I are Verizon customers and are about to upgrade her 4 and my 4S.
For the past year and a half I have paid $9.99/month for the Verizon Total Equipment Coverage and a couple weeks ago my sleep/wake button stopped working. I took it to a Verizon store and they offered to mail me a replacement phone but couldn't swap it out in store and, of course, directed me toward the Apple Store without telling me that Apple wouldn't be able to swap it out either since my phone was past the standard one-year warranty that comes with the phone. Not knowing that, I went to the Apple Store and they, of course, directed my back to the Verizon store where I went and then just had them mail me one.
I got my replacement phone a couple days later and sent my defective phone back to Assurion or whatever in their nice box with the shipping already paid, etc. No deductible, I'm pretty happy. Now the phone looks brand new but has some issues and is obviously refurbished. No deductible is nice but I would rather have a phone that lives up to my standards after paying $9.99/month for a year and a half.
Would I be better off getting AppleCare+ for $99 and paying their $79 deductible if there's an issue? Or getting SquareTrade for $94 (via the Tii promo code discount and paying their $50 deductible? Are they all the same refurbished pieces of junk that are riddled with issues? I'm trying to figure this all out before we purchase our new phones next week...
I would also like to know your take on the best place to go to for trade-in! My wife's is a 32GB 4 and mine is a 16GB 4S. I've price shopped online and Verizon's Device Recycling Program seems like it would offer us the most money for our old devices with Best Buy and Apple Store right behind them. I know online and in-store are usually different ball games. Any idea who offers the best trade-in value on the spot? We just want to put the money towards two new 5S.
Regards,
-AAron M
Hi Aaron - I can tell you what I did - and that is I spent the $94 and got the Squaretrade warranty for my new iPhone 5S - by going to square trade dot com / tii - if you go to that URL - you get $30 off the 2 year warranty and again that means it is just $94 for you - and me. I think the Verizon and AT&T warranties are total rip offs. $10 a month for 24 months is $240 vs $94 + a $50 deductible if you need it. So yeah definitely go with Squaretrade dot com slash tii for your warranty. And unlike Apples warranty - if down the line a jailbreak is made available and you jailbreak - with square trade you are still covered. I have had many listeners in the past that needed to use their square trade warranty and their results were very positive. You can even bring your iPhone to Apple and get it repaired and they will reimburse you.
Per the question of reselling - if you main goal is getting the most money possible - ebay or craigslist - if you sell via craigs list - also set up your exchange in the parking lot of you local police station. You can not be too careful when it comes to selling via craigs list.

Hey Rob, this is Dave in Palm Springs California.
In episode 285 you ask if anybody was having problems with the blue screen of death on a 5S. I am raising my hand.
Whenever I try to copy something from Pages, Apple's wordprocessing, with the purpose of going to another program like, Mail to paste it, Pages crashes and I get the blue-screen-of-death, followed by a complete reboot of the iPhone.
Apple techs scratch their heads and tell me to reset all settings. That does not seem to help the matter and only infuriates me. Any suggestions?

PLAY VOICEMAIL - BEN_IOWA_LOCATION_BASED_REMINDERS
Hi Rob,
Thanks for a great show. I traveled to England, France and Belgium in the fall of 2012, about two weeks after the release of the iPhone 5. I bought the Verizon iPhone 5 on launch day. I knew that the Verizon iPhone 5 contained unlocked GSM radios inside it which would allow me to use the phone on most GSM networks in Europe. All I had to do was buy a prepaid GSM SIM card when I got there. Easier said than done.
When I arrived in London, I learned that the iPhone 5 used a nano-SIM which was fairly new at the time and I couldn't fine one from any of the carriers in London. I did some quick research and found that you could use a SIM cutter tool to cut down a regular SIM card to make it fit in the nano-SIM slot. I finally ended up paying someone from a small electronics shop to cut down a full size GSM SIM that I purchased from the mobile carrier called "3" (http://www.three.co.uk/).
The cut down card worked great in my iPhone 5 however I never saw LTE speeds in any of the three countries I visited. LTE rolled out much more slowly there that it did here in the States and I think it just wasn't available when I visited last fall.
A year later, I'm sure there is better LTE coverage and I'm sure it's trivial to find GSM prepaid nano-SIMs that will work in unlocked iPhones. I hope this story can help someone else.
best--
Rob
Hi Rob,
Did we lose the "Reader" function with the IOS7 update ? Or am I missing something in the settings ?
It seems to be missing in Safari and web articles that used to offer it.
This is evident on both an iPhone 4S and an iPad 3rd Gen., both running the latest version of IOS 7.
Regards,
SgtMac in Tidewater, VA.
Hi Sgt Mac,
You have to be on a site where there is a post for this to work.
And be on a specific post. Then Upper left of the screen next to the URL - tap on the symbol that is 3 lines same length with a 4th line shorter. That will switch you in and out of reader mode.
So it is still there - just not as prominent.

How to: Solve Keyboard Lag on iOS 7 - TechnoStop
If you upgraded your older iOS device to iOS 7 and you seeing a keyboard lag when you are typing - no you did not suddenly start typing faster - you are really seeing a lag - well at least some people are. And here is how to get rid of said lag.
Go to Settings - General - Reset - and select - Reset All settings.
No not reset network settings - but rather reset all settings.
When you do this your iOS device will reboot and ALL of your settings and all of your customizations will be set to default. That means if you mad the font bold - yeah - reset. Turned off parallax - yeah reset. Wallpapers - yup reset. But hey if all of a sudden you felt like you were typing way to fast for your iOS device - then this is something to look into.
iPhone 5s Reportedly Outselling iPhone 5c Two-to-One Since Launch - Mac Rumors
Still lots of reports and articles talking about the failure of the iPhone 5C and horrible sales of the 5C. And well they are pretty much BS - All of them spinning it negatively at least - some accounts show a 2 to 1 ratio of 5C to 5S sales - if that is true - that is outstanding for a unit that is nothing more than a year old iPhone 5 wrapped in plastic.
Those that expected the iPhone 5C to sell like hotcakes - well does not know much about iPhones or hotcakes. As I stated before on this show - I do not recommend the 5C to anyone - spend the extra benjamin and get the 5S with the 64 bit processor / better camera / touch ID / and a metal cases that looks elegant vs the plastic OMG look at me and these bright colors that is the 5C.

verizons-iphone-activations-support-36-million-sold-in
-the-september-quarter/
On the next episode we will be going over the Apple quarterly conference call
But we do have a little insight into how at least Verizon did with iPhone sales last quarter.
First up the iPhone was mentioned 4 times in the call. Which is twice the mentions of the last quarterly call.
The first time the iPhone was mentioned it was to talk about supply constraints of the iPhone.
The second time it was to say 51% of Smartphone activations were iPhones. that is 51% of 7.6 Million. That compares to 51% of activations the previous quarter for the iPhone of 7.5 Million smartphones. So the iPhone held its own at Verizon for the last quarter even though Verizon was severely supply constrained.
Chuck Jones at Forbes takes these numbers compares to last year and Kentucky wind ages for the addition of China, NTT Docomo and the 5C and comes up with an estimate of 36.3 Mil iPhones sold last quarter. To put that in perspective last year in that quarter there were 26.9 Mil iPhones sold. So that is quite a big jump - we will be going over the actual numbers on the next episode and will also see how the anal-ists did.
Per my thoughts - I think that 36.3 Mil sounds a little high - but then I have not been too good recently on these numbers. But for arguments sake - I will pin the number at 34.8 Mil iPhones sold. With at least 2.5 Mil being listed as Channel inventory fill.
I will say I think the iPad numbers will be lower than a year ago - which was 14 mil. I think Apple will actually report around 13.6 Mil iPad's sold last quarter.
We shall see on ep 287.

Hi Rob:
Read: Apple's iWatch and wait approach. Maybe they are right and Apple slips the NFC chip into the iWatch first. If so, this would be a brilliantly devious way to get iPhone 5S owners to buy an iWatch too.
Woody
Hi Woody - well one thing not mentioned / hinted at or even remotely brought up is wearables today. So no your wrist was not one of the things Apple wanted to cover in this event.
And that means no iWatch in 2013 and who knows if and when such a devices will be launched - but expect rumors about a Jan / Feb event for the iWatch to start in 3, 2, 1 - go.
Do I think if when Apple does an iWatch - that the iWatch would have NFC - nope - I am thinking by the lack of any NFC support - Apple is showing they do not believe in the tech. Like they did with mobile flash.
So don't hold your breath for any Apple device to have NFC anytime soon if ever.
We will talk about iBeacons on an upcoming episode and explain why the lack of NFC in the iPhone is not a bad thing and may be a really good thing.

Analist - Ming Chi-Kuo of KGI securities is lately getting a rep of hitting the nail on the head with his predictions. So what did he say prior to the Oct 22nd event - well that the thickness of the new full sized iPad would be 7.5 mm and that is a check.
That it would be 20% lighter. Well if you want to get technical it was 28.6% lighter - and that means more than 25% lighter - and that means Nope on the 20% lighter. Too far off to give him credit. He said it would have the 64 bit A7X chip and an 8 MP camera. Ummm - technically 2 nopes - It is the A7 processor - not the A7X - so that sounds like speculation and not insight. And the 8MP camera guess is just plain wrong.
He did get the iPad mini rumors right - saying Retina and the A7 chip. And he said no Touch ID for the iPads and no gold colors. So he got those correct.
Now he did go on to predict the Mac BookPros would get improved battery life to 10 hours - ummm - no.
So again this is an Analist that is supposed to be one of the best on his sources or in my opinion guesses - and he was less than 50% this time around.
http://www.unlockios7.com/2013/10/gold-ipad-mini-2-with-touch-id-photos.html?m=1
from Dan C - comes a link to pictures of an iPad mini 2nd gen with both touch ID and gold color - ummm Nope and Nope.
But the pictures are pretty.
http://www.tuaw.com/2013/10/17/facebook-ads-are-1-790-more-profitable-on-iphone-than-android/
Thanks to all that sent in the link to this next one which is titled - Facebook Ads are 1,790% more profitable on iPhone than Android. The company Nanigans which is one of the largest ad buyers - found that the return on investment of a Facebook ad on iOS is 1,790% greater than the same ad is on Android.
The company was actually hesitant to report their findings as per what it would mean for Android ads and the controversy it might bring. Essentially what this means is right now based on current CPM's for Android ads - you loose money when you advertise on Android - and you make 162 % more cash than you spend when that ad is on an iPhone.
Put simply - there is a positive ROI for advertising on iPhone Apps and a negative ROI for advertising on Android apps - or put even more simply - if you are still advertising on Android Apps you are an idiot and someone will soon have your job and you will be on unemployment and only able to afford and android smartphone.
http://www.apppartner.com/ios-versus-android-for-businesses-in-q3/
Good Technology whom we mentioned in the past - has a new set of iOS vs Android data available for mobile devices getting activated in the corporate world - and well it is iOS by a good amount.
In Q3 - 72% of mobile activations were iOS - 90% of tablet activations were iPads.
Android actually dropped from 30% in Q2 to 27% in Q3.
So once again iOS is showing it is the dominate force in the work world - and this has to do with the support and security built into iOS by Apple - and their efforts to go after the business marketplace.
PLAYVOICEMAIL - NEW_IPHONE_USER_QUEST_OTHER_WHAT_IS_IT
Hi Rob. I just sent a voice memo to you and was wondering if you received it. I'm sorry there was no subject, but that leads into my question. Obviously being blind, I use voice over to navigate my iPhone five. The mail app it's self seems to work just fine, but when I'm in another application and the share menu pops up, navigating the fields trying to send an email becomes very quirky and darn near impossible. I was wondering if any of your listeners had this problem or if you new of a way to fix it. Thank you for the wonderful show my friend, you have taught me quite a lot. Regards.
Blind Joe
Hi Rob,
I have a similar email issue with apple mail indicating 4 flagged messages on my iPhone 5 when there are none. If more messages are flagged the count increases appropriately, and when all flagged emails are deleted or unflagged the counter remains at 4. Called Apple Care, they suggested reset all settings, and then did a hard reset with no effect. When I upgraded from iOS6 to iOS7 there were 4 flagged messages, maybe just a coinscidence.
Still looking for the solution.
Regards,
Mike from Chicago
Hi Rob do you know how to prevent or fix my maps/gps from lagging?
I'm a truck driver and really depend on this app. I've never had a problem until ios7. I've had my iPhone 5 for over a year now and never once had this problem and I use it every day.
On the app it shows where you are all the time with a blue dot, sometimes it shows me somewhere else then 30 seconds later it catches up to where I'm really at. Any suggestions I would appreciate it. I did close out all apps and reset my network settings, still the same thing. Please help!
Regards
Robert
Hello Rob,
Have you had the issue where your voicemails are reappearing after being deleted? I have a 5s and this has been happening since launch. I have att and am not sure if this is a carrier or apple iPhone/ios issue. Can you ask listeners? Regards,
Joe

http://www.tuaw.com/2013/10/16/did-you-know-that-the-iphone-2g-is-a-collectors-item/
Do you have a pristine original first Gen iPhone still in the box - never used - just sitting around collecting dust? No - Of course you don't because if you purchased an original iPhone when it launched - you quickly removed said device from the box and you know used that wonderful shiny new magical device. But lets say you purchased two that day and and you put one under your bed and wanted to sell that never open / used iPhone 1st gen - how much could you get - well one recently sold on ebay for $1,999 - which sounds really impressive until you think about this.
If you took the $600 you would have paid back in June 2007 and instead purchased Apple stock - which was going for about $120 a share - you could have purchased 5 shares at that time. Which would mean today those shares would be worth over $2,500 or actually over $2,600 when you add in the dividends - so yeah - while getting $1,999 for something you paid $600 for way back in the day sounds good - it is not as good as what would have happened if you purchased Apples stock instead of the extra iPhone.
That all said if you do have an original iPhone sitting around and it is pristine condition and you still have the box. You probably could get more then enough for it on Ebay to buy a couple of new iPads.
EU Could Force Apple To Accept Universal Charger
One item / rumor out there was that the EU could force Apple to give up on the Lightening port and go with the far inferior micro USB port. It is likely if push comes to shove - Apple will just start shipping iOS devices with the micro USB to lightening adapter to get around the rules recently voted upon in the EU. This is one of those items we will likely hear about again some time in the future when someone from the EU feels they are not getting the attention they need - so they force an issue with Apple to get them the publicity said EU politician seeks. While I was not a big fan of Apple switching to the lightening port last year - I still think it is much better than the micro-usb port. I like not having to figure out which way to plug in the cord.
0055 - Baby monitor app texts you when baby is crying - Parent Buzz - Boston.com
For Parents out there with new borns - there is an app / baby monitor that texts you when the baby is crying - ummm Yeah. The app called WeMo Baby by belkin of all people - sync's the monitor up to an iOS device and runs off your homes wifi. Sorry - I just don't think this is the best idea - as it is not when your baby is crying that you are most concerned it is when your baby is possible choking that you are most concerned. Besides with my youngest child that was colic-y the app would have been blowing up my phone with text messages - My youngest son cried for 3 months straight.
Voicemail - Jonathan_issues_during_installation.
And what he is seeing is on the first home screen in the upper left there is an app kind of greyed out that is hovering over the app in the top left corner but offset more towards the side of the screen - I have not seen this on my devices running iOS 7.0.2 - which is what he was running on his iPhone 5. But if you have seen this let us know. Call or email the show at….

Hi Rob,
Is it ok to Tip Geniuses cash at the apple store? The last time I was helped by the Genius he really went above the call of duty and got me new phone. The time prior to that I was under the impression my laptop motherboard had to be replaced and was going to cost a few hundred dollars and they fixed it for free by cleaning out the earphone jack! Later I realized I should have tipped him but don't want to get him into trouble. Can Geniuses accept tips?
regards,
Keith W
Hi Keith it would be my guess they can not accept tips - well maybe it is ok in NY / LI - but out side of the NY area - where you basically tip for everything - I am guessing it is not ok.
But hey if any of my Apple Store associates that listen would like to write or call in un-officially and let us know the rules about tipping and the Guinness bar - it would be appreciated - 206-666-6364 - 206 -moon-dog or send that email to todayinios at gmail dot com.

And what this is - is an article saying that Mark Shuttleworth - the founder of Canonical - thinks that Apple is working towards a unified OS for both iOS devices and Macs.
My thoughts are no - I think they will move to be closer and closer with more cross over in feature sets - but I think future versions of OS X - will remain the Pickup truck - for the heavy lifting type applications - that you need the most powerful OS. And that iOS will remain the OS for the masses that is a lighter / less powerful OS that is ideally suited for content consumption and light content creation.
I don't see them merging into one - but I do see them becoming more complimentary to the other and having stronger and stronger cross over feature sets. I think this was indicated by Apple when they said Mavericks will be free to all - I think they want to get all users that can get upgraded to Mavericks up to the latest version - so as to make the interaction with iOS devices even stronger - and keep people locked into both platforms.

Hello Rob,
I thought this might be of interest to you.
Don from Guntersville Alabama
Of course it is. And this is about some exclusive iTunes content - well not just any iTunes content - it is about Lost doctor who episodes. These are the ones they just found this summer at a TV station in Africa. That seems rather a quick turn from discovery to iTunes exclusive. There are 11 episodes at a $1.99 each.
Thanks Don for the heads up on that.

Hi Rob,
I think my favorite part of the keynote this morning, other than the new devices, was all of the pot shots against Microsoft. It was fun watching Apple make fun of Microsoft's pricing model.
It just goes to show the difference between a hardware company and a software company. Apple gives away the software to promote their hardware. Microsoft doesn't have that option so they charge for it.
For the iOS devices, there were basically no surprises with the iPad Air, other than the name. I think the rumor mill had that figured out pretty well. I was surprised that the chips is an A7 and not A7X. I'm guessing that means the A7 has plenty of processing power to handle the larger screen in the iPads.
The one unexpected twist was that the iPad Mini shares almost all of the same specs as the iPad Air, except, of course, the screen size. It really makes for a more difficult decision of which one to get.
I was disappointed that there is no pre-order. I was really hoping to get one next Friday but I don't plan to stand in line to get it so I will just order it online and have it shipped.
Myron U
At this point I do not see a ship date or launch date for the iPad mini - just a Later in November mention.
