Dear Rob,
I need to be able to teach a class on how to I use the iphone 4 and certain apps.
I bought the cable that Apple sells to mirror what's on the Ipad 2 but it does not work with the iphone 4.
I know there are some solutions if I jailbreak my phone but I really want to leave it like it is if anyway possible.
For years I have watched Steve during every keynote a demonstrated exactly what I want to do but I have yet to figure out how. I guess he must have a jailbroken his I-phone. Thanks for any help.
Patrick
Hi Patrick,
You need to jailbreak if you want to mirror your iPhone 4. There is an app called Screensplitr (free) that you will want to get and you will also need iDemo on your Mac or PC.
If you want to mirror to a projector in the classroom - you will need the app - displayout - also in cydia store - it is $2.99. and you will need the official 30 pin to VGA connector with that which it sounds like you have already.
Per Steve Jobs iPhone - yes - he was using a special iPhone for the presentations.

Rob W

Hello Rob,
Would you please suggest an App for reading documents/web pages when you do not have A network connection. I'm a new iPad 2 owner..
Thanks much.
Kind regards
Mike
Hi Mike,
Instapaper is the app you are looking for.
It allows you to:
Save web pages for later offline reading, optimized for readability on your iPhone or iPod touch's screen. Featured by Apple and critically acclaimed by top blogs, newspapers, and magazines!
Great for long articles and blog posts that you find during the day and would like to read, but don't have the time when you find them. Save with Instapaper, then read later when you're commuting, in a meeting, or waiting in line.
New in 3.0: You can now browse and save articles that your friends liked on Instapaper! Find friends on Facebook or Twitter, or via email.
Sending to Instapaper is supported by over 140 other iPhone and iPad apps! You can even send long emails to Instapaper.
And if you run out of articles to read, or haven't had time to find any, you can browse the Editor's Picks for more, curated by hand from the Instapaper community's most-saved stories.
CORE FEATURES:
- Saves most web pages as text only, stripping away the full-sized layout to optimize for the iPhone and iPad screens - Distraction-free reading environment gets out of your way so you can focus on the content - Everything you download is then available **OFFLINE**, so you can read whenever you want, even on airplanes or on Wi-Fi-only devices away from internet connections
It is an app that many many of the Tii listeners have recommended over and over again.
Enjoy.

I Received a text message (See Image) from AT&T offering up 1,000 free rollover minutes at no cost. All I needed to do is Text back "YES"
Not that I am the paranoid type - but I felt it was best to call AT&T and confirm it really was a text from them and not some Text spam - that when I sent "YES" back to them I would be charged $1,000 from someone in Albania.
AT&T was kind enough to confirm it is a real offer and only sent to certain customers. AT&T also said it was a "Me Too" offer - meaning if you did not get this offer but wanted it - you just need to contact AT&T and tell them you are aware of this offer and would like the 1,000 extra rollover minutes. See the Image for the exact wording of the offer. So if you did not get this and want the extra 1,000 rollover minutes give them a call from your iPhone to 800-331-0500.
UPDATE - AT&T customers can also just text "YES" to 11113020 - and that will get you the 1,000 - so no need to call AT&T if you have Text messaging turned on for your iPhone. Thanks to Bob and Ray for the heads on that.

Hi Rob:
I heard that if one changes the font on a MacBook Pro (and I thought on the IPad as well), that battery life could be extended.
Do you know anything about this.
Thanks,
Scott
Hi Scott,
Sounds like an urban legend - file this one with waking up in a bathtub full of ice and your kidney is missing.
No I have not heard of that and can't believe it is true.
No - Make that - Won't believe it is true.
Actually I looked around for this rumor and could not find anything on it.

Hi Rob,
I noticed on some jailbreak tutorials there is talk about making sure you back up your SHSH blobs before you re-jailbreak or update software. This way you can restore back to an older version of iOS. Is this something your really need to do? Or are you ok to just jailbreak your iOS device and move forward.
Regards,
Stephen
Hi Stephen,
Thanks for the question.
I made the decision not to mention SHSH blobs on my tutorials - as that just tends to complicate things and confuse people.
Reality is you do not need to do it. It is just an insurance policy where you are hedging against the dev team not being able to jailbreak the next version. It is just needed if you want to do a jailbreak again in the future after Apple has patched the current exploit and assuming the dev team can not figure out how to re-jailbreak the new version.
So far - the Dev team has been able to jailbreak every version. I am lazy personally and choose not to do the SHSH backup and instead place my faith in the dev team to figure out future jailbreak exploits.
If you must must must have the jailbreak - ie if you are using your phone unlocked - then yes SHSH is important - if you are just using it for 5 icon dock and backgrounder and jailbreak is not life or death - then it is not needed to do the SHSH back up.
Hope that answers your question.

Rob-
Long time listener.... I jailbroke my iPad using Spirit (32 gig, wifi only), and everything went fine. I installed ONLY Categories and Backgrounder.
After turning off the iPad (holding the on/off button, and then slide to power off, and turning back on, the appearance of everything is very messed up. The background image is no longer there (only black), and the docked icons at the bottom are all bunched up on the left side of the screen at the bottom.
I had to restore it and reload everything. And because I'm a curious fool, after restore, turned off/ on iPad again, and same thing happened.. before I restore again, just wondering if you've ever heard of this problem, and if there is a solution short of restoring again!
Thanks, Ed
Hello Ed,
Sorry to hear of your issue this is the first I have heard of this one.
I am betting it is the categories app - as backgrounder is working fine for me and others I talk with.
I would suggest you rejailbreak and see if categories is still there and if so remove it.
If that does not work then a full restore would be suggested.
Jailbreak apps in Cydia tend to be a little hit or miss (on in this case Crash) for the iPad.
Read the description and if it does not say it is for the iPad - there is a chance it may mess up your iPad.

Hi Rob,
I just restored my iPhone as a new phone. I did not have a backup.
Do I have to pay again to get push with the Tii app?
Thanks!
Chad
Hi Chad,
No you do not need to pay again.
But you do need to go through the process of the upgrade again - including clicking on purchasing it again.
As long as you use the same iTunes account you purchased it from originally - you will be told after trying to purchase it again - that you already have purchased this before and then will be asked if you want to download it for free. Which obviously you will tap yes.
This should also be the case with any other in app purchases you have made.

Hi Steve,
iOS 4.2.1
From all that responded about their experiences with iOS 4.x and the iPhone 3G that is the one that seemed to work the best and it was the last version of iOS that works for the iPhone 3G.
iOS 4.1 seemed to run real slow for the iPhone 3G

Rob,
I need some help.
I have a 3GS running 4.3.3 jailbroken with jailbreakme.com. I recently tried to synch and transfer purchases to my PC with Itunes and was unable to do so because Itunes error message says Itunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone . And recommends RESTORE to factory settings. Same error on three PCs running different versions of iTunes (thru 10.4).
Wonderful.
My last backup was in June, which hopefully I can access, but how do I back up data (notes, contacts, media purchased in iTunes store, etc.) before restoring if I cannot do so with iTunes?
If I restore, then Ill be at 4.3.5. How would I get back to 4.3.3 to jailbreak
TIA
AG Lang
Hi AG,
Do you have WiFi Sync installed on your iPhone? (Update: WiFi Sync may be causing the issue - and you should try uninstalling it - especially the client on your computer that works with it)
See the instructions at their site - http://getwifisync.com/
If you do not have Wifi Sync - then uninstall iTunes and re-download / install the latest version of iTunes and try the sync again.
If those two tips don't work let me know. But they should help most people.
And Yes - iTunes typicaly works fine with jailbroken iPhones as far as sync'g goes.
What ever you do - do NOT restore your iPhone. Not yet.

Hi Rob,
I'm looking for an app recommendation. I've been trying to find an app that lists and maps bike trails but have been pretty disappointed with what little I have found.
I'm interested in this to help me find new trails for riding (and/or running) both near home and when I'm traveling.
Do you or any of your listeners have suggestions for a good app - even a great web app?
Thanks,
Tim
Hi Tim,
One App that was recommended by a listener in the past is the App - Trails - GPS Tracker. There is a lite version you can try out.
Look over the ratings and feedback for both the free and paid version - especially the paid version before purchasing to make sure it meets all your needs.
Trails - GPS Tracker - seemed to get better overall reviews than the other App like this in the app store - EasyTrails GPS 4 - which also has a free version
Good luck with these apps - and let me know if you have tried or do try either app.

hey Rob!
I was wondering is there a way to add HTML signatures from the iphone/ipad?
instead of that one liner about "sent from my iphone"?
Thanks!!
Laura G
Hi Laura,
Per the Signature of emails.
Without jailbreaking there is a way to get a very customized signature.
http://www.coolgeex.com/adding-html-signature-to-your-iphone-4-without-jailbreaking-it/
This is a non-jailbreak work around to get a customized signature with images and links. See screen shot image of one I was able to set up in this post. The Twitter and Facebook images and the main libsyn images were all hot links. So it works very nice.
This does require setting it up with that sites free service - and then saving a bookmark / webpage icon on your desktop. This is not adding it to your standard email app. This requires initiating the email from the special icon / link via safari.
Now if you just want to remove the default message you get from Apple - you can go into the Settings App. Then to Mail, Contacts, Calendar. Then scroll down to the signature and edit it there.

Rob W

Hey Rob,
I jailbroke my phone yesterday and was suddenly addicted to my phone once again. I have a First gen, 8gb, 2G, 3.1.2 Iphone.
Yesterday everything went well on my jailbroken phone, however today the cydia app on my phone keeps crashing. I have tried turning my phone off, and back on; using SBSettings to respring my phone, connecting the phone to my computer to rejailbreak, is the only other option to connect to itunes and restore to factory settings?
I have a feeling this is the only option but wanted to use it as a last resort..
Thank you so much for the great podcast!
Jessica

Hi Jessica,
Sorry to hear of the issues you are having.
One option if Cydia stays open for any period or time is to go in and remove the most recent cydia apps you installed. Chances are there is a conflict between a couple of apps.
If you can not - then you will need to restore.
Next time you jailbreak - install - cydelete - first - this will let you delete Cydia apps without needing to use cydia - so if this problem comes up again - you might be able to solve it by deleting apps first.
Good luck.

I started out using the free app Substrate to generate the background artwork. The app doesn't DO anything, but it does it exquisitely. When Substrate had created a pattern that I found pleasing I performed a screen capture on the iPad. I opened the saved screen capture in PhotoPad, another free app, and used my RADtech stylus to rotate and annotate it.

iOS 5 Beta 6 is now available for over the air download.
As with all iOS Beta updates - there is an accompanying iTunes update.
Process for updating is the following.
1. Sync your iOS device with your computer.
2. Back up specifically your iOS device to your computer.
2.b If you have photos - make sure you download / sync those photos with iPhoto or your windows equivalent.
2.c Make sure your iOS device is fully charged or plug in a power source now.
3. Download the latest version of iTunes and install.
4. On your iOS device Go to Settings --> General --> Software Updates
and then check for the update and download.
5. Wait, and wait a little more, and then when it looks like it is almost done downloading - wait even more.
6. When you see the pop up book tap "install" unless you fell asleep in step 5 - in which case it will auto install after a minute or so.
7. Wait while it reboots - takes a few minutes.
8. Check to make sure you email, photos and other items are still there. They should be.
Unlike the last update - Apple is not recommending you delete all data - so this one is actually easier and faster than the last one when all is said and done.
I am playing with it now - and if I find or hear of any new features I will update this post. Of course if you come across any new features or bugs please put them in the comments below.

Hi Rob,
I've been one of those folks who have been reluctant to jailbreak my phone. Two things are scaring me away. First, your warning about the potential for problems. This is my only phone, and I use it for business, and would be hurting if it were out of commission for a few days. But I'm just about over that, and want to jailbreak, except for the second item.
I would want to have a good solid backup before I did jailbreak. But I have been unable to back my iPhone up lately. It will sit in iTunes for an hour, syncing, and just be 30% done. I just had to cancel the last 4 or 5 syncs. Any thoughts on what would cause it to take so long to backup?
I've also noticed that my orange Other is over 2 gig now. Is that out of line? I'm afraid to restore, now, too, because the last actual backup is so old. Worse though, is that iTunes seems to think that the last backup was just the last time that I had actually cancelled. So if I restore, would it draw from a corrupt backup?
Any advice would be very much appreciated!
Randy
Pittsburgh, PA
Hi Randy,
First up definitely do NOT restore or Jailbreak or upgrade EVER if you can not backup first.
I would suggest if you have lots and lots of photos in your camera roll - to sync them to a computer and then delete out all the photos in your camera roll on your iOS device. That sometimes will greatly speed up the back up.
Same if you have videos in the camera roll - essentially get it do nothing in the camera roll on your iOS device and you should see a great improvement in speed. I would also look at how many voice memos you have and again get them sync'd up on your computer and then turn off the sync'g.

Rob W

Hi Rob,
I am currently paying way too much for my landline. My wife and I both have iPhones (one 4 and one 3GS).
I am planning to ratchet down my landline costs to the bare bones, so I can still have it available for 911 (e.g. if the teenager is home) and also in the rare case when power is out (since the copper wire phone service has its own power source).
Wondering what you think about the "Ulimate Irony: Use an Old Jailbroken iPhone" section of the following Gizmodo article: http://gizmodo.com/#!5654683/how-to-replace-your-landline-with-google-voice
I am considering using an unlocked/jailbroken 3G iphone I have sitting on the bookshelf gathering dust.
And any other thoughts, recommendations, articles you may have on this topic.
Thanks!
Del
Hi Del
If you are looking at replacing your land line with the jailbroken iPhone per the Gizmodo Article - you need to realize two issues - 1. No 911 calls 2. No calls when the power or just the cable goes out - as that method does require you to have a VOiP connection.
So in your case where you are looking to have a phone around for your daughter for emergencies - this will not be a good choice.
However for those just looking to replace their land line with an old jailbroken iPhone - it is a good article. Here is the meet of the article on how to set up the jailbroken iPhone
Attribution to Gizmodo per the link above:
Here's how: • First, jailbreak your iPhone. • Download GV Mobile+ and Acrobits Softphone from the App Store. • Get a Sipgate account and your free phone number • Have Google Voice forwards calls to the Sipgate number • Add your Sipgate credentials to Acrobits Softphone. It's not hard: you're basically just plugging in your number and user name. • In GV Mobile+, head to the Settings tab and change the 'Phone to Ring' from "No Phone" to your Sipgate number.

Ever wonder why I distain Digitimes so much - well it is BS like they put out this week that has something to do with it.
First remember they were rumor mongering that the iPad3 would launch this fall. And by rumor mongering I mean Link baiting.
Now they just link baited the opposite and said that the iPad3 will not be out until 2012 because of supply chain issues related to a Retina Display. So now they have put out both that it will be released in the fall and it will not be released in the fall (want to guess which article they will point to when it comes out not in the fall).
And that is why I can't stand them - they were putting out BS when they originally said the iPad3 would be released this fall and now are throwing out more BS when they say the iPad 3 is being delayed until 2012.
The iPad3 was not scheduled for a fall release so there is no delay - Heck it is not even announced yet and any blogger with half a brain can see how well the iPad2 is doing vs. the comp and realize there is NO business reason to release a new iPad this year.
And sites like Digitimes and others that said otherwise based on "unnamed" sources are/were full of crap and likely just link baiting.

Hi Rob,
The other day I had plugged my phone into the computer to charge, I still have it set up to automatically start Itunes, I had left the room and my girlfriend went on the laptop to use iTunes and selected update to 4.3 on my phone, thus removing my jailbreak.
I have my host file updated for Jay's server but iTunes is still giving me an error.
The one time I got it restored on 4.1 it had no service I waited several hours and multiple reboots but still nothing.
I finally just gave up and re-updated to 4.3. Is there any way you know of to get me back to 4.1? I do have SHSH blobs for 4.1 and 4.2.1
Regards,
Derek
Hi Derek,
Apple is still for now signing iOS 4.1 for iOS devices not using the A4 processor - which means yes you can downgrade to iOS 4.1 if you don't have and iPad, iPhone 4 or iPod touch 5th gen.
Here is how one of the listeners was able to downgrade his iPhone 3GS.
Hi rob,
I would like to confirm apple is still signing iOS 4.1, I successfully downgraded from 4.3.5 on my 3GS,
I put in dfu mode,
did shift restore and installed 4.1,
once I got the 1015 error I kicked got the iPhone to boot by opening tiny umbrella and hitting exit,
phone then rebooted to emergency call screen.
I jailbroke using l1merain .
Hope this helps

Hello Rob,
I'm a recently retired Mac Sys Admin from Penn State, and now that I'm on a fixed income, I really can't justify spending almost $1,000.00 per year for a phone contract. So, I dropped my monthly AT&T plan, and converted to a Motorola RAZR with an AT&T goPhone plan ($2.00 per day, unlimited use, unlimited text). That serves me well since I rarely use the phone for voice or text and I'm almost always within reach of WiFi. But, when I go out and about, I very much hate carrying two phones around. I really want a way to use my iPhone as an AT&T goPhone.
So, I researched unlocking the iPhone, cutting down sim cards, etc. etc. But I never found a solution to using the iPhone as a goPhone that I was 100% comfortable with. But then, once Apple starting selling unlocked iPhones, I thought I should go to an AT&T store and request them to unlock my iPhone. I figured I'd grovel and beg and explain to them that I'd never ever pay a monthly contract, and wouldn't they like me to be a happier customer not weighed down by two phones? I knew there wasn't a snowball's chance in hell that AT&T would agree, but I figured I'd give it a go anyways.
In early June, I was visiting my sister in West Lafayette Indiana, and she happened to need something from her local AT&T store, so I tagged along, figuring this was a perfect chance to see if they would unlock my iPhone. I waited to speak with a service agent and I asked, "I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this question, but might you unlock my iPhone?" I explained my recent retirement, and how I couldn't justify spending close to a grand a year on an iPhone plan, and how I really, really, really wanted to use my iPhone as an AT&T goPhone. When I heard the guy let out a belly laugh, I knew I was pipe dreaming. He says, "No-o-o-o-o, I can't unlock your iPhone (more chuckling and laughing), but what I can do for you is to set up your iPhone up as an AT&T goPhone." I was in shock -- so much so, I gave serious consideration to firing up one of my iPhone survival apps! He asked the other clerk if that was now allowed, got confirmation that it was, and within minutes, my iPhone was configured as a goPhone! Smiling faces all around, especially mine! I've never been so happy to visit an AT&T store in my life.
I don't think I've heard or seen reports of this new AT&T policy. So, I thought you and your listeners would like to hear about it. If I missed the news, either in print, or on a show, my only out is that since I am recently retired, I must have been napping when word hit the street! Zzzz. Zzzz. Zzzz.
Again, thanks for providing such a superb podcast.
Cheers,
~~Kenster
Ken,Which iPhone did you have that they unlocked? How long had you had it? Did you get all the way through your initial 2 year contract with AT&T?RW
Hi Rob,
It's an iPhone 4. I got the phone in July of 2010. When I retired at the end of Feb 2011, I opted out of the contract and paid the early termination fee. I was 8 months into a 24 month commitment having purchased the iPhone 4 in July. I think the early termination fee was $255.00. I figured it was better to pay that rather than having to pay for an additional 16 months of service at $70.00 per month.
I've been an AT&T customer since about a year and a half prior to the release of the iPhone. But I was only 8 months into my most recent 2 year commitment, (having purchased the iPhone last July).
I should be clear, AT&T didn't unlock the phone, it's still tied to working only with AT&T as the carrier. But what they did do is set up the phone so it could be used as a goPhone -- which is AT&T's version of a prepaid wireless plan.
I opted for the $2.00 per day goPhone plan. That gives me unlimited voice and SMS for any day I choose to use the phone. But no data at all. If I'm out of range of WiFi, I can't do anything that requires data (like use the Map app, etc). It's probably not a great plan for everyone, but I like it. Especially when I think about having an extra $740.00 in my pocket at the end of a year. I'd rather use the money for a new iPad than gifting it to AT&T for cell service that I don't use all that often.
PS - I actually don't miss the Map app when I'm out and about. Instead I fire up G-Map which I purchased a while ago as a voice navigation app. It also has POIs so it's a descent replacement for google maps when I can't get WiFi. For hiking, I use Topo Maps, by Phillip Endicott. It's a great app that let's you pre-download USGS topographical maps. It's better than relying upon online maps especially in some of the wooded areas of Pennsylvania, where cell service can be somewhere between spotty and non-existent.
Cheerio,
~~Kenster

Hi Rob,
I have lost the contacts on my Iphone 4, and nothing seems to work to bring them back.
I even downloaded contact apps and put a few in, but they don't stay.
This started after the last update 4.whatever. I am running window 7, hope you can help.
Thanks,
Karen H
Hi Karen,
This is an issue others have reported on as well.
The fix that usually works is the following.
1. Go To Settings --> Mail, Contacts, Calendars --> (Scroll Down to) Import SIM Contacts
2. Then wait until it is finished and your contacts should be back.
This happens when backing up and sync'g the phone as the iPhone does not by default store your contacts unless you have selected it to do so.
To change it so it does sync going forward - with your iPhone connected to your computer. Open iTunes.
Then select your iPhone from Devices.
Then go to Info tab.
The top section is for Sync'g Address book contacts - Make sure that is selected.
Please let me know if this does not fix your problem.

First attempt at some podcast artwork. Took a screenshot of the TII app splash screen then used FX Photo Studio ($1.99) to crop it and run a couple if filters on it.

Hi Rob,
I had a non jailbroken 1st gen. iPad Running pages with no problem. Then I jailbroke The iPad and pages stop working. So I installed pages on my already jailbroken IPhone 4 and it dose not work it just keep crashing. Just wondering if anyone else have this problem with pages?
Regards,
Fred Y
Hi Fred,
Typically the jailbreak itself does not cause an issue with any Apps. It is a conflict with one of the jailbroken apps you installed after the Jailbreak that is likely causing the issue.
When jailbroken - it is always best to un-install any JB apps you are not going to use regularly. I know there is a tendency to just install apps and if you do not use them just to forget about them - however if you do that when you are jailbroken you WILL have issues.
My recommendation at this point is to go into Cydia and un-install every Cydia app you are not using consistently. Then check pages again. If there is still an issue - then start un-installing the rest one at a time until the issue goes away.
There is no quick fix solution when you have conflicts between apps - outside of removing the conflicting app.
Regards,
Rob W
UPDATE:
Thank's Rob I had problems with pages and you advised me to try removing jailbroken apps that I don't use. I did that and found the one that was conflicting it was HUNTSPELL a spellchecking app. Thank's again Fred

Hi Rob,
I own a non jailbroken iPod touch and don't plan on doing so, can I record my screen as a video file for YouTube videos in anyway using my pc or an app etc thanks for your time
Sean W
Hi Sean
I think what you are saying / asking - is that you have an iPod touch that is not jailbroken and you do not want to jailbreak it. And you are asking if there is any non-jailbroken apps to allow you to record what happens on the screen of you iPod touch on your computer?
If that is the question - then the answer is No.
If you jailbreak - then the answer is Yes. There is a program called ScreenRecorder - that lets you record right on the iPod - anything you are doing and then you transfer the video. There is a free version that just records 30 seconds you can try out.
There is also screen splittr - that lets you mirror what is going on on your iPhone on your computer. Then you need to use screen capture software on your computer to record it. There is a program called Demo god that works with it on the Mac - don't think there is anything for a PC.

Hi Rob,
I am looking for a way to use my iPhone as a remote for Keynote. It appears all the available remotes in the app store only work with a Mac. Any ideas out there?
Thanks.
Andrew E

Hi Andrew,
There is the actual Keynote App for the iPhone - which is the recommended one.
Note - Keynote itself only works on a Mac - so that is why all the apps just work with a mac. You can not run Keynote the program on a PC.
I would recommend the Apple Keynote Remote app.

Hi Rob,
I have a problem with my iPhone 4 that I loved. I had all iPhones since back on 2007 but now this is the first one that I have called in names. I jailbreaked all my iDevices and this wasn't the exception. This phone looses connection to the internet and sometimes I can't even make calls even when it shows I have signal, there is no connection. It freezes! when I press the power and try to slide to unlock it will not respond, can u imagine when I receive a call? If I'm on mail and I want to erase a message, if I try to swipe to delete. it doesn't even respond and it goes on an on.. so Yesterday I decided to update it. Ok, I loose all my hacks and features, but if this will solve this problems.. Fine! Done! Now I don't have any connection problems but everything else is the same.
- when I go to slide to unlock it freezes so I have to turn off and on to be able to unlock.
- if I'm on mail or phone app, when I want to select, sometimes it doesn't respond so I have to turn on and off.
-this my be unrelated but in Yahoo, it keeps telling me that it doesn't have internet connection, so I press CONTINUE, like Ten times until finally recognizes I have signal.
I have unlimited internet plan with AT&T, and yes I have updated to 4.3.5
Thanks
Jerry in Atlanta
Hi Jerry,
Have your tried a complete factory restore - NOT from a backup?
You may first want to do a reset on the network settings -
settings --> general --> reset --> Reset Network Settings
but since you are having issues with the slider - I doubt that will help there - and sadly it looks like you either have something corrupted and you need to do the full factory reset or you have a hardware issue and you need to take it to the apple store.
Let me know if the full factory reset works - but again - you might want to try the Reset network setting first just to see if it helps. (doubtful - but it is quick to try).
Regards,
Rob W
Hey Rob,
I'm a happy camper, my iPhone is working just fine, I did as you suggested, a Full factory reset and that did the job. Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my questions
Have a beautiful day and keep doing what you are doing.
God bless you,
Jerry

Rob,
Had some time on my hands to fiddle with the Brushes app on my iPad and got carried away.
After a while I realized I might as well embellish it with the Tii logo (slightly stylized). The text at the top of the image was created using Keynote for iPad and pasted into Brushes.
Cheers. David

Apple released iOS 5 beta 5 today. Note the OTA update may not be available for you yet. Keep trying.
As with past updates it is mostly bug fixes in this beta update. As I find out about any new features I will update this post.
As always you will want to upgrade to the latest version of iTunes (10.5 beta 5) first then do a back up of your iOS device - and then do the OTA update.
Update1: It appears to do the OTA update you need to do the following:
- To install iOS 5 beta 5 using over the air software update, you must first erase all content and settings on your device by choosing Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Over the air software update can be initiated on devices running iOS 5 beta 3 and later by choosing Settings > General > Software Update.
- Be sure to backup your devices using iTunes 10.5 beta 4 or through iCloud backup prior to installing iOS 5 beta 5. After installing iOS 5 beta 5, you can restore your device using either iTunes 10.5 beta 5 or through your iCloud backup.
I am working on the update now and will post more after I am done.
Update 2: I was able to update two devices - an iPad and 3GS with the OTA updates - but as per above you do need to do a full Erase of all content before it shows that an update is available over the air. Make sure you do a full back up with your iOS device connected via USB prior to doing the erase.
After you erase set up as a new device - do the update - then do a restore from back up after you have done the update. To do the restore from update - I did it while connected via USB and right clicking on the iOS device in iTunes and choosing the restore from back up option. If after the restore from update you see your Apps - but it shows them as waiting for download for each app - do a sync with the iOS device tethered via USB.
Good luck - this one was not as straight forward as past updates.
Now off to see if there is any new features.

Rob, I have a question for you or the audience. I have a class with no wifi that I use my MacBook Air for. I have Internet on my iPhone 4 (obviously). I'm looking for an app that will let me transfer a file (office doc, image, PDF, etc) to my MacBook using adhoc wifi (like AirDrop) or Bluetooth. Unfortunately, I can't jailbreak, so I'm looking for a "sanctioned" app. It's probably not possible, but I figured you'd be the one to ask.
Thanks, Lou V
Hi Lou,
But since you can not jailbreak - the only App I have heard of that is close is an app called iFlashDrive .
It is a $1.99 - but I recommend reading the full description for the app before you purchase it anyway. Good luck and let me know if this works for what you are trying to do.

Rob W

I had been having intermittent issues with Apple TV on and off for some time with streaming from Netflix. This was especially true when ever someone else was surfing on the wifi network that my Apple TV was on. My old router was a Netgear RangeMax model WPN824 v3. Lately when checking download speeds there was hardly a day it would be above 1 MBPS. It seems having 3 iPhones, an iPad, a Roku, 3 computers, an Apple TV and an HP Wireless Printer all pinging it was too much.
I looked around and read a bunch of reviews and found that for under $100 a good Wireless router looked to be the Cisco / Linksys E2500 "Advanced Dual-Band N Router" And after getting it set up - WOW. Netflix never started videos so quickly and streamed so well. On my laptop which when I did Speed tests before switching I went from an average download speed of 0.6 mbps with the Netgear router up to 15 mbps with the e2500. This is with the same number of Wifi devices "connected". (Plugging my modem directly into my computer resulted in an average of 19 mbps on the downloads.)
One of the nice things on the E2500 is that it is dual band - so surfing the web while watching Netflix on Apple TV did not effect either - even when streaming from Youtube.
Additionally I noticed a nice speed bump in surfing on my iOS devices. As would be expected per the numbers above.
If you are having starting and stopping issues on your Apple TV with Netflix and updating to the lastest software on Apple TV did not fix your issue - it may be time for a new Router. The e2500 was $79 at Best Buy - I recommend calling before heading out, the store I went to only had one in stock. You can also find it on line for about $70.
Now for the Warning - if you have a Mac and you have updated to Lion - You will need to wait to upgrade. Setting up the e2500 requires a Max running OS X 10.5.x or 10.6.x - but I could not get it set up on my OS X 10.7 (Lion) Mac book Pro. I had to use my old mac book running Snow Leopard. I checked the site for Cisco/ Linksys and the setup software was last updated mid July - right before the release of Lion.
After the initial issues with getting it set up - I am now very happy with the performance of the router - not just for Apple TV and my iOS devices but for my Computer as well.

Hi Rob
Can you explain to me how to get my texted pictures off my iPhone and on to my computer or any other device?
Thanks Rob I love your show
Fred
Hello Fred,
One of the easiest ways is to simply tap and hold the thumbnail of the image and select Copy - and then past it into an email and email it to your computer.
You can also tap once on the image and then when it opens up in the lower left you can tap on the box with the arrow out and then save the image - whch will then put the image in the camera roll - which then can be sync'd up with your photo app on your computer.

Apple TV (2nd Gen) iOS 4.3 update is available.
There are two big changes or at least two noteable changes.
There is now access to Vimeo a competing video sharing service to Youtube. So if you are fed up with Fred and the Annoying Orange but still want user generated content - there is now Vimeo on the Apple TV.
The 2nd change is Apple TV now supports purchasing TV shows through iTunes on the device. Previously it only supported renting TV shows.
If you find anyother hidden updates - let me know. Also let me know if you find any issues or improvements to streaming via Netflix.

Rob W
