    TRANSCRIPT FOR EPISODE 383

Welcome to the show I am your host Rob and this is the Today in iOS podcast -  First up I want to thank JIMMY for sending in the music you hear in the background. JIMMY wrote:

    Hi Rob!

Here is a song called Somewhere Near Her. This is a fairly sparse piece, only two guitar tracks played on my 2004 Gibson '57 Gold Top Reissue Les Paul into an Apogee Jam and directly into GarageBand on my iPad. What I find really cool about this recording is how sweet sounding the guitar amp models are in GarageBand. Just a little tweaking will render some great, very usable tones.

Anyway, hope you and the listeners enjoy.

    Best Regards

To start this episode - we are going to get into a subject / topic / item that seems to be very polarizing - I have come across strong and sometimes very flawed arguments from both sides but I will do my best to present info and opinions from both camps and of course some of your thoughts as well.  This also has caused this episode to be delayed as there were multiple dozens of articles I have read on this.

This is of course about the Apple v FBI story that has been all over the news.  If you are not familiar with this story - which I guess is possible - It is either the FBI forcing Apple to create a back door that will eventually destroy our privacy and civil liberties and be used by Evil regimes to subjugate the masses or it is  The FBI asking for a harmless one time - one use tool to get into an iPhone used by a terrorist that killed 14 Americans.

This whole issue came to a head early last week when a Judge ruled that Apple must Create a tool to allow the unlocking of an iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino shooters - an iPhone running iOS 9.

That ruling was then followed by a Letter from Tim Cook and Apple about why they can’t and will not do what they were asked to do.

Lets start this with reading the full letter from Apple - as I am guessing many have not read it yet.

This was published by Apple on February 16, 2016

And it is titled A Message to Our Customers

    Quote

The United States government has demanded that Apple take an unprecedented step which threatens the security of our customers. We oppose this order, which has implications far beyond the legal case at hand.

This moment calls for public discussion, and we want our customers and people around the country to understand what is at stake.

Smartphones, led by iPhone, have become an essential part of our lives. People use them to store an incredible amount of personal information, from our private conversations to our photos, our music, our notes, our calendars and contacts, our financial information and health data, even where we have been and where we are going.

All that information needs to be protected from hackers and criminals who want to access it, steal it, and use it without our knowledge or permission. Customers expect Apple and other technology companies to do everything in our power to protect their personal information, and at Apple we are deeply committed to safeguarding their data.

Compromising the security of our personal information can ultimately put our personal safety at risk. That is why encryption has become so important to all of us.

For many years, we have used encryption to protect our customers’ personal data because we believe it’s the only way to keep their information safe. We have even put that data out of our own reach, because we believe the contents of your iPhone are none of our business.

We were shocked and outraged by the deadly act of terrorism in San Bernardino last December. We mourn the loss of life and want justice for all those whose lives were affected. The FBI asked us for help in the days following the attack, and we have worked hard to support the government’s efforts to solve this horrible crime. We have no sympathy for terrorists.

When the FBI has requested data that’s in our possession, we have provided it. Apple complies with valid subpoenas and search warrants, as we have in the San Bernardino case. We have also made Apple engineers available to advise the FBI, and we’ve offered our best ideas on a number of investigative options at their disposal.

We have great respect for the professionals at the FBI, and we believe their intentions are good. Up to this point, we have done everything that is both within our power and within the law to help them. But now the U.S. government has asked us for something we simply do not have, and something we consider too dangerous to create. They have asked us to build a backdoor to the iPhone.

Specifically, the FBI wants us to make a new version of the iPhone operating system, circumventing several important security features, and install it on an iPhone recovered during the investigation. In the wrong hands, this software — which does not exist today — would have the potential to unlock any iPhone in someone’s physical possession.

The FBI may use different words to describe this tool, but make no mistake: Building a version of iOS that bypasses security in this way would undeniably create a backdoor. And while the government may argue that its use would be limited to this case, there is no way to guarantee such control.

Some would argue that building a backdoor for just one iPhone is a simple, clean-cut solution. But it ignores both the basics of digital security and the significance of what the government is demanding in this case.

In today’s digital world, the “key” to an encrypted system is a piece of information that unlocks the data, and it is only as secure as the protections around it. Once the information is known, or a way to bypass the code is revealed, the encryption can be defeated by anyone with that knowledge.

The government suggests this tool could only be used once, on one phone. But that’s simply not true. Once created, the technique could be used over and over again, on any number of devices. In the physical world, it would be the equivalent of a master key, capable of opening hundreds of millions of locks — from restaurants and banks to stores and homes. No reasonable person would find that acceptable.

The government is asking Apple to hack our own users and undermine decades of security advancements that protect our customers — including tens of millions of American citizens — from sophisticated hackers and cybercriminals. The same engineers who built strong encryption into the iPhone to protect our users would, ironically, be ordered to weaken those protections and make our users less safe.

We can find no precedent for an American company being forced to expose its customers to a greater risk of attack. For years, cryptologists and national security experts have been warning against weakening encryption. Doing so would hurt only the well-meaning and law-abiding citizens who rely on companies like Apple to protect their data.

Criminals and bad actors will still encrypt, using tools that are readily available to them.

Rather than asking for legislative action through Congress, the FBI is proposing an unprecedented use of the All Writs Act of 1789 to justify an expansion of its authority.

The government would have us remove security features and add new capabilities to the operating system, allowing a passcode to be input electronically. This would make it easier to unlock an iPhone by “brute force,” trying thousands or millions of combinations with the speed of a modern computer.

The implications of the government’s demands are chilling. If the government can use the All Writs Act to make it easier to unlock your iPhone, it would have the power to reach into anyone’s device to capture their data.

The government could extend this breach of privacy and demand that Apple build surveillance software to intercept your messages, access your health records or financial data, track your location, or even access your phone’s microphone or camera without your knowledge.

Opposing this order is not something we take lightly. We feel we must speak up in the face of what we see as an overreach by the U.S. government.

We are challenging the FBI’s demands with the deepest respect for American democracy and a love of our country. We believe it would be in the best interest of everyone to step back and consider the implications.

While we believe the FBI’s intentions are good, it would be wrong for the government to force us to build a backdoor into our products. And ultimately, we fear that this demand would undermine the very freedoms and liberty our government is meant to protect.

Here is some feedback from those in the tii community about that letter.

    From  Tosin O

Quote For the benefit of those who feel Apple is going too far in their refusal of the court/FBI's demands (I wouldn't have thought any on this forum would argue in the FBI's favour given our understanding of how Apple works and their commitment to privacy), check out apple's open customer letter. I think this is the reason why we pay £700-800 buying these devices rather than settling for cheaper alternatives with doubtful scruples. My take on the issue.

    unquote

    From Holltel

quote Very strongly but well written letter. I sympathize with everyone involved but whole hardly agree with Apples stance on this. unquote

    From Myron U

quote Here's my take on this. Theoretically Apple could build a backdoor into iOS that allows them through a special process to gain access to the underlying data or even remove the passcode from the device. They could make that process extremely secure so that it is highly unlikely that it could be done through any means other than their own equipment. I can even imagine ways they could design a multi-step process that would be very difficult to break.

However, we already know that the jailbreak community is cunning enough to figure out backdoors into iOS that allows a jailbreak to happen. Any team smart enough to do that could figure out how Apple's backdoor works and repeat their exploit.

No matter how good it is, encryption can be broken and any process that lets you into a device, no matter how challenging and protected you make it, will allow a hacker to repeat it.

Personally I'm very happy Apple is going to great lengths to protect my device from hackers. I'm even more impressed that they are willing to fight it all the way to the Supreme Court if necessary. Of course, this is also great for marketing because Apple can tell the world how they are willing to fight for our security.

    unquote

    From Karthik M

quote They're taking this too far. I believe Apple should cooperate with FBI. National Security first. Who cares about the privacy of those terrorists. unquote

    From Dave T

quote If any phone company makes phones with backdoor access to each owner's personal information people will just not buy those phones. It's as simple to understand as that.

I agree with Myron  I don't have anything to hide - except my liberty. Taking away my liberty is not the purpose of the state. It should be to protect my liberty. So, asking a manufacturer to "hack" their users is anti-democratic. It forces the makers into the position of collaborating with whoever wants to use this information. Right now it's all about "those people" and "the bad guys" but we all know when there is no more civil liberty then the state gets to decide who is good and who is bad.

Once you build a back door you can't go back. It is important to defend the rights of individuals to choose the way they want to live their lives in a free society. I hope all makers of phones will step up and declare the protection of individual rights in the face of pressure to erode those protections. The road to hell, it is often said, is paved with good intentions.

If America wants to force all their phone makers out of business all they have to do is force them to make them less secure and people will flee those products. It's not just that Apple thinks it can win, but its that Apple is hoping this makes sense to all the tech companies out there who are handling people's personal data.

There's some data which is "public" and your behaviour in public is restricted by various regulations and legal precedents. But on your own property you have rights, in your home you have other rights, and with respect to information you choose to protect with encryption you should also have the same rights. Europe and Asia may have other legacy issues with their own governments and traditions. Each will have to struggle to ensure those governments don't abuse their privilege to oppress their populations. In the US (and some other places) the protection of the individual (and their respective rights) is enshrined in a constitutional document which the police, the state, and the courts are sworn to uphold. These constitutions are there to protect people from their government gone mad.

Perhaps we have reached this moment.

    Hi Rob,

A highly polarizing topic. I'm interested to hear/read what your international audience has to say about it.

    Cheers!

Also coming in on Apples side in this battle are the CEO’s of Google and What’sApp.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai via Twitter warned that compliance with the court order could compromise a users privacy - and look folks when Google talks about compromising a users privacy - well they are kinda experts in that field.

Here is what Sundar Said quote

We know that law enforcement and intelligence agencies face significant challenges in protecting the public against crime and terrorism. We build secure products to keep your information safe and we give law enforcement access to data based on valid legal orders," he said.

"But that's wholly different than requiring companies to enable hacking of customer devices and data. Could be a troubling precedent.”

    unquote

What’s App CEO Jan Koum said the following quote

I have always admired Tim Cook for his stance on privacy and Apple's efforts to protect user data and couldn't agree more with everything said in their Customer Letter today, We must not allow this dangerous precedent to be set. Today our freedom and our liberty is at stake.”

    unquote

Some not on Apples side - Pretty much all of the republican Candidates for President And Old Hillary Clinton - but new Hillary Clinton on Thursday said she would not pick a side - which was also the same stance as Bernie Sanders.

    19:43

    http://www.nytimes.com/2016/

    02/19/technology/a-yearlong-road-to-

    a-standoff-with-the-fbi.html

Lets do a little history lesson.

Apple has since the iPhone was released been helping law enforcement officials get data off of iPhones when asked by the justice department.  With iOS 7 and earlier - the level of encryption or lack there of - made is such that Apple could easily and quickly reply to these requests.

Apple even claims in the first half of 2015 - Apple provided data for more than 3,000 law enforcement requests.

But again these are for devices running the iOS 7 or older versions.

Then in mid 2015 - Apple changed their stance and said no to a request to get data off an iPhone 5S running iOS 7 that belonged to a drug dealer per a case in Brooklyn NY.  Apple said quote We’re being forced to become an agent of law enforcement, Customer data is under siege from a variety of different directions,”  “Never has the privacy and security of customer data been as important as it is now

    unquote

And really with iOS 8 and later - Apple looked at this issue of getting data almost moot as well - as if the phone is set up correctly - Apple can not get to the data and they stated that point to Law Enforcement agencies.

New York authorities alone claimed they have been locked out of 175 iPhones in cases they are pursuing.

But back to Apple saying no to the case of the drug dealer in NY - not alleged either because he has already pleaded guilty.  It Seems the stance Apple took made it such that it was just a matter of time before  the government was going to pick a juicy case to go after Apple with - And nothing is more juicy and PR cringing then one involving ISIS  terrorists and Dead Americans.

Note Prior to the December shooting - Tim Cook - described Data Privacy as a human Rights issue and that if Apple designed a way to defeat encryption for the US Government that tool would be exploited by hackers and other foreign governments like China.

The Justice department under Eric Holder was actually sympathetic to that point of view - even when pressed by an aggressive stance by FBI director Comey and of course the NSA and Criminal Prosecuters through out the US argued for a court order or act of congress forcing Apple to crack their encryption and provide a back door.   When Attorney General Loretta Lynch took over from Eric Holder - the justice department switched their sympathies to those with the FBI - and then well the shooting happened in December.

And we should point out - Apple still gives advice and consults on how to get data off iPhones and has done so even in this case with the San Bernardino shooters.

    22:38

    http://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-

    fbi-apple-20160220-story.html

The FBI has decided to also make this whole thing a battle of he said - she said.  On Friday - The Government urged a federal jude to immediately compel Apple to comply to the court order to build a tool to crack their encryption.  Which we should point out - Apple has never even said such a tool is possible.

The Government argued that Apple Appears more concerned with marketing strategy then nation security.  In a move which appears to be aimed as much at public opinion as the judge the filing submitted to the Government argued Apples refusal to comply per the letter I read earlier from Tim cook quote appears to be based on its concern for its business model and public brand marketing strategy, not a legal rationale unquote

The Filing states - that Apple Tech told investigators they could write software the FBI wants to unlock Farooks Phone.  And that Apple Conceded that it had the technical ability to help but that their public statements have been misleading.

In a conference call with Reporters Senior Apple Execs speaking on a condition that they not be identified or quoted - said the Government’s motion was designed to get media attention and described the FBI’s request as overreaching by the government. I do though have to ask - why would Apple have a Conference call with reporters if they did not want to be quoted.  How did that call go - Ok thanks to all of you that tell the world everything - we are going to tell you a bunch of stuff - just don’t do your job and tell anyone.  HMMMMM.

That said - Ryan Calo an law professor at the University of Washington and an expert on Privacy law said the following

quote "In the court of public opinion, a dead terrorist whose phone might have connections to more terrorists is pretty attractive from the standpoint of prosecution, but the legal question is not made easier because of that, No court has ruled on whether a tech company could be forced to find a way around its own security features. What is being asked to be done here on the scale of things is pretty invasive, They are asking for a lot, not a little. unquote.

    http://money.cnn.com/2016/02/20/

    technology/apple-fbi-san-bernardino-

    shooting/index.html

Apple of course says if you are going to make this a he said - she said  battle with the public - fine - then lets talk about how you guys botched this case already by changing the icloud password.  Doohhh.

See the iPhone in this case is not a personal phone of the shooter - but a county owned phone.

Apple Execs claim there was a lost opportunity to get into the shooters iCloud account.  They said the iCloud password was changed hours after the shooting preventing a potential iCloud backup that may have revealed further info.

And it has been confirmed that Yes San Bernardino county had reset the iCloud password at the FBI’s request and prior to the FBI’s consultation with Apple. Double Doooohhhh.

The phone had been doing weekly backups to iCloud with the last backup to iCloud done 6 weeks prior to the shooting and there is no way to know if the shooter turned off auto-backups or if his account had hit the limit.

Apple says the data that the FBI is trying to get may have been retrievable by them on their own had they not had the County change the password.

This changing of the password may be important in this case as the implications are it may have damaged the governments case against apple to build a tool.  Well at least that is how Apple clearly will play this.

And again most reports in most articles are that their may not be any solid legal ground for the government to stand on per forcing Apple to crack its product.

    26:43

    http://www.buzzfeed.com/johnpaczkowski/

    apple-terrorists-appleid-passcode-

    changed-in-government-cust

The FBI downplayed the effect of the action, however, stating, that the reset “[does] not impact Apple’s ability to assist with the the court order under the All Writs Act,” and adding that “the government’s objective was, and still is, to extract as much evidence as possible from the phone.”

As an FYI - In October 2015 - a federal Judge in NY said the government was overstepping its boundaries by using a centuries old law - the All Writs Act as the basis for its requests that Apple Open the iPhone for the Drug dealer case mentioned previously.

And from an story on Buzz feed quote

Asked why Apple is pushing back so hard against this particular FBI request when it has assisted the agency in the past, Apple executives noted that the San Bernadino case is fundamentally different from others in which it was involved. Apple has never before been asked to build an entirely new version of its iOS operating system designed to disable iPhone security measures.

The Apple senior executives also pushed back on the government’s arguments that Apple’s actions were a marketing ploy, saying they were instead based on their love for the country and desire not to see civil liberties tossed aside.

    unquote

We should again point out Apple did work with the FBI on the iPhone used by the Shooter in San Bernadino - and sent their experts to help on this and gather as much data as possible.  But when the FBI wanted unspecified info on the phone that had not been backed up - a judge earlier this week granted an order requiring Apple to create a special tool i.e. back door to help investigators more easily crack the phone’s passcode.

Ironically it appears Apple had Asked the FBI to issue its application for said tool under seal - but the government made it public and that prompted the letter from cook I read earlier.

I say Ironically they asked for it under seal - because of all the candidates to talk about this - Governor Kasich from Ohio said this is something that should have been handled secretly.

One of the articles I read - that really drove home some good points was one in the NY times titled - In the Government vs Apple - who wears the black Hat.

I  want to read the beginning of the article.

    quote

Shouldn’t the government have more legal and moral authority to weigh complicated issues of privacy and national security than a company that makes phones?

It should. After all, nobody ever elected Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, to public office. The legal case seems clear enough: The Federal Bureau of Investigation has a warrant, Mr. Farook is dead, and his iPhone, which he used for work, is the property of San Bernardino County, which consented to having it searched. The data on the phone could yield valuable intelligence, making its content a legitimate matter of national security.

Apple had obeyed a demand to provide the government with the information in Mr. Farook’s iCloud account. But then it was asked to undermine the phone’s security system so the F.B.I. could try as many passcodes as possible to open the phone without erasing the stored data. Apple refused.

Peter Bergen a CNN National Security analyst presents this possible Point of View on Apple V FBI - which is that Apple is only digging in their heels now - because of fear of loosing customers - who could perceive them as in bed with the FBI / NSA and other governments around the world.  We are talking 10’s of Billions of sales revenue that could be lost along with obviously loosing market share to non-American tech companies - ones that would not be at the bidding of the FBI and NSA.

It should also be pointed out that ISIS’s key social media encrypted platform is Telegram - which is created by a German based tech company and not at all under US regulations.

I almost feel like a  Darby Shaw even mentioning this - but since it seems very likely Apples refusal to comply with the current court order will eventually make it to the Supreme court - and it just feels rather strange the timing of this and the passing of Supreme court Justice Scalia who most likely would have sided with the FBI - and been that 5th vote against Apple.

After coming up with that thought I went and checked to see if anyone else had a similar thought and I found an article from Information Technology reporter and expert - Robert X Cringely at cringely.com titled - The FBI v Apple isn’t all the way you think it is.

In his article - he talks about a few key points.  First Why does the Government need Apple to create this tool? - John McAfee has publicly stated he could do this in less than a month.  And yes McAfee is a whack job personally - but as Cringely states technically McAfee is one of the smartest people in the world and if he says he can do it - it should make you take pause about this whole issue.

Cringely also goes on to mention the very recent appointment of Columbia University computer scientist Steve Bellovin to the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board - a Government outfit that oversees the activities at Federal agencies including the NSA, CIA and of course the FBI.  Professor Bellovin is co-author of the report - Keys under doomats - Mandating insecurity by requiring government access to all data and communications - which is a report published by MIT that takes the stance that the FBI is wrong in its position against Apple  in terms of proper Policy.  Bellovin was obviously appointed by the current White House administration.

What Robert Cringely actually is proposing is basically a Reverse Pelican Brief scenario.  By the way 5 bonus points if you caught the Darby Shaw mention a minute or so ago being a Pelican Brief reference.  What Cringely presented was the following:

    quote

What the heck is going on here?

What’s going on is Justice Scalia is dead.

Had Justice Scalia not died unexpectedly a few days ago (notably before the Apple/FBI dustup) and had the FBI pursued the case with it landing finally in the Supreme Court, well the FBI would have probably won the case 5-4. Maybe not, but probably.

With Justice Scalia dead and any possible replacement locked in a Republican-induced coma, the now eight-member Supreme Court has nominally four liberal and four conservative justices but at least 1.5 of those conservatives (Justice Kennedy and sometimes Chief Justice Roberts) have been known to turn moderate on certain decisions. This smaller court, which will apparently judge all cases for the next couple years, is likely to be more moderate than the Scalia Court ever was.

So if you are a President who is a lawyer and former teacher of constitutional law and you’ve come over time to see that this idea of secret backdoors into encrypted devices is not really a good idea, but one that’s going to come up again and again pushed by nearly everyone from the other political party (and even a few from your own) wouldn’t right now be the best of all possible times to kinda-sorta fight this fight all the way to the Supreme Court and lose?

    unquote

Again a reverse Pelican Brief scenario and one that kinda makes sense.

    Hi Rob,

You may have already seen this, but below is a link to a blog post written by a guy who has worked with police on mobile phone issues in the past that outlines all of the things the FBI's order would entail. It's a heck of a lot more than just unlocking one phone and moving on.

And the point he makes about how the government would have to let this "tool" be made available to lawyers for the defense (and thereby guarantee it gets outside of the walls of government) is a great one.

    Hope all is well.

    Regards,

    Ryan

Thanks Ryan for the link to the post titled - Apple, FBI and the burden of Forensic Methodology - and it is written by Jonathan Zdziaski who is quote considered, worldwide, to be among the foremost experts in iOS related digital forensics and security. unquote

In his article he talks about what the FBI did, could have done and the implications.

Quote The FBI could have come to Apple with a court order stating they must brute force the PIN on the phone and deliver the contents. It would have been difficult to get a judge to sign off on that, since this quite boldly exceeds the notion of “reasonable assistance” to hack into your own devices. No, to slide this by, FBI was more clever. They requested that Apple developed a forensics tool but did not do the actual brute force themselves.  This was apparently enough for the courts to look past the idea of “reasonable assistance”, however there are some unseen caveats that are especially dangerous here.

What many  haven’t considered is the significant difference – in the legal world – between providing lab services and developing what the courts will consider an instrument.

An instrument is the term used in the courts to describe anything from a breathalyzer device to a forensics tool, and in order to get judicial notice of a new instrument, it must be established that it is validated, peer reviewed, and accepted in the scientific community..  Not only is Apple being ordered to compromise their own devices; they’re being ordered to give that golden key to the government, in a very roundabout sneaky way. What FBI has requested will inevitably force Apple’s methods out into the open, where they can be ingested by government agencies looking to do the same thing. They will also be exposed to private forensics companies, who are notorious for reverse engineering and stealing other people’s intellectual property. Should Apple comply in providing a tool, it will inevitably end up abused and in the wrong hands.

Some everyday average Individuals are also speaking up and asking the White House to put a kibosh on the FBI’s push to get Apple to create a backdoor.  There is now a petition posted on the white houses we the people site.  This was posted on Feb 17th  -  By Saturday Morning there was over 8,000 signatures   - By Sunday Morning there were over 11,000 signatures - with a goal of 100,000 signatures by March 18th.  In other words - a goal that should be reached and likely has been reached by the time episode 384 comes out.

    From the petition quote

The FBI, is demanding that Apple build a "backdoor" to bypass digital locks protecting consumer information on Apple's popular iPhones.

We the undersigned, oppose this order, which has implications far beyond the legal case at hand.

Congressman Ted Lieu of California’s 33rd congressional district - who also happens to be one of just a very small group of Congressional lawmakers with a background in Computer science said the following:

    Quote

Forcing Apple to weaken its encryption system in this one case means the government can force Apple—or any other private sector company—to weaken encryption systems in all future cases. This precedent-setting action will both weaken the privacy of Americans and hurt American businesses. And how can the FBI ensure the software that it is forcing Apple to create won't fall into the wrong hands? Given the number of cyberbreaches in the federal government—including at the Department of Justice—the FBI cannot guarantee this back door software will not end up in the hands of hackers or other criminals.

Here are my closing thoughts on this.  Lets say the FBI prevails and Apple is forced to create a backdoor into iOS - and the FBI gets in and finds some info and uses it to kill a few different ISIS operatives - it is not really going to make much if any impact on the fight against ISIS overall.  And Would not in this situation it actually be an overall victory for the terrorists.  After all their whole goal with any of their attacks is not to just kill people but to also kill and wound our freedoms and liberties. Terrorist are not looking to kill for sport - they are looking to kill ways of life by definition.  And creating a tool that allows the Government and rogue hackers access to all of our data - that is a Major attack on our liberties and way of life.  Make no mistake about it - this is a key goal of the terrorists and it seems the FBI is playing right into their hands.

And lets not think this tool will be handed over to the quote FBI unquote - it will be handed over to a Greg Varachek or a Joe Scardina or an Eddie Martin in the FBI - the FBI is not a robot it is a collection of people.  And then after the people in the FBI get a hold of this tool some in the NSA will want it and then some people in the Russian Government will want it and definitely those in the Chinese government will want it - actually there will be people in every government lining up for this tool.

We are not talking 100’s of people - we are talking 1000’s of individuals.  And not all of them are Ned Stark loyal to the end - but rather just regular humans - most good - some not so much And eventually a Greg or Joe or Eddy or someone else will pass this tool on to a person more like Little Finger - and then all our security and privacy will be at risk.

The Government wants to frame this argument as a single case - single event - but if that is true - why did they go public on this - why not do what Governor Kasiec and Apple suggested and keep it private.   Apple wants to frame this argument as being forced to break the security of all their devices and to create a master key that will eventually get in the hands of rogue nations, hackers  and oppressive regimes.  If Apple is correct it will not just be bad for their business it would be bad for everyone.

    Hi Rob,

Just wanted to let you know that I ordered razors from Harry's for my husband and son last week as l heard about it so many times on your show.  I tried to use Promo code tii but it didn't work, but I still ordered them anyway as Valentine's Day was coming up, and $5 wasn't that big of a deal.  But I decided to email Harry's customer service because I wanted your show to get credit.  They replied the next day, promised that Tii would get credit, and gave me a refund of $5.

The Truman sets in nice gift boxes arrived 2 days earlier than their estimate.  Both my husband and my son love their new razors!  I was surprised how smooth my husband's face was after shaving with Harry's razor.  I would definitely order their products again.

Thanks for the great idea for Valentine's Day gift, and I really hope Harry's would sponsor Tii again soon.

    Sincerely,

    Emiko F.

Hi Emiko - thanks for the feedback and comments about Harry’s and per you hope - well it is fulfilled - Harry’s is back this episode sponsoring Tii.

and folks if you go to harrys dot com - that is h a r r y s dot com and use the promo code t i i - you will save $5 on your first order.

I could talk about the convience of ordering online and no longer needing to ask someone to unlock a display case or the great price - or how great the after shave lotion feels and smells.

But rather I want to talk about the most important thing - the Blades.

The blades are incredible - there are 5 of them - not 3 or 4 - but 5.  No cuts no burn - and the best shave I have ever had at any price.  That said the prices are really low.

Harry’s great shave at a great price was not about luck either. Harry's went and found a German blade factory that was almost 100 years old and purchased it.  Harry’s owns the most important part of the razor - the blade and by cutting out the middle men on both sides means they can keep the price low to you.

Once again go to Harrys.com now and save $5 off when you enter the code - t i i with your first purchase.  That is h a r r y s dot com and enter the coupon code T I I at check out to save $5 on your first purchase and start shaving better in 2016

    Hi Rob

    In show 382 there was a request for an app to help consolidate duplicate contacts. I have used two apps that seemed to work well for me;

    1) Sync.me will locate dups and merge contact data in your contact list on the phone and social media. This may be a bit of overkill for that you are looking to accomplish.

    2) DeleteQ is a great app for just locating dups and merging or deleting them. I also use it for creating groups and bulk deletes of older contacts.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Rob,

I'm writing in response to the question about deleting multiple contacts.  I wrote previously about transferring contacts using google contacts (and syncing them between devices).  I too had multiple contacts before I got my contact syncing working cleanly.

For me it came down to multiple sources for contact information that the iPhone was merging together between iCloud, iTunes, and contacts directly created on the phone.  It was a real mess.

    Here was my process:

    1) Disable all contact syncing in Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars

    2) Setup a new sync to an empty account at your favorite webmail service. I used gmail because they have some good contact merging tools.  This will upload all of your contacts to that service.

    3) Disable all contact syncing as before.

    4) Sync the contacts to another new service.  I used yahoo webmail for this one.

    5) Once it is synced, delete them all from the webmail service and then re-sync.  The iPhone should now be empty of contacts.

    5) Use the contact merging feature in google contacts to consolidate your contacts.  There are some nice features for choosing which fields to keep across multiple contacts as your do the merge.

    6) Turn off all contacts syncing again, and then only enable the syncing to your cleaned up contacts account.  You should have clean contacts on your phone now with no duplicates.

I have found that only syncing to one contact management system at a time is the key to keeping my contacts clean and to making clean transfers of contacts between services.

I think the one thing needs to be asked is what info / data do you always need without fail - because sometimes the cloud is well more like a haze then a cloud.  And when you don’t have access to the cloud - is there some info you really could not live without for any period of time.

If not - then the cloud would be fine for you.

But for some - the thought of not having full access to all files / data all the time is unfathomable - Personally I am one of those that can’t do to live with out access to a lot of data and presentations and files - and I bet if I really really tried - I could get them all up on the cloud and then even get some local copies of the files I really really need access to - So maybe the question is not if you can live completely on the cloud - but are you prepared to sit down and upload all the files you have to the cloud and then do the work to figure out those few files you actually need access to 24/7/365  When I try to look at my situation objectively - I feel like I just don’t have the free time to really do what is needed to work in the cloud.

    apologizes-and-updates-ios-to-restore-

    iphones-disabled-by-error-53/

Thanks to Dr John and many others for the heads up on this one.

Remember that Error 53 issue we talked about on the last episode.

Well in midst of all the noise around the Apple v FBI issue - Apple made an update to iOS 9.2.1 that fixes those phones bricked by Error 53 - and Apple apologized for that issue.

From Apple per a statement made to tech crunch - quote

Some customers’ devices are showing ‘Connect to iTunes’ after attempting an iOS update or a restore from iTunes on a Mac or PC. This reports as an Error 53 in iTunes and appears when a device fails a security test. This test was designed to check whether Touch ID works properly before the device leaves the factory.

Today, Apple released a software update that allows customers who have encountered this error message to successfully restore their device using iTunes on a Mac or PC.

We apologize for any inconvenience, this was designed to be a factory test and was not intended to affect customers. Customers who paid for an out-of-warranty replacement of their device based on this issue should contact AppleCare about a reimbursement.

    unquote

Please note - this update will NOT - repeat NOT re-enable Touch ID for units where 3rd party touch ID sensors were installed.  NOR should it.  As the whole reason Apple had the check in place is to make sure nothing in the security chain if broken and when a 3rd party sensor is installed - Apple can not verify it is secure.

They way it works now - where it simply shuts down touch ID for any 3rd party sensors is HOW it SHOULD have always worked - and was meant to work - according to Apple.

In a nut shell - if Touch ID is important to you - make sure Apple replaces your home button Touch ID sensor.  If cost is a bigger issue - you can still get a 3rd party repair - you just will not be able to use Touch ID.

It is good to see Apple make a change so quickly on this.

FYI - it also appears that only those that had done updates via iTunes on their computer saw the Error 53 issue originally - and if you had done an over the air update - you would not have had your phone bricked.

Here is Apples recommended steps for users to update or restore their iPhones.

    • 1. Download and install the latest version of iTunes on your computer.
    • 2. Force restart your device
    • 3. Try to restore your device again

Apple advises users to contact Apple Support, if they still are encountering error 53 when trying to restore their iPhones.

    level-phone-encryption-bills

Prior to this whole Blow up of Apple v. FBI over encryption and back doors - there was an announcement that a new Bill was being introduced in congress by Rep Ted Lieu Democrat - California and Rep Blake Farenthold - Republican Texas - that is called the Encrypt act of 2016.  The sponsors of the bill said they are quote deeply concerned unquote that various bills surrounding encryption would be put in place by different states around disabling encryption or not allowing devices to be sold in those states with encryption.

Essentially this bill would kill all those stupid anti encryption - pro back door bills put forth in different states by clueless and incompetent state legislators in NY and California -  just sayin.

The future of the Encrypt act of 2016 I would guess is pretty fuzzy at this point given the whole Apple v. FBI debacle.

I would like to say expect to hear more about this bill in the future - but in the current environment if the winds in DC are not blowing quite right - it is likely to wither and die on the vine.

    PLAY - I’M JUST A BILL.

    your-iphone-s-date-back-to-1970

    Rob,

I hadn't heard about this one, but apparently you can brick your phone by manually setting the date to Unix Day Zero (Jan 1, 1970).  There are some evil people out there trying to kill your phone by tempting you with a throwback Apple logo.  Beware.

    Regards,

    Tom Fowler

Hi Tom - Thanks for the email - I thought about mentioning this on the last episode - and probably should have.  But in a nut shell it goes like this - DON’T change your iOS devices date manually back to January 1st 1970 - if you do your phone will be bricked.

Why would you ever even want to change your date to January 1st 1970 - well it has nothing with the TV show Life on Mars.  But rather to a fake and evil claim that doing so will give you a hidden easter egg of a retro’ 1970’s style Apple Logo.  IT does not - it just gives you a Pink Flyodd 1970’s another brick in the wall Brick of an iPhone.

Apple does claim a fix is on the way - that said - I will not get into exactly which iOS devices running which version of iOS are affected or why - just that I will say - the stove is hot - don’t touch it.

If you do touch it and change your date to January 1st 1970 out of curiosity - I have ZERO Day sympathy for you.

    iphone-5se-ipad-air-3-march-18/

More rumors on the rumors about the 4 incher.  The latest is that the event to announce the iPhone 5SE and a new iPad Air will be Tuesday March 15th - with both devices being available on March 18th.

Latest round of rumors has the 5SE body almost identical to the 5S.  but inside it would have the latest A9 processor - NFC chip for Apple Pay, support for always on siri activation.  the iphone 6 camera, but the ability to take live photos like the 6S.  Color options will be the same as the 6S as well - i.e. Silver and gold and rose gold and space Gray.

The iPad Air 3 will supposedly include the smart connector which would mean the option for a smart keyboard for it.  plus support for the Apple Pencil.  This would of course remain at the 9.7 inch size - and would have the A9X processor like the iPad Pro. But it might also have a rear flash for better pictures - because yes using the 9.7 inch iPad Air as a camera does not at all make you look like the dorkiest parent at your kids basketball game - just sayin.

And sticking with the last round of rumors - per the Apple watch - the March 15th event would only be about introducing new bands.

Some thoughts on this via the email bag:

    Hey Rob,

love your show. I have been thinking about the next Apple event coming up next month. Its been said that we will see the next iPad Air, iPhone 5se/6C/7C, Apple Watch bands. But in my prediction I think we will also get announcement about Apple Pay, meaning Apple will announce P2P payments and Apple Pay for eCommerce for websites. So we will get more than just PayPal to choose from.

    Hi Rob

I just received the Sikai remote cover for my   TV remote today and wanted to give my first impressions. It took 2 weeks and a day to arrive and came from the longest address I've ever seen. (see photo) That aside, I love the cover. I ordered the black and in my opinion it compliments the remote very well. It has a nice rubbery texture that feels sure in your hands as well as having humps on the back side so it fits in your hand nicely. I installed the tether even though I probably won't need it. Side note, in order to install the tether I used a needle and thread to maneuver the small cord through the tiny holes, it worked quite well. As far as the function, it does partially cover the track pad but not enough to be a hindrance. All in all, I feel the $12 was money well spent, considering it will protect the remote AND allow me to easily know which end to pickup.

This project has until March 29th at 2:01 AM CT to be funded with a goal of $75k.  So far they have about $1k pledged - like I said it is pretty early on.

Pricing on this is $10 for 1 or the option for $20 for 2 or $30 for 3 or $100 for 10 or even $500 for 50 - Nice Price breaks.

Deliver on this is slated for April 2016 if you buy one go clip - and May if you buy 2 or more.

That said - given no price breaks and an April delivery for ordering just one - that is exactly what I did - I did back this project - for one pair at $10 - because well I am always fighting with my earbud cords that magically seem to get tied in a Knot.  Hopefully this will help.

Again if you want to fund this one search for Go Clip - two words at kickstarter dot com or search for the link in the show notes for ep 383.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote “I’m more convinced than ever that, after an initial frenzy of publicity and sales to early adopters, iPhone sales will be unspectacular. iPhone may well become Apple’s next Newton.”

David Haskin, Computerworld, 26 February 2007

Let me just say this I liked the Newton - but when the Press tries to compare something Apples does and project it out to be a flop - the Poor Newton gets its name dragged through the mud.  Plus without the experience of the Newton on what to do and not do - the iPhone may not have been as Great as it was when it launched. iOS 9.3 beta 3 was made available this past week to Both devs and the public.

As with any new beta greater than 1 bug fixes for previous betas are part of the update - but beta 3 also had some new features.

    • Verizon Wi-Fi Calling

Just incase you were no on Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile - who all already had that feature - Just Sayin.

    • Beta 3 - Fixed Control Center icons in landscape
    • With beta 3 - there are Apple News settings in Sweden, possibly other countries - but no news app yet for Sweden.
    • Beta 3 Tweaked Night Shift explainer in Control Center (it now reads "From Sunset to Sunrise", previously was "From 22:00 to 08:00")
    • and Beta 3 Tweaked Lock/Unlock toggle in Notes outside of the share sheet

Looks like in about two more weeks we will see beta 4 and then some time in Mid March would be the Gold master.

    Hey Rob,

I found this article online and can totally see apple doing this to make customers get there broken screens fixed by apple employees and not local repair shops who can do it for a lot less!  I totally disagree on this matter this will also put a ton of repair shops out of business and make a lot of iPhone customers extremely mad and possibly leave iOS anyway here's the article on the guardian about the unfix-able iOS Restore error 53: http://www.theguardian.com/business/2016/feb/08/apple-

    under-pressure-lawyers-error-53-codes

I hope i'm wrong about this

    Thanks for all you do

    Regards

    Chris DeBrodie

Chris and many others thanks for sending in these articles about Error 53 - of which there seems to be a lot of mis-info or conflicting info.  First up from what I can see - this is not about replacing the screen that is causing the issue - but about replacing the touch ID.  Granted sometimes a repair shop might replace both - and it seems what Apple is doing is saying if someone is replacing the touch ID - it might be putting in a bogus touch ID designed to do bad things - and that is why devices that have the touch ID replaced by 3rd parties are finding with iOS 9 their devices are being bricked.

There are some reports of an iPhone 6 being damaged in Jan 2015 and having the touch ID button repaired and the iPhone then working fine for 10+ months - but once updated to iOS 9 - it then bricked.

Again this comes back to was the touch ID sensor replaced - if your screen is repaired but they keep the same touch ID sensor it does not seem to be an issue.

As you would expect the lawyers are already out with the class action lawsuits.

From the Billion Dollar chasers - I mean Lawyers that filled this suit

    Quote

"No materials we've seen from Apple ever show a disclosure that your phone would self-destruct if you download new software onto a phone,. If Apple wants to kill your phone under any set of circumstances and for any reason, it has to make it crystal clear to its customers before the damage is done."

"The error code 53 signals the death of the phone, and Apple's response has been to say 'you have no options; it's not covered under warranty, and you have to buy a new phone.’"

    Unquote

And from MacRumors on this  quote

MacRumors has, heard from a retail source that certain Apple Stores have received the go ahead from Apple to replace third-party screens and other components to resolve the issue. It is not yet clear if this replacement policy will be extended to all Apple Stores or if Apple will make an official comment on the situation.

    unquote

Long of the short - this is an ugly situation if your iPhone was one that was repaired by a 3rd party and is now bricked.

Part of me understands why apple updated the software - touch ID security is kinda sorta important and once a 3rd party touch ID is installed all security bets are off.

Lets hope that Apple extends that repair / replacement policy to all Apple stores and in the mean time if you have an iOS device with touch ID and the screen is cracked and you go to a third party repair service - MAKE SURE they don’t replace the touch ID - you need them to keep your original touch ID sensor.

If they can not guarantee that - then take it to apple for the repair for now.

This is sadly something we will be hearing about for a while - especially given up to now Apples relative silence on this issue.

Thanks to Dr. John on this next one - which is sticking with the Apple Screen theme.

As I mentioned recently I have switched from a big hunkin case to bumpies on each corner and screen protector.  But if you look at my iphone in the upper right the screen protector is raised a little.  I did not put it on just right.  And well it bugs me when I notice it.

If you ever put on a screen protector you know it is about 99% perspiration and another 99% luck.

Well Apple stores are going to offer a solution for you - they will be getting Belkins Screencare+ Application system.  IE an automated tool for installing a screen protector on your phone.  No more luck - no more bubbles - no more curing at your screen protector.

Belkin claims their system removes air bubbles and ensures a perfect fit for a screen protector for the iPhone.

This is for iPhone 6, 6S, 6Plus and 6S plus - with two options a $35 invisiglass shatterproof glass protector and a $20 anti-glare protector.

I think Philip Elmer Dewitt might listen to this show.

Late episode I talked about Apples PE and said it is lower than Dover corporation the least sexy company in America.

Well Philip Elmer Dewitt a few days later released a post titled - Apple Trades like a steel mill on its way out of business and well was all about Apples low PE ratio.

Hi Philip - Welcome back to the show.

Another one possibly listening to the last episode was Patrick Seitz of investors.com

On the last episode I said that Apples stock is going to be stuck in this holding pattern and the press will be negative until to late August and then a switch will flip and it will be hot again.  Well 4 days after the last episode Patrick released an article titled

Apple stock could struggle until second half of 2016

Hi Patrick - welcome back to the show.

Speaking of apple stock - the devil only had a chance to do a couple of figure 8’s last week - as Googles market cap dropped a bunch and Apple held steady - meaning Apple was and is once again the most valuable company by Market Cap.

So much for the Google to be first one to 1 Trillion dollar talk for now at least that talk has been put to bed.

    13:46

And speaking of beds - Normally on the nights I record the kids go sleep with mom - and I go and sleep in my Son’s Casper bed.  Kind of my reward for a long night getting out the show.  Sadly tonight I don’t get that reward.  I get some crappy spring mattress in my hotel room.

Casper Mattresses however are a mix of Latex foam and Memory foam. No noisy springs to wake up your significant other when you get up to sneak a snack in the middle of the night or in my case to keep waking me up in my hotel room.

And with Casper you get a 100 day risk free trial period.  You don't like it you get your money back and they come and pick it back up and donate it to a charity.

But just as important as quality is Pricing and the pricing is really great.   Twin Mattresses are just $500, they also have Twin XL for $600, Full for $750, Queen for $850 and then King and Cal King - for  $950.  That is less much much less than my iPad Pro setup.  And as I said you have 100 days to return it risk free. And if you go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code tii - you will save $50 off those prices -   Terms and Conditions Apply.

This is an american made mattress with delivery right now for the US and Canada only and it is free delivery. And When said mattress is delivered - it is from UPS - in a squarish box that you think no way is there a mattress in there - But you get a cool little tool to cut open the package and the mattress opens up and expands to form.  It is really cool Just google Casper Mattress unboxing.

And with Apple TV getting more and more apps - you know you are going to spend more than a 1/3 rd of your life in bed - is it not worth getting the best nights sleep possible - and that is what you will get with Casper.  Again to Save $50 off of the prices I mentioned go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code t i i - all lower case on the promo code.  again casper dot com / tii - promo code tii to save $50 - thanks Casper for the great mattress for my son and for sponsoring this show.

    Hi Rob,

In your latest podcast, you had asked for recommendations for Disney and photo collage.

I have used the official Disney App (My Disney Experience - Walt Disney World, free App) before and it was really great in notifying us on wait times for attractions, places to eat and their menus, and what's happening around you.

The photo collage App I use is Replay. It is great putting pictures together with different kinds of transitions and with background music. The best thing is, it as easy as picking the photos you want to include in the order you want. The basic App is free and additional In App purchase gives you different transition styles and music.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from Ryan Boyle who posted the following

    Quote

Would now be a bad time to buy an Apple Watch? In the news a lot of people seem to think a new one will be announced in March, but I believe Rob said in the last episode that only new bands would be coming out in March.

    Unquote

First let me say - On the last episode I was repeating the rumor de jur - which was that only the bands would be updated and not the hardware this year.   But a couple of weeks ago the rumor de jur was that the hardware would be getting updates too.  That all said I think the Apple watch is likely on a two year upgrade cycle for hardware at least.

Some of the responses to Ryan’s post were

Quote Apple will always come out with a new device. The Apple watch is amazing and if you want it why wait unquote - that from Jonah Salvatore.

Nic Brown said quote They are on sale at Best Buy for $100 off right now. There may be a new one announced but I doubt it, I think that it will be a two year refresh cycle. Just my two cents

    unquote

Dantagnan Bennett said quote You have to think a lot of people just bought the watch for Christmas it would be too soon for a new watch. unquote

And Target right now is also offering $100 off Apple Watches - so not just Best Buy with that offer right now.

So long of the short - what Jonah said - if you want it why wait - and with both Best But and Target offering $100 off - that seems like a good deal.  Still no promises a new device is not around the corner - it just does seem unlikely - unless you count those two big retailers with the $100 discount almost like they are trying to clear stock to make room for something new. Oh wait - sorry - did not mean to confuse you on what to do.  Ooopppsss.

Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts and comments in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

    From Barry Smitherman

quote For Elsie, who needed to make text over transparency. There's an app called "over" and it will do what she wants. I accidentally bought it a while back, and before I requested a refund, I thought I'd try it out. It's amazing for for photo editing/embellishment. Hello Rob,

I continue to love the show; I have even introduced some of the newly converted in my office to it. I wanted to discuss with you the idea surrounding the AppleCar. I have been trying to wrap my mind around it and I keep coming back to the Apple Watch Edition. It seams to me that Apple would spend quite a bit of money on the Car department and (in my opinion) not see a return in volume. Aside from the standard argument, I just wasn't seeing the turn around. Then, I was walking into my house the other day listening to your podcast. You were mentioning Harry's razors and I had just retrieved my wife's Ipsy bag from the mail (a monthly makeup kit if you were unfamiliar). That was when it came to me: subscription. There are tons of subscriptions everywhere. Entertainment: AppleMusic, Netflix, Hulu; Personal Care: Harry's, Ipsy, Trunk club, they even have services for making dinner! Suppose Apple creates an armada of AppleCare but instead of BUYing them you SUBSCRIBE to them. Follow me here Rob, you need to get from A to B. First you take out your phone and pull up maps, you locate your destination and you now know the route it take to get there. You have driving, transit, and walking. What if there was an option that showed AppleCar with a dollar amount next to it. You could place an order using ApplePay, the car shows up and takes you to your destination. It seams like a stretch but let's say you work in the city and you are subscribed to Apple Car for ______ whatever Apple chooses. You enter appointments into your calendar along with destinations. This is setting your ride!! Much like you can see travel time with ios9, you would see car arrival time. Parking, gas, insurance, car payments, all of that adds up and this could eliminate all of that very quickly.

Just a thought Rob, let me know what you think. Thanks for listening to my rant. Keep up the great work!!

    Regards,

    Brenton from Pittsburgh

So essentially a bunch of cars that can self drive and you request the car and they come to you where you are - you can then drive them to do what you need or let them drive for you - and when done - you pay your fee and are done.

This is a rumor on what Uber is working on - and on many levels it makes sense - IF and this is a very big - IF - state and city governments allow driverless cars with no one in them to drive around town.  That is a big big question mark.

But I think a bigger issue facing self driving cars is the issue about who is the car programmed to protect - you the driver or someone outside the car.  The scenario goes like this.  If the car sees someone in the street and the choice is hit them or swerve to miss and go off a cliff and kill the driver - which way will the car be programmed to react.

It is one thing to have the car choose to kill you - it is another for your to choose to swerve on your own.  No put your whole family in the car.  What would you do - hit the idiot in the middle of the road or drive your family off the cliff.

What if you knew that the car was programmed to drive off the cliff - would you ever put your family in that car?

That is the issue with driverless cars.  And one reason I will not likely ever own one.  I would rather trust my own decisions rather than have someone program them into my car for me.

Please don’t email me about all the accidents it would stop because of driver errors - I know - but it is not about those issues people will make a decision - it is what I just said - will you feel safer in control or out of control in your car.  Ask your self if you are more stressed flying in plane or driving your car to the airport to fly on the plane.  Then remember many more people die driving to and from the airport then they do on the flight.

Driver less cars - are something a couple of human generations away from mass adoption.  It will be gradual adoption - over a long period of time.  IMO.

    Hi Rob,

    My flash light doesn't work!!

I notice it sporadically not working. But it always started working after a network reboot. But I would have to reboot again in just a couple of days.

On an unrelated item with tech support, they said I should not have to reboot near that often.

The last update did resolve some sluggish actively but I still have this problem with the flash light.

I have heard that the native flash light app has malware that send info to foreign lands but I thought that was just with Android phones.

Do you have any idea what happening?

    Regards,

    Robin J

    Hi Robin,

The native flashlight app for iOS does NOT repeat does NOT have any malware - nor do any other native apps on iOS.

With Android - that is a completely different story - as some times 3rd party apps get natively installed on phones that could have malware on them out of the box - and yes there were stories about native flash light apps having malware for Android - for the most part this was from phones manufactured by a Chinese OEM.  Which there are 1000’s of in China.  To be fair - when looking into the stories about native Flashlight apps and malware - there was not a lot of proof that really did happen.  However 3rd party Flashlight apps you install from Apps stores in China - yeah there is lots of proof there of Malware in the Flashlight apps.

Per your issue - I would make sure you are updated to the latest version of iOS - as that is not an issue you should be having - but 100% it is not about Malware on the native flashlight app on iOS - the same 100% guarantee can NOT be given for all android phones.  Just sayin

    Hi Rob,

I am blind and Ios and voice over has revolutionized my quality of life and that of so many other blind and visually impared people around th world.  I get very disheartened when app developers ignore or break accessibility.  For example the AOL radio app used to be fully accessible but they redesigned  and it is no longer.  When I contacted aol radio their response was simply accessibility was not included in the update with the added insult of a comment that the contact was resolved.   Could you take a moment in your podcast to mention to developers how impoartant and easy it to make apps accessible?

    Hi Rob,

I was wondering if you were aware of any app where you can create a voting situation to send to multiple people. For example what is your favorite color? Blue, green, red, yellow and then set up a check box situation to just choose which one and have the results be available.

Hello Rob (and everyone in the TII community).

I am a frequent gamer on my iOS devices, but recently I've been having an occasional problem with Game Center. About once every couple weeks or so, my Game Center account will fail to automatically log on when I start up a game. Then, when I try to open the Game Center app or connect to Game Center from the Settings app, I will just get a white screen without the device being able to connect.

Once, I was unable to connect to Game Center for about two days, but then the problem just disappeared. Sometimes the problem will fix itself after I hard reset the device, but usually it requires several hard resets. Resetting Network Settings also fixed the problem once, but I don't want to have to do that every time this comes up.

Since more and more games now are requiring some kind of log on, registration or persistent network connection, this actually makes a few games I play regularly completely inaccessible until the problem corrects itself. If anyone else has had this problem and knows what's going on and what can be done about it, I'd really appreciate some advice.

Thanks for any help you can give, and for all the support you give to the iOS community.

    Regards,

    Mike

    Hi Rob

When I set up my wife's original iPad my contacts, apps etc were installed on it. This has been a contentious issue for years. So when I gave a new iPad 2, we took it to the Apple Store to avoid commingling of contacts. No joy!

How does one delete all or multiple contacts?

    Hi Rob,

In response to the couple looking for a communications method for cruise ship use that doesn't require Internet access, they might want to check out gotenna.com. This is a small 2 watt radio communications system that interfaces to the phone via Bluetooth. This system does not require even WiFi access, so it will work in places without any other wireless access. Cons: This uses the MURS radio frequencies. As such, they would want to make sure that MURS is available to be used unlicenesed in the countries they visit. But currently some popular cruise areas include: Caribbean Insular areas, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, United States Virgin Islands, American Samoa and many others. Also, they will need to ensure that the vessel is licesnsed in a country where MURS is legal to be used. They will technically require permission from the captain to operate on these frequencies just as they would with any of the radio frequencies such as FRS and GMRS. But if the ship rents out radios and allows passengers to bring their own onboard, it probably won't be difficult to obtain permission. I have no connection whatsoever with GoTenna; I haven't even purchased these devices for myself so I cannot speak as to quality. I just see the ads online quite a bit and the prospect intrigues me and if I wasn't already an amateur radio operator, I would probably buy and try them.

    Hi Rob,

For the Guy in the Boat. Connecting Via Bluetooth Apple TV. This article may help.

    Regards,

    Chris

And this article is titled - No Wifi - no problem - using Apple TV to mirror your device with out wifi.

It goes over how with a 3rd gen Apple TV - you can via Airplay and via bluetooth you can communicate to the Apple TV.

I would guess this still works with the a 4th gen Apple TV as well.

But will not with a 2nd gen Apple TV.

This tutorial talks about how to mirror your iOS device to the Apple TV again via bluetooth and AirPlay and not via wifi - which would solve Jeff’s issue.

There are 8 steps in the tutorial - which a link to is in the show notes for ep 382 - look for the one titled - No Wifi? No Problem.

Another nice Article from Jonny Evans at Computer World.

This one also having to do with the Apple TV - however just 4th gen this time.

He talks about some of the really good apps for getting content - specifically News content.

One app he mentions is the Watchup - one word - App.  Which offers a large selection of international, National and local news content from over 160 different sources - including Bloomberg, PBS, CNN, CBS Interactive, Financial Times, Fox News, and many others.

This apps is kind of like the Pandora of News for your Apple TV.

Right now it is just available for US customers and it appears to be Ad supported as in no cost to you Money wise.

They claim there are between 2,000 to 3,000 video clips available each day.

This is one after this episode is released I will be installing and checking out.

In the article he also talks about the AJ+ which is the Al Jazeera App and also the Fresco - F R E S C O - app which is a citizen journalism app.

Where you record from your iPhone and their iOS app and it gets put up for people to see on Apple TV.  And they claim you get paid when news outlets use your photos and videos.

Some some neat news related apps for Apple TV to check out.

    VOICEMAIL - Sim_Cards_Straight_talk

    Hi Rob,

I heard Eric's question about tagging photos in TII episode 380.

I wanted to respond because I do A LOT of photography with my iPhone and this is something I'd also like to be able to do.

Your response about using the Mac-based version of Photos to use Faces and do tagging is a pretty good one - but it's not always helpful when you're out and mobile and want to add information to a photo right then and there - before you forget it.

For instance, if I'm at a car show I might want want to add some detailed notes about something in the picture.

Or if I'm using my iPhone at a family reunion to take photos so I'll have my own copy of old family snapshots.  Often there's a story that goes with the photo.  It'd be nice to add a quick note as part of that photo and have it sync across to the version on my Mac

In the past I would write out a note and then take a picture of that note.

Not very high tech - but more importantly, I didn't always have paper and pen with me....

I found lots of apps that would put a caption ON the photo but that wasn't what I wanted.  I wanted to "tag" my photos with notes or keywords.

Finally I found an iOS app that has been somewhat helpful to me.  It's called EXIF EDITOR (by Harald Meyer).

It allows you to add text to the Item Description in the EXIF data of a photo (which is the field where photo tagging is stored).

Unfortunately, it does this by creating an exact copy of the photo - though this copy does carry over and preserve all existing EXIF data in the original photo - so you don't lose any quality or GPS or other data when you make this copy.

Since I don't want duplicates of every single picture I take, what I've done is this:

If I take several photos of something that needs a note attached I will select ONE of the photos and use EXIF editor to enter all the information I need to keep.

Then, later, on my Mac I can reenter that data into appropriate photos and delete any duplicate photos.

(Usually, I end up keeping the "copy" of the photo with the notes and deleting my original version.)

But a shortcoming of this approach is that the Item Description field in EXIF data is unfortunately not searchable by Apple's Spotlight, Siri, or Photo features on your iOS device.

So it's not going to help you find certain pictures faster - which is something Eric asked to be able to do (and I'd also like).

In short, there's really no way I've discovered (yet) to accomplish what Eric and I would both like to have available - the ability to tag iOS photos and have those tags be searchable.  I'm really hoping your other TII listeners will have good suggestions on this topic - but I thought I'd share my workflow in case anyone finds this helpful.

With the ongoing investment and commitment to iPhotography that Apple has made with their devices and apps, I am hopeful and optimistic that Apple will continue to improve their photography ecosystem - and this functionality might eventually be added as a feature. Ideally, I'd like to see them add a "tag" button that would allow you to input information directly into the photo's Item Description EXIF just like they have on the Mac version of Photos.  It could be part of their non-destructive-editing like they have with cropping and filters.  Just a thought.

    for-ios-9-2-1-ios-9-2-ios-9-3-beta-shown-off-in-new-video.html

This next one is more of a tease type article - and it is that the jailbreak teams have released some videos of an untethered jailbreak for iOS 9.2.1 and iOS 9.3 Beta 1.  But in the description of the video - the jailbreak dev says there are no plans to make the jailbreak available to the public any time soon.  Was more of an Hey - we can do it - just want to show you we are smart.

Of course until iOS 9.3 is released you really would not expect them to release it.

The good news is that one iOS 9.3 is available at this point at least it looks like a jailbreak is Possible.  The bad news is - Apple now knows it is possible - and maybe that will cause them to double their efforts to figure out - and patch that before 9.3 is released.

Just because they can jailbreak the beta - it does not mean that jailbreak will still work when it is gold master.

But still good news that it is possible and it was not a post of them saying 9.3 beta patch the exploit they were using.

    TRANSCRIPT FOR EPISODE 381

Welcome to the show I am your host Rob and this is the Today in iOS podcast -  First up I want to thank STEVE for sending in the music you hear in the background. STEVE wrote:

    Hi Rob,

This entire piece of music was created, composed, recorded, mixed, produced, and sent using the iPad Pro.

Due to power of iPad Pro, I was able to do the original piece of almost an hour long (from which this is 6 minutes was edited to), using 8 apps simultaneously:

    Auxy Music Creation by Auxy

https://appsto.re/us/R5Vn2.i (very cool sequencer as MIDI controller),

     DrumJam by Sonosaurus LLC

    https://appsto.re/us/isAMF.i,

     Animoog by Moog Music Inc.

    https://appsto.re/us/elkhC.i,

iFretless Bass by Ngo Minh Ngoc

    https://appsto.re/us/RcRKE.i,

iFretless Guitar by Ngo Minh Ngoc

    https://appsto.re/us/SDmjL.i

& Tachyon by Wizdom Music LLC

    https://appsto.re/us/8JBDG.i.

All (except for Auxy) were linked together in the input slots and used together using Audiobus by Audiobus Pty Ltd

https://appsto.re/us/I2JsH.i  which also had MultiTrack DAW by Harmonicdog

https://appsto.re/us/15qOt.i (DAW = Digital Audio Workstation or virtual recording studio app) in the output slot, into which the five tracks of audio were recorded, processed and mixed down.

The first four apps all controlled by Auxy (DrumJam MIDI clock sync), recorded live (no overdubs) into MultiTrack DAW via AudioBus (Auxy does not support either AudioBus or iOS Inter App Audio but does support virtual MIDI, both on the device & through a network) and Tachyon played live using its very cool multi-touch UI.

The original composition/improvisation, and recording, mixdown & mastering of the one hour piece took about about 5 hours total.  Due to the great battery life of the iPad Pro, and it's speed and 4gb of RAM, all was as smooth as silk, with no worries at any point in the process.  This is the first time having this experience on iOS for me (having played and worked with iOS music since 2010).

Further trimmed & fade-in & fade-out added and audio exported with AudioShare app (a must have for anyone working with audio in any form, as it easily allows, importing exporting, quick edits and generally all forms of curation and management of audio files) for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch: http://kymatica.com/audioshare.

Thanks STEVE for the music and folks I will put the full song at the end of the episode.   I also want to thank MATT for sending in the Artwork for today's show.  MATT wrote the following:

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote ““Consumers are not used to paying another couple hundred bucks more just because Apple makes a cool product. Some fans will buy it, but for the rest of us it’s a hard pill to swallow just to have the coolest thing.” unquote

Neil Strother, NPD Group, 22 January 2007

You would think for a company like NPD group that does market research as their core business - they would have been a little more in touch with well the Market.  Yes - Some People will pay extra for something that is cool - but they really will pay in mass if it is cool - and better than everything else.

    beta-2-to-public-beta-testers/

In news - iOS 9.3 Beta 2 was released last week.

What is new in the Beta 2 vs Beta 1 -  Well there are updates settings for Night Shift along with a new toggle in Control Center which kind of looks like the all seeing eye from the Illuminati.

via the control center you have the option to Turn on for Now or turn on until tomorrow.

There is now the ability to view your apple watch face in the iPhone Watch App.

There is the removal of the Wallpaper option from the Settings App 3D touch quick action menu.

I would expect a beta 3 to be released likely next week - which will likely be about fixing any found bugs.

Then two weeks later beta 4 to fix the bugs created when fixing the bugs for beta 3.

Then a few weeks later there would be the Gold Master Release - which would put us around mid March for the Gold Master Release for iOS 9.3.

    To the email bag:

    Hi Rob,

iOS 9.3 beta 2 drastically improved my iPhone 5s battery and is really stable definitely worth a look.

    Keep up the good work

    Regards,

    Dan W

Hi Dan - thanks for the feedback - and my Wife let me actually install the Beta 2 of iOS 9.3 on her phone when I showed her your email. She was still on 9.2 and having battery issues where it was dying much much to quickly.  So I upgraded her to 9.3 Beta 2 - and her phone is working much much better.  9.3 is probably the most solid single dot Beta I have tested.  It does bode well for the GM release.

If you are a fan of the video cinematography of Blair Witch - you are in luck. Facebook launched Live Video Streaming to all US iPhone users - with the feature rolling out to the rest of the world over the coming weeks.

Once you have your live stream established - you can then bore the living be-jesus out of your friends and family - and better yet - you can see which of your friends are watching and still watching and still watching.

And then you can even see and participate in a real time comment stream - because nothing says compelling video like responding to comments while your are live.

Once you end the video - it will be saved to your timeline - so any of those friends or relatives you did not bore to death with the live stream - can now be bored to death with your replay of you standing in front of the Belagio Fountains and talking about how cool they are. and ohhhhh and ahhhhhs.

If you are thinking Facebook Live Video sounds a lot like Periscope and Meerkat - BINGO.   See Periscope is owned by Twitter and Facebook needed this to combat Periscope.  Plus it is not a secret it was coming - They started testing this with celebrities in August and select users in December and now All US iPhone users and soon for those outside the US as well.  Android users - yeah you will need to wait a little bit as well.

Thanks to Tash and a few others for this next one.

Which I really did not want to talk about - but since a few people sent it or similar link in - I thought I would talk about it.

Seems there is a website link - again - that people are sharing on social media - that caused Safari to Crash on iOS devices and Desktops.

The issue according to 9 to 5 mac and others is that the site you are sent to is accessing over and over your browser history - 1000’s of times really quickly.  And this causes Safari to crash - and crash hard -where you need to restart your device or computer to get past it.

There does not seem to be anything evil afoot - just annoyingness at its best.

This issue also somewhat affects Chrome, FireFox and IE users - but not to the extent it does Safari users.

Expect an update to fix this issue in the next round of updates - which if you are on an iOS device or a mac - will be easy to get and update once it is out.

    http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2016/02/01/google-and-

    other-bets-alphabets-q4-earnings-live-blog/

Yes - the devil is wearing ice skates as Google now has a larger Market Cap than Apple - with Cash included.  Well it did on Tuesday Feb 2nd.

Which made me go back to something I wrote on Jan 28th 2014 for ep 295 of Tii.

Quote - Apples Market Cap minus cash is 209.9 Billion dollars.  Just a little above last years 174 Billion in totals revenue.  Microsoft - which had less then half of apples Revenue at 82.8 billion - has a Market cap less cash of 222.1 Billion.  And Finally Google - with Revenue in all of 2013 of 59.8 billion - has a market cap less cash of 336.3 Billion.  Yes Google which has 1/3rd the revenue of Apple - has a market cap less cash of 1.6 Times that of Apples.  unquote

Per the latest quarterly reports from Apple and Google:

Apple Cash in hand - $215.7 Billion

Google Cash in hand - $73.1 Billion

As of end of Day on Tuesday Feb 2nd.

Apple's Market Cap less cash = $308.2 Billion.

Google's Market Cap lass cash = 452.8 Billion

This is 1.47 Times Apples MCLC

Apples total revenue last year was $235 Billion in Calendar year 2015

    vs 74.5 Billion for google.

Or yet once again Google which has less than 1/3rd the Revenue of Apple has over 1.47 times the Market Cap less cash of Apple.  Once again it seems like fundamentals will come into play at some point.  Oh and now some people are writing that Google will be the first 1 Trillion dollar company - hey wait - were not the experts just writing that about Apple in the Spring?

Why Yes - yes they were - CNN.com on April 17th 2015 had an article titled - Apple could be America’s first 1 Trillion dollar company.

Marketwatch.com had a post titled - Apple to surpass $1 Trillion valuation this year - that posted on April 28th 2015.

Wow how times have changed in less than a year.

A little update - as I wrote the notes for this segment Tuesday Night.  On Wednesday Feb 3rd - Seems someone passed around some smelling salts on Wallstreet - and reality set in and Apple rose and Google dropped a bunch - and at the end of day Wednesday Apple’s Market Cap was back over that of Googles - with cash included.  Still when you look at with out the cash - it does not make sense.  So either Apple is way undervalued or Google is way overvalued or some combo there of.

    13:30

    http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/the-

    iphone-has-not-peaked/

So what was the press’s take on the Apple quarterly call.

From The Guardian - iPhone Sales Flatline.

From Gizmodo - iPhone sales have finally stalled

And many many others not even close to that nice.

There are other articles stressing that iPhone sales are great and that 74.8 Million are more than any quarter ever.  Yes true - but only be 300k more - and Apple never did say how much they put into channel inventory - and chances are if they had - the over all number last quarter of units put in Customers hands - vs last quarter of 2014 - well it would have been lower.

And on top of that Tim Cook said this quarter vs this quarter a year ago - there will be a drop.  And that has to do with many factors - 1 a year ago was when the new iPhones launched in many new countries - not so this year as most big countries were launched last quarter.

And the end of 2014 came with demand exceeding supply - this new years that was not the case.

So yes - iPhone sales year over year for this quarter are going to drop - and really last quarter when you count iPhones put in customers hands - it was really Apples first year over year decline.

That said - it is not all doom and gloom - because all the competitors - they are far far worse off.  And Apple is doing something none of them are doing as well.  Apple - now bare with me hear - because if you are an Android person - this might now make sense - but Apple you see - they actually make money from selling their phones.  Apple actually seems to be the only one that seems to be able to do that.

I know I have said for Years that the S level updates are the best updates.  But sadly S level updates are below the skin - and Apple iPhone buyers seem to really like their iPhones to look different than their last iPhone.

I am not saying we iPhone buyers are shallow and care more about looks than specs - but well - Foot - Shoe - and we have a match.

This is looking to be an interesting year - and one I am going to guess will remain negative towards apple and the iPhone for most of it - at least until late August when a switch will be thrown and the press will be talking exactly the opposite and speculate the next iPhone is better than sliced bread.

My whole point on this - and yes I have one - It was just really well hidden - is that The iPhone is not dead - Apple is making lots and lots of money with it.  It is still selling better than any other smartphone by a wide margin.  And regardless of how the press paints the picture - the iPhone is just fine - even if year over year - the S series going forward will be taking a step back from the non- S versions.

    17:26

Harrys late last month sent me over a nice box of goodies. When it came to the house my wife asked me if I had purchased more Harry’s product - I said no - they just sent me some additional items - and I asked why she was upset - she said - there goes her Valentines day present idea.

The wife knows I really love my Harry’s products and I know you will to.

and if you go to harrys dot com - that is h a r r y s dot com and use the promo code t i i - you will save $5 on your first order.

In that kit I received some of the shaving gel - which is so nice.  No Phosphates not toxic chemicals - just good stuff for your skin.

Even Ben Greenfield gave it the thumbs up.

The blades are incredible - there are 5 of them - not 3 or 4 - but 5.  No cuts no burn - and the best shave I have ever had and a really great price.  Why Pay $32 for an 8 pack of blades when you can get them 1/2 that price at Harrys.com   And yes I do buy them - they don’t just send me samples all the time.  I actually now have enough blades to get me through not just 2016 but also likely most if not all of 2017 as well.  Definitely will be set for 2017 once Fathers day comes around.

Harry’s great shave at a great price was not about luck either. Harry's went and found a German blade factory that was almost 100 years old and purchased it.  Harry’s owns the most important part of the razor - the blade and by cutting out the middle men on both sides means they can keep the price low to you.

Plus Harrys as an organization helps those looking for jobs - by donating 1% of their sales and 1% of their time to help prepare people for professional success.  Yes a shave that feels great from a company you can feel great about.

Once again go to Harrys.com now and save $5 off when you enter the code - t i i with your first purchase.  That is h a r r y s dot com and enter the coupon code T I I at check out to save $5 on your first purchase and start shaving better in 2016

    VOICEMAIL - Peter_Austin_answr_wazes_when_to_leave

    Hi Rob,

For Kevin in episode 380 who wants to know if there is an app that would tell him what time to leave to arrive on time for an appointment based on traffic conditions; I'd say that's an inbuilt feature of ios9. I have on my today widget a notification every morning that tells me what time I need to leave to arrive at work on time. Works great. It also sends a notification if traffic is unusually heavy and updates me on what time to leave.

So long as you properly enter your destination in the appointment  letting iOS 9/proactiv figure out the location then you should be fine. Especially of you go to the same places every day or regularly (even if it's different places regularly on set days of the week it remembers and tell me what time to leave home.

But yeah waze's recent update does something similar too.

    Regards,

    Tosin O

    Hi Rob,

    On Episode 380, Per Kevin

I recently discovered by accident that the native calendar and maps app on the iPhone will do this for you automatically, and will send the notifications to your Apple Watch. If you add the address to your calendar appointments, it will send you a notification to tell you the current traffic conditions and when to leave your current location to arrive at your appointment on time.

Our family uses a shared calendar, and I have it set as my default. All appointments my wife and children add to the calendar automatically generate prompts for me when it is time to leave. What’s great is that no matter who adds it to the calendar, I get the prompt, saving me from having to add each event myself to receive this alert.

If you are not seeing this, it may need to be enabled by going to Settings on your iPhone —> Next, tap "Mail, Contacts and Calendars,"—> Then, scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap "Default Alert Times" —> On the next screen, toggle the switch for "Time to Leave” from grey to green.

You will note on this screen, the description and caveat stating if your appointment is more than 3 hours away, the device will not send you an alert.

I hope it works as well for Kevin and other listeners, as it does for us.

Rob, Love the show, Your show has so many times, given the answers to problems before they occurred for me or my kids. You’ve saved me hours of time trying to solve problems when they arise. I recommend this podcast to all of my friends.

    Thanks,

    Ken from Southwest Florida

Hi Rob - Love the show.  In response to Kevin’s question in episode 380 about an app that can give him notifications on what time to leave for work.  It’s already built into IOS!  Go into Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services. and turn on Frequent locations.  According to Apple it uses  Frequent Locations: To learn places that are significant to you, your iOS device will keep track of places you have recently been, as well as how often and when you visited them. This data is kept solely on your device and won't be sent to Apple without your consent. It will be used to provide you with personalized services, such as predictive traffic routing.  I turned this on and now when I swipe down in Notifications - my phone will tell how long it should take to get to work or back home.  If you have appointments in your calendar with their location, it will notify you how long it will take to get there.  Recently I had a doctors appointment after work - it notified me how long it would take to get to the doctors from work.  I would assume that all apps that would provide this service is going to use the same information; your location, places you frequent, calendar appointments, weather, and other crowd sourcing info.  Guess it all depends on how much info your ok with providing and what companies you trust. Personally I do trust Apple and will provide this info for the convenience.

Thanks for all you do and thanks to the google plus community for what they do

    Regards,

    James Cipriano

    Hey Rob,

there is an app that sends notifications to my Apple Watch in regards to what time I should leave for appointments due to traffic conditions. The Google app works very well for me.

    Regards,

    Mike

    Hey Rob,

I'm sure everyone is screaming this into their audio devices… lol

iOS have feature to give advance reminders of when to leave based on traffic, it's already builtin using iOS Calendar & Maps…

    • just create a calendar item with time date and location (make sure on the item info filed the Mimi map displays showing the location, if you do not get the map then iOS will not monitor traffic to that destination).

    • in the info panel, select travel time option and start point as current location or home for example. iOS will monitor traffic conditions from where you are to your destination.

    • select mode of transportation (walking, car, public)

    • select to receive sound and display notifications and you will get notifications on iOS and in the "Today View" pull down shade.

I'm sure Apple can simplify this process or even make it automatic without user going through the setup process for each calendar item, but it gives the user the flexibility of using that feature if they need it or don't know it exists until they do need it. Lol

Today in iPhone was my first podcast...  On my Windows Phone...  I still listen to every episode!

With the exception of using an iPhone 3gs (gave it to my wife, and she has had several iOS phones since), I have used Microsoft phones since around 2007.  I have always listened to the TII podcast because I am the family tech support.

I have finally given up on the Windows Mobile system and got my 6S+ today.  When I entered my account information, it copied all of my wife's information (texts, call log, messages, etc) since she has been using it on my account.  We have always backed up her phone, bought apps, and basically done everything using my account since it was the only phone.

Is there a way to transfer this phone to her own account using her e-mail address?  I know about the family accounts and plan to use this system for me, my wife, and my phones, but need to get her phone switched over to her separate account.

Let the Windows Phone abuse fly...  Then help me with a solution please.

Syncios should surely be able to handle it. Did you try getting in touch with their customer service team? At first thought, I would think that you would need to log out of all of her Apple accounts on the 'old' phone Before trying to transfer data to the new phone (but I am not familiar with Syncios) or it may pick up the Apple Account settings as well and put those on the new device.

You 'can' do this, for sure. It is possible no doubt, you just have to do the processes in the right order. It takes patience, for sure. Easiest solution is for you to get new Apple acct. and let her have that one.

There was an interesting article from Business Insider titled - quote Apple’s gigantic iPad Pro outsold MS entire Surface Lineup last quarter and it was only on sale for 6 weeks. unquote

Yeah for king of the pithy post titles.

I say the article is interesting because Apple clearly did not break out how many iPad Pro’s they shipped - heck they did not even hint at it.

But according to IDC - they estimated Apple shipped over 2 Million iPad Pro’s last quarter because well they said so.

And because they said so IDC says MS only shipped a total of 1.6 Million Surface Tablets last quarter.

IDC said - hey will were are here and having fun pulling items from our posterior - lets pull numbers for all the other Tablets out there as well.

And when you look at IDC’s ummm Estimates - they have Apple with 16.1 Million iPads shipped last quarter and the number 1 seller of tablets.

Sammy was number 2 with 9 Million shipped.

Amazon was number 3 with 5.2 million shipped.

Lenovo was number 4 with 3.2 Million shipped

and Huawei was 5th with 2.2 Million tablets shipped last quarter.

Others which MS was lumped into totaled 30.2 Million tablets shipped last quarter and that means over all there were 65.9 Million tablets shipped last quarter and just 24.4% of those were usable - I mean had an Apple logo on them.

There was a lot of posts out there about Apple recalling over a decades worth of AC Adapters.

First note this is about the prongs that go on certain adapters that allow the swiping out of the prongs - not the AC part of it.

    From Apple

    quote

Apple has determined that, in very rare cases, the two prong Apple AC wall plug adapters designed for use in Continental Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Argentina and Brazil may break and create a risk of electrical shock if touched. These wall plug adapters shipped from 2003 to 2015 with Mac and certain iOS devices, and were also included in the Apple World Travel Adapter Kit.

Customer safety is always Apple's top priority, and we have voluntarily decided to exchange affected wall plug adapters with a new, redesigned adapter, free of charge. We encourage customers to exchange any affected parts using the process below.

Note: Other wall plug adapters, including those designed for Canada, China, Hong Kong, Japan, United Kingdom, and United States and Apple USB power adapters are not affected by this program.

    cook-s-apple-s-focus-on-india-is-insanely-great.html

One of the things Tim Cook commented on during last weeks conference call was Apples new focus on India.   And there is a nice article from Jonny Evans at Computer world titled - Tim Cook’s Apples focus on India is insanely great.

He mentions in India - Apple currently only has about a 2% smartphone market share - clearly not a good penetration and the worst in any of the BRIC countries.

We mentioned recently on the show Apple was working to bring down prices of their devices in India - which had been artificially high in the past.

Jonny talks about Apples smaller 4 Inch iPhone 5Se as a potential device to better address the market - but he also points out that for many people in India and other BRIC countries for that mater - a smartphone is not something people get to compliment their computer - it is their computer.

And with an expected growing of the middle class in India as well - there will be more and more consumers in india where an iphone will be greatly desired - as long as prices are kept reasonable.

Apple learned how to market to emerging markets as is evidences by their success in China - but can they duplicate that in India.

One thing that could help to re-ignite iPhone sales numbers is a pick up in the BRIC countries not named China.  But even if Apple did duplicate in India the % of smartphone market share - it would a much smaller number of unit sales.

The estimated size of the middle classes in the BRIC countries are:

    11.2 Mil in Brazil

    4.5 Mil in Russia

    23.6 Million in India

    and

    108.7 Million in China

So the Brazil, Russia, India combined and tripled is about the size of China’s middle class.  Just to keep things in Perspective.

    parting-with-cash-to-fuel-planet-apple-evolution/

One of the news stories or rumors floating out there the end of Jan was that Apple was looking to acquire a content company to get more content on to Apple TV.

And the key name being thrown around is Time Warner - which would get Apple - HBO, TBS, TNT, CNN and Warner Bros Studio.  Yes - that would count as content for sure.

Problem is that would also cost Apple at least $60 Billion dollars.

Given apples biggest acquisition and biggest by a wide margin was Beats for 3 Billion dollars - I just see an acquisition 20 times that size very very questionable at best.

and then there are all the issues with Time Warner Cable and the deals for Content on other cable providers.

Plus Apple already has a pretty good relationship with HBO and the HBO Now app on Apple TV - so not seeing what this gets them that would make such a huge huge leap in acquisitions make any sense.

    http://9to5mac.com/2016/01/27/ipad-air-3-march-event-

    new-apple-watch-bands/

In the rumor Mill we find a report from 9 to 5 Mac about a March event - which they say will likely be the week of March 14th.  This according to quote sources unquote - for which no other info was given.

The Sources claim at said week of March 14th event - there are three key things Apple will introduce

    1. New Apple Watch 2

    2. 4 Inch iPhone 5SE

    and

    3. an iPad Air 3 - which we would imagine would get most if not all of the internals of the iPad Pro - just with a 9.7 inch screen.  There was also an extra rumor nugget for the iPad Air 3 - saying it will get a rear facing flash for the camera.

Ummm - No - at least not the rear flash.

    43:39

    http://9to5mac.com/2016/02/02/march-15-event-4-inch-

    phone-new-ipad-apple-watch/

And then 6 days later 9 to 5 Mac had an update to the rumor - now saying it will be on March 15th that the event happens and it will be for the iPhone 5SE, iPad Air 3 and Apple Watch band updates.

Pricing of the 5SE is rumored to be $450 for the 16 don’t by me GB version.  With a 64 buy me GB version also available.

That $450 price is what the current price of the iPhone 5S is now.

So this would mean either that unit is discontinued or discounted further.

Some additional details / rumors were given for the iPad Air 3 - such as it getting the 4 speakers like the iPad Pro and a smart connector and a smart keyboard to connect to the smart connector.  Essentially think a 9.7” version of the iPad Pro - but again with the rumor of a rear flash.

Per the Apple Watch updates - this would be focused on New Bands and new software - it does not sound like new internals or hardware - just bands - yawn and software - maybe Yawn?

The question they kind of raise is are these updates media event worthy where select favored press are invited in or will it be an online event only.

Once Apple gets their Spaceship campus done - one thing it will have is a theater for these type of events.   And l would guess these updates would at that time get a live event.  But for now - it will be interesting to see what happens or if there is a one more thing to be intro’d.

    http://appleinsider.com/articles/16/02/02/munster-4-

    iphone-doesnt-make-sense-for-rumored-apple-event-in-march

Oh and how confident our we that an iPhone 5SE or what ever the new 4 Incher will be called will be at the event - well right now a lot more confident.

Why - because often wrong Uncle Gene Munster - just said it does not make sense for it to be intro’d at this event.

And he also says the Apple watch will be updated to an S version.

So yeah - that confirms the Watch Band and software only rumor too.

And he said the iPad Air 3 would have force touch - yup we can count on that not to be in the iPad Air 3 as well.  Like I said - think iPad Pro but 9.7 inches - that means NO force touch.

But Uncle Gene did not mention a rear flash - so maybe that is real after all.

Uncle Gene is often like George Castanza - just go with the opposite of what he says and you will be right.  Just Sayin

    working-on-new-wireless-charging-tech-for-ios-devices

    Hi Rob,

I heard inductive charge doesn’t work through metal.

Also at the end of the article makes a good point if headphone jack is missing you can still have wired audio headphone while charging (magnetically/inductively/wirelessly)

    Regards,

    Michael

And the article he mentions is titled - Apple Reportedly working on new wireless charging tech for iOS devices.

Essentially if you have read a biography of Telsa - yeah that is where this rumor is going.

We are not talking about some charging puck or matt - heck I had a wireless charging case for my iPhone 3GS right after it came out.

Wireless charging matts and pucks really don’t buy you much vs plugging in - you still need to be charging in a specific place.

What the rumor here is saying is that apple is looking at charging their devices from a distance.

A lot of this rumor seems to be fueled from the removal of the headphone jack - the logic goes if the headphone jack goes away - that leaves the lightening port to plug in your headphones - if you headphones are plugged in there - than you can’t charge your phone - so you need wireless charging and if Apple is going to do wireless - then they would do something really special - and ditch the matt or puck - i.e. something that requires really close proximity charging

And to find a solution we need to go back to the 90’s as in 1890’s and to Wireless Transmission of Power or Non-Herzian Waves as it was referred to by Tesla.  Essentially the idea is powering a device from a distance wirelessly.  Ok - it would be a bit different here but the basics are the same.

Will we see this for the iPhone 7?  Most likely not - it just seem like a major jump - and there is a movie from the 90’s - 1990’s  that it makes me think of - Johnny Mnemonic.  In that movie people are suffering from Black Shakes which comes from over transmission in the air.

What will happen to us with all this remote wireless power transmission in the air.  How long until we are all sterile or picking up AM transmission in our fillings.   10 Points for the TV show that had an episode about that plot point.

Anyway remote Wireless Power - or Non-Herzian Waves sounds cool and all at the top level - lets see where we are in September on this on.  I am guessing right were we are now - which is just with a wild rumor and we will be moving this on to the iPhone 8 rumor bingo card.

    http://finance.yahoo.com/news/microsoft-google-

    learning-hard-apple-223832955.html

Earlier we talked about how the iPad is still the best selling Tablet.

And how it might be that the iPad Pro line alone beat all the Surface tablet lines combined last quarter even though it was only on sale for half the quarter.

Well there was an interesting article titled - Microsoft and Google are learning how hard it is to be like Apple - and it is from Business Insider.

The gist of the article is that what Apple has done with the quality of the iPad’s both hardware and software is something neither MS or Google is close to duplicating at this time.

They have a quote in there from a review from AnandTech per Google’s Pixel C Tablet that says

    quote

At this point, I don’t know if I can really recommend any high end Android tablets in good conscience, because I know they won’t be offering the buyer what they deserve for such a high price. This applies even more so to the Pixel C, which has stability issues that I can’t believe exist on such an expensive tablet with both the hardware and software designed by the same company.

    unquote

    Yikes.

    The article ends with this:

    quote

The inescapable conclusion is that Apple's lead doesn't just come from its mega-ma-niacal control. Maybe Apple's focus on the user experience above all else is much harder than it looks. And Microsoft and Google are figuring that out the hard way.

    Hi Rob,

Can't Jeff just use a personal Hotspot to create a wifi network on the boat with data?

    Regards,

    Bernard

    Rob,

Jeff wanted to mirror Netflix to an Apple TV on his boat, but he has no wifi. Perhaps he could try turning his iPad into a personal hotspot and then stream directly from the Apple TV instead of using AirPlay.

    Regards,

    Jon

Hi rob! I want to respond to Jeff the magician on a boat, 3days a week! Nice life.

I'm guessing the iPad Jeff uses, have a sim card. I've used routers with a cellular connection before, he might be able to buy a router with a sim card function and connect all his devices through that? Set up his own network on the boat, and be able to stream to the Apple TV from all devices on the network. Now I'm from Sweden and all your cellular providers might have different rules, when it comes to what you can plug your sim card into. But I hope not! That's stupid!

I assume he needs another SIM card for his iPad after that, just to unlock it, or mabye not? Haven't  had a cellular iPad before, I always share wifi from a iPhone that's always with me..  In Sweden I can get a new sim card with a new phone number attached to it for free, like I did when I turned an old, screen cracked iPhone 4 to an security cam, and a controller for my Philips hue lights.

Be sure to limit the network usage on all devices so they don't use up all the data with updates and so on.

    Hope this helps!

    Regards

    William the hydraulic valve machinist

    Hi Rob,

Fellow listener Jeff was looking for a fix for his boat.   I bought an adapter from Apple that connects my iPad/and iPhone directly to the tv into the HDMI port.     I used that until I bought an Apple TV --and still use it when I travel!!!

I am looking for an app that can do text and have transparent background.

The result would be a file that can be used to create business cards or even tshirts.

This kind of stuff can easily be done in Illustrator...

Do you or the audience know of a good app for iOS that can do this.

Second one - I am looking for an App where I can put in multiple pictures of myself as I am loosing weight - I have been taking pictures each day - and I want an app - where it takes multiple pictures and morphs from one to the next to the next and so on to show you the change.  If you know of a good app that is easy to use that does that let me know.  I know I could set with iMovie where I bring in each of the images and transition from one to the next - but I was hoping there was something else specifically designed for this.

So folks please email me today in iOS at gmail dot com with apps Per Disney WORLD and also Apps per putting in a lot of pictures and morphing from one to the next and so on.

    Thanks for your help.

    only-recording-case-for-iphone#/

Thanks to Aric for this next one.

Which is an indie go go project called JIC - the first and only recording case for iPhone.

This one had a goal of $25k - as in past tense - they have raised over $31k - and have until Feb 24th for additional funding.

The description on this one is

    quote

With JIC, your phone case IS your recorder! Instantly press record during any conversation (in-person or on the phone) no matter who called who or how far into the conversation you are. Immediately start to capture the talk directly onto the provided 2GB microSD card. Once you press stop, you can instantly playback what you just recorded.

    unquote

Pricing on this is $29 for the early bird special while they last.  Which will get you the JIC case a 2GB Micro SD Card, rechargeable battery and USB cable.

In the FAQ it says it does not work with the iPhone 6+ - but it does work with the iPhone 5 and above.

I am a little concerned about the low price on this - $29 seems too good to be true - add that to them not showing two sizes - just one - but saying it will work for the iPhone 5 and 6 ?  Huh????

Anyway if you have a quote iPhone 5 and above unquote - but not the 6+ or 6S+ and are interested in this - check out  JIC Case at Indie Go go dot com or in the links in the shows notes for ep 381.
