iOS Artwork - iTem 0419 and Episode Transcript

    TRANSCRIPT EPISODE 419

Welcome to the show I am your host Rob and this is the Today in iOS podcast -

Sorry no music for this episode.  I am all out of music created on an iOS device.

I want to thank BARRY for sending in the Artwork for today's show.  BARRY wrote the following:

    Hi, Rob.

Here's a pic I shot of my family while on vacation this past summer. It's a HDR shot with a 6s plus. I added the text with the app, Over. I tried to make it look like sky writing, but there wasn't a cloud type font.

    Regards,

    Barry S

Thanks BARRY, for sending in this artwork and folks you can see BARRY'S artwork in the FREE Tii App via the BONUS button for ep 419 - or at instagram.com/todayinios and also as a stand alone post in the VIP section and at Facebook.com/todayinios.

If you have some artwork and or music you have created on your iOS device that you would like to share with the audience please email it to me at today in iOS at gmail dot com and please make sure to include which app or apps you used to create said artwork and or music.

One thing I would love to do this year - is if you can get a picture of yourself in front of your local Apple store - Take that picture - put the Tii or Today in iOS branding on it - and also the City and state or Country on the artwork saying which apple store it is.  I would like to kick that off starting in April with the 10 year anniversary of the show.

AND as I mentioned I am completely out of Music - so if you have some music you created on an iOS device - please  send it in.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote -- quote

“If you look at the customers we have on BB10 so far, 55 per cent of them are coming from [Apple’s operating system] iOS and Android, so obviously we have a large base of potential customers we can convert. How better to reach that audience than on the digital device they have with them all day? I see that as a great opportunity for us and we are going to over-index mobile marketing for that reason.” unquote

And then in Nov 2013 - Frank was no longer at Blackberry.  Nuff said

    finished-ios-1021-update-bringing-minor-fixes

Well iOS 10.2.1 finally made it to Gold master - and was released this week.  This after 4 betas for a double dot update.

And what did we gain with iOS 10.2.1 - what magical new feature. Ummm - Yeah - bug fixes and optimization are the name of the game for this update.  Oh and there are security improvements.

Officially from Apple there is mention of under the hood kernel improvements - and bugs that cause auto unlock to unlock when the Apple Watch is off the users wrist.

And well other bug fixes - all pretty yawn yawn.

Should you update today.  Well if today is around Jan 26th - wait a few days or better wait until Ep 420 comes out.  But so far I have not heard anything bad - and it does have security fixes - so if you have a work issued phone - you might want to jump on the update - for personal use - wait until Ep 420 - just to be safe.

    05:46

    http://www.zdnet.com/article/apple-release-ios-10-3-beta-

    includes-find-my-airpods-feature/

If you are a dev - Apple did release iOS 10.3 beta 1.  This was the one that was supposed to be released on Jan 10th. Missed it by two weeks.  Which is pretty bad as it was only predicted less than two weeks before the 10th.  Sunny Dickson missed on the date in that quote leak unquote  - and he missed in the features. As in there was no Theatre mode and popcorn icon.

Also there was not mention of one feature that is in iOS 10.3 beta 1 - and the biggest feature in the new beta - and that is find my AirPods.

What you will read - is that The AirPods are now included in Find My iPhone app - and people will mis-report that it lets you find them like the banned app - Find AirPods.  OH that is soooo wrong.  They do two different things - that combined actually make finding your AirPods really quick.  I showed my youngest son Porter how to use both apps - I hid one AirPod - and sent him on his way - Less than 60 seconds he found it using both apps.  Actually closer to 40 seconds.  Apple should let Find AirPods app back in - BOOOO.  Dev however said it will not happen.

Let me explain how they are different and can be used together.

The new AirPods in Find My iPhone - Apples App - will tell you where they are located - like they do for your iPhone and iPad - which is they show you them on the over head map - which basically lets you know they are in your house or somewhere else.  But that is as close as it gets you - not idea where in your house they are.  Are they in pants pockets or a jacket pocket or somewhere else. But what you can do is play a sound on the AirPods - this makes it really easy to find - once you get close.

That brings us back to Find AirPods App - it gets you close with a strength meter - and once you get close more than 3/4’s of the strength bar showing black - I told my son - then play the sound on the find my iPhone app.  He did that - was able to quickly get close enough that when he played the sound he could find them. And I even put them in between couch cushions.

So combined these two apps help - but sadly - Apple banned one part of this great combo.

Per the find my iPhone App - it will locate them if they are within bluetooth range of an iOS device using the same iCloud account. If there are none in range - say you left them at work - it will show you the last place they were when they connected to one of your iOS devices - same if the battery dies or closed in the case.

When you play a sound on the AirPods it almost sounds like Crickets chirping - which is a nice segway into our next new feature - you can now ask siri for Cricket scores and stats for the Indian Premier League and the international Cricket Council.

Some other new features - quote

Third-party payment app developers will be able to integrate Siri to pay and check the status of bills,

while ride-booking apps will be able to call on Siri to schedule a ride.

Apple's CarPlay feature for auto adds shortcuts to launch the last three used apps,

while Maps now displays EV charging stations.

3D Touch on the weather icon in Maps brings you hourly forecasts, chance of rain and daily high and low temperatures. unquote

But that is not all - the second best new feature for iOS 10.3 - is one that we had been waiting for - A Widget for the Podcast App.

To add this - tap on the home button when locked - then swipe from left to right - Then scroll down and find the edit button tap then - enter your passcode - and then scroll down - add the podcasts app widget and then scroll up and move the podcasts widget to the top of the screen.  So yes - that is a nice addition.

    Other new features are :

Safari now supports reduced motion preference in Web Apps.

CarPlay gains quick access to albums from songs in Music, new up Next screen

It is reported that 10.3 uses the new Apple File system (APFS) - which is better optimized for Solid state storage and should provide improved performance overall.  Will be interesting to see if it brings noticeable improvements to the older iOS devices running iOS 10

Another new option is under Settings - iTunes & App Store - there is a toggle on by default - called - in-App ratings and Reviews.  The description is

    Quote

help developers and other users know what you think by letting apps ask for product feedback.

    unquote

yeah remember where that toggle is - we will talk about this more later on.

Another place there are some changes - under Settings - Privacy  - there used to be an section called Diagnostics & Usage

That is now called Analytics - and there is now an option called Share iCloud analytics - that you can toggle on or off.

I went through most of the settings - I will do some more checking and see if any other new features were added - especially when we get to Beta 2.

    http://mashable.com/2017/01/25/ipad-hidden-keyboards-

    ios-10-3-beta/#PlgE9UNCxPqj

Devs started looking into the iOS 10.3 source code so that they could find something to report that would allow them to break their NDA with Apple.  And what they found this time - first is a floating keyboard that hovers above apps in a picture in picture sort of way.

This is not live - but hidden in the code - so it may never come to be - or may be active in iOS 10.3 beta 2.

This floating keyboard on the iPad is said to be able to be moved from one split screen to the other.  So I can see some advantages.  We shall see if it ever gets out of Alpha mode.

There is also another hidden keyboard that is a gestural keyboard

This one lets you swipe left or right on any key to delete or add a space.

These might not make it to iOS 10.3 - but maybe we see them with iOS 11 if they don’t - this could be the Apple Devs way of doing some advance testing / screening.

    http://appleinsider.com/articles/17/01/24/theater-mode-sirikit-

While Theater mode was a no show in iOS 10.3 beta 1 - Sorry Sunny - your quote source unquote  did not pan out.

There is some mentions of Theater mode in the notes for the next beta of the Watch OS - which is not yet available to devs.

So maybe there will be theater mode after all - just not for the iPhone right away.

In addition to iOS 10.3 beta 1 - apple also released on Jan 24th - tvOS 10.2 beta 1.

    From Apple

    Quote

    About tvOS 10.2 beta

tvOS 10.2 includes includes new features, bug fixes, and improvements in the OS and SDK including:

    – Accelerated Scrolling support for UIKit and TVMLKit apps – Device Enrollment Program support – Expanded Mobile Device Management support – Support for the VideoToolbox framework

    14:44

    https://9to5mac.com/2017/01/24/apple-will-let-developers-

    reply-to-reviews-in-the-app-store-soon-for-ios-and-mac-apps/

Apple announced it will soon let Developers reply to reviews on the iPhone, iPad and Mac App stores.  By the time 10.3 Gold Master makes it to customer - Apple says devs will be able to reply to reviews.

Developer feedback will be shown publicly on the Review pages for all customers to see.

This is nice in that if someone puts up a bogus review or unfair review or just a clueless review - Devs can now respond.  Luckily the number of times Bogus or unfair or clueless reviews are posted are so far and few between.  It is not like devs will be spending much time responding to said types of reviews.

If you are listening for the first time - that was my sarcasm voice.

FYI - Devs - responding - You’re an idiot - lets see you spend your entire weekend with no sleep coding for ungrateful SOB’s that don’t understand the value of the app they purchased.

Yeah - those responses will not help.

I wonder is apple will be screening the responses from Devs.

Keep it clean Devs - Apple does have bots that look for vulgarities.

Now Apple just needs to add that feature to the iTunes Podcast store.  It would be great to respond to those one star reviews - where people thought they were reviews iOS Today and not Today in iOS.

One of the other things Apple is allowing with iOS 10.3 - is the ability for Devs to do a system lever request for App reviews.

And hence why now there is that toggle I mentioned earlier where you can toggle off the ability for devs to bug your for an App review. If you just never do app reviews - and find devs are abusing this new found power - you can toggle on the kryptonite and turn off their supper power.

Again that was under Settings - iTunes & App Store - and scroll to the bottom - called - in-app ratings & reviews and by default it is turned on.

We are happy to have Away sponsoring us again.  To save $20 on the best luggage go to away travel dot com slash tii and use promo code tii

Away sent me their Carry on bag earlier last year and I as I said before I love it.  It has a 10,000 MAH battery pack built in.  That will charge an iPhone 6 or 7  Five times. The best part is you can be charging it as you are walking through the airport and waiting on line or even in the restroom.

I will be traveling again next week - kicking off a bunch of trips in the next 3 months.  And I am very great full to have my Away bag and the security of the battery back up.

But beyond the battery pack it is a great bag and meets my requirements -   wheels under all 4 corners and swivels 360 - making it easy to get down the isle and smooth flow in the airport. And it is double wheels under each corner.  Something I really like.  It is lightweight and very very durable and comes with a lifetime warranty - if anything breaks they will fix or replace it for you for LIFE.

AND there is a 100 day trial. If it is not for you then just return it for a full refund no questions asked. I love when a company stands behind their product like that.

The Away bag comes with a charging cord and comes in a really nice Laundry bag. And on the inside there is a bag for your shoes as well.   They really looked at all the details in making the best Carry on bag I have ever owned or seen.  Even the shipping box has nice Away Travel artwork on the inside.  Very very apple-ish.

In addition to the original carry on they just added a 2nd slightly larger carry on and they also have mid size and large check in bags.  But only the carry on bags have the battery pack. They come in 9 colors as well.  So there is definitely one to match your style.

To save $20 go to away travel dot com slash tii and use promo code tii .  Again away travel dot com slash tii and use promo code tii to save $20.  This will make a great post holiday present for yourself.

Here's an idea for the Apple dev team...Wouldn't it be nice if they could modify the algorithm used for Predictive Text functions so that they don't move a predicted word to a new location after you type one more letter? It's so frustrating when iOS predicts the word you're trying to spell while you're entering a letter. As you move your finger up to select that word, while your finger is in motion, it re-arranges the word choices and you end up selecting a completely different word!

    First world problems, I know...

Has anyone had any trouble after updating to iOS 10.2.1?

I updated my 6S and Series 1 Watch and have noticed nothing seriously out of the ordinary, except for the phone once not responding to the pause command while on Bluetooth.

    And finally Bob Berberick replied

    quote

No issues here: 6s plus, SE, 2 iPad Airs, 1 watch series 2

Francisco Tapia and Barbra E also reported nothing to report with regards to issues. And that is what I have to report - well actually I should say I updated an iPhone 6+ to 10.2.1 GM - and it is fine as well.  And when I had my iPad Pro and iPhone 7+ on Beta 4 - I did not see any issues with them either.

    airpods-disconnect-during-calls/

There are a reports in the Apple forum boards of AirPods disconnecting randomly during calls.

I can report having had this happen a few times where one or the other AirPod stops working.  The other keeps going.

Then I have to pull the one out of my ear that is not working and put it back in.  A couple of times that did not work - and I re-cased it and then reinserted to get it to work.

Some are saying they only have this issue when also having an Apple Watch paired.  I will have to see if the issue goes away next time if I just take off my Apple Watch.

Also what is interesting - is the reports are this only happens when on a phone call - listening to Music or Podcasts - no issues - talking on the phone - hit or miss.

The other thing that is reported this only seems to happen when using both AirPods at the same time.

Which is normally how I do calls.  well until I hear the low power chime - then I re-case one and keep talking on the other until it gets down from 10% to 5%.

In the time it takes the one in use to go from 10% to 5% - the other one charging is typically in the 65 to 70% range on the charge - then I swap them out.

So just about 1/3rd of the way into the Q1 - Apple is now at a point where is you want an iPhone 7 or 7+ it should be available for you right away.

Will be interesting to see what Tim says about that on the call next week.

more reports - this time from the Wall Street Journal - about 3 new iPhones in 2017.  An iPhone 7S and 7S+ at 4.7 and 5.5 inches - and then an iPhone 8 with a wrap around 5.8 inch OLED screen.

This report is saying that the earpiece, FaceTime camera and touch ID will all be embedded into the OLED display - so the entire front of the phone will be screen - no bezel.

    iphone-face-recognition-biometrics/

Sticking with iPhone 8 rumors - Ming-Chi Kuo - is reporting that Apple will skip over the touch ID sensor and instead go with several new biometric sensors.

This includes a new Optical finger print sensor as well as facial recognition sensors.

Ming-Chi also see OLED screens in the iPhone 8’s future.

However they say the Optical sensor needed for this to work is still in early development and is likely not going to be available this year for mass market.  So not saying there will be no iPhone 8 - just that the facial recognition and new optical finger print sensor are more likely a 2018 or later feature.

CNET put out an article already titled - Everything we know so far about the iPhone 8.

Guess they heard my episode going over things.

Here is what CNET pulled together.

the iPhone 8 will have the A10X or A11 processor.

It will have a ceramic or glass body

It will have wireless charging - see previous item.

The display will extend edge to edge

It will have either virtual home button or no home button.

    Enhanced water resistance.

Dual lens camera enable AR capabilities.

Support for Apple Pencil - seems that was thrown in to make the list longer.

And an Iris Scanner as alternative to Touch ID.

We can add from earlier reports - maybe a combo of Touch ID and facial recognition.

    of-new-ipads-may-not-launch-until-second-half-of-2017

On the last episode - with regards to the rumor of a 10.5 or 10.something new iPad Pro and for it to be released Q1 or Q2 - I said

    quote

So far I have not seen any quote leaked unquote photos of the 10 point something size iPad with edge to edge screen.  This makes me very very skeptical of these rumors.

    unquote

Well guess what - a new Rumor over on Apple insider - which says now the new iPads will not launch until second half of 2017.

Shocker - expect the bar to move some more on these iPad rumors.

Ok this next one is an interesting one.  There is a Research company slash group of short sellers - that put out a report about Energous - we mentioned them previously as possibly offering their charging tech to Apple.

Well the Short siders - called Copperfield Research - they claim that by looking at bunch of Apple Patents that they do not believe Apple will be using Energous’s technology - but rather Apples own home grown tech.

They show a bunch of Apple patents and diagrams from Apple patents to back up their claim - Apple is passing on Energous.  But two things to note.

One Copperfield Research is made up not just short siders - but anonymous researchers - and two - Apple Patents as I have said before - indicate either what is already released or that which will never be released.  Rarely if ever does it indicate future products to be released.

The ticker symbol for Energous is WATT - it is a stock to watch - as if the short siders drive it down some more - it may be a buying opportunity.  Already it is down more than 22% since this report was published.

It is currently trading at 14.50 - but I should point out a year ago it was at 4.50.  So lots of room to fall as well.

Just when I see short sellers using Apple Patents already released to make a point - I see an opportunity for investing. In full disclosure - I have not yet taken a position on WATT - but I am thinking of doing so.

This next one I had to role my eyes on

It is titled - Apple working on Enhanced Siri Capabilities for next-generation iPhones.

YOU THINK.  That same rumor has been out every year since Siri was released.

I will not get into details - other than to say No duh - of course Apple is working on improving siri on the next iPhone and the one after that and so on.

    galaxy-note-7-recall-reason-report

Samsung issued a report on why the Galaxy Note 7’s exploded.

They blamed bad batteries and rushed manufacturing.  But really those were by products of the real issue - Samsung tried to shorten the design and production window to beat Apple out the gate with the Note 7.  That ultimately lead to a series of errors - that missed the issue of the batteries in early testing.

Trying to react to their competitor ultimately doomed the Note 7.

They will be talking about this in MBA classes for years and years to come.

A blind pod caster  from Australia has produced a detailed podcast about how the AirPods work with voice-over and a number of Apple devices.

    HI Rob,

Yesterday, I purchased my Apple Air Pods and I would like to share my thoughts on them.

    So here goes!

    Appearance

Looks futuristic and I had gotten some interesting comments on my Facebook post. But that's to be expected. Give it another 3-6 months, that unique style will be a driving reason for people wanting these as gifts or plunk down the cash to get a pair.

Weight, fitting and staying in ear

These are so light.  Without a cord pulling them down or out, they stayed in my ears. Sometimes I did feel the need to push them back in but I like my buds to be in there right.  Even when they are more loose, no worries about them falling out or jiggling away.  If you can wear the ear pods comfortably then your ears are ready for the Air Pods.

    Battery life

As expected, I got 5-6 hours on a charge and at least 4 charges from the case.

    Microphones

I will agree that the audio isn't that great coming from the mics, however I did use them to make calls and they came out great.  People forget that physics does not allow full range sound coming from such small mics as these.

Pairing them with my iPhone 7 Plus

The initial paring was a breeze.  I describe it as a meeting of 2 best buds, it was that fast.

    Range in signal

Wow!  Was able to walk through my whole house of 1500 square feet without as much as a single glitch.

    The sound quality

Just amazing.  When paired with other Bluetooth devices, these ear buds sound fantastic.  However when paired with the iPhone 7 or 7 Plus, the true potential of these Air Pods is released. The bass was quite substantial and the treble was crystal clear.  The best sounding ear bud I ever have tried out.

    Other thoughts

Over the past 3-4 months, I have read or listened to one review after another and I can say that the vast majority reviewers out there are full of IT.  Clearly, they either don't know what good sound is or are just outright biased.

So what do I know about sound to make such claims?

I am a professional Disc Jockey, I get many compliments about how good my sound system sounds.  Many times, it's the best they have ever heard.  Sound that good doesn't just come by accident.  I also do some live sound as well.

And at the risk of reinforcing stereotypes, I am visually impaired.  Need I say more on that topic?

To sum it up. I Know my sound and these Air Pods are awesome.  They are worth the $159 USD.

    Shane

    2-jailbreak-ios-10-2-jailbreak-update-saving-shsh2-blobs.htm

    Hi Rob,

You rarely talk of jail breaking these days. Please give your thoughts on jailbreaking in general these days and in particular, on this article about jailbreaking iOS 10.2.

Thanks for all you do to help us get the most from our iOS devices.

    Dr. John M

Hi Dr. John - not much to report - the iOS 10.2 Jailbreak is not yet available.

You can jailbreak up to 10.1.1

And the latest news about the 10.2 jailbreak is about needing save the blobs.  I have said it before - if a jailbreak will not work for an out of the box iPhone running the latest version of iOS - then it is not a viable solution.  When it requires you to save blobs before updating.  Yeah - not high on my list and not something I will recommend.

Untethered - and out of the box - latest version of iOS need to be the situation to call it a good jailbreak.

I also don’t talk much about jailbreaking - as the need for it has greatly declined in recent years. At least for no power users.

In the old days I could justify a jailbreak for almost any user - you would be hard pressed to justify it for more than a small percentage of users today.

Tell me why I am wrong - if you are still jailbreaking - tell me the reasons why - tell me why My wife or mom should jailbreak.

    Hi Rob

No search of Google has revealed a viable or sensible answer to this frustrating problem:

I use the Notes app A LOT, more than any other, for making rough bus timetables or schedules as part of my job.  This involves a lot of numbers side by side but the app insists on turning them into hyperlinks.  Every time I go to edit a note, it scrolls to the top and hyperlinks almost everything.

Surely after 10 years Apple have provided a facility to give an option to turn this off, but I can't find it.

    Help!!

    Best wishes,

    Alf, Sheffield UK

Hi Rob I'm the proud owner of an iPhone 6 Plus recently I managed to get my hands on an iPhone 6s for very cheap but now I'd like to unlock it from its original carrier I see that there are a lot of options online and wonder number one can I do it myself and number two is there anybody better to do it then the carrier who actually charges $50

    Steve

    Hi Steve,

I would first suggest contacting the company you want to sign up with and use the iPhone on their network.

See what their advice is.  Depending on the state of the phone - there are multiple paths you can take to get it working.

If you go back to the original carrier to start with - you may find you ask for the wrong type of help.

Your new carrier will have the most incentive to give you the right advice.

That all said - if someone listening is looking to unlock their own phone they had from day one - then yes in that case absolutely go to the original carrier and ask for an unlock.

    Rob W

    Hi Rob,

It's been a while since I've reached out, but wanted to tell you that my collection now includes a new 21.5 iMac, upgraded to 9.7" iPad Pro, and now a series 1 space gray Apple Watch.  What a combination.

The ability to unlock the iMac with the watch is awesome. Now, I'm just learning the watch, but there is definitely a place for it in my space.  The best part is that my wife, who used to mock my desire to have one, saw mine for 5 minutes and decided to take the one I bought and sent me back for another of my own.

Still love the show and yes... there isn't much to put in the show, but thanks for all you do.  You have helped educate me into expanding my presence in the ecosystem in an educated manner.  That sir is truly appreciated!

Welcome to the show I am your host Rob and this is the Today in iOS podcast -

Sorry no music for this episode.  I am all out of music created on an iOS device.

I want to thank JOHN for sending in the Artwork for today's show.  JOHN wrote the following:

    Hi, Rob.

    Happy New Years, Rob.

This is an original photo of a winter sunset on the campus of UBC (University of British Columbia, Vancouver Canada) I took in Dec 2016 and added the logo/text using snapseed.

“Google glasses may look and seem absurd now but (Brian) Sozzi says they are “a product that is going to set the stage for many other interesting products.” For the moment, at least, the same cannot be said of iPhones or iPads. unquote

Jeff Macke, Yahoo! Breakout, 27 February 2013

Ouch - head spinning and about to explode with that level of complete wrongness in that quote.

If you remember back to Ep 416 - I mentioned a rumor from Sonny Dickson.  He is known for getting Mechanical samples smuggled out of Apple production houses.  Well he took his try on a rumor about Software and said iOS 10.3 beta would be released on Jan 10th - I was skeptical - and well the 10th came and went - and a week later - still no iOS 10.3 Beta.

But there was on Jan 9th iOS 10.2.1 Beta 3 and on Jan 12th - iOS 10.2.1 Beta 4.

Sonny - Stick with the hardware rumors - just sayin.

So what does iOS 10.2.1 beta 3 and beta 4 bring us - well exactly what we would expect - Bug fixes and optimization.

No new features I could find or see mentioned in any articles.

It is interesting to see Apple continue with the multi-beta releases in a week.  Something they never did prior to iOS 10 - they now seem to be doing regularly.

If you are a dev or beta tester - as of Monday the 16th of Jan these are the beta’s available for you:

    iOS 10.2.1 Beta 4 - released Jan 12th

    Watch OS 3.1.3 Beta 2 - released Jan 9th.

    tvOS 10.1.1 Beta 2 - Released Jan 9th.

But nope - no iOS 10.3 beta 1

    finder_for_airpods_has_been_removed_from_the/

On the last episode near the end I talk briefly about an app called Finder for AirPods.

The app is supposed to help you find a lost AirPod - the dev sent me a promo code for the app - and I downloaded it but had not had a chance to test it out prior to recording the last episode - well right after the last episode came out - the App got yanked from the app store.  I was skeptical at best of the app being able to work - and evidently Apple felt there was an issue.

I had said on the show - I would hide an AirPod in my house and see if I could get my kids to find it.

After it was yanked - I figured not much use in testing - but what the heck - I will test it and be able to validate that the app was bogus and did not work and Apple did the right thing by yanking it.  Yes - I am coming from a biased or highly skeptical point of view.

I took one AirPod - and placed it in an impossible to see location walking around.  I then gave the iPhone to my 10 year old son Henry - and said Ok - the AirPod is somewhere on the first level of the house - they had 5 rooms it could have been in - I then said go find it with this app.  I explained that the level bar shows how much signal there is - and the more of the level bar the closer you are.

I sent him on his way.  I fully expected him to be at least 15 to 20 minutes before he gave up - giving me some time to catch up on emails - Not that I thought I was sending him on a wild goose chase or anything.  3 minutes later he found it.

I was surprised - especially where I had placed it - no way to find it with out the app in that amount of time.

I then re-hid it - and gave the iPhone to my Wife - told her what I told Henry - and off she went - and Less than 3 minutes later she found it as well.  My wife is sooooo un-techie - if she could find it - anyone could find it.  No offense honey.

    To the dev - Kudos.

Now the app is not perfect - it will not find the AirPods in the Case - so if you loose both and the case -or just the case - you are SOL.

But if you loose one of the AirPods - you place it down or it falls in the cushions of a chair or sofa or more likely - you leave it in your coat or pants pocket - this app does - or should I say did actually work.

Sadly - Apple has removed it from the App store.

The App again is Finder for AirPods - and is currently not in the App store.

I have an email into the Dev asking for an update on the Apps status - And he replied and said - Quote Unfortunately the app will not be returning back in the App Store with no chance of it being approved again. unquote

Anyone from Apple listening - Booooo - put the app back.

If you are one of the lucky ones that downloaded it - kudos to you.  Hold on to it and don’t delete it.  Again not perfect - but actually useful.

    might-have-a-use-after-all/

When the 4th gen Apple TV came out there were two versions 32GB and 64 GB - I said at the time - GET THE 64 GB - I received a little flack from a few saying it was a waste of money - no need for the higher storage.

Well - Apple just changed things - before where apps for Apple TV were limited to just 200 MB - Apple will now allow for apps up to a new limit of 4GB.  Or you know just 8 of those app for the 32 GB unit vs 16 for the 64 GB version.

Ok - Granted most and almost none will be at the 4GB size - but eventually some will start pushing up that high - and really - it will not take many multi GB apps to fill up your device - at least with the 64 GB version it will take twice as many.

So for all those that purchased the 64 GB versions - you can now rest assured you purchased the right version for the future.

The biggest benefit of these app size changes will be in the speed of the App UI - currently with the 200 MB limit - it required the app to download extra elements if they wanted to offer more of an immersive experience.  Some of those downloads took quite a bit of time depending on their size and your connection speed.  I had a couple I just quit playing altogether as it was not worth the wait - now - they will be able to bundle that all together in the app - and no more delays waiting for assets to download - assuming they can fit it all in 4GB.  If not - then You can host up to 20GB of additional content on the App store for download as needed.  But at least you now get 3.8 GB more downloaded in the app to start with.

Easy prediction here - Next Gen Apple TV’s with 128 GB of storage and maybe even 256 GB of storage.  Coming this fall.

    was-working-on-airpods-since-at-least-2015-patent-filing-shows

This next story backs up what I have said for years.  When ever you see an Apple Patent story for something Apple has not released - chances are they will not be releasing it.  Because this next one is about a patent filing from Apple from June 2015 that was just released and you know what it was - it was the Apple AirPods and Case.

This is for Apples Application for quote wireless audio output devices  unquote and it describes how two untethered AirPods communicate with each other, their carrying case and the device supplying the audio content - such as an iPhone or Apple Watch.

The diagrams from two years are go - are spot on the AirPods and case.  And again it goes back to show when Apple is going to release a product it patents - it waits until it is released for the patents to come out.

Keep that in mind every time you see a story about a folding iPhone is coming because Apple has a patent for one.

The interesting thing to me - was how spot on the details in the patent application were to the finished product.  Again take rumors about unreleased apple product based on Patents with a huge huge grain of salt.

    12:44

    https://9to5mac.com/2017/01/11/ios-market-share-kantar/

Speaking of taking things with a huge grain of salt - Kantar Has some data on Market share for Smartphones - for the 3 months ending November last year.  I say take this with a huge grain of salt - because Apple has yet to release numbers for last quarter which includes October and November - 2 of the 3 months for this report.

So what did Kantar find or report to have found.

Well year over year - iOS went from 37.1% to 43.5% of market share.  Windows Phone dropped from 2.3 to 0.8% - and Android dropped from 60.4% to 55.3%.

Kantar looked at 10 different markets.  In 8 of the 10 iOS devices increased Market share from the year before.  Only in China and Germany did their Market share go down.  In China it was the biggest drop from 25.3% for Sep to Nov 2015 to 19.9% for the same period in 2016.

The Markets iOS went up were - UK, France, Italy, Spain, US, Australia, Japan and EU5.

The biggest increase was in the UK going from 39.2% to 48.3%

Windows Phone had a decline in 9 of the 10 markets - only in Japan where it went from 0.3 to 0.4% was there any increase.  Its biggest drop was in the UK where it dropped from 9.1% to 2.1%

From Kantar was this interesting quote.

iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPhone 6s were the three most popular smartphones in the US at the beginning of the holiday period, for a combined 31.3% share. The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge were the fourth and fifth best-selling phones in the US, with Samsung capturing 28.9% of smartphone sales.

Obviously if the Note 7 had not gone up in flames - it does look like Samsung would have out paced Apple in the US market.  Either that or those that were going to get a Note 7 - just goes the S7 or S7 edge instead.

In any case - these are all just numbers guessed at by Kantar.

    http://www.macrumors.com/2017/01/11/

    airpods-slice-intelligence-data/

And speaking of Guessed out numbers - here is a new set of data.

This data was guessed at by Slice and has to do with the Wireless Headphone Market - Yes someone tracks that.

And here is what Slice found - In December in the US - an estimated 75% of revenue from Headphones sold online came from Wireless models - up from 50% in December 2015.

Apples AirPods are estimated to have captured 26% share of the online Revenue.  Because you know - Apple reports thats directly to Slice. Or not.

The AirPods stole the top spot from Beats - but don’t feel sorry for Beats - remember they are owned by Apple.  I am saying that to myself - I keep forgetting that.

Beats had 15.4% of the revenue for Dec 2016 down from 24.1% in December 2015.

Combined Apple had 41.4% of the revenue for Wireless headphones.

Slice said their research shows that 85% of those purchasing AirPods were male - see ep 417 and my wife’s comments on what she thinks of my AirPods.

As always remember - Slice gets their data by looking at email receipts from up to 353,000 US online shoppers - And Apple gets their data from actual sales.

It will be interesting if Apple gives any real numbers on AirPods in their quarterly call - AirPods will fall under their hodge podge category - lumped in with Apple Watches and accessories and Beats and Apple Pens and Dongles - lots and lots of dongles.

    Hi Rob,

Since someone asked on the last show and since I couldn't wait when the game came...Here's the situation on sharing Mario Run below, essentially you can't share in-app purchases with family sharing (see link Apple sent below). It sounds like if you're sharing the same Apple ID then having Mario Run on multiple devices won't be a problem.

Please allow me to explain why you were charged for the same item. I would like to share with you that In-App purchases are not shareable in Family Sharing. You can share the main application to your family members but not the contents inside the application. We are going to get a little soap boxy here for the next few minutes.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode was from Myron Uecker who wrote the following in reference to an article titled - Apple’s Activation Lock is Bogus :

    quote

This person is an idiot! Activation Lock was one of Apple's better additions to iOS because it greatly reduces the value of a stolen device. It could be improved, but mainly in the form of helping police track down stolen devices by requiring the passcode to power off a device, or allowing the device to connect to any available hotspot or wireless network to share its location.

Just because a few people sold a device and forgot to unlock it, or a few people forgot their pass codes, doesn't justify removing a feature that protects your data and reduces the value of your stolen device. I got a phone back a year after it was stolen because the thief couldn't use it.

This article Myron referenced is not just bad it is irresponsible. The author basically tries to say Activation lock is a conspiracy by Apple to make more money.

    Apple Dystopia  replied

    quote

I'm actually in the process of writing an article about Activation Lock. It can be bypassed, but not everyone can do it. There are services that do it for $150. That said, it has dramatically reduced iPhone theft. After all, thieves are losing $150 in resale value if they unlock it, and they could be caught in the process. Specifically, my article focuses on how to verify that a used iPhone isn't stolen.

In the first year of Activation Lock, it reduced iPhone theft in NYC by 25%, SF by 40% and London by 50%. It's not just theft. People get beaten, and even murdered over their iPhone. It has literally saved lives.

It's really poorly written too. The author is a multi-faceted idiot..

    unquote

I put this in his comments :

    Quote

"Claiming that Activation lock is is Disingenous - shows a complete lack of understanding of the History of the iPhone and the issue of "Apple Picking" - and the calls of Police Chief's calling on Apple - Begging Apple to implement Activation Lock. Prior to Activation lock - Crime in NY City had rissen almost exclusively due to "Apple Picking". This article completely ignores history and the realities of the world. People actually died getting mugged for their iPhones. Those stories are history. Do the responsible thing - and delete this article. Rob - Host of the Today in iOS Podcast"

    unquote

The author of that article replied to me and said

    quote

Rob, respectfully, you're wrong. Those of us in affluent countries can't see the forest for the trees (more on that later). While the statistics may show (something like 19% in the first year) that activation lock caused a drop in iPhone theft, it does not stop theft of all Apple devices mainly because they're status symbols. 19% is a drop in the bucket. But, do you know how many devices are out there, bricked but not stolen or otherwise illicit? No, you probably don't (if that data out there, I'd like to know). I'm highlighting a problem I think few talk about and - again - in rich countries, ever see. Apple knows though, their massive profit says so.

    unquote

I love that he Chides me for not knowing how many Bricked devices are out there - and then says he love to know that answer too.  That is like him saying - Your so dumb you don’t even know the answer to Hilbert’s 15th or 16th problems.

    I replied back

    quote

Kevin Costain You are respectively not just wrong your are being irresponsible with your article. According to Reuters iPhone theft dropped 50% in London, 40% in San Francisco, 25% in New York City. That based on the 12 months following the introduction of Activation lock with iOS 7. Your argument about sellers "Forgetting" about activation lock is laughable at best. The data shows that theft of iPhones has been greatly reduced thanks in large part to Activation lock. No longer do you need to hide your iPhone in public in most cities. Kids are not getting dragged to their death or people pushed down stairs to their death as robbers try to abscond with their iPhones. Your article basically is saying - it sucks to buy a stollen iPhone on the grey market - yes - in that case I agree - but maybe buyers need to make sure the device is one they can activate prior to paying the money - or set up a 3rd party to hold the money to resolve any disputes. But to Say Activation lock is a conspiracy by Apple to make more money - I am sorry but respectfully - you need to take down this article. That is just crazy talk. Plus Government regulations around the world now require Activation lock or kill switches. So No - Apple will never remove Activation lock - NOR SHOULD THEY.

    10th-anniversary-iphone/

Since the last Episode - The iPhone had its 10th anniversary - sorta - It was the 10th Anniversary of when Steve Jobs was up on Stage at Mac World Jan 9th 2007 - and introduced the iPhone to the world.  The Real 10 year anniversary will be the end of June - when it actually made it to our hands.

There were a lot of articles talking about how the iPhone changed the world in the last 10 years - but sadly the biggest change the iPhone introduced - And I only say Sadly - because it was needed then and is still an issue for some - was where Apple introduced a device not touched by the carrier.  It was the first time a smartphone was introduced that the UI was not influenced or controlled by the Carrier.  That was the big thing - that and the touch interface.

Today sadly - many smartphones still have carrier bloatware - but not iPhones.

If you want a fun listen - go back and listen to the early episode of what was then Today in iPhone - Those episodes from April 2007 to June 2007 - prior to the iPhone launching.  While not everyone was convinced the iPhone would succeed - I think you will see one podcast host and a bunch of listeners in those early days that were pretty convinced of its success.  You will also hear me that spring and summer of 2007 - calling for Apple to allow for native apps.

$60 Billion dollars to devs later - I think that was the right call.

Of course Tim Cook does not really want to look back as much as look forward - he states the best is yet to come. Well actually Tim Cook said quote

“iPhone is an essential part of our customers’ lives, and today more than ever it is redefining the way we communicate, entertain, work and live, iPhone set the standard for mobile computing in its first decade and we are just getting started. The best is yet to come.”

The new size would be 10.5” and would be edge to edge.  Those reporting this rumor - say it makes sense - because if you go to this size and use the same amount of pixels - the pixel density works out to what the pixel density of the iPad Mini is.

It seems multiple rumors are out there about the next iPad Pro being in that 10.1 to 10.9 range.  This to go along with an updated 12.9 Inch iPad Pro.

And yes - there would still be a 9.7 iPad Air.

Rumors are still pointing to a Q2 revamp of the iPad Line.

They are saying the 12.9 and 10. something designs would have the A10X chip - while the 9.7 iPad air would have the A9 chip.

So far I have not seen any quote leaked unquote photos of the 10 point something size iPad with edge to edge screen.  This makes me very very skeptical of these rumors.

on the iPhone next gen front - there were a bunch of reports out about the bezel of the next iPhone - those reports go back to Digitimes - and hence no link is included - as Digitimes rumors that start with digitizes are pretty much always wrong.

    http://loupventures.com/our-expectations-for-iphone-x/

Speaking of almost always wrong - there is Uncle Gene Munster - who just came out with a whole months worth of how wrong were they predictions.

He has this to say about the next iPhone.

    quote

A word on the name: We expect the next iPhone to have a new design. Apple will likely break from it’s historical naming convention and call this iPhone something other than iPhone 7S or iPhone 8 because it will be the 10th anniversary iPhone. Like they did with the 10th version of the Mac OS, it seems logical that they’ll call the next iPhone: iPhone X.

We expect iPhone X to feature:

    • - An OLED screen
    • - Wireless charging (a step they’ve already taken with Apple Watch)
    • - Dual lens camera systems on both the smaller- and larger-screen models
    • - A (possibly dedicated) processor capable of 3D modeling and real-time 3D image processing
    • - More sophisticated proximity sensors
    • - The iPhone X may be the iPhone model we’ve discussed that removes the home button, using haptic feed back for button presses on the display itself for home button functions. This would enable an edge-to-edge display for an iPhone without a bezel.

With iPhone X, we see Apple doubling down on AR and extending it’s lead among AR-capable devices.

    unquote

Some of these rumors / many - we covered on the last episode.

But Uncle Gene seems to have moved his past obsession with a full size Apple TV - to an Apple AR solution.

I have heard the iPhone X rumor before - I think People think Apple is more obsessed with numbers than they are.  I don’t see them skipping iPhone 8 and iPhone 9.  I really don’t even see them skipping iPhone 7S and 7S+ at this point.

    Hi Rob,

Love your podcast. Do you have instructions on how to play an episode from the watch and leave the phone behind.

    Thank you,

    George

    Hey Rob, long time listener...

Question: I'm pretty sure you've mentioned that I can download one of your podcasts to my iPhone, which, in turn, appears to copy it to my Apple Watch 2. So I wanted to try to listen to a podcast independently from my iPhone, like taking a walk while leaving the phone at home. Except, I can't for the life of me figure out how to play it directly off the watch. It seems I can't make the watch the source of the podcast. Do you have a link you can send me on the how to?  By the way, I'm loving my new wireless earbuds, they work great!

    Regards,

    Steve

    San Pedro, Ca.

    Hi George and Steve,

I have been remiss in explaining this before.

First you need to download the episode on the phone.

Once that is done, go to the detail page for the episode.  On the detail page, there should be a watch icon within the download button.  Press the watch icon in the download button to upload the downloaded episode to the watch.  This can take some time to transfer, I found that the transfer happens quicker if the watch is charging. Also you need to tap exactly on the Watch iCon - if you miss it will ask if you want to delete the downloaded file.

Once the file has transferred to the watch (the watch icon will show as a solid black icon), you can play the episode on the watch by doing a force press and selecting "Change Playlist" and choose the "Watch Playback" list.  The watch will now show all episodes that have been uploaded to the watch and can be played without the phone.

Thanks for listening to the show

    Rob W

    Hi Rob,

Hmm, this is interesting.  Just iMessaged a friend about the movie Rogue One.  After I sent the message, I saw the words Rogue One were underlined.  Tapping on the "link" brought up info on the movie.  I didn't know iMessage would do that!

BTW, thanks for "airing" my piece about using generic shopping baspgs instead of Apple s"patented" bags.

    Regards,

    Steven

For kickstarter this week we have a project called - AirHooks.

Quote - A simple way to secure your Apple AirPods in your ears. No Strings needed.

These are reverse hooks with a place to put your AirPods through.

I am going to say this - my AirPods have not fallen out.  Every single time they have come out of my ears it was because I was pulling them out.  Not one time have they fallen out.

That said - if you are really worried about this - then check out the AirHooks kickstarter project.

You have about 20 days to back this.  Pricing on this one is about $18 for one set.

They say this will ship in March 2017 - but only if they hit their goal of $12,000 - of which they have raised $86 dollars so far - not $86k - just $86 dollars as in 4 Twenty dollar bills - and 3 two dollar bills.

Search for AirHooks in Kickstarter dot com or in the show notes in Ep 418 at today in iOS dot com.

    • Polycarbonate (PC) / Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) construction keeps the charging case scratch-free in everyday use
    • Features a Nanotac™ base to ensure a non-slip experience
    • Patent Pending

Or you know you could just plug in your lightening cable to them.

Actually $12 is not a bad price at all - and it looks nice.

    Hi, Rob.

Earlier this week I arrived home from work just before sunset to see a rainbow glowing in the southeastern sky. It was quite a surprise because no rain had fallen where I stood.

I snapped a few photos with my iPhone 6s, and I cropped and edited this one with the Snapseed app before using the Over app to apply the text.

    Regards,

    Lawrence.

Thanks LAWRENCE, for sending in this artwork and folks you can see LAWRENCE'S artwork in the FREE Tii App via the BONUS button for ep 417 - or at instagram.com/todayinios and also as a stand alone post in the VIP section and at Facebook.com/todayinios.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote -- quote

“After more than two years, Windows Phone still claims less than 3% of market share. BlackBerry 10 will be launching here in the US soon and I think they will increase their share to 3rd place and may even pass iOS in a couple years.

As I hear more and more people say they are bored with iOS, there is an opportunity for someone to come in and fire up the market again.” unquote

Matthew Miller, ZDNet, 14 February 2013

Ummm - No.  Not even close.  It really is amazing just 4 years ago there were people delusional about both Blackberry and iOS.  Ok - may not so amazing on that later one - Some people are just haters on anything Apple - especially those over at ZDNet which for some reason seem to act like Steve Jobs and Tim Cook had drowned their puppies back in the day.

This week we have promo codes for The App - Mail2Widget - one word - with 2 being a number not a word - here is his written Review from the Dev:

My original goal for this episode was to record it all using my AirPods.  However the best laid plans of mice and men often run astray when Garageband does not support recording from AirPods.  I updated my Mac to Sierra so I could do this - but sadly Garageband just will not let it be.  That said - if you listen to Ep 87 of The Feed podcast - I did that entire episode using my AirPods over Skype - with Elsie my Co-host recording on her side.  So if you want to hear the AirPods in action over Skype and learn more about podcasting - check out The Feed and Ep 87 to be specific.  Link in the show notes to the feed dot libsyn dot com

I will keep trying to get the AirPods to work with GarageBand for a future episode - but it might mean there needs to be an update to Garageband to support them.  If anyone out there using GarageBand was able to record from AirPods - let me know what you did.

    http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2017/01/05App-Store-

    Shatters-Records-on-New-Years-Day.html

Apple reported a pretty good year for app sales in 2016.  App developers earned $20 Billion with a B dollars in 2016 alone.  That is up 40% from 2015.  And since 2008 - App devs have earned over $60 Billion with a B dollars.

Per the most downloaded app of 2016 - well No surprise here -  it was yup you guessed it -  Pokemon Go.   However Super Mario Run was also among the top 10 most downloads apps for 2016 which is amazing as it was only available for less than 1 month.

There were 2.2 Million apps available in the App store at the end of 2016 - and that is after Apple started purging quite a few un-updated and dead apps.  That 2.2 Million was up over 20% from the end of 2015 - but likely if you take the dead apps into account the growth was even higher.

Apple also announced that New Years Day 2017 was the single busiest day ever on the App store with nearly $240 Million in Purchases on that one day alone.

Apple Senior VP of World Wide Marketing - Phil the thrill Schiller had this to say

    quote

“2016 was a record-shattering year for the App Store, generating $20 billion for developers, and 2017 is off to a great start with Jan. 1 as the single biggest day ever on the App Store, We want to thank our entire developer community for the many innovative apps they have created — which together with our products — help to truly enrich people’s lives.”

    unquote

The App store from Apple has helped create 1000’s and 1000’s of great jobs all around the world.  And clearly with over $20 Billion paid out last year - it has helped change many a devs lives.  No writing an app is not a ticket to instant riches - and there is no such thing as a sure hit - excluding Supper Mario Run.  But it is great to know Apple has created this marketplace where Devs do have the opportunity to get paid for their apps and they don’t have to rely on annoying get in the way of the apps functionality ads.

    09:14

    http://www.apple.com/investor/earnings-call/

Apple also announced this week - the date of their next quarterly call - and that will be Jan 31st at 5:00 PM ET.

I have said for a while - this will be the quarterly call that is important for Apple.  It will go over how many iPhones and iPads apple sold in the holiday quarter.  It will determine the price trajectory for 2017.

There are a lot of estimates on where iPhone sales fell - with some rumors saying they were lower than last year and others saying Apple is back on the positive Year over Year growth trend one again.

I think iPhone sales will be higher than the year ago quarter.  I think iPad sales will not be.  Lack of anything new and well the iPad life cycle is just much longer than the iPhones.  I would say closer to 5 years for an iPad before you feel you need to change it out.  That said - My Parents still use their first gen iPad every day.  And my kids still use ours as well.  So 5 years may be conservative - as the original iPad launched April 3rd 2010 - almost 7 years ago.

Per the financials that will be announced - there was a report that Apple cut Tim cooks salary by 15% along with cuts to others at the top of the Apple food chain.

To be precise - Tim Cooks cut was really that he received just 89.5% of his target bonuses.  This means in 2016 Tim cook only made $8.7 million vs 10.3 Million in 2015.  Man times are tight for Tim these days.  But before you feel too bad for Tim - remember - he has been CEO for 5 years and that means some of his shares vested - as in 1.3 Million shares which is worth about $136 Million.  Ok so maybe things are not so tight at the Tim Cook estate.

So should be an interesting call on Jan 31st well if any of the analysts dare ask him about the cut in pay that is.

    https://9to5mac.com/2017/01/07/9to5mac-

    best-of-ces-2017-awards/

This is one of the first CES’s I can remember in a long time - where Apple did not announce something or leak something that took the wind out of the CES sails.  I kept waiting this week for some new - any news with regards to Apple that was clearly meant to upstage CES.  Nada - Nothing - Zip.

So with that said - there were a lot of products / accessories for the iOS ecosystem that were announced or shown off at CES this year.  Here are just a few of the new products announced this year.

Top of the list is the iLX-107 which from the name you can easily tell is a Wireless CarPlay receiver from Alpine.  It comes with an iPad Pro-ish sticker price of $900 - which is actually much cheaper than the sticker price of a new car.

The iLX-107 is quote an aftermarket in-dash receiver dedicated to wireless Apple CarPlay

unquote according to Alpine.  The iLX-107 is an AM/FM receiver that has a 7 inch touch display.

Because it is wireless CarPlay - there is no need to take your iPhone out of your pocket or purse to connect.  This will be available in February in North America.

One of the more unique accessories and one I will not have a need for is the Withings Hair Coach - it is a smart Hair brush designed to prevent hair damage.  A built in microphone listens to the sound of you brushing your hair to identify specific sounds along with the accelerometer and Gyroscope to give haptic feedback to let you know if you are brushing wrong. The info is also sent via bluetooth or wifi to their companion app.  It will be released this fall and sell for $200.  I am sure there is a lot more it can do. That said - they lost my interest back when I lost my hair.

For those not folicly challenged - I have a link in the show notes.

The D-Link - OMNA 180 CAM HD - was also announced - It is a remote nanny or security cam for your home.

The OMNA 180 offers the following key specs:

    • Apple HomeKit Compatibility

    • 180 Degree Field of View

    • HD 1080p Resolution

    • 128 GB Capacity microSD Card Slot

    • 2-Way Audio

    • Motion Detection

And it can see in the dark up to 16 feet with its night vision.

It is slated to launch the first quarter of 2017 - pricing is not given but other similar devices from D-Link run $150 to $200

Link in the show notes for this as well.

And for those of you with an apple watch - that your work out does not allow for the wearing of said watch on your wrist - say like if you are doing boxing - which was their example - where the gloves get in the way - but also if you play pick up basket ball - where having the watch - is likely going to scratch the other person - Twelvesouth introduced the Action Sleeve Armband for Apple Watch.  This allows you to wear it on bicep.

Fits arms up to 17 inches and is hand-washable.

It has a built-in bumper protection to help shield against nicks and dings.  So if you have an activity the prevents you from wearing anything on your wrist - this is a solution for those activities.

Unlike the other items I mentioned that are coming soon - this one is already launched - it is $29.99 from their store.  Link in the show notes.

There were many many other accessories announced this year - if you were following the news - which one or ones were you most interested in.

Give us a call - 206-666-6364 - 206-moon-dog or shoot us an email at today in iOS at gmail dot com and let me know what accessory you are most likely to pull out the credit card for.

I want to thank Casper again for supporting our show in 2017.

Casper Mattresses have supportive Memory foam - there are No noisy springs to be wake up your significant other when you get up in the middle of the night to sneak a snack that breaks your stated new years resolutions.  Time Magazine even named it one of the best inventions of 2015.

    Hi Rob

I have Kodi installed on my iPad Pro 12.9 and iPhone.  Works great and I'm not jail broken. The process isn't so straight forward if you not a techie but it can be side loaded with Xcode and a developer acct. as for Exdous works great just as expected.  Thanks Rob for the show and all you do I look forward to show each week or so.

    Happy New year!!!

    Hi Rob,

On your last podcast there was a question about running Kodi  with the addon Exodus on iOS.  Exodus is the most popular addon with the most content.  I haven't downloaded it on my iPhone, but I have downloaded it on my 4th gen Apple TV and originally on a raspberry pi.  I have friends that have downloaded it onto their MacBook, amazon fire sticks, and google chromecast.  I haven't had any problems nor have I heard of any.

    Thanks for all you do,

    Regards,

    James C.

    Hi Rob,

In the last episode you mentioned the purchase of SuperMario Run was a once and done deal. And that you were able to unlock the full game on more than one device. Do you use Family Sharing?  We all have our own apple ids on our devices for everything but are linked with family sharing. I don't want to pay $40 to unlock the game for everyone as my kids will finish the game in a week and loose interest.

Let me know. I'll wait to bite the $10 bullet until I hear from you.

Happy New Years and here's to a full 2017 of your awesome podcast!!!

    Regards

My ITunes quit syncing. I bought a new external hard drive to move my iTunes to bigger drive.  Now I can not sync the apps on my phone to iTunes. Everything else is syncing fine. Any suggestions on how to fix that?

    unquote

Oh Oh - Pick me Pick Me.

See I actually did the exact same thing last week. I purchased a 256 GB SD card drive for my MacBook Pro - to give me well 256 more GB of storage - as I was running out - and I saw this huge chunk of apps taking up 150 GB on my hard drive - so I moved the folder where they were located to my SD card drive - as those are really backups and not something that needed to be on my faster drive. But I digress quite a bit. Here is the answer I posted

On a mac - the apps will be under - Music --> iTunes --> Mobile Applications

If you copied the Mobile Applications folder over to the new hard drive - what you then want to do is make an alias of the new folder and move the alias under Music --> iTunes - and then change the name of the original folder there - to "Mobile Applications Old" and make the alias - "Mobile Applications" In theory when you download a new app - if the second hard drive is connected the new apps should go there - and when you sync it should work - In Theory that is.

Or so I wrote in Theory- as I had not had a chance to test and confirm that - until now - I did the above - and then downloaded a new app on iTunes on my computer and as hoped - it downloaded on my SD HD - Then I did a sync - and it moved over to my iPhone 7+ - so it seems Theory worked this time.

Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts and comments in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Also FROM the Google Plus community were these comments per the last episode - which I always pin the last episode at the top.  Actually there were a lot of comments - here a few.

    From Craig B

    quote

Regarding transferring home videos to an iOS device from iTunes on a Mac; I successfully transferred a home video from my old MBP (stuck on ElCap) to my iPad (running 10.2 with the TV app, not the Video app). The video transferred with no errors and ended up in the Library/Home Videos section of the TV app. I don't know how my situation differs from yours.

Listening to the latest podcast and am enjoying the review of the AirPods (including the comment about the looks dept lol)

+Rob Walch really you are using the argument about driving with the AirPods? That's a lame excuse and it really drives me nuts! The argument is insane, you buy a $900 iPhone are willing to buy a $160 headphones but won't spend the pennies to buy a car stereo which you can nab for under $100.

The library comment? How hard is it to reach to your pocket and trigger the down volume button? (Lame excuse)

    unquote

Ouch - lame really - Well First if you are sitting down and the phone is in your pocket it can be pretty difficult to get to - same if it is in your purse - in either case it is much much harder than reaching up and adjusting on the headphones like you can with the wired headphones.

Per the car stereo - what if you don’t have the time to change it out or you have one of those cars it is nearly impossible to change out with out pulling out your whole dashboard.  Or what if you are in a rental car which you have no control of.

And Per Changing out a car stereo to something that does not support Wireless CarPlay in my opinion is throwing good money away at a bad solution. The  iLX-107 from Alpine I mentioned earlier is really the first really good CarPlay - aftermarket solution I have seen - as it supports wireless CarPlay.  And it is hardly pennies - it is $900.  Lame is not being able to easily adjust the volume of your AirPods - this has definitely bugged me the past week+ when using them.

There are others that also commented that Videos transferred fine to their iPhones and were playable in TV App.  However -  that is not the case for me - I keep seeing this message

iTunes can not sync movies or tv shows to the iPhone 7+ because the Videos App is not installed.  You must download the videos app from the App store on your iPhone in order to sync Movies or TV shows.

As I mentioned for me there is NO Videos app in the App store to install from Apple.  Kinda of still stuck there.

I thought maybe it was because originally I was not update to Sierra - that is not the case - as I am now updated to Sierra.

I have the latest update of all software. I am on the Beta - maybe that is it.  But for me - I can’t sync over my own movies from the Movies tab / section under my iPhone in iTunes.

Something for me to keep looking into.

One of the things I try not to do between Sept and end of December is talk about rumors of the next iPhone. I and I am sure you need a little break from iPhone Rumors.

Ok - it is Jan - Happy new Year - and time for some rumor catching up.

To top the list there is the competing rumors of the next iPhone - many believe it will be the iPhone 8 - a brand new design - curved glass and more items I will get into shortly. Others are now going with what I call the Sad Trombone Option - that is where the iPhone 2017 is the iPhone 7S and 7S+ - same design as currently but with a faster processor, and better cameras - maybe even the 7S getting a dual camera according to one rumor.

So really for the iPhone 2017 - we have iPhone 8 and iPhone 7S rumors.  Well except for the one rumor that says there will be three iPhones in 2017 - an iPhone 7S, 7S+ and iPhone 8.  Oy vey

So Lets go over the more exciting iPhone 8 rumors in more detail first.

First item is Fast Charging.  This will supposedly be in all new 2017 iPhones.  And as it sounds will allow you to charge up your iPhones quicker like some Android phones allow.

Rumor has it the new iPhones will have the Tristar 3 Hydra chip - which will allow this.  And hey if they are that specific it must be true - right?

Next item is Tap to Wake - And essentially this is another Android feature said to port over - you simply tap on the screen when asleep to see your notifications.

That likely could be an iOS 11 feature more than an iPhone 8 feature - but the rumors say - just of the iPhone 8.  And oh yeah - wait the Apple watch already has that feature - so yeah not really a stretch on this - but I still say - it would be an iOS 11 feature and not exclusive to just the top of the line 2017 iPhone or 2017 iPhones in general.  Probably any from the iPhone 6S and on - that has 3D touch already.  And before you call in and say the iPhone already has raise to wake - so why tap to wake - well if your phone is sitting on your desk or in a charging dock - it is easier to just tap than it is to raise.  So yes - I see this coming - but again as part of iOS 11.

Moving along there is the Glass Sandwich rumor - where you have glass on both sides.  And it will have an OLED screen and it will be curved - all this brings us to being able to wirelessly charge the iPhone 8.  This might have been backed up by the CEO of Energous - Steve Rizzone that told the Verge that it will provide wireless transmitters for charging before the end of 2017 to quote one of the largest consumer electronics companies in the world unquote - and that quote I can not tell you who it is - but I can virtually guarantee that you have products from this company on your person, sitting on your desk or a home. unquote.

If this is for apple what is really interesting is that Energous Wireless Transmitter for charging is not just a charging pad - they also can charge devices from up to 18 feet.  Anyone see Johnny Numonic - yeah - can’t see anything bad with this.

The iPhone 8 will be larger - at 5.8 inches in size.  That one really seems fishy - even on the Android size - those that were making 6 inchers and really anything from 5.7 to 6 Inchers have moved down to a more standard 5.5 Inches.

The home button says bye bye with the iPhone 8 as well.

And of course we can not miss out on the Rumor that there will be a head set you can plug the iPhone 8 into for Virtual Reality uses that will compete with Oculos and Sammy per their VR offerings.  Lets just say it took me a few days to recover from the first time I tried out the Occulos VR head sets - so that is not something I am all to eager to see.  But my Kids both sure are excited for it.

ALL of this adds up to an iPhone 8 that sits higher on the pricing tiers than the current iPhone 7+.

Per the iPhone 7S or 7S+ - each of the rumors above that did not have to do with curved screens or glass backs and wireless charging have been associated to either or both.

Including going to a 5.5 Inch OLED screen for the 7S+ which would allow for VR applications / headset.

The biggest argument for why an iPhone 8 in 2017 has to do with the 10 year anniversary of Tii - I mean two months later the 10 year anniversary of the iPhone. I have even had some say with the new Apple head quarters opening this year - they need to do the bigger update to the iPhone 8 to go with the Spaceship campus opening.  Still not sure how those two are connected.

I will start to talk more about rumors as the year goes on - but safe to say - if there is a new iPhone 8 in 2017 with a new design - we should see leaked photos in the April / May time frame.

But here is the best part - don’t take my word for it - try them out yourself for 30 days risk free.  Boll and Branch is so sure your going to fall in love with their sheets that they give you 30 nights to try them out.  If you don’t love them for ANY reason - they will take them back and refund you without any hassle at all.

    http://www.macrumors.com/2017/01/03/apple-watch-3-fall-

    2017-improved-battery-life/

Another rumor mill item is about the 3rd generation Apple Watches.

Shocker - improved battery life is one of the rumored new specs.  Hmmm - that was the most rumored spec for the 2nd gen as well.  I think someone is re-using rumors.

The 3rd gen Apple watches would be introduced at Apple’s Fall event that also introduces the iPhone 2017.

There will also supposedly be improved sensors - ones Apple wanted to get into the first two gens - but were not ready until now.  Ohhhh - that sounds exciting if not completely vague.

And then there is the rumor about adding in Cellular connectivity - hey wait - that was an 2nd gen rumor too.

And that does not jive with that improved battery life rumor - then and does not now.

This is starting to sound like something from Digitimes - oh crap - If I followed the links at the bottom back a few sites - the one on Mac rumors - there it is a link to Digitimes. Oh wait - Digitimes is just referencing a report from another paper - with a link to the Economic Daily News.  Whew - if it was un-named sources or sources in the know - from Digitimes - we would have deleted this segment.

That said - most of this is really just a rehash of the rumors of the 2nd Gen Apple Watch.

Most other rumors also say the 3rd Gen Apple watch will look like the first 2.  There is of course talk of a new next gen processor - the S3.  Bluetooth 4.2 is another rumor - but I think someone just looked at the iPhone 7+ specs and said - yeah update to that.

And yes there is the re-purposed rumor that it will be thinner - which goes all so well with the better battery life and Cellular rumors.

Honestly - I don’t expect much to change in the apple watch rumors between now and end of August.  There is only so much you can guess will be in there.

Like say adding in a camera for it - oh yeah - that was in a few rumor posts at the end of last year too. That one I feel is coming - just not sure if it will be in Gen 3 or Gen 4.

    Hi Rob,

Long time listener since day one. Love the show!

I received my AirPods thanks to your TII push...ordered right away and they arrived 12 days early. Love them. Thanks for the push!

Noticed that the little case is getting scratched next to my keys in my pocket. Can't keep the case in the other pocket because that's where the phone is.

Well, you know that little pocket in jeans above the right front pocket that is shaped like a little triangle? I finally found a use for it. It's perfectly sized to fit the AirPod case and it keeps it from getting all scratched up and keeps the case handy to get out of your pocket quick!

Keep up the show Rob, you help a lot of people and we appreciate it!

    Hi Rob,

I have a troubling FaceTime issue that I'm hoping you or one of your listeners could offer some advice on.

My wife was making a regular voice call to me recently, then during the call switched to FaceTime. For some reason the call disconnected before I answered FaceTime. Now here's the weird part... my wife tried to call me on FaceTime again. My name and profile image appeared as the FaceTime call connected... but to her shock, a total stranger appeared! The man on the other side of the call was just as surprised as my wife. They spoke briefly and he had no idea why the FaceTime call had come through to him.

Long story short, I deactivated and reactivated FaceTime on both our iPhones, but my wife still connnected to the stranger when trying to FaceTime me. We've since both disabled FaceTime as a precaution, while also changing both of our passwords and reviewing all of our security settings and authorized devices.

Neither of us have ever had this issue before. Both of our Apple ID's have had two-factor authentication and strong passwords for as long as I can remember. There were no old phone numbers or email addresses listed in either of our contact entries, which I thought might have caused the issue. Looking on the Apple support forums, I've seen that this is not a unique issue, with a number of people experiencing the same problem.

Do you or your listeners have any suggestions on what might have caused this, or should I just put it down to a random FaceTime bug?

Thanks for the podcast and keep up the great work!

    Best regards,

    Hi Rob,

Following even more rumours about AirPods being delayed until February (two days before Apple released them), I decided to wait no longer. I purchased a pair of Powerbeats 3 from a local store. The have the same W1 chip as the AirPods so I expected them to work seamlessly with my Apple Watch 2, IPhone 7 and MacBook Pro.

I switched them on, pressed the button that showed on my IPhone screen and they paired immediately. Very impressive. Unfortunately, that’s where the magic ended. The phone worked perfectly but the Voiceover from my watch came for the watch speaker, not the headphones. The same with my MacBook. All devices showed the headphones as paired. I was able to switch the output on my watch to the headphones manually, but this stopped them working with the phone.

I called Apple Support and was told that bluetooth only allows a single connection and that the headphones were working as they should. I disputed that statement and explained that I have a pair of Trekz Titanium and a cheap pair of X7 bluetooth headphones, both use multi-point technology,  that allow Voiceover to be heard from the watch and phone at the same time. The advisor said that if I have devices that do what I want, I should stick with them and he advised me to return the Powerbeats for a refund, which I did.

Two days after this disappointing setback, Apple released the AirPods. I have not yet ordered a pair because they have the same W1 chip and I suspect that they will work exactly the same way as the Powerbeats.

I’d be very grateful if you listeners could let us know what their experience is with the AirPods using Voiceover on multiple devices. I can’t see the point of Apple hyping this super simple connectivity if you have to manually switch between devices every time.

    Still loving the show.

There has been some posts and comments in the Google+ community about the App - Finders for AirPods.  The dev sent me a promo code for this app.  I have not had a chance to fully test it out.  I will do so and report back on the next episode.  I have seen mixed comments on it.

What I am going to do is hide one of my AirPods somewhere in my house - and give my wife the phone with the App and see if she can find it.  Then do the same with my sons.  Then see how it works from that.  To me that is the real world test for finding something you lost in your house.
