In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote “As more developers reach consumers through platform-independent technologies such as HTML5, Apple’s app store could be cut out of the loop as customers gain freedom to transfer their chosen applications from one device to another. unquote

Yeah - not so much.  Seems what consumers really wanted was native apps. Always have most likely always will.  Just Sayin

    iPhone-Sales-Top-10-Million-Set-New-Record.html

So how did Apple do with iPhone sales the first weekend - Well according to Apple - pretty darn well.  Over 10 Million iPhones were sold in the first three days.  Again this is sales to the end user - not channel fill.

From our good friend Tim Cook - Quote:

“Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn’t be happier, We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin. While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible.

    unquote

And this 10 Million iPhones sold was done without the iPhone launching in China - just in 9 countries.

This Friday September 26th - the iPhone 6 and 6+ will also launch in the following 22 additional countries.

Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey and United Arab Emirates.

Again all those countries get the iPhone 6 and 6+ on the 26th of September  and the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will be available in 115 countries by the end of 2014.

So pretty aggressive rollouts this year.  Nothing official yet on when China will get the new iPhones - but word is Apple did finally get regulatory approval for both handsets.  Some are speculating Apple would push out the launch of the iPhone 6 and 6+ in China until early in 2015 to get it one full year after it launched on China Mobile - I am skeptical on that front.  I think long term Apple would like to get China as close to launch day as possible - and going to early 2015 now for all three carriers in China does not seem to fit with getting China closer to or on Launch day for future launches.

    We shall see.

    iphone-6-usage-8x-higher-than-iphone-6-plus.html

While apple has not said what the break down of sales for the iPhone 6 is vs the 6+ - Chitika is reporting it is about an 8 to 1 ratio of iPhone 6's to 6+'s

Most of the reason for that skewed ratio is most likely do to supply constraint for the 6+.

This info from Chitika also resulted in the Worst graph of the day - where they compared the  iPhone 5 to iPhone 6 and 6+ as a percentage of iPhones in use. The number of iPhones in use now is much much larger than when the iPhone 5 launched.  So looking at % of installed base using the iphone6 and 6+  it should not be compared to the iPhone 5 launch - as back then the installed user base of iPhones was much smaller.  The installed base of iPhones at the launch of the iPhone 5 was less than 250 Million units - but when the iPhone 6 and 6+ launched it was over 570 million units.

So this worst chart showed that 3 days after launch the iPhone 5 was at 2.7% of installed iPhones.  Yet for the iPhone 6 and 6+ it was only 1.8% of the installed base.  Which means you can't compare the two.  The installed base is so much bigger now than two years ago.

    the-rumors-going-around-that-you-can-charge-y#2ncxvj4

I really did not want to report on this one - but just incase - I thought better safe than sorry.  If you remember last year there was a rumor about iOS 7 making the iPhone waterproof - that was one that made the circles. Who knows if anyone actually dunked their iPhone to see if it was real or fake - but Obviously that was bogus - and anyone that did dunk - it well I have a nice new Symbian Phone I would like to sell you.  This year the bogus story making the rounds is that the iPhone 6 and 6+ come with new feature called WAVE - and essentially it is a graphic that goes over how putting your iPhone in the microwave allows you to charge it up.  Again this is fake - don't put your iPhone in the microwave - ever.  Now hopefully I really did not need to even report on it - but better safe than sorry.

    http://techcrunch.com/2014/09/16/iphone-6-plus-review/

There was definitely no shortage of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus reviews out there.  I have links to a few in the show notes for Ep 322.  One from Mashable for the iPhone 6, one from Techcrunch for the 6 plus - and then another from tech crunch for the 6 and 6plus where the author goes over using them at disney land.

I am not going to review the reviews - that is a little to meta for me.

Ok - let me go over my experiences trying to get my iPhone 6+.  I tried to order online the night of pre-orders - but could not - so I went the next day to the T-Mobile store at 8150 West 135th street in Overland Park and ordered it at the store and paid for it out right - mind you I made a few trips up to the t-mobile store to make sure all is ok - they were great dealing with me.  Even though it showed it ordered my account initially did not give a specific delivery date. Then Wednesday the 17th - I received an email saying my iPhone was coming on the 19th. Then later on in the day I received another email saying basically never mind - you are back ordered and no date for delivery.  So I went and waited on line at the Apple store on the 19th - I arrived at 3:00 in the morning - in the past 3:00 AM would be good for a top 20 spot in line usually - but worst case top 30 spot.  This year - not even in the top 100.  This years demand was amazing as we will hear later from other listeners feedback.  So I waited on line until a little before 8:00 AM when the blue shirts made their way to me to ask me what iPhone I wanted and I was replied to with - Sorry - no more iPhone 6+'s for T-mobile - they only had 5 at the Leawood Apple store.  So I left empty handed.  But I did get two emails from T-mobile while waiting on line that said my iPhone was still backorder - lemon juice into a paper cut it did feel - so I figured it would be a long time before I saw my iPhone 6+ maybe not until November.  But somehow on Saturday morning I received an email saying my iPhone was on its way out to me - which I received while I was on my way out to my son's chess tournament - which his team won first place for his elementary's schools first ever first place chess trophy.  Way to go guys.  Anyway when I made it back home after the tournament the iPhone 6+ was waiting for me - and I think my Son was even more excited then me.  But once I received it - I noticed my Wife was suffering from PIDS - actually I noticed she suffered from PIDS when I received my iPhone 5S and 4S.  Guys if you don't know what PIDS is it is Post iPhone delivery syndrome and it usually shows up as shortness of conversation - and crazy requests to do chores as soon as I get the new iPhone - that is followed by mild to server moodiness. Sever cases usually are cause by you going on and on about your new iPhone - and your significant other feels shall we say a little neglected.  So guys and gals - let me say this - don't let your significant other suffer from PIDS - take them out to dinner or do something else to let them know you still care. If you really want to win brownie points when your new iPhone comes - tell you significant other you will open the box later - right now you would rather go to dinner and a movie. Huge brownie points you shall win - That is your PSA for PIDS - make sure you show your significant other the same amount of attention you are showing your new iPhone - or you may find the side effects of PIDS lasting for weeks or more.

Per getting my iPhone 6+ Michael Binno - the manager of the t-mobile at 8150 W 135th street - came through big time.  Let me just say major major kudos to Michael and his team.  And I love that with the T-mobile plan I also get 5GB of hot spot data from my iPhone.  Sweet.  The t-mobile plan I went to was a family plan - which is 80 a month + $10 a month for my wife to get her 3GB on her son to be unlocked iPhone 5S.  And unlimited data and 5GB of hot spot data for $30 a month for me.  So $120 a month for both - and I get unlimited everything.  So right were I was with AT&T - plus unlimited texts and hot spot feature.  over all this plan is just $10 more than my AT&T plan alone and $40 less then my previously two plans combined.  So a nice $400+ saving a year.  Again Thanks to Michael Binno at T-mobile for all his help and dealing with my needy butt - I went up there a good 6+ times last week to check on things.  Yes - I am that customer.

Ok - So let me give you my thoughts of the iPhone 6+.  Or my Big Expletive iPhone as my wife calls it.  Lets just say it is big and if you are used to using the iPhone 4 or even the 5 - this is a big jump up.  If you have small hands - it is tough to hold - as my son is learning - just when in a carpeted area and sitting on the coach.  If you have glasses like I do and you go to talk on it as you know a phone - yeah it will smack against your glasses.  It is big.

That said - if you are over 45 and are tromboning with your smaller iPhone - this will definitely be the iPhone you are looking for.

When initially setting it up - there is a choice to make that is between standard mode and zoomed mode.  Or if you look in the apple code - this is what Apple engineers call the under 45 mode or 45 and over mode.  In the 45 and over mode or Zoom mode - it makes things just a bit bigger on the screen.  If you select the wrong mode to start with - go to settings --> Display & Brightness and select View and you can see the difference.  Yes - I have mine set at the 45 and old mode. And just like that - no I don't - found out at least for my iPhone 6+ if you go to Zoom Mode when you rotate the home screen into Landscape mode it does not rotate like it does in Standard Mode.  Not sure if that is a bug (likely) or by design (I hope not).

I did something with the iPhone 6+ I have not done since the original iPhone - I set it up as brand new device from the start - no sync'g to past back ups.  I wanted it to be virgin.  And you know all my Battery saving suggestions - well to start I did not do any of them except turn off Airdrop.  So how well did the iPhone 6+ do on battery life - OMG - Better than any past iPhone I have ever had by a long long margin.  I charged it up on Sunday night - over 48 hours later - I had usage of 7 1/2 hours and 1 day and 19 hours of stand by time.  And it was at 40% of battery life.  Yes 40% left after 2 entire days and then some.  And that is without optimizing for battery life.  And it made it a full 72+ hours and at 72 hours it had 7% of battery life left.  3 full work days and still not dead. It is is not even optimized yet.

I will report next episode how it does after I optimize it.

So one clear group of people the iPhone 6+ is for - are those that need and desire much better battery life.  This is the iPhone they or you and I have been wishing for for the past 7+ years.

If nothing else changed between the 5S and 6+ - and it was just the battery life increase - I would say it is well worth the purchase.  Of course there are other changes that make it even better.

When you go into landscape mode - with the stock apps like notes or mail or the stock apps - there are special features that make it more like a tablet - and give you split screen features.

When you rotate to landscape mode at the home screen The dock on the bottom goes the right side vertically and the icons rotate - very nice feature.

The screen is absolutely beautiful.  But the 5S and 6 screens are not that far behind.  If you compare it to a non-retina screen - that is where it is amazing.  If you want to get all geeky on how good the screen is - which Display mate found to be the best LCD smartphone screen they every tested.  Lots and lots and lots of data at the link in the show notes for ep 322 titled - iPhone 6 and 6 Plus Display Technology Shoot-Out - I mean lots of tech specs.

But simply put it is a beautiful screen actually the most beautiful screen ever for a smartphone.  And did I mention it is big.

It is also very thin - and you know what you get when you mix big and thin and a metal package - yup you guessed it - you get bendable - but not in a good way bendable.  Ok - this is actually nothing new - reports of bent iPhones go back to the iPhone 5 - and skinny jeans - and well guess what as the iPhone gets thinner and bigger - yup it needs less pressure to bend it.  Pics are already popping up and expect this issue to have legs for a while.

Here is the deal - back pocket = bad.  Front pocket of skinny jeans = bad.   Well skinny jeans by themselves = bad.  So maybe what the iPhone 6 and 6plus will do is usher in the death of skinny jeans.  For that alone Johnny Ive should be knighted.

Any way if you put the iPhone or any metal smartphone in a tight pocket front or back and apply enough torque and rotational force you will bend it even the iPhone 5 and 5S.  Please be careful with the iPhone 6 and especially the 6plus.

And a little bit more on this - Seems now they are calling this Bentgate or bendgate - Yup just like with AttennaGate and Maps Gate and Purple Haze gate and Supper complicated lift  your finger print off the glass and replicate with silicone gate - we now have another way blown out of proportion gate for an iPhone.  iMore just put up a nice post titled - Yes, the aluminum iPhone 6 and 6 plus will bend if put under too much pressure, because physics.  And yeah - that sums it up. Or let me sum it up - NO DUHHH. Sadly however I don't think this is the last we will hear of this as the Android boyz are getting worked up into a Trolling frenzy on this one.  Oh and if yours does bend a little - do NOT repeat do not try to bend it back - as if it bends and the screen is not cracked - trying to bend it is very likely to crack the screen - just leave it as is until someone comes up with a method to bending it back - which probably would involve first removing the screen.  Again with the screen attached do not repeat do not try to bend it back.  You have been warned.

Now back to talking about not over blown items - And per the iPhone 6plus - the slow motion video is simply stunning.  I have my sons begging me to video them over and over jumping off of things or throwing things or catching things.  Well that is when they are not busy doing a time lapse video on their own iPhone.  More on that later.

With the 6 and 6plus you can switch between 240 fps and 120 fps for slow motion video - and it is so smooth at 240 fps.  The demo on stage did not do it justice.  Especially when we were practicing the egg drop for my one sons science competition.  They loved it - plus it showed really well how their package was hitting the ground.

I would highly recommend you get a case for the iPhone 6+ - it really is a slippery litter bugger.  And the smaller your hands the more likely you are to drop it.

I have been also doing a lot of phantom power butting pressing.  It is a bit tough to get used to pushing the power button on the side - 7+ years of pushing at the top to turn the screen off - it will take some time to get used to pushing on the side.

    PLAY VOICEMAIL - RON_OH_IPHONE BENDING

Ok - one more mention of a good post on Bendgate comes from Cult of Mac.  They actually beat me to the punch as I was putting together the same posts - Kudos Buster Hein - Hats off.

Any way I was collecting photos and reports of Bent Metal smartphones - and that is what they did.  Buster has pics of a Bent iPhone 5S, iPhone 5, iPhone 4S (not of the 4 - but I have a few if he wants them), Now don't think this is an Apple issue - this is a metal smartphone reality.  As he also has pics of a Bent Sammy Galaxy S4, Sony Xperia Z1, Lumia 925, HTC Evo, Oppo, And even a Blackberry Q10, And I could also add in photos of Bent HTC Ones.  Point is Thin Metal smartphones given enough pressure will bend.  This is not Bendgate - this is Bend Duhh Gate

I don't mean to poo poo this - but you know what that is a lie - I do mean to poo poo this - just like I poo poo'd Attenna Gate and purple haze gate and Really complicated finger print reproduction gate Point is the tech press loves a good Apple hater story - Haters are gonna Hate - and these stories are alway over blown. The iPhone 6 and 6+ or incredible phones - just be smart in how you treat them or any other big thin metal smartphone. We are talking a few phones accidentally bent out of 10 Million and more than a few bent on purpose for shock value.

And here is one bit of advice for your iPhone 6 and 6+ - put it in your pocket upside down - so that the Bottom is facing up.  All the videos and pics I see seem to show it bending at the point of weakness which is around the bottom of the volume buttons - so if you put it in your pocket top side up you are putting that weakest point near where you would be applying the most torque - putting it in your pocket upside down - should in theory help in moving the weak point away from where it will get the most torque.  And no cases will not help.  Getting rid of all skinny jeans should help. Well it would not hurt that is for sure.

Now the bendable issue aside - Squaretrade did a study of the new iPhone 6 and 6+ - and found them more durable than the iPhone 5S - and the Galaxy S5.  With the 6 being a little more durable than the 6+.  But still good news in that Squaretrade found both iPhone 6's more durable than the 5S.  Sadly - no Tii promo code or sponsorship this year.  That means no extra discount for Tii listeners - I did try to get them to do something for the listeners - but seems they have a short memory of how well listeners from this show have done in signing up. That said I asked and had other ask me to ask them to compare their current iPhone 6 plans to that of AppleCare+ and here is their response.

    Quote

    Hi Rob,

With regards to AppleCare+, the best way to highlight/contrast us vs. AppleCare+ is the following:

    1. Price is comparable (ST is $99 for a two-year plan + a $75 deductible per claim, AppleCare+ is also $99 but a slightly higher deductible at $79 per claim)
    2. SquareTrade covers up to 3 claims, AppleCare+ covers up to 2.
    3. More importantly, we give you the most flexibility. If you want to have your phone serviced at the GeniusBar, we'll reimburse those claims. However, if you don't live near a GeniusBar or if you need a full replacement, we can handle those claims as well. Thus, you pretty much will get the same coverage as AppleCare+ (since we reimburse claims at a slightly lower deductible) but give you more flexibility.

    Regards,

    -Kenny at SquareTrade

Again no sponsorship from Squaretrade - but since we are talking about bending and dropping and breaking - probably a good time to talk about them.

Moving from those that accidentally destroy their iPhone to those that do it on purpose - and that means - yes - iFixit has their complete tear downs to the iPhone 6 and 6+ available - link in the show notes of course.  And what we know now is we can finally fill out the bingo card with 2 more misses - the iPhone 6 and 6+ both have 1 GB of RAM.  And they are running at 1.4 GHz clock speed.

The did show the screen repair this time around seems to be easier than with the 5S.  The Battery on the 6+ is 2915 mAh vs 1560 mAh for the 5S and 1810 mAh for the iPhone 6.  So part of the reason for the great battery life is the great big battery.

If you want to see what Triquint, Skyworks and RF Micro devices chips made it in the iPhone 6+ - please look for the links in the show notes for iFixit tear downs.  I will not bore everyone else - with the uber geeky details.  The key internal questions were RAM  and Battery size.  Thanks iFixit for answering those questions.

    http://www.imore.com/iphone-6-and-iphone-6-plus-benchmarks

One thing that is bit geeky I do want to go over is some of the benchmark tests for the new iPhones.  First the performance difference between the 5S and the 6's is not that great - maybe 15% to 20% - which is a good bump - but not basically the 100% bump between the 5 and the 5S thanks to the 64 bit processor upgrade.

But the question many want to know is how does it compare to Android's best devices.  Well very very well.  And totally smokes them when it comes to single core testing.

Here is a quote from John Poole of Primate Labs whom are the makers of Geekbench benchmark tests

    Quote

Geekbench 3 shows that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are 15% faster than the iPhone 5s. While this difference isn't as dramatic as the one between iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5 (the 5s is twice as fast as the 5), a large part of last year's difference came from the switch from the 32-bit ARMv7 architecture to the 64-bit ARMv8 architecture.

When compared against other flagship handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S 5 or the Motorola Moto X (2014), the iPhone 6 has significantly better single-core performance and comparable multi-core performance.

Single-core performance is arguably the most important performance metric for smartphones. Every application will benefit from improved single-core performance while only specialized applications will benefit from improved multi-core performance.

    unquote.

So looking at the single core results for iPhones.  the 6+ won with a 1626 score - higher is better - the 6 was right there with it at 1618.   The 5S came in with a very respectable 1407.   Then the iPhone 5 at 710.  Like I said the 5S was basically double the 5.  The 4S by the way had a score of 215.  So the 6 is almost 8 time faster on that test.

When they looked at the iPhones vs Android's top phones - the best Android phone scored a 980 on the single core test.  The S5 was at 912 - no doubt in an over clock mode.  The HTC one M8 was at 910 and the LG Nexus 5 limped in at 830.

So Yes - on this test - the iPhone 5S and 6's smoked the best Android phones out there.

But there were other tests run too and the results were also impressive for the iPhone 6's.   The SunSpider test, Kraken 1,1 test, Google Octante V2, WebXprt, 3DMark 1.2, GFX Bench 3.0, and Web browsing Battery life - the iPhone 6+ beat all the Android smartphones and often smoked most of them.

So rest assured if you get the 6+ you are getting a very powerful - the most powerful smartphone currently on the market.  But if you have the iPhone 5S - it is not that much faster - as the 5S is pretty fast itself.  Maybe that is why there was no new 4" iPhone this year.  Maybe next year - Apple does 3 new iPhones on the A9 processor - a 4", 4.7" and 5.5" version.  Again this goes back to skinny jeans and small pockets - and ladies hands.  I still think there is a place for the 4" smartphone - and my wife for one - does not want anything larger than the 5S.

Now the bad news for those that I have convinced to get the 6+ - they are hard to get.  Apple is showing 4 weeks for delivery - Carriers are showing longer than that - and 22 more countries go on line with the iPhone 6's this weekend.  If you don't have one on order now - it is likely you will not get it until late October best case.

    Hi Rob,

Here is an interesting undocumented tip from a LifeHacker review I read on the iPhone6 and 6Plus.

    http://lifehacker.com/use-an-ipad-power-adapter-to-

    charge-your-iphone-6-faste-1637676153

Excerpted from article linked above: “If you're looking to boost the charging speed of your new iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, the folks over at iLounge found that the new iPhone models can take a 2.1 amp charge—like what you'll find in iPad chargers—to recharge a bit faster.

According to some preliminary tests, iLounge found that both models can charge faster using a 2.1A supply, even though they ship with a 1A power supply. Forum members over at MacRumors found similar results. Assuming the new iPhone models can actually take in the full 2.1A charge, this makes sense, since the added juice can actually be used to charge quicker, unlike on older iPhone models that'll only take the 1A regardless of which adapter you use. Either way, if you have an iPad (or other) charger sitting around, give it a try, there's no risk to damaging your iPhone.”

Hope you and the listener’s find this interesting and helpful, I look forward to your own reviews once you get your iPhone in hand. Thanks and keep up the great show.

    Thanks,

    Ron D

    Hi Rob,

I've never used a case for any of my 3 iPhones since day one (literally). But the combination of how cool this case seems and my concerns of having my iPhone 6+ in my pocket and it potentially bending made me order this. We'll see if it is a good decision. I'll let you know what I think of it.

Thanks for all the butt kicking great work you do!

Lets Talk iOS 8 update.  As you know last episode I recommended you not update for at least one week - well it is one week - and quite a few of you are emailing in asking are we there yet are we there yet.   Well I guess it depends on why you waited.  One of the reasons I said to wait was just to avoid the traffic jam of 100's of millions of people downloading the updates.    To me this is a reason where is something goes wrong - it can go really wrong in the first few days due to a stopped or delayed download.  If that was you key reason for waiting that traffic jam is behind us.  Another reason to wait is because of the possibility of some key apps you need not working with iOS 8 - obviously I can't go over all 1.3+ million apps to tell if your key apps are updated for iOS or have issues with iOS 8.  Best to look in iTunes for the most recent reviews of your key apps to see what people are saying - but if your key apps are ok - then that reason is gone.  By the way do not update to the new twitter app - that is do NOT update.

The Last reason I said to wait is because of likely bugs in iOS 8.0 - and bugs there were or are.  Lets go over some these bugs and see if these are issues for you or not.

There is a bug such that Healthkit 3rd party apps will not work - and apple pulled support for.  Clearly not a reason not to update as you already don't have it - so nothing lost.

There is an issue with 3rd party keyboards could become deselected when a user enters their passcode.  Again not a show stopper as there is no 3rd party keyboards in iOS7

There is an issue that prevents some apps from accessing photos from the Photo library.

There is a reliability issue with the Reachability feature on iPhone 6 and 6+ not an issue for upgrades.

There is an issue which could cause unexpected cellular data usage when receiving SMS / MMS messages.  Hmmm - that one sound ominous if on a limit data plan.

There are some issues with Ask to Buy for Family Sharing for in-app purchases

There is an issue where ringtones were sometimes not restored from iCloud back ups

And there is a bug that prevents uploading photos and videos from Safari.

How do we know about all these bugs - well those are the ones that iOS 8.0.1 was supposed to fix - and I supposed to fix - as it was released and instantly caused issues - but more on that in a bit.

Other issues reported with iOS 8 that likely are not fixed in iOS 8.0.1 or were just not listed are:

Issues with wifi connectivity and speed,  Incorrect bookmark redirects,  issues with quick battery drain, iMessage glitches, frequent  crashes of the Settings App, Laggy Notifications, formatting issues with the dialogue boxes, Issues with audio from various music apps layering on top of one another, Settings app forgets spotlight preferences, Automatic VPN bug, Issues with call forwarding and freezing when accessing Visual Voicemail, issues with Airdrop support for Passbook Passes, and Extensions Bugs to name some of the more reported about bugs.

There are also some minor lock screen bypasses - all around siri. You can get a locked iPhone to post to Facebook by saying siri post to Facebook - and if they have Facebook set up - it lets you post a message to Facebook.  This could be funny or embarrassing if some prankster finds your phone and starts posting crazy things to your time line - like say someone found my iPhone and started posting I love android. ok - never mind no one who knows me would believe that.   But obviously could be an issue.   Another one is saying to siri show me call history - and it brings up your recent calls.  That could be miss used to spy on an significant other or work mate.   Again this is from the lock screen not password needed.   And you can also get to notes and see them with out unlocking.  Say - show me my notes.  Siri then shows a list of notes - if you try tapping on one it asks for you to unlock - but if you say add to my notes - and then tell her which one and just say add period - it will make the addition and show you the full note - unlocked.

So be careful about what you have in notes.

And you can also say ask siri if you have any voice mail messages and then ask her to play them for you. Again no unlocking needed.

So be careful what you keep in notes and voicemail - they can easily be accessed by someone that has access to siri.

At this point if you want to upgrade to iOS 8 - it really comes down to how painful were all those items I talked about to you personally.  There are bugs and security issues - oh my.

Oh and if you are updating to iOS 8 - you need about 6 GB of space on your iOS device to do the upgrade on the device. If you have the Tii App - look for the PDF in the post after ep 320 which goes over my recommended steps for updating - which includes removing photos and videos from you photo roll on iOS 7.  That helps free up space.  Still best to do a major double 0 update from your computer and not over the air.

I mentioned iOS 8.0.1 earlier - and if you have the Tii App - well you also received a Push message from me warning you not to update to it.  And so how well did the first update for iOS 8 go - well I think Mashable said it best with the post title - Apple pulls iOS 8.0.1 update after disastrous Rollout.  That is not link bait folks - that is pretty accurate reporting.  How bad was it - well if you updated on your iPhone 6 or 6+ - you can kiss your cellular service goodbye.  Yeah that bad.  It also borked Touch ID completely.  Basically it made your iPhone 6 or 6+ into a big iPod touch 5th gen.

So what do you do if you did not listen to me and were one of those first to jump in blind and willy nilly and now are sitting with a big ole iPod touch - well you can restore back to iOS 8 to fix the issue - and that does mean connecting to your computer.  I did mention - never ever ever do an over the air update to iOS while on the road right?  Yeah - would really suck to be on the road do this update and loose your phone and not be able to update.

For those of you updating to iOS 8 now - because you don't care about the the security or bug issues - make sure you do NOT  select iCloud drive when setting up if you now are syncing files stored on iCloud with your mac or iOS 7 devices.   If you select iCloud drive now - you will have issues.  For now hold off on iCloud drive at least until Yosemite is released and all your iCloud devices are at iOS 8 and your mac is at Yosemite.

    are-locking-people-out-of-apples-family-sharing-for-a-calendar-year/

Thanks to Dr. John for this next one - which also affected early adopters of iOS 8.  This issue had to do with Family sharing - where once set up and you choose people to share with it appeared that your members were unable to actually share digital media among family members - or so it appeared with this bug the issue would go away after a little time - but those really impatient would try removing and adding back into a family and after a couple of those actions you used up the number of families you could join and then were locked out of your family for a year.

Supposedly Apple fixed the issue with the delay in showing up in a family - but not again before it was too late for those that fill clicking often and quickly fixes all issue crowd.  For them they have 360 or so days to think about how they were put down by the man.

As a reminder Family sharing allows up to six people in a household to share each other's iTunes, iBooks and App Store purchases. It also enables families to keep up with each others' photos, calendars and locations.

More on Family sharing on future episodes.

Funny thing is with all these issues mention the NY Times had a piece titled - Upgrading to iOS 8 on an old iPhone? Prepare for Trouble, but do it anyway.

In a nut shell - all the bug and warts mentioned earlier still are not as negative as the new features are positive - so net some gain for most for the update.

This Episode is not the episode we get into those positives - given the issues and the pulling of iOS 8.0.1 - I think at this time I will wait until the update to the update is released to really go over iOS 8. In the mean time - all those already on iOS 8 call in with your favorite new feature - be it predictive type, 3rd party keyboards, Battery Usage, improvements to the weather app or what ever it is you really are liking new in iOS 8 - let us know - 206-666-6364 - that is 206-moon-dog  or send an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com.

Now for some of you iOS 8 just has not been worth it - and normally I would tough - you are stuck - but for some reason Apple has left the signing of iOS 7.1.2 active - that means you can downgrade to iOS 7.1.2 from iOS 8.  I am not going to go over it - as I am sure it is a small number that frustRated - did you hear the second R that time.  Any way those FrustRated with iOS 8 and looking to move back look for the link titled How to downgrade iOS 8 to iOS 7.1.2 in the show notes ep 322 at today in ios dot com.

I want to sum up the past week and say this - iOS 8 was well as messed up as I thought it would be - to me it was really Beta 6 of iOS 8.  And the next update is the real gold Master.  Guess when you have artificial launch dates - stuff like this happens.

The Bend Dahhh Gate to me is a joke and overblown hype a non-issue - the real issue was what is happening at Apple that iOS 8.0.1 was released?  Did they not Quality control that release?   Did no one at apple with an iPhone 6 or at their carrier partners test this out first.  This was a major black eye and looking back this week the big issue - not Bend Dahhh Gate

    Hello Rob,

I received your push notification today on 9/24 to avoid the iOS 8.01 update and i wanted to thank you for the warning. Although I have an iPhone 5s and may not have had any problems I feel my chances for a corruption in the iOS would have been higher from a faulty update.

Per your advice in previous podcasts I do not download a new major update until at least 2 weeks or when you give the go ahead around that time. My belief is that my current iOS works great, is responsive and doesn't crash. Why would I be in such a hurry to change this?

    Regards,

    Hi Rob,

You aren't kidding... Made the mistake being bored and not thinking it would be as bad as 8.0 but boy was I wrong.  Both the Touch ID and cellular for AT&T died on my iPhone 6 Plus. I had to put it back in DFU  and then attach to iTunes for system restore.  Spoke to apple on chat, they said it is being pulled and investigated.  They said that any issues need to be reported to www.apple.com/feedback

    Hey rob,

I have a confession to make. I hear you tell people to wait a week or so before downloading new iOS. I never listen. I always do it and have never had a problem. Fact is, I still haven't had a problem but I almost downloaded the update today and I would have been pretty mad at myself if I messed my device up. I now see why you tell purple this. Thanks for looking out for us!

    Hi Rob

I have to say I am not a fan of the changes Apple have made to the Photos app. I liked having an album for photos in my camera roll and one for photos in my photo stream. I used to have photos that were on both my camera roll and photo stream and some that were on just one or the other. Has iOS 8 simply lumped together in the one location, all of my photos from my photo stream and camera roll?

What is also confusing is that I'm now seeing numerous duplicate photos.

    Hi Rob,

Im a little disappointed in how the new iOS release was supposed to include so many features and didn't. I feel like the new iOS releases in October. I feel that they should have either waited on the new software or released continuity, Yosemite and HealthKit apps with the new iOS. Along with Apple pay. I know there were some issues but they should have waited until October when they had it all together.

I love my gold iPhone 6: 64gb! I'm enjoying the excellent battery life especially since I followed the information you posted recently. I am a die hard Apple fan, but the in inconvenience is well really an inconvenience.

One new popular post in the G+ community this past week came from Me again - I cheated - I pinned it up on the top.  It was about peoples experiences waiting on line.  It was a nice post with a lot of replies.  But another good and important one came from Bob Correa - who posted about iOS 8.0.1 - and once he did - I pinned that to the top of the board instead - to warn people not to update to iOS 8.0.1 - No it was not to gloat about saying you should wait - not entirely at least.  The Google+ community is great place to learn and share info.

    - And this past week there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Folks Go to today in iOS dot com slash community to join in.

And thanks to all 1300+ of you already in the community and contributing.

    Into the email bag:

    Hi Rob,

I am a blind listener to your show.

I'm wondering if there is a way to get messages from the google plus community through email like a google group?

For the most part forums etcetera don't work particularly well with the speech software we use.

    Regards,

    Adam M

Thanks Adam - and Yes - absolutely - you can set it up to get an email each time there is a new subject post.  And if you reply to one of the posts with a comment - then you also get emails for all of the follow up comments for that individual post.  Just turn on Notifications and you will get those emails. And if you belong to any other iPhone or iOS google+ communities - you will really appreciate the value of the posts in our community.  It really makes a difference when there are no Android Fan boys.

    Hi Rob

I noticed that videos on the Tii Google+ page appear to autoplay. Do you know is there a way to disable this as I would like to be able to access the page on a cellular connection without worrying about my data plan being eaten into.

    Regards

Steve - of course they do - it is Google.  Actually I am not sure if that is a google+ issue or the person that embedded it issue - if anyone knows the answer let me know - I also hate autostart videos - and If this is something we can control - I will let people know they need to turn off auto play - folks shoot me an email on this one - today in iOS at gmail dot com

Thanks to Missi from Ohio for the heads up on the Verizon Trade in offer where they are giving $200 for an iPhone 4 and up.  Yes - $200 for an iPhone 4.  That is a really great deal.

This offer expires on Sept 30th and AT&T is now also making the same offer - look for the link in the show notes titled Don't panic: Those iPhone 6 carrier trade-in deals are still available

Looks like T-mobile is also making this offer.

Again you must bring in your iPhone or complete the online request by September 30th - check out the link for more details.

    Thanks Missi from Ohio.

I know we are knee deep into iPhone 6's and iOS 8 - but rumors are starting to circulate that October 21st will be the next Apple event - which would be the iPad event essentially but maybe also the Apple TV event as well.

I have to imagine the iPhone 6+ will eat into iPad sales quite a bit. At least the mini Retina sales.

So maybe it is time Apple goes bigger on the iPad.

More on this I am sure on the next couple of episodes.

    Hi Rob

    What do you think?

    Steve from AZ

This is per the post titled iPhone 6 production by the numbers 100 production lines - 200,000 workers, 540,000 phones a day.

Per the 540,000 number quote“We have been churning out 140,000 iPhone 6 Plus and 400,000 iPhone 6 every day, the highest daily output ever, but the volume is still not enough to meet the preorders,” said a person familiar with the matter …unquote

Nothing sounds that shocking Steve.  Apples best quarter to day was the year ago Calendar 4th quarter with 51 mil iPhones sold or 560,000 iPhones sold a day.

This 540,000 number if anything sounds a little low.

Will be interesting to see how long before apple gets to supply balance on the iPhone 6+ - which seems to be the one right now in shortest supply.

One rumor - I will go over on the next episode or the one after - is that Apple is shutting down the Beats streaming service - If true - I can't say I am shocked.  Again - more on this one when it is more than just a rumor.

This is a very nice message from Apple laying out their privacy policy and philosophy for you.  But here is the part I liked and what stands Apple out from Google and others

    Quote

Our business model is very straightforward: We sell great products. We don’t build a profile based on your email content or web browsing habits to sell to advertisers. We don’t “monetize” the information you store on your iPhone or in iCloud. And we don’t read your email or your messages to get information to market to you. Our software and services are designed to make our devices better. Plain and simple.

    security/many-android-devices-vulnerable-to-session-

    hijacking-through-the-default-browser.html

Thanks to Tom D for the heads up on this next one.

Seems that the default browser in Android versions older than 4.4  or put another way the default browser for over 75% of Android users - has a little problem.  It has a major vulnerability that allows malicious websites to get around critical security features in Android and take control of the users authenticated sessions on other sites.  He he - they said Android and security feature in the same sentence.

So what this means is Android users that have multiple browser windows open - if they hit hackers website - they could look into your other open windows - say webmail or banking info and then get access to all your info.  Sweet.  Again this just affects only 75% of Android users and only those using the default browser - oh snap - that is a a lot of android users affected.

And of course there was front page news about this additional security issue for Android - ummm No.

My only guess to why very minor or obscure iOS security issues or potential issues get front page news and Major Android security issues do not - is that the tech press just accepts Android is not as secure - but they demand iOS to be secure.

There was a pretty good article in Network world that wrapped up the summer of discontent for Android Security - In the article they go over some of the issues that came out this summer.  Like Blackphone credential Hijack, A report that came out finding Major Android apps failing at basic security, The Koler Ransomware on Porn sites, FakeID issue, The Selfmite and Samsapo.A self-replicating text message worms, and TowelRoot - if you want to learn more about these Security issues for Android - look for the link titled Browser Vulnerability caps rough few months for Android Security in the show notes for ep 322 - or you can just sit back and relax knowing you made the secure choice when you choose iOS.  Just Sayin.

Dooohh - Yes the Tii App and iOS 8 do not like each other.  The Open in iBooks and other apps option is borked in iOS 8 for the Tii App.  So right now if you wanted that PDF to print out on tips for better battery life - you will need to email me today in iOS At gmail dot com and I will send it to you.  Devs are looking into this.

    Hi Rob,

I am going to do a little warning here - this has to do with third party USB cables and MacBooks - I had a 3rd party USB cable - and an official one both plugged into my Macbook on Sunday night - and I was charging my wifes iPad mini retina and my iPhone 6+ - when I noticed the iPhone 6+ was not showing up on the computer - it was connected with the third party USB to lightening cable - so I switched them around and poof - my Mac book went dead - I mean it looked like dead and unlike the lord not coming back dead.  The green / amber light on the mag safe charger was not showing up at all.  First I actually thought the outlet tripped - but checked it and all was ok - then thought it was the power cord so tried my other one and same thing no light at all.  Start reading on line - and found out that 3rd party USB cords can do this to MacBook Pros - and some say it will fry your logic board or so they were told by repair shops. Others suggest SMC resets and bypass - which I tried and nothing.  Finally I opened it up and decided to try disconnecting the battery from the macbook main board and then connect the power cord - and that shocked it back to life.  So luckily I was able to recover from this.  But I want to warn you about 3rd party USB to lightening cords and not to connect them to MacBook Pros - especially 2011 and 2012 model years - and reading on line it seemed to be for lots of mac books.  So best if you get a 3rd party USB cord - just use it with chargers and do not plug it into your Macbook pro or air for that matter. But if you do get that issue I had remember to disconnect the battery and then connect the power cord while the batter is disconnected to revive it.

    Rob,

I'd like to make a comment regarding the suggestion from a few of your listeners, that smaller capacity devices are fine these days because we now have iTunes Match and iCloud to access our music etc.

I'm not sure about other countries but here in Australia, data costs are not cheap so having mega-gigs of music in the cloud does nothing for  us.

Please acknowledge that your show goes global so your listenership is as well.

While on the subject, referring to dates by seasons like "...due in early fall..." tells us nothing down under! (Apple is guilty) Why not  just mention a month, that's much more global.

I do like your show and have been listening on and off for years. I find it a little long however, so when unlistened shows pile up I tend to listen to the latest and scrap the rest.

Thanks for listening to my rant.

For anyone selling or giving away their old iPhone - ABC News has an article on what you need to do before giving or selling said iPhone.

And in a nut shell - it is to wipe that puppy clean.

of course first make sure you back everything up to your computer and or iCloud account.

Next wipe it clean.  First step is to go to find my iPhone and turn it off.

Then go to Setting --> General --> Reset --> Erase All Content and Settings

Then you know do it again - then you can sell / give it away.

    Hey Rob,

I was able to install iOS8 last week in the middle of the night with no issues. Worked swimmingly. But I've run into a few issues with iTunes Radio since the update. When I'm listening to it, it'll start to skip like its a CD. Very strange. And on my iPhone 5S, it seems like the play/pause button on the lock screen shrunk to the size of a kernel of corn. It's near impossible to press the first time round. As I listen primarily in the car over Bluetooth, it's very frustrating.

On to the things I like the most. I love the widgets in the Notification Center. I currently have the weather channel and Sky Guide in there. It's awesome being able to pull down the menu and quickly being able to see the weather and when the moon and planets are visible.

Siri has also gotten pretty nifty. If I have my phone plugged in while at work, I can quickly say, "hey Siri, text my wife How's the daughter doing?" And it'll send it off. Pretty cool.

And finally, being able to use Touch ID to make purchases on Amazon and to unlock One Password is another great feature.

I'm sure I'll write in again when I discover some more cool things.

    Keep up the great work,

    Alex from Connecticut

    Rob,

Thanks for the timely push notification, I was backing up my phone in preparation of downloading the new operating system.

Interesting Post from the site - StreamingMediablog.com - where they went over what went wrong with Apples Streaming or attempt there of - event on 9/9

The author looked into what caused the issues - and no it was not a capacity issue - well not as the main reason for issues - but rather it was how Apple set up the page for the stream.

Seems - Apple decided to add some Javascript code to the Apple.com page which is what drove the live update of Tweets below the video.  However it seems Apple screwed the pooch on this when their code wound up causing the page to make a refresh call every few millisecond.  Dooohhh.  This essentially made the site uncache-able.  He goes into some other issues - but the summary is this

Quote - The bottom line with this event is that the encoding, translation, JavaScript code, the video player, the call to S3 single storage location and the millisecond refreshes all didn’t work properly together and was the root cause of Apple’s failed attempt to make the live stream work without any problems. unquote

The good news in all this - is these are mistakes in set ups of the page - not that too many people were hitting the stream at the same time - and that is good news in that for the likely October event - Apple should have fixed these issues - and the stream should go much better - well in Theory at least.

That may also mean that this weeks Update to iOS 8 may not be as bad as I feared on the last episode.  But hey not as bad - does not mean good either.

Will be interesting to see how that October event goes - again if there is an October event.

And no that all does not cover the issue for the first 30 minutes with a women speaking in Chinese - that was likely just a human error in picking the wrong feed.

So yes - lots of issues for that event - hopefully for October it is smooth sailing.

Last week we saw some great activity in our Google+ community of which,

We are now well over 1,300 members and growing.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new popular post in the G+ community this past week came from -

Me again - but not really - it was just a post I pinned to the top of the board asking people to put in info on their pre-order status.  This was a quick and easy way for people up on the 12th to see what others were experiencing during the pre-order kick off.

At last count there were 69 comments on that post.  The beginning of which is from Ken Clarke - saying quote it is 3:04 ET and the store is still down.  And yeah that was a common theme and experience for most.  Those posting early about getting an order in - were initially placing those orders on the Carriers site. Others finally getting orders in with the Apple Store App on their iOS device - as long as it was updated to the latest version.  If you want to read about frustration read a lot of those comments from the first night.  Go back to September 12th to find that post as I will likely un-pin it once this episode is released.  Thanks to all that participated in the Google+ community.  And just think 69+ comments - and not a single Android Troll among them.

    Hi Rob,

With regards to the numbers reported for pre-orders You know what amazes me more? Unlike last year, they did this without preorders to China. Wow. I got my iPhone 6 64GB grey at 5:00 AM PST, no web problems at all an Apple's site. -- Steve San Pedro, Ca.

And Steve was one of the lucky ones - most people did actually report issues - Yeah - if you thought the streaming event was frustrating - try being online at 3:00 AM ET and trying to order a new iPhone 6 or 6+ -  well here is some of the feedback from users trying to pre-order:

    Hi Rob,

I bought the silver 64 GB iPhone 6 Plus at 12:15am on the 12th. Like everyone else I was bummed about the Apple Store being down. I went to Twitter to see thousands of tweets about it, but many of us just went over to our carrier's websites and ordered our iPhones there instead. I went to the Verizon site and was asleep by 12:30. I'd prefer to buy directly from Apple, but I was tired.

Wasn't it expected to hear all the Apple bashing the next morning about their technical glitches? Yet, with all their "problems," Apple blew away all previous records. I hope Apple breaks down how many people bought the iPhone 6 vs the iPhone 6 Plus, but I doubt it. As an AAPL investor, I am excited about Apple having these two larger models. I am hoping that Apple renames the "5C" and calls it the "iPhone Mini."

    6-and-6-plus-pre-orders-in-opening-24-hours/

So with all the issues of people not being able to pre-order the device they want initially because the site was down.  Was it a situation where nobody was able to order an iPhone because everyone was ordering an iPhone.  Well kinda.  Apple actually released their preorder numbers and this was just for the first 24hours of sales of which the website was down for close to 4 of those 24 hours.

And the number was 4 Million iPhone 6 and 6+ pre-orders. Or as Apple said in a 3rd person PR post quote Apple® today announced a record number of first day pre-orders of iPhone® 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, with over four million in the first 24 hours. Demand for the new iPhones exceeds the initial pre-order supply and while a significant amount will be delivered to customers beginning on Friday and throughout September, many iPhone pre-orders are scheduled to be delivered in October. Additional supply of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will be available to walk-in customers on Friday, September 19 at 8:00 a.m. local time at Apple retail stores. Customers are encouraged to arrive early or order online from the Apple Online Store(www.apple.com) to pickup in-store or receive an estimated delivery date. Both models will also be available on Friday from AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, additional carriers and select Apple Authorized Resellers. unquote

So I do find it interesting there was no mention of November deliveries - which is something I am hearing from quite a few people.  Especially for the iPhone 6+'s

So if you did not order yet - you may still have a chance on Friday morning to get your iPhone 6 or 6+ - but note if you go to your local carrier to get an iPhone 6 or 6+ don't be surprised to find they just have 16GB versions - at least that is what I am hearing from T-mobile.

Apple also said in the press release which countries are getting the iPhone on Sept 19th and 26th.

it is the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK beginning this Friday, September 19

Then the iPhone 6 and 6+ will be available  in more than 20 additional countries beginning on Friday, September 26 including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey and United Arab Emirates

As always if you are going and waiting on line - please call into the show with your line waiting stories.

Per the status of ship times from the Apple store - All iPhone 6 configs for all carriers in the US are showing 7 to 10 business days for shipping.  For the iPhone 6+ - it is 3 to 4 weeks for all configurations and carriers.

Again - others are reporting delivery dates between November 3rd and November 26th.  So basically some time in November before Thanksgiving. Nice tight range there.

    PLAY VOICEMAIL - JODI_FEEDBACK_PREORDER_vs_Online

Jodi - There is no way Apple could possible build up for the demand that is in place - because it is unlike anything else in the world  -  4 Million iPhones ordered in 24 hours.   To bring sammy into this is a joke - they don't get orders on a per family basis anywhere close - Heck the 2nd Calendar month and first full calendar month the Galaxy S5 was out - the iPhone 5C out sold it.  But Sammy also announces their products many months in advance.

    Really there is no comparison.

That apple is able to ship as many iPhones as they do and have and will - is amazing and that is where Tim Cook shines - do I wish on Friday that everyone that wanted an iPhone could have one - sure - but that has only ever happened one time with an iOS launch - and that was for the original iPad.  The next day you could walk into an Apple store and buy one.  Then word spread and Apple went into supply constraint with in a week that lasted for months.

I am sorry you may not have an iPhone on Friday - but you could always try waiting in line - and FYI - us long time line waiters were pretty upset when the lazy pre-orders were able to get product for some past launches and we could not.  The Line waiters are the heart and soul of the Apple Kool Aid drinkers.  So don't be dissing Apple for trying to get the line waiters some phones.

    Hi Rob,

Please let listeners know about this

    Regards,

    Jose

Thanks Jose for the heads up on this - with this being a post on 9 to 5 mac going over how apple will change some things for those of you waiting in line this year.

Essentially Apple is replacing the Physical card system they used the past few launches - where they went down the line in the morning close to 8:00 AM and handed out cards for the type device you wanted - so you kinda knew if the device you were waiting for was going to be there for you.  Then you stayed in line and waited until it was your turn.

Now they will do a virtual ticket that they send you via SMS or email - and then you can get out of line if you want and come back any time during the day to get your device.

So if you are in line at 7:45 AM and get your virtual ticket in theory you should be able to leave at that point drive into work - work all day and then hit the Apple store up on the way home and pick up your iPhone.

Again this is all in theory - we shall see how it works out in reality come Friday.

Also this is all based on leaked training materials - so grain of salt this one we shall take.

Thanks go out to our new sponsor and that is NextWorth dot com - where if you use the promo code t i i - you will get a 10% bonus on any iPhone trade-ins.

Nextworth sent me over some interesting stats showing the number of trade ins around each launch.  And there is always a big step increase from an S release to a new form factor release.  There was a 116% increase from the 3S launch to the 4 launch,  a 99% increase from the 4S launch to the 5 launch - and they are expecting another 100% or so increase from the 5s launch to the 6 and 6+ launch.

What they also showed is the average selling price of old devices in September vs October, november and december.  In a nut shell - there is a big drop in prices in October and November with prices flattening out in December.  Point is Prices are going to keep dropping form here on out so go to nextworth.com now - and get your price locked in for the next 30 days.

That's right Nextworth locks you in to today's price for 30 days meaning - when your new shiny iPhone 6 or 6+ finally arrives you get today's price - not a price 10 to 25% less come 30 days from now - based on past years trends.  But the price from today.

And as a Tii listener - you get a 10% bonus added to your offer price on your iPhone when you use the promo code T i i - but you do need to use this promo code between now and October 15th.

Using their service is simple and painless and can be done from your home - even the printing of a pre-paid UPS shipping label is automatically generated for you so you can send your iPhone or other device at no cost to you.  And with Nextworth you are dealing with a company that since 2006 has had an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.  So don't worry about some guy you met on line to sell your iPhone to - trying to rob you in a parking lot - just get your offer now - and with in the next 30 days ship off your iPhone from the safety and comfort of your home.

And once again using the promo code tii at nextworth dot com will get you a 10% bonus for your iPhone trade in when you lock in that price between now and October 15th.  Thank Nextworth for sponsoring this show.

Ok - lets talk the iOS 8 update that is launching today.  When it is launching probably already by the time you hear this.  And here are my instructions on how to minimize issues when updating.

First As I have said many many times - it is HIGHLY recommended you wait until the new update to iOS is out at least a week and you hear what we are saying about it on Today in iOS podcast before doing the following steps.

That is true for .x.x updates - more true of .x updates and really really really true for Whole number updates.  On top of that I have been using the GM since the end of last week - and I am still getting crashes on it.  Some of the bugs in the beta 5 with regards to Stock apps crashing like the Podcasts App, The Stocks App and Safari have not gone away.

I was surprised to see the GM date for the ISPW file to be August 19th.  That is two weeks and a day after Beta 5 came out and when Beta 6 should have been released.  At least from my trials of the GM - and the crashes I am seeing - I think there is going to be some bad PR around the release of iOS 8.0.  At least for me iOS 8.0 seems more flakey than iOS 7.0 did at GM.  Please wait a week to hear how it is going for the masses or really just wait for iOS 8.0.1 which really is not going to be that far off.

If you are someone that likes when things just work with no issues - do not update right away.  If you have ever folded a pair of underwear or can’t stand if the toilet paper roll is hung wrong or for that matter think there is a right or wrong way to hang it - then you are not the person that should be updating right away.

If you rely on your iOS device for work and for some specific 3rd party apps - WAIT.  Wait until you hear if there are issues with the latest update and specifically for your most used 3rd party apps.

But beyond the bugs When an iOS update is first made available - during the first few days 100’s of millions of users will start trying to download that update - Apples servers have shown considerable strain for each major and even minor update in the past. There is no bonus or plus to be one of the first to update - Other than being able to right a blog post about how frustrated you are about the new update - Again my recommendation is to WAIT.

Obviously if you Jailbreak - you need to wait - that goes almost with out mention.  But Mention I will.  It could be sometime in 2015 before we see a jailbreak for iOS 8 - if the past two major whole number updates are any indications.

All right with my warnings aside and my ability to point back to this section to say - see I am not a blind Apple sheep slash Apple fan boy slash kool aid drinker.

There are some of you that will not listen to my advice - through caution to the wind and jump in with eyes closed.  For you or for those hearing this after iOS 8.0.1 comes out - here is my recommended procedure for doing the update to help minimize your chances of having issues.  Of course I am guessing if you don't listen and do the update on September 17th you probably are not patient enough to do these steps - and that is too bad - for some of you that ignore these recommendations and just update right away - I look forward to those emails I get with every update that say Rob you were right I should have waited and / or followed your instructions.

Hey if I delay going over these instructions any longer iOs 8.0.1 will be out already.

Ok here is the really quick list.

Step 1 - Sync Photos off of iOS device

Step 2 - Update all Apps

Step 3 - Force quit All open Apps

    Step 4 - Back-up / Sync / Back-up to Computer / iCloud

Step 5 - Reset Network Settings / Reboot

Step 6 - Update to new Version of iOS

Note - If you need your iOS device for work - you are best to do the update on a Friday evening or whatever day is the end of your work week.  This way if there are issues - you have time to get your iOS device working again.

Alright now here is the more detailed break down of the steps.

    1. Sync your photos over to where you manage your photos.  If on a mac that usually is iPhoto - make sure you get all your photos and videos over to where you manage them.  I also recommend you delete them off your iOS device as well.   Then this is important go back to your iOS device and make sure they were removed.  NOTE - Burst photos do not seem to sync up to iPhoto - so make sure you go through your Burst photos and pick the best photos and delete the others.  If you back up to iCloud or another cloud service confirm your latest photos are all sync’d up.  There is nothing worse than loosing photos - and while it is not likely your device will be bricked in the update - there is really no reason to take the chance - Sync your photos and videos to where you manage them and confirm they are all there.

    2. Update Apps on your iOS device - connected to Wifi - Update all your apps from inside the App store App.  For any key 3rd party apps you use all the time - go ahead and launch them to make sure they are working fine now.  This way if after the update  they are not working you know it is the update that is the issue and those apps need to be updated again to work with the new version.

    3. Force quit all your open apps.  Double tap on the home button to get to the app selector and then force quit / close out all the open apps on your iOS device.

    4. With your iOS device connected to your computer or via iCloud - back-up your iOS device.  Then if connected to a computer sync your iOS device - and then do one more back-up.   If you are asked about backing-up apps to your computer that are on your iOS device but not on your computer - do so.  Same for Transferring Purchases on your iOS device that are not on your computer.

    5. Go to the Settings App --> General --> Reset  and tap on “Reset Network Settings”.  This will reboot your iOS device.  Once it is rebooted - go to Settings App - and select your Wifi network - and if it has a password you will need to re-enter it.

    6. Update to the new version of iOS.

Ok - if you go into the free Tii App and look at the post between Ep 320 and Ep 321 - you will see those instructions and some of the warnings in a PDF document.  I wrote those to be more generic for any update.

Here is a question on the update:

    Hi Rob,

I was listening to item 320 while mowing yesterday and specifically took note about your advice to wait around a week before updating to iOS 8.  How would you feel about performing the update using iTunes?  My thinking is that iTunes would fully download iOS 8 to the PC/MacBook first and then apply the update.  Like you I am not putting a lot of faith in Apple's new servers being able to effectively push these updates out without problems.

Also, I have to ask the question.  Not knowing very much about the architecture of iOS, do you think that iOS can become corrupted or modified by 3rd party apps released by Apple?  Of course this being on non-jail broken iPhones/iPads.  I was always under the impression that iOS was designed to be very secure and that the code should remain locked?  I ask this in part because of experiencing what reloading an iPad and iPhone both using iTunes did to those devices.  It really brought back life to my iPad 2 and fully cleared the storage I had lost over time on that device.  This is something that I do on Windows based computers when the OS has been compromised from the ill affects of viruses or malware.  Just want your honest opinion on this.

    Regards,

    Marshall M

    Hi Marshall -

I would say without a doubt if you can you want to do the download to iTunes on your computer first.  The Download only option - not the download and update option.  I would stay far away for Over the Air updates if they are available.  Yes - Download to iTunes First.

Per the second part about iOS being modified corrupted by 3rd party apps - well it is not malware or viruses - but there are settings that get changed and some apps taking up mystery space on the device.  So when ever you can actually do a full factory restore - that does seems to improve the overall performance of the device.  This is especially true for older devices just barely still covered like the 3rd gen iPad's and iPhone 4S's - if you can do full restores if you want to optimize speed of those devices.

But to answer the question if 3rd party apps are corrupting iOS - I am not sure if that is an accurate way to say it - but if you ask do some 3rd party apps cause conflicts over time - well I do believe iOS is pretty robust - and over time iOS performs much much better than Android.  But there are definitely reports from a small % of users of conflicts - just like you are reporting where a full restore helped out. Is it an issue of Viruses and Malware - well there is no evidence of that - and Android and the Press would be all over that like a duck on cheetoo if that was the case.

And Marshall also added this comment

Let me also follow up with that fact that I did not restore anything to the device, but instead chose to reconfigure and reinstall apps manually.  It was my way of making sure everything installed cleanly.  Some of this was in part from listening to yours and others comments in past episodes.  Many thanks Rob.

Note - individual apps get corrupted all the time - the more complex the app the more likely you are to find that individual 3rd party app is corrupted - usually something to do with a data base issue with the app - and deleting and re-installing that app sometimes is the only way to fix that individual 3rd party app.  That is not an issue of iOS - but more around the design of the app and how it makes network calls for info for that database.  Most apps do not have this issue - it is just a small % of apps.  when I say more likely - what I really mean is 0.2% likely vs say 0.1% likely to have an issue.

    42:01

Ok for those that have updated to iOS 8 - what are some of the things you need to optimize on your iPhone for the best battery life? You may ask.

Well I am glad you asked.

Here are some battery Saving tips for iOS 8 plus some from last years iOS 7 tips that still hold true today.

But first lets talk about one of my favorite new features in iOS 8 - especially with regards to Battery usage - and that is you can now see what Apps are using what percentage of your battery usage.

It tells you the % of battery used by different apps in the last 24 hours and last 7 days.  For example 41% went to the mail app, 21% to the podcasts app, 11% to the home & Lock screen,  It does not show usage when charging - just battery usage when well using the battery.

To get to this go to

Settings --> General --> Usage --> Battery Usage

and then you will see your list of apps most draining your battery.

Oh hey speaking of the Battery and there is the Battery % indicator - I have had more than a few people ask about that.  To turn on or off the %  for the battery - go to

    Settings --> General --> Usage

Then turn ON - "Battery Percentage"

Per new features in iOS 8 that I felt were potential battery drainers they are:

    1. There is now a toggle for Enabling Handoff - this is where you continue using apps between all of your iCloud devices.  This is set ON by default - Battery saving tip - turn it off unless you plan on actually using that service.

Settings --> General --> Handoff & Suggest Apps

    Then turn OFF "Handoff"

    --------

    2. Also in the Handoff & Suggest Apps - there are toggles under Suggested Apps for My Apps and App Store - According to the description quote Show installed apps or App store suggestions for apps relevant to your current location on the lock screen and in the App switcher as your phones location services drains down your battery like 6 year old sucking down a capri sun juice pouch.  unquote - will except for maybe that last part.  Battery Saving hint - toggle them all off.

Settings --> General --> Handoff & Suggest Apps

Then turn OFF "My Apps" and turn OFF "App Store"

    ---------

    3. Another one for potential battery hoggishness - is under calendars Called Time Zone Override - by default it is set off.  From Apple Quote The Time Zone override always shows event dates and times in the selected time zone.  When off, events will display according to the time zone of your current location unquote.  Anytime I hear current location - I think battery drain.  So turn that one ON - again it was Time Zone Override.

Settings --> Mail, Contacts, Calendars  --> Time Zone Override

Then turn ON - Time Zone Override

    --------

4 Another new feature kinda iOS 8 there is now an option to to share App Analytics with App developers.  From Apple quote Help app developers improve their apps by allowing Apple to share crash data as well as statistics about how you use their apps with them unquote.  Now if you select this to be on - Extra data and battery usage you will have - and maybe you want to turn it off later on. If you want to change your initial choice go to

    Settings --> Privacy --> Diagnostic & usage

Then Turn OFF - Share with App Developers.

It looks to be an all or nothing share - as in share with all app devs or don't share at all.

    --------

    5. Not an iOS 8 tip new feature - but still one to help battery life - Also in the Diagnostic & Usage area - select Don't Send - this means less reports being sent to Apple - which means less network communication and checking for reports to send.

    Settings --> Privacy --> Diagnostic & usage

    Select - "Don't send"

    =============

The rest are tips from iOS 7 or earlier to help save batter life and still hold true:

6 - Turn Off Parallax - there are some that say this feature makes them motion sick - but really I just think they are looking at the battery % indicator and that is what is getting them sick.

Settings --> General --> Accessibility --> Reduct Motion

Then Turn ON - "Reduct Motion"

Yes turn it ON.  Turning ON Reduce Motion - turns OFF Parallax - Yes Clearly someone at APPLE is just Messing with our heads on that one.

    ---------

7 -  Turn off Airdrop - unless you plan on using it now or in the next few minutes - there is no need to have it on.  Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center - and just tap on Airdrop near the bottom left - to turn it off.

    ---------

8 - and while you have control center open - tap to turn off bluetooth.  Again unless you plan on using it right now - no need to have it on.  This obviously is not an option for anyone with a Pebble or other smart watch.

    ---------

9 - Also in the control center - turn down your brightness.  I find if you set it about a 1/3 of the full setting - it will still look great.

    ---------

10 - is to turn off background app refresh except for those apps you want that info for.  Go to

Settings --> General -->  Background App Refresh

and then turn OFF all those apps you don't need to update in background - like any games.  Or Yelp or Speed test apps  or games - Yeah no need for games updating in the background - I don't suggest shutting this down completely - as there are needs for apps like Mapquest or other navigation apps to keep updating with your location info. But the more you turn off the better it is for battery life.

    ---------

11 -  Turn off Auto App Updates.  Go to

Settings --> iTunes & App Store

then under automatic Downloads - Turn them all OFF.

Do you really need to have an update to an iBook happen automatically.

Please note - these choices are meant for those that want improved battery life - there will be tradeoffs with your experience - if app updates are not downloading or apps are not getting the most recent info in the background - that means - you will need to manually get that info / updates done later on.

    ---------

12 - Do not use Dynamic Wallpaper - Really - Why would you do that?   Go to

    Settings --> Wallpaper

and make sure you select a static wallpaper - not one of the dynamic wallpapers.  Oh and definitely not a panoramic Wallpaper either. I mean really do you have that much battery life you can just throw it away by putting up a panoramic view of your kid in on a soccer pitch as your wallpaper.

    ---------

13 - Turn off Push mail and auto fetching of mail.  Go to

Settings --> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -->  Fetch New Data

Then Turn OFF "Push" - and set iCloud and your mail accounts to FETCH - and finally scroll down set Fetch to MANUALLY.  This just means the next time you check your email - you need to pull down to refresh - i.e. fetch new mail.  You could also set that to hourly - but still if the purpose is to save battery life - just set it to manually.

    ---------

14 - Turn off notifications for those Apps you don't need notifications from.

    Settings --> Notifications

No need for Mail - after making it manual in the last step.  Plus no need for Photos or Game Center.  Go through your list of apps and only select the ones you want to see updated push messages from in the lock screen.  And deselect ones you don't need - like any game app.

    ---------

15 - Change Auto lock to 5 minutes or less.  For iPad's this one can be a pain - as if you are reading - it can lock on you too quickly So don't set for just 1 minute on an iPad.  But 1 Minute may be fine for an iPhone. To make changes on this one go to

    Settings --> General --> Auto-lock

and select 5 minutes or 1 Minute or something in between.

    ---------

16 - Quit Open apps in the background on a regular basis.  If you have 183 apps on your iOS device - there is no reason to have 182 of those apps open in the background.  To force quit an app - double tap on the home button - and then swipe up on the preview of the app - to close it.

    ---------

17 - Don't set Alarms or Reminders based on Location.  If you set up a reminder to remind you when you get home and it is 8:30 AM when you set up the reminder - that will mean it is constantly checking your location through out the day.  Well right up until your battery dies that is.

    ---------

18 - Location services - The ultimate battery killer - only allow it for those apps you absolutely need it for.  Games - NO - Maps - Yes.  And keep an eye out in the upper right for a purple triangle - that means locations services are on.  You can not turn it off completely - well ok - you can - but you should not - because if you did - it kinda sorta kills most features of find my iPhone like for simple location search. Note - even if off you can still reactivate by enabling lost mode - but still you want to have locations services on and you want to limit it to apps that benefit you.  Go to:

Settings --> Privacy --> location services

and look at what apps have locations toggled on.  You might be surprised.  Like Tunein Radio or Shazam or Stitcher or a bunch of games - Yeah turn it off for them.

    ---------

19 - Location Services - System Services.  Go to:

Settings --> Privacy --> Location services --> (Scroll down to) System Services

Then go through the list of items and turn OFF those that you do not need like:

    Compass Calibration

    Location Bases iAds

    Setting Time Zone

    Spotlight Suggestions

    "Frequent Locations"  - Turn OFF.

Then turn OFF all three items under "Product Improvement"

I know there are other tips about turning off LTE and even disabling keyboard clicks.  But come on whats the point of having an LTE iPhone if you can't use LTE.

If you do all the things I mentioned above - and your battery life sucks - you may have a corrupted app or corrupted backup you set up from or you may have a defective battery.  What you need to do in this  case to find out if it is software or hardware issue is to go to Settings App - then iCloud - then Find My iPhone - and disable Find My iPhone.  Next connect your iOS device to your computer and back it up.  Then Select Restore iPhone - this will delete out everything - and you should set it up as a brand new iPhone.  Not from a backup.  Note - this does suck to do - as it means getting emails and everything else set back up correctly.  But you made a back up so you can restore from it later on.  Just do this and then see if after a few hours if your battery life is better then it was or the same.  If it is the same - take said device to your local apple store and see about getting a new device.  If it is better - then you have to decide if you want to restore from the last back up - or just stay as you are and start the manual process of setting up the device.

if you go into the free Tii App and look at the post between Ep 320 and Ep 321 - you will see these tips as a PDF post - which you can then move to the iBook app and then print out.

I also had the constantly spinning

wheel to the right of LTE at the upper left of the screen.  It was driving me crazy.  I have an iPhone 5.

On a hunch, I closed all open apps and went to General, Reset, Reset Network Settings. After the phone restarted I signed back into Wifi.

    Problem solved!

    Hi Rob!

This relates to a caller on the last show about non stop spinning gear wheel on iPhone, something which happens to me too...

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5987770?start=45&tstart=0

A hard reset stops it for me, and there's a reasonable explanation on page two or three about a mistake in Apple's code which could be causing it.

    Best wishes, Roland

Hi rob. One of your callers was asking about the annoying spinning busy icon. Apart from turning iPhone off and on, I found the solution is to Reset Network Settings. That solved the problem for me.

    Hi Rob,

You mentioned that it would be most advantageous to buy a VZW iPhone for the most versatile use on a number of carriers?  Would it just be a matter of say swapping in an AT&T sim card in to this VZW CDMA phone?  Do you have the model# of this VZW phone?

What would be the downside to buying a T-Mobile device?  I think the T-Mobile devices are going to be sold at full retail price at launch instead of via carrier subsidized pricing.

Do you think one will be able to pre-order a VZW iPhone at full retail?  If no and say you pay the $199 I wonder what the ETF would be if you cancel right away, i.e.; will it be clost to the $649 retail?

It would be better if Apple offered the unlocked phones right away instead of later on as they usually do.

    Regards,

    Mika

    Hi Rob,

To answer Zack's question about disappearing apps after a second of them starting to download (asked in episode 320): Check your Restrictions!

I had restricted my daughters' iPod touches to download or watch PG-13 material only (apps and videos) and when I try to install apps with a higher rating, they just disappear.

Try disabling restrictions or just selecting a higher rating in that setting and see if the apps appear or just try to redownload them.

I would like to re-read an email I read on Ep 319 earlier this month prior to the Apple event.

    Hi Rob,

it's Brian here in Galway in Ireland.

Something that might be of interest to you and your listeners is that here in Ireland there are rumours that U2's new, long awaited album, will be released pre-loaded on the new iPhones, due to be announced next week.

Could be a coup for both.

    Regards,

    Brian M

Hi Brian - thanks for that rumor again - and you did get it mostly right -well kinda sorta around that part about pre-loading - just not the only new iPhones part.

And that leads us into what Eek the Cat would say - it never hurts to Help.  and that leads us into the free U2 album Apple gave away to 500 Million iTunes users - even if many of them did not want it.

Seems Apple did not just give you the opportunity to go and click download - they also said you know what if you have an iTunes account that is connected to iCloud and you have it set up to automatically download any purchases - well Apple went ahead and pushed the download of the album to you.  Again Never hurts to Help.

Well accept when people started complaining about getting this album pushed to their accounts with out their permission or request. Dooohhh.

So Apple has now responded with a page to help you remove said unasked for Album if you are one that is not a U2 fan.

From their site they say the following: Quote

If you would like U2’s Songs of Innocence removed from your iTunes music library and iTunes purchases, you can choose to have it removed. Once the album has been removed from your account, it will no longer be available for you to redownload as a previous purchase. If you later decide you want the album, you will need to get it again. The album is free to everyone until October 13, 2014 and will be available for purchase after that date.

Do you want to remove Songs of Innocence from your account?

    unquote

Then click the big REMOVE ALBUM button

Be grateful Tim cook is not a Slim Whitman fan - of course it would have been a little creepy getting him up on stage at the end of the Apple event - being he passed away in June 2013.

    iphone-6-plus-will-ship-with-less-available-disk-space-than-

    once-imagined

Thanks to Michael for this next one - which the author makes it out to be a bad thing on what apple is doing for the most part. I personally think it is a good thing. What the post is titled is iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+ will ship with less available storage space than you'd expect.

So how is having less storage a good thing you ask - well that missing storage space is being occupied by some Apps Apple will be installing on the 64 GB and 128 GB versions only prior to shipping them - and that is the free iWork and iLife apps - which are

iMovie, Garageband, keynote, pages, numbers, and iTunes U. FYI iPhoto is replaced in iOS 8 with the Photos app - which now has the editing features of iPhoto.

Why this is a good thing is these are apps that make the iOS devices better and now you don't need to download them - and if you want the space back - you just delete them.

For the 16 GB version - you  can just download the ones you want for free.

NOTE - these are not bloat ware apps - these are high quality - easy to use and fully functional apps that are not adware supported.

But still if you don't ever plan to use iTunes U or Garageband or one of the others - just delete them.  These are not native apps like the Podcasts App - which you can not delete.

    Hi Rob!

Some compromises are about physics, not cost, and I was delighted by the fact that Apple stayed with 8 million pixels in their iPhone 6 camera.  There is an unavoidable trade off between pixel size and light and color sensitivity, so more pixels on the same sensor, exposed to light from identical optics can produce an inferior picture. I think the presenter was unable to get into this without sounding like he was whining, but my guess is that Apple opted to listen to the engineers rather than the marketers on this.

I have always had shaky hands, and am frequently frustrated by good pictures ruined by my inability to hold the device still enough while the shutter is open. I'm happy to know that Apple has chosen to improve image processing speed, stability, color, and focus, instead of chasing a much less important metric.

Here is a nice, basic technical explanation of why Apple has done exactly the right thing by keeping pixel count low. (He's not talking about Apple, just why increasing pixels can be counter-productive).

    Love the show!

    Judd E

    Hey Rob,

I forgot to mention in my audio opinion of the camera how much I enjoy the slo-mo capabilities on my 5s, so the increased frames per second on the 6 are just gravy.

As a dad of boys, I thought you might enjoy this slo-mo explosion of a watermelon that my son & his friend did by wrapping hundreds of rubber bands around it. Funny to watch, but I am so impressed by the ability of the slo-mo to capture the watermelon splitting. Super cool toy for a super geeky gal! ;-)

On the last episode I said I was waiting a year before I upgrade my iPhone from the 5S to the likely 6S+

But after I recorded that episode - I had a chance to watch the keynote again - and then look more into the specs and features of the 6+ - and well I started wanting it more and more.  Then I got this voice mail

    PLAY VOICEMAIL - Fdbk_about_iphone6plus_and_me

and well it was thestraw that broke the camels back.

So I decided to pre-order the iPhone at 2:00 AM my time - but sadly the Apple store was not working for a few hours and the Apple store App did not have the T-mobile off phones listed.  I decided after running the numbers - that going to a family plan for two - and with T-mobile buying out my ETF - that going with T-mobile and getting an unlimited plan for me from them and a 3 GB plan for my wife - it just made sense.  I mean it is still over $1,000 for the iPhone 6+ 128 GB version once you factor in taxes.  But anyway - after trying for a couple of hours I threw in the towel - the next morning I went to the t-mobile store - and well they had a pretty long list of people interested in the 6 and 6+.  So they ordered for me - to which I have no idea what my delivery date will be - just that it is backordered.   If there is anyone listening from T-mobile that can help me out - please please please - pull some strings for me.

    1-4-ghz-dual-core-a8-1gb-ram/

There are a couple of items still not finalized on my Bingo card - which are the amount of RAM and the Clock speed.  Rumors leading up to the event indicated it would be either staying at 1GB of RAM or doubling to 2 GB of RAM.  And the clock speed could be anywhere from 1.3 GHZ to 2.1 GHz depending on the rumor.

So supposed Geekbench tests of a device that was supposed to be an iPhone 6 or 6+ is showing the RAM at 1GB and the clock speed at 1.4 GHz.

We shall see come Friday what the real clock speed and RAM are - but currently all rumors and speculation are leading to the 1GB of RAM and 1.4 GHZ being the real deal for the iPhone 6.  That said the iPhone 6's performance according to apple is still going to be much improved.

Anadtech did a big piece on the speculation of what is in the iPhone 6 and 6+ - but really - lets just wait to the next episode and not speculate at all.  I will be looking for posts with Benchmark tests as well - because I am very interested to see how much faster the 6 and 6+ are vs the 5S.

    predictions/

Lets give credit where credit is due.  Ming Chi_Kuo - back in Early April release a research note where he said this about the next iPhones.

There would be a 4.7" and 5.5" version - check and check.

    They would be 1334 x 750 pixels and 1920 x 1080 pixels - check and check.

The displays would be 326 and 401 ppi respectively - double check

They would have NFC - check.

They would be 6.5 to 7.0 mm thick - pretty much double check.  the 6+ is 7.1 mm thick.

He expect the rear camera to stay at 8 MP and f2.2 aperture - check and check.

he said there would be the adoption of optical image stabilization - check.

    Pretty good predictions.

He did miss a little though.

He did not predict 128 gb versions - saying 64 gb would be max.

And that only the 64 GB version of the 5.5" version would have sapphire

And that the 5.5 inch would not roll out until later in the 4th quarter.

So not perfect - but still better then pretty much everyone else.

Kudos Mr. Ming Chi-Kuo with KGI Securities.

Thanks to Tom D for this next one which is a link to an article in Linked in from Jason Calacanis - who is a popular blogger and entrepreneur and angle investor.

And he wrote a post after the 9/9 even that is titled - Apple knocks it out of the park - will be first Trillion dollar company.

So he is saying that Apple will go from today's market cap of around 600 Billion to over 1 Trillion dollars - I hope he is accurate and I hope it happens sooner rather than later as that is over a 1.6 x uptake in Apple stock.

He bases his optimistic appraisal of Apple stock based on these factors.  Apple pay will add 100 Billion in Market Cap,   Apple Watch will add another 100 Billion in Market Cap.  He was happy to see apple finally come out with larger iPhones, And Apple looks to be adding Path.com to its fold.  As the found of Path was in the first row of the Apple event.  Which means Apple is looking to push back into Social media once again.  Hopefully it works out better for them this time around.

    with-apple-pay

The Financial time is reporting that Apple will be getting 0.15% of each purchase run through Apple Pay.  That is 15 cents for every $100 spent - which to me does not sound like a big number but I am told there will eventually be billions and billions of dollars running through Apple Pay And then it actually starts adding up to some real money or so I am told.  But really - It would take $100 Billion in sales to generate for Apple 150 Million in revenue for Apple - Even is 10% of All Shopping in the US was done via Apple Pay - which is well ridiculously high - That would still just be 1.5 Billion in revenue for the Year or around 1% of All of Apples revenue basically a rounding error at best.  So sadly not seeing how Apple Pay adds 100 Billion to Apples market cap.  Not unless you are looking at the Lock in to the ecosystem.

    Hello Rob:

I took your advice and ordered a shave set from Harrys.com, thanks for the $5.00 bucks. In your Tuesday item 0320 where you suggest getting the max memory when purchasing the new iPhone 6’s. As a long time Apple Fan guy it was surprised as most of the apps on my iPhone are mostly taking space and resources, thus they get deleted and stored in the cloud until I needed and since advent of  iTunes match launch I am using half and never more than 3/4 of my memory on my iPhone 5.  I guess I could see this on the iPad as I tend to play more videos, music and functional music apps, games etc.

What are you seeing in future use that would warrant the extra memory purchase. I feel 64 Gb is a lot of memory how say you Rob! Btw, awesome rebuild of the app and website!

    Hi Rob,

I'm currently using an iPhone 5 and I'm due for the upgrade to the 6 but I have NO IDEA whether I should get the 4.7" or the 5.5" models. All the tech experts on the podcasts I listen to (ex: MacBreak Weekly) are all going for the 5.5". Is bigger better?  For what it's worth, I also own a Galaxy Note II and never was too crazy about the size...always thought it was a bit large but of course, Apple's big phone design is more elegant than Samsung's so I'm not sure if that's a fair comparison.

Oh, I'm so confused, Rob. I don't know which size to get!  What are you getting???

    Thanks,

    Hi Rob

I was watching my cousin do some cleaning because she has an iPhone 5s 16 gig and I realized that it would be really nice to have an app that can tell you what your most recently accessed apps have been, so that way it would make cleaning up your apps that you don't use a little bit easier.

would you or any of your listeners happen to know of an app that would actually allow us to do this?

Tracy - I am happy to mention again one of my favorite features with iOS 8 - that is looking at the % of battery usage for your apps - if you look over the past 7 days it will give you a good idea of which apps you use most.

To get to that again - Go to

Settings --> General --> Usage --> Battery Usage

Then look under the 7 day usage to get a feel for your favorite and most used apps.

    6-launch-sprint-introduces-new-iphone-for-life-plan

Hi Rob A lot of phone companies offer replacing the phone after 12 and 18 months or they offer a 2yr contract. Which way do you recommend going? My wife and I typically keep our phones for 2 years but that was because of the contract we used to have. I prefer to replace my phone earlier but haven't because of the contract. Currently we are with AT&T and our contract is up. I am willing to move companies but want to get the best price. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks, Andy

Hi Andy - and one of those plans is Sprints new iPhone for life plan.

Most if not all of these plans that allow you to update each year - also require you to turn in your old iOS device to get the new one - so you really are leasing the phones.  Sprint actually even calls it a lease.

Pricing for the Sprint plan - is $50 a month for their unlimited plan plus $20 a month for the lease.

That means for $70 a month on Sprint you get unlimited Plan plus a new iPhone not each year but every other year - so unlike AT&T's Next plan - with Sprint it is still a two year upgrade cycle. But you must turn in the iPhone - so you do not own it.

I personally like to own and keep my devices - so these plans are not attractive to me at all.

The way the Next 12 plan from AT&T works - is you take the price of the iPhone you want and divide it by 20 and then pay that amount each month.  After 12 months - you can then upgrade to the latest iPhone by turning in the year old iPhone.  Which if you are getting the iPhone 6 - means you will be paying $569.40 towards the 949 price tag in the first 12 months - and have nothing to show for it.

I say if you want to upgrade each year - go with T-mobie - buy the phone outright - and save money on their data plans.  Then sell off your year old phone each year to help pay for the new Phone.  That is where today's sponsor helps out - quick reminder to go to nextworth.com and use promo code - t i i - to get a 10% boost on their listed price for your iOS device.

    mixes-up-cities/

Thanks to Kevin for the heads up on this next one. Which is About Apple and a Map and lots of funny errors - well unless you are a geography teacher in Canada - then it was a sad little Map.  Apple put up a map that helped buyers of the iPhone 6 and 6+ in Canada find out when their new iPhone would be delivered.

They did this by creating a map of Canada and then labeling the cities.  Accept they called Toronto Ottawa and Ottawa Toronto.  They had Edmonton in the wrong place,  Quebec City was just labeled at Quebec and other errors.  Dooohhh

Clearly Apple people need to download the App - Stack the countries and brush up on some geography outside the US.

    Hi Rob,

I can't find out when we are able to purchase the new iCloud pricing, and do you think this will be enough to compensate for buying a 16gb iPhone 6?

    Regards,

    Aaron

Hi Aaron - while iCloud is great for storing photos and documents in the cloud.

If you are an App addict - then 16 GB will go really really fast.

If you shoot lots of video - 16 GB will go quickly as well - especially if you plan on being off the grid.  ie - out in nature shooting video.  You can go through 16 GB really quickly with video recording and / or lots of apps.

App size is getting larger and larger as devs add additional images to match with new screen sizes.  Some devs will update their apps for optimized artwork for each device - that means apps will continue to get larger over all - Universal Apps were bad enough already - now they will get really big from the artwork Devs will want to add to make apps look the best possible for each device.  Granted some app devs will not do this - but many will.   Having your app as one of the first ones in your category truly optimized for the iPhone 6 and 6+ plus all other iOS devices - lands you a good shot of being featured by Apple.

    Hi Rob,

Do u think the apple watch will get on a approximately 12 month cycle?

    Regards,

    Michael

Well Michael - It will Probably be on some sort of cycle - but not sure how often.

I head rumors that the internals are meant to be replaced - so that in the future you could take your Apple Watch into an Apple store and for some fee - they would replace the Battery and Internal Circuits.  Not sure if that is just for the Apple Watch Edition or for all Apple Watch Models.

I am sure there will be a lot more about this as we get closer to the launch of the Apple Watch.  But it is possible the Apple Watch as is goes 2 years or more before the 2nd gen version is released.

    Hi Rob I was wondering

If Can you get a free replacement for iPhone 5  charger  under warranty

    Sincerely Zachary S

Hi Zachary - Yes - you should be able to get any thing that came in the iPhone box replaced including the ear buds - as long as they are still under warranty.

Thanks to All that sent in emails about the Apple Watch and Right Wrist usage.  and by All I mean all as in - Tommy P, Jernell R, Alberto J, Michael, Paul G, Stephen W, Kirby in PA, Aaron McV, Gulzar, Tash and a few others.

Seems that Apple does have a Right wrist mode - where it rotates the screen 180 degrees - this was shown to some of the attendees after the event.  The Digital Crown in that orientation is in the lower left rather than the upper right - that might actually be easy to use in the orientation.

Some articles said people should stop freaking out about this issue or stop spreading false reports about this - but to be fair to all that had issues / questions about this - there is NOT a single picture on Apple.com of any one wearing the Apple Watch on their Right wrist and there was not a single frame of any videos on the Apple site showing it on a right wrist - and there was not a single word mentioned on the site or during the keynote - that would indicate there is a Right Wrist mode where the screen flips 180 degrees.  Again this has been confirmed that there is a set up for Right Wrist - i.e. Lefthanders use by those at the after event.  But sure would be nice if Apple you know - put something up on their site about that option - it really would not take up much space - just a single sentence or two at the most and one picture - with the picture being optional - is all we lefties ask.

Rob, I’m part way though listening to the most recent podcast and you mentioned the Apple Watch displays being made out of sapphire. You also mentioned the iPhone 6 display not being made of sapphire. Actually, not all versions of the watch use sapphire. The sport model uses strengthened Ion-X glass - the same as the iPhone 6. I believe I read Apple did not use sapphire in the sport watch because they wanted to reduce weight. Perhaps the same is true for the iPhone 6 or perhaps they just don’t have enough sapphire supply at this point. —Mark

Thanks Mark - I missed that little foot mark at the bottom of the Apple Watch Technology page that says quote

    1. Sport models have a composite back and Ion-X glass lenses.

    unquote

So yeah - I think we now know the version that is going to be $349 - the Apple Watch Sport Models look to be the entry level device.  Pricing for the different models and straps will be very interesting - wondering how high a Price Point Apple will go.

I have seen some suggest $1,999 for the top end device - I would not be surprised to  see $2,999 for a top end Watch.

After All they have laptops at that price point already.

    more-details-and-hands-on-97091024129.html

There is going to be more details about the Apple watch that are released from Apple over the next 4+ months - but after the Apple even some journalists were able to play with the Apple Watch - and one of them was Mr David Pouge.  In his write up one thing I thought that stood out was this

    quote

There are six different band styles in various materials (leather, plastic, stainless steel). On the bottom of the watch, at each end, there’s a tiny release button that lets you make quick band changes without a Phillips screwdriver or a visit to a jeweler.

    unquote

Pouge also said according to Appel the Appel Watch is Water resistant - Sweating - wearing it in the rain washing your hands - those are fine - but if you want to swim and / or are in triathlon - well leave it at the first transition.  Because this is not something for the pool / lake or ocean.  Nor is it for the shower.

He said there is a speaker and mic on the watch so you can make and take calls right from the watch - no need to take your iPhone out of your pocket or in the case of the iPhone 6+ out of your back pack.

What Apple said per the Apple Watch per the Phone function is quote Use the built-in speaker and microphone for quick chats, or seamlessly transfer calls to your iPhone for longer conversations. You can also transfer calls from Apple Watch to your car’s speakerphone or your Bluetooth headset. And silence incoming calls by covering Apple Watch with your hand!

    Unquote

Also per the speaker and mic - Apple has a Nextel / walkie Talkie feature quote For a fun alternative to a phone call, use the built-in speaker and microphone to trade spur-of-the-moment sound bites with friends. unquote

The Fanciest model - the Gold Apple Phone edition - comes in a very nice jewelry box which doubles as a charger.  Just lay your watch in to the box and it charges.

Again more to come in the future.

One thing I said on the last episode - was please forgive me or any callers who mistakenly call it an iWatch - well here is an audio clip of someone calling it an iWatch.

    PLAY TIM_COOK_CALLING_IT_IWATCH - X 2

Yup that was Tim cook calling it an iWatch - so clearly up until very recently even internally at Apple they were calling it an iWatch - but chances are in China or Brazil or some other major country Apple was unable to secure the iWatch naming rights.  Thanks to Cameron in St.Paul for the audio of Tim.

    charged-with-stealing-shells-for-apples-iphone-6

Thanks to Michael for this next one - which is a story about what happens when you have secretive product being built by the lowest cost labor possible - and others willing to pay for info on said products.  And we are of course talking about Apples iPhones being built in mass in china and the product leeks coming out of China.  Seems in the city near where the iPhones are being built there were advertisements saying they were purchasing parts from Apple Inc at high Prices.

And that is where good old fashion capitalism meets low income workers with no loyalty at all to Apple - and bam - Parts leak.  In this Case it seems one of the leakers was arrested - a 40 year old male who reportedly started stealing shells of iPhones in July after see the aforementioned advertisements.  He reportedly sold 6 shells for 1,000 yuan or about $160.  The 40 year old was arrested on Sept 4th.

Expect a variation of this story to play out pretty much every year going forward - at least until Apple can figure out how to get a 100% robot only factory - but until that date - people will grab capitalism by the horns.

This is arrest in no way plugs all the leaks - considering the first shells of the iPhone 6 were leaked back in April / May time frame.

    Hi Rob,

    In praise of Apple.

My wife's iPhone 5 qualified for the battery replacement scheme. As we live in Ireland, where there is NO Apple store, we were faced with posting the device away to get the job done. This of course borders on the "unthinkable", because what are you meant to do without your iPhone for the next week?

We were going on a trip across the water to London at the end of last week, and I thought that we could ring apple to see if they could do anything to help while we were there. We rang Apple, they verified that the phone qualified, and asked us what day, time and store would suit. Given work commitments, the only possible day that was available to us was Saturday. The girl on the end of the phone checked the store for a "genius" appointment, and within moments, was able to give us the time, the day and the store that suited us.

As with your other correspondents, they took only about half an hour to replace the battery, and off we went. Very happy Apples service. I really don't know of any other company that looks after their customers so well.

    Well done Apple!

Hey rob, I have a question for you. I bought an unlocked iPhone 5c in March, and I was wondering if you think the iPhone 5c will have the same lifespan as the iPhone 5. I'm hoping it gets one more iOS update over the iPhone 5, as it is one year newer and there were improvements made over the 5. (I've argued with many people over this that the iPhone 5c is better than the 5)[better front camera, bigger battery and more LTE bands]

    What do you think?

    Regards,

    Ben K

Hi Ben the 5C has the Same Processor as the 5.

The only reason the 5 and 5C would have different end of lifes for updates would be 100% marketing - not technical - it is about the processor.  I would fully expect that when the iPhone 5 is no longer supported with update - the same will be true on that day for the 5C.

First Thanks Apple for making the 9.9.2014 event live.  It is nice for you to share the info at the same time to all - and not just the chosen few in the elite media.  Well that was what I wrote last night - today I would say thanks for trying to share the info at the same time - as many of us had lots of issues getting the live stream to work - for the first 45 minutes I also had someone talking in Chinese I think over the top of Apples presenters.

Of course that was just when I was not looking at the color bars - which I did a bunch of early on.  Actually for the first 6 minutes or so.

Let get right into what was announced on the iPhone side - which is exactly what Apple did and here is a quick summary.

As expected by pretty much everyone - there were two new iPhones announced - what was not expected was the names or well one of them.  And they are the iPhone 6 and 6+

Not iPhone Air or iPhone Pro or iPhone 6L - just iPhone 6+

As expected there are two new sizes a 4.7" and a 5.5"

Obviously the 6+ is the bigger one.

And then Tim Cook did the One more Thing and that was to surprise of not single person in crowd or watching live Apples new SmartWatch.  Which is being called the Apple Watch.  Not iWatch.

Now for the record if you are 56 minutes into a 2 hour presentation I don't think you can actually say one more thing  As well - it really was not one more thing.

The True One More thing was at the end of the presentation - you know about 1 hour 56 minutes into the presentation when Apple announced they are giving away for free - well - we will get to that at the end of the summary.

But for now the quick summary is

iPhone 6 and 6+,  Apple Pay, Apple Watch and then the one more one more thing.

Before we get into the nuts and bolts - lets go over the bingo Card.

Per the items which were on there - they are

From the top working are way through the card - The iPhone 4.7" , the iPhone 4S killed off, iPhone Power button moved to the side, iPhone 4.7" available Sept 19th, 128 GB version of the iPhone - which right there gave us a bingo.

Also on the card - the iPhone Camera sticking out the back of the iPhone.  The A8 & M8 Processors,  A Barometer, I guest we get a check mark for the 12 Hr of 3G talk time but actually the 6 is listed at 14 hours and the 6+ at 24 hours but more on that later, NFC was finally added to the iPhones - yes I had given up on that.  Wifi 802.11.ac is finally added as well.  The iWatch box is a check mark - It was not about the name but the device - So I give it a check mark - and that is our other bingo down the left side of the square.  And finally there is the 5.5" iPhone in the lower right corner.

There were a couple of items we don't know the answers to yet - did not figure we would - and they are the 2GB or Ram and the 2 GHz clock speed. We may not learn about those until Sept 19th when iFixit pulls them apart.

There were some items that were wrong in the rumor mill - The key one is the iPhone 5.5 not being available until late October at the earliest - yeah - from the announcement it will be available on Sept 19th as well.  The Apple Watch Available in December before the holidays was a big no as well - So Wishful thinking on that did not help and it will be early 2015 for the Apple Watch.  The Names iPhone Air and iPhone 6L - both were misses

And the iTems - that were not announced and will likely be on next Years Bingo Card were:  Reversible USB cable - actually that will be on Octobers Bingo card,  The 13 MP camera - Nope missed on that - more info shortly, 4K Video Recording and playback.  Definitely on next years bingo card,  and the Light up rear logo - maybe on next years card.  And the one with out a doubt that missed and will be back - Sapphire Glass - that's right no Sapphire Glass for the iPhone 6 or 6+

I will do a post with an update on the bingo card in the next few days.

Now Lets get into some details on Specs and Pricing and availability for each of the iPhones announced.

    http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/

    09:45

    http://www.apple.com/iphone/compare/

    http://www.apple.com/iphone-6/specs/

As expected and seen in rumored photos and video the iPhone 6 and 6+ are 4.7" and 5.5" and the power button is moved from the top to the right side.  Colors are same as with the 5S - Gold, Silver and Space Grey.

As I mentioned the camera protrudes / sticks out the back of the iPhones and that is because the rest of the device is pretty thin - the 6 is 6.9 mm thick and the 6+ is 7.1 mm thick - this vs 7.6 mm for the 5S.

The length and width for the 6 is 5.44 inches by 2.64 inches,  and the 6+ is 6.22 inches by 3.06 inches.  Weight of the iPhone 6+ is 172 grams vs 129 grams for the 6 and 112 grams for the 5S.

Storage finally changes the three sizes are 16Gb - don't do it.  64 GB and as mentioned before 128 GB as the new top size.  Really folks - don't do the 16GB - go for 128 GB - you will be glad you did.

For the screens - Apple is calling the screens Retina HD.  The Screens are still LED backlit more about that later in the show.

The resolution of the 6 is 1334 x 750 pixels at 326 ppi - which is the same resolution as the iPhone 5S.  The 6+ has the resolution of 1920 x 1080 resolution for true 1080p HD video playback.  The Resolution is 401 ppi.

The contract ratio for the 6 is 1400 to 1 vs 800 to 1 for the 5S.  The 6+ is 1300 to 1.

And they added what they are calling dual domain pixels for wider viewing angles.

For the 6+ in landscape mode you can now have the icons line up vertically on the right side for your dock.  And yes the icons do rotate when you rotate the 6+

There is also a hey my fingers are not that long one handed mode - where if you double tap on the touch id button everything moves down to the lower half of the screen.

Legacy apps works just fine on the new iPhones - no need to do anything special to the apps.  They just fill the screen.

On to the heart of the iPhones - the A8 Chip was announced along with the M8 motion coprocessor.

The A8 is built using the new 20 nm process.  This means better battery life and smaller size.  Actually 13% smaller than the A7.  But it is also 25% faster CPU performance.  and up to 50% more energy efficient than the A7.

As mentioned before the Talk time on the 6 and 6+ is much better than the 5S.

With the 5S it was 10 hours of 3G talk time - the 6 is 14 hours and the 6+ is 24 hours.

    Internet use 5s = 8 hours, 6 = 10 hours, 6+ = 12 hours.

    Video Playback - 5S = 10 hours, 6 = 11 hours, 6+ = 14 hours.

    Audio playback - the most important spec -  5S = 40 hours, 6 = 50 hours and 6+ = 80 hours.

If battery life is your thing - then the 6+ is definitely the iPhone for you.

On the sensor side - as expected the 6 and 6+ both gained a barometer.

Now lets get into what you really use your iPhone for and that is video recording and pictures.

For Video recording - the 5S supports 120 fps slow mo - the 6 and 6+ support up to 240 fps slow mo - and they showed a demo and it looked amazing.

Other new additions are up to 60 fps 1080p HD video recording - did I mention you really want that 128 gb version - Yeah - that is one reason why.  The also added Cinematic Video Stabilization and Continuous Autofocus for video.

On the Back Camera or as Apple calls it the iSight camera - This is where Android boyz will be beating up and go after the iPhone for the next 12 months.  Because Apple went from 8 MP on the iPhone 4S to an 8 MP on the 5 to an 8 MP on the 5S to now a you guessed it an 8 MP camera on the 6 and 6+.  Yeah - leaving that 13 MP camera on the bingo card for next year.  Again expect lots of ads and attacks about the iPhone 6 and 6+ camera being only 8 MP - forget that it is not all about MP's - it is simple to attack on and most people will not look to deep.

That said - there is really not much different between the 5S and 6 and 6+ cameras.  The biggest difference is apple added Optical Image stabilization in the 6+ camera. this adds physical image stabilization to go along with the digital stabilization.

Apple claims there is also improved face detection.  And there is Autofocus with focus pixels - that they claim improves pictures especially in low light.  We shall see once  it is released.  But over all I think the camera updates we maybe one of the areas Apple could have and should have done more - and one areas I think we will see the iPhone attacked over for the next 12 months.

For the front facing or FaceTime camera - Apple added Burst Mode and that is it.  Guess Apple wanted to cut down on the number of naked selfies by celebrities.  Oooppps - did I say that out loud.

On the wireless front there were some additions to the 6 and 6+ namely Near Field communication or NFC has finally made it to the iPhone - I really thought NFC was not going to make it on the iPhone ever - I thought Apple did not like it.  That said NFC is a big piece of Apple Pay - so now it is not just added but going forward a key cog in the machinery.

    Apple also updated wifi to 802.11.ac - while still supporting , a , b , g , and n as with the 5S.

And LTE was improved again - with a boat load of different LTE bands supporting over 200 carriers around the world.  One version supports 16 different bands,  another version supports 20 LTE bands.

Interesting in the US - There are two versions - One for Sprint, C Spire and US Cellular,   And the Second version for AT&T, T-mobile, Verizon, Cricker and AIO plus also for All of Canada's carriers.  So if you are looking for a version in the US to get and move from one carrier to another - get the Verizon version - which does support GSM and CDMA.

One other new feature added to the iPhone 6 and 6+ is Voice over LTE - where supported by the carrier.

Per availability - that will be 8:00 AM local time at your Apple store on September 19th as expected for the iPhone 6 and also for the iPhone 6+ which was not expected.

For the iPhone 6 Subsidized Pricing not surprisingly is $199, 299 and 399 for the 16, 64 and 128 GB respectively.  So same pricing as the iPhone 5S.

For the 6+ just add $100 for each storage level.

If you go with T-Mobile - there is no subsidizing of the price and the base price for the iPhone 6 is $649 and it is $749 for the 6+ again add $100 as you go up in storage levels.  So the 128 GB iPhone 6+ unsubsidized is $949.

    Pre-Orders start on September 12th.

So Am I going to order a 6+ - Well there is one item missing for me that pretty much put the kibosh on getting a new iPhone - and that is the missing Sapphire front glass.  Well that and the fact I am not eligible for a full upgrade.

My recommendation is this - If you have the 5 or early - Definitely upgrade.  If you have the 5S and you really were hoping for the larger screen and you travel and battery life is a huge issue - then definitely upgrade.

But if you get along fine on your 5S - and your battery life is fine 95% of the time - then I just can not justify upgrading to the 6 or 6S at this time.

I do however think we now know that next Years models will be called the 6S and the 6S+ with the S standing for Sapphire.

    20:07

    http://www.apple.com/iphone-6/apple-pay/

After the iPhones were announced the next announcement was Apple Pay.  Apples new payment system.

First off this will not be out until some time in October - and right now will require the iPhone 6 and 6+.  Eventually when the Apple Watch is available it will work with it as well - and that will bring support to the iPhone 5S as well.

I am not going to get into a lot of detail now - because well it is about mobile payments and some of you might be operating heavy machinery and well it will not be available until October.

In a nut shell Apple will use Touch ID and NFC in your iPhone 6 to allow you to pay via credit card at a few places to start - like Subway or Mc Donalds, Disney World, Apple stores, Macy's, Walgreens,  Whole foods, Petco, Toys R us and a few other stores to start.

Eventually if this works well it will expand to other stores - but to start it will seem like very few stores and probably not the ones you want.

Like Walmart, Target, the local gas station and grocery store.

Per the back end - you submit your credit card they verify with your bank and it is set up as a secure element in your iPhone - then when you go to pay - it is not your credit card info that is given but a special one time payment code.  So if your phone is stollen - your credit card into is not in it.

But here is the part I really like - Apple does not know or collect what items your purchased.  unlike say some other don't be evil company - Apple is not interested in collecting data on you to sell to give to advertisers.  They just want to make it easier for you to pay for stuff and more secure.

Again to start I think it will be frustrating for many looking to actually make a payment via Apple Pay in the brick in mortar world.  But Apple did say Apple Pay will also extend to online shopping and that is where Target.com will come into play, as well as Groupon - plus with the Starbucks App and some others.

Right now this is for Visa, Master card and Amex.

With the following banks - Bank of America, Chase, Citi, Wells Fargo and What's in your iPhone - Capital One.

Coming soon is Barclays, PNC, USAA, US Bank and Navy Federal Credit union.

And really I have said way more than I planned.

More info on this in October as it gets ready to roll out.

    22:38

    http://www.apple.com/watch/

And that lead us to the One More thing.. which really - 56 minutes into a 2 hour presentation - just does not seem like one more thing.

But whatever - dead horse I have beaten.

And the first one more thing is the Apple Watch.  Actually there are three -  Apple Watch,  Apple Watch Sport and apple Watch Edition.

Lets get right into pricing and availability - the two things most disappointing.

Pricing starts at $349 and most likely goes up quickly from there.

Availability - is Some time in Early 2015.

One other thing that could be an issue is the Apple Watch is ALL right. Every picture and every frame of every video showed one thing - the Apple Watch was on the left wrist of everyone - not one single picture or frame of video with it on the right wrist.  Hopefully by early 2015 - Apple will have addressed this clearly Lefthanded snub.

And before you think I am going on a left-handed crusade - The way you interact with the Apple Watch - is via touch and turn - you touch on the screen - but you also turn the home nob - this is an important part of the UI - and that nob if placed on the right wrist would mean your hand left hand would be in the way of the screen when trying to use it.

So I hope Apple addresses this issue.

Ok - per the Apple watch - it is very pretty - it will gives you access to lots of apps and you definitely can do a lot more with it than with the Pebble.

You do need an iPhone to use it - an iPhone 5 or later is needed.

And it does have NFC so you could use your iPhone 5S and the Apple watch for Apple pay.

Apple wants 3rd Party apps to be developed for it - and by early 2015 we will have a lot more to say with regards to 3rd party app capabilities.

Per the hardware - there is a magsafe type charging connector that does inductive charging.  And there are sensors on the back of the Apple Watch that allow it to monitory your heart rate.

The front face of all the Apple Watches is Sapphire.

And for each version there is a 38 mm and 42 mm case - a women's and mens version basically.

And all of them are really pretty.

I look forward to getting one of the sport versions - once they work out that whole Right wrist issue.  And Yes - I did send an email to Tim Cook asking about that.  No Reply yet.

Again a lot lot more on the Apple watch in future episodes.

Oh and the one more one more thing - is that Apple is giving away via iTunes U2's latest album for free.  As long as you have an iTunes account you can download the U2 album for free.  And U2 did perform live at the end of the apple event - and after their performance is when Apple did what I consider the real one more thing.  And that was the announcement of the free album - you have to mid October to download it - so if you are a U2 fan - well you probably already downloaded it.

    27:37

One other announcement early in the presentation was that iOS 8 will go live on September 17th.

But first - let me read this email:

    Rob

For the first time in over 5 years the live stream was a bust.  Started with SAP blended into the North American feed on the servers.  Then the CDN kept jittering while more server capacity was added.  I came in and went out over a dozen times without touching the iPad.

Then tried from MacBook Air, and webpage had been rolled back to cached content without the live feed link.  What I did see was impressive in terms of technical advances.  The major tradeoff for me is the cycloptic camera bumping out.  Clearly not a problem for anyone using a case.  But I think I can hear the bump screams from the "other side" where Steve's genius spirit is loathing this aspect.

I like the 2-wide landscape capabilities for things like mail and messaging - just like my iPad mini.  I guess I'll play with one before jumping though.

Looks like you got a lot of the bingo card covered and thanks for keeping us up to dat all through the iOS 8 development phases!

    Cheers,

    PaulG in Lawrenceville

PS: If there was "One More Thing" I couldn't see/hear it so can't address it - hope it was an Apple TV uplift.

Well Paul - sorry no Apple TV mention except Tim cook mentioned you can control Apple TV with your Apple Watch.

Per your issues with the Feed - and this is coming from Apples new CDN - you and I were not the only ones with issues.

I bring this up as I just mentioned that iOS 8 will go live on September 17th - Stay away from iOS 8 - do not repeat do not update on the 17th or the 18th or 19th or the 20th.  Wait until the 24th before you update.  Please Please Please listen to me.

If today's event is any indications of Apples CDN prowess - you want nothing to do with it next week.

Now when you are ready to upgrade to iOS 8 - remember my tried and true steps for upgrading.

First force quite out of every open app.

Second - Back up your iOS device to your computer and then sync and then disconnect after the sync.

Third - Go to Settings - General - Reset - Reset network settings.

Fourth - re-connect to Wifi after the reboot.

Fifth - Connect to your computer - do one more back up.

Sixth - Upgrade to iOS 8

    Seventh - Enjoy iOS 8.

But again - I can not say it enough - do not try to upgrade on September 17th - wait one week until Sept 24th - you will be glad you waited.

    VOICEMAIL - Tammy_initial_fdbk_apple_event

Did I mention not to update to iOS 8 on the 17th.

If you are with AT&T and if you want to check to see if your phone is eligible for an upgrade you can check by going the phone and dialing * 6 3 9 # and then the green call button - the 639 stands for NEW for the letters of those keys.

Then you get a text - which well in the past was useful in telling you when you could upgrade on your current plan.

But at least for me - it is no longer useful - as it says I am eligible to upgrade if I switch to the Next plan - which is in my opinion not something I would ever do or recommend.

So it does not look like it gives you info on when you can upgrade on your current plan - which for me is the grandfathered unlimited plan - which really is about a two year upgrade cycle.

Actually I did find the place to check for my current plan and not going to AT&T next - and it looks like if I were to go to the iPhone 6+ now at 128 GB - instead of it costing me $949 it would only cost me $749 - which is still more than fully subsidized at $499.   But as I said early - I am going to pass on this years versions and wait until next years 6S+

    33:24

Thanks to our sponsor today and that is Harrys.com - if you go to harrys dot com - that is h a r r y s dot com and use the promo code t i i - you will save $5 on your first order.

Here is a great story about my Harry's razor - As those of you that saw the artwork for ep 317 know - I shave my head - have for many years.  But I had something happen to me last month I have never had happen before.  I was sitting at Applebe's in Des Moines and the waiter asked me what Razor I use to shave my head and how I get it so close on the shave.  Now mind you this was after driving up there from Kansas City - and it was a full 8+ hours since I had shaved and it was from a harry's razor which at that point was a little over a month old.  That is how good a shave you get with Harry's razors - I absolutely love my harry's razors blades - they give a great looking and feeling shave.  And yes on the bill at the end of the night I wrote down harrys.com and promo code Tii to save $5.  So he actually got two tips from me that night.

I used to use the most expensive blades out there and I never had that question asked of me before - Folks You don't need to waste your money on those other expensive blades - where most of the price is per all those Marketing Dollars they spend.  Save money and get a better shave with Harry's.  With Harry's your money goes to getting great blades and at a fraction of the cost of those so called high end blades.

The other great part about Harry's is they get delivered right to your door step.  No need to track down that person to unlock to the display case so you can get your razors - heck no need to even go to the store - you just order on line and get the razors delivered right to your door with free shipping.  The starter kit they sent to me is amazing - for $15 you get a razor - Moisturizing shave cream and 3 razor blades - all in a great package that screams GIFT ME GIFT ME - are you listening ladies.

And Harry's is a company I am proud to have as a sponsor - Jeff the co-founder of Harry's also co-founded Warby Parker.  That means you know you are getting the same great quality experience as you get with Warby Parker - and they also have a great social mission where 1% of sales and at least 1% of their time is donated to organizations to help prep people for personal and professional success.  With Harrys.com You get a shave that feels good from a company you can feel good about.

Once again go to Harrys.com now and save $5 off when you enter the code - t i i with your first purchase.  That is h a r r y s dot com and enter the coupon code T I I at check out to save $5 on your first purchase and start shaving better today or at least as soon as your new shave kit arrives at your door step.

    VOICEMAIL -  STEVE_LI_NEW_iPhone_full_price_quest

Steve - it is the Verizon Version you want to get if you want the unlocked version.  This is Assuming the same is true for new Verizon version - which it should be as it will be LTE - and that is the deal with the FCC they needed to make it unlocked to get access to certain LTE bands.

But if you say have an AT&T account and then you buy a Verizon iPhone and take it to your AT&T account - they are not likely going to unlock your old iPhone 5S for example - not until you reach the end of your original contract period.

    Hi Rob,

On the bingo card does itime count the same as iWatch on the bingo card?

    Regards,

    Michael

And that came in prior to the event - to which I answered - the iWatch block was about a device not a name.  So any wearable watch with add sensors was what that block was about.

In the past I have been pretty good with specs on new devices - at least compared to most blogs - but on the name side - Not so much.  Look at my post about the iPad before it launched - I nailed most of the specs even the weight - but missed on the Name.

Prior to the launch was this email:

    Hi Rob,

I seriously see no reason why the camera would protrude on the phone, due to the fact that that it is so much thicker than the iPod, (due to the "phone" parts). Which would allow for the

camera to mount flush to the outside of the phone (internal room)

    Regards,

    Ken B

Another Prior to the Launch email was

    Hi Rob,

After listening to your podcast about the bingo card I had to wonder if the dual phone launch and some of the other variables wouldn't make apple tighten things up a bit in the options for new devices.

My thinking is that since they are upping the storage to 128 gig, that the three tiers will be 32, 64, & 128 gig on the two new devices while 8 & 16 or 16 & 32 remain on the 5s/5c entry devices.  Of course they would sell existing inventory of the larger sizes, but it would limit the production run for additional entry level phones.

Just my thought, thanks again and love the show!

    Regards,

    Peter

    Hi Rob,

I was disappointed at the new curved glass screens.  It may look nice, but screen protectors won't be able to completely cover the iPhone 6 (or 6 plus) screen and stay stuck down at the edges. I think Apple is creating future demand for sapphire-crystal screens here :-(

    Best regards,

    Paul.

P.S. The Apple watch looks nice though :-)

    Hi Rob,

    Per the Apple event

    Mind.  Blown.

iPhone 6 looks pretty amazing.  I like that the middle step will be 64G now (tho I really haven't used all of my 32G on my 5s).

I watch capabilities blow everything else out of the water.  Literally.  Design seems chunky, but I'd have to see/feel it to know if I want to buy one.  I certainly LUST for one now...

Overall, and amazing event (tho my streaming for the first 45 minutes kept crashing and audio was squirrely).   Looking forward to other listeners feedback.

Lets see if Wall Street likes it.  I am guessing they won't.lust for one.

    Regards,

    Tom

Hi Tom - per the street - nope they did not like it but did not hate it either - During the day  the price moved from a high of 103.08 to a low of 96.14 ending the day down just 37 cents at 97.99.

    Hi Rob,

today's announcement surprised me. I never would've expected to see apple announce a watch. I always saw it as un apple like, selling devices that need another device to take advantage of its features. The price point is a little high, but I'm sure that won't stop them from selling millions of them.

It also surprises me that apple dropped the 32GB and went to 16/64/128GB. That also seems very un apple like because of the hog price point for each storage tier. I had no doubts that apple would keep the 16GB as the base storage.

    Regards,

    Ben K

    VOICEMAIL - David_F_UK_apple_event_FDBK

    Hi Rob,

I haven't been this excited since the launch of the original iPhone! This launch really gave me everything I've wanted and more!

Personally, I'll be getting an iPhone 6 -128 in gold for my fiancée and an iPhone 6+ 128 in gold for myself.

Thank God the Apple Watch won't come out until next year, this will give my wallet a relief over Christmas. I will be giving a promise note to my fiancée for an Apple watch 38mm version and I'll be getting the Sport edition for myself. I'm glad that I held off buying the Pebble.

What a great day for us Apple fanboys and fangirls! You're going to have lots to talk about!

    Enjoying the moment,

Hope you are listening the new FREE U2 album. It's pretty good.

    Hi Rob.

I was disappointed not to see anything on Apple TV. Did I miss it - my streaming kept stalling.

Apple watch looks awesome, but big mistake to miss the Xmas selling season & the price point is ridiculous.

    Just my opinion.

    Laurie B - Frisco TX

Agree with you on the Apple Watch feedback - pricing seems very high.  And strange on missing the holiday season - clearly it just was not ready for prime time on time.

Per Apple TV - I did not think it would be in this event - Hoped it would - but likely will be in the October event.

    We shall see.

    add-security-alerts-for-icloud-users-1409880977

Here is some more info on the iCloud and naked celebrity picture gate.

According to Apple they plan to add additional steps to keep hackers out of user accounts.  Tim Cook said quote

celebrities' iCloud accounts were compromised when hackers correctly answered security questions to obtain their passwords, or when they were victimized by a phishing scam to obtain user IDs and passwords.  Apple will alert users via email and push notifications when someone tries to change an account password, restore iCloud data to a new device, or when a device logs into an account for the first time.

    unquote

He also talked about the issue being more human than technological - quote

When I step back from this terrible scenario that happened and say what more could we have done, I think about the awareness piece," I think we have a responsibility to ratchet that up. That's not really an engineering thing."

    Unquote

Apple said it will expand the use of two-factor authentication and that currently a majority of users don't use two-factor authentication - so it will be more aggressive in quote encouraging unquote people to turn it on in iOS 8.

In the article from the wall street journal - they talked to Ashka Soltani a security expert who said the following quote:

There's a well-understood tension between usability and security, More often than not, Apple chooses to err on the side of usability to make it easier for the user that gets locked out from their kid's baby photos than to employ strong protections for the high-risk individuals."

    unquote

Now here are my thoughts on this.

Because some Hey Look at me Look at me Celebrities decided that posting pictures of their VaJay Jays to their iCloud account was a fun thing to do - with no common sense or reality that hey Naked Pictures of my private bits are probably not something I want to put up on the cloud - ANY cloud - we as regular users who do not post private pictures of our nasty bits - must now say good by to easy to remember passwords and easy to restore passwords and now must basically give DNA to prove our accounts are our accounts when we forget those impossible to remember passwords we need to switch to.  Remember when you used to be able to just put in your first dogs name for a password and your were golden with iTunes - now unless your first dogs name happened to be Capital B lower case u lower case t lower case t Zero lower case N Dollar sign Dollar Sign - well you are kind of Capital S Capital O Capital L.

Thanks Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton and Kirsten Dunst  For trying to see how good the True Tone flash really was, uploading pictures of your nether regions and picking easy to crack security questions.  I am half tempted to go and look at your photos just so if you ever decide to do a Podcast and I have to work with you - I can say - yeah I saw the pics - I've seen better.  I also love how Kirsten Dunst took a swipe at iCloud as well.  Hey Ms Dunst - if you don't want your Naked as in no cloths on photos to get out - probably best not to you know take the pics to start with.

Point is the first step to having naked photos or videos leaked is in the taking of said videos or pictures - After that it is just a matter of when not if they get leaked.

Just Ask - Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian, Rob Lowe, Sharon Stone and Jessica Rabbit - come on you went frame by frame on the laser disk for that last one - I know you did.

    Hey Rob,

I have had a S4 for about 1 year now and a month ago it stopped working. I called samsung and said because I removed the battery(because I thought it might fix it)the warranty was voided. Foolishly I bought an S5 and it was like buying a rusted car. The back panel fell off(Samsung wouldn't fix), battery life dropped("Not samsungs responsibility"),  and finally I dropped it and the chip cracked. My wife had been telling me all these years " Get an iPhone" but I never listened. I had been listening to your show sometimes because my wife does. I am wondering if I should buy a 5s because I need a phone for work or wait for 6. For all people thinking about switching to a S5 don't do it!

    Thanks,

    James,

    Los Angles, California

Well James clearly at this point you should wait until September 19th and get the new iPhone 6 -  and thanks for your warning on the S5.

    Hi Rob

I have a question for you or the listeners. I have this problem were on my phone on the home screen I get the spinning busy icon to the right of the wifi/LTE icon. I have an iPhone 5 running the latest OS. It'll just randomly show up and I can't get it to stop unless I turn off and turn back on the phone. I've tried killing all apps and I've tried just waiting. Neither have worked. It doesn't seem to drain the battery but I can only let it go for a few hours before it drives me crazy. Have you are any of the listeners seen this before?

    Regards,

    Richard

    reversible-usb-charging-cords-iphone-an?ref=nav_search

One of the rumors going into the 9.9.14 event was that Apple would introduce reversible USB cables.

Well If you don't want to wait for Apples cords - you can go to Kickstarter and ok wait there as well - but at least pledge today.

There is a project called Belaycords - one word spelled B E L A Y C O R D S - belaycords - And they are Reversible USB charging cords.  This one had a goal of $4,000 and had raised over $55,000 to date.  And has until November 2nd at 3:09 PM CT to complete funding.  Like I said you will be waiting a little bit.

That said they plan to start delivery in November - yes this november - so the month they finish funding they will start delivering - which makes me wonder are they really needing the kickstarter money to fund this or are they just using it as a shopping cart.

Pricing on this one is $30 for one cord or $55 for two cords.  You can choose between Lightening and 30 Pin and Micro USB cords - no not all three with one cord - just one end for one cord.  You pick the end when ordering.

Search for Belaycords at kickstarter dot com or in the show notes for Ep 320 at today in iOS dot com or in the Tii App.

And note it looks like this is only for Charging - not for syncing.

    VOICEMAIL -

    Hi Rob,

I just noticed this on the "wall huggers" commercial. The girl with the android phone says "no I'm good" but I pauses it at that moment and noticed she only had 10% battery!? How is that good?

    Regards,

    Cesar

And he sent a screen shot showing the 10% indicator - yeah - not exactly what I would call I'm fine unless well it is an Android device and we all know how Android users use their devices a lot less than iOS users do - so who knows maybe she was fine.

What I thought was interesting in the screen show was the pop over window on the Android device with the title - Ultra Power Saving Mode - and then under that 10% battery were recommendations for saving battery life like - Restrict applications usage to only essential apps and those selected by you,  And turn off mobile data when the screen turns off - but most the most interesting suggestion - Change the color of the screen to grayscale

Hmmm - so on Sammy phones that saves battery life. And looking into this - We see that is true with the S5 because it has an AMOLED display - which relies on its pixels to brighten screens.  unlike past iPhones that used LCD displays - and there was no savings.  Some had speculated that iOS 8's ability to enable Grayscale was an indication of an AMOLED display coming to the iPhone 6.  And well they  WERE ?????????

    Hi Rob,

Every time I try to download an app on my iPhone 5c it downloads the app for a second and then app disappears what can I do to fix this

    Regards,

    Zach

Hi. Thanks for all you do with the show. Please post question to listeners. I would like to find a app that will allow me to download ustream archived videos to my iphone. The question was posed for YouTube a while back with great response.

    Thanks

    Nick

    Rob,

Do you or the listeners know of a jailbreak tweek or app that tricks an iPhone app into thinking it is running the iPad version of that app?

I have an unlimited plan on my AT&T iPhone 5 and some apps, like the watchespn app or nbc sports live extra, offer more content on an iPad than they do on the iPhone.

A couple of big pieces of news with regards to the Tii App.

One The Tii App has been completely redesigned.

The UI is more iOS 8 - and it offers some great new features.

To start with in the Episode list - there is now options to pick just Audio episodes, or Text episodes - which are blog posts, or Video episode or PDF episodes.

Ok - no Video episodes yet - but soon.

Additionally the play screen has been completely redone making it really easy to get to the extras for that episode and to the show notes - and the show notes are not interactive with the links to items talked about.

In the upper right of the episode screen is a Persons Head - That is the contact us icon - tap that and you can email the show or call the show or follow on twitter or if you have issues hit the troubleshooting icon.

From the main episode play screen If you hit the play button and then turn the iPhone on its side - it will go into Car Mode.  The first time you do this it will ask you for access to your location data - the reason for the question is it will automatically switch between day and night mode based on where you are living and the time of day and if it is day light or night time.

Car mode gives you some nice big buttons to you know make it easier to use when in the car.

In the episode list there is a thumbnail of the episode artwork for each episode - which I think looks very good.  The Download button is wait for it - Labeled as Download - I know - unheard of.  The little Star confused so many.  When you view a blog post - it marks it as viewed and there is now an indicator on what % of each episode you have listened to.

In the upper right of each post in the episode mode there is either a microphone for an audio episode, T in a document for a Blog post - and a PDF in document for PDF file.  Plus a Play button in a film slide for a Video episode.

If you go into the options - that is from the episode list and the button in the upper left - one option is Inbox - this shows all past tweets.

If you are someone that likes to consume two or more episodes at a time and in the order they were released - which is how I usually listen to podcasts - then you will want to go to settings - and then turn off - Play Top to Bottom - which will then mean it plays bottom to top in the list.

I hope you like the new update and your feedback is greatly appreciated - and I did not even go over the iPad mode.

But there is one other big announcement with regards to the Tii App - and that is the price - as in Free - Yup if you held off buying the Tii app - well you lucky day has come - the app is now priced for you.  For those that did buy the Tii App - thanks for your support.

So search for Tii in the iTunes App store to get the new and improved and free Tii App.  If for no other reason you get push notices when new episodes are released.  But it is really the best way to consume the show - Really.

Actually if you never had purchased the Tii App - I would greatly appreciate you going and downloading it now for your iOS device - even if you are not going to use it - just to help it out in the iTunes rankings.  Then please launch it once you download it just to check it out.  That will get you set up for Push notices so going forward you will know exactly when new episodes come out.  Oh and a warning - turn off the volume on the pushes if you are sleeping typically around 3:00 AM Central US time that is the typical time I put up new episodes.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote “The big competitors in the mobile-phone industry such as Nokia and Motorola won’t be whispering nervously into their clamshells over a new threat to their business. The iPhone is nothing more than a luxury bauble that will appeal to a few gadget freaks. In terms of its impact on the industry, the iPhone is less relevant. Apple is unlikely to make much of an impact on this market. Apple will sell a few to its fans, but the iPhone won’t make a long-term mark on the industry.”

Well Matthew - Spot on - well except for pretty much everything you said which was spot off.  Just sayin.

Hi Rob, just listened to episode 318 where you talked about the rumored protruding camera on the iPhone 6, to which you stated <quote>...that is not something they've ever done before, or in the least bit looks Apple-ish</unquote>. However in the 5th generation iPod Touch there's a protruding camera that looks a lot like the "leaked images" showing the camera in the iPhone 6.

Ironically I was at the Apple Store in NYC yesterday and this is the exact iPod Touch they use to demonstrate the earphones and headsets on display. I actually did a double-take when I saw the protruding camera on the back, as I hadn't noticed it before, or heard anyone mention it when talking about the camera on the iPhone 6.

    Regards,

    Aric

    Hi Rob,

Regards the Protruding Camera for the iPhone 6

It's possible. The new iPod touch has it and they pulled it off nicely. High quality fit and finish as you'd expect. I didn't lay it flat so not sure what it does to that end. Most people use cases (I don't) that are thicker than how far the camera protrudes so for most any tilting when laying flat would be a non-issue.

    Regards,

    Ken E

    http://www.loopinsight.com/2014/08/28/apple-announces-

    special-event-for-sept-9/

And now the September 9th event is officially official - as apple sent out their invites last Thursday - shortly after Ep 318 launched - of course . The artwork this time around was a gray scale image of the Apple logo blown up with 9.9.2014 in big letters - with the words quote wish we could say more. unquote under the date in small letters.

    08:16

    http://tii.libsyn.com/992014-apple-event-rumor-bingo

And with the event official and the date known and this being the last episode before the event - that means there needs to be a Rumor Bingo card to go over.

And yup that went up on Thursday on the Tii blog at today in iOS dot com - and a post up on the G+ community as well.

Lets go over the 9.9.2014 bingo card.

First - I like to point out - not everything on the bingo card are things I think will happen - some actually conflict with others - but these are the top rumors out there for this event.  And no there is no Apple TV listed - it actually just missed the cut.

For those items I think are most likely to happen they are:

    4.7" iPhone

    5.5" iPhone

A8 Processor with M8 Motion Processor

Sapphire Glass - even if just for one or two specific options of the iPhone.

    13 MP rear Camera

iWatch - announced - and it being available in Dec 2014.

And 128 GB Version of the iPhone finally.

Those are the ones I think are the most likely to happen - and if they did - we get an X on the bingo card.

    Others likely to happen.

iPhone 4S killed off.  But I think the 5C and 5S remain active and for sale.

iPhone Power button moves to the side of the iPhone from the top.

4.7" iPhone available on Sept 19th.

5.5" iPhone not available until the end of October.

iPhone 6 and iPhone Air are the names for the 4.7" and 5.5" respectively.

a Barometer is added to the sensors

Camera Sticks out of the iPhone and is not flush with the back.

2 GHz clock speed for the A8 - but not actually announced at the event.

And Apple introduces a reversible USB cable.

Others that might happen listed are

    Light up rear Apple logo

Wifi 802.11.AC - hold over from last years bingo card.

4k Video recording and 4k video out - also hold overs from last year

NFC - more on that later - and again a holdover from last year and the year before.

12 Hr 3G talk time - Yup Hold over from last year as well.

2 GB Ram - You guessed it hold over from last year.

    And finally

iPhone 6 and 6L are the names used - I don't think that will happen.

Again Definitely not all these rumor will come to pass and if history repeats itself most will not.  But some will.  Will be interesting to see which ones from last year finally happen if any.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new popular post in the G+ community this past week came from -

Me - and it was the post where I put up the Artwork for the 9.9.2014 invite to the media from Apple.  I asked for people to try and find the hidden meaning in the Artwork.  Because well there always seems to be some sort of hidden meaning.

And there were some good ideas thrown around.

Storm Garelli asked if that was hint that Siri will be massively expanded - per the say more part.

I said initially maybe the More - means a hint that the iPhone will be bigger as in more screen size.

Nick Bracken - said the square look and 9.9.2014 make it look like what you would expect from a watch face.

Storm Garelli also added that the gray scale color looks like that of e-ink - and wonders if that means the iWatch will have an e-ink display and hence very long battery life.

Tim Galloway suggested the shadow effect in the image is like that from a sundial - aka an iWatch.

Lawrence McFarland - said the photo is super close - AKA near aka Near Field Communication - AKA NFC

David Finch said the only reason they put the date as 9 dot 9 dot 2014 is because it reads the same in the US as the rest of the world.

    And there were other suggestions.

I Felt after looking at the image and the words - that the words - Wish we could say more  are not Apple saying they wish they could tells us more now per what they are about to release - but rather Apple saying don't you "wish we could say more" to our iOS devices.  And that the big focus on the 9.9 event will be all about voice control - voice control from your iOS devices to then control items in your house - and voice control via your iWatch.

It is all about us wishing we had more voice control via our iOS devices of the items around us.  Turn on the back porch lights.  lock the front door.  Make sure the garage door is closed.  Start My foot massager. Flush the toilet. Turn on the Bathroom fan.  Well ok - maybe that is too much voice control

Anyway - thanks to all that participated in the speculation for the Apple Artwork for the 9 / 9 event.  And I should mention that

    - this past week there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.   By the way Civil means civil - if you think people should block you if they don't like the way you say things - yeah - you are in the wrong community.  This is a place people can feel safe to post and read questions and comments.

Folks Go to today in iOS dot com slash community to join in.

And thanks to all 1200+ of you already in the community and contributing.

Hey rob I was wandering what your thoughts are this time around about NFC. This rumor pops up every year but this time seems to have a lot more buzz behind it. Personally I use NFC with my check card and think it's pretty great I would really like the ability to keep my wallet in my pocket and have my phone which has all kinds of security my wallet does not have and pay with that. So do you think this is the year for NFC and if so do you think this is a good move to complement  ibeacons? Personally I think using both is a good idea.

Love the show rob and can't wait to see what's coming on September 9.

    Regards,

    Justin B

Well Justin - I think this comment from Tony L might help answer your question:

    Hi Rob,

Wouldn't it be great if the "one more thing" is the iWatch with all the capabilities plus NFC for payment without even taking out your phone?

    Tony L

    San Francisco

Tony L - Brilliant - Adding NFC to the iWatch - rather than the iPhone - Brilliant.  That makes a lot of sense.  Easy to swipe your wrist over NFC payment pad then to take your iPhone out of your pocket.   Great great idea.

I don't think we will see NFC in the iPhone proper - I am probably wrong on that - but it just seems - Apple has a solution for mobile payments that works already with out it.  But that does not mean Apple will not do what Tony suggest and add NFC where it makes more sense in the iWatch - which is easier to scan and well get near that scanning pad.

    Hi Rob,

I wonder if Apple is Manufacturing the entire iwatch in the US. Worth the $ to Apple not to have copy cats start until sept 9, makes it much easier to secure information. I have not seen one leaked photo, have you?

    Regards,

    Ken E

Another very good point - And you are right - there have been no leaks to Sunny dickson or the others blogs that tend to get Advanced Apple Kit from their paid sources in the China.  So yes - if the Apple iWatch is announced on the 9th and it is shipping in 2014 - the fact there are no leaked photos may indicate Apple moved production of it to a facility say by Jabil Circuits in the US - I pick Jabil as being the manufacturer from the point of view they do both high volume and classified Military Contract Manufacturing - and that later option - would be needed to maintain a leakless environment.  At least if I was Apple that is who I would pick.

    Hi Rob,

I have yet to hear anyone, including you, comment on where in a typical Apple store, any new gear would fit. Obviously if something updates something, we can sense which table will be home for that, but most pundits are talking new areas of merchandise. No room for more tables.

Here in Boise, the Apple store is in a Mall location that is fixed in size. I've been there twice since Sunday with questions about my iPhone. As I survey the space, I don't sense any open area. I worked retail for a long number of years and know how to shoe horn in something extra, but we're talking Apple and they live on minimalism, or have.

Can you start reflecting on this. Whichever analyst keeps pining for the ongoing 'gonna be a full size TV' madness. Has he ever figured out where those would fit? I have never visited a flagship store and I suspect the majority of stores are more like the Boise model than not. No room.  that is something I'd like to hear about. A finite space, with strict Apple rules, so what is gonna happen at retail?

Bloomberg is reporting that Apple has entered into agreements with Visa, Mastercard and American Express for a new mobile payment system.

Supposedly according to Bloomberg this payment system would include NFC and touch ID.

It does not take an over paid Anal-ist to tell us Apple drives a lot of standards in the industry - especially in the US.  But hey this article had one and that is what he said non-the-less.

Very little in the way of details was actually given in the article.  Other than to say this would be around the next iPhone.  Which means any current iPhones would likely miss out - especially if part of this is about NFC.

Color me skeptical on some of the details - I would think if Apple is getting a deal done with the three major Credit Card Companies - it would be for more than just the iPhone 6 and beyond - but also work backwards with at least the iPhone 5S.

Maybe more on this on Ep 320.

A few different reports popping up saying that the iWatch - while it will be announced at the Sept 9th even - will not actually be available until 2015 - after the holidays.

Now some of the comments are left for interpretation - with quotes saying it will not be available for retail until after the holiday season.

But does that mean it just will not be available at the retail stores until then - but will be available for online orders right away - with shipments to customers starting in December - in time for the holidays.  That is what I am thinking - actually I would not be surprised to see it go on sale on Apple dot com - with in 10 days of the Announcement - maybe even the same day.  And  the announcement that shipments will start right after Thanksgiving - with first orders in - being the first orders shipped.

And Apple anticipating that on-line orders will strip supply - which means nothing at Retail locations until after the holidays.

Or that could all just be really  really wishful thinking on my part.

Oh one of the sources saying availability will be some time out is John Paczkowski at Recode - who you know Apple likes to leak stuff to.

John's quote from his article was quote my understanding is that we’re unlikely to see it at retail until after the holiday season unquote.

Well is supplies are short and constrained for some reason - we might not see it at retail until mid next year - but that does not mean it will not be shipping from Apple dot com - Glass is half full glass is half full - Most think positive thoughts.

    Dear Rob,

Just a small correction to your report about Apple's 5s battery replacement program. It has to be within the serial number range AND fail the battery diagnostic test that the Apple Store will run.

    Regards,

    Best, Thom

Thanks Thom for that feedback - and here is some feedback from those listeners that partook in the iPhone 5 Apple replacement program.

    Hello Rob,

I'm the same person that emailed you about leaving apple for samsung only to get turned around.

One of the issues I had besides the small screen size was the battery life. It was terrible on my iPhone 5. Well I punched my serial # in after hearing about this and turns out i had a faulty battery and was eligible.

I made an appointment to see the Genius Bar at an Apple store and they swapped out my battery in about an hour. Awesome service. I must say my battery life now is better than my sold GS5. Who's the wall hugger now!

Now on to a Samsung rant. 1 week into owning my GS5 the charger cover fell off (it's the part that made the phone water resistant) called Samsung and they said that part is not covered under warranty and I'm sol. Luckily AT&T swapped my GS5.

    Hi Rob,

I bought my iPhone 5 on eBay back in March of this year and have been happy with it. I did notice that the battery charge wasn’t very robust, but I always just figured it to be one of those tradeoffs for having and using a smartphone all day. I even bought an external case with a 2300 mAh back up battery for $40.00 figuring that it would be cheaper than trying to get the actual phone’s battery replaced.

Anyway, when Apple announced the program to swap out certain iPhone 5 batteries, I checked my device and wouldn’t you know, it was covered. I made the appointment at my local Apple store and when I showed the tech my phone, I commented that my sleep/power button had also been giving me trouble. He verified the device’s serial number and confirmed the sleep button issue. He informed me that the button on the iPhone 5 was also a known defect with the iPhone 5 and that there was a program to fix it as well. He then told me that the battery replacement would take anywhere from one to three hours in the store, but that the button problem would necessitate the phone to be shipped off for repair.

I was pleased to find out that both my problems weren’t just particular to my phone and that there was a fix for them, but as I explained to him, being without my phone wasn’t going to work for me as it was my primary phone that I also use to run my business. I know Apple lends out replacement 16GB phones while the broken one is out for repair, but my device was a 32GB model and it would be a big time pain to start removing this and that for a week.

He proceeded to poke around on my phone and checked out the serial number again and told me that the Apple Care was still valid on the device. Then he said that he would just go ahead and give me a brand new phone instead.

I had no idea about the Apple Care as it wasn’t mentioned in the eBay listing and I never bothered checking for myself. You can imagine how happy I was to first find out that fixing the problems on my phone wasn’t going to cost me anything and then end up with a brand new device. I specifically asked him if it would be a reconditioned iPhone, but he said that no, it would be a brand new iPhone 5.

So…after swapping out the SIM on my old phone and inserting it into the new phone and activating it on my Ting account, I walked out of the Apple store thirty minutes later with a brand new iPhone 5 in my pocket. I got home and restored the backup I had done before going to the Apple store and was up and running like new in half an hour.

Not bad for buying an iPhone 5 on eBay for $325.00. I got that phone which I turned into a new device. Also included was a Ballistics case, three lightening cables, unused ear pods, a car charging cable and surprise, surprise…Apple Care that is still good for another five weeks. Good times baby!

    Take that Android…

    Hi Rob,

I had contacted apple due to battery issues one week before the program was made public. I live in Norway and iPhones have 2 years warranty here. My battery issues started with the unit overheating during charging and use, shorter battery life and unreliable battery charge % meter. Some days before contacting apple the screen popped out of the frame by about 1-2 mm on the top, due to a swollen battery.

I contacted apple, they sent the link for the iOS diagnose, which showed battery issues. They arranged for me to deliver the iPhone at a local electronics shop. A week later they called me to pick it up, and gladly I got a replacement unit.

I'm now waiting for the new iPhone 6 to be announced so I can decide when to sell this unit to get me a new one!

    Best regards

    Hi Rob,

Just wanted to let you know about my experience with Apple's iPhone 5 battery replacement program.  I had already replaced my battery with an after market company because it was giving me issues. Yeah I know, I should have done the apple care (insert ridicule here).  I went to the website to see if my device was included and should have been replaced.  The apple site told me that my battery had already been replaced and that I needed to contact apple for further information.

The site was very helpful and allowed me to set an appointment for apple to call me the same day.  When they called they asked why I had someone else work on my device, and then agreed to refund me the cost of the battery replacement.  They emailed a link where I could upload the receipt. Just waiting on the reimbursement check.

    Regards,

    Peter

    Austin, TX

Peter - thanks for that story - as I am sure there are others that did what you did and figured they are out of luck - so folks if you did get your battery replaced - and its serial number is one of the lucky lottery ticket winners - contact apple like Peter did and see about getting a refund check for what you spent to get it repaired on your own.

    Hi Rob,

Just wanted to give some feedback to you and the Tii community on the iPhone 5 Battery Replacement Program as covered in Tii item 0318.

I bought my iPhone 5 back in Jan 2012 and to be honest was never very impressed with the battery life - it certainly was never as good as that in my iPhone 4. I noticed over the past 6 months or so the battery life becoming very very poor - the battery could go from 30% to dead in a matter of a couple of minutes of use.

I first heard about the battery replacement program on Tii 0318 so I immediately investigated if the serial number of my phone was one of the phones covered by the program on the Apple Support website www.apple.com/uk/support/iphone5-battery/. As I am based in the UK I had to wait until the UK program became active 29/08 - I was very surprised to find out that my phone was indeed one of the units covered by the program. I was undecided if I would get the battery replaced or not given that I will be upgrading the phone shortly and the fact that there is not an Apple store in the city where I live. In the end I decided to get the battery replaced as I usually hand down my old phones to my daughter and I didn’t want her to have to suffer the same poor battery life as I had been doing.

I followed the instructions in preparation - i.e. full backup and turn off find my iPhone

Through the website I was also able to book an appointment with a Genius at the nearest Apple store me which is the New Apple Trinity Centre Store in Leeds UK (approx. 30 miles from where I live).

My appointment was booked for Tues 02 September at 11:10 - overall what a fantastic experience. Upon entering the store I was alerted on my phone through the Apple Store App to Check In for my appointment which I duly did. A genius then appeared within seconds and checked my phone out and ran some diagnostic tests which did indeed show that the battery was in need of replacement. He mentioned that they had not had many people in the store for the replacement program and indicated to me that the ‘issue’ was more prevalent in the US than the UK.

I had been fully expecting to be without my iPhone for a number of days but was pleasantly surprised to be told that the replacement would only take an hour. When I returned to the store an hour later the phone was ready for my collection having had the battery replaced. Furthermore everything was as I had left it with no need to restore from backup.

Overall a great retail experience - well done Apple

Thanks for all your you do with the show Rob - I listen very week.

    regards,

    Hi Rob,

The iPhone 5 battery replacement is a two-step process, at least for me. I went there, they tested my battery and found it is at just 35% of capacity. They said they will call me in about five days to bring my phone in for the replacement and it will take about an hour.

    Regards,

    Jon B

First thanks to all that sent in feedback - and it sounds like for all the experience was a very good one.  With regards to Jon B's comments at the end - it sounds like they are running low on Batteries - so if you delayed in getting the repair done - depending where you live there may be a delay in getting it replaced.  Obviously check with your local apple store - after you confirm your iPhone 5 is one of the luck lottery ticket winners - by checking your serial number at

    02Apple-Media-Advisory.html

Well Apple had a press release they put out this week that was titled

    Update to Celebrity Photo Investigation.

And well if you were living under a rock for the past week - you might not know what this is about - but chances are you were not living under a rock - and you know that naked pictures of Jennifer lawrence and other celebrities were released online.  And where did said naked pictures come from - well it looks like from the celebrities iCloud accounts.  Because yes - if you have naked pictures of your self and you are a celebrity the best place to put those pictures is you know in the cloud - because yeah nothing bad could possible happen if you did that.  Ummm Yeah.

Well some had speculated that iCloud itself was Hacked and per that here is Apples well lawyered up response.

    Quote

We wanted to provide an update to our investigation into the theft of photos of certain celebrities. When we learned of the theft, we were outraged and immediately mobilized Apple’s engineers to discover the source. Our customers’ privacy and security are of utmost importance to us. After more than 40 hours of investigation, we have discovered that certain celebrity accounts were compromised by a very targeted attack on user names, passwords and security questions, a practice that has become all too common on the Internet. None of the cases we have investigated has resulted from any breach in any of Apple’s systems including iCloud® or Find my iPhone. We are continuing to work with law enforcement to help identify the criminals involved.

To protect against this type of attack, we advise all users to always use a strong password and enable two-step verification. Both of these are addressed on our website at http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4232.

    unquote

Which well I have said before on this show - definitely set up two step verification - but it seems for those in hollywood - that if what they are doing is not 1 step or 12 steps - they really are not to into it.  Yeah so that 2 step thing is just a little too complicated for them.

Now I should point out anyone should feel safe placing their naked pictures in the cloud - and the real issue here is not two step verification - it is about the lack of punishment for those that hack into others accounts.  Or so I have read in a bunch of blog posts.  Problem with that line of thinking is - You then need all would be hackers to you know understand what the phrase - consequences for your actions mean - and yeah - good luck with that.

No system is 100% safe on the cloud - millions of credit cards were stollen from Target - thanks Target by the way.

And now lots of celebrity naked as in she has no cloths on - photos were stollen - and well this is not the first time - Paris Hilton pops to mind from years ago.  And it will not be the last time.

My recommendation is if you have any data / info / pictures you would not freely post on the web - then don't post them in the cloud - but if you feel that is what iCloud is there for - then definitely set up two step verification.

As what it seems happened here is that the hackers figured out what email address the celebs were using for their accounts - then they looked up person info on them and then used that info to get past the person questions verification step to get around the system locks.

    http://www.idownloadblog.com/2014/09/01/icloud-

    hacking-patched-find-my-iphone/

I don't want it to look like all was ok with Apples iCloud security - because even Apple does not think so - as they just patched what was a security hole in the find my iPhone service.  This hole allowed hackers to do a brute-force attack on Apple ID's

Previously Find my iPhone did not lock out a person after a few unsuccessful attempts.  This allowed attackers who could not trick iCloud with the answers to person questions - to put in a brute force attack with lots of common password names towards a users account on find my iPhone.

Then once you have the Apple ID / password - for find my iPhone - you could use it for iCloud.

Again - Apple has patched this vulnerability and it seems Apple is saying in the cased of the celebrity photos that were stollen - it was not this brute force attack that was used - but rather people spending lots of time researching answer to security questions and getting in that way - which would have all been thwarted had the celebrities has two step verification turned on - or if well there were no Nude photos of them up in the cloud.

Apple put out a page / post with the title - quote Common App Rejections unquote.

And this article goes over something Apple did that they have never done before that I am aware of and that is break down the top reasons why Apps get rejected.

According to Apple 14% are reject for More information needed.

8% for Bugs in the apps.

6% Did not comply with terms of Developer license agreement

6% UI to complex or not very good.

5% Names or Descriptions or screenshots not in sync with what the apps does.

4% App Name in iTunes Connect and on Device not similar

4% Apps with placeholder text - i.e. - not finished.

3% Inappropriate Ratings set for app.

2% Apps that are Beta or demos or trials or test versions.

That adds up to 58% of rejections.  Apple did not release what the top reasons of the other 42% were - but I was able to get the others of them from my contacts at Apple.

5% - App reviewer had fight with significant other before work today - app rejected.

4% - App reviewer stuck in long line at starbucks this morning - and they messed up their order - app rejected.

4% - It is a beautiful day outside and App reviewer is stuck inside looking at yet another Flappy bird clone - app rejected.

6% - Everyone keeps swiping left on the App reviewers tinder account - App reviewer swiping left on your app - app rejected.

    And

23% - App reviewer feeling a little down - needs a confidence boost - rejecting apps makes them feel better - app rejected.

So there you have it the 15 reasons why Apps are rejected from Apple sorta kinda.

Ok - Speaking of Apps being rejected.

There is an app called Disconnect Mobile and it was released to the iOS App store and the Android Google Play app store last month. The purpose of said app is pretty simple to help you the end user protect your privacy and block your usage info from Advertisers.  This Disconnect Mobile App works to block non-consensual 3rd party trackers from watching what you do on your device and collecting your info and it also block thousands of websites suspected of malware, spyware, phishing scams and more.  According to the devs. And also backed up by the EFF.

Both the iOS and Android versions of Disconnect Mobile were approved by each app store - but then one of those apps stores said - oooppps - sorry this app violates our terms and conditions and said App was yanked from that App store.  Now most of you are thinking - Yup there goes Apple with their heavy handed rules and they just yanked a really useful app.

And the EFF chimed in to say well basically they were not happy - and this is not the first time this company has blocked an app that would help protect users privacy.

And for those of you that thought it was Apple that blocked this App you would be WRONG  - see this app is still in the iTunes App store - it was Google that yanked it from the Google Play app store. Yes Google does yank Apps from time to time.  Seems when it comes to Google and - Malware - from them you get an mmmpph -- but hey if you create an app  to protect users privacy and block info from their most loved and cherished partners - Advertisers - then shame on you and out you go.

I have said this on the show many times before - When it comes to Apple - you are the customer. When it comes to Google and Android - The Advertiser is the customer and you are the product.  That is not a malicious slam on Android - it is well just the truth.

And This example just further cements my observations of Google and how they look at the end users.  Or as the EFF put it - quote  By removing these applications, we believe that Google is setting a dangerous precedent.  The Profits of Google's business partners should never come before the security and privacy of its users unquote - but sadly all of Googles past actions indicate that is exactly what they will continue to do.  Which is to serve up their users data and info to their Advertisers.  What is Googles moto?  Oh yeah -  Do no Evil -

    Hi, Rob.

To answer Alex"s question in episode 318 about an app that allows to delete multiple mails in any folder, I use Boxer ($9.99).

Not only it allows to select all mails in any folder to move to another one or just delete them, you can also select all mails from a single sender and delete/Archive/move them as well.

I've tried many other mail management apps but Boxer does a better job at this and in marking/auto handling spam as well (also marking it all for deletion).

It works with all types of mail accounts (Gmail, IMAP, Exchange, iCloud), except POP3 accounts which are of little use nowadays anyway.

    Regards,

    Fabio E

PS: The "one more thing" will be the iWatch!

    Hi Rob,

Two episodes ago you had a caller that wanted an app to track his location.

I recently did a bunch of hiking in the Adirondacks in northern New York and used an app called "TOPO maps" to find my location using my phone's GPS. I could create way points, and then guide myself to these points, and keep notes about the locations including time and date. It also shows me my current altitude, GPS position, or other programmable stats. It did require me to manually input waypoints and didn't track my progress, but I still found it super useful for not-getting-lost. I was also able to download the Topo Maps for off-line use, and could even search for points (like mountain tops) on the map when I had a cellular signal.

During this trip I also used an app called "run keeper" that kept track of my pace, my over-all altitude gain, and other fitness-type stats. It included a map that I could use to see my overall route and where I was in relation to where I had been.

As you might expect, to use theses apps I had to keep my phone on to find the GPS satellites (no airplane mode). To compensate for this I turned off cellular data for all apps while I was out, as well as wifi & Bluetooth and then had a backup battery with 5000 mAh capacity that lasted about 2+ charges, and I was able to get through an entire day (6:30 am- 10:30 pm) on this.

    Regards,

    - Jessi

    Hi Rob,

One app not mentioned in your last show about how to find your way back to a particular location is called iArrow. I used it with great success while hiking out west this summer.

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/474886025/popscope-

    a-simple-solution-to-better-selfies-and-v

Hey a little update on the Popscope Kickstarter Project.

I took the Popscope with me last weekend - when my Oldest son was in a triathlon up in Des Moines - it was the Hyvee kids fit championship.  Congrats to him for qualifying. There were 800+ kids competing in this event.

That meant there were well over 2,000 parents and grandparents at the event and that meant it was tough to get close to take pics or take video.

But I had the popscope with me and it made it easy to hold my iPhone above the crowd and take video - especially with him crossing the finish line.

But I was using it all day and had more than a few people ask me about it and say it was a great idea for getting their iPhones up above the crowd.

Also we used it to take some family selfies - that did not look awkward.  That again is per the timer feature in iOS 8.  So combined iOS 8 and popscope - it really improves selfies.

Thanks to the folks at Popscope for sending the sample - it really really came in handy last weekend - and I have some nice video and pictures because of it.

Popscope - is spelled - P o p s c o p e - one word - and is at kickstarter dot com.  Pricing is $35 for red or blue - $36 for Grey - $37 for Gold.  And $38 gets you any color and a hard protective case.

You have until Sep 22nd at 5:59 AM CT.  Or look for the link in the show notes for ep 319 at today in iOS dot com.

And congrats to my son for competing in his first national Triathalon event.  Proud papa says and beats chest.

One of the best things about apple events - is we can stop commenting on rumors for a while and talk about product - and we are almost there.

One 11th hour rumor coming out about the iWatch is that it will have NFC - as suggested earlier by Tony L earlier in this episode - which was sent in by him long before this latest rumor.

The curved screen rumor is back as well.  And the iWatch is meant to be a health monitoring sensor beast - with lost of sensors to track your metrics.

Again - the best part of the 9.9 event is a lot less of these sources in the know type articles.

    Are we there yet?

    1:01:52

    Hi Rob,

You had a gentleman who called in to your last show about the annoying pop-ups in iOS 7, that say things like "Cellular data is turned off for app blah blah blah..."  When of course, we know full well it's turned off, because we turned it off and don't want to be constantly nagged about it.  There are 3 solutions I can think of:

    1) Turn the cellular data option back on for that app. (Hey - it'll stop the annoying pop-ups!)

    2) Petition Apple.  This is likely to take a while, as it's really in the app developer's and the carriers' best interests for you to just turn your data back on again so you can keep using your app and burn through a bit more cellular data.

    3) Jailbreak your phone, add the repository repo.pnre.co as a source in Cydia and then install the "NoAnnoyance" tweak.  It's currently beta software, but it works great and offers loads of customization. It's also free :-)

I have so many good things to say about jailbreaking, I could take up your entire show.

Despite a few misguided and uneducated articles you'll find online, the only real downside to jailbreaking is the long wait time (pushing 6 months these days) for a jailbreak to come out for a new iDevice.

    Best regards,

    Paul.

    Hi Rob,

Every member of the Virginia Beach Police Department, Police Academy's recruit class has been issued an iPad for the duration of their time in the academy. This is interesting in itself, but the apparent reason for it, is that Virginia's Department of Criminal Justice Services has mandated the use of Apple products for all police academies in the state.

    http://www.igeeksblog.com/iphone-apps-to-find-and-delete-

    duplicate-contacts-on-iphone/

This next one is to mention a nice tutorial I came across that goes over how to find and delete duplicate contacts on the iPhone.  This is from Geeksblog dot com.  Link in the show notes for ep 319 - titled - Find and Delete Duplicate Contacts on iPhone - brilliant.

They go over a few different apps your can choose from - some free some cheap.  For the free ones they mentioned there is - SmartMerge,  and Cleanup duplicate Contacts,  and Clean up & merge and also ContactClean - one word.  Again an overview / tutorial is listed in the links in the show notes for ep 319.

If you have used any of these apps to clean up merge your duplicate contacts - please send in your thoughts on the apps you used.  call into 206-666-6364 thats 206-moon-dog - or send an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com.  Because well - I need to merge / clean up my contacts - I have a lot of duplicates - and I would love to hear which ones you used and what level of success or failure you had with the apps.  Thanks

    Hey Rob:

Thanx for the mention on #318...sorry - didn't intend for you to have to read the whole rambling ;) .....and I agree...."YIKES" with the AT&T scan thing.

Actually however, I am doubting that AT&T is scanning the device for "objectionable apps/content".

The agreement in 6.2 does give them the right to take a look at the network traffic when using their service to ensure compliance

    Copied below for reference

I did find this on OSX Daily for a few years ago:

     http://osxdaily.com/2011/05/09/how-att-detects-unofficial-tethering/

I know that the listener who mentioned this indicated that he was not using one of these apps for tethering, but

perhaps the app got started by accident or perhaps the app(s) simply got updated and AT&T is looking for traffic to/from specific sites etc.

This may also indicate why the AT&T people were not able to tell the listener which app was the offensive one(s). They may not know

and only see the traffic indicating that unofficial tethering is in use.....or perhaps unofficial tethering is a "potential possibility" on said device.

    regards,

    Mike.

PS - My vote for the "One more thing" announcement......the iWatch. I think they will save that for the very end.

    9.9.2014 Apple Event Rumor Bingo
    9.9.2014 Apple Event Rumor Bingo

    Click to get larger version

First - I would like to point out - not everything on the bingo card are things I think will happen. Some actually conflict with others. However, these are the top rumors out there leading into the 9.9.2014 event.  And no there is no Apple TV listed - it actually just missed the cut.

For those items I think are most likely to happen they are:

    - 4.7" iPhone
    - 5.5" iPhone
    - A8 Processor with M8 Motion Processor
    - Sapphire Glass - even if just for one or two specific options of the iPhone.
    - 13 MP rear Camera
    - iWatch - announced - and it being available in Dec 2014.
    And
    - 128 GB Version of the iPhone finally.

Those are the ones I think are the most likely to happen - and if they did - we get an X on the bingo card.

    Others likely to happen.

    - iPhone 4S killed off.  But I think the 5C and 5S remain active and for sale.
    - iPhone Power button moves to the side of the iPhone from the top.
    - 4.7" iPhone available on Sept 19th.
    - 5.5" iPhone not available until the end of October.
    - iPhone 6 and iPhone Air are the names for the 4.7" and 5.5" respectively.
    - a Barometer is added to the sensors
    - Camera Sticks out of the iPhone and is not flush with the back.
    - 2 GHz clock speed for the A8 - but not actually announced at the event.
    And
    - Apple introduces a reversible USB cable.

Others that might happen listed are:

    - Light up rear Apple logo
    - Wifi 802.11.AC - hold over from last years bingo card.
    - 4k Video recording and 4k video out - also hold overs from last year
    - NFC - again a holdover from last year and the year before.
    - 12 Hr 3G talk time - Yup Hold over from last year as well.
    - 2 GB Ram - You guessed it hold over from last year.
    And finally
    - iPhone 6 and 6L are the names used (I don't think that will happen)

Again Definitely not all these rumor will come to pass and if history repeats itself most will not.  But some will.
