    -------------------------------------

As you just heard Apple has released iOS 6.1.

How to upgrade your iPhone to iOS 6.1 from 5.x - First off sync over all your photos and videos - and then delete from the iOS device - this is easy on the mac side you use iPhoto - on the PC side use what you normally use.  But the key point make sure all the photos and videos from your camera roll have been sync'd to your computer.

Then go in and unlock your SIM card - well actually I mean remove the lock on your SIM card.  You can add it back when it is all done.

Next force quit all open apps - then go to settings - general - reset - reset network settings.

When your device reboots - go to settings and wifi and log back into your wifi connection.

Then connect your iOS device to your computer and sync it - then once it is sync'd - do a back up - and then sync again.

Over Kill is my middle name.

Once your do all that then you can do the update.  Well actually if you are coming from iOS 5.x you are probably jailbroken - which really means you need to do a restore first to wipe out the jailbreak and then do the upgrade.  If you try to just upgrade with out restoring - then you will get an error message saying it can't upgrade and then you click ok and it says it sees a phone in recovery mode would you like to restore and update - then you click on that.  Then it will upgrade to iOS 6.1.

If you think I am talking like someone with experience with that situation you would be correct - I decided to upgrade my iPhone 4S which was jailbroken to 6.1 from 5.1.1 and I wanted to see what happened if I tried just the upgrade - and well iTunes did not like that.  Not surprising.

The downside for a full restore and then upgrade is getting all your apps back on there.

But hey that is what all the back ups and sync's that I over did to start with were about - after it finally upgraded - to 6.1 - I restored from the previous back up - and a while later - over 2 hours later - all my hundred's and hundred's of apps finally made it over.

Don't forget to re-lock your SIM card.  Feedback for this upgrade has been mostly positive - I only had one person write in and say they had any sort of issue.  Yes - there are people on the forums complaining - but it is a very very small % overall.  It is just a very very small % of a very very large number is still a decent size number of people with issues.  Well guess what no upgrade has ever been 100% with out issues.  I am still a firm believer that many of the issues of user error or not doing proper prep work as described a minute ago.

Still as I have said for the past 5 years - don't be the first one to upgrade when the upgrade comes out if you don't like when things don't work perfectly - especially considering how slow the downloads are on the first couple of days of the upgrade.  If you ever complained about if toilet paper should be hung from the top or the bottom - or you don't like how your significant other folds towels - guess what you are not a good candidate for early upgrades.  Ok - so that all said - if you were waiting for the go ahead - There is it - go ahead and upgrade to iOS 6.1 - if you are jailbroken - we will talk about this later in the show.

Here is some feedback from those that did upgrade.

Me - Went great. No issue other than that whole having to restore thing. Working great since upgrade.

George P - writes So far so good.

    Here is another

Hi Rob - quick note - updated to 6.1. Took about 20 minutes. No issues that I can see. Using a 32 gb iPhone 4S.

    Regards,

    Randy

    Pittsburgh, PA

Hi Rob, To call someone I just clicked on a link in their email signature which had a phone number followed by "Ext. 131". It asked me if I wanted to dial and of course I said yes. Once the phone call was placed I noticed a red "End" button on the left side of the bottom of the screen, and to the right there was a black button with shaded out text that read "Dial 131". Much to my amazement, iOS interpreted the words Ext. after the phone number as an extension and peeled off the numbers that followed it to enable me to enter it with one button press.

So, in other words, when the phone is answered you have a choice; if it is a person you can just talk to them, but if it is a automated attendant, you can push the "Dial 131" button and it will dial the extension.

What the system actually did is translate the Ext. into a semi-colon following the number. This means you can enter any number into your address book in this manner and produce the same Dial Ext No. functionality.

Perhaps everyone knows about this, but it is news to me and I think it is very cool.

    Woody N

Hi Woody - this was actually in iOS 6.0 when it was released - but I can't remember talking about it much if at all - and since a new jailbreak is coming - more on that later - we will have quite a few listeners new to iOS 6 in the next week or two.  So good to talk about this now - as it is a cool tip.

    To the emails

    Hi Rob,

Per the iOS 6.1 update it contains improvements and bug fixes, including:

    • Purchase movie tickets through Fandango with Siri (USA only)
    • iTunes Match subscribers can now download individual songs from iCloud
    • New button to reset the Advertising Identifier
    • and LTE support for more carriers (complete list of supported carriers at apple.com/iphone/LTE/)

    Regards Thomas.

Thanks Thomas.  And per that last point on LTE Tim cook had stated last week that they were going from 24 carriers world wide to 60 carriers world wide that the iPhone 5 works with their LTE -

and this upgrade is a big part in getting those new 36 carriers support to LTE on the iPhone 5.  Now you do need to check the page mentioned - apple.com/iphone/LTE to see if your Carrier is supported and if you have the right iPhone 5 for your carrier.

Per the Reset Advertising Identifier - or as Apple internally calls it the Tin foil hat feature - it helps those paranoid that Advertisers can figure out who they are by the apps and ads they have seen and clicked on.  This allows you to change the identifier to your iOS device to a new random ID and then change it again and again and so on and so forth.  All the time realizing that guys behind the secrets to getting out of traffic tickets or getting a lower loan rate or providing an on line degree - well they will no longer be able to go through their billions of ad impressions and zero in on your so as to offer you up a special ad you will not be able to refuse either that or put you on some special government watch list.  That said - Apple has now made it possible to click on ads and still stay one step ahead of the man.  Just Sayin.

One very interesting stat in the Apple press release is that iOS users - almost 300 million of them to be precise have upgraded to iOS 6.x prior to Monday's upgrade.  That is simply an amazing number in 5 months time 300 million iOS users upgraded to the most recent level of the OS.  Considering there have been 532 Million iOS devices sold all time as of the end of December - that is 56% of all iOS device ever.  Now many are not working any more - so really it is probably a little over 60% of active iOS devices are on the latest major revision of the OS.  How does that compare to Android.  Well glad you asked.  As of the end of December - which is 7 months after the release of 4.1 Jelly bean - at whopping 10.2% of Android users are on the latest version.  Worse yet over 59% are on a version that is at least three major revisions old or older.  That would be versions 2.3 or older.  Ouch it really sucks to be a developer for Android.  And actually it sucks to be those providing services that might be accessed by Android devices - Just today I had someone email me about an HTML5 player and it not working with android devices - when I asked him what version he was running - it was Android 2.3.6 - and he wanted to know why the HTML 5 player was not working - umm because you are using an ancient version of Android - that is why - it took all my self control to not say - Dude you have an android phone deal with it and get used to disappointment.  It is like asking for support for Windows 95. just sayin

You have to love wall street and by love I mean scratch ones head.  Apple releases the greatest quarterly report ever for any tech company. Numbers that every other company in the world would kill for and Apples stock drops.  Then Apple goes out Tuesday morning and announces a 128 gb version of the iPad maxi - we are talking a minor minor addition to its product line and the stock goes up - yup you gotta love wall street and by love I of course mean shake ones head.

Oh I guess I should mention in greater detail Apple put out a press release about a new version of the iPad - a 128 GB version.  The pricing will be $100 more than the 64GB version for both Wifi and Cellular models.  This new version will be available on Feb 5th just in time for Valentines day.  This version had been rumored for about 2 days when someone noticed in the iOS 6.1 code that there was a provision for the 128 GB version.

For those that the iPad is your computer - doubling of the storage space I can see as big plus - especially if you can't always rely on the cloud to get to your documents.

Kudos go out to the twitter user @ineal - who seems to be the first one to notice the code calling out the higher storage option iPad.

9 top 5 mac gets the kudos for getting the pricing right before the official announcement.  Hey if I am going to slam blogs for bogus reports - I also need to give out kudos for when some get it right.

Some may wonder exactly what Apples reasoning is for releasing the iPad maxi mondo - or what ever you want to call the new 128 GB iPad.  Some would say it is for College students - others for Government use - others say it is for enterprise use - and others it is geared towards the video producers.  Regardless of what niche this is for - one thing is certain - the timing of the release was geared towards Microsoft who next week will also be releasing the Surface Pro Tablet on Feb 9th 4 days after the iPad maxi mondo. Microsoft I guess is releasing it on Saturday so that people have a chance to wait over night.  Anyway the $899 Surface Pro will have 64 GB of storage or should I say 64 GB of storage chips.  Actual storage that the user can you know use - that is well just 23 GB - that's right - just 36% of the storage is available to the user.  At $799 - the iPad maxi Mondo on the other hand has over 120 GB of storage available for the end user or about 100 GB of extra storage.  Of course for another $100 the Surface Pro users could upgrade to 128 GB of storage chips which would give them around 87 GB of storage.  You know sometimes Microsoft makes it really really easy for me to trash them on the show.

It does seem MS has found one way to help the Surface Pro vs the iPad - and that is by not releasing MS Office for it.  When Balmer was asked about the iPad and Office he gave a terse or ballmerish reply of quote I have nothing to say on the topic unquote.  Still there are rumors out there that Office for iOS was coming in March of 2013 - we shall see - In the mean time Pages, Keynote and Numbers will allow you to open Word, Powerpoint and Excel documents respectively.  I use those three on my mac and get along just fine.  But still it seems with no Office for the regular Surface and the poor sales of the Surface and likely poor sales of the Surface pro - plus MS not wanting to give Apple 30% of the sales revenue of Office via the App store - it likely will be a while before we see Office officially for iOS.

Ok - lets talk rumors for a second - because they are getting crazy again. First with the release of the iPad maxi mondo - it likely now means the iPad 5 will not launch until the Fall along side the next iPad mini.  That also likely means an earlier release for the next iPhone - the iPhone 2013 or iPhone 5S or iPhone 7 or 6 or whatever - since I do think Apple will try to space the releases this time around.  That would mean we should start seeing images of components in 3, 2, 1.  And yup here is the first one a french site No where else dot fr has photos of what they claim to be the new speaker enclosure for the next gen iPhone.  Which is kind of like when you hear about a archeologist finding a single bone in a cave and saying the person it belonged to in a new species and they looked like this. Huh - You got that from a single bone from a finger how?  Heck how did you even know it was from a human.

And in this case how do they know it is from the next gen iPhone - oh well - these had to start.  The next round of rumors comes from iLounge and give some recent hits on the rumor side - I figured I would mention it - and they say they have a photo of the Low cost BRIC nation iPhone.  This is the plastic iPhone.  Esentially it is an iPhone 5 - screen size wise - but with a cheaper case and probably other corners are cut - well not corners of the device - but lower cost components -

like a lower cost camera module or maybe a lower cost speaker module.  Essentially iLounge is saying it will be a plastic cross between the iPhone 5, iPod touch with a shape like the iPod Classic.  Again this will be geared probably to start in China - can you say China Mobile.  Then probably out to the other BRIC countries and other developing nations or places where there is no phone subsidies.  I really hate mentioning this as I really did not believe in the low cost iPhone - but given iLounges recent history with rumors and a pic and well Wallstreets begging for Apple to expand iOS's market share at all costs - well it looks like it might actually happen and sometime in the first half of this year.

Of course it is tough to know which rumors to believe in like I said it has been crazy lately - luckily the folks at Cnet actually put together a list of recent next gen iPhone rumors.  Here are the ones just from the past 10 days.

    1. Low cost iPhone - the plastic iPhone I just mentioned.

    2. images of next gen iPhone parts - the ones I mentioned before that.

    3. upgraded iPhone rear camera - to 13 Mega pixels.

    4. renderings of what a 4.8 inch iPhone would look like

    5. Bigger iPhone coming this year.

    6. 4.8 inch iPhone coming in June.

And that was the last 10 days.  Earlier this month there were another dozen rumors everything from new display tech to an iPhone mini to well you get the picture - it is crazy times on the rumor front.  As always only time and some leaked photos from an Apple supplier will tell.

    Hi Rob,

For the guy who didn't want his filtered photos to save on twitter or instagram.

On Instagram, go to your profile, then up in the top right corner is the settings button, and in here is "save to library", and a switch that can be turned on or off. If turned off, the filtered photos won't save to the library.

    Hi Rob,

I have a few answers for the person trying to edit with VoiceOver on

the iPhone. It takes some getting used to, but is indeed possible. If

the person is comfortable with editting text on the Mac (an iMac was

indicated, so I'm assuming) the cursor moves in the same way. Use the

rotor gesture (take two fingers on the screen, hold your phone steady,

and rotate your hand as if turning a dial) until you hear the desired

element you want to move by--words, characters, or lines. Then flick

up or down to move forward or backward by that element. To quickly

jump to the top or bottom of a text field, double tap and VO will

announce where the insertion point is moved to.

Can't help with touch typing and Zoom, but can shed some light on why

the iPhone and Mac voices are different. Copyright aside, it comes

down to specs. Alex (the default Mac voice) takes up quite a bit of

memory and processor power, and that is why he's not on the iPhone

    yet. Here's hoping.

What I cannot seem to figure out is a good and reliable way to pinch

on the iPhone for selecting stuff to cut and paste. People say

rotoring is one of the more complex gestures; I beg to differ.

    Thanks again Rob.

    Sincerely,

    Chelsea

    Hi Rob:

In episode 255, you responded to a request for recommendations on learning iOS programming.

I have recently started down this path and can recommend lynda.com. It is a "paid" solution....

but I have found the video tutorials to be of an exceedingly high quality. If folks looking into this

have a programming background (specifically with C++, C#, or Java) I can recommend that the "regular" subscription would suffice.

the higher level subscription allows you to download the code samples provided by the instructor, but

I have found that these are not needed for me.

My 11 year old daughter was very disappointed to hear your news that Lego MindStorms will now be supporting iOS...

when I told her that daddy was going to make her play with these so that he can "help" ;)

    warmest regards,

    Mike P

While most of the press was beating Apple up the past year about its supply chain - they barely if ever gave Apple credit for being out in front in holding their supply chain accountable for workers violations. Well in apples supplier report they indicated they found one of their suppliers to be using under age workers and they fired them and cut ties and then turned them into the authorities.  Sure reports like this don't sell papers or drive blog traffic - but kudos to CNET for covering the story.  A quote from Apple Quote Underage labor is a subject no company wants to be associated with, so as a result I don't believe it gets the attention it deserves, and as a result it doesn't get fixed like it should, unquote - Jeff Williams Apples senior VP of Operations.  Kudos to Apple for having the where with all to not only do something about labor issues but also report on those issues when they discover them.

When I was at CES it seemed everywhere I looked there were iOS accessories - which makes sense as I really was just at the iLounge area.  However it does seem that was also a theme through out CES as a whole.  Aspotter collected data on 3200+ exhibitors at CES this year and discovered that roughly 18% or 1/5th or 2 out of 10 were in the biz of making accessories for iOS devices.  They found 937 accessories from 590 manufactures at CES.  25% were speakers.  25% were cases.  I know I saw a couple of electronic stimulation devices for women if you know what I mean that were controlled by the iPhone.  I will talk about more of what I found at CES in future episodes - but it is interesting to see that CES is so influenced by iOS accessories - should make it easy for me to get a press pass again next year.

Hey do you have an iPad mini - well Cnet just put out a post titled 25 essential iPad mini tips - and I am going to go over each one in great detail right now - or you know what why don't you just look for the link titled 25 essential iPad mini tips in the show notes for episode 256 over at today in iOS dot com - and that way I don't get angry emails about reading off 25 tips on the show.  Plus most of them have been talked about before on the show.  But if you are new to the iPad mini and iOS it is a good read.

    Hi Rob,

Per ep 255 and speed tests in China - I used the app SPEEDTEST, which I used to test 3G speed in China,

It resulted in a download speed of 1.80Mb/s, and upload speed 0.26Mb/s, this was inside an office building downtown.

    Best Regards,

    Bertie

    Hi Rob,

I'll like to ask you or your listeners if can give me some advice on getting the Iphone 5.

Me and my wife, both are using the Iphone 4, grandfather unlimited data, unlimited Text, 1400 shared minutes with a family plan with AT&T, bill around $200/month for the two phones.

Are we going to feel a great difference btw iphone 4 and 5?

Which deal will you/or listeners suggest? (Change carrier, AT&T Office, Radio Shack upgrade, AT&T web Upgrade, buy new ones with new contract with AT&T and then sell iphone 4's on ebay?, etc). BDW existing iphone 4's on excellent condition.

    Best Regards,

    Luis A from Anaheim, California.

Per Kickstarter projects - this week there is one called Vendetta Online - Initially on this one they had less than $1,000 pledged on 1/18 - by 1/30 they were up to $28,000 and they have a goal of $100,000.  this one actually has another 24 days to go expiring on Feb 24th at 7:00 PM ET.

What is Vendetta ONLINE - It is an existing independent cross platform space MMORPG that they would like to drastically expand and bring to the iPad.  MMORPG of course stands for Massively multiplayer online role playing game.  And well if you knew what that acronym meant when I said it then you should check out the Kickstarter project by searching for Vendetta online two words in kickstarter.  If you needed me to explain it - then this one is not likely for you.

Nice posts going around about Apogee equipment for recording music on an iPad and also about ik Multimedia for all their equipment for the iPad. Both of these companies are turning the iPad into your digital hub for creating quality music. What I would love to see is some of your setups out there - have you added equipment for making music with on your iPad from either of these companies or others. Send in your pics and descriptions of your set up - and links to your sites and I will put up some posts on Today in iOS about your set ups. Also include some music you created or let me know of past shows when I featured your music - and I will link to those episodes or add it to new ones. I am a firm believer that the iPad is more than a consumption device it is a creation device and would really like to show case how some of you have used it as such.

    Hi Rob,

I have heard you talk about strait talk and wanted to know if I can take my I pad over to them. Do I need to get it unlocked.

    I have two

    Regards,

    Lawrence

Lawrence - I am not sure - if anyone has been able to get their AT&T iPad to work on Straight talk - please let us know and let us know what you needed to do - and how much it is costing you to be on straight talk and what that plan gets you.

    206-666-6364 - that's 206-moon-dog.

    Hello Rob,

Two app reviews/comments I wanted to throw out there. The first is a

    game called iAssociate 2.

    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/iassociate-2/id370423110?mt=8

This is a word association game where you have to not think too hard

but figure out what words are associated to what other words e.g 5

letters, associated with computer and fruit = Apple. It takes me

awhile to complete a level, so I am fine with the free ones they give,

though I did buy the Apple-themed level and had a lot of fun. Always

happy to support a dev willing to make a game VoiceOver accessible,

and these guys certainly have. There are two VO modes for those new

and experienced in the game, and a sound is played every time a

correct word/letter is inputted. Awesome for a college student like me

who doesn't have a lot of time; check it out.

Some comments on the LookTel money reader app: Really works

brilliantly. Unlike some other apps claiming to do the same thing,

this one uses object recognition (video vs. stills) to find the money,

so you don't have to worry about alignment and trying to get a good

photo. Saved me many times when I lived in an apartment over the

summer--I could give the pizza guy the right tip!

    Regards,

    Chelsea

For those of you with the Tii app you received a push last weekend telling you of a free app to get while the getting was good.  That was the app Gridlee.

What is special about this app - well let me read one of the reviews.

At first glance, this game might seem quite underwhelming, but stick with it and you'll find a number of features under the bland exterior that make this game so fun, it's almost as if you're playing a whole load of completely different games.

    Unquote

See with this app you can play a whole load of different games - by side loading the games boot roms - as in a bunch of classic Arcade ROMs.

First off major kudos to Brent for the heads up.

Per the status of the app well for some strange reason it is still up on the iTunes app store - which just must mean someone from Apple that makes the calls to yank apps like this - they are on vacation this week.  That is about the only reason I can see it still being up.  Anyway it is free and likely up for a limited time and if you own an iCade or just like old time arcade games - search for G r i d l e e in the iTunes app store - it is a free app.  Get it while the getting it good.

For those with the App - there is a link in the show notes titled - How to load ROMS into the grid lee MAME emulator App - check that out for more info on how to do that - I also hope to get a tutorial up on the site as well.

Again no jailbreak needed for this.

Thanks to Robin for sending in that link to the video and for also mentioning she was able to get Pitfall 2 which isn't the pitfall 2 but a cheap knock off from www.rom-world.com

If you have gotten an ROM's that are working with Gridlee - please email me the info on which rom's you were able to get to work and where you got them from - I will then pull them together in the tutorial I put out.

Send that info to today in iOS at gmail dot com.

One more tip from Robin - when searching for ROMS google - 0.139u1 space ROMS

Ok - lets talk jailbreaking - because most likely sometime between when this episode ep 256  went live and when the next episode ep 257 goes live - the long long awaited jailbreak for iOS 6 will finally be released.  There is already an official site for it at e v a s i zero n dot com. The jailbreak is not yet live buy again it will be shortly.  So what will the jailbreak work on and what do you need to do to jailbreak - well they have given some info.  You will need quote

    • 5 minutes of your time!
    • A computer, running Windows (XP minimum), Mac OS X (10.5 minimum) or Linux (x86 / x86_64)
    • An iPhone, iPad or iPod running iOS 6.0 through 6.1 (you may check in Settings / General / About => Version)
    • A USB cable to connect the device to the computer

    unquote.

So yes any iOS device running iOS 6.x - if you are jailbroken now - you will need to restore your device and then upgrade to iOS 6.1 before you do the jailbreak - again you must remove the jailbreak to upgrade.  Note if you are unlocked and did the unlock via a jailbreak - stay away for now.

Actually I will say this - don't be one of those to do the jailbreak right away.  I know many of you are itching to do it.  But the first few days of a new jailbreak - are times when things don't go well traditionally.  usually there are a few updates right away.  I say wait at least a week - better to wait two weeks.  I will be putting out a tutorial as I always do once this is live and it is looking like it is working ok - My tutorial will not be the first one out there - but typically my tutorials are very easy to follow for anyone of any tech level.

Here is the big issue of jailbreaking right away - too many people do it - and that causes issues with Cydia having its servers overloaded and that causes all kinds of issues during the jailbreak.

If you are someone that needs your iOS device for work - wait until after my next episode or better yet wait 2 weeks from when it is released - let all the crazies get theirs done first.

And please don't email me for help prior to my next episode if you brick your iPhone because you did not listen.  I will likely be waiting a few days before I do my jailbreak.

Finally if you are not going to head my warning - make sure you back up and get all your photos off your iOS device before you do the jailbreak.  remove the unlock on your sim card.  And well good luck and report back to me if you do jailbreak on how it went for you.

I will NOT repeat NOT be sending out a push when the jailbreak is available - I did that in the past - and people mistook the push to be me saying it was ok to jailbreak - they had issues and then nasty emails did they come.  Which is also why I did not send out a push for iOS 6.1 - again I wanted to make sure it was going well before I talked about it.  Which it is.  Next episode I hope to be telling you the jailbreak is working well - but until then please be patient and wait - let me and others be your Guinea pigs.

    Hi Rob,

We recently returned from an 11 day vacation through Washington, Oregon, and California, with the highlight of the trip being 4 days at Disneyland.

Two days into the trip, the cable charger/connector for our older Garmin died. The nice, but clueless young man at Best Buy told us said cable was no longer available (untrue, it's in the mail).

Since we had two iPhone 5's and one 4S between the adults, we decided to try Apple Maps, Google Maps, and Motion X GPS equally on the trip. All three apps had equal success and failure, which surprised us. All three had features we liked and disliked. There were no horrible disasters, just continuous frustrations with all three apps.

Our favorite navigation tool is still the Garmin and it will be ready for the next trip this spring!

PS--I loaded the retired 3GS and 2nd gen. iPod Touch with preschool activities & games. They were a HUGE hit with the grandkids (2 & 5 yrs)!

    Regards,

    Brenda

    Transcript for Episode 255

    -----------------------------------

A quick note - today's episode starts out with a bunch of financial news and analysis and well head scratching - While this is not an investment show - I think talking about financials in today's episode to the degree I do is warranted - In full and fair disclosure - I own Apple stock and am long on Apple and have been for some time. If you decide to make buy or sell stock on what you hear on this show - well that is on you.  Remember all stock buys are a basic form of gambling and you should not invest what you can not afford to loose.  That should make the lawyers happy and on with the show.

Ok Lets start in with the big news from the week - Apples Quarterly conference call.  Apple reported net Revenue of $54.5 Billion - a new record for Apple - they also reported cash on hand of $137.1 Billon a new record for everyone.  Apple actually increased their cash on hand by 15.8 Billion in the last quarter alone - and that is after paying out $2.5 Billion for dividends and taking out another $2 Billion for future stock buy backs.  Apple generated all this revenue and cash by selling 47.8 Mil iPhones last quarter along with 22.9 Mil iPads.  Both new records for Apple.  The iPod line as expected sold less than a year ago - only selling 12.7 mil iPods last quarter vs 15.4 mil in the year ago quarter.  That the iPod line continues to shrink with regards to year over year numbers is not surprising - given the cannibalization from the iPhone line.  Apple did not give exact numbers for iPod touch - just as typical saying over 50% of iPod sales were for the iPod touch.  Through the end of the quarter Apple has sold over 530 Mil iOS devices not counting Apple TV's.

Other news from the call - the iPhone is now out to over 100 countries - as expected.  The iTunes App store is now available in over 155 countries.  There are 250 mil iCloud account.  Apple TV sold over 2 Mil units last quarter vs 1.3 mil for the quarter before.  Uncle Gene Munster - how is forever predicting an full size large screen Apple TV - of course asked about his mythical unicorn of a device - and Tim Cook would not bite - Only saying Apple is very happy with Apple TV sales and they are looking at that market space with wider eyes.

Tim cook also mentioned that the iPad mini was supply constrained all last quarter and remains that way still today - and that it would not get out of supply constraint until the end of March.

That means chances of seeing a new iPad mini any time soon - are slim to none.  Expect a fall upgrade of the iPad Mini best case.

Now I also would not expect all Apple products to update in a short window again - as Tim commented a little on all the products updating at the same time and gave the impression that is not something they planned for nor wanted to repeat.  That means - Yes expect some update announcements before the fall - likely in mid to late Q2 for the first update - which should be the iPad maxi - it needs the stereo speakers to start and for its exterior to better match up with the iPad mini.

Initial Reaction after the conference call was a negative reaction to the call with apples shares down quite a bit in after hour trading - On Thursday during real trading hours - Apple stock finished the day at $450 down from about $65 from where it end the day on Wednesday.

Still - I guess Record revenue - record cash levels - record iPhone and record iPad sales don't mean much.  Wallstreet seems to want to see better market share numbers - forget the % of profits apple makes - it just seems many are hung up on Market share at all costs.  Why Why Why - Sure Android is selling and activating more devices - but all that most users are doing is making phone calls with those android devices.  For the most part they are not buying apps or anything else with their android phones.  I just don't get wall street and the idiots calling for more market share at all costs - including a low cost no profit iPhone for international markets - why?  You would think it is profit share not market share wall street would be asking for.  You know the show me the money line.

I guess what it is is that some investors are really scarred that what happened in the PC wars will happen in the smartphone wars.  And well the correlation is not even close to the same. Developers are making money - much much more money with iOS - and that is not likely to change.  iOS is much more secure of a platform - and that means it is business friendly.  Business is where Apple lost the PC wars - accountants and IT managers.    Today those correlations just don't add up.  But still fear is a big negative on stocks - eventually Wallstreet will wake up to being mislead and Apple stock will take off again.

Yes if you are keeping track at home - Apple generated over 40 Billion in Profits last year.  A record for any tech company in a single year ever.  And Apple stock is at $450 again Why?

But hey if Market share is what floats some boats - in the US at least Market share for smartphones last quarter was estimated at 51% for the iPhone.  At Verizon 6.2 Mil iPhones sold last quarter out of 9.8 mil total smartphones. So over 63% of smartphones at verizon sold were an iPhone.  At AT&T it was even higher.  AT&T sold 8.6 Mil iPhones last quarter out of 10.2 Mil smartphones overall.  Let me say that again 8.6 out of 10.2 or over 84% of smartphones sold at AT&T were iPhones.  Leaving just 16% for Android, Blackberry and Windows Phone combined.  Ouch.  Again over 84% of smartphones sold at AT&T and over 63% at Verizon were an iPhone last quarter - which is even more impressive if you remember all the stories about Both Verizon and AT&T employees pushing people strongly sometimes away from an iPhone.

So at the end of the quarter at least at the biggest US carriers - Apple won the market share battle - and it was not even remotely close.

And Apple stock is down to $450 why?

Samsung reported their quarterly numbers today and Android fan boys are tripping over themselves to pump up the numbers.  Seems Samsung reported for their mobile line - smartphones and tablets they had 5.08 Billion dollars in Profit which was double from a year earlier. But lets put that in perspective. If you break out Apples mobile / iOS products. They represented 77.8% of Apples Revenue. Thats 10.2 Billion dollars in Profits. So yes Android Fan boyz - Apple doubled Samsungs Profits last quarter on a head to head comparison of mobile products.  Yeah - that is not something you are likely to see posted up much in blogs - but it should be.  Sure Samsung sells more cellphones than Apple and they might even sell more "smartphones" than Apple - but many of them are low cost - almost no profit devices.  When you compare the Galaxy and Note lines to the iPhone - the iPhone sells in much greater numbers.  We are talking about over 219 million iPhone 4, 4S and 5's sold vs just 131 Million Galaxy S1's S2's S3' and Note1's and 2's.  This according to data from Raymond James.  But again raw numbers are nothing - it is all about show me the money - and in that realm - Apple last quarter again as I mentioned more than doubled the profits from its iOS product lines vs ALL of Samsungs phone and tablet lines.  Which again brings be back to Apple stock did what?

Part of the reason for Apple stocks push down earlier this month and for the past week had been rumors about suppliers to iOS devices getting their orders cut.  And to that Tim cook actually took some time in the call to address.  Here is what tim had to say:

PLAY TIM COOK COMMENTS -- 25:08 MARK.

So at least from Tim's comments - anyone reporting on rumors or speculating on those rumors is well clueless - He is talking about you WSJ.

Switching gears - Tip time - I get asked quite often what is a good resource to learn how to develop an app for iOS - and I pretty much always mention the free Standford courses on iTunes U - and good news they have a new course on iTunes U - look for the link in the show notes titled - Free Stanford course on iOS development - for more info.  This of course covers iOS 6.  Really if you are looking to start developing - this is where to start.

Into the email bag we go.

    Hi Rob,

I too have seen the capcha error using google search  I have an iPhone 4 and using Virgin Mobile in Canada. This doesn't come up all the time and only comes up over 3G. If I go to Google.com I don't get the error it only happens from the google search bar.

    regards,

    Ross C

    St. John's

    Newfoundland Canada

    Hey Rob,

Per the issue with Google periodically preventing a search because it thinks you are a bot. My wife has the same issue. She and I both have a 4s on AT&T. The problem happens on wifi and 3G. I have never seen it happen on mine, though.

The Genius Bar couldn't do anything with the phone, and suggested somehow the phone has been blacklisted by Google and that we should try them for support.

My wife's fix is to use Yahoo.

I will be interested to hear if this is common, and how to fix it.

    Regards,

    Randy

    Pittsburgh

    Hi Rob,

Per the google search issue - Yah, Me too.

I am an Onavo User  (still) on ATT

    Using Google as Search Engine.

I then go to Safari and do a search there, and it works fine.

    Happens every so often.

Not nasty enough to look for a fix... yet, but it is real.

    Regards,

    Robert T

    Hi Rob,

Per the google search issue - I to have had that issue - My device is iPhone 4 on AT&T; it is not jail-broken.  I have not figured out why the problem occurs nor have I figured out a solution.

    Regards,

    Gail

And there were others emailing in with saying they had the issue as well - the only thing is no one seems to know how to fix said issue - so if you know a fix to this issue - now is your time to shine and be a hero to many - give us a call to 206-666-6364 - 206-moon-dog if you know a solution for those that have the captcha issue with google search on their iOS device.

    Hey Rob,

just writing for the guy with the original iPod touch, I had one for a long time and now my little sister uses it. The key to using any old touch is of course to not update your apps once you've been left behind by apple. You are still able to do anything you could do before, unless you loose  a web service because of an out dated version of the app. Things that still work well are, as you said as a media player, also as a planner using the calendar, a news reader, web browsing, note jotting, older offline games, and social media. You are actually probably better off with a 1st gen as an old device than a 2nd gen because after the update to 4.0 the 2nds really started having issues, although we did just give my wife's little sister an old 2nd as a  gaming device and it works well for her. That's the nice thing about apple products, most of them are still working and can just pass down the line.

    regards,

    Ben in Utah

    Hi Rob,

Per an original iPod touch -

what about putting the ipod on a dock and use it as a clock or a digital photo album ?

    Regards,

    Tash

    Hi,

Just listened to Tii  for Saturday. This podcast is really amazing!

Heard you asked how new iPad with 4th Gen cellular works in mainland China (if my English didn't fail me), where I am, well, the 4G licence hasn't been approved yet, though it is said 4G should be in market this year, 2013, so basically we're stilling using 3G now and in hope we can have access to 4G asap...

    Best Regards,

    Bertie L

Lots of posts up recently about Apples Tablet share and it sliding and or the iPad Mini not helping. BS - Total Fracking BS. And not just because many of the posts link back to an article from Digitimes - although that is a big part of it. The problem is people keep talking about Amazon's kindle fire eating up Market share - based on WHAT? Amazon has never released numbers - actually the only manufacturer of tablets that has released numbers is Apple - Again Amazon never has and Microsoft is likely never to acknowledge sales numbers - and really when talking about the surface sales should be in quotes.  Just sayin . So how can anyone say with any certainty - what the actual tablet market share is for the iPad and if it is going up or down.  They can't - at least not until some of the others start reporting numbers - all we have to go by is usage numbers - and well in that case the iPads are well above 80% for web usage.

Apple stock is at $450 again why?

Ok - before you say well Rob put your money where you mouth is - Well I did - On Thursday in one of my IRS accounts I sold all my Facebook stock - which I made a nice profit on and purchased Apple stock with everything I had in that account.  So yes I have even more Apple stock now.  Note - this is not the first or even second time Apple stock has dropped this far percentage wise from a peak.  It did so 5 years ago when it dropped from $200 to $120 a share.  Then later in 2008 it dropped from $180 to $80.  It then went on to other peak and pull backs - but those were two of the biggest.  Granted the pull back to $80 was in great part to the crash of 2008 - but the first pull back was 100% about the stock getting to far out ahead of where it should be and a correction.  That is not the case right now - it is really just about fear and well some stupidity.  I mean how else can you explain Amazon sitting at a market cap of a whopping 124 Bil vs Apples 424 Bil - when Apple generated 13.8 Bil in profits last quarter alone vs Amazon which has generated about 5 Bil in profits combined since 2003.

A lot of rumors and speculation about iPhones with larger screens - but I will not go into any of them because as I see it - none of it makes sense - since the Galaxy SIII and notes are about 1/3 as popular as the iPhone - Apple must do a larger screen or so goes the logic of the blogs. But you know what - I like the one handed use of my iPhone as is. I don't need nor want to be lugging around a backpack for my smartphone - just sayin. Here is What Tim cook had to say

PLAY TIM COOK COMMENTS - 23:00 mark

So Yes Tim Cook pretty much killed those rumors saying the current size is perfect for one handed use……. And the folks at youporn breathed a sigh of relief.  But all joking aside about 50% of the iPhones sold at Verizon were of the smaller iPhone 4 / 4S size last quarter not the larger iPhone 5 size.  So 63% of Verizon smartphone sales are iPhones and 50% of them are the smaller size screen on the iPhone - That tells me one thing - between a choice of $100 or $200  or a bigger screen - half the people choose the money.  So until we start really seeing some good leaked components or more - I am not buying the larger iPhone screen size rumors - especially when people are calling it the iPhone Math?  Talk about lost in translation.  I am guessing they meant iPhone plus - not iPhone math.  Whatever - not buying that rumor regardless of how you translate it.

I talked about this back in October and just want to briefly mention it again - come Jan 26th - unlocking your iPhone will become illegal.  Now that means you unlocking it is illegal - it does not mean getting an unlocked iPhone from Verizon or AT&T or Sprint or Apple is illegal - so you will still be able to get an unlocked iPhone - just not legally unlock yours on your own - you will need your carrier to do it for you.  If you are thinking it is BS that the librarian of Congress should rule that unlocking the iPhone somehow violates the DMCA - yup - I hear you on that and so does the EFF - that is the Electronic Frontier Foundation - Whom said quote "Arguably, locking phone users into one carrier is not at all what the DMCA was meant to do. It's up to the courts to decide." unquote.   Yeah more on this one to come in the future.

Hey Rob - you finally talked me into buying the Tii app. I love the notification sound used in the app. Just wanted to let you know.

    Regards,

    Darrin

Hi Darrin - thanks for the note and for supporting the show - folks if you want to best consume this podcast - then the Tii app is for you - as Darrin mentioned it has push notifications to let you know when the latest episode is up - and also when there is breaking iOS news or offers.  The Tii app is just $2.99 in the iTunes app store - search for Tii.  Thanks for your support.

    Hi Rob:

Is it me or do think its odd that apple still uses Google map data for iCloud based fond my iPhone?

    Davis

Well Davis they do call it find my iPhone - not point me in the general direction give or take of my iPhone.  Just sayin -   Sorry that was just too easy to pass up.

    Hi Rob,

My question is about Bluetooth support on iPhone 5. I purchased a Panasonic cordless phone that has a link2cell feature which is supposed to allow use of the cordless phone as a handset in place of the iPhone throughout the house. Allowing the user to leave the iPhone in one location, yet able to pickup calls from multiple handsets throughout the home. This worked well on my iPhone 4, but with my iPhone 5 it no longer connects like it had in the past. I've tried deleting all Bluetooth pairings on all devices and starting over fresh, but no luck. While the device does pair, no calls come through the cordless handset and it stops my iPhone from ringing because it thinks it is still paired. I've checked Panasonic's website to see if there was anyway to update the cordless phone, but found nothing. They also show no support for the iPhone 5.

I was wondering if anyone in your audience has come across this problem and identified a potential solution. I'm also wondering if there is another device out there compatible with the iPhone 5 that has the same functionality of acting like an additional handset receiver for the iPhone.

    Regards,

    Greg in Georgia.

Back in late December I mentioned the Trygger kickstarter project - that is t r y g g e r - and it will likely be closed by the time most hear this - as it is set to close at 8:59 AM ET on the 25th.  But if you are hearing this before - they are at 63 hundred dollars of their 10k funding goal.  And if you want one - now is the time - but sadly it looks like they will have missed their goal.  The Trygger is the camera clip for the iPhone 5 that is a polarizing filter to block out noisy light to help improve photos.  Hopefully they will fund this themselves and offer it up for sale shortly.  If you are interested in this for your iPhone 5 and it is after the fact you can contact them from their kickstarter page and let them know you are interested - search for t r y g g e r at kickstarter dot com.

    Hi Rob,

I want to thank everyone who responded with offers of assistance per the issue of double clicking.  Unfortunately the issue is not double clicking the home button.  The problem is my timing on double tapping icons to rename, move, or delete(on the touch screen).  I have looked in the custom gestures option and cannot find a way to work that in to my problem.

Example: I can double click the home button to bring up the app switcher, but I cannot double-tap an icon to dismiss it. I however can split tap but this does not help in some situations as double tap and hold.

By the way I am blind and use the voice over gestures as well.

    regards,

    Ray

Hi Ray - I will send this back out to anyone that can help Ray per his need to double tap icons to rename - move or delete with voice gestures turned on.  Any help again is greatly appreciate - 206-666-6364 - thats 206-moon-dog

Ok - starting to get lots of questions about the untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.x - ok starting is not accurate - how about I am getting more and more questions about this. anyway - I digress.  Here is the skinny - it looks like an untethered jailbreak is basically ready - The only thing now is they are waiting for iOS 6.1 to be released before they release their untethered jailbreak - which should work to jailbreak all iOS devices running iOS 6.1 - It will likely be a couple to a few weeks after iOS 6.1 is released before this untethered jailbreak is released into the wild.  As always - don't be the first to rush out an do the jailbreak - that is what I am here for - typically when there are issues with a new jailbreak it is when it is a new jailbreak - relax - you waited this long - wait until you see a push from me saying my post is up about how to jailbreak - of course we all need iOS 6.1 to be released first - I thought it was going to be this week - it did not happen - maybe it will be on Monday. If you are someone that likes to rush in on the jailbreak and not head my warning - and there are a couple of you that always do that - you know who you are.  As always - make sure you do a full back up before you try this and make sure to sync over all your photos as well. But again for those that actually need their iOS device to work - wait - wait until you hear it is ok from me to do that jailbreak - just incase it is released sooner than expected.

I saw an interesting post on CNET - It said that nearly half of all iPhone users use the new Youtube app - that means they all went and manually downloaded it - that is pretty amazing.  This also gives hope that most users are also downloading the podcast app - as it is one that is bundled with other Apple apps like find my iPhone - that users are actually prompted to download.  unlike the Youtube app that they had to go search out on their own.  Now all Apple has to do is you know make the Podcast app work like we expect Apple apps to work.

    Hi Rob,

Per Straigh Talk - What is their policy on FaceTime over cellular?  What are the Limitations?

    Regards,

    Michael

Hi Michael - I did some searching and found videos of FaceTime working fine with an iPhone 5 on Straight talk - and found articles about it not working with the iPhone 4.  And then others saying it works fine with the iPhone 4.

Now I will say on the Straight talk website - it mentions next to the iPhone 4 - FaceTime calling - That said anyone on straight talk with an iPhone are you able to use FaceTime over cellular and if so - which iPhone are you doing that from.  206-666-6364 - 206-moon-dog or record and send your feedback to today in iOS at gmail dot com.

Before we go I want to remind you to send in your feedback to the show - 206-666-6364 - that 206-moon-dog - or record your feedback and email it to the show - it can be a question or comment per something someone said on this episode or it can be a question or rant you have about something else.  An App or product review - good or bad - as long as it is iOS related - it is welcomed.  I am always looking for new Artwork to feature that you created on an iOS device - just put some Tii branding on it and send it in.  And of course we are always looking for more music created on an iOS device to play on the show.  This is your show and your feedback is greatly desired.  If you want to know when new episodes go up - look at the Tii app - not just the best way to consume the show - but also a great way to get a push message when a new episode goes live or there is other iOS breaking news.  Just $2.99 in the app store - it helps you enjoy the show more and it helps support the show at the same time - and it makes it really easy to email or call the show with your feedback.  Again just search Tii in the iTunes app store.

And that folks is going to do it for us today.

Apple stock at $450 again why?

Ok - sorry had to through that out there one more time.

    And now we are done.

    Transcript for Episode 254

    -----------------------------------

Well I am back from Vegas and you know that old saying - what happens in vegas stays in vegas - yeah not so much - while attending two three letter conferences - NMX and then CES - I had another 3 letter item follow me back from Vegas - that would be F L U - and finally I am back to talking fine and feeling good.  Wife not so much - and kids - well they are still recovering.  But nice to have my voice back and to get a new episode up.  Hector - be grateful we did not meet up.  I was able to get through the full ilounge section of CES and will be talking about some of the things I saw and or was given in this episode and others in the future.

While at NMX - I did my presentation on How to podcast 100% from an iPad - and I actually podcasted from my iPhone 100% while on stage.  I used the BossJock App.  I started the presentation while people were coming in and asked one of the people in the stage to call into my call in number.  I then while on stage waiting for people to come in - brought in the call into the boss jock app - I then recorded an intro played the recording and recorded myself a little more.  Then in the midsts of the presentation - I recorded someone from the audience - finished the short episode and uploaded the recording and had it publish to my RSS feed I set up.  Again all from the stage while doing my presentation.  Nailed it.  And it really is nice when you do something technical like that on stage with many paths to failure - that it actually works.  Here is the recording I did from stage at NMX.

Ok - the recording was not perfect - I forgot to turn on the mic at to points when I was recording - but still - I was happy it worked out.

Again for those wondering how I did this.  BossJock App on my iPhone was what I used to do the recording and convert to MP3 - plus edit the ID3 tags - and then I just FTP'd it from the boss jock app directly to my libsyn.com quick cast folder - which made it instantly live on my RSS feed.  So if you are looking to podcast from an iOS device - Bossjock app is the best option out there - just like Libsyn Podcast hosting is the best solution for hosting.

Combined they make it so easy to podcast from an iOS device.

If anyone wants my slide deck - which was 81 slides long - email me today in iOS at gmail dot com - and I will send it along.  Yes - I was able to cover 81 slides and still podcast from the stage and answer questions and have plenty of time to spare.

Ok Before we get into some of the news and rumors or worse that are flying around out there about Apple - lets actually get into a couple of press releases from Apple. First up was a press release from Apple with regards to over 40 Billion with a B app store downloads have been achieved and in 2012 alone there were almost 20 Billion app store downloads.  One item from the Press release that I found most interesting - 500 Million active accounts in iTunes - that is 500 Million credit cards Apple has on record - not 500 million individual users - but 500 Million active accounts - many accounts with multiple users - like the 5 users on my account.  There are now over 775,000 Apps for those 500 Million accounts to enjoy and enjoy they did in December to the tune of 2 Billion downloads in December alone.  And this is why developers develop first for iOS.

Oh and that 40 Billion download number - that was the number of unique downloads excluding re-downloads and updates.  Making the number all the more impressive.

One last bit of info from the release - there are now over 300,000 native iPad apps available.  And by Native - that includes those that are universal - like say the Tii App.

The other press release Apple released was about the Wifi plus Cellular models of the iPad Mini and iPad 4 gen now being available in China - well now as in Friday Jan 18th - so if you are hearing this - now available mean now.

In Main land China the iPad Mini and iPad 4th Gen Wifi Plus cellular models are available through apple retail stores, The Apple Online store and select Apple authorized resellers.

I would expect that these will only work with China Unicom and Chine Telecom - as they are the only two carriers currently with an agreement in place in China for the iPhone.  China Mobile while the largest carrier in the world - still has not been able to come to terms with apple for the iPhone - yet.

Note - I am just calling the iPad Mini Wifi + cellular and not + LTE - as it is not yet reported how well the cellular will work in China - If you are in China and get one of the new iPad's with Cellular - be it the mini or 4th gen - please let us know how it is working for you and which carrier you are using it on.

    Hi Rob,

I was just thinking about the blind caller who was struggling with the double click speed on his device.

Has he looked at going into the Accessability options and changing the home buttons double-click speed to "slowest"?

There is also the "assistive touch" option that allows you to operate phone functions with one touch.

You can also set up custom actions.

    Thanks for your show

    Hey Rob,

This is in response to episode 253 of the person who couldn't click the home button fast enough.

It can be changed by going into settings>general>accessibility>Home-click speed. It's almost all the way down the list.

    Hope it helps!

    Alex from Connecticut

    Hi Rob,

A suggestion for your caller (Ray) last week who has a hard time with the double-click of the home button for multi-tasking or closing apps. The zephyr tweak by Grant Paul (aka chpwn) works great as an alternative to the double-click. It allows you to swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar or close apps. It's $4.99 on Cydia, which means it requires a jailbreak.  I highly recommend zephyr!

    Best regards,

    Paul.

    Hey Rob

Please ask the caller if his blue tooth is still on. The dock connection usually changes the sound to the dock but when the iphone leaves the dock it will stay on for a few seconds as it is pairing and will cut off. This problem almost always occurs with car blue tooth systems especially addons.

    Take care Rob

    Hi Rob,

A caller asked what to use to see the kids when out.  I use a foscam ip wireless camera. http://foscam.ca/products/foscam-fi8909w-na-slim-mini-wireless-ip-camera-24.html

    Have a look.

    Regards,

    Don't use me name.

Hi, Rob, this is Ray from Richmond. I heard a caller ask about an app that can monitor by video/audio another room. AirBeam works very well for me. If you have multiple devices, one device can be your receiver, displaying the video/audio and the other(s) are your monitors. Hope this helps your caller.

Take care, Rob. Love the show!

    Rob,

I had some app solutions for listeners of your last show. One is for the listener looking for a nannycam. If you have an iOS device to leave, the app ReconBot allows you to stream the video to a web browser (among other features) which can also be viewed on another iOS device.

Unfortunately, the other app solution isn't appearing in the App Store at this time. It was for the listener who wanted to record security footage on his iPhone screen. It is called Display Recorder by BUGUN. I use it to record my screen for tutorials (like "how to turn on FaceTime", etc) and send others the video.

Both are (were) available in the App Store and do not require jailbreaking.

    Thanks for the show,

    Lou V

    Hi Rob -

In response to the listener asking for baby monitor recommendations - I gave my daughter and son in law the iBaby Monitor and they have been very happy with it.  You mount the camera in the baby's room and can control it from your ipad or phone using a free downloadable app.  It also has an audio option and the ability to move the camera view around the room using your ios device.  One last feature is the ability to snap camera shots.

    Hope this helps,

    Vicki

On the last episode we had a caller asking about controlling a baby monitor from an iPhone - and the last few people offered some suggestions - and while at CES I also found a solution called iSmartAlarm.  And I stopped at the booth and talked to them about their solution.  Note this is a double review - as the recording I made was via my iPhone using the iRig Mic Cast Mic - that plugs into my iPhone and was given to me  by the folks at IK Multimedia to use at the show and beyond.  Thanks to them for the mic - and I will get other recordings of that mic on the show in a more quiet environment - but again lets play the recording I made with the folks at iSmartalarm at CES on the show floor.

    PLAY AUDIO FEEDBACK ismartalarm

Philip Dewitt over at Fortune does his aggregating of many of the estimated of Anal-ists pro and not pros alike - per what they think Apple did on iPhone sales.  The consensus - will there is none - as the estimate for iPhone sales last quarter varies from a low of 43 Mil from Brian White at Topeka - to a high of 63 Mil by Nicolae Mihalache at Traderhood.  As is typical the Pros guess low and the not pros guess high.  Average of the pros is 47.6 Mil sold - Average of the not pros is 52.3 Mil iPhones sold last quarter.  I think the 50 Mil mark will be the bell weather this time around - above that Apple stock takes off - below that - well not much happens as the stock is pretty beat up.  If initial reports from carriers are any indication - the iPhone did pretty good last quarter - with AT&T saying they sold more iPhones last quarter than any quarter before. and over 10 Mil Smartphones last quarter.  More iPhones then ever before means more than 7.6 Mil iPhones sold at AT&T alone last quarter.  Verizon said it sold more than 9.8 mil smartphones last quarter - with a higher share of iPhones than previously - but it is unknown what previously means - a year earlier when the iPhone was 56% of smartphone sales at Verizon or a quarter earlier when it was only 46% share. Either way it seems like Verizon sold at least 4.6 Mil iPhones last quarter and that number could easily be over 5.5 Mil iPhones sold last quarter.  Either way it is a big number of iPhones at Verizon.

And speaking of numbers and Philip dewitt and speaking of analysts - Philip also tracks the Anal-ists guesses on iPads.  Again there is no consensus - actually it is much worse with iPads a low guess of 16.8 Mil iPads from Jim Kelleher at Argus Research - Really someone paid him to say only 16.8 Mil iPads sold last quarter - really?  Wow talk about crapping money down the drain - just saying.  The high estimate was 32 Mil iPads sold by Dennis Hildebrand from the Braeburn group - between 16.8 mil and 32 mil - if I had to pick one - I would say the final number is closer to 32 Mil.  The Pros would say it is right between with 22.8 Mil iPads sold vs 25.5 Mil iPads sold from the non-pros.  I tend to think the average for the non-pros - the 25 mil number is much more likely - especially given the iPad min's stellar launch.  The only thing likely to keep it below 25 Mil would be a lake of iPad supply last quarter.  For both iPhones and iPad's apple will give us more insight on their Jan 23rd conference call.

Now if you watch Apple stock at all you saw earlier this week Apple stock just simply tank - the reason for this was a "report" - and I really have to put quotes around report - from the WSJ - which when you learn what they said makes you go - wow - so no more editors at the WSJ - or maybe they were just recovering from the Flu - but either way - journalism 101 rules were violated and a plenty.  The story just stank of bad reporting.  They talked about iPhone 5 screen orders being drastically cut and blamed a major fall off of demand for the iPhone 5 as the reason for the cut back in orders.  Forbes actually has an article saying the reporting was so bad - the writers must have been punked at the WSJ - because they can't find any other explanation for the article otherwise.  First off there is not evidence out there for a major drop off in demand for the iPhone 5 - except if you count those that already have it - so yes those people are not looking to buy one since they have one.  Changewave actually shows about 50% of those looking to get a smartphone in the US are looking to get an iPhone.  Granted that is down from a peak in the mid 70's 3 months ago - but many 3 months ago have their iPhone 5's now.  The other part of the article when I read it that made no sense is that the initial orders for this quarter were expected to come in at 65 Mil screens for Q1.  That means if they are expecting 65 Mil screens from suppliers in Q1 - they are expecting to ship 65 Mil iPhone 5's in Q2 of this year - Ummmmm no.  Even the craziest of the analysts we mentioned before only had 63 Mil iPhones sold last quarter and that was both the big quarter and includes iPhone 4 and 4S.  So even last quarter best case what 40 mil iPhone 5's maybe 45 Mil.  But no way 65 Mil last quarter and Q2 numbers should be down a bunch from last quarter.  So no matter how you look at it - 65 Mil iPhone screens ordered for this quarter does not make sense - and any reduction in that number is just reality catching up to orders - but not demand rolling off the cliff.  And that is why earlier this week - if you were liquid it was a good time to buy some Apple stock. More than likely what happened is what Fortune suggested - Someone just punk'd the WSJ - either way it is clear the adults are no longer in charge at the journal.  Just sayin.

And speaking of adults not in charge - comes the other made up - retracted - lets change the story story about Cheaper iPhones.  Seems first the un-named sources said there was a cheaper iPhone coming - because you know the other sources in the know are saying Apple is going to build bigger and I guess more expensive multicolor iPhones.  Well in this case the un-names sources again not to be confused with sources in the know - claim a $99 iPhone is coming for BRIC nations.  Then there is a report from Reuters with a quote from Phil Shiller going unt- uh - no way - no how.  Then there is a retraction from Reuters - which says it needed to update its store of Phil saying no way - because their original source changed significant parts of their story.  Now mind you Phils - killing of the cheap iPhone changed to him saying they will not chase market share blindly - which then lead the adults in the room - to say - see - that is not a denial - so it is an admission - except - Phil's comments were not in response to the un-named source but from an interview done prior to un-named source - just simply updated after the rumor broke.  So no the changing of the words in no way was an admission of a $99 iPhone.  Of course none of that could stop the adults from the WSJ from running their Cheap iPhone could launch by the end of the year story.  Face meet palm - palm meet face.

One rumor that keeps getting re-rumored and repeated - is the iPad mini 2nd gen and iPad maxi 5th gen rumor where they will launch in Mach rumor - ummm no - and that rumor also includes the iPad mini being retina display - ummm no.  I could get into this in more detail - but why waste all our time - per these rumors - ummm - No and no.  enough said.

The iPhone 5 has finally and officially made its way to Straight talk.  You can now purchase an iPhone 5 from Walmart for use on Straight talk - mind you it is a full price iPhone 5 - no subsidy - so it is $649 for the 16 GB version.  But hey if you have a walmart card you can finance it at $25 a month - and I can hit you in the head if you do if ever our two paths should meet.  Now the real reason for getting on Straight talk is the $45 a month unlimited plan - with unlimited in quotes - we will get to that in a minute.  Straight talk actually offers two plans quote

    • $45 – No Contract Monthly Plan with Unlimited Nationwide Talk, Text, and Data.
    • $60 – No Contract Monthly Plan with Unlimited Nationwide Talk, Text, and Data PLUS Unlimited International Calling to more than 1,000 destinations in Mexico, Canada, India, and in other countries.

    unquote.

Ok - now lets get to the down side of all this.  First - it looks like it is just the 16 GB iPhone 5 right now - or the 8 GB iPhone 4 for $449 are available.  Second that unlimited they talked about - well surely there is some clear text about what unlimited means and if there is not - well then it means unlimited like with Sprint - no cap and no throttling - right - right - ummm - no wrong - as in wrong about them clearly labeling the limits and wrong about it being truly unlimited.  Seems Straight talk is talking their Terms of service writing class the same place Instagram did. PC Mag has an article titled quote how straight talk's TOS makes most iPhone users criminals unquote - yeah not a good title for those thinking Straight talk was going to offer this great service.  Seems that there is a throttle point - and it is 2GB of data - and then you get the messages.  Worse they can just kick you off the network if they want.  And per their terms you really should not be doing much that is not through their own portal.  So no app downloads and not gaming and no surfing if not through their portal.  And no Youtube.  At least per their terms of service.

So essentially the reason the straight talk plan is just $45 a month for unlimited everything is that they really want to limit what unlimited means.  Or as their TOS actually says

Quote Straight Talk Unlimited Talk, Text and Mobile Web Access Plans may ONLY be used with a Straight Talk handset for the following purposes: (i) Person to Person Voice Calls (ii) Text and Picture Messaging (iii) Internet browsing through the Straight Talk Mobile Web Service and (iv) Authorized Content Downloads from the Straight Talk Mobile Web Store.

Yup - getting your email seems to violate their TOS and they can boot you if they want.  Will they - probably not - but at this point I definitely can not recommend them as a service provider for your iPhone.  Go to Sprint or Virgin Mobile - but stay far away from Straight talk until they get their TOS in order.

Speaking of Sprint - Seems the latest rumor there with regards to iOS devices is that they will offer up their total equipment protection of the iPhone starting on Jan 25th - and at $11 a month and a $150 deductible - it makes me go - huh????  Why would anyone sign up for this.  That is $264 in two years plus the deductible - spend $94 bucks go to square trade dot com slash tii and get a much much better warranty with a much lower deductible.  Not sure why anyone would spend well over 2x the price on their warranty to have a deductible that is 3 times the size - bad bad choice - stay away from this offering from Sprint if it does turn out to be true.

Speaking of US carriers - one that finally seems to be coming around and smelling the coffee is AT&T - and this is with regards to FaceTime support - previously AT&T has said only LTE devices would be able to support FaceTime - and now it looks like they are saying they will support FaceTime over cellular at no charge to any customer on a tiered data plan.  Ok - so they are not fully over yet to the light side - as it means all of us with unlimited AT&T plans are left to jailbreak if we want to run FaceTime - thanks AT&T for helping keep the incentive in place for jailbreaking and mis-using your network or actually I guess being able to use your network as others are able to.

ok - not to be so US centric - this next one is for our listeners in Saudi Arabia - seems STC launched an iPad mini for free offer.  All you have to do to get the free iPad mini is sign up for one of the qualifying data plans.  Which data plans and how much that is - well check with STC on that.

Back to Asia we go and specifically Main land China and Cnet is reporting that Tim Cook has said Apple is talking with China Mobile about getting the iPhone - and really at this point can anyone believe they are doing anything other than talking.  T-mobile in the US is getting the iPhone for criminey sakes.  Guess it comes down to China mobile and Apple both laying it out on the table so to speak and trying to show the other guy why theirs is bigger and better.  We are talking about agreements of course - what did you think I was speaking of?

Thanks to Chris in London for this next one.  Which keeps us on the China theme and in this case it is about Apple supposedly offering up 12 easy payments to Chinese customers - i.e. financing for their devices.  Sounds like Apple is deciding the best way to compete with budget phones is not to make a budget phone - but to rather find creative ways to help those in China afford their phone.

A few different funny stories about the iPhone and or competitors since the last episode - one was about the guy who's iPhone he left in a cab and then was absconded by someone clearly not looking to give it back - so said original owner - finds out this guy is using it to visit a dating site - decides to create a fake account on the site to lure the new owner of his iPhone into a honey trap and wouldn't you know it worked - said illegal owner of iPhone shows up with wine and a hat on - at the door to what he thought was an easy date - only to find the guy whose iPhone he absconded - the illegal iPhone owner handed over the iPhone to the rightful owner.

The next story is probably one I had more people send in than any other story the past couple of months.  Seems there was a break in at a research lab and all that was taken from the lab were iPads - no other electronics or equipment was taken just the iPads.  What makes this story so funny is the lab in question belonged to Microsoft.  Microsoft reported that 2 iPad 2's and 2 iPad 3's and an iPad 4 were all stollen - not stollen - anything made by microsoft - Ouch.   Yes that instantly paints in your minds eyes this burglar going Yes an iPad - and another - nope don't want that surface - nope don't want that Zune - nope don't want that kin - yup will take that iPad and that other one - nope don't want that windows 8 convertible - yup on that iPad 4 - ok - I am out of here.  From the PR point of view MS would have been better off just swallowing the loss of the 5 iPad's - just saying.

And the final story is about a poor guy in Nevada - seems there is a strange little bug in the GPS software on Sprints network - that for some reason every so often in Las Vegas if you run find my iPhone - it points to this poor guys house.  Now it is not limited to find my iPhone - as it effected some police GPS systems as well.  But still this guy has had multiple people show up at his door saying or likely yelling that they know their iOS device is in his house and to give it up.  So this goes to show if you iOS device goes missing - it is best when you locate the device - to call the police and have them there as back up and not knock on the door - one you could be accusing the wrong person and two well - you never really want to knock on the door of someones house that really did steal your iOS device with out police back up.

Ok - actually one more funny story - and this is about a strange bug on the Android slash google now side - where if you ask a question the right way Google Now comes back with a response that ends with quote he now praises the iPad unquote.  So if your query end the sentence with quote end with unquote or quote enraged with unquote or quote filled with unquote - the response back will end with quote he now praises the iPad unquote.

One of the things I tested out in Vegas both at NMX and CES was a vCard and QR code - The company Vizibility sent me a NFC wallet card and stickers for QR codes.  What you then do is set up a web page with them and when you are scanned people are sent to your page where there are all sorts of links and info about you that you set up.  Which is nice for me where I have multiple things I am promoting - Libsyn - Today in iOS - Podcast411 - Tricks of the Podcasting Masters and more.  The VCard which I thought would get scanned more - well only got scanned by another NFC device a total of 2 times the entire time I was in vegas - that includes walking around CES - Say what you will about NFC - but until Apple adds it to the iPhone - it is just a fringe tech at best.  My stickers - the ones with the QR codes - those were scanned 19 times - so 19 times someone took the time to hover their smartphones camera over the QR code and get it registered - which takes some doing - vs 2 times someone passed by and scanned my NFC vcard - and again - this was at NMX and CES - two of the most tech oriented audiences in the world.

Now I would like to say - the service Vizibility has was really nice.  And when Apple Adds NFC capabilities - or if they do - this service will do very well - and their service does work with iOS 6's passbook.  Go to Vizibility.com for more info on this or look for the link in the show notes.  Thanks folks for the NFC VCard - and I will report back in the future if I get more scans on the NFC Card - which I keep in the case of my iPhone - so it is right there with me all the time.

Hi Rob - I ran across this Kickstarter project called Safe Wallet Case for iPhone 5. I haven't ever used a case on any of my iPhones, but this one looks nice. Thought maybe some other listeners of your show might like it.

    Regards,

    Darrin

Hi Darrin - thanks for the heads up on the Safe Wallet case - three words - this is for the iPhone 5 as you mentioned.  It has a goal of $19,0000 and around $15,000 already raised with a funding date of Feb 7th at 11:16 PM ET - which means this one is pretty much a done deal.

What this is an iPhone 5 case that has a place for some credit cards, money and even a key or two in the back of the case - this way your don't have to carry a wallet and an iPhone - just an iPhone 5 with a case that is your wallet.

I actually saw a few of these type of cases for the iPhone 4 and 4s at CES.  Right now pledges for this start at $39 and well also end at $39.  While there are 5 different pledge offerings - the only difference is color - with choices of Silver, White, Blue, Red and Black.

Again if you are interested in this search for Safe Wallet Case - three words at Kickstarter dot com or in the show notes for episode 254 over at today in iOS dot com.

Thanks to Levi for this next one.  Which is the heads up on something that will totally void any warranty for an iPhone 5.  It is a translucent iPhone 5 shell.  That's right you replace the Black or white opaque shell with this translucent shell.  This is not a case - but a replacement for the actual shell of the iPhone 5.  It is actually really cool looking.  No word on how easy it is to make the change.  Cost of the mod kit is $39.90 - and again it is very cool looking from a total nerds perspective - FYI - Guys while it is true if you are single and you have an iPhone it helps you get dates - this case would actually negate any of those gains and put you in the whole and then some.  Only buy this if your are secure in your current relationship or a female.  Look for the link in the show notes titled iPhone 5 mod translucent kit.

I talked with long time friend Cali Lewis while in Vegas (gratuitous name drop) and said to how sad I was she jumped to Android - her main reasoning for the jump was the integration with Google Apps. There is a nice article by Rene Ritchie at iMore - (also friend and libsyn podcaster - more gratuitous name dropping) Rene's article talks about the iPhone once again being the best google phone on the planet. Thanks to those that sent this link - which I forwarded to Cali. Maybe we can get her back to the iPhone some day.

Thanks to Tash for this next one - which is a post titled - 5 Apps - best camera apps for blind and visually impaired iPhone users and this is from TUAW. The first app they mention is a really important one - LookTel MoneyReader. This US$9.99 app uses object-recognition technology and the iPhone's bright LED flash to recognize currency almost instantaneously, even in low light or in a moving car. What many people do not realize is in the US our money is all the same size - so blind people have no way to tell if they are giving or getting a $20 bill a $1 bill or a $100 bill. I know some that are blind will have notchs placed on the bills so they know what they are giving - but it does not help with change. This app takes care of that for them letting them know exactly what size denomination the bill is they are giving or getting - and not just relying on the honesty of strangers. Again that app is LookTel MoneyReader it is $9.99 and if you know someone that is blind - think about gifting it to them.

I had a few people email in about this app in the past when it was paid and now it is free - so figured I would mention it again - The app is Localscope - and again it is now free in the App store - but they do have an in app purchase - so not sure if it is just a neutered app when free - or actually useful - either way it is free to try it out. And again - the old paid for version got good reviews from listeners in the past. Localscope - one word in the iTunes app store.

    Hi

I have an ipad mini and iPhone 5 both updated to iOS 6.02.

On the mini I saw no issues but on the iPhone 5 I had to downgrade to

6.01 using DFU and restore as there was battery issues.

On one day on 6.02 it used 40% battery in 3 hours with no device usage ie

me directly using the device. On another day I was in airplane mode and had

wifi only on and it went through 30% battery in 2 hours, again with no

    usage.

Since downgrading performance is normal with approximately 8 hours before

it hits 20%, with normal usage by me.

I have since invested in 2 battery cases which whilst I believe they are

not MFI approved they work fine and enable extended usage.

    Kind regards

    Hi Rob,

Happy New year I was listening to your last podcast

And I too have the same problem with the beats Bluetooth

And I can't seem to get it fixed, I  toggle the Bluetooth on & off but it is not the best way I don't know if it is a beats problem or iPhone problem. I have an iPhone 5 iOS 6.0.2

Hi Rob i was wonder when a jailbreak was going to come out for ios 6

    Regards,

    ryan

    Hi Ryan,

Latest word is an untethered Jailbreak for iOS 6.x is done - but not released - and they will not release it until Apple releases iOS 6.1 - as they don't want Apple to fix the exploit right away.

So My guess at this point would be within a month of when iOS 6.1 is released we should see a jailbreak.

    Rob W

Remember hacker and jail breaker Pod2G - the hacker that helped bring about the iOS 5.x jailbreak.  Well seems he has stepped away from Jailbreaking so that he could do some developing of something he could sell and you know make some money on.  To that end he started a company called 2G lab - and released a turn table / dj mixing app called PodDJ - It is currently priced at $7.99 through the end of the month - then it goes up to $9.99.  He also says on his site he is looking for clients to do development work for.

Thanks to michael and others for this next one - which was by its title not what I had hoped. The title is Student add prank street names to Apple Maps. And well I thought yeah college students - figuring a group at one college did a planned effort of using the report feature in Apple Maps on iOS 6 to change a name of a street - like say Students from Duke teaming up and getting the main street down the middle of North Carolina's campus changed to Blue Devil blvd or something like that - but sadly nope nothing like that at all - what happened here was some Afghan university student via open street map put in some silly names for streets that had their names in dispute and then those names were picked up by Apple in iOS 6 app map.  So really they did not like the title of the article add Street names to Apples map app - they added to them to Open Street Map - and the entries were not properly vetted before being imported by apple into their data base.  SAD TROMBONE - I do had wanted this to be a story of some determined and meddlesome teenagers gaming Apple maps in a funny way - oh well  - maybe some time in the future.

One thing at CES I wanted to see - but it had too big a line around it at the Griffen booth was Crayola's light marker for iPad.  What is special about this is you don't actually have to touch the screen on the iPad to draw on the iPad.  It seems it uses the front facing camera to detect where the Crayola marker is and what you are doing with said marker.  It looks like it is $29.99 for the marker - And well yes you can buy a lot of regular markers and paper for that amount of money - but it is harder to email those drawings.

At CES Lego announced that the upcoming Mindstorm Robotic kits will have support for iOS devices. Lego by the way has their own official podcast - which yes is hosted with Libsyn - gratuitous name drop. Nice to see Lego now allowing iOS Devices to control the Mindstorm Robotic Kits.

THanks to Tash for this next one - which is a Bluetooth Fork which works with an iPhone app to let you know when you eat to much - I have to admit - I did not see this one when at CES - but I only made it through the iLounge section.  I guess what the Bluetooth forks does is recognize when you are eating to fast and then vibrates.  Really what I think most people really need is not a fork that sees if your are eating to fast - but rather the wrong stuff - and rather than vibrate - that sucker needs to zap our butts.  Eating a piece of cheese cake - Zap.  Eating Carrots - well that is ok.

    hi rob,

i am a new listener, and so far i love it. i went back and listened to an old episode, but i don't remember which one, but i do remember someone asking a question about an app for group messages. well, i do have a solution. in ios 6, you can type multiple names in the "to:" field, and when one person responds, everyone else will see it. i hope this helps, and keepup the good work.

Ray should check out the Assistive Touch features in the Accessibility menu of IOS devices. These include workarounds for getures that may be difficult to use, including some option to create customized gestures. I use Voiceover and Zoom only, so I'm not too familiar with the Assistive Touch menu, but there are many text and video tutorials online.

Rob, love the show. If you have time for another Accessibility-related question for your listeners, here are a couple more:

Touch Typing while Zoom is enabled works with the iPhone but not the iPads. anyone know why or how to work around this?

Editing text with Voiceover is one of the few things that is almost impossible, does anyone have any apps or links that help?

Voiceover voices are good, but the ones on the iMac are better. any way to get them onto the mobile devices?

    Hi Rob,

If I have an iPad 3 (the new iPad) which is on Verizon for on-demand cellular service. Can I use the same Verizon account on the iPad mini if I buy one?

    Hi_Rob,

I have given up carrying a heavy DSLR and now do all my photography with my iPhone 4. I started a blog to document my journey to photography minimalism. Check it out at:

    dslrtoiphone.wordpress.com.

The attached artwork started with a screenshot, processed with the sketch filter on Iris then added the "Tii" with Adobe Idea, all on my iPhone 4.

    Transcript for Episode 253

    ------------------------------------

That clip is from the Onion and speaking of cracked screens.

Thanks goes out to listener Eric Castillo at iCare iPhone Repair - actually a big thanks - a huge thanks - no a humungous thanks goes out to Eric - As you may know my 6 year old son recently dropped my iPhone 4S and shattered the screen and Eric was kind enough to send me a replacement screen. And After a touch and go 1 hour and 54 minute surgery on my iPhone 4S - I am happy to report that when I powered my iPhone 4S back on - it came to life and is working properly.  I will say that if you ever plan on doing your own iPhone repairs - go to Radio shack and get the Mobile Phone Tool Kit.  The plastic pry tools are really needed. That said - I have worked on electronics for over 30 years - and the iPhone 4S is one tricky disassembly and re-assembly - definitely need to watch a video while taking it apart and putting back together. Again Eric Castillo at iCare iPhone Repair - Thanks so much for the new Front panel - and my 6 year old son says thanks too. Folks you can follow eric on Facebook at icareiphonerepair and hit him up if you need some repair work done.

Hey and speaking of Sons and iPhones One item that got a bit of press this holiday season was about a mommyblogger that put up a list of 18 terms and conditions for her 13 year old son to agree to and follow - if he wanted to get and keep an iPhone.

And the list is full of some common sense items such as No Porn or keep your eyes up see the world happening around you.  but One of them is one I recommend to my brother and sister for their kids iOS devices and one I think is really important for any parent - and that is number 2 on her list - I will always know the password.

and I would take that even one step further when it comes to email - Only the parent should know the password.  What I did with my sisters kids new iPad Mini's - is I helped her set up email address for each device - you kind of need the emails for each if you want to use iMessage.  but they also wanted to use email.  So what we did was to set up Gmail accounts for each kid - and then another new email account for my Sister - as the parent account - then in Gmail we set it up to forward a copy of every inbound email to my Sisters Parent account.  You can also set up the iOS device to send a BCC copy of every email mailed out.  This way you then get a copy of every email coming in and out of that iOS device as the parent.  We also turned on restrictions after all was set up - and turned off the ability to change / delete / add email accounts.  And only my sister the parent knows the Restrictions password.  That is how you secure an iOS device for email use.

I would say what was missing in this list - was as the parent - only You should know the passcode to restrictions and only You as the parent will know the password to the email.

So yes - that 18 point agreement was fine - but I think there needs to be even more control of your kids iOS devices - and the younger they are the more it is needed.

Some would tell you the new iPhone Do not disturb commercial has horrible timing for it release given the glitch many experienced with iOS 6 and Do not Disturb not working correctly On new Years day morning - seems Apple or Siri or some celestial force decided many iOS 6 users just partied to hard On New Years Eve and decided not to turn off Do not disturb as scheduled. Scott Forstall has reportedly already turned down the request to apologize for that. Now as embarrassing as that glitch is/was - it could have been worse - it could have let calls and texts in at 6:00 AM. Now back to the commercial - I don't think the timing is the worst part here - I think it is the whole concept of the commercial - which shows the Williams Sisters - Venus and Serena - playing ping pong with the person dreaming - from the person who is dreaming perspective. Really - You have the Williams sisters in a dream and you are playing Ping Pong with them - Yeah - not the dream most men could relate to -If you know what I mean…. Badminton Now that I could understand - but Ping Pong - What kind of men do they think we are. Just sayin.

Seems there were multiple posts out there about some people that updated to iOS 6.0.2 on their iPhone 5 and iPad Mini seeing some issues with battery life.  Interestingly l did not hear of any of those issues - and it seems not to be a widespread issue - but if you have an iPhone 5 or iPad mini and you did upgrade to iOS 6.0.2 - have you had any noticeable issues with degraded battery life?

206-666-6364 - 206-moon-dog - or shot us an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com.

    Rob:

I don't know if this has been mentioned in any podcast, but I've

discovered a hidden gem in mapping.

The Mapquest App will locate your contacts, and accurately plot

    directions with voice turn-by-turn navigation.

This fixes the missing feature such as a little thing called accuracy

in the notorious Apple map app, and the Google inability to locate

    contacts.

I will use this feature as my default mapping and report problems.

The only issue is that Siri seems to only know about Apple's own Map App.

    -Barry

    Hello Rob,

You mentioned in your last episode that it is once again possible to gift an app from within the App Store on an iDevice. Where exactly do you find that option? It would make sense to me if it was an option once you search for an app or pick an app, but I cannot find this.  I also looked under “Share”, but all I see there is email, Facebook, Twitter etc.

Thanks for any light you might be able to shed on this.

    REGARDS

    Sieghard

    Hi Sieghard,

In the App store App - when you find an app you want to gift.

Tap on the Box with the arrow coming out in the upper right.

Then you will get a pop over with multiple options.

One of the options is Gift

    HOPE THAT helps.

    Hi Rob

My wife & I are on Verizon Wireless & in January we're going to upgrade her to an iPhone 5, she currently has a BB Storm. I couldn't be more excited for her! My question though, is if we share an Apple ID, so we can share some apps, will she have to have all the apps that I have & vice versa? I'm sure we will want some of my apps on her new phone but not all.

Regards,Shannon H in Fountain Hills, AZ

    Hi Shannon,

Good question - Answer is NO.

You can each pick and choose which apps you want.

I would recommend turning off the option where it auto downloads on the device any apps purchased for that account.

Other wise whenever she downloads a new app - it will auto download to your device as well and vice versa.

Which could be an issue if you download one of the hot chick type apps or vice versa.

Thanks to Stephen for the heads up on this iOS 6 Panorama Photo tip - and that is by tapping in the Panorama window where the Arrow is - when you first start the pic - it will reverse the arrow and now you can go from right to left - rather than left to right as it is set by default. Thanks Stephen. Stephen is also the developer of IWGuide all one word - which is a free app that gives you a listing of what shows and movies are available now from Netflix for instant streaming. And how long they will be available. Again search for IWGuide one word in iTunes.

Apple just announced that their Quarterly conference call to go over last Quarters sales will be on Wednesday Jan 23rd.  So what are they going to be talking about.  Well sales and lots of them if the following stories are any indication.  Over at CNET they had one such story titled iPhone snag its highest US market share ever.  This was based on looking at a 12 week window ending on November 25th - the research firm Kantar WorldPanel ComTech stated that Apple quote reached a major milestone in the US by passing the 50% share mark for the first time. unquote.  Again this was for the US.  In Europe - Android phones combined for 61% share vs the iPhones 25.3% share during that 12 week window.  Please note all these numbers are based on survey's so grain of salt take with them should we.

Another thing Apple should be talking about on the quarterly conf call is the iPad mini and how it did - and if demand in the China is any indication it did great.  As the iPad is seeing stock outs in China - and in the US is still listed at 1 week for delivery for all versions and colors.  In China it is also being reported that the iPhone 5 is the most popular high end handset once again.

Of course if one does not believe anal-ists and survey's one could always look to social media to figure out how iOS devices are doing - and that is what some people with too much time on their hands did - they search for the tweets with the phrase "First tweet from…" and then looked to see what came in the dot dot dot place.  And for a 24 hour period starting on Christmas even the winner was Apple iPad.   There were 1795 tweets found with iPad finishing that tweet.  vs 250 tweets for Kindle vs 100 tweets for Google Nexus vs just 36 tweets for MS surface.  That is an over 4.6 to 1 ratio of iPad's vs Kindles, Nexus and Surfaces.

So lets say you don't want to believe anal-ists, or inventory checks or survey's or tweets - well then you could always just look at hard data like Ad impressions delivered by a big Ad network - and in this case we are talking about the Chitika folks once again.  Chitika looked at 10's of millions of ad requests from Dec 8th to the 14th - and what they found for tablets was similar to past findings - iPad kicked butt and took names.  like the kindle fire which had 4.88 impressions for each 100 for an iPad.  The Galaxy Tabs were 3.04 per 100.  the nexus at a paltry 1.22 per 100.  They also looked at the Asus transformer, Nook, Playbook, Acer konia, plus another 5 and a catch all for unidentified Android tablet - and the overall findings were there was a total of 14.75 Ad impressions for all the non-ipad tablets for each 100 for iPad tablets.  Or put another way over 87% of tablet traffic comes from an iPad. Now if it is true that Android tablets are making up over 40% of tablet sales but barely able to make it above 12% of traffic - it really makes you wonder what people are doing with said devices.  I mean I understand why traffic is so poor on Android smartphones - people just got those devices for the most part because they just wanted a phone.  But with a tablet - that logic does not fit.  So either sales are not what Anal-ists and surveys say for Android devices - or they just really suck something bad and people just don't want to use them.  Just sayin.

Any way Jan 23rd will be here soon and it will be interesting to hear what apple has to say about last quarter sales for iOS devices.

A quick update - Chitika - updated their numbers for Tablets - or more specifically they extended the time period they looked at - to now cover Dec 1st thru Dec 27th. What they found was pre dec 25th - the iPad had an 86% share of traffic vs a 78.9% of share of traffic from Dec 25th to the 27th. The big winner was the Kindle Fire going up to 7.5% from about 4.5% before Christmas. Still at 78.9% the iPad is the clear dominate force in Tablet usage - it will be interesting to see where those numbers are two months from now - will people still be using their Android tablets or will they be in a draw somewhere collecting dust?

Ok and now to look into the future a bit for Apple products we first need to step back to mid 2012 and the rumor / speculation / hope that in September of 2012 Apple would announce a bluetooth connected iPod nano to also use as a wrist watch.  IE a Pebble competitor officially from Appel - and well you know if you listen to this show - I was hoping / speculating that would be announced last fall - and well - not so much.  But now that rumor is for some reason back running the circuit.  This time with the added twist it is something Apple is working with Intel on.  Huh???   Ok Yes - I still think Apple will eventually release a bluetooth watch that works with your iPhone - but working with Intel - Huh?? I just don't follow that part of the rumor - Why.  Per the specifics of the rumor as translated to english - quote Supply chain, said Intel is designed for Apple Bluetooth smart watches, this product is RiTdisplay 1.5-inch OLED screen, other aspects of the supply chain, with a rhenium ocean of OGS encore indium tin oxide transparent conductive (ITO) glass. unquote  Again Huh?  Why would Apple look to Intel to design anything for them.  I think Apple already has the hardware design side pretty well covered.  But take out the intel part and any of those specs - and yeah - I think we will see an iWatch or what ever it will be called in 2013 - of course please note I thought we would see it in 2012 as well.

In addition to the iWatch rumor - there is of course the  lets predict it for each year that starts with a 2 rumor for an Apple TV or iTV or Big Screen TV by Apple rumor.  Will we see that in 2013 - I would say the likelihood is greater than 50% but less than 90% - yeah how is that for taking a stand.  How about a 7th gen iPhone or if you prefer an iPhone 5S - yup 100% we will see that in 2013 - along with a new iPad maxi and a new iPad Mini.  Most likely the iPad maxi will be the fist item upgraded and it will take on the look and design or the iPad mini - with the dual speakers and flatter design.  Do I think the iPad mini will be retina - well that would be the easy call - since most think a new iPad mini is coming with Retina - I however am not one and think it will be 2014 before we see an iPad mini with retina display.  One rumor is Apple will or show acquire Waze - to help on the mapping side to help with real time traffic data.  Over at Cnet they mention that Apple likes to cast a shadow over CES and get the people there talking about apple - which they have done very well for the past few years.  And this year it just does not seem likely it would be a device announcement - which leaves us with software or acquisition announcements as All the other items for 2013 - just don't seem to match up well with CES timing wise to be announced in the next few days.  Either way - Apple likes to overshadow CES and it will be interesting to see if Apple can do it again this year.  Especially since I will be there.

Now one rumor slash item that just popped up is reports about iPHone 6's and iOS 7 showing up in developers log reports.  This could be the case Apple is testing out the next iPhone already - or the next version of iOS 7 - but it seems a little early for those reports.  It could just as likely be someone spoofing their device info just to create the bogus reports. Is iOS 7 coming Yes - is the next iPhone coming yes - are these latest reports of them showing up in logs legit - probably not.

And an update - Cnet is also now reporting their earlier reporting got ahead of itself as now they say the infamous a source familiar with Apple's thinking - huh - wait a second a source familiar with Apple's thinking - and they are unnamed. Ok what everrrr -  Anyway Cnet's source says nope - Waze is not getting acquired by Apple - but Techcrunch's source say is too - oh wait is not.  Seems Tech crunch then backed off its story.  So now it seems Apple is neither acquiring Waze nor Tom Tom.  Which per the later - is probably a good thing.

Staying on the rumor front the other crazy rumor is that there will be multiple iPhone colors available mid year.  And some are expanding that rumor to say also multiple sizes.  I only mention this because well I want to be able to come back later and say - see - I told you that was a crazy rumor with no chance of happening - which is what I am saying - just sayin.

And speaking of legit or not - this next one I thought was not legit when I first saw it.  IT is about the app Cycloramic - this is a $0.99 app just for the iPhone 5. Actually just for a naked iPhone 5 - what this app does is it takes a panoramic video by placing the iPhone 5 on its bottom edge standing up - it then uses the vibrator to cause the iPhone 5 to revolve in a circle while it records the video.  It just records the video - not audio.  It is a cute parlor trick - hey look at what my smartphone can do type of thing - that from comments requires a very smooth and level surface for this to work.  Again the App is called Cycloramic

Do you watch CBS TV shows - do you have an iPad - do you often wish you had an app that greatly enhanced your CBS TV viewing experience - well guess what - your wish has been granted with the release of the new and free CBS Connect iPad App which works as your second screen allowing for social interaction with other watchers of said CBS TV shows. Starting with NCIS LA, on Jan 8th then Hawaii 5-0 on Jan 14th and CSI on Jan 16th - you will be able to use the app to quote more deeply engage with each and every new episode unquote.

Thanks for all those that sent in this next one - which is a post with the steps to take to change your carrier listed on your iPhone to whatever you want.  Like mine says Libsyn -  or some times Tii.  There are 8 steps and I will not go over them here - other than to say if this is something you want to do - look for the link titled How to change your iPhone carrier logo without jailbreaking - in the show notes for episode 253 over at today in iOS dot com.  Now if you are jailbroken like me - then it is even easier - just download the cydia app - FakeCarrier - all one word - it is free - and then you can quickly and easily change the carrier to what ever you want - this comes in handy when taking screen shots for tutorials - and wanting to add in some additional branding.  But either way jailbroken or not - you can change your carrier logo.

Interesting stats from Google today- On Android - Gingerbread is finally less than half of all installed devices.  now sitting at 47.6% of Android devices that is based on data collected for a 14 day period ending Jan 3rd.  Jelly Bean 4.1 is now up to 9.0% and 4.2 is at 1.2% adoption.  To put that in perspective - Gingerbread would be equivalent to iOS 3.x and Jelly bean iOS 6.  Jelly bean 4.1 was released in July - and 4.2 was released right about when iOS 6 was released.  Right now over 60% of iOS devices are running iOS 6.x and barely 10% are running Jellybean. And still over 47% are stuck multiple major versions back.  This is the issue with Android.  It is a major cluster frack.  Just sayin.

Hi Rob – with the Apple maps, I like to leave the map set to my route to work and I open every day before leaving to see the traffic situation. The map settings and layout is saved when the maps app is closed and released from memory.  So, whenever I open it, I see the same view.  It works great and is very accurate. I tested this on the new Google maps and it doesn't work as well. If you set the map up to show a certain area and turn on traffic, once the app is closed and released from memory, when reopened, the map shows the current location and all settings are back to default.

Google maps isn't perfect. I admit I'm a big Apple fan (like you) and want to see them win this battle.

    Regards,

    Darrin

    Hi Rob,

Love the podcast, I oversee the IT department for my local school board and the podcast is great for keeping me up to date on all things iOS and its been a lifesaver.

My question for the listeners is what would be the best piece of hardware on the market to use as a baby monitor to pair with iOS devices? My brothers wife is pregnant and I'd like to get them something where they can view the monitor via their iPhone/iPad from within the house and when they are out of the house.

Love the show and keep up all the good work.

    Andy

    Hi Rob,

I’m a stroke victim and now blind and thus use voice over on a IPhone 4S.  My issue is due to my stroke, I can not double click quick enough to dismiss apps, rename, or other double click actions. Suggestions?

Sidenote; I use split tap for much functions, but can not do app close or the other features of double clicking.

    Thanks

    Ray

    Hi Rob

Im looking to travel to Asia next year, when researching destinations i noticed how useless the maps are for me. Country/Place names are written in the local language, not English. How would i report this error Apple?

    Regards,

    Roger

    Norway

    Hi Roger,

I see that issue as well for names - there is an option that is supposed to force it to the language setting you select for your iPhone - and that does not appear to be working.

I would guess you can report this via the report a issue option in maps for iOS 6 and select "my problem ins't listed" and do that - maybe if enough people complain - they will do something.

We talk about Kickstarter Projects pretty much close to every episode for over a year now.  And there is a very interesting article over at PC Mag dot com - titled - Most Kickstarter Projects fail to deliver on time.  And by Most they mean 84 % that missed their target delivery dates.  CNN Money looked at 50 different projects with due dates of Nov 2012 or earlier and found only 8 shipped on time or early.  One we mentioned here was CloudFTP.  Some that were slightly late were Brydge, Elevation Dock and MetaWatch Strata.  And some that are pretty late - Geode - which well we talked that one to death already and those they put in the where the Frack is my product category include - The Pebble Watch, Gtar, and Galileo.

Now that all said - John forwarded me an email today he received from Pebble which said it is almost time - which they talk about a Press even on Wed the 9th at 9:00 AM PT at room S228 - If I am near there I will try and stop by.

And lets get into a new Kickstarter project - this next one was brought to our attention From Zed Alpha.  It is the Wyncase - spelled - W Y N C A S E - one word.  And this one sadly does not look like it will reach its goal - it has only until Jan 12th at 10:00 PM ET - and has only raised a total of $20k towards a goal of $80k.  What it is is another Case for the iPhone that has gaming controls built in. But it is just $30 - if you are looking for a case slash game controller for your iPhone 4 or 4S or 5 or iPod touch 4th or 5th gen - then do a search for Wyncase - w y n c a s e  over at kickstarter dot com.

Thanks to Fabio for this next one - which a start up project not on kickstarter but on Christie Street dot com - not sure we have covered anything on this site before.  Anyway - the project we are talking about is called the Doorbot - one word.  It is a wifi enabled smart doorbell - because you know all the times you pushed the simple little doorbell button - the person on the other side was probably saying I wish I could see and talk to whoever is ringing my door bell right here on my iOS device.  This project has raised a total of $154 thousand dollars - which would be really impressive if not for the fact they have a goal of $250,000 dollars and just 16 days left to hit that goal. Really $250,000 dollars - Shakes head disapprovingly.  Price for said Doorbot is $169 - so it is not cheep at roughly half the price of an iPad Mini.  However if you would like to monitor who is at your door on your iOS device - which for those that are mobility impaired - this is something you will want to check out at christiestreet dot com search for doorbot - or look for the link in the show notes for ep 253.

Thanks to Margaret for the heads up on StickNFind - one word which is a project over at Indiegogo - This one is for blue tooth stickers that you place on items you want to be able to find via your iOS device that are within about 100 feet. Think Car Keys, Remote, other iOS devices, The Cat, Your Parents or what ever you want to stick these on to. The project had a goal of $70,000 - and I use past tense as they blew past that and are over $450,000 in pledges. This one will complete on Jan 14th at 11:59 PM PT. 2 stickers will set you back $35, 4 stickers will cost $65, 6 stickers for $90 and there are other price break downs. So if you have things, pets or people around your house you need to keep track of - this might be a project you want to check out. Again it is called StickNFind - one word and it is over at Indiegogo dot com. And link is in the show notes for ep 253 of course.

    Hi Rob,

Here is my review of the Brydge:

I am writing to you today from my Black Polycarbonate Brydge bluetooth keyboard.  I was not an investor because 220 seemed a bit steep for me.  I was delighted to discover that they came out with a cheaper plastic speakered version for the holidays for only 120.  I love it.  It's black so it looks great with my black iPad.  It has transformed my ipad experience from a device where I consume information and flag communications that require a later response to a device that I actually want to write on.  In the past, I would receive an email on my iPad and flag it for later.  Short emails were possible but longer communications, especially if they included copying and pasting from other docs, was frustrating and slow.  The look and feel of my iPad is nothing short of a notebook computer.  The hinges are durable and seem well constructed.  The unit goes to sleep when closed and awakens when opened.  There are brightness, volume and media player buttons as well as a reveal keyboard button, a search button, a lock button and a home button on the keyboard.  Easily attached, easily removed, this product is a dream.    I only have one complaint and word of advice for others:  my brydge came with ipad 2 fitted silicone shims on the hinges and a big warning that the factory installed shims are for ipad 2 use only.  My ipad 3 fit and was nice and snug.  It took a bit of elbow grease to get the iPad out.  However, based on the warning and my own paranoia, I removed the factory installed shims and replaced them with ipad 3/4 silicone shims.  The results? First, the factory did a better job than I did and second, the ipad 2 is smaller in depth so my ipad 3 was tighter in the original shims.  Now it is much easier to remove my ipad for the hinges.  It certainly won't fall out but I sort of miss how solid the whole thing felt originally.  I regret removing the original shims.    Happy New Year

    Daniel

one Kickstarter project sending money back to users is the POP charging station - it was supposed to be a charging station where you could charge up iOS devices with both 30 pin and lightning connectors.  They will be giving back almost 140k to funders making it the biggest refund ever on Kickstarter - so are they doing this because they tried and failed - NOPE - they are doing this because Apple will not let them make a charger that has both a lightning plug and a 30 pin or any other type plug. Yup so Apple had them kill this project and send back the money.  Which really - Apple ? Really - It is bad enough you changed the charging port - but now you will not even let those of us with both 30 pin device and lightning devices have a single charging station - is that really so much to ask for - Booo Apple Booo.

Business Insider has a chart from research firm Citi - that shows that about 54% of iPhone owners surveyed wanted a screen size larger than the iPhone 5's.  43% were happy with the current screens and 3% said - Cream - no I don't need an cream.  Of course this might not be what they really need - just what they think they need - you know the grass is greener on the other side - until you try to use your thumbs to type on a 5" phablet device or put it in your front pocket.

Chromatik is an app that is getting some press as it seems some VC's are falling over themselves to help fund this app - as they already have raised over $2 mil dollars - congrats guys.  If anyone has used this app please call in or write in with a review.  The app is described as digital sheet music plus a tool for recording music and it uses the iPad mic to make sharing and storing sound bites easy.  And of course if you used this app to create any music - please send it in for the beginning of the show music.

    Hi Rob,

As a parent, I thought you like to know.

    Regards,

    John

    http://www.dailytech.com/FTC+Pushes+for+Data+

    Collection+Transparency+in+Childrens+Apps/article29387.htm

And what John is talking about is that the FTC is pushing for better data collect transparency in kids apps - no not that data collection devices are transparent - but that those collecting data are transparent in their collection methods.  The FTC study looked at 400 childerens apps currently in either or both Apples App store and Google Play store.  Of these 60% collected and transmitted info about the device to developers.  And of that 60% only 20% gave a disclaimer about their data collection.  They also said other app related issues like in-app advertising and in-app purchases - need to be reviewed and corrected.  Or as a parent you could you know - just make sure your kid does not have your password to make in app purchases - or better yet - delete out the apps that have said in app purchases and are geared towards kids.

    Hi, Rob...

I was hoping Siri on my non-jailbroken iPhone 5 would give me spoken reminders based on time or location. I need them while driving, and visual reminders are a major distraction.

    Unfortunately, no soup for me.

Is there a way to do this, maybe with 3rd party apps? Or should I just hope that a future update willl include the feature?

    REGARDS,

    Philip in Vermont

Rob, I am looking for a developer to build and fully dynamic social networking app for ios, iPhone specifically. Do you know of any developers or heard of any good groups that won't put a dent in your pocket but can be depended on? Please get back to me as soon as possible.

    Hi Rob,

This is an interesting Cydia tweak:

    http://stereopsis.com/flux/

It allows you to set up a different color temperature for night time use on your iOS device and automatically switches to it on sunset.

I've set it up on my iOS devices and am currently testing it out. It's pleasing to look at, especially in cases where the lowest brightness setting on my iPad was still a tad too bright.

Of course, there are times when you need color accuracy. Then you can just disable the tweak in the settings app or the app that comes with it also comes with a feature to temporarily disable it for an hour.

For those that are worried about CPU / memory use, the tweak is very small and the dev says that it just uses CPU when the color temperature is actually changed.

    Cheers,

    Sebastian

Hi rob happy new year !!

Is there a way to restrict or have a pass code for just messages and emails? As my neices and nephews always use my iPhone .. Don't really want them reading them - a pass code for everything is a pain if I have to do it every time I pick up the phone ..

    Regards,

    Natasha

Well Tash - I will through that one out the jailbreak crowd on which app they prefer for said job.  I know in the past we talked about a few tweaks to lock down specific apps or folders and then you put the apps you want protected in a folder you keep locked.  If anyone is using one of these tweaks on iOS 5.x please let us know - 206-666-6364 - that 206-moon-dog.

    Rob,

Is there a way to look-up previously entered passwords such as those for wireless access point SSID's that have been previously entered?  This is easy to do in OS X with keychain, and for passwords managed by browsers like FireFox.

I've been using Personal Hotspot on my iPhone 4S to support several family iPads.  There are times when it just doesn't work and the Apple Genius Bar says the first thing to do is to try Reseting the Network in IOS.  This means losing all of the previously entered network passwords and friends and family homes.  At least if I could grab  them with something like Keychain, it would be a little easier.

    Anything?

    Regards,

    -Joe

Thanks to Levi and others that sent in this next one. Which is good news for those that want to keep jailbreaking around and that is Hackulous has shut down and the installous app gone.  I really never talked about installous on the show - other than maybe to say I did not approve of it.  It was an jailbreak app that allowed people to pirate other apps - and was what made many think jailbreaking meant pirating - which it does not.  It is funny there was a time when the Tii app if it was installed with installous would not work - and people would email asking why the Tii does not work - and I would say are you jailbroken and do you have installous - and well I would laugh.  Really don't email the app owner if the pirated version does not work - kind of uncool.

Any way good news that Installous is no more.  Ding Dong the witch is dead.

    Hi Rob,

I wanted to talk about Auxo A sweet little tweak for switcher. Works smooth. I also have switchy running to give a double layer switcher and use springtomize To shrink the icons slightly. Fully compatible as I far as I can tell so far. Now has IOS 5.1x comparability.

    http://www.idownloadblog.com/2012/12/30/auxo-for-ios-5-x-now-available-on-cydia/

    Regards,

    Levi

Thanks Levi and others that sent in info on this - Auxo is a very cool redesign of the app switcher - As the video for it shows - this is what Apple should have done and should really steal for iOS 7.  In the switcher - rather than the icon it shows a shronken version of the open app.  and to close an app you swipe down on it in the app switcher - if you tap and hold on one of the open apps - it asks if you want to close out all open apps - Yeah team - That right there makes it worth the $1.99 in the cydia app store.  There are other really cool features as well such as improved music controls - and two rolls of toggles.  Such as the Wifi or bluetooth toggles.  This is a really really good jailbreak tweak.  This is why Apple needs Jailbreaking - it is where good ideas can come from.  If you are not jailbroken - then you need to hope someone at apple is seeing this and taking notes - and then hope and pray it is in iOS 7 - but for those that are jailbroken - you just need a buck 99 and you can have it installed asap.  Thanks again all that sent this one in.

If you are someone that likes to upload lots of videos to Youtube and want to do it quickly and easily and want to do a little touch up on the videos before - such as color correction, trimming and adding music tracks - from some built in music tracks.  Then you may want to check out the app Youtube capture - it is free in the app store.  A new version just went up today.  I like the rotate to start feature - where you hold the iPhone vertically but once you rotate into landscape mode it starts recording.  Again did I mention it was free and is zip nadda zilch - no cost to you.  Search for Youtube Capture - two words in the app store.

Just an update about an update to the Squrl app - Since the last episode they have added Search history and suggestions - both nice features.  Again the Squrl app is free and spelled s q u r l - if you like search out for new videos - the squrl app is for you.  I mean unless you like just being stuck searching in Yuotube - then well fine be that way - but for those looking to search outside the box - then there is squrl.

    Rob,

I recently heard the podcast regarding how someone was not able to see the apps he had downloaded in the past on the App store on his iOS device. I had a similar problem, so I looked at my app purchases on iTunes on my iMac and found that I had over 1,600 downloads! Therefore, I hid about 1,100 apps from my history, and now I can see my purchased apps on my iOS device. Thanks for the podcast. Love your show!

    Hello Rob,

I'm writing on behave of my boss. He's looking for a way to record the screen of the iPhone. It would be a feed from a security camera that gets forwarded to his phone that he wants to record. I know jail breaking would be the easiest but that's not for him. I know it's a long shot, but I also know your audience is a great group of collective minds.

Thank you for all that you do,

    DJ Medina

    Rob,

First off, I love your show and have been an avid listener for the past 4yrs. My question today is, I upgraded to the iPhone 5 with Sprint, I would like to take my 4s and unlock it to use on AT&T or Verizon. How do I go about doing this? Everything I read online states Sprint only unlocks the GSM for international usage. Thanks keep up the great work, hope you were nice and Santa stopped by..and if you were naughty I'm sure your better half will take care of that...

    David

    Hi David,

You will need to call Sprint or go to one of their locations.

Tell them you upgraded your iPhone to the 5 - and you have the 4S you purchased through them that is now not on an account and you want to get it unlocked for use when you travel out of the country.  Tell them you are looking for a permanent unlock.  As long as you are in good standing with your account - they should unlock it - that would allow you to use it on any GSM carrier - US or International.  But not Verizon.

I will also check on the show - but I think that is the best you can do - and it will also depend on who you talk to - so I would suggest calling Sprint first - if they say no - or "they can't" which is really just no - then go to the local Sprint store.  Or wait a few minutes and call them back. It seems a lot of times how much help you get depends on who you get on the phone.

    Hi Rob,

Per the AT&T $100 credit on the iPad This time it's good regardless of where you purchased the device.

    John

    Gilbert, AZ

Hi John thanks for the heads up - so if you buy an iPad or iPad mini any flavor as long as it is LTE - and you sign up with AT&T for a 2 year agreement - you get $100 credit on your bill.  So no matter where you purchased it or even if it was given to you - if it has LTE and you sign up for a 2 year as in 24 month commit - you can get a $100 credit.  This is even true if you sign up for the $10 mobile share option.  which really makes it a $5 dollar and 83.3333 cent plan.  Unless you cancel in the next two years - then there is a $150 early termination fee.

A quick reminder I will be speaking at blogworld new media expo in Las Vegas - which will be going on from Jan 6th to the 8th - I will be speaking about how to podcast 100% from an iPad and my speech is Monday the 7th at 10:30 AM Las Vegas time.  We at Libsyn will also have a booth at the show - booth 517 - please stop by and say hi - and get your picture taken with me or if you are libsyn customer - with the libsyn team.  If you want to save 20% off a New media pass - use promo code Walch20 - that is w a l c h 2 0 - that is c h - not s h.  Walch20.  Hope to see some of you at the show.  I am also speaking on Tuesday the 8th again at 10:30 AM LV time - and that one is a panel about podcast distribution.  But other than those times I will be at the Libsyn booth.  Hope to see you there.  Hey and I also got my press passes for CES - I will be over at CES on Wednesday the 9th.  And yes that is the last time you have to hear that reminder.

As always if you have any comments questions answers to others questions tips tricks app reviews product reviews rumors speculations rants or anything else related to iOS is some way give us a call - 206-666-6364 that 206-moon-dog or email us at today in iOS at gmail dot com.  If you have not purchased the Tii App - it is just $2.99 in the app store and not just the best way to consume this show - but with push notifications - you get to find out when there is breaking news or special deals.  Plus it helps support the show.
