Hi Rob,
I received my ipad1 as a Christmas gift.
The person who bought it for me thinks he purchased AppleCare with it. But, can't remember for sure, and can't find the receipt. Is there an easy way to find out without bringing it in to an Apple store?
Thanks and keep up the great work.

I had a few people email in asking on my thoughts on the Kindle Fire. Here is what will go up on the show tonight:
I would love to tell you today's show was delayed so that I could get more info on the new Amazon Tablet - but the reality is it had more to do with Allergies and contents of my stomach not wanted to stay there. Neither alone is good when trying to record a show but combined there was nothing I could do. I bring this up because with the Kindle Fire - and it priced at $199 - I am sure there are more than a few Android tablet makers that had the same issues with their stomach that I had last night. In a nut shell - I think this kills the rest of the Android tablets. And it will have its impact on the iPad as well - but more so with other android and none iOS tablets. The Fire from what was shown today is a very impressive device at just $199. It actually has a better resolution display than the iPad at 169 Pixels per inch vs 132 for the iPad. Hmm - Now that seems to be a place where the iPad 3 might be able to improve upon. In Some ways the Fire has raised the bar in a way Apple has to respond.
While Apple has been given grief about having just a home button the Fire - does not even go that far - just a power button - and not even buttons for volume. Expect that to be a point of contention for some. But really - with all the Android people poking sticks at the iPad and iPhone for lack of inputs and buttons - I am not going to go there with the Fire. It looks to be a minimally designed device that has some horse power and is simple to use - i.e. the iPad model. And it is less than half the price. Or half the price of the 16 GB iPad 1 when you can get them. The Fire is just 8 GB and it is really meant as a streaming device - in other words all your content is up on the cloud. For some that will be an issue - for many it will not. If you like the 11 point multitouch with the iPad - the 2 point dual touch of the Fire may be frustrating.
Is this an iPad killer No - I don't think such a thing exists. Is it a killer of all none-iPad Tablets - Yes - I think it is. This takes the low end of the market and blows it away. The iPad already has the high end. And everyone in between well they have their stomach feeling like mine was last night.

Well it is about Fracking time - Apple has finally sent out the invites for their next iPhone event - and it is October 4th and on the Cuppertino campus as had been rumored the past week or so.
But lets look at the artwork - for some subtle hints - that Apple likes to do with past invites.
The Phone icon has a 1 in the red circle - this may mean there will only be one new iPhone announced.
The Tag line however is really where it gets interesting. "Lets TALK iPhone" As in lets talk to the iPhone. As in this may go with those rumors / speculation that the iPhone 5 would have special speach recoginition features - ie from Siri and Nuance. That would also likley mean 1GB of RAM and of course the new A5 Processor.

Hi,Rob.
I jailbroke my iPodTouch4 and my iPhone3GS, using Jailbreakme.com. Unbelievably simple and quick.
But now, with iOS5.0 quickly coming up, I want to un-jailbreak(the iPod, at least)and experience the new iOS.
Can I just download iOS5,when it comes,or do I have to get rid of the jailbreak first? And,if so,could you let me know the best way to go about it and the steps?
What I hate to lose most from the jailbreak are the ability to make different folders for my photos and, even worse, the hot spot on my 3GS. But, my iPodT4 has gotten slow and kid of buggy. So, I definitely want to get that ready for the iOS5.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
Take care,
Ray
Hi Ray,
In the recent past - there has been no issue in upgrading from a Jailbroken iOS device to the latest version of iOS. And all indications are that trend will continue when iOS 5 is publicly released. This means all you will need to do is update to the latest version of iOS and your jailbreak will be blown away and the last version of iOS (5.0) will be installed on your device. This will of course mean ALL your jailbreak apps will also be removed when you do the update.
If you wany to actually get your devices where they are no longer jailbroken prior to iOS 5 upgrade being available - you can do an update to iOS 4.3.5 today. This also will blow away your current jailbreak and remove all jailbreak apps and features. And that of course mean no more tethering with a jailbreak app. Please note once you update to iOS 4.3.5 - you will not be able to jailbreak that version with a non-tethered jailbreak. So don't do this unless you are 100% committed to give up the jailbreak apps.
Best of Luck.

Hi Rob,
Is there an untethered jailbreak for IOS 4.3.5?
Cheers,
John
Hi John,
So far (9/22/11) there are only Tethered Jailbreaks for iOS 4.3.5. Red Sn0w 0.9.9b1 is the latest version of Jailbreak that actually does jailbreak iOS 4.3.5 and also iOS 5 - but again it is a tethered jailbreak. Which means you need to be connected to your computer when you reboot the iOS device.
It does not sound like there will be an untethered jailbreak specifically for iOS 4.3.5 - as current efforts seem more focused on iOS 5.x

Hi Rob:
My iPhone 4's screen went haywire today, all of a sudden. The screen is zoomed in and I can see about a quarter of the regular size screen. And I cannot move around the screen. As a result, I cannot swipe the top or bottom bar or key in the PIN code to unlock it. I tried a hard reset and restoring it, deleted a couple of apps I had updated earlier today but to no avail. Do you or your listeners know what is causing this and how to solve it? Thank you for all your effort in putting this excellent podcast together.
Sam
Hi Sam,
I had this happen to me once when I was playing around with the Zoom feature in the Accessibility settings.
To Un-Zoom (or change the Zoom) - With 3 fingers, double-tap and drag up or down.
To Move around the screen - drag three fingers while zoomed.
And once you change the zoom resolution back to normal you may want to turn off zoom.
To Turn off zoom go to the Settings App --> General --> Zoom --> Turn "Off"

Hi Rob,
I heard AT&T is going to start throttling data for their highest users. I just jail broke my iPhone two months ago, and I'm tethering with PDA net. Any indications what a " highest user " would be? I'm averaging about 5 to 6 gigabytes a month?
Thanks
Lamer
Hi Lamer,
You would definitely be in their highest users group. AT&T has said in the past the majority of their users - use much less than 2GB a month and anyone over 2GB is in their top 5% of users. So I would imagine you are in their top 1%. Sorry.
There is always Sprint - Hopefully - that offers unlimitted and un-throttled bandwidth - for now. Well again hopefully as far as the iPhone goes that is.

Hi Fred,
I need to ask a few questions.
1. Did you try upgrading the apps on iTunes first and then doing a sync?
2. Are you using any iTunes store apps you get via jailbreaking? In other words do you have any pirated Apps?
3. Are you getting the error message about not being able to connect the iTunes store on your iPhone via the iTunes app or from your computer?

Hi Rob,
Do you know of any jailbreak apps that send a call directly to voice mail. Sort of a "do not disturb". Also, any apps that block individual numbers. I'm a newbie jail breaker.
Thanks.
Lamar
Hi Lamar,
There is a jailbreak app called - CallBar - that puts incoming calls in a small bar and keeps them from interupting what you are (angry birds) doing.
Then there is an app called - Call Blocker - Which sounds closer to what you want to do - it blocks calls from either All numbers or specific numbers (crazy Ex's).
You might also want to look at the service YouMail - which does not require jailbreaking. This also alows for you sending people right to voicemail - it is a free service and they have an app that goes with it - Aptly named the YouMail App
I would recommend starting off with YouMail to see if it does all that you want - and if not then add in the jailbreak apps above.

Hi Rob,
I think one of your podcasts talked about an App that could read a web site to you. So it would basically turn the text on a web page into audio. I'm taking a class where I'm assigned lots of reading of long articles online. It would be oh so great if I could listen to these while I run or drive instead of having to sit still and read them.
Yours truly, multitasker at heart
Jennifier
Hi Jennifer,
I believe we were just talking about the Voice Over features built into to iOS 4. That said there are a few different apps in the app store for doing Text to Speech for Websites:
Knowtilus Pro
SpeakText
Voice Reader Text to Speech
TextToSpeech
I only put up the link to the Knowtilus Pro app as that is one I own and have used. So maybe I mentioned it on the show in the past.
It works really well reading out a website from Text to Speech. The voice is a little on the mechanical side - but it does a good job taking most any webpage and reading the text - including working for the Tii website.
One thing that separates it from many of the text to speech apps - is this one does not require copying and pasting the content of the site. You just go to the URL and tap on "Say". You can also have an option for a small video window showing a computer animated females head reading the text - Yes that is a little bit of fluff.
I really like that it works in the background - so you can find a long article on the web and start it reading and then put the app into the background and then go and do some other tasks.
It is not the cheapest App as it is $9.99 - but it works.

Rob W

Dear Rob.
I remember some time ago you asked for suggestions on the ways to hold the iPhone on a plane (remember the barf bag stand, that never worked for me). Well I travel every week, NJ to CO and often hold it (arm hurts after a while) or lay it flat on the table (leaning over it make the back hurt) while I listen with my Bose headphones. Today it struck me! The Bose headphone case has two bumps for the earpieces that could serve and a nice back to rest the iPhone on for viewing. Viola, it fits and stays put in the case. If you have a set of these, the pocket for the extra connectors is attached with Velcro so you can move it to make sure it holds your iPhone in place. Sweet!!

I had a reporter from Inc.com ask me a few questions on what I thought the iPhone 5 would be like and some other questions with regards to business users. Below is his questions and my answers. I will be talking more about the iPhone 5 in coming episodes.
1. What do you think will be 5-6 new features of the iPhone 5?
1. Upgraded camera to an 8 Mega Pixel camera module. In iOS 5 - Apple has added a few features that are focused on the camera - such as using the volume button as a shutter control and adding quick access to the camera from the lock screen - so an upgraded camera for the iPhone 5 that will be running iOS 5 seems to be a lock.
2. Upgrade of the CPU to the A5 - which is the same processor in the iPad 2. This follows last years process when the iPad 1 had the A4 Processor first and then when the iPhone 4 came out it also had the A4. Apple will also likely bump up internal ram from 512 MB to 1 GB - but likely will not even mention this. Other than the CPU - Apple does not like to talk much about the internals of the iPhones.
3. For Business Travelers - especially on Verizon - the biggest upgrade will be in making it a true world phone. With a chipset that allows for both CDMA and GSM use from the same phone. This chip set is already in the Verizon iPhone 4 - but the Verizon iPhone 4 is not optimized to use both GSM and CDMA. The iPhone 5 - will be designed from the ground up to be a true world phone.
4. Enhanced Voice Controls / Voice Recognition in iOS 5 - just for the iPhone 5. This will take advantage of some features from their Siri acquisition and also from work with Nuance. Expect much greater voice recognition and voice controls with the iPhone 5. Something to be appreciated by the business person on the go.
5. Enhanced Video out / HDMI out - through a dongle and Mirroring of the screen to an external projector - like with the iPad 2.
6. It will NOT be an LTE / 4G phone. LTE is just not widely available yet - especially when you look at the hand full of test markets that AT&T just has. So at this point - it does not seem to make much sense for Apple to go with an LTE phone on Verizon or AT&T. Plus with both of them restricting data usage - with an LTE smartphone you could burn through your monthly data cap in less than an hour.
2. For business users, is this going to be a no-brainer upgrade? Why or why not?
Yes - Especially for those that travel internationally. Having one phone that can work on any US or international carrier will make going to the iPhone 5 an easy decision. Additionally the advanced voice control / recognition options are likely going to making working on the go easier and safer especially when driving.
3. What can a business user do to prep for the new model in terms of
support in the workplace, expected costs, etc.?
The biggest thing to do to save on costs at this point is to hold off upgrading to new handsets until the iPhone 5 is available. If the goal of IT is to get everyone using the same handsets - then upgrading now just weeks before a new iPhone is available will mean companies will have to pay the full unsubsidized pricing for the iPhone 5.
Per migrating from an iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS to the iPhone 5 - there really is not much to do - other than to make sure you keep backing up your phone on a regular basis. Apple makes upgrading to a new phone drop dead simple.
The most important thing a business user can do - is get approval to purchase the next iPhone now. It is likely going to be sold out or hard to get ahold of for many months when it does get released. So if you want one early - best to get your approval ducks in a row now. If you don't get approval until a few weeks after it is launched - you may not be getting one until sometime in 2012.
4. How has the Android OS encroached on the iPhone in terms of
business features?
I don't believe it has. Supporting the iPhone in a business environment has been a focus of Apple. From security features that have been added with each update of iOS to additional support for exchange. Including in iOS 5 - wirelessly sync'g Exchange tasks. Also for IT departments - it is easier to support the one or two iPhone handsets and one version of iOS - then it is to support the 70+ handsets on Android and the half a dozen versions of Android OS.
On the Android front you hear now of more and more mal-ware and other security issues. This is something you just don't have to deal with on the iOS side. Add in all the different version of the Hardware manufacturer tweaks to the Android OS - and you get a greater and greater fragmentation of the Android ecosystem - which just means more work for IT managing all that.
5. Can Apple possibly keep the momentum going with each new iPhone in
terms of capturing market share, etc.? How will they do that?
Apple will also likely add Sprint to the list of carriers in the US that will get the iPhone. Right now the iPhone 4 even though it is 14 months old is still the number one selling smartphone handset on both AT&T and Verizon. The iPhone 5 will be the number one selling handset on AT&T, Verizon and now Sprint - thus increasing the number of units sold each quarter to new records.
I don't think Apple is overly focused on overall Market share. But rather on increasing the numbers sold each quarter. Expect stock outages through out College basketball season.

Hi Rob,
Yesterday I became the target of someone texting me that I don't know, and is eating up my number of texts. I called At&t and their options were rather limited. Change phone numbers or pay $4.95 a month to block up to 15 numbers. Being the cheap bastard that I am I figured there might be an app for that.... not my cheapness, but blocking texts from your phone. Ever heard of one??
|
Hi Steve,
There are not apps for either - Blocking nor cheapness - I am sad to say. Ok - well that is not 100% true - there is the Free App a Day App.
Per Text Spam - Getting texts from someone that you do not want them from is a big issue - and that AT&T charges you to block spam texters is really a big load of @#$%.
I can't speak per how every one of the 190+ carriers that has the iPhone deals with this.
(NOTE - if you are on a carrier other than AT&T and they have a better / free solution for blocking Texts - Please add a comment below.)

Hello Rob,
The schools are afraid of texting, Facebook, cheating using google. Is there a way to use assignment books, ebooks, calendars memos in a way that schools would accept?
Sincerely,
Hi Cindy,
Absolutely. And it is pretty easy at that.
First you should set up an iPad or iOS device where you can restrict access to install new apps.
To do that go to the Settings App - then General - then select Restrictions. You will need a passcode set up for this. Make sure you note it somewhere safe. If you forget it - only doing a complete factory restore will get you access to change anything.
Next you can turn off access to Safari, Youtube, the Camera, Facetime, iTunes and Ping.
So by doing this you could restrict the access to just the apps you install and want the students to use.
You can also restrict your wifi network to block facebook and other sites - and let them use safari.
So there are ways to make the iPad school safe.
Does this mean they will not figure a way around it - no - some are going to be too smart for their own good.
But overall you can make an iOS device school friendly if needed and very easily at that.

Hi Rob,
With the new iPhone hopefully being released right around the corner what is ATT's policy towards purchasing if you still have until August 2012 before completing your contract?
Do they give you any help at all?
Regards,
Steve R
Hi Steve,
First thing you should do is check your status for an upgrade on your iPhone by calling *639# - (Which is *NEW#)

Once you hit call - you will see the following Message:

What is supposed to be a short time later (your results may vary) you will get a text message sent to you that will look something like this:

This message will let you know when you can upgrade to a new iPhone at no additional cost, along with what the cost would be now to upgrade. Above is the message I received when I checked on July 31st 2011. I just sent another request and once it comes in I will see if there is any difference and update.
Please note when you are able to upgrade is not just based on a fixed date for all customers - how much your monthly plan is will effect when you are eligilble to upgrade at no cost - so make sure you check from your phone.

Rob W

Rob
I did this by taking a screenshot of the tii app and then used the Photoshop Express app to crop, rotate, soft convert to B&W, add rainbow effect, halftone and round border.
Enjoy,
Sergio

I just posted up an interview I did with Mark Hearn from Sprintfeed.com
You can hear the interview in the player in the upper right of the site.
I will also put this up on Ep 189 when it goes live - but VIP members have access now to the interview.

Rob W
