In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote “Apple’s iPad will possibly face more competition in the large tablet market as BlackBerry appears to be gearing up for a release of its own tablet device. According to a leaked roadmap document, BlackBerry may be planning a late 2013 release for a device tentatively named the B10, reports TechnoBuffalo. unquote

Nathanael Arnold, Wall St Cheat Sheet, 31 March 2013

So lets gets this right - as recent as March 2013 - someone thought something from blackberry was going to be in competition with something from Apple.  Yikes - oh wait - Nat-eeee was from WALL ST cheat sheet - Wall Street reporters NEVER EVER have understood Apple - Accounting types on Wallstreet have a hard time thinking outside the Beige box - Just Sayin

For promo codes this week we have codes for the app SNAP-AN-ACTOR one word

Here is the written review of the app.

    quote

"6 months ago, I had never touched a MacBook, let alone wrote any apps for the app store.  I always held developers in high regard and never dreamed I would be writing my own apps.  They say the best apps grow from a problem or need and this is exactly how Snapanactor was born.

As a movie lover, I would often be watching a TV show or movie and not be able to remember where I knew someone from on screen. They would look familiar but I couldn't quite place them.  Sure, I could Google them and try to find out which roles they had played or I could go to a well known movie app and enter their name and then drill down, but what if you don't know their name?

I bought a used MacBook Pro from eBay, read book after book, took many online courses and here we are 6 months later with my solution to the problem.  Simply open up Snapanactor, point your device (iPod, iPhone or iPad) and take a photo.  Zoom in if you need to or you can load images from your camera roll.

After selecting your image, if the app finds a match, you will see their name, photo and roles they have played in the past. You can also use it to take photos of your family and friends to see who they resemble.  Hopefully your listeners will have as much fun using Snapanactor as I had developing it."

    http://www.redmondpie.com/ios-9.2.1-

    public-beta-1-now-available/

iOS 9.2.1 is available to both devs and the public.

If you do update to 9.2.1 beta 1 you can not restore to earlier versions of iOS - that means it is fixing a major security bug - or at least that is what it has meant in the past when you could not downgrade.

And if you look around - 9.2.1 is being reported to be a bug fixer - security update.  But then again that is usually true with most double dot updates.

This is one of those updates - that if you are a jailbreaker you need to stay far away from.  Per the rest of us - unless you are a dev - there is no real reason to update to the beta 1 - I mean unless you like giving Apple feedback as a beta tester - and in that case by all means do upgrade - as that is why they need beta testers.

It is highly unlikely Apple will release a beta 2 this year.  Maybe the week of Jan 4th - but if all went well with Beta 1 - you might see iOS 9.2.1 Gold Master released the week of Jan 4th.  Really will be about what the feedback on the beta is.  Double Dot updates do not tend to get many or sometimes any Betas.

Additionally Apple has stopped signing iOS 9.1 - so that means if you are at iOS 9.2 - you can no longer downgrade back for iOS 9.1 - Again this is more of a Jailbreakers issue.  But as mentioned above if you go to iOS 9.2.1 beta you can not go back to iOS 9.2 either.

    UnionPay-to-Bring-Apple-Pay-to-China.html

Apple put out a Press Release on Dec 18th titled - Apple & China UnionPay bring Apple Pay to China.  This follows up a recent rumor that said this was coming - so not a shocker.

China UnionPay cardholders will be able to add their bank cards to Apple Pay starting early in 2016.  quote after relevant tests and certification required by Chinese regulators unquote.

Apple says this support will be with China UnionPay and 15 of the largest banks in China.

More on this I am sure in the future.

    http://www.cbsnews.com/news/60-minutes-apple-

    tim-cook-charlie-rose/

Tim Cook and Johnny Ive and a few others were on 60 Minutes this past weekend talking about Apple and Apple Culture and Apples Taxes and Apple in China and Apples design philosophy and more words with Apple before them.

There was a soundbite advertising the segment in which Tim Cooke is clearly pissed for lack of a better word.

Charlie Rose asks quote But here's what they concluded. Apple is engaged in a sophisticated scheme to pay little or no corporate taxes on $74 billion in revenues held overseas.  unquote

To which you see the sound byte from Tim Cook: quote That is total political crap. There is no truth behind it. Apple pays every tax dollar we owe. unquote

Per what was learned that was new from the whole segment - really not much - well nothing really meaty.

We learned in 15 years - Johnny Ives Design team of 22 designers has lost 2 people total - just 2 in 15 years - that is amazing.

We also learned for the iPhone 6 and 6+ they had build up 10 different sizes / models to test before settling on the two that they did.

If you did not see the segment or even if you did - I have a link in the show notes to the transcript for it.

A lot of what was in the segment was old news or info - like when Charlie Rose asked why does Apple not bring home the 1 Million manufacturing jobs to the US.  As stated before on this show - it just is not possible - they infrastructure for assemblers / engineers and more just does not exist in the US to support that type of production.  What was not touched on is the US manufacturing really has been broken off into a few key areas.  1. Is the Auto industry.  2. Is the defense and Aerospace industries - which is not about low cost - it is about high reliability low unit turns. Basically the opposite of consumer electronics.  3. Large size and heavy consumer products - that don’t make as much sense to ship around the world - both household and sport and rec.  and 4th of course Energy related industries.  Any way - the one area the US economy is not set up for is large large scale consumer electronics.  And even if Apple wanted to it would be impossible to build iPhones and iPads in the US at any kind of scale.  I wish people would realize that and get off Apple’s back already.  Sorry - the US is just not going to be a high scale - low cost manufacturing hub for consumer electronics.  Asia is geared up for that - the US is not.

Again you can read the entire transcript or you could take those 10 to 15 minutes and do something productive.  Maybe I am into this too much - but I was pretty much like - mehhh - when I read the transcript.  But really I did not have any expectations that is was going to be a segment that revealed ground breaking news about Apple.

    http://www.businessinsider.com/iphone-sales-drop-

    decline-2016-say-morgan-stanley-stifel-baird-credit-

    suisse-apple-2015-12

Ah Wallstreet is up to their old tricks again - there have been a plethora of street reports about iPhone sales being a peak numbers now - and there is no room for it to grow.  And we are going to see decline for iPhone sales.

Some of this is based on a couple at best component suppliers - which as Tim Cook has said many times - don’t look at data points from one or a few suppliers to indicate a bigger trend.

Others based on the thought again Apple has peaked for iPhone sales.

Katy Huberty says Apple Fiscal 2016 iPhone sales will drop 6% vs 2015.  BS

And there are others on the street predicting lower iPhone sales as well.

Here is one thing I don’t see any of them talking about - Apple’s over all market share is still small compared to Android.  Apple is growing quite well in China - which if you do read the transcript from 60 Minutes - Tim Cook feels is where Apple’s biggest market will soon be - not the US.  And there is I believe a big pent up demand for a new 4” iPhone.  And while I don’t think it will be next quarter - it could launch in Q2 2016.  If Apple offers up a new 4” iPhone - I think you will see a nice step up in iPhone sales.

Apple also recently reduced pricing in India for the iPhone 5S - their market share in India is well - lets just say grouped in with other for good reason.

Apple has released new pricing models to make upgrading more attractive - they are growing in China, they are finally addressing India, they are still a small % of global market share, and they likely are launching a new 4” iPhone - combine this and fiscal 2016 should be a nice step up from fiscal 2015.

I guess it is possible the street could be right - I mean it has to happen some time - but I would be very surprised.  If you have some extra cash to invest - Now might be a good time to watch Apple stock - if it drops below $100 jump on it.  You could quickly get a nice 20% or more pop once apple announces this past quarters numbers.  PLEASE NOTE - I am just giving my opinion - any investments you do are at your own risk and never invest that which you can’t afford to loose.

    http://fortune.com/2015/12/16/apple-google-trending-searches/

In trends news - Google Released their 15th annual Year in search results - and in the Top 5 list for Consumer Tech - which Google seemed to try to burry and avoid were these results.

    5th place LG G4

    4th place - Apple’s iPad Pro

    3rd place - Apple Watch

    2nd place Samsung Galaxy S6

    and in first place

    Apple’s iPhone 6S

So Apple took home 3 of the top 5 spots.  Again - seems Apple is still trending well.  Maybe just Maybe Wall Street is once again wrong when it comes to Apple.

Another clear sign Wall Street is off their mark is this.

Apple’s Market cap right now is 598.4 Billion

Googles Market Cap is 514.3 Billion

If you remove Cash from their market caps

Apple’s Market Cap is 392 Billion vs Googles 442 Billion non cash Market cap.

When Google is valued more than Apple - where Apple is generating multiple times more revenue and profit - something is off kilter - we saw this before - and as I said then - either one is valued to much much too high or the other much much too low - or a combination of both. And last time I mentioned this - Apple stock nearly doubled.  Just sayin.  But hey you can go back to Ep 295 around the 8 minute 48 second mark to hear my comments back then.  Granted at that time Google’s Market cap less cash was 1.6 times Apples - this time it is just 1.13 times greater.

And I want to thank Harrys for sponsoring this episode and for helping young men and old men and all men in between learn the value of a good shave. Folks if you go to harrys dot com - that is h a r r y s dot com and use the promo code t i i - you will save $5 on your first order.

Harrys will give you the best shave at the best price and without all that hassle of having someone unlock the display at the store.  Price - Performance and Convenience.  In 2016 don't regret about foolishly squandering your money on Overpriced blades that dull quickly and take up a bunch of your time to get them at the store.  Besides who wants to go shopping at a store this time of year to get razors.

But Rob you ask - how can Harry’s provide the best shave at the best price? Simple - Harry's went and found a German blade factory that was almost 100 years old and purchased it.  Harry’s owns the most important part of the razor - the blade and by cutting out the middle men on both sides means they can keep the price low to you.

Plus Harrys as an organization helps those looking for jobs - by donating 1% of their sales and 1% of their time to help prepare people for professional success.  Yes a shave that feels great from a company you can feel great about.

I am 100% a full fledged Harrys customer - and have been for well over a year.  So if someone did not Love you this holiday season - time to love yourself with a self gift of a Harry’s razor.  What a great way to kick off the new year.

    Hi Rob,

I just wanted to let you know I have been using the AT&T Number Sync which went live in iOS 9.2 It is a great feature for AT&T customers who have multiple iOS devices. I now have cellular capabilities on my Wifi only iPad when it is connected to Wifi. You can place & receive cellular calls (using the FaceTime or Contacts app), send & receive text messages (SMS, not just iMessages) on the iPad. This works even when the iPhone it is paired to is not on the same Wifi network.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from JOHN CLARKE who posted the following

    Quote

How do you organize your apps on your iPhone? I have tried multiple different ways but haven't found anything that I really like.

Do you use folders and place like apps together? If so, what are your folder labels?

Do you keep your most used apps on your home screen?

    Do you keep them alphabetically?

Give me your ideas and suggestions.

    Unquote

Here are some of the responses.

    From Craig B

quote - I keep the ones I use often on the first page. The rest are in folders on the next two pages. Nothing fancy, but I know where most of them are. unquote

    From Jim K

quote I  follow Craig B's approach. My "Big Four" (Waze, Safari, Downcast and Mail) are on the bottom row. Others that I use most frequently are on the front page, including Phone, Weather (Yahoo), Music, Amazon, Slate, Twitter, Facebook, CBS Sports, etc. Those are located with ones I use the most at the bottom, within easy thumb reach.

I then have 24 folders on Page 2, in alphabetical order, with names like Apple Apps, Communications, Dining, Driving, Finance, Imaging, Listen, Nature, News, etc. I stick almost every non-Page 1/non-big 4 app in one of those folders. A few brand new apps may sit on Page 3 for a while, before I classify/file them.

    unquote

    From Francisco Tapia

    quote

I use a lot of apps, so I keep everything in groups unless I use the app a lot.

the most often used app groups are on the doc bar. Most of the time I don't start a text message I am replying to one so I access that app via the quick reply option on the lock or banner. If I initiate a text I usually use siri.

the other way to access an app that is tucked away on another screen in a folder is to swipe down and search for the app, it's usually faster and more accurate than asking siri to launch it.

    unquote

    Stephen William said quote

I like having my apps in alphabetical order

    unquote

    From Robert S

    quote

Lots of options, key is to set your goal first.  My goal is to keep most frequently used apps within easiest reach, minimize the number of clicks/swipes to launch less frequently used apps, and to optimize for the physical phone (I have an iPhone 6plus so the lower part of the home screen is "closer" then the upper part.)  Lastly, arrange infrequently used apps in a way that aids (re)discovery of them.

Keep in mind the different ways to launch an app when considering where to place it:

From the bottom icon dock (always the same on all screens)

From the Home Screen (pressing "Home" button gets you back fast)

    From special iOS shortcuts

    From a folder of apps

    From spotlight search screen

    From a special "launcher" app

    From a today screen widget

    A few "tricks":

Since swiping-up to reveal control center gets you the camera icon, I always move the camera off the home screen as it isn't needed.

I completely fill the home screen.  It's wasting a high-priority launching point to leave a blank space for "future use".  I simply move an icon to another screen/demote it when another app that is more important deserves to be on the home screen.

In the bottom dock, I have replaced one of the icons with a folder.  Many people aren't aware they can do this.  That puts six more apps only one click/swipe away from launching on every screen.  I call the folder "quick access" and sometimes change the contents if I am on a trip, extended business meetings, away from my normal routine, etc.

I use the app "Launch Center Pro" as one of my home screen apps to create sub-menus for frequently used apps that don't qualify for direct home screen locations.  I tend to use LCP for macro actions not just launching an app because it does take a little longer for LCP to load when you click on it.  Example: I have a messages section with icons/shortcuts to "send text message to Jack" which launches Messages app with the recipient already filled-in.  So I have traded-off the slightly slower launch to having several steps of using an app already done for me.

On the 2nd and following home screens, I have folders sorted alphabetically by topic with names such as Cloud, Entertainment, Finance, Games, Health, Home Control, Logistics, Music, Networking, News, Photography, Productivity, Security, Shopping, Social, Streaming, Travel, Utils, Videography, VoIP and Watch Apps.

Most of the time I will launch these apps by using Spotlight to search for them by name, but sometimes I will "Browse" my folders to look for apps I haven't used in a while that I either might want to start using more or maybe delete completely.

    unquote

Barry Smitherman - asked about arranging them by color - and shared a link where someone did that.  Let me say - ouch - tough to tell which app is which when you do all blue apps on one page and all green apps on the next and so on.  Looks pretty - but pretty impractical.

Personally what I do is once every few weeks - I go to Settings - then Battery - then for Battery Usage for the last 7 days - I see which apps I am using the most and make sure the top ones are on the first two screens - with the top top ones in the dock.

That said I do have a couple of key folders on my main home screen - one for Recording apps and one for Podcasting Apps and I also have the App store app in the top left with the Settings app next to it.

In a nut shell my most used 4 apps are in the dock and my most used apps 5 to 15 are on the home screen along with some stock apps and key folders.  Then some other key apps and folders on the page two.

After that it is just a mess with no organization at all.

    http://www.techerina.com/2015/12/apple-iphone-5s-

    gets-massive-price-cut-in-india.html

I mentioned earlier that the iPhone 5S just received a price cut in India.

What I did not say was the amount - which some articles describe as a massive price cut.

It now starts at 24,999  Rupees vs the price in September where it was 44,500 rupees.  That is a 43.8% price reduction.  And that 24,999 is the list price - there are other better prices such as from Amazon India and Snapdeal where you can get it for 21,499 Rupees or a 51.7% price reduction since September.

Now while a 51.7% price reduction is great in helping increase sales in India - it should still be pointed out the Average Monthly salary in India is pretty close to that 21,499 Rupee mark.

Hey Rob, I thought some of your listeners might find this innovation of interest.

    Regards,

    Max in North Carolina.

Hi Max - thanks for the heads up on this next one - which is an article titled - A SmartWatch for the visually impaired.

It is a bout a braille smartwatch that will translate texts, tweets and ebooks to braille on the watch face.

The smartwatch is called Dot and the current pre-order pricing is at $300.

The Braille Cell has 4 active dynamic Braille Cells.

It does support iOS - hence why we are talking about it on this show.

Now the bad news - Pre-order pricing does not mean pre-orders - so ordering is not yet available and there was no availability date listed.

I signed up for the newsletter and will update on this on future episodes.

Hey rob, a couple random questions..

Do you have any idea how apple was finally able to rid the iPhone of all those ugly regulatory logos that used to litter the back cover of the iPhone? They date back to at least the 3G, don't remember if my original iPhone 2G had them or not, but now on my new 6S, no more ugly logos! Just "iPhone" "S" and the normal "designed, assembled, model" etc. info. Such a clean look. Just wondering if you noticed or had any insight on that. I've attached a photo stitch in case you're wondering what the hell I'm talking about.

Also, what's up with iTunes no longer backing up apps from the iPhone when doing a backup?? I used to do all my updates on my iPhone via wifi as they came and then back them up to my MacBook later but now I either have to update on my MacBook and then sync to my iPhone or update them on both platforms. What gives??

    Regards,

    -AAron

Hi Aaron - per the icons for the FCC on the back - thank Senator Rockefeller and Fischer for that - they intro’d a bill back in 2014 to get rid of those required symbols - arguing it is expensive to etch them in and the savings could be passed on to consumers.  And hmmmm - lets see - the iphone 6S was how much cheaper then the 6?  Oh yeah - ok - well it might not have been cheaper - but it is prettier.

So there is that questions solved.

Per the other question about iTunes no longer backing up Apps from the iPhone when doing a back up?

I would ask why would you need to back up the apps themselves - the apps can be re-downloaded - what does need to be backed up is the App data - and that does appear to be getting backed up - but the actual IPA files- I think that is a waste of storage to  back them up - as again if needed they can be re-downloaded.

As we get ready to roll into 2016 - Yes this is the last Tii Episode for 2015.

There are many that like to make predictions - and Johnny Evans at Computer world has some for Apple for 2016.

One of which is the 4 Inch iPhone.  He is also predicting a thinner and water proof iPhone 7.  Not much of stretch there.

He predicts the iPad Pro will become an accepted Notebook replacement in the Enterprise space.

He also talks about person to person payments with Apple pay.

So tell me some of your Apple 2016 predictions - I will play / read them on the next episode - give me a call 206-666-6364 - that’s 206-moon-dog or send them to today in iOS at Gmail dot com.

It can be any Apple prediction that is iOS related.  And yes that does cover Apple TV.

I will go over my predictions with yours on the next episode.

    why-apps-really-hit-ios-before-android/

I wanted to thank all that sent in this next one.  Which well if you listen to the show - is something I have covered before - the title of the post is Why Apps really hit iOS before Android  and it was on The Next Web dot com - and well again it is what we have said here before.  And those reason per the article and past eps of this show - It is easier to develop for iOS - more support tools and a lot lot less fragmentation.  End users are actually using the latest version of the OS,  Much better demographics of end user and more likely to spend money on iOS side,  Testing on different iOS devices is a lot lot lot less intensive than trying to track down Android devices running the latest version.  So easier which means less time and less money - and more potential to make money if app is good.  IE BETTER ROI - is that not really the core of any business decision.  But you can read the article to see the long way that get to that quick conclusion by talking to multiple devs.

The last time I talked about Boll and Branch I mentioned they are the gift I choose for my Parents - I mean that should say it all on what I think of Boll and Branch - YES I am a customer.  No need for a warning for my parents this time - as it was already delivered to their house.

And yeah online Christmas buying is over kinda.  Lets say you received a great gift from a business associate or relative or significant other and your gift was non-existant or might as well have been.  Well you can still place an order for some great Boll and Branch products and get them delivered next week.

Or maybe when you were rushing out to Bed, Bath and Beyond and Target on the Dec 23rd you did not get you the gift she was looking for - sorry she was not looking for the craft beer or the Star Wars travel mug.  Well Valentines day is coming up.  And there is no better gift then Boll and Branch for Valentines day. And It is not to early to plan ahead.

She will love the new sheets and well she will love the new sheets - need I say More.

Boll and Branch makes the perfect gift for someone very special in your life - it can be for your wife or significant other or someone else you consider close.

The Product comes in a great box with very nice pouches - The presentation is incredible and the sheets are even better.

They also have Towels, Blankets, Hats and Scarves all made with 100% organic cotton.  So maybe buying sheets for someone that works for you might be taken the wrong way - but guying them a Hat or Scarf would not be.

And You can only get these great products at one place, Boll and Branch Dot Com, where you know you’re paying for quality product, and not department store overhead.

Boll & Branch not only treats customers fairly, but they treat their workers fairly too. Bedding has a bad reputation for sweatshops and child labor. You never have to worry about that with Boll & Branch. They're the first brand that's ever received Fair Trade Certification so you never have to worry about how or where they were made. Plus, they donate a portion of every sale to charity to help fight human trafficking. They don't just make great sheets, they're a great company too.

Go online to Boll – that’s  B-O-L-L and Branch Dot Com.

And they’ll let you try them risk free for 30 nights.

    Hi Rob

I am upgrading from 5s to a 6s and backed up to iTunes and then restored to the 6s. However when I get calls from people who I expect to have contact details for I only see the phone number, no name. When I compare the 2 phones no sim in 5s now on the 5 s some contacts appear in bold and others not bold. How do I ensure I get all the contacts, please.

Thanks to Dr. John for the heads up on this next one.

For those that still use Google Maps you will be happy to know if you don’t already - that the latest update to Google Maps for iOS brings with it offline Navigation support.  Users can also download a region on the map also for offline use.  Thus using GPS and other location services to update your location on the map when an internet connection is not possible.

Now a spokesperson from Google did say it may take a few weeks before all the offline capabilities make it out to all users.

Another new feature with this update of the Google Maps app is the addition of up-to-date Gas prices when you search for gas stations.

For those that like taking live photos with the 6S or 6S+ and those that like sharing photos on Facebook - great news for you - Facebook has started supporting live photos.

When you upload a Live Photo - you just follow the same process that you always did when uploading a boring old still or dead photo.  If the new photo you are uploading happens to be a live photo you will now see a “live” box appear in the bottom right of the image.  Just tap that box to upload as a live photo and then all your friends can see.

Thanks to everyone sending in links on Best buy deals.  Seems Best Buy figured out how to finally give serious discounts to Apple product - maybe they negotiated that when they agreed to put Apple Watch’s in all their stores - but what ever the deal - you the consumer are the winner.  There are big discounts on iOS and Mac devices.  So if you are looking to purchase something with an Apple logo on it - you will want to check your local best buy first to see what deals they have.

    Hi Rob,

IS there any way to optimize photos selectively, like having an album be full resolution, while the majority are optimized. Using iOS 9?

    Tim

Hi Rob, I updated my iPhone 6s Plus and my iPad air and just did notice a problem.  It is kind of obscure, so most users might not notice it, but I did. If you open the iCloud drive icon, and try to play an MP3 file you are no longer able to listen to it in the background. It will automatically stop when the auto lock engages. I called Apple and they had no idea what was wrong and the gentleman told me that most people wouldn't listen to their music there anyway. That is beside the point. It used to work so it still should. Apparently the audio file is opening in QuickTime. Did anyone else notice this? Thank you and hopefully they will get it fixed soon. Jill

    Hi Rob

There are seven members of our family who use iOS devices.  You can have a maximum of six people in a family Linking Devices. We want to share a family calendar. Unfortunately this means that we are always having to invite one person to any event. Is there any way of setting up a calendar, without sharing publicly,, where we can automatically include seven people in the calendar? Thanks for a great show full of very useful information.

    millennium-copyright-act/

There is one story I kept pushing off from October - as I needed some time to read up on it.  But it is per a document released in October called - Section 1201 Rulemaking - Sixth Triennial Proceeding to determine exemptions to the Prohibition on Circumvention.    And not this has nothing to do with a bris.

This is about Jailbreaking Tablets and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

I could read you the ruling - but it is very confusing per the actual words.

Let me give you the short version as of October 25th 2015 - the library of congress green lit Jailbreaking Tablets - saying they are exempt from the DMCA rules as they previously had also ruled for Smartphones.  So now yes - iPhones and iPads and even Apple TV’s can legally be jailbroken.

Or quote In this final rule, the Librarian of Congress adopts exemptions to the provision of the DMCA’ that prohibits circumvention of technological measures that control access to copyrighted works, codified in section 1201(a)(1) of title 17 of the United States Code. As required under the statute, the Register of Copyrights, following a public proceeding, submitted a Recommendation concerning proposed exemptions to the Librarian of Congress. After careful consideration, the Librarian adopts final regulations based upon the Register’s Recommendation.  unquote  Ah I love Government documents.

I think it's alright to remove the headphone jack in iPhone 7 as long as Apple supplies a dock with 2 lightning ports and an additional 3.5 mm jack as a standard accessory (So you can listen music and charge at the same time). I know this will never happen but just a thought.

    TRANSCRIPT FOR EPISODE 376

Welcome to the show I am your host Rob and this is the Today in iOS podcast -  First up I want to thank RUSSEL for sending in the music you hear in the background. RUSSEL  wrote:

    Hello Rob,

I am excited to share this song with you as it is being pitched to be on TV. This song contains 4 separate guitar parts, drums, violins, and cello all created on my iPad with Garageband.  If it's ok I'd also like to make a shout out to the best step-dad in the world, Clay Holbrook who is probably listening to this show right now. Thanks for all you do. Hope your audience and yourself enjoy this song. Regards,

    Russell Campise (CAMP-EASY)

    From Las Vegas

Thanks RUSSELL for the music and folks I will put the full song at the end of the episode.   I also want to thank SAUL for sending in the Artwork for today's show.  SAUL wrote the following:

    Hi Rob,

Here's some artwork I put together to capture a number of things. I wanted to capture Christmas with the red and green wrapping which doubles as the best podcast known to man kind covering "Apple" with the crossing "Today In IOS badging" which also doubles as light sabers crossing, Star Wars in the back ground as a stage to the complete nature of the artwork and then of course the meme love is there with word play about Steve jobs and Tim Cook being the head of house hold of Apple. I used the Over app for all the verbiage and color.

Merry Christmas Rob and fellow listeners of the Today and iOS podcast.

    Regards

    Saul Lowery

Thanks SAUL, for sending in this artwork and folks you can see SAUL'S artwork in the FREE Tii App via the BONUS button for ep 376 - or at instagram.com/todayinios and also as a stand alone post in the VIP section and at Facebook.com/todayinios.

If you have some artwork and or music you have created on your iOS device that you would like to share with the audience please email it to me at today in iOS at gmail dot com and please make sure to include which app or apps you used to create said artwork and or music.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following:  Quote:

QUOTE I sincerely hope that science and scientists differ from science fiction and its practitioners. Heaven help us if they don't: We may be headed for a very boring world indeed. Strip Star Wars of its often striking images and its high-falutin scientific jargon, and you get a story, characters, and dialogue of overwhelming banality, without even a "future" cast to them. Human beings, anthropoids, or robots, you could probably find them all, more or less like, that, in downtown Los Angeles today...

O dull new world! We are treated to a galactic civil war, assorted heroes and villains, a princely maiden in distress, a splendid old man surviving from an extinct order of knights who possessed a mysterious power called "the Force," and it is all as exciting as last year's weather reports.... Why, even the most exciting fight is an old-fashioned duel, for all that the swords have laser beams for blades....

Here it is all trite characterization and paltry verbiage.. The one exception is Alec Guinness as the grand old man Ben Kenobi (Ben for the Hebrew ben, to make him sound Biblical and good; Kenobi probably from cannibis, i.e., hashish, for reasons you can probably guess.)..

Still, Star Wars will do very nicely for those lucky enough to be children or unlucky enough never to have grown up.  UNQUOTE

John Simon, with New York Magazine - May 1977 - for his review of the original Star Wars film.

FYI - I know a ten year old boy back in 1977 that if he had read that would have said to Mr. Simon - I guess I never grow up then.  Just Sayin

Evidently a “few” people don’t like the look of the new Apple iPhone Battery Case - calling it the Quasimodo of iPhone cases.

Others launched meme’s that go - Apple makes iPhone 6 thinner - so it has less battery - then charges you $100 to get more battery life.  Brilliant

But here is something that is not getting much press - the new battery pack from Apple - is called the Smart Battery Case - and part of that smart part is the design - as it allows the signal to get in and out - better than other cases.

The reason for the hump in the case is that the battery is placed away from the antennas.  Thus unlike other cases where the battery runs the entire top to bottom and blocks signal in and out - thus meaning your device has to work harder to connect and communicate - with the smart Cases the signals get in and out with much less blockage and thus your device does not need to work as hard and use as much energy as those iPhones in the competitors cases - In Theory. And I say In theory - as I have not seen anyone actually test this yet.

But If you look at the iFixit tear down you will see the top and bottom of the cases is a microfiber mesh material - and the battery is again in the middle where it is not blocking the antennas of the iPhone 6 and 6S.

It should also be pointed out that Apple has added coupled passive antennas to further aid in maintaining good signal level.

Based on specs Apple is saying you will get more than double the battery life when you use the smart battery case.  Again this is JUST for the iPhone 6 and 6S - there is no version from apple for the 6+ and 6S+

Ironically - Apple who in the past has been beat up for making something look really pretty at the detriment of optimal performance - seems this time to turn things around and put optimal performance before Looks - and yes - they are of course getting smacked down for that.  Haters gotta hate I guess.

    Hi Rob,

I just got the new USB 3.0 speed Lightning to SD Reader adapter for the iPad Pro.

(he then sent pictures showing the two)

The lower one is the new one.  It has a longer body.

The bottom one is the new one.  The new none seems to have thicker sides

I have not tried it out it.  BTW, loving  the new iPad Pro.  Got the space gray 128GB wifi-only model.  The Photos app handles my 120,000 images (270GB) iCloud Photo Library.  I am in to birding/nature photography and burst mode can chew up a lot of space. :-)

    Regards,

    Steven (in Houston)

One thing to point out with the new USB 3 Lightning to SC card camera reader is that the USB 3 speeds are just for the iPad Pro - for other iOS devices it is USB 2 speeds - and by other iOS devices it means iOS devices running iOS 9.2 - as that is needed for iPhones to use this - but again just at USB 2 speeds.

Speaking of iOS 9.2 Here is some iOS 9.2 update feedback -

quote iOS 9.2 has made third-party keyboards a whole lot better. They open up without glitches. unquote  From Amiel Kennedy

Quote I've updated my 6s+ and Air 2 and so far haven't seen any issues. Yesterday I did have issues with my BlueAnt q3 audio being choppy but today seems to be fine. unquote - from Michael Polinske

quote I've upgraded 3 iPhones and 3 iPads of various ages without any problems. I did not perform any magic rituals, just pushed the upgrade button. BTW, I also upgraded 4 macs of various types and an Apple TV4 without any problems. unquote  From Craig B

quote I update an iPhone 6s Plus and iPad 2. No issues as yet. unquote Paul H

No issues from Eric S, Karthik M, and Chris S.

Really not seeing many reports out there overall about issues - almost none not NONE but almost none and much less than past single dot updates.

One report I saw was from someone that had been using a mic plugged into an iPhone and with iOS 9.2 - now they are getting an error message saying the device is not supported or draws too much power.  I tried out my iPhone 6+ running iOS 9.2 with my iRig Mic HD and also the ATR 2100 mic - and both worked fine - no issues at all.  So this issues does seem to be isolated - to maybe just specific mics - more news on that in a future episode.

If you were holding off updating until this episode to hear how things are going - I would say now is a good time to do that update - assuming you don’t plan to Jailbreak that is nor are using your iOS device with a USB mic that is something other than the ones I mentioned.

    the-apple-remote-with.html

Per the issue of not knowing which is the front of the Apple TV remote.  I saw a post on boing boing which made me go doooohhhh.

The simple solution to the problem comes out of goodfellas or some other mob movie or show.  And that is taking the Thick rubber band from a stalk of broccoli  - well ok this article said to use the purple one from Asparagus - but common - really - you know you are going to get the thick Green one from Broccoli like any good wise guy fan would do.  Then you just wrap the green or Purple or some other color rubber band around the bottom half of the Apple TV remote and now it is easier to tell which side is which.

And that is a brilliant DIY solution to the problem.

    case-for-the-apple-tvs-siri-remote-is-now-available

And here is another solution - which was sent in by many not is not D I Y but rather B U Y - let me read this email.

    Hey Rob,

Just saw this and thought I'd share it with you and the listeners. I think having this along with the remote strap should help with the orientation of the remote. I know you and some listeners have had issues regarding this already. I personally already have the wrist strap and have found it to be very useful in knowing  if I'm holding the remote correctly. I hope adding the case to the remote will add a little thickness to it since I feel that it's too thin and doesn't feel too natural in my hand. I really love and enjoy all the hard work that you do in providing us a community in which we can all share and help each other out when we need it. Please keep up the awesome work and I'll be looking forward to another knowledge packed episode.

    Kindest regards,

    Mike S. from Phoenix, AZ

And what Mike S and many other sent in was a link to the new Griffins Survivor play case fro Apple TV’s Siri remote - which will run you $20.  Which is a bit more then a stalk of Broccoli or Asparagus.  But is also a little nicer looking and will actually protect the remote when it goes flying across the room.

    http://www.macrumors.com/2015/12/08/best-

    buy-apple-watch-discount/

For those looking for an Apple Watch and looking for a good deal on one - Best Buy is offering $100 off all versions they have in stock between now and Christmas.  So yes the $349 38 mm sport version is now $249 at best buy.  This is better than their black Friday deal when it was just $50 off the sport models.  And this offer is available on line as well as in stores - and again is $100 of Sport and also the stainless steel version.

This is very un-usual that Apple would allow this.  It could mean Apple Watch sales are not what Apple was hoping for.  As apple does dictate what is allowed with regards to discounts.  This is not you get a $100 gift card - like was the case with Target - this is $100 off the price period.

If this is not about pumping up less then expected lower sales - maybe it is about the Apple Watch 2 coming early in the spring and Apple/Best Buy trying to clear inventory.

Maybe a combo of both.  Either way it is unusual - but if you held off and $249 or $299 is the deal you were looking for for an Apple watch sport - Best buy is the place for you.

    13:44

I want to talk about today’s sponsor - Harrys dot com.

And folks with the Holiday’s upon us - Harry’s makes a great gift.  It is much much more considerate than a gift card.  Harry’s recently sent me the Winter Winston Gift set with Travel Kit - it has a great Travel bag, A beautiful cooper Razor handle, 3 blades and foaming Shave Gel - This is a really nice set and that you can also add in custom engraving.  I really like the look and feel of the cooper Razor and the travel bag is great quality - which I was able to test out on my Trip to DC.  Felt good knowing my Travel bag looked good when the maid came in plus it had a little more room then my old travel shave bag - so everything I needed fit in nicely. Not too small not to big - just right.

Harry’s has many other kits as well - with the Truman Set starting at $15 - which makes a nice gift for the company office pool or for a stocking stuffer.

And the best part they all use the great harry’s blades that come from their factory in Germany - after all a great looking razor means nothing if it does not give a great shave - and Harry’s definitely gives a great shave.  And harry’s is able to ensure that great shave by buying the factory that their blades are made at.  We are not talking about blades that feel like they cost a buck - we are talking the highest quality blades - but at a really reasonable price.

As I have said before I am 100% a full fledged Harry’s customer - I have enough blades now to get me through 2016 and then some.

Thanks to my Wife and boys.  They know I love harrys and I know you will as will whom ever is lucky enough to get a razor from you this holiday season.

Go to Harrys.com right now.  As a special offer to you, Harry’s will give you $5 off your first order with promo code tii .  Don’t wait!  Economy shipping for the Holidays ends on December 18th, so ACT NOW.  That’s H-A-R-R-Y-S dot com. and Enter promo code tii.  Make every morning they shave feel like a Holiday.

    VOICEMAIL - Jeff_CT_appleTV_remote_update

Hi Rob, in episode 374 a caller was asking how to get feedback to Apple, and this link http://www.apple.com/feedback/ can be used as this was the link that I used to ask Apple To get Apple Pay with my bank and the page I used said they read all emails but can't reply to all emails but they read all emails carefully. I'm not saying this will work for all but it seemed to work for me.

    Regards,

    Aaron in Vermont.

    Rob

I learned something new today and am sharing just in the spirit of the Tii community.

My iPhone6 screen had cracked and I made an appointment with the Genius Bar to have a tech replace it. No AppleCare or other coverage so I would owe $105 for the work. Not a problem for me since I've skipped coverage for past 8 years and over 8 different devices - so I'm ahead by many $$$.

But let's fast forward to the new thing I learned. When they took the phone I had to log out of my Apple ID - and because they replaced the broken screen that includes the home button, I also lost my Touch ID. So when I wanted to pay the repair charge with ApplePay, I had no way to do it on the phone.

The Apple rep said, "hey try your AppleWatch".  I thought it wouldn't work - I believed the watch was just a slave to the phone. But voilà - it worked and paid for my repair.

Maybe you told us earlier but I missed this capability. I wasn't even logged into my AppleID on the phone and my AMEX had been disassociated from the phone when I turned off it off before the repair.

Also from the Google Plus community was this feedback to Ep 375:

From Myron Uecker quote ou talked about the hoops you had to jump through to get your Remote app working with your ATV4. Yesterday I simply opened the Remote app after updating my ATV and it just worked.

I'm looking forward to getting home tonight to find out if today's update to the Remote app made it work better.  unquote

When I released ep 375 - Apple had not updated the remote app yet. It was released on the 9th early in the day.  So it looks like the updated remote app will be easier to set up - Sadly The remote app Works the same with the new version as the last version - in that it does not work with games.    But still works fine for Netflix / HBO / Youtube  and searching for apps - which is what I need it for.  per entering in text.

But definitely if you have the remote app installed - make sure you have updated to the latest version.

Hey does anyone know where I can find a list of services that don't count against my T-Mobile bandwidth cap? I know I of the music and video services that are now not counted and I also know the app store still runs high speed even after you pass your limit but I'd love to know of any that I didn't hear about through podcast side chat.

    From Cody K

To which Kenneth B - provided the link to the t-mobile page - which I will have a link to in the show notes for ep 376 - look for the link titled - Binge on Streaming Video List.

And here is a quick run down on the services you can stream content via T-mobile and not have it count against your data cap:

Crackle, DirecTV, Encore, ESPN, Flurry, Fox Sports, Fox Sports GO, Go90, HBO GO, HBO NOW, Hulu, IG-2000, Major League Baseball, Movieplex, NBC Sports, Netflix, Showtime, Slave1, Sling Box, Sling TV, Starz, T-Mobile TV, Univision Deportes, Ustream, Vessel, Vevo and VUDU

    tvs-app-store-is-bursting-at-the-seams-with-growth

Thanks to Michael for the heads up on this next one.

There is a nice article over at AppAdvice titled - Apple TV’s App store is bursting at the seams with growth.

I will say this in perspective to iOS and iPad apps - the numbers are anemic - but for the Apple TV - it is pretty good already. There are over 2,600 apps now - with projection of 5,000 within a month and 10,000 in early 2016.

Games apps are the biggest category by far with 38% of the Apps.  Entertainment is number two - followed by Education.   The least popular categories in terms of number of apps - are Finance, Medical, Navigation, Shopping and Catalogs.   Why the heck is Navigation even a category on a set top box device?

Since there are no ads in Apple TV Apps - as you might expect - more apps are for sale.  The fact the % is just 39% was actually surprising - I would have thought the number would be higher.  Of course there are a bunch that are freemium - and they go under free - then you have in app purchases to get say better looking fireplaces.

Here is some feedback on the Apple TV from the email bag

    Hi Rob

I got my Apple TV 64gb. Well first it came a few days early then expected. It could of not been any easier to set up. I just put my iPhone next to it and most of the set up was taken care of. Then I had to put my password for iTunes account. After that I set up Apple Music. Then I put on a few games as well as Flickr YouTube and my go to apps for movies and tv. Netflix, HBO go and showtime any time. I tried out some games. Most games I got were on par graphically with the Wii. Some games were so so. The others were great. To my kids so far they like the games they played. So that is the main test. I will let you know more once I set up all my apps and give the kids time to play the games. I am just happy it came in time for Hanukkah. I also want to gloat about my 25% off I got. That makes it a better system then it already was. Thanks once again for the show.

    Regards,

    Aaron from Brooklyn.

Well Aaron - thanks for the feedback and Happy Hanukkah.

    apple-said-to-suspend-effort-to-develop-live-tv-service

This next one goes under the rumor category - but sadly the rumor category on what is not coming rather than what is.

Bloomberg is saying according to their sources Apple’s plans to roll out its own TV subscription offering are now dead in the water - as Apple just was not able to come to agreement with the TV content creators.

Apple had long been rumored to be working on a $30 to $40 a month subscription service to TV Content.  Now it seems Apple is shelving or pausing or putting off for a while those efforts and instead will focus on making Apple TV the platform when individual content creators or networks can sell directly their content.  IE - HBO Now.   CBS CEO Les Moonves - not to be confused with More Moondog.  - Well Les - he said last week that Apple has put it TV Plans on hold.

Rumors has it some big egos wanted to much money - and that is what is putting the kibosh on Apples plans for now.

I think this can be summed up like this - Apple was trying to offer a better value offering to end users - but the content creators were asking for more money from Apple then from Cable providers - this kinds killing that whole value prop for the end user angle.

Moons says he does expect Apple to eventually roll out that service - but did not say that was going to be before or after the Ice Skates were placed on El Deablo

    26:27

I had asked for feedback on what folks want to see for an iPhone 7.

From Larry D - in the google + community he said:

    quote

Here is what I would like to see in the iPhone 7:

    1) iPad Pro style external connectors that can be used to charge the phone via a case or other external devise. This would, for one, eliminate the need to add another quarter inch to the phone size when you add a charging case.

    2) illuminated Apple logo on the back of the phone or an illuminated ring on the Touch ID ring to indicate status.

    3) Waterproofing

    4) Sapphire glass option if not as part of the base product.

    unquote

I really like the idea of the side connectors like with the iPad Pro - where if you have a case it could provide power that way rather then having to go through the lightning connector.

Per Waterproofing - I do think there is a good chance for that - as the 6S and 6S+ have taken a step in that direction with the new internal connectors with essentially gaskets around them.  So the 6S and 6S+ are already more waterproof than any previous iPhones.

Per an illuminate Apple Logo - It is something I have been hoping for for years - but never really ever expecting.  It is one of those things that would be neat - but never will happen due to size and power issues.

And sapphire screens - it will forever be one of those things you will see in rumors - because Apple spent a lot of time and effort to get it in the past and completely caused the bankruptcy of a company over.  Where part of the settlement was the selling of all those furnaces - not scrapping of them - but selling of them - so they were purchased by someone - and that is why the rumor of Sapphire screens will be back every year from now until it finally happens - if it happens.  I will say this - don’t hold off buying an iPhone for it - as it could be a rumor associated with the iPhone 17 - not just the iPhone 7.

    28:51

    http://www.appy-geek.com/Web/ArticleWeb.aspx?regionid=4&articleid=53895609

It is being rumored the next Sammy Galaxy S7 will have pressure sensitive screen - OF COURSE IT WILL.  For anyone that has ever doubted Sammy’s road map for the Galaxy line is located at apple.com - this is just another example why all those doubts should be removed.

This would of course be a sammy attempt to clone Apples 3D touch.  So I am going to guess they will just call it - touch 3D - just saying

    http://qz.com/572239/apples-not-as-secure-as-it-

    used-to-be-but-its-still-way-better-than-windows-and-android/

Interesting Article from Quartz titled - Apple’s not as secure as it used to be - but its still way better than windows and Android.

I will skip the OS Ten parts and get right to iOS - Symantec in 2015 to date has found over double the number of new threats for iOS vs 2014 - which sounds dire until you realize the number of new threats in 2015 was 7.  By comparison Symantec logged 9,839 cumulative Android malware threats in 2014 - which they said in 2014 17% of Android Apps were Malware in disguise.

By the way - of the 13 iOS Threats all time - 9 can only infect Jailbroken devices.

So long of the short - No it is not as secure as it used to be - but compared to Android - it is still fort knox - rather than knock on wood.

    30:18

I wear glasses - all the time - essentially I put them on when I get out of bed and don’t take them off until I go back to bed or take a shower.  And if you google me for any pictures from the past 3 plus years - one thing will be constant in all those pictures - I am wearing my Warby Parker glasses. I love those glasses and I loved the experience buying the glasses.

And I would like to welcome Warby Parker back as a  sponsor.   If you wear glasses like me you know what a pain it is to get new glasses and how expensive it is - Eye glasses should not cost more than an iPhone not even a subsidized 16 GB iPhone. But sadly most do Especially after the eyeglass store put on all their adders.  But Warby Parker is not like that.  First on the price side for prescription Glasses they are $95 or you can go titanium for $145.  And that includes the anti-reflective and anti-glare coating.  and a very nice case.  No up sells.  And these are very nice very fashionable glasses. And at this price - you can afford to get a few pairs - just to accessorize for different looks if you want.

How the process works is you go to warbyparker dot com slash tii and you pick out 5 pairs of glasses you want to try on Or as they call it their Home Try on - and they ship the 5 pair out to you at no cost.  You try them on for a few days and pick out the pair you like best and send them all back - shipping is covered both ways.  Then once you pick the pair you like best you go online enter your prescription or scan in your prescription or even just give them the name and number to your eye doctor and they will call them - they make that part easy -  and then you place the order.   And that is it.  It really was an easy process. My Warby Parker glasses are my day in day out glasses - So they are not just an advertiser they are who I got my primary pair of glasses from.  You can see them on me in my picture on the banner for Warby parker up at today in iOS dot com or the Harry’s banner for that matter or again in any picture I have been in for the past 3 plus years.

Go right now on your iOS device to WarbyParker dot com slash tii and pick your 5 pairs and get them sent to you to try on at no cost to you.  But lets say after you try on the 5 pairs you and your significant other can't agree on THE pair - simple send them back and pick out another 5 pairs and repeat

    - still at no cost for the try ons.  They have a lot of great styles and the site is really easy to see the different styles and colors.

And when you buy a pair of glasses with Warby Parker here is the absolute best part - they give a pair to a 3rd world charity.  So in summary.  You shop hassle free and get 5 days to try on your 5 pairs at your home to pick the ones you really like best - you pay 1/3rd to 1/5th what you normally pay for glasses and by buying a pair you are helping out someone in a 3rd world country to get a pair of glasses as well.  Win Win and Win.  Again remember to start the free home try on process go to warby parker dot com slash tii.   Thanks Warby Parker for sponsoring this show and for making the best glasses I have ever owned.

Hi Thomas - first thanks for the heads up on the Transit map crashing when you try to print.  I did a search in the map for directions from Fishermans warf to the Moscone center - and it will show the preview to print fine for Driving and walking directions - but for Transit when it is trying to show the preview for print it crashes the app - same if in new york city for directions from the Empire State building to the Museum of Modern Art - no issues with driving or walking directions - but transit directions crash the app.  So looks like Apple has a bug to fix.

Per the questions of printing multiple emails from the same person or in a thread at once - I am not aware of anyway to do that from an iOS device - but if someone listening knows how to do this with the Native Mail app in iOS - please let us know - and if you know how to do this with another mail app for iOS - let us know that as well - 206-666-6364 - thats 206-moon-dog - or record and email in the response to today in iOS at gmail dot com

And Folks also throwing out the third part of that email - if anyone has the Logitech keyboard for iPad Pro is there a way to start voice recognition from it.

    Hi Rob,

There is an issue with the ThingCharger - indiegogo project, they have providing them to Sam's Clubs before shipping the units to most or even all of the backers 1st.

I pledged for the Lighting version not the USB-C version and I haven't even gotten mine yet and I see them for sale in a local Sam's Club, not cool!

This is just turning me off on funding any projects anymore and I am sure there are many other backers that feel the same.

Maybe they need to just give us Sam's Club gift cards with the amount we pledged so we can get them before Christmas.

    Regards,

    Thomas

    Tuscaloosa AL

And Thomas sent a picture of the Thing Charger from his local Sam’s club.  Thomas I agree - when a crowd funded project turns around and ships product to big box retailers before providing product to those that took a chance with them - it definitely hurts crowd funding campaigns in the future.  Take the SOS charger - more people were able to purchase them from online stores and retailers then were shipped them that funded the project - I never received mine.

I understand why they do it - though - basically they run out of money and are looking at the sale of the product to a big box store as a loan - but really what they are doing is selling the same product twice.  Once to the individual that crowd funded it - and made it possible to get it built and then again to the retailer - and I agree that just is not kosher and bad for all involved.   Most of the reason this happens is bad planning or unforeseen complications which again would be bad planning.  But you can’t let a few bad apples ruin the whole bunch - because this is not a wide spread issue and I only know a handful of cases where this happened.  So hopefully you will give some other start up / crowd funded project your backing in the future.

    http://www.bumpies.co/

The folks at Bumpies sent me a set of Bumpies to review.

I have been testing out the Bumpies for my iPhone 6+ the past week plus - and I feel naked in a good way.  I had a big ol hunking protective case on my 6+ for over a year.  And with the bumpies I feel like I am almost totally naked now - well I mean my phone is naked - it is kind of like have a fig leaf for my iPhone.  Just the parts you need protected are protected.  For those that don’t remember me talking about the bumpies in the past - they go on each corner of your iPhone and then protrude above the screen and below the back so no mater how your drop it the screen does not touch the ground and the back does not touch and the sides to not touch - just the bumpies touch.  And again they just cover the corners.

It comes with a wipe to clean the corners and then a little sleeve to place the iPhone in for proper placement - which was much easier then I thought it would be.

I did also keep on my glass screen protector - because you never know when something will be dropped on your iPhone screen. I highly recommend using a screen protector with the Bumpies.

With the bumpies and glass protector I am getting the same protection as my big ol hunking case - except now it fits in the cup holder and my pocket much better.

It is really nice to actually feel my iPhone again but at the same time have it protected.  It really is weird in a good way to feel the back of my iPhone and the quality of my iPhone I forgot how good it feels in your hand.  And now I am able to show off how pretty the 6+ is again - as just a minimal amount of the phone covered and since I went with the white ones at first glance it looks completely naked.

They have bumpies for all versions of the iPhone back to the 4.  And for the 6+ at least they run just $35.

Link in the show notes - and thanks to Bumpies for sending these over to review.

    Hi Rob,

Just listening to episode 375  one thing I was hoping the Apple watch update would fix my springboard problem on my Apple watch. I hadn't had any problems with it since I got it on launch date earlier in the year but in the last 2-3 wks it seems to randomly crash reboot and back to work. Sometimes even while I'm doing a work out it does this and resumes recording my work out without missing a beat. Kinda funny. Just wanted to put this out there and see if you or any of the listeners have had a similar experience or even better, found a fix.

    Pls let me know.

    Regards,

    Hey Rob,

So just wondering if anyone else noticed that after downloading 9.2 on my iPhone 5C, it took about 30 of my 70 songs I bought from iTunes and took them out of the cloud and downloaded back onto my device. Also what I miss is the little cloud symbol clearly showing if a song is in the cloud or not and yes I am aware of the 3 red dots and seeing this way by clicking on the song itself if it is or not but I miss the old system.

Also my friend has a 5S and he gets the little "mobile device" symbol on a song and my 5C does not, which I find odd.

    Regards.

    http://cydiajailbreak.org/pangu-9-status-for-

    pangu-ios-9-2-jailbreak/

There are a bunch of rumors swirling about an iOS 9.2 Jailbreak coming soon - but at this point on December 14th - there is no released jailbreak for iOS 9.2 - there are some scams claiming to do it - just send them money - that is always the case after a new update - but so far from Pangu team and other jailbreak teams - there is no official word of a working jailbreak for 9.2 GM that is ready for end users.  So again if you are jailbroken - do not upgrade at this point - if you plan to jailbreak don’t upgrade - everyone else - go for it.

    Hi Rob,

One of the greatest things about the iPhone is the ability to e-mail video attachments. Up until the latest ios update 9.2, I could always compress and e-mail video attachments. Now after the update, I only get the option to use Mail Drop or "try to send the attachment." I don't even see the mail app try to compress the video file, rendering this function as useless. Not everyone wants to use Mail Drop or iCloud or send links to their videos which reside in Dropbox, etc; some of us just want to attach a simple video file to an e-mail.

So I'm pretty unhappy about this latest update since this is a basic vital function that I need to do for both work and personal reasons. And I don't want to have to switch back to Android because of this.

I'd appreciate any help you or your audience can give me.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Brent from Chicago

    Hi Rob,

Per ep 375 - I am one of the users who is waiting for the 4 inch screen iPhone as well. it would be awesome to add 3D Touch to the 4inch phone, but if it doesn't get added, it means that Apple is not yet ready to fully support 3D touch on the iDevices.

While the maps app as well as the podcast app are the most popular on iOS, You're right it doesn't make them better even though they are more popular. For one you can't share a point in a podcast like I have shared below at your most amusing comment from your show. Thanks again for everything you do Rob.

    day-brings-ugprades-to-os-x-ios-watchos-and-tvos/

Ok - wow - Apple saved my bacon on this episode.  I mean it was a really really a slow news week before Apple released iOS 9.2.  Thanks Apple.

Yes - iOS 9.2 is available now - as always if you don’t like when things go wrong - wait until after Ep 376 is out to upgrade - as by then we will have more feedback on iOS 9.2.

If you are a blow ahead type of person - then make sure you backup and sync prior to updating.

But either way - lets go over what iOS 9.2 gets you and by you I mean some of you - as some new features are only for specific devices.

First off Apple highlights the following

Apple Music Improvements for making playlists, saving songs offline and browsing classical music

A new top stories section in news so you can stay up to date with the most important news of the day - like the iOS 9.2 update

And mail drop in mail for sending large attachments.

Those are the three key points highlighted in the update on my iPhone 6+ on the main page of settings showing the update.  once you start then Apple talks about the update containing many Improvements and bug fixes.

    Which include the following:

In Apple music now includes Seeing which songs have been downloaded with the new download indicator next to each song in my music and playlists

New Top stories in the news app is available in the US, UK and Australia

iBooks now supports 3D touch to peek and pop pages from the table of contents, your notes and bookmarks, or from each results inside a book.

iBooks now supports listening to an audiobook while your browser your library.

iPhone support for the USB camera Adapter to import photos and videos - that is nice.

    Improved stability for Safari.

And Improved stability for Podcasts app - but could it really get worse?.  Podcasts App is still v2.3 - but the build number did increase slightly on my iPhone 6+ it went from 1075.33 to 1075.88  - lets see if this stops it from crashing right after subscribing to new podcasts.

9.2 fixes an issue that caused mail attachments to be inaccessible for some users with Pop Mail.

9.2 Address an issue that could cause search in contacts to display no results.

It Fixed an issue where camera screen on iPad could be black when attempting to capture video.

It Fixed an issue that could prevent wallet updates and lock screen alerts from displaying

9.2 Addresses an issue where updating iOS could prevent an alarm from going - off - Ut oh - hope that is fixed - don’t want to miss the Elf on the shelf tonight.

9.2 Siri support for Arabic - Saudi Arabia and UAE.

There is AT&T Number Sync Support

And with Safari there is View Controller improvements - these last three were talked about when we talked about the betas in the past for iOS 9.2 - so nothing new with them - just confirmation they made it forward to Gold master.

And as with most Single dot updates - there were Accessibility improvements and with iOS 9.2 the Accessibility improvements include:

-fixing issues with voice over when using camera face detection

-adding support for voiceover to wake up the screen

-adding support for voiceover to invoke app switcher with 3D touch gesture

-Fixing an issues with guided access when trying to end phone calls

-improved functionality for switch control users when using 3D touch

-fixing an issue with speech rate of speak screen

Plus there were a bunch of other bug fixes I did not mention - just tried to go over the ones you have written or called in about in the past.

So far so good - but it has only been a few hours at the new version.  Again if you don’t like when things go wrong - wait until up 376 to hear if there are any issues.  For those that do upgrade - let us know if there are any issues - 206-666-6364 that’s 206-moon-dog or send an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com

And in addition to iOS 9.2 being released for iOS device - tvOS 9.1 was released for the Apple TV 4th gen - and the biggest update - is the remote app works - sorta.  First make sure you have the remote app on your iOS device and open it and add a device - and you will get a four digit code to enter.

Then go to Settings on your updated to 9.1 Apple TV - and go to remotes and devices and then select Remote App and then under pairable devices you should see your iOS app - select it and enter the 4 digit code and it will be paired to your Apple TV - and you will be able to use it now to enter text in search fields.  You will be able to use it to move through the different apps - but you will not or at least I was not able to use it to play any games.  It did seem to work fine in Youtube and netflix - but not with games.  Still working where you can enter text is what It was desperately needing.

Finally Watch OS 2.1 was released as well  And it brings more languages - Arabic, Bothan, Czech, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian,  Malay, Portuguese  and Vietnamese.  Additionally there is now support for right to left user interface and a new complication for islamic and Hebrew Calendars.  And bugs man - squashing bugs man.

So busy busy day and on top of that there was an update to El Capitan 10.11.2.  But I will not go over that.

Just safe to say - I can’t remember a day where Apple did 4 major OS updates.

    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/11/apple-sneaks-a-usb-

    3-0-compatible-lightning-port-into-the-ipad-pro/

As I said 9.2 broke up a slow news week - How slow was it - you ask - Well to explain how slow of a news cycle this past week was for the iOS world the best way is to go with the title of what was going to be this first article

Quote Apple sneaks a USB 3.0-compatible Lightning port into the iPad Pro  unquote

So yes - the lead story was going to be about Apple making the iPad Pro’s port compatible to USB 3.0.  Seems the folks at iFixit found the USB 3.0 controller in there and Apple has since confirmed that yes indeed it is compatible to USB 3.0 - right now there is not a Lightening to USB 3.0 cable available for Apple - right now that is - but at some point in the near future there should be.

FYI USB 3.0 allows for data transfer rates up to 5 GBPS - theoretically - vs just 480 MBPS for USB 2.0

I am sure we will have a follow up on this in future - but as was pointed out in a couple of articles about this - where it comes into play is when you are trying to transfer 4K video files or other large media files.

    13:01

    http://www.craxworld.com/apple-made-to-pay-1800-after-

    data-loss-during-iphone-repair/

Continuing with the slow news week theme - we have this next one titled - Apple made to pay $1,800 after data loss during iPhone repair.

Essentially a 68 year old gentlemen named Mr White brought in his iPhone 5 to have it worked on.  And during the process of working on it the Apple employee wiped it out - deleting his Honeymoon photos and quote 15 years worth of contacts unquote

Clearly Mr White was also a time traveler - which explains how he picked up the 12 extra years of contacts.

Mr. White I would like to introduce you to Mr Backup.  Mr. Backup - is not new to these parts - actually he goes back to iOS 1.0  - Now if you don’t have a computer there is iCloud.  But you should be and need to be backing up your photos to your Computer or iCloud on a regular basis and definitely 100% need to do it before bringing it anywhere to be repaired.

Mr White did initially ask for over $8,000 - but then said he would settle for about $1,500 - but Apple said no way - and then the court said - yup you should have settled - now pay $1,800 plus another $1,000 for court costs - have a nice day.

What does this mean for you and I - essentially Apple will be getting you to sign a waiver most likely when you bring in an iOS device for repair stating you understand the device could get wiped out and have you confirm it is backed up.

Obviously something Mr. White should have done.  Once again the courts showing that ignorance is bliss and often rewarded.

    http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2015/12/03Apple-Releases-

    Swift-as-Open-Source.html

A little press release from Apple last week.

    quote

Apple® today announced that its Swift™ programming language is now open source. As an open source language, the broad community of talented developers — from app developers to educational institutions to enterprises — can contribute to new Swift features and optimizations and help bring Swift to new computing platforms. Introduced in 2014, Swift is the fastest growing programming language in history and combines the performance and efficiency of compiled languages with the simplicity and interactivity of popular scripting languages.* Apple today also launched the Swift.org website with detailed information about Swift open source, including technical documentation, community resources and links to download the Swift source code.

“By making Swift open source the entire developer community can contribute to the programming language and help bring it to even more platforms,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “Swift’s power and ease of use will inspire a new generation to get into coding, and with today’s announcement they’ll be able to take their ideas anywhere, from mobile devices to the cloud.”

    unquote

Why this is good news is simply that apple said they were going to do what they just did - make Swift Open source and thus make sure it can be maintained and supported by the community.  This gives developers the confidence to go all in with swift and that Apple can’t kill it if they wanted.

overall I am hearing and reading very positive press about this step.

This next one is from Dr. John - and it talks about the iOS 9 adoption rate is now at 70% - based on App store usage numbers.

iOS 8 is at 22% and everything earlier is at 8%.

So you have iOS 9 at 70% adoption.

for curiosity sake I looked at Android Marsh mallow - that was released right around when iOS 9 was - well about two weeks after.  But pretty close.  As of December 1st it had a 0.3% adoption rate.  70% vs 0.3% hmmm - one is better than the other.  Heck Lollipop which was released more than a year ago is only at 25.6%.

Which one do you want to develop for? Just sayin.

Apple TV 4th Gen, iPAd Pro, iPad Air, iPad mini - all devices enjoyed from your bed.  Add in Netflix and Amazon Prime - and well that 1/3 rd of your life in bed goes to 2/5th.

And if you are going to be spending more time in bed would it not make sense to get the best bed possible?  And that is what today’s sponsor Casper offers up.  The best bed at a great price.

Or as they say an obsessively engineered mattress at a shockingly fair price.

With Casper you get a 100 day risk free trial period.  You don't like it you get your money back and they come and pick it back up and donate it to a charity.  That said - the mattress they sent was great and was definitely not going back.

Casper Mattresses are a mix of Latex foam and Memory foam. No noisy springs to wake up your kid or significant other when you get up to sneak to take of that Elf on the Shelf reminder you have for 10:15. Shhh don’t tell the kids

But just as important as quality is Pricing and the pricing is really great.   Twin Mattresses are just $500, they also have Twin XL for $600, Full for $750, Queen for $850 and then King and Cal King - for  $950.  That is less much much less than my iPad Pro setup.  And as I said you have 100 days to return it risk free. And if you go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code tii - you will save $50 off those prices -   Terms and Conditions Apply.

This is an american made mattress with delivery right now for the US and Canada only and it is free delivery. And When said mattress is delivered - it is from UPS - in a squarish box that you think no way is there a mattress in there - But you get a cool little tool to cut open the package and the mattress opens up and expands to form.  It is really cool Just google Casper Mattress unboxing.

With all the apple devices working so well in bed - you know you are going to spend more than a 1/3 rd of your life in bed is it not worth getting the best nights sleep possible - and that is what you will get with Casper or what your kids will get.  Again to Save $50 off of the prices I mentioned go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code t i i - all lower case on the promo code.  again casper dot com / tii - promo code tii to save $50 - thanks Casper for the great mattress for my son and for sponsoring this show.

It would up a hard reset fixed the issue.  But I have seen this from others - and doing the force quit all apps - and resent network settings seems to fix the issue for any that reported the issue.  The podcasts app sometimes gets stuck it seems and it needs a swift kick in the pants to getting it un stuck with regards to downloads.

If you are chrome app user here is a awesome feature that's now made possible thanks to Apples new 3D Touch.

So, as you know with 3D Touch and the home screen you can 3D Touch on a app icon and you will get a list of options you can choose or you will get haptic feed back telling you there's no built in feature for 3D Touch in that app currently. Well Google just updated there chrome app with 3 new goodies, those goodies being New tab, New incognito* Tab and voice search. Well the voice search tab gives you a stream lined option to use ok google kind of like how you use Siri.

    How does it work?

Well you force touch on the chrome app and then choose the voice search feature, then speak your mine. Ask questions, driving directions, game show questions and more. In most instances you will get voice feed back, just like when you ask Siri a question.

    What's the real benefit here?

A modified Ok Google on your iPhone.

Check it out and tell me what you think about it here in my post.

    http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MGQM2LL/A/iphone-

    6s-smart-battery-case-white?fnode=9e

Apple quietly released a new iPhone 6S and 6 Battery back case.

And by quietly that means - there was no press release and by 6S and 6 we mean just the 6S and 6 - there is not one for the 6+ and 6S+.  Guess apple figures the battery life is already fine for 6+ and 6S+

Pricing for the new quote iPhone 6S Smart Batter Case unquote is $99.  It comes in White or Black or White or Black.  The top seems to be flexible and you fold it back and slip your iPhone into it.  and then fold the top back over to secure your iPhone.  It does appear to have a lightening port on the bottom.

Apple claims it gives you up to 25 hours of increased talk time, 18 hours more of internet use on LTE, and up to 20 hours more video playback.

Apple also says in the description that the charge of the case is shown in the Notification center and on the lock screen.

Availability starts December 10th at stores and December 11th at your door.

Hey looking to buy someone you love a christmas gift with an Apple logo - and they have an iPhone 6 or 6S - then this might be the gift you were looking for.

Ok - so this next one was definitely make the rounds.  I did not see any improvement doing it - but here goes - the basic line is you can quickly reset the ram on your iOS device to do so -

    1. unlock your device.

    2. Press and hold the power button

    3. When you see the slide to power off - release the power button.

    4. Press and hold the home button.

    5. When it bumps you back to the home screen release and you are done.

At that point the ram should be reset.  Some people claim it helps - most I have read say they did not see any change.

    http://appadvice.com/appnn/2015/12/apple-maps-takes-

    the-lead-over-google-maps-on-ios

To forgive and forget - the basis for any solid relation ship.  I mean ideally there would be nothing to forgive nor forget - but in reality there is always something.  For example take Apple Maps back in the fall of 2012.  Well it seems we have moved on to a new phase with our iOS relations ship and have forgiven and forgot.  As Apple Maps is now used more widely than Google Maps on iPhone - this according to an Associated Press report.

Actually apple is saying it is used more than 3 times more often than its next closet competitor on the iPhone and iPad.

I have to admit I can’t remember the last time I used a mapping App on my iOS device that was  not Apples. It is just easier and with the Apple Watch integration it is just better overall experience especially when driving.

Obviously Apple Maps being native and what is brought up by Siri is why most users use it - after all - Apple Maps does not even need to be better then google maps - it just needs to be good enough to keep the majority of folks looking for a 3rd party app.

Just like with the Podcasts App - it just needs to be good enough - and despite what many say - it is that - as on the mobile side - it completely dominates on iOS - everything else combined and doubled and doubled again does not add up to the Podcasts App on iOS.

So really not shocking news that Apples Maps app and iOS users have made up and moved from past issues.

    http://techcrunch.com/2015/12/08/mozilla-launches-

    content-blocker-for-safari-on-ios-9/

Actually some late breaking news - Mozilla launches a content blocker for Safari for iOS 9.

It is called - Focus by Firefox - and it is FREE as is zip - nada - no cost to you.  And it is based on the Disconnect Block list.  But unlike some other content blockers that just block ads - this one blocks Ads, Analytics, and social media trackers - the stuff that bloat and slow down your surfing experience.

From Mozilla per web users quote too many users today have lost trust and lack meaningful controls over their digital lives unquote

To see how well this works - first if you have a content blocker already - go to Settings - then safari - and then Content Blocker - and turn them off.

Next go to imore.com - and wait the 10 to 15 seconds for it to load and scroll down and see all the pop overs and other items.

Then go to another site - then force quit safari.

Next go to the App store app and search for

Focus by firefox  - and install it.  Again it is FREE.  I like free.

Then open it - and then launch Settings again go to Safari and content blockers and Turn on Focus

Then launch safari and go to imore.com and watch it load is less than a second.  It really did a great job of speeding up the load time of iMore and other sites bloated with tracking and intrusive ads.

Again don’t mean to pick on iMore - but it really is one of the worst offenders out there.  Sorry Rene it is what it is.

But luckily - Focus is here and it helps bring focus back to your browsing experience - and playing around with it today - I was pretty impressed.  I will play more with it this week and see if I find any gotcha’s but so far so good.

    iphone-will-have-a9-cpu-apple-pay-launching-in-

    early-2016-insider-says

We are now starting to get into spaghetti rumor season - that is where people start throwing a whole bunch of rumors up against the wall and see what sticks.

One of those that seems to have stuck this past week is from Ming-Chi Kuo - who is saying in early 2016 - there will be a new iPhone - iPhone 6C - essentially - which will be a 4 Inch iPhone with an A9 Processor and Apple Pay.

It will come in multiple colors - but this will be a metal back not plastic.

Ming is saying - You pitiful fool - my life is not for any earthing to give or take.  Oh wait wrong ming - sorry .  Ming Chi is saying the early launch would be in the March - April time frame and would help offset what would be a traditionally slowing iPhone sales cycle

This makes sense when you realize there has not been a truly new 4 inch iPhone sine the 5S.  So a lot of people with 4 inchers like my wife.  that don’t want something bigger than 4 inches.  wow that sound all kind of wrong.  Anyway - there are those that like the smaller iPhones and have not upgraded and Apple has not address that part of their market.  And they are sitting there over their 2 year upgrade window and could upgrade on the cheap right now.

So yes - I can see why this one is sticking - it make sense.

One thing Ming Chi does not expect is force touch on the iPhone 6C.  So really it would be kind of a hybrid spec wise between the 6S and 6.  But the size of the 5S and in a new case design.  But the camera from the iPhone 6 - not the 6S.  Again a mix of some iPhone 6 specs - and some 6S specs.

Will be interesting to see when some leaked photos emerge - because for something that is just 4 to 5 months away - photos should be hitting the wire in 3, 2, ..

    http://www.gforgames.com/gadgets/iphone-7-5-

    different-prototypes-50668/

Out of China is a rumor that Apple is experimenting / testing at least 5 different configurations of the iPhone 7. Each one with its own unique hardware characteristics.  Which does not sound all that unbelievable - would not be surprised if they were testing may times that number of configurations.

Reportedly some of the tech in some of the prototypes includes a USB Type C connector.  There is also wireless charging tech, Multi-force touch,  Dual cameras,  fingerprint recognition built into the screen - which I would assume means no home button.

There is also rumors of an Amoled screen for one version - plus a partridge in a pair tree.

Of course the rumor ends with They don’t know which techs / options Apple is going to go with.  So really this rumor could be summed up - Apple is trying things and no decisions have been made but hey an iPhone 7 is coming -  Think!!

    38:15

    http://www.smartgadgetreviews.com/smartphones/iphone-

    7-could-dry-itself/

One other rumor about iPhone 7 possible specs - is the iPhone could dry itself.  No not reach over after it gets out of the shower and actually picks a towel for itself rather than yelling I am cold I am cold and forcing you to run down the hall to reach over and get the towel the iPhone could get on its own if it just reached over and grabbed it.  And by iPhone I am not talking about spoiled child with a strong will or anything like that.

No what we are talking about here is a rumor based on a patent apple submitted.  Essentially it would pump the water out of the iphone via the speaker.

From the patent quote The embodiments described herein are directed to an acoustic module that is configured to remove all or a portion of a liquid that has accumulated within a cavity of the acoustic modules,”  unquote

But as you know if you have listened for a while - a Patent from Apple does not usually lead to actual real world application and if said patent becomes public and that feature is not already in place - the chances are slim of it ever being used.  At least again when you look at past history.

I am not going to talk about the ditching of the headphone jack on this episode as one of the iPhone 7 rumors - because we talked about it on the last ep - ep 374 - so you can go back and listen to it around the 25 Minute mark to get my thoughts on an iPhone without a headphone jack.

Speaking of the iPhone 7 - one of the worst articles I read was - iPhone 7 - should you buy the iPhone 6S this Christmas or wait for the iPhone 7.  Ummmm - Really - it is just December.  That is not a question you ask yet -  Talk to me end of June / July time frame - then maybe you hold off - but not now.  If you need a new phone - get it now.  Don’t wait until the end of September for the iPhone 7 - that is silly.

    full-control-of-a10-chip-manufacturing-for-

    apples-iphone-7-in-2016

    Hi Rob,

I hope they kiss Sammy goodbye!

    Dr. John M

Thanks Dr John for this next one - which is per the article from Apple insider titled - TSMC may assume full control of the A10 chip manufacturing for Apples iPhone 7 in 2016.

Estimates according to the article is currently Sammy is making 60 to 70% of the A9 chips - with TSMC making the rest.

The A8 chip were mostly made by TSMC.

The article does state that a tear down of the A9X processor - the current top of the line chip used in the iPad Pro - that TSMC may be the sole supplier of said chip.

TSMC has some new tech coming on line that would make the chips smaller and lighter.  It is called InFO - standing for Integrated Fan out - and it allows chips to be stacked on top of each other and mounted directly to the circuit board instead of onto a substrate.  Because Yes - being the first customer of a brand new technology where yo will need to ship 80 Million units in the first 3 months - Yeah nothing could possibly go wrong. Yup get rid of your second source and put all your eggs in that basket - then cross your fingers - rub your rosary or rub what ever you rub for luck - because you are going to need it.

Sorry just seems to me if TSMC is going to roll out their tech first for Apple - they would want to test run it for one of the Apple product lines - one they can take a hit on and not crash the stock - and see how it goes.

So call me a little skeptical on this report - Yes would be nice to see Sammy kicked to the curb - but then it is also nice to not have to wait 16 weeks from launch to get a new iPhone because of Chip shortages.  Just Sayin.

    http://9to5mac.com/2015/12/08/apple-watch-2-

    march-4-inch-iphone-6c/

Did I mention it was spaghetti rumor time - so Hey lets throw one more against the wall - and this one comes from 9 to 5 mac and it is that Apple is planning a March Event for the Apple Watch 2 - and possible also the 4 inch iPhone 6C.  because good rumors pull in other rumors.

This rumor of the Apple event comes from Sources with knowledge of the plans.

Said sources then said Apple would start shipping the Apple Watch 2 in April.

The 9 to 5 mac piece stated that apple has been working on a New Camera, improved Wireless, Sleep tracking and health sensor tech additions / upgrades for the Apple watch - but it is not clear which of these would make it to the Apple Watch 2.  Hmmm - seems to be the spaghetti is not sticking as well on this rumor.

Anyway - we are now firmly moving squarely from the New News part of the Year to the Wild off the wall Rumor part of the year.

But as always - rumors I find going back to Digitimes - will not see the light of day on this show.

We are sorry we have some bad news to announce. During the stress tests we discovered a key failure in ZNAPS. In addition, we found one more minor problem with our first batch of ZNAPS. We have spent the past few days to confirm our initial findings and have found solutions to ensure we can still ship ZNAPS to everyone. However, the delivery date will be delayed for 50 to 60 days. Hi Rob,

This is probably going to be useful for those road warriors or conference-going folk. Once I figure out how big it is, I might order one.

maybe on the podcast you could try and mention the dimensions or how big it looks on people wearing it in pictures?

    Regards,

    Chelsea

    Hi Chelsea the MOS Pack  is 18" x 12" x 5"

To put that in perspective My absolutely favorite backpack Laptop bag - the Drifter from STM - that I have is 18.5" x 12.2" x 7.5”

That might not sound like much of a difference - but that is 1,080 cubic inches for the MOS pack vs 1,693 for the STM bag - an increase of 57% for the STM bag vs the MOS Pack bag - that is quite a big difference when trying to get stuff into the bag.

    http://www.stmbags.com/catalog/laptop-bags/drifter-medium-

    laptop-backpack/

And STM already has something similar called the Drifter Energy 15” laptop backback.  Which has some charging cords internal.

    http://www.stmbags.com/catalog/laptop-bags/drifter-15-

    powered-laptop-backpack/

    Which is also 18.5" x 12.2" x 7.5”

I guess I should explain the MOS Pack a little or at least read their description quote Power your life wherever you are. The MOS Pack transforms the humble backpack into a portable charging station for all of your devices.  The MOS PACK features a built-in charging station and internal cable management so you can charge everything without taking it all out of your backpack. unquote

Pricing wise the MOS Pack is currently $99 on Kickstarter with just a few left at that price then going to $120 for the next tier.  vs the $120 you can find the Drifter series for online.

Per the MOS Pack - they had a goal of $15k and have raised over $50k - so they are funded - you have until Jan 4th 2016 at 12:32 PM CT to fund this.

Search for MOS Pack - M O S space PACK - at kickstarter dot com or in the show notes for ep 375

    port-usb-c-dock-for-apple-macbook/posts/1431699

A while ago we talked about the HydraDock - which is was a Kickstarter project for a dock for the MacBook 2015 - the one with just the USB C port.  At the time I had a question on if it would work with the 30 Inch Cinema display and they were not sure or did not think so - well they just confirmed it does actually work with the 30 inch cinema display - so any podcasters looking to have a fanless computer and still use a 30 inch cinema display - YES - you can get that to work.  You can pre-order it now for $170 - with it shipping in January.  I contacted them yesterday and they confirmed they had 50 units still available for pre-order.

Since this is for my wife’s MacBook - and it is shipping end of January - do you think I can wrap it up for a Valentines day present?  Guess I would probably also have to get her Extra Strength Excedrin.  Those type of gifts tend to bring on head aches around Valentines day or at least it seems to work that way in the past.

A rumor from long ago is finally coming to be.  That rumor was that Apple Match and Apple Music library matching limits which were at 25,000 would be raised and Eddy Cue at Apple has confirmed that yes indeed - The limits has been raised to 100,000 tracks - or at least Apple is rolling out that update to users.  So if you are not there yet you will be shortly.

    https://ios9tweaks.wordpress.com/2015/12/03/how-to-enable-

    the-iphone-6s-keyboard-trackpad-mode-on-older-iphones/

For Jailbreakers out there - there is a tweak that allows you to set up Trackpad mode on your iPhone 6 or iPhone 5S keyboard.

Which currently is just for the iPhone 6S and 6S+.  But now older iPhones - can get this option.

The tweak is called Motus .

First you need to add Creatix’s beta repo to Cydia.  it is found at repo.ioscreatix.com

Once the repo is installed - download the tweak called MOTUS

once the tweak is installed - a swipe on the keyboard will enable trackpad mode.

The Tweak is free and there are no options - so once installed it starts working right away - link in the show notes for more info.

    en/Ford-Offers-Apple-Siri®-Eyes-Free-Millions-Vehicles

Ford is offering up a free upgrade to their Sync Software - this is for over 5 Million vehicles - and what this update will do is make Siri eyes-free available - which means Drivers can activate siri with a long press of the voice recognition button on the steering wheel.  And then drivers can ask siri the things drivers ask siri.  Such as making a phone call,  looking up a phone number for a restaurant,  finding out about the weather - because you know - it is hard to see out the car.  Select and play music,  dictate and send a text message, read a text message,  and of course get directions from Apple Maps.

This is not just for new cars - this update is good for cars going back to 2011 that have the Ford Sync software.

The download is available via owner.ford.com
