In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote “E-readers will outsell iPads because of the simple economics of the consumer device market.

It’s triple the weight and 30% thicker than an e-reader. You need two hands to hold it. It’s got a backlit screen, and it’s too expensive to give one to everyone in your house.”

Russ Wilcox, CEO E-Ink (makers of Amazon’s Kindle), 28 January 2010

So Russ Former CEO of E-Ink how did that prediction work out for you?  Guess maybe we should check with the Current CEO of e-ink - just saying.

Sunday was not sure what the lead story would be this week - but thanks to the wall street journal and their need for link bait and bingo bango bongo - we have a lead story - and that is that Apple and comcast are getting close to announcing that Apple will supply set top boxes to Comcast customers.  Well that is what it appears the rumor is.  Like any rumor from the wall street journal - it has lots and lots of people picking up a few small bits of info and then overly speculating what else might be going on and when.  Mind you from the WSJ article - it just said talks are still preliminary.  But hey this comes back to what we had been saying for the last few episodes - it sure would be nice if the next Apple TV also worked as a set top cable box.  And that is what this seems to be indicating the two parties are working towards.

    fallon-used-to-duet-with-billy-joel-on-the-tonight-show

Quite a few of you sent in a link for this next one which is about Billy Joel's guest appearance on Jimmy Fallons The Tonight show - and the use of the app called Loopy HD - which even had tim cook comment on the segment.  Which showed Billy Joel and Fallon using the app loopy HD and a couple of wireless mics and an iPad to record the different parts of the lion sleeps tonight.  Which the results are incredible. And it looked like all you needed was that app and the mics  Except there was some tech they did not show - so in addition to the iPad and the $7.99 app Loopy HD they also were using the apogee quartet to connect the wireless mics to the iPad.  The Apogee quartet by the way costs 13 - 99  - not $13 dollars - but 13 hundred and 99 dollars that is.

So there was a little bit more needed then shown.   But if you want you could use the Audio-Technica 2100 USB mic for $65 and the Apple camera connection kit for $29 and then do this with just one mic sans the Apogee Quartet.  But that would not have looked as cool.

Link in the show notes to the video of them doing the recording and the results - along with info on the set up.   Thanks again to all that sent in links for this one.

    Dear Rob,

Regarding Mike in CT in episode 300, he mentioned that when he gets a call he taps the button on the handset. That is the problem. In my experience, whichever device you use to answer the call is the one the audio goes through, so if you tap the answer button on the phone, the call goes through the phone, but if you push a button on the Bluetooth device itself, the call will go through Bluetooth.

I did not catch if he is using a monaural or stereo headset. I have used both.  The important thing is to make sure it supports the Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) if you want to listen to music or podcasts. For driving, I have been using a Jawbone ICON for years. The only thing it lacks is Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) so you can easily play/pause, but the newer Jawbone "HD" devices support AVRCP.

For stereo, I like the Plantronics BackBeat 903+, which supports both A2DP and AVRCP. I prefer the soft, flexible cable that connects the earphones behind my head, as opposed to ones which have a hard plastic band, which makes uncomfortable to wear in bed or a comfy chair.

    Regards,

    John in San Mateo

Thanks John and few others that emailed in about if you answer on the handset instead of the headset it does not go to the headset BY DEFAULT - and that is important because as this next emails shows it is a default setting.

    Hi Rob,

On your show 300 show, a caller asked about his problem with receiving calls on his handset when he really preferred to answer on his actively paired Bluetooth device.

There is a setting he can activate to more reliably do this.

    General

    Accessibility

    Incoming calls

    3 options there

    1.      Default

    2.      Headset

    3.      Speaker

    1. Default setting will direct the audio to the device that he uses to accept or initiate the call.  He may hear the ring on his paired Bluetooth device but if he answers the handset (iPhone) it will defer to the handset for audio.   If he uses this Default setting, he really needs to answer the call from the Bluetooth device directly (by use of a button or tapping, whatever the Bluetooth device uses) if he wants audio to utilize the Bluetooth device
    2. Headset – if he activates this setting then all calls will be directed to the headset even if he answers the call with the handset
    3. Speaker – if enabled, all call audio will be directed to the iPhone speaker

    Regards,

    Fraser, from Ontario

Fraser - thanks for the heads on on that. I love learning something new.

    Hi Rob,

On episode 300 you had a caller interested in a way to send a text directly from the pebble watch.  I use "Email to SMS" by Antonio Asaro. It does work in a round about way, by sending the text as an email.  You can  Google the carriers email address but you have to know the persons carrier who you are sending the text to.  I use it for my wife since most of the time all others can wait. Your not able to reply directly but it does get the job done.

Also I use the Plantronics Voyager Legend UC (https://www.plantronics.com/us/product/voyager-legend-uc)

Tons of features and very smart. Works flawlessly between all Bluetooth (iPhone, iPad, all rental car Bluetooth system devices) devices that I have tried to date. Also has a USB that plugs into your PC/Mac to use as soft phone. I work from home and travel a lot and use it every day all day.

I have had a Jawbone icon in the past, which had the best background reduction in my experience.  However I lost it like I have most other headsets.  The Voyager Legend UC comes with a great carrying case that charges it too so it's harder for me to lose.

It retails for $200 but is only $119 on Amazon. (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B009ZJ3MUM?pc_redir=1395091984&robot_redir=1)

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

Hey you know how I know the community is getting big - because now I am getting the spammers applying to join in.  I reject a good 20 plus last week - so if you applied to get into the community and did not get accepted - email me - it is possible I rejected one of you legit folks by mistake.

One question in the community was from James Cipriano he asked quote Can someone explain the difference between powering down, reseting by holding the power button and home button, and reseting network connections in settings.  What is an example for use of each. unquote

As mentioned in the thread - a simple power down - hold the power button for a few seconds and then slide the slider - will put the phone basically in a deep deep sleep - and when you power back on - it goes back to where you were - and if you had issue - back to those as well.

A hard forced reboot - is really not recommended - that is when you hold the power and home button until said device shuts downs and reboots.

And then there is what I often recommend - which is the reset network settings - which clears out all open communication sessions and reboots the phone.  The reason this seems to solve lots of issues is that lots of issues are with apps and the radios getting stuck when trying to communicate.  This fixes those issues by resetting everything communication wise - guess what if you have lots of radios in a device - some times there are conflicts and issues.  Is it a cure all - No absolutely not - but from my experience and many callers experience it is a cure many.  James I hope that helps.

And there were dozens and dozens and dozens of other posts in the Google+ community - and all in an Android bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

    http://www.idownloadblog.com/2014/03/21/how-to-place-folders-within-

    folders-on-ios-7-1/

Ok - again thanks to all that sent in the link on this next one - which is a way to get nested folders back in iOS 7.1

This comes from Jose Rodriguez and it requires some planning and quick reflexes. It works like this - have your folder you want to nest in another folder set up.  next to it have two apps not in folders - drag one app on to the other app - as it is creating a folder tap and hold the folder you want to nest in the new folder and drag it on to and into the new folder.  I did this and it did work for me.  But it does take some getting used to.  And is not as simple as taking your current folders and dragging them into another folder you had already.

But if you plan right you could then drag two other apps together and take that first folder your created and nest that in there - and then you are three layers deep in folders.

But forget about placing anything new in the nested folder - once that folder is nested - you can not add anything to it.  So again if you want this to be useful you need to do some advanced planning - which honestly seems like way way too much work - I would rather just play a game or chess If I have to start thinking 5 moves out.

    http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/03/22/apples-iphone-5c-failure-flop-

    outsold-blackberry-windows-phone-and-every-android-flagship-in-q4

Thanks that sent in the post from Apple Insider - which goes over again the Myth and the reality of the iPhone 5C sales.  The myth is that the iPhone 5C is an abysmal failure - the Edsel of the smartphone industry or maybe even worse the Dell Ditty of the smartphone industry.

And then there is the reality - in the fall - the iPhone 5C was either the 2nd or 3rd best selling smartphone at all the major US carriers.

The article is nice to calling to task those that most helped propagate the myth or fabrication or lie that the iPhone 5C is not selling at all.  And those people according to the article are Lorraine Luk, Eva Dou and Ian Sherr from the WSJ and Brad Reed and Chris Ciaccia from BGR

Now to be fair to Reed and Ciaccia at BGR - Apple insider also pointed out that in the past others at BGR have called the 4S a failure, and the 4 and the 3GS.   Yeah - the all failed if you call being the top selling smartphone globally during the initial release only getting knocked off by another iPhone - and I guess from that perspective - the 5C definitely does not live up to it predecessors  - as it was never close to being the best selling smartphone in the world - because it had the unfortunate situation where it was released at the same time as the iPhone 5S.  The point is this - if someone calls the iPhone 5C a failure or a flop - they can only be talking with respect to how it sold vs the iPhone 5S - because if they compare it to any other smartphone in the world sold last quarter - then will only the 5S beat it - not even the Galaxy S4 sold as many as is projected that the 5C sold last quarter.

I am guessing Blackberry would kill to have a flop or failure like the 5C.

    http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9247123/iOS_tops_Android_for

    _Web_browsing_in_U.S._and_other_developed_nations?

Well there is another group of web surfing numbers released for mobile devices.  Hey and same as it ever was.  Even though there are more Android devices out there - the majority of web browsing on mobile devices by a wide margin is once again done on iOS devices.  62% of ALL mobile web browsing from the US in 2013 was done on an iOS device.

But the US was not the country with the highest % using iOS - the UK and France were at 65% - Japan was at 68% - Canada was at 73% and Australia showing once again it has the smartest people in the world - had 74% of mobile web browsing from an iOS device.

In China - it was only 49.5% from iOS.   But expect that number to rise now that Apple is finally on the largest carrier there.  Actually it is amazing it is 49.5% as that was for 2013 all prior to the launch on China Mobile.

Again interesting stats - but given that Android devices are out selling - with selling in quotes - iOS devices in all those countries - it does not matter as iOS devices are actually you know used more in all those countries and it is not close for the developed nations.

And that is about a tweet from Joe Belifiore - who is the chief of Microsoft's windows phone dev and design - In his tweet he posted a shot of Bill and Melinda gates speaking to his twitter account from an iPhone - dooohhh.  He said he just happened to be doing competitive testing on the latest iOS - but really - posting a public tweet from an iPhone while testing - what are you doing showing everyone at MS and the world that the iPhone running iOS 7 can post to twitter - I think Ellen degenerous already proved that point. Just Sayin.

    Hi Rob,

I just wanted to make a comment you said when you were comparing upgrading from the 4 to the 4S or to the 5 that you would not recommend going from a 4s to a 5 well I will have to disagree with you because in my opinion with Verizon that was a major upgrade going from 3G to 4G LTE

    Regards Steve

Hi Steve - valid point if you were on Verizon - but pretty much every other carrier at that point and time for the majority of their users - the update from the 4S to 5 - did not bring a big update in download speeds.  Sure for some users it did - but most user did not have access to LTE speeds when the 5 launched.  But yes for those that did - that was a nice bump - that said - when I did my comparisons of the different updates - I actually factored in LTE and gave it a +3 in my scale.

    http://tii.libsyn.com/i-phone-5-how-big-an-update-vs-past-updates-for-i-phone-4s-and-4

I will put a link to my blog post from Sept 12th where I compared updates - and in that comparison - it was clear the 4S update was a bigger deal compared to the 4 than the 5 was to the 4S - even when including the LTE update.  of course if you had verizon service and traveled a lot and download speed is your most important factor - then LTE vs 3G might for those users be more important than everything else.

    Hello Rob

You previously mentioned about Apple acquiring some sapphire from a company. I have seen rumors on the Internet about an iRing coming out to control your iPod. I think this is what the Sapphire maybe use for more than anything, please let me know your thoughts on this.

    Thanks

    Doug

    Cincinnati

Nope - and Nope - as is nope the sapphire is not for the iRing and nope there is no iRing.

    Hi Rob,

    Congratulations on your 300th episode.

I'm commenting on the notification bug a caller shared with a particular app which calls the notification arrow to show nonstop on his iPhone. I'm having the same problem with the app foursquare, in which the notification arrow stays lit on my iPhone home screen even though the app is closed out and not running in the background. But when I go in the privacy settings to switch off the notification for Foursquare the arrow goes away. I have done the steps you recommend to the other caller:

•To clear out all of the background apps

    •Reset network settings.

The problem is still there. Do you have any other recommendations before I contact the people at Foursquare and let them know this is a bug?

    Grace & Peace,

    Brian

Hi Brian - here is an email from Ben K.

    Hi Rob,

A caller said he was having problems with location settings on all the time. I think it is because of iOS 7.1. Background app refresh now functions without apps being in multitasking. Settings general background app refresh and if he turns that off, it should be fixed.

    Regards,

    Ben K

Ok - so what sets this one apart from others is that it uses a peer to peer mesh network.  That means if you have multiple iOS devices with wifi or bluetooth running even with no internet connection - they can connect together and messages can move across the mesh network these devices create - this is thanks to a feature in iOS 7 called Multipeer connectivity framework -  Which again is called a mesh network from the 1990s terminology.  Which is cool - as a group of people at a party or university could set up their own mesh network with the app sending messages to one another that never get seen by the NSA or anyone not on the mesh. Overly Practical for the masses - probably not - but very cool to see implemented and maybe for some niche it will find a home.

This next one is for the devs out there.  It is a post titled - Get on Apple's radar - and gives suggestions on how to get Apple to notice and feature you.  This offers some pretty good advice and goes along with what I have seen work for Podcasts.  At the end of the day Apple only has a limited number of slots where they can feature Apps - and many many more times the number of Apps then said slots.  So it helps if you know someone at Apple - and knowing someone at apple means putting in some work to meet some one at apple at a live event - wwdc or one of their dev tours - or as they recommend - submitting bug reports during the beta process and afterwards. You would be surprised how well the do something nice for someone else - and have something nice done for you approach works.  Anyway if you are a dev - this is a nice read.  Most of these type articles I tend to skip over - but this one made the cut.  Look for the link titled - Get on Apple's Radar in the show notes for ep 301

I want to take a minute now to talk about Hover - if you go to hover.com and use promo code - tiiTV you can get 10% off your domain name registrations and transfers when you sign up as a new hover user.

And today I am going to talk about Email - Hover offers up custom emails. Which if you are trying to look professional - you at your own domain dot com looks more impressive then your name 64 @ gmail dot com.  I know I go to my rob@podcast411.com email when I am reaching out to someone new and trying to impress. Plus I am going to NAB in April and I got a press pass and one of the requirements was your email could not be from a free email account.  So todayinios at gmail would not work - but rob@podcast411.com did.

Hover has great tutorials on how to set up your custom email for your iOS device as well as many other tutorials on setting up the email for other platforms and software.

Hovers email offering is everything you would be looking for - POP and IMAP - Webmail - 2Gig of storage - email forwarding and wait for it - Customer support.  Yes with hover your get great customer support - which is one thing I hear back all the time form listeners that use hover - they love the customer support.  All that for $20 a month.  $35 a month gets you to 10 Gig of storage.  Or $5 a month will get you email forwarding to your gmail account.

No matter which one you choose - it is much more professional sounding to have your name at your domain dot com - that something at gmail dot com.

Remember to save 10% on your registrations or email accounts go to hover.com - and use promo code tiiTV - that is tii T V.  Isn't it time for you to like registering domain names again.  Thanks Hover for supporting this show.

    Hi Rob,

I have seen some posts about battery life being worse in 7.1 but on my iPhone 5, it seems better.

I used to lose 10% battery over 8 hours at night if I did not plug it in…now I lose none.

Maybe it fixed something running wild but I tried everything including getting a new phone on my Square Trade warranty and it as all the same.

    Weird.

    Edgar P

    Tampa, FL

Edgar - not weird - you see what I see and many other see - no change or improved battery life.  It is those squeaky wheels that get the blog posts.  Plus blog posts with the title - Of Battery life stays the same and may go up a little in iOS 7.1 - don't get the link bait love - that "Lots of iOS 7.1 users are experience dire battery life" or something else more ominous sounding.

    Hi Rob,

Apple definetly  headed in the right direction with

7.1 with some of the accessibility optoins, but my hope

is they can improve some things.

    1. The keyboard text could be even bolder like

    the older iOS versions.

    2. The background being more of a beige shade like

    the older iOS versions.

I will say though that Touch ID does work more smoothly for me and seldom

    have to enter a passcode.

    Regards,

    Rick from East Haven, CT

    Hi Rick Go Huskies.

HeyRob! It's Laura in Nashville! Wondering what you think of this app that actually downloads from this website and not the App Store? It shows tons of free movies and cartoons, even new movies like frozen. Sounds too good to be true so it probably is, but seems sketchy that it acts like if you click on take me to the App Store button it just downloads the app to your home screen

    http://gappcenter.com/cartoon/

    Hi Laura,

    Wow seems really really sketchy.

That they show the Available on the App store link and all - but when you click on that for an iOS device it will put a webapp on your iOS device.  And who knows what is happening with the videos it streams.

My guess is they are really going after android users with maleware and side loading an app - and they added the iOS part to make the site look legit.  If you notice there is the Google Play button there that does not take you to google play.

This is why there is male ware issues out there - and what better bait then with free videos - now usually they are for disney nasties - You know movies staring some 18 year old named bambi and some hairless dude named thumper that they use to lore victims in and not real disney movies like Frozen.  But you have to admit they did a really good job making the site look legit.

    Hi Rob,

I Just posted the story on 7.1 Jailbreak to the google Plus community. Its a good start. Here is the link.

    Regards,

    Chris in London

Thanks Chris for the link - so far it looks like they have the iPhone 4 running iOS 7 jailbroken - but it is going to be some time before they get them all and get a non-tethered jailbreak for iOS 7.1 for all devices -  which means if you need to jailbreak - and are jailbroken - do not - repeat do not upgrade to iOS 7.1.  Just need to chill for a while - and it could be a long while.

Thanks to Bob B and a few others for the heads up on this next one.  Actually this is one that in the future is destined for feature in the how wrong were they segment.   And it is about the Anal-ist - Trip Chowdhry - with Global Equities Research who said quote

""They only have 60 days left to either come up with something or they will disappear,"  It will take years for Apple's $130 billion in cash to vanish, but it will become an irrelevant company ... it will become a zombie, if they don't come up with an iWatch."

Yes - because only an iWatch will save Apple from becoming I guess well what Dell has become.  Sounds like Trip is taking the money clients gave him and he is spending it on cheap booze and LSD.  Because he clearly is tripping out if he thinks if Apple does not release an iWatch before WWDC - that they will essentially become dead man walking.

I don't know whats his problem.

Hi Sharde - I could not replicate this issue using my iPhone 5S - and my 4S is jailbroken at a lower level - so I am going to through this out to anyone in the audience - are you having issues with Siri not being able to set a reminder in your iPhone 4S running iOS 7.1?  If so give us a call 206-666-6364 - thats 206-moon-dog or send an email to today in iOS At gmail dot com.

    Hey Rob:

So excited that iOS 7.1 includes CarPlay.  Apple has done their side, now I am waiting for Honda to do their side of things, which will be some sort of update at the Honda dealer. When I called Honda America Customer Service, they knew what I was talking about (!!!) and said the update would be coming "soon."  They said there would be a notification on the HondaLink Owner's site.  That was over a week ago, so I am wondering if you have any idea of what is happening?

I have been a Today in iOS podcast listener for about a year and love hearing what is going on, and actually understand some of it!

Thanks for all you do.  Keep up the good work and congrats on Episode 300!

    Hi Rob,

Have you or any listeners had this happen? I searched for autozone. Found the app. I clicked FREE. I clicked INSTALL. Then I get the message

Quote - The Item you tried to buy is no longer available unquote

Any ideas what is going on. I restarted my iphone and got the same results.

Thanks for all you do. Ive been a listener since day one and still learn something every episode.

    Guy in Indiana

Hi Guy - usually that means the app has been pulled down or put on hold by the dev - maybe they are getting ready to do an update or they noticed a major bug - and have an update getting ready to submit.  Or it could just be an issue on iTunes side as a re-index is going on.  iTunes sometimes acts flakey - but when I have seen this before for some of our apps at libsyn - it was because we had put it on hold as we got ready to update.

That all said - the app in question downloaded fine for me - which was the free Autozone app.

This week we have promo codes for a few Apps.  The first App we have promo codes for is the App EZ-SYNC FB - This is an app that allows you to sync Facebook profile pictures to contacts.  This will display your Facebook friends profile picture for incoming calls from that person / contact.

They also have two other apps they sent in promo codes for - EZ-Sync IN and EZ-SYNC GP  -  These do the same thing but rather for your Linked in contacts and Google Plus contacts respectively.  If you would like one of these send in an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com and put ez sync - FB or ez sync IN or ez sync GP in the subject line of the email.

The fourth app we have promo codes for is the app - RINGTONE STUDIO PRO.  This app allows you to create, edit and customize your own personalized ringtones and alert sounds.  As with other apps like this you do need to sync anything you create with it back to iTunes to make it available for use on your iOS device.  But this app does allow you to record your own voice and edit it, create unlimited ringtones, there is even a face in / out feature.

Folks if you would like a chance for a promo code for this app - send an email to todayinos at gmail dot com and put RINGTONE in the subject line.

As Always - just send in one email for one specific item.  If you send in multiple emails or ask for multiple items in a single email - then well - No Soup for you

    hits-12-48-hours

One thing that people like to watch after a launch of a major iOS update is the % of users upgrading - see not everyone or actually almost no one listens to my advice about waiting.  In 48 hours after 7.1 launched - 12% of iOS users were already upgraded.  After 72 hours that number was up to 21% of iOS users.

To put that in perspective - Android 4.4 KitKat - The last Major update for Android out since the end of October - it has 2.5% of Android users upgraded as of March 1st - according to Google.  So 3 days to 21% for iOS - 4+ months for 2.5% for Android.  Hmmm - which one would you rather program for.  Just Sayin

    http://appadvice.com/appnn/2014/03/apples-ios-7-1-update-actually-

    made-touch-id-worse-for-a-lot-of-users

Ok - now not everything is all peaches and cream for all those that updated to iOS 7.1 - as happens with every update - there is a small % of users with some issues.  But a small % of a large number is ofter reported as a lot of users as in this next post - quote Apples iOS 7.1 update actually made tough ID worse for a lot of users unquote - again a lot of users is a lot different than most users or even a large % of users - it is a small % of users that are seeing the issue.

From Listeners Michael that sent this link quote - iOS 7.1 seems better so far for me, 7.0.x for me it slowly got worse after I registered my prints  unquote  For me personally - touch ID has always worked well - but then again I always keep Reduce Motion turned on - which seems to help many.

    http://itechtriad.com/articles/2014/3/12/ios-71-gets-rid-of-nested-

    folders-one-of-its-useful-bugs#.UyehE1xcLqA

As it typical - not all updates fix bugs that you want fixed - for example with iOS 7.1 - one bug fixed was the ability to have nested folders.  It is being reported that this bug - feature - option is now gone in iOS 7.1

Honestly - I never created a nested folder in 7.0.x - so I can't say if it was working or not on my devices before reading this - but I can say on all my iOS device running 7.1 - two iPhones and two iPads - it is not allowing for nested folders now.

    html?utm_content=buffereadc4&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm

    _campaign=buffer

There are reports of some people have greatly reduced battery life - in most of these cases - the solution seems to be wait for it - yup - force quitting all apps and then going to settings - general - reset - and selecting reset network settings.  Seems - doing that force quits at background task that might have been running when the update was performed and got stuck in a loop.  Hmmm - so lets get this right - if you do the update like I suggested - then you would not have this issue.  But if you did not listen to me and just did the update willy nilly - and now have horrible battery life do the reset network settings - if that does not work for you - then your next solution is to do a full restore.  But hey if you listened to me to start with then you are likely ok.

Well actually if you listened to me - you have not updated yet.  Which I can now recommend based on all I read - as long as you follow my instructions per the last show which again are:

Sync over all your photos you may have taken to iPhoto or whatever you use - you don't want to loose any recent photos.

Next force quit all your open apps

Then sync and back up your iOS device to your computer.  and sync one more time for good measure.

Then go to Settings and general and Reset and select Reset network settings.

Once your iOS device reboots - rejoin your Wifi network - which if it has a password you need to re-enter.

Then go and do the upgrade.

Following the above steps does seem to make upgrades go better and with fewer issues.

As always if you are a jail breaker - stay away from the update

Here is some feedback from other listeners.

    Hello Rob,

I find with the 7.1 update my touch id works much better, it is like night and day the improvement.  With the 7 old I estimate only a 70 percent success rate on signing in on the first try.  With 7.1 it has gone to about 95 percent on the first try and about 99% on the second try.  The old 7 had about 90 percent success rate on the second try.

Hi rob, I've noticed that in iOS 7.1, when you have autobrightness on, the slider in control center actually reflects the current brightness of the screen.

In previous versions of iOS, it simply adjusted the brightness without changing the slider position. Or I could be completely wrong about all of this and it's just my new iPhone. I'm constantly thinking "is it iOS 7.1 or my new iPhone" since I got the iPhone on my birthday then two days later iOS 7.1 came out. It's a pretty good birthday present if you ask me. It would've been better for me if I was still stuck on the iPhone 4, though as everyone on the internet a saying it runs a lot better.

    Regards,

Well Ben in this case I looked at an iPhone 4 and 5S side by side both running iOS 7.1 and here is something interesting - the iPhone 5S - auto adjusts the slide bar when you move it in and out of bright light - but the iPhone 4 - the slider remains static - even as the screen gets bright or darker.  So this looks to be an iPhone 5S feature.  or a feature missing from the iPhone 4.

Hi Rob - Before 7.1 you could list all calendar events by selecting the magnifying  glass at the top of the page. Now that selection results in a useless (for me) search option.  Maybe there is another process to display the entire list but I haven't found it yet. I was caught on this for the iPhone 5s but won't upgrade the iPad Air until this change is corrected. I try to catch every show - learn something every time.

    Regards,

    Michael

    Hi Rob,

Correction:::: Hooray - they didn't eliminate the full event listing as I, and some net folks thought.  Just trickery to find it - expand the calendar with the underlined box at the top and touch any day date to get full list!!!

    Regards again

    Hi Rob,

I have been playing around with iOS 7.1 for a couple of days, and I wanted to comment on some of my favorite new features/tweaks.

I am really impressed with how fast and smooth everything is running with the new update. Apps are opening and closing faster, the keyboard seems to have less lag, and the graphics in general are much more snappy.

Speaking of the keyboard, I am a big fan of the minor changes they made here as well. The text is slightly more bold and the background to the keyboard is slightly darker and it looks and works much better in my experience.

It seemed like most of the complaints about iOS 7 have been how bright and white it is, and it seems Apple has addressed this issue in 7.1. The Reduce White Point and Darken Colors options work very well. I had no real issues with it previously, but turning these features on have really made the OS look even better. Such seemingly small tweaks, but I am loving them.

Kudos to Apple for another successful update, and I am looking forward to great things in iOS 8!

    Regards,

    Bruce W.

    Hi Rob

I called at&t and was told how to resolve the issue of voicemails reappearing.  So far, it has worked for me.  First, I tapped and held the 1 key on my phone, which took me directly to my voicemail.  Then, I manually deleted those I wished to be rid of. Then, I pressed the * key and exited the voicemail.  Next, I did a hard reset on my phone.  Then, I went back into my visual voicemail and (the deleted messages remain) performed the usual delete process.  They now seem to remain deleted.  I guess, so far, this is working.

If you are still having the issue, I hope this works for you.

    Rob,

In response to a caller on the last episode, I have a really simple way of checking the price of an app you already own. On your iPhone, go to the app's page in the App Store app, tap the Sharing icon in the upper-right, then tap the Gift button in the action sheet. This will show you the current price of the app, then you can just tap Cancel. A similar method can be done in iTunes on your computer. Regards,

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One post was a question about finding the Battery Percentage toggle - so you can see your battery % left.  That was from Tosin O - and the answer is - Settings --> General --> Usage - which you will then find the toggle for the Battery % indicator.  Also per that question - thanks to John Hynes to his comment to the post about a jailbreak app called Batterylife - one word - that shows not just the battey's current charge but also its capacity or % of original capacity that is.  So if you have a jailbroken iPhone and it is a couple of years old this sounds like a nice app.  I installed this app on my iPhone 4S - which is still jailbroken and it shows my battery capacity is at 83% of what it was when brand new.  So when I see 90% for my battery - it is 90% of the reduced 83% capacity.  Not 90% of the capacity it had over two years ago.  It says I the iPhone 4S has been cycled a total of exactly 365 times.  Interesting that it was exactly on one years worth of cycles.  Will fun to see what those numbers are a few months from now.

There was also a post from Myron Uecker where he said quote Most people are aware that if you hold down certain keys like dash (-) on the built-in keyboard it will give you options for special characters. There are a few different keys that do that. unquote

Yeah lots of people forget about that feature when holding down certain keys give you some extra hidden special characters - like a holding the Question mark key down gets you an option for the inverted question mark - or holding down the Zero key gets you the Degrees symbol and so on - there are a bunch.

Thanks to Ben K for this next one.  Which is a rumor that Apple might re-introduce the discontinues iPad 4 to replace the very long lived iPad 2.  And That Apple would also intro a 8 GB iPhone 5C.  These rumors come to 9 to 5 mac from a source.  This goes along with what KGI Securities Anal-ist Ming-Chi Kuo said back in February would happen.

Now it is speculated that if these two are intro'd at the same time - it would also mean the death of the iPhone 4S - thus moving Apple to an All lightening port iOS device lineup.  Thus killing off the 30 pin doc connector offerings.

Some of this speculation goes back to data released from Asian App analytics company - Umeng - they show iPhone 5C usage flat lining while iPhone 5S numbers continue to grow very strongly.

Which well I find it hard to draw lines together on these two items - if the 5C sales are flat lined - will intro'g an 8GB version help?  Not really - not unless you can drastically reduce the price point of it.

Well some of this rumors have the re-intro of the iPad 4th gen and iPhone 5C 8GB to happen on Tuesday the 18th - and Yup - That is what happened.

PLAY AUDIO CLIP - JUST WHEN I THOUGHT I WAS OUT

Apple Killed off the long lived iPad 2 - and re-introduced the iPad 4th gen as the new low cost iPad offering for the larger iPads.  So here is the current bottom of the line pricing from Apple on iPad's - Pricing is in US dollars.

All devices start with 16 Gig of storage and Wifi connectivity.

$299 - gets you the iPad mini - 1st gen

$399 - gets you a choice of the iPad mini retina or the iPad 4th gen

$499 - gets you the iPad Air

Add $130 to those prices to get Cellular.

Add $100 to the iPad Air and iPad Mini Retina and go to 32 GB or another $100 to  64 GB or another 100 for 128 GB.  So pricing ranges from $299 to $929 for the iPad line.  Which is where it was before the change - the main change being the iPad 2 is now officially dead - and the iPad 4th gen is back from the dead.

Interesting on the intro of the 8 GB iPhone 5C - it is not yet in Apples US store - but is there in the UK store.  Just add uk forward slash after apple.com and before iPhone/compare - and you can see it in the UK store.  I also see it in the Australian store and the french store - but not the US or Russian or Japanese or Brazillian or any other store I could find to check.  So right now at least the 8 GB iPhone 5C is in just a very limited number of markets.  I will say this - I do not not ever recommend an 8GB iPhone or even the 16GB for that matter.  With the size of apps - especially universal apps - you will run out of 8 GB before you know what happened.  32 GB is the bare min I recommend for any iOS device - and for my Wife for her iPad mini Retina - I went with 128 GB - it is where we keep ALL our photos and a bunch of home movies.  Well there and on my computer - but always good to have that extra back up.

Thanks Doug G for this next one - which gets us into some rumors of new stuff - which is much more interesting in rumors of old and small capacity stuff.  This first one is about iOS 8 - and it comes from a post by IBTimes - which yes is a link bait farm.  But since this really is not so much rumors - like I heard it from a source - as much as it is - their speculation - I thought it ok to mention.  They speculate the biggest changes will be around Apple Maps, iTunes Radio and Healthbook.  With Apple Maps they speculate Apple Maps updates are in store - due to the big number of acquisitions Apple made in this area - 1/3 of acquisitions Apple made in 2013 were mapping related.  One of the big holes to fill is the lack of Public Transit or bike route options in Major Metro areas.  Plus there is CarPlay - Apple is pushing and Maps and turn by turn navigation is going to be a big part of that.

Per iTunes Radio they speculated well iTunes Radio would get an App of its own - graduating to stand alone app status like the Podcasts app before it.

And then there is Healthbook - Essentially this would be the app you manage your mobile wearing / fitness monitoring device data.  Does that mean it will work with just an iWatch - or will Apple open the App up to support third party devices is the billions of dollars questions.

Essentially the post was very very short on specifics or even generalities for that mater - but it is time we start speculating about iOS 8 - as it will be announced some time in June at the next WWDC.

    first-major-step-into-health-fitness-tracking/#more-314915

Per the Healthbook app - some liken this to a passbook type app - except for monitoring your health.  Some supposed images show it with tabs for Bloodwork, Heat rate, Blood pressure, Weight, Sleep, and much more.

This will supposedly be a big part of iOS 8.

I would guess this would be again an aggregation app talking with other apps and devices - both from Apple and 3rd parties.  Think about it being able to bring in your weight from your fitbit scale. and your heart rate from your iWatch and so on.

This is one of those things - I don't think will draw in many users - but for those that use it - it will definitely lock them in.

Thanks to Chris in London for this next one - which is a rumor or really a mock up on what an Apple TV could look like - Yeah - Rumor is not the right phrase - as no one is saying this is the next Apple TV - just would it not be cool if this was the next Apple TV.

And in this mockup - the Remote for the next gen Apple TV would be touch screen device - yes - because we all want a remote control that needs constant charging.  Sorry not buying this as even REMOTELY possible - Oh - bad pun-  sorry but could not hep but touch on that.

I did like the look of their mock ups - especially for the Apple TV - which included a black device and a Gold device - essentially take the look and feel of the iPhone 5S - and use those lines and coloring for the new Apple TV - it definitely looks good - except when you get back to the remote control with the touch screen.

Well hopefully not much longer before we find out one way or the other on what the next Apple TV will bring us - and how much I will be spending on it.

Thanks to Tash for this next one - which is a post on MacRumors titled - iPhone 6 May include temperature, pressure and humidity sensors.

This post is based on info from a twitter like post from Sun Chang Xu on her weibo account where quote According to Sun Chang Xu (news chief analyst at ESM-China), sources close to the matter have revealed that Apple will catch up in the “sensors department”, as the iPhone 6 will feature pressure, temperature and humidity sensors. Please note that the analyst is probably not referring to blood pressure (this feature is rumored to be implemented in Apple’s iWatch) but to atmospheric pressure. unquote  Part of this speculation is the Analist in question bringing up these possible "Features" because they are in the Galaxy S4 already.  So yes because Sammy Feature creeped - we must now feature creep.  This rumor I don't buy - I guess I just am not seeing the practical reasons to add Pressure and humidity sensors for the masses.

    http://techraptor.net/2014/03/11/android-app-scams-users-real-money/

Here is an interesting one about a malware app - the App - named Camara Vision Nocturn - which is supposed to be an app that adds night vision to your smartphone's camera and it is a free app - once users installed the App it would request permissions to send and write SMS (text) messages on your phone - because what night vision app does not need those capabilities - well it seems once there permissions were given the app would scan the smartphone for popular instant messaging apps like what app and charon - in order to locate their phone number - which those apps require to function.  Then the App would send info to a server which would register it for a premium SMS service - and then you would get charged $3 and can keep charging you up to a max of $50 a month.  Of course we are talking about an App slash Malware that is just on the Android side - but isn't interesting or sad to see what the other half needs to deal with .

Samsung is not have much luck lately with their celebrity endorsements - last week it was about Ellen stepping out with her true love the iPhone.  This week it is about Lebron James and his tweets - or specifically this tweet from Lebron quote My phone just erased everything it had in it and rebooted. One of the sickest feelings I’ve ever had in my life!!!” unquote

Lebron has since deleted that tweet - probably right after his agent called reminding him how much Sammy is paying him to shill their wares - and that reminder included the message if you don't have something nice to say - don't say anything at all.

Lebron did tweet later on he got all his data back - or so he says.  But how much can we trust someone that deletes their tweets.

Hi Rob, This is really neat and Revolutionary - I hope they make their goal. Can you mention this on the podcast. Regards - Michael

And the THIS that Michael so nicely pointed out is the Airbulb one word on Kickstarter.

AirBulb combines an energy efficient LED bulb and wireless speaker in a single unit that can be controlled via iOS devices.

Their goal is $100,000 dollars - a bit high.  Their pledge amount so far is $25,000 so wiping out the calculator app that tells me that they are 25% of the way towards their goal.  They have until April 28th at 8:02 AM CT to get the other 75% - did not need the calculator on that one.  As of this time that is 41 days to go - which is a lot of time - so a good chance they will hit their goal.

Per the costs on this - $59 gets you the early bird offer of a single Airbulb and $105 gets you the early bird offer of 2 bulbs.  Pricing jumps to $69 and $125 respectively when the earl birds are gone - and they are going fast.

They are definitely redefining the term mood lighting.  You can change the color and brightness right from your iOS device - and if you know someone that is deaf - this is night as it will flash the light bulb when a call comes in.

If this is something you are interested in - search for Airbulb - one word at kickstarter dot com or in the show notes for ep 300.

I want to take a minute now to talk about today's sponsor.  And that is Hover - if you go to hover.com and use the promo code TIITV one word as a new user you can get 10% off your domain name registrations.

I can say having registered domains names at a few other services in the past - Hover is with out a doubt my favorite site to register and manage domains and where I manage all my domains now.  The interface is so drop dead simple - it is not cluttered it is not insulting to your senses and it is not trying to up sell you with confusing links and additional screens that make no sense.

Hover just presents the info you need and that is it. And then when it is time to manage your domains and add redirects - it is so easy and fast to do.

And they also make it simple and cheap to transfer domains from other registers to Hover.  Just $10 for all domain transfers sans .co domains.

And if their tutorials on transferring domains is not your thing - they have a number you can call and speak to them as in speak to a real person and they will take care of the entire tansfer - just go to hover.com and in the upper right you will see the 1-866 number.  mention you heard about them on this show and mention promo CODE TIITV to save 10% on your registrations.   When you call that number they will help you transfer over all your domains from any of those other guys and then going forward you will have one nice easy to use interface to add redirects and manage your domains.

Remember the promo code TIITV for new users of hover to save 10% on your purchases.

Isn't it time for you to like registering domain names again.  Thanks Hover for supporting this show.

When I'm surfing the web on my iDevices I frequently open links in tabs (iPad) or in the background (iPhone) by touching and holding the link until the pop up menu appears, then selecting the open in tabs/background option.

The problem is that this only works for me about 80% of the time. The other 20% no menu appears and the link opens in my current window, or I have to very carefully slide my finger off the link and try again.

Is 80% just the normal success rate for this, or is there a more reliable technique that has eluded me?

Chris called in wanting to know if there was a way to clear the app badge on the messages app after he read the text from the lock screen.

Since he's jail broken he should go try BiteSMS. It's basically the reason I jailbreak, and has so many improvements over the stock messages app. You can read, mark as read, or reply to messages all from the locks screen. You can try it for free without adds for a week, after that there are some pretty inconspicuous adds in the app itself, not on the lock screen. I paid for a forever license, $7.99, and it is well worth it.

If you remember about two years ago - I released a free iBook - Well I just redid the book - and released version 2 - To find the free iBook on an iPad or Mac running mavericks - search for podcast101 - one word.  Or look for the link in the show notes.  If you had not downloaded this before - I would greatly appreciate the download.  Even if you are not interested in learning how to podcast - as it helps me in the rankings.  And I am trying to see how many new downloads it takes to get into the top 200 overall.

For those interested in starting a podcast - this teaches you everything you need to know on how to get a podcast started and launched.  It includes going over the brand new libsyn 4 UI - plus of course how to record and edit using audacity.   Another version is coming in the future to cover Garageband.  But first I need to update to mavericks and the latest version of Garageband.

Anyway - I put in some audio recording samples showing a few different mics.  And I removed the recommendation on using feedburner - as I know longer believe Google will support it long term.

Plus more tips and tricks a new podcaster needs to know when getting started.

Again I would greatly appreciate if everyone with an iPad or running Mavericks or really anyone with iTunes - would download this FREE - as in ZIP - NADDA - No cost to you iBook - just search for podcast101 one word in iBooks and iTunes.

Thanks for helping out - and I will report on numbers of download to get into the top 200 if I get into the top 200.  Right now I am up to 44th place in Computers and internet - and 2nd place in sub category of Digital media.

Thanks again to lynda dot com for their support of Tii - and if you go to lynda dot com slash tii - that is l y n d a dot com slash t i i  - you will get a free 7 day trial. Thanks Lynda for sponsoring this show and for the free offer.

Thanks again to our sponsor Hover dot com - remember for new users use promo code TiiTV one word to get 10% off your purchase.  Hover is who I manage all my domains with and I really do love their service and recommend them even when they are not advertising on the show.  Again use promo code TiiTV to save 10% when you first purchase domain names with Hover.

If you want to know when new episodes go up - look at the Tii app - not just the best way to consume the show - but also a great way to get a push message when a new episode goes live or there is other iOS breaking news.  Just $2.99 in the app store - it helps you get the most out of the show and it helps support the show at the same time - plus it makes it really easy to email or call the show with your feedback.  Again just search for Tii in the iTunes app store.

And Before we go today I want to remind you to send in your feedback to the show - 206-666-6364 - that 206-moon-dog - or record your feedback and email it to the show at today in iOS at gmail dot com - The  feedback can be a question or comment per something someone said on this episode or it can be a question or rant you have about something else.  An App or product review - good or bad - as long as it is iOS related - it is welcomed.  I am always looking for new Artwork to feature that you created on an iOS device - just put some Tii branding on it and send it in.  And of course we are always looking for more music created on an iOS device to play on the show.  This is your show and your feedback is greatly desired.  And don't forget to check out our Moderated Google Plus community by going to todayinios dot com slash community.

And that folks is going to do it for us today.

Thanks JEFF for the music and folks I will put the full song at the end of the episode.    I also want to thank  ROD for sending in the Artwork for today's show.  ROD had the following to say.

    Hi Rob,

I am not an artist or graphic designer by trade but I do like to 'have a go' and see what I can knock together.

Since buying the iPad Air in November of last year it has truly enhanced my creative passion and made it so much more portable and convenient. Also thanks to its great wealth of productivity apps that I just in general couldn't get from Android it has enabled me to shelve my laptop. I bought and tried the Microsoft Surface RT tablet, various Android ones too. Not even close!

FOR THIS ARTWORK Apps I used where:

    - iDraw. An excellent Vector art program - I used this for the layout and design of shapes, images and the shading effects

    - iPhoto. (Photo editing) this I used to remove the sterile feel to the draft image

    - Snapseed. Photo editing) I used this for the stylised border

This is first time I have tried anything like this on the iPad it was great fun and for me very intuitive.

    Regards

    Rod Bailey, Bristol, England.

ROD Thanks again for sending in this artwork and folks you can see ROD'S artwork in the Tii App in the extras for ep 299 or if you subscribe via iTunes on your computer as the album artwork and also as a stand alone post in the VIP section and at Facebook.com/todayinios.

If you have some artwork and or music you have created on your iOS device that you would like to share with the audience please email it to me at today in iOS at gmail dot com and please make sure to include which app or apps you used to create said artwork and or music.

Ok - last year I blew it with the NCAA Tournament bracket - no I am  not talking about my picks - that is a given - I mean about getting one set up for the show.

So this year I set it up early - look for the link in the show notes - but the group name is todayinios - and the password is tii

Please join and remember - you need to submit your picks before Tuesdays first games in Dayton.  So picks must be in prior to lets say 5:00 PM ET on Tuesday the 18th.

Winners of the contest will get free app promo codes when they want them and I will see if I can get anything else donated to give away.  But most importantly - you will get the pride in knowing you won this shows bracket - up to 3 entries per person.

And once again - you must submit prior to 5:00 PM ET on Tuesday the 18th.

    06:12

Ok - now into the news - and it is a good thing I decided not to record last night - because today Apple released iOS 7.1 Finally.

Before you upgrade to iOS 7.1 I always always recommend - one you wait a few days to make sure there are no issues.

    Two follow these directions:

Sync over all your photos you may have taken to iPhoto or whatever you use - you don't want to loose any recent photos.

Next force quit all your open apps

Then sync and back up your iOS device to your computer.

Then go to Settings and Reset and select Reset network settings.

Once your iOS device reboots - rejoin your Wifi network - which if it has a password you need to re-enter.

Then go and do the upgrade.

Following the above steps does seem to make upgrades go better and with fewer issues.

As always if you are a jail breaker - stay away from the update - and really - what does it hurt to stay away until next week to see if there are issues with this update even if you are not a jail breaker.  Don't be in such a rush.  Plus some are reporting looong download times this evening - as the masses are starting to download the update - so now you really are best waiting until next week.

That said for you all - I have upgraded a few of my devices today.

I upgraded the iPhone 4, iPhone 5S and iPad Mini Retina - so far so good with them.  However I could not get the download to work for my 3rd Gen iPad - kept getting a network Error and now it says 6 hours remaining for the download which is what it said over an hour ago.  So yeah - that one may be waiting a bit before it is upgraded to 7.1 - So you might not have any choice but to wait.  Not a good idea to upgrade once things bog down like that. So be patient - wait until the next episode next Monday to hear how things are going.

Per what is new in iOS 7.1 -

well as you know if you have been listening for the past few months - I have been using the beta for a few revs and we have talked about new features - but if you are like me you probably forgot what most if not all of them were.  So I went back into the show notes for past episodes and here are the key highlights of the changes for iOS 7.1

    1. At least for me - iOS 7.1 fixed the issue of crashing and re-booting. so that goes to the top of the list.

    2. There is also improved contrast overall - where you have the option to reduce transparency turning the Dock and folder backgrounds a dark grey - so there are actually two options to chose - one called Reduce Transparency and the other called Darken Colors.  This is under Settings - General - Accessibility - Increase Contrast.  I actually saw a couple of people not liking how the new dock looks - and this is where you change that.  Also under this category new to 7.1 is Reduce White Point. This slightly darkens the screen.

    3. There are some camera updates - There is also a new HDR auto mode.  Which it then looks at all 3 exposures and picks the best one for you.  And if you select HDR now - it remains on the next time you open the camera app.  Even after force quitting the camera app.  Now you can also choose wether or not to upload all your burst mode photos.

    4. Settings for touch ID and passcode have been bumped up to the main menu of the Settings App.  No longer in General.

    5. There is a new option to turn on button shaped in settings -- General and then accessibility.

    6. There are new iPad wallpapers and for all iOS devices that support parallax - There is now a new option to turn on or off Parallax i.e. motion when selecting wallpapers for the iPad.  the option to disable parallax for the iPad Wallpaper is now called Perspective zoom instead of reduce motion - when in the Wallpaper area - but over in Settings - General - Accessibility - yeah there you still turn on Reduce Motion to turn off parallax.  So one place you turn on to turn off and another you turn off to turn off and they are called two different things - Pretty clear to me.  Obviously Apple has been recruiting from the Android ranks again.

    7. The iPad has gained a new Siri Voice gender option for the UK, Australia, Japan and Mandarin.  As is normal with better sounding Siri - you will need for your iOS device to be connected via Wifi and plugged into a power source for it to download the improved siri voice files.

    8.  The Music App also now has new shuffle and repeat buttons that stand out much more.

    9. CarPlay support - more on that later.

    10. With siri - keep holding down the home button while you speak and release when done.

    11. Improvements to Calendars to add a list of items under the month - when you tap on a day.

Other observations from the betas and the release of 7.1 - Animations are noticeably faster.  Hearing that from many that just upgraded. There are a bunch of new animations and buttons in 7.1 from slide to unlock to powering down.  There are also other fit and finish type changes with updates to fonts and text sizes.  There is a redesigned shift and caps lock keys on the keyboard as well.

That said was one thing that went away that was in beta 1 of 7.1 that never came back and that is the option to enable Dark Keyboard.  That was a nice feature and not sure why apple removed it - hopefully it will be back in the future.

Now that is not ALL the changes for iOS 7.1 - just the key ones in my mind - if there are some others I missed you think should have been covered or interesting to you - let me know - 206-666-6364 - 206-moon-dog - or send an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com and speaking of emails Lets go to some of your early feedback on 7.1 so far.

Hi, Rob. Great podcast, but I wish they were more frequent.

Just to let you know, again, that the calendar bug I reported months ago still persists in iOS 7.1:

    - Year 1921 does not exist!

    - Years 1920 and earlier do get their calendars screwed up

Yep, I'm refusing to time travel to witness the first human flight until Apple gets these calendars fixed.

BTW, I reported this bug to Apple, but they never answered back. Is there another way to report this?

    Regards,

    Fabio E

    Hi Rob,

this is new for iOS 7.1. This came up when I plugged my phone into my computer. I get a message that says

QuoteDo you want to allow this computer to access information on Ben's iPhone 5C?  If you don't allow access, you will not be able to manage or sync your iPhone with this computer. unquote

    http://recode.net/2014/02/28/apples-tv-hobby-is-now-a-billion-dollar-business/

And that is some Apple made by saying Apple TV has generated over 1 Billion with a B dollars from Apple TV  in 2013 - so quickly people thought that meant they sold a billion dollars worth of Apple TV's something Apple quickly clarified - NO - it means that the Sales of the Apple TV units COMBINED with purchases people made from them - are greater than 1 Billion dollars.  Also 2013 - does not actually mean Jan 1st to Dec 31st 2013 - but rather Apple fiscal 2013 which ran from beginning of Oct 2012 to the end of September 2013.  So it did not include this past holiday season.

That all clarified - the News really is about Tim Cook saying quote it's a little more difficult to call it a hobby these days" unquote.  This he said at the shareholders meeting.

    17:55

    http://qz.com/182763/apple-tv-is-apples-fastest-growing-product/

Right now it is looking like Apple has sold about 28 Million Apple TVs since the original unit back in 2007 - that compares to about 8 million for Roku it closest competitor in this space.

    18:26

    http://www.geeky-gadgets.com/new-apple-tv-to-feature-games-and-apps-rumor-04-03-2014/

The fact Tim Cook is talking about Apple TV and saying it is no longer a hobby is a pretty good sign we will see a new Apple TV sooner rather than latter - well that and the fact we are way over due for a new device - which means more rumors on the 4th gen Apple TV.   From the Financial times comes this blurb.

quote The significantly redesigned hardware will include greater support for video-games, already a popular pastime on its iPhones and iPads, as well as other new features which could include bringing its App Store to the TV set for the first time.

The release, which was delayed from the end of last year, could come "any week now", this source said. Apple has not commented on the rumors. unquote

Apple also recently had a one week promotion where if you purchased an Apple TV from Apples brick and mortar stores and online at Apple.com - you would get a $25 iTunes gift card.  Clearly that looks like a nice inventory clearing promotion.

So what is coming first - the NCAA Final 4 or a new Apple TV?

Note Jim Dalrymple at the loop recently said this was not an indication of a new Apple TV coming.  But a simple Nope to speculation this means a new Apple TV is coming - leaves a lot to be answered - is that Nope it is not coming when the one week promo is over - or not coming this month or not coming period?  Because well eventually it seems a new Apple TV is coming and why else would Apple offer a promotion for Apple TV if not to clear some inventory - this is Apple we are talking about - how often do they do promotions like this - ummm - answer would be almost never.

Any way I think there is a new Apple TV coming sooner rather than later - and would be shocked if it is not hear before end of May and really surprised if not here by Mid April.

I often get questions about how to learn to create an iOS app - and Lynda dot com has easy to follow high quality Video tutorials on how to program iOS apps - but lets say you don't know Objective C - well they have courses teaching Objective C - but lets say you don't know much or anything about programming - well they have courses that teach the fundamentals of programming too.  For example first you could go through the Foundations of Programming Fundamentals or Maybe this is for your kids - then there is the Foundations of Programming - Programming for Kids.  After you get through that class then you or they are on to the course Objective-C Essential Training - and then when done with those - you are ready for the course iOS App development Essential Training.  And those are just 4 courses out of over 2,000 to choose from which cover not just programming but also Graphic design, and Software use - like Excel or Adobe Creative Suite or Final cut pro,  courses on Business skills like SEO and Project management, Even courses for Photography and Negotiating.  Which combined could lead to an interesting line of work.  Hello TMZ.  AND The great part about lynda.com is that you get access to All the courses - think netflix for training you new skills.  You learn at your pace and your schedule.  And the video courses come with transcripts - that is huge.  I am going to be brushing up on my Objective C and I am going to get my oldest son started on the intro for the Programming for kids.

    http://recode.net/2014/03/02/apples-ios-in-the-car-becomes-carplay

    -due-in-models-later-this-year/

Ok - So Apple TV is no longer a Hobby for Apple and Tim Cook - well you know what they say Everyone needs a Hobby - especially CEO's.  And rather then endurance racing or triathlons - it seems Tim's new Hobby is Cars.  Or more precisely - CarPlay - which Apple just unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show - because someone else in Apple has skiing as a hobby no doubt.  CarPlay is iOS in the Car - that apple talked about at WWDC back in June - so maybe unveiled is not the correct term.

Here is what Apple had to say about CarPlay quote March 3, 2014―Apple® today announced that leading auto manufacturers are rolling out CarPlay, the smarter, safer and more fun way to use iPhone® in the car. CarPlay gives iPhone users an incredibly intuitive way to make calls, use Maps, listen to music and access messages with just a word or a touch. Users can easily control CarPlay from the car’s native interface or just push-and-hold the voice control button on the steering wheel to activate Siri® without distraction. Vehicles from Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo will premiere CarPlay to their drivers this week, while additional auto manufacturers bringing CarPlay to their drivers down the road include BMW Group, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan Motor Company, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota Motor Corp.  unquote

Apple also said quote CarPlay gives drivers access to all of their music, podcasts, audiobooks and iTunes Radioâ„  with easy navigation through listening choices from the car’s built-in controls or simply by asking Siri to pull up what you’d like to hear. CarPlay also supports select third-party audio apps including Spotify and iHeartRadio, so you can listen to your favorite radio services or sports broadcast apps while driving.  unquote

Apple did not mention it in their press release - but Stitcher radio and Beast Music are listed on their website for Carplay was working as well.

It will be later in 2014 before we starts seeing any of these cars made

available and probably 2016 or later before all those mentioned roll this out.  That said - it is a start - and well like I said Tim cook needs a new hobby.  To me automotive interfaces that interact and are driven by your smartphone make more sense than getting another data plan for your car.

    Hi Rob,

I had the same issue which the user in 298 reported about the faded songs on his device. I had tried to download my 1100+ songs from iCloud to my new iPhone 5S and only half of them downloaded, so I went to the Genius Bar, who told me to talk to the Apple support people by phone. After about half an hour, it was discovered that these songs were hidden, though I had not actually hidden them myself: must be something with setting up a new iOS device. Hidden items can be restored through iTunes (click on your login in the store, then "view account," then under the section "iTunes in the Cloud" select "manage" next to "Hidden Purchases") or on iOS (iTunes Store, scroll to bottom, tap on account login, sign in, then tap "Hidden Purchases"). Hope this helps and love the show.

    Hi Rob,

A caller wanted to know what Bluetooth works well with Siri.

I used to have this one http://www.myblueant.com/products/headsets/t1/index.php

What I loved about it was that you can listen to podcasts or music on it, and it does work with Siri and multiple devices. Something to keep in mind though, you must hold the button until it asks you what you want to do, that is the device itself, not Siri. If you tell it phone commands then it immediately launches Siri. Not perfect, but I could listen to podcasts playing on my iPad and if I got a call or a text on my iPhone I would still get them. Read the manual if you set it up because it does matter which device is the first one paired with it.

Hi Rob, this is in response to your request in the last podcast concerning what Bluetooth devices we use to connect to our iOS devices in the car. I tried a few and then stayed with Belkin's AirCast Auto Hands Free.   It was super easy to install. It draws power from the cigarette lighter plug and connects to the cars sound system through the AUX port. My son uses the same device and connects to his car's sound system through a cassette player adapter. I have found the AirCast Auto extremely easy to use for placing and receiving phone calls, for playing music from my music library, and podcasts from my pod cast player and  music from online music players, and for communicating with Siri to do all of the above and even more. I have even dictated iMessages with only a few miscues due to similar sounding words. All-in-all I am very pleased.

This device switches easily between music or podcasts and phone calls and back again when the call is over.

The AirCast Auto lists for $80 on Belkin's website but you can beat that price by shopping around at other online stores.

I can highly recommend the AirCast Auto by Belkin.

We had over 90 posts since the last episode.  Of those most replied to post there was one from Angel Voice that asked a question about upgrading from an iPhone 5 and remembering talk about S phones were the better time to upgrade.  So essentially here is my thoughts on this - the upgrade from the 3G to 3GS - was much bigger than that from the Original to the 3G.  The jump from the 4 to 4S was also more than from the 3GS to the 4.  If you don't count the physical changes - which when the 4 first came out were an issue anyway.  And again the different from the 5 to the 5S was much bigger than the different from the 4S to the 5.  It was very hard for me to recommend anyone upgrade from a 4S to a 5 - but I don't pause to recommend going from a 4S to a 5S.  But if you question is if you should wait a full year after the iPhone 6 comes out for the 6S - well at this time it is impossible to say - past performance / history is not promise for future results. Heck if the iPhone 6 has a sapphire screen and a 4K video recording feature - I am pretty sure I will bite the bullet and upgrade a year early.  But I will not know for sure until Apple announces the next iPhone and that is not likely until some time in early to mid September.

Some other Apple employee news - Apple announced that Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer will retire and hand the reins to Luca Maestri in September - which is when Apples fiscal year ends.  Mr Oppenheimer helped grow Apples cash horde from sub 10 Billion to in excess of 160 billion dollars.  He also balanced the books when revenue went from 8 Billion a year to over 170 Billion.  Guess it is always easy to balance the books when there is more money coming in than going out.  Or at least a lot less stressful - if not easier.  Mr Luca Maestri we look forward to hearing from you on future Apple Quarterly conference calls.

I mentioned Earlier the Tim cook was talking to Investors at Apples Investors meeting and Mr Cook had a great great quote at said Investors meeting - It was:

quote   If you want me to do things only for ROI reasons, you should get out of this stock. unquote

By itself - that is just a great quote - it gets the extra great when put into context - Seems there was some idiot investor fund manager from  NCPPR - they had pushed a proposal requiring Apple to disclose the cost of sustainability programs and be more transparent about its relationships with sustainability groups.  That proposal was squashed like a bug.  But then the guy from NCPPR questioned the effect of Apples sustainability programs on its bottom line and demanded Cook promise to do only things that are profitable - read socially irresponsible.  It is not known if this guy was bald and stroking a white persian cat while saying all this - but it sounds like he could have been.

Anyway Mr Tim then angrily responded with that great great quote -  quote   If you want me to do things only for ROI reasons, you should get out of this stock. unquote

Companies that only focus on the bottom line quickly loose focus on the company and their products and their customers and their future.

Kudos Timothy Donald Cook on keeping some things more important than just the bottom line.

"When we work on making our devices accessible by the blind," he [Tim Cook] said, "I don't consider the bloody ROI." He said that the same thing about environmental issues, worker safety, and other areas where Apple is a leader.

He didn't stop there, however, as he looked directly at the NCPPR representative and said, unquote - well he actually said that great great quote - but now you have even more pretext on it.

Thanks to all that sent in links per this next story - and that is the iPhone 5S price has been dropped at Walmart to $119 for the 16 GB version.   This offer looks to be in place for the rest of March - kind of a march madness event I guess.  Basically the price is now close to where the 5C price was when it launched - yeah if you are looking for a new iPhone right now - the $119 price is pretty nice - that said I would recommend higher storage of at least 32 GB and really the 64 GB is my first recommendation.  It shows the Higher  capacities on line at walmart.com - but it does not show if they are then $229 and $329.  In any case you need to check with your local walmart to get this deal.

Thanks to Cretan for this next one - that compares some bench mark tests for Intels new Z3480 processor - that is their new top of the line mobile processor.  And there should be lots of quotes thrown in that last sentence.  Because top of the line for Intel and mobile - yeah - not so top of the line over all.  The bench mark score for the Z3480 was 1327 - with higher better.  That is just about the A6 processor - yes the one for the iPhone 5.  Not the A7 found in the iPhone 5S which was twice the score of the new Z3480 from intel - yikes.  Which is why you are not likely to see that processor in all to many devices any time soon or at all.

    http://www.macrumors.com/2014/03/05/a8-chip-underway-tsmc/

This leads us into some rumors about the A8 chip the one likely to be powering the next gen iPhones and iPads - likely to launch early fall.  Well in the past Sammy has been building the chips for Apple - but rumors are coming up that this time around the A8 will actually be built by TSMC with their 20 nanometer processing.  And it would be a quad core 64 bit CPU with quad core Graphics processor as well.

Initially it was thought that TSMC and Sammy would split the production of the A8 - but now the rumors are saying it is all TSMC's business.  Mind you last year a very similar rumor was spread just about this time of the year with regards to as then not announced A7 processor - and well that turned out to be a bogus rumor just as this one may also be.

But will be interesting to see what apple has in store for the A8 processor - as yet there is still nothing out there up to par with the A7 processor when it comes to benchmark tests.

    student-hackers-make-apples-ios-7-siri-way-more-useful-spotify-support

Interesting article from Jonny Evans at computer world titled - Student hackers make Apple's iOS 7 Siri way more useful with Spotify support

Essentially four freshman students The university of Pennsylvania have hacked Apple's iOS 7s voice assistant to control third-party apps with Siri without jailbreaking their iPhone.

They were able to show siri turning on and off Hue lights - and playing songs on spotify - which sounds cool - but it is not something you will be able to use now.  As it requires a man in the middle hack - essentially they called their hack google plex - and you would say google plex turn on the lights - and what happens is siri is hearing google as the action and plex turn on the lights - and their hack is to get your phone set up with a spoofed DNS s that requests from siri to search go to their servers and not googles.  So their server gets the request for plex turn off the lights - and it performs the action - while they say this will be used with other apps - it seems - it is just a little to techie for most users.

Cool demo and genius implementation - but I don't see it overly practical - but hopefully Apple sees this and works to  make Siri even more useful and allows in iOS 8 - more control from siri.

Links in the show notes to the article at computer world and also to the site these guys set up - better than siri dot com.

    Hi Rob,

I really like the existing size of the iPhone.  I have an iPhone 5 and will be buying the 6 if it is anything smaller than a Note!  If they made it that big, which I'm sure they won't, I'll get a 5s.  Speaking of Samsung (boooo and hisss), if you watched the Oscars you saw Ellen using a Samsung for all those selfies.  if you look online, you'll see as soon as she went backstage, she went back to her iPhone.  They have to pay celebrities to use their crappy phone!

    Regards,

    Steph in Henderson, NV

Samsung was a major sponsor of The Oscars last week - and it seems that Samsungs sponsor ship was turning it into more an informercial for Samsung with Ellen taking selflies with celebs using a samsung phone - out on stage and in the audience - but once she went back stage - seems Ellen took out the phone she really cared about - her iPhone and took more selflies and posted them on twitter and well it said taken with an iPhone.  Which just slapped Sammy in the face - awe - kind of makes you feel sad for them - or not.

    Hi Rob

I posted this in the Google+ community but I was wondering if any one else has this problem. I have the iPhone 5s that is NOT jailbroken, occasionally when I'm multitasking on my phone switching between apps it will basically crash and restart. It happens probably about once a day,

Hi Chris - I had some restarting issues as well before I went to iOS 7.1 - beta - and since I have been on the beta the issue for me is gone.  So hopefully apple will pull the trigger soon maybe this week for iOS 7.1 for Gold Master release.

    Hi Rob,

Have you've found that someone ask you or yourself, get what did I pay for that app if anything?

You go to look at see either a cloud icon or free even if you paid for it.  It would be nice if apple showed the price but also that you already own it!  Is there a way to know other than having to look way back on your purchase downloads which takes way to long?  Sometimes u can "see" the price for a split second when u search for it in the App Store

    Regards,

    Michael

    VOICEMAIL -  Derrek_Apple_TV_Rearrange_icons

Hi Derrek - Yes I am aware of that - what I was saying was a new Apple TV would give you a list of TV channels i.e. - replace your cable set top box - but rather than it be a linear set of channels stuck in some highly questionable order - you would be able to re-arrange the channels in any order you want - thus grouping all the sports channels together, and pushing others to the bottom of the list. But yes on Apple TV now - for the Tiles they have you can change the order around - move to towards the top the ones you care the most about.

    http://www.dreamjb.com/2014/02/apple-id-2-step-verification-system.html

One of the security features introduced by Apple is 2 step verification - and that system is just available in a few markets - but now it is coming to a few more - Japan, Canada and some European countries.  Actually it has now been made available specifically to Japan, Canada, Italy, Germany, France, and Spain.

The 2 step verification is where you first enter your Apple ID and password as usual.  Then Apple sends a verification code to one of your devices - and you enter that code to verify your identity and complete the sign in.

This is optional by the way

    Hi Rob,

FYI. I raised this issue on your show about touch ID forgetting finger prints. I think people who didn’t experience the issue tended to minimize it. Glad to see Apple has finally admitted the issue and is doing something about it! It’s not been an issue for me since getting my 3rd iPhone 5s!

    Regards,

    Dr. Dave

Hi Dr. Dave - first - this article is just rumor at this point.  Siting a source familiar with Apple - so don't get too excited or happy about Apple doing something - until well Apple actually does something.  In the mean time folks if you have issues with fingerprints not working with touch ID - first make sure reduce motion is turned on - that turns off parallax - that helped a lot of people - and then next it going in and retraining over and over touch ID for your finger prints - for all parts of your finger.

Per Apple helping out - like suggested by a source familiar - well we will need to wait and see on that - Sources familiar is really a bloggers euphemism for I made up this next story based my own speculation - but will try to give it some street cred by saying it came from some unknown source.   Please see The Verge and BGR for how this is done ad-nausium.

I want to take a minute now to talk about today's sponsor.  And that is Hover - if you go to hover.com and use the promo code TIItv one word as a new user you can get 10% off your domain name registrations - that is TIItv

One of the great features of Hover is the ability to quickly and easily create multiple redirects from a single URL for no additional cost.  There is no additional cost to hide the personal info on your domain.  There is no annoying trick you into multiple upsell items you did not want when you use Hover - it is just a good customer friendly interface that is a joy to work with.  So whether you are looking to redirect to your Facebook page or gplus page or twitter or tumblr pages - Hover is there for you to make it easy to tell people where to go to find you on the web.  Like say how I did it with the Google Plus community - by you going to today in iOS dot com slash community

Hover just makes it so easy to create those redirects.

Remember control your namespace - it is the best thing you can do on the web. So as an example you could register your name.com and then set up your name.com /facebook to go to your Facebook page and your name.com / gplus to go your google plus page and so on.   I am a customer and a very happy one of Hover and highly recommend them for your domain name needs.

IF you are a podcaster - you could register a domain and then forward your domain dot com slash feed to your current RSS feed - and then you own your feed.

Remember the promo code TIItv for new users of hover to save 10% on your purchases - that is promo code TIItv

Isn't it time for you to like registering domain names again.  Thanks Hover for supporting this show.

Hi, rob, on the last episode of tii, a listener asked how he could use Siri in the car with buuetooth without siri going over Bluetooth. I have a wavejamr Bluetooth music receiver that i use at home in my iPod docks but it also is advertised as being able to be used in the car. I find it annoying that it gives the behavior the listener is describing, but it does indeed provide that functionality. When you press and hold the home button, siri comes up and you can talk to it and her(or his) response will come through your phone speaker. Heres a link to this little device.

There is a new update to the evasi0n jailbreak - version 1.0.7 - and according to the evaders team the way to find out if you need to update is to search for sslpatch one word in cydia - if it is in there - you do not need to update - if it is not in there - then cydia is not updating for you and you need to update.

This issue is such that you do need to rejailbreak fully - as they can't update automatically those effected - because the issue is the inability to update packages.

And earlier I saw a cult of mac article titled something along the lines of iPhone 5c disappointing sales due to cases

Am I crazy, wasn't the iPhone 5c (this tremendous disappointment) not the 2nd best selling phone on 3 of the 4 major carriers in the US and the 3rd in the other beating Sammy's shiny new device? Maybe you have a how wrong we're they? segment almost current. and Gene Munster, wow, but hey I'm not an "expert"

Expert cynic more like it, but maybe I'm the one that's not getting it, guess we'll see with the next quarter announcement.

    Regards,

    Jason H

Hi Jason - yeah - it always cracks me up when people talk about the great failure the iPhone 5C is - yet it is the number 2 or 3 best selling handset at all major carriers in the US.  Look the iPhone 5C was never meant to sell as well as the 5S - and given the technical differences vs price differences over all - I have no idea why it is selling at all.  But it is and it is selling well very well vs other handsets not called the iPhone 5S.  And it is not like 1. Apple ever said what actual sales are - or 2. Apple said what they expected sales to be.  So yeah - how can anyone know if it is a disappointment to Apple or a amazing success - from Apples point of view.

Hi Rob, I'm a first time writer long time listener. I just purchased the TII app, and used the easy email link. Here are some of my suggestions about photo apps. I use camera+ for shooting and light editing. It syncs all the photos in the lightbox over icloud from iphone to ipad so you can edit on either before saving to your camera roll. For detailed editing, Facetune is a great little app that let's you whiten teeth, smooth blemishes, patch spots, selectively blur areas, highlight details, even re-shape objects. It's great for fine-tuning a photo that's not quite right. Perspective Correct is another app that is great for adjusting the view angle of photos that are slightly off. For collages, the best by far has been Diptic PDQ (which stands for Pretty Dang Quick). It lives up to its name and makes putting multiple photos together very easy and fast.

One highly regarded photo shooting and editing app is VSCO cam. It is nice looking and to use, but once edited the photos seem to have a slightly "washed out" sameness to them. For some moody shots it's great though. One question for the listeners is if they know of any other photo apps that sync a photo editing lightbox through icloud between iDevices.

    Regards,

    Jordan from Massachusetts

Thanks again to our new Advertiser on the show this month and that is lynda dot com - and if you go to lynda dot com slash tii - that is l y n d a dot com slash t i i  - you will get a free 7 day trial.

And don't forget to check out our new Moderated Google Plus community by going to todayinios dot com slash community.

Stick around for the end of the episode today after the music - I have some additional voice mail message with regards to Siri and the Reminders app that did not fit earlier into the show and thought they would go well together at the end of the show.

And that folks is kinda going to do it for us today.
