In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote

” I’ve only been able to play with one for a few minutes, but after seeing Palm’s impressive presentation of its Pre smart phone at the Consumer Electronics Show’s opening day I feel fairly certain the phone could just be the device that gives Apple’s iPhone a run for the money.” unquote

    Gary Krakow, TheStreet.com, 8 Jan 2009

It was funny covering the iPhone back in the day - and how many Analists PREsumed the PRE and Palm were going to take Apple to the Woodshed.  So how did that all work out for Palm - just sayin.

    bricking-ipad-pros-apple-pulls-update-fixes-535667

We mentioned on the last episode iOS 9.3.2 bricking 9.7 inch iPad Pros with the Error 56 message.  And seems Apple was hearing that message from users as well and pulled the 9.3.2 update for just those devices.

    05:35

    http://www.macrumors.com/2016/05/23/apple-

    seeds-first-beta-of-ios-9-3-3/

And this week - Apple released iOS 9.3.3 beta 1 to Devs and then beta testers.  As with most double dot updates - it is mostly about squashing bugs and tweaking performance.  We would assume those tweaks are to improve performance - despite what some blogs may say.

    05:55

    http://appadvice.com/post/apple-tweaks-touch-id-rules-

    with-a-notable-addition/714120

Apple seems to be tweaking the rules for touch ID.  It is now requiring you to use your passcode to unlock your device if it has not been unlocked with touch ID in the last eight hours.

That seems like much too short a window.  That means for many people if you go to bed and then wake up and don’t go right to your iPhone there is a good chance you have to put in your passcode again. I mean unless you are a podcaster - then 8 hours is fine.  It is 2 more than needed.

Actually it is a combo of not having used the passcode in 6 days AND not unlocking in the last 8 hours.  Here is the exact message from Apple.

    quote

The passcode has not been used to unlock the device in the last six days and Touch ID has not unlocked the device in the last eight hours.

    unquote

The other times you need to type in your passcode are:

The device has just been turned on or restarted.

    • The device has not been unlocked for more than 48 hours.

    • The device has received a remote lock command.

    • After five unsuccessful attempts to match a fingerprint.

    • When setting up or enrolling new fingers with Touch ID.

It is believed the quote new unquote 6 days of unlocking with touch ID followed by 8 hours of not feature - was added to help protect users who might be forced by local governments to unlock their device against their will.  I said quote new unquote - because according to Mac World - this new feature was actually put in place when iOS 9 first launched in September - just no one really reported on it until now.

    what-to-do-when-your-ipad-pro-s-apple-pencil-stops-working.html

There was an article from Johnny evans at computer world about what to do if you have issues with your Apple pencil not working.

    In one part he wrote

    quote

When it works, it’s great, but for some reason the Bluetooth pairing between your iPad Pro and your Apple Pencil isn’t quite as robust as you might like. If your iPad Pro restarts you may need to re-pair the Pencil, for example. Apple Pencil doesn’t hold onto power very long – in my experience I’ve usually had to charge it up after not using it for a few days.

    unquote

That is very different from my experience - I have never had to repair it - knock on wood - since I received it back in the fall.  Not once beyond the initial pairing.

Per it needing recharging at best once every two weeks - at worst 10 days between charging and seeing the message you are at 5% battery life.  Maybe he uses it ALL the time or he just has a faulty Apple Pencil.

If you have an Apple Pencil - what has been your experience with it?

If you are having issues - you may want to check out Johnny’s article as it goes over what to do if you are having issues.

Again for me it has been rock solid.

    09:24

Let me tell you about my Apple Store experience last week.

I have a MacBook Pro that was causing me issues. It was right after I tried upgrading to El Capitan.  I thought I did something wrong in the update - any way long story short I finally realize it was actually a Graphic board issue - and find out that Apple actually has it covered under a warranty.  So I bring it in to the Apple Store - the connect it and run some test confirm it is the Graphics board - tell me it will likely be 5 days or more to get it repaired.  3 days later they call back and say it is ready.  When I go to pick it up they tell me beyond the Graphics board it also had a Dead 3rd party Battery in it - the DVD  drive is broke,  The MagSafe control board is dead.  And the quote clutch barrel is damaged that is the back hinge - and they all needed to be replaced.  Mind you the only thing covered under the special warranty is the Graphics board.  But they replaced all those other items - including the 3rd party battery for free for my 2011 Mac Book Pro - yes my 5+ year old laptop which is now my Son's had all those repairs by Apple for ZERO dollars.  Nothing Zip Nada - Man I love Apple.  And that is a big Reason I have been an Apple fan boy all these year.  And my oldest son is sooooo happy to have almost a brand new 5+ year old Laptop.

    Ok - switching gears:

    Hi rob,

FYI, iTunes 12.4 is a disaster for screen reader users.

It makes the lists of apps, music, etc. useless.

Several people have reported this on the VIPhone users list. At least, Windows screen reader users, not sure about Mac users.

I have not updated to iTunes 12.4 because of this.

    Regards,

    Richard

And I read that because I am not an unreasonable fan boy.  Richard - I find iTunes 12.4 also to be a massive resource hog - causing my fan to kick on quite often - I no longer leave iTunes open all the time - I

    Quote

I haven't decided what to think about Opera VPN yet. The one thing I really like about it over ProXPN is that it automatically reconnects. With ProXPN if you are on a questionable network and your signal drops even momentarily it will just disconnect and not attempt to reconnect. With Opera VPN it quickly reconnects.

Does anybody know, is Opera VPN as secure as ProXPN? Is it basically doing the same thing and anonymizing the data, thus protecting from hackers while on an open network in the same way? If so, I don't see how any of the third party VPN products will survive long when everybody has access to a free solution that works better.

A couple of others thing about Opera VPN. First, my work network doesn't seem to like it very well so I have a difficult time accessing anything when Opera VPN is enabled.

Second, if you are a T-Mobile user you wouldn't want to use any VPN client when you are on LTE. If you do, they won't be able to detect that you are streaming video or data and you will use data when normally Binge On would make it not count against your plan.

It seems that although they protect your data from other prying eyes, they retain the right to use your data for marketing purposes. This is not end-to-end encryption. It is instead routing everything through a server that seems to be reading about your interests just as Google does.

I  used to have ProXPN but in both iOS 8 & 9 it was buggy and would disconnect frequently for me. Also, I would switch on VPN in settings and it would try to connect but fail; a second try each time was successful. I jumped over to a trial of Cloak last month and loved it! Auto connect options, no annoying bugs like I had been experiencing so it was great. They have a free trial too.

We have a new Sponsor - and it is an App and a custom Tailor - all wrapped up into one.  It is MTailor - M T A I L O R.

This is really cool - it is an iOS and Android App that uses the Camera to take your measurements.  You simply lean the camera up against the wall - and get it at the correct angle which is really easy with their level - and then you stand back and get your full body into this little outline and with arms bent and up - you spin in a circle - and it measures films you going in a circle and that video is used by them to figure your exact measurements.  I did this and had a custom tailored shirt made for me and my wife looked at the fit and was simply blown away - she could not believe how accurate it was.  I have long arms and this is my only shirt that fits correctly.  You even have a choice when going through the process of picking a shirt - to pick which wrist you wear your watch - so there is a little more room on my right sleeve for my Apple Watch.  Brilliant.

They have shirts, pants, blazers and Suits available for complete custom builds. The Shirts start at $69 but if you download the free App called - MTailor - M T A I L O R - and use the promo code tii in the app you will save $15 off your order.  The shirts again are built with premium fabrics and constructed from the ground up to your exact specifications.  And there are many different colors and patterns and fabrics to choose from.  Well over 50 different shirts to choose from.

Pricing on the shirts is either $69 or $89 - and shipping is free to the US and Canada.  And again you can save $15 with promo code tii

Of course if you are not 100% satisfied - you can return it no hassles - no questions.  And they will remake it for free or refund your money.

It really was fun designing my shirt - picking my fabric, collar, cuff, fit and tuck. And my wife again just could not believe how good the shirt fit - her words were WOW.

You can quickly get your self measured in the privacy of your home - it is 20% more accurate than a professional tailor and you can have it shipped right to your do.  Convenience, privacy and an exact fit.

To get your own custom made shirts or pants or Blazzers or Suits - download the free MTAILOR app and use promo code tii to save $15 off your first order.

    https://googleblog.blogspot.com/2016/05/allo-

    duo-apps-messaging-video.html

At Google I/O - Googles version of WWDC - they announced two new apps - Allo and Duo - the first is a smart Messaging App - and the second is a Video Calling App.  Both are going to be available for iOS and Android.

The one big feature for Allo seems to be the predictive suggested replies.  Kind of like what you see on the Apple watch when you get a text message - you get some can’d replies to tap on - except it seems these suggested replies are more based on what was in the initial text message.

The Duo app is a one to one video calling app - the key feature they are touting is something called knock knock - which lets the person you are calling - see live video of you before they answer.  So make sure you look good before using the app to call someone - because if you look not so good - they might now want to answer said call.  I can’t possibly imagine people forgetting about this feature - and then getting busted doing something they should not have been prior to the call being answered. Nope not funny stories or sad stories are ever going to come from that feature.

Right now according the Google Blog post for these apps - both will be available this summer.

BGR had a post on the First look at a real iPhone 7 - and as expected with BGR and rumors - yeah not so good - ever.

This one showed a picture of the supposed iPhone 7 - not only was the headphone jack gone - expected - it also had stereo speakers - expected as well - and one thing that was also gone - the Lightening port - not expected at all - and why this myth is busted.

I only mention this because so many sent in links on this.  NO NO NO - BGR does not have a good or even moderately bad record with rumors - they have a Digitimes horrible - batting almost ZERO % record for Rumors with regards to the iPhone.

Do not worry about rumors from Either Digitimes or BGR - ever.

    http://www.portableone.com/Tech-News/Apple-Watch-S-

    might-be-in-the-cards-for-this-year-with-major-2017-update

Ming-Chi Kuo is predicting that the new Apple Watch - Apple Watch 2 - will be really the same as the current Apple Watch dimension wise but with some under the hood improvements - but still over all not much of a change.

But in 2017 Ming sees an Apple Watch S to hit the market with a brand new design for the casing and much improved hardware specs.

But over all this year if there is an Apple Watch 2 - it will be a slight improvement over the current Apple watch - and not anything that would cause any current Apple Watch owners to want to upgrade.

Another rumor making the rounds this week is that Apple plans on releasing an Amazon Echo competitor.  And Apple will open up Siri with SDK.

We will not have long to wait according to the rumor - this would be announced at WWDC in June.

Said device is not just about asking Siri to look up the names of the 4 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or what time it is - or what the score of the game is - but also to be that central control hub for HomeKit.

But my questions is this - why do people need this if Hey S I R I is working on the current gen iPhones.

Well need to try and remember this one for WWDC Bingo card.

From Myron Uecker in the G+ community.

quote I wanted to clarify something that was said, I think on the last episode. Rob said that updating an app via iTunes will install the larger version downloaded via iTunes, where updating OTA will install the "thinned" version. Is iTunes not capable of repackaging the app so that it only installs the necessary resources for the device?

I have restored devices via iTunes quite often and each time let iTunes re-install the apps. Does that mean I would have a lot more available storage if I deleted and reinstalled my apps, or restored from iCloud and allowed all apps to install OTA? That seems like a waste of time. unquote

Myron - GREAT QUESTION - especially for all those 16 to small GB storage iOS devices out there.

So I did a little experiment - I took three apps I had downloaded to iTunes - but had not installed yet on my iPhone and I sync’d them over.

    The apps were.

Messenger from Facebook - which showed on the computer at 111.8 MB and it was the same on my iPhone.

Streamago App - 58.2 MB on computer and iPhone

    and

Duet Display which I really am playing with on my iPad Pro - but that is for a future episode review.  But on computer and iPhone it was 10.4 MB.

Then I deleted all three - and did an OTA download of all three direct to the iPhone.

Messenger went from 111.8 MB when syncd over to just 79.2 MB when done via OTA.

Streamago went from 58.2 MB to 41 MB

and Duet Display went from 10.4 MB to 7.7 MB

So Myron YES ABSOLUTElY if you want to save space on your iOS device - you want to do the OTA downloads and not sync from your computer and the iTunes app downloads.

Again great question and it was fun seeing that is a great way for those with the 16 what was I thinking GB iOS devices to save some much much needed storage space.  Basically it will save you at least 20% of App storage space if not more.

    Hi Rob,

I just finished listening to your latest podcast (episode 392) where you discuss the new Google keyboard for iOS (GBoard).  I have a few concerns I hope you can answer and/or share with the listeners.

We know Google is the producer of the Android operating system.  We know Android is not particularly adept at security, including malware in the Google Play store, and other security vulnerabilities.  We know that Google is the creator of the GBoard app for iOS.  Therefore, doesn’t it follow that since Google makes (insecure) Android, and Google made GBoard, then the GBoard app would be insecure?  In particular, when the app asks for “Full Access”, (as all keyboard apps require), what are the risks of using a Google keyboard on an iPhone?  Especially this keyboard since it allows you to search Google from directly within the keyboard?   Doesn’t the “full access” allow GBoard to log your keystrokes, search words, or any information you may text, email, etc., from our iPhones?  Would we not be safer if we just used the stock iOS keyboard instead of GBoard?  I’d like to try third party keyboards, but GBoard in particular scares me because of Google’s past policies on selling user information, which they may be collecting through their new GBoard application.

Appreciate your insight on thoughts on this.

    Cheers,

    Mike

    2-time-2-and-core-an-entirely-new-3g-ultra

This week for Kickstarter - the could only be one choice - The Pebble 2 Kickstarter page.  Well actually it is for the Pebble 2, Time 2 and Pebble Core.

They had a goal of $1 Million dollars and they have raised over $7.5 million and you have until June 30th at 12:00 AM CT to get in on these devices.

I should point out it seems strange the timing right before WWDC - Maybe Pebble wants to get this out there prior to people seeing the new Apple watch - if there is a new Apple Watch.

    Per the three devices.

The Pebble 2 is a smartwatch with black and white display - like the original Pebble.  Pricing starts at $99 for the Pebble 2.

The Time 2 - has a 53% larger screen than the Pebble 2 - and it is a color screen.   Pricing for it starts at $169

Finally there is the Pebble Core.  It is a device for tracking the distance you walked or ran.  An emergence SOS with location.  You can stream spotify while on the go and even make voice notes.  And it has an SDK - that they want you to go out and hack for it.  Pricing for it starts at $69.

Hey Rob, continue to love the show.

I wanted to tell people about a problem I had with the app Interact.

This app allows you to create email groups, a feature which has been missing from IOS and something I wanted.

Perhaps because I did something wrong, I hit the done message after a group message was created and all of my contacts went away.

I did something, don't ask because I have no idea what I did, but got them back once.

The next time this happened, I got them back by checking my i-Cloud settings and was able to bring them back.

The problem may be with me, not the app, but, I am not sure.

I have a question as well.

Where can I find information about creating function keys on the smart keyboard for my 9.7 inch i-Pad pro?

Many keyboard functions require function keys which this keyboard lacks.

    Any work-arounds?

    Thanks as ever,

    Jan Brown

    Hi Rob,

Recently Apple pushed the latest update to my phone @ midnight, & bricked my phone.

Tried to restore the phone in recovery mode, no joy, got a error message first time during a restore.

Then from that point my phone would not be recognised by my laptop or show anything on screen at all.

Booked in to see Apple, I was 8 months out of warranty. I expected to get a price for repair. I told them the the phone died during the last update, explained I purchased the phone myself, & they just give me another iPhone 6 (128gb) for free.

No drama, no hassle, very impressed.

    Regards

    Ryu

    Hello Rob,

I know this topic has been discussed a bunch when going overseas but I've never really listened much as I have never travelled there.

However we are going on a cruise for the first time to Belize, Cozumel, etc. and was wondering what is the best options for phone calls and internet service while cruising and in port.

Both me and my wife need it.  We currently have AT&T.  We don't need netflix or anything but do need general internet surfing, texting and phone calls.

Any help or guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Don from Guntersville, AL here.

Hi Don - per the last time we talked Cruise ship and Apps - that was back on Eps 378 / 379 - some answers to the question at that time start around 20 minutes in on Ep 379

But what you will find that was not the same question you had.  They were looking for apps to message to each other.

Your question is more along the lines of best roaming plans for Cruise ships - and I think you will find once out to see - you are stuck with the Cruiseships own service - but when you get to ports - then you will want to look at roaming services.  So this really is a much different question then that from late last year.  As such - if anyone has been doing cruises - especially to Belize and / or Cozumel and that general area - let us know what you suggest for Don - give us a call - 206-666-6364 - that is 206-moon-dog or send an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com.

“But when it comes right down to it, the BlackBerry Storm will be the superior mobile device and represents a true iPhone killer. Here are a few reasons why:

    1. It has a better camera.

    2. BlackBerry set the gold standard for corporate e-mail.

    3. BlackBerry offers easy access to view and edit corporate documents.

    4. The Storm’s touch screen is “clickable.”

    apple-releases-ios-9.3.2-for-

    iphone-ipad.html

We have been talking about it for a few weeks - and now the double dot update iOS 9.3.2 has been released to the public.

The key changes with iOS 9.3.2

Squashes bug with audio problems for bluetooth devices pairing with the SE

Squashes bug with looking up dictionary definitions

Squashes bug the prevented typing email addresses when using Japanes Kana Keyboard in Mail and Messages apps.

Squashes bug for Voiceover users using Alex Voice where it would switch to a different voice to say punctuation.

Squashes bug that prevent MDM servers from installing custom B2B apps.

Squashes and on going bug with GameCenter where it was un-useable for some players.

And on the addition side - Users are able to use Night Shift Mode while in Low Power Mode.

As always do wait a week or really until the next ep of Tii before updating to make sure there are not any unforeseen issues.

And if you are a jailbreaker - I think by now it goes with out saying hold off on updating if you want to you know still be a jailbreaker.

In addition to iOS 9.3.2 - there is also updates for Watch OS 2.2.1 and tvOS 9.2.1

But back to iOS 9.3.2 and why you should wait until the next episode to update - even for a double dot update that had 4 betas.  Well there are some reports out there now of iOS 9.3.2 bricking 9.7 inch iPad Pro’s although some articles just say iPad Pro’s - either way I am not updating my iPad Pro any time soon.

They are reporting Error 56.   According to Apple’s support docs this seems to be a hardware problem and recommend the following:

    1. Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes.
    2. Check for issues with third-party security software.
    3. Make sure that your USB cable, computer, and network are reliable. Then try twice more to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod.
    4. If you still see the error message, you can check for outdated or modified software or contact Apple support.

    5. Or Just wait to update like Rob at Tii always says.

So Right now if you own an iPad Pro or are jailbreaking - you really really really do NOT want to update.  And for everyone else I say be patient.

I will say I did update my iPhone 6+ and so far no issues. And I will be updating my other iOS devices that are not the iPad Pro this week as well.

More on this I am sure on the next episode.

PLAY HOW WRONG WERE THEY MUSIC.

On the last episode I said the following with regards to Apple Music deleting ripped music from a persons computer

    quote

that is not how Apple music works - it does not actually delete original music from your computer that you had prior to signing up - Kirk McElhearn from Mac World has a nice article going over this in detail - but long of the short - Apple Music will pull copies into the cloud and will convert them to AAC in the cloud - but it will not repeat not delete them from your computer.  Not your originally ripped files.  Yes it will remove what it puts on from the Apple Music subscription - but that is not your original non-DRM music.

Yes the person who wrote that blog had his files somehow deleted - but it was almost certainly not Apple Music that did the deleting.

    unquote

Kirk was wrong - I was wrong.  Because well Apple says ooppps - looks like a bug in itunes might actually you know be deleting users music libraries after all.

Apple Confirmed to iMore that it is working on a patch to iTunes to fix the issue. Apple Acknowledged that quote an extremely small number unquote of customers were having their libraries disappear without their permission.

Said patch is in the latest version of iTunes v12.4 that was released this week.  Which if you are a Apple Music user you do want to update to ASAP.

Apple also sent out two engineers to the house of the person that originally wrote the blog post on this to try and duplicate the issue.

And Apple did also confirm - that the deletion is a bug not how the feature is supposed to work - like the Apple support person originally said.

    article/3071617/apple-mac/12-

    things-apple-just-changed-

    in-itunes-12-4.html

I mentioned the new version of iTunes - it is a single dot update bringing iTunes to v12.4

But before saying what it added - if you are a podcaster here is one thing that went away - the ability to right click on an audio file and covert to MP3.  You can still convert to MP3 - so if you are like me and do a share to iTunes from Garageband uncompressed and then convert to MP3 in iTunes - what you need to do now - is select the AIF file in your music library as before - and go to the menu at the top to File and then Create New Version and then Create MP3 Version.  Still can convert - just a little hidden - Thanks Apple.

One of the things you will also notice right away if you manage podcasts on iTunes is how everything looks a lot different.

But you can change it back to the old - hey this is what I am used to look.   First thing is to change the sort by list to by Name - then under View - select View As - and then select Classic list - and ah the feeling of the familiar.  Change - we don’t need no sticking change.

There are a bunch of UI changes including better controls to move back and forward in iTunes.

Also better controls - the Play and FF and RWD controls are at the Upper left - and in the upper center is more info on that episode - including Episode Artwork - finally right from the feed.  So nice to see all of your individual artwork everyone has sent in.

There is an article from Johnny Evans that goes over 12 things that changed with iTunes 12.4  - They include Better Browsing in iTunes, Up Next is better, Easier to Heart something you love,  and more changes.  Check out the link to the article in the show notes for Ep 392.

There was also some sort of Glitch - because on Wednesday morning - for a little while Today in iOS was in the Top 5 Podcasts Overall In Canada.  So Viva La Canada.

There were some Comments in the Google+ community about iTunes 12.4.

    Blair Jones wrote

    quote

    iTunes 12.4 - Windows 7 - menu problem

The latest update seems to have taken away (or hidden well) the option to show the various media-tabs bar -- the one under the menu (file, view, etc) bar.

Is there a way to get it back? searching help & Apple support just tells me how to get the menu bar to show.

It is so much easier to click on a choice (music, video, apps...) on a menu-type bar than to open a drop-down menu or remember Yet Another Set of Keyboard Shortcuts.

There is such a thing as too minimalist (though Apple does not appear to share this view).

    unquote

I don’t have a Windows machine to help out - but if someone can help Blair - give us a call 206-666-6364 - that is 206-moon-dog - or send an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com.

Gary - good news per earlier - you can change back the look to the old look.  First thing is to change the sort by list to by Name - then under View - select View As - and then select Classic list.  And you can join me in enjoying that classic old look - those kids these days with then new fangled podcast layouts - what is this world coming to.

Apple had a big Press release this week.  How do we know it was big - because Tim Cook was quoted in it.

The title of the PR was quote  Apple Announces New iOS App Design and Development Accelerator in Bengaluru

    unquote

From the PR quote Apple® today announced a new initiative to support engineering talent and accelerate growth in India’s iOS developer community. unquote

    And from Tim Cook

    quote

“India is home to one of the most vibrant and entrepreneurial iOS development communities in the world, With the opening of this new facility in Bengaluru, we’re giving developers access to tools which will help them create innovative apps for customers around the world.”

    unquote

Apple has been trying to raise market share of iPhones in India and recently Apples plans to bring in refurbished iPhones to India - shall we say hit a roadblock or brick wall or Politics.  And I am sure this announcement has nothing to do with that at all.

Per Bengaluru - the PR states it is the home to more tech startups than any other part of India and has over 1 Million people in the city that work in the tech sector.

I want to Thank Boll and Branch for sponsoring this episode.

The sheets from Boll and Branch are made from 100% organic cotton - because organic cotton is incredibly soft.  And the sheets get softer each time you wash them.

With Boll and Branch You’ll get the nicest sheets you’ve ever owned for about half the price of what stores and boutiques would be charging for sheets of far lower quality.  I really could not believe how excited my wife was to get these new sheets.  And the box they came in and the individual pouches for the sheets and pillow cases - well the presentation was incredible and very Apple-Esq

Go to Boll and Branch Dot Com today for 20% off your entire order.  And use promo code TII.

Again that is Boll and Branch Dot Com.  Promo code TII.

These sheets are only sold online at boll and branch dot com - you can’t buy them in any stores.  That is how they keep the pricing low and free of markups.

    Hi Rob,

If you had to guess today - would you think the Apple Watch 2 will have the same interchangeable watch bands as the current Apple Watch??

    Thank you!

    Robin

    Macomb, MI

    Hi Robin,

I would be shocked if they changed the connector for the watch bands.

Given the cost of some them $690 for the Herme’s cuff band for example - they almost HAVE to make it interchangeable from one generation to the next and so on for Apple Watch’s

Does that mean they will not change it - NO.  It just means they should not and likely will not change it - at least not for quite some time to come.

Right now Apple is trying hard to get the Apple Watch to take off - and the bad press for selling a $500 or more watch band that could not be used on the 2nd gen Apple watch would really hurt them PR wise.

    taper-off-according-idc/

I love the title of this next one and by Love I mean roll my eyes.  And this one is titled - Apple Watch Sales Taper off - according to IDC.

And the gist of the article and prepare for a shocker here - Apple Watch Sales dropped in the quarter after Christmas.  YOU THINK.

Now how much of a drop - that is 100% a guess from anyone - except Apple and Apple ain’t saying.  But IDC somehow has a magic ball and it says Apple sold 4.1 Million Apple watches in the 4th quarter of 2015 but only 1.5 Mil in Q1 of 2016.

And with out any real numbers to work with IDC said Apple did sell more Apple Watches last quarter than anyone else.  Oh the fun you can have with nonexistent numbers.

One Rumor that came out recently is that Apple will at long last be killing off the 16 to small GB option - and replacing it with the 32 barely enough GB option for the next iPhone - actually the storage options would all double and the offerings would be 32, 128 and 256 for the options.

If that is the case - I would then highly recommend the 128 just right for 4K video GB option.  256 GB is great for new parents.

If this rumor is true - then all I can say is it is about time.

    2016-5-probably-accurate-apple-

One site had an article - WWDC 2016 - 5 probably accurate Apple Watch 2 predictions.

The first is one we mentioned before - where it will be Thinner. 40% thinner - yes because they sooooo nailed battery life with the current unit.

2 - It will be Faster - because yes again - nothing screams a faster processor then a thinner watch with a smaller battery.

3 - It will have Improved Battery Life because items 1 and 2 get negated by the magic fairy dust the will mention in item 4.

4 - Built-in Embedded Sim card - hmmm - not fairy dust. Well I am sure adding cellular connectivity to the thinner / faster device will help battery life a whole bunch.

and 5 - More models.  What so they can compete with Swatch maybe?

Any way it is possible an Apple Watch 2 will be announced at WWDC - but the rumors of thinner - faster and with cellular connection - don’t seem at all to fly with improved battery life.

We shall see in a few weeks.

Per the next Gen iPhone - additional rumors are coming out that it will have a dual camera on the back.  but look a lot like the current 6 series - except for the missing headphone jack.

Now the dual camera is only being shown in quote leaked factory designs unquote for the Plus size - with just one camera for the non plus size.

Interesting - another rumor of late says that production for the next gen iPhones are already under way - and they started earlier this year because it is more complex to build.

Hmmm - but if the design is basically the same - you would think they would have the production issues worked out.  Maybe - just maybe the next gen iPhone has a lot more differences than current leaks suggest.

And this is per the New that MCX that runs CurrentC has pushed out its national rollout pretty much indefinitely and would lay off 30 people and is pivoting and will focus on partnerships with Banks - huh????

Aric - here is what I said the first time talking about CurrentC back on Ep 326 in October 2014.

quote  CurrentC benefits one group -  The retailers.  There is no benefit for the consumers, it is not as secure and works with your checking account - and is really really convoluted to use.

At the end of the day - CurrentC - will not even get a C grade - It will be CurrentF.  This will not take off - it will be a horrible failure  unquote

When I first researched CurrentC back in 2014 It just sounded like dead man walking.  To intrusive - required too much person info - was connected to your checking account - which is never good - and it did get hacked later on and had a bunch of personal info stollen.

That only real questions is why did it take so long for them to put the stake in it.

Having briefly used an Android phone I'd best describe it as a burgled house: very easy to break into but you've absolutely no idea where anything is - it's just a depressing mess.

Actually I've been thinking for a while there should be an Android bashing segment - and invite the most creative submissions, for example, bashing an Android device using a golf club, dropping a car on it etc etc.

Back to the Google+ community - Patrick Lim asked

    quote

I have just upgraded my iCloud storage to the 50Gb. Can I share the storage space with my wife's iPhone or her own account?

    unquote

And Sean Casey had the following reply

    quote

Yes, you can share the iCloud backup storage IF she is signed into iCloud on her devices with the same Apple ID that you use on yours (the one with the extra storage). She still needs to be signed into iMessage and FaceTime with her own Apple ID, but as far as iCloud is concerned if she uses yours then she can take advantage of the extra backup storage space along with you.

She will sign out of her Apple ID in her iCloud settings and sign in with Your iCloud Apple ID in that location (only).

Be aware that doing what I suggested above will lump all of your contacts together unless one of you has 'iCloud contacts' toggled to off. There are many ways that folks keep their contacts backed up (I.e. through Google, etc), but if you both have iCloud contacts toggled on and are logged in with the same iCloud acct., your contacts will all be available to each of you, unless one of you turns that setting off.

    tripod?ref=discovery

This week for a Kickstarter project we have the Pocket Tripod - the only iphone tripod you need

quote A tripod that works with Android and iPhone cases. The Pocket Tripod is a card-size tripod for your phone that can adjust to any angle. unquote.

This project had a goal of $6k - and has raised over $28k - congrats.  You have until July 4th at 10:59 PM CT to fund this one.

Pricing is $18 and will ship in October.

So what is so special about the Pocket Tripod - it folds down flat and is the size of a credit card and can fit in your wallet.

This company did launch one a couple of years ago - but this time they added a special feature where you can have different adapters to meet the exact size opening you need.

That $18 is for one size - add $2 for each additional size.  They are trying to offer everything from 5.5 MM to 12.5 MM.

The idea is you pick the size you need for your iPhone and the case you have on it.

The real beauty of this is as they say - what good is a real expensive tri-pod if you don’t have it with you.  This goes in your wallet or purse and is always with you.

    2016/05/13/google-launches-

    ios-gboard/

Google launched GBoard for iOS and the feedback has been pretty positive.

In short it adds search to your keyboard - regardless of the app you are in.  Say you are in message app - you hit the Google icon in the keyboard - in the keyboard it allows you to search without leaving the message app - you find the answer - like the number to the school - or the address to the ice cream parlor and you can share right from the keyboard.

Here is some comments from our G+ community.

    Jack Reeder said quote

I have to say I'm loving Gboard. I deleted all other keyboards so I could quickly switch between stock and Gboard.

Now when I want to dictate or want keyboard shortcuts I tap the globe once. When I want to swipe tap it again. The Swype menu sucked because you had to hold the button, wait for the menu, then you could only go to the next keyboard. Too slow so I stopped using Swype. Now I can switch fast between keyboards.

My ideal keyboard would be the stock keyboard with swiping, emoji and Swype-like shortcuts for punctuation. This way I would not need a third party app and it would be secure.

One awesome feature of Swype was swiping down on z or m invoked the ! or ? This is another feature that greatly speeds up typing.

    Barry Smitherman replied

    quote

I agree! Gboard is the only 3rd party keyboard I've liked. The built in search is great. And, if you like using emojis, Gboard has a feature that I think the stock keyboard has lacked for a long time. That's the ability to search emojis. It even suggests emojis based on what you type. I like the built in gif search too. Swipe typing, or whatever they call it is pretty nice too.

    and Danielle Saul said

    Dr. John M

And this is per an article at the next web titled - You already own the only Apple headphone case you’ll ever need. unquote

What the article is saying is when you get an new iphone your headphones originally come wrapped around a plastic body in a case.  You can simply pop that center body out - and now you have the perfect size case.

And yes it is pretty easy to pop it out.

Which is easier to throw them in - then trying to re-wrap them the way they came.

The down side - is when you do use the case with out the center item - the headphones tend to knot up like they were in your pocket.

    unquote

    And I replied

The value in them is not just what they are - but what they are not. I love them because it feels like the phone is naked - but it is not it is protected from drops. My Phone fits better in my pocket and it looks great. I have turned down more than few cases to review because I don't want to remove them.

In the last week - I had my iPhone 6S fall out of my pocket when I opened the car and bounce out on the street,  I dropped it twice on the drive way and fell off the high counter.  No damage at all in any of those drops - all of which with out a case could have and likely would have resulted in a shattered screen.  Especially the one out of the Car it landed face first and then bounced away from the car.

And they are only $30 - which is again a really good price for the protection they give and the bulk they do not have.  It really looks and feels like the phone is naked - but it is not.

    35:44

    Hey rob

I am planning on buying an iPhone 4 but I had a question. How much should I pay for it the screen is shattered and I don't know if the glass on the back is cracked or not but I work at a phone repair place and my boss said he is going to teach me how to repair screens so that might not be such a big problem but I also wanted to know if it is slow on iOS 7.1.2.

And what is the most I should pay.

    REGARDS,

    Zach

$20 - that is it.  A broken screen iPhone 4 is not really worth much other than for parts. Really if you get the screen repaired - it is not bad as an iPod for music and a game machine for some games.  And yes it is a good device to learn how to change a screen on - but it will take a little bit of time - you have to take it all apart.

    Hi Rob,

Can you help me here? I have an LG HBS900 Bluetooth device and an iPhone 6s Plus. The device is always on, so is my phone. Recently when I have done Google searches I can hear the Bluetooth sound as thought I'm initiating a call. When I close the google page, Bluetooth says "call ended". This is extremely annoying and rather disconcerting, as this is a new problem. Also, when listening to voicemail I'll get a string of "call endeds" prior to the actual voicemail beginning to play. Any ideas? Thanks much!

    Regards,

    - Judy

This is what I would do when trouble shooting a bluetooth head set issue.

    1. Un-Pair  - power off the head sets - and repower on and re-pair.

    2. If step 1 did not work - then force quit all apps on the iOS device - go to Settings - General  - Reset - and up you guessed it - resent network settings - Then repeat step 1 - un-pair -  power off the head set and repower and repair the head set.

    3. If steps 1 and 2 did not work - contact LG.

Let us know how this goes for you.

    Hi Rob,

There's a way now to set up a "soft" button on your iPhone screen that replaces the home button.  I just discovered it in the latest public beta of 9.3.2 but there's a very good chance it's been there for a long time.

    Here's how:

Go to Settings -> General ->  Accessibility

    Click "Assitive Touch"

    Activate Assistive Touch

    Click "Customize Top Level Menu"

Click the "minus" button on the bottom to reduce the set of icons to just ONE

Tap the remaining Icon and select "Home" as its function

    ----------------

(This is useful for anyone with a tempermental home button, but I find it easier to press the soft button in most cases anyway.  And less wear and tear on my device!)

Now you can move the soft icon down to the bottom of your screen just above the physical home button, and it works just the same - double clicks and all!

And for iPhone 6(s) Plus users - it also puts the home button at the bottom of your screen in landscape mode (Settings->Display Zoom-> Standard View), which is real handy if you like to keep it docked horizonally on your desk or car mount.

    Regards,

    Rob from Boston

    Hi Rob,

You know, google IO has them buzzing all the more, but the google

worshipers are so selfish and heck bent on Apple misrepresentation

that they just prove themselves stupid and advertise it to the entire

world constantly. They try and try and try to tell us that the IPhone

is no longer even a modern device and has lost its way from anything

current and push their montra about how the IPhone doesn't do anything

useful. I am visually impaired and find my IPhone incredibly

functional on a daily basis. Android accessibility just goes on and on

being completely out of touch. It continues to exist missing large

amounts of functionality and other functionality just doesn't work

even if it is said to be there. It only reads random web views, it

doesn't work with them well even when it does and others it just

reports a blank screen, even in google now! I do not currently own an

Android device, but regularly play with them just to check in and see

if they are still unbelievably out of touch. One can only navigate

edit boxes that have a small amount of text, otherwise you have to

touch it, hope it doesn't crash when you do, and the best it will do

is read you the entire thing, maybe pages, with no control over it.

Does that sound functional to you? But in the bigger picture, the

google and Android worshipers seem to lust after their dream world

where google rains supreme with no competition. They don't even see

they ddream of a world where google is like the DMV and other

government agencies. How is it that they really think all the rules

will be different and a world where google rules will be a wonderful

world that is all about the user?

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote

“The iPhone is a niche product.” unquote

    Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, 17 April 2008

So reading that I thought maybe Niche meant something else - so I looked it up at dictionary dot com and their definition for Niche is - 1. quote an ornamental recess in a wall or the like, usually semicircular in plan and arched, as for a statue orother decorative object. unquote

    Well that does not fit.

So I looked at number two - quote

a place or position suitable or appropriate for aperson or thing:

example to find one's niche in the business world.

    unquote

Nope that does not fit either.

    On to number 3.  quote

a distinct segment of a market.

    unquote

Ok - so if meant the iPhone was a distinct segment of the market like oh Smartphones - Yes - Yes it is.

    - Just Saying.

    http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2016/05/05Apple-and-SAP-

    Partner-to-Revolutionize-Work-on-iPhone-and-iPad.html

Apple put out a Press release on May 5th titled

Apple & SAP partner to revolutionize Work on iPhone and iPad

From this PR which is written in spine tingling manner quote

Apple® and SAP today announced a partnership to revolutionize the mobile work experience for enterprise customers of all sizes, combining powerful native apps for iPhone® and iPad® with the cutting-edge capabilities of the SAP HANA platform. This joint effort will also deliver a new iOS software development kit (SDK) and training academy so that developers, partners and customers can easily build native iOS apps tailored to their business needs.  unquote

Tim Cooke had the first quote in the PR - which says something of Apples thoughts on this - most of Apple's PR’s don’t have a quote from Tim.  Actually I went and looked at all the PR’s released by Apple since Jan 1st - that were not quarterly report related - and of those other 10 PR’s Tim Cook only was quoted one time.  That was the one about Apple Opening Europe’s first iOS App Dev center in italy announced back in late Jan.  So yes for Tim to have a quote in the PR and the CEO of SAP - it shows both companies care about this partner ship.

Now that I have teased about Tim’s quote - here it is Tim said quote This partnership will transform how iPhone and iPad are used in enterprise by bringing together the innovation and security of iOS with SAP’s deep expertise in business software, As the leader in enterprise software and with 76% of business transactions touching an SAP system, SAP is the ideal partner to help us truly transform how businesses around the world are run on iPhone and iPad. Through the new SDK, we’re empowering SAP’s more than 2.5 million developers to build powerful native apps that fully leverage SAP HANA Cloud Platform and tap into the incredible capabilities that only iOS devices can deliver. unquote

So yeah - not surprising to see the security card played - I think that is the one area where iOS completely outshines Android - and Apple will continue to beat on that drum louder and louder as time goes on.

Even the CEO from SAP worked it into his quote - where Bill  McDermott SAP CEO said quote Yada Yada - Yada Yada - together with iOS, the leading and most secure mobile platform for enterprise,  Yada Yada. Yada Yada  unquote

Later on in this episode I will talk about what may come up at WWDC and I think security and Privacy is going to rule the day.

    http://www.computerworld.com/article/3065251/apple-ios/

    wwdc-2016-apple-will-improve-apple-music.html

One thing a bunch of people have been reporting on for WWDC has to do with Apple Music and what improvements Apple will bring.  Most of these articles link back to an article from Bloomberg where they believed Apple was going to reveal the following with regards to Apple Music App.

    1. A new and more intuitive user interface.

    2. Better integration between streaming and download services

    3. Expansion of its online radio service

It is believed that apple now has over 1,000 employees working specifically on the Music offerings.

The bloomberg article also noted something interesting - even though Apple music subscriptions are up and continue to grow - over 13 Million subscribers.  Sales of music on iTunes has not dropped - and remains steady at roughly $3.5 Billion a Year.  Or to put that in perspective - from the fortune 500 list from 2013 for US companies - the iTunes revenue alone would make it in the top 500 above companies like - Reebok and Boston Scientific and Gateway - ok well that last one is not a great example but point is the revenue from iTunes music sales is a fortune 500 company on its own.

One of the improvements to Apple music some are asking for is where Apple music no longer deletes your music that you ripped onto your computer.

There was a blog post that made the rounds this past week about how Apple Music deleted 122 GB of music off the persons hard drive and then replaced some of that music in the cloud with different versions of the songs.

According the article the person said they confirmed the following with Apple quote  through the Apple Music subscription, which I had, Apple now deletes files from its users’ computers. When I signed up for Apple Music, iTunes evaluated my massive collection of Mp3s and WAV files, scanned Apple’s database for what it considered matches, then removed the original files from my internal hard drive. REMOVED them. Deleted. If Apple Music saw a file it didn’t recognize—which came up often, since I’m a freelance composer and have many music files that I created myself—it would then download it to Apple’s database, delete it from my hard drive, and serve it back to me when I wanted to listen, just like it would with my other music files it had deleted. unquote

Except well that is not how Apple music works - it does not actually delete original music from your computer that you had prior to signing up - Kirk McElhearn from Mac World has a nice article going over this in detail - but long of the short - Apple Music will pull copies into the could and will convert them to AAC in the cloud - but it will not repeat not delete them from your computer.  Not your originally ripped files.  Yes it will remove what it puts on from the Apple Music subscription - but that is not your original non-DRM music.

Yes the person who wrote that blog had his files somehow deleted - but it was almost certainly not Apple Music that did the deleting.

In any case a cleaner - easier to use interface for Apple Music - yeah I think we could use that.

    http://www.newsweek.com/expert-hacked-iphone-l-

    cops-homicide-probe-456630

Another story making the rounds with a little mis-reporting going on is the story about the LA murder trial of Actor Micahel Jace from the shield - who is accused of killing his wife.

His wife had an iPhone 5S when she was killed in May of 2014.

The articles talk about how the phone was hacked by an expert and is not as secure as people are making it out to be - some will even go as far as saying quote It was unclear which OS was installed on Jace's iPhone. unquote  And most do not point out that real encryption did not start until iOS 8 - which was launched in Sept 2014.  So we know for sure it was  iOS 7.  the iPhone 5S came out in Sept 2013 with iOS 7.  2014 was iOS 8 and iPhone 6 and 2015 was iOS 9 and iPhone 6S.  The murder was in May 2014 - it could ONLY have been iOS 7 - the pre-encryption version of iOS.

But not one article I read said that it was a version of iOS 7 for sure.  And many compared this case to the San Bernadino case.

This is completely different than the San Bernadino case where iOS 9 was on the device.

And one article from the LA times says a search warrant was served to Apple to help right after the murder and Apple at that time did help unlock it - and the reason for the expert helping now - is when they turned the phone back on in December will it did not actually come back on.

In any case - lots of mis-info on this one

    14:10

    http://www.rawinfopages.com/apps/index.php/ios/260-

    forward-messages-and-whole-conversations-on-the-iphone

And now for something completely different.

I saw this post Titled - Forward select messages or whole conversation on the iPhone.

And recently I had to help my wife and one of her friends do this for a PTA thing.  And I don’t think I ever mentioned this tip on the show.

It is actually pretty easy to forward multiple messages from a message string in the messages app.

First open to the string of messages you want to forward.

Then tap and long hold on any of the bubbles.

You should then see the pop up options of copy, speak and more - tap more.

Bingo - on the left side you will see little radial buttons pop up next to every message - with a check mark for the one you long tap / held on.  then just tap any other radial buttons for messages you want to forward - then in the lower right tap on the arrow - and then you can forward those messages on to someone else.

     So there you go.

I want to Thank Boll and Branch for sponsoring this episode.

Again that is Boll and Branch Dot Com.  Promo code TII.

These sheets are only sold online at boll and branch dot com - you can’t buy them in any stores.  That is how they keep the pricing low and free of markups.

    Hi Rob,

i'm writing to help the listener who keeps getting Apple Music search results instead of results from her own music library. If she goes into Settings, chooses Music, and turns off Show Apple Music, this behavior will stop.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hi Rob,

I was listening to an episode in March and someone wrote it about a having to re-enter passwords for wifi.

What I did, was store my wifi settings password in safari, passwords.  Now when you reset network settings, the password won't come up, but you just open up passwords and copy and paste the password.  That is the next best thing to storing passwords.

    Thanks for the show,

    Roy Sabo

    hey Rob

I received my new i-Pad pro, the little one and I am really pleased.

One of the most interesting aspects of set-up for me was that voice over was on by default which meant I could set it up by myself right out of the box.

I am not sure why so much of the Apple press, at least the people I follow, I-More and Viticci, are not thrilled by it.

I am totally blind and do not need much screen realestate to write with and do everything I do with an i-Pad.

I am most pleased by the improved audio and find just listening to the i-Pad in the kitchen, for instance, is just fine without having to connect a bluetooth speaker.

I will really enjoy using the smart keyboard when it arrives but until then, I will just continue using IOS braille to write. The i-Pad in landscape mode may be big enough for me to actually type using the home row and putting my small hands in position as if the on-screen keyboard was a physical keyboard. Others do it all the time and I believe just carrying the i-Pad around caseless would be a treat.

For me, it is the best i-Pad ever and I am a fan of the pad.

I also purchased a hard drive which is not made by apple but will allow me to store files and folders from the phone and i-Pad. I hope it works.

My intention is to be a completely ios person. I even took i-Tunes off of my windows 7 conputer.

I bought the 128 gig cellular version of the Baby Pro.

Thanks for the great show and everything you do.

I'm writing  this email in contracted ios braille.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from EDGAR PEREZ who posted the following

    Quote

Started using apple podcast app recently. Really like being able to tell Siri to fast forward while driving. All of a sudden my device backups have gotten huge though. Are the episodes I have downloaded getting on to my iCloud backup? I supposed I can delete them all and see but figured I'd ask first.

    Unquote

    To which Alberto Jurabe replied

    Quote

Try deleting downloaded podcasts in the podcast setting within the app. It won't backup what's not downloaded.

    Unquote

    And Ronald Leckfor replied

    quote

I have had a serious problem in the past with the podcast app hanging on to old data, affecting my system to the point where it crashed the ios. So once I restored my iPod Touch 5th gen, I loaded the podcast addict app and have been using it instead. IMHO the podcast app has been a real mess since the latest ios came out last fall!

I even tried unsubscribing from all podcasts, and it still hung on to its garbage data!

    unquote

    Timmy T replied

    quote

iCloud doesn't backup music, podcasts or any media that can be downloaded from the cloud

    unquote

And finally Edgar Perez replied to all

    quote

Think i found part of the problem but not all. My Photo Stream had about 650 MB. I deleted that. I also deleted the Facebook app which had ballooned to 600 MB. Then i deleted the the 2.1 GB backup and backed up again. Now the backup is 450 MB. The math does not quite work still. The Facebook app i get. The Photo stream I do not get. I had photos back up turned off and i don't think it should be backing up anything in the photo stream any way especially since if it is it must be doing it on my iPad and iPhone.. Hate that i had to spend time figuring this stuff out and still the math does not add up so I still cannot be sure what it does or does not do :(

Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts and comments in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Folks Go to today in iOS dot com slash community to join in.

And thanks to all 3,000+ of you already in the community and contributing.

Also from the Google Plus community were these comments per the last episode - which I always pin the last episode at the top.

    From Fernando De Leon

    quote

Love the podcast however can we please drop the android bashing is just too childish. Most users use both android and ios. Plus is not about who makes it.. Is about the ecosystem.. ✌

    unquote

    To which I replied:

Reporting on androids short comings is not bashing it is well Reporting. Just need to make sure the iOS folks know what to expect on the other side of the fence.

    And then John Poyser replied

    quote

I agree with Rob on this. I like & use many things that Google make. But after having to try and deal with an Android tablet gifted to my daughter and trying to help my friend who "upgraded" to a Blackberry Priv (using Android) I cannot believe there are people who try to poke holes at iOS and who claim they prefer the "freedom" of Android. Freedom to be frustrated by a horribly complicated and inconsistent, unnecessarily complex experience in trying to do simple things. We talk alot about fixing iOS issues on the podcast - but it's REALLY bad over there in Android-land.

    unquote

    Or as Karthik M said

    quote

This is an iOS fan zone. This is the way things will be

    unquote

Folks if you are holding your breath hoping I am going to stop reporting on Android shortcomings or Android bashing or whatever you want to call it - remember this little segment at the beginning of the show.

    PLAY HEY KOOLAID.

That sound clip is in there for a reason.  This is not a podcast that started after the iPhone was popular from some neutral party just looking to capitalize on the iPhones success caugh iOS today caugh No - This is Today in iOS formerly Today in iPhone which was the First Podcast started ever about the iPhone and was started in April 2007 before the iPhone launched - If you had not noticed - Little Bit Fan boy am I.  And part of the fun of doing this show is pointing out the issues with the nightmare that is known as the fragmented Multiverse know as Android.  And if you though the DC or Marvel Multiverses were confusing - that is nothing compared to what devs face in the Android Multiverse.  Just Sayin

    http://www.igeeksblog.com/best-ipad-pro-apps/

There is a post for all of us iPad Pro users - titled - the best iPad Pro apps - make the most of bigger size and better tech.

They run through 14 different apps they think work better because of the better processor and / or ram and or larger screen.

One of the apps they mentioned that I agree with - Evernote - which is great on the iPad pro - I am a big time evernote user.  Especially when you go split screen with evernote and safari - it makes it easier for me to do show notes on the iPad pro then on my laptop.

They have 13 other apps they recommend include Adobe Photoshop Mix, Procreate and liquid text - all fine apps. Plus 10 others if you are interested in seeing some of the ones they recommended - look for the link in the show notes titled The Best iPad Pro apps

And speaking of the iPad pro - I learned something new - ever since I received my smart cover when I covered the iPad pro it was not actually turn off the screen like it should - And well I found out there is a setting in the settings app under general - and the Auto lock section - labeled as lock / unlock - and it was by default turned off - which meant the screen cover did not lock it down.  toggle it on and all is as expected.  How did I learn this - well I made a genius appointment and then was publicly shamed when the genius toggled that on.  Well after he first tried a different smart keyboard cover first.  On the plus side while I was there I purchased the Wife an new iPhone SE Gold 64 GB for mothers day - so I will talk about that on upcoming episodes.

    Hi Rob

Just wondering what is on your iOS 10 wish list?

    Regards

    Steve

    Brisbane

Security Security Security - EDIT CLIP TIM COOKE

Well first for all iPhone 4S owners I expect to hear you will not be moving on up to iOS 10 - just those with the iPhone 5 and later iPhones will get that honor.  iPad 2 - yup you will be sitting on the dock with the iPhone 4S when the iOS 10 ship sales.

But the 3rd gen iPads and later including all iPad mini’s should be fine.

One rumor is anything that does not have a lightening port will not be supported - which would also mean the iPad 3rd gen would get to sit on the dock as well.

A no brainer on what to expect is improvements to Siri.

One of the rumors is Siri would be able to transcribe voicemail messages for you.

I really really really am hoping to see some customization allowed for Control center.

I guess I will ask for it again - password or passcode protecting specific apps and folders or better - touch ID protect specific apps and folders.

    SECURITY SECURITY SECURITY

Multi-user support for the masses - at least for the iPads.

Those are some of my key iOS 10 wish list items.

What are some of yours - give us a call at the restored 206-666-6364 number or email in your wish list or predictions for iOS 10.

I should mention one of the rumors picking up steam is being able to delete stock apps.

And the other popular rumor is a new rootless security system that will make it much harder if not impossible to jailbreak and for the FBI to get in.

    SECURITY SECURITY SECURITY

Here are some suggestion from the G+ Tii Community.

Stephen William wants Control Center Customization as well.

Barry Smitherman said quote That would be nice. I'd like control over which apps are default apps. Most of the time, I like the Apple stock apps, but I'd like to be able to choose different ones as default sometimes. unquote

    Apple Dystopia said quote

I'd love to add an LTE switch to Control Center, or just about any setting. Auto lock is another one I change all the time. I'd love to add that to Control Center. I never use Air Drop, so I wouldn't mind getting rid of it. I couldn't agree more, and it is something I have wanted for a long time. unquote

Again give us a call or shoot us an email about what your wants / hopes / desires and predictions for iOS 10 and Watch OS 3 and TV OS 2 for that matter.

    may-add-optical-zoom-iphone-7/

    Hi Rob,

I'm sure you've seen this already:

It was just a matter of time.  Optical zoom will change the game.  Who wants to blow up pixels when you can get closer optically?

    Regards,

    Mike

And the article Mike is talking about is titled - The Patent shows how Apple could add optical zoom to the iPhone 7 - over at PetaPixel dot com.

Essentially the patent shows a folding telephoto lens design.  Where Apple could do an optical zoom but with out a protruding camera - which is great news because right now they have a protruding camera and no optical zoom.  Just sayin

I don’t think it is much of a stretch to say the key upgrade with the iPhone 7 is most likely going to be centered around the camera.

Apple Purchased Lynx some time ago and it is time for that technology to make its way into the iPhone 7.

    http://www.appleworld.today/blog/2016/4/25/rumor-

    apple-watch-2-could-feature-cellular-connectivity

On the Apple Watch 2 rumor front - is that the Apple Watch 2 - which likely would launch in the fall will have a sim card for stand alone - truly alone functionality.

Along with the cellular capability is Apple is adding a faster processor and making the Apple Watch 2 thinner.

It will also have prongs that puncture skin and tap into a vein and use the circulating blood to spin a little turbine that powers the watch.

Because adding Cellular and a faster processor and then making it thinner - means you will be lucky to get half a day with it.  And you will need the blood turbine to power it.

    a-separate-smart-home-app/

One of the iOS 10 rumors per what will be included that is picking up some buzz is that there may be a separate Smart Home App.

Essentially this app would be your one stop app for all your connected devices that are compatible with HomeKit.

So where did this rumor originate - well in a Review on Amazon for the Echo.

    The review said quote

As I work in marketing for Apple, we test many Smart Home974532d59b4c30e66f7aa64dbb11360e.png devices, especially for iOS HomeKit integration. […]

Some advice, there are many third party applications, most free, that offer974532d59b4c30e66f7aa64dbb11360e.png more control and customization(s) with many Smart Home devices. “Yonomi” is a free app that I often use, “Home” is another which cost $14.99. Both offer support for many devices with more added daily (including Amazon “Echo”). The next version of iOS due this fall will have a standalone “HomeKit” app as well.

    unquote

Well there it is in black and white right on Amazon.com - I mean how could that be anything as legit.  Right - because All apple employees are encouraged to go on Amazon.com - state they are Apple employees and then give out info on unannounced Apple products.

I love the title of this next one and of course by Love I mean it is so dumb I love it for show material reasons. The title is Quote iPhone 7 leak reveals significant feature removed unquote

Yes - because it is big news when a rumored leak reveals a feature missing from some other rumored leaks.

In this case they are talking about the rumored addition of the smart connector on the side of the iPhone 7 - which is now not there.  But possibly it will only be on the 7S if even that - but new rumor blowing up is that Apple is already removing features.  Yeah so they were rumored features and this is only a rumored leak as well - I mean this non-story is worth 50 blog posts at least - right.

    VOICEMAIL -

    Hi Rob

Since iOS 9 I was having difficulty getting iOS apps to update in iTunes on my MBP, then sync the updated apps to my iPhone 5S, 6+ and iPad Air 2. I'd read in various forums that this facility was no longer being provided by Apple due to there now being numerous versions of the same app depending on iOS device.

However, I now seem able to update the apps on my MBP then sync them to my iPhones (or should that be iPhone devices?!), but still no joy with the iPad.

Ordinarily I'd update them OTA to each individual device but, particularly at peak times, wifi and cellular data are both woefully slow.

So is there a way of going back to the good ol' days of booting iTunes on my MBP, all the apps get updated, then simply plug each iOS device into the MBP and all updated apps are synced?  Or am I missing something?

Great show as always, the piece on how an iOS device can help someone with impaired vision and other issues was particularly poignant, and shows that big companies can be successful and care at the same time.

    Many thanks,

    Alf Crofts

    Hi Alf,

What version of OS X are you running?

And what version of iTunes do you have?

Sync’g of apps how you want to do it - should still work fine.  It is for me.

Check your setting in iTunes and make sure you have app sync’g turned on for the iPad.

    Alf replied saying quote

Thanks for getting back. I'm running OS X 10.11.3, iTunes 12.3.3.

The iPad is set to sync.  I'd previously had this issue with my iPhones (or iPhone devices - must get it right!) but they started syncing properly without my changing anything. Basically when syncing the iPad, it just seems to ignore apps. Everything else is fine.

    unquote

Check the list of Apps when the iPad is tethered to your laptop - go to iTunes - click on the iPad and go to the list of Apps - and see if the apps are installed or have “install” showing - which means you need to click - install to installs them. They should change to say “Will Install” - then click - apply in the lower right.

At which point the ipad should start backing up and copying over the apps you just selected.

I tried it with a few iPads and a few apps tonight and all worked as expected.

Also at the bottom in iTunes is an option to automatically sync over all apps added going forward.

    smartphone-mounting-system-with-qi-wireless?ref=discovery

This week for a kickstarter project we have XVIDA Smartphone Mounting system with QI wireless Charging.

This one had a goal of $35,000 and has raised over $45k to date and you have until May 25th at 12:07 PM CT to fund this one.

    Per the description

    quote

XVIDA brings seamless wireless power and effortless magnetic mounting to iPhone 6/6S, iPhone 6/6S Plus

    unquote

they do this by providing a case that has a lightning dock - and the case has the magnetic plate for securing the device to the dock and also for getting the inductive charge.

Pricing on this now starts at $60 for the iPhone 6/6S and $70 for the 6+ and 6S+.

For that price you get 1 wall charger and the case.

Add $5 and you get the Car kit with vent mount.

or the car kit with suction mount.

The Office Kit goes up another $15 to $80 and $90 for the two sizes - and gets you desk stand charger.

If you want everything - that will set you back $135 and $145.

That gets you the desk stand, the wall mount and either the Vent or suction mount for the call.

    They are shipping in June.

XVIDA is spelled X V I D A - and you can find out more about the mounting and inductive charging combo at kickstarter dot com.

One additional comment - is they claim to charge much faster than other Inductive chargers as they focus their inductive charge to a much smaller space.

    VOICEMAIL -

    Hi Rob,

I recently got a iPad Pro, the 9.7" flavor.

The Apple Pencil is definitely the secret sauce!

I teach a lot of online classes and have never found a good workflow when grading papers. I have to actually write on the paper rather than using the mark-up feature on Word.

I tried nearly every stylus out there, but using them felt like tying your shoes with oven mitts on your hands, not accurate at all.

The Apple Pencil, however, lets me write directly on the screen (I use Notability) without any problem. It has at least tripled the speed of my grading.

And the keyboard/cover is surprisingly easy to use. It is also very accurate.

The only negatives: The price; it's way too much (I had to get the 32gig because of price and I will be doing a lot of space-budgeting). Also, I really wish it had force-touch like my iPhone 6s+.

Anyway, I love the show! Keep up the good work.

    Cheers,

    Kent

    http://www.engadget.com/2016/04/15/senate-to-

    americans-your-security-is-not-our-problem/

The Senate Intelligence Committee - now there is an oxymoron if I ever heard one.  Well the Senate Intelligence committee released a draft of the Compliance with court orders act of 2016 or the back door 2016 bill.

So who are the senators that want to mandate back door action - that would be Senators Richard Burr Republican NC and Dianne Feinstein Democrat California.

Now their bill does not actually say back door penetration is required when a court order is issued - but what it does say is that when a company or person gets a court order asking for encrypted emails or files to be handed over and decrypted, then compliance is the law.

How said compliance is supposed to actually happen - well that is not something for Senate to concern itself with.

You know kind of a don’t ask don’t tell policy on how the tech companies handle this - but really the back door method is the only method possible if you have any security in place.

And putting in a back door just well kills any security anyway.

Part of the bill also requires companies to provide decrypted communications if encryption is provided by a third party.  Hugghhhh?

Some people are saying the bill is so bad it is good because it could never pass - or should never pass.  And Senator Ron Wyden Democrat Oregon has threatened to filibuster if it reaches the Senate Floor.  High fives for Seator Wyden.

Here is the real issue of this bill - if passed and companies complied with it - that would be the same as them all waiving a red flag saying Back doors are installed - now come and find them.

Right now it does look like the bill is getting very little support.

Congressman Darrell Issa Chairman of the House Judiciary subcommittee responsible for the nation’s Internet policy.  said the following quote

The legislation leaked today is about as flawed and technically-naive as a piece of legislation can get. Mandating that companies weaken our security to give government secret backdoor access into our devices would be a massive blow to American’s right to privacy and frankly would also be downright dangerous,

“As Americans are living more and more of their lives not only online but also in-concert with more connected devices than ever before, Americans deserve to know that the information retained on these devices will remain secure. This legislation would effectively prohibit any company who wants to improve the security of its products from doing so because government’s ability to access our personal and private information is more important than innovation.”

“I have worked with and respect Senator Burr and Senator Feinstein a great deal. I look forward to working with Members of Congress, cybersecurity experts, and more to educate and help show lawmakers why encryption makes us all safer — and not the other way around. unquote

I wonder what Tim Cooke thinks of all this.

    Quote

How do I jailbreak iPad first gen?

How can I get pass the lock on an iPod nano second gen?

Is there a way to get the weather app calculator app and clock app on an iPad first gen?

Do you know of a store that sells old apple products?

And is there a free VPN app for ios 6.1.6 or under or is there something on Cydia that would do the same thing a VPN would?

    unquote

Well per getting the stock apps on the original iPad - see your first question per jailbreaking.

Per jaibreaking the 1st gen iPad.  The latest or last version of iOS officially support for the 1st gen iPad is 5.1.1 and then you want to use Redsn0w 0.9.15

If you google how to jailbreak iPad on iOS 5.1.1  you should see an article from  iPhone hacks to help out.

Per your question on the iPod Nano I have no idea

Per a store selling old Apple products - check ebay.

Per a VPN - you will need to check in the cydia store once you jailbreak.

This interview was cleaned up with soundsoap - you can hear how the iRig Mic Dual lav works from a very noisy environment with cleanup vs last weeks interview which was raw - however the next two interviews after this I used a different slash Professional setup to give you some comparison.

This interview is with Thomas from the HockeyApp Team at Microsoft and runs about 16 minutes.  Thanks again goes out to MS for flying me out to cover the MS Build event.  With out further ado - here we go.
