In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote Apple’s new iPad device is destined to disappoint. Analysts predicting iPhone-like success are going to be let down. Here are 5 reasons why:

    #1) Battery Life

    #2) No Multi-Tasking

    #3) Virtual keyboard

    #4) $30/month for 3G

    #5) No Flash support

    Unquote

Adam Sharp, Wealth Today, 28th January 2010

Funny looking at that list - Battery Life actually wound up being one of the iPads biggest strengths vs Comp.  No Multi-Tasking, The Virtual Keyboard and No Flash Support - are still true today and meant nothing - Just Sayin

Sorry no Promo codes this week.

Either way - if you are an App dev - this was an opportunity wasted for your app.

    bug-lets-users-shut-down-a-phone-by-sending-it-a-text-message-

    20150527-ghbam5.html

In the category of way over hyped story is the one well we are leading with today - so add some more hype to the over hype I guess.

So what is the over hyped story - well many of you probably saw something about this - with titles like - iPhone bug lets users shut down an iPhone by sending it a text message or New iOS Bug Crashing iPhones Simply by Receiving a Text Message  or You can crash someone's iPhone with a mere text message.

Say it ain’t so Rob - some of your are thinking - well - technically it is true - someone can send your iPhone a text and it will shut down your iPhone.  The text in question is a couple of english words with a string of Arabic characters that have no meaning and a japanese character all in the same text message.

For some reason this combination causes Message app to freak out and start to crash the iPhone at which point the iPhone shuts itself down.  Actually this only happens if you have banner notifications turned on for Texts - which most do.  And then when the message is displayed in the banner - is when the crash happens.   Prevailing theory on why this is happening is that when Apple goes to truncate the text message to display as a banner - the way Arabic works is sometime reducing the number of characters actually can make the length of the message longer.  So that may be causing the message app to freak out and cause the crash.

Is this a major issue - HECK NO.  What it is - well it is annoying at best for those of you that have “friends” that like to do things like send you messages they know will crash your phone.  For most people however this is a complete non-issue.

The other problem with this is that when you get this not only does it crash your phone - but you can not even open the message app without it re-crashing your phone.

So for those of you with “friends” that can’t be trusted not to prank your phone - Apple has a temp solution.

    06:43

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204897

What Apple said to do if you get this message and it caused your phone to reboot - and now you can’t get into Message app without it re-crashing your iPhone - you can do the following.

    1. Ask siri - to read unread messages

    2. Use siri - to reply to the prank message.  After your reply you can then open Messages again.

    3. If the issue continues - get new friends.  Umm I mean - Tap and hold the malicious message, tap more and delete the message from the the thread.

Apple says obviously they are aware of the issue and a fix is coming soon.

Again this “issue” has been way way way overblown in the media - I have seen it on mainstream media and all over the tech media - and again I did choose to lead with it this week - but more to say - this for 99.99% of the people is a complete non-issue.

For those where it is an issue - you really just need new friends.

    unicode-imessage-bug-if-youre-jailbroken-updated.html

Seems the jailbreaking community was not going to wait for an Apple patch for this what is being called a Unicode bug or the Effective Power bug as the text shown for this bug starts with the words effect power. Well Jailbreakers to the rescue as there is a patch you can install if jailbroken to squash this bug.

There is a new package called - IneffectivePower - one word - that is now available in the BigBoss repository in Cydia - if you want to patch this bug and not have to update and loose your jailbreak when apple offered their patch - then you will need to install Ineffective Power - that or get better friends.

Thanks to Tim Harrison for the heads up on that story.

    https://www.yahoo.com/tech/s/man-slapped-120-

    ticket-using-apple-watch-while-114535714.html

Thanks to all that sent in this next one - and it is an Apple Watch story - And it is about a man getting a $120 dollar Ticket for using his Apple Watch while driving.

Seems a Police officer in Quebec with extremely good eyesight saw a man driving in his car and using his apple watch to change music.

How in the world any officer was able to see this and then pull the person over is beyond me - but ok - for arguments sake we accept that the person with sight that was last seen by Brand Stark in Game of thrones - actually saw this.  Per the Quebec highway safety code it states that quote no person may, while driving a road vehicle, use a hand-held device that includes a telephone function, unquote.

However some others are saying the Apple watch is a Bluetooth device that communicates with the telephone signal from the phone and it has been established under the law that you are allowed to use bluetooth devices.

So this comes down - to if you get a call when driving and answer it on your Apple watch - is it a Phone which is illegal to answer or is it a bluetooth device connected to a phone which is legal to answer.

I still find the whole - the officer saw it thing as kind of fishy.  Don’t be surprised to learn later on this whole story was made up.

That said - if you are driving in your car - it is still not a good idea to be playing with any device that distracts you - wait until you get to a stop light or better yet pull over to change music via your apple watch.

    Hi, Rob.

This is for the guy who was having trouble searching spotlight with VoiceOver on. I'm having the same issue. When I try to type my key terms using the keyboard, the screen essentially goes blank, and my phone acts as if it crashed. After a few minutes, it can recover from this problem by itself, but sometimes, I need to do a hard reset to get it to work again. I have, however, found a workaround. Instead of typing my search terms and to spotlight using the keyboard, I dictate them. It always works for me. Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Shandy W

    Hi Rob,

Per the Guy with SpotLight Search Problem.

Open the Settings app on your iOS device. Tap the General tab and then tap Spotlight Search. The results show you check marks in front of all the different types of items Spotlight will find in a search. To filter out a certain item from the search, simply tap it to remove the check mark. For example, tapping off Bing Web Results will prevent Spotlight from scouring the Web for information.

By default, your Spotlight searches and related information are sent to Apple. On its privacy screen for Spotlight, the company says it doesn't store your searches and instead uses the data to try to make its search suggestions more relevant. However, those of you concerned about privacy may still wish to turn off the entry for Spotlight Suggestions to prevent your search queries from being shared in this way.

    Hi Rob

I was just listening to your recent podcast and heard you mention about showering with the Apple Watch. I shower with my watch daily since I received my sports model on April 24th. It has been just over a month and my watch works just as great as Day 1.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came out was from Tony Treacle who wrote the following

    Quote

So ive been trying to update my Apple Watch and I keep getting this message. Im pretty knowledgeable about this stuff and have tried mostly everything. Anyone have any idea what to do?  I keep getting an error message that says Unable to verify update - the Watch OS update couldn’t be verified because you are not connected to the Internet.

    Unquote

And  there was also a post from David Hirshberg with the same basic issue and one from Caryl Goodman -  So it seems a few listeners to the show had issues with updates.

Some of the suggestions were to do a full Network Reset on your iPhone to try and get the two devices talking to one another again.  Remember with the Apple Watch - you need to update via the Apple Watch App on your iPhone. Another suggestion was to reboot your Apple Watch by holding down the Two buttons on your Apple Watch until it reboots.

Overall it looks like this issue only effected a small % of users.

This is to confirm that the WWDC Keynote will be as expected at 10:00 AM PT / 1:00 PM ET on Monday June 8th.  This is not a shock to anyone - but it is now confirmed in the updated WWDC app.

I will have another episode prior to the WWDC keynote - around June 3rd or 4th.  I will then go over the speculation for iOS 9 new features and other items to be announced.

If you have any last minute speculation you want to get in for iOS 9 and WWDC 2015 - please email me today in iOS at gmail dot com or call - 206-666-6364 - I actually moved any other speculation about the event I had flagged into the shows note for Ep 350.  So none of that this show.

Next Episode will be more focused on the general speculation and rumors.

    22:14

    http://www.cnbc.com/id/102691181

Hell may have officially have frozen over - as Uncle Gene Munster - Or often Wrong Gene - has now said he was wrong about a full blown Apple TV - and it is not going to happen after all.

He said quote This is a tough day for me. It's a hard reality to accept, and I think that is the reality of it: the TV is on hold unquote

Ok - so maybe not a full on I was wrong - as he says it is on Hold.  Man he can’t even say we was wrong correctly.

That said The thought of not having to hear another quote from Gene after each quarterly call about the upcoming full on Apple TV - is kind of sad in some ways.  I guess he will now need to get on some other far fetched idea for a future Apple product - like oh quote I think that this augmented and virtual reality theme is something we're going to hear more about. We do believe that Apple is experimenting with that, too, and so maybe there's something within that that could play into their broader strategy here, unquote.

So Yes - Yes he did go right from saying he was kinda wrong about the apple tv to predicting some sort of Augmented and virtual reality product coming from Apple.  Wow and people listen to him and invest in stocks because of his advice why?????

    http://bgr.com/2015/05/27/iphone-vs-android-advertising-

    google-profits-money/

An Interesting Article about Google and its revenue stream - and that the iPhone may actually be more important to google then its own Android OS per their bottom line.

It breaks down like this - 90% of Googles 66 Bil in Rev in 2014 came from Advertising.

And in 2014 the segment that was increasing most for Google was the revenue from Mobile search - which made up 18% of Googles Ad revenue.

Of that mobile search revenue - 75% came from iOS devices.

To put that in perspective - iOS devices generated $9 billion in ad revenue for Google vs just $3 Billion from Android in 2014.

So if there is 5 times more Android devices than iOS device world wide - and you get 3 time more revenue from iOS - that means on a per handset to handset comparison - an average iOS device generates 15 times more revenue than an average Android device.  Yikes.

This is why Google pays Apple about 1 to 2 Billion a year to be the default search engine in Mobile Safari.

    Hi Rob,

I wonder if T-Mo will allow free data podcast streaming on Spotify...like it does for music? As far as I know this will be the first service on their list to have podcasts. Be interesting to see what they do. Would love for them to put the MLB app on that list too!

    Hi Rob,

I am looking for an app, or a way to keep track of things and how long I’ve had them or been using them.  My thoughts were for a way to take a picture of the new dishwasher or TV or work boots and have them maybe in a list.  But what I wanted to be able to use it for was how long did that couch last, the TV isn’t working right but its 5 years old so maybe it IS time for a new one, and to see little things like how long does my raincoat last, or even in the case of this podcast if I had added it to the list I could see that I’ve been listening to every episode since x years ago.

My thoughts were to make a notebook in evernote and add the pictures.  At least each note will tell me the last time the note was modified.  I was hoping for something like an app that might just tell me 53 days etc.  I see Days+ app, and that might work, but I just wanted to put this out there and see if anyone else had any luck figuring out ways to do this.

    Regards,

    Dan

Hi rob I was wondering if there was any screen Recording apps  on the iPhone you recommend ?

    Sincerely

    Zachary S

I recommend using a mac running the latest version of OS Ten - and connecting your iPhone to your mac via the USB cord - and then launching Quicktime player - and then selecting “New Movie Recording” and then to the right of the record button - click the down arrow and selecting My iPhone for the camera - and then clicking record.  This works great for recording screen cast videos on the iPhone.  And it is again via the latest version of OS Ten and via the Quicktime player app and with your iPhone connected via the USB cord.

    Hi Rob

Have you heard anyone complain since the latest Apple Watch update about the Exercise feature not working properly? I achieved the 30 min goal daily since April 24th but after the update, I'll be lucky to get past 20 minutes. For the most part, it doesn't move at all. I have calibrated it multiple times with my phone and even on a 1 hour walk with both my phone and watch, using the Fitness app, I still only get 15 minutes after 1 hour.  I am not sure if it was too sensitive prior to the update or Apple messed up.

    Regards,

    Evan from Ontario Canada

    your-steel-apple-watch-with-24k-gold?ref=nav_search

Under the Really Dude Category for Kickstarter projects is a $114 dollar kickstarter campaign that has until June 10th at 1:31 AM CT to be funded - which does not look like it is going to hit its goal of $19,733 - as it has just $1,500 so far.

What is said $114 project - it is the Plate your Steel Apple Watch with 24K Gold - project.  Yes that is the name and well it kinds of leaves nothing to the imagination on what it is about.

So if you purchased a stainless steel Apple watch and now find yourself compelled to do your own DIY gold plating on it - there is a kit available for you in Kickstarter or well based on the way the funding is going - most likely not.  This is kind of a no duhhh - it is not going to get funded project - as those that purchased a steel apple watch - choose to spend some extra coinage to get the nicer looking apple watch and most are not going to spend another $100 in the hopes that their DIY Gold plating just does not look a lot like a DIY gold plating job.

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/haloband/halo-

    back-make-your-iphone-perfect/description

Now not all Kickstarter projects are as questionable as goldplating your stainless steel apple watch.

One project that has well exceeded its original goal of $20k - with now well over 150k is the Halo Back - the World’s first smart screen protector.

This project has until June 12th at 11:31 AM CT for additional funding and for you to get involved.

Curren pricing on this is $17 if there are any left by the time you hear this for one.  or $34 for 2.

This is for the iPhone 6 or 6Plus - your choice - and what it does is it puts a back button at the bottom left of the iPhone - essentially it is circuitry sandwiched in the screen protector that when you touch in the lower left below the screen - it registers as a touch in the upper left where the back button is usually located for many apps.

It is a neat idea - and given the level of funding - many others think so as well.

Just search for Halo Back - two words at kickstarter dot com or in the show notes for ep 349 - thanks to all that sent this one in.

For those of you like me that funded the SOS Charger and have yet to receive it - well sad news - it looks like we are never going to get it.  On May 23rd they put out a Project update - which is basically a long Dear John letter.  They say they are committed to fulfilling every backers reward - but then also say they are deeply in debt - with no funds to ship what units they have and no one to ship them anyway.  Long of  the short - when they decided to sell to retailers last fall before shipping to funders - yeah - that was when we kinda of could see they were out of money.  Oh well this was a gamble that did not pan out.  If I ever receive one - I will consider it a gift at that time - but for now - I am totally writing this one off.  If anyone listening does get an SOS charger - please let me know.

    really-just-a-scam-119808318139.html

Thanks to Michael for sending in this next article - which very much relates to the story about the SOS Charger.  And this article is from Yahoo Tech and is titled - Is that Crowdfunding Campaign really just a scam.

Folks - yes - some crowdfunding campaigns are scams - where the people just tried to get money and run.  Is that the case with the SOS charge - no - I do know one person that received on - Paul Colligan.  So I know they have product - and they sold product to re-sellers to get more money.  I really think with SOS charger it is a case of don’t blame on Malice that which can easily be explained by Incompetence.

The Article Michael sent over goes over another project the Soap Router - which does appear to be malice - Well at least it appears that way when the founder of that project posted a pic of his new BMW.

The author goes over 7 ways to scope out crowdfunding projects.

Some are common sense - Do a background check on the project and make sure it does not sound like it is breaking the laws of physics type promises.  Look at the comments.  But I think the most important one is the last bit of advice - remember - Crowdfunding projects are about funding a product that is not yet fully developed and ready for production.  You are funding an idea or concept and getting it to reality takes money and talent and sometimes good luck or at least a lack of bad luck.  Hey even Apple had issues with the Apple watch and the Haptic engine from one of their vendors - things do go wrong or bad from time to time even with the best controlled supply chains.  I don’t want to just throw SOS charger under the bus here - I just want to say remember for all these Kickstarter projects - consider them a 50 / 50 bet at best - and if you are lucky you get a cool new project at a lower then Retail price before all your friends.  If you are unlucky - you sit here 3 years later still not able to hand crank to charge your iPhone up.

I will say this the Pearl Compact Mirror / battery pack I received via a kickstarter project is my Wifes favorite iPhone accessory and all her friends covet it as well.  Sometime these projects work out - sometimes not so much.  So I guess I am saying don’t give up on the crowdfunded projects - they are a great part of the iOS ecosystem.

    Hi Rob,

I use PocketCast for all my podcast listening and this shows each episode's artwork both in the app and on the lock screen.

    Regards,

    D.R.

    Hi Rob,

I use Pocketcasts as my pod catcher and there is a setting to "show embedded artwork". I get all the changing artwork on my lock screen for every episode.

    Regards,

    Keith F

    Hi Rob,

I listen to your show using iCatcher. I have been using this app for awhile and your show episode artwork changes per episode.

    Regards,

    John H.

Hi Rob - The app iCatcher has always shown your unique episode artwork on the main screen. No need to change your methods - Marco needs to fix Overcast.

On the MacCast podcast Adam is apparently changing the graphics during the episode, and I see those changes too.

    Regards,

    -Dan

    Rob

I use the iCatcher! podcast and for as long as I can remember the show are always changes from week to week. On both the lock screen and the apps "play" screen. Just an FYI,

    Regards,

    Richard

    Hi Rob,

I use instacast. episodic art is available. just one more reason why I really like instacast over overcast and the default apple podcast app.

    Regards,

    Francisco T

    Hi Rob:

Regarding Tii artwork. using the Instacast app, the custom episode artwork is displayed both on the lockscreen and the playback screen. In the general podcast subscription screen the top level Tii branding image is displayed.  I shifted to Instacast after getting frustrated with other podcasts apps that used iCloud to sync downloads across several iOS devices. Instacast uses their own servers and not iCloud for this feature and I find it more reliable.

In other news, the YouTube "widget" on my 2nd Gen AppleTV still seems to work like it always did. My subscriptions, favorites, watch later list, etc. still function. I am not seeing the issues you described.

    Regards,

    Pat in Austin

    VOICEMAIL -  Tim_Downcast_artwork_different_per_ep

    Hi Rob

I noticed a couple of episodes back that your Tii episode artwork started showing up on my lock screen and in my 2012 Camry. It matches the episode artwork in Tii app. Yes it works, not sure if a recent Downcast app update did it or why I see it when other listeners do not. Maybe an app update or hard reset?

Btw,  I use both apps and this only works with Downcast app, doesn't work with Apple's Podcasts app.

    Regards,

    Alan in Ohio.

PS - I traced this when I first started seeing episode artwork, it was Tii episode 346 May 8th, so likely the 2.8.30 Downcast update on May 6th enabled the episode art.

    Hey Rob,

I heard you talking on the latest show about the limitations of the

Podcasts and Overcast apps in that they aren't able to display the

show level artwork for podcasts.  FWIW, I use Downcast and I do get the show level artwork.

    Regards,

    Kevin

    Hi Rob.

You mentioned the problem of episode artwork not appearing in the podcasts app. It works perfectly in Downcast, displaying the episode artwork on the lock screen as well on the player screen for an individual episode, and when you go to the list of Today in iOS episodes, it shows the main podcast artwork.

On the latest episode you played a clip of your voice through bluetooth headphones. I’m so used to the way your voice normally sounds on the podcast, that I can’t even recognise it as your voice when I hear you through those headphones, and I noticed the same effect at least once before when you were interviewing people at a trade show. This must be an interesting side effect of not knowing someone’s voice in real life but only from a podcast.

Regarding having a security lock on apps, there is an app I have called “My Utilities”, for which the icon looks like a folder with four mini app icons in it, but that is just to disguise what the app is. When you load it, it allows you to store secret videos, photos and notes within the app, then lock them with a slide gesture pattern on a keypad so that no-one else can access it, and they are unlikely to even know that anything is in there due to the app looking like a folder.

Also, you mentioned that Android has a security lock in some apps, but is this worth the metaphorical paper it’s written on, considering the lack of sandboxing and security on Android phones that allow any app to access any data in the root directory of the phone?

    Regards,

    Matthew F

    Adelaide, Australia

All thanks for the feed back so it looks like Beyond the Tii App which shows the episode level artwork - PocketCast, iCatcher, Instacast and Downcast also all support the Episode level artwork and show it on the lock screen as well.  However OverCast and the Podcasts App do not. Nor Does Spotify.  I did see the developer of HiCast who is in the Google+ community and listens also comment that he will update HiCast to support the episode artwork in the lock screen - it already shows the individual artwork on the play screen when unlocked.

    http://www.loopinsight.com/2015/05/29/why-

    the-google-photos-license-agreement-is-keeping-me-out/

There is a lot of people talking about the new Google Photos app that Google just launched. This allows you to upload all your photos and videos to Google and then you can sync among your many devices.

This is a free offering - well Freemium service any way.

For the free part you can upload images up to 16 MegaPixels and up to 1080p videos.  and you get unlimited storage of your photos and videos.

You can upload via iOS via their app and also via a web browser for Macs and PC’s to get all your photos off of your computer.

Once uploaded google then does some compression to the photos to quote save space on its servers unquote - or to better index and add in tags for better search later on not mentioned.

If you don’t want the images and videos compressed you get 15 TB of drive space and once it is full it is $10 a month per terabyte of extra capacity.

Of course you do not want this to be your only place to put your images - it should only be looked at as an extra place to back up photos.  Remember all those other Google pet projects that got the axe - and know there is a decent probability this one will meet with an axe in the next 5 years.

That all said - one thing you might want to consider is this - In the Google Terms of service - quote

When you upload, submit, store, send or receive content to or through our Services, you give Google and those we work with a worldwide license to use, host, store, reproduce, modify, create derivative works, communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute such content. The rights you grant in this license are for the limited purpose of operating, promoting, and improving our Services, and to develop new ones. This license continues even if you stop using our Services

    unquote

Some are speculating that Google is free to use any of your images for any purpose including in Ads if they want and for ever - even after you remove those images.

That said - Google was asked about that - and they responded to the Register in the UK with the following quote

"Google Photos will not use images or videos uploaded onto Google Photos commercially for any promotional purposes, unless we ask for the user's explicit permission."

    unquote

What is my recommendation - Well if Google is true about not using your photos without your permission - then the argument about not using them for that reason mostly goes away.

Which then brings us back to how you are using it - I would say only to use it as a secondary back up of your images and to have at least two other physical places you have your images - i.e. on your computer and then a back up drive or service for your computer.

I think it is safe to say there is a good probability that in the next 5 years - this service will get the Axe if Google can’t figure out how to monetize the offering. Guess someone will need to remind me on June 1st 2020 - how that prediction turned out.

Thanks to all that sent in this next one.  Which is one of those news from the weird or in this case extremely lucky category.  It is about a 25 year old British man that was shot in the chest at close range with a shot gun - and the lucky part for him - well his Green iPhone 5C was in his pocket and it took most of the blast and is credited with saving his life.  His iPhone 5C did not survive - so no luck for it - and the nier do well that shot him - he was charged with attempted murder - so no luck for him - well actually I guess he could be charged with Murder instead of attempted murder - so some luck for him.

By the way I hope it goes without saying - Kids don’t try this one at home.

Hello Rob I thought I would share something that I've experienced with you regarding un jailbreaking my device. I had a jailbreak tweak called untethered hey Siri which would allow me to contact Siri without being plugged in. I un jailbroke my device for me to be able to get the Apple Watch and to my surprise thank God the tweak stayed because it's was my main reason for staying jailbroken.

    Hi Rob,

Was a bit tickled over your explanation about the MOONDOG from your call in number, but since the question came from a listener in the UK, a bit more explanation may be needed.

The letters on the telephone dial/keypad while very common in North America, is not so common in Europe and other areas of the world. So the cryptic spelling we have in our phone numbers here in the US, may not be as evident too all of your world wide listeners.

    Hi Rob,

I have been a long time Sony fan and have of course been using Xperia phones and tablet, but I was always having some kind of trouble with every single unit, it was problems like: camera not working, could not update to new OS(even when the phone was ment for the new OS) and not recognizing memory card, and of course it was the android OS ( it sucks)

So I bought myself a 32gb iPad Air and a iPhone 6 128gb & guess what?  I'm enjoying every second of it. I'm never never never going back to android.

    Regards,

    Kjell Olav Soreng from Norway.

    Hi Rob

From Scotland I'm an avid listener and have been for now for many years. I just wanted to tell you the miserable time I've had with the Apple watch ordering process and I wondered wether the length of time might be because I'm in Scotland?(Thoughts).

Well my wife and I keenly ordered my birthday present said Apple watch on the 10th of April and we ordered the 42mm Space grey Sport watch. Now I've been listening to your show and how people have been reviving them early and I had initially been quoted June time which was then narrowed down to the 29th of May to the 11th of June. I had hoped I would be lucky and receive it early for my birthday(23rd of May) alas as you would say no soup for me:(

I really feel disappointed in the service I had received from Apple which is the first time ever and I have updated my iPhone every year. I guess my feelings are being made worse by hearing that Tim Cook say that the Apple watches will be in store by June.

Granted he didn't say when in June but as a quite severely disabled customer I just feel from the 10th of April to the delivery date of June the 11th has been very disappointing.

Just wanted to hear your thoughts Rob and thank you for such an amazing show

Welcome to the show I am your host Rob and this is the Today in iOS podcast -  First up I want to thank RON for sending in the music you hear in the background. RON wrote:

    Rob,

This is a song I recorded in garage band on my iPad using just a guitar and basic effects available in the garage band app. It consists of two tracks with background picking and solo on top of that. The name of the track is "Lift Me Up" and is based off of a song I wrote back in high school many years ago and is dedicated to a band mate who passed away recently.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote E-readers will outsell iPads because of the simple economics of the consumer device market. It’s triple the weight and 30% thicker than an e-reader. You need two hands to hold it. It’s got a backlit screen, and it’s too expensive to give one to everyone in your house. unquote

One of the things the E-ink reader people were touting as a reason e-ink readers would win out was their superior battery life.  Sound familiar to some saying the same about the Apple Watch vs the pebble.  But Apple learned with the iPad - if the battery life can get you through a full days usage that really is enough - To bad today’s pundits don’t remember how wrong Russ Wilcox was 5 years ago - Just Sayin

    Hi Rob

I'm from the uk! Love the show! Please explain what moon dog means?

    Regards,

    Lee

Well Lee I am glad you asked - It has been a while since I went over this.  MoonDog - could be my shout out to the blind and homeless Artist known as Moondog - who lived on the streets of NY City Dressed as a Viking in the 50’s 60’s and 70’s - and who some considered one of the greatest composers of the 20th century - A Genius who's works  have been covered by the greats like Janis Joplin - and whom was touted as  a great innovator by Charlie Parker and many others.  A True artist and eccentric.   It could be my tip of the cap to him.  Maybe.

Orrr it could be because I was putting together a tutorial the same month this show launched 8 years ago - and the service I use for my call in number stopped giving out custom phone numbers right before I could get one for this show - and I had this one number 206-666-6364 which spelled out 206- moon-dog - still available from the tutorial - and decided to use it instead of just some random number - because I thought it was a really easy number to remember.

I’ll let you decide which was the real reason for the moon-dog number.

Either way there is a very cool article on MoonDog the composer in the show notes for Ep 348.

    said-in-talks-to-add-podcasts-to-challenge-apple-itunes

Ok - one interesting thing about todays show - is it is the first one I did the schedule to future release down to the minute.  See I was restricted from saying these next few words until after 11:00 AM ET today - and those words are - Welcome all new listeners on Spotify.  That’s right Today in iOS and Podcasts are now available on Spotify - well at least for some spotify users today.  Yes this is big news for this show and big news for Podcasting.

Here is the news from Spotify - Quote This summer we will be launching a completely new Spotify experience for our millions of users.. We.. know that people can’t live on music alone. That’s why we wanted to add in Audio and video content that is hyper relevant to our users lives and that includes entertainment, news, PODCASTS, sports, weather and much more all programmed to individual tastes and preferences.  It all kicks off on May 20th at 11:00 AM in NYC with a massive press event to showcase the new spotify and our new content partners.  unquote.  One of those new content partners is Libsyn and via Libsyn this podcast - Today in iOS.

If you are a podcaster and want to get into Spotify - first make sure you are hosting on libsyn - second make sure you are using libsyn publishing tools and not just selecting download only option and third second - email me your libsyn show slug and / or your email address - and I will get you on the list to have a spotify destination turned on for your show once this opens up to all.

Right now at the time of this announcement it is a small % of Spotify users that have access to Podcasts and a small % of Podcasts - But again welcome to all new listeners via Spotify - Boy oh Boy - I have been itching to say that.  And then later this summer it will open to the masses. This is a big deal for podcasting.

By the way if you are listening on Spotify or Stitcher or anything other than the Tii App - all articles we mention today you can find links to at today in iOS dot com for item 348.

    http://9to5mac.com/2015/05/19/apple-watch-os-software-update/

If you have an apple watch - and this is not to rub salt in the wounds of those still waiting  - but if you have one you should have seen on the 19th a message stating there is the first Update to Apple Watch software to Watch OS 1.0.1  What is this update - well like almost all Double dot updates it is about performance improvements and bug fixes.

For this specific double dot update Apple says it offers improved performance for:

    Siri

    Measuring stand Activity

Calculating calories for indoor cycling and rowing workouts

distance and pace during outdoor walk and run workouts

    accessiblitiy

    Third Party Apps

And display support for new emoji characters and additional language support for Brazilian Portuguese

    Danish

    Dutch

    Swedish

    Russian

    Thai and Turkish

To Install Apple asks that you make sure the Apple Watch is in range of your iPhone, It is connected to its charger and charged at least 50%.

Seems odd to ask that it be connected to the charger and charged at least 50%.

I did update today yesterday and all seems to have gone well with the update - Per Battery Life - with 2 hours and 13 minutes of usage - and 7 hours and 40 minutes of standby - my phone is 68% of battery life which seems really good.  I will see how it does over the next week or so and report back.  Again my update went off with no issues - however if you did have an issue - email me and let me know what happened.

I went back and looked at a couple of articles sent in about the Apple watch from September when it was announced to see how they faired - now that we have had one on our wrist almost 4 weeks.

One article was titled - The Apple Watch isn’t waterproof.

This coming via David Pogues Article - and umm - well maybe back in September Pogue talked to the wrong people or Apple got better results then originally planed - but one thing back then they said you could not do was shower with it. And now that seems to be something that is ok with the Apple watch - not that I actually have done that.

    http://www.gsmarena.com/apple_watch_specs_to_include_

    512mb_ram_4gb_storage-news-9726.php

From GSM Arena - the Apple Watch was to have just 4GB of Storage.

They said their might be an 8GB version but the 4GB would be the standard configuration - Umm wrong - it is 8 GB of storage.  with about 6.5 GB available to the user.

They also said it would have a GPS radio - ummm - no.

The did get the 512 MB of RAM speculation right - 1 out of 3 ain’t bad if you are talking baseball - but not so good in this case.

There were other articles speculating about how it would be adopted - and we are still waiting to see on that front.  One talking about it not fitting under your cuff.  Excuse me - that is by design - how can some say - hey is that the Apple watch if it is hidden under your cuff?

But I think One thing I saw in a few articles from Watch people that stood out - was their compliments to Apple for not going too small or too big to differentiate between mans and womens watches.  They said many would have gone with 35 and 44 MM sizes - with 35 really being too small for most and 44 being too big.  They felt Apple going with 38 and 42 MM was the right size balance.  And I would agree - I think any bigger than 42 MM would be tough to pull off and not look overtly nerdy - it would likely look very Googlish at that size - something just for a tech nerd.  And 35 MM would not be user friendly at all.

And that brings me to this email feedback.

    Hi Rob,

I got my Apple Watch Yesterday ...aaaand now it's on Craigslist.

I purchased the 38mm Space Gray sport and as soon as I opened it, I knew the watchface was too small for my wrist. Somehow I thought the 38mm face was going to be bigger than it is, and that the 42mm would be way too big. But the 38mm is actually quite small and feels too "dainty" for my wrist. By the way I'm 6'0", 185lbs, an average sized guy.

I never had a chance to try these on the Apple Store ahead of time, definitely should have and would recommend it to anyone thinking of buying an Apple Watch.

So I'm going to order the 42mm, unless any of your listeners have a Space Gray 42mm they'd like to trade? If I haven't sold mine on Craigslist yet I'd be willing to do a trade plus throw in an extra $50.

Hi Rob, I just wanted to mention that I woke up at 1:15 the morning of the Apple Watch pre-order, ordered a Sport Watch and extra Band.  It said it would ship in June, but I just received a shipping notice that it will be here tomorrow! April 24th  My SO will be so happy!

ps:  I ordered a Harry’s shaving kit last Spring for my 22 year old son, who can never find quite the right shaver.  He loved the kit and ordered refills.  I got him a second kit las Christmas, since he is an Ambulance Driver (now in Paramedic School) and needs a shaver for his Dopp Kit.  Thank you for having such great advertisers.

    Regards,

    Steph in Henderson

Thanks Steph for the feedback and thanks for supporting our sponsor  and I want to thank Harrys for sponsoring this episode - if you go to harrys dot com - that is h a r r y s dot com and use the promo code t i i - you will save $5 on your first order.

Lets face it guys one of the worst parts about shaving is tracking down that person to unlock to the display case so you can get your razors - the other worst part is the price you pay for said razors when you get to the check out counter.  Harry's helps on both those fronts - no need to go to the store - you just order on line and get the razors delivered right to your door with free shipping.  The starter kit The Truman Set is amazing - for $15 you get a razor - Foaming Shave Gel and 3 razor blades - all in a great package that screams GIFT ME GIFT ME - are you listening ladies.

And that new Foaming Shave Gel is great.  If you look at what it is made from you might not know if you should eat it or shave with it.  The ingredients include Licorice Root extract, a blend of Cucumber and Aloe - after using it my wife was asking what smelled sooo good.  It really is nice to shave with something that is not made from industrial chemicals.

I am 100% a full fledged Harrys customer - have been for over a year - that is my blade - nothing else.  And they really are the best blades out there - and that is not an accident - Harry’s purchased a German factory to make the blades for their razors.  They offer a close comfortable shave with each blade lasting well over a month.

And fathers day is right around the corner - don’t wait - get that special dad in your life a Harry’s shave kit.  It sure the heck beats an ugly tie.  And it is something they will remember you for through out the year.  It really does make a great gift option for Fathers day.

Once again go to Harrys.com now and save $5 off when you enter the code - t i i with your first purchase.  That is h a r r y s dot com and enter the coupon code T I I at check out to save $5 on your first purchase and start shaving better today or at least as soon as your new shave kit arrives at your door step.

    VOICEMAIL - Answr_apple_watch_not_accurate_arms_moving

Hey Rob, I am a long time listener and have had my space gray 42mm since the first week they came out. I am responding to the person who had the issues with heart rate accuracy on the watch. I have had similar issues that have been similar and  consistent with a couple different workouts. When I choose "outdoor run" the watch has been consistent in measuring my heart rate and seems to check pretty frequently(every minute) when I review on the health app. When I choose "other" as the workout and look down at my heart rate it seems to be off or delayed. I check my heart rate manually on my wrist and it is in the 150s but the watch seems to be working on checking and it shows that I am in the 90s which was the case a couple minutes before. I also have noticed that if you send your heartbeat to another person who has a watch it may not be using your real time heartbeat, but the rate it took the last time it checked.

My feeling is that the issue with heart rate accuracy may be related to the program that is selected and how often it checks your heart rate. It seems that when I want to spot check my heart rate it takes a long time, sometimes 30-40 seconds to give me a rate.

    I hope this helps.

    Raj from Houston.

    Hi Rob,

A listener called into the last show asking about apps for Autism. This woman - Lauren S. Enders is an SLP on Pinterest and pins great apps!

    Regards,

    Laura in Nashville.

Thanks laura - and if you search for Lauren S. Enders in pinterest you will find her - she has 152 boards - so it will take a little searching to find the boards you want to follow or really unfollow once you follow her.

    Hi Rob

For the listener looking for Autism apps, there is the grace app http://www.graceapp.com its in the App Store and is free.

And this is with regards to a tutorial over at Apple Insider that talks about how to get the monogram on the watch face to be an Apple logo.

But hey first lets talk about getting a monogram to start with.  To do that go to the apple watch app on your iPhone - then go to Clock Settings and tap on Monogram - and enter your text up to 4 characters.  Naturally I have Tii for my monogram.  But this tutorial / article goes over how to add in the Apple logo - which does require you to copy it from a tweet.

I did try to get the L L A P logo to work - but it would not.

Note this is for the Color Watch face - the Monogram does not show up on most watch faces or any other that I could tell.  Thanks Mark for the heads up on that.

And since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Hi, My name is James, love your podcast. I came across an interesting article from 9to5mac about thieves being able to reset stolen Apple watches. See link below. Interested in your thoughts on this.

Well James - thanks to you and all others that sent links over on this one.

And in a nutshell what this article and others like it are saying is if a thief makes off with your Apple Watch - they can do a full restore to it - and then pair it to their own iPhone.  There is a way to do a hard reset of the Apple Watch.  This clearly is not good and brings back the possibility of Apple Picking season opening up again in Cities.  Activation lock rolled out in iOS 7 essentially killed what Police called Apple Picking.  That is the high theft rate of iPhones.  But now the Apple watch is vulnerable.  I would imagine Apple will address this sooner rather than later.  But for anyone that has their Apple Watched picked - it will not be soon enough.

Seems the US commander in Chief has his own person Twitter account - and he is tweeting from an iPhone.  Does this mean the iPhone is finally considered secure enough by the DOD for the President to use - NOPE - for all his business or government use - he is still stuck with a blackberry.  But for tweeting - he is using one of his staffers iPhones.

For those curious his twitter handle is @POTUS - which I am sure either Hillary or Jeb is going to be bummed they have to use @POTUS2 when they get in office.

And Speaking of Jeb - he was spotted sporting an Apple Watch - but probably not the sport.  Although Newt Gingrich in his pic with an Apple watch was sporting an Apple Watch sport with a Blue sports band.

    15-inch-macbook-pro-new-imac-with-retina-5k-display/

Apple just announced as in yesterday May 19th a new Mac Book Pro update and a new iMac update with 5K retina display. I will not go into the details - this is not a mac show - but I mention this for a couple of reasons - one now all the mac book pros support force touch. Yes all products intro'd in 2015 support force touch - good bet that will continue with any new iPhones and iPads intro'd later this year. Second and maybe more importantly - if Apple is intro'g the a new iMac now and a new MacBook Pros now - the later a product that many at WWDC will be highly interested in - after all they touted it as Faster and longer-lasting - Wow - if this was not a G-rated show I could really have fun with that tag line - any If they make this Faster and longer-lasting Mac Book Pro announcement on May 19th - that means they did not want it to take away valuable Keynote time from those things they will be introducing and that hopefully means some really cool announcements at WWDC on June 8th.  Sure this could just be all wishful thinking on my part - but that does not make it any less likely.

Either way - I have a new Mac Book Pro coming to me early in June - which hopefully will greatly speed up my whole production work flow.  If not there is also the new MacBook coming in June.  It is a really expensive few months for Today in iOS.  No wonder Apple is the richest company in the world.  Oh and lets not forget the new Apple TV likely to be released at WWDC.

    https://fortune.com/2015/05/18/apple-watch-iphone-whine/

In the rumor category for Apple Watch - comes a rumor that a future feature will be where you Apple watch alerts you if you get outside a certain range of your iPhone.

Which I don’t think I mentioned on the last show - you do not need your iPhone with you to use Apple Pay on the Apple Watch.  I recently ran to McDonalds to get a bunch of McFlurries - and I left my iPhone home - but I tried Apple Watch just for fun - and it worked.  So no - your don’t need the iPhone on you to use Apple Pay via the Apple Watch.

That said - once Apple roles out this feature - you are not likely to leave where ever with out your Apple watch.

Hopefully Apple makes it a two way connection where both devices start vibrating and signaling when they get too far apart.  That way if someone lifts your apple watch without you noticing - your iPhone will start going crazy in your pocket.

    coherent-navigation-a-mapping-start-up/?_r=0

Quite a few people sent in links to articles about this next one - and that is Apple acquired the GPS startup called Coherent Navigation.  They give more precise GPS location information. Many are speculating Apple made this acquisition to help bolster the accuracy of Apple Maps.  But I think long term this may be more about Apple’s eventual push into the Automotive market and this is for more precise autonomous driving of the vehicle than it is per Apple Maps accuracy.  Looking at some of the descriptions of their service in some of their investors websites - you will see the phrase - Autonomous navigation and robotics - to describe some of their services.  And it looks like some of their key people come out of Trimble - which again goes back to GPS guided vehicles more than hyper accurate maps to find your lost iPhone.  Maybe it will be both - but to me this plays more into the rumors about a future Apple Car then anything else.

    to-delay-homekit-launch-fortune-reports.html

In the rumor front - I saw a bunch of articles saying that HomeKit launch will be delayed - and they all went back to an article from someone that said Homekit was going to launch in May.  So basically once the person realized their initial guess was wrong - they said - it has been delayed to August or September.

Well Apple does not usually comment on these things - but this time they did - and they said ummm NO - it is not delayed.  Apple said that HomeKit compatible products will be available this summer.  Per Apple quote

“HomeKit has been available for just a few months and we already have dozens of partners who have committed to bringing HomeKit accessories to market and we’re looking forward to the first ones coming next month,” unquote

Will be interesting to see what the first break out HomeKit accessory will be. But in any case - expect Apple to mention something about home kit at WWDC on June 8th.

Speaking of launch times - every year around this time there is a rumor that the iPhone will launch early in August - this is what we call link bait - it is a great article title to put out because people are sooooo wanting to get a new iPhone early so they will instantly flock to it.  But always the rumors are basesless - and go back to the oft quoted un-named sources, people in the know, people familiar with apple or some other phrase like that. And yes as I said it is that time of the year and once again that rumor / link bait is out again. I will give them a little credit for creativity this time - as they say the reason for the early launch is the better then expected yield for components.   Take this report for what it is worth - and that is less then the gum stuck to the bottom of your shoe.  Just Sayin.   Oh and don’t look for a link to this one - I am not going to justify those link baiters this time with a link in my show notes.

Switching gears - kinda - This is not related to anything just an interesting observation - so I thought I would throw it in here at the end of the rumors section (yes I have sections in the show).  I was looking at the different iOS 8.4 beta 3’s available - there are 34 different iOS devices it is available for - that is 1 iPod touch - 5th gen.  9 - iPhones - iPhone 4S to iPhone 6 Plus.  And 24 Different iPad’s - from iPad 2 to iPad Air 2.  and all the mini’s as well.  I really just wanted to point that out now for future reference back to this segment - when the iOS 9.0 beta is available next month to see what the difference is in the number of devices supported.  (ios_84_beta3_devices.png) and I took a screen shot of that to compare as well.  Again this mention was to get it in the show notes to talk about in June.  My guess is iOS 9 will not be available for the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S as a min - but will be interesting to see what other devices don’t make the cut.  It is possible the 5 and 5C’s don’t make the cut as well as any device that does not have a 64 bit processor.  We shall see.

    http://money.cnn.com/2015/05/13/technology/hackers-

    starbucks-app/index.html

Remember when I went on a little bit of an Anti CurrentC rant - saying the last thing you would ever want to do is connect your checking account directly to a payment system.  Only bad bad things could happen.  Yeah - well Starbucks own payment system can connect to your checking account and guess what - YUP - Starbucks payment accounts were hacked - most likely via phishing scams - and people are reporting funds being pulled from credit cards, Pay Pal and also bank accounts.

Per Credit Cards - those are usually easiest to dispute.

Pay Pal takes more time / effort to dispute

But Bank Accounts - yikes -those you are often SOL.

In the article it talked about one user getting scammed out of $500 via Pay Pal and taking over two weeks to get the money back.

Point is this - it is stories like this that will doom CurrentC to failure - you just don’t ever want to connect your bank account directly to a payment system - EVER.

Credit cards give you an extra layer of security - and the ease of connecting is why Apple Pay is winning the day in mobile payments already.

Now we just need to get Target on board - and Homedepot back on board.

Seems that Homedepot while once many stores supported Apple pay - I know my local store did.  Well seems Homedepot quote UPDATED unquote their payment system - and now Apple Pay has been terminated / killed / mutilated.  I went this past weekend and tried it as I heard rumors they put up the block - and if you try to use it - it totally borks the payment process - and you have to void everything out that was scanned and start all over.  You can’t even switch to a credit card - it totally messes up the terminal - so make sure the next time you are in Home depot - you try and use apple pay - because it took a manager to come over and get the terminal reset.  Anything you can do to chew up human resources - gets a message sent up the latter to fix things.  I know the manager that came over was complaining about it messing things up and said they were going to report it to their tech people.

    munster-apple-tv-timeline

This one could have gone in the How wrong were they segment - but really it would have taken up to much time.  It is about Often Wrong Uncle Gene Munster.

And it goes over his beating of the drum for a full size Apple TV - the article is from the Verge and it just picks one quote from each year since 2009.  Starting with quote We expect Apple to Design a connected TV over the next two years launching in 2011 with DVR functionality built in unquote.

Mind you while they only put in one quote a year from Often Wrong Gene - You could easily find multiple quote each year from him about the Apple TV.

In 2012 they choose this quote from him - quote - If you are in the market for a new TV hold off - Apple has a new product coming and its going to be hot unquote.

Or in 2013 quote no question whether its a set-top box vs a TV - its an Actual TV

And then in 2015 quote while recent media reports question Apples interest in an actual TV - we continue to believe it is the most logical next area of focus unquote

And now with the Wallstreet journal and others reporting any plans Apple ever might have had for a full on TV died over a year ago.

And now finally maybe Gene will give up on his pipe dream of a full on TV from Apple.

Remember folks - just because they are an anal-ist covering Apple Full time - and getting paid 6 figures plus to do so - does not mean they have any clue at all to the future of Apples Product road map.   Just Sayin.

    Hi Rob,

Rob, here is a quick way to use Apple to control the podcast app. If you engage Siri on the Apple Watch and just say the word "Play" it will automatically start playing the last item being played on the iPhone up to and including podcast. It will start right where you last left off. This works great for me since I listen to podcasts on my iPhone more than anything else. This trick works about 95% of the time. The other 5% of the time it will start playing music regardless of what you were previously listening to.

    acoustic-amplification-stand-for-iphone-6?ref=discovery

This time for a kickstarter project I have one that falls into that category of no real need for - but it sure looks good.

It is the Elago Acoustic Amplification stand for the iPhone 6.

It has a goal of $10k - and is almost 10% of the way there. With a funding deadline of June 15th at 4:30 PM CT.

Pricing on this is $100 - and what it is - is two blocks of transparent acrylic which are held together with magnets - when closed it is a dock for your iPhone 6 that then amplifies acoustically the audio out the front of the block.

It is a Pretty bobble that would look very nice on a modern / futuristic desk.  If you desk is Glass and metal - then this is something you want to look at.

Again - no need for this - it is more about looks then anything else - but clearly a conversation piece for your desk.

If you were a big fan of the original Mac Cube - then this is also something you want to check out.

Search for E L A G O - elago at kickstarter dot com - or in the show notes for ep 348.

    http://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Headphones-Cancelling-Microphone-Earphones/dp/B00V45K5YQ/

If you look in the Tii App between Eps 346 and ep 347 you will see another App only unboxing - this time for the Silicon Devices Comfort+ Bluetooth headphones.  Make sure to check out the bonus content for that bonus Video.

These were the first ones I tested with my Apple Watch and they paired up and worked excellent.  I wound up using the smallest ear plugs and the smallest hooks - and they really are comfortable - and most importantly to me stay in place - even for a brisk 4 mile walk - and then also a bike ride.  Nice Job Guys - I hate when in ear headphones fall out.  And the battery life was never an issue.

You can also use these with your iPhone if you want - as they have a noise canceling mic - so you can use them to listen to Podcasts and music on your iPhone - no Apple Watch needed - and you can answer and talk on the iPhone with these.

Here are recordings of me making a call from the headsets.

    VOICEMAIL - ROB_Silcon_devices_test.

    VOICEMAIL - ROB_2_Silcon_devices_test_indoor.

As you can hear - they work fine as bluetooth headphones with your iPhone.

I really like the comfort of these - and if you are looking for a pair of Bluetooth head phones to use with your apple watch to go walking, jogging, running, biking or working out in the gym - then these work really well - and I would highly recommend them as a companion to your apple watch - which again is exactly what I was looking for.  And they also work fine with your iPhone for listening to podcasts, music and taking / receiving phone calls.

There is a link to these in the show notes for Ep 348 over to Amazon if you are looking for a pair of headphones for your apple watch to working out with. Look for the link titled - Silicon Devices - Comfort+

Per the Apple Watch - I should point out that the Apple watch does not allow you to talk and listen to phone calls via blue tooth head phones - which was something I was hoping Apple would allow.  I think that is something they need to add in the next major update - if they do then these headphones should be good to go.  It would be great if you are listening to music on your bluetooth headphones via your apple watch and away from your phone in your house - but still able to answer - that you could also talk via bluetooth - rather than have to hold your wrist up like a frame out of an old dick tracy cartoon.  Another example of where answering on your Apple watch and talking would be nice is when doing yard work - with your iPhone in the house you can still make calls. Per anyone questioning when you would need that type of use case.

    Hi Rob,

I know this doesn't have to do with apple, but does the Pebble smart watch have any accessibility features?

    Regards

    Kaitlyn In Pleasant Hill California

Hi Kaitlyn - first off - anything iOS related - means also accessories and apps for iOS devices - so it does not have to be specifically from Apple.  Just like all the kickstarter and 3rd party products we talk about each week - the Pebble definitely has a place on this show.

Now to the important question - does the Pebble smart watch have any accessibility features.  The short answer is yes - kinda.  The longer answer is - not as many as the Apple watch but here is some of what I found out.

There is the Pebblebits firmware - which has larger notification font as one of the options.

I think however if accessibility is a key factor for you for a smartwatch - then the Apple watch is definitely the way you want to go.

That said - I will send out Kaitlyn’s question about accessibility with the Pebble to listeners of the show - that have needed accessibility features and tried the pebble out - what did you experience - and do you have any comparisons to the Apple Watch.  Give us a call - or send us an email.

    Rob,

I am getting a message that I need to perform an update for carrier settings. Do you know what this is for and is it a good idea?

    Mike from California

Hi Mike - this is common to see - is  it a good idea - depends on what the carrier update does - normally it is a good thing.  on a few occasions it has meant the removal of a feature or Network optimization - which means slowing down your connection - but overall the updates are recommended to do - as many of the carrier updates are for stability fixes or bug fixes - like fixing an issue with visual voice mail.  I wish the carriers would make the info more available about what the updates are going to do or fix exactly - but getting that info is very hard to find.  And some times they are just updates for a specific version of an iPhone for a specific carrier.

In General to answer your question it is good to do the updates.  In General that is. How is that for a non-comital answer.

    Hi Rob,

I have noticed a recent problem. I used a keyboard shortcut "work@" to quickly add my work email. I have since left that employer and no longer receive work emails on my phone. I went to settings and deleted that shortcut, but it keeps popping back up. There is no consistent pattern, I will just be typing the word "work" and my old work email auto populates. I go in and delete it again, and after awhile it comes back. Do you or your listeners have any suggestions?

    Regards,

    Brenton N

I then replied and asked him if you tried setting up a short cut for work to equal work to over write the original and he replied

    Hi Rob,

It is funny you say that. I have tried replacing the shortcut multiple different ways, they always end up getting replaced with the original shortcut.

    Regards,

    Brenton

So nope that did not work - if anyone out there has any suggestions for Brenton - please let us know

Send an email or give us a call.

    Hi Rob,

Does you know exactly how the iPhone 6's M8 processor contributes data to the Apple Watch Activity app? In theory, could you take the watch off and still have the app pull data from just the iPhone? Of course I never actually want to take off my Apple Watch, I just want to better understand what's really happening between both of my devices from a fitness tracking point of view.

    Regards,

    -Jason

My understanding is the M8 processor on the iPhone 6 and 6Plus works in combination with the sensor on the Apple watch - so for example if you are walking with the Apple watch on and your iPhone in your pocket - you are not getting two steps counted for each one - it is working together to get your step count.  And from what I read it works to teach your Apple watch what type of distance you are walking.  So it is recommend if you plan to go walking with your significant other or jogging - that the first few times you do so with both your Apple watch and your iPhone - it will then learn via GPS measurements your real distance - and calibrate your Apple Watch so in the future when it is just your apple watch it gives a more accurate number.

Again - you don’t need to have your iPhone with you for it to measure steps or distance - but if you do the first few times you take a walk - in the future you will supposedly get more accurate measurements.

I am doing that now - taking walks with my wife - with my iPhone in my pocket - and I am measuring what it says the distance is for the walks - which right now seems pretty accurate - again my iPhone is with me.  I will then see what it says the distance is with out the iPhone.  Note this only will work if you walk or jog or run.  You can’t leave your phone behind and expect to get good distance readings for bike riding - for that you do need the iPhone and GPS.

    http://www.cnet.com/au/how-to/reset-forgotten-passcode-

    on-the-apple-watch/

Thanks to Dr. John for this next one.  Which is how you can reset a forgotten passcode on the Apple Watch.  Well first off as we learned earlier - sadly - anyone can reset it - and then use it them selves.

But this article is more for those that actually own the device.

First is to reset it from an iPhone.  And from your legally pair to iPhone click on the Apple Watch App - and then go to General and then scroll down and tap on Reset and chose Erase All Content and Settings.

This does return the Apple Watch to its factory fresh state - which yes means Anything on it previously is gone - toast - ABC you later.  And I saw see you later - because the good news is there will be a back up you can restore from once your re-pair it - simple select restore from back up option during the set up.

This is the method I will go over - as that is the way most will want to restore an Apple watch for a passcode they forgot - or you know you could just pick a passcode you will not forget.  Just Sayin.

It is 4 digits - how tough is it to remember?

Thanks to Dr. John for this next one as well - and it is titled - How to Write Awesome Emails for the Apple Watch.

Not how to write them on the Apple watch - but rather write them for the Apple watch.  It goes over how an email will look when it comes in on the Apple watch - it talks about going All plain text for your email blasts.  Which is something I always do.  All these fancy emails with images - they tell me right away - DELETE ME.  And on the Apple Watch - you can see them anyway.  So stick with plain text.

The article has other good advice - this is geared toward Business users - but really anyone wanting to make sure their emails have a good chance of being read and acted upon when viewed on an Apple watch - this is a nice article.

So all you Mailchimp addicts with your fancy graphic rich emails - yeah - this article is for you.

    videos-to-your-iphone-and-ipad-without-jailbreaking/

    Hey Rob,

On iTem 0346 Nick asked about being able to download YouTube videos to your iPhone or iPad without jailbreaking. There is a way using the super capable Workflow app. I've written about how to do it on my site AppChasers.com. Here is an excerpt from my post:

"Every few months an app will show up on the App Store that allows you to download videos from YouTube directly to your Camera Roll. Not long after that, the app will be removed from sale, either by the developer whose received a threat from YouTube or by Apple at the behest of the online video giant. There’s a long list of apps that have fallen victim (most recently Pro Tube lost this feature). The inherent problem isn’t one that’s going to go away anytime soon. If only there were a way to toggle this ability in an app only after it’s been downloaded from the App Store. That way it would pass Apple’s review guidelines and it would be in the hands of users to enable the feature. Well, that’s exactly what the app Workflow does.”

I hope it can be of help to Nick and your other listeners.

    Regards,

    Eric Meister

Thanks Eric and folks there is a link to that article in the show notes for ep 348 at today in iOS dot com.

Hey Rob, listening to iTem 347 now. In regards to features that would like to see in iOS 9; the main thing I would like is a dark theme. I'm the proud owner of a 64 gig space gray iPhone 6 and although I don't mind the bright white user interface, I think a darker theme option would be really nice against my black screen and case. You mentioned a while back that they had a dark keyboard option in a past beta, I wonder why they got rid of that?

Also, WHY do they make it so hard for you to display the different artwork for each Tii episode on the lock screen of the iPhone??

One more thing, might need some help from the audience for this one. I have multiple calendars in my calendar app synced from iCal on my MacBook and only want notifications from certain calendars. For instance, I want to be notified about my reminders calendar but not every event from my work schedule calendar. Is there a way to do this? If so I haven't found it in any of the calendar or notification settings, hope you or the audience can help.

    Regards,

    -AAron in Crockett, CA

    Hi Rob,

Per iOS 9 - Obviously I want to see improvements in stability but 2 actual FEATURES that are sorely needed are:

    1) Public transit directions for Apple Maps. Probably a 50/50 chance this happens. The lack of public transit routing is one of many reasons people use Google Maps instead.

    2) The ability to security lock certain apps. This should have been added back in iOS 1.0.  Imagine how much this would help if your phone ever got stolen.   Sadly, I doubt we'll see this in 9.0 (and yes, this feature is available in Android).

    Regards,

    Brent from Chicago

Hi Rob. I predict new Apple TV will be released in October. What do you think

    Regards,

    Steve from AZ

    Hi Steve,

I predict the new Apple TV will be announced and released at WWDC (as in shipping by the end of June at the latest - but not with App store active yet - and then the App store will be launched in the Fall.  This will get the new Apple TV in the hands of devs to work with via a beta update - and then full launch of updated Apple TV software in October supporting 3rd party apps.

Of course - that is kinda what I said a year ago - and the year before that and I think maybe even the year before that as well.

    Hi Rob

I have an ongoing issue that I wonder have you or your listeners had or  heard of ...

I had an iPhone 6 plus and used a lot for sat nav / music in car as I drive a lot and then some gaming when I'm at home - my phone used to heat up while playing "World of Tanks Blitz" which is an intensive game on the gpu I imagine and as a result would then dim the screen brightness by let's say 25%, doesn't sound like a big issue but in outside bright conditions its is like switching the lights off.

Brought the phone to an Apple Store , they never came across this issue and swapped the handset for me twice - the problem persisted. I the sold the 6 plus and bought the 6 instead and it also dims as the phone heats up. I have read forums about this issue so I know I'm not the only one but I never noticed before on any iPhone or at least to this extent.

Any tips would be appreciated, plead not I don't have auto brightness on, or zoomed mode which were possible reasons for the dimming. I usually have the phone at full brightness as it's connected to the power in my car a lot.

    Greetings from Ireland.

    Regards,

    John

In this segment of how wrong were we have the following quote quote “The iPad is nothing more than a large iPod Touch. It’s lacking a 16:9 screen and while the bezel has to be of a reasonable size to allow for holding the device with your hand without your thumb poking the screen all the time, it’s simply too big. Finally those few people who’ve already used it are saying that having a standard keyboard on a device that you can’t rest easily on your lap and that is intended to be used one-handed is lunacy. Just look at the curved corner keyboards Microsoft introduced with the tablet editions of Windows to see how they should have done it. All this will have come about because Apple have done the R&D and released a product that’s been instantly derided as ugly and not what people want. If I were Steve Ballmer today, I’d be splashing out on an extra skiing holiday. unquote

    new-apple-ios-8-4-release/

iOS 8.4 beta 3 has been released to devs and public beta testers.  And what is new - well support for textbooks developed using iBooks Author for the iPhone is now finally available.  That means the Podcasting 101 iBook is now available for the iPhone - well at least those running beta 3 of iOS 8.4

There are tweaks to the updated / over hauled Music app - with an improved offline music mode that clearly shows which tracks are downloaded and which are stored online.  There is an improved search option which scans your music and those of iTunes radio as well.

But one thing that is not seen yet - is any mention or indication of a Beats based streaming music service.  There are still rumors this will launch at WWDC - but with no hint of it yet in the code base - some are starting to question those rumors.

There are still some bugs in Beta 3 which Apple states - such as:

    • - Siri control doesn’t work in iTunes Radio
    • - AirPlay may prove unreliable
    • - Home Sharing and Genius Mixes are missing
    • - iTunes Radio track skipping may cause crashes
    • - Editing playlists may cause crashes
    • - The new Music app can lose its place in tracks when closed

Nothing overly exciting other than Apple continues to churn out the beta updates - which is a good thing.

    http://9to5mac.com/2015/05/08/apple-watch-heart-

    rate-monitor-accuracy/

Thanks to Aurelian Radu in the Google+ community for the heads up on this next one.  Which is an article from 9 to 5 mac titled - How Accurate is the Apple Watch heart-rate monitor?

Well the answer is very.  Seems a software engineer - Brad Larson - who is also the founder of SonoPlot - extracted the raw data from his Apple Watch and overlayed it with his raw data generated by a dedicated heart-rate monitor and the results are amazing - as the two data sets are almost dead on identical.  with just minor differences.  The device it was compared to was the Mio Alpha and that device has been shown to be 99% accurate when compared to the gold standard of Chest strap monitors.  So in other words - the heart rate monitor on the Apple watch is very very good.  This was also backed up with what the folks at consumer reports found as well.

One thing to point out is right now the Apple Watch is taking samples once per 5 seconds vs the Mio Alpha which checks every 3 seconds - so it is possible via a software update for Apple to check more often if they wanted - but hey with nearly identical results - that may not be needed.

Speaking of it checking your heart rate - Apple does this with two green LED’s on the back of the Apple watch - and I have had it where a couple times after a work out - when I am all sweaty when I took off the Apple watch it was in the midst of a heart rate scan and the green LED’s remained on for a good 20 to 30 seconds after I removed the Apple Watch.  Has anyone else noticed the Green LED’s staying on after they removed their Apple Watch?

As always you can call in feed back to 206-666-6364 - that is 206-moon dog or by sending an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com.

And speaking of feedback - I would love to start getting your feedback on features you would like to see added to iOS 9.0 - which will be announced in less than a month.  What are your wish list features to be added or are you like me just looking for it to be all about stability and streamlining iOS.  To make it more snappy and less buggy.

    VOICEMAIL_Lee_Casper_thanks_recommendation

    Thanks Lee for that feedback.

And We are very happy to have Casper back as a sponsor - Casper is an online retailer and manufacturer of Premium mattresses for a fraction of the price you are used to paying.

Have you ever purchased a mattress by sitting on it for just a few minutes at the store only later to regret it.  That happened with us for my Oldest son's mattress.  We thought we purchased a good mattress - but oh my - we learned we did not - we would lay down with him to get him to go to sleep and as we tried to get up he would hear us and feel us moving and would wake up - very very frustrating. But we were stuck with the Mattress -  However With Casper you get a 100 day risk free trial period.  You don't like it you get your money back and they come and pick it back up and donate it to a charity.  That said - the mattress they sent is great and is definitely not going back. It is a mix of Latex foam and Memory foam. No noisy springs to wake up your kid or significant other when you get up to sneak some girl scout cookies from the pantry.

Casper did an incredible job on the engineering and feel of this mattress - the nights I record episodes - the boys go and sleep with mom - so when I am done I can sleep on his bed now and my back is not all out of whack in the morning.

But just as important as quality is Pricing and the pricing is really great.   Twin Mattresses are just $500, they also have Twin XL for $600, Full for $750, Queen for $850 and then King and Cal King - for  $950.  That is less than half the price my Parents just paid for their King sized mattress and they can't stand their mattress.  Like I said you have 100 days to return it risk free. And if you go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code tii - you will save $50 off those prices.

This is an american made mattress with delivery right now for the US and Canada only and it is free delivery. When said mattress is delivered - it is from UPS - in a squarish box that you think no way is there a mattress in there - But you get a cool little tool to cut open the package and the mattress opens up and expands to form.

As they say You spend 1/3 of your life in bed - ok maybe more if you have Apple TV with Netflix and HBO NOW in bedroom.  And for the cost of an iPad - is it not worth getting the best nights sleep possible - and that is what you will get with Casper or what your kids will get.  Again to Save $50 off of the prices I mentioned go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code t i i - all lower case on the promo code.  again casper dot com / tii - promo code tii to save $50 - thanks Casper for the great mattress for my son and for sponsoring this show.

    Hi Rob,

the mount I use is the MagicMount surface of iPhone 6 and 6+ from Scosche and it's awesome but it's in my Vette and not in an off-road vehicle. The metal plate is placed behind my Apple leather case without actually using the adhesive     The case holds it fine without sticking it to the phone. For $12, it's a cheap test.

    Hi Rob,

I had the same question as one of your recent listeners.  How does one find a reputable app developer? You seemed like you had gotten burned about being approached too many times for developer references. Your answer concentrated on not trying to find someone who would code for free or who would be enticed to share in the profits. I am not a coder and have no chance of developing that skill at this point in life. I have created an application years ago on another platform, with someone who is not interested in IOS. (It is inexplicable why they don't want to develop for IOS.) I know a little about what it takes to create an application. Are there resources to locate a developer that one could remunerate at a reasonable rate and have a good chance of producing a workable product? From previous experiences, I know that there is a lot that goes into coding and producing an application. Concept origination, coding, artistic design and marketing to name just a few of the aspects of app development. I am looking for someone who can code for the IOS platform and who is not going to charge me hundreds of dollars an hour and then not produce a product. I am willing to fit into their working styles to produce a good product.

    Questions for you Rob:

    1. Where does one start in trying to locate an IOS developer? There are lots if developers advertising on the web but unfortunately many seem shady.

    2. What do you think are the three most important questions to ask them that would help screen them?

    3. What is a reasonable range of salary for a developer? This would be for an app individuals would use not an app for a corporation. Think calorie counter not integrated sales force stock tracker.

Hi Corrie - Thanks for the email - and sorry if my answer on the last show came across the way it did.

I have had many people approach me with a “great idea” and ask for a personal intro to a dev.  Later to only find out that they wanted the dev to do all the work for free upfront.

Given that person I mentioned on the last ep does not even listen to the show - I thought it would be a good time to put that point out there.  If you want an App developed your are going to pay for it -or you need to learn to develop on your own.

There is a really good book any one with an idea for an App should read first before approaching a dev - it is called App Accomplished by Carl Brown.  Read that book cover to cover - taking notes and doing what Carl suggests.  It will help your really vet your App before approaching a dev - as far as thinking about how many different screens and getting a good wire frame together.  You will need that when approaching an App dev so they can get a better idea on how much time and effort will be needed on their side - and hence how much to charge you.   Another thing the book really goes over is making sure expectations are really nailed down on both sides. It is a great read.  Again that book is App Accomplished by Carl Brown.

Ok - Step 2 after reading that book is finding a dev.  There are many out there - first you can do a shout out in the google+ community for tii - at todayinios dot com slash community.  When you get replies from there or anywhere else you find a dev - ask for a list of someapps they developed - and then go and look at the reviews in iTunes - read the reviews in detail - if the reviews look positive - download the apps and use them to see how it looks and feels.

Remember be afraid of App reviews where the stars look like the letter C - lots of 5 and 1 star reviews usually means someone paid for the 5 stars - and the 1 star reviews are users.  The Letter L is always bad - as it is all bad reviews.  Look for the letter F - mostly 5 and 4 start reviews.  Again read those reviews and try out their apps.

Then once you find a dev that looks to do what they say they can do - approach them with your idea and see what price they will charge.  Expect at a min to be paying $10k for a simple app - and that number can rise quickly depending on the complexity you have.  Is it possible to get a really simple app done on $10k - yes - but again you need to vet your devs past work.  I have heard of some simple apps done in the $5 to 6k range that worked out ok - but they were very simple.

Once you start adding in social sharing and data base calls and lots of screen - well again the more complex the app the more you are going to pay.  Read the book I mentioned first - it will help you really vet your app idea - and that will save the dev time and effort at least with regards to getting you an RFP completed.

As always if you are an App dev and you are for hire - please email me and make sure to also join our Google+ community.

    Hi Rob

The only way I have seen to disable the annoying "cellular data is turned off" pop up messages when accessing apps, is to leave cellular data turned on for the apps in question, but turn off the main cellular data button at the top of the settings page.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came out was from Robert Spivack who wrote the following

    Quote

D.I.Y. Apple Watch stand.  Call me "frugal" not "cheap".  Re-cycled vegetable crate corrugated box + DeWalt circle cutter + Elmer's wood glue = "Green" stand for my watch, cost < $1.00

Started as a proof of concept, ended up as a stand I actually use.

(The "secret" to DIY watch stand construction is realizing there is no electronics - just a circle cut-out and a slit to hold the Apple-supplied inductive charger and guide the cord.)

Any material - metal, wood, plastic, corrugated box, foam core boards etc. is waiting for the DIY'r with the appropriate crafting/construction skills.

Save your $30 to $50 otherwise spent on a stand for supporting devs and buying their apps :-)

    http://www.gforgames.com/gadgets/kgi-iphone-6s-predictions-47316/

KGI’s Ming-Chi Kou is back - well he never really went anywhere - but he has some more Apple rumors - and this time it is about the next Gen iPhone.

He is first referencing it as an iPhone 6S and 6S+ so not going to the iPhone 7 i.e. new design this year according to Ming.

That said the report from KGI is that the S level upgrade will be a major upgrade.  For the record - I have always said the S level upgrades are bigger than the upgrades to a new number.  Especially when you look at the features and spec changes.

In this round of rumors the first one - is one we have heard before - and that is all the new iPhones will get force touch.  I think that is a safe bet at this point. Not sure that one is even a rumor as much as common sense when you look at what Apple has released already this year.

Per the rumor of a 4 Inch version to join the 6 and 6+ - nope not going to happen this year according to Ming.  That goes counter to a few other rumors stating there would be a 4 inch version - a 6C if you would.

The Processor will move to the A9 processor - duhhhh.  That is hardly a rumor or inside knowledge - that is simply looking at the past 5+ years and drawing a line connecting the dots.

And the iPhones will get 2 GB of Ram.  Again that seems like a duhhh - as it is already at that level in the lasted iPad Air.  Again look at what Apple has done the last few years for the top of the line iPad and how that rolled into the next iPhone.

The Rear camera will go to 12 Mega Pixels up from the current 8 Mega Pixel camera.

There will also be a rose gold color option.

Strangely the report says that if certain yield issues are overcome - the 5.5 Inch 6S Plus might come with Sapphire glass.  Of course they did preface that with if and might.  So lots of wiggle room there.

There is talk about a special 6S Plus edition with the sapphire glass - rather then this being across all the 6S Plusses - Maybe that will be the rose gold version.  That might make sense.  A much more expensive 6S Plus Edition in Rose Gold - to go along with your Apple Watch Edition.  Maybe it will have a price tag in the $2k range - i.e. double the top of the link 6S Plus price.

They also talk about changes to the structural design and housing materials to make it harder to bend.  Previous rumors had hinted at 60% stronger aluminum.  So again - a lot of this seems to be Ming picking and choosing what rumors to put into his report - more so then info from un-named sources.

There was also talk about more accurate Touch ID - but that is pretty vague at best.

Production ramp to start in August.  Nothing shocking there.  Especially as it is expected to roll out the end of September once again - and it is not like Tim Cook ever says when production started anyway.  So a safe rumor to add in.

There will supposedly be an additional microphone added near the Speaker to enhance voice quality.

And the last rumor is There will also be gesture control support - but not sure if that is for both the 6S and 6S plus - or just the 6S plus.  I could see that being just with the 6S plus - as it kind of has one foot in the iPhone world and the other foot in the iPad world.

So lots and lots of items to add to a future bingo card.

Lets not stop at iPhone 6S and 6S + - lets move on to the iPhone 7 and a concept image - thanks to Chris in London for the heads up on this one.

To describe it - the screen extends down and around and under the touch ID sensor.

It has dual back side camera lenses.

The top and bottom bezels are basically gone.  So the screen basically goes to the edges all the way around - which just a tiny sliver at the top for a speaker and camera and sensor.

It has a the similar thin and curved look of the 6 and 6 Plus.

So more an interaction of the current design than a drastic redesign.

Is it pretty - Yup - is it likely - nope.  But like I said - it is pretty.

More Kickstarter projects for the Apple Watch - this next one is the lunatik Epik for Apple Watch.   Lunatik and Epik both spelled with a k at the end.

They have a goal of $100k - and are 85% of the way there with 33 days to go - so they will easily hit their goal.

What the Lunatik is is a quote ruggedly refined wearable companion unquote for your apple watch.

It is an Aluminum case or enclosure for your Apple Watch to make it a more robust device.  You have a choice of the aluminum enclosure with a black silicone sports band for $100 or for $125 you can get the aluminum enclosure with the Matching aluminum link bracelet.

These are just for the 42 MM only version.

This is the same team that about 4 years ago released a watch mod for the small square iPod nano.  So these guys know what they are doing.

    Hey Rob,

On your most recent show, item 346, you read a piece about the kickstarter project Icon. I've been using a similar product called Bumpies for a few months now. A bit more understated than Icon. Just plain, hard rubber corner covers that seem to stay on, no matter what, unless you intentionally remove them. I had an installation problem with one at first. Took it off with absolutely no damage to the phone and the company sent me two (one just in case) Bumpies as a replacement, free of charge. Like Icon, it has a raised, lay on the table design. I will never go back to a full coverage case again.

    Regards,

    Eric in Garnet Valley, Pa.

Thanks Eric for the heads up on Bumpies - link in the show notes for the 6 and 6Plus versions.  But they also have versions for the 5 / 5S and 4 / 4S.

Pricing on these are $24 and they are shipping now. What you get for $24 is 4 bumps protectors, 1 cleaning wipe, 1 alignment sleeve, 1 set of instructions and a two year bumbles replacement warranty.

And they have a nice selector tool on their site where you pick your phone and color and then the choice of color you want for the bumpies - and you can see what it will look like.  I think for the gold iPhone the Black, Grey or White bumpies look best - but they have a bunch of other colors to choose from as well.

Thanks Eric for the heads up - this looks like a nice product offering.

I did send them an email asking if you can use with a glass screen protector - here is their response

    Hi Rob,

Thanks for contacting us.  Per your question, the answer is yes. You can still use the product if there is a glass screen protector. Actually, we even recommend it!

And we created a promo code for your listeners. It is - tii -  It's only able to be used on our official Bumpies.co  website, and it will offer your listeners free shipping until the end of the month of May 2015. The coupon expires after that. If there are any issues with the code, you can let us know. We cannot wait to hear your podcast. Have a great day!

    Hey Rob,

You mentioned that you aren't able to answer the phone call on the iPhone from the Apple Watch.

According to the demo videos on the Apple website you can answer your phone call on the phone from the watch by scrolling up on the digital crown and selecting 'answer on iPhone'.

I'm still waiting for my 42 mm sport, hopefully should be with me soon.

    Kind regards

    Mark G

    Bristol, UK

Hi Mark - Yeah sadly - that does not actually work - it just kind of puts the call on hold - and then you need to go and answer on the phone still.  So it is not a simple one tap answer on the phone.

With the Apple Watch It works like this.

    1. You scroll on the crown

    2. You tap answer on the phone.

    3. You answer on the phone

That is not as simple as on the Pebble where you click answer and it answers on the phone.

Hopefully Apple Fixes this in a future update.  Clearly this is something that can be fixed via software.

    Hey Rob,

I noticed that you talked about the music app "bug" that allowed you to control volume and sometimes playback. Although the music app (on the Apple watch) does seem to have a mild ability to interact with other apps there is a much better option that's actually very simple!

The music app glance. Slide up from the watch face app, then left or right* until you find a playback screen which works essentially like the lock screen on your iPhone. Play/pause, volume control and a display of what your listening to (as in name of episode, and name of podcast when listening to a podcast). For podcasts this even includes the skip 15sec back or forward on the podcast.

I have included a screen capture of this glance on the watch in case you wanted to add this as an example to the tii app.

I've also tried this with several apps and I have attatched a table I created with information about these, feel free to share this on the tii app if you think it's worth while.

    Regards,

    Dan from the UK

Thanks Joe and Dan - and folks if you want to make the glances feature even more useful for Podcast consumption - get rid of everything but the music app controls and overcast if you use overcast - so the only things in glances are the stock screen that is the first one with Airplane mode , silence, do not disturb and Ping your iPhone - which can’t be removed.  And then the music control screen called Now Playing and the Overcast screen.

To do this go to Apple Watch App on your iPhone - select Glances - and then leave the Now Playing and Overcast lines - and delete everything else.

Which is a report that Comex - a jailbreak dev - has managed to hack the Apple watch to get a web browser on it.  And he released a video to prove his prowess.

Of course I am not sure exactly what you want to be browsing on your Apple watch given the small size of the screen.

The chances of Apple adding safari to the Apple Watch any time soon are slightly less than that of a regular character in an episode of Game of Thrones not dying.

    http://www.idownloadblog.com/2015/04/29/10-most-

    wanted-apple-watch-jailbreak-tweaks/

Thanks to Chris in London for this next one  Which is a title of 10 Most Wanted Apple Watch Jailbreak tweaks.

Surprisingly one of them is actually Browse the Web.  Of course their reason for wanting it is - because we can.  As in Can surf with it.  Ummm yeah.

Pull the iPhone out of your pocket and surf the web.  I have other things I would rather do with my Apple watch to drain the battery.

Some of the 10 items in the list that I do agree with.

Custom Watch Faces - Yes - I want back my custom Tii watch face.

Changing the default time out setting for the screen - yes - the biggest frustration with the apple watch is the rapid speed in which the screen goes to sleep.

Playing any audio from your apple watch speaker or via bluetooth headphones from the Apple Watch.  Yes - The Apple Watch should be an Airplay option for an audio speaker source for your iPhone.

Native Apps for the Apple watch to help speed up the speed of the apps.  I think the biggest one would be a native Podcasts app - where episodes are stored natively on the Apple Watch.  Right now to get podcasts natively over - you have to create a smart play list on your computer that then syncs with your iPhone and then syncs to your Apple watch - the next time you are charging it up.  UMMM Yeah - not exactly ideal.  Can you say 2004 is calling and they want iPodder X back.

One thing missing from this - is being able to answer a call on the iPhone from the Apple Watch.

The sooner the jailbreakers start adding these things - the sooner Apple will get around to adding them natively.

After all one thing Jailbreaking has proven to be over the years is a great testing bed for future iOS native features.

    apple-watch-using-your-iphone/

Thanks to all that sent in this next one - and it is a tip for those with the Apple Watch - and how to set it up to easily unlock it.  There is an option - if you go to the Apple Watch app on your iPhone - then select Passcode - and then turn on Unlock with iphone.  What happens is the next time you put your Apple watch on - to unlock it - you simply put your finger on touch ID and unlock your phone - and it automatically unlocks your Apple watch - until at least the next time you remove it from your wrist.

This is especially nice for those with mobility issues - where tapping in a 4 digit code on the 38 mm screen especially can be a very big chore if not downright impossible.   Now just place your finger on touch ID - and it unlock both your iPhone and your apple watch.

Thanks to Muscled Nerd for the heads up on this next one - which is the company red park dot com - They offer cabled that are used by app devs and businesses to connect external devices to the iPhone and iPad.

They now have a new Ethernet to Lightening cable available.

Mind you - you need apps that specifically know what to do with said cable and it will run you $89.

Essentially this is for field service applications.  And you must be using Apps that specifically are designed wit the RedSocket SDK.

More info at the link in the show notes for ep 347 for red park dot com

I was looking at their products and they even have a lightening to Serial cable that connected to RS-232 serial devices at baud rates up to 115.2 kbps.  Very cool and nerdy.

    Hi Rob,

I ordered the Apple Watch Sport on 28th April after a call to Apple confirmed that there  is no  available date for when the Device will be available to purchase in the Apple a stores.

I then made an appoint with my nearest which is 60 miles away so that I could be sure that the device is suitable for me as I have a visual impairment.

I arrived for my appointment on Saturday.  The assistant strapped a watch onto my wrist and I was shown a rolling demo. I told her that I wanted to try the accessibility features but she said that they don't have a fully operational device as all in-store devices are locked down and she couldn't demonstrate the features that I was I interested in.  I expressed my dissatisfaction and she said she would pass my feedback on.

    Hi Rob

Thanks you for all you do (how often do I hear that on the podcast?!)

I have had the Pebble Steel since last July and have loved it. I saw the original on Kickstarter and didn't think much of the plastic case. When the Steel came out I really liked the look of it.

Now along comes the Apple Watch, I like the look of the watch, but because I have actually been using the Pebble for 9 months now I know what I like about having a connected watch - notifications on your wrist. That's the main feature I like about having a "smart watch".

The Apple Watch may have many more features that will outshine the Pebble, but in all honesty I don't think I'll use the extra flashy features. Battery life is a real turn off, my Pebble Steel gets 5-6 days comfortably and I would hesitate on getting something that lasts such a short time. I can get a couple of days on my 6 Plus if I wanted to (could probably stretch it to three if I was really frugal).

Another thing I don't like about the Apple Watch is the look of it, I don't like the look of it - the case that is. It just doesn't look all that robust. I like the look and feel of the Steel over the Apple Watch. I'm a working man, not a fashion model....

I'm actually really looking forward to getting the Pebble Time OS on my Steel.

I will be waiting for the next version / revision of the Apple Watch before I consider it. I haven't completely written off the Apple Watch yet, gen 2 will be even better. I don't hate it, I just don't want it.

    Regards,

    Paul M

Hi Rob, thought I would drop you a line about the issue I am having with my original Kickstarter Pebble watch.

Every time I get an alert on the Pebble the screen goes crazy, almost unreadable.

Sometimes simply by pressing a button the screen will go back to the previous screen ok, but often it will stay jumbled up, see screen shot.

I went on line to see if I was alone and discovered it seems quite a common problem.

I followed the instructions on line which were to send them a screen shot along with various specific pieces of information via the support function of the IOS app (the online webpage is ok for reporting issues but there is no function for attaching a screen shot so you have to do it via the App).

I got a response quickly from Pebble saying they were now going to send me a replacement even though mine was one of the original Kickstarter ones from a couple of years ago.

I haven’t received it yet, but have had shipping tracking number given to me so know its on its way.

I think that this is superb service and have now pledged on Kickstarter for one of the new ones also.

I hope none of your listeners have the same issue, but if they do at least Pebble is a tech company who recognise that things go wrong and are willing to sort the problem out.

    Hi Rob

I have a friend who works for big company . He have access to Apple Watch for the last 2-3 months. Some specs for You. Battery is not a problem "all day combined" should be ok for average person for whole day. 42mm one work around 1 hour longer. He says it's noticeable but not much. If You looking for retina display, You will be disappointed. Resolutions are: 38mm is 272x340 pix, 42mm is 312x390 pix. The prototype they have had to be in the building all the time. If You get it out of the building, gps (from connected iPhone I presume since watch do not have gps) would notify Apple right away. They have final software (for the time) and build of the watch itself was almost final, but already really good.  Regards,

    - Peter from Chicago.

    Hi Rob,

In episode 341, Mitch mentioned an issue with Bluetooth audio skipping. I wonder if he has a Pebble. His issue could be similar to the one I wrote in about in episode 340.

In about 45 minutes I will be climbing into a casper bed if all goes well with the post production. So a big thanks again to Casper dot com for their support of Tii - and if you go to casper.com slash tii - and use promo code tii - all lower case - you will save $50 off a mattress shipped right to your door - again go to casper.com slash tii and use promo code tii.

And Before we go today I want to remind you to send in your feedback to the show - 206-666-6364 - that 206-moon-dog - or record your feedback and email it to the show at today in iOS at gmail dot com - The  feedback can be a question or comment per something someone said on this episode or it can be a question or rant you have about something else.  An App or product review - good or bad - as long as it is iOS related - it is welcomed.  I am always looking for new Artwork to feature that you created on an iOS device - just put some Tii branding on it and send it in.  And of course we are always looking for more music created on an iOS device to play on the show.  This is your show and your feedback is greatly desired.  And don't forget to check out our Moderated Google Plus community by going to todayinios dot com slash community.

AND I am down to just one song in my queue - so if you have some music created on an iOS device - please please please send it in.

And finally there is the Tii App which is now Free to you.  Search for Tii in the iTunes App Store - it is the best way to consume the show and to get push notifications each time a new episode of Tii is released.  Please go right now and download the Tii App - Did I mention it is free.

And that folks is going to do it for us today - Well Except for a bunch of more voicemail messages about listeners experiences with Apple Watch.

HERE IS A BONUS SEGMENT This is  an ARTICLE I WROTE FOR This Months PODUTAINMENT Magazine - AS it relates to podcast consumption via the Apple watch I thought I would include it as an audio segment here.  THIS is NOT my best work - and very likely is my worst article to date - simply because there was not a lot of good things to say. But here goes:

Prior to the Apple Watch release there was the hope that the device would work as a nice remote on your wrist for controlling podcast playback - and thus spurring even more podcast consumption by listeners.  And even the hope you could store podcasts in that 2 GB of available space for MP3 files.

And then there was the realty of the Apple Watch launch and while there were quite a few different native apps included, one sadly that was noticeably missing was an Apple Watch App for the Podcasts app.  This means there is no native way for podcast listeners to chose, control and playback podcasts via their Apple Watch.

Yes Apple does allows up to 2GB of mp3 files to be stored on an apple watch for native playback when away from your iPhone.  But getting a podcast into that list harkens back to 2004.  You must first create a smart play list on iTunes on your computer that is sync’d to your iPhone and then you select that play list to sync to your apple watch - but it will only sync with the Apple Watch when the Apple watch is being charged up.  2004 is calling and they want iPodderX back.  Yeah this is not something we are going to get many if any podcast listeners to do.

How do you consume podcasts with an Apple watch easily? Well, luckily Marco Arment with Overcast was on the ball and released Apple watch support with the launch of the Apple watch.

His implementation is clean and easy to use.  First make sure you are subscribed to the podcasts you are interested in on your iPhone in the Overcast app.  Then on the Apple Watch launch the overcast companion app.  Next Force Touch on the screen and from there you can scan through the podcasts you are interested in - select an episode and start playing it all from the controls on the Apple watch.

With the actual “playing” happing on the iPhone. One thing that the Overcast App can not do is adjust the volume of playback - but the music app on the Apple watch can.  The easiest way to get to it is via glances - swipe up to bring up glances and then at the now playing screen simple turn the digital crown to raise or lower the playback volume.

If you are a hardcore podcast listener - you can remove all the other items from your glances screen except for the Now Playing screen and then add in the Overcast screen to glances - this makes glances your own personal podcast control center.  As a Podcaster make sure to mention to your Apple watch listening audience that they can now play back podcasts via the free Overcast App.  Is this ideal - heck no - Native is always preferred - and this really just means right now - the Apple Watch will not be increasing Podcast playbacks.

That all said, OverCast is not the only app you can use to control podcast playback - you can actually launch an episode on the podcasts app on your iPhone - and then using the glances screen for Now Playing you can control the volume of that episode that is playing and even pause and and un-pause the episode.  But you can not go through and select different podcasts.

Another app you can use is the TuneIn App - and from that App you can select different podcasts and episodes and start and stop episodes.  Again with you using the Now Playing screen in glances to control volume.

Sadly Apple Watch is a major update or two away from really helping podcasting.  In the mean time you can spread the word to your listeners that there are ways to use the Apple Watch to control podcasts -

just not natively - and not easily if they want to take podcasts with them on the Apple watch for a jog without their iPhone.  Possible - Yes - easy - No.

For Promo codes - On Ep 345 we offered up chances to win promo codes for THE APP - Merces - Personal Tip Calculator - a bunch of words. We will be giving those out early this week - for more info on this app go back and listen to the beginning of Ep 345.

For Promo Codes This week we have promo codes for the App Slender Man Origins 3,  Here is the written review from the dev:

Hi everyone! We're Bigzur, an independent game developer team. Many of our fans have been asking if there will be another game about Slender, and now it's finally time for the sequel! This game, Slender Man Origins III: Abandoned school is our third installment in the series. The story is about a girl, followed by Slender Man in her nightmares, as she tries to escape from him and save the souls of the children already captured by the Slender Man. The game features improved graphics, atmospheric sound effects, small game events, full voice-acting and a new level-randomizing feature, which makes sure you can't play one level in the same manner twice. Doors get locked, corridors become sealed, while new paths open each time you start a game. The levels themselves have multiple floors and multiple ways to reach every room, giving both you and Slender freedom to choose your way. Even if Slender is off your track, you shouldn't stay for too long - your sanity will slowly escape you, though you can fight it by finding medicine throughtout the level. Finally, use headphones for the best experience. Thanks, and we hope you have fun playing Slender Man Origins III!

Thanks to the devs for their written review of their App - Slender Man Origins 3 and for sending in the promo codes to give away.  Folks if you would like a chance for a promo code for this app - send an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com and put  SLENDER in the subject line.  We will be giving those away later next week.

A QUICK REMINDER if you are an App developer or an iBook Author email me if you want your app or iBook featured in the promo give away segment We Just need the 5 promo codes or more to give away. simply email me at today in ios @ gmail.com and please include a 60 sec or less audio review of your app or iBook - indicating you are the dev or author.  Also when you send in the promo codes - please make sure to let me know when they expire.

    Hi Rob,

You do NOT have to open Passbook app to use Apple Pay. Double click on button (not crown) and it comes up. How much easier can it be?

    Regards,

    Janet

    Hi Rob,

I’m sure you’re receiving several of similar emails regarding this. You don’t have to open Passbook on your  Watch and then double click Friends button in use  Pay. Just double click Friends button at any time and your card will come up and be ready to pay.

The double click doesn’t work for me since I can’t click it fast enough. Hopefully they add an accessibility option to allow for a slower click.

    Regards,

    Darrin

    Greetings Rob:

I just finished listening to your first review of your Apple Watch and you commented on the functionality of accessing Apple Pay was clunky. It is by far much faster and easier to bring up Apple Pay on the watch just by double tapping on the side button... and there it is, your default card all ready to be scanned. Please add this to your .pdf list of tips & tricks for the Apple Watch.

    Regards,

    Bruce T

And from Mark L, and Kareem H as well.

OK - Yup - I was wrong - it is actually very easy to use ApplePay on your Apple Watch.  As they mentioned just double tap on the side button and regardless of what app you had running - it will bring up apple pay on your Apple watch and then you just tap your wrist to the payment unit - and it registers as paid.

    releases-ios-8-4-beta-2-to-developers-

    with-revamped-music-app/

Last week - Apple released iOS 8.4 beta 2 to devs and iOs 8.4 Public Beta 1.  Looks like Apple will keep making the very first beta a devs only release - and then wait at least until the second beta to see how things are going before releasing the public beta.

Most of the changes from beta 1 to beta 2 of 8.4 seem to be bug fixes and performance enhancements and pretty much that is it.

But if you are one in the public beta group you can go and get the 8.4 beta now.

    watch-options-14-force-touch-tips-

    your-wrist#slide11

For those without an Apple watch or any plans for an Apple Watch - note there is going to be a bunch more Apple Watch news and tips this episode - but it is not ALL apple watch.  This first story while Apple watch specific - is about force touch - and given Apple added force touch to the macbook - there is a really good chance we will see Force touch on the next iPhone - so in other words pay attention and don’t be so quick to hit that 30 sec jump forward button.

For those that have not experienced force touch - it is kind of like taking your touch on the screen to 11.

With the Apple native Apps on the Apple watch when you do that in most screens you will get access to hidden features / settings.

iMore has an article going over just some of those.  Like the one I mentioned on the last episode - where you force touch on the watch face to get to the screen where you can change and customize the watch.

I will not go over all of them - I will link to the article.

But here are some others I found that were not mentioned.

In the Music App if you are on the play screen - when you force touch - you have the options of shuffle, repeat, source, and airplay.  under source if you have sync’d up music to your apple watch you can choose the apple watch or you can choose the iPhone.  If you choose the Apple watch - you have to have a bluetooth head set paired with the apple watch.

For Airplay it did not seem to find my AppleTV.  It just listed the iPhone.   Then I realized that Wifi was turned off on my iPhone - so I turned wifi on for my iPhone - and then the option to airplay music to Apple TV showed up. One other note with the music app - the digital crown is used to adjust the volume.

From the Twitter App - if you force touch - it will allow you to create a new tweet.  Same with the Message App.

Not all Apps have force touch features hidden - the Stock app does not appear to have any - nor do the Phone app or the workout app or Instagram or Tunein Radio.

But many do - so next time you are in one of the Apple Watch apps - try force touch and see what hidden features you can find.

Like in the Overcast App - if you are using this one - go to an Episode of Today in iOS - and on the play screen - force touch.  you will see two hidden options - effects and recommend.  Please tap on Recommend for obvious reasons.

Per effects - you can turn on smart speed, voice boost and also change the speed of playback.  So Marco added a few nice features there via force touch.

This actually leads us to the this email message

    Hello Rob,

I was wondering if the Apple watch can control the playback of podcasts?  I mean can it pause and start a podcast using either the Apple podcast app or another 3rd party app?  Can it control playback volume? This is important to me since I do a lot of hiking and have the iphone tucked away in a pocket.

Thanks for all the good work.

    Regards

    Jim K from Morrison Colorado

Well Jim - right now the Apple Podcasts App does not actually have a Watch App.  HOWEVER - here is a little trick I found.  If you start a podcast on your iPhone with the Podcasts App.  and then go and launch the music App on the Apple Watch - you will be able to start and stop the play back - and via the digital crown you will be able to adjust the volume.  Note sometimes the play / pause does not work.  But the volume control does seem to work.

And you know what this same trick will work with the Tii App.

So it seems if you have an app that is playing back audio on your iPhone - when you launch the Music App - it can be used to control the volume and some of the time control play and pause.  But you might have to tap play / pause a few times to get it to work.

Now Jim if you want an app that works all the time like it is supposed to for listening to Podcasts then the Overcast App will be a key one - you just will not get volume control.

But you can launch Overcast on your apple watch find the show and episode you want and hit play.  Then go and launch the Music app and control the volume.  So it is a two app combo to do what you are looking for.  I now keep the Overcast App and the Music App next to each other on my Apple Watch.

By the way this may be a temporary solution - as it may be a bug on the Music app allowing it to control other apps - lets hope no one from Apple listening right now goes and reports this “Bug”.  Because as I see it this is not a bug but rather it is a feature.

    Hi Rob,

So how do I bulk delete text messages on my watch, any idea?  I get several dozen per day.

Not only can’t I find a way to bulk delete, but it seems like each deletion requires a TWO step process!

    Thanks and Regards,

    Steve in Port Jeff

    I replied to Steve

From the main clock screen - swipe down from the top.

And then force touch and choose - Clear All - which is the big X in a circle.

I think this is what you are looking for.

Thanks Rob! Wow that is cool.  But if you go to the messages app on the phone you will see that they are still there.

All the text messages just keep piling up in messages.

    REgards,

    Steve

    Hi Rob,

At my son’s track meet last weekend while timing the 100m race, I noticed a shortcoming of the default stopwatch app.  The problem is that the watch goes into sleep mode a few seconds after pressing the start timing button.  So, you need to make sure you keep the watch screen active so that you are ready to stop timing.  Perhaps a software update will resolve this, but I’m not holding my breath.

    Regards,

    —Mark

    Hey Rob,

I received my 42MM Apple watch sport on Friday 4/24 and have been enjoying it thus far.  I have a weird thing that is happening.

My wife and I share Apple ID's but have each of our devices to send message from their perspective numbers.

When I send a drawing to my friend's Apple watch the number that appears is my wife's number.

If I send a default text message, a voice transcribed message or animated emoji, the number that appears on his watch is my phone number.

I unpaired by watch and restored it to factory settings, Then re-paired the watch with my iphone and have the same issue.

I realize that I can have my wife create her own Apple ID and add her to family sharing, but I'd rather not have to go through the pain of redownloading all her apps.

I have already contacted Apple Support, but am curious if anyone else is seeing this.

    Thanks

    Howard

And Tim Galloway in the Google+ community replied - quote It's not the Apple ID , it's the iCloud ID, just have your wife use her own ICloud ID, she can stay signed into iTunes Store with the ID you currently share unquote

    Thanks Tim.

    http://www.cnet.com/news/11-surprises-i-

    learned-about-the-apple-watch/

A couple of episodes ago I mentioned an article from CNET titled 11 surprises I learned about the apple watch - and this was from a writer that was given an pre-release Apple watch to test out.

So I wanted to re-visit that article now that I have almost two weeks with my wrist under the Apple watch.

One item was Some taptic sensation were too subtle and you needed to make it Prominent Haptic as necessary - and Yup - I felt the same way - the normal settings were just not jarring enough to notice all the time - basically you need to turn it up to 11 to really notice it.  Hopefully via software update that will get even more prominent.

Per vibrations - the pebble has the Apple watch beat.

He also found siri very useful - and I agree - I think the siri integration is where the Apple watch clearly trumps the pebble.  If I want to check the score of the royals game or the starting time - it is a simple query to siri - and I have my answer.

He found it shocking you can not start and stop calls on your iPhone - I agree - that is shocking and a major oversight.

So after having the Apple watch for almost two weeks - I would have to see - Scott Stein’s article was pretty good.  Link in show notes.

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2015/04/29/

    apple-watch-component-defective/26593575/

Oh the power of link Bait - if you have listened before you probably have heard me bemoan the practice known as link baiting - and oh boy do we have a doozy this time. Here is the title Quote Apple Watch Component found defective, report says unquote - and that is from USA Today. Yikes - makes it sound like something in your apple watch is defective - right. Well NO. Do you remember that exercise you had to do in high school for one of the standardized tests - it was where you read a few paragraphs and then had to pick the title that best matched what your read. Well per this article - that title would have gotten you a failing grade if you picked it. Here is what the title of the article should have been quote lack of key component limited Apple watch supply at launch unquote.

That is right - there were no Apple Watches shipped with the faulty component - it was something Apple found well before shipping started - and it was with the taptic engine from one of their two suppliers - the one from China.  Apple supposedly found during accelerate life testing - that the taptic engines from china failed to often.  While the ones from their Japanese supplier were fine - and that is the only one that went out to consumers - again this is not about a component in your Apple watch that was found defective - it was a component that never made it in your apple watch as it was discovered to be defective in accelerated life testing prior to mass production.  And this is one of the key reasons that Apple did not have more Apple watches available at launch.

So Shame on your USA Today for the purposefully misleading title to your article - or what we call link bait journalism.

Right now the Made for Apple Watch program is just for band designers - but there is speculation it will soon be opened up to 3rd party charger and stand designers and other accessories to the Apple watch which is well an accessory to the iPhone.

However no word on what that hidden port is - and if 3rd party’s can access it - but there are others out there claiming to have straps coming that take advantage of that port to offer faster charging options - but is sound like they will not be getting that official Made for Apple Watch - MFAW - seal of approval.

    http://www.techboom.co.uk/apple-

    confirms-tattoos-mess-with-the-iwatch/

One thing that is not made for Apple watch is Tattoos.  According to Apple quote - Permanent or temporary changes to your skin, such as some tattoos, can also impact heart rate sensor performance. The ink, pattern, and saturation of some tattoos can block light from the sensor, making it difficult to get reliable readings. unquote.

So what are your choices - well you could move it to the other wrist if it is not inked up. but if the top both wrists are inked up - your next alternative for getting a heart beat reading is via a wireless bluetooth hear rate monitor you can pair to your apple watch.

Some have asked about wearing it on the bottom or inside of your wrist - Apple does not recommend that and says the readings are not as accurate on the inside of the wrist.  Others that have tested it on the inside of the wrist have found during a cardio workout the readings to not match up to cardio equipment - but simple sliding it to the top of the wrist as recommended - brought the Apple watch back in sync with good 3rd party cardio monitors.

    Hi Rob,

You haven't really opined yet about iOS v8.3. Reviews seem mixed. I've held off for now, waiting for a thumbs up from you. Can you tell us what you think on your next podcast?

    Jim K

    Yes - Update.

Also have people asking about my opinion of the Apple watch.

    So here goes.

I really do like my Apple Watch a lot - I wear it all day every day.  And I have not even started trying it out with bluetooth head phones yet - that will be this week. More on the next episode with regards to that.  Also look for an unboxing video in the Tii app for the bluetooth headphones I received to test out.

So is the Apple Watch for Everyone - absolutely not.

First off - do you even want something on your wrist?  If the answer is no - stay away.  Because once you get it - you will find yourself compelled to keep it on your wrist all the time.

Assuming you are someone that wore a watch - should you get the Apple Watch or the Pebble.  That really comes down to what you want to do with it.

If your primary need is for a glances feature - where you look down to see a new message or email or phone call that is coming in or the time or temp.  Well the Pebble does that just fine and is a lot cheaper and has a significantly better battery life.

If you however are looking for a device that is more than a remote screen for your iPhone - something that is interactive - where you can answer a call and talk via the watch , where you can reply to text messages or send a tweet or ask siri a basic question - where you can actually get it to work with your phone to take pictures.  And where you can measure your heart rate and your steps and tie it all back into the Health app - then the Apple Watch will trump the Pebble.

If you are looking for a device where you don’t need the iPhone and can go out jogging and listen to music while on the jog - and have it measure your steps and heart rate at the same time - then clearly the Apple Watch is for you.

Is the Apple watch perfect - no - is it better than the pebble - in most cases yes - but not in all cases.  I will say this - I have not turned on my Pebble since I had my Apple Watch - but I will add - the Pebble did seem to handle receiving push messages better for Texts and emails - and allowed me to answer my phone on my phone via the pebble - which to me is the biggest missing feature at this time on the Apple watch - and something I would guess they will address in a future software update.

So am I recommending it for everyone - NO.  But for many if not most iPhone users - it will provide an extra level of interaction with your iPhone that will allow you to keep your iPhone tucked away a little more than you currently are doing.

And I do believe as apps develop for it - you will see more and more use cases to justify the purchase of one.  It is still early in its lifecycle and the number of apps are very small now compared to where we will be by the end of the summer.

And if you are still on the fence - don’t feel bad - it is not like you can walk into a store and impulse buy one yet anyway.  Keep listening to future episodes and we will have more and more feedback - good and bad on the Apple watch experience I am sure.

I had a couple of people mention they missed out on the free monthly trial of HBO Now - Yup - that monthly trial ended at the end of April.  However if you signup now - you will get a free 7 day trial.  I did signup as I mentioned and did so via my Apple TV - now when I want to also look at HBO Now on my computer - you have to select the choice where you signed up via Apple TV - and use the same emails address when re-registering - it does make you re-register if you want the access on the computer.  but not re-pay.  At least I hope not.  But just because you sign up on Apple TV - does not mean your username and password will work on an iOS device or the computer right away - you do need to go via your computer and re-register.  You might be able to re-register on your iOS device - but I did not find it.  And stopped looking once I did it on the computer.  Any way - I am now into season 5 on Game of Thrones when I work out via my Computer and Season 1 with my wife when we bulk watch on the Apple TV.  Kind of fun watching at two time lines.

    Hey Rob,

Each episode you mention that the artwork for that episode can be seen in iTunes.  For me that’s true but I have to kind of hunt for it by going into Get Info, otherwise I just see the attached.  I think in the past that the TII podcast icon used to change each episode but now the attached has been that way for months.  Is there a way I can automatically see each episode’s artwork without having to go digging for it (i.e. a way for the podcast icon to change each week)?

    Thanks/regards,

    Rob

    Hi Rob,

In the Tii App it is easy to see the artwork.

iTunes has made it more and more difficult with each update.

And in the Podcasts app you can't see it at all.

Nothing I can really do on that front - as it is an iTunes / Podcasts UI issue / change.

But on the Tii App and at Facebook page and google+ community I make sure to put the artwork for each episode for all to see.

And I just started an Instagram account (finally) to also put the artwork out to after each episode.

I have a few recent episodes up already - and will work to get more of the older episode artwork up there as well.  Please make sure to follow todayinios on instagram if you are a user.

Rob, I have a question about iCloud Photo Library.... I just don't understand it fully! Why all my photos on iCloud sync to my iPhone 6 plus? It's more than 45 gig of photos that I don't need. Also I have the same iCloud account with the wife but if I select iCloud library on her phone... She would get my pics! So how can I save her pics without selecting to sync to iCloud? Or can I upload them to iCloud but not sync mines to her phone? I don't know... it's just so complicated and I feel apple made it worst! Anyway, love the show! Take care!

    Hey, Rob and Listeners!

Has anyone bought or used a flash drive designed for use with iOS (with a lightening port)? It appears that the best reviews are posted for SanDisk.

I was considering buying one, even though they are a bit pricey. The added storage space and convenience might be a good thing, although Dropbox and other cloud services may negate the need for such devices.

    What do you all think?

Thanks for ALL you do, Rob!

    Regards,

    - Tammy

Hi Tammy - on a past episode we talked about the iStick - this is something that will work with the lightening port.

    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/istick/

    id590694047?mt=8

Pricing runs from $80 for an 8GB version to $350 for a 128 GB version. They also have 16 and 32 and 64 gb versions in between those price points.  Just google - istick  - i s t i c k - and there is an app you need to use with it that is free in the app store.

One one side it is a lightening dongle and on the other side it is a standard USB dongle.  Again something we talked about and got feedback on in a previous episode.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came out was from Caryl Goodman who said the following

    Quote

Can someone tell me, does the new Watch actually count your steps?

    Unquote

Steve Russel replied with - Yes displays them in the Activity App.

Mark Page said - from the users guide - quote Your iPhone GPS allows Apple Watch to achieve even more distance accuracy. For example, if you carry iPhone while using the Workout app on a run, Apple Watch uses the iPhone GPS to calibrate your stride.   The watch can used stored data to calculate distance and probably estimates stride from your weight and height inputs when no GPS is available such as indoors and when the watch is not connected to the iPhone. unquote.

Seems the Apple watch does do a good job at measuring steps - as Consumer reports tested it while using someone with an actual counter ticking down for each step - and the Apple watch was very accurate.

And since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Also from the community - I liked this post from Kareem Haskett

quote I discovered an excellent feature on the Apple Watch. Because the watch receives and delivers info from the Health app, it allows its info to be pushed into the Jawbone UP app and vice versa, since the Jawbone UP app also received and delivers info to the Health app. Since I have the watch now, I no longer wear the Jawbone as a step counter since the watch is tracking that for me. When I go to bed, I plug the watch in and put the Jawbone UP on so that it can track my sleep. All of this info is automatically pushed into the Jawbone UP app for me to view and share with my connections. Another cool feature is that the activities app on the watch tracks activities from your other apps like runkeeper since they all write to the Health app. I originally thought that I would have to use the workout app for it to track my exercises.

    Thanks Kareem

    http://www.snazzymujadid.com/2015/05/apple-is-booming-in-europe-at-googles.html

Some good news for the iOS world from Kantar Worldpanel - whom show that iOS is increasing market share in key European nations - mostly at the expense of Android.

From Q1 2014 to Q1 2015 - the iPhone increased its market share in Germany, Britain, France, Italy and Spain from 18.6% to 20.3%.  While Android dropped from 71.5% to 68.4%.  Still it is an over 3 to 1 ration Android to iOS in those 5 countries.

Of course once you start talking profit share - then all those numbers are meaningless because Apple dominates that part of the equation.  Where Apple has almost all of the profit in the celluar market.  And at the end of the day - it is all about profits - not market share - but still nice to see a bump in market share as well.

    http://www.phonearena.com/news/Apples-iOS-eats-into-Androids-market-share-in-the-U.S._id69061

But you know what - Comscore is not going to let Kantar get all the attention - so they released their numbers as well.

What they found in the US - In December 2014 for total Smartphone subscribers - Android was 53.1% to iOS’s 41.6% - but by Mar 2015 - Android had dropped to 52.4% and iOS had risen to 42.6%.   Again that is in the US only.  If you look at Apple vs Sammy in the US it is Apple with 42.6% vs Sammy with 28.3%.  Apple again going up one point in that last quarter while Sammy dropped 1.4 % points.

In the US if you are looking at the top of the smartphone market - Apple really dominates - as a lot of the that 53.1% Android scored was on the low side of the price pie.

    Thought this article was neat.

Thanks Chelsea for the link to the article titled - Blind Gamers Are Embracing Developers Who Have an Eye for Accessibility.

They point out in the article per the title - that some devs of games are making their apps more accessible.  And one such app is King of Dragon Pass - A $9.99 app.

One comment about that game was this quote "It's the best example of a formerly inaccessible PC game made fully playable on iOS thanks to Apple's VoiceOver screen reader. unquote.

Another app they mentioned is the game - A Dark Room - Just $0.99.

And there are others mentioned in the article - it is definitely worth a read if you or someone you know is visually impaired and looking for some apps that are well designed to take advantage of iOS’s accessibility features.

Thanks to Chris in London for this next one.

Which is about Apple giving access to some Add devs to try out the new App Analytics tool for the App store.  This is something announced at WWDC last year - so you know talk about getting it out in the 11th hour or in this case the 11th month.  Anyway this tracks how people find a devs app to how long they use them.

It also tracks traffic to an apps page and lets them know if they are downloading or not.  Obviously if lots of people are visiting your page and few are clicking download - you have some meta data or price adjustments to make.  But if no one is visiting your page - then you have some marketing adjustments to make.

I know I look forward to seeing this info for my Tii App and other apps.

Right now it is just being offered to a small number of devs - and you needed to request early access.  If anyone has been given access - please call or email your feedback - I will not mention you name or app if you don’t want me to.

Thanks again to Chris in London for this next one.

And hey it is rumor time - which means no Apple Watch info.  Nope this time it is about the Apple TV.

One of the key parts of the rumor is that the Apple TV remote will be totally redesigned - with just two buttons - but with a touchpad.  It will be wider - but around the same length and thickness.

The Apple TV is supposed to be announced and launched at WWDC.

And the Apple TV itself will be thinner than the current unit.

Again it is rumored it will not support 4K video but will have an A8 Chip inside - and it will be supporting a future role out of Apples upcoming Web TV service offering and its music streaming service.

Some however think the Apple Remote may not be changing - rather staying as is or very close to it.  They claim a touch pad would make it more complex and goes against the main design principle of minimalist design.

That said - Apple has a long way to go to catch up to the Google TV remote with its 78 buttons that when I showed my wife a picture of it - she said she would shot me if I had that as a remote for our TV.

    http://appleinsider.com/articles/15/05/03/apples-129-ipad-will-feature-bluetooth-stylus-force-touch-nfc-more-source-says

Hey more rumors - this time - the iPad maxi - or the iPad Pro or the iPad 12.9” version.  And the rumors on it this time are it will include force touch - which is a safe bet - since that seems to be the way of the future for Apple.

It would also have a bluetooth stylus with pressure sensitivity to support force touch.

It would also have a USB-C connector and NFC.

No word on when it would be released and if the USB-C connector is in place of the Lightening port or in addition to it.

If there is a USB-C port - my guess is it will be in addition to it.

That said - I could see there being two different Lightening ports - one for landscape docking and one for Portrait docking to make it easier to use with bluetooth keyboards which will be key in any corporate use case.

Google released a report or ebook titled - Android Security 2014 Year in Review.

One interesting stat I found was this.  0.5% of devices had a PHA installed.  What is PHA - it stands for Potentially Harmful Application.  And it is only mentioned 80 times in this report.

But hey 0.5% is a small number right - well no - it is a small % of a large number - as they also talked about over 1Billion devices - meaning 5 Million Android Devices have a PHA.

Oh and if you are in Russia then there are around 3.5% of the devices with a PHA installed if you don’t look at units that side load apps.

Those that do - that number is around 5% for Russia and almost 10% for China.

Yeah - it was an exciting read.  If you are suffering from insomnia - link is in the show notes for Ep 346 at todayinios dot com.

Hi TH - The availability is July - they said the price was more professional grade.  Was not sure what that meant - but I went and found it on line - ummm - yeah.  Best price so far I found was $499 - with a quote list price unquote of over $600. Yikes.  Ok - that was a tad bit more than I expected.  Sorry about that.  Or better to wait some time - and see if the price comes down.

    Hi Rob,

I am a devout Apple fan and have been following your podcast for a very long time and just finished listening to 344 - thanks for all you do for the community!

I'm always upgrading to the latest iOS devices and whilst I'm not disappointed with the products, I'm getting disgruntled that the features that encourage me to upgrade my devices often never come to fruition outside of the USA.

There's constantly talk of new features, but here in the UK we still don't have iTunes Radio or apple pay. Already there's talk of iOS 9 yet some of the main features of iOS 7 and iOS 8 still don't work in the UK!

Come on Apple - spend some time bringing us the features we've paid for!

    Thanks for being our voice!

    Best regards,

    Anthony

    Hi Rob,

I was one of the winners of your promo code give away for the app, "Desk Calc" a few episodes back. Thank you very very much!  I want to say how useful I am finding the app and highly recommend it. I believe the price is only $1.19.

The main feature of this calculator app that is not included on the stock Calc app is the virtual digital tape showing what numbers and totals you punched in. The obvious reasons for wanting this feature is to verify that you keyed in the numbers accurately, however some additional and not so obvious benefits I've found are to look back at the tape later to review these calculations. For example, step one calculate your income for the year. Step 2 calculate your tax deductible expenses. Step 3 subtract expense from income to get net income. When done you can email the tape to yourself or whom ever to review later and also add notations to these numbers if desired.

Also during a recent renovation I used the Desk Calc app when measuring the lengths of several baseboards needed for all rooms. I then used the total of these numbers at the builder supply store helping me to estimate quantity of baseboards needed and then when cutting baseboards to size, I had my cutting list right in my pocket.

The last feature I'll mention is the four button memory feature that is not included on stock Calc app when in portrait orientation.  I find the four button memory feature very useful on occasions as well.

This Desk Calc app is now my go-to calculator app.

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/

    1198527709/icons-by-corners4-

    protection-meets-design?ref=discovery

I was looking around Kickstarter for something unique or different for iOS devices and I came across a project called - icons by corners4 - with icons - actually spelled I C O N S.  This is for the iPhone 6 and 6plus - and it is a way to protect your iPhone - but not hide its beauty.

What this is simply is 4 items or nubs or corner protectors that go - obviously one in each corner - they have a decent height above and below the device  such that if you drop your iPhone they will keep the screen from ever hitting the ground and thus protects the screen,

This is a neat way to protect the screen but at the same time not get in the way of the beauty of the iPhone.  And the corner protectors are cool looking - one is called Forsaken - and it is basically a skull - think the Punisher.  Another is called Dragon and think - a castle tower in its design.  And there are a few other.

They claim they have a special adhesive from 3M to create a strong bond with the surface of your phone without damaging it.  They do state on their site it is not going to damage the surface of the phone and you can remove them if needed - but in regular use they will not come off on their own.

It looks like they already have this product for the iPhone 4/4s and 5/5s.  If anyone has purchased these - for their 4/4S or 5/5s - please call in with your review.

Pricing on this starts at $39 for the Original design.  then $45 for the Dragon and Prism design.  The Forsaken aka Skull design is $55.

I do like this concept and the designs.  Right now they are a little light on the funding - with just $3k towards their goal of $20k.  But they do have 38 days to get that extra 17k - this one goes until Jun 14th at 12:28 PM CT.

If you are looking for good protection and also something that does not get in the way of plugging into the lightening port this is a good option.  I would still suggest a glass screen protector as well.  Which is a question I put to them on kickstarter - is will they work with glass screen protectors.

    Here was their response:

    Hi Rob,

Thank you for your interest and support for ICONS by Corners4. The ICONS will be manufactured to pretty exacting tolerances. They need to snuggly fit the iPhone and accommodate the custom designed 3M adhesive that keeps them in place....This is a system we are using successfully for our original Corners4. Many of our customers use thin 2mm screen protectors...It makes the installation a little tighter, but it works just fine. Some glass protectors 3+mm can present a challenge. This has been a very minor issue for us...Again thank you for your help and if there are any other questions I can answer fire away.

    Regards,

    Steve W

Thanks Steve for the reply - folks search for ICON at kickstarter dot com on in the show notes for ep 346.

    Hi Rob,

I wish this email finds you well. My name is Markus and I am your show's long time listener. I work as an iOS developer and would like to thank you for your wonderful podcasts, which gave me inspirations and information that helped creating better users experience when developing iOS apps.

The app, 'HiCast', that I have been personally working on, contains all hot features for a podcast players, and on top of that, the menu tab was created to address one hand operation to work best with big screen like the iPhone 6 plus.  It provides an easy way for people to share their favourite bookmarks on different podcasts, so that your shows can be shared by listeners much easier than ever. Most importantly, there will be no cost to download or to use this app!

Here is the App Store link for HiCast:

    Hi Rob,

I'm a new listener to your show and have been really enjoying it for a couple of months now.  Two questions on Cellular Settings in iOS 8.2 (going to wait a bit on 8.3) which I use on my T-Mobile 5S:

    1. I have some apps that function quite well completely offline, like Downcast for example, since I download, rather than stream my podcasts, including yours.  iOS, however, is hellbent on reminding me the split second I open the app when I'm not at home on my Wifi network, that "Cellular Data is Turned Off for 'Downcast'" or whatever other app I'm opening.  Since I'm not a good jailbreaker candidate, is there any other way to turn off these annoying pop-ups?  "Yes, thank you iOS, but I have a very good reason for having Cellular Data Turned Off:  I don't need or want it for this app.  My own Wifi is fine and dandy, thank you."
    2. Closely related to this, is the same pop-up every time I open the "Settings" menu when I'm not on Wifi.  Is there any benefit to having Cellular Data turned on for the entire "Settings" menu?

Yes, I'm a cheapskate when it comes to data.  "I plead guilty, as charged, your honor."

Thanks in advance for your help and for all the useful tips you and my fellow listeners put out there for us each week.

    Regards,

    -Brian-

Hi Rob and Fellow Tii Listeners:

I'd like to get feedback on using a magnet type mount in a rough riding vehicle like a big truck or rough riding pickup etc.

    Thanks for your feedback

    Regards

    Mike R

Well folks please call or email us if you have done any testing of a good magnetic type mount that survives off roading.  Especially if it holds your iPhone in place even after you run into a tree because you were trying to look at the screen while driving off road.  Just Sayin

    Hi Rob,

I've used mctube for sometime to download videos from YouTube to save and watch offline, it doesn't work anymore with the YouTube rules of third party apps. Do you have a suggestion for a work around, would prefer not to jailbreak will I will if I have to.

    Regards,

    Nick.

    Hi Rob,

I have an opportunity to change my AT&T unlimited data plan to a 3GB

shared data plan with one month rollover data while I still have 8

months remaining on my two year (single line) contract.  The savings

will be $20 per month for a total of $160 just for the current

contract.  I plan to purchase my future phones outright so I don't

need the "supplemented" phone purchase assistance.  I am only using 1

to 2 GB right now but I'm not sure what my future data use may be.

I'm looking for some thoughts or Pros and Cons from you and your

listeners as to how dumb it would be to give up the unlimited data

that will never be available again.

Great program and thank you for all that you do.

    Regards,

    Keith in St. Louis/New Orleans

I wanted to give you a heads up on an app called Invaders Mini - which is a quote game unquote for the apple watch - and yeah - using the word game is being generous.  It is a space invaders themed app for your Apple watch.  And well it is clear from this quote game unquote - that Apple Watch games have a ways to go yet.   But hey if you want a quote game unquote for your Apple watch this one is appropriately priced at Free.
