    https://mixpanel.com/trends/#report/ios_9/from_date:

    -9,report_unit:day,to_date:0

Apple reported a 52% adoption rate of iOS 9 with in 3 days - this based on visits to the iTunes Store.

But is it possible there was a lot more visits by iOS 9 devices looking for updates to apps - then really a 52% adoption rate.

I mean one of the first things you do when you upgrade to iOS 9 is update apps - right.

Other services were showing around a 20 to 25% adoption rate in the first 3 days.

If we look at Mix Panel today - September 30th - they are showing an adoption rate of 55.05% for iOS 9.x  vs 37.84% for iOS 8.x vs 7.11% for older than iOS 8.   They actually show September 24th as the day iOS 9 beat out iOS 8 for adoption.  And September 26th as the day it went over 50%.

    All incredible numbers.

So now the question is - can you update to iOS 9.  or should you.  And well no - not iOS 9.  But rather you should update to iOS 9.0.2 - that just came out today on the 30th.

iOS 9.0.2 - fixes some additional bugs - the biggest one in my book is the issue with the Podcasts App.  For the first time I am able to use the Podcasts App on iOS 9.  Yeah.

I do want to say some are having crashing issues still - but it is different crashing issues with the podcasts app - before it would say updating library at a white screen and crash.  Now for some it goes to your list of podcasts - it shows them - it starts to download podcasts and then crashes.  One suggestion - make sure you download all your podcast episodes before updating.

Also if you were one that has been crashed for a while - before updating - go and turn off downloading.  Then update - then open the podcasts app - then turn downloading back on.

    06:52

    http://9to5mac.com/2015/09/30/ios-9-0-2/

Ok - but iOS 9.0.2 was NOT just about the Podcasts App fix - there were other items as well.

Here is what apple said iOS 9.0.2 fixed.

quote fixes an issue with the setting to turn on or off app cellular data usage.

resolves an issue that prevented iMessage activation for some users.

resolves an issue where an iCloud backup could be interrupted after starting a manual backup

Fixes an issue where the screen could incorrectly rotate when receiving notifications

and Improved the stability of Podcasts

So nice to see Apple with two double dot updates so quickly. Yes would have been better to not have needed them - but it is what is.

Apple also stopped signing iOS 8.4.1 - so no going back folks if you are at iOS 9.0.x

Also Apple released - iOS 9.1 Beta 3 - and apparently it fixes the issue with the Podcasts app as well.

    http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2015/09/28Apple-Announces-

    Record-iPhone-6s-iPhone-6s-Plus-Sales.html

Well Apple released their iPhone first weekend sales numbers and as expected it was more than last year.  I had speculated it would be about 12.5 Million units.  It actually came in at 13 Million units.  From Apple

    Quote

CUPERTINO, California — September 28, 2015 — Apple® today announced it has sold more than 13 million new iPhone® 6s and iPhone 6s Plus models, a new record, just three days after launch.

    unquote

Congrats to Apple on those numbers - but again that is not really about demand - as we know demand is greater - but rather about logistics - and well Congrats to Tim Cook on the Logistics of getting 13 Million iPhones to users in the first 3 days.

Some other good tidbits from that press release

    quote

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will be available in more than 40 additional countries beginning October 9 including Italy, Mexico, Russia, Spain and Taiwan. The new iPhones will be available in over 130 countries by the end of the year.

    unquote

Then there was a whole bunch of Yada Yada - Yada Yada in the PR.

    09:30

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/markets/2015/

    09/28/iphone-save-cannot-apple/72972532/

So how did Wallstreet re-act to the news of the new record for iPhone Sales - ummm not so good.

Seems some wanted to see higher numbers - because this time around - China is part of the opening weekend.  They were not there at launch weekend last year.

But strangely enough - none of the anal-ists were predicting over 13 Million units sold.  Most were in the 11 to 12 Million range.

But suddenly  when Apple actually exceeds the numbers those anal-ists had predicted.  The Anal-ists then go - but yeah - this time you had China in the numbers.  As if they did not know that ahead of time.

Yes - this year the iPhone launched in 12 global regions including China vs last years 10 regions where China was not included.  But so what - this still was not about demand - it was about logistics.

So over or under - the number should not matter - but with it being over - how can the anal-ists be negative on that?  Wow - they really confuse me sometimes.

Anyway - the real measure will be in January when Apple says when Q4 2015 sales were for iPhones.

    iphone-feature-that-is-sending-bills-soaring/#_

Thanks to Doug in Cincy and other for his next one.

There is one new feature in iOS 9 - that is turned on by default - that most people will want to turn off.  And by most - I do mean you.  It is Wi-Fi Assist.  And the reports from listeners are not good about going through a lot more cellular data then ever before.  Yours truly included.

What this feature is supposed to do - is when you have a weak Wi-Fi signal - it is supposed to switch to Cellular to give you a better connection.  Sounds reasonable.  Except it seems Siri or whomever is make the call on what is a weak Wifi signal is really not all that happy with Wi-Fi and it is switching over a lot to Cellular.  And this is driving up cellular data usage and in some cases causing people to pay more for their data plans.

To Turn this option off - go to Settings App - then select Cellular - and then scroll down - and keep scrolling down - until you get to the bottom of the page - and there the toggle switch is hidden.  Go and turn it off.

Also as you go back up the page - take a good look at those items that have cellular data turned on - many times - these apps ONLY need cellular data for ads - so turn off cellular data for those apps you know you will not need it as well.

Reality is you don’t need nor want to use cellular data for ads in games or other apps that don’t need a network connection.

Here is an email on this.

    Hi Rob,

Wifi assist defaults to cellular data when experiencing  a weak wifi signal. Have had to up my data since my daughter got a

Six. She used 12 gb. Usually she uses 3-4

    Sincerely,

    Cindy E

    Hi Rob,

I’ve just updated my IPhone 6 and IPad Air 2 to IOS 9.0.1. The problems that I was experiencing the the Accessibility>Zoom feature  not responding properly in 9.0  appears to have been improved although it is still intermittently unresponsive. Perhaps the next update will fix it properly but at least it’s usable.

I agree that IOS 9 includes many changes but I’ve yet to see anything that is really new. There are some very minor changes but I feel that Apple has tried to claim lots of credit for tweaks instead of giving us real innovation.

I’m sitting at home today awaiting delivery of two iPhone 6s’ for my wife and I. I wasn’t going to upgrade this time but I’m exactly half way through my purchase plan with £300 to pay on my iPhone 6. My provider has offered me £271 for my existing phone so I’m getting the new phone 12 months early for £29. I’m also getting a new Lightning cable so it’s a no brainer.

I took some of your advice before upgrading, reset network settings, and had no problems. I did end up resetting my watch and that took a little longer than I expected but all devices are now working fine.

Overall, apart from the upgrade to Watch OS 2, I don’t think this was a major upgrade. I always look forward to a new version of IOS because I like new toys but so far, I’ve been disappointed. Perhaps I’ll get more from IOS 9 with my new 6s.

Love the show. More often would be better though.

    H Rob,

I just received my iphone 6S and I am Happy to report it actually does fit into my iPhone 6's clear, protective case. Not sure it would fit into every case but just sayin for your listeners, test the 6s in your 6 case before you buy a new one, it just might fit. Same with the 6+ and 6s+ I suppose.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from Myron Uecker who posted the following question

    Quote

Proof that the "Hey Siri" in iOS 9 works as advertised. I enrolled my iPhone 6S earlier today and it does work for me. My wife was sitting right beside me and enrolled her phone and my phone didn't respond at all.

    Unquote

To which one comment was - how do you enroll.

Well in iOS 9 - when you activate allow “hey siri” which is in the settings app —> general —> Siri

You get taken to a screen that says - “Setup “Hey Siri” - this helps siri recognize your voice when you say “hey siri”

Then the option to set up Now.

Once you select that you will say Hey Siri a few times and then with some commands and after a 6 or so prompts to siri it says it is ready.

Very easy to set up - so folks - please set that up so I can start saying  Hey Siri - without spelling out the H E Y.  I think maybe one more episode of spelling it out is going to do it for me.

Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts and comments in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Also from the Google Plus community was this post from Saul Lowery who wrote:

I just discovered another cool feature of the iPhone 6S and 3D Touch. So if you are browsing along on a website and you see a link, 3D touch on the link and it will pop up a pre view of the website, it looks really cool. If you want to go to that website, press harder. This is a awesome feature in my book. As I'm watching this feature in action, the website is actually being loaded up so you can quickly check it out and see if you want to actually pop in on it.

    https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPhone+6s+Teardown/48170

One of my favorite posts to come out after a new iOS device launch is the post from iFixit where they tear down the device and we get to see what really makes it tick and pick up a few nuggets of insight not shared during the keynote.

Lets start off with the iPhone 6S teardown.

First up is the question about the adhesive strips around the display.  Are these for holding the display in place or for giving it better water proofness - if that is a word.

The large taptic engine in the 6S - is a big reason for the reduced size in the battery.

As mentioned before both the 6S and 6S+ are heavier then the 6 and 6+.  Part of that has to do with the new screen assembly. It is 15 Grams heavier in the 6S then it was with the 6.  60 grams vs 45 grams.

The Battery on the 6S is a 1715 mAh battery down from the 1810 mAh battery of the 6.  That said - Battery life is listed as the same.  So Apple improved battery efficiency - while reducing battery size to get a wash - when it came to the battery life.  I am sure we will be hearing from those of you that upgraded to a 6S from a 6 - on your thoughts on Battery life shortly.

They pulled out the 12 MP camera - but did not go over the manufacturer at least not for the 6S - we shall see for the 6S+ later on.

Finally we get to the circuit board and as already been shown via tests - it does indeed have 2GB of RAM.  So now Zero question marks on that.

One of the bigger surprises in the teardown - is the discovery of tiny seals that surround each of the cable connectors.  These match a patent Apple filed back in March per waterproofing board to board connectors.

It would seem with the addition of these seals - plus the aforementioned adhesive strips that act as a gasket - Apple has made the new iPhone 6S more waterproof - even if they did not make any such claim.

there are videos out there of the iPhone 6S being submerged in a bowl of water for an hour with no issues.

It seems those cable connectors are the most vulnerable to liquid damage - and by adding in the seals around them - Apple greatly improved the waterproof or resistance of this generation of iPhones.  Even again if they are making no such claims. It might be this is a lot of testing going on - so that next year for the iPhone 7 - they can take it to the next level and claim a truly waterproof iPhone.  Need to come back to these comments in a year and see if that was indeed the case.

By the way iFixit Makes sure to say - quote this device doesn't come with a water resistance rating, and we do not recommend getting your 6s wet. Water and smartphones are not the best of friends. unquote

So yeah - what they said.

For the iPhone 6S - iFixit gives it a repair score of 7 out of 10 - which is actually pretty good for an iPhone.

    32:12

    https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/

    iPhone+6s+Plus+Teardown/48171

Now on to the iPhone 6S+ teardown.

As with the 6S - the 6S+ also has an adhesive strip around the perimeter of the display.  Again - this may be more for waterproofing then for adhering the display.

The display on the 6S+ is 20 grams more then the 6+ - 80 grams vs 60 grams.

So yes 3D touch brings with it some added weight.

Interestingly the Taptic engine in the 6S+ is actually smaller - quite a bit smaller than they on the 6S.  15 x 8 x 4.9 MM for the 6S+ vs 35 x 6 x 3.2 mm for the 6S.  That is 588 cubic mm for the 6S+ vs 672 cubic mm for the 6S.  Maybe Apple needed the extra space for the battery.  And that battery is just 2750 mAh for the 6S+ vs 2,915 mAh for the 6+ a drop of 165 mAh.

Again - Apple is claiming identical battery life between the two devices.

The Rear camera for the 6S+ is noticeably bigger than that for the 6S - this do to the extra optical image stabilization feature.

Again no notice of who made the camera module - and no indications if it is at all related to their LynX purchase - which at this time it does not at all look to be the case.

Next it is time for the chips and again it is confirmed there is 2GB of RAM for the 6S+ - not that that is a surprise to anyone.

Really no big surprises that were not shown for the 6S.

Repairability for the 6S+ is also a 7 out of 10.

Thank to Mike for the heads up on this next one.

There is a nice article over on PetaPixel dot com titled - How the iPhone 6S Camera compares to all previous iPhones.  And it does a nice quick job showing the improvement in our pics of the past 8 years.

When you look at the low light pictures - it clearly shows the 6S is much better then the past iPhones.

From the article quote The improved sensor, software updates and new A9 processor on the iPhone 6s has made this camera the best yet, There is an apparent increase in the speed of auto focus and improvements to colour accuracy, details and sharpness, especially in low light. unquote

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPGzLd8Xwx4

As I said on a couple of previous episodes - as soon as the iPhone 6S and 6S+ were released people would be tripping over themselves to get videos up on Youtube showing how they bent the new iPhones - and Yup - that was the case - but really that was about as much as a stretch as predicting the A9 processor would be in the next Gen iPhone.

What was not predicted was just how darn hard it is to actually bend the 6S and 6S+.  Apple really did a great job on adding rigidity to this generation of the iPhones.  As one tweet I saw went quote looks like Apple injected viagra into the series 7,000 aluminum unquote.

One of the video on Youtube shows a video person struggling mightily to try and bend it with his bare hands.   He is shaking he is trying so hard - but to no avail.

    36:43

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pjiuf5ftIPY

And we had this email sent in.

    Hey Rob,

I had not seen this version of the "bend test" before. Figured you would want to see it even if it can't be shared on the podcast.

    Regards,

    Peter H

Thanks Peter - and while I can’t show it - I can describe it.  The person in this Youtube video did a unique bend test - he placed the iPhone 6S+ across two very solid surfaces so just a little of the ends are on them.  Then in the middle he places a solid block about 1 inch wide - but going across the width of the iPhone and on top of it he starts adding 25 lb weights.  So you are talking a very concentrated force in the middle of the iPhone.

It takes about 150 lbs of weight for some case separation and 180 lbs of weights to finally destroy it.

Last year 90 lbs of force bent it and 110 lbs broke it.

So in this unscientific test - at lest the 6S+ was much more rigid then the 6+

Hey maybe the S stand for Stiff this time.

In all seriousness - the 6+ took a lot to bend - but the 6S+ well to bend it you really really have to go out of your way to cause it an issue on the bending side.

    38:26

I mentioned a few episodes ago about PIDS - Post iPhone delivery syndrome and right about now - some of you are suffering from PIDS.  And by Suffering I mean your significant other is letting you know that they need some attention and are feeling a little jealous of your new shinny Apple device.

This year guys we have a sponsor that can help defeat PIDS - and that is Boll and Branch.

How does Boll and Branch help you defeat PIDS - by allowing you to buy luxury sheets at an affordable price in a package your significant other will love and feel appreciated when you gift it to them. Like I said a year ago - do something to let them know you still care - and this is that something.

The sheets from Boll and Branch are made from 100% organic cotton - not because organic is a buzzword but because organic cotton is incredibly soft.  And the sheets get softer each time you wash them.  We have had ours for almost two months now and they are incredible and keep getting even softer. You’ll get the nicest sheets you’ve ever owned for about half the price of what stores and boutiques would be charging for sheets of far lower quality.  I really could not believe how excited my wife was to get these new sheets.  And the box they came in and the individual pouches for the sheets and pillow cases - well the presentation was incredible.

Until Boll & Branch, no one challenged the department stores - so they’ve been overcharging you for crummy sheets forever and there just was no where else to shop.  But Now you can buy right from boll and branch dot com  - with boll spelled B O L L.  Folks You can kiss those retail markups goodbye.

These sheets are only sold online at boll and branch dot com - you can’t buy them in any stores.  That is how they keep the pricing low and free of markups.

How nice are these sheets - well three living US Presidents sleep on Boll & Branch sheets.  And they can choose any bedding in the world and they chose Boll & Branch.

But here is the best part - don’t take my word for it - try them out yourself for 30 days risk free.  Boll and Branch is so sure your going to fall in love with their sheets that they give you 30 nights to try them out.  If you don’t love them for ANY reason - they will take them back and refund you without any hassle at all.

And Folks there is a new Apple TV coming in October - which means more time spent in your bed - so make sure you have the best sheets to go with the best Set-top box.

If you order right now - they will give you $50 off a set of sheets plus give you free shipping.  Just go to Boll and branch dot com and use promo code Tii - that right $50 off by going right now to B O L L   A N D   B R A N C H  dot com and using the promo code T I I

Again - if you are looking to defeat PIDS this year - Boll and Branch has you covered.

    Hi Rob,

Horrible experience on Friday when I tried the Apple upgrade plan. Plenty of balance on my credit card and excellent credit. I was declined by Citizen One after 7 tries I finally gave up and paid full price for the phone. I purchased  the gold 6s with 128gb. I will probably take the phone back and do At&t next for 12 months, since evidently my credit is not good enough for Apple's upgrade program. I spent two and a half hours in the store trying to get the upgrade program to work. It was a huge waste of time and I really hope they get this program fixed before the lose loyal customers. I am a long term listener an love your show Rob. Stood in line for the first phone and immediately found your podcast. You and the other listeners have helped me immensely.

    Thanks,

    Larry from Granbury, TX

    Hi Rob,

I wanted to share some information I discovered the other day about iOS 9. I know Apple noted that Siri was going to be more predictive and a more active assistant; however I wasn't aware of howmuch more advanced Apple made her.

The other day, I was in the car, and Siri was adding some items to my Reminders. At one point, I wasn't sure if she added, let's say, exactly what I I had said. So I asked her to read my reminders back to me. In the past, I would receive the same response: "Sorry, Brenton, I can not complete that request at this time!", but this time, she actually read back every one of my reminders. I was very surprised by this. When she finally stated the last item, it was in fact added wrong (not quite what I had told her); so again, I asked her to Delete the last item in my list. Again, I was expecting an error message about not being able to do that, when she did it!!

I am really excited to see what other new things Siri can do to be more helpful. These are little things that are really shaping the iOS experience and setting it apart from the competition. I just wanted to share with you and your listeners. Keep up the great work.

    Brenton N

For a kickstarter project - this week we have the following email to read.

    Hi Rob,

Richard from Flyshark team. Our Flyshark folding keyboard was a success on Kickstarter. With the feedback and more experience, we created Flyshark II:

    - Bluetooth 4.2 for faster, more secure connection

    - Longer battery life from Better Energy efficiency and a bigger battery

    - Special shortcut for iOS for selfie, search and screen capture

    - Universal Bluetooth keyboard compatibility

    - Lighter and Sturdier with new structural engineering improvement

Now we have launched on Kickstarter - Search for flyshark 2.

    Regards,

    Richard Wu

    FlyShark Team

Richard thanks for the email and saving me the time to work up the description.

This project has a goal of 30,000 dollars - and has raised over half of that so far and they have until Oct 24th at 9:20 AM CT to be funded.

What Richard did not mention is when folded close this keyboard is about the same size as the iPhone 6+ - so not very big - and definitely very portable.

Pricing on this is $49 with delivery slated for November.

This really is a good looking and compact key board - and that it supports bluetooth 4.2 - is nice for the new iPhone owners.

Again search for flyshark 2 in kickstarter dot com or in the show notes for ep 366.

Joe thanks - but in this calendar year - I have purchased a Mac Book Pro, a Mac Book, an Apple Watch Sport - and will be getting at least one Apple TV - and likely an iPad Pro.  Very likely an iPad Pro - if folks want to donate toward that iPad Pro - that will be appreciated especially considering the price to get one with the keyboard, apple pencil and top end for storage - Folks there is a donate button on the lower right side of Today in iOS dot com.  I think I need to pass this year on a new iPhone.  But Joe - Thanks for the feedback and thoughts.

    Hi Rob,

I just Listened to Ep 363. A good Round-Up of the event. Just noticed, with the TII app as you were talking about the three year old comic. I clicked on the link while listening. And was surprised the link opens in the App not going off to Safari or other default browser set. Kudos for that.

The Tii App the best way to consume everything Today in iOS.

Per the pre-order experience for the 6S and 6S+ here is some of the feedback from listeners.

    Hi Rob,

Att.com opened early.  Order placed for Silver iPhone6S at 2:55est.   Five minutes early,

3:07 est  Apple app on iOS device finally opens, Apple.com still on hold shows closed

3:19am est.  Apple.com finally opens online for me, but I already ordered on Att.com.

    Hi Rob,

The Apple Store website and Apple Store app all still seem down for me , but Verizon let me place my order early around 2:54 EST, and I got the confirmation email almost immediately.

    Hey Rob,

so I was able to watch the long-winded September 9th event by dividing it up into two evenings after work and here are my take aways: As an iPhone 6 owner on T-Mobile JUMP, I was planning on upgrading my device every year but after seeing what apple has to offer this year, I'm just really not excited to upgrade. The numbers are great on processor and graphics speeds, forced...ahem...3D touch looks cool and efficient, but, like you, I was really hoping to get a camera that's flush with the body. You can keep your high megapixels and give me a camera that doesn't protrude! But hey, that's just me. I understand that the general public may want the larger megapixel camera and Apple feels the need to keep up with the Jonses. So I may be waiting another year and just paying off my monthly EIP until I own this 6 outright then selling it and upgrading to the 7. I’m not in love with this slippery rounded body style anyway, hopefully that changes next time around. On to the really exciting news... Apple TV! YES, finally! This one could be a game changer. I really hope to be able to get rid of Comcast eventually and this may just be the ticket. If Apple is able to lock down Amazon Prime and an NFL package, I’m sold. Who am I kidding? I’m probably going to buy a new Apple TV regardless :) The new iPad Pro is impressive, it could replace the need for a laptop but it’s really not much cheaper than buying a new Macbook. And the Apple Watch just isn’t for me…right now at least :) Well, that’s my four cents, keep up the good work on the show. PS why do you sound so different when you’re on the road using different mics??

    Regards,

    - Double A

    Hi Rob,

12:17AM, ordered two 6S+ 128GB (Rose Gold for the wifey, Gold for myself) for pickup at the Stanford Apple Store at 8AM on September 25th! I will be standing in line again! Good night world.

    Hi Rob,

Finally at 8:52 am GMT it goes through on website. Was on phone trying to call O2 at the same time and they kept cutting me out after waiting in line for about 10mins. Now can't wait for the next 2wks to roll by. Gosh that was painful.

    Hi Rob.

At 1:30 AM PDT I reserved a new Gold 64GB 6S for purchase a my local Apple retail store on September 25th. There were plenty of time slots available starting at 9:30 AM. I chose between 12:00 to 12:30 PM. I am planning to purchase the unlocked AT&T compatible phone with AppleCare Plus and pay the full amount at purchase.

And what it does is - it shows you a dozen pictures of people waiting in line - and you have to decide are they waiting in Line for a new iPhone or to see the Pope.

I have to admit - I did really bad at this - 4 out of 12 right.  Just guessing with out looking I would have done better.

    Thanks Robin for that.

I had some interesting feedback about my coverage of the new iPhones to date.  More than One person said I was being my typical Fan boy self and there is nothing compelling about the updates.  Another person said I was essentially pissing on my listeners by being so snarky and negative on the upgrade.  Win Win - And by Win Win - I mean if I upset both sides of the isle so to speak - it must mean I am right where I need to be.

Next episode - I hope to do my comparison on how the update for the 6S and 6S+ compare to past updates.  and go over those in more details.  Plus go over some of your additional feedback.  I will say - if you have a 5S or earlier - this is a no brainer upgrade - well actually not no brainer - as you need to choose between the two sizes.  If you have a 6 or 6+ then it is not so easy of a choice.  Again I will go over that more hopefully next episode.  Per my comments about 16GB - I stand firm on my belief there - 16GB is too small for anyone other than the I don’t install apps and don’t take photos and don’t even listen to podcasts crowd.  But for anyone using the iPhone as more than phone - for you - I have to really really point out - 64 GB is the bare min size I would recommend from the available sizes. I do think Apple should have offered 32 GB this round - but I understand financially why they did not.  It means more users will be choosing 64 GB - and that means added margin for Apple. It is sad to think this is likely more about financials then it is about the end user.  And that just does not seem very Apple-ish.   Let me know your thoughts on the updgrade - if you were someone agonizing or still agonizing on upgrading.  What do you have now - and what is making the decision tough for you?

And that folks is going to do it for us today -

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote “Why will Microsoft dominate the tablet market? The answer is as simple as it is obvious. Windows will continue to dominate, for the same reasons it has always dominated the PC and laptop market and continues to do so, by a wide margin. Let me make another obvious prediction. The iPad can never replace people’s laptops and PCs, or even make much of an impact in these markets, because it simply does not even begin to have the same capabilities — not even close. unquote

    http://money.cnn.com/2015/09/21/technology/apple-

    xcode-hack/index.html

Lets start this weeks episode talking about probably the biggest news the past week with regards to iOS - at least in the main stream press Nope - Not iOS 9 and its release,  or the Coming launch of the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus Nope it was Apples’ Malware issue.

What is not always clear in the titles of these articles - or even in the body of some of them - is that the issue - is mostly with apps being downloaded in the Chinese app store.  Yes - they are available elsewhere - but these are apps specifically designed for the Chinese market by Chinese developers.

So how did Apps with Malware get inside the Apple Walled garden - well they were built with a compromised version of Xcode.  The Malware is being called XcodeGhost and was used to build a bunch of apps for the Chinese Market.

This even includes a Chinese version of Angry Birds 2 built by a team from Rovio in China.

It seems that in China the official download of Xcode can be slow - really slow -   So a few sites in China hosted what they claimed was Xcode - the official version - but really it was a modified version that when you built apps with it - it added in Malware.

Apple has been pulling down apps.  And the number of apps affected range from a low of 85 to a high of almost 5,000 depending on the article you read.

Some of the affected apps are very popular in China including the WeChat App, Angry Birds 2 - by the aforementioned Chinese team for Rovio, There was Didi Chuxing - a leading Taxi requesting app, Railway 12306 a popular Train-ticket purchasing App and China Unicom’s Mobile Office - to name just a few of the popular ones.

So what did Apple have to say about all of this?

Well on the 25th of September they put up this post for developers and also sent out as an email

    Quote

We recently removed apps from the App Store that were built with a counterfeit version of Xcode which had the potential to cause harm to customers. You should always download Xcode directly from the Mac App Store, or from the Apple Developer website, and leave Gatekeeper enabled on all your systems to protect against tampered software.

When you download Xcode from the Mac App Store, OS X automatically checks the code signature for Xcode and validates that it is code signed by Apple. When you download Xcode from the Apple Developer website, the code signature is also automatically checked and validated by default as long as you have not disabled Gatekeeper.

Whether you downloaded Xcode from Apple or received Xcode from another source, such as a USB or Thunderbolt disk, or over a local network, you can easily verify the integrity of your copy of Xcode.

    Yada Yada Yada Yada

    unquote

So what should you do - if you are in China - first and foremost - make sure you update all your apps - many of the affected apps already have replacements built with a clean version of Xcode available - like Angry Birds 2.  Beyond that look for the link in the show notes for the article titled - These are the 85 iOS apps affected by the XcodeGhost malware  - And see if you have any of those installed.

MixPanel was looking at iOS 9 adoption rates - and what they found was that in just 3 days - Apple did with iOS 9 what it took over 9 months for Android to do - and that was hit 20% adoption rate for their latest and greatest software.

And then on Monday the 21st - just 5 days after launch Apple reported the following:

Quote the fastest iOS adoption ever, with more than 50 percent of devices already using iOS 9.

Clearly not people that listen to this podcast.  Or Podcasts a lot for that matter.  Because there is one confirmed and major bug - and that is for Heavy Podcast app users.  The Podcasts App is still crashing and burning for many. Or more precisely when you go to open the Podcasts App - it takes you to a white screen with the words updating library - and a spinning wheel - then about 15 seconds give or take 5 later the app crashed back to the home screen.

I have been talking to Apple about this - sharing my crash log files and anything else they want.  At this point it does appear to be a very small % of users this is affecting - but there is an Apple iTunes forum board post on this with over 11 pages of posts - 15 posts per page.

If you like me updated to iOS 9 and you like me were a power consumer of podcasts - and you like me are now seeing the white screen and a crash - sadly there is no simple solution.  For Some - with quotes around some - for some users they have wiped their iphone clean to factory fresh settings and were able to then get the podcasts app to open - well at least until they tried to set back up with their back up - and then it crashes again.  Others could not even get it to work with a full restore.  Another thing we know is it is not limited to one set of hardware - the issue is affecting all makes and models of iOS devices that update to iOS 9 AND had a healthy Podcast library.

Again the % is small - but for this audience it will be much higher.  If you have subscribed to more than 5 or 10 podcasts ever - DO NOT update to iOS 9 at this time.  If you do - well there is always the Tii App for direct consumption.

Actually the benificiary of this issue seems to be Overcast - which was in the top 30 of free News apps this week.  And for the Paid news apps - Pocketcasts, Downcast and Podcruncher are all in the top 10.

At libsyn we have been watching to see if this issue affected overall downloads - and it has not.  There were actually more downloads in the 7 days after the release of iOS then there were in the 7 days prior to the release.  A modest 1.3% increase. So whatever is happening it has not affected podcast downloads yet.

At this point it looks like it will take a double dot update to fix the issue - and yes - people running iOS 9.1 beta 1 and beta 2 are still having the issue.

And speaking of double dot updates - Apple released on the 23rd their first double dot update - iOS 9.0.1

And NO this does not fix the Podcasts App issues.  Whannnt Whannt Wahhh

What it does fix is the following:

Quote Fixes an issue where some users could not complete set up assistant after updating.

Fixes an issue where sometimes alarms and timers could fail to play

Fixes an issue in safari and photos where pausing a video could cause the paused frame to appear distorted

Fixes an issue where some users with a custom APN set up via a profile would lose cellular data.

If you are already updated to iOS 9 - then yes go and update to iOS 9.0.1  - it is available as a pretty small over the air update - just 35 MB in file size for my iPhone 6+ - file size will vary depending on your iOS device.

    https://thestack.com/security/2015/09/21/apples-

    ios-9-breaks-vpns/

Another bug reported with iOS 9 that could be a key reason not to update - is that for some users it is breaking VPN’s.  Like with the podcasts app this is something first noticed in the betas and not fixed yet.

Cisco had the following to say about this bug claiming quote “a couple of OS regressions between iOS 8.4.1 and iOS 9 […] Most notable is that when doing split tunneling, the Tunnel All DNS option no longer functions as expected. This was reported to Apple under Radar # 22558059. This is not resolved in the iOS 9 release.” unquote

As with the podcast app it is not affecting all users.  But for some users DNS resolution will not work for them depending on their network setup.  Some corporate servers will no longer be usable by the users even after they had a successful login - and when Users can’t use - that is an issue.  Especially for those required to VPN to their work server to access docs.

So if you are someone that relies on VPN’s at work to get your work done - you definitely do not want to upgrade to iOS 9 yet - as even cisco seems to be saying the only solution if you have a VPN issue in iOS 9 - is to downgrade to iOS 8.4.1 for now.

Another issue some iOS9 updaters are reporting is their iOS device getting hotting and sucking down the battery life like a thirsty 4 year old sucks down a juice box.

The solution for you if your iOS device is getting warming and the battery life sucks is simple - do the reset network settings step I always recommend - yup that seems to fix the vast majority of people reporting issues with iOS 9.

Of course they probably would not have had the issue if they had done that prior to updating to iOS 9.

I do find it funny how every year I recommend two things - 1 - wait - and 2 - if you are going to update - at least force quit open apps - back up and then reset network settings before updating.

And every year - someone will go out of their way to say they did not listen and had no issues - but then I also have many others that say - they wished they had listened.

    Dear Rob

WHY WHY WHY didn't I heed your advice and wait a couple weeks to update my iPhone 6 to iOS 9?? The phone is slow to respond when opening and closing apps at times. It has definitely lost some "zip" in areas here and there. I should've waited.

    Regards,

    Chris G

    Russell Springs KY

PS. A couple episodes back when you recorded from a hotel I thought it actually sounded great!

Thanks for the feedback Chris - and I would suggest at this time to first force quit all open apps then go to settings —> general —> Reset —> reset network settings

And then see how things are working.

By the way this is not voodoo that I am recommending - it is not about putting magnets in your socks to cure some alignment - this is based on advice we had sent in long ago - and is given out at Apple stores and apple support.  The theory is that sometimes you get a rogue process that goes running on - especially one that is pinging a network over and over - and that causes battery usage issues and slows down other items.  By force quitting apps and then resetting network settings - in theory at least all background activities should be closed out - especially any that were having issues.

One question that came in from a few people is the H E Y siri function that apple mentioned being on all the time - how come that does not work yet in iOS 9 - well because you need an iPhone 6S or 6S+ for it to work all the time - it has to do with the M9 processor being brought into the A9 Processor.

But it is a hardware limitation for making siri always in listening mode.

    apple-s-rapid-ios-9-adoption-shows-the-future-of-it.html

Nice Article from Jonny Evans at computer world talking about iOS 9’s rapid adoption rate.

Actually earlier I made it sound like it took 5 days for iOS 9 to get to 50% adoption rate.  But according to Apple - it was actually less then 3 days to get to 52% adoption rate.

Compared to 9 Months for Android to get to 20%.

Ouch - now you know why it is better to program for iOS.

Any way - if you were wondering if you should update to iOS 9 at this point.  As long as you 1. Are not a power user of Podcasts and use the Podcasts app -  and 2. Do not need VPN services for work - then for the rest of you - yes it looks safe to update.

I highly recommend when you do update - that you follow the procedures in the PDF in the Tii App - it goes over the steps to take.  Again - yes there are more then probably needed for most - but if you do the update right you will have less issues likely down the line.

    http://9to5mac.com/2015/09/21/apple-watch-

    watchos-2-top-features/

One reason people were also waiting upgrade to iOS 9 - was that they were waiting for the delayed Watch OS 2 to be released - and released it is now.

If you are updated to iOS 9 and have an apple watch - then yes I recommend you update to Watch OS 2.  Remember the original Watch OS - was really a beta - so Watch OS 2 - is the real software where we get to start seeing what is possible.

First you do need to update to iOS 9 on your iPhone.

    Then

quote to install the Watch OS update - make sure apple watch is

    1. in range of your iPhone connected to Wifi

    2. connected to its charger

    3. charged at least 50%

    unquote

And yes you do the update from inside the Apple Watch App on your iPhone.

It takes a little bit - 30 minutes or more - for the full download / install / restart process.

Some of what is news is new clock features including faces that include photos from your photo album, and time-lapse.

You can now set favorite contacts directly from your watch.

There is a new time travel mode which allows you to look into the future for the next few hours to see what events you have coming up.

And if it is plugged into the charger and you put it on its side - it enters night stand mode.  where it shows you the time in big letters - the charge status and the day and date.

    Hi,

Love the show, just thought I would let you know that after upgrading to WatchOS2 my calendars stopped showing up on my watch. Both my personal Gmail calendars and my corporate one.

After lots of testing - repairing etc nothing worked.

Turns out there is an issue with MDM profiles (our corporate policies) that are stopping the sync. I confirmed this by removing the MDM control and the calendars returned,

Now waiting to see what the MDM providers will say needs changing either their side or Apple's side.

    Regards

    Russ

Thanks Russ for the heads up on that - and I have heard from a few listeners that had that issue since updating to Watch OS 2.  So if you need calendar sync with your office - you may want to actually hold off updating to Watch OS 2.

And We are very happy to have Casper back as a sponsor - Casper is an online retailer and manufacturer of Premium mattresses for a fraction of the price you are used to paying.

Have you ever purchased a mattress by sitting on it for just a few minutes at the store only later to regret it.  That happened with us for my Oldest son's mattress.  We thought we purchased a good mattress - but oh my - we learned we did not - we would lay down with him to get him to go to sleep and as we tried to get up he would hear us and feel us moving and would wake up - very very frustrating. But we were stuck with the Mattress -  However With Casper you get a 100 day risk free trial period.  You don't like it you get your money back and they come and pick it back up and donate it to a charity.  That said - the mattress they sent is great and is definitely not going back. It is a mix of Latex foam and Memory foam. No noisy springs to wake up your kid or significant other when you get up to sneak some girl scout cookies from the pantry.

Casper did an incredible job on the engineering and feel of this mattress - the nights I record episodes - the boys go and sleep with mom - so when I am done I can sleep on his bed now and my back is not all out of whack in the morning.

But just as important as quality is Pricing and the pricing is really great.   Twin Mattresses are just $500, they also have Twin XL for $600, Full for $750, Queen for $850 and then King and Cal King - for  $950.  That is less than half the price my Parents paid for their King sized mattress and they can't stand their mattress.  Like I said you have 100 days to return it risk free. And if you go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code tii - you will save $50 off those prices.

This is an american made mattress with delivery right now for the US and Canada only and it is free delivery. When said mattress is delivered - it is from UPS - in a squarish box that you think no way is there a mattress in there - But you get a cool little tool to cut open the package and the mattress opens up and expands to form.

A lot of us will be getting the new Apple TV when it comes out and many of us will have it on our bedroom.  So you can throw out that spending 1/3 rd of our time in bed stat - it is going to be more.   And for the cost of an iPad but not as much as the iPad Pro - is it not worth getting the best nights sleep possible - and that is what you will get with Casper or what your kids will get.  Again to Save $50 off of the prices I mentioned go to casper dot com slash tii and use promo code t i i - all lower case on the promo code.  again casper dot com / tii - promo code tii to save $50 - thanks Casper for the great mattress for my son and for sponsoring this show.

    Hi Rob,

I installed iOS 9 on my iPhone 6 and my IPad Air  to last night. I am very disappointed with what I have been presented with. The differences are minimal and it has broken zoom feature on both devices. Neither respond to the three finger double tap and drag gesture for zooming in and out.

Apple has claimed that Siri is much better than before but from what I have seen there is absolutely no difference.  Oon the he Siri feature which I understood was going to be available without the device having power, it  does not work unless plugged in

The final nail in iOS nines coffin as far as I'm concerned was the delay of releasing I OS2 for my Watch.

As you can tell, I am not at all impressed.n i'm interested to hear what your other listeners think.

Love the show. Keep up the good work.

    VOICEMAIL - ALLAN_LA_iOS9_update_from_iOS7

    Hey Rob,

In response to the person who did a restore of their phone and lost all of their health data, I thought I'd share my experience with restores. You can save your health data when you do a restore! You will need to first unpaid the watch from your device. This forces a watch backup to be stored on your phone. You can check this by going to Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage (iOS 9) / Usage (iOS 8.x) > Manage Storage (under Storage, not iCloud) > Watch. You'll see a list of recent backups, which are performed when the watch is charging. Once you have your watch backup, you'll need to create an iCloud backup, or an ENCRYPTED backup on iTunes. This is done by selecting the "Encrypt Backup" option in iTunes. When you restore your device, just re-pair the watch, and it'll ask you to restore your Apple Watch.

As for my experience upgrading. I haven't had any issues so far. Was very bummed to see that Apple decided to wait on WatchOS 2, but glad they did and not had another update-gate like they did with iOS 8.0.1, which I was affected by. I did come from the Developer Beta and the GM, so my update was very small (<800mb) and only took about 4 or 5 minutes on my work connection.

Also got my iPhone 6S reserved in store, as I will be doing the upgrade program, but I did want to provide you with some insight: there is a second upgrade option Apple is doing in store called the iPhone Installment plan. It's extremely similar to the upgrade program, is you make payments over 24 months, but does not include AppleCare+ or the ability to upgrade yearly. Great for people who are on a carrier financing plan and like that option, but don't want to be tied to a specific carrier. You can still switch whenever you want and continue making payments like normal.

    Thanks,

    Brandon

    Hi Rob,

on item 0364 there was mention that doing an erase and full restore of iPhone looses all of the personal data such as health tracking. There IS a way to preserve that data and restore it. This includes passwords stored, health tracking, etc.

If you connect to a computer running iTunes and do an encrypted backup, then restore from that backup, all the deeper personal data is restored.

    Quote

Since updating to iOS 9 my 6 plus no longer reorientates when I turn it on its side. I have to open a app before it it changes. Is this a feature of iOS 9.

    Unquote

And I also saw requests about icons not rotating when turned.

This has to do with the Zoomed mode.  Seems for some updating to iOS 9 - zoomed mode was turned on.

To get the iPhone 6+ back into standard mode - go to Settings —> Display & Brightness —> View - and then select “standard” mode - that will then allow your icons to rotate on the iPhone 6+ as well as apps that are supposed to like Mail and notes and others.

quote But if you have an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus and you’re not ready to sign up for a yearly phone upgrade program, you might not feel the usual pull to get a new iPhone unless you really want a better front-facing camera. The speed improvements are incremental, the battery life is about the same, and it'll take a while for developers to really make use of 3D Touch. And by the time that happens, it will probably be time to buy an iPhone 7. unquote

BGR had an article titled - 6 ways the iPhone 6S is better than the iPhone 6

First is 3D Touch - and is probably the biggest difference.

Unless you are into selfies - then the S versions front camera is much better.  As is the rear camera. And that would be the biggest advantage.  Plus there is live photos.

There are now more colors - ok - Rose gold is nice - but ahhh.

The New Housing - if you were one of the handful of people that bent their 6+ or 6 - well the new version is supposed to be much much harder to bend.  Well maybe Consumer reports can do a video for us and let us know for sure.

Better Processor and better ram = better performance

Battery Life - it is expected that actual battery life performance will be better - but lets wait for a few tests before throwing this one out as a reason to upgrade.

A couple of the other items that are new and improved with the 6S and 6S+ not mentioned by BGR are

    1. Faster Touch ID

    2. More LTE Bands - because you can’t have too many LTE bands.

    3. Faster Wifi

    4. Being able to say H E Y siri any time you need to and have her respond - even when not plugged in.

    and

    5. With 3D touch on the iPhone 6S and 6S+ force touching on the keyboard brings up track pad mode.

    the iPhone 6S scored a 2292 in a single core test and a 4293 on a multi-code test.

The Retina Macbook - 1.1 ghz version had a single core score of 2295 and a multi core score of 4464

One of our sponsors today is Trunk Club.  visit trunk club dot com slash tii

Trunk club takes the hassle out of clothes shopping.

What trunk club does is a few things - first they ask you what your style is - what type fit you like and what your sizes are - and then they put you in contact with a personal stylist - Mine is Mary - Hi Mary.  Then you talk - and discuss what kind of cloths you are looking for - pants or shirts or jackets or whatever - and Then you get a trunk sent out to you full of clothes that fit perfectly and look great - that you get to try on - on your own - in your house - no rush - no pressure -   You get to walk around where you get a real feel for the cloths.  I had three different Sports coats slash blazers sent in my trunk - All of them looked great and were of course from the best brands - I then went and tried those on with my different shirts I already owned - I then was easily able to figure out the one that worked best with what I already had - AND also was different from what I already owned.  So now I have a great new sports coat that really compliments what I already owned - I did wear that sports coat At the LA Podfest.  Yes - I am officially a trunk club customer and it could not have been any easier.  And again I did get very positive and nice comments about my new sports coat while at the show.  I said thanks and quick stated that it came from Trunk club.  Both shows the comments and compliments were very nice.

One thing I really liked about the Trunk Club experience is that I was able to try on the different items and see how they did or did not differ from what I already owned.  Which was nice as it helps to keep you from buying duplicates. you simply put the items back in the trunk you don’t want.

keep what you like - send back the rest - and there is no pressure to keep anything. No one looking at you as you put items back in the trunk.

Folks this is NOT a subscription service - you only get the trunks you asked for.  When you are done - they have already included the return shipping label and tape for the trunk.  And they give you a number to call for quick pick up by UPS.  All of this can be done without stepping outside your house.

Right now their entire styling service is FREE - even the shipping is free - you only pay for the clothes you keep - to take advantage go right now to trunk club dot com slash t i i  -  again that is trunk club dot com slash tii for a trunk filled with great looking and fitting clothes that you are going to love wearing.

Thanks Trunkclub for supporting this show and for helping me look snappy at Content Marketing World.

    VOICEMAIL -  JAN_LV_gym_photo_icon_open_photo_home_screen

Hi Jan - this is what you need to do - first - get that image you want uploaded to a reliable server somewhere - if you happen to have a libsyn account - upload it via FTP into your assets folder.

Then you email yourself the direct URL for that image.

    http://assets.libsyn.com/images/tii/harrys_banner.png

In the case of an image it’s URL will be assets dot libsyn dot com slash images slash your show slug slash the file name.

Once you get that in your email - click on it - and then when the image opens - at the bottom of the screen - tap on the box with the arrow coming out and then select add to home screen - and then when ever you need to get  to an image in one tap - there it is.

Make sure the file size is smaller - less then 200k in file size - and it will open almost instantly even with a slow data connection.

You don’t need a libsyn account to do this - any service that allows you to upload and get a static URL for that file should work.  Some like libsyn will work better than others.

    hi Rob!

The app I use the most on my iPhone is the Podcasts app and I just noticed that in iOS 9, ALL available episodes of any podcast show are now showing up in the app! This is by far my favorite new feature/fix.

Also, in case anyone had episodes in their on-the-go list and is wondering where they went in the new app, they are now in the Up Next list. In order to see it when you use the app for the first time, you need to start playing an episode, then tap on the “now playing” bar at the bottom and then on the icon with three lines and three dots. All your on-the-go episodes should show up in the same order.

To add to the Up Next list, tap the three dots icon next to any podcast episode and then “Add to Up Next” to add the episode to the bottom of the list or “Play Next” to add it to the top. When you do this for the first time, you might be asked if you want to empty the Up Next list, so make sure you don’t do that if you want to keep your old on-the-go episodes.

I hope someone finds this helpful.

    Regards,

    Eddy in Sweden

    Hi Rob.

I funded the Znaps Successful Kickstarter campaign and paid for the privilege. Now apparently I have to enter a discount code in another site to claim it.

Being the suspicious type, this somehow seems wrong to me.  I've supported other campaigns and have not experienced this.

    Comments?

    Regards,

    Bob in Hamilton Ontario.

    Hi Bob,

They had such a huge number of backers, they needed to go that way.

I used it and it seemed to work fine.

They had been warning before it was over they would go this way - as otherwise it just was not going to be manageable using the Kickstarter tools.

So not something to worry about - actually would be more worried if they did not.

Yup this is for the iPad pro.

And this one had a very modest goal of $4k and has already raised about $5k - so it is funded and has until Nov 2nd at 10:!7 PM CT for you to fund this even more.

Pricing on this is $80.  You can choose between Black, Camel and Taupe

You can choose to one with the iPad Pro with the Smart Cover or one with out the smart Cover

So for those that were looking to Apple for an answer for where to put your Apple Pencil - This Kickstarter project is one answer.

Search for Pad & Pencil at kickstarter dot com or in the show notes for ep 365.

    resources-host-great-apps-and-games

    Rob,

I think you and the listeners should check this article out to clear up confusion about how big Apple TV apps will be able to get. There's a too long, didn't read at the bottom, too.

    Regards,

    Jonathan Perry

Seems iMore has an article that clears up some initial misunderstanding about how big apps can get on Apple TV.

The 200 MB app limit is for the initial download bundle.  Once you open the app it can download up to 2GB more per app.  With up to 20 GB of other resources available in the cloud.

Now it should be pointed out the initial iOS app bundle can be 2GB in size - vs just 200 MB in size for tvOS apps.

Ok - so that is a little different then how it was initially reported - but it seems odd of Apple to restrict the initial download to 200 MB - and have a min storage size of 32 GB - where as iOS devices have an initial download size of 2GB and a min storage of 16 GB - just seems not balanced.

Either way - it sounds like App devs will have plenty of room to work with to get some great looking and image rich apps on Apple TV - even if it means the initial download is only 200 MB.

My sons are already asking about Minecraft and looking forward to playing games on the Apple TV.

    http://www.theverge.com/2015/9/15/9330187/remove-

    apple-iphone-default-apps-stocks

Tim Cook said something I am not sure I like - and that is Apple may let users delete native apps they don’t use.

Seems in an interview with Buzzfeed news - Mr. Cook said he knows that Customers want this option - but some apps like messages, safari and mail are too core to the system and UI experience to be deleted.

Quote This is a more complex issue than it first appears, There are some apps that are linked to something else on the iPhone. If they were to be removed they might cause issues elsewhere on the phone. There are other apps that aren’t like that. So over time, I think with the ones that aren’t like that, we’ll figure out a way for you to remove them.” unquote

I don’t like the idea that people could uninstall the Podcasts App.  If they leave that as a critical app - sure I am fine with Compass and news and tips being removed - but Podcasts app - noooooooo - that will hurt podcasting.

Don’t expect this until at least iOS 10 if even then.  Personally I would rather just see the min size of an iPhone increased to the 32 GB size it should have been this time around.

    1:00:41

    http://www.iphonehacks.com/2015/09/iphone-

    6s-4k-video-space.html

So folks have already found out the file size of 4K videos on the new S level iPhones.  A one minute video at 4K and 30 fps will take up 375 MB of space.  vs 1080p HD video at 30 fps which takes up 130 MB of space vs 60 MB of space for a 720p 30 fps video.

So that means on a 16 GB iPhone where only about 12 GB is available.  If you had not other apps installed and no other resources taking up space - you could store about 30 minutes of Video recorded at 4k.

Of course you will not have Zero apps and resources - at best you will have 6 GB of space available or around 15 Minutes of space for 4K videos.

a 128 GB iPhone will get you over 5 Hours of video storage - assuming similar amount of apps as the iPhone with 6 GB of space.

    Hi Rob,

I had a theory about why Apple is calling Force Touch 3DTouch on the iPhone. I'm not an  Watch owner, but I believe Force Touch is a single "level." On the iPhone, they talk about pressing lightly to preview, then harder to "pop in," which sounds like there may be more than one level. I could be misinterpreting it, but seems logical.

Also, I heard something that makes a lot of sense for why there's still a 16GB model iPhone on the market. Credit goes to Adam Christianson of the Maccast for this one. He mentioned that a lot of Enterprises use the 16GB versions because they limit their employees on what content they can install on their work phones. This made a lot of sense.

    Thanks,

    Lou Valencia

    Hi Rob,

I have a good question for your show.

I want to preorder iPhone 6s and pay full price for the phone

    (no subsidy).

Which if any of the versions of the iPhone 6s (T-Mobile,AT&T,Verizon,

    Sprint) comes unlocked?

I know that it is not advertised as unlocked, but I have a feeling

some or all of the versions are unlocked assuming i pay full price for

    the phone.

    Thanks,

    Itamar

    West Hills, CA

Hi Itamar - Per an agreement with the FCC the Verizon smartphone that have LTE need to be unlocked.  So that is the one you will want if you are want to pre-order an unlocked iPhone - or you can go to the Apple Store and get one from them unlocked - it just might be a while before they have stock.

    Hi Rob,

I have an iPhone 5s that I really like however, I really want to start using apple pay and nfc functionally. Almost all of the stores I shop at regularly support apple pay so it would really add to my iOS experience. At first I thought about upgrading just to the 6 or 6plus but I figured I should wait to see what the new features would be announced for the 6s and the 6s plus to see if it would be better to go for the latest model. The other thing I'm considering is maybe keeping my iPhone 5s and go for an apple watch instead. I currently have a pebble but as you know it doesn't do nearly as much as the apple watch. If you were me what would be the better option out of the three? The 6, 6s, or watch?

Thanks for the show and keep up the great work

    -Sincerely Gabriel from Sacramento

    Hey Rob

I thought this was one of the better events

    • I didn’t miss the business statistics at all
    • I’m not a watch person (yet) so that was the least interesting to me.
    • The iPad Pro looks nice - but the real wow factor combination with the Pencil. I don’t have a real reason to buy yet though.
    • The 3D touch on the iPhones looks great too, but I think we’re holding off on upgrades for now - all purchased iPhones here.
    • I’ll bet we will buy The Apple TV -  it’s just a matter of time. If it can pause material streamed over AirPlay I think we’ll have a Holiday sale. Right now we stream a lot of content from an iMac in another room. In order to pause / resume we have to run down to the Mac. If not we’ll probably wait until there are a few great apps. Amazon app!?

The recorded stream of the keynote worked almost flawlessly - the last one was painfully bad. And hey I sort of like "One Revolution” … hadn’t ever heard them but they were pretty good.

Nothing was too awkward - except maybe Eddie Cue’s shirt 😁

    Thanks,

    -Dan

Ok - this one seems too funny to be true - but it has been widely reported - so sure - lets go with it.  Seems in China in the past and even very recent past people were trying to sell organs to get an iPhone - well now they can sell a part of them that does not require an surgery to remove - actually no pain at all - quite the opposite.  A Sperm Bank in China is looking to pay for donations with enough cash to get a new iPhone - there are certain criteria you need to meet - such as being over 5’ 4” tall, and possess a college degree and have no genetic diseases.  I guess that gives a whole new definition to force touch.

    Insert RIM SHOOT here

In what I would assume is completely un-related news - it appears the Fist bump had replaced the hand shake at Apple Stores in China.

For the iPhone 6S - All storage levels Rose gold was out at 2 to 3 weeks - all others colors and storage options still available on 9/25.  Still the same on Tuesday night - except with Verizon - the silver 128 gb was also 2 to 3 weeks for delivery.

Looking on line it seems the iPhone 6S Plus was at 3 to 4 weeks for delivery for all options for all carriers by Saturday night and that is basically all carriers world wide that were pre-selling the 6S and 6S+

Note in China all versions of the 6S were at 2 to 3 weeks by Saturday night.

Apple will not release numbers typically until Monday or Tuesday after launch weekend.  Normally on Monday.  For past history here is how first weekend sales went.

Original iPhone around 250,000 units.  3G - 1 Mil units, 3GS - also 1 Mil units, 4 - 1.7 Mil units, 4S - 4 Mil units, 5 - 5 Mil units,  5S and 5C - 9 Mil units,  6 and 6+ - 10 Mil units.  And for the 6S and 6S+ - well it likely will be at least 11 Mil units - but here is the thing - at this point it is really not about demand - we know demand it greater than 11 Mil units - it is about supply and logistics - how many units can Apple ship in that first weekend is the real question - and Apple can be sand bagging - where they purposefully release just 11 mil units - so next year they can release 12 mil units and so on.  I mean I am not saying they ARE doing that - just that well you know - they could be. By the way if I was going to put a number on it - I think Apple will report 12 to 12.5 Mil units sold in the first weekend of sales.  12.5 - would mean a 25% increase over last year - and that just sounds really nice.

Regardless of the actual number we need to realize that the iPhone 6S and especially the 6S+  and even more specifically the Rose Gold versions - will be in short supply through the end of 2015 into early 2016.  The real question is on the Jan quarterly conference call if Tim cook says they are still with more demand than supply at the end of 2015 - or if supply and demand were in balance at the end of 2015.  That is really when we will know more about how well the new iPhones sold.

Especially since - a lot of this first weekends sales will actually be counted in Apples next fiscal quarter.

    6s-has-2gb-ram.html

A bunch of people seemed to be doing testing with Xcode to figure out the amount of ram in the different iOS devices - and it seems the consensus is 2GB of RAM for the 6S and 6S+.  With 4GB of ram for the iPad Pro.

So it does look like that item is checked off on the bingo card.

    09:42

    http://tii.libsyn.com/september-9th-2015-rumor-bingo-card

So how did we do on the bingo card this year.  Well like in past years - some things expect did not happen - but less so this year than in past years.  Or put another way - not a lot of surprises at the September event - based on rumors out there.

Per the items that were Check marks on the bingo Card.

2 GB RAM for the iPhone

12 MP Rear Camera for the iPhone

4K Video Recording on the iPhone\

    Apple TV 4th Gen

That gave us our only bingo from bottom left to top right.

    Other items that happened:

    Force Touch

    A9 Processor w/ M9 Motion Processor

    6S and 6S+ announced

Min storage for iPhones stays at 16 GB

Apple TV touch pad remote w/ motion sensor

    Apple TV App Store

Apple TV remote w/ Siri control

iPhones built w/ 7000 series aluminum

Apple TV with 32 GB storage

    iPad Pro announced

Those we are not sure - but think not:

    Full NFC access

    LynX camera Module

Those that almost happened - but were just off a little:

    Bluetooth 4.1 - was actually 4.2

3 to 5 MP 1080p HD Facetime Camera - yes on the 5 MPixels - nope on the 1080p Video

New Apple TV $199 to $249 price  - Nope - it was just $149 and $199

Then there are those did not Happen:

    iPhone 5S killed off

Rose Gold Special Edition of iPhone 6S+ - but wait - they announced a Rose Gold version - yes - but not real gold - and not uber expensive as the rumor had it.

Apple Tv to be Home-kit Hub

Camera Flush w/ back of iPhone  - likely proves it is not the LynX module.

     5C replaced by 4" 6C

So again - just one bingo - but there were 14 items which happened out of 24 - and that is more than any past bingo card I can remember.  Plus 2 more that still have a small chance of being correct.

    the-complete-iphone-6s-camera-improvements-guide.html

There is a nice article from Jonny Evans at Computer world that goes over the iPhone 6S camera improvements.

In the article he talks about the Bigger Sensor.  The size increase is to help it focus faster and should reduce the number of artifacts captures when you a take a photo.

He also talks about more focus pixels for much faster autofocusing.

Color accuracy improvements by using an Apple designed image signal processor.

And the previously mentioned Deep trench - which leads to better isolation and less cross talk or bleed of colors.

Other topics he covers are the improved FaceTime camera, Retina Flash, Live Photos, Optical Image stabilization, and 4K Video

In all a lot of the major updates for the S series were camera related.

    iphone-6s-6s-cheapest-article-1.2362005

Thanks to Dr. John for this next one.

Which is an article on the cheapest ways to get a new iPhone 6S or 6S+.  And they talk about which plan and payment options are best.

But it does come down to this.  Going with T-Mobile in the US seems to be the cheapest option.

T-mobile is also offering $125 discount on new iPhones for users willing to sign up for the Jump on Demand plan and its 18 month lease structure.

A lot of the lease offerings from Sprint and T-Mobile - and similar offerings now from AT&T and Verizon - usually end up with you handing over your old device to upgrade next year.  IF you don’t have kids - and have no one to pass on the old devices - then maybe a lease makes sense for you.

Personally I will not sell my old devices - with a wife and two children - there are lots of old iOS devices that are in demand in this house.

If your goal is to spend the least amount long term - then going with T-Mobile seems to be once again the best option.  If you travel a lot - through out the US - then maybe Verizon makes the most sense for you - but it will cost you more.

If you don’t travel at all - then look to see what carrier is best in your local market for coverage.  Price wise T-mobile is better then sprint - which is better then AT&T and Verizon - which traditionally have been either very close to each other or identical.

Lastly there is the Apple Plan - where you make payments for the device - but can upgrade next year.  And you get an unlocked phone and Apple Care + coverage and you pick your carrier - but you must go to an Apple store physically to get that option - and that means waiting in line on the 25th.  It is not a bad deal if you are going to be getting Apple Care Coverage and looking to upgrade yearly.  But again you need to be at an Apple store to get this deal - and not until the 25th.

    Hi Rob,

Jerry on episode 362 asked if anyone else was still waiting for their TrackR that they backed on Indegogo. I saw that they are commercially available now so I opened a support ticket with them asking when I could expect mine. I got a quick response apologizing for the delay in my order. They said they would get mine shipped right away. It arrived about a week later.

    Hi Rob!

Philip here, from the home of the 13-time NFL World Champion Green Bay Packers!

Ran into a problem with Apple Pay - transactions started getting declined, and I couldn't tell why. Had to call my bank, who told my the expiration date was wrong, that's why the charges were declined.

Then it hit me - I had received a new card since the time I originally added that card to Apple Pay.

Unfortunately, there is no way in Apple Pay settings to see the card's expiration date to confirm or anticipate this, let alone no way to update the card info. I hope Apple addresses this shortcoming, as you lose all history when you remove a credit card from Apple Pay.

So here is the tip: anytime you receive a new/replacement credit card, you should remove and re-add that card in Apple Pay.

Keep up the great work, and,

    GO PACK GO!!!

    Regards

    Phil

Well Phil - thanks for that tip.  Me and the family will be up in Greenbay for the Monday night game against the Chiefs - have some very nice suite seats.    We will likely be the only family of four wearing Cheifs jersey’s well ok one of just a few families in Cheifs Jersey’s.  Go Chiefs.

    Hi Rob,

you mention that the TV remote had a IR receiver. The reason for the IR receiver in the TV remote is to interact with your TV via its IR receiver, so you can control volume and power on and off. Which for me is should have been obsolete a long time ago, why hasn't the TV industry introduced a Bluetooth remote to kill off the horrible line of site issue. I willing to bet the copying machines are starting up now(SAMSUNG,SONY,VIZIO, ETC.)

    Regards,

    Saul Lowery

Dooohh - Yeah - was not thinking that the remote would be changing the volume on your TV - figured it was controlled via the Apple box.  Also noticed it said you can program to turn on/off the TV - so yeah per your comments looks like the IR part is to talk with your TV.  Thanks for the comment.  My only question right now is do I get 1 Apple TV 4th gen or do I get 2?

    Quote

There is a Difference between Force Touch and 3D Touch

According to Apple patents, there is another level of sensitivity of Force Touch that will be used in the new iPhones. Basically, these two technologies do the same things, but what you’ll see in the newest iPhones is an additional level of sensitivity. Simply put, Force Touch has less capability to measure your touches and presses and doesn’t react as quickly to your input, whereas the new 3D Touch is highly sensitive and reacts immediately, while also allowing different “levels” of actions based on how firmly you press.

It might sound like an indistinguishable difference, but anyone who wants just a little bit more out of Force Touch (or really, really loves it) on the Apple Watch might disagree. With the Watch, you can push and wait for the click.. and that’s it. Now, 3D Touch offers functions based on a lighter push or a firmer push. And if you ever felt that you had to force Force Touch on the Watch, 3D Touch should alleviate that with its higher sensitivity.

    After the Event thoughts

Most of what I thought would happen did. The iPhones, The iPad Pro. Which is the best iOS device to date.

I did get most of what I was thinking with the Apple TV 2. But oddly bemused by Apple adding older technology and not redesigning the hockey Puck design.

So HDMI 1.4. Not even HDMI 1.4a which was new in 2009. USB TO lightning connector. Not even. USB- C to Lightning.

Might be able to do 4K at 30 fps. But really only HD 1080p. Not UHD. So kinda out of date before opening the box

The compatibility with third party controllers is good. Also you can use your iPhones and Touches as controllers to play games to.

The new tvOS is good and compatible across platforms Mac and iOS 9

Disappointed, no National and International Stations added. No Apple subscription Video Service. But, TV app Store and Development Kit that allows ONE Universal App that works across platforms.

No Notification support to iPhones, Watches or Macs of when your program is on or recording.

No Apple TV App for the iPhones to schedule programming. Or from the Apple watch for that matter..

Sorta Hot and cold on the New Apple TV

oh. And looses the optical Audio Output. Thats real sad.

    Just saying. Thoughts?

    http://www.bane-tech.com/best-ios-9-features/

Lets talk iOS 9 - First - I still recommend you wait until the 26th or later to update to iOS 9.  And so far early feedback has been mostly positive.

Some of you will email and say I don’t do any of your recommended steps and all is fine.  Kudos to you - and consider yourself lucky.  because others will email in and say they wished they listened.  As always - follow the procedures I have outlined in the PDF in the Tii app - under PDF’s.

It is at the top of the list for PDF’s and titled Recommended Update procedure for iOS - and again I do recommend you wait until the 26th.

One key reason to wait is that Apples servers get slammed the first few days and that means longer times for authentication of the update.  And a site call Crittercism - has a model they run to predict new iOS updates - and it is showing that iOS 9 will be updated sooner by more people then iOS 8 was by a wide margin.

But beyond even the issue of servers being overloaded is the fact Apple would not even let devs submit their updates to be specifically for iOS 9 until this past week.  So some of your critical apps are likely still going through the approval process.  If you are someone that is not willing to jailbreak - then you should not update in the first 10 days.  last year I did not even update my wife’s iPhone until iOS 8.1.  If you need your iOS device for work - wait until the 26th at least and then do the update on your first day of your end of the work week.

Yes I know some of you will do and have done the update - and I will have their feed back later in the episode. I do believe iOS 9 will go much smoother then iOS 8 - and I hope on the next episode to say there is no need to wait until 9.1 to update - but we still need to see how the reports come in from users.

Ok - Now lets really talk iOS 9 - I went back through my notes of the betas and wanted to go over some of the key new features and where to find them.

But first - as I said when Beta 1 came out some features make it some do not to the GM - one that did not - was being able to turn the flash on and off while video recording.  Sadly that is not in iOS 9.0 GM.

As is the ability to email 15 photos at once - which was in beta 1 but not in the GM.

So sadly two of the features I most liked in the original beta are not there in the GM.

But what is there for 9.0 that is new and best of for features.

Obviously there is the new low Battery Mode.  This can be turned on under Settings - Battery.  Now when you iOS device gets to the 20% battery remaining warning - you get the option right in the pop up to turn on Low Power Mode or to close the pop up.  When you go to Setting - Battery - you can see the apps using the most battery life for the last 24 hours.

One of my favorite new features - lower case letters on the keyboard when it is lower case and upper case when the caps lock is on.  It is a minor thing - but one I have really liked.  I have seen some say they don’t like this feature - which is turned on by default - if you are one that does not like lowercase letters on your keyboard - you can change it back - by going to

Settings —> Accessibility —> Keyboard - and slide off “Show lower case keys”  Again it is something I really like - but others no so much.

Passbook - is now called Wallet.

The notes app is greatly improved.  And depending on the iOS device you have - you may be able to draw pictures in the note app now.  Or add a picture.

You can add in a check list.  Which I really like - as I have been using that for when I have to go to the store - in the past I made a list and deleted each item as I found it in the store.  Now I just tap next to the item and the circle fills with yellow and a white check mark.  I no it is a a small addition - but one for me that I like.  Adding in the ability to also format text is another plus I like.  I was a big user of the note app anyway - now more so.

Remember to activate the extra features for Notes - you need to go to your notes folders - and select Notes under on my phone.

The main new app for iOS 9 - is the News App if you are in the US, Australia and the UK.  Which is essentially a flipboard killer.  Or as I wrote back on Ep 351 quote

Essentially with the news app you can create your own customize news feed.  They have partnerships with major news outlets and ESPN.  But it will also support blogs. You can really add in any blogs or news source you want.  But clearly - the ones that look the best are the ones Apple partnered with.  To start with this will launch in the US, UK and Australia. unquote  For the most part I have been using it just for searching for Apple and iOS news.  I would imagine in College Basketball season that I will add in info for the Flyers.   Again this is for those in the US, UK and Australia at right now - but at least one report of someone in the UK not seeing it.

In the Photo App there are now more folders for your photos.  One for Selfies is added to iOS9 as is a screenshots folder.  Those join depending your device - Panoramas, Videos, Slo-Mo, time-lapse as specialty folders.  Plus there are also folders in the photo app for 3rd party apps - like instagram and fotor.

Public transit also made it ways to the Maps app in iOS 9 - For some areas - definitely not all.  In the maps app - type in where you want to go - then tap the I in the lower right - and select transit to get info.  Or when you tap the car next to the destination pin - you can also select Transit or Walk as options.  Being I am in the burbs of Kansas City - when I try for Transit - I get the message - Transit directions are not available.

Siri offers more options and is quote proactive unquote.  And if you are at the main home screen and swipe to the right.  You will see a new screen with siri suggestions for contacts and oft used apps based on where you are and what time it is.  And then items nearby and news.

Other Changes in iOS 9 with Siri - if you pull down from the center of the screen - it gives you some Siri App suggestions.  Again Siri is now more then just a cheeky little virtual assistant - it is now also a predictive virtual assistant looking at your habits and patterns to guess what you will want to do next.  Again for some that means on a Friday night when you pull down on the center of the screen snap chat, tinder and Uber will come up.  For us married folks it will be netflix, HBO Now and ESPN Apps.

In iOS 9 when you make a hotel or airline reservation and get the email confirmation on that - it will add it right into your calendar.  And that worked great - I made a hotel reservation for the 26th to the 29th at a Hotel in Fond du luc WI - go up for the Chiefs / Packers game - that was as close as I could find a hotel - but I digress - anyway I made that reservation and it added it to my Calendar.

If you have an iPad Air 2 - there is also split screen where you can have two apps open at once.  That will be really nice on the iPad Pro.

    Hi Rob,

In Ep 363 you apologize in advance for saying “H E Y  Siri" with the new always on mode.

Good news!!! iOS9 now has you train Siri so she only answers to your own voice. I have the iOS 9 GM installed and that was one of the changes from beta 5.

I tested it with a few different people and none of them could set off my “H E Y Siri"

.. also enjoy your new TV, I'll be getting one also, as long as Apple lets the Plex app through. That was the reason I had to move away from the TV originally 😃

    Regards,

    -Dan

    https://www.3dissue.com/content-blocker/

One of the new features in iOS 9 that Apple announced and some people do not like - and by People I mean advertisers.  Is Content Blockers.

One thing I think there is confusion on - is that this is not built in - this is something Apple will allow 3rd parties to build and then you install.  These are extensions for Safari that will stop the browser from loading online ads, pop-ups, and also other content that slows down browsing and consumes processor resources - i.e. tracking scripts, cookies, images, auto-play videos and audio and more.

Tech Crunch had a review of 3 that are not yet launched in the app store - 1Blocker,  Blockr - sans the e and Crystal.

All threes of these have a premium or paid aspect.

Essentially what all three will do is make it possible for you to clear out a lot of the clutter and bogus Ad tracking scripts going on in the background when you visit a site.  This means less data downloading to your device - which is good.  And less CPU usage which means better battery life - also good.  And much faster load times for those sites that are full of ad tracking stuff.

1Blocker for example ships with 7,000 pre-installed blockers.  For sites like Wired, Mashable, The Verge, ZDNet and the NY Times - 1Blocker stopped 49.9% of data from being loaded.  And with Business insider it saw an 84.5% blocking of data.  iMore it was an 82.3% blocking of data.

With Crystal for example for 10 popular websites - it blocked 53% of the data and resulted in 3.9 times faster page loads on average.

1Blocker and Blockr offer varies levels of customization.  Crystal is more of a one setting fits all type.  If you are techie the first two will be more to your liking - if you are not - then Crystal may be best for you.  I am sure there will be a lot of these type of apps out soon.

The bad news - if you are a site like iMore or Business insider - your revenue is going to plummet,  The good news - Podcasting just became in more valuable to Advertisers trying to get their message out.

Of course what sites will likely do in the short term is ratchet up their use of scripts and tracking info - to offset for those small % at first that do block all that data.  Which of course will slow down sites even more for regular users and cause more people to install content blockers.

So if you were not planning of using a content blocker - it is something you really should consider.

Per that - I would like to send out a request to listeners - if you are using a content blocker - which one are you using - how much does it cost - and how well is it working for you.  Try doing some page loads at iMore, Business insider, ZDnet and The Verge and see the load time with it on and off for the same articles.  Let me know your favorites - it is something I want to put together a nice list on to see which people like the most and which work the best based on your feedback - 206-666-6364 - 206 moon dog or send an email to today in iOS at gmail dot com

So lets go into some feedback from those at update and one to start from an unnamed source

quote Hey Rob, thought I'd give you a little insight action of course this is all confidential. Apples update servers were down today for 26 minutes.

Based on call volume it appears that all updates are going really smoothly. unquote  Name very redacted and email deleted and deleted and deleted. Thanks redacted.

And that report matches up well with what we saw in the Google+ community where we had a bunch of people reporting issues trying to download the update when it first was available. It looks like from 12:10 PM CT to 12:35 PM CT - people were reporting issues trying to download - After 12:35 PM CT it seemed new reports were just that it is downloading and no real issues.

    G’day Rob,

Decided to do a clean install of 9.0, so I backed up everything and wiped my 6+. Installation took about an hour, plus the time to restore from backup. My only issue was losing all my AppleWatch data; apparently that doesn't get stored anywhere off the phone itself. Lost my five months of perfect goals, but I can deal with that. I'm assuming this wouldn't be an issue for anyone who simply updates without restoring to factory defaults.

    Regards,

    Ian.

    airdrop-ios-vulnerability/

    Hi Rob,

I Came across this post today recommending an update to iOS 9.0 to fix a vulnerability in Airdrop. I guess if you want to hold off on an immediate update to the new OS then turing off Airdrop or restricting to Contacts only would suffice? Also, got the new iPad Mini 4 on order, will update on performance & usability when I get my hands on it. Hoping for Air2 performance in a smaller package, we will see. Thanks for what you do for the iOS community.

     Cheers,

Julian. Norwich, UK. (PS the 'W' is silent in the Norwich, don't ask me why)

Hi Julian - thanks for the heads up - first note this is all theoretical - there were no reports of it in the wild.  But Apple did patch it in iOS 9 - so here is one reason to update to iO9.

Essentially in theory what this exploit would allow is for an un-authoried user to install a malicious app on your device via Air drop - even if you did not accept that app offering.

Note - the simplest way to avoid this is to keep Air Drop turned off - unless you are going to actually use it and do so in a closed work environment or at home - not out at the local pub.

Apples has patched this - and iOS 9 has the patch - so when you update - this is a non-issue - but for those holding off updating for 10 day - yeah - just turn off air drop - which again you should have off unless you are planning on using it - for battery drain reasons.

A nice kudos goes out to 9 to 5 Mac and Mark Gurman for getting the rumor right about force touch actually going to be called 3D touch.

I know I slam quite a few for their poor predictions - so only fair to say kudos when someone nails the rumor dead on.

    ipad-pro/index.html

I guess I should also say kudos to all those that said the larger iPad was going to be announced - too many to name there.  I guess everyone one but me and Ken Ray or so it seems.

CNN Money even went so far as to predict before the event that the iPad Pro announcement would be the most important one of the September 9th event.

In many ways I agree - I think the iPad Pro is not being given its do.  Part of that might be because you know Apple announced it two month early - and there are a bunch of other products actually launching before then.

Again not bitter about being wrong on that - just thinking they could have waited - that is all.  Nope not bitter.

Anyway - I am looking forward to talking about the iPad Pro more in October episodes of Tii.  No reason to talk about it more now - given you know how far off its launch and pre-order dates are going to be.  Just Sayin.

    ransomware-spreading-across-american-devices-641671/

    Hi Rob,

I just sent you a flipboard article about Android Ransomware which I thought you might find interesting.

    Kind regards

    Simon Readman (pronounced Reedman…)

Thanks Simon - And this is yet another article about Ransomware and Android and a new one effecting those in the US. It is called Android locker pin dot A and it is pretty cool or nasty depending on your perspective.

Afte a users is infected the software will try to trick you into granting it device admin rights.  And it does it in a way most users will fall for it.  Once the software has admin rights - it can change your PIN number and lock your out of your android smartphone.  Then users are presented a fake FBI message page claiming the users has been viewing prohibited pornographic material.  And they they should pay a $500 fine for said activities.

And if you don’t drop out into serf mode right away and uninstall the malware - it can lock you out of your phone by generating a random pin number.

Now the good news for Android users - so far this has not been located in the GooglePlay store - so far.  You get this by downloading an infected app from one of the un-offical app stores.  77% of the infected users of this app are in the US.  So it clearly is on a few mainstream 3rd party sites for Android apps.

Oh - the fun with Android.  Thanks again Simon for the heads up.

Hi Scott - The 6S depth increased to 0.28 inches from 0.27 inches.

The depth of 6S+ increased to 0.29 inches from 0.28 inches.  The height increased to 6.23 inches from 6.22 inches,  The width increased to 3.07 inches from 3.06 inches.

Interestingly - the 6S had the same height and widths as the 6.

    Hey Rob

I have friends that are Samsung Galaxy users. They like to send me videos of certain things. The problem is that they leave the video settings on default which is 4k. When they send it to my iPhone 6 via text (short clip), the video comes in at poor quality. I hope apple has found a solution to this when users send 4k videos from the iPhone 6s to older iPhones.

    Regards,

    AJ

Hi AJ - I think that is something we will find out really quick.  but I imagine it will look fine on iOS devices.  At least as good as it can look on those displays.

    Hi Rob,

No mention of HomeKit working with the new Apple Tv.  Do think this is something we can expect thru software to interface our home to Apple?

    Thanks, love the show,

Dave (aka gasmandave) from Erie PA

Hi Dave - Erie PA was one of the cities I lived in - I was there for two winters and one summer.  It is where I was living when I started podcasting back in 2004.  Ok - per your question - It is something I thought would be announced - it is possible there will still be an October event - where apple shows off some new macs and home kit is part of it - OR not.  But yes I would imagine at some Point Apple TV and HomeKit will converge.

    Hi Rob,

Do you know if or when Apple will allow for a VPN connection to be toggled on and off in the AppleTV?  It would make a huge difference for those of us who live outside the US to be able to use a lot of the new Apple TV Apps.

Thanks a lot, and I love your show and listen every week,

    Regards,

    Allan

Hi Allan that would be Right about the time the devil is fitted for a new pair of Jacksons or Harlicks.

I think with Apple trying so hard to get a TV / Movie distribution agreement in place with those content providers - any thing like that - might not go over so well with said video content providers

    sensel-morph-interaction-evolved

For a kickstarted project this week we have the Sensel Morph.

This one had a goal of $60k and is now at around $400k with October 9th at 10:42 PM CT being the end time for this - so plenty of more time for additional funders.

So what is the Sensel Morph - it is quote the first pressure sensitive, multi-touch input device that enabled users to interact with the digital world like never before unquote

It will run you $249 - and it is a multi-touch interface for your iPad or computer.

It connects to your computer via USB and to your iPad via Bluetooth.

You can get overlays for keyboards typing and keyboards musical.  There are gaming and art overlays as well as a drum pad and music production controller.

It even has a dev cable for connecting to arduino - so this is a pretty versatile accessory.

This is very similar to how 3D touch works - in how it senses you pushes on the surface.

    If you want more info on this search for Sensel Morph - two words spelled - S E N S E L   M O R P H

over at kickstarter dot com or via the show notes for ep 364 at today in iOS dot com.

Thanks to all that sent in this next one - which is a external battery pack - Yawn you say - but no - yawn you must not.  As this is a Light saber external battery pack.

This one is a replica of Darth Vaders Light saber.

It has 2800 mah of capacity - but does that matter - no - because it is a light saber.

It will run you about $52 US for this.

    Awesome this does look.

    Show notes link is in

Extra note - one of the reviews on the site said this feels like a novelty item and it is very plasticity and fragile to hold.

And its size is actually much smaller than a normal size lightsaber.

For Yoda this size does fit.

But still if you are a star wars collector - this is something unique for your collection - but it does not sound like a very practical item for the road warrior.

I guess if you really want a geeky device to go with your iPhone you can get one of the BB-8 droids from SPhero.  This is the round droid that has a head that seems to float on the top of the body.

Which is a short little post showing a picture of one of the Apple Tv’s sent out to a developer for a buck.  Seems the first thing devs do when they get an Apple TV is forget the first rule of Fight Club - and they start posting and tweeting and instagramming

And again it would be oh so wrong if you were a dev that received an Apple TV for a buck to call 206-666-6364 with your thoughts on the new black Box of TV and now Game goodness.  Yeah - would be really really wrong.

    http://www.apple.com/apple-events/september-2015/

I could go over the event in the order it was presented - but nahhh - not going to do it. Rather I am going to talk about the product I have been waiting for the most first.  The 4th Gen Apple TV.  FINALLLLLYYYYY!!!!

The Apple TV starts 52 Minutes into the keynote.

Tim Cook started off talking about the TV experience and how stagnant it has been and how Today Apple is going to do something about it - and Apple’s vision for the future of TV - and that is APPS.  Tim said there are some key features that need to be in place.

    1. Powerful Hardware

    2. Modern OS

    3. New User Experience

    4. Developer Tools

    and 5. an App Store

Tim said they know this is what it takes to make a difference and they have been working very hard - and very long - with a little emphasis on the long part to a smattering of laughter - It was Tim’s way of saying Yes Rob - we know the Apple TV is over due.  Well maybe not me specifically - but generically me and all those of us that have been waiting for an Apple TV with apps and an Apps store.

Eddy Cue then came on to introduce the Apple TV specs.

First up is the new Remote - which per the rumors is both voice and touch controlled.  The top part of the remote is a touch surface.  The bottom part is buttons.  The key new buttons that I am sooooooo happy to see - Volume control  No more needing both the TV remote and the Apple tv remote - just the Apple TV remote - oh yeah.  Hey sometimes it is the little things that make me happy.

Another new button is the Siri button - where you can now control the Apple TV with Siri - saying such things as show me all the star wars movies.  Or less specific such as show me science fiction TV shows.

But here is the best part of the search - Siri will not just give you search results sorted by popularity - but when you go and look at a show you want to view - it will also say what apps it is available from - such as iTunes, Hulu, Netflix, HBO and showtime - right now - and more will be added over time - hopefully Amazon Prime is part of the more and the time is not that far off.  How this works is for example you could say show me the goonies - and you would see what apps it is available in and you can pick the one you already have a subscription with.  This is in my mind one of the best new features and will get even better as it supports more apps over time.

On the sports side - I could see a lot of sports app packages and you could say show me the Dayton Flyers game - and it would show you what apps it is available on.

Or an example they gave on Siri search - was show me the modern family episode with edward norton.  And it takes you right to that episode.

And then they showed another cool feature.  You can ask Siri what did they say.  And siri will jump you back 15 seconds and temporarily turn on the captions.  Sweet.

Or as Melissa D in the Google plus community said

Quote As a person with some hearing loss, I like that "what did she say" functionality that turns on closed captions in addition to skipping back 15 seconds.  Nice! unquote

That one received a lot of applause.

Other new features with the Remote - as rumored - it has a motion sensor - so yes - it is a game remote in competition with the Wii Remote.  But Rob - does that mean I need to buy another remote if I want to play a two player game? you ask  NOPE - because you can also use an iPhone or iPad as an additional controller.

Per the Apple TV OS - they are calling it TV OS - and There is Developer tools - with access to GameKit, GameController, SpriteKit, Game Center, CoreGraphics, CoreAudio, Metal and more - in other words the things devs will need to make games for the Apple TV.

But apps will be more than just Games and Media.  They also talked about apps from Air BnB, Zula and the shopping Apps.

For devs - they are allowing Universal Apps - that means with a single purchase the users get the app on their Apple TV, iPad and iPhone.  That is nice for the end users.  And that includes syncing of data between apps - so maybe you are playing a universal game app on your iPhone at work - not that such a thing would ever happen.  Then when you get home you can pick right up on the Apple TV.

tvOS - that is lower case t - lower case v - upper case O upper case S - And the developer Beta is available now.

Per the Hardware that is the Apple TV unit - it as expected has a 64 bit A8 Chip,  Bluetooth 4.0  - yes - this has been in the works quite a long time if it is only Bluetooth 4.0 - more on that later,   Wifi is 802.11 AC with memo.  And it has an IR receiver.  I am guessing the IR receiver is for legacy use with Master IR remotes.  Because they state for control it is Bluetooth and no need to point at the unit.

Per the remote - it is also Bluetooth 4.0.  Once more it has the Volume control, and the Siri button.  It has a power button to turn on and off your TV as well. It also has a menu button.   As mentioned it is a motion controlled remote with accelerometer and gyroscope.  And lasts for a full 3 month per single charge with normal use.  And to recharge it - you plug in a lightening plug - I am guessing you have a few of those around somewhere.

It does come in two models - 32 GB and 64 GB - which are actually double what some were rumoring.  And the Price is lower than many predicted - although some did get it right - pricing is just $149 for the 32 GB version and $199 for the 64 GB version - which of course is the one I will be getting.  The 3rd gen Apple TV remains at the $69 price point.

As I said on the last show - don’t compare the price of the new Apple TV to a roku or similar device - this is a game unit and a media device - and the price of this at $149 is well below similar devices - not to mention game pricing will be much lower as well.

It sounded like they said Devs could get the hardware today as well - Looking into that As soon as this episode is done if not sooner.

Per availability to all the non-devs - It will start rolling out in Late October and will be available in 100 countries by the end of 2015.

That introduction of Apple TV went on for right at 31 minutes.

(iPhone starts at the 83 Minute mark)

Which it took us only XX minutes to go over - I just saved you YY minutes of your life - you are welcome.

Lets go over some of the specs or items not specifically covered for Apple TV.  1 - the actual dimensions of the remote - which is 4.88 inches long by 1.5 Inches wide and 0.25 inches thick and weighs in at 1.66 ounces.

The old remote by comparison is 4.7 inches x 1.2 inches x 0.2 inches.

The console itself is the same 3.9 x 3.9 inches - but the thickness of the unit increases from 0.9 inches to 1.3 inches.  And it does come with a lightning to USB cable.  So actually look at as you get another lightning cord to use for other devices 89 out of each 90 days.

Interestingly it has a USB-C port - which Apple lists as service only - Oh yeah - jailbreak and kickstarter - in the future I do see.

WIFI is also 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac not just AC as mentioned in the keynote.

Per Video supported - h.264 Video up to 1080P - 60 frames per second - which is nice for good HD video for sports.

Per accessibility features - apple claims the following are included:

    Voiceover

    Zoom

    Bold Text

    Increase Contrast

    Reduce Motion

    Closed Caption and SDH support

    Accessiblity Shortcut

Another item not mentioned - is a remote loop sold separately that attaches to the remote to keep it from flying out of your hand.  Kickstarter project for 3rd party remote starting in 3, 2,…

Yeah - plenty of opportunities for kickstarter and the new Apple TV I can see already.

One the last episode I wondered if the new Apple TV would support 3rd party controllers and the answer is YES. From Apple quote

For serious gamers, the new Apple TV supports MFi-based controllers that let you run, jump, shoot, kick, throw, punch, or just about any other verb you can imagine.*

    unquote

MFI - means made for iThings.

One remote that Apple shows on their site is the Nimbus Steelseries controller - This is supposedly going to sell for $50 - when available.

    http://www.idownloadblog.com/2015/09/09/apple-tv-app-limit-200mb/

Yes the Apple TV 4th gen looks great - so what is the downside.  Other than the extra $50 or $100 bucks.

It seems that apple has put a 200 MB limit on Apple TV apps.  Meaning some of the bigger and more popular apps like the Infinity Blade Trilogy and other graphic intensive games - running in the 1GB range - need to be reworked to meet this 200 MB limit.

Hmmm - Apple thinks apps that are 200 MB are to big for a device that starts at 32 GB - ohhh - I smell hypocrisy coming later in the show.

It seems Apple is saying anything beyond 200MB in size needs to be split apart and loaded using on demand resources.

In other words - parts of the apps need to remain in the cloud.  Thanks Apple - from us the users - for putting more network strain on our internet use - and for making devs store crap in the cloud.

Another issue is there is not persistent local storage for apps on Apple TV - that means every app developed for Apple TV must be able to store data in the cloud and retrieve it in quote a way that provides a great customer experience unquote.  I mean unlike the great user experience when the data is right there on the device when needed?

I wonder how this is going to work with Minecraft?

On the Xbox version there is a bunch that is saved on the devices storage.

I hope this is a policy decision Apple soon reverses.

I will say this - when looking at the two options - 32 GB or 64 GB - do not let this rule make your decision for you.  Eventually I will see Apple backing off this rule.  If you want the best user experience that will mean larger apps and local storage.  It might not be next year but at some point - I do see Apple changing their tune on this.

That is why I am getting the 64 GB version when it is available.

Ok - I did go and check the dev center about the Apple TV dev kit here is what apple is saying:

quote - We want to give Apple developers the chance to build and test their apps on the new Apple TV before it becomes publicly available to customers later this fall. Register by September 11, 12:00 p.m. PDT for an opportunity to order an Apple TV Developer Kit. Availability and supplies are limited.

The Apple TV Developer Kit is provided for your own software development activities only. Prior to Apple’s commercial release of Apple TV, you agree not to publicly write about, review, or display the Apple TV Developer Kit  unquote

Thankfully there was no restriction listed about talking about the restrictions or the offer - which will cost those devs that are selected - $1.  Yes - just $1 - Kudos apple - I think it is safe to say the Apple TV is not just a hobby anymore.

Of course any Devs that do get one - calling into the show with your experience anonymously would be something I could NEVER EVER EVER recommend you do - I mean saying to call 206-666-6364 - and to give your feedback - that would be completely wrong of me and again not anything I would ever think of - because you know that might mean the next Apple event I would not be invited to.  So yeah 206-666-6364 is not the number you should call in with your experiences with the new Apple TV - and if anyone did call into that number - I am sure I would have to delete any records of those calls.  Just sayin.

    http://www.macrumors.com/2015/09/08/periscope-apple-tv-app/

Speaking of someone that may have been punished by Apple for speaking when they should not have - there is Periscope and Twitter.

Seems there were some rumors in the days leading up to the Apple Event that Periscope would have an App for Apple TV.  Where users could watch Periscope Videos - But shockingly there was not a single mention of it at the event.  Likely because if - and this is a big if - but if they had been invited to speak - that all went out the window when someone on the Periscope team blabbed to TechCrunch.  Yes - Apple absolutely would punish anyone with loose lips - and that means no Keynote for you.  Again that is all speculation at this point. It is completely possible someone at Periscope simply was conjecturing about the potential of apps for Apple TV and said they would build those apps if possible.  Ahhh who are we kidding - Tim Cook spanked them like a 5 year old that just tried to light the cat on fire.

Then you talk - and discuss what kind of cloths you are looking for - pants or shirts or jackets or whatever - and Then you get a trunk sent out to you full of clothes that fit perfectly and look great - that you get to try on - on your own - in your house - no rush - no pressure - no one generically saying you look great in that.     You get to walk around where you get a real feel for the cloths.  I had three different Sports coats slash blazers sent in my trunk - All of them looked great and were of course from the best brands - I then went and tried those on with my different shirts I already owned - I then was easily able to figure out the one that worked best with what I already had - AND also was different from what I already owned.  So now I have a great new sports coat that really compliments what I already owned - I am wearing that sports coat here in Cleveland at Content Marketing World.  Yes - I am officially a trunk club customer and it could not have been any easier.  I did get a few very positive and nice comments about my new sports coat while at the show.  I said thanks and quick stated that it came from Trunk club.

One thing I really liked about the Trunk Club experience is that I was able to try on the different items and see how they did or did not differ from what I already owned.  Which was nice as helps to keep you from buying duplicates. you simply put the items back in the trunk you don’t want.

keep what you like - send back the rest - and there is no pressure to keep anything.

    Hi Rob,

You were finally right about the Apple TV! I plan on picking one up the day it comes out in October.

As for the iPhone's I know you say that the "s" updates are the bigger updates but maybe I missed something I wasn't super pumped about what I saw. I have a 5s right now and so i am going to need to decide if I want to get the 6s or wait until next fall.

I'm looking forward to the show and hopefully you can help advise me one way or another

    Regards,

    Jordan H

Well Jordan - I think your email was a good segway into the next item to cover on this episode - and that is the new iPhones.

    25:46

    http://pocketnow.com/2015/09/09/gold-iphone-6

The iPhone part of the show started at the 83 Minute mark.

Tim starts off with talking about the iPhone growth was 3.5 times the rest of the industries growth world wide for the last quarter.  That is 35% growth for the iPhone vs 10% for the rest of the industry.  And when you look at China - it was even more incredible as the iPhone grew 75% vs a 4% decline for the rest of the industry - and yes - that 75% growth was definitely responsible for most if not all of that decline for everyone else.

Tim said the iPhone 6 is the most popular iPhone ever.

Tim then introduced the new iPhone 6S and 6S+ the names of which were a surprise to exactly one person - who lives in Albania. For everyone else - it was as expected for the name and for many of the new specs.

Like the fact there is a rose gold colored unit and that the aluminum used is the 7000 series that is used in the Aerospace industry.  Nope not a reaction at all to Bend-duh-gate.

As expected the addition of Force Touch oh wait 3D touch - which is Force Touch with a new name.  There will also be a big Taptic Engine supporting Force umm I mean 3D touch.  Apple made a big deal about this new feature - I will not. I think we have covered it with the Apple watch a couple of times at least.

The also announced there is new glass - a dual ion exchange glass - which Apple claims is the toughest glass available - this was a rumor that popped up some time ago.

As expected the new iPhones will have the A9 processor.  Which compared to the A8 processor in the iPhone 6 and 6+ the A9 in the 6S and 6S+ is 70% faster for CPU processing and for Graphic tasks it is 90% faster.  So it is a very nice increase in speed. It is also a more energy efficient processor.

Apple is claiming it is the most advanced chip in a smartphone ever.

The M9 Coprocessor is now built directly into the A9 Chip.

This means now you no longer need to have your iPhone plugged in to ask her - H E Y Siri - it will work all the time plugged in or not.  For future iPhone 6S and 6S+ users - this is my blanket apology for all times I say H E Y siri and I forget to spell out the Hey part.

They also updated the Touch ID sensor.  It is supposed to be twice as fast.

Apple also announced the 12 MP rear camera. Which they talk about doing the higher MP camera but not by degrading the sensors.  They also talked about deep trench separation - which we are all supposed get as our take away from the presentation.  Essentially They tried to go into detail on why their 12 MB sensor is better than other people’s 12 MB sensors.  Because you know - the last couple of years it was all about mentioning that higher MP count does not mean better pictures.

The camera lens is NOT flush - which most likely means the module is NOT the LynX camera modules.  Which means - when I am spending money this fall - it will not be on a new iPhone.  Apple TV - absolutely - 100% Yes.

The new iPhones do finally allow for 4K video recording.

The front camera or the FaceTime camera was also updated as expect and is now a 5 MP HD camera.  And also as rumored - it now uses the screen as a flash for the FaceTime camera - including doing it as a truetone flash.

They did engineer it to light up 3 times brighter than normal when using it as a FaceTime flash.

They also said this works great with one handed operation especially when using those FaceTime photos for Snapchat.   ok maybe they did not use those exact words.

The Panaroma pic increased to a max of 63 MP from 43 MP before.

One new feature is the LivePhotos feature.  It where you take a photo - and it takes 1.5 secs before and after of video and sound.  You do nothing different - you just take the photo - and if you have the live photos option selected - which it is by default - it captures the before and after moments around that photo.

It is a neat feature but it does take up a little more storage.

They have Developer API’s for this - and Facebook for example will be support LivePhotos later this year.  No word on when SnapChat or Tinder will be supporting this.

They upgraded LTE again - and it is now twice as fast as before supporting up to 300 MBPS speeds - assuming you have the one or two carriers in the world that support that now. The now support 23 bands - the most LTE bands of any smartphone.

Wifi is faster as well - 2X faster then before supporting up to 866 MBPS speed.

So a quick little recap of some of those specs - 4K video recording,  64 MP panorama pics,  12 MP pics,  and livePhoto pics to boot - all this adds up to a lot more storage needed for your photos.

So naturally that means Apple finally has killed off the 16 GB low end option.   Ummmm - NO.  Apple once more has the entry level next Gen iPhone as 16 GB, then 64 GB and the top size of 128 GB for both the 6S and 6S+ - pricing is the same as the past gen 6 and 6+ of the same size storage.

The iPhone 6 and 6+ now moves to the mid tier phones - and are now $100 less for each.  And the iPhone 5S becomes the free option for those getting them with a carrier subsidy in the US.  The 5C is the version that was killed off.

Also killed off was the Gold iPhone 6 and 6+ and 5S.  That is correct - the 5S, 6 and 6+ are now only available in Silver and Space Gray.  The 6S and 6S+ are available in Silver, Space Gray - along with Gold and Rose Gold.

Apple also introduced their own iPhone Upgrade Program available from Apple Retail in the US.

It starts at $32 a month.  You choose your carrier and you get an unlocked iPhone including apple Care+ - and you can then upgrade your iPhone every year. This will mean you hand over your device to get the new one each year.

Again this is starting at $32 a month.  More info on this on a later episode as it could take some time to work out all the details and T’s and C’s

Ok - Lets talk Pre-Orders.  They start this Saturday September 12th - likely at 12:01 AM PT.  3:01 AM ET

If you are going to be pre-ordering - remember to have the Apple Store app installed on your iOS device.  As that it typically where you can pre-order first.  Also have the Website up on your computer just incase.

And you have to be ready prior to 12:01 AM PT going into Saturday Morning.  So Friday Evening - make sure you have the Apple store app installed and all your info in there.

Ok - you can order on the 12th - when will you get said device.  September 25th is the answer - not the oft rumored September 18th.

So the rumors and speculation around a Sep 11th pre-order sep 18th launch date were wrong.

Per the countries where the new iPhone will be available at launch.  The lucky winners are:

    Australia

    Canada

    China

    France

    Germany

    Hong Kong

    Japan

    New Zealand

    Puerto Rico

    Singapor

    United Kingdom

    and the United States

By the end of 2015 the iPhone 6S and 6S+ will be available in over 130 countries on over 400 carriers.

Some other minor spec changes for the S series are the following:

The 6S depth increased to 0.28 inches from 0.27 inches.

The depth of 6S+ increased to 0.29 inches from 0.28 inches.  The height increased to 6.23 inches from 6.22 inches,  The width increased to 3.07 inches from 3.06 inches.

Interestingly - the 6S had the same height and widths as the 6.

The weight did change on both.  The 6S increased to 5.04 ounces from 4.55 ounces.  The 6S+ increased to 6.77 inches from 6.07 ounces.

The S series is now Bluetooth 4.2 - not 4.1 as I had speculated - and not the 4.0 that the non S series was.

The 4K video recording is at 30 fps for both S series units.

And the iPhone 6S+ now also supports Optical image stabilization for Video recording.

There is now stabilization with Time-Lapse Video - because yeah we all know how annoying non-stabilized Time Lapse videos can be.

When you are recording 4K videos - you can take 8MP stills.

With Video - there is now Playback Zoom.

On the FaceTime Camera - the video recording is just 720P HD video - the rumor was it was going to be 1080p video.

Per battery life - there is no difference in the specs for the 6S vs the 6 nor is there any differences between the 6S+ vs the 6+ - All specs are identical to the previous gen.  That actually surprised me - I mean what are the chances the specs with the new processor - and other changes would see IDENTICAL specs.  HMMMM cooking of books - naahhhh - that would be wrong.

So what were some of your thoughts on the new iPhones.

From Francisco Tapia from Google+ quote

ForceTouch renamed to 3D Touch, looks very interesting

the parallax menus feature which looks awesome on screen, but what does it look like with it disabled?

wow, i think i like the force touch to swipe between apps w/o the home button

Karthik - I am also disappointed with the 16 GB min spec. I would not say evil - definitely greedy.  But not evil.  Evil is when you don’t offer upgrades to new version of the OS or sell of your users data.

    Hi Rob,

I know you are getting a ton of email today... But I did not notice a difference in phones this time??? Did they mention if the plus has anything over the 4.7 other than screen/battery?

I have the 6 plus and may go 6s if it's the same this time.

    Regards,

    Dan

Well Dan - My thoughts on the new iPhone 6S and 6S+ - again - I will not be upgrading - my 6+ is fine for me. If you are sitting on a 5S or earlier - then I would recommend upgrading - but for 6 and 6+ owners - I just can’t justify it for most.

Per the battery life - there is still a big advantage in battery life for the + series vs the non-plus series.  So if you go for the 6+ to the 6S - you will get a hit in battery life.  The 6S+ as mentioned is identical to the 6+ for battery life and both are better then the 6 and 6S - which again those two are identical.  Or simply put if you want the best battery life stick with the + version.

One additional spec that has kinda been confirmed by a 3rd party that got a hands on with the iPhone 6S and 6S+ is that the new devices do have 2GB of RAM - I think we many need to wait until i

I want to go back and now talk about the iPad Pro - Yes it was introduced and Yes as rumored it will not launch until November.

I am going to go quickly over the specs now .  As well we have a long time to go over it in detail before it launches.

But first I need to read this cartoon that was written by Joel Watson back in 2012 - 3 years ago.  I have a link to this in the show notes titled - A comic predicted Apple inventing MS Surface three years ago.

In the first frame it shows Balmer holding the Surface and saying quote we call it the surface unquote. The audience yells boo and says your iPad sucks.  And balmer says its not an iPad its a surface - and then someone yells suck my surface the surface of my - redacted.

The Next frame it shows Balmer saying it has a kickstand and cupholder.  The audience says your iPad still sucks.  Balmer drops an fbomb and says we a darn keyboard right in the cover in three years when apple copies this you redacted will think it is genius.  Some then says do the monkey dance

The last frame says - WWDC 2015 - And it shows Tim Cook holding up what looks like the iPad pro saying We call it the smart cover touch and we thing you’re going to love it.

Someone yells out you invented that  - and Tim replies - Yes - Yes we did.

Pretty darn accurate of Mr. Watson - he missed the timing by a scant 3 months.

Ok - Now Lets go over what was announced today at the Apple Event.

The iPad Pro - predicted by many - at least many not named Rob that have a podcast about the iPhone - was the introduction of the iPad Pro.  It is as expected a 12.9 inch iPad.  Again - I question why this was announced now - but what ever - I am kinda over it - sorta - you know if you don’t ask me about it and don’t remind me about it - over it.

Any way lets get into the specs.

First there are 3 versions - Wifi only 32 GB version - A wifi only 128 GB version and a Wifi+Cellular 128 GB version.  Pricing for all three are $799, $949 and $1079 respectively.

The size of the unit is 12 inches by 8.68 inches by 0.27 inches.  And it weights 1.57 pounds.  That is close to what the original iPad weighed.

Per the size of the screen - to put it in perspective the Original iPad and iPad Air2 - are the same height for the screen as the iPad Pro is wide.

Resolution of the screen is 264 pixels per inch - the same as the iPad Air 2.

It has the A9X processor with the M9 coprocessor built in.

    It is sporting Bluetooth 4.2

Battery life is the same as all the other current iPads.  Which are all listed as follows.

Up to 10 hours of surfing the web on wifi, watching video or listening to music.

or Up to 9 hours of surfing the web using cellular data network.

Other wise all specs are the same as the iPad Air 2.  with the following exceptions for brand new features.

one there is now 4 built in stereo speakers.  2 at the bottom and two on the top.  YEAH!!!  and About time.

There is also a new smart connector.  This is for connecting to the new keyboard cover.  Or as Apples says quote

The Smart Connector is a new interface that takes advantage of the two-way conductive fabric in the Smart Keyboard. It allows iPad Pro to provide power to the Smart Keyboard and lets the Smart Keyboard relay each of your keystrokes back to iPad Pro. Using the Smart Connector couldn’t be easier. Simply align the Smart Keyboard to iPad Pro — just as you would with a Smart Cover — and start typing. Now there’s even less distance between what’s on your mind and what’s on the display. unquote

The new Smart Keyboard will run you $129.  It connects to the iPad magnetically and via inductive connections - there is no battery or on off switch.  It just works when connected.  Yes - Yes that does sound a lot or almost identical to the Surface and its keyboard connection.

The other thing that was introduced with the iPad Pro - was also rumored and that is a new Stylus called the Apple Pencil - it will run you $99.  One cool feature is that to recharge it you plug it into the Lightening port. They say a full charges lasts 12 hours - and 15 seconds of charge will last 30 minutes.

So to sum this up - lets say you get the top of the line iPad pro wifi - 128 gb version and get the key board and Apple Pencil - that will set you back $1,177

Lets go over some feed back from Listeners on this.

    From Myron Uecker quote

12.9 inch screen on iPad Pro. Width of IPad Pro is same as height of iPad Air!

Size and performance are great, give me external storage

And now a connected keyboard to go with it. Sounds like they are targeting Microsoft Surface.

Apple Pencil? Ok I guess I can get behind that name for the stylus.

I wonder if other 3rd party stylii can work as well as the Apple Pencil? They haven't worked well on iPad Air 2. They don't say if it is Bluetooth like the rest and haven't said if it will work on iPads other than pro.

    unquote

Hi Myron - the Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard are designed specifically and only at this time for the iPad Pro.  They will not work with any other iPad’s in the Apple line up today.  Maybe and likely in the future - the iPad Air next gen will support the Apple Pencil - but for now - just the Pro.

    From Faisal K quote

iPad pro don't look portable anymore !!

4 speaker audio system - Beautiful

    unquote

    From Stephen Shaner quote

looks like no battery sacrifice, and 4 stereo audio

    unquote

    From Melissa Dorner quote

Combo of Pencil & iPad Pro could be used like a Wacom input device.

    unquote

    From Nic Brown quote

    I can't believe they made a stylus 😧 that's just sad

    unquote

    And From Francisco Tapia quote

so they haven't said how they solve the problem of carrying the new stylus with the iPad pro

    unquote

Francisco - Great question and the only answer I could find was Kickstarter.  And by find I mean make up.

Also deserving a little bit of a mention - the iPad Mini 4th gen was introd as well - and it is basically the specs of the iPad Air Performance wise.  Now bumped up to the A8 processor - not the A8X - but otherwise the same specs.

The iPad Air2 was not upgraded - however it is now showing Bluetooth 4.2 where it used to be bluetooth 4.0 - possibly it is a typo - that or it was a very very minor tweak.

Ok - and that wraps up iPads for now.

    http://www.apple.com/watch/

There was a slight announcement with the Apple Watch - there are now Gold and Rose Gold anodized aluminum Apple Watches available.

And a few new straps - and well excuse me if I yawn here - I am sure it is more about the time of night and lack of sleep - then it is about the lack of excitement about those updates. Hint that was sarcasm - you know just incase you missed it.

    VOICEMAIL -

    From the Google+ community:

A  few thoughts about today's keynote:

    This from Brenden Finnerty quote

    1) In general, it seemed a bit rushed. So much to fill in 2 hours that some important stuff was missed. For example, Schiller's example of why they increased MP on the iPhone. I felt he wanted to dive deeper but couldn't. I assume the new camera tech/dual lens stuff is not on the new iPhone?

    2) The new Apple TV is nice like really nice. The universal search feature with app support is a home run. Wish the TV subscription service was ready. This new Apple TV with the new streaming service would have been a true game changer.

    3) I might buy the new 6s just on the new Live Photos feature alone. So cool How long till Sammie copies Force Touch? unquote

    From Timmy T - Quote

So for the first time in four years I was off work and had the opportunity to watch the keynote today. Of all the years to be able to watch the keynote this was by far the best. In my opinion this may very well be one of the biggest releases of hardware ever.

Also worth noting was I found it interesting that Microsoft participated in the key note given the fact that the iPad pro virtually placed the last nail in Microsofts coffin. unquote

    55:48

One thing we have not mentioned yet is iOS 9 - well it will be launched as expected live to everyone on September 16th.  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not update on the 16th or the 17th or even the 18th.

    Wait - wait - wait.

Especially if you listen to podcast and use the podcast app - do not upgrade to iOS 9.0

Wait at least 10 days before you upgrade if then.  Let apple work out any issues first.

By the way Apple did release the GM of iOS 9 to Devs.  Again - folks if you are at iOS 8.4.1 or earlier - please do not upgrade on the 16th.

Let see what happens first for the masses.

I am not even going to go over my recommended update procedure - as I really think everyone needs to wait on the upgrade for at least 10 days this time around - especially if you need your iPhone for work.

For Devs however - you have two choices - iOS 9 Gold Master is now available or you can skip jail and go directly to iOS 9.1 Beta 1 - which was also made available to devs on September 9th.

More about these on future eps.

    57:03

Apple also announced changes to iCloud storage plans.

Previously it was 20 GB for 99 cents a month,

    200 GB for $3.99 a month

    500 GB for $9.99 a month

and 1 TB for $19.99a month

    The new prices are:

50 GB for 99 cents a month - you get an extra 30 GB.

    200 GB for $2.99 a month - that drops a buck a month.

    and  1TB for $9.99 a month - that drops 10 bucks a month.

5GB is still the free amount - that did not change.

    57:39

    Hi Rob,

You did great on the bingo card. Congrats on getting bit right on the Apple TV. 12 pix camera and A9 chip were talked about. Also the multi touch feature in the new iPhone and iPads.   Two iPads were announce the pro and mini 4. New version  of Apple watch and several new bands. No realention of iOS 9

    Regards,

    Melissa

    Hi Rob,

I am so happy that you were so wrong about this 9-9 Apple event. I listened to your latest podcast (#362) this morning and the three tiers you placed all of the rumors. Thankfully for all of us you underestimated this event. In all honesty, I did as well. While I wish the Apple TV would be more developed and enable me to truly cut the cable cord, I was not only impressed with this significant refresh, but I was also impressed with the iPhone 6S / 6S Plus upgrades as well as the new iPad Pro.

Yes, you were right about most of the rumors, but the iPad Pro rumor impressed me the most. As I was watching the live event, I thought that an iPad Pro would only be truly advanced if it solved the physical keyboard/case issue as well as the incorporation of a good stylus to make the iPad a better content creation device and workhorse tool. I would have never considered buying a new, bigger screen iPad, but these new accessories make it much more compelling.

I am glad to be an Apple investor on a day like today where they have once again proven to be a mighty force in technology and the stock price fell by $2.16 to $110.15. The ANAL-lysts will try and poke holes in Apple, but this is by far one of the most impressive product launches I’ve seen in years. Time to buy more APPL stocks.

    Regards,

    Paul, from Bend, OR

I would normally go over the bingo card - but I will wait until the next episode - as I want to get this episode out tonight.  Some of you have a decision to make tomorrow about pre-ordering - and this has been delayed enough due to my travels.

In this segment of how wrong were they we have the following quote quote “ iPad Killer: Truly, Really, I mean It

I’m the first to admit that I fall victim to shiny objects at trade shows, and I regularly call every new tablet an iPad Killer. But now, really, I’ve found it. OK, it may sound like I’m the boy who cried wolf – but Motorola’s new XOOM tablet is poised to become THE best non iPad tablet on the market when it ships later this year. unquote

Jim Louderback, Huffington Post, 6 January 2011

I am friends with Jim - so I fell bad putting him in here - but then again he did say the Xoom was an iPad Killer - Ouch Jim - really???? I don’t think you were crying wolf - maybe crying Flying Spaghetti Monster - maybe - but not wolf - a wolf actually you know exists - Just Sayin

    http://tii.libsyn.com/september-9th-2015-rumor-bingo-card

Ok - I try to get a Rumor Bingo card done to review in the episode prior to a keynote event - and this episode is said episode and this part of the episode is where we go over said bingo card.

I put a post up at today in iOS dot com and it is also in the Tii App.

As I say in the post - this is not that I think All the rumors will happen - It is just the ones that seem to be getting talked about the most that are not completely crazy.

That said - let me put them in three buckets.  Those Most likely to happen.  Those that could happen.  And those least likely to happen.

First the ones most likely to happen:

    Force Touch

    A9 Processor w/ M9 Motion Processor

    Bluetooth 4.1

    6S and 6S+ announced

    Apple TV 4th Gen

4K Video Recording on the iPhone

12 MP Rear Camera for the iPhone

2 GB RAM for the iPhone

Min storage for iPhones stays at 16 GB

Then there are those that could happen:

Apple TV touch pad remote w/ motion sensor

    Apple TV App Store

Apple TV remote w/ Siri control

3 to 5 MP 1080p HD Facetime Camera

    iPhone 5S killed off

iPhones built w/ 7000 series aluminum

    Full NFC access

New Apple TV $199 to $249 price

Apple TV with 32 GB storage

And finally there are those not likely to happen.

Rose Gold Special Edition of iPhone 6S+

Apple Tv to be Home-kit Hub

    LynX camera Module

Camera Flush w/ back of iPhone  - those last two go hand in hand.

    5C replaced by 4" 6C

iPad Pro announced  - Yes - I know most people think this one belongs in the first group - I am not most people.  I still think with the Apple TV, iPhone 6S and 6S+ - plus apple watch OS2,  iOS 9, and Apple TV App store - that is just a whole lot to cover and no need to force the Apple iPad Pro in - when Apple could push it out to October - especially if it not going to launch until November anyway.

Any way These are the rumors that made it on the bingo card - which really I finished up right after the last episode.  I just sat on it for a few days to see if I thought it needed any changes and it did not - or at least I did not think it did.

The reality on this - is each event I go thinking yeah most of these can happen - this event will be different than past events - and each time we do not even get half of the items.

And then there are always iTems that are announced that no one predicted.

I would imagine this event will be the same as past events - in that more than half of those items will not happen and we will get a few nobody predicted.

We will of course go over this bingo card to see how it did on the next episode.

    07:57

    http://petapixel.com/2015/08/31/the-one-thing-

    apple-understands-is-photography/

    Hey Rob.

I just noticed that Petapixel is doing a Reader Poll asking "Is the camera the most important feature in your next smartphone?"

As of this moment, there are 1,826 respondents with these results:

         Yes  -  31.33%

         Maybe  -  15.12%

         No  -  53.55%

Now of course, this is a site that's aimed at photographers (pun intended) so I'm thinking that the results would be skewed a bit.  But it's interesting that even among photo enthusiasts, it's only 31.33% yes.

You'd think it'd be higher among the photography crowd.  Unless...they're placing more weight on their big boy cameras and don't value the camera in their phones as much.

Personally, I enjoy the camera in my iPhone 6 Plus.

    Regards,

    Mike

host of the Lens Shark Photography Podcast

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for the heads up - and I would agree with your assessment that for Photographers the iPhone camera would be less important then for non-photographers - because for non-photographers like myself - the best camera I own is my iPhone 6+ - nothing else at this point is even close per what I own.  To me - without a doubt - the Camera is the most important feature.  And I would guess if that poll was on a parenting website - the numbers of yes’s would be over 80%.

I would say it is actually surprising it is that high where almost 1/3 of those really into photography consider the camera on their smartphone the most important feature.

    09:49

    http://9to5mac.com/2015/09/02/ipad-pro-sep-9-ipad-mini-4-november/

One rumor that is heating up even more as we get closer to September 9th is the iPad Pro announcement rumor.

9 to 5 mac just had a big post on it this week saying it would be announced on the 9th and start pre-orders in late October and a launch to stores and users in November.

Sorry - why try to force the iPad Pro announcement with everything else - when the pre-orders are not until late October.

This rumor still does not make sense - Apple has done multiple events the past few years - the Apple press - and tech press - are all over these events - so Apple will get the coverage - and they can easily afford to rent out a venue for a morning and afternoon.  I could be wrong on this - but it just does not make sense.

A counter point to that comes from this email

    Hey rob

I think there will be an update to iPad on sept 9 because bestbuy canada just sent out emails for special trade in deals on iPads. Every time this deal comes there is usually iPad updates.

    Thanks

    Dev

And well I have a recording sent in already from one listener that thinks I am already wrong and he set it up with the how wrong were they music with a quote from me saying no iPads on Sept 9th.  He said I did not have to play it if I was right - oh - no - I told him - I will be playing it on the next episode either way.

Rumors and speculation around the price of the new Apple TV - put the price anywhere from a low of $149 to a high of $299.

I have seen quite a few blog posts saying even the $149 price is too high. But they are basing that on looking at Roku as the competition - and if the Apple TV has the specs it is rumored to have - i.e. all the ones I mention earlier - then that device even at $199 or $249 for a 32 GB version is a good deal.  Because really the comp is not Roku with all those specs it is Xbox and PlayStation and Wii.

With the Xbox 360 and PS3 being in the $199 to $249 price window.

But the games available for the Apple TV would be much more plentiful in a very short time and would be much cheaper.

And then there will be the question on will Apple come out with a true game controller or have an standard API to support 3rd party game controllers.

Apple has a lot of directions they can go with this - just based on rumors alone.  How much this remains a hobby and how serious Apple is about said Apple TV will determine a lot of what we see next week.

I am hoping that the $199 price will seem like a steal - and that there is a $249 price version with the greater storage capacity.

In my mind I have visions of 3rd party classic arcade controllers and Galaga, ms pac man, 1941, vanguard, Xevious and dig dug dancing in my head.

    Hi Rob,

I am sure that you may have already gotten these links.

about a Baltimore Man's Plan To Fix Parking Problem and Meets Opposition From Cities : NPR

    I really enjoy the show.

    regards,

    -Joe

Well Joe thanks for the links.  Last episode someone was asking about an app that helps you find open parking spots and I said the issue was there was no incentive for the person leaving the spot to say it is open.  Well this person in baltimore created an app - that address that issue - it allows the person with the spot to sell their spot when they are getting ready to leave.  How it sounds like it worked was you posted where your spot was and you were getting ready to leave and then someone would agree to buy your spot.

Shockingly some people had issues with people selling free parking spots.

When he tried to introduce his app in Boston - the City Council introduced a bill to ban his app.

Which again leads us back to the situation - there is no incentive to notify people that your spot is opening up.

    Hi Rob,

I visited NYC from UK in July and one place I had to go to was Harry's. I bought the razor and blade set and as I was a visitor I was given my 4 free blades that you usually get after registering. Love the blades still using original one to this day. My only regret is I didn't have a shave in the shop. Highly recommend anyone from UK purchasing them.

    Regards

    Gerry

Thanks Gerry for the feedback and thanks for supporting our sponsor  and I want to thank Harrys for sponsoring this episode - if you go to harrys dot com - that is h a r r y s dot com and use the promo code t i i - you will save $5 on your first order.

Lets face it guys one of the worst parts about shaving is tracking down that person to unlock to the display case so you can get your razors - the other worst part is the price you pay for said razors when you get to the check out counter.  Harry's helps on both those fronts - no need to go to the store - you just order on line and get the razors delivered right to your door with free shipping.  The starter kit The Truman Set is amazing - for $15 you get a razor - Foaming Shave Gel and 3 razor blades - all in a great package that screams GIFT ME GIFT ME - are you listening ladies.

And their Foaming Shave Gel is great.  If you look at what it is made from you see it is not industrial chemicals you can’t pronounce.  The ingredients include Licorice Root extract, a blend of Cucumber and Aloe - after using it my wife was asking what smelled sooo good.  It really is nice to shave with something that would never have been featured in a Toxic Avenger flick.

I am 100% a full fledged Harrys customer - have been for over a year - that is my blade - nothing else.  And they really are the best blades out there - and that is not an accident - Harry’s purchased a German factory to make the blades for their razors.  They offer a close comfortable shave with each blade lasting well over a month.

Once again go to Harrys.com now and save $5 off when you enter the code - t i i with your first purchase.  That is h a r r y s dot com and enter the coupon code T I I at check out to save $5 on your first purchase and start shaving better today or at least as soon as your new shave kit arrives at your door step.

Hi Rob, just an idea for the user who wanted a quicker way to set Bluetooth on and off between devices. Workflow for iOS is meant to have an amazing amount of work flow tasks that you can add together and then create shortcuts on your home screen i'm not sure if it would work for turning on and off Bluetooth settings, but I thought it might be worth some further investigation

    Hi Rob,

You had a listener ask about easier way to get to the Bluetooth menu to enable switching between Bluetooth devices.

I had the same issue for a long time, and discovered the launcher app from from cromulent labs. This is a widget app that allows you to create various types of widgets that you can access by swiping down and using the today menu. You can create widget launchers that will allow you to access area menu within settings. I've created widgets for not only Bluetooth, but also wifi and auto lock. There are many more options as well.

Thanks to everyone that has joined and thanks for the great posts.

One new post in the G+ community that went up since the last episode came from Craig Lucas who posted the following question

    Quote

I'm going out on a limb here. Apple TV could basically be an App, just like Netflix, Amazon Prime & Hulu etc etc. Maybe Apple TV is an app on the new Apple Games console?

    Unquote

Well Craig that is definitely a spin I have not seen in the rumor blogs.  As I said earlier each year something is new no one rumored about.  Maybe you will be the one that nails it.  Maybe it will be called Apple Arcade - instead of Apple TV.

Since the last episode there were also dozens and dozens of other new posts in the Tii Google+ community - which is an Android fan bois free zone and spammer free zone.  Yup it is the most civil Google+ community covering iOS.

Per the caller that wanted to know how to access their iCloud music, in the Music app, My Music, when you select between Artists, Albums, etc. at the bottom of the screen you can toggle "Show Music Available Offline". At least that is how it works in iOS 9, and I'm pretty sure iOS 8.4.1 has the same music player.

    Cisco-Partner-to-Deliver-Fast-Lane-for-iOS-Enterprise-Users.html

    Hi Rob,

I'd appreciate your insight into this announcement.

    Thanks,

    Dr. John M

And this is per the deal Apple and Cisco just announced - Ken Ray likes to says numbers without numbers - and here we have words without meanings.

Let me read some of the Press Release from Apple.

quote August 31, 2015 — Apple® and Cisco today announced a partnership to create a fast lane for iOS business users by optimizing Cisco networks for iOS devices and apps, integrating iPhone® with Cisco enterprise environments and providing unique collaboration on iPhone and iPad®. unquote

Then there were two paragraphs of rah rah - iPad - rah rah cisco - but no info.

    Then these sentences

quote To address the ever-increasing demands on corporate infrastructure, Cisco networks and iOS devices will be optimized so that they work together more efficiently and reliably with the goal of providing users with even greater performance.

Apple and Cisco are also working together to make iPhone an even better business collaboration tool in Cisco voice and video environments, with the goal of providing employees with a seamless experience between iPhone and their desk phone.

With Apple's support, Cisco will deliver experiences specially optimized for iOS across mobile, cloud, and premises-based collaboration tools such as Cisco Spark, Cisco Telepresence and Cisco WebEx in order to deliver seamless team collaboration and reinvent the meeting experience.

    unquote

Ummm - Yeah - so Dr. John - I am not sure I can give you any insight - other than to say - it sure seems like a lot of Optimizing is going to be going on.  Don’t get me wrong - I think it is great that apple and Cisco are working together - it just would be nice to see some specifics - like we had when Apple and IBM did a deal - rather than a PR filled with Marketing speak.

    6s-android-bubble-bursts-as-europeans-grab-iphones.html

There was an article in Computer world titled - iPhone 6S - Android bubble bursts as Europeans Grab iPhones.

The article starts off with some date from the recently released Article from Kantar Worldpanel - where for the 3 months ending in July - 27 percent of Smartphone buyers across Europe left Android for iOS.

It seems the more mature the smartphone market - the more likely buyers were to switch to iOS. Or put another way - the more time people spend being frustrated with Android - the more likely they are to step up and get an iPhone.

    http://appleinsider.com/articles/15/09/03/latest-comscore-figures-

    show-iphone-growing-and-cementing-us-marketshare

And speaking of data - Comscore just released some of their own.

They found that an average of 44.2% of the US market during the three month period ending in july belonged to the iPhone.  That is an increase of 1.1 % points from the prior three months.

In comparison Samsung’s US market share dropped 1.3 points to 27.3%.

Android over all saw its market share fall to 51.4% down 0.8 points.

Those numbers for Apple are expected to rise this fall and Sammy’s given their luke warm reception of their new handsets should see an even bigger drop.

    29:57

    http://9to5mac.com/2015/09/04/apple-music-44m-us-users/

Comscore also reported that 37 Million in the US used Apple music in its first month.

Now some clarification - that is 37 Million in the US that used the Apple Music APP - not that had signed up and used the Apple Music service.

That made it the 14th most popular smartphone App - just behind Twitter.

When this news broke from Comscore - it was commonly mis-reported that 37 Million or 44 Mil as the report initially listed it - were signed up to the Apple Music service.

To be quite honest - I can’t imagine that the number of users of the Apple Music app is ONLY 37 Million  users.

As that works out to 24.1% reach - where as Apple Maps had a 28.2% reach.

By comparison Apple had a 44.2% reach - so that means they are saying only 54.5% of iPhone users used the Music App - again that seems low to me.

    http://9to5mac.com/2015/09/01/amazon-prime-video-now-offers-

    downloads-for-offline-viewing-on-iphone-and-ipad-users/

    Hi Rob,

For the Amazon Prime users.... This is huge! news.

    Regards,

    Peter H

And the huge news is that Amazon Prime Video now offers downloads for offline viewing on iPhone and iPad.  Which is very nice for those you can download.  For example Vikings TV show - that one you can download - there is a download button there.  So you tap it and by default you need to be on wifi for it to start downloading.  Works well.

However not all movies and TV series you can do the download option for.  For example - Falling Skies - which along with Vikings are the two series I have in my watch list right now - that series does not allow downloading.

But some downloads are better then none - and I downloaded eps 1, 2 and 3 of Season 2 of Vikings for my up coming trip.  Thus giving me something to watch on the flights in case I get stuck in a seat where work is not possible.

So Peter thanks for the heads up on those.

Folks obviously you need an Amazon Prime account for this and you need the Amazon Video app.  Which hopefully come September 9th - will also be an App available on Apple TV.  If so - there are a couple of TV series on Prime the Wife and I will be catching up on.

    https://theoverspill.wordpress.com/2015/09/01/premium-

    android-hits-the-wall-the-q2-2015-smartphone-scorecard/

I like the title of this next article - Premium Android hits the wall - the Q2 2015 smartphone scorecard.

In the 2nd quarter of 2014 - a year earlier - Sammy, HTC, LG, Sonym Motorola and Lenovo together shipped a total of 129.4 M smartphones  - that was 43% of the whole smartphone market for that quarter.

In the 2nd quarter of 2015 - the combination of that same group shipped a total of 114.7 Mil devices and it was just 34% of the total market for the quarter.

These are two telling stats - none of the Android OEM’s shipped more handsets than in the year ago period - and worse than that - none made more operating profit than in the year ago period.  And quite a few lost money - including both Sony and HTC.

The only one to increase handset sales and profits would of course be Apple.

Android’s Premium smartphone market is being destroyed from below by Xiaomi, Huawei, OnePlus and Oppo.  And being picked off from above by Apple.

If you are in the Premium Android space you are now in between the preverbal Rock and a hard place.

Hi Scott - I just tested this again in iOS 9 beta 5 - and it is working as good as always.  It is now under Text Replacement in iOS 9 to get to it go to Settings —> General —> keyboard —> Text Replacement

And there you will see the list of ones you have setup.

For example I have kk setup to be my wifes email address.  So when I want to email her - I just type kk - it then suggests - her email address and I tap return and it puts her email address in the the email.

I still have LLAP set up to be the emoticon for Live Long and Prosper hand symbol.

But yes per your question - it is still working for putting in an email address.

    Hey Rob,

I was just listening to your recent podcast, item 361, and I just wanted to say two things: first, if you're going to say something bad about a person (in response to Angela's video to Apple Retail Store employee's), please please PLEASE at least pronounce her name correctly. It's Angela Ahrendts, pronounced Ar-ents. Not Arnetts.

My second thing was about the listener who called about buying an Apple Watch charger and it being stainless steel instead of white like his. Apple made two types of watch chargers, the first kind came with the Apple Watch Sport, and is all white. The second kind comes with the regular Apple Watch, and is stainless steel, to match the watch itself. What they sell in the retail stores in the stainless steel charger. So if you went and got a Sport instead of the standard, you got a different charger as well.

    Regards,

    Brandon

Hi Brandon - thanks for the info on the Apple Watch charger.  Per Angela’s last name - She is just one of many on this show who’s last name I mangled like a 2 dollar meat grinder.  And given that she was allegedly advocating pitching the Apple watch as a device students can use to cheat - yeah - not feeling even a twinge of guilt for mangling her name.

Well exciting news - Android Wear is now Officially compatible with iOS - Play crickets chirping.

That is right - you can now officially use Android Wear devices with the iPhone 5 or later running 8.2 or later.

Well and you will also need the latest gen of Android wear.  the LG Watch Urbane or one of a number of other new devices coming out.

You also need to download the official Android wear app in the iTunes app store - so no - no jailbreaking is required.

Ok - Time to take a shower - I am feeling a little dirty just talking about that.

Thanks to Michael for the heads up on this next one.

Which is well out the dirt and into the mud patch - as this one is about the New Nest thermostat.

Seems the new Nest Thermostat was redesigned to have a slightly thinner profile, a larger and easier to read screen and some updates on the software side.

The display is 40% larger than the past versions.  The new version runs $249.  It has a feature to sense movement from far away and if there is none - it shuts off the display.

Users can now set the default screen to display the Temp, an analog clock or a digital clock.

It is available now at nest dot com and amazon and best buy and eventually 7,000 retail locations.

This is the first update of the Nest since 2012 - now making the Apple TV the oldest electronic device since its last update.

    Hi Rob,

Thank you for bringing up my question about the new notes app on your last podcast. At first I was really excited to follow your instructions. However, after following your advise I was right back where I started. I created a new note in the "On My iPad" section and here is all I see:

As you can see, the only option I have when the keyboard is hidden is the camera option. The "swiggly" line is not present. Thank you for any follow up you can provide.

    Regards,

    Brenton N

    Hi Rob,

Persistence is key! Please see below in regards to the Sketch feature of the new notes app:

You will notice that it states the Sketch feature is only available on:

    iPhone: 5 and higher

    iPad: 4th gen and higher

iPad Mini: 2nd gen and higher

    iPod: 6th gen and higher

Just a little something for your listeners. Looks like a new iPad is in my future.

    Regards,

    Brenton

    Hey Rob,

Just wanted to say in response to notes and the reason it's so hard to find sketch feature as I have no issues. The reason you can only find this feature when on the "on my iPhone section" is due to not upgrading your existing notes to the new notes format because it will stop your notes from syncing to your Mac and any other devices not running iOS 9 or 10.11.

    Regards,

    Will

    From Larry D

quote Yet another example of Apple hating link bait.

Everywhere else that I saw an article referencing the story they specifically called out the fact that in order for this hack to happen you have to be jailbroken.

This article only mention it in one sentence in the middle of the article hopefully to be overlooked. Just complete utter disingenuous live bait. unquote

Oh - Larry - don’t limit your venom on just the CNN article with the title -

More than 225,000 Apple iPhone accounts hacked - CNN Money

Oh there are many others you can spit that venom at such as:

iPhone hackers steal more than 225,000 Apple accounts

    WPXI Pittsburgh

new iOS Malware compromises 225,000 apple account - slate magazine

over 225,000 apple iPhone accounts hacked by New Malware - news factor network

225,000 iPhone breached by hackers - bloomberg

Over 225,000 Apple Accounts hacked via iPhones - UPI.com

This Malware just hacked 225,000 apple account - Esquire.com

Yup - none of those link bait - j-school 101 flunkies mentioned jailbreak anywhere in the article.

And even the ones that did - often did not get into the real details and that is this whole issue is  only if you downloaded an app which was not part of the standard big boss repository.

So not only would you need to have jailbroken you would have needed to add a 3rd party repository - Weiphone’s Repository - which almost no one does outside of china - as it is based on a popular Apple blog in China.

This is a lot different than the malware lurking in the official google play store.

That said - the press sure does love their link bait titles.  Just another example of fear mongering by the Press looking to use link bait for their own gains.  Just Sayin

The reason this article is near the end of the episode - is that really it is not big news - and for most if not almost all listeners of this show it is not an issue.  A lot of people ran around screaming about this like the house was on fire - where really it was just a scented candle burning in the corner.

    Hi Rob,

It is getting really bad for the Android users.

    Look at this article

    Regards,

    Arnold

    Raleigh, NC

And Arnold sent along an article titled - Report - Malware targeting android smartphones on the rise.

Here is a great quote from that article - quote Malicious software targeting smartphones with the Android operating system is becoming more common, with some handsets already infected when they're bought. unquote

You heard that right - when they were purchased - they already had malware.  No need to root the phone and then add a strange 3rd party repository and then download a specific app - nope all you needed to do was buy the phone.

So yes maybe I minimized the 225,000 Jailbroken users who added in the 3rd party repository and then downloaded an app with malware a little bit.  But wow - compared to buying a phone already infected - there is no comparison - none.

Here's something I'd like to share about the recent comments by Runners to have more effective interaction with Apple Watch and Heart Rate. My comment also applies to Walkers, Hikers, Bikers and other activities.

First, on the Heart Rate items covered in the past 2 episodes, we must realize that Apple doesn't deliver that function as an App. It is a health sensor utility that can be viewed in Glances. It is part of HealthKit and used to help track activity to calculate caloric burn rates. While it is available to users in Glances, it doesn't have a persistent presence like an App. Thus, the Heart Rate reading won't continue to display despite a user setting Activate Last Used App on Wrist Raise. Once the utility has measured your Heart Rate, it returns that display to its hidden state.

Next, it is true that you can see your Heart Rate while using the Workout App as you explained to one listener. But the concept of swiping left many times to see it is difficult since wet fingers are ignored - also it's awkward and slightly dangerous. A runner's attention to the road, sidewalk or path is paramount for safety. So making repeated glances or longer looks at the watch could lead to a fall. All runners agree on that point - and probably agree the Workout App devs missed the boat on a clean display of key data.

I've found that the best Runners App on the iPhone is Runkeeper. It worked fine with my Pebble for over 1,000 miles of running since I got mine.    Of course no Heart Rate info since that isn't in the Pebble roadmap. (As an aside, it is a great exercise watch though - with water resistance and many days of battery life.)

Now that I have the Apple Watch, I've used Runkeeper with it for over 200 miles. But the Apple Watch display for Runkeeper still lacks a unified snapshot that includes Heart Rate. You'll get elapsed time, distance and pace. There is room for a Heart Rate display in upper left corner of the Apple Watch - directly across from the current time displayed in the upper right corner. But the WatchKit for "watchOS1" didn't give App devs access to the Heart Rate health sensors.

Maybe the watchOS2 rollout on Sept. 9th will have some good news - but I don't think the Workout App devs are on top of what serious runners need.

So my feedback for all Apple Watch runners is to ask independent App devs to embrace WatchKit for watchOS2. It provides access to the health sensors in real-time. And with CoreMotion enhancements we can look forward to better running app display options.
